FREE EDUCATION? A peaceful protest was led from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, 20 September 2016 based on the outcome of the recent fee increment by Higher Education and Training Minister Blade Nzimande. Hundreds of students gathered around mid-day at the KZN Legislature to detest the possible fee increment for the 2017 academic year, announced by Nzimande on Monday. Students and parents question the Deja Vu’ that comes with the 8% fee increment for the 2017 academic year. Last year, between the months August and October 2015, students set out to protest the 6% fee increase for the 2016 academic year. Now, a year later students were bombarded with a possible 8% fee increase. “There will be no university fee increase for National Student Financial Aid Schemes (NSFAS) beneficiaries. Fee increases for other students should not exceed 8%. This will apply to both universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges.” said Nzimande on Monday in Pretoria. Students were not elated by the decision and have been protesting since the latter weeks of August 2016. The increase projected by the government affects all students drastically. The struggle and escalated protests by students over the 6% fee increment as well as a proper allocation to the budget of NSFAS was in the same position this time last year.

Last year, President Jacob Zuma declared a zero-fee increase for 2016 after students around the country protested under the hashtag, “#FeesMustFall.” Nzimande says, “While he understands the students call for a zero-percent fee increase, the government can no longer afford it. Students from the upper class and well-off families as well as students with company bursaries, who can afford the fees, are expected to pay. The Government is committing to find the resources to support all poor, working and middle class families with this subsidy funding.

South Africa also engaged in these protests over the past month and have not yet settled down.

The question now is, is free tertiary education feasible to the economy and future of South Africa?

Questions were raised and statements made after the arsenic acts over the two UKZN premises but mainly it was who will be paying for all the damages incurred? As well as how will all the timeless law literature be replaced or recovered?

We asked students from UKZN PMB to tell us what they think of the current academic schedule disruption, fee increment and what they presume the outcome of Tuesdays protest may bring. (See page 2)

Student Talk

Estrada Naidoo

“The current state of affairs across all campuses are stressful in terms of safety and education. Many graduates including myself are worried and doubtful about whether or not grievances are going to be settled in time for the beginning of final exams. Those of us at the end of our race are frustrated, but at the same time cannot agree that the protests are unfounded. The protest action for the 0% increase is a must as we are charged for even lecture slides an 8% increase is uncalled for. However the call for free education is not feasible in our developing nation and those in power should suggest this as a

Moosa

“I would like to finish my degree but these people are making it hard for students like me. They disrupt lectures and cause so much of havoc. I don’t even understand why they are striking. I do not feel like there will be any profit from the strike but as an individual, I just want to learn.”

Justice Albert

‘Knowledge is power. We, as students, need to learn. How is tht possibly when we don’t even feel safe coming to campus? I personally do not believe that education should be free. If it is free, people will abuse their ‘right’. When you pay for something, you tend to appreciate it more and try to get your “money’s worth”. I do not think that violence is the answer, we can come to a peaceful solution that can make everyone happy. At the end of the day, this is our country. If we keep on burning down libraries and defacing OUR buildings, what are OUR children going to look forward to?”

alicia@blackincmedia.co.za

“I personally believe that free education is a utopic demand in a developing country like ours. Basic education is a right. Financial Aid must be provided based on a student's merit. It is not wise to destroy our institutions especially since we will inevitably be paying for the damage later on. An 8 percent increase however is also unaffordable. Peaceful protesting for realistic goals should occur.”

Celebrating International

Older Person’s International Day of Older Persons is a special day for older persons or senior citizens all over the world that takes place on October 1 every year. For older people, ageism is an everyday, yet heart-breaking, challenge. Ageism is everywhere, yet is the most socially normalised of any prejudice but people fail to comprehend that growing old is not a disease. The media portrays old people as “senile” and “doddering” on television. It occurs when the doctor applies a more “relaxed” attitude towards screening an older person for preventable illness, or uses care guidelines meant for younger people. In conjunction with International Day of Older Persons the Galaxy News interviewed Mr Oliver and Mrs Dorothy Assy. The couple has resided in Woodlands all their lives and as they say, “living and loving our lives!” Aged 96 and 89 respectively have been married for 70 years. The couples main motivation is putting God first - “Good communication and respect for each other is the key to a long and successful marriage.”

SENSES SALON AND SPA Day PLACES IN SA TOP 2!

