COVER ARTIST Bill Anton
Bill Anton was born in Chicago in 1957, and later moved to Prescott, Arizona after graduating from Northern Arizona University. When he committed to painting full-time, he studied under Michael Lynch and Ned Jacob, who encouraged him to paint from life. Anton’s work has been published in Southwest Art, Architectural Digest, Art of the West, Equine Images, Western Horseman and Art-Talk. He was featured on the cover of the April 2006 American Artist magazine. Corporate collections that include his work are Sears, Dupont, State Farm Insurance, Bank of America, Hewlett Packard, and Trust Company of the West. His award-winning work has been displayed at the Prix de West at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Master of the American West at The Autry Museum, The National Center for American Western Art, The Old West Museum and The National Museum of Wildlife Art. In addition, his work is in the permanent collection of the prestigious Gilcrease Museum. “I do not see myself as a biographer of the ‘cowboy.’ I know some artists feel they are recording a historical portrayal of ranch life today in the American West. But the focus of my work has always been mood and passion.
If I’m recording anything, I’m recording how I feel about the West. I want the viewer to feel the drama of atmosphere and the mystery of a western night. I want the volume and portent of a cloud to be evident in the calligraphy of a brush stroke. The pack of the muscle below a horse’s shoulder should be energized by the gestural application of paint. “You see, I love to paint. And I love the American West. I was born in Chicago, but the Sierra Nevada, Sangre de Cristo, Sawatch and a hundred other ranges of our Rocky Mountains were the only ‘Big Shoulders’ that ever interested me. Walking thunderstorms, sunstruck cedars, rimrock and artfully abstract water patterns charge the landscape here with an impossible beauty. “Amidst this nobility is its caretaker: the rancher. With the natural ease of generations bred to the saddle, he is a powerful image, further ennobled by a fine horse. An artist under the spell of the West has the privilege of marshaling the virtues of landscape, figure and equine painting into one supremely paintable subject: the American cowboy. TO GOD BE THE GLORY” https://www.billantonstudio.com

FRIDAY, JAN. 29, 7 P.M. Join us for the Stock Show Kick-Off party with the stray gathering and dance to follow. This event will consist of a four-man team. FREESTYLE BULLFIGHT COMPETITION BARNETT ARENA FREE ADMISSION
THURSDAY, FEB. 4, 2 P.M. FRIDAY, FEB. 5, 3 P.M. TICKETED FINAL ROUNDS
FRIDAY, FEB. 5, 7:30. P.M. SATURDAY, FEB. 6, 1:30 P.M. & 7:30 P.M. In 1979, at the 2nd Annual PRCA Rodeo Rapid City, an event was born that had never been seen before in rodeo. It was an invitational freestyle bullfight organized by Jim Sutton. Following the bull riding event, each bullfighter had a set time period to dance, fight and spin his way around a Mexican fighting bull trying to impress the judges and earn the most points to win the contest. The crowd loved it. There was a danger factor and thrill that kept people glued to their seats. And while no one wanted to see a bullfighter hurt, they didn’t mind if they got banged around a little bit. The Wrangler Jeans Corporation loved it too, and, starting in 1980, sponsored the Wrangler Bullfight Tour. After a year of competition at major rodeos across the United States, the top six freestyle bullfighters were chosen to compete for a cash purse at the National Finals Rodeo. Over four consecutive days each bullfighter battled the most aggressive bulls to see who could come up with the highest score to determine the World Champion. The rankest bulls were put together from all across the nation. The tour lasted 20 years, ending after the 2000 NFR. In celebration of the 42nd Annual PRCA Rodeo Rapid City, Sutton Rodeo will be featuring a Freestyle Bullfight Competition. Catch the first round action Feb. 4 and second round Feb. 5, where the bullfighter competitors will each compete 40-70 seconds, trying to convince a judge their fight is best. Top competitors advance into the rodeo performances Feb. 5-6, where they will compete head-to-head and one will be crowned the 2021 Rodeo Rapid City Freestyle Bull Fight Champion during the Feb. 6 7:30 p.m. Rodeo Rapid City performance! W
hile her lifelong contributions to the Black Hills Stock Show, Central States Fair, and the Midwest horse industry are illustrious, Mary London’s humility and selflessness are just as well known. The honored horsewoman served on the Central States Fair’s board of directors for around 20 years, beginning in 1995. She was able to bring the ranchers to town for their own competition, and was instrumental in creating
a more versatile, quality-driven aspect to the horse sale. Her dedicated and creative efforts are obvious to everyone, except maybe herself. She diverted most accolades to her friends and other board members when asked about her accomplishments. London grew up in northern Brown County, South Dakota, on a farm near Aberdeen. “To me, I led an idyllic life. We lived in the Elm River Valley, which was just gorgeous. We had

unlimited area to ride in, and it was a great childhood,” London said. She was always active in 4-H, in various ways – from showing her dad’s commercial-turned-club calves, to the forestry and gardening activities. Her interest in horses began when she was 5 years old, when her dad (an auctioneer at the local sale barn) brought home a pony in a stock truck. London said she rode the pony in the back of the 6 by 8 foot truck. “It was surprising because my dad didn’t like horses, but this was one amazing pony. He stayed with us until after I was married. He taught us three girls so much about horses. He wasn’t necessarily a nice pony because he would bite and he would kick, but he taught us respect and what to look out for.” Mary with Eleanor and Hugh Ingalls.
Horses weren’t her only interest or hobby growing up. A bit of a renaissance woman, she competed in high school sports, was on the student council, the debate team, and the editor of her school newspaper. When she was a sophomore, her family was asked if she’d be willing to drive the school bus, since they lived at the end of their route. Horses remained the forefront, though. “New neighbors moved in and built a thoroughbred breeding operation. Rather than know the presidents of the United States, I knew the chronological order of all the Kentucky Derby winners. I would spend part of the summers feeding when they were out of town and halter-breaking colts. We went to various racetracks across the Midwest in the summers, and I still have a love of thoroughbreds today. The highlight of my honeymoon was seeing Secretariat at Claiborne Farms in Kentucky.”

