The only incentive people have to change is, fear. Fear of the unknown is the basic resistance we put ourselves through every time we hesitate to live freely, to live beyond boundaries but not for 32 year old Theoretical Physicist, Adriana Marais. “The allure of the unknown to me has always felt more powerful than the comfort of the known”, At this year’s annual FNB PCB Luncheon held at the Royal Agricultural Showgrounds on 5 August 2016, women from across the city were addressed by the Phenomenal Mars One candidate Adriana Marais. She captivated the crowd with her astounding knowledge in Quantum Biology and mesmerising inspiration to place herself among a group of fellow enthusiasts to find a meaning of life on Earth and answer the greatest scientific question of all time, “What is life?” Still among us and a lot closer to home then many could imagine is this fun, ambitious young lady! Adriana was born in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal to a family of

She completed with MSc SUMMA CUM LAUDE in Quantum cryptography at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and was then awarded her PhD in Quantum biology at the same institute this year. She is a member of the Quantum Research Group established by Prof. Francesco Petruccione at UKZN. Adriana received the LÓreal –UNESCO regional fellowship award as well as the Best PhD Biophysics Talk at the South African Institute of Physics Conference. She also received the Royal Society of South Africa’s’ Meiring Naude Medal for a young researcher – for a fundamentally important high impact research in her destined field of Quantum Biology. Caro Smit : Founder of SOUTH AFRICANS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING

‘Tragedy should be utilised as a source of strength.’ -Dalai Lama XIV

Caro Smit is a living example of this quote. Her son, Chas Smit, was killed by a drunk driver in September 2005. Over a decade later Caro has managed to run a successful NPO, South Africans Against Drunk Driving, in memory of him, to address the issue of drink driving in South Africa. Her goals are to save more lives with her projects and to spread awareness on the issue of drunk driving and its very real life consequences. Thank you for making a difference, Caro!

What does Heritage Day mean to you? In the September edition of the Galaxy News, we will like to post your stories about what Heritage Day means to you. Whether it is your stories from back in the day or something that has changed for the better, we would like to help you have your say. Let us rise up to the challenge and celebrate a better South Africa for all of us! Email your stories to the editor at alicia@blackincmedia.co.za by the 18th of September 2016 and I will be in contact with you. All credit will be given to you and all standards. Looking forward to sharing your stories and experiences.

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

When everything around us seems all doom and gloom with the severe drought, poverty, lawlessness, local election tension, political killings, corruption, terrorism and so much more the Lord still remains faithful. The recent rains are evidence that He never abandons his people. It is with great delight that I say thank you to the Almighty for the tremendous relief that this water from heaven has brought in quenching the parched earth.

Rains are scarce and Dam Levels are plummeting to dangerously low levels-Water restrictions have been imposed in many towns and cities across the country. The call is made to conserve, save and use water sparingly. The nation stares one of the worst droughts in the country’s history in its face. First it was load shedding that left us in the dark and now its water restrictions.

I pray that you will give us one more thing “the gift of a grateful heart”. Dennis Moodley

As a nation facing one of the worst droughts in causes. The call to use water sparingly may be in place and may be the need of the hour but this is not the real solution to our plight. This is only a temporary solution. For verily even the little water we have will be depleted regardless of how sparingly we use this. Every Atom in this universe is controlled by the Almighty. Not a leaf falls from tree except with his command. Winds blow under his command. Clouds are driven under his command too. For the system to run smoothly the pre-requisite is clear and simple. Man needs to and then his creation. On the other hand should this not happen then hell breaks loose on earth. Sequential catastrophes become the norm. Hurricanes, Earth quakes, Floods and Drought dominate the earth as we witness today. When people generally indulge in Deceitful act such as giving less than is due on them in things which are sold by either weight or measure then such people are undoubtedly punished by the Almighty with widespread drought. of sins. We should not forget that we are the earthly stewards and custodians of all His creation and we should accept this duty with responsibility. So then let us conserve water for it is not an unlimited resource; let us not pollute it, and let us not waste it. I humbly appeal to everyone to play their role in saving water. To the Msunduzi municipality I challenge council to develop a program whereby

While many may still say that the drought has not been broken yet and farmers are still in dire need of more rain let us be thankful for what we have just received. It is indeed so refreshing to smell cleaner air, to hear the tyres of vehicles sloshing through water on the roads and to already see little green shoots beginning to sprout in our gardens. The bonus of the snow that has fallen so close to our city has brought with it so much of excitement to both adults and children alike. Indeed this is a blessing from the God of all creation.

