why we need to support the

Some folks were less than thrilled with our first state MMJ event held earlier this year; so much so, some folks are now turned off to gatherings of all sorts that represent Oklahoma medical cannabis. We have to tell you that we disagree. Huwha? Yeap. We said it. We disagree. Hollup. Before you tear this paper to shreds in a fit of rage, we have our reasons and they’ll make sense soon enough, but our biggest reason is an emotional one – WE DON’T NEED THEM OTHER FOLKS. They come here when they want something then they’re off. Whoop-dee-doo. Moving on…

Why do you NEED to attend the Cowboy Cup? There are MANY reasons, but we’ll offer up just the highlights:

BROTHER TO BROTHER YOU CAN DO THIS! Mornings are always a gift from God because we can start out each day new! Whether yesterday was great, ho-hum or tragic, each morning brings with it a new start. I don’t know if you just started riding motorcycles or if you have been riding for years - but in the early days of riding, we were very careful of cars, trucks and others around us. We watched our speed and riding on the highway was exciting and scary at the same time. Cautious is the word one might use because of our inexperience. But as time goes on and our confidence builds, we just hop on the bike and take off.

If you blew it yesterday or 10 minutes ago, just ask Him to forgive you and start again. He will forgive you as many times as you ask for it. And He will be faithful and keep you! Just refuse to throw in the towel, be determined to live this life, He will give you the strength to do it and you will discover that His Mercies are New every morning. how to handle medicine in the new world when you are a grouchy old fart by Amy Addams read reviews, see inside, see what the staff is like, see what they carry (you want a variety of flower, vape cartridges, edibles. This is a good time of year to be looking, lots of new stuff on the market with a new Oklahoma harvest.)

This is a call-out to old coots who were happy with our docs, prescription pads and a doctor in a lab coat who knew tech terms other than terpenes, cannibinoids, sativa and indica (and who was old enough to shave more than 12 whiskers). I cannot get excited about a kid in a white coat with a tie-dye t-shirt. I am old, in pain and cranky. I’ve been in pain longer than this kid has been alive. Listening to a budtender who has no clue what I am dealing with seems like a joke, yes?

No. I decided I was not going down without a fight. And I am not saying all this to encourage you to run into every pain doc’s office screaming for your old meds, but to change your approach to your medical treatment. The positives can outweigh the negatives, but you will need to be your own advocate. You must get involved in your healthcare to make this work. If you haven’t done so before, this will be an enlightening experience. We are assuming you have

already applied for your medical marijuana card (if you haven’t, you’ll want to investigate getting one at www.omma.ok.gov). How to find a dispensary you like when you feel like all the local dispensaries are not for you: 1. Get on the ol’ internet. Big time saver. Do a Google search on “<your town> dispensaries”. Let Google drive you around to the top searches for a while. Most shops have Facebook pages or websites. You want to

2. While looking for a dispensary, maybe one where you get one-on-one service with an older staff member (we’ve found dispensaries with pharmacists, nurses, medical pros. You need to look). 3. Research marijuana types available, what they do and CBD for what ails you. Since you are on the Google machine, take a look at the stupid names, write a few down on a piece of paper, fold it up and put it in your wallet. 4. Talk to friends and neighbors who are using MMJ (medical marijuana) and ask how they are doing. Most people will tell you more than

CBD does not require a card to purchase in a dispensary. It is safe and totally legal. You will not have any stoner effects. 5. When you have narrowed a few dispensaries to check out, grab a friend, sibling, someone to go with you. A ‘Devil’s Advocate’ is a good choice. Someone to be the grumpy Gus on your behalf when you are overwhelmed with all the new can help. Be sure you get your card back from the dispensary right away in case you want to leave.

