T

his time of the year is known to be ladies’ month, from international women day to mother’s day. Let’s tackle it from another perspective; it is not a must to be for mothers. It could be for the people whom you share life with.

It is important to tell people who you love how much you appreciate their presence in your life. Do not leave your emotions covered until a special event arrives in order to speak up and tell your beloved ones how much you love them. Use every moment and situation to let them know how you appreciate having them on board during your life journey. Make every day counts in any relationship you have with anybody, parents, family, spouse, friends, or even work-colleagues. Since we all suffer from the extremely active pace of life, it is nice to always aim to add an act of kindness with people we meet on our daily basis, even randomly. The moment you succeed to spread positive and appreciative vibes for everyone who crosses your way, the moment where you will feel fulfilled and happy. Because no matter how small a kind action we make it comes back to us with satisfaction, happiness, and leaves us at peace.

GROOMING- SKIN

7 STEPS TO GET HEALTHY SKIN

H

ave you ever found yourself wondering, “Why my skin looks dull?” You may be facing some troubles with acnes, bumps, or blemishes popping out all over your face. Since every gentleman loves to look neat and well groomed; may be it the time where you should reconsider your perception of the skin care, because the right skin care requires a scientific approach.Prior to speaking about any tips, it is crucial that you visit the dermatologist at the very beginning in order to identify the root cause, recognize your skin type, and thus, take the appropriate action. Upon understanding and fixing the major issues here comes the guide turn.

• INVEST IN THE RIGHT FACIAL WASH: A good cleanser that is compatible to your skin type is always the foundation. Facial washes are known to help in getting rid of impurities and dead skin cells that stick together and make your face look dull. Here is why it should be applied twice a day, morning and night. If you would like to try out deep cleansing then give a good gentle scrub a try once a week. When washing the face you must consider lukewarm water, and end it up with a splash of cold water. • MOISTURE PROPERLY: Step two is automatically the moisturizer, and it is better to apply while the skin is still slightly damp to help seal in moisture. • STAY HYDRATED: Drink Water. Water is what moistures the skin from the inside. Coffee and alcohols dehydrates big time. It is recommended to keep record of your consumption in order to balance it with the water intake. • LIMIT THE REFINED SUGAR INTAKE: Nobody hates either flavored coffee especially if accompanied with delicious piece of cake or some cookies, or a can of soda after a condensed meal. However, such quantity of refined sugar used in those items affects your skin, because sugar causes inflammation. That does not mean to prevent it for good; it is okay to indulge yourself every now and then. • GET ENOUGH SLEEP Adjusting the sleeping habits is important for the skin health. As much as the body needs the appropriate hours of sleep during the night to rest and recharge for the next day; the skin needs these sleeping hours for the cells to rest and rejuvenate, of course that takes place better when considering the previous steps. • LOAD UP ON FRUITS AND VEGGIES: Fruits and vegetables are known for their importance as anti-oxidants. The more variety 12 | March 2018

of these foodstuffs you add to your daily meal and snacks, the more the skin tone will get improved. Grapes, apples, broccoli, blueberries, oats, peanuts butter should be on top of the grocery shopping list -if you are seeking that glowing healthy skin. • DITCH THE SMOKES No advices or recommendation are intended to convince with the importance of quitting smoking. Yet, the effect of smoking on the skin has to be highlighted. Excessive smoking makes the skin in a yellowish color, which

means that the skin loses its natural color with every puff. Smoking also leads to those find lines around the lips, and causes lips discoloration. Smokes cause dehydration as well as coffee and alcohols. The least you can do about it is working hard on step number three. It is obvious that having a healthy skin starts from within, so you need to work inside out. As noticed it all starts with the proper water intake and balanced nutrition. It is not hard; all it takes is a slight shift in the lifestyle to get that healthy looking skin.

- HAIR

SAY GOODBYE TO HAIR LOSS

t is commonly known that hair loss occurs to men more than women, so you can imagine that every man’s nightmare is to find out that he loses too much hair or suffer from early signs of baldness. Hair loss is a wide-spread problem that scares all men, and the scariest we get, the more worried we become. Leave all the superstitions aside and get to know practical solutions on how to grow back your hair.

HAIR LOSS

Hair loss is basically having hair follicles that are sensitive to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and thus start to miniaturize and eventually decreasing the lifespan of every affected hair follicle. In the end, these hair follicles stop producing healthy hair. According to the Belgravia Centre, a hair clinic in London, 40% of men worldwide suffer from hair loss by the age of 35 going up to 65% by age 60 and then growing to 80% by age 80. 16 | March 2018

Hair Loss Causes Hair falling in men is primarily hereditary. Other reasons may include age, smoking habits, stress level or any illnesses. Hair thinning usually starts at the crown area then it develops to baldness in most cases.

SOLUTIONS

Solutions vary from natural remedies like the use of certain oils to permanent solutions such hair restoration and medications. • Natural Solutions If you think that you’re not losing too much hair then try first natural remedies that help grow your hair and make it thicker. Oils such as castor and watercress are efficient in doing just that. Also, Aloe Vera juice or/and gel which regulates the scalp’s ph. level with its alkalizing ingredients. Another

natural ingredient is onion juice because it contains sulfur that improves blood circulation and restores it to the hair follicles. • Hair Transplant One of the main solutions to treat male pattern baldness is hair transplant procedure; it’s a surgery that targets the bald areas by inserting hair follicles into the scalp. It can be painful and may leave some scars, but it is an effective solution to grow back hair. • Medications Another way to solve hair fall problems is medications; they are permanent solutions that help your scalp to re-grown your hair. Nonetheless, make sure to visit a doctor before taking any medicines. The most wellknown medications are Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar).

In case you felt confused between cologne, eau de toilette, and eau de parfum; remember that the difference is only a matter of aromatic concentration. SMART- RELATIONSHIP

“SHE TALKS” BY YASMINE SHAHINE

Did you ever wonder why there are lots of clashes happening between men & women regardless of the type of the relationship?? The answer is simply because Men & Women think differently. It has been proven scientifically that Men aren’t from Mars and Women aren’t from 22 | March 2018

