LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to Issue 4! The end of the year is fast approaching. There’s only a month left, and with test season coming to a close, to quote the iconic Phoebe Bridgers, “I guess the end is here”. You may be confused about what’ll happen next. You may be scared. But just remember that in the end, everything will work out. You’ll be okay.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Spotify recently. I fnd music relaxing and comforting, especially during stressful times. Music is deeply ingrained within our culture, and it tells stories in a diferent medium than written ones. This issue examines the musicality of our school. You’ll see what it’s like to make an album, or how a new concert came to be, and what drumline does in practice.

Got a story (or song) suggestion? Make sure to DM it to us on Instagram, @enneagles!

Now, go out and enjoy the warm weather!

RESTRICTING TIKTOK

By far the most relevant app for teens these days is TikTok, with 16% of American teenagers using it constantly, according to a Pew Research survey. During the pandemic, its user base grew exponentially, going from 381 million people in 2019 to 800 million in 2023. It’s also introduced a wide range of trends to the general public. But the app’s future in this country may be in stormy waters. Introduced in March of this year, the RESTRICT Act (also known as the “TikTok ban” bill) calls for the “review and prohibit[ion of] certain transactions between persons in the United States and foreign adversaries.” Essentially, it would restrict the use of programs made to communicate with select countries. However, there is one clause that states that “considerations” will be made for “so ware designed or used primarily for communicating via the internet,” including mobile applications. e bill also speci cally lists China as one of these “foreign adversaries”–meaning this is applicable to Chinese-owned TikTok. Additionally, the bill

could also restrict the use of VPNs.

is is not the rst time TikTok’s ownership has been under re. In 2020, former president Trump attempted to ban TikTok in the U.S. for similar security reasons. ere’s also some precedent

for this move: other countries, including India and Iran, have already banned public usage of TikTok.

Now, the question remains: will the RESTRICT Act pass? It’s unclear. On one hand, it is bipartisan. It was introduced by Mark Warker, a Democratic Senator from Virginia, and has since been cosigned by 25 members of Congress (13 Republicans, 11 Democrats, and 1 Independent). On the other hand, the bill’s vague wording may raise a few red ags once it hits the Congress oor. Clarity will likely be needed if it has a chance of passing. Additionally, there have been concerns raised over the bill’s legality, speci cally in regards to the “free speech” clause in the 1st amendment. Censorship has been a historically controversial topic for many Americans—another hurdle for Congress to pass.

TikTok’s fate now lies in the hands of our Congresspeople. But, no matter what the outcome is, the controversy surrounding it highlights the issue of censorship in this country.

Timeline of the Drama Department during spring

APRIL 17TH,

Although it may not feel like spring yet, production for EPHS’s Spring Play and Spring Showcase have been underway for over a month. This year the drama department chose Clue by Sandy Rustin and These Shining Lives by Melanie Marnich. Mrs. Nebeker, the director of this year’s spring showcase shared the reason for having two shows. The simple answer is that it gives more students the opportunity to participate in a play! And to distinguish the two shows, they are given diferent titles and diferent show dates. The spring showcase always happens at the end of April while the spring play’s dates are always in early May.

APRIL 24TH,

It is a week later and both shows are ofcially in tech or dress week. These are the two weeks leading up to the opening of a show where all cast and crew stay after school every night to do full run-throughs of their show. These Shining Lives is 4 days from opening and Clue has just under two weeks until their shows start. Stage crew for Clue have been hard at work for weeks building a special foor, which will be the centerpiece of their set, while These Shining Lives’s tech built a rake, or angled, stage for their set. The casts for both shows have also been ramping up for opening night. More costumes, wigs, and other props are starting to be incorporated into the show to start preparing for the big nights ahead.

MAY 6TH,

It is closing night of Clue, and These Shining Lives has been over for a week. Both shows had an incredible turnout every night they were running, and although very diferent shows, were loved by audiences alike. These Shining Lives got praise for its incredible dramatic acting and unique set and the word from quite a few audience members was that Clue was the best comedy play to be put on by EPHS yet. Spring shows can also be bittersweet for some participants. Since they are the last full productions of the school year they are a moment for many seniors to shine and close out their time in theater. EPHS’s theater dept thanks everyone that took time out of their weekends to come see the shows, and remember to come to the last show of the year: Broadway Extravaganza on June 1st and 2nd!

The Psychology of Music

“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, fight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything”. - Plato

Like many others, I need to listen to music daily, it is an essential part of my daily routine. Listening to music is an enigmatic human behavior traced back to the Paleolithic period that may have been a form of communication between early humans. The history of music is rich and varied, with diferent cultures and periods producing music used for a variety of purposes, including religious ceremonies, celebrations, entertainment, and art. The earliest sign of music is The Hurrian Hymn: this piece is part of about 36 hymns that were found in Ugarit, Syria. This is the oldest surviving melody and is over 3,400 years old.

In terms of psychology, music has displayed several efects on the human brain. For instance, listening to music can release dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure. Humans are frst introduced to sound between the frst 12 and 16 weeks in the womb, initially creating audio-triggered responses in the brain. Music is a robust and emotional experience for many people, as its algorithmic sound sends signals to the fve parts of the brain, creating an emotional and sometimes physical response. The way the human brain responds to sound, and the understanding of music theory/composition, can allow musicians to build patterns and harmonic structures.

Musicians have diferent brains from those who are not musically profcient. The brain responds and reacts constantly, it reorganizes patterns and adapts to what we become conditioned to. According to Neuroscience News, musicians’ brains have stronger brain structure and function, along with better memory than non-musicians. With these cognitive advantages, it can be said that musicians may actually have a higher I.Q. Therefore, you could argue that musicians are quite superior.

Studies done by music therapy practitioners at the National Institute of Health have found that music can not only alter mood. But it can also alter pain and heart rate. For example, more upbeat music can stimulate adrenaline and increase blood pressure, whereas slow music has the opposite efect. But this study is quite relative. What one person considers relaxing music is subjective to another. So when choosing music with a desired emotional outcome in mind, this is a way of using music as a mood regulator. With music’s combination of rhythm, pitch/tone, and volume — there is no other stimulus as complex.

Studies show you can now judge people by their music taste after all, but only to some degree. This suggests that one’s music taste often defines who they are.

The data below is from “Music Preferences and Your Personality” By Kendra Cherry.

Pop- Extroverted, honest, and conventional. Although pop music lovers were hardworking and had high self-esteem, researchers suggest that they are less creative and more uneasy than those enamored by other musical styles. Rap/hip hop-Despite the stereotype that rap lovers are aggressive or violent, the researchers found no such link. However, the rap fans tended to have high self-esteem and were generally more outgoing than fans of other styles.

Country- These fans typically identifed as hardworking, conventional, outgoing, and conservative. Although country music frequently centers on heartbreak, people who prefer it tend to be emotionally stable. They also ranked lower than others in openness to experience.

Rock/heavy metal- Rock and heavy metal often project images of anger, bravado, and aggression. However, this study found such fans to be gentle, creative, and introverted. They also tended to have low self-esteem.

