About the Artist David Stoecklein launched his photographic career taking lifestyle shots of skiing, fishing, hiking, and biking, landing assignments for companies such as Coca-Cola, Ski Magazine, L.L. Bean, Reebok, Timberland, and Scientific Angler. It was not long, however, before he turned his lens to his neighbors on the great ranches of the West. He has spent the last 30 years documenting the culture as well as the people of the region. David’s fascination with the ranching heritage of the American West led him to befriend, and subsequently photograph, the men and women still breathing life into the mythical figure of the cowboy. David’s passion for preserving the traditions and beliefs of the country’s honest, hard-working cowboys and cowgirls gradually earned him their respect. With that respect came an open invitation to share in their lives, and the great responsibility to honor their trust. David’s personal mission soon led to more assignment photography for America’s greatest brands including Stetson-Roper USA, Grasshopper-Keds, Farnam, JanSport, Merial, Eddie Bauer, Nestlé, Platinum Performance, Ariat International, Chevrolet, Jeep, Daimler-Chrysler, Marlboro, Kodak, U.S. Tobacco, Ford, Budweiser, Remington, and others. His client list of today includes Dos Equis, Bayer Animal Health, Idaho Potato Council, Columbia Sportswear, Wrangler, Intervet, Agri Beef, Vogt Silversmiths, Ryan Michael, Roche Pharmaceuticals, Canon USA, Sony Pictures, Justin Boots, 20th Century Fox, United Artists, and more. David’s work has been featured in most of the great magazines around the world including publications such as: Western Horseman, Farm and Ranch, American Cowboy, National Geographic, Outdoor Life, Persimmon Hill, Time, Newsweek, LIFE, Cowboys & Indians, Working Ranch, Orvis, Outdoor Photographer, Digital Photographer, Big Sky Journal, and many more. Stoecklein Photography houses an extensive collection of stock photography encompassing both lifestyle and western images, David’s gallery in Ketchum, Idaho, features fine art prints and western memorabilia. Stoecklein Publishing has published over 50 coffee-table books of David’s photographic works as well as books for other western photographers and authors. Stoecklein Publishing produces an annual line of western calendars and datebooks as well as lithographs and fine art prints, notecards, and other products featuring David’s photography. David Stoecklein has been a member of the distinguished group of master photographers in Canon’s Explorers of Light program for 19 years. David has also been recognized by the editors of True West magazine as the “Best Living Photographer of the West.” The distinguished award is given each year as part of the magazine’s “Best of the West” issue. David has received this award five times. David Stoecklein resides in Idaho with his wife, Mary, and their three sons, Drew, Taylor, and Colby, where they split their time between their home in Sun Valley and their ranch in Mackay.

Down to the

Details The right saddle fit comes down to the right tree By Heather Smith Thomas

Tri-State Livestock News • Stallion Showcase

T

he foundation for any saddle is the saddletree. It is impossible to build a great saddle on a poorly fitting tree. Matt Miller, a custom saddletree and saddle maker in the Sheridan, Wyo., area says that when it comes to fitting horses correctly, the subject of saddletrees and their fit has often been turned into a sales ploy. “What I mean by that is, instead of making a tree/saddle to fit each horse, the properly designed tree is made to fit a body type. I can custom fit to a specific horse, but I don’t recommend doing this unless your horse is making you a lot of money. If I can shave off one-tenth of a second on a horse’s

Matt Miller

performance, that could be the difference of taking home the money or not,” he explains. “Many times I have gotten on a plane and flown to southern California, or elsewhere, custom fitted the tree, and returned home to build the saddle. By the time the customer pays for the ticket, expenses, and the saddle is finished, the price can be high. By contrast, if I correctly build a tree to a body type, you can ride many horses within that type and not hurt one horse. I say this based on experience. In 20 years, I have not had one tree come back for hurting a horse or anything else for that matter,” he says. Matt grew up on ranches in Nevada and Oregon, and has ridden for big outfits from Arizona to Montana. He has a realistic view of what a saddle can do when designed correctly – and what it will do to your horse when it’s incorrect. “When your tree and finished saddle is right, you would be surprised how many different horses you can ride hard and not hurt a single one.” He has been doing saddle fitting clinics all over the country for over 20 years and has decided the best way to learn about a product is to teach someone else about the subject. Matt started his saddle business in the early 1980s, and he has been building custom saddletrees since 1994. He comes from a family of saddle makers; combining his ranching background and saddle making seemed a natural choice.

PARTS OF THE SADDLETRE E Bars: The basic purpose of the tree is to distribute the rider’s weight over the largest area possible. “You want the least pounds per square inch of pressure with the bar pads in contact with the horses back. This also allows the rider to achieve the proper balance for the benefit of both the rider and the horse. The bars not only have the contours on the bottom to fit the horse, but also the notches on top to receive the fork and the cantle,” says Matt. “Even if the seat length is correct for the rider, that doesn’t mean that the rider will be balanced. The balance is achieved through the relationship between the stirrup leather notches and the cantle board,” he explains. Fork: The primary purpose of the Fork is to determine how far apart the bars are and at what angle. “To gain an accurate measure of this distance, you need to measure the gullet in the back of the fork and not the front. The front measure can change

Stallion Showcase • Tri-State Livestock News

9

considerably with different patterns and stock thickness. The height of the gullet in the back is more important than the front measure,” says Matt. Cantle: The cantle’s main purpose is to hold the distance and angle of the bars at the rear of the tree. “It is also very important for the seat length and proper surface bearing as determined by the conformation of the rider.” Bar Angle and Gullet Width: The cuts at the bottom of the fork and the cantle determine the bar angle and the gullet width. “The angle is laid out on the back of the fork. Let’s say you are trying to achieve a 90-degree bar angle. One side is laid out at 45 degrees, and the other side is the same. This gives you a total of 90 degrees or semi-quarter horse. If you want a 93-degree angle, or a full-quarter you add 1.5 degrees to both sides, or 46.5 degrees. The cantle must follow suit and match the fork,” he explains. What determines the bar angle is the skeleton of the horse. “Almost all mistakes in this determination are made from looking at the wrong part of the horse’s back. Most people look at the withers to try and determine bar angle. The lower lumbar part of the horse’s back will tell you bar angle. The withers determine gullet width. If your bar angle is off, it will almost always cause more problems for the horse in the lower back, rather than the withers and the shoulders.” The bottoms of the bars have key elements that need to be addressed for a proper fit. “The contours of the front and back bar pads, the stirrup leather notch’s shape and location, the position and amount of the rocker, and the flare and twist of the bar itself all have to be factored in when designing the proper bar,” says Matt.

CHECKING A TREE

COLTS FOR SALE AT ALL TIMES 10

Tri-State Livestock News • Stallion Showcase

“The tests every saddletree must go through to determine if it is worth building on are as follows: First, the tree must be square; the fork and cantle must be exactly parallel. Also, the bars must be parallel to each other. I have seen trees that will set flat on a stone, but they will be completely out of square,” he says. Next, when turned over on its top, the “horse side” of the bars must be exactly the same, but a mirror image

of one another. “The last thing that should be checked is the arch of the bar. Place the tree on its top and tilt it so that you can see the bottom spine or the edge of the tree bar from side to side. Follow the arch from the front to the back of the bar. If anything visibly breaks the arch, it is far enough out of line that you should not build on this tree.” The common practice of putting a bare tree on a horse’s back can be very misleading because if it fits at this stage it will not fit when completed. “If you require a lot from your saddle, the subtle differences become crucial: the shape of your horn, the height of the cantle, the rigging position, or how much freedom of movement in your stirrup leathers and fenders. It all starts in the tree,” says Matt.

