Letters to the editor Dear Editor

Dear Editor

I would like to take the time to congratulate all those who participated in the Comrades Marathon.

I wish to bid a sad but fond farewell to boxing legend Muhammed Ali.

I myself have never attempted it but I’m sure it is a gruelling task indeed. It takes a large amount of mental and physical stamina to get through a race of that sort so all participants must be highly commended for effort at the very least.

A lot of today’s youth may not know this but we spent a lot of our time watching this great man fight on TV or read about him in the news.

It is also a very proud time for South Africa, as a country, as a number of international participants flock to our beautiful city. It’s a good time for us to put on display all the wonders we have to offer. It is indeed a spectacular event not just for the participants but for us all as South Africans. So once again, well done to all runners and to everyone in SA who made the race worthwhile. Proudly South African Eustice “Frikkie” Van Der Westhuizen Pelham

Dear Editor

I would like to commend KZN Property Pages on hosting a very successful property conference at the Golden Horse Casino recently. The theme of the conference was “Unlock Your Potential” and it has given us valuable insight for the property market.

It was indeed a privilege to watch him fight and to know that we were watching history unfold.

I was one of the attendees and was very impressed, not only by the turnout, but more especially by the calibre of speakers at the function.

It is no secret that Ali will go down in history as the greatest boxer who ever lived. Even though he silently battled crippling Parkinson’s Disease, he still remained a true legend, making appearances at special events and taking time out to inspire the youth through the Muhammed Ali Centre and on various other platforms.

There was a good mix of speakers who spoke on topics ranging from property prices to motivational speeches. It was also really good to touch base with other property consultants and get in touch with the new and emerging property trends.

The world has lost a great man indeed and it is with great humanity, humility and dignity that we all mourn him.

It was an enjoyable event indeed and I look forward to attending next year.

May he Rest In Peace.

1. A woman gets on a bus with her baby. The bus driver says: ''Ugh, that's the ugliest baby I've ever seen!'' The woman walks to the rear of the bus and sits down, fuming. She says to a man next to her: ''The driver just insulted me!'' The man says: ''You go up there and tell him off. Go on, I'll hold your monkey for you.'' 2. ''I went to the zoo the other day, there was only one dog in it, it was a shitzu.'' 3. ''Dyslexic man walks into a bra'' 4. A young blonde woman is distraught because she fears her husband is having an affair, so she goes to a gun shop and buys a handgun. The next day she comes home to find her husband in bed with a beautiful redhead. She grabs the gun and holds it to her own head. The husband jumps out of bed, begging and pleading with her not to shoot herself. Hysterically the blonde responds to the husband, ''Shut up...you're next!'' 5. A classic Tommy Cooper gag ''I said to the Gym instructor "Can you teach me to do the splits?'' He said, ''How flexible are you?'' I said, ''I can't make Tuesdays'', was fifth.

RABIES ALERT IN

REACH FOR A DREAM’S

SOUTH AFRICA QUIZ Delay in rabies treatment can prove fatal

Thursday, 9 June 2016, Following the recent confirmation of several cases of rabid animals in Lanseria and Muldersdrift, in Gauteng, the public are advised to remain vigilant against rabies. “Any animal that does not have a complete record of rabies vaccinations could be an infection risk, and members of the public should think twice before approaching any animal which is not known to them, as it may carry this life-threatening disease,” warns Dr Pete Vincent of Netcare Travel Clinics and Medicross Tokai family medical and dental centre. “While Gauteng has not historically been a rabies hotspot, the recent discovery of jackals with rabies is a reminder to all of us to ensure our pets are regularly vaccinated against the rabies virus. Mongooses are some of the most common hosts of the virus, and these small mammals frequently visit domestic gardens, where they could potentially infect domestic pets.”

The virus is spread through the saliva of infected animals, either when they bite, or when their saliva comes into contact with an open wound or the eyes, nose or mouth of another animal or an individual. “Most often, people tend to associate rabies with images of dogs foaming at the mouth. In reality, however, a wide variety of mammals can carry the virus including cats, bats and even cattle, and it should also be noted that rabid animals do not necessarily foam at the mouth. While some rabid animals may become more aggressive, it is also not uncommon for wild animals with rabies to act uncharacteristically tame,” Dr Vincent explains.

Dr Vincent notes that rabies post-exposure vaccination usually involves a series of injections for a period of up to a month. “If treatment commences early, within 48 hours, and the full course is correctly administered, humans exposed to rabies will almost certainly not develop the disease. This is the one and only chance of preventing progression of the virus, as once a person develops clinical signs of rabies there is no cure and the condition is invariably fatal.”