Indie- Fans of the indie genre registered as introverted, intellectual, and creative, but less hardworking and gentle than fans of other styles. Passivity, anxiousness, and low self-esteem were other notable personality characteristics.

Classical- The study’s classical music lovers were generally somewhat introverted but at ease with themselves. Creativity and healthy self-esteem were common among them.

Jazz, blues, and soul- Extroverted with high self-esteem. They also tend to be very creative, intelligent, and at ease.

A survey went around EPHS asking students what genre they fnd the most relaxing, and Indie won by a high majority. Indie is a sub-genre of rock music that originated in the 1970s and 1980s. This genre has a natural progression and is full of inclusivity and breaking boundaries. All in all, indie music has many psychological benefts. It can help decrease stress, anxiety, depression, and even better memory.

Music seems to possess much power over people. It allows us to connect with ourselves and one another. A study done at the University of Chicago found that the music you listen to may be able to tell how your brain processes information. This research suggests that humans have two ways of reacting to the world: empathizing (social cues/understanding others emotions) and systemizing (the drive to analyze and construct systems). Empathizers enjoy emotionally rich music ranging from indie, rock, folk, and country. While systemizers gravitate towards structural music, like classical and jazz. A result of this study also showed that empathetic people feel music diferently than others. In general, those that are more empathetic have distinct brain patterns which make them more sensitive to things like words and sounds. This could mean the music people intake may resonate very personally. On the other hand, systemizers have a strong interest in systems, and the rules that manage the world. With that said, this group prefers music with much intellectual complexity, as heard in most classical genres.

For many of us, music is a part of who we are and how we identify with ourselves. The connection between music taste and personality has become so strong that we often fnd ourselves quick to judge and skim one’s music playlists to understand them more. However, many stereotypes can still lie in this judgment, we still classify ourselves and others within certain genres. Research done by Myers–Briggs has linked genres with the 16 personality types.

The goal of any musical artist is to build a passionate fanbase through good music. The easiest way to do that is to create an album built around a variety of songs. But the album recording process is easier said than done. For many artists, it takes many years to produce and perfect their projects.

One EPHS teacher has been through the album recording process himself. ENN teacher Perry Kennedy is the drummer for a local punk-rock band, Nemesissy (described by Kennedy as “childlike and sinister”, for the past three years. Over the course of those three years, they have been writing and recording their EP Nonfction. He ofered some insight on what the process is like.

First, it all starts with an idea. Songwriters write and rewrite their songs, some over the course of months, some in the course of a day. Of the seven songs on Nonfction, fve “were written when [Kennedy] joined the band, but they weren’t really fushed out”. Meanwhile, a song not on the EP (check out their YouTube) came to life more quickly: “Within two hours, we have the song.”

After perfecting the songs, the artists then get to work on creating the stories of the album. Some center their albums around a certain theme or message, while others go for a more abstract route, as was the case with Nemesissy. “We’re a hodgepodge,” says Kennedy. Nemesissy’s songwriters like to create their own characters and write about them, such as “Hat Girl”: “I remember seeing this girl around with this hat all the time, I wonder what happened to her. So let’s make her a character and write a song about her.” Or there’s “Trash Wife”: “Our two singers were cleaning and picking up laundry while they’re sipping wine and watching Netfix, and they thought, ‘I’m such a trash wife!’ So they wrote this.” Or they might not even use characters

With the right connections, artists can even get signed on to be the openers for bigger tours. “Get your stuf out there and that will help promote you too.”

What about advice for aspiring musicians? “It’s easier than you think,” says Kennedy. “Start. If you don’t know where to start, start. Cofee shops, friends’ bedrooms, record yourself.” It’s easier than ever to make your own music: “Open up GarageBand, and there’s a lot of quick mastering tools that you can do on there. And you can give that stuf to someone if you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself.” You just have to start somewhere: “The more you do it, the more experienced you’re gonna get, and then the more success you’ll get.”

Get To Know The EPHS Music Teachers!

Mr. Whipkey has taught band at EPHS for twenty fve years. This year he teaches both ninth-grade bands, Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic Band. His favorite memory from teaching was when he took his students on tour to Germany, Italy, and Austria. The students got the opportunity to eat lunch in St. Peters Square in Venice and then ride in the famous gondolas. Mr. Whipkey believes all students should join music because “it is an artistic force that holds people together and allows us to express and feel the emotion in several diferent ways. It is kind of a mysterious force of nature.”

Mrs. Rowell has been teaching at EPHS for fourteen years. She loves orchestra and teaches all of the orchestra classes here: ninth grade, Philharmonic, Concertino, and Concert. Her funniest memory was during a Disney tour before COVID when a student accidentally broke the neck of a bass. The funny part was the way her students told her–they told her to sit down before they could tell her what had happened. She had thought a student got hurt or worse. When she found out the truth, she could not stop laughing. Mrs. Rowell would love for every student to fnd their passion in music: “I think for a variety of reasons. Number one being there’s a lot of research about how it develops the brain similar to a second language and decoding. So it can help diferent neural connections. There’s a lot of linking to it with like mathematical like, deduction skills and you learn collaboration and leaning on your peers and colleagues. And I think it’s, it can show dedication, and what hard work can pay of for the concert.”

Mrs. Boyd has worked in the choir department at EPHS for sixteen years. She teaches treble, bass, concert, and chamber choir. Her favorite memory of teaching was when she had her students sing in the middle of the United Nations building, and as they sang, diplomats from all over the world stopped what they were doing to listen to them sing. Mrs. Boyd loves the human voice the most, and she believes in her students with her whole heart. “I think it’s a great break in the day. I think it’s a real gift to our students to have the opportunities that they have here. Especially the music opportunities. In a lot of places around the world, you have to pay, you have to be a really rich kid. You have to be in the right city or the right town in order to have access to music programs. I think we forget about how fortunate we are to have music ofered for everybody here as part of [our] education.”

Mrs. Moreaux has been working in the Eden Prairie school district for seven years, both here at the High School and at Forest Hills Elementary. Mrs. Moreaux teaches the Symphonic Orchestra and co-teaches the ninth-grade choirs and Music Insights. Her funniest memory was from when she frst started teaching here at the high school. While she was learning and getting used to her baton it would often catch on the music stand in front of her or she would drop it. One day the baton got caught on her stand again and few out of her hand and landed in one of her students’ hair. This dog-loving teacher loves bringing joy into the school with music: “I think you should do it because it gives you joy. And I just can’t fathom why if you were involved in a community of music making you would ever stop… You could have this joyful experience. And I think we need a little bit more of that.”

Minnesota Based Musician Spotlights

Creeping Charlie

After seeing Creeping Charlie live many times, I can confdently say that they are a force to be reckoned with. Just like the ivy they’re named after, these fantastic group of musicians will stick with you long after your frst listen.

After swiftly taking the title as one of the Best New Bands of 2022, decided by First Avenue and the Current, they have headlined show after show here in Minneapolis, as well as having a residency at Amsterdam Bar and Hall. Currently, they are preparing for a busy summer full of shows. Along with opening for other artists, with each show they play, the bigger audience they accumulate.

The band consists of Julia Eubanks, the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter; Esmé Eubanks, bassist; Jack Malone, drums; and Harry Miles, guitar.

