OIL DAY WITH SIMPLE CURE by Darrell Briggs
The second most celebrated day in cannabis culture is July 10th. This holiday is purported to have begun because 710 upside down backward spells OIL. Having used more than 20+ different brands of oil cartridges since getting my medical marijuana card, I wanted to know more about them and how they are made. Why do they all have different tastes? Why do some burn your
cartridges cost so much? Why does Simple Cure charge double what everyone else is charging for vape cartridges? LANCE: We are working hard to put out a great product at the fairest price we can. If they are all cannabis extracts, then why are their appearances different? And what I really want to know is why some companies are charging double what other companies charge for similar products? I reached out to Simple Cure in Oklahoma City, and asked Lance and Michael why their

It’s time for JeBuddary Think you know your marijuana strains? Know your Oklahoma laws? What about what happens if you go to another state as a card-carrying marijuana vaping medical patient? We’ve got a little quiz for you to take to see how much you really know: 1. What strain has the same name as a popular fruity brand of CHEWING gum? 2. If you have a party and serve marijuana instead of alcohol, as long as everyone is over 21, is already using medical marijuana and knowingly participates, everything is legal. T/F 3. What strain of marijuana was named after a popular Jimi Hendrix song? 4. It is legal to VAPE medical marijuana in a car, in a public establishment that allows vaping or in an approved public smoking area, but you cannot smoke flower in public any other way, flower can only be smoked at home. T/F 5. You can buy marijuana from anyone when you have a medical marijuana card if it has a state sticker on it. Any state sticker is okay. T/F 6. If you buy marijuana in another state, you can bring it back into Oklahoma, it is legal to do so, if you keep the receipt, wrap it up and put it in the trunk and you tell the police about it immediately if you are pulled over. T/F 7. What strain is named after a sweet treat you can only get once a year but might result in a copyright lawsuit to the people who named it? Hint? Sellers wear a sash. Three words. Answers are on page 21.

So what method of extraction makes the best kief, hash, rosin, tinctures, oils, shatter, pull and snap, wax, budder, crumble, honeycomb, distillate and crystalline? A big competition is brewing in Oklahoma between the growers and between the processors. I don’t know who will win the Colby and Frank prefer butane extraction competition in December, but I assert over other methods of extraction, while Lance and Michael from Simple Cure chose Oklahoma patients will be the real winners. I feel patients should consider what is in the mechanism and how the medicine makes them feel. It’s more than just packaging that distinguishes us, it’s a different kind of product, and we work really hard to support it.
I like to use the analogy of having two pre rolls. One from top shelf cannabis, and the other from something like brick weed. They’re both gram-and-a-half pre-rolls, so a reasonable expectation might be they should be the same cost because they are essentially both gram-and-a-half pre-
It would be easy for us to stretch our oil. We know there are other products on the market who do, but we choose to preserve the cannabinoids integrity by using pure cannabis extract all the time. We want to make the best medicine for Oklahoma patients. The best quality. That is what we strive for.

