PIRATES Two riders who can really boast of being “local heroes” also don the Pirates race suit in 2015. Last year’s Rider of the Year will line up again at Wimborne Road as a British fast track reserve, having held down the slot in 2014 with a truly sparkling, headline-grabbing, performance. And Davey Watt, so often a talisman for success, will wear the Skull and crossbones as he comes back to his parent club after a spell with the Lakeside Hammers. Australian born Watt, a former captain like Holder and Janowski, has adopted Poole as his home town and will relish being back with the Pirates, the team for whom he rode his first UK races, he explained. With the familiar faces duly installed by Matt Ford it only remains for the three latest bearers of the famous skull and crossbones to step forward and carve their names into the Pirates’ record books. Rising Polish star Kacper Gomolski, at 22, is the youngest member of the team and is hotly tipped to make a big impression. He arrives on a match average of just 3.94 points but his form back home suggests that he will very quickly add points to the figure established in 2013, since when he took the silver medal in the World Under 21 Championship.
PIRATES ON PARADE FOR NEW SEASON OF SPEED
The POOLE READYPOWER PIRATES stated their intentions to take a third consecutive Elite League title at a season opening press event at Poole Stadium this month. peaking ahead of the first meeting on track, there was a quiet confidence in the air as the familiar roar of those 500cc machines echoed around the town as they warmed up in the pits. Promoter Matt Ford and each of the riders, along with Team manager Neil Middleditch, spoke about their aim to reward the thousands of loyal Pirates’ fans with yet another trophy when the season climaxes in October. Middleditch explained, “It never ceases to amaze me that Matt (Ford) always assembles a highly competitive team each season, and this year is no different. If you look down through the team all you can see are riders who are capable of riding above their average and that is so often a key ingredient of a successful season. I have said on the last two occasions that we can go and win the title, and we delivered both times, and I see no reason why we shouldn’t do something that has not been done since the 70’s and win three in a row.”
04
the situation Matt was in. I am a good friend of Darcy and he has had a lot to deal with these last few months and I didn’t want to add to Darcy’s problems, but now I am really happy to be back at Poole.” However he was quick to add praise to his fellow team mates, “The team doesn’t really need a captain; we are all captains, we all know what we need to do and we can all be good enough to go out there and do it,” he added. Pirates will also be welcoming back 2012 World Champion, Chris Holder, who returns on a full season contract, having stepped in for the injured Ward at the beginning of last year after deciding to stand down from UK racing in 2014. Holder described how he was hoping for an injury free year after suffering a couple of terms where track crashes robbed him of the chance to complete a full season.
Another young debutant likely to set a quick pace around Poole Stadium is Australian, Dakota North, arriving from a spell with the Swindon Robins and having impressed with some guest appearances in Poole colours last year. To complete the septet, British fast track reserve Paul Starke joins the Pirates with a reputation built on success with the Somerset Rebels in the Premier league. It all adds up to another year of adrenaline filled action in the heart of Poole. The optimism is shared by the riders, management and fans and they will be out in force once again with bundles of #PIRATEPRIDE! RUGBY
A TALE OF TWO HALVES
With the season not yet finished, Bournemouth’s future in National 3 could already be secure. The final game in March is set to be a milestone in Bournemouth’s return to form and by the time you’re reading this article, they will hopefully have already secured a mid table position. This is a stark contrast to the start of the season when after losing their first three games Bournemouth were looking at the prospect of a difficult long season, with a relegation battle at the end. After the team had been weakened from losing a few key players, the new squad found it difficult to adapt to a change in playing styles. But the season has been a tale of two halves, with the second half demonstrating some of the real potential Bournemouth can offer. A change in coaching staff has enabled the team to return to form through forward dominance unleashing the free flowing rugby supporters have enjoyed watching. This combined with the nurturing of future talent has seen some future stars make a big impact on the change at Bournemouth Rugby Club. These have included: Sam Knott, an imposing second row. At 18 Sam already dwarfs a barn door and has a promising career ahead. Joe Gwyther, an intelligent 10, currently studying at Bournemouth University. Joe is a skilful fly-half with dazzling feet and an intelligent rugby brain that can unlock the smallest of opportunities in the opposition’s defence. 06