Venus, it’s just that their brains are wired differently. The moment you realize such fact and accept it is the moment where lots of clashes and energy draining arguments will be atomically resolved. Here are 10 simple real life examples that

might ring a bell before sharing some macal tips on how can you deal with women to enjoy a healthy relation. • Men can turn off their brains. Women can’t. That’s why men can go fishing for hours and women will worry about whether or not

them dry cleaned if dirt get on them. • Men think rationally. Women think emotionally. That’s why you pick out the cheapest birthday card at the store in two minutes, and she spends 20 minutes analyzing every word of how the receiver will interpret the card’s written message. • Men can compartmentalize. Women see the whole picture. That’s why if you are in a new relationship, you ask yourself if the first date went well at the end of the night, and she has already named your third child. • Men want to go from Point A to Point B. Women want to experience the journey. That is why men’s sentences are short, and women’s conversations last for hours. • Women can multitask, men can’t. That’s why women can brilliantly answer a business call at home while holding her child and cooking lunch all at the same time while men see this as insanely impossible to be done. • Men have better logical skills than women but women have better language skills. That’s why in any discussion women are more expressive in describing the issue on hand and men only focus on getting the job done. • Women have the ability to see details much more than men. That’s why a mum can scream her head off for her son to pick up his cloths that are scattered everywhere in the room while he can’t even see them!! • Women generally have better memory than men. That’s why you feel amazed in any argument how can she recall what you’ve done 3 years ago in a similar incident while you don’t even remember what you ate yesterday night. • Women tend to take pain more intensely than men. That’s why she gives you these weird looks when you stay in bed for 3 days and ask for soup because you have flu.

the napkins at your wedding will coordinate with the salmon on the plate next to the flowers in the centerpiece on the table, especially if her aunt is sitting next to her second cousin who recently returned from Canada where she immigrated 2 years ago … • Men enjoy the moment. Women often can’t enjoy the present because of what might happen in the future. That’s why men can take a nap on the expensive designer pillows on the couch and women can only see how much it’s going to cost to have

Seems Familiar?? Now after proving that men & women think differently, let me give you some tips on how to deal with these differences with the women in your life…

geeky women, fun women, artistic women, ambitious women etc... Each woman has her own personality and goals. Don’t mistake one woman’s behavior as a universal female characteristic. Just because your sister doesn’t like sports doesn’t mean that your wife doesn’t too. • If you think she’s upset, ask. Most of women feel uncomfortable talking about emotional pain . If you get the sense that something is wrong, but she isn’t saying a word about it, give her an opportunity. Take her aside in a quiet time and ask what is wrong. “You seem upset, and I’m worried. Did I do something that hurt you?” “You seem distant today. Is something wrong?” • Be a good Listener. When a woman is upset and needs to talk, be aware that she is not looking for advices -at least at this stage. She just needs to be heard and to feel that you are really listening without faking it. If she is talking about an issue that is causing her pain, remember that she is a woman not a man so don’t put on the “Mr Fix It” hat and start coming up with solutions, just listen. • Compliment her. Whether you are in a serious relationship or just friends, or for your mum, sister or even daughter, a good compliment is often appreciated. When complimenting a woman, be sincere and do not just focus on her physical looks • There are many aspects of a woman besides her physical appearance that deserves attention. Consider complimenting her intelligence, sense of humor, creativity, cooking skills, or compassion for others • Be proud of her. Shine a light on her accomplishments and show her that you are proud of what she has achieved. • Genuine Kind words, a nice greeting card, or a gift are all ways to celebrate her achievements.

SIMPLE, ISN’T IT…..

• Recognize that women want to feel connected. This doesn’t mean you need to put your needs on hold. For example if you come home exhausted after a long day at work and she wants to talk, don’t give her the angry face. You can simply say sweetly “I just need 1 hour to unwind then I’ll be with you”. • In your life, you will know sporty women, March 2018 | 23

SMART - BALANCE

THE OPTIMUM BALANCE By Samar Gamil

Throughout our trip in life, it is noticed that to develop in a certain aspect you need to dig deeper, read more, and be in situations that triggers development in the desired area of focus. To my interest I found out that loving yourself and putting it first is a skill to be learnt as well. Not everyone is able to nurture one’s self, put it upfront sometimes, be selfish every now and then; in fact the fast tempo of life and family/work circles overloads us and eats our time to an extent that we’re left with minimal to zero time for ourselves. A balanced life has known pillars, such as family, personal, career, spiritual, health and Financial. Having an unbalanced level of energy and being strongly society programmed can lead us to exercise the pillars we feel familiar with yet again not necessarily the healthy ones of us. Balance is usually a target that we seek to pursue every now and then in our own terms. To my astonishment I found a huge amount of definitions for the words ‘Balance’; there is ‘Power Balance’, ‘Energy Balance’, ‘Sense of Balance’,’ Work Life Balance’... etc. Let’s tackle further the ‘Work-Life Balance’ & ‘Energy Balance’ as they’re very much relatively proportional. Starting by their definitions; ‘Work–life balance’ is a concept including proper prioritizing between “work” (career and ambition) and “lifestyle” (health, pleasure,

26 | March 2018

leisure, family and spiritual development/ meditation). This is related to the idea of lifestyle choice. ‘Energy Balance’ is about maintaining a balance between Masculinity & Femininity; Masculinity & Femininity are made up of both socially-defined and biologically-created factors, both males and females can exhibit masculine & feminine traits and behavior. How we are socially programmed? Throughout our career life, we’re asked to work with certain standards, we’ll be appreciated if we work longer than 8 hours daily, career plans are sometimes preset and we’re asked to commit to action plans and achieving goals to fulfill certain roles in our organizations which might impact the so called ‘Work-Life Balance’ Diving lately into masculine & feminine energies, I came to realize that there is a huge spectrum between Feminine & Masculine Energies; Feminine Energy is about ‘Being’ while Masculine Energy is about ‘Doing’ i.e. the more you enjoy doing nothing and simply relaxing, you’re exercising the ‘Feminine Energy’ while the more you commit to action plans and to do lists, you’re exercising the ‘Masculine Energy’. Since we’re seeking balance in everything in our lives; you’ll find men with high feminine energy attracted to women with high masculine energy and vice versa, you’ll find technical corporations and multinational organizations increasing focus on masculine energy as it’s all about targets, achievements and goals unintentionally messing up with the ‘Energy Balance’ Our Awareness Level Being sometimes unaware of what’s going on with our Energy levels and tendencies, we might find ourselves drifting to one of its extremes; usually the extreme that we have as our comfort

zone yet not necessarily the healthy once for us So we might be achieving a lot in our lives as per the social programming, as per the known norms yet we tend to miss something that we have a problem to define. Loving yourself is a process unlike any other process; it’s pretty much customized to your needs and what exactly you want to do in life yet didn’t focus on that much it as it’s rarely a priority Let’s imagine that for a few minutes you offloaded the baggage of all the tasks/to do lists/ responsibilities you should do and instead you thought about what makes you happy the most; things that once cross your mind draws a smile on your face taking you to a place where you enjoy your own company doing what you love most These lovely breaks and glimpses of happiness don’t last much as soon they’re interrupted by our demanding daily lives! Ever been in the loop of gaining/loosing weight? Bitten your nails not knowing how to stop? ever been a constant patient to counselors?, ever been discussing your problems more than actually taking the actions to solve them?, ever been a spectator to your life movie rather than playing it’s hero?. Maybe it’s about time to tackle the root cause rather than curing the symptoms with ineffective treatments, maybe it’s time to face the ugly truth that you don’t love yourself that much to put it as a priority. So what shall we do? In life we usually need a witness to be part of our journey; this role is played by different people like doctors, counselors, friends or family members. As much as they can be of tremendous help yet they might cause a mess

