Dear Friends,

ADVOCACY SUPPORT

We are pleased to present this shared annual report highlighting all the good work of The Friends and the Saint Paul Public Library over the past year. It was a year of continuing economic challenges, but working together — and with the generous support of organizations and individuals like you — we’re building on our success, strengthening our services, and improving the outlook for everyone in our community.

2

The face of the library patron is changing, and the Saint Paul Public Library is exploring ways to diversify programs and services to meet the needs of changing demographics. Responding to the explosion in demand for e-books, music downloads and other digital content — as well as public access to the Internet — our library is adjusting to the “new normal.” With continuous improvement and tech-savvy staff, the library is better serving the customers’ varying needs and wants while fulfilling its enduring mission to promote learning. A 2011 study about return on investment in public libraries conducted by the University of Minnesota–Duluth found that for every tax dollar spent on libraries in Minnesota, the state’s residents receive $4.62 in benefits! That is a sound economic investment. But public investment is not enough. Partnerships and collaboration are keys to success in the face of limited financial resources, and private fundraising to enhance services is one of the many ways The Friends supports the Library. As you read through this report, you’ll see evidence of your generous support in the innovations being made by the Saint Paul Public Library, the enthusiastic use of these services by our diverse community, and the positive impact of our shared efforts. We want to thank you and the thousands of individuals who helped make this essential work possible.

A library is both a place and more than a place. The place continues to be important to the community, and the importance of face-to-face interaction — with knowledgeable staff and with neighbors — must not be undervalued. At the same time, the library is mobilizing, reaching out into the community, offering site- and neighborhood-specific materials and services via such resources as the Bookmobile and the Mobile WORKplace. The Bookmobile regularly visits 45 to 50 sites every two weeks. Since 1917, the Bookmobile has been an integral, vital part of the Library, bringing access to information and life-long learning resources to the community. At all locations served, the Bookmobile works with partners to ensure the site’s clientele consists mainly of those who face barriers in accessing a public library facility due to transportation, cultural, or other factors. The Mobile WORKplace continues to offer computer access, skill training, and job search assistance outside of library locations. Generously funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Otto Bremer Foundation, the Mobile WORKplace offers help and classes in English, Hmong, Somali, Oromo, Karen, Amharic, and Spanish. Demand for services is higher than ever.

A place for training and for finding work... 4

Nearly 100,000 people participated in WORKplace services (job search, digital literacy, English language learning) both in and out of the Library in 2012. Unemployment may be going down, but usage of the Library’s WORKplace services is growing more robust, more popular, and stronger than ever. Basic computer skills are increasingly necessary for most employment, even entry-level jobs. The Northstar Basic Computer Skills Certificate helps adults demonstrate basic digital competency and provides a credential to show potential employers. SPPL offers free classes in basic computer skills, Internet, email, Microsoft Office, Windows OS, and Mac OS, and is a testing site for those wishing to earn their Digital Literacy Certificates. The Small Business Resource Centers offer library collections, workshops, and online resources to help you start or grow your own business.

A place for self-directed learning and access to technology... SPPL Mobile connected users to the Library nearly a million times in 2012. First developed late in 2011, the free mobile app allows patrons to search the catalog, access their account, find library locations, browse a list of events, or get the latest Facebook and Twitter updates. The 3M Cloud Library e-Book Lending Service was introduced to the public at the Sun Ray Library in April. Sun Ray Library — a testing lab for the company’s new technologies in library products — was one of the first sites in the country to offer this To download the app for most devices, visit sppl.boopsie.com on your mobile device.

system to patrons. The 3M Cloud Library offers a turnkey system of digital content, in-library hardware, and apps for borrowing and reading, and revolutionizes how library patrons discover, borrow, and read e-books. It includes Discovery Terminals at which patrons can browse the catalog with an intuitive touch-based interface; e-readers that can be checked out like any other lendable materials; and offers compatibility with PCs, Macs, iPads, Nooks, and Androids. Using their personal devices, patrons can browse, check out, and read e-books – all without leaving the 3M Cloud Library app. Technology is ever-present and ever-changing, and Saint Paul Public Library is committed to offering and using technology to enhance learning by bridging the digital divide and making technology available to everyone. Wi-Fi is available at all SPPL locations for those patrons who prefer to use their own devices. In addition, the Library offers access to 443 public Internet computers in 14 locations, and every week offers dozens of computer skills classes and open computer labs for learning and practicing computer skills.

