Now wearing the Captain’s armband Maciej Janowski had even more reason to celebrate the big 56-35 win over the Eagles as he topped the scorechart with paid 14 from five rides. Only former Pirate skipper Bjarne Pedersen headed him this night.
The Grand Final 1st leg at Coventry and again Pirates edged in front to bring a lead back to Dorset. Danny King gained a crucial heat win in heat 4 with Kyle Newman although at that stage the scores were level at 12-12.
A sensational semi-final victory at King’s Lynn by a single point paved the way for Pirates to hold their own in the second leg at home. Here Maciej Janowski and Vaclav Milik get the better of Scott Nicholls in heat 3.

CHANGES AT THE TOP here have been some changes in the senior coaching team at Bournemouth Rugby Club this month and both Crispin Cormack and Paul Dunn have been released with effect from the 20th January. The decision was not made lightly and the Executive Committee would like to thank Crispin and Paul for their hard work and dedication during their time with us, we wish them all the best for the future.
Alan Manning, Captain, is feeling very positive about the rest of the season and gave the following comment, “The season is building slowly. We always knew it would be a season to rebuild and I think we are just finding our feet as a squad. We have had a lot of young talent making their debuts for us this season and they have all made a great impact, this is particularly good for us and the future of the team. In an up and down season there have been some good victories and the players are working hard on the training pitch to make sure we pick up a few more.
The Executive Committee felt that the club was not moving in the right direction and needed to look to the future, more particularly the next 3 to 4 years For the remainder of this season the senior coaching will be undertaken by Tim Collier and Craig White (Forwards) and Dan Connelly (Backs) Both Tim and Daniel are current First XV players and Craig has played for Bournemouth in the last 10 years. The Executive Committee will not be rushing to appoint other coaches or a Director of Rugby/Coaching but will look carefully at our current structure before making any decisions, The wish of the Executive is to appoint coaches from within the Club and Bournemouth’s Coaching Co-ordinator, Mark Mulcahy, is actively working to bring on suitably qualified coaches. Bournemouth Rugby currently has a number of very good coaches within our Academy and Mini section who are progressing well. Bournemouth Rugby’s aim is to move forward within its financial means with support from its many Supporters and Sponsors We are living in challenging financial times but the Executive Committee is confident that it can guide the Club to success whilst at the same time balancing the books.
With 5 home games from now until the end of the season we are confident to climb a few places up the table. We will be working hard on the basics to make sure we cut out the small errors that have been costing us points. We have struggled on the road so far this season so a real target is to win at least two of our last 4 away games.” The annual Youth and Mini tournament will be held on the weekend of the 28th and 29th March and we are currently looking for local businesses who may be interested in placing an advert in our programme, sponsoring balls, providing gazebo’s or sponsoring the medals and trophies that are given to attendees. A full page black and white advert will cost just £100 with a half page costing £50, the programme will be seen by over 5000 people over the weekend and teams are attending from all across the South of England. Readers Digest. My name is Ryan Potter. I have been in the health and fitness industry for over 20 years. During this time I have I have represented Team GB in Rugby 7s and Squash, I have been a national personal trainer for many years and trained hundreds of people from the general public, athletes and celebrities all with different aims from losing weight, sports specific, rehabilitation, strength and conditioning and generally changing themselves to be a new person. The lives we all lead in this day and age are full TOXINS. These are not good; in fact, in a big enough dose, toxins can kill you. In food, we have additives and preservatives. Both of these toxins are full of harmful chemicals that we flood our bodies with daily and this stops our human metabolic system working (It doesn’t matter how far you run, how many classes you go to or how many weights you lift, if you don’t function correctly from the inside you’re wasting your time.) In the air we breathe, we have over 188 known chemicals including arsenic, lead and asbestos, again this is not good for our bodies. In water, we have chlorine and fluoride, chlorine is a bacteria and living organism destroyer (what are we?). Fluoride is dangerous when ingested and is also found in toothpaste. It says on the back of the tube ‘do not swallow’ however, both these chemicals are put in our water supply to keep it clean. Before we go any further, I’m not saying do not breathe, eat or drink and go and live in a cave, I’m saying you need to be aware of what you are doing to your body. 100 years ago, ‘nutrition’ and ‘detox’ meant nothing due to natural foods around, but now due to the lives we lead, we all have to understand it all a lot more as everywhere we go and in everything we do, we fill our body with toxins. Last month, I said I would talk about food combining and how this can be a problem and a common mistake. This is where food groups are combined here are some examples: • Oatmeal with raisins • Apple and banana • Pasta with salad • Vegetables and bread The list goes on! The problem here is mixing bad carbohydrates and good carbohydrates.
• Fish and chips • Chicken sandwich • Spaghetti bolognaise • Shepherd’s pie • Chicken/tuna pasta The problem here is mixing protein with bad carbohydrates. The reason why we can’t combine these foods is that when we eat, our body releases digestive enzymes as we chew. The food goes down into the stomach where the body’s hydrochloride acid breaks the food down into small particles, from here the food is taken down the small intestine where digestive enzymes are realised to break it down further so it can be absorbed through the lining of the intestinal wall. When we eat an acidic food, our body releases alkaline. When we eat alkaline food, our body releases acid. Now think back to school in a chemistry class - what happens when you put acid and alkaline together? Correct, they neutralise therefore nothing can get absorbed and all this food goes direct to your stomach this causes pressure build up, known as bloating. When food travels through your intestines, it will eventually reach your colon and due to food being not digested correctly, it begins to clog up your intestine and stick to your follicles around the vilae. You will feel this almost immediately because of the pressure build up plus your body will react with water to flush it out. This creates bloating. Next time you feel bloated, think of what you have eaten? Proper digestion of the body should mean than you should eliminate waste within 24 hours (everything you eat should be eliminated within 24 hours).

The conclusion refers back to last month’s editorial and putting the correct nutrients together, good protein, good carbohydrates and good fats combined means that the nutrients will be accepted by the vilae and will go straight to the liver which will help your metabolic system function correctly. Therefore, your food will be digested properly and not cause any internal problems and will give you the results you want.

I do feel that the London Olympics inspired me as the level of competition was incredibly high and there were so many role models to look up to it made me think how far I really want to go with my throwing career.

