Dear Friends, 2009 was an unusual year. Economic challenges hit families and businesses— and non-profits—very hard. It was a time when working together became even more important, and when valued partnerships showed their worth. Those are certainly not bad lessons to learn, for any year. In that context we present our 2009 annual report, a shared message from both the Saint Paul Public Library and The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library. We felt it was fitting to publish our annual highlights together because so much of what we do is tied to and dependent upon each other. The Library could not be the strong and vital institution it is – nor offer its diverse, enhanced programs and services – without targeted grants secured by The Friends. That funding, along with the generous support of individuals who comprise The Friends’ membership, is crucial to our work. At the same time, the indispensable resources and successful outreach activities of the Library make this job easier. People are eager to support a winner, and the Saint Paul Public Library is certainly that.

The recession has had profound implications on the Library’s financial outlook, both for today and potentially for the future. Fundraising support, endowment interest income, and public funding are all impacted. If the Library is to continue to make its tremendous contribution to the economic, cultural and intellectual life of the City, it will be critical for its case to be well made in the upcoming budget process. In spite of these unprecedented times, we’re pleased to report that for The Friends and the Library, 2009 was an incredibly successful year. Consider the following highlights: • Individual giving was up almost 30% over the previous year. • Corporate/foundation giving increased by 75%. • Friends endowments increased in value by $1.4 million. • Opus & Olives had a record attendance of more than 800 people.

administrative costs actually went down in 2009. • Friends advocacy efforts were again effective in minimizing cuts to the Library’s budget. We would like to thank all of our donors who have helped make these highlights possible. We especially want to recognize corporate foundations for their strong support of the Library’s early literacy efforts and Homework Help Centers. These programs have made a significant, positive impact on the lives of hundreds of local students. We’re also grateful to the The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, whose $300,000, two-year grant will allow the Library to launch a Mobile Workplace. This innovative project will feature a mobile service delivery van, complete with ten laptop computers loaded with teaching and testing software. The Mobile Workplace will regularly visit community locations where Library staff will offer job search assistance and computer training, supported by multilingual cultural liaisons who will ensure that services are offered in highpriority languages.

On behalf of the Board, thank you, donors and friends. restaurants with tools for parents to engage young children in pre-reading activities at mealtimes. • The “Bite By Bite” project brought early childhood literacy resources to families visiting foodshelves. The $24,000 grant from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) provided for development of materials, training of staff from the Library and our partner organization Keystone Community Services, and infrastructure at the foodshelves to hold materials and engage children with reading.

Every year, the Saint Paul Public Library touches the lives of most city residents, and 2009 was no exception. There were 121,560 active library cardholders last year, and the demand for services continued to grow, as did the variety of services. The Saint Paul Public Library offered over 200 events and classes a month throughout its branches. These included author visits, book clubs, computer classes, exercise opportunities, music concerts, job assistance, seminars, storytimes, and much more.

Early Literacy: • Storytimes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers at twelve locations; mornings, afternoons and evenings. • The Summer Reading Program was very popular. In addition to almost one hundred programs for young readers, the Saint Paul Public Library provided free books for children who reached goals based on their reading level. Younger children earned a free book after reading 10 and 20 books, while teens earned a free book of their choice after reading 15 hours. The program was supported by many funders, including the Jostens Foundation, with a grant of $5,000 secured through The Friends.

Homework Help: • Homework Centers operated at six branches including Arlington Hills, Dayton’s Bluff, Rice Street, Riverview, Rondo Community Outreach Library, and Sun Ray. Staffed by AmeriCorps participants, work study students from local colleges and community volunteers, these branches provided valuable homework help to students more than 15,000 times. This program is generously funded through grants from Travelers Foundation, Xcel Energy Foundation, McNeely Foundation, RBC Foundation – USA, and the H.E. & Helen R. Warren Foundation. • The Library acquired a new online homework help site called Homework Rescue with support from MELSA. This program provides free homework assistance and tutoring in both English and Spanish with live, one-to-one tutoring available daily from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. • The Read With Me program continued to match over 100 students in grades one through three with community volunteers. Each pair meets weekly to work on reading skills.

• Paw Pals, a program that encourages children to read to dogs, continued to grow in popularity. Central, Dayton’s Bluff, Highland Park, and Sun Ray host Paw Pals monthly.