The dirt on DIRT, we’ll “bug” ya later by Amy Addams Many growers are well into the season, some into their second season, but 2019 has been tough. We’ve had a lot of rain (TOO much rain), pests, molds and just plain craziness. It’s been a season of ‘this is new’. Keep the faith. We’ve had crazy seasons before. Keep records. We are learning something new every day about this medical cannabis thing.
imagine how smart we would be if we took a class on growing? Her soil selection is a room full of bags. Literally. She tells us that the biggest soil seller is Aurora Innovations’ 707 Root Organics from Colorado. It does well in this area, providing the right base. It is recommended that you wait 10-14 days before adding nutrients to it.
We’re here to learn all we can to help you. Our goal is to gather as much data as possible and make it easy to understand then tell you where to go to get it. As any gardener will tell you, a great garden starts with a good foundation of good soil. Silt, sand, clay are all combined to create a bit of a loam soil that holds together when you squeeze it, but then falls apart. That is what grows good cannabis. If you are the kind of DIY-er that likes to claim that you did everything to grow your own, we found a ‘recipe’ on Leafly that pretty much covers it: www.leafly.com. However, if you are new to grow-your-own, don’t, just don’t. Right now, you want to see if you have the knack for it. Until you’re certain, spend the few bucks to buy soil at your local grow supply. We even went out and asked the staff at Skunk Grow Supply (located at 51st and Memorial in Tulsa) what they recommend. Trish gave us a lot of help just off the top of her head. Can you
If you are starting hydroponics, Skunk has a lot of knowledge, equipment, books, plant supplements, you name it, it’s there. Multiple shelves are stocked with all you need to be a successful medicinal cannabis grower, as is the brain power to get started. This is not a ‘jump in and see what happens’ thing. Smarten-up before you empty your wallet.
Can’t get to Tulsa? Here’s a tip: buy soil used to grow tomatoes and your cannabis should do well too. Cannabis and tomatoes are very similar plants. Got bugs? GAH! They are awful this year! They are always awful, but this year, I swear there are bionic bugs out there. Turns out, I’m half right. I spoke with an employee at the USDA/
TUE & THU 1 - 6 PM and by appt
The Current Buzz Vol 2 Issue 7 Organic (who cannot provide his name, as the federal government does not condone marijuana in any form at this time), who tells me that the trick to treating pests on tomatoes is consistency and confusion. You need to mask the smell of disease on your plants because it is an attractant to other pests, which is how things go bad so fast. To accomplish this, you may want to purchase organic bug sprays recommended at your grow supplier as well as make a few of your own. Tractor Supply has these awesome spray bottles for 99 cents as well as supplies too.

Aphids flourish in an environment where there is too much wet. Counter-intuitively, Spider mites love hot dry environments with you may want to start by spraying the aphids off your plants with water. Aphids underwatered plants. The first thing you need to do is STEP AWAY FROM THE WATERING CAN. These buggers like your wet soil. They leave their babies there, blech. Put a layer of sand on top of your soil, about an inch or two, and reduce the humidity if your grow op is indoors. Some people suggest Gnat Nix, but I cannot speak to it. I do know that these things are what happens when the gates of Hell have opened up but the Devil went back downstairs to take a phone call. If these things have moved in, get blue fly strips and place as many as you can tolerate (away from pets!). They will die fast and they don’t bite but I’m not a fan of bugs in my food and drinks. We hope you have a great grow season. If you have grow tips that have worked well for you, we’d love to hear about them. Send your special tips to: amy@thecurrentbuzz. net

AN OKLAHOMA PIONEER BRINGS SCIENCE, COMPASSION AND FUN TOGETHER IN ONE DISPENSARY by June Lane
With a new dispensary popping up on seemingly every corner these days, finding the RIGHT medical marijuana products for your issues can be daunting. On the other hand, if you are just dispensary shopping for all the deals and feels, even the state of Oklahoma won’t be able to wipe the grin off your face when you enter an Urban Wellness Dispensary. Lawton native, Jeffrey Flowers, owner and proprietor of U.W.D., with locations in Edmond, O.K.C., and Norman, has managed to blend the fun side of this industry with a much more serious medical approach, in order to help patients get the
most benefits from All Things Cannabis. The first thing you will notice upon entering his dispensary is how much more apothecary it appears than head shop. It›s light, open, well-stocked, and you are free to roam about and explore the nice selection of beauty and makeup products along with CBD infused bath and body goodies. Flowers started studying CBD and THC and the amazing cancer-fighting properties they hold when his mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2012. Thankfully, she is doing well now but the Mon-Fri 10a-6p Sat 12p-6p

