was a slight upturn for us last year and long may it continue. It’s the town’s sport and we’re quite good at it! It’s lovely that we can all collectively embrace something that we are good at and can be proud of. Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the Pirates fans? A huge thanks to everybody for all they’ve done in making the club what it is. I’m the custodian of the club at this point in time but it’s really everybody’s club – that’s how I feel. Happy New Year to everybody and lets all pull together and see what we can do next year collectively again and make it a successful 2015. A very Happy Christmas to everyone.

TALK FROM THE TOP n a special evening of celebration at the Poole Pirates Awards Event and with a huge turnout from both riders and fans, The Game caught up with Matt Ford, owner of Elite League 2014 winners, the Poole Pirates and Team Manager, Neil Middleditch to get their thoughts about the past season, hopes for the 2015 season and some words for the loyal followers. EXCLUSIVE WITH MATT FORD What a season! It certainly had its ups and downs but finished with a fantastic result. Summarise the season through your eyes. I certainly was up and down! Losing Darcy in August was probably the biggest thing to face but also the injuries before that really tested the club. It was difficult to keep going and stay competitive with everything that was chucked at us and it really was a great effort by everyone concerned and in the end, I believe, it was the right result. There were some great individual performances… any riders that stood out in particular for you? It’s difficult because every one of them did their job. Josh Grajczonek, Vaclav Milik, Przemyslaw Pawlicki - they all did well. Then obviously, the

timings were not good with Darcy’s suspension. But I guess the two that were leading from the front this year were Kyle Newman and Maciej Janowski who, stepping up to be captain, played his role brilliantly. You saw riders improve through all the difficulties we had. Magic has become world class, Kyle improved dramatically with the extra responsibility. All of them really did well and it’s unfair to pick anyone in particular, it’s a team sport. But those two perhaps stand out a little more for me. Back to back winners of the Elite League is no mean feat, can we expect 3 in 3?! Why not? It’s never been done. We were the only ones to have done the double in ‘03 and ‘04 and now again in ‘13 and ‘14. Who knows… what I do know is that when we start picking teams, people will take a great amount of interest in what we’re doing. There are always a couple of shocks and there will be next year as well. Can you tell us anything yet about the riders and plans for next season? It really is too early…we’re still waiting to hear on Darcy’s suspension and whether it will be a further ban or if he’ll be back riding. Availability is another thing… obviously Magic has qualified for the Grand Prix which gives him an extra 12 weekends of riding so that makes everything more difficult as well. There are a lot of things to find out first.

Wimborne Road again saw a great turnout through the season. How much of an influence does a good home support have? Without it, you just can’t cope. It’s an expensive sport and the wages are fairly steep. All the commitments in running any professional sport are expensive. The paying public are what keeps the club going and they came back in their numbers again last year. I do think there is a change in the country as a whole at the moment and people are beginning to experience better things again and we were no different… there

EXCLUSIVE WITH NEIL MIDDLEDITCH Congratulations Middlo! Thanks for talking to us. Winning 2 years on the bounce and 3 out of 4 years is incredible, what do you put the main success down to? I think just a passion really. Poole has always been associated with Speedway and the fans love the club. We love the fans and I think the enthusiasm that they bring and we bring is a combination which makes us win! Who were your standout riders of the season? Being an ex rider, you never really like to pick anyone out. In saying

that, Kyle Newman has come on leaps and bounds. It’s been a huge boost for him this season but everyone played their part and that’s the important thing. Is there anything you would like to say to the Pirates fans? I wish you a very Happy Christmas and don’t forget to support us next year because we’re going for the three in a row! The Game would like to congratulate the Elite League 2014 Champions for an incredible season. Look out next month for the first of a special two part gallery featuring pictures from the 2014 season.

RUGBY

2014 ROUND UP

ovember has been an important month for Bournemouth Rugby Club on and off the pitches. We held an event at the Marriot hotel to thank our business partners and presented them with Match shirts that have all of this year’s sponsors names and logos on. Sam Acton from Domestic Angels won the use of a BMW for a weekend and Four Square Garage won tickets to England v France in the raffle. We are hoping to have regular networking events throughout the year, details will be on our website under Events. We would like to invite our business partners and Supporters to join us for our regular pre game Supporter lunches, details are put on to the website and facebook pages during the week leading up to a home game, meals may be a buffet or hot meal depending on numbers. These events are a great networking opportunity and also help to raise

funds for the club. Our next home game is scheduled to be December the 13th against Old Redcliffians, come along and join us. Seats for supporters are also available on the away coaches for £10 a head, travelling with the First team. Departure times are put on the Facebook group on a Thursday for anyone interested, first come first served. Churchill have continued with sponsorship for this year and are due to provide a vinyl wrap for the shop which will make the shop much more eye catching. Ridgeway BMW have provided new advertising boards for the top front of the stand which is giving the stand a much more updated look. Both Churchill and Ridgeway BMW have also contributed to First team and Colts shirts. Quilter Cheviot, Holbourne and Four Square Garage have also been very kind this year helping to provide shirts for the First team and the Colts. We look forward to developing our business partnership over the next few years.

We also want to thank our numerous smaller sponsors who year after year support us by purchasing advertising in the programme, providing kit that we need, attending supporter lunches and helping with the Y&M Tournament that is held in the Easter Holidays. Without all of them, BRFC would not be as successful as it is. Spaces for advertising boards around the pitch, in the programme and numerous other opportunities are available, please contact us if you would like to be involved.

NUTRITION IDEAS FOR AN ALTERNATIVE CH BY SEAN BURGESS (MSC) Question: What do comical turtle neck jumpers, Baileys the drink and the band, Slade all have in common? Answer: They only come out at Christmas! (easy one I know). Looking within the above query is an intentional link which highlights that we British always stick to tradition, no matter how bizarre it is and whether we really like it or not. For example, heading into 2015 chasing a cheese roll down a hill in Gloucester enters its 18th year and worm charming in Cheshire continues to go from strength to strength decades after its initiation. However, these small traditions of course fail to compare with one of the longest and biggest worldwide traditions of all, the annual feast every December 25th. Are you like me? Do you cringe when writers insert sometimes outdated and randomly sourced quotes to validate an argument? For example, here is a good one I googled myself which argues why we should always stick to tradition: “When a tradition gathers enough strength to go on for centuries, you don’t just turn it off one day” (Chinua Achebe). It’s an interesting socio-economic debate - should we, as residents of a country, always stick to its traditions and is there an ethical issue with trying to break them? This Christmas, over 10 million turkeys will be eaten in the UK but sales in beef surprisingly will only match about 25% of this. Sales in other meats or alternatives will be less than this figure again. With variety being the spice of life, this article will look to discuss a few meat and non-meat based alternatives that you can potentially consider utilising in your traditional Christmas meal this year.

08

Turkey vs The Rest Well, it seems only right to discuss Turkey which has been around for over 10 million years and is the nucleus of this debate first. Turkey breast being a primarily white meat, is a healthy nutritional option being that it is low in saturated fat but high in protein and contains quantities of water soluble vitamins B and C alongside minerals such as zinc and iron. Turkey additionally releases amino acids (protein) and hormones such as acid tryptophan and selenium which both play a key role in supporting our immune system acting as an antioxidant. All sounds pretty good then, but like any meat, there is a disadvantage to regular turkey consumption as well. In most circumstances, processed turkey can be high in sodium (salt) which as you might know, can raise your blood pressure and potentially lead to heart failure! To guarantee the quality of your turkey this Christmas, try and buy organic and ensure it is cooked until piping hot all the way through. Half Time Interlude The debate about eating the skin on cooked Turkey and other meats is an interesting one that still rages on to the present day. In a recent WH foods study, researchers found no significant difference in

The Alternative Christmas Meats Away from the half time debate and back to the second half, the conclusion to this article will now look over a few non-turkey Christmas dinner alternatives, don’t worry though, it won’t take you 45 minutes to read through. RED MEATS Duck Much the same as Turkey, eating Duck will provide you with a complete source of protein, more when skinless. The other similarity to Turkey is duck contains most of the same vitamins and minerals as mentioned above, however Duck unlike Turkey is also a good source of vitamin A which helps strengthen your eye sight and immune system. Don’t be put off by the appearance of duck fat either on your plate as it contains high amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats which are both essential for your health and, moreover, tastes really good!

pancreatic cancer risk between two control groups who consumed 1 to 4 ounces per day of Turkey; one group eating the meat with the skin on and one group eating the meat with the skin off. These same results were not true for beef however, which was associated with a slightly increased pancreatic cancer risk. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that pastureraised poultry and grass-fed beef were not standards used in this study. It would be expected that the risk-lowering benefits of all meats would increase if study participants consumed grass-fed and pastureraised foods. Through clinical trials, Lilian Cheung from the Harvard’s School of Public Health has found most skin on meats such as turkey contains more beneficial monounsaturated than saturated fats. If you are unaware, monounsaturated fats can have a positive effect on weight loss and help to decrease cancer, cholesterol, heart disease and stroke. Despite being fine to eat you should still be cautious, especially women, as the skin on most poultry meats is still more calorific and does have more saturated fat to it than skinless meat. In addition, the skin on non-organic meat will have a higher amount of pesticides and other unwanted contaminants on it, the lesson again as true with all food buy organic.