COFFEE & DO COMBO

Wash the area thoroughly with soap and water, for at least 10 minutes, in an attempt to get rid of the virus. Consult a doctor immediately so that treatment is not delayed. Your doctor will likely give you a series of rabies vaccinations. Keep a record of the dates of each injection and be sure to complete the course.

Depending on the severity of the injury, your doctor may also inject rabies immunoglobulin around the wound. How to protect yourself and your family against rabies exposure: r r

It was a fun filled evening, that brought out the competitive spirits of all those who attended. The evening had lots of laughs, prizes and delicious food. However, even though it was a fun filled evening, there was a moment of seriousness we got to inform our guest about Reach For A Dream and the important work we do in helping inspire hope and fulfil the dreams of children fighting life threatening illnesses. Thanks to the generosity of those who attended the event we were able to raise money towards fulfil the dreams of children. Reach For A Dream was touched by the generosity of some members in the audience who pledge towards fulfilling the dreams of two children that were shared on the night, with one incredible R20 000 pledge.

Reach For A Dream on the 15th June 2016 held a successful Quiz night. The evening was MC’d by Neville Pillay and Rahul Brijnath.

“The good news is that rabies infection in humans is preventable. With timeous treatment and adherence to the recommended precautions, we can all protect ourselves against this disease,” Dr Vincent concludes.

“The best means of protection against rabies is to r avoid contact with stray, wild or unfamiliar animals and to ensure that pets and livestock are vaccinated. If a r person is licked or bitten by an animal that could potentially be rabid, it is vital to seek immediate r medical attention.”

PULSING WITH PROTEIN POWER

FOOD

Page 4

PULSES, which includes beans, peas and lentils, are packed with nutrition and are a good source of vegetarian, as opposed to animal, protein. They also provide about twice the amount of protein that is found in cereals such as wheat, oats, barley and rice. All part of the legume family, pulses have many advantages when added to the diet as they contain various nutrients, are very affordable and, as they do not need a lot of water to grow, they are environmentally friendly. Some of the health benefits include a high-fibre source rich in disease-fighting folate and other B vitamins as well as minerals such as iron and potassium. Research has shown that eating pulses regularly can reduce cholesterol, thereby helping to prevent heart disease and strokes. Dried split peas, beans and lentils are economical to buy and store. Before cooking dried beans, spread them out and remove any dirt or damaged beans, then rinse in cold water. Pre-soaking them will shorten the cooking time and they will double in volume. It is best to discard the soaking water and cook from scratch in fresh water, as this will improve the digestibility. Lentils and split peas will not need to be pre-soaked, but should be picked over and rinsed before cooking to remove any debris. The following recipes are easy to prepare and perfect to serve on cold winter nights:

Chickpea, Tomato and Spinach Curry r 1 chopped onion r 1 tsp yeast extract such as Marmite r 2 chopped garlic cloves r 4 tbsp red lentils r 3cm grated ginger r 6 tbsp coconut cream r 6 ripe tomatoes r 1 head broccoli, broken into small florets r 1/2 tbsp oil r 400g can chickpeas, drained r 1 tsp ground cumin r 100g baby spinach leaves r 2 tsp ground coriander r 1 halved lemon r 1 tsp turmeric r 1 tbsp toasted sesame seed r pinch chilli flakes r 1 tbsp chopped cashew, to mix with sesame

Puree onion, garlic, ginger and tomatoes in food processor or blender. Heat oil in a large pan. Add spices, fry for a few seconds and add puree and yeast extract. Bubble together for 2 minutes, then add lentils and coconut cream. Cook until lentils are tender, then add broccoli and cook for 4 minutes. Stir in chickpeas and spinach, squeeze over lemon and swirl through sesame and cashew mixture. Serve with brown rice.

Lentil and Sweet Potato Curry

r 2 tbsp vegetable or olive oil r 1 chopped red onion r 1 tsp cumin seed r 1 tsp mustard seeds r 1 tbsp medium curry powder r 100g red or green lentils (or mixed) r 2 medium sweet potatoes (peeled and cut in chunks) r 500ml vegetable stock r 400g can chopped tomatoes r 400g can chickpeas, drained r 1/4 small pack coriander (optional) r natural yoghurt and naan bread Heat oil in a large pan, add onion and cook until softened. Add spices and cook for 1 minute, then stir in lentils, sweet potatoes, stock and chopped tomatoes. Bring to the boil, then cover and simmer for 20 minutes until lentils and sweet potatoes are tender. Add the chickpeas and heat through. Season, sprinkle with coriander, if you like, and serve with seasoned yoghurt and naan bread.