T H E FIN IS H E D SAD D LE “We must be aware of the many changes in shape and size the tree will be subject to while the saddle is being built. A good example is the length of the seat. You will always lose at least a half inch of the seat length to the leather, and maybe more depending on the saddle maker. The shape and size of the horn will be very different from start to finish. Even the fit to your horse can be hindered by improperly blocking the skirts,” he explains. “The ability to achieve a low center of gravity, a deep seat, and the most comfort is through a combination of bar design and cantle shape. For example, if the top of the bars are built

PADS

Many people get confused about pads or blankets. “I tell folks to use the least amount of pads needed to properly fit the horse with that saddle. The material in the pad or blanket is also important. Do your homework on the different kinds of pads and their benefits. As far as thickness, think of them as a gasket. If you need to widen your gullet, use less padding. If you need to narrow the gullet, use more padding. DO NOT try to change the shape of the tree bars with a pad. It does not work.”

TREELESS SADDLES

Some well-meaning horse owners believe the best thing for a horse is a treeless saddle. “It is supposed to be comparable to riding bareback, but is not. You do not have a tree to distribute weight and the saddle does not allow you to position yourself as if you were riding bareback next to the shoulder. Instead, you are placed in the middle of the horse’s back without the benefit of the bars to spread out your body weight. If you want to emulate riding bareback, then ride bareback,” Matt says.

in the same way you want the ground seat made, the less thickness of leather is needed to make the finished seat.” “If you put one finger under the ground seat of your finished saddle where the skirts open up, and place a finger from your other hand on top, in the middle of that “sweet spot,” you can very accurately judge the distance. If it exceeds about a half inch, it is too much. I have seen many with a distance of one to one and a half inches,” says Matt. The most misunderstood principle of saddle functions is rigging placement. The saddletree itself dictates where the rigging should be placed on the finished saddle. “If it does not correctly align with the rocker and stirrup leather notch the saddle will not function as well. It won’t achieve proper weight placement of the rider or keep the saddle in place on the horse’s back.” F To get in touch with Matt Miller or ask questions about saddletrees, he can be reached by mail at P.O. NFR

SPOTLIGHT

The National Finals Rodeo, known popularly as the “Super Bowl of rodeo,” is a fan-favorite show of skill. Established in 1958 to determine the PRCA world champion in: calf roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, team roping, steer roping and now barrel racing (WPRA), the rodeo showcases not only the talents of the top 15 money-winners in each event but also the high-performing athletic horses who often serve as their partners. The NFR has called Las Vegas home since 1985, but since the first NFR in 1959, it is has also been held in Dallas, Los Angeles and Oklahoma City. In 2001, Wrangler became the title sponsor, which is why it’s often referred to as the WNFR. Tri-State Livestock News wishes all NFR contestants the best of luck at the 2013 National Finals Rodeo. BAREBACKS

Ty Breuer Age: 23 Hometown/background/family: I grew up 28 miles southwest of Mandan, North Dakota, on a ranch. My parents are Ed and Penny. Dad ranches and Mom is a teacher in Bismarck. I have a brother Casey, 21, he rides bareback horses also and we have started traveling together. I also have a sister Alyssa who is 18 and attending Dickinson State College. Do you or did you compete in college rodeo? If so, for what school? Central Wyoming College in Riverton with Rick Smith. I won the National College Finals in 2010. Rodeo Event: Bareback Riding How many times have you competed at the NFR? This is my first year.

Favorite bareback horse: There are lots of good horses out there, but so far my favorite has been Show Stomper because I got a 91 on that one. Favorite aspect of rodeo: Winning and getting to meet great people. Best rodeo memory: Winning the Cody Stampede this summer with a 91 on Show Stomper. Role models/mentors: My dad and uncle Dean got me started and Wayne Herman has helped me out. What do you like to do to relax or have fun when you’re not competing? Hunt and snowmobile. What do you do other than rodeo? I ranch with my family.

Advice you’ve received that’s been helpful: Keep your head up and buy good equipment. Advice you would give someone starting out in rodeo: Buy good equipment and find someone who knows what they are doing to help you. Favorite restaurants: Cattlemen’s Club in Pierre and Montana Mikes. Favorite home-cooked meal: Marinated steaks and grilled potatoes, onions and carrots. F

Hometown/background/family: I am originally from Circle, Mont., (I was a Schillinger) and was transplanted into Oelrichs, S.D., when I married my husband Grady. We’ve got three kids: Alyssa, 16, Thane, 13, and Cade, 10. I met my husband at a rodeo in Canada in 1993. My husband and children compete in rodeo also. Did you compete in college rodeo? If so, for what school? Yes, Montana State University, in barrels, breakaway and goat tying. Rodeo Event: Barrel Racing. But I roped in the amateurs a few years ago and it was fun.

How many times have you competed at the NFR? This will be the seventh consecutive year. I’ve had the privilege of hauling four different horses in that amount of time. Tell us about your horses: The two horses I’m currently hauling are Chisum and Louie. Louie probably gets more of the limelight because I have been riding him at the NFR – more people are definitely familiar with him. But Chisum is important too. I won more this summer on Chisum than Louie because Louie was hurt, but he should be healed and ready to go by NFR time. Louie has been to every NFR with me.

When I was training him (Chisum), I put my daughter Alyssa on him, they were both 6. You learn to appreciate each one for what they are. Chisum is now 15. He’s just a laid back guy. On the same token he’s like a caged lion when you point him to the arena, he does his job.

Chisum stepped up to the plate this summer, I could not have done it without him. I admire the personality each horse has to offer – Louie and Chisum are very different in this manner.

Then there has been Louie who’s always been very feisty. When I got him he was 4, he’d wait in the pasture every morning for us to drive the kids to the school bus and race us like a dog as we drove past!

NFR SPOTLIGHT

STEER WRESTLING

Jason Miller Age: 39 Hometown: Lance Creek, Wyo. – I have lived here my whole life! Did you compete in college rodeo? Two years at Central Wyoming College, Riverton, Wyo., three years at the University of Wyoming in Laramie where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in history. Rodeo Event: In high school I competed in every event. In college I was in steer wrestling, saddle bronc and team roping and now I compete in steer wrestling at PRCA rodeos. How many times have you competed at the NFR? I have competed at the NFR five times. Tell us about your horse: Porky is an 11-year-old gelding I bought from Brian Fulton in 2009. Gabe Ledoux

rode him in the NFR last year and so did Billy Bugenig in rounds 9 and 10, after his horse went lame. He was my number one horse this year – I rode him at approximately 60 out of 67 rodeos. Favorite aspect of rodeo: The friends I’ve made along the way. Best rodeo memory: My first world championship. Role models/mentors: Ote Berry and Cody Ohl. What do you like to do to relax or have fun when you’re not competing? I come back to the ranch every chance I get. I like riding horses and I enjoy history and reading. What do you do other than rodeo? I’m a rancher.