Goose Goose meat is another delicious alternative to your more traditional Christmas meats, however it does have its short comings as it is a fattier and more gamey meat than duck and actually has more saturated than monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats. Venison For those of you that don’t know, Venison is a red meat commonly associated with eating deer, but the term can also apply to eating other animals such as elk and moose. In any guise, Venison offers a great complete protein, essential fat and vitamin B source and has been proven to be lower in calories and saturated fat than its often compared counterpart, beef. Despite having virtually no saturated fat, Venison does have a significant amount of cholesterol, typically around 30% of your dietary value. E AS RECIP

Nut Roast For the non-meat eaters, there is a Christmas alternative for you which hasn’t been mentioned yet, I refer to popular healthy vegetarian dish the ‘nut roast’. Nuts are nutritious as they are energy dense and contain fibre, potassium and monounsaturated fats. Published studies by the New England Journal of Medicine have even identified nuts as being able to reduce the risk of heart disease. Therefore a nut roast when served with lots with lots of vitamin rich vegetables is a very healthy meat alternative.

The other traditional Christmas meats (Chicken, Beef and Pork) Right, so I realise that eating chicken, beef or even pork with your Christmas dinner is not that alternative and, for most, is part of a normal routine so here is some further information about your other favourite festive foods. Chicken is one of the most complete sources of protein and is a good source of minerals such as selenium, zinc, niacin your B vitamins and Vitamin E the super vitamin in regards to antioxidant protection. To a slightly lesser degree, beef and pork are also good protein and mineral sources but just be warned these latter two meats are also higher in saturated fats and have been linked with higher ‘bad cholesterol’ levels.

WE’RE SPEAKING TO LOCAL CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE INVOLVED IN DIFFERENT SPORTS ACROSS THE AREA TO FIND OUT THEIR MOTIVATION AND AMBITION ABOUT TAKING PART IN THE SPORTS THEY LOVE IN OUR ‘ONE TO WATCH’ FEATURE. NAME: PATRICK SYLLA AGE: 16 SPORT: LONG JUMP SCHOOL: HAREWOOD COLLEGE

Patrick Sylla is a year 11 student at Harewood College who partakes in a wide range of athletics events, most notably long jump. Athletics is Patrick’s main sport. He does, however, enjoy participating in many others. He has represented Harewood College for rugby, badminton and rowing (where his team secured a British record). Both Patrick’s father and sister have competed in the world of sport. In fact, his sister represented the county at The English Schools’ Competition in multi-events. In his free time, Patrick enjoys going to the gym with his uncle and playing football with his friends. Recently, Patrick had to make the tough choice between athletics and rugby when he was offered the chance to join the Bath Rugby academy. HI PATRICK, TELL US HOW YOU FIRST GOT INTO ATHLETICS… I started indoor athletics when I was in Year 4 and then progressed into ‘quad kids.’ It was here that I got spotted and then asked by my coach, Zac Kerin, to start training more regularly. When I joined Harewood College, I really began to progress as my club coach and PE teachers were in regular contact. WHAT WAS IT ABOUT LONG JUMP THAT MADE IT YOUR CHOSEN DISCIPLINE TO MASTER? It is more complicated than everyone first thinks. I like the difficulty of the event and the challenges in training. My coach used to be a long jumper so he is a good inspiration to me. I also have a great training partner who pushes me to keep improving.

WHERE TO GO

Departing from locations all over the UK, we are lucky enough to be able to reach the best resorts across the planet. The ‘world is your oyster’ depending on your budget and preference with the option to travel to the likes of America, Canada or closer to home; Europe. They all host some incredible resorts that will cater for beginners through to experts. Our Top 5 picks across Europe Serre Chevalier, France Made up of four villages and with 250km of piste, Serre Chavalier is the number 1 non-linked ski area in France. Suitable for all levels and renowned for its off-piste, this high alpine ski resort also has great après ski. St Anton, Austria In the Austrian Tirol, St Anton attracts some hardcore skiers. Now covering 340km of piste which caters for all abilities this ever popular resort also offers fantastic food, shopping and nightlife. Livigno, Italy Livigno is one of the most well equipped ski resorts in the Alps. This Italian resort has something for everyone and is perfect for expert skiers to satisfy their need for speed whilst families and beginners can enjoy gentle, wide runs. 115km of slopes including three snow parks with half pipes, rails and kickers. Les 2 Alpes, France One of the best resorts in Europe offering wide, gentle nursery slopes, fast cruising red runs and also some of the best off-piste down to La Grave. The glacier at the top of the mountain guarantees snow and exceptional views all year round. Challenging off-piste, world class snow park and a high energy party culture, Les 2 Alpes has something for everyone. Soldeu, Andorra In 2004 Soldeu and Pas de la Casa teamed up and created the Grandvalira super ski area with over 200km of piste. The resort now has a state of the art lift system which is designed to allow you to maximise your time on the snow. The strong Catalan influences make for a lively après ski environment.

THINGS TO KNOW… KIT HIRE

Unless you are an experienced skier or boarder, don’t go spending hundreds on a new snowboard or skis as every resort allows you to rent skis and boards to suit all abilities.

LIFT PASS

This can be a sizeable hidden expense depending on which resort you are in. Do your research before you go and if you’re not planning to ski every day you are in resort, it may be cheaper to buy individual day passes. Check whether you need to take a passport style photo as most resorts require this as identification on your pass.

INSURANCE

It is wise to take travel insurance that specifically covers winter sports as should anything unfortunate happen, a large bill is likely without this. Shop around for the best deals before you go.

DRIVING

If you are driving to your resort, snow chains are essential. Even though most mountain roads are cleared, when it starts snowing, the roads can be covered in minutes.

SKI SCHOOL

Bigger resorts generally offer more than one ski school with English speaking instructors and also cater not just for beginners but also offer the chance to perfect technique.

PRACTISE

Why not learn the basics or give yourself a refresher before you go? With the great facilities of Snowtrax on our doorstep, you can brush up on your skills or get some valuable tuition from the experts to prepare yourself for your winter break.