Makeup 101: FASHION Colour correcting Page 4

and Concealing Makeup essentials are endless and there are many products that aim at perfecting your complexion for that flawless finish. Foundation alone might not be enough to cover imperfections and that is where colour correcting comes in handy.

What is colour correcting ?

Red

Colour correcting is using different colours of correcting products to combat skin imperfections that are sometimes still visible under foundation. A colour corrector evens out the complexion.

Colour correctors come in liquid and cream forms and it is essential that you find one to suit your skin. If you require heavier coverage purchase a cream based product as they are long wearing. A little product is needed to correct an area and it is important to not cake on too much product as it makes it difficult to blend into the skin and it can be visible through your foundation. Once you have applied the corrector foundation you might still need to brighten up the area and the next step is to apply concealer over that. Concealers are very similar to correctors but they come in shades to match your skin tone and most brands stock concealers and foundations in the same shades. Concealers are mostly used under the eye if you have dark circles and on other pigmented areas. If you want to brighten up the area the around your eye (after using a corrector and foundation) you should use concealer a shade lighter than your skin tone. Concealer can be used to cover imperfections if they don’t require heavy coverage, but for this you must always use a concealer that is the same shade as your skin. Budget and high end brands keep corrector palettes which have all the shades displayed in the image above. It is better to invest in palette as it works out cheaper than purchasing individual products.

With August being woman’s month I am going to tackle an issue that pertains to the everyday woman. As women we are faced with many challenges. You might be a working mother who has no time for herself, a new mother who has lost all her confidence due to weight gain or even a single woman who is in a rut. None of these situations are particularly easy and apart from ones confidence taking a knock ones appearance tends to suffer. I have decided to compile a few tips that can help one look put together despite their inadequacies. •

Always make sure that you are well groomed. Make time for waxing/laser appointments if you require them. Visit a hairdresser every three months and if you lead a busy life make sure that you get your cut in a way that’s manageable and easy to style.

shape. Don’t ever wear clothes that are too small or even too big for that matter. Always remember if you dress inappropriately it is the most noticeable thing about your appearance.

Invest in simple classic clothing pieces that you can just throw on in a hurry but still appear stylish. Purchase neutral tones (black, nude and grey) and steer clear from neon’s and animal prints.

Wear lipstick, even if you don’t wear any other makeup. Lipstick adds a pop of colour and brightens up your face instantly.

Stand up straight. Good posture is essential for a well put together appearance.

I am a great believer in the “If you look good you feel good” philosophy. Try to not let your challenges or hardships remember you are one of the strongest species, God made you that way. “Strong women- May we know them. May we raise them. May we be them”Unknown

Put them down very gently on the grid, do not press on them, do not handle them any more than is necessary, and turn them with extreme care. Start on very high heat to seal them quickly, hopefully before they have the chance to ‘sink’ into the grid. Braai for about 8 minutes in total.

Sauté the onion in the butter and oil for about 4 minutes. Add the biltong to the pan and let it sweat for a minute or 2. Add the salt and pepper and half of the cream and stir through. Sprinkle the beef stock over the contents of the pan and stir through. Add the rest of the cream, stir and let simmer whilst you braai the steaks until you are happy with the consistency of the sauce. Braai the steaks until medium rare and serve the sauce on the steak.

Nothing awkward: 2016 Peugeot 208 GT Line a/t

MOTORING PAGES

By Gordon Hall

Some people are odd; like those who drop the steering wheel ‘way down, then whine that its rim blocks their view of the tops of the dials. But when Peugeot raised the instrument panel on its 208, in order to overcome that, writers at a leading publication complained about its “challenging driving position.” There is nothing awkward about the driving position in this car; it’s just that certain folk hate change.

Speaking of which, Peugeot introduced a facelifted front end and new tail lamps for its 208s last September and rationalised the range. That’s business-speak for drastic pruning. The previous nine-car line-up offered five engines including a diesel and a hot little turbo-boosted 1600 GTi.

The new range consists of four models using variations on a pair of PureTech three-pot mills. The unblown one-litre returns in an entry-level Pop Art model and the 1199 cc triple is back in natural and boosted formats. These power a 1.2 Active and a pair of 1.2 GT Line models – manual and automatic.

