UNFORTUNATE TRAGEDY Family, friends and the local board at the Virgin Active Cascades Club were taken completely off guard by the tragic death of 19 year old, 708255

Muhammed Ridha Ismail.

The first year aspirant lawyer and B. Comm student of the PMB Varsity College had collapsed and died shortly within his morning visit to the Virgin Active Cascades Health club on Sunday, 16 October 2016. The young man intended to regain his strength after a series of heart complications accompanied by a successful cardiac operation earlier this year in April.

Noted to be an ambitious young man, Ismail’s sister Shahista as well as owner of Magnum Engineering & father Raffiek Ismail Khan both said that his death was completely unexpected BMW Approved Used Cars

His funeral was held on Sunday evening with over 2 000 people arriving to pay their last respects to this amazing young man. He will be dearly missed by family and friends and the memories they share with him will never grow old. The community mourns yet another loss of a young, ambitious individual. Varsity College Principal Kevin McShane spoke boldly about Muhammed as being one of the most diligent learners of the 2016 lot. This tragedy was a blow at both the staff and students of the institution. “Muhammed had joined VC at the beginning of this year. He served as a part of the student liaison body and made it his duty to help, server and go the extra mile for the students. He had registered for a higher certificate in business principles and practice and he had been doing fairly well considering he recently had a heart surgery, “said McShane.

and devastated their family with this sudden loss. “He was full of life, very ambitious, family-orientated and liked by all who knew him. He was known by many as “Rider” – a pet name that stuck with him for years. He was in his prime and had a bright future ahead of him. He felt that his quality of life was so much better after the operation and thought he was strong enough to continue training,” said Shahista.

During the course of this medical emergency the Health club was temporarily closed down and all members received a message informing them of the closure. We spoke to Virgin Active’s Head of Strategic Communications Les Aupiais and she stated, “We confirm that staff are fully trained in the club’s health and safety procedures and responded immediately to the emergency. Two doctors in the club at the time of the emergency voluntarily assisted in CPR, administering oxygen and deploying the automated external defibrillator (AED) equipment until medical emergency services arrived and took over the attempted resuscitation of the member. It is with great sadness that all our attempts to do so were unsuccessful. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of 19-year-old Muhammed Ridha Ismail we passed away at the scene.” The club re-opened once they were able to resume normal operations. With such occurrences and an unsuccessful CPR, members of the community and around the country would generally speculate the protocols and procedures of the health club. That is why we interviewed Les Aupiais once more for a further statement with input from their National Head of Health and Safety. They

were able to sufficiently provide us with their emergency drills and procedures so that the community can be rest assured that they are and were fully equipped for this incident however it was just an unfortunate twist of fate where the young man could not respond.

“The protocol at Virgin Active clubs in an emergency, is that staff alerted will press a panic button in the club, with other staff responding immediately. Simultaneously, emergency services are contacted by reception staff. While the external team is on its way, staff use the club’s AED equipment and oxygen and privacy screens are erected. At the same time, if there are medical professionals in the club, they are also called for, and will assist until the external emergency medical services team takes over. If the incident is of a serious nature, the club will be evacuated and only opened once the club can resume normal activities, exactly as the sequence of events on Sunday,” they said. “Virgin Active also phones the member’s nearest relative or contact to alert them of the emergency. If the member is taken to hospital senior staff will often visit them. In the rare and unfortunate event that a member passes away, we also offer counselling for staff as the incident can be extremely traumatic. Virgin Active will keep in close contact with the family and if any members were in the club at the time of the emergency, Virgin Active will offer counselling should they need it.” What about those individuals who were training within the proximity of the young man or those involved? Aupiais said that in such an event these individuals will also be offered counselling as this is a sensitive matter. According to the Head of Health and Safety they outlined the following drills.“Virgin Active staff undergo regular emergency drills as part of their training. Staff members complete a simulated drill at least once a month with some clubs engaging in emergency drills three times a month. Our managers on duty and fitness instructors are certified in First Aid Level 1 training. This certification includes CPR training and the use of automated external defibrillator (AED) equipment. At least two qualified members of staff are on duty at all times. (All clubs are equipped with a comprehensive First Aid kit, oxygen and an AED.). We have no doubt that our staff members and the doctors on duty did everything they possibly could.” In a closing statement Aupiais says, “We strongly advise all our members prior to joining any club that they should have a full medical check-up in order to ensure that they are fit for exercise. Once more, we extend our condolences to the family of this young man.”