A place to create and learn hands-on, or just hang out with friends... Createch — an exciting variety of free teen workshops and access to tech “toys” such as iPads, digital cameras, audio and video equipment, and computers — lets teens get creative with new technology and make music videos, stop-motion animation, spoken word videos, book trailers, and more. Createch Labs embrace the idea of HOMAGO (Hanging Out, Messing Around, Geeking Out), a new concept in teen education that was developed by cultural anthropologist Mizuko Ito. It acknowledges the importance of giving teens time and space to learn. It’s okay to just hang out in the room, build social ties, and passively absorb the lesson of the day. Interested teens can mess around with the activity. No matter what — or if — they create, they’ve gained a comfort level with a new technology that will serve them in the future. A select few will ‘geek out’ and dive into the activity, building a full-fledged skill. The important thing is that each level of involvement is valid. Just as attending storytime helps toddlers become good readers later in life, attending technology workshops prepares youth to live in a world where comfort with technology will be essential in school and at work. Createch Labs help youth gain the 21st century skills and knowledge they need to succeed in school, careers, and life. Sessions are held at four libraries each week: Hayden Heights, Rondo, Rice Street, and Arlington Hills. Createch is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Science Museum of Minnesota, Saint Paul Neighborhood Network, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

SUMMER READING:

4,345

children and teens met their summer reading goals and earned a free book. 13,699 attended Summer Reading programs.

The Library strengthened its partnership with Saint Paul Parks and Recreation and Saint Paul Public Schools. 6

The Library has taken a leadership role in Sprockets — a diverse mix of program providers, community leaders, and funding partners guided by a common purpose: to improve the quality, availability, and effectiveness of out-of-school time learning for all youth in Saint Paul. Sprockets wants all children to have experiences that ignite their imaginations, give them hope, and build skills for a positive future. Since 1960, The Friends has had the privilege of funding the Library’s summer reading programs. These programs are shown to be an antidote for learning loss. Research shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. Young people who participate in library reading programs actually show gains. With the large number of children and teens using recreation centers during summer months, Summer Reading Program activities were expanded to rec centers city-wide. During June, July, and August, 4,345 children and teens met their summer reading goals and earned a free book, courtesy of The Friends. The Library offered a “Read Down” in May, when children, teens, and adults reading with kids were able to read fines and fees off of their library cards. For every 15 minutes spent reading in the library, participants had their fines reduced by one dollar. The timing of the Read Down allowed youth and their families to clear their cards in time for the library’s Summer Reading Program.

YOUR GIFT MAKES IT POSSIBLE.

STUDENT SUPPORT: The Library welcomed

17,033 Homework Center visits.

“I just wanted to thank you all one last time for helping me out. I had a blast and learned something in the process.” — Nimo

Saint Paul youth continued to enjoy active learning and receive nutritious meals during summer vacation. More than 80,000 free meals were served to youth under age 18 at more than 20 rec centers and four libraries last year. The Summer Food Service Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Research shows that investing in early education pays off economically by building more successful students, who grow up to become better-trained workers. This investment results in improved public health and an expanded tax base for the community. The Library has assumed an essential role in supporting early literacy and an equally essential role in supporting student success with Homework Rescue online help, available seven days a week, and Homework Centers in six locations across the city. Students visited Homework Centers 17,033 times during the last academic year for help with their school work.