Together they are “making music for cool older sisters” as described by Julia. They have released 1 EP, 2 singles, and 1 album. Their frst release was

Asymmetrical in May of 2020, followed by their two singles in 2021, leading to their most recent album: How to Kill Creeping Charlie. Imagine if Patti Smith’s ‘Horses’ combined with Mazzy Stars’ ‘So Tonight That I Might See’, that combination is ‘How to Kill Creeping Charlie’. With their music being available on all streaming platforms, it’s a must to check them out! There is also a new album growing (but you didn’t hear that from me)… While listening, you may learn some gardening skills along the way.

Keep For Cheap

What is more ftting for Eden Prairie than a prairie rock band?

Keep For Cheap is an up and coming band, stemming from Minnepolis. The two lead singers and guitarists, Autumn Vagle and Kate Malanaphy, teamed together with Robert Northrup, Grace Berg, and Ted Tiedemann to create what is known now as Keep For Cheap.

Their debut single, “Day Without You” was a hit, gathering close to 2 million streams. This has led them to their most recent and current North America healdining tour! With fun new music on the way, both with the band and solo, make sure to keep up to date with their newest fun releases.

Pat Díaz: Adoring, angst, and adolescence

“I keep this little black book that I got last year with me pretty much everywhere I go. I got it as a planner to keep track of my homework, but after maybe two days of using it for that, I started drawing and writing things in it instead.”

Pat Díaz, senior, begins to explain his process for coming up with, writing, and producing songs. Currently, he’s working on his upcoming EP; Adoring, angst, and adolescence. Since his appearance in the Eyrie last year, he has been focusing on music as a solo artist under the name ‘Foolhearty’.

Adoring, angst, and adolescence will have 4 tracks; I love it when you call me baby, Stained Sheet Blues, Penelope, and And Her Deliverance. Each track embodies one or more of the adjectives in the title. Díaz begins with explaining one of the tracks, Stained Sheet Blues,

“I guess it’s about growing up. I started writing the song about growing up with Catholicism and religion being forced on me. That stuf just never really clicked for me. Then it transitions into the theme of giving love but not receiving love in return. However, I didn’t write it with a specifc idea in mind, so it’s ended up being a culmination lot of things.”

While Stained Sheet Blues

With the hope for Adoring, angst, and adolescence to come out before the school year is done, Díaz is still reeling in inspiration for his work. Mainly coming from connections–friends, family, and relationships–his inspiration and creation

Díaz’s top albums

has been fowing for years, “I started really writing when I was in middle school, and it really sucked. I didn’t do anything with it but I feel like if I did, I would have learned more about how to structure songs better and how to foat creatively more. And so if you just keep going, even if the ideas feel really bad, it’ll help them the good ideas really come.”

most heavily leans on adolescence, the song is an ode to all three adjectives. He then goes into detail about And Her Deliverance, a song that started out because of a single chord,

“After messing around and fnding that chord, I didn’t know what to do with it for a long time. I still decided to put it on the EP because it transitioned perfectly from Penelope. There have been a lot of drafts for lyrics, and I’m still trying to fnd the right ones, but I’m getting a lot closer to fnishing the writing and starting

Spotlight on Eden Prairie Drumline

If you have ever been to a home football game, when it’s not raining, you have most likely seen an Eden Prairie Marching Band performance. Within our marching band are many of our drumline players.

Drumline is a winter activity, where the spotlight is on the percussion section of the band. It consists of “Frontline” and “Battery.” The Frontline consists of marimbas, auxiliary, vibraphones, one xylophone, synth, and glockenspiel. Battery consists of the bass drum, snare drum, tenor drums, and cymbals.

A lot of hard work goes into Drumline. They usually practice about 6 to 7 hours a week together. On top of those practices, the musicians also practice on their own time. Jared Olson, the director of Eden Priaire Drumline, described how

This year’s show, “Some Assembly Required”, was inspired by the sitcom trope of building IKEA furniture. The performance is entertaining and full of talent. The precision of every note shows how much efort every player has put in this season.

On April 20-22, Eden Prairie competed at the WGI Percussion World Championship in Dayton, Ohio. Eden Prairie High School placed 21st out of 42 programs competing at the WGI World Championships. Their fnal score was 86.25.

All this hard work would mean nothing without teamwork. Luckily, our drumline seems to have a great sense of community.

PHOTOS BY CHARLOTTE HALL PHOTO BY RENEE RUSHDY
“the payof for this activity is so long and drawn out that you really don’t feel fully accomplished until the very end of the season.”
“I know that drumline is like a place where I go to see my friends that I go to create something whether it be friendships or music. but it’s all stuf that I really enjoy at the end of the day and that’s what really keeps me coming back.”
- Gabe Hernandez, marimba player
14 COVER

To summarize, drumline is a group of people brought together by their talent and their love for music.

Who are the masterminds behind Eden Prairie’s success? “Some Assembly Required” was created by Jared Olson, Eden Prairie’s Drumline director, along with, Zach Fitzgibbon and Mack Steinberg.

Jared Olson comes from a very musical background, he grew up surrounded by musicians. In high school, he was a member of his high school’s marching band and drumline. A er high school, he continued his musical career with Drum and Bugle Corps in Madison, Wisconsin. A er moving to Minnesota, he played for an independent drumline, Minnesota Brass Indoor.

roughout his time at EP, Olson has worked with many other marching band, colorguard, and drumline directors. Olson started working for Eden Prairie in 2014 and took over in 2018 as drumline director.

Other than a great sense of community, Drumline provides a space for percussionists to thrive, as the focus is all on them. If you are interested in growing as both a musician and a person defnitely audition for the 2023-2024 year. Auditions for snare drum, tenor drum, bass drum, mallet percussion, auxiliary percussion, or piano. Auditions are open to incoming 8th-12th graders.

Rating: 6/10- Katie, 7/10- Brooke.

Highlight: Not what I was expecting, but very nice vocals.

“Let the Light In” (featuring Father John Misty)

Rating: 10/10- Katie & Brooke.

Hightlight: e lyrics & overall message are beautiful.

“Peppers” (featuring Tommy Genesis)

Rating: 5/10- Katie, 6/10- Brooke.

Highlight: Cool beat but not my cup of tea! (- Katie) But probably the most upbeat song on the album.

“Taco Truck x VB”

Rating: 10/10- Katie & Brooke.

Highlight: Super calming; another great transition. A good ending to the album.

The Hunger Games Renaissance

15 years ago, Suzanne Collins made remarkable commentary on American society with her novel, The Hunger Games. For those who are unfamiliar with the story, Collins follows the life of Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year old girl, in a dystopian America. She brilliantly creates a not-so-fctional world, develops a multitude of characters, and creates complex character relationships, making her story addictive. But why is there a ‘Hunger Games Renaissance’ (as TikTok has deemed it) over a decade after the publication of the frst book?