“I was interested in the conditioning of a horse. The goal of the gentleman I worked for was to increase the stride of his horses by a quarter of an inch. He said he could win a lot of races by doing that, and he did it. He didn’t look at winning by three lengths, he just wanted to increase the stride and I always remembered that. Keeping those small goals eventually turned into something big. “

London’s intense interest in the horse industry carried over to interest in the Black Hills Stock Show, so when she received a call asking if she’d be on the board, she agreed- but turned the 45-minute, once-a-month meeting into something to be taken more seriously. “Things transpired that the fair wasn’t in a great operating position, and we were able to hire Ron Jeffries to be the fair manager. He applied for the position and that was instrumental in saving the Central States Fair. There was a great board of members like Hugh Ingalls, Dick Bray, and Lyndell Pederson, who had such a common-sense approach, realizing we couldn’t provide activities that didn’t financially work

She also served on the Horse Sale committee. “The horse market was on the upward go. People were really demanding a broke horse, something that could perform and do something. I thought rather than make it somebody’s production sale, we needed to offer a variety of broke horses. We started screening them the best we could through pictures at first, then throughout the years they would look at videos. This was before the event center, so I admired people for consigning a horse because they’d have to stall it at the fairgrounds, then on a cold, snowy day, haul the horse down to the Civic Center and tie it up with thousands of people and I thought, these folks are really serious about selling a horse if they can go through all this.” Relating to her drive to see quality broke performance horses at the sale, her feelings towards the horse industry’s breakdown of niche specialties bothers her. “It seems like we have so many facets of horses now. We have barrel racers, reiners, cutters--the horse industry is becoming more of a specific industry. That bothers me. I think it’s taking away from the ability of the horse as an animal to succeed in many different venues.” After her daughter graduated high school, London was set on selling the cutting horse Maggie had used. After a friend convinced
her to compete, London herself cut on the horse for 10 more years, then went on to trail ride with him, going to the Bighorn Mountains. “I just see how versatile the horse is, and I hate how much we concentrate on one event or sell them as a one-event horse. Maybe we’re getting away from that now, but you used to come to our sale and everything was a heading horse or a heel horse. That doesn’t mean those horses can’t go down the road or down the trail.”

London’s daughter, Maggie Klapperich, said although London was a stay at home mom, it sometimes didn’t feel that way. “She spent hours in meetings and on the phone the entire year working on the Stock Show. By the time the end of January arrived, it was just exciting to see the result of the countless hours the volunteers put into it. So my favorite memory was the people she met along the way and how they became family to us. The horse sale weekend was always a favorite, as it was a chance to catch up with friends and family – and of course it was fun to see who what buying what. My dad, who had been a ringman at that sale my entire childhood, died Monday after the Stock Show in 1998. I still remember my mom putting in many hours at the civic center that week. I was always so proud of how she was a
part of helping that sale grow to what it is today,” Klapperich said. London’s passion for helping and volunteering in her community and her dedication to the horse industry stems from the basic idea of educating about agriculture. Her belief is we should all know where our food comes from. She used to practice plant and grain identification with her daughter, and was in awe when one of her daughter’s friends had never been off Interstate 90. London said she pulled over and started pulling out sunflowers and corn stalks. “What feeds us is the backbone of this country, and that’s the livestock and grain industry. We need to continue to make it easy for the youth to be involved. Not all of them can live on farms or ranches, but they can at least know what they’re about.”

Stockman of the year Kammerer Livestock develops a diversified seedstock, commercial, and custom grazing operation while continuing the family legacy. BY EMME DEMMENDAAL
L
ocated in the foothills of Black Hills just north of Ellsworth Airforce Base near Rapid City, Kammerer Livestock, this year’s Stockman of the Year recipient, faces into the frost-biting winters and dry summers that characterize South Dakota to produce profitable cattle and raise the next generation of agriculturists. With deep roots in the community, voluntary service has been a long-time hallmark for Matt and April Kammerer, along with their grown children: Amanda, Jake, Jessica, and Dillon — the fifth-generation to be raised on the ranch. The Kammerer family owns and operates a diversified 400-head Angus seedstock and commercial cattle operation, 250 sheep, and manages a custom grazing business in the summer, all while donating their time to livestock events in the ag community. The family’s homestead dates back to 1882. The original home on the ranch was built by Matt’s great-grandfather, John. The original logs put into place on the house are still evident, but the building has been renovated and updated through the

years. Similar to the original building, the enterprise has grown and evolved through the generations of Kammerers running the ranch. “We’ve always raised cattle and sheep,” Matt laughs, “And kids too,” referring to his large extended family. Like the previous generations of Kammerers, diversification and tradition is at the heart of what they do. Kammerer Livestock has always been commercially-focused with profitability top of mind. The operation concentrated primarily on backgrounding feeder calves until 1999, when they purchased their first group of registered Angus cows from a local breeder, Dean Linquist. Since then, they have split between developing registered seedstock bulls along with backgrounding feeder calves sold at a local sale barn. In an environment where the weather can be unreliable year-by-year, Kammerer Livestock cattle are expected to have sound feet and legs to travel, a good temperament, and rebreed in a 60day window each year.

Kammerer shares that balance is the key to success in their seedstock and commercial cows. They cull cows and heifers who don’t raise a quality calf each year, “If a cow can’t raise a calf out here in western South Dakota on crested wheat or brom then there isn’t much sense in having them around.” By focusing on quality of grass in conjunction with sound calves, the Kammerers develop reliable bulls for their clients and wean off higher-weight steers to background before selling. To start, bulls are never creep-fed. Matt says, “I feel people are chasing numbers way too much and not looking at what grass they’re getting over corn, when it comes to
feeding cattle. We don’t creep feed because if you do, the big and heavy bull that is weaned off doesn’t reflect how it will perform. It can also mislead producers on how their cow herd is doing for them too.” The registered cattle are AI bred mid-May to calve in late February and March. The commercial cows are bull-bred before being moved out to allotments in the Black Hills National Forest for the summer, and they start calving the first of April and wrap up the end of May, in a 60-day window. For the last few years, heifers are not culled at weaning time, but developed through spring when they can be pelvic measured and culled for disposition before breeding starts.

This upcoming April marks the 15th annual bull sale Kammerer Livestock has hosted with the CK Bar Ranch and additional guest consignors in St. Onge. Each year 25-60 Angus yearling bulls are sold. For many buyers, feed efficiency is the buzzword for genetics that will convert feed into pounds at lower inputs. For Kammerer Livestock, efficiency is proven.
Kammerer is sold on Angus genetics in and out of the show ring. Kammerer shares, “It’s the nature of the cow. They’re just the old English breed, but unlike a lot of these continental breeds that have just gotten too big or the show ring dictates what they do with them, Angus is functional — out on the grass and calving on their own.”
Kammerer says, “Efficiency is talked about a lot, but our cow families are being tested. Our registered and commercial cattle are run together, and the bulls can perform in any environment.”
When Matt and April started raising cattle, they purchased additional property off the ranch and utilized the national forest allotments during the summer for grazing their cattle. A little over eight years ago, custom grazing was added to their business plan to move around investments and add more cash flow between the bull sale and selling feeder calves