Hammer, discus and shot requires a lot of strength and explosive power and we also do a lot of conditioning weight work which helps me stay in my weight category and keep to my best possible fitness.
HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCING YOUR SCHOOL WORK WITH YOUR TRAINING? I find balancing my school work with my training quite easy because, all of my teachers at Avonbourne understand that I train a lot so they give me a bit of a longer deadline to hand in and to complete my homework.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR TRAINING AND DO YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW ANY SPECIFIC DIET? I train 5 days a week where 2/3 times a week I weight and powerlift and 3 days a week I focus on throwing and technique work. Training this much I think helps me stay focused with my sport and helps me get to the best that I can. There is no specific diet that I follow but I do try and eat healthily most of the time.
WHAT ARE YOU TRAINING FOR NEXT AND WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? I am now training for the English schools athletics where I will be able to gain my England vest and the Sainsbury’s school games later this year where I will be able to compete against the best in the country.
WHAT COMPETITIONS HAVE YOU TAKEN PART IN? I have taken part in many different competitions which have allowed me to compete against the best in the country. I have competed at schools level, regional level and national level where I represented Dorset. When I represented Dorset at English schools in Birmingham for discus I came away as junior girls discus champion. DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER SPORTS? I take part in power and weightlifting where I have broken all 5 south west records. I do weight and power lifting to help with me with my conditioning with my throwing.

FINALLY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE WANTING TO GET INTO THIS SPORT? I would say get stuck straight into it and train to your full potential. The best things to do when you are young are to try everything that you want and to try and find what suits you best. The best thing to think is “dream it, believe it, achieve it” and this will get you anywhere. As long as you believe in yourself you will be able to get anywhere. The Game talks to young local windsurfer, Alex Hudson about the thriving windsurfing scene on the south coast.... hanks for talking to us, Alex and Happy New Year! When did you start windsurfing and how did it come about? I started windsurfing when I was about 10 years old. My dad introduced me to it and I’ve been brought up around Poole Harbour. It was a natural progression from messing around in the water, so it made sense to try it. By 11, I had windsurfed around most of the Harbour in the light summer breezes. I haven’t stopped ever since! What is your favourite style of windsurfing? That’s a hard question, windsurfing is so diverse - from freestyle to racing to speed. Personally, I prefer to windsurf in the waves. Sailing in the waves combines jumping off the ramps and surfing waves. For me, the waves make windsurfing much more exhilarating and challenging. Having said that, if there are no waves to be found, I enjoy challenging myself in the flatter water with freestyle tricks. Can you tell us about any comps you’ve been involved with? I’ve done some RYA youth racing through the Team 15 programme representing Poole through the Academy Allstars, but I am now moving into wavesailing. This winter, I have been training with the help of Sam Ross coaching to compete in the British Wavesailing competition in Cornwall later this year. I hope to compete in the youth category alongside some of my friends from around the south coast.

Where is your favourite spot locally? On the south coast, I’ve sailed spots from Weymouth to West Wittering, but my favourite spot to sail for waves has to be Kimmeridge. It often picks up a clean wave when so many other spots aren’t working. It’s also much more isolated than other spots, giving you the real surf-trip buzz. My favourite local spots have to Sandbanks Beach and Branksome Dene Chine. When the wind direction is right, these spots can produce epic conditions on our doorstep. Poole Harbour can be a great place to learn the core skills too. …and around the world? I’ve been lucky enough to windsurf in Lanzarote, Barbados and some of the Greek Islands. Lanzarote and Barbados both have amazing culture, great waves and warm water, meaning the windsurfing is perfect! I would love to visit the Cape Verde Islands in search of bigger, cleaner waves. Whilst sailing in warm water is nice, I’d still like to check out more UK spots in the future, like Tiree in Scotland and Brandon Bay on Ireland’s west coast. With a good wetsuit, there’s no reason these spots can’t be sailed year-round. Do you take part in any other sports? When it’s not windy, I like to wakeboard, wakesurf and paddleboard, especially during the summer months when the water is flat and warm. They also help with the core fitness and have transferable skills needed for windsurfing. Tell us about your kit… For sails, I use Severne SWATs. These particular sails are all round, well built, tough sails that are easy to rig. I’ve tried a lot of sails, and these really stand out for me. The SWATs are incredibly light but powerful at the

same time. I’ve sailed in some big storms, and they really give me the confidence to get out there when the conditions get tough. I’d recommend Severne for any budding wave sailor looking for high performance kit. For boards, I use the Starboard Kode 82. It’s a great all round wave board with loads of fin options, making it really versatile for all types of windsurfing. In the waves, the twin fins make it really loose and fast. In the flatter water, the single fin option is great for freestyle and carving moves. What surf report to you use to check out conditions locally? I like to use ‘BigSalty’ weather to check the conditions before I head out. ‘BigSalty’ has a great beach guide which tells you which directions are best for each spot, and it also combines swell and wind forecasts. Poole has a good live weather buoy and webcams too. ‘Windguru’ is another useful tool. Where is a good place for people to start out and give it a go and what age can you start? There are loads of centres in
Poole Harbour which can help you get on the board for the first time. I recommend Poole Harbour Watersports. Learning to windsurf in Poole Harbour is safe and fun, since it rarely gets deeper than waist high water. During the summer months, the water really warms up too, meaning you can focus on the windsurfing! You can start from as early as 6-7 years old; you just need to be enthusiastic and willing to learn. I see a lot of people buy old cheap kit from eBay and try and teach themselves. Most of this kit is totally unsuitable for beginners and it makes the learning curve a lot harder. I would recommend visiting your local shop to get some advice before buying your own kit. Finally, sum up what windsurfing means to you in three words… Exhilarating, challenging and exciting. Glenmoor and Winton Academies Physical Education Department he Physical Education Department at Glenmoor and Winton Academies prides itself on its high standards of teaching and the aspirations of its pupils. With success across the board at local, regional and national level, the department has expanded its expertise with sporting academies at the forefront of its development. The forward-thinking department believe that their sports programme will rival that of any public school. It has utilised its variety of students and its links with other United Learning Independent Schools for mutual benefits. Furthermore, students at Glenmoor and Winton Academies have the opportunity to go on international sports tours; this year there is a Netball Tour to Barbados and next year a Football and Rugby Tour to Boston and New York, USA. Each tour requires the players to do a number of fundraisers to ensure the trips are affordable for all. If a student is selected as gifted or talented by the department, these students now have access to the departments own Elite Athlete Programme. During their physical education lessons, these students now follow a more bespoke pathway, specific to their sport development. This includes sessions on fitness testing, sports psychology, goal setting and nutrition. These sessions are run in partnership with Bournemouth University.
Glenmoor and Winton Academies have developed a football club that now competes in the Junior Premier League every Saturday. Players from Bournemouth Collegiate School and Glenmoor and Winton Academies compete for a place in this prestigious team which is linked directly with Southampton FC. Scouts from Premiership youth teams come to watch the squads and there have been some declarations of interest in a number of players in their first season.
Handball Academy – Phoenix Handball GB Handballer John Pearce is now employed by Glenmoor and Winton Academies and coaches all of the Handball Squads for the boys and girls age groups. Handball is a relatively new sport in the UK that is growing at an unprecendented rate. It is a fast and exciting sport with many transferable skills. The Handball Squads at Glenmoor and Winton have already had success at county and regional levels.
Tennis Academy – West Hants Tennis Club
The tennis academy utilises the expertise of local tennis coaches. Primarily, students who show potential to become accomplished tennis players are selected to attend tennis sessions at West Hants Tennis Club during the school day. At the other end of the spectrum, students go on to represent Glenmoor and Winton in county, regional and national competitions.