9. Know your budget. Be ready to spend money on quality over quantity. Price equals quality. Trust me on this one. 10. Be open-minded. This is a marathon, not a sprint. I hated MMJ at first, but over time, I have come to at least make my peace with it. Just like new medications, there is an adjustment period. help for our

veterans by Micah Rodriguez

thank you for your service When thinking about our troops, many things come to mind. Brave, fearless men and women willing to put their lives on the line for millions of people back home. Strong, determined individuals who have overcome obstacles many civilians could never dream of. And when our troops come home from their orders, we celebrate their duty. We recognize and praise them for their service and sacrifice for all. What happens to our troops after the ceremonies, razzle dazzle, and spotlight? Seamless reintegration into society is expected for most vets, and for some that is exactly what happens. For others, that beautiful idea of an easy slip back into normal, everyday life after combat is just

a fantasy, not reality. Physical pain, anxiety and depression, post-traumatic stress, and shock are all common for a vet to either develop or return home with after their service. Any combination of these can create a sense of disconnect and isolation from everyone else. It can be hard looking for help with these issues, especially any mental illness. When looking for aid with these issues, medications like opiates, SRI’s, and a slew of other prescriptions can be found on the Veteran Affairs website. Not on that daunting list of pharmaceuticals is a drug that has been around for thousands of years. A drug that has been helping many citizens with multiple illnesses and disabilities nationwide. This

primordial, controversial, stinky ass drug is Marijuana. We’ve all heard Mary Jane, ganja, pot, the good-good, grass, sticky icky, the devil’s lettuce, wacky tobacky; whatever your name is for it, medical marijuana could have some, or all the answers an Oklahoma ailing vet needs. In recent years, medical marijuana has gained quite a bit of notoriety in its possible effectiveness towards several ailments. Oklahoma in 2017 passed SQ 788, legalizing medical marijuana for the state. This opened the doors for many individuals to be able to have an alternative medicine, with many opting out of taking the harder pharmaceuticals like prescription opiates in favor of

the stinky weed. While that was a massive steppingstone for the state, many veterans were still left without an alternative option to their daily drugs. Veterans still were not allowed to use medical marijuana being a federal employee and having to follow federal law, which still lists marijuana as a Schedule I drug. This year, however, OK veterans can rejoice and join in on medicating with everyone else! The U.S Senate recently approved a bill stating that veterans residing in legal states will no longer be denied benefits from the VA for consuming MMJ. Now, ailing vets across the state can have access to the same kind of medicine the rest of the state has, with no added stresses. On a state-

cannabis culture wide level, the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Association (OMMA) has acknowledged the new bill and has added that veterans with 100% disability receive a discount applying, making it only $20 to apply for a license. But where can you get a recommendation for your license? Most podiatrists, doctors of osteopathy, and medical doctors can recommend MMJ. VA physicians, however, are not allowed to recommend MMJ to their patients, but they are still encouraged to speak with their patients about the potentials of using MMJ in their treatment. Along with this rule, VA physicians cannot fill out any forms required by the patient to receive an MMJ license. So, when looking to get a license, it is best to go elsewhere for a recommendation letter. For those finding it hard to track down a physician willing to write a recommendation, there are clinicals held across the state where physicians set up booths and help get you a recommendation and even aid in filling out the online application form for a little extra fee. Why choose medical marijuana though? Over recent years, more and more studies on medical marijuana are taking place with even more positive findings than the last. MMJ has been found to improve many problems patients face. It is always worth giving a holistic, natural option a try when stacked against big pharmaceutical drugs. If

smoking is not in the cards, but you still wish to try medication then have no fear! There are several options available to patients including: oils, tinctures, edibles, vape-able concentrates, and topicals to name a few. Another beautiful side to having a license is that growing is also allowed! Growing your own medical marijuana not only has the obvious benefit of being able to harvest and enjoy what you have personally grown but can also provide a therapeutic and relaxing experience on its own.

Having access to an alternative medication in Oklahoma has been great, and now that same freedom is available to all the men and women who have sacrificed for their country and our freedom. Talk to your doctor about using medical marijuana in conjunction with any other medications you are taking. For many, it has lowered the number of daily pills. Now is the time to pack a bowl, or grab a brownie, and let the medicine of the earth work its wonders. Editor’s Note: Vets, if you need help with physicians, MMJ affordability or you want to know how MMJ can work for your specific issues, your local VFW has taken up the mantle to gather information and resources. If your local VFW is not doing this, call another. You are worth a few phone calls. Another group that wants to help Oklahoma veterans change their story is the Tulsa Vet Center. We were horrified to hear about the passing of more vape users. And, honestly, stunned. We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: DO NOT BUY BLACK MARKET VAPE CARTS! EVER!! Spend a few bucks and save your life. If it’s a money thing, you shouldn’t have habits you won’t pay for. Black market is dangerous business. Let’s stop the madness.