Vegan Lentil Soup This simple vegan lentil soup recipe comes together quickly with mostly pantry ingredients. Be sure to have your ingredients prepped and ready before you start cooking! Recipe yields four big bowls of soup.

4r Transfer 2 cups of the soup to a blender. Protect your hand from steam with a tea towel placed over the lid and purée the soup until smooth. Pour the puréed soup back into the pot and add the chopped greens. Cook for 5 more minutes, or until the greens have softened to your liking.

INGREDIENTS r ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil r 1 medium yellow or white onion, chopped r 2 carrots, peeled and chopped r 4 garlic cloves, pressed or minced r 2 teaspoons ground cumin r 1 teaspoon curry powder r ½ teaspoon dried thyme r 1 28-ounce can of diced tomatoes, drained r 1 cup brown or green lentils, picked over and rinsed r 4 cups vegetable broth r 2 cups water r 1 teaspoon salt, more to taste r Pinch red pepper flakes r Freshly ground black pepper r 1 cup chopped fresh collard greens or kale, tough ribs removed r Juice of ½ to 1 medium lemon, to taste

5r Remove the pot from heat and stir in the juice of half of a lemon. Taste and season with more salt, pepper and/or lemon juice until the flavors really sing. Serve immediately.

INSTRUCTIONS 1r Warm the olive oil in a large Dutch oven or pot over medium heat. One-fourth cup olive oil may seem like a lot, but it adds a lovely richness and heartiness to this nutritious soup. 2r Once the oil is shimmering, add the chopped onion and carrot and cook, stirring often, until the onion has softened and is turning translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic, cumin, curry powder and thyme. Cook until fragrant while stirring constantly, about 30 seconds. Pour in the drained diced tomatoes and cook for a few more minutes, stirring often, in order to enhance their flavor. 3r Pour in the lentils, broth and the water. Add 1 teaspoon salt and a pinch of red pepper flakes. Season generously with freshly ground black pepper. Raise heat and bring the mixture to a boil, then partially cover the pot and reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer. Cook for 30 minutes, or until the lentils are tender but still hold their shape.

Domino’s Pizza Feeds Young Minds This Youth Month

IN June, Domino’s Pizza fed young minds and spirits through unique learning experiences.

Domino’s Pizza invited local schools to pack away their books and to don an apron for one day. The day will consist of Domino’s Pizza staff members taking the kids through an induction exercise including the exciting history of pizza, food hygiene, food preparation, and storage as well as the nutritional benefits of using freshly prepared dough and toppings.

Domino’s Pizza hosted a WhizzKids week from 13 to 15 June in stores across the country. The initiative saw Domino’s Pizza stores teaming up with local schools to grow their culinary and business skills.

Following their induction is a tour of the kitchen and preparation area so that the kids can familiarise themselves with the ingredients the timers, utensils, and the operation of a fully functioning kitchen. From there the fun begins as each child gets to put their culinary skills to use by preparing their own pizza under the supervision of the Domino’s Pizza staff.

DUCT Enviro Clean-Up Day

About 300 fun runners took part in the Msunduzi Green Corridor River fun run at Camps Drift on Sunday, 5th June, to took to mark World Environment Day. Participants included teachers and learners from 15 DUCT school eco clubs and students from Durban University of Techology’s Green Campus Initiative. The event also highlighted the sharply declining health of the Msunduzi River due to sewage, solid waste and industrial pollution, and an urgent need to find solutions. The event at the Natal Canoe Club (NCC) featured a 6-km river KZN Trail Running-designed trail that was cleared by DUCT River Care teams, for runners to experience the full length of the Camps Drift. The event underscored DUCT’s vision of a partnership with government, business and civil society to establish a Green Corridor along the banks of the upper Msunduzi River. In its pilot phase, the project is supported by the WWF Nedbank Green Trust, and currently focuses on two river health “hotspots” in Ashdown and Imbali. The work includes environmental education and sewer monitoring with a longer term view of facilitating job creation through conservation agriculture, greening and river care services.

Mahomed Moosa (Chota) Motala (1921 – 2005) Dr Mahomed Moosa Motala has an arterial road named after him in Pietermaritzburg, the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal. It does not bear his full name nor does it carry the honorific, doctor. It is simply known as Chota Motala Road. ‘Chota’ means ‘small’ in Urdu, as in younger brother or uncle, and this was how Motala was affectionately known by his family, friends and political activists.

