McNamee Angus Ranch 33rd Annual Bull Sale

Page 1

Welcome to our 33rd annual bull sale. We again welcome Cook Angus to the sale. Our similar breeding philosophies, genetics, and management make us a natural fit and it’s a pleasure working with them. This will be our second year offering two-year-old bulls. These bulls were held back last year and have not been offered for sale before. They were fed the same as the bulls we sold last spring, but they wintered out in a big pasture and then ran on grass since last spring. They are still out in a section pasture as I’m writing this and are being fed Muggli cake and free choice hay. They look good and are ready to roll into anyone’s wintering program. All of these bulls are virgin except a couple we used on our heifers last year. They are marked and have been trich tested. We are also selling yearling bulls that are suitable for use on heifers. These bulls will not have been semen tested as of sale day because of their age. We will winter them at no cost to the buyer, and semen test them in April before we deliver them. If one of these bulls happens to fail that semen test, we will replace him with another bull of equal or greater value from the 70 head of bulls kept to be sold as 2’s next year, or you will be given credit at next year’s bull sale. We’re still using the star rating for calving ease. 4 star bulls are what we consider sleep all night calving ease bulls. The 3 star bulls may give you a little more at birth and possibly a little more weight at weaning time. We decided to offer several bred females this year as well. We have eight short term, registered cows, bred to our own bulls, for sale. These cows have proven themselves in our operation year after year. We have sold sons of theirs, used sons of theirs and each have several daughters in production here. These cows have held up well in our program. They are scheduled to start calving around April 10th, and their calves have been sexed. We are also selling a package of home raised, bred three-year-old cows. These cows all raised a calf successfully last year, and are bred back in the first or second cycle for calving this spring. Again, calving start date is approximately April 10th. There are ten F1 baldy cows bred to McNamee Angus Ranch bulls. The remaining 40 head are purebred Angus cows bred to Sparks Hereford bulls. All calves have been sexed. We’ll be offering two well started, young ranch geldings. Both are three-year-olds from the Buffington Performance Ranch Horse program. Videos of the bulls, bred cows and the horses are available through Tristate Livestock News. We’ll be serving coffee and food in our heated shop all day so come and spend the day. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask any one of us. Thank you for your support and interest in these bulls and our program.

EPD’s

Any yearling Angus animal’s EPD’s are interim since they obviously have no offspring yet. Those interim EPD’s are figured by the American Angus Association and are basically 50% the sires EPDs and 50% the dams with slight adjustments up or down for their actual birth and weaning weights. Our benevolent Angus Association has always given an interim EPD when we reported our calves for performance data. However, the board of directors decided that an interim EPD was a benefit of registration and unless you registered these calves, you would not get an EPD for them. The bottom line is too many people were not registering their AI calves because of the cost of the AI certificates. The breeders that sell the certificates were not getting any money when this happened. An AI certificate must accompany every calf that is the product of AI when they are registered. The Angus Association gets $10 for each AI certificate and the owner(s) of the bull usually gets anywhere from $10 to as much as $10,000 per certificate, I’ve heard. The cost is determined by the owner(s) of the bull. This really hurts us as we can’t register our calves early because we don’t collect the DNA information until we wean, and the later you register, the more it costs to do so. If I register late, it will cost me either $14 or $27 per head depending on when I get the DNA information back. What these directors don’t understand though, is they sold me a computer program that figures all the performance data (ratios). Interim EPD’s are not that hard to figure, so, the EPD’s on all of these bulls are 50% the sire’s EPD’s and 50% the dam’s and are not figured by the American Angus Association. All bulls except those marked as commercial are eligible for registration but will be sold without registration papers. If you have to have papers for programs like Angus Source, I will gladly register the bulls for you. If you are a registered breeder buying a bull to clean up on a bunch of AI’ed cows, and want to dabble in these genetics, I will NOT register those bulls. No offense to anyone, but I don’t like watching my good commercial buyers compete for bulls with that type of buyer. I’d much rather see the bulls go where they will do the most good. I also believe the value of these bulls should be set by what they will contribute genetically, and not based on the latest fad or the rarity of the genetics. We are raising bulls for the commercial industry, and have no desire to be part of the mainstream bull-of-the-month club, seedstock industry. We sell semen if you want to dabble.

Inbred Regression

Inbred regression in my opinion is about as misused a phrase as government intelligence. Inbreeding will expose problems in a particular animal, not create them. Inbreeding the right animal will likewise emphasize that animal’s good qualities. Too many times, problems exposed when inbreeding gets laid at the feet of inbreeding when the real problem was the animal that was inbred. You can’t make a thoroughbred out of horse shit. We’ve been inbreeding/line breeding 1116 for 12 years now and the cattle just continue to get better. By better we mean better as a group and not just better individuals. Better as in consistency of the type that suits our needs, both from a management and an environment stand point. All of this is not by chance either. 1116’s breeding was created by better breeders than us who believed in this very same philosophy, generations ago. You see it all the time in nature. Animals that come back from the brink of extinction. Think how inbred they must be. If inbred regression played as large of a role as some would like you to believe, Bald Eagles should be the size of pigeons and the wolves in Yellowstone Park would look like scrawny coyotes chasing bison around that were the size of sheep. 2