in November. Matt says, “We take in about 300-head of cattle each summer for five to six months. As cattle producers, we have so much capital wrapped up in cows and equipment, whereas, the added income helps pay many operation expenses and we don’t have as much invested in inputs.” Working a diversified operation calls for all hands on deck. The three oldest children, Amanda, Jake, and Jessica have graduated college, while the youngest, Dillon is still in high school. Amanda works as livestock/marketing director for Black Hills Stock Show (BHSS) and helps out on the weekends. Jake, who owns about 40 head of cows, helps throughout the week on the ranch
and also splits his time working on a fencing crew. Jessica runs the 250 head of sheep for Kammerer Livestock and also is building her own preg checking business. As the youngest, Dillon puts in wherever he can. “Everyone knows what needs to be done, even when they are working off the ranch, they step in and help out whenever they’re available,” April says. Most of the day-to-day work is handled by Matt and April, who also manages the paperwork. A big part of Kammerer Livestock’s year is the local cattle shows. Not only is the family a staple at the Central States Fair (CSF) and the BHSS

show for us that it is silly to not go in and volunteer. Good organizations like these shows require a lot of volunteer work. It’s inexpensive to go have a little family fun and help out.” Kammerer Livestock was selected as this year’s Stockman of the Year. The award, started in 1992, recognizes the family for their contribution and growth of the BHSS and CSF livestock events. A committee selects recipients who are nominated by the board as well as the industry. Lori Maude, chairman of the livestock committee, shares that the Kammerer family has been a big part of the shows and volunteering, essential to making the livestock events possible. April ensures that the volunteers are fed and watered. Matt’s always helping weighing calves, checking calves in, getting a show lined up, making sure people are ready to go in the ring. Maude concludes, “It’s very much a family thing. They do so much behind the scenes and, you know, and I think that’s a big part of what makes events successful — volunteers like them.”

t was through a horse trade that Warren and Mayola West first met, and the trade must have been a good one, considering that was in 1979. Since then, the couple has worked together raising their family to be good horsemen and women, breeding and training good horses and together,

running cattle on their ranches in New Underwood and Marcus, South Dakota. In similar fashion, it came as no surprise that together, Warren and Mayola earned the title of 2021 Horse Person of the Year for the Black Hills Stock Show.
Both Warren and Mayola entered into their marriage with stallions and broodmares. Together, Mayolas love for Paint Horses and Warren’s appreciation for good Quarter Horses created a horse breeding program that combined Quarter Horse conformation with Paint Horse color. When Mayola left the Belle Fourche River Ranch where she grew up, her two-horse trailer had a paint stallion on the left side and a milk cow on the right. “In the Paint Horse Association, they have of course been influenced by the Quarter Horse blood at times,
you know one might give up color for conformation, but we didn’t do that,” Mayola says. “We kept our Quarter Horse conformation but insisted that our Paint Horses meet the same criteria and I think that helped us.” They learned for a breeding program to keep up with the industry, you need to continually improve your quality of stallions and broodmares, and being involved in the Black Hills Stock Show and on Stallion Row for so many years gave them front lines information on what the industry was looking for.
LEFT, CLOCKWISE: The Wests have been attending the Central States Fair and Black Hills Stock Show for over 60 years, with Mayola competing in the barrel racing and Warren showing cattle. In 2010, Mayola, riding one of their stallions, Taris Hero, and Gae Selting won the Open Two-Man Sorting at the AQHA Region 2 Championship Show in Rapid City at Central States Fairgrounds.
“We’ve seen so many changes over the years we’ve been in the business, but they’ve all been good changes,” Mayola says. “You must listen to the public and watch what they want and need, you can’t stay with one old program and think that it’s going to carry you forever, because it won’t.” One of the most important aspects of their breeding program, to Mayola, was the broodmares. Not only were their papers and colors desirable, but each one was broke to ride, and something that Mayola liked to ride, before she was put in the broodmare band.
74

“If I didn’t like the way a mare rode, she wasn’t bred in my program,” Mayola says. “They were all saddle horses first, and after 50 or 60 years, that pays you back. If I didn’t like riding them, I simply wouldn’t allow them to be bred, to reproduce something that I did not like myself.” The program started with foundation bred Quarter Horses in the beginning, eventually Mayola says that had to add a bit of running blood to keep up with the barrel racers, but it was when they started to add the working cow horse bloodlines that Mayola says they really hit the jackpot.
“I wish I would have realized that part of it, or I would have done that a lot earlier,” she says. “It became really important to me, breeding a horse that would watch a cow automatically, I mean it was like a border collie watching a sheep move.” Never having owned a four-wheeler, Warren and Mayola used horses for everything on the ranch and having horses who were bred to help with every day ranch work was an immense help. As Mayola began to take a step back from barrel racing, she and Warren started to get more and more involved in team sortings and reined cow horse competitions. In 2010, Mayola and her partner, Gae Selting won the Open Two-Man Sort at the AQHA Region 2 Championship Show in Rapid City at Central States Fairgrounds. Mayola was riding one of their stallions, Taris Hero. Together, the Warren and Mayola were some of the beginning organizers for the South Dakota Reined Cow Horse Association in the early 2000s with Warren serving as one of the directors for several years. Warren also served on the board of directors of the South Dakota Paint Horse Club for several years and together, they showed in many paint horse futurities and rode their stallions in performance classes. They were both show managers for the South Dakota Paint Horse Show at the Central States Fair for many years. Mayola judged the queen contest for the South Dakota
State High School Rodeo and the Custer County 4-H Rodeo Queen contests for several years. Most recently, she was one of the judges for the Black Hills Stock Show Queen contest in 2019. One of the highlights of their lives together was working on the movie, Dances With Wolves, as wranglers for the herd of Indian ponies where they rode with Kevin Costner daily. “Riding with Kevin Costner, he was just another horseman, lots of times riding bareback with us

The competition became so popular and successful, that several different fairs have approached them about patterning their own ranch horse competition after what originated at the Black Hills Stock Show, but Warren and Mayola are most proud that they can say three generations of horsemen and women in their family have competed in the ranch horse competition, themselves, their son and two grandchildren. “There is always team roping and various activities for the going-down-the-road type cowboy, but the ranchers a lot of times get left behind,” Warren says. “That’s the original reason we started the

ranch horse competition was to showcase some of the ranchers in the area.” Ten years ago, when they turned 65, Warren and Mayola decided it was time to take a step back from breeding and starting young horses, and in more recent years, they have passed on the cattle side of the ranch to their son, but they have continued to buy and sell many through the Black Hills Stock Show horse sale because nothing is going to keep the 75-year-old couple out of the saddle. “We’ve done a lot of trail riding with friends even through this pandemic,” Mayola says. “And of course, on the ranch we ride when the kids are working their cattle.” They have a few horses left that they raised, and a few more horses around the ranch who have carried Warren and Mayola many miles, and are now retired and enjoying the good life.