“We are very independent and self sufficient. We attend senior citizen clubs, of which we thoroughly enjoy,” the couple says. The Assy’s are blessed with 7 children, 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. They are active members of the St Martins De Paris church for more than 70 years. They received a papal blessing from Pope John Paul 2nd and Pope Francis. The Assy’s say the only issues that they are currently facing is the noise from taxis, especially the loud music as well as learners at the end of the school day. “However we are very happy in our neighbourhood and the lives we lead. The people are respectful and helpful. Always lending a helping hand. We are respected by young and old and are appreciated by the community.” The Assy’s hope that all older persons are treated with the same love and respect as they are. Celebrate International Older Persons Day this year by sharing love and appreciation to those senior citizens in your life.

PMB YOUTH

CONVERGING Converge was birthed in 2014 with a vision of a city-wide youth gathering attempting to unite youth groups from across the city of Pietermaritzburg. With a team off youth leaders from across the city, this vision happened. The aim is to: r

Inspire the youth to grow spiritually

r

r

Assist churches with launching and developing youth ministry.

r

Youth Leaders who were determine to make a difference, got together and formed the initial Converge team. The vision was to have periodic combined youth events around the city, to reach the youth of Pietermaritzburg, and to build relationships amongst existing youth ministries. This year we are delighted to have Pastor William Johnson from the Oxygen Church in Dallas Texas ,USA. All youth and youth leaders are invited to this free event from across the city from every denomination. FRIDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2016 06:30PM Breakthru Church 43 Boom Street

The sun is out and the flowers are blooming, time to put those thermals away. Each season comes with new trends and must-have items. So what’s hot (except the weather of course) this Spring? Slip Dresses: These strappy dresses (some resembling lingerie) are all the rage this season although this trend was founded in the nineties. This item works for both daytime and night-time looks. Layer with a t-shirt under during the day with flats, and wear with strappy heels and a neck piece at night. T-shirt’s under Camisoles: This is another trend revival from the nineties and if you are not brave enough to wear a slip dress this is the more conservative option. The most popular way to wear it is with a white t-shirt under a black camisole.

the perfect cover-up for those sometimes chilly evenings. Accessories and Footwear: -The must have accessories this season are chokers and anything with tassels (the most popular being earrings). Purchase chokers in fabrics like suede and velvet. - When it comes to footwear sandals are at the top of the list. The flat-form sandal with white soles (3) is the trendiest shoe this season. Look for metallic finishes. The gladiator strappy sandal (2) is definitely a classic and you probably already own a pair. Lastly espadrilles (1) are the perfect accompaniment to your spring wardrobe. They are stylish, give you some height (if you need it) but are very comfortable.

‘Being green’ is so much more than we realise. We tend to focus on nature in the form of planting trees, Arbor Day, conservation of animal and plant species. But, have you considered agriculture in this big picture? Keeping our environment healthy means providing our farmers with better soils and water resources to provide for our agricultural needs. The anguish of our agricultural economy extends from the suffering of nature, to the farmer who grows our food down to you, the consumer who buys the fresh produce to feed your family. An unhealthy environment affects each part of the agricultural cycle in one way or another bringing with it significant issues of food insecurity. With the increase of carbon dioxide, global temperatures and extreme weather events we are bound to experience a ‘knock-down’ of our agricultural economy. But what does our behaviour have to do with the environment and our agricultural economy? Isn’t this the Farmers’ problem and not ours to resolve? Well, as our global population increases our demand for energy, water, food, living space increases. As a result we as a global population continue to emit GHG which in turn affects our environment in various ways, as we have discussed previously.

Create your own seedbank. Every plant produces some type of seed at some point – keep a lookout for these. Use your old toolboxes and create your very own seedbank. Collect seeds of your choice and store them in their separate cubicles in the toolbox. Label each cubicle so that you know which seeds are being stored in each cubicle. Having trouble getting water into your plants? Reuse old fizzy drink buddy and 2 litre bottles to water your plants. Puncture a few fine holes into the cap of the bottle, fill the bottle with water put the cap back on. Carefully dig a deep enough hole in the middle of your veggie garden/ plants. Turn the bottle upside down and bury it in the hole, securing it so it will not fall. Your plants will have a supply of water for a while. Always water your garden at night/ early evening. Evapotranspiration rates are lower when the sun goes down and the air is cooler. Reuse your old shoe holder and create a herb garden. Suspend/ hang your old shoe holder on a door/ wall outside your house under a sheltered space, puncture tiny holes at the bottom of each shoe pocket. Fill soil into each shoe pocket, sow herb seeds of your choice and water very lightly every week as needed, let the water cascade down into other pockets. Before you know it, you have your own cooking herbs.

Reduce the pests. Do some research on the best pest repelling herbs like bay leaves, fennel, chives etc. and plant them in-between your more sensitive vegetables and fruit. This way you will naturally reduce the various little veggie-eating bugs.