Through her trio of books––The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay––Collins creates a world that efortlessly draws readers in. As mentioned previously, Collins writes the story of Katniss Everdeen who lives in Panem. Each year, the tyrannical Capitol holds “The Hunger Games” in which a male and female tribute, ages 12-18, from each of Panem’s 12 districts is reaped. The tributes must fght until only one remains. With each reread and re-watch, fans are able to fnd new hidden meanings, which is one reason why I believe this series is resurging. Additionally, as time progresses, Collins’ dystopian world appears to become more similar to the America we are living in. The importance of every name in the story, endless theories, and, of course, a classic love triangle allow a wide variety of people to fnd the story entertaining.

Many theories have been thought of and heavily debated within The Hunger Games fandom. Some theories, like Prim’s potentially rigged reaping, are extremely controversial. Smaller theories, like how Foxface (a tribute from the frst book) purposefully killed herself are still heavily debated within the fandom. When fans think of new, creative theories and post about it online, it helps the series continue to resurge. This also allows for more people to gain interest in the series because of diferent accounts on social media, like @luckyleftie on TikTok. Superfans opening up dialogue to theories creates a space for a community to come together. Oftentimes it is a great way for fans to escape real societal issues and pour their energy into dystopian issues. Because of this, the series is able to retain popularity.

Another (and maybe more shallow) reason

The Hunger Games renaissance seems to be occurring is the notorious love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale. There are endless debates on who Katniss should have ended up with, as there is with any love triangle (although Peeta is, and has always been, the correct answer). There are endless amounts of TikTok fan edits of Gale and Peeta, where comment sections are full of debates over who was the better partner for Katniss. However, there is so much more to each character than just who is better looking. Peeta is seen as a sweet, selfess boy with an undying love for

Katniss, while Gale is her lifelong best friend who would also do anything for her and her family. However, both men have their faults. Gale’s dedication to the rebellion proves to be more important than his relationship with Katniss, while Peeta’s selfessness can sometimes be too overbearing for Katniss’ closed of personality. Some even say Peeta represents love while Gale represents war. Whether fans want to talk about who they fnd more attractive or if they want to dissect what each character represents, this love triangle allows new and old fans alike to have an open dialogue.

This series is arguably one of the most infuential that has been released recently. Collins’ inspiration was drawn from switching between watching the news and a reality show, and she combined the two perfectly. The Hunger Games is incredibly dense, and it teaches fans to look at more than what frst meets the eye. The endless layers of the series allows for the story to stay relevant and entertaining. Overall, the books and movies are extremely well done and will continue to draw people in, especially with the help of social media.

Met Gala Review

The frst Monday in May might not hold signifcance to everyone, but to those who are fashion or celebrity obsessed, it is the biggest day of the year. This special Monday is when the Met Gala occurs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Founded in 1948 by Eleanor Lambert, it is the biggest day in fashion. Paparazzi and fans countdown the days until they can see their favorite celebrities and designers hit the Met carpet.

Each year, a list of guests, a theme, and the co-chairs are decided upon for the Met Gala. Anna Wintour, the current editor in chief of Vogue, is the mastermind behind the highly exclusive guest list. Wintour has also been a chairwoman of the Met Gala since 1995.

Some iconic and controversial themes have been ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ (2019), ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ (2021), ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ (2018), ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ (2015), and ‘Christian Dior’ (1996) where Princess Diana famously made an appearance.

This year’s theme is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty. The theme honors Karl Lagerfeld, an icon in the fashion world. His contributions to Chanel and Fendi are only two of the notable achievements from his career. It will be co-chaired by Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and, of course, Anna Wintour.

Each year, there are conversations of the best and worst dressed of the Met Gala. Sometimes there is a clear design that stands out as the best, and other times it seems like everyone missed the mark. Here are my opinions on the outfts of the 2023 Met Gala:

Best - Doja Cat

Because Karl Lagerfeld was known for loving his cat, Choupette, it was expected to see some cats hit the carpet. Doja Cat seemlessly and elegantly executed an ode to Karl and Choupette. Her makeup was fawless and her dress ft her perfectly.

Worst - Usher

Although Lagerfeld’s personal style tended to include a lot black and diferent shades of gray, he still played around with diferent silhouettes. Usher did not do anything new or innovative with this look. Black suits are acceptable for many events, however men showing up to the Met Gala wearing the same, boring black suit is not acceptable. The Met Gala is meant to explore fashion and make a statement, something that a plain, black suit cannot accomplish.

20 ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
PHOTOS VIA GETTY IMAGES

Karl Lagerfeld was well known for designing for Chanel. Anok Yai drew inspiration from the Chanel spring 1988 collection, and she looked stunning. The unique shape of the dress along with the gorgeous colors complimented her so well. Her glowing skin was eye catching and enhanced the whole look. She defnitely stood out from everyone else.

Anne Hathaway efortlessly honored Lagerfeld with this look. He famously made tweed an intrical part of Chanel’s brand, so it was very on theme for Hathaway to show up in a tweed dress. The cut-outs and safety pins, along with her hair and jewelry really tie this look together. This is the best Met Gala look this year.

Although Karlie Kloss took inspiration directly from a dress Lagerfeld designed, her take on it fell short. The dress fts her well, however it looks cheap. The pearls over the gold print on the dress are confusing and displeasing to the eye. This is defnitely not her worst look at the Meet Gala, but it fell short.

With Karl Lagerfeld being so controversial, many designers and celebrities still paid tribute to him this year. As per usual, some looks exceeded expectations while many fell short. Some honorable mentions for best dressed include Dua Lipa and A$AP Rocky. More worst dressed include Kim Kardashian and Olivia Wilde.

Overall, fashion is art and art does not speak to everyone. Some of my opinions may be controversial, but at the end of the day there is no harm in disecting the Met Gala.

The Best and Worst of Glee

Glee, which aired from 2009-2015, covered hundreds of songs. Throughout 6 seasons, many covers became just as iconic, if not more iconic, than the original songs. Some covers, of course, fell short as the cast was not able to match every artist’s unique touch. Although controversial, some Glee covers are better than the original songs. Here are our opinions on covers that are better, equally as good, and worse than the original:

Better than the original

Rumour Has It / Someone Like You - The Treble Tones

Originally sung by Adele

The emotion in this performance is absolutely unmatched. Amber Riley and Naya Rivera complement each other exceptionally well in this mashup. This mashup is used to cover a very serious topic of being betrayed and outed, which enhances the emotion of the two.

Somewhere Only We Know - Blaine Anderson

Originally sung by Keane

Darren Criss’ emotional performance of this song really brings it to another level. The original version is missing some of the strength that can only be achieved by Criss’ voice. His loveable character and the heartwarming story being told really helps bring this cover to another level.

22 ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Equally as good

My Man - Rachel Berry

Originally sung by Barbra Streisand

To say Lea Michelle’s cover of “My Man” is better than Barbra Streisand’s version would be an insult. However, Michelle’s powerful vocals and tear-jerking performance allow this cover to be considered iconic. Both Michelle and Streisand add their own unique style to the song making both versions equally as great!

Valerie - Santana Lopez

Originally sung by Amy Winehouse

This performance is so electrifying. Naya Rivera adds her own unique touch to this cover making it exciting to listen to. It is one of Glee’s most well-known covers, and deservedly so. However, Amy Winehouse’s original is iconic. Both songs are equally sensational!

