cbd and beauty

next big thing or a big flop? CBD: is it the beauty bomb of 2020 like hyaluronic acid or will it fizzle like bird poop moisturizer masks and face slapping? With marijuana legalization only happening within the last decade, University of Technology in Australia is thrilled to see what CBD, THC, terpenes and everything else in cannabis can do. They didn’t even have to advertise for funding partners: as soon as they announced their desire to research into canna’s health and beauty uses, the corporate partners came running. Bod Australia was all in with the desire to see what it could do. They are still testing but are optimistic that CBD will be a key beauty ingredient for the future. The partnership of UT Australia and Bod will be named Emerald Plants Health Source (EPHS) and will be the largest cannabis grower in the world serving the Asia Pacific market. cannabinoids will become the new ‘it’ drugs, but when they are added to other ingredients (or even when they are left to work together on their own) some remarkable things happen. Tests using essential oils and CBD offer promising results already in trials. Adding various essential oils to CBD have resulted in something way bigger than anything previously anticipated called the Entourage Effect. The Entourage Effect has shown remarkable potential for depression, pain, arthritis, ADD, PTSD and many more ailments, both internal and external. The beauty industry stands to find mixes that will revolutionize the industry. There are a few hundred cannabinoids in each cannabis plant, and so far, each one acts differently, but each has a special skill. The exponential effect achieved by adding hyaluronic acid, oils, or nut butters could revolutionize the beauty industry once the magic formulas are dissected. continued on page 5

cravin’ you some canna cup? you will be in 3... 2... Okay, I’m going to own it. I didn’t look up Canna Cup for a long time. And I really did think it was going to be a bunch of Cheech & Chong types loving their pot crops. And now I feel stupid. Because I’m blown away at how HUGE this thing is! Holy WOW Y’all! It all happens at the Lost Lakes Amphitheater in OKC Aug 24-25 and I’m wondering what I can do to find a way to attend, even if only for one day. Let’s start with the entertainment. Just walking around could bump you into all kinds of music, film or TV stars, but because this phenomenal event is hosted

by High Times Magazine, who, if you didn’t know this already, was out there, telling the people that cannabis was not the ‘Demon Weed’ the government made it out to be. These are the guys and gals who paved the way. But they brought out the music mayhem with Slightly Stoopid and 311 playing the stage while you check out artists, vendors, purveyors, tech and food. But what it’s really all about is the Cannabis. The best cannabis that is. And to win a gold cup from High Times is an award ceremony indeed. Plenty of categories for growers, processors make for a weekend of entertainment and plenty of samples to take home (don’t spend all your money in the first five minutes). Bring your OKLAHOMA medical marijuana card (no out-of-state MMJ cards accepted, it’s the law), your state ID stating you are over 18, your cash stash and a shopping bag. They partnered with two local hotels, Wake Zone Cable Park is close, and with all that’s happening at the Cup, finding other things to do will seem like too much effort. You can attend for as little as $40/day, but they have VIP passes should you need the royal touch. We just KNOW this is worth your time (and OURS – we’ll have a booth, check us out and say, “HIGH”), so stay not stoned until you get here, Oklahoma. Get more info, tix and see past winners at cannabiscup.com. They may even have a judge spot open, but you’ll want to get moving, like yesterday.

how marijuana got such a bad reputation by Amiea Prohibition: The action of forbidding something, especially by law. Also, something we all know, doesn’t usually work. Alright guys and gals get your Flux Capacitors ready and let’s take a brief trip back to 1937 were Marijuana Prohibition all began. It all started when Harry J. Anslinger, formerly the head of the Prohibition Department until 1933, drafted the Marihuana Tax Act (H.R. 6385). A United States Federal Act that placed

Anslinger

a ridiculously high tax on the sale of cannabis. Anslinger used many scare tactics to ensure this act would pass, saying things like, “Marijuana is a menace, you will lose your sanity, thus becoming a criminal.” He also tried to claim that killer, Victor Licata, violently killed his family while high on cannabis (this was proven wrong as no cannabis was found in his system.) Then, it was introduced to Congress by Robert L. Doughton (also known as Farmer Bob). The