Netball Academy Glenmoor Blades Glenmoor and Winton Academies now employ Katherine Hayes as a full time Director of Netball. Kat currently plays professionally for Netball Super League Team Surrey Storm. Kat has taken on the Netball Tutor Group and oversees all of the Netball Squads at Glenmoor and Winton. Outside of school, Kat leads on coaching at Weston Park Blades which act as a feeder club to Surrey Storm and play in the National Premier League at senior level. This February, Glenmoor and Winton will be starting its own Netball Academy for any interested girls, from any school in years 4 to year 8. Rugby Academy - London Irish RFC The United Learning Rugby Academy was the first academy and is the flagship of the sporting academies. Players from Glenmoor and Winton and Bournemouth Collegiate School attended trials in the hope of being selected for the Rugby Academy Squad. Each player who was selected was invited to a presentation evening led by London Irish RFC coaching staff and first team players. There they received their London Irish Club tie to wear in place of their school tie, player pack and
their age group squad specific training programme. The Aviva Premiership London Irish RFC also lead all the coaching sessions. Each age group attends strength and conditioning training before school and skill specific training in the afternoon at least twice a week. Three players from the senior squad (U16) have now been selected to attend trials for the London Irish U18 Academy, have been selected for South West England trials and one player has now been offered a place at the Bath RFC U18 Academy and their ASSE programme.

The Game talks exclusively to recent winner of the BDO World Champion 2015 to ask firsthand how it feels to be the best in the world, the support from the fans and what the future holds. Firstly, congratulations on becoming the 2015 World Champion! How does it feel?! It’s really not sunk in totally if I am honest. I am sure it will when things return to a bit more like normality. How has the last month been since winning the title? Very busy with TV, Radio and interviews for good people like you for the first week or 10 days. All a little out of my comfort zone at times but fun for my family and myself all the same. You have always had some great support but it seems to have quadrupled since the start of the competition, how much of a difference does that make? It really does seem to have. When at Lakeside, you are there for 9 days, you feel cut off from the outside world. Your only contact with it is social media messages and texts really. The people of Dorset sending me their best wishes and good luck messages kept my spirits and confidence high. I can’t thank them enough for that.

Your form in the championships was incredible, with some big check outs and averages which really got the crowds going, what is it like playing in front of big crowds and live TV? When you take out a big check out or a 180, it gets the crowd bouncing to the ceiling. You think about how fantastic it felt after, but not during the game. It is difficult keep concentration while trying to compose yourself, when fans around you are losing it so much with enjoyment. We are nothing without the fans watching us; it’s great when they get so into the games. After a 6-0 win in the semi-finals, the final against Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams was up there with one of the best matches we’ve seen and it looked like it could’ve gone either way, how do you keep focus in such a close match like that? It was a great final with many squeaky bum moments to keep everyone on the edge of their seat. In the last set, I thought it was getting away with Wolfie sat on double top. I somehow came up with a massive 158 finish with a double 19 last dart. I felt I’d finally broken him. My wife Sharon always tries to stay calm. So in big moments, I look for her to get my focus back. She was there ready with a calm smile and clapped gently while everyone around us had lost it. My focus regained and plenty still left to do, I managed to finish the game off. You also play in the local Wimborne Minster League for your local pub team, have you managed to play since becoming the World Champion?! I missed the first match after the Christmas break because of being at Lakeside, so I knew I was dropped from team the following week. I was crowned World Champion on the Sunday and dropped from my West Moors team on the Monday. I still went to the match to take the trophy to the club. The members stood and clapped me in. They presented me with a framed picture from Lakeside, with ‘World Champion 2015’ engraved on it to go on the club wall, to commemorate my achievement.
You were famously quoted saying how you were going to buy a new tractor with your winnings, managed to get one yet?! Before I left for Lakeside, I had said to dad “If I win it, I will buy you a new tractor”. Well that will teach me! He has said he doesn’t want a new one so I’ve had a small reprieve. No, I haven’t got one yet but I am currently looking! …and also, your wife Sharon is after a long overdue honeymoon, anything booked yet?! That’s a no too. She has waited 23 years, so I’d say another few months won’t hurt her! We all know you’re a huge Poole Pirates fan and you can regularly be seen in the crowd at Wimborne Road and you even had the famous Pirates crest on your shirt sleeve, how do you think they’ll get on this coming season? This year, we seem to have the world against us before a wheel has turned. The Darcy Ward hearing being put back twice and now work visa issues for some non-European riders like Chris Holder. Us fans are not sure who we are going to have in the line up come the start of the season. Having Davy Watt and my buddy, Kyle Newman back has been a lift for fans. We do know whatever happens, Matt Ford will put the best team possible in the pits and Middlo will work his magic to get the very best out of them so what more can we ask for? Finally, is there anything you would like to say to your fans? Huge heartfelt thanks to friends and fans for messages of support and congratulations my family and I have received. I’m proud to have brought the trophy home to Dorset. I really apologise for what I put you all through during the Lakeside week, but I hope you can keep following and supporting as I’m hoping I am going to need your support a little longer yet. Do you think about yourself before others or are you a ‘people pleaser’? Do not waste precious energy on pleasing others if it’s not necessary. If you think you are due a pay rise, propose it and ask for it – do not justify it and waffle. Behaviour breeds behaviour in any workplace, finding the right balance of being a well-liked member of staff or trying to be the ‘office joker’ is a fine line to achieve sometimes. One of the best achievements at work is to be one of those individuals someone would like to aspire to they notice attributes such as work ethic, honesty, creativity and passion and talent which delivers the ultimate results.
quite simple, firstly ‘stall’- say you will come back to them, that you need to check your diary – this will give you the opportunity to take time to think whether you can say ‘YES’. Believe it or not sometimes saying ‘NO’ will be a test on you and you will be respected for not giving in! Saying ‘NO’ is different to wanting to take on extra responsibility sometimes, you need to differentiate this. Be diplomatic and communicate, i.e. if you literally are short of time but would like the opportunity to undertake such an extra task at another time ensure you let the person know – at least they are aware. 6. GIVE YOURSELF WEEKEND TIME – ME TIME… Enjoying time away from work is vitally important for our wellbeing, whether this is going to the gym or spending time with friends, but ensure you do not overcommit every weekend. Alternate your weekend, a busy one, quieter one – just relaxing is good for the soul! Try not to look at work emails if you have access from your phone or computer, they can wait if not urgent. If you have work worries, put a time limit on talking about them, going over an issue in your mind will not be healthy or resolve it, therefore condition your mind to ‘switch off’. During the week set aside one evening that you leave work come what may ‘on time’ arrange something that you have to be at for a certain time, even a play date with your child! 7. BEING A PERFECTIONIST CAN BE HARD WORK… We all like to produce work which we are proud of but sometimes time just does not allow us to always be ‘perfect’. Ask yourself, is this a task that needs completing absolutely 100% perfectly, or is there some leeway and does it mean that not such a ‘perfect’ outcome will result in leaving the office on time and making time for yourself or someone or something you have committed to? Taking pride in what you do is important but being perfect EVERY TIME is just not viable!