It has been many years since that first horse trade that brought Warren and Mayola together and since then, the couple has worked together to build a quality horse program and served on many boards for the betterment of the South Dakota horse industry. They have raised their children to be horsemen and they have kept the family ranch that has been in their family for over 100 years going strong, and both are equally deserving of receiving the 2021 Horse People of the Year Award.
Ten years ago, the Wests castrated their last stallion when they retired from breeding horses, and now their great grandchildren are riding him.

“We have worked hand in hand,” Warren says. “I have a lot of respect for what she says and I really respected the fact that we were able to work together so well. We want to thank everybody involved in it and we’re sure happy to be a part of the Black Hills Stock Show, it’s been a part of our lives for ongoing 60 years so we are just very proud to be a part of it.”

Justin and Brooke Tupper
Agribusiness OF THE YEAR BY MOLLY JACOBSON
F
or countless U.S. industries, the past year packed a powerful gut punch, and the livestock trade was no exception. But at St. Onge Livestock, Justin Tupper and his family kept moving cattle through the ring just like every other year, doing their best to keep ranchers in the black and the rest of America in burger. It was this commitment to customer service and steadfast support of the ag industry that earned them the Black Hills Stock Show’s 2021 award for Agribusiness of the Year.
80
BLACK HILLS STOCK SHOW & RODEO® 2021
According to BHSS general manager, Ron Jeffries, “St. Onge Livestock and Justin and Brooke Tupper have been long-time supporters of the livestock industry. They volunteer to help with many activities, and sponsor teams for ranch rodeos and calcuttas. They’ve just been a pillar in the ag community in Western South Dakota and the livestock community. Justin also serves on a national livestock advocacy board, donating his time and energy to improve the livestock industry.”

As vice president of the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association, Justin Tupper moonlights as a vocal campaigner for ag in Washington, going to bat for the producer. “I’ve always been a big advocate for the rancher’s side of things,” says Tupper. “We spend a lot of time trying to level the playing field with some of the big four packers and get some strength back to the producer.” Strong advocates like Tupper were even more important this past year, when meat prices went through the roof. For the first time in a long time, Tupper says, the average American is concerned

with where their beef comes from and how it’s processed, and that’s leading to some good conversation among legislators. Even though the Covid-19 pandemic has brought significant challenges to the cattle industry, Tupper explained, it has also drawn attention to the need for policy changes. When he’s not rubbing elbows with politicians, Tupper is head honcho at St. Onge Livestock, where he spends much of his time in the ring and working on the day-to-day tasks of managing the sale barn. Justin and Brooke Tupper have been at St. Onge Livestock since 2007, where they’ve succeeded in making St. Onge a destination facility for producers to unload their annual calf crop.
TRI-STATE LIVESTOCK NEWS
Justin and his son, Cody, have a talk during the sale.
“We’ve worked through a lot of improvements over the years, from upgrading the computer system to rebuilding the yards. We’ve expanded quite a little,” says Tupper. “All of those things just striving to make the experience of the seller better.”
According to a long-time livestock transport representative, “A lot of folks will drive right past other sale barns and take their livestock to St. Onge. The relationships there are just different.”
If their numbers are any indication, the sellers’ experience at St. Onge must be a good one.
Tupper insists that their success is because of their customers: “Without question, it’s all about the people. The cattle market is obviously extremely complex, but it’s really a service business, and you’ve got to take care of your customer and your customer’s animals and be able to get them through in a timely fashion and then strive to get the best price for them.”
“We sell somewhere around 100,000-125,000 cattle through the ring here each and every year and somewhere between 80,000-100,000 sheep through Newell every year,” says Tupper. Not to mention the nearly 15,000 cattle that St. Onge Livestock sells by video annually.

Tupper understands how critical sale day is for the producer: “That’s their one payday for the year, for most of them, so we’ve got to do everything we can to get every dollar we can out of those cattle.” Tupper says that one of his biggest but most rewarding challenges is serving both buyers and sellers. “It’s a delicate balance, what we do. We work hard for the seller, and that’s who pays our commission, who pays our bills here. But we’ve also got to be able to bring in that buyer, make sure this is a place he feels comfortable buying those calves and knowing that we’re going to show him some of the best quality in the country right here in St. Onge.” A self-taught auctioneer who grew up rattling paddles at his father’s sale barn, Tupper says he wouldn’t want to do anything else.
84
BLACK HILLS STOCK SHOW & RODEO® 2021
“There’s no doubt that the sale barn business is kind of all we know, that’s what we’ve done all our life,” he says. “When we can give the customer a good market and they can leave here with a good feeling that they got all they could out of them, I just think that’s the biggest thing we have to strive for. It’s definitely very satisfying when we have a good sale, and we know the market, and we’ve gotten all we can out of those cattle and squeezed every dime out for the producer – that’s a great feeling.” Like most ag businesses, St. Onge Livestock is a family affair. Justin and Brooke have been married for 22 years and all four of their children are involved in the business one way or another. “Our twin daughters, Emily and Maggie, work in the office and help out back some. Taylor sorts

out back and is definitely an integral part of making sure everything runs the way it needs to. Cody helps us auction some; he’s been to auction school and sells a little bit for us in Newell and St. Onge… It’s definitely a family business,” Tupper says.
“St. Onge has been a hub for Wyoming, Montana, and Dakota cattle for a long time. We want to make sure we continue to make it a gateway for western and northern cattle to the feedlots and wheat fields going south.”
About St. Onge Livestock being named “Agribusiness of the Year,” Tupper reiterated that it’s all about their customers: “We’re very excited – it’s definitely a huge honor. We take a lot of pride in trying to take care of the customer and knowing that that’s what drives our business – if we don’t have them as a customer and we can’t treat them the way they need to be, then we won’t have them as a customer.”
Somewhere between “going once…” and “sold!” Tupper manages to find time to support the livestock industry with things like rodeos and auction competitions. It’s businesses like St. Onge Livestock that can take a year like this last one and turn it into a positive opportunity for the livestock industry. That’s the true spirit of ag worth honoring – not just shuffling them through the ring but, like Tupper says, squeezing every last dime out of them.
As to what St. Onge Livestock has planned for the future, Tupper plans to just keep running ‘em through the ring.

ancellations of youth stock shows nationwide in 2020 and projected in 2021 due to COVID-19 leave a void for kids, with nowhere to showcase their hours of work and premium livestock.
In September, the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado announced their cancellation for January 2021, soon followed by Nebraska in Grand Island, Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, Arizona National Livestock Show in Phoenix, and more. The glimmer of hope, though, is that the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo will be hosting the second annual Show-Rite Youth Beef Show in 2021, with the addition of the first Show-Rite Youth Sheep and Goat Show. Marketing and livestock director Amanda Kammerer, says the Black Hills Stock Show had been looking for an opportunity to host a youth show for years. The 4-H Youth Day, held consecutively for many years, gave kids the opportunity to sharpen their livestock judging skills. However, BHSS sought to add something more. Relocating the 2020 BHSS Horse Sale from the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center to the James Kjerstad Events Center opened up the show ring in the Civic Center. This allowed the addition of the inaugural Show-Rite Youth Beef Show in January. “Last year, when the horse sale moved, we had those two empty days at the Civic Center, and that’s where we were able to open up some space and add the youth show to it,” says Kammerer.