McNAMEE FOUNDATION BULLS

1116

1116 We usually lead off our herd sires with 7013, but as good as 7013 was, we have really bred his sire 1116, more through four different sons: 7013, 6936, 6141, and 6916. We have also kept and used numerous grandsons and great grandsons of his. To our way of thinking, 1116 will go down as the most influential bull we’ve used in our 30+ years breeding cattle. He was bred and raised by Dennis and Erica Voss of Horse Butte Ranch. In 1116, we have been able to find cattle that do so many thing013’s best preforming sons well for us. From the beautifully maternal females that last in our environment and under our management, to the functional, masculine males that get out and work to get cows bred, we have seen success on both ends. We will continue to fold 1116 into our breeding program. Thank you, Dennis and Erica Voss, for sharing the genetics of 1116 with us. He is your life time of work and experience, and we don’t take being able to benefit from the use of him lightly.

His mother was phenotypically right in every way, and was one of the most attentive mothers as a heifer we’ve ever had. You never saw her where she didn’t have that calf with her. Out of a first calf heifer. She had him on her own but probably a little more performance than I’d want in a heifer bull. 700 lb. weaning wt. bulls out of first calf heifers usually don’t make calving ease bulls. Not here anyway.

The 6936 daughters are such good mothers. The mother to this bull calved on the crappiest stretch of weather we had this spring. She stayed with that calf, off by herself, for three days till the weather broke before she came to feed or water. There’s more to maternal than weaning big calves.

A son of the 947 cow that sells as one of the mature cows.

Welcome to the McNamee Angus 33rd Annual Bull Sale. Again, the friendship of Jack and his entire family has been amazing. We truly appreciate the opportunity to participate in their sale. We remain focused on our goals; raise a maternal mother cow that produces a good calf every year with minimal inputs adding profitability to our ranch. Thus, providing consistent quality genetics and cattle to our valued customers. Ending with profitability. The coming two year old bulls were summered on grass, with free choice salt and mineral. Since December they have been running in a section pasture hit by drought and hoppers, so they have been getting 5 pound’s DDG’s every other day since Christmas with some grass hay every third day. The two year old’s passed Dr. Cal’s semen test and fertility evaluation on Jan 11th and were poured. All are virgin bulls except for two which we used on our heifers and cows. These two will have also passed a Trich test. The two year old bulls can be hauled home sale day for a discount or we will deliver right after the sale. Yearling bulls are being wintered at the ranch. As in the past, being fed CHS Bull Challenger pellets, chopped hay, 2 pounds DDG’s and Flax Lick tubs. Bulls had branding and preconditioning shots, poured in December. Yearling bulls have not been semen tested due to their age. We will winter them at no cost to the buyer, and semen test them in April before we deliver them. If one of these bulls happens to fail that semen test, we will replace him with another bull of equal or greater value from the bulls kept to be sold as 2’s next year, or you will be given credit at next year’s bull sale.

We are following McNamee’s star rating for calving ease.

Our program is consistent. Cattle graze on native and improved pastures, with free choice salt and mineral year round. No creep or supplement. Cows are fed DDG’s and hay as needed in winter. As Jack say’s “you can’t starve a profit out of a cow”. The registered and commercial cows run together with the exception at breeding. We line breed, producing cattle that are predictable and consistent. We focus on a structurally correct, moderate cow that has a live calf, savvy mothering ability to raise that calf, with an appreciative disposition. We do not waiver our core values for open, hard keeping, poor udder, high headed cows. We want cows that stay in the herd for a long time, return like kind and are profitable. You will notice several Dams and Grandams of sale bulls are still actively producing at 10 plus years old. The EPD’s on our bulls are estimations, formulated using sire and dam EPD’s. We emphasize functional and economical traits rather than chasing numbers. The bulls have not been registered, if you need a bull registered let us know and we will register at our cost, except those marked as commercial. Cook Angus retains half semen interest in all bulls selling. We look forward to 2021 being better in timely moisture, less hoppers and more time with friends and family. We would like to thank everyone for your continued support and prayers.

If you have any questions or want to know more about our program, please do not hesitate to contact us. Cole, Lindsey, Caitlyn, and Carly Cook CELL (406) 951-1564 RANCH (406) 477-8626 cjcook84@hotmail.com

“936” is a bull we bought from Jack to use on heifers. Used him two years on heifers, liked what he sired, so turned him on cows last 2 years. Just what you expect from lined-up McNamee bull, smart prolific breeder, sires even, consistent calves. Last year we keep him back a couple of weeks at turn out time. Next thing we know he swam Rosebud creek and crawled a fence to find his cows. Would say he has high libido.

“248” is a Bull we purchased from Ryan Neiman to use on our OCC bred cattle. He expresses the OCC thickness, depth, natural fleshing ability, with above average length of rib and spine. His sire group is an even, consistent set of calves. His daughters have enough femininity and length, while his sons are thick, deep, and long. Coming 7 this year, still 100% sound and will be used natural sire again.