Doughton

Bill was then passed and went into effect on October 1, 1937. Through the years, this act has been drafted and re-drafted, but, as we know today, the claims behind this bill have not held up (nice try Harry Anslinger!) Let’s fast forward to the 1970s. A time of the Apollo 13 accident and the voting age was lowered to 18. Big things happened in the ‘70s. Alright, back to the topic at hand. In 1970, a man named Robert Randall (who is also known as The Father of the Medical Marijuana Movement), was arrested for cultivating cannabis. When he went to trial, he told them about the discovery he made using marijuana for medicinal reasons. It helped with the symptoms of his glaucoma. He went through a lot of testing to prove that no medication could help him. Luckily, his case was dismissed. But that’s not the crazy part. A petition was filed with the FDA and he became the first person to receive cannabis from the federal government in 1976. His supply was later cut off in 1978 but he wasn’t giving up

that easily. In 1981, Randall and his wife Alice founded the ACT: Alliance for Cannabis Therapeutics, an organization that sought to legalize Medicinal Marijuana. On May 14, 1981, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled controlling narcotics make no exceptions for therapeutic use of the “drug”. Today, Marijuana has been proven again and again to be a great natural alternative to opiates. For many, it has been a life saver. I have seen firsthand how it has helped so many people both mentally and physically. No one has died from using marijuana. It has helped with seizures, depression and PTSD. Marijuana has lowered the opioid death rate by 21% and has helped opioid addicts to break their addiction. I think that alone shows how much good marijuana has been for many. I think with persistence, marijuana could someday be legalized for all on a federal level like it was for Robert Randall. Start with removing it from the Schedule 1 narcotic list.

ponics plus+ provides five things you need to know to grow and sow

I have to start by apologizing to the staff at Ponics+. I waited until the last minute and put my lack of planning on Ben, Don and Clint to get back to me within 48 hours. But these guys returned my call the next day and then proceeded to get down to the deeper levels of growing technology in a way that I followed along easily (and learned some new technology). This is a grow supply for the beginner, grow farm, botanist and everything in between. What really sets them apart is their passion for growing. They are not playing at this for money. Ponics+ team wants to not only impart knowledge but also infuse passion for the process into every person who walks through their doors. They asked that we tell you this: growing Medical Cannabis is an investment. Be

ready to commit to it to see it to the end, but plants are flowering, a full-spectrum LED or the rewards are really worth it. High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) is best. You will also need to know things like housing, Ponics+ Five things: reflectors, distance from your plants, heat output and number of plants per light (to 1: Quality Genetics. Seems simple, right? start). It all seems scary at first, but Ponics’ It’s why science clones the best plants, and guys can advise you here. They explained why cross breeds of various strains have lighting to me in a way that I wasn’t such potential to do so much more than confused or intimidated. I’m sure they can each one would have done on its own. help any newbie who wants to grow. 2: Lighting. Over the course of your plants’ lives, they will have different lighting needs. It’s very important to invest in good lighting for each stage. Until your plant is about 12 inches tall, Ponics+ recommends a T5 light, during your plants’ grow phase, they recommend you use a metal halide and while your

3: Temperature and Humidity. If you Google ‘VPD in cannabis’ you may lose a few days of your life in a black hole of data. This little nugget is often overlooked but can change your plants’ happiness greatly. “You may never get to that magical place of 75 deg F, 70 percent humidity, but you should always strive for it. And it’s hard to do.” Clint told us. As a grower, you will know

cultivating cannabis the words “Vapor Pressure Deficit” like a mantra in meditation. It’s super critical to plant happiness and nutrient uptake. Do not dismiss this. 4: Nutrients. “You can’t dabble in nutrients. You must follow our schedule.” The guys at Ponics told us that they have taken out the guesswork (our words) out for newbies like me, but some folks get panicky and under-nourish their plants. FOLLOW THE RECIPE.

5: pH. No matter how you want to grow, you must start ‘pH-ing’ your water to use both hydroponics and grow medium. This is non-negotiable. You’ll need a pH test kit: calibrate it, test your water, raise or lower your pH; your soil pH should be between 6.5-6.8 and your water pH should be between 5.5-5.8. Ponics+ has testing kits, supplies to adjust your water and medium and advice on the right grow medium (because everyday potting soil is bad for MMJ growth).