in your priorities; putting yourself first has its implications and definitely doesn’t come easily to people used to putting themselves last. It takes a lot of thinking, saying no to stuff you never rejected before, not feeling guilty and most importantly focusing on what you enjoy most rather than being distracted with your life’s’ witnesses. That’s when certain words come into action; ‘Passion’ which is one of the major energy balance as there is as it combines what careers/ hobbies you are pursing along with your life cause or optimum goal you’d like to achieve in life Moreover, further understanding of how energy impacts us is a nice journey that can provide insights on our dominant energy and where we stand from the healthy spectrum mentioned earlier and most importantly how to balance it. Other sciences like Meditation/Yoga, focuses on quality rather than quantity, working smarter not harder, appreciation of nature’s beauty and trying to create memories push us in the direction of being in peace with who we are thus becoming happier and hopefully balanced. I once read that ‘If you don’t love yourself, you’ll always be chasing after people who don’t love you either’. I’d say that this quote might be a bit harsh yet like everything else in life, it’s vibes sent from you to others and coming to you from others thus maybe it’s time to love yourself more thus enhance the quality of your life and actually be happy. In a nutshell, maintaining optimum balance is a journey that we should never give up on trying, we’ll have our ups and downs, we’ll get off track every now and then yet in the end we’re meant to live a balanced happy life or at least try to reach it as long as we are still breathing.

1. AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR WORK LIFE YOU WERE A TEACHER THEN YOU PURSUED THE ACTING PATHWAY. TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS CAREER SHIFT AND HOW DID IT AFFECT YOUR LIFE BACK THEN? I consider this stage as a personal workshop for me as an actor, I spent one year in that full time job. It was an educational cooperation with both John Hopkins and the Kennedy center under the umbrella of “Nour Al-Hussein Foundation”; where we developed a curriculum that teaches kids the art of educational theater. Basically I had more of a coaching role at the job. Although the job had a true add-value to me; I started to feel the routine is killing me, since all I wanted to do was acting, that is when I decided to resign in order to pursue my dream, especially that I have been submitted with a TV series project that I found a great career kick-off.

30 | March 2018

2. UPON RESIGNING, YOU IMMEDIATELY STARTED WORKING ON THAT TV SERIES? Yes, and it was challenging too, because back then we had only one production company in Jordan responsible for all TV series. However, the series succeeded and met my expectations, and has been a great kick-off start for me on the local scale. This accordingly proved that my decision of quitting the full time job to pursue what I always wanted to do was right. Especially that my parents were a bit anxious from my decision, just as the majority of our parents; they look forward to us having the job and financial stability.

3. WHAT WAS THE MAJOR TURNING POINT IN YOUR CAREER LIFE AS AN ACTOR?

I consider that I have been through many turning points throughout my career life, I would even tell “starting points” not only turning. My first series in Jordan is definitely the first milestone, comes at the second place the historical series of “Al Amen w Al Maamoun” that also took me into another level; this series is what introduced me to the Egyptian culture, due to its appeal among the cultural societies in Egypt. I consider also both of “Sarkhet Ontha” and “Al Gamaa” starting points here in Egypt, where the first

one helped me to understand the Egyptian market, and brought me to the other one. Every show I participated in afterwards is again a turning point in my acting path.

4. “TORAB EL MASS” THE FAMOUS BOOK IS CONVERTED INTO A MOVIE MATERIAL; SHARE WITH US A HINT ABOUT THE MOVIE PREPARATION AND SHOOTING.

I am done with my part of shooting; I enjoyed working with the director Marwan Hamed, he is very dedicated and keen about his work. As well as shooting with the brilliant stars that I had scenes with such as Asser Yassin, Sabrin went beautifully and smooth. It is definitely an extremely remarkable contribution for me; since the novel itself has already built a great crowd, and I believe the movie production and preparation will support in building a bigger one through the movie.

5. MOVING TO AN INTERNATIONAL SCALE, HOLLYWOOD IS ALWAYS A BIG DREAM FOR ACTORS; TELL US MORE ABOUT THE CASTING AND HOW YOU WERE SELECTED TO CONTRIBUTE IN “THE LOOMING TOWER” AMERICAN SERIES It all came by incidence, Ali Seliman, who is one of the writers and directors, while the casting for the movie he requested

me to send him a show-reel, accordingly I performed the auditions and got selected, by then, I traveled to Morocco for the shooting with Taher Rahim and Jeff Daniels, what I really loved about this experience is that I had the chance to work closely with the DOP of breaking bad, game of thrones and CSI; and definitely working with experienced people from the heart of the TV industry in Hollywood is a priceless experience. This eye-opening experience gave me the opportunity to discover myself and challenged me to unleash my potentials as an actor at a higher level. I have this thought of repeating this experience.

6. ON THE OTHER HAND, WHAT HOOKED YOUR ATTENTION THE MOST TO ACCEPT THE ROLE?

What hooked my attention the most is the book itself, which I find a real objective one; it discusses the conjunction between both CIA and FBI. I am presenting the role of a Yamani soldier without being a terrorist, I liked the idea of breaking this stereotyping pattern. On the other hand, I cannot deny that such industry of Hollywood is overwhelming the whole world. I am always eager to challenge myself, so participating in such huge show will give me a better understanding of where do I exactly stand. The series is about to get aired, and I look forward seeing the results and the audience’ reaction towards it. March 2018 | 31

7. AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR ACTING CAREER, IT IS CERTAIN THAT YOU FACED SOME OBSTACLES THAT MAY HAVE DEMOTIVATED YOU; TELL US ABOUT A MAJOR ONE AND HOW YOU SUCCEEDED TO OVERCOME?

I definitely been through a hell of demotivating moments; however, I always consider these stuff are what built me stronger. When I first came to Egypt, and after I was done with the first TV series, I spent a while with nothing in hand, where at Jordan there were quite good achievements going on there. I met a producer who asked me what are you doing exactly? The gents over there are doing amazing jobs. I answered him that I can see where I am heading to. However, the moment I answered him, I felt in doubt! What helped me to overcome it quickly is my will to move forward and never give room for any negative energy to sip in and drain me.