3. BE ORGANISED! Whether you are just beginning your career or you have worked for the past 20 years, never underestimate how being organised can assist you with achieving a work/life balance. Just a few things that will help you feel organised are writing a ‘to do’ list, keeping up with your emails, remembering the rule read and action/file or delete. If you need to ask colleagues to not disturb you, send an email requesting no interruptions. If you manage teams utilise them and delegate! Feeling organised is extremely powerful to the mind, it will ensure you feel less stressed and in control. 4. MANAGING PEOPLE’S EXPECTATIONS… Utilise your ‘out of office’. Utilise colleagues as buffers to manage tasks in your absence, often the most successful Managers are extremely poor delegators. By communicating with colleagues they will be aware that you are not necessarily in a position to give them an answer straight away. Other people, as you do, need to manage expectations of both you and themselves, the old age saying ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ comes to mind! 5. LEARNING TO SAY NO… We have all experienced this in our working lives, our colleague or boss asks us to do something that we really should be saying ‘NO’ to. Some techniques to accept are

Hi Harry, thanks for talking to us. What a season so far! Is this what you planned or is this better than expected? As a team, we knew we could stake a claim for winning the league and getting ourselves to the top. From the outside, I imagine some people might think that we’re over achieving a bit and perhaps some probably didn’t expect us to be doing as well are we are. But, we have a belief in one another and to us, it’s no surprise that our hard work is paying off and we are where we are. You have been at AFC Bournemouth for nearly 5 years now, is this season the best you’ve had? Definitely. To be where we are, it’s the best position this club has been in for a long while. I look back a couple of years ago when we got promoted and up until now, that was probably the best season. For this current one to finish as the best ever, it would ultimately have to be promotion otherwise it would be seen as a disappointment. As long as we continue as we’re doing, I’m sure it will go down as the best one. You are playing in a team that is one of the top goal scoring teams in the whole of Europe, where are all the goals coming from?! We’ve got a good spread amongst the team. Callum has obviously had the majority of the goals but it’s nice to know that we don’t have to put all the pressure on him to score. I’m chipping in, Matt Ritchie, Marc Pugh… goals are coming from everywhere in the team and it’s good to see everyone getting on the score sheet. As you just mentioned, you’ve come up with a few goals yourself this season, is this something you’ve been working on? Previous to scoring, I knew I had to try and get on the score sheet a little bit more. The manager is always picking up on weaknesses that you can

improve on and getting on the score sheet was one of mine. I would say consciously, I’ve been working on it and it was nice to see the hard work I put in pay off. It’s fair to say that December was a good month for you; you scored in every one of the five games AFC Bournemouth played and you were then voted the PFA fans player of the month! How did that feel? It was nice to get a reward for the hard work. Ultimately, the best reward is that we’re sitting at the top of the league and I would trade any individual awards in to stay at the top but in reality, it was nice to get noticed. …and you have recently signed a new 3 ½ year contract with the club, I take it that was an easy decision to make?! It was pretty straight forward looking at the way the club is going and the squad we’ve got here. It’s a really great place to come into every day. I’ve been here for 4 ½ years now and without a doubt, this is the most I’ve enjoyed it and it would be silly to want to go elsewhere so it was a pretty easy decision for me and the club. I think the question on every AFC Bournemouth fans lips is – promotion? I’d like to think we can sustain what we’re doing. It would be a disappointment to not achieve that of course, but we need to know what has got us in this position and carry on working on those elements of our game. We’ve got a good work ethic in this squad and as a club. If we don’t manage promotion this year, it won’t be down to a lack of hard work or people not trying as hard as they can. That is the most we can do and hopefully we’ll get the ultimate reward.
How much of an influence does the manager, Eddie Howe, have on the team? The manager is the reason why we are at the top of the league. If we didn’t have someone who gives us the philosophy he’s given us and the belief that he has in all the players, it would be very different. We’ve got quite a lot of players that played in League 1 and we had hard times last season with some heavy defeats. It would have been easy for him to ring the changes but he stuck by everyone and so everyone has been loyal to him and it’s a good working relationship. Our previous front cover stars include Tommy Elphick, Callum Wilson and Steve Cook. We asked all of them who the biggest jokers in the team were. Your name was first on every one of the lists… why was that?! I try and have a laugh and I’m close friends with the lads especially the three that you’ve covered: Cooky, Tommy and Cal. I’m really good friends with those three boys. We have got a good changing room where everyone has a joke with one another but maybe I push the boundaries a bit more than others and it sticks in their heads! What is the banter like within the squad? Like I said, it’s a really good changing room and we’ve got some great characters. There’s no-one who is trying to be individual or who gets above themselves. We’re a real team that is united and wants to achieve the same goal. Off the pitch, we have a really good relationship and as I said earlier, it’s a really nice place to come into everyday. There are not many clubs that you have that feeling at long may it continue. Who have been the best teams that you’ve come up against so far this season? Other than Liverpool, in the League, I would say Derby. They’re a really good team and they try and play football the right way. It’s no surprise that they’re doing really well in the League and if you interviewed one of their players, they would probably say that we are one of their toughest opponents. Finally, is there anything you would like to say personally to the fans that follow you every week? I would say a huge thanks to the fans for paying the money each week to come and watch us. It’s no surprise how much they’ve got behind us this year to see where we’ve are in the League. It’s a privilege to play in front of our fans and all the players feel the same. I think the fans appreciate what we’re doing this year. They’ve stuck with the team through some hard times so it’s nice they’re being rewarded and hopefully we can achieve everything for them. 3 CUES FOR A POSITIVE MINDSET Stay focused, ease tension and solidify your performance.
1. VISUALISE How you visualise yourself performing can ease your mind and up your confidence. Before a game, think about your best game. Use all five of your senses to replay the best parts of the game. Then think about your worst game. Use your five senses to replay the game with a more positive outcome.
2. PERFORM THE GRATITUDE RITUAL Thinking about the things you’re thankful for can help you put things in perspective. Before a big game, think about three things that you’re most grateful for. It can be sports related or personal.
3. CONTROL YOUR BREATH As the excitement of the game approaches, your breathing and nerves can get out of control. Ease tension, calm your breathing, and focus on the task at hand with this simple breathing exercise. Inhale for 6 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and exhale for 10 seconds. Do this for 3 minutes.