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Hamish Renwick, a flanker with the highest work rate. Hamish is another 18 year old that imposes his presence on the pitch through his tackle rate and his ability to make things very difficult for the opposition This has enthused senior players like Grant Hancox and Joe Rees giving them a renewed enthusiasm. This combination is creating a dangerous melting pot, mixing experience with youthful desire that’s set to create a winning formula not just for next season but for a sustained future. Bournemouth are also pleased to announce that Craig White and Dan Connolly have accepted the offer to run the senior coaching program next season. This creates great stability in the club with the new ethos of sustained development at the heart of the clubs continued development. BY DAN CONNOLLY

WHERE NO ONE HAS ROWED BEFORE… ON 2ND MAY 2015, A TEAM OF ADVENTUROUS ROWERS FROM DORSET WILL DEPART FROM BOSCOMBE PIER, DORSET, IN AN ATTEMPT TO SET A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR THE OLDEST AUSTRALIAN SURF BOAT TO BE ROWED AROUND BRITAIN. Donning their speedos as standard equipment on board their boat, the team, who are all members of Bournemouth Surf Boat Club, will undertake the three and a half month circumnavigation of our island joined by three auxiliary rowers, assisted on land by several volunteer minibus drivers. Rowing approximately 25-30 miles a day, the guys will camp on land overnight, or take up offers of accommodation from coastal communities. The expedition aim is to raise £100,000, to be split equally between two charities: The Royal Marines Charitable Trust and Wessex Cancer Trust. We caught up with expedition leader, Ellis Hagger and Steen Stones who make up part of the crew to find out how the challenge came about and how they are getting on with their preparations. Hi guys, thanks for speaking to us. Can you tell us about the challenge and your boat? Hi, the challenge is to row our Australian Surf Rowing boat approx. 2,500 miles around the coastline of the UK. Our aim is to row her 30 miles a day for around 90 days! That’s the equivalent of a full marathon and more every day! Do you know roughly how long it is likely to take? Well, the sea state and weather conditions will dictate our progress. We will face tidal surges, headlands fog and heavy winds at times and this is where we have to be flexible on our timings. 90 - 100 days is around the mark on when we hope to finish. How is training going and what is the team spirit like with a month to go (at time of print)? The training is going well. Good ergo work (rowing machines), running and healthy food are all helping as well as not having too many nights in the bar talking about the challenge! 08
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Team spirits are high and we are all looking out for each other as the pressures (logistics, gaining funds and sourcing kit) rise. It’s fair to say that we are all a little nervous of what lies ahead... but teamwork will get us through it! Tell us about the team and who is involved… We’ve got a real mixed bag of crew mates! All of us are Surf Boat Rowers - The high adrenaline sport of surf rowing (www.uksrl.co.uk). Mark Green is an electrician turned full-time writer (The Travel Auction / The Curse of the Lonesome Mariner) and he is heading up the boat modification and safety on the water. As Mark sails he is best positioned for boat safety and has a calming manner when things get a little tricky. Sean Leddy is a Special Needs Teacher. Sean is sorting the important task of setting the sea route and maintaining the Sea Charts as we progress around the coastline. Sean always sees the funny side of things and will
“OUR AIM IS TO ROW HER 30 MILES A DAY FOR AROUND 90 DAYS! THAT’S THE EQUIVALENT OF A FULL MARATHON AND MORE EVERY DAY!”
be helping morale as the challenge becomes more difficult. Ellis Hagger is an English Teacher and longtime rower. One of his tasks is to beg / borrow / steal sponsorship and kit for the epic challenge. Interestingly, Ellis had the honour (with 8 other surfboats) of representing Australia in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant in 2012 in our surf boat! Steen Stones - I am an ex-marine and currently a Beach Front Manager on Bournemouth Beach. My main focus has been spreading the word regarding our Challenge and raising funds for it to happen. I have really been helped by my girlfriend Emily and together we have found so many positive attitudes from people regarding our adventure! We have two support rowers Gary Cure and Mark Vidler who are rowing with us for two weeks and four weeks respectively.