frustration of not being able to help her, even with the nasty side effects from chemo, drove him to continue studying uses and benefits of cannabis. He is continuing his education with the Medical Marijuana Institute and recently completed the 13-hour AAFP accreditation class for medical doctors wanting to learn more about cannabis for their practices. Flowers›s commitment to continuing education is evident in his desire to help patients that are seeking compassionate, alternative medical treatments for their issues and don›t know where to begin. His network of cannabis research centers that he stays in regular contact with include the University of Jerusalem, which has been researching the benefits and uses of cannabis for decades. Flowers and his staff at U.M.D. are eager to reach out to new cannabis patients that would feel more comfortable with a tailored ‹just for their specific issues› approach. They have an arrangement with D.L.O. labs in Oklahoma City for patients to give a baseline blood test. The test is a c/ reactive protein count determining the level of inflammation in your body. Based on your blood work along with a medical questionnaire with your history, they can begin to formulate a treatment plan for you. Flowers is committed to keeping the cost manageable
for everyone, so the total patient cost for the test is $37.00. HERE›S THE COOL PART: Armed with all with all this knowledge, U.W.D. will custom blend a tincture including various terpenes, CBDs and isolates, just for you, along with dosage instructions. They start with small free trial samples so you can work with them, «tweaking terpenes»(if I were a singer, that would have to be my band›s name!) until you feel happy with your medicine. They will retest you again in six to eight weeks with another CPR blood test checking for reduced inflammation. Flowers believes so strongly that you can be helped with this approach, he will refund your cost if you feel you are not. Also, if you do not have a medical card or do not want any psychotropic effects, they can customize THC free or low dosage tinctures. Jerry Flowers is a true Trailblazer in these early Canna Crazy days, and his U.W.D. dispensaries are making a name and a niche, as innovators empowering anyone seeking answers along with new medical choices. Jerry Flowers’ Urban Wellness Dispensary Norman location can be found at 1303 E. Lindsey Plaza Drive with the OKC location at 1515 NW 23rd St and the Edmund location at 33 W. 15th Street.

NEW TO THIS LESSON 1: “DON”T GO TO A DISPENSARY, I’ve GOT a guy” by Amy Addams
Plenty of wizened weed veterans have told me they could get me flower, vape cartridges and cookies for about 60-80 percent of what my local dispensary charges. I’m always a skeptic (sue me), so I started asking where these bargains came from. The answer was usually California, sometimes Colorado. No biggie, right?
Never has it been so wrong. As a matter of fact, buying black market weed (can’t call this Medical Marijuana or Medical Cannabis) may take down all the states’ rights once the FDA gets tired of sending mean threat letters to California’s 50,000 illegal grow ops. The reasons why are numerous, and a few may cost you dearly if these ops don’t comply (I doubt
they will though). First, these grow ops are not a bunch of barefoot tie dye hippies ‘sticking it to the man, man’. These people are sticking it to you, me, the man, pretty much everybody, including children, local wildlife, dogs, you name it. They have no organic standard operating procedures in place, they use
chemicals that are toxic, and they are only concerned about their profits. They do not pay California’s tax nor do they allow the state to inspect what they do. Some of the chemicals they use are combustible, can cause organ failure, blindness or kill users (including children). An independent research company bought black market marijuana from all over the

Chemical levels two to 32 times higher than normal levels were found as well as chemicals that should not be exposed to heat or flames. year, he will wrap up his pharma lawsuits and will be ready to sue the marijuana industry for the insane THC levels of medical marijuana, but first he’s going after the chemicals that get marijuana users sick inadvertently, starting with California’s illegal grow ops. Part two of his attack will be Colorado and budtenders selling marijuana to pregnant women, claiming marijuana’s safety. You see, Colorado’s newborn weights recently declined sharply, and women in Colorado claim the budtenders told them marijuana during pregnancy was good, even telling them it helped with various issues from morning sickness to gestational diabetes. Making untrue/ inaccurate medical claims may be the second nail in medical
marijuana’s coffin, but it’s a damn big one. We will have more on this attorney and his game plan to ruin all hope for marijuana before it even gets off the ground.