harvesting

in the medical age

by Amy Addams

You’ve spent the past many weeks growing your plants; worrying about them, seeing them flower into adulthood and waiting for the teeny little hairs to go red and brown. The moment has finally arrived. Or has it? You could ruin everything by getting scissor happy a few days early (or a few days late). Many websites were low on pictures and harvesting is one process where pictures seem critical. One site, growweedeasy.com, actually provides multiple pictures of notready-for-harvest and ready-toharvest plants. This grower also put a lot of thought into dealing with all those issues that can go wrong along the way; power outages/equipment breakages, keeping cats and dogs away

from your plants (they will eat them), and what color you want your trichomes to be for a specific effect. You can harvest the same plant at different times in the trichome maturation process to get different results. Here are some general rules about harvesting marijuana based on trichomes and the color of the hairs/pistils. If you follow these rules, you’ll know how to harvest weed perfectly every time (growweedeasy. com). 1. If white “hairs” are almost all sticking straight out and trichomes are all still translucent (clear) then your plant is too young and not ready for harvest. Harvesting now will result

in low yield and nonpotent harvests. 2. The beginning of the harvest window opens when your plant has mostly stopped growing new white “hairs” or pistils and at least 40% of the white hairs have darkened and curled in. 3. Highest level of THC is when many/most of the trichomes have turned milky white/cloudy (when viewed under a magnifier). Trichomes that are milky have the highest levels of THC are “ready to harvest” and contribute to more euphoric and psychoactive effects. At this point 50-70% of the pistils have darkened.

4. Some Sativa & Haze strains have trichomes that never really turn amber. If they’ve turned mostly white and don’t seem to be progressing further, it may be time to harvest! 5. The most “couchlock” or sedating effect happens towards the end of the harvest window, when the trichomes have become a darker color (usually amber/gold). The best results from amber trichomes come from Indica strains. The amber/yellow trichomes contribute to a ‘body high’. Some of the THC has converted into less psychoactive CBN, which has calming and anti-

cultivating cannabis anxiety effects. With some strains, the trichomes will even turn red or purple! I like to harvest around when 20% have turned amber. At this point 7090% of the pistils have darkened. Harvesting later will increase the sedating effects but may also start reducing the psychoactive effects. 6. When trichomes start looking grey or withered, the harvest window has passed, and buds will make you sleepy without many psychoactive effects. Usually it takes several weeks (4 or more) from the beginning of the harvest window for this to happen. It’s much

The BLUNT Truth

easier to harvest too early than too late! Want more of an ‘in-yourhead’ effect? Harvest your buds earlier, when only 40% of hairs have darkened and curled in and more than half of the trichomes are part clear/ part milky or mostly cloudy/milky. For the “strongest” marijuana buds with the most psychoactive effects, and the highest levels of THC, harvest when almost all trichomes are cloudy/milky. For more relaxing, antianxiety buds, wait until at least some of the milky / cloudy trichomes have darkened to amber. More amber = more relaxing, though the effects may

be somewhat less psychoactive. Remember, curing your buds properly for at least 2 weeks to a month will also give them more of an anti-anxiety effect. When growing your own marijuana plants, you can certainly sample buds off your plant at different stages to get an idea for what your preferences are. It’s okay to cut off pieces at a time! (Source: growweedeasy.com) A book recommended again and again is “Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower’s Bible,” by Jorge Cervantes and if you have low funds, there are many free downloads online.

It also helps combat the paranoia and anxiety that can sometimes occur from using THC. What marijuana strain

Green Vein is gonna be more like your hybrids, they can go either way. These strains are good for mild energy boost, mood enhancement and mild pain relief. Here’s a tip to get the best results from this combination. Remember K.F.C (Kratom, Food, Cannabis). Doing it this way will help you avoid getting llight headed or overwhelmed. It’ll also help if Kratom upsets your stomach. Although I have not tried this combination myself, I have talked to a few people that have, they’ve said that they have gotten great results from this combination. This may be a great option for you if you aren’t getting good results from just Kratom or Marijuana alone.

Carbon Dioxide ENRICHMENT • The air today has a natural CO2 concentration level of 350~400ppm. Plants have ability to consume up to 1500 ppm of CO2. • Supplementing CO2 can increase yield and growth by 20% or more. • When using high powered lights, CO2 supplementation increases plants ability to photosynthesize. • Adding CO2 can make plants more resistant to heat and light stress. • CO2 burners emit other gases during combustion that can be detrimental to plant health. A steady supply of CO2 gas is the most effective method for carbon dioxide supplementation.

