UNFORTUNATE TRAGEDY Family, friends and the local board at the Virgin Active Cascades Club were taken completely off guard by the tragic death of 19 year old, 708255
Muhammed Ridha Ismail.
The first year aspirant lawyer and B. Comm student of the PMB Varsity College had collapsed and died shortly within his morning visit to the Virgin Active Cascades Health club on Sunday, 16 October 2016. The young man intended to regain his strength after a series of heart complications accompanied by a successful cardiac operation earlier this year in April.
Noted to be an ambitious young man, Ismail’s sister Shahista as well as owner of Magnum Engineering & father Raffiek Ismail Khan both said that his death was completely unexpected BMW Approved Used Cars

His funeral was held on Sunday evening with over 2 000 people arriving to pay their last respects to this amazing young man. He will be dearly missed by family and friends and the memories they share with him will never grow old. The community mourns yet another loss of a young, ambitious individual. Varsity College Principal Kevin McShane spoke boldly about Muhammed as being one of the most diligent learners of the 2016 lot. This tragedy was a blow at both the staff and students of the institution. “Muhammed had joined VC at the beginning of this year. He served as a part of the student liaison body and made it his duty to help, server and go the extra mile for the students. He had registered for a higher certificate in business principles and practice and he had been doing fairly well considering he recently had a heart surgery, “said McShane.

and devastated their family with this sudden loss. “He was full of life, very ambitious, family-orientated and liked by all who knew him. He was known by many as “Rider” – a pet name that stuck with him for years. He was in his prime and had a bright future ahead of him. He felt that his quality of life was so much better after the operation and thought he was strong enough to continue training,” said Shahista.

During the course of this medical emergency the Health club was temporarily closed down and all members received a message informing them of the closure. We spoke to Virgin Active’s Head of Strategic Communications Les Aupiais and she stated, “We confirm that staff are fully trained in the club’s health and safety procedures and responded immediately to the emergency. Two doctors in the club at the time of the emergency voluntarily assisted in CPR, administering oxygen and deploying the automated external defibrillator (AED) equipment until medical emergency services arrived and took over the attempted resuscitation of the member. It is with great sadness that all our attempts to do so were unsuccessful. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of 19-year-old Muhammed Ridha Ismail we passed away at the scene.” The club re-opened once they were able to resume normal operations. With such occurrences and an unsuccessful CPR, members of the community and around the country would generally speculate the protocols and procedures of the health club. That is why we interviewed Les Aupiais once more for a further statement with input from their National Head of Health and Safety. They
were able to sufficiently provide us with their emergency drills and procedures so that the community can be rest assured that they are and were fully equipped for this incident however it was just an unfortunate twist of fate where the young man could not respond.
“The protocol at Virgin Active clubs in an emergency, is that staff alerted will press a panic button in the club, with other staff responding immediately. Simultaneously, emergency services are contacted by reception staff. While the external team is on its way, staff use the club’s AED equipment and oxygen and privacy screens are erected. At the same time, if there are medical professionals in the club, they are also called for, and will assist until the external emergency medical services team takes over. If the incident is of a serious nature, the club will be evacuated and only opened once the club can resume normal activities, exactly as the sequence of events on Sunday,” they said. “Virgin Active also phones the member’s nearest relative or contact to alert them of the emergency. If the member is taken to hospital senior staff will often visit them. In the rare and unfortunate event that a member passes away, we also offer counselling for staff as the incident can be extremely traumatic. Virgin Active will keep in close contact with the family and if any members were in the club at the time of the emergency, Virgin Active will offer counselling should they need it.” What about those individuals who were training within the proximity of the young man or those involved? Aupiais said that in such an event these individuals will also be offered counselling as this is a sensitive matter. According to the Head of Health and Safety they outlined the following drills.“Virgin Active staff undergo regular emergency drills as part of their training. Staff members complete a simulated drill at least once a month with some clubs engaging in emergency drills three times a month. Our managers on duty and fitness instructors are certified in First Aid Level 1 training. This certification includes CPR training and the use of automated external defibrillator (AED) equipment. At least two qualified members of staff are on duty at all times. (All clubs are equipped with a comprehensive First Aid kit, oxygen and an AED.). We have no doubt that our staff members and the doctors on duty did everything they possibly could.” In a closing statement Aupiais says, “We strongly advise all our members prior to joining any club that they should have a full medical check-up in order to ensure that they are fit for exercise. Once more, we extend our condolences to the family of this young man.”