8. SO FAR, WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ROLE THAT YOU PLAYED?

Akram in “Haza el Masaa” it is very challenging to play a starring role with no master scene; especially that Akram’s character is not easy to understand, since the role has too many unrevealed details. Another challenge was actually reading the people feedback on the show and they keep wonder “what is Eyad Nassar exactly doing in the series?” while I am still shooting until the very last few episodes. My bet was that audiences’ perspectives of Akram contribution will get upside down. It was definitely exhausting and daring as well to proceed with shooting while the program is on air.

9. THE CHARACTER THAT YOU PLAYED AND INFLUENCED YOUR PERSONALITY THE MOST?

Said El-Agaty in “Moga Harra” Series. I believe that we are a mixture of all different characters and personality traits yet with different percentages. Meaning that we are all kind and evil, liars and honest. Being an actor exposes you to all these different behaviors and attitudes, which at some point, nurtures the seed of a certain trait within you. Back to Said el Agaty, this role specifically, the doubtful cop characteristics have elevated to an extent that it became annoying for the people around me.

10. TELL US ABOUT A ROLE THAT YOU COULD HAVE BEEN MORE SATISFIED WITH, IN TERMS OF THE AUDIENCE REACTION? I would tell “Afrah el Qoba.” I think this series specifically when it got aired at the first place, it was an unexpected material by the audience, clumsy to watch and follow this kind of narrative style with the different characters point of views. Still, it was an 32 | March 2018

important move that had to be taken. Such move is pretty similar to “El Gamaa” from my point of view. El Gamaa was totally different experience as a TV series, in terms of acting, videography, directing, and all the aspects of the production were cinema inspired. I believe that El Gamaa changes the idea of the visual identity in the Egyptian drama. That is what I expect from Afrah El Qoba too, I believe in couple of years it will be another major influence on the type of the drama series direction. 11. AWAY FROM ACTING; WHAT ARE THE JORDANIAN TRADITIONS THAT YOU ARE KEEN TO FOLLOW IN EGYPT? The first tradition that I did stick to was the marriage agreement. When I decided to tie the knot with my beloved wife who is Egyptian, I agreed with the families that I will take care of the whole thing following the marriage traditions at Jordan. What actually made me insist on proceeding with these traditions are my sisters; I have 5 sisters and I witnessed all of their marriages, so this is what I felt I should do too, proceed just the same way; besides the Jordanian signature dishes of course, such as; maalouba and mansaf.

12. 4 WORDS AND DEFINE IT FROM YOUR OWN PERSPECTIVE – SUCCESS, RISK TAKING, SATISFACTION, AND HAPPINESS. Success is fearful; Risk taking is my middle name. Satisfaction, is each and every actor’s main issue, it is a state that we never reach. Happiness is something subjective, it depends on your own understanding and dictionary. I think it is not healthy for happiness to be around all the time, it is better to keep memories of happy moments instead so when you recall it counts.

March 2018 | 33

13. WHAT ARE EYAD’S TOP HUMAN VALUES?

I would speak about my personal life; I care about things that reflect on my kids. I am a proud father of three Adam, Noah, and Essar. I am more concerned and caring in raising my daughter –Essarmay be a little more than the sons. The fact that I am the first man in Essar’s life makes me responsible about drawing the character of the ideal man in her mind. Eventually when she grows up and about to step into a relationship, she will have a better appreciative of her worth and what she deserves. One of the major things that I do my best to inherit onto my kids is that I am the first person on earth to have their back and support them no matter what. After we resolve the problem, it is time to discuss what happened with the root cause. I could tell that I do my best to be a good father, and husband of course.

14. THE LIFE MOTO THAT YOU LIVE BY AND KEEP YOU MOTIVATED? The passion, I love my job so much, I believe that one should always do he believes in, and see where you are heading because this is how you reach your destination. In other words, “Visualize to Materialize”

EVOQUE - RANGE ROVER

Mild hybrid variant will join petrol PHEV to provide two electrified versions of next generation SUV in 2019. The Evoque is set to launch with 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid, but previous research projects by Jaguar Land Rover suggest the 2.0-litre diesel powertrain is likely to use a 48V mild-hybrid set-up. This mild hybrid is based on a Range Rover Evoque donor vehicle and features a prototype 89bhp diesel engine with a 48V electrical system. The vehicle incorporates a 15kW crankintegrated motor with a disconnect clutch within a hybrid module sandwiched between the engine and a nine-speed transmission. The motor-generator is powered by an advanced 48V electrical system and a 48V lithium ion battery. 42 | March 2018

JAGUAR I-PACE

Jaguar is sprinting to get its first electric car to market during the Geneva Show on first of March. The “I-Pace” has been testing in Sweden, with temperatures as low as -40 degree in order to ensure the batteries’ efficiency. The car’s maximum range on a fully charged battery is about 310 miles, as measured on the New European Driving Cycle. The I-Pace’s drive is provided by a pair of synchronous permanent magnet electric motors, one integrated into each axle and paired with a single-speed epicyclical transmission. The powertrain provides four-wheel drive, immediate response from a standstill and rapid torque distribution between the two axles. Each motor produces the equivalent of 197bhp, meaning the I-Pace concept has 395bhp and 516lb ft on tap. Jaguar’s claimed 0-60mph time for the car is 4.0sec.

MINI ELECTRIC CAR BY BMW

China will witness the first electric car produced by BMW. The Mini Electric was demonstrated by a concept revealed last year, and first prototypes have since been spotted testing ahead of a 2019 launch. The production model will be toned down from the concept, with the highly stylized bodywork and yellow flashes on the exterior likely being diluted.

Apple iPhone SE 2 Apple iPhone SE 2 will be realized this month, While the iPhone SE looks similar to the iPhone 5S, there is an expectation that the iPhone SE 2 will look more like the iPhone 8, although it is expected to have smaller dimensions. Currently the iPhone SE has a 4in screen (that’s 4 inches measured diagonally). The handset itself measures 123.8mm by 58.6mm and its 7.6mm thick. It weighs 113g. The new iPhone SE dimensions may slim down further. For example, the phone might be as thin as the iPhone 8 at 7.3mm. If Apple was to ditch the iPhone 5s-esque design for the iPhone SE, in favour of mimicking the iPhone 8 design, this could be feasible. Apple could introduce a 6.1in LCD-TFT screen on its new low-cost iPhone, while the other iPhones will feature OLED screens like the iPhone X does now. Let’s introduce Apple iPhone SE 2 new features; it could offer a wireless charger, 3D touch screen and a face ID, and of course other great features such as: 12 MP camera with an f/2.2 aperture, 2GB RAM and 32GB or 12 GB storage options.

Huawei P20 Triple Camera The Huawei P10 is about to be replaced with the Huawei P20. The new Huawei phone will be available in three models: ‘Emily’, the standard phone in Ceramic Black/Twilight; ‘Charlotte’, a Plus version in Ceramic Black/Twilight; and ‘Anne’, a Lite model in Midnight Black/Klein Blue/Sakura Pink. Huawei P20 will actually have three cameras at the rear. As mentioned earlier there might well be three models including a Pro or Plus model as well as a Lite version.