UNCLE FUDGE’S FAVORITES

My brother asked me, “Do you like big buds?” Of course, I like big buds. Whatta stupid question. That’s like asking me if I like big boobs. This is Oklahoma -- not Texas, where they claim everything is big. (Now I am told I cain’t say “boobs” in this paper because it ain’t “nice” and “politically correct.” I asked em “What the

hell is this Russia? Stop Putin around! [pun intended]. If you want my story your gonna have to take it the way I write it, or you can write the damn thang yourself!”) Just for the record I like big buds…AND big boobs. But in this paper I can only talk about big buds, so let’s do that. I didn’t know my brother

was talking about a medical marijuana dispensary named: I Like Big Buds located in Skiatook and Owasso. Whatta name! These are folks after my own heart. And they do sell really big buds in their dispensary. They had one that weighed in at 5.2 grams (if that was the weight of a boob it wouldn’t be very big). Yet I don’t feel that just because you sell big buds in your dispensary I should write a story about it. What I do think warrants recognition is the vast number of different strains of medicine offered by I Love Big Buds dispensary. If there is a

conversing cannabis legitimate strain for every illness these folks have a cure for what ails ya. I didn’t count ‘em, but I venture to say there must be at least a hundred different strains displayed in their dispensaries. If you prefer edibles, or concentrates, you will find a good selection those as well. While not the largest dispensary I have been to, they do have the largest selection of God’s natural medicines I have seen anywhere in Oklahoma. If you are not finding what you need in your favorite dispensaries I urge you to try I Like Big Boobs. Sorry I meant to say “I Like Big Buds.” Tell ‘em Uncle Fudge sent ya.

the wild west of weed by Darrell Briggs Wherever I go, I hear folks saying ‘Oklahoma is the Wild West of weed.’ My question is, “Why do you feel this way? What has Oklahoma done differently from other states that make us the ‘Wild West of weed’?” I get a myriad of answers, but mostly they refer to Oklahoma being a ‘recreational medical’ state. When asked to be more specific, I’m told in other states, medical marijuana can only be utilized for specific ailments. In Oklahoma, there is no such distinction for cannabis use specified by our governing agencies, which brings me to the other reason for Oklahoma being called “the Wild West of weed.”

No limits have been legislatively placed upon issuance of medical cannabis business licenses in Oklahoma. As I write this, I don’t have specific numbers available to me for actual licenses issued throughout the state for growers, processors, and dispensaries; however, I do know there are at least five dispensaries where I live, in Skiatook. This seems to be a large number for a city with a population estimated at 7,953 (approximately 35 people out of every 1000 Oklahomans have a medical marijuana card). That is 280 people to support

It takes a little prep, a small amount of supplies, but we think the results will be worth it. You will need: • Empty Gelatin Capsules, size 00 (Amazon sells them for $8.75) or you can find them at just about any health food store or Whole Foods, you need at least 50 • Syringe (RSO or tincture syringes work perfectly) • 6 Tablespoons hardening Coconut oil (2 tablespoons to start) • 1 gram RSO OR tincture (you can use cannabutter if you know its THC, but butter has high melt point and could melt gelatin capsules), See ## below

800 mg THC (the package will list this as a percentage). Mix oils well. I cannot stress this enough. Mix gently using a whisk then scrape the sides using a silicone spatula. Using a tincture syringe (with a handy gauge), fill your capsule’s bigger side (about .5 ml). Gently put the smaller side over the bigger one and allow to finish cooling. Make 2 sample capsules, try one for potency. If it’s too strong, heat another tablespoon coconut oil and add it to your batch (I don’t recommend heating RSOinfused coconut oil in the microwave, nasty). You may also find that different strains of tincture or RSO provide very different results, be sure to make notes on each batch. You will probably adjust the dosing a bit on the first few batches, but a good fit is out there. This is more science, but some intuition can’t hurt. SUGGESTIONS:

The Process:

Dosing: You should start with one capsule and give it 15-60 minutes for effects to work (we heard that taking a Tums before you take your capsule(s) helps it to work faster, can’t confirm). Take note on how long the capsules take to kick in and how well they work. Keep your capsules in the fridge in a clearly labelled bottle away from light, children and pets. A 15-day supply is as many as you should make as the capsules tend to leak over time.