Technology: • With a $50,000 grant from LSTA, the Library produced “My Library, My Place to Start.” The six short videos about specific Library services, each available in English, Hmong and Somali, can be seen on the Library website. They also were distributed to over 100 organizations around the City and aired on Saint Paul Neighborhood Network (SPNN) hundreds of times.

• Early literacy outside library doors had two major initiatives. The Green Book Shelf program continued to be a valuable outreach tool in reaching families who otherwise might not be Library users. Each branch hosts a green book shelf in a community partner’s location that contains reading material for parents and children to read and take home. Ecolab’s partnership on “Read Around The Town” provided Saint Paul –4–

• Almost every branch offered introductory computer classes which are well attended, ranging from beginning computing skills to advanced use of specific software programs. • All branches installed EnvisionWare for Internet registration. EnvisionWare improves ease of patron internet sign-up and provides payment options for printed material. • Several branches, including Hamline Midway, Merriam Park, and Rice Street received new staff and/or public computers thanks in part to a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. • Improved security cameras and safety equipment were installed at many branches, including Hayden Heights, Rice Street and Saint Anthony Park.

Adult Programming: • The Saint Paul Public Library hosted book clubs at Central, Hamline Midway, Hayden Heights, Highland Park, Rice Street, Saint Anthony Park, and Sun Ray. • Goodwill Easter Seals offered job coaching at many library branches including Central, Highland Park, Rice Street, Riverview, and Rondo Community Outreach Library. • Free tax assistance, provided by AARP, continued to be a large draw at many library branches. An average of 500 people per branch took advantage of this valuable service. • Weekly English Conversation Circles for new English speakers were held at the Arlington Hills and Saint Anthony Park branches.

Working together in a challenging economy: The WORKplace Job and Small Business Resource Centers are supporting Saint Paul’s job seekers and entrepreneurs with a number of unique programs, classes and events. Together with the James J. Hill Reference Library and Saint Paul Planning and Economic Development, Saint Paul Public Library hosted a series of seminars focused on “Making Economic ¢ents During a Recession.” We are pleased to announce that the Library’s marketing efforts for WORKplace programs won three Minnesota Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Classic Awards in the following categories: • Institutional Programs (Government/Nonprofit) • Marketing Services (New – Budget under $75,000) • Integrated Communications (Services) The competition included professional public relations firms such as Exponent Public Relations, Padilla Speer Beardsley, and Bayard Advertising, so the Library is especially honored to have achieved this distinction with a small staff and limited budget. Special thanks go to all the SPPL staff who worked in the Job Resource Center, the Small Business Resource Center, the HotSpot Community Learning Center, and within all library locations to offer WORKplace services to the diverse communities of Saint Paul. –5–

Saint Paul Public Library Receives Top Honors The Saint Paul Public Library was recognized in 2009 as a national and local leader in library services and public relations by the Library Journal, the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA), the Minnesota Chapters of International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), and the Association of Government Communicators, resulting in eight distinguished awards.

The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) presented the Saint Paul Public Library with two 2009 Bronze Quill awards in February. Saint Paulitics won an Award of Excellence for Special Events, and an Award of Merit for Multi-Audience Communication. The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) – Minnesota Chapter recognized the Saint Paul Public Library’s Saint Paul-itics campaign as one of the best public relations campaigns of the year during the 31st annual Minnesota PRSA Classics Awards, held at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center in March.

Library Journal ranked Saint Paul Public Library as one of the top library systems across the state and nation. The Library Journal announced in February that the Saint Paul Public Library received a four-star national rating, which distinguished the Library as being within the top three percent of libraries across the United States. In the Library Journal’s article “America’s Star Libraries,” authors Keith Curry Lance and Ray Lyons explained that the rankings were based on per capita statistics, including circulation, library visits, program attendance and public internet computer uses. Library Journal rated 7,115 public libraries and Saint Paul Public Library was one of eight Minnesota library systems recognized. For public relations efforts, the Saint Paul Public Library was recognized nationally for Saint Paul-itics, a campaign created by staff to help Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman and the City prepare for the 2008 Republican National Convention. Saint Paul-itics was created by a Library committee and carried out by all staff from May through September 2008. Saint Paul-itics offered residents many opportunities to learn more about politics through a variety of performers, speakers, national experts and an outdoor movie series, called Political Scenes. The Saint Paul-itics campaign won seven awards. The Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) presented the Saint Paul Public Library with the John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award, which is considered to be the most prestigious of all library awards in the field of public relations. Library staff were recognized and awarded a grant of $5,000 during the American Library Association annual conference in July 2009, in Chicago, Illinois.