When show cancellations seemed to be overwhelming, stock show families reached out to Kammerer to ask about options for an expanded winter show. In October, the BHSS staff decision to repeat last year’s beef show, plus goat and sheep shows. Kammerer says several families inquired about adding breeding heifer and fat steer classes, as well, but it will not be possible this year due to space constraints. It is, however, on the radar for future Black Hills Stock Shows.
families to host their first goat and sheep youth shows. Despite inevitable obstacles, she is confident that this year’s Show-Rite Youth Livestock Shows will be a success. “From a competitor standpoint, I think we’re going to see an increase in numbers. We’re one of the only options, so I think it’ll drive the attendance up,” she says. Last year’s Show-Rite Youth Beef Show was an instant hit, with 100 competitors and over 180 head of beef through the show ring.
Kammerer will rely on her experience with youth shows during the Central States Fair, along with guidance from expert show
The entry deadline for the Youth Show, set in January 22, will help the producers project a number of contestants for efficiency in stalls, space, and time.

One youth is grateful for the opportunity to compete with his livestock. Sage Krebs, a sophomore at Gordon-Rushville High School in Nebraska, has been showing cattle for eight years, alongside his two sisters. In a typical year, the family enters their show cattle at Denver, Hereford Junior Nationals, Charolais Junior Nationals, Fort Worth, and more, attending dozens of shows. “All the cancellations this year have really affected us. At Denver, we usually take multiple pens of Herefords, multiple pens of Charolais, and we’re not able to do that. Those were some of the big ones that we rely on income out of.
Without those, it’s kind of hard to advertise or make any money. It’s been awkward not going anywhere,” Krebs says. He remarks on the opportunity provided by BHSS, “It’s one of the very few that are not going to get cancelled. Opening up the sheep and goat, it’s an opportunity for other kids to show other breeds, where they had not been able to go anywhere… Obviously you can’t make up for hundreds of shows, but it can help make up for what we’ve missed and get some young cattle in the ring.” Krebs’ sisters, Kashlyn (9) and Kinsleigh (10), showed in the youth beef show last year. “They

liked it. They enjoyed being able to show both open and a junior show,” he says. All three siblings are preparing for their few upcoming shows this winter: the Kansas Beef Expo, followed by the Stock Show in Rapid City. Showmanship and breeding heifers will show on Friday, Jan. 29, with steers on Saturday, Jan. 30. The following weekend, Saturday, Feb. 6 will see the sheep show, with goats on Sunday, Feb. 7. In a year full of uncertainty, the highly-anticipated BHSS Show-Rite Youth Livestock Show looks to be a much-needed relief for livestock show families in search of a place to compete.

A
s the Oct. 1, 2021 opening date quickly approaches, the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center’s new arena is beginning to take shape. Craig Baltzer, executive director of the Civic Center, reported that “right now we’re looking very good. We’re running on budget and on time.” While the dry fall and winter might not be good from a moisture standpoint, the mild conditions have helped keep the project on pace. “There are many things going on at once,” Baltzer said. “However, to us, the biggest deal is the long span steel going up as the foundation of the roof. This steel is also the foundation of all concerts and traveling shows, since most shows hang their sound, video, lighting, and sets from the above trusses.” The final main trusses will be placed in the last part of December. Once the long span steel is in place, Baltzer said that smaller steel and panels will be added to the roof to start enclosing the structure. After

the structure is enclosed, work will begin on framing interior walls, plumbing, and wiring. Not only is the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center gaining a new arena, it is also getting a new name. The entire complex will legally be renamed “The Monument” effective the first of July 2021. According to Baltzer, Monument Health purchased the naming rights and plans to update the names of the ice arena and theater as well as giving the new arena a name of its own. “We have been really happy with Monument Health,” Baltzer said. “They want to have the public weigh in on [the new names].” There is currently a public name competition running to name the new arena which will be announced sometime in January. The goal is that the new names be connected with the Black Hills region in some way. Despite the construction, the Black Hills Stock Show events will go on as planned

in the Civic Center for this year. The new arena will be completed in the fall of 2021 which means that the first Stock Show Rodeo in the new arena would take place in 2022. As far as parking for the 2021 show goes, Baltzer said that the construction “won’t affect the general public, but will affect how stock contractors pen up their animals.” In some cases this would mean penning livestock outside. Ron Jefferies, general manager of the Black Hills Stock Show, said that the construction may cause some “shuffling” to make everything work. While the goal is to keep everything on site for this year, Jefferies explained that with less and less space to keep things on site, they may need to start trucking in rodeo stock at some point in the future. As far as rodeo contestants and those showing cattle go, Jefferies recommended sharing trailers whenever possible to help with parking. Official plans for trailer parking are still being worked through and discussed at this time. Along with parking discussions for the 2021 Stock Show, several organizations are also
working through discussions on the best way to use the new arena and the existing Don Barnett arena for future stock shows. Once construction is complete, there will be three connections between the Barnett hall and the new arena, including one connection for audiences to move between the two spaces and another indoor ramp to transport materials or livestock from the back of the Barnett space into the new arena. After the new construction is complete, the existing Barnett Arena will no longer be used as an arena. The Barnett was built prior to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Baltzer explained that it would cost up to $30 million to rework the Barnett seating in order to be compliant with current codes. Because of this, most of the seating will be closed off and used as storage. The Barnett will become a hall or large room with extensive floor space, which opens it up to a plethora of potential uses. Baltzer said that events such as rodeos, trade shows, regional basketball games, or even concerts could still be held in the Barnett as it will have a

capacity of 1,500 seated or 2,200 persons for a standing room only concert. “Growth will take place, it’s just a matter of where that growth will take place,” said Jefferies about the potential to expand the stock show using the new available space. Black Hills Stock Show board of directors member, Jim Hunt said, “There is a lot of excitement in the air,” surrounding the Black Hills Stock Show and its potential for growth. “The amount of space under a roof will be incredible,” he said. He anticipates that the arena will make the Rapid City show one of the

