Olive Oil: To Ozonated or Not? Olive oil borders on a miracle food, and should certainly be classified as a superfood. It has so many positive benefits, that this article would be 10+ pages long if we were to list them. Instead, we’ll just give you one fact that should show you just how important it is: people that consume olive oil regularly have a longer lifespan than those who don’t. In fact, Jeanne Calment – the oldest living person in history, who died at 122 – rubbed olive oil into her skin every day. There’s no doubt about its health giving properties. People that eat a lot of olive oil look younger, feel fitter, and have generally improved sense of wellbeing. However, there is a new technique on the market that is used to make ozonated olive oil. This is a maxed-up version of olive oil that enhances its positive effects. Generally, ozonated olive oil is not used it cooking. Therefore, to offer a partial answer to the question in the title, if you are using it in cooking, you should not buy the ozonated variety. Instead, you need normal, off-the-shelf oil.

Ozonated olive oil is a health supplement. It is made using normal olive oil (although it is important to use extra-virgin and organic oil if you want to produce a high-quality health supplement). To make this product, the manufactures use a special process of imbibing the oil with ozone (ozone is different to normal oxygen because it contains an extra oxygen atom). This requires specialist equipment, and isn’t something that you can easily do at home. OK, so on to the question: why do people use ozonated olive oil? As a supplement, it is particularly used for skin ailments. People use it for a wide range of symptoms and issues, including: • •

• • •

Eczema (do make sure that you test the area firsts, as you might react differently to other people). Cuts and grazes – many people report a faster healing time when using this product. It also helps to create a protective barrier between the wound and the outside environment. Helps to reduce the effects of scarring – some people use it on old scars too, with some success. Great for rubbing on insect stings, sunburn, and bites – it helps to reduce itching and inflammation. Many women swear by its use for reducing wrinkles and the other sign of aging (remember what we said earlier about Jeanne Calment?).

If you're thinking of buying ozonated oil, then make sure that you buy it from a repeatable manufacturer. The additional oxygen atom can lead to contamination as it can damage the equipment that then gets into the oil. The reason for this is the instability of ozone. It has an extra atom and it wants to balance this by stealing from other elements. If the equipment is low quality, it will be easy to damage.