Advice you’ve received that’s been helpful: Do the best you can on the steer you have. Think about what you did wrong, concentrate on what you did right. Advice you would give someone starting out in rodeo: Rodeo is a job, not a hobby. You will get out of it what you put into it. Favorite restaurant: Three Sisters in Manville, Wyo. Favorite home-cooked meal: Steak and potatoes. F Stallion Showcase • Tri-State Livestock News

growing number of veterinarians are using non-traditional and complementary techniques in treating animals, often combining these treatments with traditional western medicine. One of the most useful complementary modalities is acupuncture. Dr. Tia Nelson, a veterinarian/farrier in Helena, Mont., has been using acupuncture for more than a dozen years in her practice, often in conjunction with chiropractic care.

“When using acupuncture for treatment, we always do diagnostics first. We ideally have a working diagnosis before we treat anything – whether we will be treating with holistic, integrated or traditional western medicine,” she says. Horses in athletic performance careers are often injured or get sore, just from the work they do.

24

Tri-State Livestock News • Stallion Showcase

One of the most common ailments in performance horses is lower back pain. “This responds nicely to acupuncture, just as it does in humans. If I am working up a patient that is just short-striding or ‘off’ rather than lame, I often use acupuncture. The horse may be resisting certain movements or not wanting to go into a specific turn, if it’s a barrel horse or reining

horse.” The horse is not comfortable doing its job and can’t be at the top of its game competitively. “We make sure it’s not a foot issue. I may do nerve blocks and other methods for diagnosis, since frequently back pain is foot-related,” she explains. The sore back may be secondary to a foot/ leg problem because the horse is using its body differently, with

more strain on certain parts of the back. “The acupuncture can also be useful, along with general diagnostics, to help determine where the horse is sore,” says Nelson. Many performance problems are associated with foot pain, and in these instances she always treats the horse by getting it shod correctly. “Addressing these issues successfully is often accomplished with a combination of methods. I address lower back issues very commonly with a combination of acupuncture and chiropractic. Usually I do my chiropractic assessment, but before I do any adjustments I put some needles into certain points to loosen things up. This makes the chiropractic adjustments quicker and much more effective.” It makes it easier on

the horse and easier for the person doing the manipulations. “I’ve had some people ask me to do acupuncture on a horse we’ve diagnosed with heel pain, and I won’t do acupuncture without also doing effective treatments for heel pain. I don’t know which is helping and it may be that the combination is helping. I know that I can get the horse better with proper hoof care, but the acupuncture can help ease the pain in the meantime.” It may take time to get some hoof problems resolved. The same is true with joint problems. Sometimes those can be addressed better using acupuncture and chiropractic manipulations. Rather than inject the hock, it may work better to change the shoeing, adjust the

horse, do some acupuncture, and then reassess the problem after the horse has time to heal. “But most of the pain I deal with in the horses I treat with acupuncture is low back pain. A western performance horse, working off the hind legs, can easily injure or strain the back, as can a dressage horse, hunter-jumper or any of the athletes that put their backs at risk,” she says. “Acupuncture can be done in many different ways. We can use needles, lasers, or pressure with fingertips,” she says. It’s a controversial modality because it doesn’t fit readily into the science of western medicine where studies are done with treated animals versus a control group, or with some animals being given a treatment and Stallion Showcase • Tri-State Livestock News

Introduction to the Benefits of Acupuncture “My personal first experience with acupuncture was when I fractured the radius cap in my elbow,” says Nelson. “It was terribly painful for about 8 weeks. I was taking pain medication, but it wasn’t stopping the pain and I couldn’t work because it hurt so much. A friend of mine suggested acupuncture but I didn’t want to pay somebody money to stick needles in me. My friend told me that he thought a person’s mind is like a parachute; it works better when it’s open. He said, ‘Here’s the deal. I’ll make the appointment; you go, and if it doesn’t work I’ll pay for it.’ So I went, and it was an hour and half appointment. About 20 minutes into it, the pain in my elbow was gone, and it never came back,” she says. “This was pain that wouldn’t respond to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or muscle relaxants. Before the acupuncturist got done with me the pain was completely gone. That’s when I decided to learn more about it,” says Nelson.

others a placebo – doing comparisons to see if a certain treatment really works. It’s hard to quantify or measure the effectiveness of acupuncture with traditional scientific methods, using trials and study models. “Therefore, some people are hesitant to use any treatment that can’t be proven with a placebo/control double-blinded study,” she says. Another reason there are very few studies done on acupuncture is that most medical studies are funded by major drug companies, and there is no money to be made by studying acupuncture, according to Nelson. “I’ve had some horses respond to acupuncture, however, when nothing else worked, and those horses are doing well. I also use it on some horses regularly. I see these horses once a month and work on anything that needs to be adjusted with chiropractics or do acupuncture once a month on a maintenance program,” says Nelson. “Some horses have issues with arthritis that we treat as needed. But we also do joint injections and use bute or whatever medication might be useful – whatever will help that individual horse. Acupuncture is just another tool in my box,” she says. In the U.S. we are starting to see it used more and more in veterinary medicine. Legally, only licensed veterinarians can perform acupuncture on animals. Nelson isn’t able to save or cure every animal she treats with acupuncture, but feels it helps most of them. “There are some that would not be alive today if we hadn’t done acupuncture.” She uses different types of needles, of different sizes. “There are tiny needles I use on cats, and sometimes on horses because some horses don’t like needles stuck into them. I also have big needles that are 4 to 5 inches long that I use on horses’ backs.” Nelson generally uses dry needles, but has occasionally used aqua-puncture, injecting Vitamin B12 as the fluid. “I am usually quite happy with the results I get with dry needles, however, so that’s typically what I do.” She hasn’t done any elec-

tro-stimulation on horses, like some acupuncturists do. Acupuncture complements other techniques. For instance, chiropractic care and acupuncture work very well together, with better results than using either method by itself. They are synergistic. It’s like 2 plus 2 equals 5. “This modality is completely different from our traditional treatments and is often very helpful. It’s nice to have more than one tool in your toolbox,” says Nelson. She sees a lot of benefit from the combination of acupuncture, chiropractic manipulation and proper trimming/shoeing to keep the feet in balance – which puts less stress on various structures of the feet and legs. Her Veterinary Associate, Lindsay VanDelinder, also utilizes acupuncture. “She spent time in Beijing when she was going to vet school, and has an acupuncture background,” says Nelson. F

Knowledge is the Key, Experience is the Answer By Jordan Thurston-Miller

Dr. Carden finds her passion doctoring horses “Wyoming is just a cool place to grow up,” says Candice Carden, DVM, who specializes in equine veterinary work. Candice grew up in Afton, Wyo., and completed her undergraduate schooling at the University of Wyoming. While she was an undergrad, she became involved in AQHA’s youth racing program, which led to a summer job working with racehorses in Ledbetter, Texas. That experience introduced her to the thriving equine veterinary industry in Texas and ignited her passion. Candice seized every opportunity after the summer job ended to return to the veterinary hospital where the racehorses she worked with were treated. By the time she finished her veterinary degree at Colorado State University in 2005, the hospital in Elgin, Texas, told her she had a job. Candice says working at the Elgin Veterinary Hospital was a life-changing experience. The amazing facility was a big part of her decision to become a horse vet. The operation has the capacity to hospitalize up to 150 horses and employs nine veterinarians who work solely on horses. Being involved in a clinic where many clients are regularly able to dig deep in their pockets to finance expensive treatments and therapies was a contrast