Your support helps make that happen!

The number of people attending Books & Bars in Saint Paul continues to grow. This unique take on a public book club show expanded to St. Paul’s Amsterdam Bar and Hall from gigs in Minneapolis and Chanhassen. Moderator Jeff Kamin has taken the suburban book club tradition and put it in a public bar where people’s opinions flow freely with a little “liquid courage.” The Friends is proud to partner with him on this entertaining discussion series which gains followers each month.

Foodie Flicks Free outdoor films returned to Central Library – and last summer it was all about FOOD (with a little love and laughter thrown in for complexity). Food Trucks parked nearby added to the “tasty” evenings!

Special events with international bestsellers Jo NesbØ and Val McDermid, and local writer Dave Wellstone drew hundreds of people to Friends’ events.

For Opus & Olives, Superlatives Abound… 12

Opus & Olives 2012 was nothing short of amazing! The 9th annual, record-breaking event sold out two months before the gala and The Friends had to expand to pool-side seating at the Crowne Plaza – adding another 120 seats for a total of over 1,000 guests (note: that’s 600 more guests than the first Opus & Olives)! Guests loved the event, extolling once again that, “It was the best program ever!” Leading the program line-up was author-emcee, John Taft, CEO of RBC Wealth Management – U.S., who talked about the need for corporate America to return to a role of strong stewardship. Taft spoke of the honor his company felt at having been the lead sponsor of Opus & Olives since its inception in 2004. He presented his new book, Stewardship: Lessons Learned from the Lost Culture of Wall Street. Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Russo and his daughter, Kate Russo, presented their homage to the print book in Interventions, a boxed-set of novellas written by Richard and illustrated by Kate. Cheryl Strayed, riding an amazing high of being chosen as the first author in Oprah’s new book club, detailed her trek on the Pacific Crest Trail in her #1 New York Times bestseller, Wild. Gillian Flynn, who had just sold the film rights to her wildfire novel, Gone Girl, was hugely popular with the crowd. The evening closed with a moving tribute to Sargent Shriver, presented by his son, Mark Shriver, with his book, A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver. Once again, Delta Air Lines donated two round-trip BusinessElite™ tickets to anywhere in the world the airline flies. Delta Vice President, Bill Lentsch, drew the winning ticket for Mike Burbach. He and his family plan a trip to the African country where their adopted children were born. Success often breeds change. The Friends and our co-hosts, the Pioneer Press, have enjoyed nine great years at the Crowne Plaza, but last year’s event clearly indicated that we have outgrown the venue. Put Sunday, October 13, 2013 on your calendar for the 10th Opus & Olives at Saint Paul RiverCentre!

Library Strategies was awarded an Otto Bremer Foundation grant to design and coordinate a leadership institute for rural libraries and literacy organizations. Twelve libraries and literacy organizations in Minnesota are participating in a nine-month training and mentoring program that will end in May 2013, when work will begin with a similar program in Wisconsin.

A Library Strategies committee (comprising six Friends staff members) wrote Beyond Book Sales: The Complete Guide to Raising Real Money for Your Library, which will be published summer 2013.

Expanding Our Reach, Broadening Our Horizons Five staff members from Romanian public libraries and five members of newly organized library Friends groups in Romania, along with two program specialists from the International Research & Exchange Board (IREX), were guests of The Friends for a week in mid-July. The visit was the culmination of a two-year training program presented by Library Strategies, a consulting group of The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library. The consultants provided training and tools to help Romanian libraries learn how to advocate for public support for their libraries and raise private funds and community support by creating Friends of the Library groups. The visit exposed the Romanian library personnel and supporters to best practices in U.S. libraries. Among many other activities, the visit included a meeting with Mayor Chris Coleman and members of the City Council, tours of several Saint Paul libraries, and a presentation at the Sun Ray Library by 3M showcasing new automation technology and the 3M Cloud Library.