winterizing v winter grow by Amy Addams Are you planning your winter garden? Hats off to you. I’m always amazed by the die-hard gardener no matter the crop. Winter is TV catch-up time and these dedicated gardeners are hard at work growing things, making us lazy folks look, well, lazy. So, should you shut it all down or keep your grow going all year? There are extenuating circumstances of course. If you are indoors, a grow can be a good thing: your lights are not adding heat to you’re A/C bill (although LED’s run cool), but temperature, humidity, ice storm power outages and other winter things can creep in. You may get a big electric bill for equipment that runs harder in winter months or you may have the perfect environment. Your house could be entirely different than the one right next door. If you want to greenhouse, there are other factors, mostly OKIE factors: biggest, we are an uncertain state every winter. One winter, it’s warm and spring-like, the next, it’s

the backdrop of ‘Frozen’. Then there are the daily variances (yesterday, we were out in short sleeves, today, a jacket and two shirts), all a tad concerning where a good grow is concerned. There is some debate as to whether we get enough sun in Oklahoma, but the length of time the sun stays above the horizon was a bigger concern than its height in the sky. As for the humidity and air flow, you may be at the whim of the greenhouse unless you have electric running. If you have decided to brave the cold and take a shot at an outdoor grow, we’ll suggest that you go small if this is your first. The cold, temperatures and humidity can be issues you will have to address if we have a tough winter, but there is the added issue of days growing longer February to April. Lengthening days are a sign to your plants to stop all budding and grow. Some other factors to consider are:

1. Expenses. Yep, it’ll cost some money to grow over winter. Increased energy costs, you will want to replace your summer soil (that is critical), and you will need to buy extra nutrients than you needed for your summer grow. You may want to discuss this with your local grow supplier. Price the soils and additives and ask about future needs while you shop. You might also need pots, greenhouse repair materials, grow light bulbs, new surge protectors, etc.

Apparently not, but it’s not so bad.

If your grow was in a garage or cold room, you will need to take your tent down and put it away from winter’s wrath, but if you had your grow in a bedroom, you can leave everything up until you are ready to start again. If you set-up your lights 2. What are you growing? Are to match a spring into summer the strains you’re growing going grow, you may find that a winter to be tough enough? grow is no big deal (some new soil, chemicals and you can 3. Ask yourself if this is worth start up). Be honest: if you hate it. If you were a great summer winter and barely do the bare grower, we’ll get out of your way. minimum, it may not be wise to But, on the other hand… grow. Only you know this. Maybe you’ve decided to winterize after all.

If you are passing up a winter grow, now is a good time to clean, sort, inspect and Waitwha? What is this ‘winterize’ put away your supplies. It is of which you speak? We can’t also a good time to buy pots, just roll up the little tent thingy replacement bulbs and soil for and be done with all this for a the spring season that’s right while? around the corner.

UNCLE FUDGE’S FAVORITES WEDDING CAKE Looks can sure be deceiving. As I gazed out over the field full of pot, I wondered why the plants were so short. The tallest plants weren’t more’n 3 feet tall. I walked out into the field and looked at each of the plants individually. They were all Big ol’ Buds (like what you find at Big Buds dispensary in Owasso & Skiatook). When I say big, I mean they were the size of bananas...big, firm and tight. I been seein’ marijuana grown outside for forty-plus years and never have I seen nothin’ quite like these short plants that are all buds. I told them fellers growin’ the Oklahoma medicine, “The proof

is in the puddin’ -- how good is it?”