There was a lengthy debate in the City Coucil’s Street Re-naming Committee on what version of his name to use. The simple, unadorned ‘Chota Motala’ won the day. Motala was one of those rare individuals with no pretensions who truly could be called a ‘man of the people.’ He did not capitalise on his status as a medical doctor, nor as a veteran of the political struggle. Even when he became democratic South Africa’s first Ambassador to Morocco, he told journalist Susan Segar that what he missed most about Pietermaritzburg was its people. Motala was 83 years old when he died, after a long illness, at his Mountain Rise home on Friday, 20 May 2005. Born in Dundee on 14 June 1921, he matriculated at Sastri College in Durban in 1938. He studied medicine in India, after stowing away on a ship at the age of 18 to get there. Motala returned to South Africa in 1948 and immediately became involved in politics. He told Segar, ‘It was inevitable. There could never have been another option. I arrived from India, fresh from the struggle to end British rule. I had been loosely involved as a student activist in the Indian National Congress. It was just never a case of now I’m a doctor, I’m going to buy a smart car and a beautiful house.’

Nontuthuko Langa has put herself and Pietermaritzburg on the map after her two month stint in the fashion capital of the world- Milan. 25-year-old Langa graduated from the School of Fashion and Design in 2014, after which, she took up a two month study course at the SAE Academy in Italy. Langa who specialises in male designs said the old buildings and food in Italy inspired her creativity.. She said the geometry of the old buildings was very refreshing and the pasta was to die for! She said the techniques used overseas opened up a whole new avenue of design and she learnt a lot through the use of a mood board. Langa described a mood board as that which described your mood while looking for inspiration to design your next garment. You get to pin fabric and pictures and colours and whatever else is inspiring your design at that time to your mood board, and when you step back and take a look at your mood board, its almost as if you can see your design come to life. She said in SA theres a culture of rushing to the end product and not enough time is spent thinking about the concept of the design. Langa has a number of accolades to her name including top 3 in the Golden Horse Sprint Day, Best Mens Design and top 30 in the younger designer category at the Durban July. She is also exhibiting at the Durban Fashion Fair. Langa was a part of 21 steps, is part of the KZN Fashion Council and is a mentor for young fashion designers. She said fashion is more of a lifestyle than a hobby or a job. She is glad to have attended a prestigious school like the school of fashion and design with good lecturers. “Its been a long, rough road, but Ive had to be strong and know what ive wanted from the get go. I have learnt proper time management and my advice to all aspiring designers is always be the best you can be, said Langa.

HOMECOPY & GARDEN NATURE WITH A ROCKERY Page 15

By: Rosemary Antolik

ROCKS are a natural part of the landscape and can be used in the garden in the form of walls, paths, patios and, of course, rockeries. An area where no other plants will grow will often be perfect for developing a rock garden, as will a naturally rocky corner. They are an ideal way to disguise or make use of a slope in your garden, or to give a bit of shape to a level area. July heralds the middle of summer and Rockeries should be built in a sunny with it come two gorgeous flowers that spot with, if possible, a slightly shady are unique not only in appearance but area to allow a wider selection of in growth as well. Characteristics Of These Flowers These two July birth flowers differ greatly in appearance. The water lily makes its home on the surface of water and has a large lily pad with a single flower in the center. These majestic plants are often referred to as “Queen of the Water and the flowers almost look like a crown and is also called a Lotus flower. The delphinium, on the other hand, might look like a single flower but is made up of numerous tiny flowers shaped like a poker. Other names for the Delphinium / Larkspur include Knight’s Spur, Lark’s Heel or Lark’s Claw. Although the Delphinium and Larkspur look very similar, there are subtle differences between the two. You only have to look at the delicate flowers to see this. The Delphinium has trumpet-like flowers while the Larkspurs flower is more open without the trumpet-like tube of the Delphinium. Symbolism, Meaning and Significance of Water Lilies As the national flower of Bangladesh, the water lily has long been a symbol of life and love. Throughout Eastern culture the water lily has been a symbol used to convey emotions, ideas and experiences ranging from beauty to enlightenment. Not only is it a symbol of life and love but is also seen as a symbol of unity. For Buddhists and Hindus, the water lily is an important religious symbol. When a water lily is used in a bridal bouquet it represents purity of heart. Symbolism, Meaning and Significance of The Larkspur / Delphinium According to history the Larkspur was originally used as a deterrent for scorpions. The Larkspur is known as a symbol of an open heart and devoted attachment. Since the shape of these flowers resembles parts of the Lark (bird), it is no wonder that these beautiful flowers also symbolize swiftness and lightness after the Lark in flight. Interesting Facts

A single water lily flower not only changes color from white to deep pink but is the only flower that bears fruit while it is in full bloom. Native Americans used the Larkspur / Delphinium to make blue dye while some Europeans ground the flowers for making ink. Both these flowers are special in their own right making July a very special month..