How did you think up this challenge? We all compete in Surf Rowing and (after a few beers) got chatting about a different challenge. We had all, at different times, thought about rowing the Atlantic. The costs involved,in todays financial climate, make it very difficult to raise the cash for such an endeavour. One of us said ‘... what about rowing around the UK?’ and then the acorn of an idea was formed! Little did we know how dangerous our coastal waters can be! Tell us about the causes you are supporting… Well both causes are close to the crew. Unfortunately most of us have experienced family and / or friends who have suffered from Cancer. The Wessex Cancer Trust supports not only those who are suffering from Cancer but also those who (importantly) are caring for their loved ones. The Royal Marines Charitable Trust is close to my (Steen Stone’s) heart as I served in Afghanistan and saw friends suffer (physically and mentally) from the effects
of warfare. The Trust enables marines with catastrophic injuries to overcome their physical and psychological problems and helps them in civilian life after their military service. This will be incredibly demanding physically and mentally, how do you prepare for something like this? As this is an unknown we feel we have trained physically as much as we can. Only in the boat can we get ‘boat fit’ and get stronger with each day’s gruelling 30 mile row. There will be days where we are helped slightly by the tide and days where we will be rowing into a head-wind. Mentally we have the advantage of being good friends who have experienced the fear of being in ‘big water’ whilst surf rowing in Cornwall, Devon and Wales. That being said we realise that there will be days when one or two of us will be having a ‘bad day’ and it is here that we will support each other by giving them enough space (difficult in a small boat) to get over it. We have agreed that after each day of rowing that if there is a problem, however small, it be aired that night - thus stopping any build up of tension within the crew! There will be massive lows but there will also be massive highs on our voyage! How can people find out more or support your fundraising? People can log on to our website and donate directly on: www.ukcharityrow2015.com or do a ‘Like’ on our Facebook page ‘Around the UK Charity Row 2015’. Watch out for four guys rowing past your coastline wearing the dreaded Speedos! We wish the team lots of luck and look forward to following their progress over the next few months, good luck!

THE JUNIORS The Club has always had a great emphasis on encouraging new riders, particularly in the younger age groups. Some of these have several years experience and can gain national recognition. Examples include Nathan Goulden and Macie Schmidt who both won British titles in 2014. Nathan took the Under-10 Boys title at Manchester, whilst Macie is the current national Under-13 Girls champion following her success at Edinburgh. As well as the weekly club night sessions, young riders are able to compete in regional junior events on weekends during the summer racing season. These are all age related and start at the under-8 level. MEMBERSHIP The Club has a strong emphasis on encouraging new membership numbers and this has proved so successful that Poole CSC recently won a regional award from British Cycling for the high level of racing members. The Club has Clubmark status which is a recognition of maintaining high standards of coaching, welfare and general operations. During the winter, club members have been hard at work upgrading the clubroom facilities at Harbourside Park in readiness for a busy year ahead. For 2015, the Club is looking to continue its growth of racing members, with extra training sessions planned specifically for the growing numbers of girls taking to the sport.
NEWS This season sees Poole Cycle Speedway hosting one of the sport’s principal events - the World Team Cup, a hugely prestigious competition where teams from the Home Nations alongside Australia and Poland will be taking part to battle for the magnificent trophy and coveted title of World Team Champions. This will certainly be a spectacle not to be missed so put Sunday August 2nd in your diary. As always, junior riders are well catered for with 20-30 of the Club’s younger riders regularly in action in the British Youth & Junior League competition which runs throughout the season. There will also be the regular league, cup and individuals events on the racing calendar. The upsurge in recent numbers has led to Poole entering two teams in the regional league. All in all, another great racing season to look forward to. FOR ALL OUR LATEST NEWS AND UPDATES ALONGSIDE ALL OUR FIXTURES VISIT WWW.POOLECSC.COM OR FIND US ON TWITTER @POOLECSC OR FACEBOOK.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
SPORT NEWS MOUNTAIN BIKER BEN MOORE SCALES POOLE’S DOLPHIN SHOPPING CENTRE AT MIDNIGHT rofessional mountain-biker in training, Ben Moore made it his mission to complete the impossible; riding the challenging urban landscapes of Poole’s Dolphin Shopping Centre after dark. Ben navigated his way through darkened hallways, down corridors and over flights of stairs, as part of his training ahead of a race in Mexico for the Urban Downhill World Championship Final. Ben commented: “The floor surface of the centre presented the biggest issue as it was brand new to me and something I had never ridden on before. The best way of describing it was like riding on ice. Once I found the grip point, it made for a great shoot as I could literally ‘drift’ every corner!” The aspiring rider, who has broken over 14 bones during the course of his training and currently works at the Dolphin Centre’s dedicated bike shop, Cycle Paths, added: “It was a very unique experience that was made possible by the management team of the shopping centre. I am thankful to them for helping me train for such an important event.” To watch the video of Ben’s ride search ‘Dolphin Shopping Centre’ on YouTube.