NETBALL / VIPER 10

STEPHANIE ESSEX Creative Director

WE’RE SPEAKING TO LOCAL WOMEN INVOLVED IN DIFFERENT SPORTS AND SPORTS RELATED BUSINESSES ACROSS THE AREA TO FIND OUT ABOUT THEIR MOTIVATION, PASSION AND DRIVE FOR THEIR WORK AND THEIR GAME. NAME: STEPHANIE ESSEX CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT VIPER 10 SPORTSWEAR This month we speak to Stephanie Essex, Creative Director at top local sportswear brand, Viper 10. We talk about her sporting history and ask what it’s like to run one of the UK’s major sport labels. HI STEPHANIE, THANK YOU FOR TALKING TO US. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NETBALL HISTORY? I started playing netball at school like most girls and then gradually worked my way into the England Talent set up over a couple of seasons where I was selected for the England U19s to compete at the European Championships. From there, I made a decision to go to the University of Bath alongside a number of my England U19 team mates where we could all train together in their high performance programme. I studied Civil & Architectural Engineering, which was a male dominated course, but ultimately it was all about the netball for me! YOU PLAYED AT A HIGH LEVEL IN THE SUPERLEAGUE AND FOR THE ENGLAND U21S, WHAT WAS THE GREATEST MOMENT DURING THAT TIME? Winning the European Championships was obviously a highlight and playing on TV in Superleague matches was great too however, my greatest moment on a personal level was winning the BUCS final with Bath University against Loughborough University. As a team, we were all such good friends and had a number of injuries amongst us going into the final but winning that game and celebrating with numerous nights out was a real highlight looking back. Nothing has topped that season for me; ultimately playing and winning with your friends when the odds are against you creates fantastic memories, as do the nights out afterwards! TELL US ABOUT HOW YOUR ROLE AT VIPER 10 CAME ABOUT… Roger Woodall, CEO of Diamond Sporting Group was looking to create a sportswear

brand. Sophie Christy, our Managing Director had introduced me to the company as a netball connection and Roger asked me if I would like to help design the brand - I haven’t looked back since. I am ‘self-taught’ on a lot of design software but my skill set in Engineering allowed me to bring a lot of 3D aspects to Viper 10 and raise the bar in terms of how we showcased our products in comparison to our competitors. We spent 2 years on research and development for Viper 10 which involved looking worldwide to find the perfect factories, researching competitors, designing our website and creating great products before launching the brand in March 2012. HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR PLAYING HISTORY HAS HAD AN IMPACT ON THE DESIGN AND RANGE OF SPORTSWEAR YOU CREATE? It has had a massive impact on how I design and how I encourage our in-house design team to think, particularly with how our Netball range looks. Wackier designs had been lightly introduced in Rugby 7s but no one was looking at the female market saying we can create some really awesome designs that look great and make a statement. We have also raised the bar in terms of designs across other sports such as Rugby, Hockey and Cycling. Our Viper 10 designs have ambition and are becoming the future of bespoke apparel for the team wear market. As a player, I was fed up with playing in boring kit with a coloured panel down the side so used the opportunity in Viper 10 to help shake up the market. The feedback from teams and players has been great so it is really satisfying to be having an impact particularly within female sport. WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE OF CREATIVE DIRECTOR INVOLVE? My role is quite broad as day to day I oversee the Viper 10 team in all areas of the business from design through to sales. The areas in my role I thrive on are coming up with ambitious new designs and products and seeing them as finished products that teams love to wear. I’m often burning the midnight oil working on a new idea! I also work closely with our factories, which are all based in the UK and Europe to ensure we are always hitting our 4-6 week turnaround on bespoke orders. The team at Viper 10 is fantastic, we really are like a family and this also adds to the entrepreneurial spirit of the brand. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE ONLINE 3D KIT DESIGN FUNCTION ON YOUR WEBSITE? Teams take a lot of pride in their kit designs and so we thought what better way for teams to be a part of the process than for them to design their own kit on our 3D Kit Designers. We have dedicated 3D Kit Designers for Rugby, Netball, Cycling, Hockey,

Dodgeball and Football. Teams can choose from a range of designs, test out colour variations, get an instant quote and share the designs with their teammates on email or social media. It is a fantastic tool for us and adds greatly to our customer’s experience. The world is turning digital and we can communicate with our customers via our office in Bournemouth. We don’t need dedicated salesmen on the road driving up and down the country, which is another example of how Viper 10 is breaking the mould. WHAT IS YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE RUN UP TO THE FESTIVAL? Because there are so many Bournemouth 7s teams that get their kit through Viper 10 Sportswear, we work nonstop in the lead up designing kits and getting them manufactured in time for the festival. We also have a Viper 10 Lounge at Bournemouth 7s which is next to the National Cup Pitch so a lot of our energy during this period is focused on how we can give Viper 10 teams an even better experience at the festival with perks, freebies, hot tubs, a shop to buy products in and drinks to help them refuel and recharge. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ITEM OF VIPER 10 CLOTHING? My favourite item of clothing has to be our Viper 10 iHoody. It is one of Viper 10’s most technical products and has lots of details such as thumbholes, an iPocket for your iPod and an iLoop for your headphones. Ultimately all of Viper 10’s hoodies are wardrobe favourites of mine as they are super soft and have such a nice fit. We plan to extend our hoody range in 2015 and are on a mission to become the King of Hoodies! VIPER 10 PLANS FOR 2015? Viper 10 will be launching a new online shop range in Spring 2015, which is very exciting for our team and also for our customers. We are also working on new designs to be released which the Tour and 7s market are going to love and we can’t wait to see them all in action at Bournemouth 7s next year! WHAT SPORTS DO YOU CURRENTLY CATER FOR AND WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE FOR TEAMS OR CLUBS TO FIND OUT MORE? As a multisport brand, we cater for pretty much all sports and work with large Schools & Universities in the UK to kit out all their teams. We specialise in Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Dodgeball and Cycling. The best place to find out more is to check out our website or call our friendly team. IT’S CHRISTMAS, BUT DON’T PANIC!

WEST HANTS

BY MARK DALEY For the fitness enthusiasts among us who want to keep on top of their condition there’s no need to feel that the impending Christmas treats are going to pile on a load of unwanted pounds that will take weeks of calorie watching and exercising to take off again. Sure, if you went to a certain chain of Frozen Food supermarkets (that ironically share the name of the healthiest country on earth) and buy copious packets of processed goods, you’ll be on a slippery slope, but think about the positive aspect of the festivities nutrition. For a start, turkey is one of the leanest meats, with extremely good protein content, high in all your essential amino acids. I tend to use a butcher local to the club who sources all produce locally and I know it’s fresh and truly free range. It’s a good idea to do your research and get to know your local butcher. It really doesn’t work out much more expensive than supermarket meat, if at all, and it generally tastes better. Add to this all the vegetables that we pile on the plate like Brussel sprouts, peas, cabbage, parsnips and even potatoes in moderation which are all full of micronutrients and antioxidants. In fact the Christmas dinner could be one of the healthiest meals we eat. Granted you do need to take a little potato portion control into account, but if you roast your potatoes in goose

fat rather than standard veg oil or lard you get the added benefits that those omega 3 fatty acids bring. Just be mindful of the starchy and sweet ingredients. If you try not to overdo those you’re not going to have an impact on your waist line. As a general rule, the more activity/exercise you participate in the more carbs you can allow yourself. And with regards to alcohol, look on the bright side; red wine contains resveratrol, one of the best antioxidants known to man, great for the cardiovascular system. So a glass or two may even do you good. Wishing you a happy and healthy Christmas!

THE VILLAGE

V.EXCITING YEAR FOR VILLAGE BOURNEMOUTH What an exciting year we have had at Village Urban Resort Bournemouth and we have been very lucky to share some of our news with you through The Game magazine. But, there are probably lots of stories you don’t know about. Here’s a taster of what a v.exciting year we’ve had at Village Bournemouth! During August, we were very lucky to welcome the amazing Red Arrows to the hotel, whilst they used Bournemouth Airport as their base for local displays including Bournemouth Air Festival. Not only did they join us on our Family Day but Kayleigh and Chris, a very lucky Bride and Groom were able to get a v.unique wedding photograph with the boys too. Having the Red Arrows stay with us certainly created excitement around the hotel, pub and restaurant and they were more than happy to have photographs taken with patrons or stop for autographs. We hope to welcome them back again in 2015.

We would like to thank you for all your support during 2014; we wish you a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year and look forward to seeing you in 2015!

We also became the official Health Club partners with AFC Bournemouth allowing us the opportunity to support the team with their fitness with swim sessions or working up a sweat in the gym. We have also been lucky to get involved with AFCB Community Sports Trust with two 10 week projects called v.fit families; the first series is currently under way with the next programme being rolled out in spring 2015. The v.fit families project encourages kids to partake in exercise and fun activities that all the family can enjoy together. The project is free and if you are interested, please ask at leisure reception. We enjoyed some great tribute events at the hotel in 2014 including ABBA and Motown nights, if you attended one of these nights, have you checked out our facebook page for the great photographs taken? We have an amazing line up for 2015 too including Take That (if you weren’t successful in getting tickets for their 2015 tour), 50 Shades Ladies Night, Comedy nights and much more… make sure you pick up a ‘What’s On’ Guide or visit our website for full listings.