The meaning of Diwali Diwali is a festival where people from all age groups participate. They give expression to their happiness by lighting earthen 'diyas' (lamps), decorating the houses, bursting firecrackers and inviting near and dear ones to their households for partaking in a sumptuous feast. The lighting of lamps is a way of paying obeisance to god for attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace, valor and fame.

It is one time in the whole year that children volunteer to leave their beds long before the day begins. In fact, the traditional oil bath at 3 a.m, is the only chore that stands between them and the pre-dawn adventures. They emerge, scrubbed clean to get into their festive attire, and light up little oil lamps, candles and scented sticks(agarbathis), the wherewithal for setting alight crackers and sparklers.

On Diwali night, little clay lamps are lit in Hindus homes, but now a days colored electric lamps are also used. What is the significance of lighting a lamp? There is a logical answer to this question. It is through the light that the beauty of this world is

revealed or experienced. Most civilizations of the world recognize the importance of light as a gift of God. It has always been a symbol of whatever is positive in our world of experience. To Hindus, darkness represents ignorance, and light is a metaphor for knowledge. Therefore, lighting a lamp symbolizes the destruction, through knowledge, of all negative forces- wickedness, violence, lust, anger, envy, greed, bigotry, fear, injustice, oppression and suffering, etc. Competition is stiff, and even the little girl in silk frocks and their finery are watching out for the best sparklers and flowerpots, the rockets and Vishnuchakras, which light-up the night sky like a thousand stars. PMB YOUTH

SMOOTH START CONVERGING FOR FINAL EXAMS The National Senior Certificate matriculation exams commenced on Wednesday, 19 October 2016 with a portion of pupils confident as they wrote their Computer Applied Technology paper. While the majority of learners will sit for the first time to write on October 26, 2016, students are confident and wellprepared for the final lap in their schooling careers. Kwazulu-Natal will accomodate 171 480 full-time candidates over the 6 week examination period. This number increasing from a 2015 learner count of 169 825 full-time learners.

Kwazi Mbanjwa, Department spokesperson said, “building up to the exams the department has intensified its intervention programmes to make sure that results improve this year from the 7.7% drop in 2015.” The government is satisfied with the preparations for the 2016 examinations and stand firmly in equipping both teachers and learners as well as monitoring the functionality of each school ensuring teaching and learning takes place throughout 2016. “Support and guidance was offered to all pupils and the syllabus for 2016 has been completed and revision has been done to ensure all students are ready for their examinations.” Even though the 2016 Matric examinations will be written in the midst of student protests for free education, learners are encouraged not to be discouraged and to work to their full potential. To the class of 2016, we wish you everything of the best and remember - There is no substitute for hard work. Work hard, work smart!

surrounding residents and businesses particularly within the proximity of the PMB campus for any inconvience caused by the protest action however how can the circumstances and actions of both students and the police forces be justified? Can they? There have been a number of appeals to students to hold back and allow space for consultation but students they are tired of waiting. As many may agree, free education is not feasible for the country and its economy but is there any solution to #FeesMustFall, if at least, ever?

Makeup 101: Contouring and Highlighting Contouring: Contouring is a makeup technique that has gained immense popularity over the years purely because (if done correctly) it can make your face appear slimmer. Contouring is likened to a face lift without any surgical procedures. This technique gained popularity when Kim Kardashian posted pictures of herself on social media intriguing people to try it out. So much so that “Kim Kardashian contour” is now a popular searched phrase. Contouring is essentially using products that are two to three shades darker than your skin tone to give shape to your face. Define your cheekbones by applying the dark shade to the hollow of your cheeks. If you have a large forehead, nose or even a double chin, contouring helps to conceal these by creating an illusion of perfect features.

Highlighting:

Contouring goes hand in hand with another technique which is highlighting. Where contouring helps to hide imperfections, highlighting aims at bringing forth features. A highlighter should be two to three shades lighter than your skin tone. These products are applied on the forehead (if you have a large forehead skip this step), the bridge of the nose, on your brow bone, on your cupids bow and your chin. (Refer to images for a clearer depiction).