NAIL THE WORKOUT WITH BALLS

Balls those simple spheres that have managed to remain the source of activity and enjoyment since the childhood. During the infancy, it was the ideal item to play with and run after in a landscape. Now as grownups, we call it exercise balls, also known as physio balls, swiss balls, or fit balls. They are large, elastic balls that turn to be a great activator during a workout that makes difference in terms of body shape, since balls works best to strengthen and stretch the body. It also improves the overall core stability and balance.

WORKOUT OPTIONS

Fit balls can be used solely during the whole workout, or you can save the extra effort for certain exercises only. In both cases, inserting the ball within a workout increases its intensity as a result of the effort that has to be exerted by the core and muscles to maintain stability.

EXERCISE TYPES

Exercising on a stability ball has a wide array of activities that can be done; the type of exercise is dependent on the outcome that you are looking forward. If you aspire to build and strengthen the abdominal muscles, go for the crunches on the ball type. Have a seat on the ball while being weight-free and enjoy the chest presses, bicep, and tricep lifts. Swiss ball exercises are the perfect choice for stretching back, core, and legs.

CONSIDERATIONS

What makes the ball exercise counts efficient is the ball itself regardless of the type of exercise. Which means that one must use a ball that is sized properly in proportion to the body in order to be able to perform the exercise properly. To be in charge of the workout using a ball, you must ensure that the ball is inflated to secure sitting on it with knees bent at a 90-degree angle.

SAFETY RECOMMENDATION

To prevent injury and accidents, as well as achieve the maximum benefits of your exercise, you should use the ball on a padded surface, carpeting or mat in case you lose your balance. To ensure stability, keep the feet similar to shoulder-width apart during the sitting exercises. The nearer you place the exercise ball to the wall, the less you are exposed to falling in case of losing balance. The last advice to prevent muscles’ tensions is maintaining a naturally straight spine while seated on the ball. 54 | March 2018

FITNESS - FAT TRIMMER

TRIM THE FAT SAVE THE

T

MUSCLE

There are people from the school of thought that loosing fat and maintaining muscle mass simultaneously is an impossible feat, however that isn’t strictly true with some careful planning it is in fact absolutely achievable. We at the Fitness and Lifestyle Magazine are here to teach you how you should eat and train if you want to keep your lean muscle while loosing fat. You may wonder why the retention of muscle is so important, well, quite simply gaining or loosing fat is significantly easier than building muscle. Assuming that time is not of the essence, then your best course of action is take the time it requires to get lean without sacrificing any of your hard earned muscle. We take a two-pronged approach: training and nutrition. As Instagram posts readily tell us your body shape is 70% nutrition (what you eat) and 30% by training, with these percentages in mind lets start where you reap the most benefits: nutrition.

NUTRITION

This is straightforward and it is best solved with a touch of maths. Firstly, identify the amount of calories you need to maintain your current weight. Whilst maintenance level is dependent on age, activity level and genetic factors, a helpful rule of thumb is your body weight in pounds (lb.) x 15 per day.

Low fat Cottage Cheese Once you have established your maintenance aim to eat 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. Limit fats and eat healthy carbs as outlined above. If the scale doesn’t move down, then adjust your initial sum to bodyweight in lb. x 14 instead of the original x15. Eating smaller meals throughout the day will prevent dips in blood sugar which in turn cause cravings. Spreading the calories across meals fuels your metabolism and makes your less hungry. There are other intakes to consider aside from food. One of which is fluids – muscle is approximately 70% water and fluid is an essential transport mechanism for your nutrients. When water intake isn’t sufficient you’ll feel sluggish and loose strength. Aim for 3-4 liters if water daily and naturally we needn´t mention that juices, soft drinks and alcohol should not be part of your daily fluid intake.

Another intake to factor is supplements. Whilst the decision to take supplements is an entirely personal one. There are a coupled that could be suitable for your busy lifestyle:

Cucumber

WHEY PROTEIN POWER, can be helpful when trying to reach your protein quota, plus its pretty portable machining it highly convenient when you’re on the go. BRANCH CHAIN AMNIO ACIDS (BCAA´s), have been scientifically proven to prevent the loss of muscle making them another useful supplement to consider.

Training

Often when people want to loose fat the first thing they consider is doing cardio but please take on board that cardio alone will not help you achieve your goals. The best form of exercise for shaping your body is weight training and that is true for men and women alike. Resistance training (or weight training) increases your metabolic rate by increasing your muscle mass – the body needs requires more energy to maintain the muscle mass – fat on the other hand doesn’t require any energy it sits there annoying us! Its not rocket science and by following a few simple rules to you´ll get the most out of your workout. So lets me absolutely clear irrespective of gender or age weight training is pivotal to fat loss, it helps you to be stronger and leaner.

•Don’t waste time with new fangled fancy exercise instead be selective with your training – pick big hard exercise, compound movements like: squats, deadlifts, pull ups, lunges, bench press, dips and shoulder press. • Aim to maintain as well as build some muscle, everyone trying to loose weight would benefit from gaining some muscle. Even a few extra pounds of lean muscle means more a lot more calories burned every day. • Finally boost your metabolism post training, at we mentioned fat loss isn’t just bout what burns the most calories during exercise it about what burns the most amount of fat over a 24hour period. Finish your session of with some short high intensity cardio as opposed to the long steady state cardio of yester years. Short, high intensity exercise creates an oxygen debt known as EPOC or excess post exercise oxygen consumption – this is what boosts your metabolism long after you’ve finished training. So to conclude you have a pretty comprehensive list of do´s and don’ts, try to steer clear of bro science and alluring but a best inefficient at worse dangerous short cuts. You need to follow these guidelines and add an extra dollop of motivation and patience for good measure. Good Luck!

- MEDITATION

REASONS TO START

MEDITATING

FITNESS

If you have time to breathe you have time to meditate. You breathe when you walk. You breathe when you stand. You breathe when you lie down. – Ajahn Amaro

M

editation is a mental practice, when mastered you have control over your mind and not the contrary. Meditation is often misunderstood or may be misperceived; people tend to see meditation as crossed legs posture and doing nothing. Well, that is way far from what people do while meditating.

First of all, to meditate is to breath properly, because, yes you may be breathing in a wrong way. Visualize a new born sleeping like an angel, how does he/she breathes? Babies breath using their bellies, which is the right way to breathe, you inhale from the nose feel the breath penetrating your body all the way direct to the tummy, and when you exhale, use the mouth emptying the belly. There’s something magical about the belly breathing, when you succeed to shift your focus and mind in the breathing, the body feels relaxed and calmed down, thus, you will feel peaceful. Moving to the posture thing, don’t worry no need for the crossed legs position. All you need to do is find the most comfortable seating for you with a straight spine. Important to mention that meditation comes in different forms, you may mediate when seated, while walking, and there is also the dynamic meditation which is dependent on following a series of movements in a chaos environment to distract the mind from its systematic way of thinking which helps in releasing any negative emotions in an energetic way.