Peugeot calls the autobox EAT6 (Efficient

Automatic Transmission six-speed) while Aisin Warner, its developers, call it AWTF-80 SC. Controlled electronically, it uses a torque converter but mimics a twin-clutch ‘box in the way it holds the next gear ready until one clutch disengages and the next one takes over. User-friendly, it displays which gear it’s in, holds the most suitable ratio for prevailing circumstances, never hunts, and kicks down easily when you need it to. Possibly not as razor sharp as some twin-clutch units, it nonetheless comfortably outperforms others. Its 81-kW turbo-motor powers a perky little car (0-100 in 9.8 seconds) that drives and handles beautifully. Acknowledging its GT Line label, the engine snarls gently when pushed but isn’t obtrusive. We’ll miss the “proper” GTi but, performance-wise, it’s too close to Peugeot’s 308 GT for comfort. Two tiny buttons on the central console offer “snow” and “sport” settings that alter throttleand gearbox responses. Each one is a simple select-deselect that switches between the labelled function and “normal” when pressed.

We used the snow button to imitate Eco mode found on other cars. Automatic stop-and-start is standard.

The back seat could be a bit challenging for hulking brutes but it’s usable. The boot is neat, square, easy to load or unload and of useful size. Its interior is lit; the spare under the floorboard is a fully sized alloy and the 2/3:1/3 seat backs can be collapsed from behind. Lefties will appreciate the ambidextrous pull-down handles. Inside, it’s practically the same as before so main instruments are still analogue, the 9.7” i-Cockpit touch pad is easy to use and the glove box is still French-tiny. But it’s a comfortable interior with nicely shaped cloth-and-leather seats (both front chairs adjust for height) and enough headroom for tall drivers. Fit and finish is up to the usual Peugeot standard. Most of the expected safety- and convenience kit is fitted, but you’ll have to do without a reversing camera unfortunately. But that’s all. You are getting an energetic compact car with automatic transmission, a decent boot and upmarket fit and finish, for only R305 000 after all. The Legendary Bristol Bullet By Gordon Hall

Here’s a conversation stopper for the next time you’re surrounded by pompous twits artfully name-dropping which fancy cars they drive: “Bristol,” you intone quietly, “a Bullet, actually.” And the chances of being in the same conversation with another Bullet owner are fewer than 70 out of millions.

Hand-built in Chichester, England, it celebrates 70 years of fine, bespoke British sports cars. Its name, Bullet, was chosen to honour the Bristol Aeroplane Company’s famous racing biplanes of the early 1920s.

By the end of WWll Bristol was a major supplier of fighting aircraft to the British government, so when hostilities ended, the company turned its expertise and manufacturing capacity to producing luxury cars. Always light, fast, luxurious, powerful and exclusive, they were hand built in limited quantities for gentlefolk who demanded the best. There is an urban legend that, like Ferrari in the early days, one needed the personal approval of the Chairman before one’s order could be accepted.

Be that as it may, Bristol’s latest offering, the Bullet, draws its bold design from decades of engineering innovation and heritage - with wings, front grille and bonnet all clues to the company’s roots as an aircraft manufacturer.

The 4.8-litre, V8 engine is supplied by BMW, with which the company has a long history, and “finished” by Bristol. Details are confidential. Six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes are similarly ex-BMW.

Much like the latest aircraft, Bullet’s body is manufactured from bespoke carbon-fibre composites to achieve high strength, rigidity and low weight. Where metals are used, high-grade

aluminium is preferred with only the roll-hoop structure being of high strength steel. Dashboard panelling is offered in classic wood, a modern herringbone carbon-fibre weave or, for ultimate refinement, a unique hand-laid unidirectional carbon-fibre weave. The sports seating is contoured for support and comfort over long distances, then hand trimmed in the finest British hides. Infotainment: A capacitive multi-touch information centre embedded into the dashboard provides such conveniences as digital radio and phone connectivity. A dedicated application connects supported devices via Bluetooth and WiFi. The facts, briefly: 275 kilowatts; 490 Nm; kerb mass 1100 kg; maximum speed 250 km/h; zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds; price “less than” £250 000. Reasons for the cautious pricing indicator are because production is only set to begin early in 2017 and cars can be customised to suit individual preferences.