THE JOBS COACH
With The Game’s resident jobs coach, Julie Cook-Hughes
APPRENTICESHIPS : HOT NEWS THINKING OF CHANGING CAREER? HAVE YOU CONSIDERED RETRAINING? BROADEN YOUR CAREER OPTIONS – FOLLOW THE ‘PATH OF SUCCESS’ WITH SOS RECRUITMENT’S SOUND ADVICE
Julie Cook-Hughes, Founder and Managing Director of SOS Recruitment is constantly updating and ensuring her business model is working with current job market trends and demands. She has outlined below some market research which, I am sure, will make many of us ‘think outside the box’ – whether you are a company recruiting or an individual who is seeking to develop into another field of work. Perhaps you are someone just commencing your ‘career journey’…how exciting – 2015 should be the year you make those all important changes! LET’S START FROM THE BEGINNING… Mapping a ‘career path’ begins right from school when we choose ‘subject options’ for GCSE and A levels. It is our responsibility says Julie Cook-Hughes that we, as employers, take responsibility and guide our future generations to make the right career choices encouraging the younger generation to choose options which will aid them when making career choices in the future. Knowing your strengths will also help identify: • What your options are • What kind of roles will suit you • Which job opportunities are a good match to your skills • Where you may need further development MAKING A CAREER CHANGE – WHAT TO CONSIDER When considering your options and before making decisions consider what your ‘work values’ are, ask yourself a few questions… • The elements that helped you to enjoy a role or made you feel particularly good? • The types of organisations you have or you may want to work for? • The types of people you would or have enjoyed working with? • The ‘values’ that really matter to you – things like variety, challenge, security and friendship? By making and evaluating your ‘work values’ this will enable you to take a much broader view of any role and look beyond a job content to judge if it will fulfil you. NOW LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR SKILLS... • Are they transferable? • Think about your career to date – is there a skill you are particularly proud of? • Was there a task you particularly enjoyed and excelled in? • Was there a time where you were particularly proud of an achievement? • What do others think you are good at?
16
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
• What feedback/comments were you given in performance reviews or appraisals? • What activities and hobbies do you enjoy? • What skills do they require? • What are you good at – what skills do you enjoy using? • Have any of these skills assisted you in a work environment? Considering all of the above you can then focus on organisations or an industry that most suits you and fits in their culture, your lifestyle and way of working. CONSIDER YOUR JOB CHOICES • Do I stay or move into a new industry sector? • Do I stay in a similar role but different industry? • Perhaps make a radical change perhaps becoming self-employed? Always review your skills regularly, your values and work style – this will change throughout your career. Ensure you do your research, ask yourself which industry sectors interest you and what skills do they require? CONSIDER RE-TRAINING – APPRENTICESHIPS OFFER AMAZING OPPORTUNITIES! Both the British and European economy is dependent upon businesses of all sizes and industries taking a ‘leap of faith’ and researching into apprenticeship opportunities. We must take responsibility as employers to remove ‘our blinkers’ with lesser skilled staff and encourage and welcome these apprenticeship individuals into our workforce. Julie Cook-Hughes, Founder and Managing Director of SOS Recruitment is extremely passionate about ensuring our future ‘generations’ are given more opportunities to take up employer-hosted programmes to grow and develop talent within their businesses. We owe it to ourselves as thriving south-west business sector to be more creative and flexible when recruiting. Nurturing your workforce from within your business nucleus can only be a positive move, whether these individuals are school/ college leavers or more experienced candidates seeking a new opportunity/change of industry sector. Julie Cook-Hughes and her dedicated teams are at the forefront of ‘apprenticeship’ vision moving forward with contact being made with various businesses to promote and encourage their loyal clients to consider such options as ‘apprenticeships’.
Apprenticeships can help re-build/enhance a business’s profile. A recent survey suggested that more than 80% of customers are more likely to use a business if it hires apprentices. The Financial Services sector has been working closely with the Financial Services Partnership (FSP) to promote apprenticeships in this sector. The south-west of England employs tens of thousands of people along in the financial services sector, with companies such as the Nationwide Building Society, Barclays, J P Morgan and Bank of New York to name just a few! Engineering companies are actively seeking to employ ‘apprentices’ and teach them skills which will be with them for life and enhance their career opportunities. Supporting both apprenticeship schemes and work experience programs not only aid the younger generation starting out on their ‘career path’ but assists those individuals who may be seeking a new challenge whatever the stage of their career.