GOLF

We’re talking to people who are involved with sports across the area to get an insight firsthand about their chosen sport and to find out where and how you can get involved. NAME: MATT WILLIAMS SPORT: GOLF

Hi Matt, tell us a bit about yourself and how you started out playing golf? Well, I’m 19 years old and have been living in Bournemouth for just over a year. Before that, I used to live with family back in Cornwall before taking the choice to move away and take my golf to another level. I have only been playing golf for just over 6 years after passing the entrance to a local golf club regularly. I am currently a PGA Assistant Professional at Dudsbury Golf Club. You have recently turned pro, how did it feel to see all your hard work pay off? The last 6 months, I have seen a great improvement in my ability and consistency within my performance due to having a new coach in Bournemouth who I owe a lot of credit to. To hear him turn round to me and say turning pro through the PGA (Professional Golfers Association) would be a suitable and positive move, made me feel that my ambitions and goals of the last 3 years have finally come together. What does turning pro involve? Through the PGA, there is a lot of initial paperwork to fill out which needs to be posted through to them to scan and assess whether I’d be suitable to be a pro golfer through the worldwide organisation. From there it is a case of either having to do a playing ability test at 1 of 6 nominated courses in the UK on a stipulated date as well as going to the Belfry Golf Club for 2 days to go through taster interviews at the headquarters of the PGA. It doesn’t matter which order you do it although both must be completed. The playing ability test involves playing 2 rounds in 1 day with others going through the same application process. If you shoot a better score than asked for over the 2 rounds you can then proceed to turn professional. The only issue that can hold people back is that each person applying must be working within the pro-shop of a golf club for a minimum of 30 hours a week as well as playing regular competitions to be accepted. Tell us about your training/practise regime? Often I will work full days at the golf club so when I do, I tend to hit a basket of balls on the driving range after each day. On my days off, I will try to play 9 holes at Dudsbury Golf Club where I work which gives me an idea of what my most recent weaknesses are so I can hit the practice ground and work on it. Sometimes if I feel I’m playing pretty well in general, I will try to go and visit another course locally and give myself a change of scenery and a challenge. During the winter, I will go to the gym for some resistance, cardio endurance and muscular strength training to keep myself agile and strong but also healthy enough to play 2 rounds in a day with as little fatigue as possible. Does turning pro involve a lot of travel? It does indeed. I travelled a lot as an amateur to events. Living in Bournemouth is great for the travelling; I can get to most areas of the country to take part in events within 3-4 hours. Back in Cornwall, it took

18

me over an hour just to leave the county. At the beginning of October, I drove to Le Touquet in France for 3 days of golf so I’m already racking up the miles! I intend to play a lot of local Dorset & Wiltshire PGA events as well as the West Region PGA events over the coming months which are never too far away. I am also looking at the national order of merit as well as playing on the Gecko Tour in Spain over the winter with my first event between the 9th, 10th and 11th December at The Marbella Golf and Country Club. All being well, I will be looking to go to Q-School in March for the Euro-Pro Tour to see how I will stand and hopefully qualify for the tour which regularly is broadcast on Sky Sports 4. What is the biggest competition you have played in? I’ve been fortunate to play many well-known competitions so far starting off with playing County Championships which I was fortunate to win at one stage. I played the South West boys Championship as well as the Welsh Championship of the Faldo Series, a number of qualifying tournaments which all contribute to world amateur ranking points held and supported by Sir Nick Faldo himself. My first time playing the event, I came 9th in the under 21s category which wasn’t enough to go to the final in Florida and meet Sir Nick but it gave me a great confidence boost to continue to play the Jamega Pro Tour as an amateur and finish the amateur order of merit 2nd for the season before turning pro in August. How many hours a week would you say you are on a golf course?! Hard to say really. I like to play on the course often as I can practise in tournament situations but at this time of the year, I tend to stick to being on practise areas or practise rounds for competitions. Over the summer months, I would say easily 12-15 hours on the course as well as practise area time between work shifts. If people are interested in trying golf whether they’re an adult or child, what’s the best way to go about taking part and starting out? The easiest way to start is to go to your local golf club and see if they have a driving range to hit some balls and try it out. Every golf club should have a PGA professional available to offer a beginner lesson to teach the basics so you can get an idea of the game, possibly doing so with a friend or family member might help the enjoyment side of trialling the game. At Dudsbury, we pride ourselves for a popular junior coaching session on a Saturday morning between 11.30-12.30, where we regularly have children between the ages of 7-13 turn up and have a fun, enjoyable group coaching learning something new each week and meeting new friends. This is something we hopefully are looking at holding for adults soon. Thanks for your insight into the game; can you sum up what it means to you in three words? Challenging, rewarding, enjoyable.

KITE SURFING

For the last few weeks, the skies along the Dorset coast have been alive with the bright and bold colours of soaring kites. Blasting back and forth, local kitesurfers have been making the most of the early Winter storms and mild Autumn temperatures. or kiters the country over it’s been a great windy season for both beginners and advanced riders alike. Now though, the water temperature continues to drop as January creeps closer and tired wetsuits are beginning to fail chilly riders. It’s no surprise then that passionate kiters are keenly discussing the annual migration to warmer Southern waters, escaping the harsher British winter months and continuing the sport they love overseas.

At Poseidon, a community focused kite school set up by professional rider; Chris Burke, this gloomy winter brings with it an exciting new opportunity to get involved in the kite scene. With a plan to venture to the exclusive spot of El Gouna in Egypt next February, Poseidon will be running a unique kite trip to this warm and windy spot, just a short plane journey away. For more info, head to the Poseidon website www.poseidonkiteschool.com, give them a call or pop down to their base in Poole Harbour for a chat. They’ll be manning the beach when the wind’s blowing, right up until the Christmas frosts.

A collection of manmade lagoons, El Gouna offers idyllic, year round kitting in a shallow warm bay just next door to a bustling apre Kite Town. With such a picturesque backdrop, El Gouna is the perfect destination to throw down tricks or safely establish your first steps into kitesurfing, all the while catching a tan. With a programme of coaching from Poseidon’s team of professional riders, the trip is an excellent opportunity for experienced riders to progress and for keen beginners to get kiting mastered, ready to return and showcase their skills back in the UK once the water has warmed up.

Scanning the world’s trade wind charts and booking a little time off work, a trip abroad to pick up new skills or learn a new sport altogether, is easily justified with the thought of roasting temperatures and endless kitesurfing.

BOXING

Hi Steve, welcome back to The Game, this time, with your management hat on! Tell our readers how you started out with your gyms and what you have to offer… At the time of when I thought I was coming to the end of my fighting career, I thought I needed to think about life after boxing. I set up a small gym in Springbourne and got busy working and building things up and had many people coming to train and raise their fitness levels. From there, I moved to my current bigger venue and from here, I have been building up more classes, new coaches to work with me and build a gym based around boxing but also a gym that is here for anyone to get fit and benefit from the strength training associated with boxing. However good, bad, however much or little you want to do, my gym is somewhere you can come to train and feel safe. Everyone is welcome. I do two classes a week where you can train alongside my pros. You can do the same work as they are doing but you won’t be sparring with them unless you ask me to. So, now with you focussing more on the management side of things, tell us about the work you’re doing to build this… I work with the British Boxing Board of Control as a manager and a trainer and I am now starting to promote as well along with an old friend of mine from the Midlands. I believe in the grassroots of boxing. It is hard to make money as a professional boxer, you need the contract but you’ve got to get the contract and that is what I am trying to work on for my boys. To give them that chance and if they win the fight, they get the contract. White Collar fighting is basically glorified unlicensed fighting. I’m not knocking it as it gives people a chance to give boxing a go but to live the dream and make real money, you need to go through the right process. I am building a stable of fighters that I am working hard with to give them a good chance to get contracts. I’ve lived in Bournemouth for 16 years and there’s never been a pro show in all that time here in the town. I’m giving the boys an opportunity to fight in their home town and