Finally, from Ian Wallace, Bristol Cars’ marketing manager: “The engineering team invested significant effort to make sure the powertrain is well suited to the specific application and it embodies all characteristics defining a Bristol. First impressions are of ample torque - long a hallmark of our cars. When pushed further however, power delivery is linear throughout the rev range; giving drivers a choice between relaxed motoring or sporting performance. “Bullet is a celebration of 70 years of motoring sophistication. We have therefore strictly limited this model to 70 numbered chassis’. Demand has been high following the launch and we strongly suggest that those who wish to secure a car do so as soon as possible. Production is due to begin in early 2017, with allocation on a first come, first served basis. There will be no further production of Bullet subsequent to the 70 cars.”

It is said that women dress, not to please men, but to gain acceptance by other women. Men, on the other hand, dress for practicality. Whether that’s to impress potential conquests, or simply to look respectable in public, depends on motivation.

Centre ension usp S nd

Buying motorcars is apparently a different ball game. According to a recent UK survey all buyers agree that their first consideration is price but beyond that, gender roles reverse. Women buy for practicality with fuel consumption, or long-term running costs, being uppermost. Men, says the survey, buy for image or “what will my mates think?” When asked about the scariest aspects of car buying, women worried about checking that the vehicle was sound, while men fretted about price negotiation.

The fact is that the average customer, male or female, doesn’t buy very often and lacks in-depth technical or financial knowledge. In such circumstances, the issues involved can make the process stressful, and with good reason: Almost half of all used vehicles checked by My Car Check, a leading UK vehicle verification service, have flags (outstanding finance, theft, recalls or write-off) against them.

Responses to questions about one’s own driving ability reveal classic male bravado. Women are happy to be described as ‘competent’ – having the necessary ability – whereas men believe, “I am a good driver,” describes them better.

The final question, on driving situations, unites the sexes. It seems that most drivers, male or female, find one-way streets and roundabouts extremely stressful.

Rio 2016: World Records Rio 2016 round-up: Wayde van Niekerk breaks Michael Johnson’s 400m record, while "Ultimate Olympian" Michael Phelps retires. An incredible variety of significant world records were set at the Rio 2016 Olympics over the course of the weekend. Here Guinness World Records shines a spotlight on some of the amazing feats that have been achieved at the Games over the past few days. Fastest run 400 metres (male) South Africa’s star athletes, Wayde van Niekerk, smashed Michael Johnson’s (USA) 17-year-old record with a sensational time of 43.03 seconds. The 24-year-old track runner, who carried his country’s flag at the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics, bettered the

record of 43.18 that was set by Johnson back in 1999. Some thought Michael Johnson's 400m record would last forever Swimming phenomenon Michael Phelps today officially announced his retirement after an impressive medal haul in Rio which has seen him extend his record for being the most decorated male Olympian of all time. The 31-year-old notched up an incredible five golds and one silver to bring his total medal count to 28 over the course of four Olympics. "The Baltimore Bullet" has competed in five Olympic Games but did not manage to get among the medals back in 2000 while swimming in Sydney. Of the 28 medals Phelps

16 years later, 35-year-old Anthony Ervin proves anything is possible! Only 37 countries have taken home more medals.

Oldest Olympic individual swimming gold medalist (male) At the age of 35 years and 78 days, Olympic veteran Anthony Ervin earned gold for Team USA in the 50 metres freestyle swimming competition on Friday – winning by just 1/100th of a second. Anthony has broken Michael Phelps’ record as the oldest Olympic individual swimming gold

Their other golds came in 1928, 1936, 1964-68, 1976, 1984-2008. (Germany's unprecedented streak of 7 consecutive team golds was finally ended at the London 2012 games when host nation Great Britain won by a point.) This team achievement led to a personal record for Isabell Werth, who has equalled Dr Reiner Klimke's long-standing record for the Most Olympic gold medals - Dressage, after winning her sixth. Jamaica's Usain Bolt set a record for the Most consective gold medals won in the 100 metre (male) after coming first in the race for the third time in a row, American swimming superstar Michael Phelps finished the 2016 Olympics with a 26th gold medal - the Most gold medals won at the Olympics (male) - and Team USA has the Most Olympic gold medals won by a country in a single discipline after one of its athletes won gold in long jump for the 22nd time.