Exposure to damaging substances such as cigarette smoke, pollution, stress and intense exercise mean they can rapidly increase in quantity in your body. Eating foods that contain antioxidant Vitamins C and E will ensure that free radicals are kept in check. Find these vitamins in most fruit and veg - e.g blackcurrants, strawberries, oranges, tomatoes, broccoli, green peppers and baked potatoes, sunflower and sesame seeds, peanuts and peanut butter, avocado, oily fish & egg yolks.

Catching up with our Karate Kid After being crowned European Karate Champion in November 2014, excelling and building on last year’s Silver medal winning achievement. Brandon Jewell is well under way in his 2015 pre-season conditioning. We have outlined a 24 week programme which will lead him into the start of his new season. He will compete at the World Championships in Japan, as well as the British and European Championships. He’s currently in his hyper trophy phase where he completes 4 weights sessions a week with us together with 4 England training technical sessions. Brandon has undergone extensive fitness testing and we have highlighted areas of strength and weakness which we look to focus on in the coming months.
Q Why do you incorporate plyometrics into your sport specific training? A To improve power in vertical jumping, long jumping, sprinting and sprint cycling. Q Who should do this type of training? A Anyone with fitness and performance goals! Q What type of exercises are they? A Exercises include box jumping, hopping and band work. Q How many exercises do you include in a programme? A Just 1 or 2 different types of plyometric exercises completed 1-3 x per week for a few months can significantly improve motor performance. Small sets of reps per session are most beneficial. Directions: Place nuts in a food processor. Blend into fine crumbs. Add in apricots until combined then add other ingredients. Add some water if the mixture is still crumbly – 1 tsp at a time. Scoop out with a large spoon, then halve. Roll into little balls. Coat in cocoa or dessicated coconut. Store in the fridge/freezer. Makes approx. 20

The pituitary gland is an endocrine (hormone-producing) gland, often dubbed the “master gland” because its hormones control other parts of the endocrine system, namely the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, ovaries and testes. Approximately only about 1/3 of an inch in diameter (that’s about as large as a pea) and located at the base of the brain, the gland stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Cortisol is vital in controlling your metabolism, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure. It also works to stimulate the ovaries to produce an ovum (egg) for fertilisation the testes to produce sperm, increasing fertility. It is one part of a special messenger system, helping to regulate a wide variety of the body’s functions. The pituitary gland helps to control your body’s functions by releasing hormones (special chemical messengers) into your bloodstream. These hormones are transported in your blood to their target. Here they usually cause the release of a second hormone. The target can either be specialised endocrine glands or other types of body tissue such as groups of cells. Your body is in a constant state of change. Your heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature all change in response to what you do and your surroundings. Your body has special systems that constantly monitor these and other vital functions. Not only must these systems monitor changes, they must also respond and help the body to restore its natural balance.

YOUR JOURNEY TOWARDS TOTAL FITNESS By Adrian Woodall, Westover CrossFit Head Coach and Personal Trainer at the West Hants Club.
oes your current exercise regime contain the variety to provide you with total fitness? What is total fitness? Although psychologically this varies from one person to the next, physiologically speaking the human body boasts a set of general physical skills that can be categorised into the following ten; Cardiovascular/Respiratory endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance and Accuracy. You are only as ‘fit’ as your weakest in any of these ten general physical skills. Now ask yourself again, does your current exercise regime contain the stimulus to develop all ten attributes of total physical fitness? We stick to our strengths, it’s a natural instinct. We feel more comfortable doing the things we are good at, we enjoy succeeding at them, and we don’t like having to struggle with something that we aren’t naturally as good at. Look in any commercial gym for proof, the thick-set strong guys in the weights area, the lighter framed endurance guys on the treadmills. Obviously there is validity in playing to your strengths at certain times and situations, just not when it comes to building total fitness. An athlete that is ‘proficient’ at all ten general physical skills rather than ‘outstanding’ at just one is the athlete with better total fitness. Transfer this to everyday life, walking, running, playing sport or with the kids, lifting and moving objects, climbing stairs, cycling, swimming, everyday chores. Many of us will be lucky enough to take these things for granted, many will not, but we can all take steps towards improving or prolonging our quality of life by moving better, for longer, and being more resilient to injury.
YES, BECOMING A ‘JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES’ IS GOOD! ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CROSSFIT PHRASES THAT PERFECTLY SUMS UP ITS IDEA OF TOTAL FITNESS IS - ‘OUTLIFT A RUNNER, OUT RUN A LIFTER!’ So how do you do this? One great way is CrossFit!
There are a few questions that I get asked regularly so here’s a little Westover CrossFit FAQ: Q. What is CrossFit? A. CrossFit is an extremely efficient and effective way to get into great shape. The CrossFit training system started at a maverick gym in Santa Cruz and quickly spread to Olympic and professional athletes, police and military special operations units, champion martial artists, and – like most of us at Westover CrossFit – everyday people looking for a superior way to get in great shape. CrossFit workouts involve constantly varied functional movements (including Olympic lifts, press-ups, pull-ups, running, jumping, rowing, kettle bells, burpees, box jumps, etc.), performed at high intensity (relative to your physical limits). Q. I’ve heard people get injured…will I get injured? A. Pretty much anything you do in life can injure you if you don’t do it correctly or haven’t taken into consideration your current level of fitness, strength, flexibility or health. Footballers pull hamstrings, tennis players and golfers
get elbow problems, runners get shin splints, and if you’re spending too much time on the sofa right now, that’s hurting you too! Inactivity is a major contributor to obesity, high blood pressure and a whole host of health issues. The safest thing to do is to learn safe and effective ttechnique BEFORE applying intensity. By increasing your strength and flexibility, this will actually make it harder for you to get hurt! CrossFit done properly is both safe and potent. But it’s all down to the coach… Q. Where and who? THIS MONTH, THE GAME TALKS EXCLUSIVELY TO BOURNEMOUTH BASED BRITISH CHAMPIONS AND ENGLAND’S NO1 INTERNATIONAL PAIR, JAKE SHEAF AND CHRIS GREGORY TO FIND OUT ABOUT A VERY BUSY END TO 2014, WHAT THEIR GOALS ARE FOR 2015 AND PREPARATIONS FOR THE RIO OLYMPICS IN 2016. HI TEAM SHEAF/GREGORY! THANKS FOR SPEAKING TO US. CAN YOU TELL US HOW YOU GOT INTO BEACH VOLLEYBALL AND WHEN YOU STARTED PLAYING… Chris: Well, a slightly different story for the both of us - I went through a UK Sport Talent Identification Programme called ‘Sporting Giants’. Sporting Giants looked for tall potential talent for the future in Rowing, Handball and Volleyball - at 6ft 10 I applied to be part of the process along with around 4,000 other applicants and made the GB Development Squad with three others that made it through trials and testing phases. Jake: For myself, it was slightly different, my mum played beach volleyball for England and had to end her Olympic dream short to look after my brother Luke and I as we were very young at the time. I began playing more seriously at age 14/15…then went onto the men’s senior beach programme based in Bath at 16. …AND WHEN DID YOU BECOME A PAIR? Jake and I linked up in 2012, we had previous partners beforehand. Jake was competing with his brother Luke in a bid to qualify for London 2012 but when it became impossible to qualify due to lack of funding, we both knew we were the partnership that could achieve something special, and things fell into place naturally.