20

put professional boxing on the Bournemouth map. There’s a good following with the White Collar boxing which is great but surely if I can put real fighters on the map, then we can get a good following down here for pro boxing too. Who have you got training with you at the moment? Jake Gosling - Came to me, never fought before in his life. Trained with me for 3 years. He is now pro and 4-0; he’s fighting again this month. Matt Legg – 18 amateur fights, came here because he’s got that little bit of a pro style about him and a bit of swagger tool. He’s now had his first fight 1-0. Joe Hayes – 1-0 He’s had about 20 amateur fights, went pro originally with his old coach and was promoted in London but now with me and doing his second fight this weekend (at time of print). I’m here for people and if they want to give professional boxing a go and see if they’re good enough, we’ll work with them. If they come to my door and I don’t think they’re good enough, I’ll be honest with them. I am totally honest with all my fighters. We help them to learn and adapt and to look a different class. If you’re looking at going pro, 19-23 is a good age depending on your weight. When I think they are ready, I’ll make the call to the British Boxing Board of Control, set the meeting up and if they get the OK from them, they’ll be a professional fighter. Tell us about your coaching… I’ve been coaching in the gym for 7 years and I want people to know what I’m doing here – if there are young guys out there who want go pro and give it a go, they can come to me. I’ll work with them and build their careers until I think they are ready to be let off the leash and take that first fight. If you win the gamble, you get the contract which everyone dreams of. That’s how the boxing game works at this grassroots level. Myself and Chris do all the coaching. Chris is dreaming to compete in the next Olympics. He’s a real connoisseur of the sport and we train the boys together 5 days a week. It is great to have him alongside me working together. His knowledge of the sport is second to none. I know that because he trained me when I was going for the World Title and I’ve

worked with many trainers. I was going to go to Southampton to train with a guy there but I didn’t need to. I’ve got all I need here. How do you promote your fighters? Working with the promoter I use in the Midlands, Errol Johnson, we promote together. With the BBC (British Boxing Board of Control) you need to have the license which he has so we work together to put the shows on. What I am planning is four small shows a year and then do two big shows a year. We’ve got one coming up this month and looking forward to getting the boys out there. Then, we’ve got another one coming up in February and March and we’re looking at venues. Thanks for talking to us Steve; we wish you and the boys the best of luck with your future and look forward to hearing more in 2015.

CHRISTMAS DAY

MAN R O F R E X E H WIT

CE

Just because Christmas is known as a time of eating and drinking too much, doesn’t mean YOU have to put on loads of weight. Here are our simple tips and strategies for maintaining your weight over the Christmas period AND having a good time!

IN THE RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS

FOOD

Eat really healthily between now and Christmas and up your exercise routine too!

Or if you can’t get out – one of our body weight workouts in the garden to get some fresh air whatever the weather. Then enjoy a delicious breakfast.

Here are some ideas: Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon Poached egg with bacon Sausage and egg Kippers and roasted tomatoes Smoked Mackerel with poached egg All these breakfasts are high in omega 3 fats (good fats) too. Avoid toast!

Keep to a routine. Sometimes meal patterns can go to pot and infrequent larger meals become the order of the day – try not to let this happen, graze rather than gorge.

Mid Morning

Try to avoid these deadly Xmas foods: Biscuits, confectionery, sausage rolls, pastries and mince pies. They are nutrition-less foods and provide you with huge amounts of unnecessary calories!

EXERCISE

Schedule the exercise you want to do into your diary Try and exercise every day – for at least 30 minutes if you can. Keeping well hydrated is key. Try and drink at least 2 litres a day. This can be made up of water or hot drinks like green tea or herb infusions. If you’re drinking alcohol then consider upping the quantity of water to 3 litres on these days.

SUPPLEMEN

TS

When you’re enjoying late nights and more parties it’s easy for tiredness to set in and make you more susceptible to coughs, colds and other bugs. Even the best diet in the world is still lacking in key vitamins and minerals so take a good quality multi vitamin and extra Vitamin C too.

A LC O H O L

If you are going to go out and drink then drink lots of water before and afterwards. Try and drink water whilst you’re out too. Light aerobic activity will sweat some of the alcohol out the following day but this ONLY works if you’ve drunk enough water before hand. So if you are going to do some exercise the following morning then make sure you drink lots before you do. When drinking, the best drinks to choose are spirits with a mixer or white wine spritzers. Try and avoid beer, especially lager.

During the morning whilst the Turkey is cooking, have some healthy snacks to hand Raw vegetable crudités – e.g. carrots, celery, peppers to eat with hummus Cottage cheese and blueberries A satsuma with walnuts Nuts that are still in their shells will mean you don’t eat as many! But otherwise, opt for natural raw unsalted nuts.

Lunch It doesn’t all have to eaten in one sitting – consider having a walk after the main course and before pudding! Make the meal last as long as possible rather than bolting it all down – Sky plus and iplayer means you’ll never miss your favourite TV programme! So take time to enjoy your food.

Starter If you haven’t had smoked salmon for breakfast, consider having it now if you want a starter. Serve it with lemon, salt and pepper.

Main course Cook the meat on a rack so that the fat drains off and the meat is not sitting in it. If you can afford it - purchase organic meat.

• Be inspired by excellent food and recipe ideas • Greatly improve the performance of your team with our excellent strength & conditioning programmes If you Want It, together we can Do It, so that you can Be It.

Turkey is perfect because it is lean and high in protein. Eat plenty but avoid eating the skin. Grass fed meats such as beef and lamb are good alternatives. Good Quality sausages such as venison are another source of protein for your Christmas lunch.

Vegetables Breakfast

Eat little and often – this is the golden rule. 3 meals and three 3 snacks evenly spaced throughout the day.

Make sure your intake of carbohydrates is varied – and not confined to wheat. Try and eat them earlier in the day each day. Carb loading at night (particularly after a night out) is a sure fire way to increase your weight without really trying.

20 22

Start the day with a run or cycle ride before you eat anything!

JAMES DAVIES

Eat as much as you like of the following veg: Cabbage, Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli, Cauliflower (steam them to retain all the nutrients) Eat the following veg sparingly: Carrots, Peas, Swede/turnip, Pumpkin, Parsnips, Roast Potatoes (go easy just one or 2 if you must but avoid if you can) Stuffing: eat sparingly, and find a recipe that uses more meat and fruit than bread

Dessert Leave a big gap before dessert – it allows your insulin levels to settle and you won’t over eat. Not over eating means you won’t store fat - SIMPLE. Enjoy some Christmas pudding but leave out the brandy butter – have Greek yoghurt instead

Cheese If you are going to have cheese have another long break beforehand. Eat the cheese with celery, grapes and apples rather than crackers.

Late Night Munchies? Have a turkey sandwich or salad instead of mince pies or biscuits. Make sure you have less bread and more meat – The best bread to have is a pumpernickel or rye bread; it’s OK to have some mayo with your turkey though!

BOXING DAY Go for a run or do some exercise first thing in the morning before you eat! Enjoy the same breakfast as Christmas Day and for lunch enjoy the leftovers with plenty of vegetables and/or salad or cook fish as an alternative. Happy Christmas and Best wishes for the New Year.

BIKRAM

FACT OF THE MONTH: Stretch out your feet

PHOTOGRAPHY: SEAN GARDINER

Welcome to The Yoga Zone, a wellbeing feature in association with Bikram Yoga, Bournemouth. Find out about this popular form of holistic exercise, learn about the benefits and follow the posture of the month. What is Bikram Yoga? Bikram Yoga is the Original “Hot” Yoga using 26 Hatha Yoga postures sequence selected and developed by Bikram Choudhury. The 90 minute class consists of the 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises. It works to strengthen the body and detoxify by stretching, balancing (using gravity), and creating pressure all at the same time. The blood supply in the arteries and veins is restricted, creating pressure. When released, a lock gate effect is created, causing blood to rush through veins and arteries, flushing them out. Pressure is also applied to the heart by its relative position to the rest of the body. Yoga changes the construction of the body from the inside out, from bones to skin and from fingertips to toes. So before you change it, you have to heat it up to soften it, because a warm body is a flexible body. Then you can reshape the body any way you want.