break a small piece off of the bud from Great American Strains, and stuff it into the end Fast forward a month or so and of my pinch hitter. As I touch a match to the end it gives off a sure ‘nuff I find this stuff in a sweet smell. Drawing the smoke dispensary in Skiatook called deeply into my lungs I discern Great American Strains. It’s a strain called Wedding Cake, but a fruity taste. As it expands, I cough a little upon exhale. I get it ain’t as purty as it was out in the field growing. The buds are another hit from the pinch hitter then sit back on the couch and still big, but they ain’t tight and well-manicured like the Wedding wait. Cake my friend Pam showed me from Pakalolo Dock in Skiatook. Soon I was feeling relaxed and stress free. The pain in my back eased up quite a bit, making Laying the buds side by side I me feel even better. However, was able to see the difference my mouth got drier’n a snake between Wedding Cake grown indoors and that grown outside. fart in the dust, and it made me hungrier than a short-necked Now it’s time for the puddin’. giraffe in a tall forest. That is I take out my pinch hitter and

the only downside I see from Wedding Cake. Pam took off with her sample before I got to try it, so I didn’t get to compare the results of the two methods of growing. On a scale of 1 through 5 I rate this a strong 4+. If you want to try some outdoor grown Wedding Cake by Red Earth Herbals, it is now available for sale at: Great American Strains located at 1298 W Rogers Blvd in Skiatook. the business of Cannabis:

i want to get into the mmj biz. where do i go? by TCB Staff primer on how much start-up capital you need might help you to make up your mind. This is not all-inclusive, but it’s a start: Dispensary license cost: $2,500 (you must pass a background check and prove your location is more than 1,000 feet from a school, has all local permits and not on tribal lands before you are approved). You must have a valid Oklahoma ID or passport, tax permit, dispensary location (with a name) and show that you are in good standing with the state and your taxes. You have 30 days to turn everything in. FYI: you’ll get a new bill for $2,500 a year from now.

We’ve (incorrectly) assumed that everyone just KNEW where to go if they wanted in on the bud, or flower biz. Do you want to be a dispensary owner? A grower? A processor? It can all happen with a visit to Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority’s website at www.omma.ok.gov. There, you can start on your way to finding doctors who will approve your start to card approval, the forms to get you on your way to owning

a MMJ biz along with lists of all the competition out there when you think you are ready to venture into the medical MJ world. It seems big and scary, but you may be surprised to see how many people in your town who you know are already in the know. If you are thinking that you are ready to start in the dispensary biz, we thought a

Your shop cost: This isn’t a clothing shop. You will need glass cases, security cameras, locking cabinets (maybe that bolt to the floor) or safes, alarm systems, safety glass, extra safety for doors, windows, cash and staff. Factor in rent, electric, phone, business cards, flyers and other start-up costs. They are real. How you handle your business: there are specialty businesses to help you, but they charge more (of course). You will need specialized help with preparing taxes and transporting cash to OKC to pay your tax

bill. Please do not avoid or ignore your state dues. Oklahoma pays attention even when you do not. You do not want to be reminded of past due amounts owed. Your staff: This is a big deal, even though you may be thinking you can flub your way through for a while. Retail is hard work. If you are not good at it, you’ll know in the first 30 minutes of opening your dispensary and you will fail in the first 30 days. You need to accept that staffing is important, and you will need people who are faithful, honest and dependable. You must return that as well. Treating good staff like they are replaceable or useless is a bad idea. Treat them respectfully but watch what they do not what they say.

same obligations. You may find that local rents are higher to dispensaries than to other businesses, you may find that getting product into your shop is a hassle and you will find that you are cash strapped quite often.

This is only the beginning. There are plenty of other items we left out because these are just the start-up costs. Keeping your business running has its own set of financial outputs in addition to those we’ve covered here. Are we telling you to leave your idea of opening a dispensary Incidentals: this can bleed your finances because there is so much here. Insurance, in the dust? Maybe. It’s banking, federally regulated business help and loans are not available in the same way not for to MMJ biz’s as to others, but you have the everybody.

It takes a lot of investment capital, a lot of patience, perseverance and guts. If you are nervous about your money, step away from your idea now. If you take great pleasure from a paycheck every two weeks, keep walking. If you just puked after reading this, RUN. A dispensary is not for you.