TELL US ABOUT THE RECENT INTERNATIONAL FINALS EVENT AT THE END OF 2014… The last events of the year were big ones for us as they were World Tour - the highest level of which we’d only played one together before earlier in the year in Long Beach, California. They took us to Qatar and South Africa where it was crucial we secured personal best results to earn valuable world ranking points that would contribute to our ultimate goal for 2015 which was reaching the first European Games for Team GB. We will find out our fate for the Baku European Games in the coming weeks. …AND WHAT ARE THE BIG EVENTS HAPPENING IN 2015 THAT YOU’RE NOW TRAINING FOR? As mentioned - Baku 2015 is a major multi sport event that will pick up a lot of hype as we edge closer to it. However, this year marks the beginning of the Olympic Qualification period ending 22nd of June 2016. Our 12 best results on the World Tour will determine our Olympic qualification, or not… REPRESENTING YOUR COUNTRY MUST BE A VERY PROUD FEELING? It means a lot to us, we bear the flag proud especially in a sport where Great Britain hasn’t really established themselves as a threat before. Now that’s changing and is something we are proud of - we also want to have a positive impact on the sport at home which is really important to us.
YOU’VE PLAYED IN MANY GAMES FOR YOUR COUNTRY, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY THAT REALLY STAND OUT AND WHY? There are some really special moments for sure - out of the 16 international events we played in this year, one of the ones that stands out was actually here in Bournemouth. We competed in Round 1 of what’s called the ‘Continental Cup’ which is 6 Rounds of Olympic qualification over 3 years. We had an amazing home victory as the underdogs against the Switzerland number 1 pair