2.Meditation improves concentration Maintaining a regular practice of meditation makes people excel in taking control of their mind and breathing. As mentioned previously, the act of belly breathing itself calms the body; and with consistent practice it beats the fogginess of the brain. 3.Meditation increases acceptance Meditation connects us with our inner voice and soul, where you discover a lot of aspects about your personality traits. By time, you understand yourself and start accepting yourself with all your flaws. Self-acceptance is important because it is the key to any positive change you are willing to initiate. 4.Meditation practice benefits cardiovascular and immune health Meditation induces relaxation, which increases the compound nitric oxide that causes blood vessels to open up and subsequently, blood pressure to drop. One study, published in 2008 in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, showed that 40 of 60 high blood pressure patients who started meditating could stop taking their blood pressure medication. Meditation also improves immunity.

LET’S HAVE A CLOSER LOOK ON THE 5 REASONS THAT MAKES YOU WANT TO MEDITATE:

5.Meditation influences your workout Meditating prior to starting the exercise is a great way to stretch your muscles with focus and control. At first, it is normal that your mind may drift during the process; yet, through practice, you can guide it back to your intention of the moment. This simple pre-workout meditation can be performed in the car before stepping into the gym, or inside before you start your routine.

1.Meditation reduces stress Stress creates agitation and it is something most of us deal with on some level. And it’s increasing, given the rising use of anti-anxiety medications. Meditation allows people to take charge of their own nervous system and emotions.

When meditation become part of you daily activities, you will feel a difference in your state of mind and people around you will see and notice a progress in your behavior, because meditation is not just a practice to do, but actually it impacts different aspects of your personality traits and activities you perform.

CROSSING EGYPT CHALLENGE Crossing the country from Aswan with only with the purpose to increase the people awareness about the population. This is exactly what the team of crossing Egypt Challenge did during 24 days with an average of walking 42 kilometers per day; this challenge was supported by the “United Nations Population Fund” UNFPA and the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports. We had the chance to interview Helmy Elsaeed; lead of the team and the Guinness Record Holder.

FROM CYCLING TO WALKING, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

I am endurance athlete, which includes cycling, walking, biking, climbing, and rowing. I see myself doing a brilliant job. Mental and physical strength required are all the same, what really differs are the technical skills which you need to adopt and master, such as the rowing the technique itself, or how to climb, etc. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS CHARITY ORIENTED PROJECT. I am a Guinness record holder for the fastest crossing to the European continent by bicycles. It was done for Child Autism awareness last summer 2017, when I came back I was fueled to do a charity thing in Egypt, 60 | March 2018

and since I’m interested in the crossings of continents and countries. “Continents under human power is something that I really like” where I manage to combine the two things which I love the most, travel and using the human power. HOW DID THE IDEA OF CROSSING EGYPT GOT CRYSTALIZED? Since I was just done with the biking challenge in Europe and if I thought of doing it in Egypt it would take me only 4 days. Choosing to cross Egypt by foot walking was selected in order to upgrade the challenge at a higher level in terms of the mental and physical aspects of it, this is when I started to think about the most basic form that I could do, and it was basically crossing by foot, walking or running, and the highest endorsements

were for walking. What also made me go for the walking is a way to beat laziness of the surroundings when they cannot move to the kiosk to bring something. SHARE WITH US THE STAGES OF TEAM FORMULATION AND SLECTION OF THE CAUSE. Prior to the Guinness challenge, I was living in Gouna, where I got introduce to a brilliant community that I found will be suitable as team members. Since almost all challenges and activities I perform alone, I thought this time to include more people to work on it all together. Abdallah, Cairo Runners co-founder, who introduced me to Omar and Jumana, and basically the team formed. By then, we started to brainstorm about charity issues to support and promote during our challenge,

using the connections of each one of the team, we managed to settle down on the cause and get in touch with the UNFPA. They usually deal with issues related to gender equality and gender violence who liked the idea of our project and challenge and decided to support us using their resources and help us make it happen, and accordingly the ministry of sports supported us too. Upon settling down on the challenge, I started to communication with my network of friends who have their own businesses in the sports field. Where Sprint active wear designed the outfit and “ASN” Advanced Sports Nutrition. Upon arranging the whole ecosystem for the challenge we headed the road to Aswan and started. A pleasure to mention too Manal Rostom, the first Nike Hijab ambassador was involved in the beginning of the trip and at the end as well in terms of support and social media promotion during the event.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO PREPARE FOR THE CHALLENGE?

I am always travelling, active, hiking, and definitely walking is something that we do each and every day, of course not with the same intensity of the challenge. However; if you will walk 42 kilometer per day –which is the average marathon length- you will find yourself more observing the way you walk, and you will start noticing things that never crossed your mind. Also, it was not too long since the Guinness thing was not too far prior to working on this project, so I can tell that from a fitness perspective, I was at peak, physically and mentally; which was evident that the full distance was completed.

WHAT HAVE YOU DISCOVERED ABOUT EGYPT DURING THIS TRIP? Northern Qena is an extremely beautiful city; we were astonished by its beauty especially at Nagaa Hamady, were the mountain at the

eastern deserts is embedded in the Nile, beautiful scenery that made surprised that such beauty exists in Egypt.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO PROCEED WITH THE CHALLENGE?

Hosting this challenge for the first time, made the team super energized to complete the challenge, especially with the support we received from the UN and the ministry. What also encouraged us during the marathon is when down the road you realize how far we have come walking. Also leaving a fingerprint and to feel inspiring for people around you from different city made us see and feel the value of what we were doing. People were left amazed when they get to know that we were walking all this distance; which definitely gave us a push and motivated us to proceed.

HOW THIS CHALLENGE INFLUENCED YOUR CHARACTER?

It influenced my character more than anything in the world. Definitely after each and every trip I do, I change a little bit. That challenge of the Guinness record was physically demanding in a huge matter. This challenge was eye-opening and mentally developing. I claim that I had the chance to see almost up to 85% of Egypt that I never had the chance to see before. Discovering the real Egypt in terms of the landscapes and the people. And definitely talking about specific issue such as family planning, is considered taboos over there, so when you get the chance to open a conversation with people about such topics, and delivering sessions in the youth centers about youth-related issues, and have a tangible chance to see people reactions’ on these issues influenced us. Besides of course the physical and mental aspects of it that does change you as well, 62 | March 2018

it makes you tougher in a different way. The human interaction with different people, cultures’, and mindsets added to my character and made me learn a lot about how different personalities and communication ways, the whole team was under pressure, and even mental and physical stress, you act differently than when you are calm, relaxed and everything is at ease.