When choosing which plants to grow in your rockery, bear in mind that they are planted as a garden feature and not for cut flowers. You can choose small, dainty and slow-growing plants. Flowering plants such as dwarf zinnias, dwarf marigolds, dwarf phlox, Namaqualand and Barberton daisies, forget-me-nots, pansies, petunias and alyssum are ideal for rock gardens. THERE have been alarming reports that, worldwide, bees are in danger of becoming extinct. Widespread colony collapse disorder is due to environmental stress stemming from the overuse of pesticides as well as parasitic attacks, according to experts. This affects not just the honeybees but also our food supply.

As the bees' food source dwindles, will they turn to junk food? We all know how addictive junk food can be, but do bees fall victim to the same temptations? Beekeepers in urban environments need to worry about what their bees are making honey from, otherwise they could end up jarring honey made from processed sugars. The good news, though, is that bees have better self-control than people. According to a recently published study, if they have an option, bees will usually go with the healthy choice. Although the exception to the rule, apparently a beekeeper in America found her combs filled with bright red honey! Howl like a Coyote: 2016 Ford Mustang 5.0 GT Printable transport By Gordon Hall

solution: Light Rider By Gordon Hall

It’s after midnight. Your wife has reached “that” stage of pregnancy and absolutely has to have Blueberry ice cream and pickled onions. Right now. Italians craft exotic cars. The British build boutique machines. Germans are about corporate power in dinner jackets. But only the Americans successfully do Badass. Look to Chrysler’s big SRTs - 300C and Jeep Grand Cherokee, as examples. Now there’s a third; Ford’s 2016 Mustang with its throbbing, 302 cubic-inch V8. It pulses out 306 kilowatts and 530 Newton-metres to blast through the traps in 4.8 seconds. That’s Aston-Martin, Maserati and Porsche territory, Elmer. If that’s too rich for your blood, there’s an alternative. It’s a little-bitty, 2.3-litre, four-cylinder EcoBoost motor that makes do with just 233 kW and 430 Nm to complete the dash in 5.8 seconds. That’s pdq too. Just sayin’. Ford calls this V8, 4951 cc, engine “Coyote.” It was developed to replace the old 4.6, while retaining most of its measurements and fittings, and to fit with existing tooling and assembly requirements. Built to compete with GM’s 6.2-litre LS3 Camaro motor and Chrysler’s 6.4-litre Hemi ESF, it comes very close, thanks to sophisticated engineering design. The local model range is simple. We get the two engines already described, two body styles (fastback and convertible) and two six-speed transmissions (manual and automatic). Your choices are both motors in fastback - manual or auto, or both motors in convertible – automatic only. While standard Mustangs perform and handle pretty decently, Ford SA decided to spare its customers any sleepless nights spent lying awake and wondering, “if only?” In the US, buyers are offered an optional, $2500, Performance Pack. FMCSA threw it in free so you don’t have to ask for it. It consists of uprated front brakes (352 mm for 2.3 and 380 mm for 5.0) with four-piston calipers for the

smaller motor and six-piston Brembo grabbers for the V8, special 19-inch wheels and tyres, heavy duty front springs, special chassis tuning, a higher-capacity radiator, limited slip differential, a K-brace linking the front suspension towers to the cross member in front of the firewall and, for fastback only, an upsized rear sway bar. Warning: Don’t buy the V8 if you’re naturally shy – total strangers will stop to talk, kids will photograph it, young women will lust for it, little old ladies will studiously ignore it and neighbours will know exactly when you arrive and leave. That Detroit Iron Rumble from the cross-plane V8 is barely socially acceptable – be used to it. As indicated by the zero to 100 km/h time, this thing hauls ass. It also sits flat through the tightest bends, thanks to anti-squat and anti-dive geometry, and hangs on forever. The automatic box works well and manual override (sport mode and paddles) makes it even better. It isn’t practical as a family car because the back seat is designed for tiny people. On the other hand, it’s possibly the most beautifully sculpted parcel shelf in all of Motordom. Further, the boot is decently sized and accessible and the backrests fold down to extend cargo area. The Americans wouldn’t tolerate anything less.