DO YOU GET ON AS WELL OFF THE COURT AS YOU DO ON?! To be honest - you should be asking the question the other way around! We are the closest of friends and if we ever don’t get on, it’s on the court but it doesn’t happen a lot and one thing we’ve improved on this year is emotional control with the help of our psychologist, Bournemouth University based, Dr Emma Kavanagh. Some teams don’t like each other, we are fortunate to have a strong bond off the court and when we take that into a match, we can be very difficult to break down and beat.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? IS RIO 2016 PART OF THAT? We are very much on the ‘Road 2 Rio’. The Olympics is the pinnacle of sport and our life’s dream that we share. However, we know the journey to becoming one of the top teams in the world is a long one, and requires an investment of many years on the world tour - we have a legitimate chance of qualifying for Rio 2016 - but the longer term goal is medal success at 2020. We are still young - and if we can make what we do sustainable with support from UK Sport, we have 3 if not 4 Olympic cycles in us that could take us to 2028, if we look after our bodies physically. HOW CAN PEOPLE GET INVOLVED WITH VOLLEYBALL IF THEY WANTED TO GIVE IT A TRY? In Bournemouth, there is no better way to get involved than through the ‘Deep Dish Beach Volleyball Club’. In London, the ‘Crystal Palace Beach Volleyball Club’ offers a great facility, coaching and more importantly, an amazing group of friendly people that love being part of the clubs family. HALL OF FAME In 2013, we interviewed Harrison Craddock, an up and coming Karate Kid. Having scooped 1st place in the regionals, he went on to the nationals proving he had the skills in his sport to go far. We welcome Harrison back this month to our Hall of Fame to get an update on a very busy 2014 and find out what he is now aiming for in 2015… Hi Harrison, welcome back to The Game magazine. You had quite an end to 2014, can you tell us about your wins? My first win in 2014 was in the Southern Regionals in April, I was placed 1st in Kata but unfortunately didn’t make it through the first round in the sparring due to the competition being slightly tougher this time but as I won the Kata, it meant I could go through to the nationals in October and compete in all sections. The nationals were held in Stratford upon Avon and it was the best one yet. This was where I got the title I’ve been after ‘National Champion’ for Kata in my age/belt category. Sparring was a little bit more evenly matched this time by winning my first fight. I lost the other but it was very close and I came away with a 3rd. My younger brother, Rhys, came away with his first gold in sparring. Do you feel like your confidence and skills have grown since we last spoke to you in 2013? Yes very much so. I have changed Dojo so now I am training under the chief instructor, Ernie Molyneux, 8th Dan of EGKA, which has helped me on a huge scale. My confidence has grown and I have developed physically and mentally. I have another years training under my belt and have progressed my skills even further due to the change of Dojo. I am now training with adults and senior black belts which is pushing me on in my ability, this will all help me for this coming year. Can you tell us about the styles you practise, where you train and what kinds of movements and actions they involve? The style I practise is Gōjū-ryū, ‘go’ meaning hard and ‘ju’ meaning soft. Gōjū-ryū is one of the main traditional Okinawan styles of Karate, featuring a combination of hard and soft techniques. It is created from a style of Kung Fu and uses circular movements (soft) but also strong, fast techniques (hard). I am training with Ernie Molyneux at Bournemouth Karate Academy. We heard you’ve been out in the chilly winter sea to do some surfing…how cold is it in there?! It’s absolutely freezing but the swell is great in the winter! What’s on the cards for this year and what are you currently training for? This year, I have got the regionals and the nationals again and I am pushing for my second Dan. I also have the possibility of competing in some open style competitions this year which will be interesting and the opportunity to train with Morio Higaonna’s (10th Dan and head of EGKA in Okinawa, Japan in March) body guard. Hi Gary, thanks for taking the time to talk to us about your sport. Firstly tell us what it is you do and how you started out. No problem! I’m a semi professional Mixed Martial Artist and Muay Thai fighter from Bournemouth. I started training a few years ago for fitness and to boost my confidence. Where do you train? I train at IPPON in Bournemouth town centre. I also train at Sakpraserts Muay Thai in Boscombe. You currently fight semi pro. Will you look to turn pro and how will that come about? Yeah, I had a few semi pro MMA fights and have just started fighting Thai boxing. My plan is to win an area Muay Thai title before turning to professional MMA fighting. Tell us about your last fight in November. It was my first Muay Thai fight. I was matched up against Poole Thai boxing academy fighter and coach, Lewis Harrison. It was an interesting match as Lewis is really dangerous with his kicks and me, with my hands. I trained really hard and almost stopped the fight with punches, but Lewis was tough and took it to a decision which I won unanimously. My best friend and coach, Jonny Millwall was ringside after just beating cancer. He had his operation two days before the fight and discharged himself from hospital especially to see me fight... how could I lose with inspiration like that?! You’re currently training for your next big fight on Shock ‘n’ Awe. How’s the training going for that? It’s going great! I couldn’t be happier, I have some great people around me and I’m confident I can get the knock out against Matt Dunne from GYM-01. Shock ‘n’ Awe is where the top fighters in the UK are brought together to test their skills. It’s amazing to be picked to fight on such a big stage, so I’m working as hard as possible to prove to myself I belong there! Do you get to find out much about your opponent? I try to find out a bit about them. It helps avoid any nasty surprises during the fight. A lot of people that know us both said Harrison had my number and he would use his kicks to end me in November, so we’ve worked a lot on countering his kicks with my coaches to get close enough to throw my big punches and it paid off. I actually had a sparring
session with Matt Dunne a few months ago and now we are matched. He is a very fit, aggressive fighter. Judging from what I know about Matt, I would predict the fight will be packed full of action and will really test my heart, but I think my power will be a bit too much for him. How does your sport increase your fitness levels? Without a doubt, fighters are some of the fittest athletes there are. You’re using your whole body to produce as much speed and power as possible, you have to constantly be moving and using your head, your reactions have to be second to none. You can’t be lazy in the gym because you will soon be shown up in front of a lot of people! We use a lot of HIIT techniques, such as hill sprints, circuits, pad work and sparring to get us ready to fight. Do you take part in any other sports? I want to try as many things as possible. Bikram yoga, surfing, gymnastics, dance, snowboarding, running and cycling...it all interests me but at the momen, I don’t take part in anything that isn’t going to help me get those wins!! What’s it like training with Jeff Lawson at IPPON? Jeff is a great friend, he’s been there through thick and thin for me and always has my best interests at heart! His gym is a really inspiring place full of great people! I also have to thank my training partners Bernie Mendietta, Molly McCann, Oscar Loco and Mason Hobbs, Andy Kerr and everyone else that puts so much time into me. We are like a family and we are all really proud of each other! Do you stick to any special diet to help with your fitness? Not really, I don’t believe in special diets. I simply cut out junk food, eat as many vegetables as possible, include good proteins and plenty of water. If I do want a treat, I’ll allow myself to be a bit naughty sometimes. It’s all about balance. I feel fantastic. What would you say to people reading this thinking of giving your sport a go? Forget what you think you know about ‘fighters’. We are all there to help each other achieve our goals and we have great fun doing it! Come down and try a class out... but don’t blame me if you become addicted! This month, The Game talks to Ian Watkin, manager of Poole Town Youth FC U8’s. He shares some of the ups and downs of the current season highlights of moments to remember.
ABOUT
Poole Town Youth are a local FA Charter Standard Club who has teams for children from U7 to 17 years old. I manage and coach the under 8’s team who currently train every Saturday at the Canford Magna 3G pitches. I contacted the club to enquire about starting an Under 7’s team in early 2014 as my son was keen to play football. After meeting the committee, it was agreed that I could create the team and I started holding regular Saturday training sessions. The team consists of both boys and girls and we play in the Bournemouth Youth Football league in non competitive matches that allow the kids to play other teams without having the pressure of having to win. The benefits for the kids are obvious as they get to run around every weekend in the fresh air enjoying football with their team mates.
retired from my team ‘Real Mustard’ (local 5 a-side team) and moved back into coaching in 2014... some would say it was about time! Watching the team play each Sunday is better than watching professionals, even when the kids forget they are in a match and stop to chat to each other in the middle of the game! As well as playing football, we try and hold regular social gatherings and gettogethers for the kids including the annual bowling tournament (see photo) and in March, we are going as a team for a coaching session at AFC Bournemouth before watching them take on Blackpool. I manage and coach the team and I have two parents who help me out with the coaching (Barry-John and Gary) and between the three of us, we run weekly training sessions which focus on allowing the kids to fall in love with playing football whilst learning new skills and techniques. As coaches, we follow the FA Coaching Guidelines and the Club ensures that we follow the FA Respect Charter at all times. I completed my FA coaching badges in 2007 and helped out a few local clubs but moved away from coaching to continue playing. After a title winning season, I

MISSION NO.28 DYNAMICA PILATES Last month, Jo tested her balance with Maverick Slacklines and managed to successfully walk across a narrow strap, with a little help from the experts! This month, Jo and Harry joined a class to ‘have a go’ at Dynamica Pilates in Bournemouth. This next step from standard mat Pilates uses a special machine called a ‘Reformer’, a system or springs straps and pulleys that all work together giving a no-impact stretching and toning workout. We spoke to Jo and Harry before and after the session to get their feedback and thoughts about Dynamica Pilates.