to the situation for many in her home state. After marrying K.C. Carden, a successful Quarter Horse racing trainer, in 2006, Candice also worked at various race tracks in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. The race track ambulatory business is high-paced and also came with a great deal of traveling. In 2011, K.C. and Candice decided they wanted to move back to Wyoming to raise their daughter, Kamryn, and start their own practice. They didn’t give up after their first attempt at buying a practice, in Sheridan, didn’t work out. After a little bit of searching they found a clinic for sale in Kaycee. Dr. Dwayne Christensen owned the business for nearly 40 years and has been good to work with since day-one says Candice. The “coolness” of Wyoming was demonstrated in Dr. Christensen’s attitude. “[Wyoming] is a place where people still hold on to the mentality of working hard and being self-sufficient. Kaycee is a great little town, and the community support has been outstanding; it’s nice to see there are places left where helping your neighbors is the rule, not the exception,” she said. “When you have done work like this all of your life, you cannot just up and quit one day, it is too much a part of who you are,” Candice said. She knows

this is why Dr. Christensen continues to help with cattle work in the practice. “The clientele you build up become some of your greatest friends and seeing the success that they have with their animals is the whole reason for this job. Many clients here depend on their animals for their livelihood; they need them in order to succeed.” When Dr. Christensen owned the practice, about 90 percent of the income came from cattle with the balance being earned through small animals and horse work. Candice was told that it would never work to be a horse vet in Kaycee, Wyo.; there was just not enough business or need for a horse vet. In fact, when 50 percent of their business in the first year was derived from horse clients, friends and associates were shocked. Due to the growth of the practice, they even decided to hire another veterinarian. In June 2012, Summer Hanson, DVM, joined the team. The Washington State University graduate has been a perfect fit for the clinic. In addition to providing high-quality equine medicine, the clinic also has a reputation for successful treatment of small animals and Dr. Christensen has developed the beef cattle and small ruminant side. I am just really lucky to come back and be able to give back to the ranching lifestyle that I love, as well as be able to work on high-performance athletes.

Candice says she’s been filled with joy watching the business grow. This summer they physically ran out of room to hospitalize horses a few times. They built a new addition on to the barn this past winter which includes two hospitalization stalls and an equine treatment area, and they are in the process of planning another addition to the large animal hospital. A second equine clinic, in Sheridan, Wyo., rounds out the Cardens’ practice, giving them a place to stand stallions and board horses. The indoor arena associated with that facility makes it particularly convenient for wintertime work such as lameness exams because the ground doesn’t freeze. The couple is in the process of adding a surgery

stall. Candice believes she will never be satisfied and will continue to build and improve indefinitely. K.C. and Candice are still looking to grow their business, especially because there are still many people around the area that still do not even know about the services they provide. Candice said, “Our focus is to have quality over quantity, so that we can devote the needed time to each client and patient, and not be rushing from one to another.” Candice has helped professional rodeo cowboys with their horses, including Wyoming PRCA steer wrestlers Les Shepperson and Jason Miller. “I am just really lucky to come back and be able to give back to the ranch-

ing lifestyle that I love, as well as be able to work on high-performance athletes,” said Candice. When a horse comes in lame and she can get that athlete back on track, it is the greatest feeling ever, she says. To see or hear about that athlete going out and performing well again is just icing on the cake. It is encouraging to know that the horse is happy and well and the owner is also happy. Lacerations are one of Candice’s specialities. No, she does not like cuts, but she enjoys fixing them. Most of the time repairing lacerations is like putting a puzzle back together – she starts with one piece and just keep working. The situation always seems much better when she’s done stitching the

horse up. Candice also enjoys assisting when an animal is having trouble giving birth and performing C-sections. She has even done C-sections on goats and sheep. “Babies are fun and exciting,” she says. When Candice treats a horse with severe colic requiring surgery or one that is in need of an orthopedic surgery she refers them to Sturgis Vet, CSU, or Red Lodge, Mont., as it takes specific equipment and more personnel than she has available to set up for those types of procedures. However, she really enjoys general soft tissue surgeries, such as castrations, mass removals, and these can be performed at both of her hospitals. Even though Candice obviously has a passion for working on horses she also enjoys cattle. When a rancher tells a story about a memorable cow as she comes through the chute for preg checking, it makes all of her hard work seem worthwhile. Many times the cattle are not just animals to her clients, but rather her clients know their animals as individuals. When the Atlas blizzard hit the region in October, Candice and K.C. felt the need to help out. Candice called vets in the affected areas to see if there was anything she could help with and they also donated a breeding to their stallion for an upcoming silent auction.

According to Candice, becoming proficient in equine medicine is all about the numbers. A lot of practice makes perfect, for example, when injecting joints. She believes she learned from the best while in Elgin, Texas. Watching and helping nationally respected veterinarians try new and improved methods was a useful learning experience. Truly caring about animal welfare is another important aspect of a great vet. Candice really does try to think of everything possible to fix or save an animal, and takes the job personally. She thinks knowledge is the key and experience is the answer, which is why working in Texas was so beneficial. Another key to success is considering the unique situtation of each animal owner. For example, a 4-H horse owner is most likely not going to be able to afford to put significant financial resources into their horse as compared to an NFR competitor. However, being able to help all types of owners achieve their individual goals for their animals is an important part of the business. Candice said it is important to think creatively and find other options within the customer’s price range. “Just because a person does not spend thousands on their horse, does not mean they don’t love their horse,” Candice said. “I try hard to present all treatment options to a client and

help them make an informed decision about the best way to help their animal. Obviously, you may not get as good of outcome if you choose to treat a degenerative joint condition, such as arthritis, with oral pain medication only as opposed to injecting the joint with steroids and hyaluronic acid and putting the horse on a joint supplement, but sometimes budget dictates what you can or cannot do.” All a person can do is try. Disappointment does happen, and when it does, Dr. Carden takes it hard, but she has found that most people are happy with their animal’s treatment when they know that she truly cares and always does her best. NEW BOOK Twenty-five years ago Dave started photographing the hard-working cowboys of Idaho. When people saw the first Idaho Cowboy calendar and then the resulting book, The Idaho Cowboy, they always wondered why Dave didn’t do books and calendars about cowboys in other states first. But Dave lives in Idaho and those cowboys are the ones he knew best. Eventually, Dave produced calendars and books about cowboys from other western states—Texas, Montana, California—but he has always had a special place in his heart for those Idaho cowboys. This book assembles Dave’s favorite images from 25 years of photographing Idaho cowboys. The original, The Idaho Cowboy, is a classic collector’s book and the one that started it all. This new book celebrates the 25th anniversary edition and it is sure to become a collector’s item in its own right. Scotts Bluff County Juvenile Detention Center. Much like an ancient Native American medicine man helping boys find guides for their transition to manhood, Steve Smith introduces residents in detention and other clients to the healing, ennobling equine spirit. Ever enthusiastic to discuss his work, Smith emphasizes, “this is an Equine Assisted Learning program, not a horsemanship program,” further explaining, “the horses are utilized as a tool for creating awareness within the client in regard to behaviors and how those behaviors have an effect

on individuals and situations around them. The decision making is entirely up to the client. I do not indicate any approval or disapproval. Discussions are initiated as to why the client has a particular mind-set, manner of doing things and how their decision making has influenced their success or failures while participating in the exercises.” Steve started out as a horse trainer and competed in national shows, but it just wasn’t enough. “After working on a farm, a ranch and continuing to train horses, I decided to work for the Wyoming Department of Corrections