You don’t want to wake the neighbours, so firing up the Mustang isn’t an option. Nor is wheeling out the Hog – both are too loud for early morning errands, so how about the Light Rider? Not related to the talkative TransAm of television fame, it’s whisper-quiet and the soul of discretion. 3D-printed in a sophisticated aluminium-magnesium-scandium alloy trademarked as Scalmalloy, Light Rider is a wispy little motorbike that would look more at home in a science museum than whispering through the suburbs. Powered by a six-kilowatt electric motor, it spools up to 45 km/h in three seconds before charging to its maximum velocity of 80 clicks. For the technically minded, maximum torque of 14 Nm is developed at 6000 rpm, its 45-48 Volt battery recharges from household mains and it has an operating range of up to 70 kilometres per charge. The battery is housed within the “fuel tank” that’s also 3D printed, but out of a plastic material. It contributes 3.7 kilograms to the overall mass of the cycle that weighs in slenderly at 35 kg. Light Rider is made by APWorks, a division of aerospace giant Airbus. Its six-kilogram frame is produced

by direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) and then printed with special DMLS printers. The individual parts are joined, using tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding techniques, then glass-bead blasted to achieve a matte finish. It’s manufactured at APWorks’ production site in Taufkirchen, south of Munich. To keep weight low, its structure is hollow and achieves high strength via intelligent design rather than by adding additional material. The light tubular frame permits easy routing of wiring and cables while keeping everything tidy. APWorks used an algorithm to optimise Light Rider’s structure in order to minimise mass yet ensure the frame is sturdy enough to handle everyday loads and stresses. The resulting motorcycle looks more like an organic exoskeleton than a machine; a deliberate design objective that combines bionic structures with established principles of physics to deliver a strong, yet lightweight, result. “The complex, branched, hollow structure couldn’t have been produced by conventional production technologies such as milling or welding,” said Joachim Zettler, CEO of Airbus APWorks GmbH. “Advances in additive layer manufacturing (ALM) helped us to realise the bionic design we envisioned without having to make major changes. With these technologies, limitations facing conventional manufacturing disappear,” he concluded. APWorks is offering a limited production run of 50 Light Riders at an estimated €50 000 each. Almost-forgotten game changer: 25 years of Volvo

Pioneers are usually better known for practicality than mere prettiness. So it was with Volvo 850, “the car that changed everything.” Introduced on 11th June 1991, it boasted four world-firsts: The transverse five-cylinder engine, its Delta link semi-independent rear axle, integrated side-impact protection system (SIPS) and height adjustable front seat belts. The first model presented was the 850 GLT, with its 20-valve naturally aspirated engine producing 170 hp (127 kW). During development, Volvo strove to make it a lively car that delivered great driving pleasure while achieving “correct” intake and exhaust sounds. The next important 850, presented in February 1993, was the Estate. Its typically Volvo features included an abruptly ending rear section, for maximum load capacity, and extended vertical taillights covering the entire D-post. During development, Chief Designer Jan Wilsgaard used a mock up on which candidate taillights could be removed and replaced for comparison. It subsequently won Japan’s prestigious “1994 Good Design Grand Prize” as well as the Italian “Most beautiful estate” award. The range was expanded, before long, with various

engine options. Dressed in distinctive yellow, and attracting widespread attention when presented at the 1994 Geneva Motor Show, the T-5R stood out like an exclamation mark on wheels. Its turbocharged, intercooled, engine produced 240 hp (179 kW), 330 Nm of torque and a rush on the order books. Equipment included special spoilers, a square exhaust pipe and 17-inch Titan alloy wheels. Intended for a production run of only 2500, the yellow cars sold out in a couple of weeks, so the same number of black cars were produced before being followed by a final batch of 2500 dark green T-5Rs. Volvo followed up with an extremely eye-catching return to the racetrack that year. Both factory-backed 850s that drove up to the starting line for the season premiere, at Thruxton in southern England, were Estates. Having a “van” in Europe’s most prestigious standard car racing series, the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) soon attracted enormous attention. Volvo invested heavily, alongside Tom Walkinshaw Racing, in the cars driven by Swede Rickard Rydell and Dutchman Jan Lammers. The following year, estate cars were effectively rendered illegal by rule changes, so Volvo switched to saloons. Rydell claimed third place in that season’s championship. From the outset, the press called Volvo’s 850 “the world’s safest car” and in 1995 it introduced another world first in terms of safety; side-impact airbags. Possessing a chunky kind of handsomeness only diehard fans could love, Volvo’s 850 was nonetheless a game changer that deserves to be remembered.