Worse than the original

Live While Weʼre Young - Glee Cast

Originally sung by One Direction

The Glee Cast’s attempt to present themselves as a boy band, unfortunately, failed in this cover. The performance sounds cheesy, and they tried too hard to match One Direction’s sound instead of making it their own. Many pop songs covered in Glee are incredible, but this one missed the mark.

Mean - Puck and Coach Beiste

Originally sung by Taylor Swift

Although the original is great, Mark Salling and Dot-Marie Jone’s voices don’t work well together for this song. There were defnitely better choices for this scene.

Douze Points: An Introduction to the Eurovision Song Contest

Imagine if American Idol and the Olympics had a European child, featured original songs, and somehow was even more glittery and chaotic. That’s the simplest way I can describe the Eurovision Song Contest. You may have watched the Netfix movie about it, and trust me when I say that it’s just as insane as that flm makes it sound. Taking place in a diferent city for a week each year, it’s a musical spectacle for all ages, no matter what continent you’re on.

A brief overview of what it’s all about. Most European countries–along with Israel and Australia, don’t even question it–select an original song and a performer. These songs are released throughout the winter. In May, everyone gathers in the host city (this year, it’s Liverpool, England) to perform their songs. 2 semi-fnals are held on a Tuesday and a Thursday, respectively, where the top 10 of each join 6 automatic qualifers to compete for the microphone trophy in the fnal Saturday show. After everyone performs, a group of jurors vote for their favorites, along with the European public. Whoever gets the most points total wins. You’ve likely heard of a few former winners: ABBA, Céline Dion, and Måneskin have all won.

While the songs are good, ranging from unique folk to polished pop to memorable camp, where the contest really shines are the stage performances in May. Everyone brings their A-game in outfts, stage props, and choreography. For instance, in 2022, Spain’s sensual dance-pop number featured one of the best dance routines in the contest’s history, while Serbia’s avant-garde piece on healthcare captivated audiences across the continent. Other standouts were the UK’s classic rock song and Sweden’s breakup ballad. The big winner was Ukraine, which efortlessly blends rap with Ukrainian folk music. The show has become a worldwide sensation, garnering over 161 million viewers in 2022.

An exciting change has been introduced for the upcoming 2023 contest: Americans are now able to vote! Counted under the “Rest of the World” vote, you can pay roughly $1.08 (0.99 euros) per vote.

Eurovision is the perfect way to spend a boring Saturday afternoon. It’s crazy, colorful, and so much fun, not to mention a great way to fnd new music. I highly recommend tuning in!

Want to watch? Hereʼs how:

Tune into the grand final on May 13th @ 2 PM!

Due to broadcast rights disputes, the show is geoblocked on YouTube in the U.S., nor does it air on cable TV. So if you want to watch, there’s 3 primary options:

Swedish broadcaster SVT does not geoblock their contest livestream. To watch, go to svtplay.se at 2:00 pm on contest days and click on the appropriate stream.

Download a VPN and connect to a European server. This will allow you to watch the YouTube livestream.

If you have Peacock Premium, there will be a livestream of the grand fnal you can watch, featuring commentary from former fgure skater Johnny Weir.

An (Abridged) Song Preview

Looking to get a head start on listening to the 2023 songs? Look no further! I present to you a mix of possible winner contenders, genuine favorites of mine, and musical extravaganzas alike. For even more songs, the full playlist is available on Spotify.

Sweden

The favorite to win. Partially due to the singer’s status as a former Eurovision winner, partially due to its breathtaking performance at the Swedish national fnal, and partially because it’s a great pop song. Check out the performance on YouTube!

Where do I even begin with this one? It’s an eclectic blend of metal, rap, and dance-pop, and somehow it all works together to create an insane party anthem. It’s also in Finnish, only adding to its charm. This is the current runner-up favorite to win, and will almost certainly do amazing in the public vote.

France is especially good at showcasing their music scene to the continent. This one combines a dramatic “chanson”-style ballad with a disco beat, and can best be described as an “Edith Piaf disco remix”. A potential dark horse that could do exceptionally well.

A catchy Romanian bop inspired by Moldovan folklore. I personally think this one is being overlooked and could be a potential dark horse in Liverpool, especially given Moldova’s rather surprising history of providing amazing shows. This is one to watch out for.

After their success last year, Spain has decided to try something diferent. This year, they’re sending a ballad heavily rooted in a famenco style. This one also had an outstanding national fnal performance. Could be one to watch out for.

This one is for the indie fans. A catchy yet mellow indierock song in Slovenian. It also has a lovely and energetic live show, thanks to its charismatic performers. What’s there not to like?

A bold and uplifting pop song about female empowerment. You may have heard this one on TikTok, where it accidentally went viral prior to winning the Norwegian national fnal. I’d be very surprised if it performed poorly.

This is the bop you never knew you needed. A catchy, retro pop song about the struggles of being a songwriter, name-dropping Edgar Allan Poe to emphasize their point. Peak Eurovision. This is bound to earn big points from the public vote.

Boygenius, an indie rock band that consists of Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers, has released a new album after their 5 year long hiatus since their debut EP, ‘boygenius’. The album orbits around the importance and feelings of friendship and loss. It’s a mix of Baker’s impulse decisions and care, Dacus’ questions and realizations, and Bridgers’ thoughtful connections and melancholic melodies. Together, they create more than a “side-project” or a “supergroup”; they are boygenius.

Without You Without Them $20

You’re sitting on a quilted, foral couch in an antique, dusty home. Built in the 1950’s, all of the foors creak and there are surmounts of hardened candy foating around the home. A fre is roaring below the shortwave retro radio that is playing this track. It’s around dusk, and the neighborhood has begun to quiet and settle. So make yourself comfortable and prepare for the emotional roller-coaster ‘the record’ provides.

Key Lyric: “I want to hear your story and be a part of it”

Emily I’m Sorry [E]

We’re immediately met with a cool guitar and spacial-like atmosphere. Allegedly about Emily Bannon, Phoebe delves more into the theme of regret and reminiscing of calmer experiences that are shaping who she is now.

Key Lyric: “I’m 27 and I don’t know who I am, but I know what I want.”

Cool About It

So far one of the most popular songs on the album, and for good reason. If you’re searching for gut-wrenching acoustic, look no further.

A song about loving someone while knowing the pain they are going through, but not being able to do anything about it. Even going so far as pretending that everything is okay in hopes that method acting will change reality.

Key Lyric: “But we don’t have to talk about it, I can walk you home and practice method acting.”

Who just turned the volume up?! Compared to the last track, $20 is a far leap from the smooth, radio-like melody of Without You Without Them. Starting of strong with “Its a bad idea”, we get a pretty good hint of the vibe of the song. Have you ever done something you knew you shouldn’t have done? $20 is fast and strong about reminiscing on those kinds of adrenaline pumping experiences.

Key Lyric: “In another life, we were arsonists”

True Blue [E]

The beat picks up once again, bursting with a sense of hopefulness and love for companionship. It’s well known that the trio–Phoebe, Julien, and Lucy– are very close, and this track is about that: fnding your people. A very high-school-coded song, in my opinion, because we are all trying to fnd our people.