Julie Cook-Hughes, Managing Director & Founder of SOS recruitment
Julie Cook-Hughes has over 20 years experience in recruitment, she is a spirited, energetic and forward thinking Managing Director who is hugely appreciative of her dedicated Management Team and their team members. Her extremely successful business has been built over 14 years and she has every right to feel extremely proud of the successful business she has created. Julie recognises the efforts of her staff and continually shows her appreciation on a daily basis – no mean feat in itself for such a busy person. Julie is an approachable person, who will always listen to new ideas and initiatives and drive her business forward to ultimately make the business even more successful. As far as SOS Recruitment are concerned we truly know there is ‘no better Recruitment Agency’ – do not take our word for it, contact us NOW!
Stronger Growth of Employment – What’s been happening so far in 2015? Research has shown strong growth of staff placements year to date, across both the permanent and temporary job market and with this still being on the rise! Falling candidate numbers of experienced staff drives up starting salaries and permanent opportunities alone have risen at the fastest pace in the last 3 months. Temporary requirements by clients has increased this year at a phenomenal rate also – temping whilst seeking a permanent role is strongly encouraged by SOS recruitment to retain continuity in your CV and experience other opportunities whilst seeking your dream job! Something that does need to change across the south-west in some industry sectors is salary levels, salary levels remain static in some industries. However on a positive note steps are being made to improve remuneration packages to both retain staff and entice new workers into businesses. The key challenge to both SOS recruitment and employers overall is to ensure they continue to attract the very best candidates available in the marketplace – month on month since the start of 2015 candidates have become in even more short supply and this is a worrying trend. Engineering staff are extremely sought after and rated the sector which would most benefit from undertaking ‘apprencticeship schemes’, closely followed by the financial services sector and care sector. CROSSFIT
AT THE WEST HANTS CLUB
By Adrian Woodall, Westover CrossFit and West Hants Strength and Conditioning Coach

So in their own words, here are a few real life experiences of Westover CrossFit at the West Hants club. Classes run Monday-Saturday at a variety of convenient times. Included in the timetable are sessions that are suitable for newcomers or people wanting to try a session for free. I look forward to guiding you through your journey towards total fitness. Ever heard of CrossFit? Not sure what it is? In my last few articles I’ve talked about some of the benefits that can be experienced following a ‘cross-training’ approach. I realise that you may still have some unanswered questions such as ‘What is it?’, and ‘Is it for me?’
I have been a member of the West Hants Club for five years, I didn’t know a soul when I started but found it very welcoming and have made lots of friends there since. I have enjoyed a great range of classes including Zumba, Body Pump, Hi-30, Spinning & Body Combat and have also had personal training with Cleo which I’ve benefitted greatly from. CrossFit, the latest addition to the club, intrigued me, the way anyone who does it just raves about it got my interest. So, I watched a few Youtube videos & immediately thought “no way can I do that!” It looked like everyone was a body perfect athlete lifting massive weights - not something a 40 something mother of two could do! But, after
I am so pleased to have found CrossFit. Having come from a background of endurance sport, I started CrossFit at West Hants in August and my overall fitness has never been better. I realise there has been bad press in the past about injuries in CrossFit but as a Physio myself at the West Hants Club, I really do commend Adrian on his teaching. Technique is his absolute priority and this allows us to get stronger, fitter and more flexible in a safe manner.
I am really enjoying Crossfit and can see the benefits; I am getting fitter, stronger and losing weight! I play lots of racket ball at West Hants and want to win, I am very competitive by nature so I needed a way to get quicker around court, increase my stamina and lose weight. My failure is that I am not good at self motivation (and I like cake!) so Crossfit is proving ideal due to attending regular sessions, the encouragement of others in the groups and the emphasis on working to your maximum whatever level you
speaking to Westover CrossFit coach Adrian, I realised everything is scaled. Literally anyone can start (after a fundamental session covering safety). After one session I was hooked! Westover CrossFit classes are small so not intimidating for new members and full of motivating, positive people, it is like a community. Adrian is a great coach, explains everything carefully and makes sure everyone is working safely whilst gently encouraging - it is not like a bootcamp! Every class is different, you never know what you are going to get. They are made up of people of all ages & abilities, men & women. Only one thing is guaranteed - and that is you will get an awesome workout!!
are at. The groups are small so there is lots of individual attention to make sure your techniques are effective and safe. While there is often a wide range of ability in a group I never feel bad about completing the lowest level as I am still working as hard as I can, I can appreciate what others are able to do and it gives me something to aim for. I may not be able to do unassisted chin ups but I am so impressed that now I can at least hang! Seeing your own improvement is wonderful motivation.