Your dealership service department is the top determinant of customer satisfaction and loyalty, according to a recently released J.D. Power (UK) Customer Service Index (CSI) study. Among highly satisfied customers (overall satisfaction scores of 900 or higher on a 1000-point scale), 92 percent say they “definitely will” return to the same facility for future warranty service (work they do not have to pay for), and 83 percent say the same for future paid servicing (work they do have to pay for). When satisfaction slips just slightly (800-899 points), intended loyalty drops to 74 percent for warranty work and 58 percent for paid service. “When car dealerships get the service department’s customer satisfaction equation right, they earn incredibly loyal customers,” said Dr. Axel Sprenger, senior director of European automotive operations at J.D. Power. “The service experience is instrumental in driving sales, because it’s probably the customer’s most recent contact with the dealership prior to shopping for a new vehicle.” According to the study, 78 percent of highly satisfied customers say they “definitely will” purchase or lease their next new vehicle from the servicing dealership. When service satisfaction drops to 800-899, intended purchase loyalty dips to 44 percent then tumbles to 23 when satisfaction is between 600 and 799 points. Additional key findings: Service Advisor Can Make or Break Satisfaction: When the service advisor greets customers immediately upon their arrival, it can improve service satisfaction by as much as 48 points, yet 61 percent indicated that they had to wait for a greeting. When the service advisor knows the customer’s vehicle history and is

Customers Value Transparency on Work Done and Costing: Overall satisfaction averages 742 points among the 81 percent of customers who received an explanation of the various charges, compared with 653 for those who did not receive one. Satisfaction and Brand Rankings: Overall customer satisfaction with dealer service, based on the first three years of ownership, averaged 761 in the premium brand segment in 2016 (the same as in 2015) and 744 among volume brands, up from 737 the previous year. Mercedes-Benz ranks highest among premium brands, with a score of 774, an 18-point improvement from 2015, when it ranked fourth. Next are Land Rover (773) and Audi (761). Toyota ranks highest among volume brands, with a score of 776, a 17-point improvement from 2015. Honda ranks second (775), followed by Kia (765), MINI (757) and Suzuki (753). Background: The study, now in its second year, measures UK customer satisfaction with service experiences for maintenance and repair work done at franchised dealerships. It examines five factors (listed in order of importance): Service quality (26 percent); Service initiation (23 percent); Service advisor (19 percent); Vehicle pick-up (17 percent); and Service facility (16 percent). The study was based on 8,478 respondents who registered new vehicles between February 2013 and April 2015.

Also in the race to bring HMD products to market are NUVIZ, a US startup that’s working on a universal device attachable to the chin piece of any existing full-face or modular helmet, while Russian firm Livemap is building its technology into modular helmets.

Thankfully, relief is almost here. Helmet-mounted heads-up displays (HUDs) built specifically for motorcycle use have become reality. Skully Systems, an American company, is ready to ship its AR-1 helmet that provides a commanding view of the world around you while placing vital information a mere blink away. A built-in 180-degree rearview camera clues you in to what’s hanging onto your tailpipe while a small, semi-transparent screen, placed just below your right eye, provides relevant operating information at a glance. The most vital data is obviously speed, but depending on options chosen, this could be supplemented by navigational aids, weather updates, tyre pressures, engine information including rpm, acceleration data, coolant temperature and oil temperature and pressure, or even your playlist.

Other developers are Intelligent Cranium, with its camera-based surround views and other data projected onto a pair of screens and Reevu, a company that has offered mirror-based rearview technology in helmets since 2004. Its GPS-based HUD will be an overlay on the existing face screen used to display the rearward view. Connectivity solutions range from Bluetooth to downloadable iOS and Android apps with projected prices ranging from US $1300 to $2000. All expect to deliver during 2016. Available for a while now, is British company Bike Systems’ BikeHUD. It’s modular and comprises a viewer, handlebar controller and mini computer. The HUD consists of a viewing monocle attachable to any existing helmet and adjusted to fit below the user’s left eye. Transmission is via Bluetooth dongle. Price is about £350 plus postage and there’s a 100-Pound installation fee for buyers nervous about DIY. Because the above are still in development, or only recently released, no SA distributors have yet been appointed.

Pick-Up Process Is Important: Service customers in the UK spend an average of nine minutes to finish paperwork and collect their vehicles after maintenance or repairs. Overall satisfaction is highest (778) among the 53 percent who said the pick-up process took five, or fewer, minutes. Satisfaction drops to 750 among the 28 percent who say the process took six to ten minutes and dips to 714 among the nine percent who say it took 11 to 15 minutes.

BMW Motorrad showed its prototype at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Based on HUD technology used in their cars, the system will, like Skully’s, be built into helmets but include a clear viewing screen placed directly in front of the rider’s right eye. Release date is given as “within the next few years.”

Husqvarna Motorcycles is recalling specific frame numbers of 2016 FC 250 machines to authorised Husqvarna dealers for a complete crankshaft replacement. Following market investigations by Husqvarna, it was determined that deviations in the connecting rod’s manufacturing process could result in early failure and fracturing of the conrod under certain load conditions.