POSTURE OF THE MONTH: Awkward Pose / Utkatasana BENEFITS Improves overall body strength Opens pelvis Strengthens and tones leg muscles Relieves menstrual cramping Reduces fat pocket under buttocks Aligns skeletal system Good for arthritis and gout conditions Good for digestion Relieves joint pain Helps to cure slipped discs and other problems in the lower spine Relieves sciatica Improves flexibility in toes and ankles Exercises liver, intestines, and pancreas Heals chronically cold feet

My name is Sam Cheslyn, I’m 23 and I’ve been practicing Bikram since 2011. I was introduced to the yoga through my own guru, my Dad, who had been practicing for a previous 2 years before me. It had taken me 2 years to get myself finally through the door. I thought, “Why would I want to do yoga, he is probably just going through a mid-life crisis and he wants me to be a part of that. Yoga is for women”. After countless times of him trying to persuade me I finally went along to class. From the very first class I was hooked. I practised most days, before, between and after work. I did just over 250 classes in my first year at my previous home studio. I love everything about it…Happy, clear mind, positive results for my body and a loving community vibe you receive when you walk into any studio. Not like the gym. The thing I love most about the yoga is the mental challenge. The lesson of quieting the mind and just focusing on breath, the rest just follows. I will always love my 26/2. I took myself off to Teacher Training and have not looked back! So far, I have taught in Los Angeles, Arizona, Leicester, Liverpool, Glasgow and of course Bournemouth. I absolutely love teaching at Bikram Yoga Bournemouth! Excellent community with a growing number of strong practiced regulars. I think we are very lucky to have such a clean, quiet, large sized studio to practice in with teachers who really care. What more could one ask for from the yoga? Friendly students with loving staff. Big up BYB and all that come. Sam Chesyln Bikram Teacher, Bournemouth

Did you know how important it is to stretch out your feet? Why? The answer is simple – BALANCE. Balance gives us the ability to stand steadily on our two feet, which will then support our whole body structure. Preventing several causes of foot pain and giving us quicker, healthier movement. Without this stable support we are more likely to have postural problems such as back ache as well as running the risk of twisted ankles and increasing the chance in later life of falling over, which can be a tremendous shock to the system. With our toes spread and the big toe in particular brought back into alignment, the arch lifts, the ankle lifts, this will then support the knees, the pelvis, the spine, the neck and the head. In short, our whole structure is supported and lifted as opposed to collapsing downwards. The average person spends half of the working day on their feet. This is why it is so important to take good care of our lovely trotters. Toes need to be able to move through a full range up and down, and independently from each other. Feet are not just blocks to clomp around on. Muscles can become stiff and painful if you stand or walk all day. Reduce the need to stretch them back to health in the first place.

Chill out venue of the month The Larder House is home comfort at its best. Enjoy a lazy morning with the papers and hot coffee and take some time out to chill. Their lunch and dinner menus are a big temptation… treat yourself. Chill out track of the month Great vocals and relaxing melody – Jessie Ware ‘Wildest Moments’.

JAMIE REDKNAPP

PHOTOGRAPHY: AMY MAIDMENT

Thanks for a talking to us Jamie, how are you and what brings you to Bournemouth? I’m very well, thank you. My little boys had a game with the Bournemouth Academy today (at time of interview) and it’s nice to come down to see my parents. I don’t come down enough to be honest but whenever I do, I enjoy it. My brother’s boys are here and we like to meet up with the family and come here (Burger Shop, Bournemouth) for a bite to eat. It’s nice to see mum and dad. We know you grew up on the south coast but do you manage to get back down here often? I don’t get down here nearly often enough. I don’t get that much of a chance with my work and predominately the weekend commitments make it a bit more difficult. I always felt that I would come back and live here but now that I’ve been away and live in London, I can’t see myself living back here for a while. Maybe in the future, who knows? I enjoy being in London and the kids are happy at school and we’ve got good friends up there but I do love coming back down here. There’s so many elements that I love here like coming down for a game of golf with my dad. I find it very therapeutic coming back here it’s a very relaxed way of life. You started your professional career here at AFC Bournemouth, playing under your dad, how was that? It was very special when I think back. I didn’t do it for very long because I signed for Liverpool when I was 17 but I treasure those moments. I was looking at a few pictures today at Bournemouth and it was quite weird to be there watching my kid playing in the kit; it was quite surreal. I was thinking that it was just like me back then. It was a great experience but then I signed for Liverpool so things happened quite quickly from there but I do look back at those times and feel very proud. It’s great to see the team doing so well with Eddie Howe. He reminds me a little bit of my dad when he was a manager at Bournemouth…both very similar, very ambitious, young, very level and got a lot about them. He’s probably not quite so highly strung as my dad was at times! They’ve obviously got incredible talent at what they do. You spent a couple of seasons here before moving on to Liverpool still as a teenager, which must’ve been quite daunting? Looking back, I was quite brave really. I was a Bournemouth boy and I do think that being down here, you have a relaxed way of life and it’s very easy to get sucked into the beach life. All my friends and my brother used to hang around and go out to all the clubs in Bournemouth. Although I used to love coming down and having a night out with my mates, I had my job to do and had to keep focused. You played under quite a few different managers throughout your career at both club and international level, including your dad, but who was the best manager you played for? I did enjoy working with Dad, he was great. Kenny Dalglish signed me. Graeme Souness gave me my debut. I really enjoyed playing for England under Terry Venables - he was great tactically and a nice guy as well. I try to take little bits of all of them really. I wouldn’t say that there was any one in particular. I did enjoy working with my dad. There would be something he would say or a look that made me just know I needed to do more or I was doing great. I would put dad up there with the best and I wish I had been with him for a sustained spell in the Premier League. You’ve also played with some incredible players, who was the best you’ve played with? I’d probably say Gascoigne and John Barnes. McManaman and Fowler; they were geniuses as well. I played with Beckham, Scholes, I was lucky to play with some of the best players in that era when I played with England. …and against? Zidane - he was very hard to get close to, he was such a talent. I swapped shirts with him; I think that was the closest I got to him!

You played in over 400 games for club and country, but what is the most memorable game you have ever played in and why? I’d have to say there were two. My England debut and my first game as captain of Liverpool were probably my two favourite games. To start at Liverpool as a 17 year old and then go on to captain the club is something that you couldn’t make up. It’s something you can only dream of. To play for my country with my mum and dad, nan and granddad and my brother, Mark in the crowd all singing the national anthem - even thinking about it now makes my hair stand on end. They’re special moments that you don’t think when you’re practising in the garden as a 9 year old, will ever happen to you. They were very proud moments. Since retiring from playing, you have become a renowned face in punditry. How does this compare to playing? Yeah, it’s a bit different! You do get that buzz but it’s nothing like playing. I do really enjoy it. You get the goose bumps and when there’s a big game, you want to make sure you come across alright. I do get a bit nervous! It’s a great job and I love going to all the places like the Bernabeu for a Champions League game or for a Premier League game at Anfield, it’s great and I always enjoy it. Do you always keep an eye out for certain scores when you are in the studio?! I’d say all my old clubs really. First of all, it’s my Dads team and then it’s Liverpool and Bournemouth not in any particular order. I just look out for my old teams. I was at Liverpool for 11 years and obviously Bournemouth is a club close to my heart. You’re also a captain on the sports show ‘A League of Their Own’. Do you have as much fun making it as it appears you do?! Yeah, it’s great fun. When I got asked to do it, I was a bit hesitant and my wife said to just go for it and try one series and see how it goes. Then the next thing, we win a BAFTA! Well, when I say I won a BAFTA, my wife says it wasn’t just you! It was Jack Whitehall and the whole team who won it… I’m proud to be part of it. There are not many footballers who can say they came out of football and considering I’m not that funny, then we went and won a BAFTA! You must’ve made a few mates in the game over your career, who are your best mates in football? I get on well with Steve McManaman, I speak to Robbie Fowler and I keep in touch with a few of my old teammates. So, other than TV nowadays, we know you’re a keen golfer, what handicap are you playing off of at the moment? I’ve just gone up from 3 to 4. I love golf. I miss that thrill from playing football but when I go and play with my friends, I love it. I think I’ve found my level. I enjoy playing with my kids and my dad; it’s a great social game. What are your sports plans for the future? Just to do what I’m doing really. I go and watch QPR train on a regular basis. I’m very lucky. I always look back and think that since I retired, things could have gone down such a different path but I’ve made some good decisions and I enjoy every minute of it.