Products Needed:

First apply a foundation that matches your skin tone, then you contour over that. You can contour using two types of products- Cream based products or powder products.

Cream Contour/Highlight:

Cream based products like concealer or foundation (preferably full coverage) are used to contour and highlight. Powder is used over these areas to set the cream products. Cream products are very heavy and you could end up looking very unnatural if you haven’t mastered the technique. It is also not something that’s advisable on a daily basis as piling on a ton of products on your skin isn’t the best.

Powder Contour/Highlight:

This is when powder based products like matte bronzer, powder foundation and setting powders (in different shades) are used to contour and highlight. If you are a novice and want to attempt the technique start with powder as it is easier to blend and a lot more natural. The most natural way to contour daily is to use a bronzer which also helps to warm up the face. Contouring and highlighting is not only about drawing lines on your face (as it may appear in images). Different face shapes require different techniques. If it is something you would like to learn then book a one on one lesson with a professional makeup artist. It takes a lot of practice and if you can’t afford a personal makeup lesson then turn to YouTube makeup tutorials. These videos are a great way to master the trick and to find out which products and brushes are ideal to use.

Diwali Recipes FOOD Banana Puri Page 5

Ingredients for the pastry: 1 cup of flour ½ a teaspoon of rose essence Oil for deep frying 1 tablespoon of pure butter 1½ teaspoons of baking powder Approximately ½ cup of water Melted butter for basting

Cornflour for sprinkling Ingredients for the syrup 250ml of sugar 500ml water

Method for the Banana Puri Combine sifted flour with baking powder in a bowl.

Add in the butter and mix well. Stir in the water and rose essence. Mix well to form a soft dough. Divide the dough into 5 equal portions. Roll each portion into a 20 centimetre (diameter) circle. Brush the circle with melted butter and a sprinkling of cornflour. Continue layering each circle in this way. The last circle should have an application of butter or corn flour. Roll out the stacked pastry circles into a large circle of approximately 30cm in diameter. Brush the pastry circle with butter and roll into as is done with a swiss roll.

Seal the edges of the pastry. Cut into approximately 2 centimeter thick slices. Roll each slice to lengthen it slightly. Deep fry the pastry slices until it puffs up. Do not fry until brown as the pastry should stay a creamy white colour. Drain the slices on absorbent paper towel. Dredge each slice in the sugar syrup and set aside on a wire rack. Method for syrup Boil together the sugar and water until the sugar completely dissolves. The mixture will begin to thicken. Remove the syrup from the heat and keep warm

Easy Cape Malay Biryani Recipe Biryani has a history as rich as the dish is flavourful, with some culinary historians fixing the aromatic stew’s first appearance in time as far back as 2 A.D., when Tamil cooks would conjure up the rice and meat combo to nourish military warriors before battle. Since then, the traditional recipe’s made its way from the barracks of Persia to the royal palaces of India and all the way down to Cape Town, South Africa, where it’s become the stuff of legend in Cape Malay households. What follows is an easy-to-follow breakdown of the beautifully piquant dish, which is best enjoyed with a group of ravenous friends and family!

FIREWORKS - PLEASURE FOR PEOPLE, PAIN FOR PETS

By Rosemary Antolik AS we enter the last quarter of the year, we also enter the season of celebrations which include the letting off of fireworks. Spectacular as they are, fireworks can also be dangerous if not handled with extreme care and respect. Because of the loud noises some fireworks make, they are a source of fear and trauma for living creatures, both wild and domestic, and many pet owners view Deepavali, Guy Fawkes and New Year festivities with trepidation. However dazzling some fireworks are, the ear-splitting 'big bangs' can have a devastating impact on pets. Local SPCAs and other animal welfare organisations are kept busy at this time of year coping with strays who have fled in

ways pet owners can reduce the trauma is by turning the TV or radio up louder, and closing all windows and curtains - these measures may help to muffle the sounds. Being with them and cuddling them will also help reassure your pets.

midnight. It is also important to note that the general public is limited to letting off fireworks on their own property. If you see someone using fireworks outside of their own property or at a time other than that stipulated, you should contact the SAPS.