DID YOU FEEL THIS CHALLENGE HAD AN INFLUENCE? HOW?

We had two types of conversation; the first one was people who we meet randomly while walking down the streets, and the other type are planned lectures at certain spots that were arranged by ministry of youth. I observed more acceptance from women towards these topics which is logically understood; while men disagreed a bit tackling these ideas, especially the ones whom we spoke to randomly across the streets.

On the other hand; the gentlemen who attended lectures at the youth center showed a higher level of acceptance attitude, which makes sense too, since they came voluntarily. Thought those random conversation we believe this cause have had the chanve to make an impact on the way they percieve conversations about population. When we challenged their point of views and perspectives, they left us while thinking about it again; which we consider a change of course. ARE YOU PLANNING FOR SIMILAR UPCOMING PROJECTS? Yes, I am in the process of planning for a couple of record projects; mixed of international and local challenges, some of them are cycling, some climbing, and rowing. It shall follow the same manner of embedding endurance sports in awareness.

IS IT BETTER TO DO FULL-BODY WORKOUTS OR TARGET DIFFERENT BODY PARTS IN EACH SESSION?

HOW CAN I GET MORE ENERGY FOR EARLY MORNING WORKOUTS?

This really depends on what you want to achieve. So you have to keep an eye on the pros and cons of the full body workout so you can determine if this is what you need or not. During a full body workout, the whole body is stimulated which in returns increases the effectiveness of the workout. The highest is the stimulation and the practice frequency, the better and quicker you master the exercise technique. On the other hand, some people cannot deal with full-body workout. Also the efficiency of a full body session depends on the selected exercises, if the muscles were not targeted equally it may cause a lag in the development of some body parts, were some grow quicker than others. 64 | March 2018

If you are getting adequate rest but you’re still not feeling energized in the morning, the problem may be that your body is in a state of ketosis after fasting throughout the evening during your sleep. Ketosis is when the body is using fat for energy. If you aren’t eating enough carbohydrates, then your body turns to fat for energy. This can cause that low energy feeling before your workouts. Green tea, green juices, coffee and even getting sunlight can help boost energy levels. Starting your workout routine with a fast-tempo, blood circulating dynamic warm up may not only help boost energy but will help prevent injuries caused by low energy, low focus workouts.

David Sauter, Fitness Trainer WHAT EXERCISES WILL HELP REDUCE CELLULITE ON THE HAMSTRINGS? Cellulite can be one of the most frustrating aspects to losing weight. You may find yourself losing weight everywhere but the cellulite still persists. Ridding your body of cellulite involves a combination of High Intensity Interval Training and a proper diet. The following exercises supports in beating the stubbornness of your cellulite, Burpees, Bodyweight Squats, Push-ups, Bodyweight Lunges, Jump Squats, and Mountain Climbers.

STEPHANIE HARTER, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist WHAT IS THE RIGHT WAY TO BULK UP?

Excess calories in any one meal will always be converted into body fat. Eating small, frequent meals promotes more efficient muscle growth because it helps to regulate insulin levels. Another key to increase lean muscle mass and “bulking up,” is to Increase your intake of good fats. Some fats are necessary to ensure good hormonal production and thus muscle growth. Eliminate all fats and see your testosterone levels take a dive. The body needs fats like the omega essential fatty acids in order to ensure proper hormonal production and brain function. These oils are essential because the body cannot manufacture them and they help with many things like enhanced recovery due to reduced inflammation, enhanced nutrient partitioning due to their ability to neutralize enzymes necessary for fat storage, which means more calories go toward muscle production and less to fat.

Victoria Taylor, Registered Dietitian ARE NUTS A HEALTHY SNACK?

Plain nuts are the healthier, but they don’t have to be boring. Dry frying or toasting nuts in the oven gives them a stronger flavor – particularly for almonds, hazelnuts and pecans. Try adding spices like Chinese fivespice, paprika or cayenne pepper. For a sweeter flavor, try cinnamon or vanilla extract. If you keep an eye on portion sizes and avoid unhealthy additions like salt and sugar, nuts can be a healthy choice between or with your meals. Try to avoid dry-roasted, salted, flavored or honey-roasted nuts, which come with extra salt and sometimes sugar too. If you’re at a party, remember that nuts are often salted, which may make you feel thirsty and encourage you to consume more alcohol.

BOOSTING THE IMMUNITY THROUGH

ating right and adopting a healthy lifestyle has numerous benefits that go far beyond losing weight and looking good. Having a great body is a common goal we all aspire to achieve, but the true meaning of a great body needs to be redefined in our minds. A great body on the inside is surely going to look great on the outside as well. Most of the effects of aging happen on a cellular level, where our immune system starts having a delayed reaction to repair the damage. Our bodies defense mechanism whether against infections, inflammations, or aging is done by our immunity. In order to keep our bodies protected, we need to boost our immune system and this can be primarily done via our diet.

We are continuously exposed to organisms that are inhaled, swallowed or inhabit our skin and mucous membranes. Whether or not these organisms lead to disease is decided by the integrity of our body’s defense mechanisms, or immune system. When our immune system is working properly, we do not even notice it. But when we have an under- or over-active immune system, we are at a greater risk of developing infections and other health conditions. Sadly, too many of us do not eat enough of the fresh fruits, vegetables and other foods which we need to keep ourselves healthy year-round. You cannot just eat an orange or grapefruit and expect one quick burst of vitamin C to prevent a cold. A truly healthy immune system depends on a balanced mix of vitamins and minerals over time, plus normal sleep patterns and a hefty dose of exercise. With some exceptions, it is best to get vitamins and minerals from fresh food sources rather than in pill form. Make sure you have the recommended daily doses of super vitamins and minerals as, vitamin A, C, D, and E; moreover, minerals as, Selenium, Iron, and Zinc which are known for their strong immune boosting effects. It is preferred to have the previously mentioned vitamins and minerals from natural sources or even supplements on daily basis. Depending on where you live and what time of the year it is; you cannot always get your hands on high-quality fresh food. Keep this in mind frozen options are fine. They pack a similar nutritional value as fresh counterparts. Just choose plain frozen foods rather than those with added sugars or sodium. When searching for how to boost your immune system, try the following 10 foods: • PROBIOTICS: They are good bacteria that help you digest nutrients that boost the detoxification of your colon and support your immune system. Probiotics are found in yogurt, pickles, and fermented cheese. • GINGER: It helps to break down the accumulation of toxins in our organs due to its warming effects. • GINSENG: It plays a role in antibody production; it helps the body to fight invading microorganisms.