QUIC K FIRE • What team do you support? Whoever my dad is managing! • What would you be if you weren’t a footballer? I think I would have been a cabby! • Best stadium you’ve ever played at? Wembley • What’s the best goal you ever scored? My England goal against Belgium when we won 2-1 – with my left foot! • Any pre-match superstitions? Too many stupid superstitions! • Biggest joker you’ve played with? Paul Gascoigne

Q’s

•B est football song/chant you’ve had sung about you? “He’s got a lovely wife, he’s got a lovely wife, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Redknapp, he’s got a lovely wife!” By the Spurs fans. When you’re in Bournemouth, where are your favourite places to: Eat: It’s got to be here…Burger Shop. Chill: My mum’s kitchen with a bacon sandwich! Party: I just like coming out for something to eat; the music is great in here!

Thank you for your time Jamie and we wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas.

CONSERVATION

CHRISTMAS WITH A CONSCIENCE

GET INVOLVED WITH A LOCAL BEACH CLEAN TO HELP RID OUR SHORES OF ALL THE RUBBISH THAT IS WASHED UP.

WITH STEVE TREWHELLA We welcome back Steve Trewhella, local marine life expert, conservationist and professional marine wildlife photographer, to find out more about the campaigns he is working on in the plight to clean up our coastline and get some tips on how to have a more eco-friendly Christmas this year.

TOP TIPS FOR A THOUGHTFUL CHRISTMAS Make a gift this year. It’s personal and will be valued highly as you’ve gone to the trouble to make it rather than buying ten of the same thing to give out to friends and family. Use driftwood or other things you find on the beach and you’ll have a gift with thought and meaning.

and see and learn. We all feel guilty putting kids in front of the TV or letting them play on game machines too long. Take your kids out. Go out into the woods. Get muddy and go back to your childhood. There are some things you can’t buy and the enjoyment and memories will be remembered a lot longer than another toy.

Experiences Buying a wildlife experience such as whale watching or dolphin watching is the best thing you can get for someone who into wildlife. Be careful about the adoptions; you wonder how much actually goes towards the animal and it’s not about protecting one thing, it’s protecting where the animal lives as well as the animal. The experiences are commercial but you’re paying for the privilege to see incredible animals in their own habitat which is something quite rare and special to see. Good operators are very strict with how close they get to wildlife. Look for an accredited organisation such as Marine Discovery in Penzance run by Duncan and Hannah - http://www.marinediscovery. co.uk/ They use a catamaran so it’s much quieter. RIBs are effective but they are quite noisy and can disturb the animals. Take in the elements, enjoy the sea air...if you see some dolphins on top of that, it’s a huge bonus and incredible to see. These can be life changing experiences to see animals that you may not ever see again. People should avoid visiting any attractions that keep captive marine mammals such as Dolphins and Killer Whales. Many may fly the ‘conservation’ flag but it is a smoke screen to keep people coming through the gates. They belong in the Ocean and do not like jumping through hoops and towing paying customers around.

Build a pond. This really is a simple thing to do which will create hours of enjoyment. Just a metre squared is enough to sustain wildlife. The children will love it and be overwhelmed with excitement when they see what is living there. For about ten pounds, you can get some liner, dig a small hole, chuck in some logs and you’ll make a habitat which will thrive. The pond will attract dragonflies and many other invertebrates which kids can watch evolve.

Wildlife on your doorstep. We’re so lucky to have the beach, countryside and forest in easy reach. You don’t need to buy an expensive RIB ride - Rock pool Rambles and Birdwatching events are in plenty in the area. Spend your money on something that will remain with your loved one long after the plastic toy ends up in the bin or the pair of socks gets worn out.. Nature kits for kids are great to get children interested in the wildlife around them – binoculars, magnifying glasses, pots, insect boxes and bee boxes, things you can put in the garden to watch insects are perfect for kids to go out

A Try Dive is a great present, all done in the safety of a pool. A few local dive operators running them www.underwaterexplorers. co.uk and http://flippas-n-fins.uk/ are worth contacting. They are a great way of introducing people, young and old to the underwater world. Books about nature are great to get kids involved.. Read about animals and insects and use the book as a good tool to identify the things they find.

We are running out of holes in the ground to fill with rubbish so where you can, maybe think about factors that can help the environment. Try buying from local industries, opt for a slightly more earthy or ethical gift. Look for cosmetics and fragrances that aren’t animal tested. Making small commitments at a very commercial time of the year can help if we all do it – check online for plenty of websites that will give you a list of which labels test. Seafood at Christmas – try and buy from a low impact fishery. Unfortunately, buying locally doesn’t always mean it has a low impact. By low impact, we mean sustainably caught fish and not trawler caught. There are guides readily available online of where to buy your fish and the fish to avoid. We are hoovering them up and there simply isn’t enough fish left. The more people buy low impact, the longer our fish supplies will last. New Year start your new year with a slightly different attitude towards the world, our area and

“WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF HOLES IN THE GROUND TO FILL WITH RUBBISH SO WHERE YOU CAN, MAYBE THINK ABOUT FACTORS THAT CAN HELP THE ENVIRONMENT.”

Beachcombing is a great experience to take in our World Heritage site which we have along the coast. We have so much with fabulous beaches and kids love to find things to collect. Fossils which are 250 million years old are often found and kids love to take it into school to show their friends and teachers. Make a poor man’s weather glass with some kelp from the beach. Hang it in your porch and when it’s going to rain, it will be supple and when it’s crispy, it’ll be dry. Kids love to run down in the morning to see what the weather will be like. Rubbish It’s impossible to buy presents without creating rubbish and your kids come first but Christmas is definitely a time of the year where we need to think a little bit more about our own waste. If a toy happens to come in a compressed vacuum plastic with cables ties, there isn’t a massive amount you can do.

the wildlife. Experience the incredible place we live in. The best things cost nothing. The activities your children will remember are the days on the beach, the rock pooling, making a camp in the woods. These experiences will far out live the toys that will be forgotten and they will be remembered and hopefully shared with their own children one day. Steve’s images are available as prints and he is available for talks and presentations on local marine and coastal wildlife. www.ukcoastalwildlife.co.uk SteveTrewhella1 SteveTrewhellaUKCOASTALWILDLIFE

FOOT GOLF Hi Jo, have you come down from your high following the PierZip experience last month? Yes, it really was so good. You’ve got to try it out. I’ve bought a couple as presents for some friends and hoping to tag along with them for another go! For people who prefer experience styyle gifts, I would highly recommend them trying out the PierZip.

AFTER

MISSION NO. 26 FOOT GOLF AT PLAYGOLF BOURNEMOUTH Last month Jo tried the awesome PierZip at the end of Bournemouth Pier and thoroughly enjoyed the adrenaline fuelled ride down to the beach. This month, she was joined by The Game’s Sales Executive, Harry Lund to have a go at Foot Golf at Playgolf Bournemouth. On a chilly late November morning, they met for a fun and festive round on the 9 hole course to report back about their experience .

That looked like a lot of fun! How was it? J: That was really good! It was lovely to be out on the course on a beautiful morning and I don’t think I was too bad…Harry?! H: Not too bad at all, Jo, honest! It was great fun! I can see this being a great activity to do as a group before/after watching or playing football. It’s guaranteed to bring out your competitive side if you’re with some mates. We saw some good kicks out there, Harry’s perhaps a little better than Jo’s but it looked like you were keeping up OK, Jo? J: Harry was by far a LOT better at kicking the ball than me, I need to get practising! Gladly, what you didn’t see on the camera was when I almost slipped and ended up in the mud! H: That was a close one, but gracefully avoided! Even if you’re not a regular footballer, you can still have great fun out on the course, as Jo proved! …and we could see a little competition going on there! How did you score? H: A few pars and a couple of birdies on the scorecard, I’m pretty pleased with that! J: Um, yeah…what he said!