Key Lyric: “I remember who I am when I’m with you, your love is tough, your love is tried and true blue”

Not Strong Enough

Google: “song that sounds really happy but is actually too real and heartbreaking (boygenius)”, and Not Strong Enough will appear! At frst listen, this song is quick and exciting with acoustic chords mixed with electronic beats. But as soon as you start paying attention to the lyrics, you get a glimpse of what the song is actually about. Recently, Boygenius did an interview with Genius explaining the song. In summary, this song is about the fear of not being enough for anyone both in worth (also referencing the diference of treatment between women and men) and in efort.

Key Lyrics: “I don’t know why I am the way I am, there’s something in the static, I’ve been having revelations”

“Always an angel, never a god.”

Phoebe, Lucy, and Julien © Harrison Whitford

Revolution 0 [E]

Revolution 0 is one of Phoebe’s songs which delves into her battle with mental health. In my opinion, the song is perfectly summed up in these lines, “I don’t want to die, That’s a lie, But I’m afraid to get sick, I don’t know what that is.”

She’s said in past interviews that she is more scared of getting sick than dying, which is oddly contradictory yet understandable.

I think with the wrapping up of this school year we can all relate to these lyrics, “Wish I wasn’t so tired, But I’m tired.” But wait for the ending. No, seriously, wait for the ending. Everyones vocals come rushing in with a beautiful orchestral swell wraps up this relaxed song wonderfully.

Satanist

Hand in hand with $20, Satanist is an upbeat and scream worthy song. With the coming weather of summer this is perfect for having the volume up with your windows down. Satanist encapsulates the boundless feeling of solely living in the moment instead of worrying about the future.

Key Lyric: “Will you be a satanist with me? Mortgage of your soul to buy your dream”

Anti-Curse

The second to last track on the record continues to play on the theme of living your life as it’s the only one you have. Surprise, it is! Outside of this little bubble we live in–school, work, friends, etc–there is a whole world waiting for us. Let’s keep living life to the fullest this very moment, shall we?

Key Lyrics: “Making peace with my inevitable death” “There we were, Was anyone ever so young?

Leonard Cohen

A short and sweet solo song sung by Lucy. The lyrics heavily reference a story they told to Rolling Stone the day the album was released;

During a long drive, Phoebe wanted Julien and Lucy to listen to a 10 minute song, Trapeze Swinger by Iron and Wine. No one interrupted during the song, sensing how intent she was on them listening to the story about a dead person telling the living how they want to be remembered. But because they didn’t interrupt, she missed their exit, adding another hour onto the drive. Leonard Cohen is a quick and comfortable song about unconditional companionship.

We’re In Love

Like the title suggests, this is a very, very melancholic love song. Raw and vulnerable, this track is vocally led by Lucy accompanied by a quiet and isolated piano. It portrays the person she is singing about, and perhaps the person you’re thinking of, in incredible detail. Not only that, but also memories and specifc experiences made and bound with said person.

The lyrics and slow melody encapsulate the many traits that love carries; the hope, the hurt, and the worth.

Key Lyrics: “Will you still love me if it turns out I’m insane? I know what you’ll say, but it helps to hear you say it anyway.” “If you rewrite your life, may I still play a part.”

Letter To An Old Poet

If you’re familiar with boygenius and their debut album, boygenius, you will defnitely recognize the melody of this song. Personally one of my favorites of the album, the transferred melody from ‘Me & My Dog’ but a change in lyrics was jaw-dropping. Upon frst reading the title, my mind jumped to the short collection of letters between poet Rainer Maria Rilke and Franz Xaver Kappus, a young cadet who is debating between pursuing a career in militia or becoming a poet. The title of this collection of letters, published by Kappus in his later years? Letters to a young poet.

Is this song and the collection of letters connected? I’m not sure. What I do know is that both are looking for a bright and fulflling future; something that the record embodies beautifully.

Key Lyrics: “But I’m better than you and you should know that by now”

“And remember my dog when I see the full moon”

KDRAMAS:

Ever scrolled through tiktok and landed on an edit of some popular Korean Drama? If not, I feel sorry for you. The day I watched my frst drama was an awakening for me. The American shows I had already consumed could not compare to the 16 episode romance of any kdrama. If you don’t already watch kdramas, let this be your reason to start. The selection pool is large, but don’t let that intimidate you. Below I’ve listed good starter shows in six genres that you can choose from to start your journey:

Lighthearted Romance

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo

Where you can watch: Viki

This is one of my all-time favorite romances. It follows weightlifter Kim Bok-joo and swimmer Jung Joon-hyung and their journey with love, friendship, and family. It includes sub-plots that will warm your heart and help you understand every character. The show does a great job of addressing topics like depression and body image issues. It’s also hilarious and very exaggerated. It’ll make you cringe and swoon at the same time. If you want a friends-to-lovers, slow-burn college romance then I highly recommend you give this a try.

Family & Friendship

Reply 1988

Where you can watch: Netfix, Amazon Prime, Viki, Tubi

Set in the 80s, Reply 1988 centers around a group of best friends navigating their lives in Seoul, South Korea. Growing up in a close-knit community, the show highlights each families day-to-day struggles and successes in an ever-changing society. The character development fts perfect with the show’s 16-episode season. Reply 1988 is an excellent choice if you want a comfort show that is both hilarious and heartwarming.

Fantasy

Alchemy of Souls

Where you can watch: Netfix

The romance in this show should be banned because of how criminally amazing it is. It follows famous, soul-shiftng assassin Nak-su and outcast noble Jank Uk as their bumpy encounter leads them to work together to change each other’s destiny. A mentor-mentee relationship develops as they combat the danger that surrounds their day-to-day lives. This show has aspects of mystery, humour, love, family, and friendship + a lot of magic and duels. You won’t just fall in love with the leads, but the side characters, too. Let’s just say you are bombarded with romance and angst from every relationship. The editing for this show is also high-quality for a fantasy. It starts a little slow, with a 20-epsiode frst season and 10-episode second season, but you’ll get into it. I highly recommend this show if you want a good soulmate romance with a little bit of magic.

A Beginner’s Guide

Historical

Mr. Queen

Where you can watch: Netfix, Hulu, Viki

This is my favorite show. Of. All. Time. Nothing compares. It follows chef Jang Bong-hwan as he accidentally travels back in time and swaps bodies with a soon-to-be queen in the Joseon era. Now on a mission to get back to the future, Bong-hwan must also learn to navigate his new life as a woman in the royal court. His task is harder than it seems when engaged to a king with secrets and a court full of lies. The best parts of this drama are its timely humor, eccentric main leads, and unexpected romance. If you are looking for a playful historical romance that’s never been done before, I highly recommend you give this a watch.

Psychological

Flower of Evil

Where you can watch: Netfix, Amazon Prime, Viki

This show altered my brain chemistry. It follows detective Cha Ji-won and her husband Baek Heesung as they navigate their life during an ongoing murder investigation in their community. The romance is top-tier and the plot is thrilling. You never know what’s going to happen or how the characters will react to whats going on. The show leaves you on the edge of your seat until the last minute. Warning: you will cry. I highly recommend this show if you want a good murder-mystery romance.