in order to make more money and help support my own reining horses. I considered working at the Honor Farm in Riverton (Wyo.) as supervisor of their equine program, but there was nowhere for me to keep my 30-plus head of horses. “I then decided to hire on at the Scotts Bluff County Juvenile Detention Center in Nebraska. They were interested in starting an equine therapy program and I figured I was the man for the job. Upon interviewing with Ron Johns (former rancher, now Director of the Detention Center) and Patricia Miller (Assistant Director and individual responsible for wanting to start an equine program) I let them know I figured an equine program was a pretty ambitious idea for a county facility.” Steve continued, “they agreed, but indicated they would back me 100 percent if I gave them 100 percent. Here we are five years later, with our Equine Assisted Learning Program intact, and very successful.” Positive results have inspired Smith’s tireless efforts. “The program is funded through grants via the Ne-

braska Crime Commission. I have, so far, successfully applied for and received roughly $58,000 in grant funding. Of course, there is always a need for more as the program grows and the Equine therapy program at work in the Scotts Bluff County Juvenile Detention Center, price of hay escalates,” he says. with Supervisor Steve Smith observing. “Essentially, no tax revenue is utilized for the operation of the program,” Steve explains. “The Scotts Bluff County Detention Center is the only lock-secure facility in the state of Nebraska that offers such a program. I, and the other staff members, are certified through Greg Kersten’s ‘O.K. Corral Series.’ Mr. Kersten is recognized as the ‘founding father’ of Equine Assisted Learning/Psychotherapy practices.” The Scottsbluff Star Herald newspaper recently carried this news about the program: “Scotts Bluff County Detention Center Equine Therapy Program Supervisor Steve Smith leads the program that has anywhere from five to 20 youth in it at a time. The threeyear-old program began with just a few youth and has grown from there.” Those efforts have attracted favorable attention and the Nebraska Juvenile Justice Association chose Steve Smith as the recipient of the 2012 Evelyn E. Labode Service to Youth Award. “This type of programming is successful in addressing issues related to trauma, attachments, Autism, ADHD, and a variety of other issues,” Steve explains. “It can be utilized for family therapy and learning opportunities for Stallion Showcase • Tri-State Livestock News

Steve recalls life-long involvement with horses As an avid fisherman and hunter, much of Steve’s journey has encompassed the great outdoors. Nature always gripped him, causing him to find summer employment with the Forest Service throughout his high school years. Some of his first equine mentors were Thoroughbreds fresh off the track which accelerated and deepened his understanding of the horse spirit. “Aside from training offtrack Thoroughbreds, I also started training an Appaloosa stallion by the name of Mighty Illusion. He was a black and white and I believe he had some Leo breeding in him. I campaigned him in the team roping events on the Appaloosa show circuit and he ended up placing 10th at the Appaloosa World Championships in Judged Heeling. I believe he also earned his Register of Merit in Judged Heading, Judged Heeling and Steer Daubing,” Steve recalls. Smith chose the intensive equine sport of reining for his next adventure because he was never content to rest on laurels or bog down in one discipline. “I got my feet wet there by working for Dwayne Hoelscher in Longmont, Colorado,” he says. Challenges have always fueled Steve’s fire, as illustrated by his story of an Im’a Little Lena daughter he purchased from Eddy Woods in Oklahoma. “I went to pick her up and he ran her into his cattle chute to put a halter on her. She was pretty waspy and was not real impressed with the whole situation. I inquired as to her being halter broke

and Mr. Wood’s reply was ‘Yep, she had one on her when I weaned her.’ “She did lead well to the trailer, however began to protest at the prospect of being loaded. At her slightest indication of a fight, numerous Catahoula-cross dogs appeared out of nowhere and that little filly hopped right in like it was nothing. Roughly seven months later, Ima Little Hottie placed third in the Appaloosa Reining Horse Futurity at the 2000 World Championship Show,” Steve grined, adding, “The following year she led the nation in Junior Reining and Hackmore/Snaffle Bit Reining on the 2001 Appaloosa show circuit, then sold to a lady in Michigan.” Steve’s life trail led him deeper into Appaloosa competition, as well as branching into National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) shows. He developed a successful horse business while living in Colorado, then divorce brought on a move to Nebraska. Appaloosas remained his destiny, as he partnered with former National Appaloosa Queen Patti Hamburger Larsen. “This wonderful little Appaloosa gelding Patti had raised was named Bright Millenium,” Steve recalls. “Along with being a solid ranch horse, he was very successful in the NRHA pen. At that time I was associated with the Yellowstone Reining Horse Association. ‘Shorty’ qualified for the regional Affiliate Finals, but came up a tad short for making it to the Affiliate Championships.”

caregivers, educators, and authority figures as well ... We have a number of youth and families that continue on with the equine program when they are released from detention. We will also be starting to work with Veterans and their families utilizing Equine Assisted Learning/Psychotherapy to address PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) issues. Sandi Reiney, a local mental health professional, will be spearheading that program.” Steve’s strong trust in healing through horses makes him a strong advocate and defender of the program. He says, “In its infancy, the program received a lot of criticism. I am of the philosophy that if one is going to complain about the program, at least come and observe it in operation. Then one has some knowledge as to what they are criticizing.” Along with daily diligence and his joy of watching horses heal hearts and minds, Steve has even bigger dreams. “We would like to start a youth ranch to replace the Boys Ranch that was shut down a few years ago. Presently, a local rancher provides the opportunity for certain youth to experience and learn the ins and outs of ranching. They get up close and personal with such things as range management, animal husbandry, herd health, ranch management and various economic aspects of operating a ranch. “The Panhandle area of Nebraska is seriously lacking adequate services for these youth and young adults,” Steve says. “The ranch could provide not only therapeutic treatment services, but also transitional services for youth about to ‘age out’ of the system. The ranch could be self-supporting once in operation.” One can see the regret in Steve’s eyes as he acknowledges, “...however, programs are only as successful as the policies and individuals that govern the programs. There are 13 counties in the Western Nebraska Service Area and very limited programming services for youth.” Whether or not Steve Smith can fix all that ails the system responsible for at-risk youth, he always does more than his share. He’s a deep level horseman sharing from his heart and soul and making an impact. F

This sensitive and detailed portrayal of horse and rider proves yet another talent of Smith’s, who went to college on an art scholarship.

Lauing Mill Iron L Ranch Raising all-around horses from the ranch to the arena By Jan Swan Wood

Their combined family of five has grown since then and now includes: Scott and Sarah Pazour, Kaden and Clara; Dan and Tessa Pazour, Tyrell and Tripp; Keith and Erin Pazour and Trinity; Kaylie (Lauing) and Aaron Sterud; and Shean and Kimberly Lauing and Wyatt. with a double-dose of King Bootsy, plus Docs Lynx. Comos was multi-purposed and was successful in the cutting pen, winning money in NCHA and SDCHA. Como was instrumental in teaching sons Dan Pazour and Shean Lauing the sport of cutting so they could go on to the National High School Finals. “We also give Como credit for the introduction of Dan and his wife Tessa (Stewart) resulting in a marriage and a couple of our grandkids,” explains Doris Lauing, smiling. Como was also used on the ranch and was a dependable, easy-moving athlete with a great disposition. Tragically, Como died in the October 2013 blizzard that ravaged western South Dakota. “We lost him plus a daughter of First Down Dash that

He’s always able to go back to work or go rope, plus being a horse we can put about anyone one on, from the grandkids to the old timers,” says Doris. He had the looks and the pedigree to fit their program. By Frenchmans Guy, he’s out of a granddaughter of Colonel Freckles and is also Docs Prescription on the bottom side. The Lauing’s grandson Kaden Pazour, 8, is dragging calves to the fire on his good gelding Comos Dry Leo, a 2004 son of Comos Cottoneye and Lady Bar Horn. The disposition of the Lauing horses makes them a perfect fit for all-around family horses.

