We sold 555 cattle all being weigh up cattle that sold on a $5.00-$12.00 higher market on certain grades of cows. Fat fed cows sold steady. Lean cows and bulls were a lot higher. Packers are short bought of product, with meat counters running low, therefore the producer is finally getting paid a boost on their side of marketing. Good product deserves a fair price. All cows sold by 12:45. Good job work crew. Thanks to buyers and sellers. Check website or DTN for updates. Please bring weigh up cattle in on Friday. Had a decent run of weighups, 6 weighup buyers on the seats. Cow market was several dollars higher. Must be due to the fact the stores can’t stock the meat case fast enough. The only fat cattle bids I heard today were around $1.10 live. USDA reports $1.63 per lb. live equivalent of gross packer revenue. That is a $53 per hundred price spread. That equals $795 per head gross profit on 1500 lb. fat cattle for the packer. This means that during the Coronavirus pandemic, the consumer is paying near record prices for beef while the packer is stealing the fat cattle from the US producer. I want to thank Senator Rounds for taking the lead on writing a letter to President Trump asking to reimplement Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling (MCOOL) on meat as well as requesting the Department of Justice to immediately start an investigation into the packing industry. I would ask all cattle producers & cattle feeders to join together and request that their congressional delegates sign on with Senator Rounds’ letters. I would also like all South Dakota producers & feeders to request Senator Thune and Representative Johnson to join with Senator Rounds by signing on these letters.