Revenge

The Glory

Where you can watch: Netfix

The Glory, one of Netfix’s most popular kdramas, follows school bullying victim Moon Dong-eun as she attempts to exact her revenge against her former classmates. Now a school teacher out for blood, nothing will get in the way of Dongeun’s plans. But love and friendship become speed bumps on her road to glory. This show may be triggering for victims of bullying and abuse, so tread with caution. It’s sad and full of angst, and the romance is to die for. I highly recommend this show if you like a good revenge plot.

Actually give her a chance

Taylor. Swift. Pop culture icon. Representative of the blonde hair, blue eyed stereotype. Currently on her ‘Eras’ tour. She’s so engraved in my brain that whenever I see one of those ‘Swift, Trucking and Transport’ trucks on the highway, with the big Swift on the side, I think of Taylor Swift. We all know her, of have at least heard of her some way or another. I mean, we’re in a Minnesotan suburb after all. Anyways, I’m taking up space on this page to talk about her because (surprise, surprise) I like her music. Both new and old, she has broken musical and lyrical barriers across the music industry.

It’s a common misconception that

all she writes is breakup songs. Even if this were true, doing so is completely valid in itself. I mean think about it, men commonly write and sing about relationships with women–whether their actions were healthy, manipulative, or just plain abusive–and that is deemed as “real” and “he gets me like no one else does” or even “he’s so strong”. So why does Taylor Swift have to be any diferent? Is it because people have painted her out to be “basic”? Is it because she’s calling out people who have done her wrong, no matter how big or small, by name? Does that scare you?

At the end of the day, what I love most about her is her story-telling. During quarantine she created a whole fctional

world, and the story was sung beautifully in two albums; folklore and evermore. Personally, those are my favorite albums of hers. She wonderfully weaves real life experiences into the lives of these characters. There’s love, loss, grief, resilience, and strength. The latter is something that I think we all could use help with every so often.

So next time you begin to judge anyone by misconceptions and rumors–whether that is here at the high school or with a global celebrity–take a step back, build up your strength, and form your own opinion or simply leave it be. There is absolutely no reason to judge and belittle someone or their interests.

Country music is over-hated

I love country music. Why you might ask? Because it’s awesome. However this school has a serious problem. No matter how much they like to talk about belonging and all that this school is chock full of COUNTRY MUSIC HATERS!

I have never, not once, had a teacher put on country music for work time. Is this a big deal? No, not really. But with the limited number of popular music genres in this country it is awfully strange that country music has never once been played across this school’s speakers. But where does this hatred of Country Music come from? That’s what I will be exploring with you all today.

Country music has its original roots in the ballads and folk songs of the Appalachians and the south. Since then it has evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry with hundreds of artists from all over the country and some even from

abroad.

Any country lover is aware that it is not safe to walk the halls of this school without hearing “Eww, you like COUNTRY?”. Why people feel the need to care, I will never know. But what I do know is that people’s hatred of country is pretty unfounded. Reasons I’ve heard for this dislike include twangy instruments, fake accents, being ‘too close’ to pop (which makes no sense because these people like pop), and a general dislike of the south and southern culture. Obviously I disagree with the above list. Country music is the only genre I see these days that consistently has an ACTUAL story. It’s relatable and down to earth. Another reason is it’s really great for dancing. Very rarely do I hear a country song that doesn’t make me want to dance. Having actual instruments is surprisingly

lacking in modern music and country is pretty much the only one I hear that has instruments aside from maybe rock music. And fashion wise, Coastal Cowgirl is trendy HARD this summer so if you plan on partaking I would suggest becoming a country stan so you don’t look like a poser. So now that I’ve convinced you to listen to country where should you start? Well I would defnitely recommend Morgan Wallen for newbies. He’s a pretty big country star right now and just released a large album. Kelsea Ballerini is becoming this generation’s Carrie Underwood so I would also recommend her music but I actually prefer Priscilla Block to Kelsea. Honestly though if you want to get into country music just through on a country station or fnd a current Spotify playlist. I’ve almost never heard a country song I dislike using this method so give it a try!

Let me sit where I want

Picture this: I, a harmless creature, sitting on a soft, red couch with a book in my hand enjoying my open hour. Light is shining from a large window that covers me head to toe and adds to the quiet scenery. Then, loud annoying heels clank in front

of me, and I am suddenly being ESCORTED to a crowded library with no sunlight and loud sounds of children chatting. This should be considered ABUSE. I go out of my way and take out my ID card to you rude hallway monitors just to confrm what I already know. Yet it doesn’t matter. My day is ruined. My reading interrupted. For what? I read. I do nothing wrong. Yet

I am being thrown out like trash. This is unacceptable. The school needs to open up more quiet spaces for people during their open hour and ALLOW students to stay in an area if they’re doing nothing wrong. Something needs to change. And if you think I’ll backdown and go sit in the library from now on, you are so far of. I will continue my rebellious ways until I am allowed my freedom.

We need to relearn concert etiquette

We all love concerts – we love dressing up, getting noticed by our favorite members, maybe even getting close to the stage, but when is there a limit? Is it fne to hold a gigantic sign that blocks everyone’s view simply to get noticed? Or is it okay to throw your phone on stage so Harry Styles can call your mom? The answer is there is one. Yet, concert etiquette has gone through a downfall since covid. And with huge artists like Harry Styles and Taylor swift touring again, people have to relearn how to act at concerts, because camping, throwing things on stage, and bringing big signs, is making the experience worse for you, others, and the musician.

In 2020, as covid hit its all-time high, tours were canceled, concerts rescheduled, and concerts postponed. However, although fans had a long break before going back to concerts, fans’ behavior have become far more severe and attempts to get noticed are far more drastic. For artists like Harry Styles and Taylor Swift, fans have

begun camping out weeks prior not just for the concert, but even to simply get merch. These fans’ actions have become normalized in other fanbases for smaller artists as well. For smaller venues, fans have begun camping out for barricades even in poor weather and unsafe cities. This isn’t only dangerous for the fans, but it’s also ruining the experience for fans who can’t camp out. For how concerts are today, it’s impossible for fans to get a good view without camping out.

However, camping is not the only issue at concerts, fans have also done everything possible to get close seats, including being rude to other fans. Fans have skipped people in lines, shoved their way to the front, and have even started fghts with others in line. This behavior happens before the concert even starts, and it worsens when the actual concert starts. Fans have been yelled at for holding signs and even simply standing up. This has created numerous questions about what’s proper behavior at concerts. Bringing anything

that can distract others or block others views should not be allowed, as it is taking away from others fun. However, people should also realize that fans paid to be there, whether it was $20 or $500, fans should be able to make the most out of the concert. People are meant to stand, dance, and sing at concerts, and if you want to sit down, you must understand that beforehand.

Behavior between fans isn’t the only thing that has changed, but also the way fans behave with the artist has become increasingly inappropriate and wrong. By throwing things on stage like phones and water, the artist is in constant danger of getting hit or slipping on items. Throwing safe items like fags and hats are fne as they can do harm, but items like phones, liquids, and even food (talking to the girl who threw a skittle at Harry Styles) is not okay for the safety of the performer. Instead of attempting to get noticed or get a photo, it’s okay to simply enjoy the concert.