Melt the coconut oil in the microwave in a larger glass bowl (so you can stir later) using 50% setting for 30 seconds at a time (coconut oil melts at low heat - watch it closely). Add the tincture or RSO. We are assuming that one gram of tincture has

##: If you are using cannabutter, you should have recorded potency. You will need to figure grams/teaspoon (2.5 grams=1 teaspoon). Be sure to allow the butter/ coconut oil to cool a bit as it could melt the gelatin (37 deg C/140 def F).

**OPTIONAL ITEMS: • Mini ice cube tray to hold capsules. It wasn’t perfect, but it kept things somewhat sorted • SO worth it if this is in your future: “100-count size 00 capsule stand with filling tools by Daily Delux” (for $23 on Amazon)

The BLUNT Truth

THE SHAKEDOWN - september Share DIS UGH! It’s only been a YEAR and here we go already. Senate Bill 1030, designated to share MMJ BUSINESS data with state agencies was written in a way that it allows police to have access to MMJ PATIENT info. This means that if you get pulled over by the police, you may never know if you were singled out because you are a card-carrying MMJ user or that you really were annoying the cops by going 14 miles UNDER the posted limit. While set to go into effect Aug 29, many have said, ‘We’ll have it fixed by then’, others are waiting with a big bowl and spoon to get their hands on that data (cops, mostly) so they can make their jobs SO much easier. Good news is there are folks who are looking out for us. Ron Durbin, an attorney

in Tulsa is taking up the battle with OMMA and her parent agency OLETS to stop the agency from sharing. It is a blatant federal violation of HIPAA for your personal medical data to be shared without your knowledge AND consent. Find your local representative (https://www.okhouse.gov/ Members/) and tell them this is not okay. Congress said ‘leave the states alone’ is that enough? Before their August recess, Congress decided to let the states make their own fate with the cannabis thing, but is that really what we want? The problem comes when the stigma of cannabis is that it’s a schedule 1 narcotic (no medicinal value, highly toxic) and cocaine is considered less dangerous. At some point, like the gun debate, health care, and so many other

things, someone is going to have to make a first move. Let’s hope it’s in our lifetimes. Do U Drive Hi? Maybe you should stop. Because, A, it’s illegal and B, you could kill someone. Driving high is just as bad as driving drunk, sleepy or high on other drugs, and despite the joke that people who drive high drive too slow, it’s enough of a problem that even if you get pulled over, your MMJ card will not protect you from a DUI. There is no good excuse. When will these taxes end? Sheesh Michigan has a great idea that I hope will spread like a bad rash – they are using a fee-based system for growers and dispensaries with testing facilities paying

cannabis culture no fees or taxes at all. Depending on your income, your fee is based on a sliding scale to reflect that. What I would LOVE to see is this ridiculous tax on MEDICINAL cannabis go away for patients. Let the recreational thing in and have recreational users pay. Last I recall, I didn’t pay a 20 percent extra tax for Advil or my prescriptions, why am I charged this insane tax? We gave up cheap prescriptions willingly for expensive MMJ with a 20 percent markup to boot.

the cops want this too, people! Let’s find a way to stay out of harm’s way and watch the police do nothing on Saturday nights. Delivery is available in some states and given that the older folks are the fastest growing segment of MMJ users in OK, keeping slow, old codgers like me at home is the best thing that can happen for all.

canna bev industry despite the US gov not approving MMJ nationally just yet. Some experts think beverages might be the new ‘it’ thing with consumption being more easily controlled through beverages versus edibles.

The Bev Industry ready to rock the weed thing…and Walmart???

Even Walmart is looking at CBD products, which took many of us by surprise (in a great way). Walmart at one time not too long ago declared they wanted no part of the MMJ industry, so this is a great stride in a good direction. We applaud their opening of mind and change of heart.

Of course, we told you before about cannabeer, yet many brands are holding out for full government support and participation. A Cannabis Consumers/High Times Study found that of consumers who drink, 46 percent would choose cannabis over alcohol and 28 percent like alcohol and cannabis equally. That’s almost 2/3 of alcohol drinkers! Yikes!

It’s almost like Oklahoma is telling us, “We both know you’re full of crap.” I’m dreaming of a Dominos and Dispensary delivery service A lazy girl can dream, right? We’d keep the slow confused drivers off the roads, stock market prices for Dominos would go through the roof and Saturday nights would be filled with Live-PD episodes of cops driving around, looking for things to do. Hey,

Arizona Iced tea, Svedka Vodka and Mondavi Wine have all seen the writing on the wall and are playing their hand at the big boys’ table. Each wants in on the