“767” is a home raised bull. Sired by our OCC General bull “248” out of a nice young cow. He follows the OCC type of cattle we breed for: Clean fronted, deep, natural thickness, with extra length of rib. We have used this bull for the past two years.

“50U” A bull we purchased from Diamond D Angus 2019. 50U was turned out with our yearling heifers. Calving ease was exceptional and his calves have been impressive. We have started feeding our bred heifers just before dark and check them at daylight. Everything worked out last year, the only time we touched a calf was to tag and weigh them. 50U is a very clean made bull with enough depth of rib, length, good stifle, tight sheathed, and excellent feet. We are very pleased with this bull.

We really like this bull, phenotypically and genotypically. Could have turned this bull out with our registered cows last year, decided to heavily use his sire. Out of a 3 year old cow, who past all the tests of drought and hoppers in 2020.

Might have saved the best for last with this guy. This bull has the depth of rib, natural thickness, and stretch, making a complete balanced bull. This is a good bull.

Nice thick made bull. The “248” General bull is coming 7, still sound, solid and active. He has done a good job for us.

X V

Here is a deep, long, flat top, thick bull with lots of eye appeal.

***Calving ease. 6936 is a bull we purchased from McNamee’s in 2017. We used the bull on heifers for two years. Liked him and his calves so well have used him the past 2 years on cows. We feel this bull could do the same.

This bull is a true standout son of “248”. He has the depth, length and natural thickness to sire some outstanding steer calves, while leaving heifers that make functional range cows.

McNAMEE REGISTERED COWS These cows have been here for 10 years or longer and have raised a calf every year or they would’ve been gone. We rate these cows for udder, tailhead, and disposition every year when they calve. They’ve passed every test we required of them. They’ve been good ole cows and with a little pampering they’ll produce for a few more years. If you can use them fine, if not we’ll be happy to see another calf or two out of them.

Cow Exposed to CR Horsebutte 165 of 1116. Bought five bred cows from Harrison O’Connner, Geyser Mt. back in 2006. Hence the birth date and short ears of this cow. She turned out to be a queen. Has produced a good one every year. Kept every daughter and sold or used most of her bull calves. We should have flushed this cow.

Cow exposed to C A GENERAL 307 OF 4248 or NCC GENERAL 4248. Another daughter of the Saddle Butte cows from O’Conner in 2006. They were good cows. Dam of Lot W702 in the 2 year old sale.

Cow exposed to C A GENERAL 307 OF 4248 or NCC GENERAL 4248. If we were to stock a ranch, I’d take a thousand cows like this one. She does everything right. She has raised 12 calves with all of them either being sold as bulls or kept as replacement females. Six daughters have gone back into our herd from this great cow. Dam of lot O707 in the 2 year old’s sale, with another bull calf in the pen at home.

McNAMEE THREE YEAR OLD COWS Claire and I are really proud of this set of cows. Our purebred cow numbers have gotten as high as we’d like, so we’ve decided to breed and calve all our heifers except the tailenders, keep what we need to maintain our purebred numbers, and sell the rest as bred three year olds. We’ll sell them in lots of ten. High bidder will be able to take the pick of any or all lots. These cows are cake broke and used to being handled horseback. They’ve been poured for lice, vaccinated with Vira shield 4 +VL5, and they’ve always been on Vita Ferm Concept Aid 10 mineral. Lot 1 10 Black cows bred to Hereford bulls with bull calves in them. Lot 2 10 Black cows bred to Hereford bulls with bull calves in them. Lot 3 10 Black cows bred to Hereford bulls with heifer calves in them. Lot 4 10 Black cows bred to Hereford bulls with heifer calves in them. Lot 5 10 F1 Baldy cows bred to Angus bulls. 5 have bull calves in them and 5 have heifer calves in them.

SHINY TRIGGER

is now standing at McNamee Angus Ranch. We are about to welcome our 8th colt crop out of Trigger and couldn’t be more pleased with his offspring thus far. He has no doubt stamped them with his good confirmation and amazing disposition. Trigger is the kind of horse you can ride all day and get your job done on and at the same token our 6 year old daughter gets along great with him too. Trigger will be available for viewing sale day at the ranch and we are excited to offer his offspring during the Bull Sale in coming years!

38

Sawyer is a beautiful palomino gelding and a full brother to the nice gelding we sold last year at the bull sale. He is gentle and has a great mind, that is our favorite part of these colts out of Trigger, every one of them seems to have his mind! This colt is a quick learner and wants to please, he is going to be just the right size to do anything you need on the ranch or in the arena. I will keep Sawyer for 2 months and ride him through calving time at no charge if the new buyer wants to go that route. I will not charge anything for this, but would request the buyer insure him. Call Spike for more information 406-853-4629 or 406-421-5623.

39

Gunner is a gorgeous roan gelding with a sweet disposition and a willingness to please, he is gentle and doesn’t get rattled by much of anything. He is put together right with good bone and is going to make a great using horse whatever direction you want to go with him. As with the other gelding, I will keep Gunner and ride him through calving if the new buyer requests. I will not charge anything for this, but would request the buyer insure him. Call Spike for more information 406-853-4629 or 406-421-5623.