30

This month we’re going for fun but a little less high octane than last month! You’re teaming up with Harry to try out the Foot Golf course at Playgolf Bournemouth. Have you played golf or football before?! J: I’ve done a few bucket of balls at the driving range but never played. Football… well, I love watching it but not played since I was at school! H: I play a bit of both and loved the combination of the two. It’s a great challenge that puts your passing to the test. I’d love to see how a professional would get on!

What were the facilities like? J: Excellent. It’s stunning out there and the course was great. The staff were really friendly too. H: The facilities are great. The course was in a good condition considering the recent wet weather. If we’d had more time, I’d have loved to have stayed for a drink and something to eat in The Kitchen Club on-site restaurant. Who can play, is it open to anyone? J: Yes, the staff said lots of families come and enjoy this activity as its good fun and not too serious. I’m definitely going to take my kids down to have a go. H: Absolutely, I know plenty of people who aren’t usually interested in football who are really keen to give Footgolf a go. It doesn’t matter about your age, ability or anything; it’s well worth a try! Thank you to Playgolf Bournemouth. Look out next month for another ‘Have a go hero’ challenge. We also love to work locally to support the Dorset area and have even to been lucky enough to work with HUSH hair and beauty salon who appeared in The Game magazine back in October. After making the decision they came to Ascesis, to see how we could help their search engine ranking. WINDSURFING

The Game talks to Timo Mullen local pro windsurfer about the thriving windsurfing scene on the south coast. Name Timo Mullen Sponsors Starboard, Severne Sails, Mystic Wetsuits

36

Thanks for talking to us, Timo...what got you into windsurfing and how long have you been doing it? I’ve been windsurfing since I was 6 years old, my dad was one of the first windsurfers in Ireland, I have always lived by the sea so it has always felt natural to be windsurfing! When did you start windsurfing in waves and what attracted you to it? My parents took myself and my brother to a beach in the very NW of Ireland when I was 14, that was my first real introduction to waves and I’ve never looked back, that same beach is still my favourite beach in the world and the spot I have probably ridden my biggest waves.

PHOTOGRAPHY: PETE HAZELL

You are a former UK Freestyle Champion, was this the highlight of your big wins and do you have anything coming up that you’re training for? Hi Rob, thanks for talking to us about your sport. Tell us a bit about you and your disability… I’m 36 years old; I’m married to my wife, Carla. We have two children; Harry is 4 and Ollie is 8. I’ve been disabled since Feb 2014 following a bone tumour. Are you part of a team and where do you usually play? Yes, I play for three darts teams – Monday’s, I play for The Ambassador, Thursday’s the Wallisdown Liberal Club and I also play Superleague for Wallisdown. You were recently selected to play in a World Darts event, tell us about that selection process and how did you get on? I was emailed asking if I would be interested in taking part in the first WINMAU World Disability Masters in Hull and of course, I jumped at the chance but I couldn’t afford to get myself there or pay for accommodation. I decided to email a local darts company and Paul at THE DARTS PERFORMANCE CENTRE said they would sponsor me. I was shocked – as far as I knew, I was the first sponsored disabled darts player. The Darts Performance Centre have since said they will continue to sponsor me and now WINMAU have sponsored me as well. Are you involved with any other sports? Yes, I play disability cricket, I’m the Dorset Disabled County Cricket Club captain and I

SPORT: DISABLED DARTS have also been capped twice for the England disability team. I’ve been selected to play at Lords in March 2015. Do disabled and able-bodied players ever play together? Darts is a game for all so no matter what your disability is, there is no reason why anyone can’t play darts. What are your plans to get more people involved and how can they get in touch? Since playing in the World Masters, I’ve been made the UK rep for the WDDA (World Disability Darts Association) The founder, Russ Strobel, lives in Australia and he needed someone to help run things in the UK. It was an honour when he chose me to do it. Darts is all about inclusion and Russ has invented a dart frame called the Wildfire 137 which on one side is a regular height dart board but if you spin it around, there’s a board at the height of 137cm which is the perfect height for a wheelchair based player. The WDDA have been recognised by the World Dart Federation and the BDO and WINMAU. We are in talks with many people regarding competitions and the support for the WDDA has been massive with disabled players as well as able bodied players fully supporting us. Thanks for telling us about your sport and we wish you lots more success for the future.

The BMW X6 combines the solid stance of an X model with the athleticism of a coupé. The commanding front contains striking air inlets that provide an indication of the power behind them. The large, sporty, double kidney-shaped grille underlines this athletic presence, with an added air of supremacy provided by the double headlights and the fog lights, which are positioned wide on the vehicle’s exterior. When viewed from the side, the sporty, coupé-like silhouette comes to prominence, optically framed by the premium chrome surrounds of the windows. The unmistakeable crease line extends from the powerfully shaped wheel front wheel housing to the rear door handles, and then elegantly tapers off towards the rear. The dynamic nature of the BMW X6 is even more prominent across the impressively wide rear, where horizontal lines characterise the solid stance. The BMW X6 is ready to leave all limits behind. Clear structures. Exclusive sportiness. High-quality craftsmanship. The interior of the BMW X6 is carefully thought through, right down to the last detail. In typical BMW style, the cockpit is fully orientated towards the driver, who enjoys an excellent overview thanks to the elevated seating position. The sporty shape of the seats guarantees optimum stability, even on the most challenging journeys. The coupé-like silhouette and all-encompassing interior contours ensure that vehicle occupants feel comfortable at all times. FLETCH’S PREDICTIONS It’s a very busy month ahead with the Christmas fixtures and the Capital One match at home against Liverpool…what are your thoughts ahead of this month’s fixtures? Wolves v AFCB – Wolves have done very well and I believe they will be in the top 10 of the division pushing to get into the playoffs. It will be a tough fixture but in the form we’re in, I think we can go there and pull off a result. AFCB v Cardiff – Cardiff are straight out of the Premiership last season with a new manager in charge who has turned things round. They have some very good players but on home soil, I think we can come out with 3 points.

ASK FLETCH

AFCB v Liverpool (Capital One Cup) – It’s a dream to get into the semi-finals and why not? Blackpool v AFCB – A long trip away to a team not sat in a pretty position but that means nothing in the Championship. They’ll be fighting for their lives and it will be a tough a game as any, but if we’re at our best, we’ll come out with a win. AFCB v Fulham – They were in the Premiership for many years and came down last season. Some good new players

coming through but still very experienced players which won’t make it an easy fixture but hopefully we’ll get the victory. Millwall v AFCB – A tough place to go, Millwall and can be intimidating no matter how well they are playing. It’s a hard place to get a result; we played there at the end of last season and we’ll be looking for revenge. A point will be a good point but I think we’re more than capable of coming away with all 3.

#ASK FLETCH Question of the month

From @jamesboobier via Twitter: Lynn (Fletch’s wife) is a bit of a master chef, what’s your favourite dish she cooks up? Every Monday when my wife does the shop, she always asks us what we want to eat this week and it often ends up with us all arguing! She’s always looking for different ideas but my favourites are pasta dishes and stir fries. We are going traditional this Christmas with turkey. I’m not one to pile 25 different vegetables on my plate and then you get down three layers and you realise you’ve got a veg you’ve never seen before! It will be the nice and simple with 4 or 5 veg, roast potatoes and turkey with the trimmings. From @Robmatlee Fletch, do you feel that you could have done one season in the Championship with us last season? My heart said yes but my head said no. It’s the one thing that goes around in my mind; could I have done it? I had to be a realist. I was 2 months off my 41st birthday, I was the oldest footballer in all the leagues, my knees were shot and as much as my heart wanted to play and playing in the Championship was one thing that was missing out of all my achievements, I had to make that decision and it hurt a lot to discuss not playing again with the manager. I had other opportunities to play with other teams but my heart wanted to stay at Bournemouth and I didn’t want the opportunity of being Head of Recruitment to pass me by. I look at the longevity of my job now against playing one more season at another club that I have no affiliation with. That was the deciding factor - I wanted to stay at AFC Bournemouth.