What is an industry plant?

Industry plants. A word that is thrown around a lot in the entertainment industry. Particularly the music industry. Popular artists such as Billie Eilish, Khalid, Lizzo, Lil Nas X, Drake, and Olivia Rodrigo have all been referred to as an “industry plant.” But what is the true defnition of an industry plant? Essentially, it means an artist has connections in the industry, but they have been portraying their success as all their own.

Another artist commonly referred to as an “industry plant” is Clairo. After her success with her song “Pretty Girl”, Clairo signed with the label FADER. There was immediate backlash after it was discovered that, her father, Geof Cottrill, knew the co-founder of FADER, due to his connections in the music industry. Suddenly, she was no longer a lucky breakout star, but nothing more than an “industry plant”. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Cotrill said, “I signed with Fader because I’ve known Jon Cohen my whole life. There was a sense of accountability and protection.

I defnitely am not blind to the fact that things have been easier for me than other people’s experiences. It would be stupid of me to not acknowledge the privilege I had from the start…but I would be stupid to not use that relationship in a moment where I was really scared and really confused. I would be stupid to not want that guidance from somebody that my family trusts.” Clairo’s father is not the mastermind behind “Pretty Girl”. Geof Cotrill may have helped her fnd her footing in the industry, but he certainly did not fabricate Clairo’s “Pretty Girl” success.

Another artist on the rise is Gracie Abrams, who is opening for Taylor Swift at 30 diferent shows for her Eras Tour. Additionally, last year she opened for Olivia Rodrigo at Rodrigo’s Sour Tour 14 times. However, after this rise in popularity, her connections in the industry were soon spotlighted.

Gracie Abram’s father is JJ Abrams, the director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Gracie Abram acknowl-

edges how these connections look from the outside, but in an interview with Rolling Stone she explains, “Obviously we can’t control where we are born into… know how hard I work, and I know how separate I’ve kept [my parents] from every conversation about anything career-wise, but of course, you can understand what it looks like from the outside”.

Both artists acknowledge that they have had some help getting to where they are. However, that shouldn’t undermine how hard they’ve worked.

Synchro Team Spotlight

With synchronized swimming being in full swing this year we decided to sit down with one of it’s captains Richa Advani to get a deeper insight into the sport and the team here at EPHS.

Q: How would you describe synchronized swimming?

A: I originally joined because my Mom promised me that if I joined the spring sport that she would get me Spotify Premium and now as a captain, and looking back is probably the best decision I ever made for high school. Because I think there’s just something about being in a sport with such a good like, friendly and positive culture that Synchro has that really like I don’t know what afects your life and like such a positive way. And, you know, all the girls are always so excited to come back next year.

Q: What do you do at your practices?

A: So practices, how they usually go is so we get on deck, which is the area kind of just beside the pool, outside. We do a bit of stretching, just to make sure nobody pulls anything or gets cramps in the water, which happens fairly often. And then we get in the pool and we do our warm up to just like swimming around practicing some skills. And then we move into routines. Which kind of depends on the day. So we start at the beginning of the season with fgures and then transition more to only doing routines.

Q: What are your hopes for this season?

A: I have two things, I have a solo and a duet, and I’m hoping one of those could make it to state. And I’m just hoping that the rest of the team doesn’t put too much pressure on themselves and improves a lot which I think they are.

Q: What would you say to someone who’s interested in joining next year?

A: They defnitely should. It’s an amazing team. All the girls are so funny and smart and welcoming and helpful. So you’ll never feel alone on the team. Since routines are like with multiple people, it’s not a very individual sport in that sense. So you’re always going to feel like you’re with your team.

Q: Are there any common misconceptions people have about synchronized swimming?

A: Sometimes people think it’s not, like difcult, or like it’s not as hard as it really is. Not to scare people of. I think any sport takes a lot of efort. But sometimes people will be like, “Oh, synchronized swimming, like whatever. You’re a swimmer who likes a nerd sport” We have all kinds of people on our team from various diferent social groups. So nobody should feel like they’re gonna be ostracized on the team or they’re not gonna be welcomed because they’re from a certain set group or anything.

Q: What’s your favorite Synchro moment?

A: We’ve had a lot of good moments at pasta dinners. It’s where a lot of the team bonding happens. Specifcally, I think last year, we were having a pasta dinner. And everybody was just like, it was just this huge table and everybody was at it. So everyone’s just like laughing and telling stories. And just having the best time. I thought that was really fun.

Eden Prairie High School Girls Lacrosse

As of early May, the 2023 Girls’ Lacrosse team’s season is of to a great start! Currently, the team has 4 wins and 3 losses. The team has a mix of people - seniors, veterans, returners, and some younger players. The girls are about halfway through their season, and senior Kylie Bamlett says that it’s going well and that “we’re seeing a lot of the younger girls step up and we’re seeing the returners continue to do what they should be doing.” She says that one of the most important parts of being a senior and captain is making sure everyone is seen and heard and “constantly making sure that people are being included, especially the younger girls.” She strives to make the team feel like a family. Head coach Brooke Jones also agrees. She says that she’s seeing “a lot of growth. We’re seeing the girls being able to learn and improve.”

Last year, the girls placed second in the section tournament. By the end of this season, Kylie hopes to “leave a legacy behind and leave something people can remember. It doesn’t have to be the win/loss record but just the environment and our positivity is what matters to me.” Coach Jones wants to see “the team playing as a cohesive unit. We have what it takes for the state tournament.” The team has fve games left in their season before the section tournament, and we wish them the best of luck!

Girls Basketball Season Recap

“We all just wanted to win for each other.”

The Eden Prairie Girls’ Basketball team had a phenomenal season. They fnished the season with an overall record of 22-10 and were the champions of Section 2AAAA. Finally, they defeated Stillwater 69-54 and placed third in the state tournament. The team took the lead in halftime, with four players scoring in the double digits: senior Molly Lenz, senior Ashley Fritz, senior Annika Anderson, and sophomore Tori Schalgel. The Class 4A All-Tournament team also included two Eagles - Lenz and Anderson.

In an interview with Eden Prairie Local News, head coach Ellen Wiese said: “I think when all of us look back on this with some perspective, we’ll realize what an incredibly special year this was given the obstacles we had to overcome.” She also added that “it’s nothing short of incredible.” Sophomore guard Tori Schlagel also describes the season as incredible. When asked about the most memorable part of the season, she says that it was “probably the section fnals game. The atmosphere there was incredible and all the support from the community was really fun. The section fnal and the state games were incredible.” Tori also discussed the 2022 season and said that the buzzer-beater loss in the section fnals was “devastating.” This year, however, they had one of the best fnishes in school history. There were lots of contributors to the team’s success, but she says one of the big ones was the leadership of their seniors. She also said that “the seniors last year built a really good community within the program. We all just wanted to win for each other.”

The 2022-2023 Eden Prairie Girls Basketball team fought their way through injuries and losses to make history and achieve their third-place title at the MNHSL state tournament. Their 2023-2024 season starts this November, and the team will be captained by Vanessa Jordan, Tori Schlagel, and Abby Valiton. We can’t wait to see what the team accomplishes this season!