Beyond Brownies by Amy Addams the gist of the genesis of edibles – Decarboxylation or Decarbing The purpose of our recipes is to help you work with Medical Marijuana (or MM for spacing reasons) when you don’t want it in your lungs. We do our best to give you all you need to rock your recipes with minimal fuss and equipment, but if you are going to make edibles, you need to decarboxylate your MM. If you do it right and take your time, decarbing is no big deal. You got this.
What is Decarboxylation (AKA: Decarb, Decarbing) is the oldest organic chemical reaction around, along with its opposite reaction, photosynthesis (carboxylation). When cannabis releases carbon dioxide and water on a cellular level, THCA from the plant is converted to THC, smoking MM does this through heat; and when it goes into your lungs, it releases the THC. Baking it in the oven does this as well, but the THC stays with the MM. THCA can also convert to THC by aging MM in a dark place (doing the opposite of photosynthesis) for a REALLY long time. If you are interested more in the science behind it, Wikipedia has a well-written description. Tip: DO NOT buy ‘pre-decarbed’ buds from a local dealer offering you a too-good price. It’s a scam. They took most of the little THC crystals produced by decarbing. You will need: • Medical Marijuana (we have an ultraeasy Cannabutter recipe too) • TWO baking pans (metal or glass are great, disposable aluminum are not recommended), one should fit inside of the other easily.
• aluminum foil • parchment paper (not necessary, but great for protecting your buds from scorching, browning too fast and keeping your crystals from sticking to the pan. It is also good for seeing everything after you’ve decarbed. It’s $4 per roll at WalMart, has other uses, you have over $100 of MM. Don’t get cheap. • An oven in good working order (not a toaster oven) • An oven thermometer (optional, if you have an oven you know is accurate) • A timer • Optional: EverClear, used to stop Cannabutter from becoming green, we’ll explain later, just get a little $2-3 one that holds a tablespoon’s worth. If you take to decarbing, you can buy more later • Optional: spray bottle for Everclear (see previous item, above). You can use a spoon if you need to. Thanks to High Times for this tidbit of info. It truly works! Instructions: Turn the oven to 240 degrees Fahrenheit (115 C) to preheat. Put the smaller baking pan inside the larger. (WHY? It provides an insulation against rapid heating and allows crystallization to happen unimpeded by heat. Using one pan, the oven turning on its heat (as a quick blast to keep its temperature up) interrupted the process. That extra pan really helped protect the bud from rapid heating/cooling. Cut a piece of parchment to fit inside the smaller pan and place it inside. Over the parchment, break your buds into small pieces about the size of M&M’s or a fingernail. You will want to pull out larger stem bits and set the seeds in aside (You may have future baby plants there). Make sure the marijuana is a thin layer with no overlaps yet close together. If you use a processor, go gentle. You want it lumpy.
Tear off a piece of foil to fit over the pan and cover. Bake for one hour, turning at 35 minutes (that’s what worked best, I don’t know why). Remove from oven and remove foil cover. Place on a cooling rack and allow to cool for 10-12 minutes. Spray lightly with Everclear in spray bottle. WHY: Everclear breaks down some of the cellulose (what makes plants green), thereby keeping the Cannabutter from becoming too green. Be real: green chocolate chippers are pleh. You can also spoon Everclear lightly over the decarbed MM and mix it around if you only have spray bottles of questionable origins.
Make Cannabutter: Since you’ve stunk up the house, might as well go for broke. We have a simple Cannabutter recipe that anyone with a pulse and a slow cooker (Crock Pot) can make. You will do better with a smaller Crockpot than a larger one (about $15-20 at WalMart), so if you are serious about future edibles, they’re worth the money. For every pound of Cannabutter, you need oneounce MM (keeping in mind your dosing): 1 pound butter (four sticks, 16 ounces) to oneounce MM (28 grams) ½ pound butter (2 sticks, 8 ounces) to ½ ounce MM (14 grams) ¼ pound butter (1 stick, 4 ounces) to 1/4-ounce MM (7 grams) After you’ve sprayed Everclear on your MM, you will want to let it cool another 20 minutes. During that time, unwrap sticks of butter into
The Current Buzz Vol 2 Issue 7 a pot on the stove and melt them over low to medium heat, stirring every few minutes until melted. You can put butter into the slow cooker, just make sure they have started to melt before adding MM.