MEET THE PRO
MACIEJ JANOWSKI
WE WELCOME BACK THE 2015 POOLE PIRATES CAPTAIN, MACIEJ JANOWSKI AND CHAT TO HIM ABOUT THE SPEEDWAY SEASON AHEAD, THE NEW LOOK PIRATES LINE UP, THEIR CHANCE OF AN ELITE LEAGUE TREBLE AND A BIT ABOUT THE MAGIC MAN HIMSELF. Welcome back to The Game, Maciej, and congratulations again on winning the title last year! The big question on everyone’s lips, can we make it 3 in a row?! I think we have a pretty good chance because we have a really good team this year. Chris has come back and we have Davey, Dakota, Kacper, Paul and Kyle. We are very strong and hopefully if no-one gets any injuries, we can finish the season how we started with the full team. You had an incredible season last year and as the captain, you led from the front! How much of a difference to your performances does it make when you are captain? I think it isn’t that much different because even though I am captain on paper, every race I just to my job and try to win. For every start, I am focused and I prepare very hard. Every time I go to the tape, I try to win and I never think about the different positions like coming second or third. I focus on the win every time. This year’s team is again full of experience and talent. How does the 2015 team compare to last year’s team? I think it’s pretty similar. Last year, we also had a great team and two years ago, we had a good team too! When I started racing in England, the hardest race was against Poole. Poole will always have a good team with very good riders. Lots of riders want to race here because it’s a very good club. Some of the other teams in the league have some strong line-ups too, who do think will be the biggest threats? We can’t think about anyone in particular and need to focus on our team and to keep our position. You can look too much at different teams but we must work for every point we can and try hard in every heat. It doesn’t matter who we are racing, home or away, we have to go out there, have fun and it will all be good! You are now getting back into the routine after having a break from racing, how hard is it to adjust and get back into the racing mind-set and what did you do in your break? To be honest, I had only one month off. I was training almost every day. I did a lot of CrossFit and kick boxing with my coach and we had three winter camps. There was a lot to do. This winter went very quickly for me! I did some snowboarding with my friends and had some good times but I was also working hard and training a lot.

You’ve been racing at the top level for a few years now, but what got you into speedway in the first place? I always liked racing on bicycles and my father bought a small bike but I never thought I would race on a speedway bike because I was playing a lot of football and doing lots of different sports. One day, my father took me and my brothers to a small track near to Wroclaw and that is how everything started.

THE SPRING SESSION
PHOTO: WWW.JAKEMOORE PHOTOGRAPHY
With the Spring well on it’s way, there’s an exciting buzz at the beach as water sports lovers are dusting off their gear and chomping at the bit to get back out in the ocean. Whilst it was possibly the best Winter for surf in years, only a hardened few made the most of it whilst a lucky handful made the migration south to warmer climates. So, with the days growing longer and the strength in the sun building, it’s time to embrace the British Spring time and start a new season on the water here in the UK. At Poseidon, the UK’s premiere Kitesurf school, the doors have opened up for another season. Having returned from Egypt and planning an exciting year ahead, they’re kicking things off with a season starter event to welcome everyone back to the sport they know and love.
The Spring Session event, now in its second year, will be a weekend full of all things kite. With an open equipment demo for those in the know and a free taster schedule for those less experienced, this year there’s also a party to end the day and give everyone a chance to get to know each other a little more off the water before enjoying more great times on the water. With food, free arrival drinks and music, everyone is welcome with a limited number of tickets available. So if you’re feeling spritely and excited to see the sun once again, contact or visit Poseidon on Sandbanks for more information and tickets. NUTRITION Q & A
Essential Mineral: Potassium The average Western diet is lacking in essential nutrients such as Potassium that can easily be provided by eating more healthy whole foods. Unrefined foods—fruits, veggies, grains, and other natural products that go through little to no processing — provide high levels of antioxidants and other nutrients (since they arrive to you in the form nature intended). They’re also nutrient-dense - they pack in beneficial nutrients and minerals and contain no added sugars, fats, starches, or sodium.