St. Onge, S.D., barrel horse trainer, and the two clicked. Colonel went on to run very successfully in the futurities and derbies. A consistent, trainable mind makes him a joy to ride and train, and comes out of the mares on pasture and goes right back to running barrels without a hitch. “He’s a real cowy horse too,” says Denny. “He’s nice to ride on the ranch and his disposition can’t be beat.”

“Colonel’s first colts are 4 (years old) this coming spring, so it will be fun to watch what they do. He’s subscribed to the 5-State Breeders Barrel Futurity and we’ll keep adding other futurities as more of his offspring come of age,” explains Lauing. So, combining the bloodlines of Como the cutter, Hickory the rope horse, and Colonel the barrel horse, it’s no wonder the Lauing horses are multi-talented and used in so many events. The offspring include cutters, working cow horses, calf roping horses, team roping horses, team penners/ sorters, barrel horses and great ranch horses. Even great stallions can’t do it alone though, and the Lauing broodmare band is a crosscut of disciplines. Of course there are the Comos Cottoneye and Frenchmans Hickory daughters, plus the blood of Peppy San Badger, Master Hand, Sugar Bars, Doc Bar, Paddy’s Irish Whiskey, Docs Jack Frost, Dash For Cash and more. The mares represent the top blood in the performance horse industry today and the

Lauings continue to add more speed blood to the mix as well. “Each year we try to take one of our best mares and breed to an outside stallion, adding those bloodlines to our program,” adds Lauing. “We feel the perfect cross is cow sense blended with speed.” “We run 20-25 mares and are working on staying at that number and continually improving the bloodlines. We’ve made it a habit to sell a mare if we add a mare, so we don’t get too many mares,” says Lauing. “We’ve downsized in the past few years, concentrating on quality, not quantity.” In 2011, Denny and Doris made the move from Blunt, S.D., to east of Sturgis, S.D. “We were both raised in central South Dakota, but we felt like we fit better in the western part of the state with our horses and cattle. We have had no regrets and really like it out here,” says Doris. From 2006 to 2012, the Lauings hosted a annual production sale. In 2013, they were invited to sell at the Lopez and Meyer Production Sale in Faith, S.D. “We were pleased with the outcome of the sale and hope to continue the relationship in the years to come,” states Doris. The Lauings offer everything from weanlings to broke horses and broodmares at each sale. They don’t take horses to another sale, though they do sell private treaty on the ranch yearround and welcome visitors to come and take a look. “No matter what you want a horse to do, we have one for you,” says Lauing, “We have concentrated on the disposition so that they are very trainable and family friendly, too.” The Lauings have horses being used in many states, plus Canada and Mexico. Lauings Mill Iron L Ranch is a Ranching Heritage Breeder, plus they are involved with the AQHA Youth Scholarship Program. Working with youth and helping them excel in the equine industry is very important to the Lauings. Getting their horses into the right hands is critical too, as their horses are bred to work and have a real job. “Our own kids all rode our homebred horses, and now it’s gratifying to see our grandkids riding them both on the ranch and in the rodeo arena. It’s a

dream come true to see our grandkids on them,” says Doris. “Of course, it’s everyone’s dream to see one of their horses go to the NFR too, and we sure hope that happens someday.” The future, even with the recent loss of Comos Cottoneye, certainly looks bright for the Lauings. Their program is successful with horses being used at every level of competition in multiple events. “We’ll be looking for another stallion to replace Como, but haven’t really decided exactly what we’re wanting yet. He will be very hard to replace,” says Denny. “It’s our goal to produce great Quarter Horses that can work on the ranch,

in the rodeo arena or anywhere else in the world. A well-balanced performance horse with disposition is always our goal,” says Lauing. “A horse that the whole family can ride, then go win on in any competition they choose is the foundation of our breeding program and that isn’t going to change in the future.” F For more information about the Lauing Mill Iron L Ranch and Denny and Doris Lauing, visit their website at www.lauingmillironlranch.com, or call 605-347-6193.

Western Horse Tradition

Pitzer Ranch raising quality horses for generations By Loretta Sorensen

T

alking about horses is just one of the family traditions at Nebraska’s world renowned Pitzer Ranch. Found nestled in the Sandhills region northwest of the small ranch town of Ericson, the ranch provides an abundance of grass and water to support reputation Quarter Horses and registered Angus cattle. It was 1945 when Howard first established Pitzer Ranch. At that time he rented grass for 25 cents per acre and took in cattle. Profit from pasture cattle was used to purchase land and cows. Living expenses were covered through horse trades. Howard’s grandson Jim Brinkman says Howard gained much of his early

knowledge of livestock while traveling with his father Harvey Pitzer to farms and sale barns to buy and sell cattle, draft horses and mules. “My great-grandfather was a trader,” Jim says. “He’d put together bunches of cattle, horses, or whatever and literally herd them to the nearest sale barn, with my grandfather Howard often trailing along. When he began dealing in horses, Gramps represented horses as they were. That’s the only way he would have it. The value of honesty started a core of buyers that continues on in generations of return customers.” It was 1956, after 10 years on the ranch, when Howard began “seriously” developing his Quarter Horses. It started with the purchase of his original foundation stud, Pat Star Jr. He found the stallion at a match race in Oklahoma. However, it was the 1964 horse trade for Two Eyed Jack that had the greatest impact on Pitzer Ranch genetics. “Gramps showed Two Eyed Jack aggressively until he was nine,” Jim says. “The stallion earned 217 halter points along with performance points in western pleasure, hunter under saddle, reining, western riding, cow horse, and even ran barrels a time or two. He also worked cattle on the ranch, but his greatest contribution was as a breeding stallion.” When Two Eyed Jack retired in 1991, he had sired 1,416 foals with 562 amassing 37,035 American Quarter Horse Association points. It was 119 of the foals that went on to become AQHA champions, 30 youth champions, along with 33 world or

Howard Pitzer and Two Eyed Jack made history in the AQHA industry and their legacy is continued on the Pitzer Ranch today.

reserve world championships. With the adoption of AI, Two Eyed Jack bred as many as 434 mares in one season, proving to be one of the alltime, pre-potent breeding studs in Quarter Horse history (all before the availability of shipped or frozen semen). In 1997, Howard and “Jack’s” accomplishments were recognized when both were inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. Jim continues the ranch’s legacy, holding annual spring and fall horse sales along with a registered Angus bull sale. “With decades of success in the arena, horses and our horse sales have overshadowed the simple fact that Pitzer Ranch is a diversified working cattle and horse operation,” Jim says. “We have a long-standing reputation for producing genetically dominant, high-quality livestock. Continuing to produce high-quality horses isn’t any easier now than it was when Howard started developing the ranch’s bloodlines.”