The Easy JELLO CannaCandy (uses possibilities are endless, as is the timeCannaButter OR Tincture) Homemade space continuum….. Suckas, Sucka! Directions: We can’t give you a quantity as we don’t know how much cannabutter you will use or the size Mix the Corn Syrup, cannabutter (and/or mold. So easy, my DOG can do this (but he tincture) and sugar in the saucepan using a gets fur in them, Ew). They are tasty, but not longer handled spoon. Over medium heat, bring
contents to a boil stirring constantly, then clip the thermometer in the pan, being careful to not rest it on the bottom. Cook the sugar/syrup while stirring until the temperature reaches 275 F/135C. Remove the pan from the burner and remove the thermometer from the pan. Slowly pour the Jello into the pot while stirring. Add a drop or two of flavoring, then pour into molds. Do not wait to pour into the molds unless you want one big stoner Lifesaver. The candy sets up in seconds. If your candy got ahead of you, return it to the stove, heat it over medium low heat and try again. If you’re on strike 2, pour it into a pan, smash it down as thin as possible, let it harden and break it apart. Your dosing will be meaningless, but you’ll have a fabulous story to tell your great grandkids someday.

your medical cannabis primer: extraction, extracts, and hash oil by Amy Addams extraction with a solvent. Of all the processes, only ONE we feel is ‘newbiesafe’; the Rosin Technique (below). We’ll give you a little knowledge of the others to make you dangerous, so please don’t use it. Physical Extraction Methods:
We promised to teach you more about this new world of Medical Marijuana (MM to save space). Today’s lesson is about EXTRACTION: what it is, why it’s done, how it’s done, the expected results, and how the resulting product is used.
1. Ice Hash: ice is mixed with flower and water and filtered through fine screens where the resin is collected and dried. 2. Drying and Curing: hash is made when dried and cured buds are run through a screen where the trichomes are collected. We’ve simplified this a lot, but generally, the screening process of banging the screens or rolling the buds in a tumbler (called a ‘pollen collector’) is called keifing. 3. Finger Hash (or Charas): this gets its name from the sticky brown goo you get on your hands when you trim buds. If you put some (clean) latex gloves on when you trim buds, then freeze the gloves for 15 minutes, the resin on them will harden and can be gathered into a ball of hash to use.
Extraction, simply put, is the process of pulling the waxes, oils and compounds such as trichomes, terpenes and cannabinoids from the MM flower via mechanical Chemical Extraction Methods: or chemical processes. Most of what extraction takes out of the bud are the oils 1. Alcohol Extraction: soak buds in that protect the plant from animals eating high-proof ethanol, then allow to dry it or provides a sunscreen to the DNA in either naturally or over a low heat the seeds. All of these oils are trichomes. allows the residue to dry and stick to If a female plant is pollinated, it will stop container (glass is recommended). producing trichomes and use its energy on This can be dangerous as alcohol growing seeds and reproducing. fumes can become flammable or explosive. Generally, there are two broad categorical 2. Rosin Technique: this is one types of extraction: physical extraction technique you can use at home, and resin head collection OR chemical using a hair straightening iron,
parchment paper, and cannabis. Fold parchment paper around your MM and use the straightening iron to squeeze and heat the oils out of the cannabis. The oils will form a halo around the bud onto the paper (they won’t absorb into parchment). Scrape oil and use in vaping, shatter rigs or food. Now, this is where I get lost. All the dang NAMES! Most of the extraction methods net very similar results, with the look being more what defines the name of the resulting product than anything else. What many of the names define are butane hash oil or BHO, CO2 oil or hydrocarbon extracts for our tech readers, but for the canna-savvy folks, shatter, wax, budder, oil, honeycomb, sap, pull-and-snap, dabs, vape oil, tincture, hash, CBD oil, and concentrate. What I found was this: what your resulting extract looks like will be its definition. A clear, hard extract will be named shatter, but a cloudy, soft extract will be named wax. It’s not nearly as complex now that you know how the extracts get their names, eh? So, the naming ceremony happens after the extract is born, like waiting to name a baby Ginger, or Ebony or Blanca. You can’t use names like those until you know the color scheme. If the experiment with the straightening iron laid out your life’s path like a vision, there are plenty of companies out there looking for knowledgeable people who know the science and have the artist’s touch. You’ll want to read up beyond this before submitting your resume, but you could be the next bud whisperer. Make sure you tell your employer that The Current Buzz gave you your first big break, okay?