The company has therefore issued instructions to replace the complete crankshaft on affected bikes. Owners of 2016 FC 250 models are being informed by personal letter and asked to immediately contact an authorised Husqvarna Motorcycles dealer to arrange an appointment for replacement. Customers can check online in the ‘Service’ area of the Husqvarna Motorcycles website to determine if their motorcycle is affected by this recall. Crankshaft replacement will be carried out at no cost to motorcycle owners, but must be performed by authorised Husqvarna Motorcycles dealers only.

Bad Omens Ahead For Rio 2016? With the 2016 Summer Olympic Games slotted to start on Aug. 5, Rio is scrambling to finish preparations for the Games. Unfortunately, as with many cities who have hosted past Olympics, Rio de Janeiro has experienced a number of setbacks. From the death of a jaguar that was part of the Olympic torch ceremony, to a collapsed bike path that killed two people, preparations for the Olympic Games are proving difficult for the Brazilian city.

They killed a jaguar During the Olympic torch ceremony in Manaus, Brazil, a leashed jaguar was killed. The jaguar was shot dead shortly after the ceremony on Monday when it approached an armed soldier.

Yashka Rabichand, of The Wykeham Collegiate Junior School, recently competed against representatives from all provinces at the Hopes Table Tennis Tournament where she emerged the overall winner in the U12 age group.

Twenty five Grade 6 girls from The Wykeham Collegiate recently completed a 2-day beach hike from Port Edward to Margate. The girls slept in tents at camp sites en-route and hiked during the day, covering a distance of 30kms over the 2 days. The group of 25 Grade 6’s that hiked from Port Edward to Margate accompanied by Ms Cathryn Calitz, Ms Mary-Lou Kemp and Mr Les Willows

Nineteen girls and a few staff members from The Wykeham Collegiate ran from the Durban City Hall to the school campus from Saturday night through to Sunday morning. They ran in relay groups of 2 and 3, changing over every 3kms. The girls finished their night relay run early on Sunday morning having enjoyed the novelty of running the Comrades route through the night – an unforgettable experience. The end is in sight – the girls and staff approaching TWC campus through the parking area

“We made a mistake in permitting the Olympic torch, a symbol of peace and unity, to be exhibited alongside a chained wild animal. This image goes against our beliefs and our values,” the local organizing committee Rio 2016 said in a statement to Reuters. "We guarantee that there will be no more such incidents at Rio 2016.”

Zika As the Zika virus continues to haunt Brazil, there are major concerns that holding the Olympics in Rio this year is a bad idea.

Two people dead after bike lane collapsed An 150-foot section of a bike path that sat high above the ocean ind Rio de Janeiro collapsed into the water in April, killing two people. The section was built as a legacy project for the Olympic Games and was opened three months prior to the collapse. According to AP, the bike path wasn't built to host Olympic events, but it was part of a road cycling route and connected the Ipanema and Copacabana beaches to the suburb where the Olympic Park is located.

Rio's subway system isn't ready A new subway expansion that will be used to transport passengers from Ipanema beach to the Olympic Park and Village in less than 15 minutes isn't ready. The expansion, Line 4, is an important infrastructural project for the Games' preparations. Without the expansion, visitors would have to travel over an hour through the mountains or use the bus system, all of which will worsen Rio's already over-crowded roads. Rodrigo Vieira, Rio de Janeiro's transportation head, told The Associated Press that the expansion would be finished in time, with around the clock shifts and 1,000 workers at each station.

Many critics have suggested that the games be canceled, and several athletes have already decided to drop out in fear of the virus. Ireland's golfer Rory McIlroy is the most recent dropout, joining fellow golfers Marc Leishman and Adam Scott, both Australians, and Vijay Singh, from Fiji. Despite the worries, Ricardo Barros, Brazil's health minister, insisted earlier this month that "there's almost zero risk" for the expected 350,000-500,000 foreign visitors of the Olympics.

Rio de Janeiro in "public calamity" On Friday, June 17, Rio de Janeiro's state government declared a state of "public calamity" and that emergency actions would need to take place to save Rio from a "total collapse in public safety, health, education, transport and environmental management," and to ensure that they can successfully host the Olympic Games. The Brazilian government is struggling to gather the estimated $10 billion on funds to prepare the country for the Games due to the country's two-year recession. Protests have broken out throughout the country over the use of funds as Brazilian citizens push for money to go toward hospitals, emergency services and schools instead. Rio's Mayor Eduardo Paes said in a statement Tuesday that the Olympics are not responsible for the country's economic woes.