“premier livestock show accommodations.” Hunt also reported that horse show consignments are up for the 2021 show, vendor space has been sold out for months, and that there is a high demand for high quality livestock. Jefferies also alluded to the show’s growth by saying that entries for youth shows and the cattle show are up this year. The stock show has also added sheep and goat youth shows for the 2021 event. “We’re hosting a show that continues to grow,” Jefferies said.

then, he has become one of the top horse trainers and clinicians in South Dakota and throughout the Midwest. Over the past few years, Rodney has instructed many horsemanship clinics and demonstrations for all ages and riding levels. His unique training style and sense of humor has made him a sought after horsemanship clinician throughout the United States and Canada. He is the first and only 4-time champion of the Crosswinds Ranch Colt Training Challenge that is held at Michigan State University every spring, and has won multiple Ranch Horse Colt Futurity competitions. He has become known for creating a relationship with his horses to produce extremely supple, well-mannered, and responsive horses that are capable of many disciplines. Growing up in the heart of cattle country in South Dakota, Rodney developed a love for the land and livestock at an early age. Over the years, this partnership with the ranching lifestyle has blossomed into a progressive mindset regarding his family-owned and operated Broadaxe Ranch, along with its expansive commercial cattle herd, and American Quarter Horse breeding and training program. What started out as a necessity of the Broadaxe Ranch operation, breeding and training their own horses for ranch use, Rodney Yost Horsemanship developed most naturally through many years of on-the-job learning and real life experiences of utilizing horses for
everyday ranch work. For a horseman or horsewoman of any level to have the opportunity of an enjoyable and successful experience while horseback, Rodney believes it is clearly essential to have the correct tools and philosophy to enable all riders the ability to develop a horse that can pull the throttle back to sit, relax, and go slowly at times, while likewise having the ability to step down on the gas pedal when needed in the heat of the action. Horses that have the training, foundation, and ability to make that distinction easily rise to the top and become the cream of the crop in all disciplines. Rodney Yost Horsemanship Demonstrations and Ride-Along Clinics aim to demonstrate, teach, and enable everyone to have a variation of hypothetical tools, a common-sense training mindset, combined with the most elite training techniques. Along with Rodney’s personal learning experiences over the years, Rodney Yost Horsemanship works tirelessly to give all individuals insight regarding the natural instinct, thinking process, and behavior of a horse in an effort to “help the horse to teach itself.”

FCSA CHALLENGE ISSUED TO HIGH SCHOOL RODEO
A
n exciting challenge has been issued by Farm Credit Services of America to the 20X High School Rodeo Team.
When the team members compete in 20X High School Rodeo at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City, SD, they will be competing for much more than the firstplace buckle. If they can meet or exceed the set challenge scores, they can win for their national team, $100 per each of the 10 scheduled events for a total of $1000. This money will be donated by Farm Credit of Services of America to the South Dakota High School Rodeo Association to be used by the National Team members for travel expenses at the National High School Rodeo Finals. “The Farm Credit Services challenge is a very generous contribution to South Dakota’s best rodeo athletes, and it will add additional excitement to the already thrilling rodeo,” according to Ann Sundermann, Executive Secretary of SDHSRA. After reviewing the records from the past five years of 20X High School Rodeo performances, the time or marking that has been set would have been reached in each event 50% of the time. Here are the markings or times that would need to be met or exceeded for the SDHSRA to obtain the funds.

A
born and bred South Dakotan took home the James Sutton Sr. Memorial honor at the 2020 Rodeo Rapid City.
Shorty Garrett, Eagle Butte, S.D., rode Sutton Rodeo’s South Point for 90.5 points and a pocketful of cash. The nearly $5,000 he won was nice padding for a trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, where he finished the 2020 season tenth in the world and won over $18,000. The 28-year-old cowboy comes from a rich rodeo heritage.
The son of Juan and Johnilyn Garrett, his uncles are Mark and Marvin Garrett, who have a combined five world titles. His half-brother, J.D. Garrett, made the Finals in the bareback riding, and an uncle on his mom’s side, T.C. Holloway, qualified for the NFR in the saddle bronc riding in 2000. His brother-inlaw, Chason Floyd, steer wrestled at the Finals in 2018, and another uncle, Chuck Holloway, served as pickup man there. Garrett didn’t start his rodeo career as a saddle bronc rider.

His granddad, Johnny Holloway, had a strict rule: no bronc riding till his kids and grandkids weighed 100 lbs. And for Shorty, that took until his senior year of high school. “I graduated high school at 103 lbs. and I was five foot two,” he said. By the time he finished his first semester of college, he had grown six inches and added ten pounds. In high school rodeo, he focused on bull riding and team roping, and it was the bull riding that paid his way in the South Dakota Rodeo Association and other regional rodeos. He competed collegiately at Casper (Wyo.) College, but never made the College National Finals Rodeo. On the last bull that would have qualified him for the College Finals, he bucked off, and that’s when he decided to quit riding bulls. “The bronc riding was just starting to click, and I was having way more fun with it. The bull riding was just there. And if you don’t crave riding bulls, it’s not going to be a good outcome.”
Garrett got his PRCA permit in 2013 and his card a year later. Last year he had his best pro rodeo season ever, qualifying for his first Wrangler NFR. His 2020 winter went well. Not only did he win Rodeo Rapid City, but he won or split the win in the three rounds of his bracket in San Antonio and tied for second in the short round. He did well at Ft. Worth and Houston as well. And the summer rolled along, too. “I was having so much fun I didn’t worry about what rodeo we were at,” he said. “It was clicking.” He lives and ranches on his granddad Johnny’s place, where he lived as a youngster. Shorty is the second-born, with an older sister, Jesika Floyd, and younger sisters Juan’L and Shamra. Growing up with three sisters was “tough,” he said. “I have three of the best sisters a guy could have,” he said, “but it wasn’t that way when we were little. I got ganged up on all the time.”