Barrel Racing Saddle

To maintain the ranch’s genetic quality while bringing in some out-cross genetics, Jim maintains a herd of about 300 mares. In a crop of 250 foals, typically five or six catch Jim’s eye. To carry on the Pitzer Ranch’s successful genetics, Jim is always on the lookout for studs and mares he prefers. When he traveled to Brazil, he was impressed with the fact that the ranch hands saddled up every morning. “There were no pickups or four-wheelers.” He commented. “Their horses were all sound and worked on the ranch every day.” That “no coddling” philosophy is the same one Howard used throughout the years as he established Pitzer Ranch. “We’ve never fed our horses special rations,” Jim says. “They work all day, are turned out at night and expected to go to work the next day. Our horses are bred to be physically strong, correct legged, functional, and willing to work. Our out-cross

sires bring in even more modern, genetic traits. The better out-cross fillies are put back into the Pitzer Ranch breeding program.” About a dozen breeding stallions are featured on the ranch website. To deserve a spot on the stud roster, stallions are accomplished competitors and proven winners. Current sires include Show Me A Song Joes and Justa Genuine Jack. “Show Me A Song Joes is a very capable, stout and shapey horse that finds work easy.” Jim says. “He will probably lead our sire groups for the next five years. Justa Genuine Jack packs a lot of muscle and do-ability in his colts. In our family lines we don’t trend toward a horse that’s too lightboned. When selecting for genetics, we try to stay away from fads and fit more buyers by being an all-around, middle-of-the-road horse rather than limited to a specialty. We believe the ideal horse is one the family can use on the ranch then compete with on the weekends.” In order to keep current in the western horse industry, Jim regularly participates in shows and competitions. “The industry changes all the time,” Jim says. “The only way to know how your program stands is to evaluate how you and your horses do in competition. “Producing quality genetics isn’t an exact process,” Jim adds. “It helps to have large numbers of mares and stallions to produce horses with different capabilities. We use line-breeding of successful type to produce horses of consistent quality. You have to know what you’re doing with the genetics to make line-breeding work. It takes three or four years before you can be sure a specific cross produces the horse you want. One advantage we have is the history of generations of proven mares and stallions. I can go back several generations and know characteristics and information about specific horses. That gives me great perspective and advantage when making breeding decisions and genetic selections.” Because they believe so strongly in breeding horses that can be used on the ranch and also perform in competition, the Brinkmans developed the HP Ranch Horse Invitational. It’s an

annual competition for 4 to 6-year-olds sired by proven Pitzer Ranch sires. Jim notes that ancient Roman writings describe war horse battles and believes that judged competitions limit creativity and lead horsemen to be mere imitators of previous competition winners. “We used those teachings as one of the ideas in developing our HPI competition. Our awards go to horses correctly completing the five events in the shortest amount of time” Jim says. Dependability, probably the most notable trait of Pitzer Ranch horses, is still one of the foundation principles Jim uses in his breeding strategies.

“We also breed disposition,” Jim notes. “Today’s riders use horses more on weekends for recreation rather than as cowboys working on the ranch. It’s a trend we don’t necessarily like to see, but it’s where the industry is going. Pitzer Ranch sales typically offer a couple hundred riding horses. With that many, buyers are more likely to find what they’re looking for. There aren’t many places where you find that many quality horses in one stop. It’s one of the Pitzer Ranch traditions that we are proud to continue to maintain.” F

len and Janet Long ranch north of Enning, S.D., some 60 miles east of Sturgis. They are the parents of three children, Brooke (Nick) Uherka, Benny, and Bailey; and boast three grandchildren, Tyce, Taya and Tripp. The Longs raise good black cattle, Columbia/Rambouillet sheep and Quarter Horses with color, conformation, disposition and athletic versatility.

Glen’s parents, Benny and Irene Long bought the ranch in 1959 and Glen and Janet own a portion of it today. Glen grew up there, learning the ways and wisdom of a stockman from his father. Through his younger years, Glen participated in 4-H rodeo, and was an all-around cowboy in high school rodeo – riding bulls, team roping and bulldogging. The family is thankful for old 8 mm movies that recorded the Long boys in action. Janet’s dad, Jim Bradley, managed ranches for Western Cattle Company so she grew up riding and learning from him. “He had a knack for picking good horses,” she says proudly. He inspired us kids, kept us well mounted and taught us a lot.” In spite of that she giggles about the time the family’s irascible Shetland pony got the best of him. “‘Topsy’ was kinda ornery so Dad was gon’na show her a thing or two inside the barn. Mom had her chickens in there and a tank for watering them. Dad was on Topsy bareback. In the course of pulling her usual tricks she reared ... and by the time the dust settled Dad was in the chicken watering tank.” Those were happy, memory-making years for the seven children in the

Bradley family. “We didn’t go very much, but great fun was had riding the Cheyenne River bottoms on our Welsh ponies and Quarter Horse geldings,” Janet recalls. “We went swimming at the dam, where we weren’t supposed to be without our parents. I have such good memories of the horses we rode and times we had.” Like her husband, Janet enjoyed competing in both 4-H and high school rodeo. Glen and Janet moved to the ranch in 1984. Brooke and Benny were 3 and 4, just the right age to love learning

to ride on Glen’s Appaloosa gelding “Clyde.” One of Benny’s proudest moments was winning a buckle with him at a local playday. 4-H rodeos were the family’s entertainment on weekends, and their vacation was the trip to the State 4-H Finals in Pierre every August. As the kids grew up they moved into high school and college rodeo, even competing at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Pueblo, Colo. Daughter Brooke, now 32, graduated from South Dakota State University where she was on the rodeo team all four years barrel racing on a good palomino mare MM Creamnsugar. She also tied goats on Watch Dolly Pine (the dam of Watch Me Go Cowboy) a mare also used for barrel racing and limited breakaway roping. Today, MM Creamnsugar is 21 years old and has assumed the duties of teaching the grandchildren to ride.

Snippy’s Cowboy. That foal is the fancy blue roan stud colt “Chaz,” registered as Sir Bea Cowboy, now senior sire at the Long Ranch. Sir Bea Cowboy is a ’96 model, packing the lines of champions like Snippy’s Cowboy, Sir Beat, Two Eyed Jack, Orphan Drift, Cuellar ... and the list goes on. Janet comments, “We cross him on all kinds of mares and he throws about 95 percent color plus consistently producing foals with keen pretty heads and solid conformation. He also passes his kind, willing disposition on to his get, which are very trainable and have proven themselves in the roping events at arenas across the region. Popular pedigree announcer John Johnson calls him ‘rodeo made,’” she grins. One of the Long’s junior sires is Sir Bea Cowboy’s 2007 son Watch Me Go Cowboy, out of a Watch Joe Jack granddaughter. The other is Paddys Shot of Sugar, a 2007 buckskin stallion out of the arena-proven, Sugar Bars granddaughter, MM Creamnsugar and sired by a son of Paddy’s Irish Whiskey. His oldest foals are 4 this year and Janet says their owners have been reporting back “how trainable, very light, and easy to get along with” they are. She agrees – she’s already ponying horses off her 2-year-old. The Long’s have always liked the Paddy’s Irish Whiskey bloodline, and were excited to acquire a son of the sought-after stallion. Boy O Paddy Boy came to the ranch this spring and they settled five mares before a freak accident ended his life, a mere two months after they bought him. Janet comments, “It was a tragic loss as he mirrored our senior stallion Sir Bea Cowboy in conformation and disposition. We look forward to his foal crop.” The Long’s horse operation is sizable, with some 25 broodmares. This maternal gene pool includes such rich bloodlines as Driftwood, Top Moon, Sun Frost, Freckles Playboy, Doc’s Oak, Doc’s Hickory, Okie Leo, Blue Valentine, Sugar Bars, Windchester, Special Effort, First Down Dash, Sunshine Jet, Truly Truckle, sir Beat, Otoe, Doc’s Lynx, Smart Little Lena, Miss N Cash, Peppy San Badger, Tyree’s Watch, On the Money Red, Pine Bars and Streakin Six.