Fortunately, certain laws have now been put in place to control the random setting off of Some pets take the noise in their stride, but pet fireworks, and anyone found contravening these laws can be charged by the SAPS under owners of those that are sensitive and likely to the Explosives Act. This Act applies to become stressed, are advised to sedate their businesses selling fireworks only at certain 'fur friends', starting the day before the times of the year and to the general public fireworks are due to be let off. The Pietermaritzburg SPCA has advised Galaxy News that they will be open 24 hours on Deepavali, (Sunday 30th October), Guy Fawkes, (Thursday 5th November), as well as Christmas and New Year. Please note, however, that they will only accept strays that are traumatised...not your own pet. If your pet has managed to escape, please contact the SPCA and, if possible, give them a photo so it will be easier to identify and reunite them with you.

Copesville Revival Centre celebrates 25 years!

Copesville Revival Centre was established by Pastor Steven Anthony and his family, Rogini his wife Bradley and Cohen, his sons, in the year 1991. Copesville Revival Centre is a successful church in the city of Pietermaritzburg, serving the community with all religious denominations, and now celebrating 25 glorious years. God gave Pastor Steven Anthony a vision 25 years ago to build a 1000 seat Community Hall in Copesville, which is now completed by the grace of God. Many thanks and appreciation is extended to the congregation of CRC for their tolerance and support during these many years. Many people came and went from our church during this time, and crucial years of toiling in the ministry when they were most needed. We thank God for His grace that is sufficient, and salute my family, friends and congregation for working alongside and standing with me during these 25 years.

The magic returns: VW’s limited edition GTI Clubsport The Emperor is back; with some new clothes and pumped up on steroids. “Clothes” take the form of a split-level roof wing along with new bumpers, side sills, diffuser and 18-inch Belvedere

This Clubsport not only pointed and squirted, rumbled and snarled, but it felt alive. Under gentle provocation we felt cheeky little pulls and twitches, smothered in previous generations, that reassured us the GTI spirit is back - and Golf-ness rules again.

Clubsport enjoys further individuality in that, unlike plain GTI and Golf R, you cannot buy one with manual transmission; it’s six-speed DSG “Steroids” manifest as an added 33 kilowatts of only. Ground clearance reduces from 133 mm to 106, but that’s partly because of the deeper front spoiler. Its biggest selling point, however, is that the run will be limited, so it’ll become rare and more collectable. There are also some options not available on other GTIs: black mirror caps, darkly tinted side and rear windows, racing bucket seats in leather or sports seats in fabric, 19” Brescia wheels and rear p.d.c. with kerbside view on the left. U.S reclaimed the coveted Ryder Cup and football leagues around the world continued to dish out drama aplenty (even though the Manchester United/Liverpool clash seriously failed to deliver).

On the tennis front, Australian bad boy Nick Kyrgios was up to his old antics yet again in the Shangai Masters in which he all but showed the middle finger to spectators, umpires and the media. His arrogance is somewhat refreshing in this day and age in which all sporting stars and teams are always heaping praise on each other, before and after games. The only code which seems the exception to the rule is boxing where athletes always say it like it is, going back to the days of Muhammad Ali. Kyrgios though, does tend to cross the line (not returning serves and losing points on nation. Springboks an endangered species | Bafana Bafana owe the nation | Proteas Make History THE MONTH OF OCTOBER has been a somewhat mixed bag of sporting results, particularly if one is South African. The big three of soccer, cricket and rugby, once again took centre stage and the one weekend in which the Proteas won, Springboks lost and Bafana Bafana drew, summed up just how mixed it truly has been.

far from grace. A couple of analysts called us the “West Indies of rugby” and “rugby’s dead man”, while another labelled the current bunch “The worst Bok team of all time”. There is sadly no quick fix. We have the best talent in the world but are still heading down the proverbial abyss. A coaching indaba is planned in which the rugby brains of the nation will come together to offer solutions. It is rather startling that former coach Heyneke Meyer wasn’t even invited. I feel that for this to really work, it needs to be no-holds barred, honest and open debate where every single aspect is thawed out. A normal gathering for a quick chat followed by the main event of a buffet lunch is not going to get us anywhere!