Hi Jo and Harry. How are your New Year health regimes going?! J: Well, it’s been a bit delayed for me. I woke up with flu on Boxing Day so was really poorly but I’m feeling a lot better now and looking forward to getting fit and active this year. H: I seem to have added a bit too much “winter insulation” to my body, so I need to get active again and get myself in shape.
That looked like a completely different workout; can you tell us what it was like? J: I feel amazing! Really stretched and quite different to when I walked into the studio having been hunched at my desk all morning. It feels like I’ve woken up lots of muscles that haven’t been used for ages. H: I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but I definitely feel like I’ve worked hard during the session. The style of Dynamica suits me down to the ground. I found it really rewarding; trying the exercises, feeling the effects and then working through them.
This month we’re sending you to Dynamica Pilates in Bournemouth to have a class with Director, Mark Probee. Have you tried anything like this before? J: I’ve done mat Pilates before and Bikram Yoga but nothing using machines. Looks really interesting! H: Never. A couple of family members have done Yoga and matbased Pilates before and they’ve really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to having a go. 38

How was it using the ‘Reformer’ board and can you explain how you use it for the different exercises? J: The board is like your friend… sounds really strange, I know, but it supports you and works with you to stretch and strengthen
your body. You literally do your warm-up, training exercises and stretching working with the board. I could really feel different groups of muscles working for the various movements and feel like I’m now standing a lot straighter. H: The ‘Reformer’ board was great. It looks complicated at first, but was really straight forward to use and incredibly effective at maximising your workout. The board uses a set of springs to act as resistance on the sliding base, but it also uses cable-ropes which help you work different parts of your body. It looked both relaxing and hard work in places; did you feel like you were working your body? J: There was a stretch towards the end which felt incredible. It worked every part of your spine and accompanied with the correct breathing techniques, really was an effective exercise for me. I have had back issues for a long time and this one movement, I think, could get me hooked to this style of exercise! H: I could feel something, but I didn’t feel like I was having to work half as hard to achieve the effect as I would if I were at the gym. The focus on having complete control of each movement feels like you’re working more effectively. What did you think of your instructor and the gym overall? J: The gym has a really lovely atmosphere as soon as you walk in. The chill out music played a big part to that. Mark Probee, Director of Dynamica was very friendly and clearly extremely knowledgeable and passionate about this form of Pilates. The class can have a maximum of 8 people per session
which I really like. Sometimes, with too many people in a room, it can be too much. H: Mark was brilliant, a clear and reassuring instructor, who is an obvious expert in Dynamica Pilates. The gym area looks great, very stylish and has everything you would expect of a top class workout facility. Who can take part in this form of Pilates? J: Men and women both enjoy Dynamica and see real benefits from the very first session. It doesn’t matter how flexible or fit you are, the support of the board and caring guidance from the instructors means you can work your body and strengthen your muscles whatever size and shape you are. H: It’s open to everyone and it caters for all different needs and targets. Men would definitely see the benefits too. Pilates was originally devised to help the recovery and rehabilitation of injured soldiers in the First World War. Finally, would you come back? J: Definitely. I’ve already recommended the 2 sessions for £12 introductory offer to some of my friends. H: For sure. Strengthening your core is important for anyone who plays sport and in day to day life. January was a bit of a mixed bag of results, how do you think the month has gone? It’s been a little bit indifferent. We had a fourteen game unbeaten run and it was always going to come to an end at some stage. The confidence is a great thing to have going into the matches but the chances of going to the end of the season undefeated were so minimal. There was no complacency in the squad and no other team in the league could have been anymore confident that our players. It’s been a mixed bag generally but you have to deal with this in football, especially in the Championship. It wasn’t the month we wanted by any means and it created a closer gap at the top but, we’re still top! These things happen and that’s why we love football so much; you can’t predict anything. We’ve got to make sure we have a better month in February. There’ll be so many twists and turns for every club top, middle and bottom. We have a busy month coming up with 6 league games in the shortest month of the year. Does the training regime change to cope with the rush of games? Yes, it does adapt around the games being played. The lads who don’t play regularly still train as normal but for the lads who play two matches a week, the manager is mindful of this. A lot of it is also down to how the players are feeling. There’s a responsibility with them and if they’re feeling tired, the gaffer will expect them to let him know. He won’t let anyone train who isn’t feeling 100% or in the right frame of mind. We have our fitness coaches who monitor the players everyday, talk to them regularly and have all the science to back it up. The training remains as intense as it normally is but it might be for shorter periods between the frequent games. How is the current mood within the squad? The boys understand the fact that in a couple of games, we were beaten and should have got something out of the games. They’re not blind to that but they’ve still got to be confident with how far they’ve come. These next three months are the final push and this next month coming could define the rest of the season. Each game becomes more and more important. We need to go for another unbeaten run and if we get another one like we just had, we’ll be there or thereabouts at the end of the season and the squad are capable of doing it. They’ve just got to believe it. Winning is everything. We unfortunately went out of the cup late January against Premiership club, Aston Villa. What were your thoughts on the game and how we performed? I thought we were fabulous in the first half and were the better team. We took the game to Aston Villa and showed them what we were about. Although, you have to give credit to Aston Villa for their first goal which was top end Premiership quality. If Ronaldo took a goal like that, it would be shown all over the world for weeks to come. We had a few chances and got a goal late on. It was a great experience for the boys to be involved with the Premiership games; it is the level we want to get to. We made everybody stand up, look at us and see what we’re capable of. Our boys applied themselves fantastically and they should be very proud. We’re out of the cup but we’re now focused on the league.

Fletch’s Predictions February sees a very busy month of fixtures…what are your predictions for the games this month?
Wigan v AFCB They’re not thriving in the Championship as much as everyone thought they would. I think it will be tight, but I’m going for a Bournemouth victory. AFCB v Derby Big game. Everyone who finishes a place above or a place below Derby will be promoted. It’s going to be very tight; they turned us over 1-0 here last season. If we’re on our game, we’ll narrowly win a tight affair. AFCB v Huddersfield We beat them first game of the season 4-0, we’re at home and with love in the air, a definite victory for the Cherries. Brentford v AFCB A tough place to go. If we can come out of there with a point, it would be by no means a disgrace. Nottingham Forest v AFCB Big club, very up and down this season. They’ll be looking to pick up as their results have been a bit indifferent of late. We’ll have to be at our best and go one better than last season. AFCB v Blackburn A team we all think about, it’s not long ago they were in the Premier League. They’re a dark horse in the league so we’ll have to be at our best.

I played in a veteran’s game a few weeks ago. I enjoyed it but I think I’ll stick to my 5-aside on a Thursday night at the Littledown! There’s nobody more envious than myself of Bournemouth playing in the Championship, it was something that was missing off my CV and I would have loved to have played just for one minute. I join in with the training sessions when the gaffer gets me out and that’s hard enough! Envious…yes, but I’ll stay envious. I’m coming up to 43 years of age and my boots are well and truly brushed off and hung up.