Janet feels the mares contribute a lot to the shaping of a colt. “We have ridden most of the mares we own and used some in the arena. We select mares with disposition, a good mind and athletic ability ... and we don’t breed undesirables. “I call our horses ‘user friendly,’” Janet grins. “I spend a lot of time out in the pasture with them when the foals are young, and by the time I’ve gotten all their pictures for the sale catalogs most of them are coming around for me to scratch them. “People often call us a few days after one of our sales to say that they

buy a lot of foals, but ours are the only ones who meet them at the corral gate the next morning after they bring them home!” says Janet. “We sell most of the colts as weanlings,” she continues, “and don’t see many come up for resale ... probably a good sign the buyers are pleased with their purchases. We also have quite a few repeat buyers.” F Check out http://rqhba.com/long.htm and www.longranchqh.com to learn more, or just take a drive to Enning, S.D., and see them for yourself.

Bob’s daughter Amanda Welsh running barrels on Hollywood.

Necessity breeds Barrel Horses By Holly Thomas

Starting his own AQHA breeding program was not something Bob Welsh (not to be confused with his son, 7-time NFR bull riding qualifier Bobby Welsh) set out to do. Instead, it was something that came about out of necessity – a necessity he noticed other people were looking for as well. Ten years later, his breeding program in Gillette, Wyo., is gathering steam on and off the barrels. 62

Tri-State Livestock News • Stallion Showcase

It all started with Welsh’s stepdad’s stud horse, Bold Sonny Dee, fondly called “Pirate.” Welsh always admired the sire’s pedigree which stemmed from AQHA foundation sire Three Bars; but even more so, he appreciated the horse’s demeanor. He noted that Three Bars-bred horses generally “like to get along with people, are ready to go to work, and they can run!” As a full-time farrier, Welsh

also pointed out, “they have good bones and good feet.” When Welsh found himself attending barrel races with his daughter, he began looking for flashy, fast horses and, he noticed, so was everybody else! But he needed more than that. Welsh said, “Bottle-rocket horses have their place, but they don’t always make great family horses.” Welsh also needed a horse he could put an inex-

perienced rider on, take hunting on the mountain, and then come home and rope a steer on... and again, so did everybody else. Pirate had proven himself to be dependable, hardworking, and fast – all of the qualities he and so many other people were looking for, not only in a barrel racing prospect, but also in a family ranch horse. With the goal of producing this highly sought-after type of horse in mind, Welsh decided to buy into his stepdad’s breeding program and began acquiring mares that would complement the Three Bars breeding. About four years later, Welsh’s daughter-in-law had a palomino stud horse that caught his attention. Frosty Frenchman was a 7-year-old palomino who was flashy and fast. His grandsire, Frenchmans Guy, had a strong reputation and a lot of heart. When Welsh’s daughter-in-law decided to let the stud go, he responded, “I’ve gotta have that horse!” He noted, “Those Frenchmans Guy horses are warriors. They don’t back off. They’re good, solid horses and you couldn’t ask for a better friend. They’re not afraid of a day’s work.” It turned out he was right. Welsh’s daughter rode Frosty French-

man, fondly called “Hollywood,” and qualified twice for the Mountain State Circuit Finals, won Gillette’s Fizz Bomb Classic and Barrel Futurity twice, and brought home numerous other PRCA barrel race winnings. Any new addition to Welsh’s breeding program has to bring solid breeding and desirable qualities to the table; but before any new horse steps foot on his place, they receive a thorough look-over from his experienced-farrier eye. “I look at confirmation of a horse first because I have a standard. If they are sub-standard of what I want in my herd, they don’t make it here,” said Welsh. He’s seen too many horses with poor legs and feet and known that they would not last on the racetrack or around barrels in the arena. These qualities don’t only stem from the sires, however. Welsh has acquired mares to complement his breeding program with bloodlines going back to sires such as Dash for Cash, Doc O’Lena, Idaho Special, Bold Ruler and Ronas Ryon. These mares carry the same sought-after traits that Welsh’s sires do: dependability, confirmation, disposition and speed.

“The stud is a big contribution, but you’ve got to have good mares. If you’re not going to get the best mares you can find, don’t worry about getting a stud at all. The mares are it,” said Welsh. Several of the mares in his herd now are daughters of Pirate that he has bred to Hollywood. Welsh commented on the result, “With Pirate’s super disposition and the heart of a lion out of the Frenchmans Guy bloodline – they just blend awesome.” The result of Welsh’s necessity-born breeding program has been sound, trustworthy, speed horses. He has spent days, months and years training and riding many of them and is more than pleased with their personalities, commenting that he cannot recall one that offered to buck. Welsh’s horses have been taken to work on ranches, run around barrels, ridden by children, and hunted off of in the mountains. He’s been told by his clients that they wished they had a herd full of his horses, while others consider his horses part of the family. Welsh conducts barrel racing clinics for beginners in Gillette and has been able to not only teach those starting out, but provide them with a solid barrel

racing prospect trustworthy enough for inexperienced riders. Being a young breeding program, several of Welsh’s Pirate-Hollywood crosses are coming of age for barrel futurities, including two Welsh and his daughter will be riding separately and competing against. Unfortunately, tragedy struck in the summer of 2013 when Hollywood died unexpectedly of unknown causes. The loss hit the Welsh family hard and threw a wrench into their

breeding program. Thankfully, though, when one door closes, another door opens as one of Hollywood’s colts began to bear a striking resemblance. “I’ve got a colt from last spring that is Hollywood’s son, he’s a palomino, and he’s the spitting image of what Hollywood looked like when he was a baby – even to the point of having the exact same two swirls, one between his eyes and one on his forelock. He acts just like him and has the same confidence,” said Welsh; but he isn’t putting all his eggs in one basket. Welsh is still keeping a watchful eye out for the next horse to bring practical and athletic qualities to his program, much like he was 10 years ago. In the meantime, Welsh continues to breed to Pirate and produce athletic, all-around family horses that anybody can ride, with the hopes of someday sending a barrel horse to the NFR. “We want to get that speed, but we don’t want to sacrifice disposition. Don’t get me wrong – we’ve got speed! Speed is important, but equally important is the disposition and cooperation of the horse,” said Welsh, continuing, “...we want a horse that wants to work with us with a good mind and good sense. If a horse mentally does his job really good, he doesn’t have to be the fastest horse at the track or at the barrel race. The quality of the run and the cooperation and the teamwork make up a lot. A horse that can be super-fast but doesn’t want to cooperate with you is gonna get beat every time. There are a lot of gals that know that. How many times have you seen a horse go in the arena and do his job so well he just smokes everybody? That horse is exactly what we are shooting for.” Necessity has born many inventions; but for Bob Welsh necessity has born palomino racehorses that are as versatile as they are fast. His horses are ready to be a teammate and the next young girl or boy to discover one may very well win the world. F