UNCLE FUDGE’S FAVORITES I keep hearing about a date coming up called OIL Day. Supposedly July 10 turned upside down, sideways and spun around will spell OIL. Another National Holiday for Cannabis Consumption. We didn’t need a holiday to smoke weed in the 70’s. We had a group of fellers in Tahlequah who got together daily with the sole intent of smoking a lot of pot. We called ourselves “The Smoke a Lid a Day Club.” In retrospect, it was pretty easy to smoke that much weed when it was “water leaves” and “spider tops.” Most of the plants would never mature because we kept pulling leaves off of them, putting them in a pillowcase, and throwing them in a clothes dryer at the laundry in hopes of drying the leaves sufficiently to smoke. Don’t misunderstand me. There was good pot in the 70’s. A few folks, who lived over near Stilwell, grew good pot on their chicken farm. They grew some big ol’’ buds we called “steer pods” because they didn’t have any seeds in them. Kinda like the calves who had been “cut” on our dads’ farms in order to keep them from tearing down the fence to get at the cows. So how does all of this B.S. tie into OIL Day? Well, I have been

puffing on a vape cartridge a couple of times while writing this article, so you can tell I am all over the place with this story. But what I really like about the vape cartridge is my ability to use it discreetly and effectively control my dosage. By taking a couple of very small puffs, I can medicate myself throughout the day without becoming too stoned to function in my daily life. I can partake just enough to manage my severe back pain without the use of oxycodone. That, my friends, is what medical marijuana is all about.

THE SOURCE EXTRACT MACHINE
THE MAGICAL BUTTER MACHINE The Magical Butter machine is a foolproof way to make cannabisinfused butter. If you are a medical marijuana patient who prefers edibles over flower, this machine will enable you to make your own medicine. Their technology allows even the first timer to extract biomass (weed) directly into cooking oil, alcohol, and lotions. I enjoyed the herbal butter Cheryl made for me over the extract I concocted with vegetable glycerin. I was trying to make something I could vape in a cartridge and would be effective. My attempt failed, but I bet you will find plenty of uses for a Magical Butter machine. Warranty is invalid unless purchased directly from the manufacturer. For more information: www.magicalbutter.com
The Source by ExtractCraft is a safe, efficient closed loop extractor ideal for home use. This machine allows you to reclaim the solvent (190 proof denatured alcohol) after the extraction process. Connect to your smartphone to automatically set your location’s altitude, allowing for optimal vacuum and temperature balance, for peak extraction performance at any altitude. On normal mode it operates at around 100 degrees to preserve terpene, aroma, and flavor. It was easy to make oil for tincture, but we found the process to shatter was more than we were willing to tackle. We liked the money saving feature of solvent reclamation but didn’t like the initial purchase price. Both of these machines work well for home extraction making your own medicine. However, we liked the Magical Butter machine best because of low initial investment and it cleans itself. If you enjoy edibles and oils, either of these machines will be a welcome addition to your home. EDITOR’S NOTE: The Current Buzz purchases every product reviewed.