The James Sutton Sr. Memorial bronze is given to the winner of the saddle bronc riding at Rodeo Rapid City, who lives in or was born in South Dakota. It is in honor of the many outstanding bronc riders from the state. PHOTO COURTESY KIM SUTTON.
He’s engaged to Alex Bush, from Belle Fourche, with a wedding day planned for May of this year. They’ve known each other since they were kids, and she’s a no-fuss, low-drama kind of woman. “She’s pretty easy to please,” Garrett said. The James Sutton, Sr. Memorial Bronze came into being in 1992, to honor Sutton, Sr., who passed away in January of 1991, and in honor of the many outstanding saddle bronc riders from South Dakota. A bronze is given to the saddle bronc winner of Rodeo Rapid City if he was born in or lives in South Dakota. The first year it was given, it went to the three Etbauer brothers: Robert, Dan and Billy, for their overall contributions to the sport of rodeo. Past recipients include Jesse Bail (2002); Jeffrey Willert (2003); Jake Costello (2005); JJ Elshere (2007); Ty Kennedy (2009); Cole Elshere (2012); Jeremy Meeks (2013); Garrett in 2017, and Ty Manke (2019). The award can be won multiple times, but the bronze is only awarded once. Garrett loves his. “I’ve never won a bronze before,” he said, “and I’ve always wanted that bronze. Anytime you can win a prize like that, it’s pretty neat.”

The piece was sculpted by Spearfish, S.D. artist Tony Chytka and it depicts John McBeth, a long-time friend of Sutton, Sr. and a world champion saddle bronc rider, on the horse Half Velvet, who bucked at the Finals. Half Velvet, who only had one eye, was a money horse, said Steve Sutton, James Sr.’s grandson. “You won the money if you had his number for the draw,” he said. “You couldn’t hardly mess him up.” He bucked under several other names, including Indian Sign, Coors Lite, and One-Eyed Skoal. The memorial has a matching piece that is half-lifesized. For years, the statue stood outside of the host hotel for the Rapid City rodeo, and during the rodeo and stock show, Steve Sutton would move it to the building. It took four men to lift it, and after many years, he decided it belonged in front of his and Kim’s house, where it sits now. Rodeo Rapid City will take place Jan. 29-Feb. 6 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. For more information on the rodeo, visit www.suttonrodeo.com.

The award can only be won one time and to win you must have either been born or live in the state of SD. HISTORY T
he history of Sutton Rodeo Company parallels the growth and development of rodeo for nearly the entire 20th century and beyond. In 1926, the Edwin Sutton family began producing their own rodeos on the home ranch in Sully County. Originally the rodeo was just a pleasant pastime when a group of people got together on a Sunday. However, Edwin saw a possibility for profit and joined with George Fairbank to begin a touring rodeo. The Depression shut down the productions and they did not begin again until the mid-40s. James H. Sutton, Sr. took Sutton Rodeo to the next stage in the 1950s when he entered a partnership with Erv Korkow. As one of the first members of the RCA, Sutton/Korkow stock performed at the first National Finals Rodeo at Dallas, Texas in 1959. The Company won Bull of the Year with “Baldy” in 1961 and had Reserve Champion horses “Snake River” in 1962 and “Yellow Jacket” in 1964. James was the first Stock Contractor to be inducted in the PRCA Hall of Champions in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1982.

wayne brooks PRCA ANNOUNCER As a PRCA announcer, Wayne Brooks brings a fresh enthusiasm to the sport enjoyed by thousands across the nation. Like many announcers, his rodeo career began in the arena as a contestant. While competing in the rough stock events, he gained an insight into the sport-which he presents to the audience to make them truly a part of each performance. His broadcasting background has proven invaluable in rodeo promotion and sponsor recognition. Combining these experiences, Wayne creates an announcing style that is both informative and entertaining. Whether it’s wild and western or polished and professional, it’s excitement at its best!
A PRCA member since 1994, Wayne had the honor of being chosen as the 2005, 2010, 2013, 2014 & 2016 PRCA Announcer of the Year, with nine additional nominations in this category. Wayne was selected as one of the announcers at the Wrangler National Finals in 2005, 2013-2019 after making his NFSR debut in 2000 with the legendary Clem McSpadden. He has announced the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Pocatello, Idaho, three times and the Pace Picante ProRodeo Chute-Out five times. Wayne has been the voice at the Canadian Finals Rodeo for the past eight years, as well as the Indian Nationals Finals five times. His resume also includes finals in the Mountain States, Turquoise, Columbia River, and Wilderness Circuits. He announces other such respected rodeos as the Calgary Stampede, Reno Rodeo, Pendleton Roundup, California Rodeo Salinas, Rodeo Austin, Red Bluff Roundup, Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo, and the Clovis Rodeo. Though he was born in Prescott, Arizona, he was reared on the ranchlands of Wyoming and Colorado. He believes it was this raising that instilled in him the importance of preserving the heritage of the West. He continues to give credence to the mystique of being Western at each performance he announces. He believes “”being involved in rodeo has provided me the opportunityto do what I enjoy. It’s the people that make a difference-and rodeo has the best”. When he’s not announcing rodeos, Wayne serves as a commercial voice talent. He and his wife, Melanie, have two daughters, Taylor and Sheridan, and a son, Ace. Although they travel across the United States and Canada, they make their home in Lampasas, Texas.

Will Rasmussen PRCA ANNOUNCER
Will Rasmussen announces some of the biggest and best Professional rodeos in the United States. He has been chosen to announce the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo four times, the Montana Circuit Finals Rodeo nineteen times and announced the first ever Wrangler Champions Challenge in Redding, CA. He was chosen to host the Cowboy Corral show at the Thomas and Mack in Las Vegas during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo by Las Vegas Events. Will has been nominated for PRCA Announcer of the Year in 2018, 2019,2020. A smooth, easy-listening voice, solid knowledge of rodeo and a style that is both entertaining and informative are the mix of elements that make him one of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s most popular rodeo announcers. The Choteau, Montana native’s love of rodeo stems from his experience as the oldest child of the “Rodeoing Rasmussens”, a family in which just about everyone was involved in the sport of
rodeo and recently inducted into Montana’s Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. His mother was a timer and his father an announcer. One brother is a competitor, while his youngest Flint is an eight time PRCA Clown of the Year. Rasmussen says the thrill of announcing rodeos never gets old. “It’s a great reward to have thousands of people to respond positively to something that’s happened and to know you helped that along,” Rasmussen says. Rasmussen’s trademark is his enthusiasm for the sport and his ability to involve the entire audience in each of the rodeo events. His commentary is down-to-earth, sprinkled with rodeo facts and trivia that make the show understandable and enjoyable for veteran fans and first-time enthusiasts. “My job is to educate the folks that want to learn about the sport and to inform the folks that are already educated….and to entertain everyone!!”.