In addition to the training activities, the Romanian guests experienced a dinner cruise on the Padelford Riverboat, a visit to Stillwater and its historic Carnegie Library, and an evening at the Lake Harriet band shell. The week culminated with a private dinner overlooking the Minneapolis Aquatennial fireworks.

ROMANIAN LIBRARY PROFESSIONALS AND ADVOCATES

13

Advocating for Strong Public Support A nationwide poll by the American Library Association (ALA) found that almost all Americans (93 percent) believe it is important that library services are free and readily available. Nevertheless, some state and local budgetcutters see libraries as easy targets. For 2012, in response to continued reductions in state aid, the Library was asked to make significant cuts in its budget. The net effects of the cuts were the reduction from 691 to 645 open hours per week and a loss of staffing equal to 12.1 FTEs. While the Library made strategic cuts to its hours in order to continue to provide services at all locations for the most possible users, many people felt the sting of reduced access to the critical and lifechanging services it provides.

14

With a general operating budget that is just three percent of the City’s overall budget, and a staff of only 165 FTEs, the Saint Paul Public Library served nearly 3 million people last year. No other cultural, educational, entertainment, or athletic organization in Saint Paul can make that claim.

Facing those tough budget cuts, The Friends’ Advocacy Committee asked the city’s elected officials to address critical needs by making no cuts to the Library budget. Of special importance to The Friends was that all library facilities remain open for the same hours as 2011 – not sliding back to 1990s levels, as was proposed. With so many residents affected by a change in their employment status, library advocates felt this was the wrong time to be cutting hours.

After rigorous advocacy on behalf of libraries by The Friends and AFSCME, Mayor Chris Coleman and the City Council restored $376,000 to the Library’s budget. The final 2012 budget provided for an FTE reduction at the Library of 5.3 instead of 12.1 — effectively a 3 percent reduction in staff instead of 7 percent. Those positions were already vacant due to retirements and other attrition, so there were no layoffs. Open hours were reduced from 691 to 657 system-wide and the The Library is a collections budget was cut by just over $400,000. trusted, valued and Some may see this budget overall as a loss for SPPL, but compared to library closures and devastating cuts of 30%, 40%, and more being seen in systems across the country, the final budget and the advocacy activity leading up to it show just how much Saint Paul values its libraries. Knowing that legacy institutions become legacies because they are able to evolve, grow and change, our elected officials demonstrate their commitment to the Library’s legacy every year. Let them know you appreciate it!

crucial information and service provider for job seekers and entrepreneurs. It plays a critical role in Saint Paul’s learning network.

NEARLY 35 COMMUNITY MEMBERS FROM THROUGHOUT SAINT PAUL SERVE ON THE ADVOCACY COMMITTEE, PROVIDING DIVERSE GEOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATION FOR EACH OF THE CITY’S SEVEN WARDS.

“In this era of rapidly changing technology, people often ask if libraries really are relevant anymore. But, in fact, it is the Saint Paul Public Library that is leading us into the 21st- century digital world. Offering e-magazines, e-books, free digital music, and a mobile app that is getting one million visits per year, we can truly be proud of a library system that is keeping both our youth and adults educated on the most recent technology.” — Mayor Chris Coleman

Donor Society membership is recognized each year at a special luncheon, sponsored in 2012 by Securian. Guest author Brett Laidlaw (Trout Caviar) shared stories and tips for expanding the creative possibilities inherent in locally available market and foragable foods. Members of the Donor Society received a complimentary copy of Laidlaw’s book, which showcases the distinctive flavor and products of our northern clime at every meal.

Minnesota Book Awards Donors Gifts to the Minnesota Book Awards support year-round outreach activities and ensure the future of the program. We gratefully acknowledge the generosity of our supporters who help broaden the reach of the Book Awards to every corner of the state, celebrate the literary contributions of our state’s writers, and encourage writing and reading by all members of our community.