Potassium Why do we need to include foods containing potassium in our diet? 1. It keeps your heart beating! 2. Increasing potassium consumption has been linked to lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of osteoporosis, as well as decreasing the risk of diabetes and heart disease. 3. Improves digestion 4. Helps regulate water balance and 5. Keeps the nervous system and our muscles functioning properly. 6. Helps your body recover from exercise better
What happens if I don’t consume enough? Muscle cramps, constipation and fatigue
How to Get It: • Baked potato with skin • Bananas • Spinach • Cooked or raw beetroot • Apricots • Broccoli • Almonds • Carrots
Why not try this easy potassiumrich smoothie recipe? ½ cup carrot juice (344mg) ½ cup orange juice (248mg) 1 medium banana (422mg) ½ cup ice BLITZ! Contains 1,014 mg of potassium and a healthy dose of vitamin C!

Testimonial 30-day challenge you say?!?… Me? … Um, no way! I can’t do that! I’m too weak… one of the few excuses I could easily come up with. That was until now. So on a visit to our local Bikram studio, the lovely Suzy urged us to sign up and do the 30 day challenge starting March 1st. I was doubtful at first I have to admit…will it be too much for me... will it cause me more pain doing it consecutively like that? And surely with that much exercise, I am bound to lose more weight? I suffer with fibromyalgia, an array of many symptoms stretching from pain to extreme tiredness which has affected certain areas of my life in ways that are extremely frustrating, including an issue with gaining weight (lucky, I hear some say but it is really not the case). Karl suffers with
FACT OF THE MONTH: Why is our circulation so important? The circulatory system is an organ driven by the heart, to provide a constant supply of blood to the body through the blood vessels.
POSTURE OF THE MONTH Standing Separate Leg Stretching Pose Benefits: Increases circulation to the brain and adrenal glands, Centres the nervous system, May be good for depression, Good for constipation, Helps reduce abdominal obesity, Helps with diabetes and hyperacidity, Releases lower back Exercises muscular, adrenal and reproductive systems, Good for sciatica, stretches and strengthens the crushed and shrivelled sciatic nerves, Increases flexibility in the pelvis, ankles, hip joints.
extreme back pain due to his line of work as a tattooist, a hernia in his spine (sports injury) and an issue with losing weight in which he has been struggling with for a while. So we are 19 days in, I can honestly say that my life is dramatically changing! My pain has 80% gone! Pain in which I have suffered with for over 10 years has lifted, my need for pain relief has literally reduced to nothing, my sleep pattern is better, and I have so much more energy! My focus outside the room is fantastic and I have gained 4lbs! I discovered that Bikram brings your weight back into line so if you are like me and a little underweight then it helps you add the pounds. Then there is Karl…his sleep is so much better, his core is so much stronger which is having a great advantage in his
golf games, he is much more energized, focused and has lost nearly a STONE! I cannot shout loud enough the positive effects that Bikram yoga has had on us both in such a short space of time. It is truly amazing and we recommend it to anyone. A massive ‘thank you’ to all of those involved with Bikram Bournemouth, who welcome anyone with open arms into their Bikram family. An amazing place, a positive space, the teachers are brilliant, giving fabulous classes and fill us all with drive and determination that we can truly achieve whatever we put our minds too. Namaste, Christy & Karl x
Your circulation of blood plays a very important role in your health as it transports adult stem cells, red & white blood cells, hormones and plasma. At the capillary/venule bed, there is the movement of nutrients transporting to the cells of the body i.e. vitamins, minerals, amino acids, carbohydrates like glucose and fats. There is also the release of oxygen to the cells; removal of carbon dioxide from the cell and removal of metabolic acids. These are extremely important functions to have working efficiently in your body. It is important to know how small your blood vessels are at this microcirculation level. Often these blood vessels are only one red blood cell wide. So it is essential for health that the micro blood vessels are open and free flowing. Otherwise at this cellular level all the transportation is decreased! Remember this is cellular, it is happening at the micro level of your whole body, that’s inside your brain and every other organ and gland! Regular exercise will help improve the circulatory system creating blood flow to your extremities and helping reduce the risk of diabetic health complications. Having increased blood circulation throughout your body will help you look and feel healthy. Your skin will have a healthy colour and you will feel warm to the touch. Good blood circulation helps improve brain function and helps keep your mind sharp and focused. You will also be more equipped to handle stressful situations.