Growing up on the East Coast in Woodstown, New Jersey, Professional Rodeo Music Director Jake Ostrum’s love of America’s original sport of rodeo began at a young age. One would think Rodeo would be hard to find in New Jersey, but Jake lived only 1 mile from the longest running weekly PRCA Rodeo in the country, the legendary Cowtown Pro Rodeo. It was at Cowtown where he spent his Saturday nights, every summer, for as long as he can remember. Jake has been a part of pretty much every aspect of rodeo from announcing to actually producing his own rodeo events. However, his heart kept bringing him back to his true passion of music. Jake’s talent with musical instruments took him across the country, and even to LA for two years, but he realized his true Calling was a different kind of

music on a different kind of stage, an arena. He began his professional rodeo career in 2010 as a music director and has since built a library of music of every genre that is second to none. He spends countless hours refining his play list and cutting the perfect songs so that he can set the tone before, during, and after a rodeo. His songs and his ability to know just when to play them provides a level of entertainment that has been en-joyed around the PRO Rodeo world at events like The New Mexico State Fair & Rodeo, Kansas Largest Night Rodeo, and Rodeo Rapid City just to name a few. He has even been selected the last three years as the music director for the PRCA First Frontier Circuit Finals Rodeo. Sit back, relax, and be prepared to be taken on a musical journey from Hello to Happy Trails.

justin rumford PRCA BARRELMAN
The only difference between Justin Rumford and a stand-up comedian, is that he’s doing his job from the middle of a rodeo arena instead of a stage with a spotlight. Rumford, who lives in Ponca City, Okla., is a rodeo clown at events from coast to coast. His job during the rodeo is twofold. He provides the laughs and banters with the announcer. But during the bull riding his more dangerous job begins. Rumford is a barrelman: the cowboy who works the barrel, providing an oasis of safety for bullfighters and bull riders, in case an angry bull decides to chase them. Rumford grew up in a rodeo family and competed in junior high, high school and college rodeo. He was a full time steer wrestler, but then blew out his knee. While he recovered, he worked as an assistant rodeo coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. After his knee healed, he helped with the Cody (Wyo.) Night Rodeo for three seasons, then began as a livestock

truck driver for North Platte’s stock contractor, Bennie Beutler of Beutler and Son Rodeo. He never considered being a full time rodeo clown, but after a few tries as clown, he changed his mind. “I worked the Pretty Prairie (Kan.) bull riding, and they gave me a good check And I thought, why the heck am I working so hard for not much a week when I can make more than that in a night? So I jumped ship for the clown life.” And lucky for rodeo fans, Rumford is still clowning, and winning honors at it. In 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, he’s been honored as the PRCA’s Clown of the Year. The award is voted on by his peers and rodeo committees, and Justin is humbled to get it. “I don’t know if I deserve it, but I’m fortunate to accept it. It’s unbelievable.” In September of 2013, he and his wife Ashley became the parents of triplets, daughters Livi and Lola, and a son, Bandy. “I have a 44 foot trailer,” he said, “and I can bring the whole family with me.”

Justin Sportsmedicine Team Offers Rodeo Contestants Comprehensive Medical Care When the Justin Sportsmedicine Team is at a rodeo, contestants know they will be treated as professional athletes and have the finest medical care available. They know that any nagging injuries, bumps, and bruises will be given the attention necessary to keep them competing with the best available resources for injury prevention. In the event of an injury, these contestants rest assured that it will be treated comprehensively with the mission of getting them back in the arena as quickly as possible. That is exactly what the program was designed to do over 35 years ago when it was founded and funded by the Justin Boot Company and started at just 10 rodeos as the official healthcare provider of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). In 2019, the Justin Sportsmedicine Team traveled coast to coast providing services to over 125 rodeos covering 562 performances. Throughout the year, they provided 8,348 treatments while recording over 1,500 new injuries. Essentially this equates to one and a half tons of ice, over 200 miles of tape, and 3,000 hours of service. The success of the Justin Sportsmedicine Team can easily be measured by the reduction in occurrence and severity of injuries. Rodeo athletes are educated on injury prevention, but injuries are a fact of life in the arena. Preventing those injuries and then treating them when they do occur is the core of the program. It means contestants can be more competitive as they return to competition after injury. This is very important to their livelihoods because they need to compete at a high level, to make a living. At the 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) almost half of the 120 contestants, and additional WNFR contract personnel and staff, received care totaling 792 treatments. There were 62 new injuries and illnesses recorded. These numbers,
140
BLACK HILLS STOCK SHOW & RODEO® 2021
as well as keeping the rodeo athletes competing over 10 days straight at the most physically demanding sport in the world, confirms the value and necessity of the Justin Sportsmedicine Team. 2019 PRCA World Champion and 6 time PRCA World Champion bull rider Sage Kimzey states, “The Justin Sportsmedicine Team is more important to us rodeo athletes than anyone can explain. There is absolutely no way that us professional rodeo cowboys could do what we do without the knowledge and assistance of the Justin Sportsmedicine Team.” 3 time PRCA World Champion bareback rider Tim O’Connell states, “…they are a special group that makes modern day rodeo possible, they are truly a blessing to our sport as they prepare us to compete”. While the Justin Sportsmedicine Team utilizes full-time staff with a variety of medical backgrounds, they rely on local volunteers to make it successful. “Coordinating our program with local medical physicians and clinicians is an integral part in our team’s success,” said Rick Foster, director for the Justin Sportsmedicine Team. “First of all, it gives us the opportunity to provide the type of healthcare these rodeo contestants need. Then in the case of an injury, we already know where to send them locally and have medical personnel that have relationships in the community. It makes it so much easier for the contestants and helps us provide the quality care so deserving to our rodeo athletes.” Customized injury-reporting software is used to give accurate exchange of information regarding treatments and injuries. It also allows for the team to research and evaluate injury information within rodeo. Any member of the team in each event location can follow up on injured athlete’s needs and proper care.
TRI-STATE LIVESTOCK NEWS
“We have definitely seen a decrease in the occurrence and severity of injuries,” said Mike Rich, executive director of the Justin Sportsmedicine Team. “We’ve also had an increase in the number of treatments that we are providing. This tells us more contestants are utilizing the program with greater benefits.” “We have built relationships with the local medical community, committee members, and the contestants that are long standing,” added Rich who took over the program eleven years ago. “This program has many parts and without each one of those parts we wouldn’t have seen the growth or success that we have had.” Rodeo contestants pay to compete, and in order to earn any money in the arena they must be healthy. In the event of a serious injury, incomes can be dramatically affected. That is where the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund (JCCF) steps in. The charitable organization provides 100% of all contributions for use by injured contestants to help them pay their bills until they can be competitive again. The JCCF can do this because all administrative costs are paid by the Justin Boot Company and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. “The two organizations work hand-in-hand,” Foster said. “In the event of an injury, we can help them with their medical needs and get them back in the arena as quickly and safely as possible. The Crisis Fund helps them pay their bills and take some of their worries away. Both programs show how much Justin Boots cares about the people involved in rodeo.”