Where does this leave us? We have to face the cold hard truth, we can no longer ignore what the planet is telling us. In order to change our situation and circumstance, we need to ‘step-up’ and actively contribute to living greener lives. We cannot complain about our daily circumstances nor can we put the blame on our neighbour’s shoulders or the farmers for that matter. Explore planting in crowds as opposed to rows. The traditional way of planting is usually in rows. Try something different and plant veggies and plants in tiny little pockets next to one another and see what happens. It is likely that the plants that grow taller will provide shade to the plants below it. And remember that plants are living organisms fighting for survival. They will therefore also push each other to grow faster as they will be fighting for sunlight.

In our last article we discussed renewal, regrowth and rebirth of nature itself. In this article we would like to share a few ideas on how to make greener life choices, the consequences can be devastating if we do nothing. For generations our forefathers have grown the odd vegetable or two in their own back yards, feeding their families and enjoying the miracles of nature. Why has this trend not been taken up the current generations? Why is it ‘uncool’ to have the beauty and magic of nature at your doorstep? Do you know of another planet where your delicious food can be grown? I certainly don’t and I am a big fan of cultivating your own ‘veggie gardens’.

Winning ways: 2016 Volvo XC 90 T5 AWD R-Design Geartonic By Gordon Hall

Some cars just feel right. After that first trip to the local Spar and back, I knew why Volvo’s XC 90 has won so many trophies, awards and medals these past few years. It even wrestled SA Car of the Year away from Porsche’s three-year stranglegrip. It’s hard to explain; it’s a contented sort of feeling you get in your bones, rather than the “fizz” James May mentions occasionally.

First, although it’s trendy, the touch-and-swipe control pad makes simple operations complicated. I do not want to ask permission from a menu in order to turn on the aircon, change temperature or reroute the air stream. I don’t want to do likewise when adjusting the music system either. Give me buttons and knobs, thank you.

The next point is about the rearmost pair of seats. They’re spacious enough for most adults as far as head- and knee space goes, That’s because this particular mid-range but passengers’ feet can’t fit under the chairs model, with its sporty engine and luxurious trim, is a truly desirable piece of machinery. If it in the next row forward. One might live with that if anyone over the age of about twelve, had more extreme off-road capability and and indecently skinny, could get into and out Volvo overcame a couple of fixable flaws, it of them. While most second-row seats fold might unseat my favourite SUV. That one and tumble forward, making access easy, happens to be a Land-Rover product, but I’m those on the XC 90 just tilt their backrests and not prepared to side with The Jezza just yet. slide forward a bit. The resulting gap is about

half of what real people need. But moving on from that, its features and capabilities include a full suite of braking and traction aids, seven airbags rather than six, Volvo’s City Safety that sees moving obstacles before you do and brakes autonomously at intersections or when you get too close to the car ahead. It picks up road signs and speed limits you may have missed and is luxuriously equipped inside and out. It’s also a competent soft-road vehicle that fulfils the needs of most weekend adventurers. Standard items include LED bending headlights with active high beam and LED running lights, automatically dimming side- and interior mirrors, air suspension, powered tailgate (both ways), sporty Nappa leather upholstery with powered adjustments (including lumbar

support and under-thigh extenders) and memory settings for both those in front. There’s a 12.3” virtual instrument cluster, a 9-inch Sensus Connect touch-screen infotainment system, Park Assist Pilot plus front and rear sensors, four-way drive mode selector (Eco, Comfort, Rough Road and Dynamic), four-zone filtered air conditioning and navigation. Most of those items would cost an arm and a leg to add on to your usual luxury car. And it seats seven. As I said, it simply feels right; spacious, comfortable, quiet and safe. The interior is beautifully fitted and finished, it steers and handles well and you have a clear view of what’s happening all around. It charges like a rampaging boatload of Viking warriors too, with almost endless and always-on power delivery.

The UEFA Champions League as well as its ugly step sister the Europa League have also begun in earnest with the likes of English champions Leicester City getting their first taste of European football. In the long run, these two competitions seem far easier to predict and one can look no further than Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid doing well in the Champions League and the likes of a currently troubled Manchester United going far in the Europa (however, don’t rule out Sevilla from snatching a fourth consecutive title here).

THE 2016 PARALYMPIC GAMES took place in Rio this month

Springbok legacy in trouble | A feast of football awaits | Well done Paralympians

The way the team was dismantled by world champions and world number one New Zealand was painful to watch. But then again, rugby’s most famous quote goes something like this: “Rugby is a simple game played among thirty men and in the end . . . the All Blacks win” (their total dominance is bad for the world game though).

FOOTBALL fans around the world are