Saint Paul-itics won Classic Awards for “Community Relations: Government and Nonprofit” and “Marketing Services: New.” Participants in the Minnesota chapter awards included large-scale public relations agencies, corporations, and non-profit organizations. Lastly, the MN Association of Government Communicators presented Saint Paul Public Library with two awards of excellence at the annual Northern Lights Awards Ceremony, for “Marketing Services” and “Public Information Project: Special Events.” One of the most coveted, perhaps the most prestigious of the awards given by American Library Association (ALA) is the John Cotton Dana Award. The award recognizes libraries that have distinguished themselves by their public education and public relations efforts. It was named after John Cotton Dana (1856-1929), a librarian who believed that libraries could and should play a leading role in realizing the democratic culture and egalitarian society. Dana recognized that public libraries had to identify themselves with common citizens and become a cultural center in the community, a beacon of light to attract citizens interested in educating themselves to become decision-makers in a democratic society.

Opus & Olives:

Bigger and Better than Ever It’s official... The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library have been called out for putting on one of the best book parties in the country!

Cotton’s eleven-year imprisonment for the alleged rape of Thompson-Cannino and how DNA evidence eventually exonerated him. These two amazing people met when he was released from prison and became friends and coauthors of Picking Cotton.

Opus & Olives was the cover story in the November 30 issue of Publisher’s Weekly (think the Wall Street Journal of the publishing world). The article was a spectacular tribute to the event, and Friends staff received congratulatory calls and emails from across the country.

Publishers Weekly described the “secret sauce” of this event as a great mix of cocktails, book signings, dinner and a great author program. Corporate sponsors love it and keep coming back. The guest list has grown by over 100 each year (we promised not to let it get any bigger!) and the authors are a carefully selected balance of best-selling writers who represent the spectrum of literary genres.

2009’s Opus & Olives was the actual proof that it’s one huge gala that gets better every year. Almost 800 guests crowded the Crowne Plaza Riverfront ballroom to see a star-studded lineup of authors and mingle with Twin Cities book lovers. The Red Balloon Bookshop reported over $15,000 in book sales and authors signed, and signed, and signed. First time author, Mike Walsh was this year’s O&O emcee and he was charming! A Chicago ad man with Saint Paul roots, Walsh shared humor and nostalgia in telling our guests about his book, Bowling Across America: 50 States in Rented Shoes. The book pays homage to his deceased father in a quirky story of the people and experiences he encountered on his bowling marathon across the country.

Opus & Olives really is a party you shouldn’t miss, so put this date on your calendar for the seventh annual Opus & Olives: October 10, 2010… 10/10/10!

After four years of stalking mystery writer, Michael Connelly, The Friends finally caught him and he was worth the effort. The erudite best-selling author of the Harry Bosch series and other thrillers, Connelly talked about how libraries opened his eyes to the possibilities of writing crime novels by introducing him to the books of Mickey Spillane. Julia Glass, the 2002 recipient of the National Book Award for her very first novel, Three Junes, talked about her most recent book, I See You Everywhere. Glass told stories about how libraries influenced her life including a lovely aside about finding love in the stacks… CNN senior legal analyst, Jeffrey Toobin discussed the complexities and personalities on the highest court in the land. The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court spent more than four months on the New York Times bestseller list. The evening ended with an emotional wallop. Ron Cotton and Jennifer Thompson-Cannino told their amazing story of – 15 –

21st Annual Minnesota Book Awards With The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library at the helm, in consortium with the City of Saint Paul and the Saint Paul Public Library, the 21st annual Minnesota Book Awards was another incredibly successful year-long program, culminating in a sold out gala awards ceremony on Saturday, April 25, 2009. The third year of The Friends’ management of the Minnesota Book Awards resulted in an even higher profile for the program. The second annual Book Artist Award, presented to Paulette Meyers Rich, was co-sponsored by Minnesota Center for Book Arts (MCBA). The third year of the Readers’ Choice Award, sponsored by the Pioneer Press and TwinCities.com—an award where any Minnesotan can visit TwinCities.com and cast a vote for a finalist book—garnered 2,000 votes from the reading public across the state. The Friends collaborated with the Loft, Pioneer Press and Secrets of the City to hold author programs leading up to the gala, including the debut of a Readers’ Choice reading and reception event.