THE SHAKEDOWN - november Canna news you can use (and Trump’s phone number!) Will there be a test on this? The simple answer is YES. Oklahoma is requiring more robust testing for all MMJ sold at dispensaries. The cost is another $40 per pound, added into your cost. If you are truly thinking of your health, the new testing protocol will ‘weed’ out a lot of harmful pesticides, metals, microtoxins and other things from your cannabis. If Oklahoma is to remain medical, this will be a necessity as capitalism sometimes comes with a shortcut. Think of it as Oklahoma looking out for your health interests. Oklahoma hits 200K! When SQ788 hit the airwaves, some believed that we wouldn’t end up with 80,000 cardcarrying patients statewide. Turns out, we have over doubled that number - as of October 1 we are now at a whopping 200,000 legit patients turning to MMJ for help. We bet that 200,000 is only the beginning. As people gain a better understanding of what MMJ can do for them, those numbers will continue to grow. It’s only been 15 months. If you know someone who needs help getting off opioids, lives with chronic pain, has debilitating problems with epilepsy, Parkinson’s,

depression, PTSD (the list is so long), you may want to give them a hand in getting started on the path to feeling better. Visit www.omma.ok.gov to learn more on how to get an MMJ card and more.

If you were worried that illegals were going to take over here, your issues may be unfounded. marijuana prohibition part iiI: are we there yet by Amiea The “war on drugs”, is it coming to an end? As of right now, it seems to be going in that direction! We've come a long way in the Marijuana community. This just goes to show what we can do when we all band together and fight for our right to get the medicine that we so badly need. Take that big pharma! When we last left off, we were deep in the throes of the war on drugs. The Reagan era ‘just say no’ campaign (which we all know is a joke), D.A.R.E. (Also, a big joke), and police militarization. Thanks war on drugs….Not! There is a light at the end of this long drawn out tunnel. The 1980’s is when this took a more positive turn, Activism for the reform of marijuana prohibition started taking shape.

of a legally controlled market for cannabis”. They reside in Washington DC, they were founded in 1970 by Keith Stroup, also they were funded by the Playboy Foundation. Back when this foundation was started only 12 percent of people were for legalization and decriminalization. That didn't stop Keith Stroup from fighting for the cause.

Marijuana activists, there are too many to mention so we will just Morgan Freeman, yes that look at a few that have stood out Morgan Freeman has stated to me. in an interview with The Daily Beast “They used to say: You The first one is an organization smoke that stuff you'll get called NORML (National hooked! However it comes! to their website, NORML I’lI eat it, drink it, smoke it, "supports the removal of all snort it!” I think it's safe to say criminal penalties for the private he is definitely “hooked”. (Not possession and responsible use really an activism but, I felt it of marijuana by adults, including necessary to mention.) the cultivation for personal use, and the casual nonprofit Jack Herer, he is known as the transfers of small amounts", father of the modern movement. and "supports the development He is a repairman turned author

known for his book called The Emperor Wears No Clothes, A book that criticized political and big business for trying to demonize cannabis. He went on to sell 700,000 copies of this book while pushing for nationwide marijuana legalization. Unfortunately, Mr. Herer passed away in 2010 due to heart complications but his legacy lives on. The last one I’d like to mention is Mary Jane Rathbun also known as “Brownie Mary”. She was an American Marijuana

rights activist. She would volunteer at San Francisco General Hospital where she baked and distributed pot brownies to AIDs patients. Alongside Denis Paron, Rathbun fought for the legalization of cannabis for medical use, and she helped pass San Francisco Proposition P. which helped the establishment of the San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club, the first medical cannabis dispensary in the United States. She was arrested on three different occasions for possession, which caused a lot of outrage to the public. Eventually she was granted permission to distribute marijuana brownies to AIDs patients. Her arrest generated a lot of interest in the medical community and pushed researchers to do testing on the effects of Marijuana on HIV adults. There are so many more advocates but too many to mention here. It's crazy to see how so many people throughout history fought for their beliefs in Marijuana as a medicine. It's really opened my eyes to see a totally different side of the community. With all the negativity buzzing around today we need to remember what these people have done to fight for us to have what we do today! I hope to see Marijuana legalized federally someday. We've got a long way to go before that though.