WESSEX SURF CLUB
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF WESSEX SURF CLUB
HISTORY One of the first people to surf Boscombe Pier was a policeman named Jack Monk. Two other early surfers were Tony Beale and his wife, both members of the family firm that owned Beales of Bournemouth and they brought back Malibu boards from the U.S. to use at Boscombe. Jack Monk made his own boards in his garage from wood and waterproof marine ply. He was also a water polo player for the Bournemouth Wessex Surf Club recently celebrated Swimming Club and the Police team. One Tuesday evening, the team an impressive five decades since the met to play a league match but the opposition had to cancel at the last club launched back in 1964. MATCH 4 MACMILLAN - FORDINGBRIDGE SPORTS CLUB SATURDAY 4TH APRIL Fordingbridge Sports club presents the Match 4 Macmillan Charity Rugby Football Match. 30 minutes of ‘Touch’ Rugby and 30 minutes of Football...All in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
The Bar will be open, the sun shining (we hope) and a BBQ to keep you all going throughout the day. All players must “pay to play” and any support is welcome.
Every day 27 people in Hampshire hear the news that they have cancer. This will see Hampshire’s population of people living with cancer more than double between 2010 and 2030. This increase will mean more local people feeling isolated and alone, every day, even after treatment ends. Macmillan and its supporters must take action now to make sure we’re there to solve these issues.
Bring your friends/family...the more the merrier. Football vs. Rugby, a whole community involved in raising money for a great cause, close to the clubs heart.
Match 4 Macmillan is a great way to get local community groups fundraising for people affected by cancer, by doing something they love. Thanks to supporters like Fordingbridge Sports Club who are hosting a Match for Macmillan, we are able to fund some fantastic services in this area. Services such as the Macmillan Information and Support Centre at the Southampton General Hospital which provides practical, emotional and financial support to people going through cancer, their friends, families and loved ones. We also fund over 100 Macmillan professionals which include our GP advisers, physiotherapists, financial advisers, dieticians, and of course our Macmillan nurses.
Macmillan send a huge thank you to everyone at Fordingbridge Sports Club for joining Team Macmillan, and ensuring that no one will face cancer alone. Questions about cancer or need someone to talk to? Call our Support Line free of charge on 0808 808 00 00. To find out more about the event: search ‘Match 4 Macmillan’ on Facebook

UP THE
CHERRIES THE FINAL WORD WITH RYAN ALLSOP
I have been back since mid-January and have really enjoyed training with the rest of the lads again. I joined Coventry City on loan in pre-season, hoping for games and experience, which is what I got. I was involved straight away when I was included for the squad to travel to Leeds United the day after my loan expired. It came as a shock but you have to be prepared and ready for any challenge that comes your way. That’s the life of a goalkeeper and a similar thing happened to me last season. Stephen Henderson arrived on loan and unfortunately went off injured in the first few minutes of his second game. It just goes to show that anything could happen and that you have to have expect anything to come your way in the next few months. I feel match sharp, I feel ready. Although it would be a step up compared to the matches I have played so far this season, I made 27 appearances for Coventry while I was there. I’m more ready than I have ever been and I feel like I’m a better goalkeeper than I was last summer. I think I’m more mature after a new challenge with Coventry. Technically, I think I have improved as well. Any young goalkeeper needs games and I believe the loan spell has helped me progress. There are no doubts about my mental strength. I have always had that, right from when I was released by Wolves as a teenager. I have had setbacks, I have had people doubt me ever since I was young and I like proving people wrong. At the same time, I think I’m physically stronger and improving on the areas of my game that needed a bit of work.

There were some useful experiences at Coventry – we had a decent start to the season and the club moved back to the Ricoh Arena after playing in Northampton. There were 27,000 fans in the stadium for the return and it was a great atmosphere, only for results to fall away a little after that. The manager then chose to give the other goalkeeper a go for a few games, but I came back in and played even better than I had done before.
Coventry. I know, with Artur Boruc here, there is a chance I might not get an opportunity but I want to be part of what is going on here. This is where I want my long-term future to be.
Towards the end of last year, I got a call from my agent and he told me that Coventry wanted to keep me and extend my loan. I had already made my mind up to come back here by that stage, which I explained to the goalkeeping coach Steve Ogrizovic and then the manager Steven Pressley.
Neil Moss watched all of my games, was always in touch and I came back here a couple of times to review some of my performances. He was pleased with how I was progressing and it was positive for me to know that Mossy had been monitoring the situation while I was away.
This is where I see my future and I wanted to come back to earn a new contract. It was by no means an easy decision though because I want to play games and part of me wanted to see the season out at
Now, it’s just about keeping my attitude right, showing I have improved and ultimately earning a new deal.