The 2009 Book Awards continued to make inroads into corporate sponsorship. This year, four categories had named sponsorships: Children’s Literature – sponsored by MLBA Children’s Fund; Genre Fiction – sponsored by Wellington Management, Inc.; Minnesota – sponsored by Xcel Energy; and Young People’s Literature – sponsored by Tarrant, Drummer, & Liska, PLLC. Sponsors received acknowledgement in all Book Awards print materials, ads, online, and during

the Awards ceremony. There was also sponsorship of the Kay Sexton Award by Common Good Books and support for the Book Artist Award from Barnes and Noble. The Friends began two exciting new initiatives tied to the Book Awards in 2009. First, working with Twin Cities Public Television (TPT), two episodes of “Prized Writers,” featuring Minnesota Book Award winners in conversation, were produced. The premier episode, with authors William Kent Krueger (Thunder Bay) and P.J. and Traci Lambrecht, the mother/ daughter duo who make up P.J. Tracy (Monkeewrench), was an insightful and entertaining conversation about the art, fun and challenges of writing mysteries. The next episode, with children’s and young adult writers Alison McGhee and David LaRochelle, aired on TPT–Minnesota Channel in Spring of 2010. The second initiative was the creation of the Minnesota Writers Hall of Fame. The virtual Hall of Fame launched online with ten initial inductees honored posthumously. Each year The Friends will add two to three new inductees based on nominations by the public via an interactive element on the website. Through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Education – Office of State Library Services, The Friends provided funding for libraries statewide to hold events with Minnesota Book Award winners and finalists. The interest in this program has been overwhelming. The Friends also published another set of bookmarks, posters, reading guides, and DVDs featuring the gala and interviews with the winning authors. These materials are distributed to more than 400 libraries statewide.

“I’ve never been to the Academy Awards, but the gala helped me to imagine what that Hollywood celebration must be like. The excitement of the finalists, the good wishes of those there to support us, the bubble of the crowd, and the dazzle of the decorations and lights, made me feel as if we were all at the center of something momentous. I felt an energy larger than myself and even larger than the 700 people gathered – it was the energy generated by people all over the state who so clearly value the written word.” – 16 –

At the start of 2009, the City of Saint Paul faced serious budget difficulties as a result of the loss of Local Government Aid (LGA) from the State of Minnesota. For the Saint Paul Public Library, lost LGA resulted in a cut to its budget which eventually affected hours in all branches, as well as cuts to the books and materials budget, creating gaps in the collection that could never be refilled. branch hours to replace those cut in early 2010, but The Friends has always had a special interest in the Library’s book collection.

For every gift (no matter what size), a commemorative bookplate was affixed in a new book purchased with donated funds. Donors could remember a loved one, honor a friend or send a message to the Library.

In contrast to the Book Endowment Fund which supports the Library by interest earned on the fund, the net results of the “Stock the Stacks” campaign – $25,230.00 – went directly to the purchase of materials. In addition, the heartfelt messages of support and remembrance by the donors were an inspiration to Friends and Library staff, as they will be for the people who check out these materials for years to come.

The Friends typically shies away from filling gaps in lost public funding for the Library and would not attempt to pay for the staffing of

Our most generous individual members, represented by The Donor Society, provide a necessary foundation for the work of The Friends. The two groups which make up the Donor Society are The John and Myrtle Briggs Circle and The Perrie Jones Circle. Donor Society membership is recognized each year at a special luncheon, sponsored in 2009 by RBC Wealth Management. We welcomed as our guest speaker Curt Brown, author of So Terrible a Storm: A Tale of Fury on Lake Superior, about the great Thanksgiving storm of 1905 that was of one of the worst shipping disasters in our nation’s history. The author spoke at length about that fateful event and signed copies of the book for all in attendance.

The Perrie Jones Circle recognizes individuals who make substantial annual gifts to The Friends, such as a contribution of $500 or more. In response to dramatic and unprecedented cuts to the Library’s materials budget, The Friends called on all residents of Saint Paul to help “Stock the Stacks” for their Library. Nearly 550 people generously responded. For every gift, a commemorative bookplate was affixed in a new book purchased with donated funds. Donors could remember a loved one, honor a friend or send a message to the Library. Those heartfelt messages of support and remembrance were an inspiration to us, and will be for the library users who check them out for years to come. Thank you to the following Friends – old and new – who helped Stock the Stacks!