• BROCCOLI: It is supercharged with vitamins and minerals. Packed with vitamins A, C, and E, as well as many other antioxidants and fibers, broccoli is one of the healthiest vegetables you can eat. The key to keeping its power intact is to cook it as little as possible. • OATS: They contain a type of fiber with potent antimicrobial and antioxidant capabilities. • GARLIC: Studies have shown that, this potent onion relative contains the active ingredient allicin, which fights infection and bacteria. • FATTY FISH: Salmon, mackerel, and tuna are rich in omega-3 fats, which reduce inflammation, increasing airflow and protecting lungs from colds and respiratory infections. • BLACK AND GREEN TEA: People who drank 5 cups a day of black tea for 2 weeks had 10 times more virus-fighting interferon in their blood than others who drank a placebo hot drink. • MUSHROOMS: They increase the production and activity of white blood cells, making them more aggressive. This is a good thing when you have an infection. • CHICKEN SOUP: It contains collagen, which can help boost the immune system, in addition to amino acids and nutrients that help prevent inflammation. If you are willing to go the extra mile to keep your body healthy and protected try the following bonus tips: • Quit smoking. • Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables. • Exercise regularly. • Maintain a healthy weight. • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation. • Get adequate sleep. • Take steps to avoid infections by maintaining a good hygiene. • Try to minimize stress. Eating right and being hydrated are both essential to a strong immune system, which offers protection from seasonal illness such as the flu and other health problems including arthritis, allergies, abnormal cell development and cancers. Help protect yourself against infection and boost your immunity by including these nutrients in your eating plan.

BODY AND HEALTH

- MENTAL HEALTH

MASTER MENTAL WELL BEING It is impossible to cure the body while dismissing the mind, and vice-versa. The mind-body connection is so much sophisticated, not due to its complexity as much as the way both work in conjunction is astonishing. Everybody witnessed moments of mental fogginess or just out of the mood vibes and figured out that it was due to a physical pain that made us cannot focus. Also, it is sure that we faced the counter moments; where a super tensed mood due to work, family, finance, or whatever that cause physical pain, such as headache, migraine, etc. The connection between working out and mental health is clear. Physical exercise has been shown to add in improving mental health status, since it supports in reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood and by increases self-esteem. Exercise has also been found to treat social withdrawal symptoms. Working out in here does not necessarily means a high intense exercise, yet simply going for a walk or doing yoga, yes, such activities impact the mental health state positively. That is due to the fact that exercising releases endorphins, the body’s “feel-good hormones,” that helps in keeping the mind calm and relaxing the body. STUDIES HAVE AGREED ON CERTAIN ASPECTS THAT GETS HIGHLY AFFECTED THROUGHOUT THE POWER OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Frustration tolerance: Physical activity can be a healthy way to release frustration and anger. No matter what you do - kickboxing, yoga, or going for a run - the physical release of negative energy will leave you feeling refreshed. Studies has shown that exercise can have a preventative effect against the buildup of anger. Reduced tension: When you’re stressed, your muscles contract, adding more tension to your already over-strained body. Exercise releases stored energy and allows muscles to return to a resting state. You may experience fewer backaches, tension headaches, arthritic joint pain ... the list goes on. Increased attention and productivity: When your mental plate is cleared from toxic stress and anxiety, you can have the needed space for more productive tasks. You’ll be more in tune with your body in order to recognize the signs of stress before it takes a toll on your physical and mental health. Better sleep: The more you exercise, the better you’ll sleep, at least according to several studies. When you’re not getting enough rest, you can’t perform at your best. Exercise can knock you out at the end of the night and help you sleep soundly. Just make sure you’re not exercising right before bedtime as it may work you up too much. Stronger immune system: Ever notice that when you exercise consistently, you don’t get sick as often? Exercise lowers cortisol— the hormone responsible for your body’s fight-or-flight alarm. At chronically-elevated levels, it taxes your natural immune system. When you’re physically active, you might demonstrate more stamina and greater resiliency to fight discomfort, inside and out. Increased confidence: Exercise increases self-efficacy, which is the confidence you have in your ability to accomplish a goal. It has been suggested that exercise may provide you with an effective mode through which self-efficacy can be enhanced based on its ability to provide you with a meaningful mastery of experience. 70 | March 2018

Methods

• Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add turkey, garlic and ginger to the pan and cook for about 6 minutes or until turkey is browned. Stir to crumble. • Combine turkey mixture, onions and chopped water chestnuts in a large bowl, stirring well, and set aside. • Meanwhile in a small bowl, whisk together hoisin, soy sauce, rice vinegar and roasted red chili paste and drizzle over the turkey mixture. Toss to coat completely. • Add about ¼ cup turkey mixture to each lettuce leaf, serve and enjoy

Asian Turkey Lettuce Wraps Ingredients • • • • • • • •

10 ears of fresh Sweet Corn 1 Red Pepper ½ medium Jicama ¼-1 small Jalapeno, more if you like it spicy, less if you don’t 1 large bunch of Cilantro 2 Limes, juice only 4 Tbsp Olive Oil 2-4 oz Queso Fresco or Cajita- if you don’t have good Mexican hard cheeses available to you, feta is an OK substitution. In an absolute dire strait, you can use grated parmesan cheese. • 1 tsp Chilli Powder- or 1 tsp Cumin and a pinch of Cayenne • Salt and Pepper to taste

Methods

74 | March 2018

• Serves: 6-10, this makes 6-8 cups of salad. • If you have access to a grill, get it nice and hot. Otherwise, preheat your oven to 500 degrees. Fill a clean sink with plenty of water. Peel back the husks from each ear of corn without removing them, pull away the silks, and let them soak for a few minutes in the sink full of water. This cleans the corn, of course, but also gets a little extra moisture into the husks so you don’t light shit on fire. • Pull the husks back into place and roast the corn in the oven (or on the grill) for about 20 minutes, turning frequently. Even though you soaked the husks, please be mindful of not lighting your corn / face on fire. Once cooked, allow the corn to cool so you can handle it without burning the bejeezus out of your hands. • Seed and dice the red pepper. Peel and dice the jicama. Wash the cilantro and remove the leaves from the stems. We’re only using the leaves here, but the stems are delicious in sauces or for roasting fish– so don’t throw them away, they freeze great until you’re ready to use them. • Roast, seed, and finely dice the jalapeno and then wash the hell out of your hands. The best way to make your fingers stop being spicy is to lube your hands up with plenty of olive oil, and then wash with plenty of dish soap. Capsaicin (the stuff that makes peppers spicy) is not water soluble, but it is extremely fat soluble. Soaking your hands in olive oil traps all the capsaicin in the fat, and the dish soap washes the fat away. To test how well you’ve washed your hands,
