BRIGHT START AS TAPES RISE ON 2015 THE POOLE READYPOWER PIRATES MADE AN IMPRESSIVE START TO THE NEW SPEEDWAY CAMPAIGN AS THEY ROARED INTO ACTION AT POOLE STADIUM LAST MONTH. he Poole men powered straight to the top of the Elite League netting a remarkable 100% record from their first three official matches including some impressive performances on the road. Away wins are crucial if Pirates are to capture a third consecutive championship title. They bagged a pair of big wins on their travels to the homes of two arch rivals, King’s Lynn and Coventry, to kick start their title defence. However, it was a subdued night at Wimborne Road for Pirates’ fourth encounter as the Coventry Bees licked their wounds and bounced back just days later. They produced a sting in the tail days that ultimately cost the Pirates their home record, as they dealt a crushing defeat on a night when few things went right for the boys in blue. Pirates’ boss Matt Ford was taking nothing for granted though, despite occupying the top slot. “It’s a long season ahead and there are always many twists and turns to come, usually when you least expect them and we know that to be true already. In speedway, so much depends on lady luck and how favourably she looks down on you. The bookmakers have again placed us as favourites for the Elite title and we are all rightly bullish about our prospects, especially in the light of our opening three matches. However I can barely believe that we have already managed to suffer four injuries to key men in the opening weeks. Thankfully, Chris Holder and Kyle Newman have returned to racing after taking early knocks. It didn’t affect us too badly and we were still able to pull out the stops and win. But I’m afraid we were not so lucky with our talisman Davey Watt who has been side-lined for several weeks after a crash in Poland.

04

Davey had really worked hard during the winter and was in great shape coming into the season. It’s a crying shame that all that effort has been thwarted by a nasty ankle and foot injury that has left his strict winter regime in ruins. Then we were without our Captain against Coventry at home. Losing Maciej Janowski was a bitter blow as he has been a stalwart since joining the side two years ago. He has missed fewer meetings than just about any other rider and it is a big loss when he is not there. I am pleased to report that he is back on track now and looking forward to returning to the fold having missed just the one fixture.”

Meanwhile, for the 23 year old Aussie, North, the Poole experience has been good too. He has grabbed the fans attention with some blistering performances and has earned a reputation as a rider who just never gives up. He clearly is on a mission to catch the attention of The Australian National team and has put himself in the shop window with some big scores even after having to fill the boots of a third heat leader due to the injury to Davey Watt. Covering for Watt allows the return of 2014 Pirate Josh Graczonek and Ford was delighted to welcome him back saying. “It’s always great when a rider is keen to don the skull and crossbones and Josh made it clear that he was only too pleased to return. I know he will do a fine job just as he did on our way to the title last year.” In summing up the early season form the Pirates’ supremo is very proud of what has already been achieved. “Apart from that one blip against the Bees, we have made an almost perfect start. We certainly have shown that we have nothing to fear and, as always, you can rely on the fact that we will leave no stone unturned in our bid for victory and yet more silverware.” That ethos has propelled the pirates to more Elite titles than any other club. making them the most successful club of the Milennium. It is an ethos that everyone connected with the club is hoping will help them succeed again, come October when the playoffs take place.

Despite the inevitable injury setbacks that are a hazard of top flight speedway, the Pirates have already shown why the they are the bookies’ favourites. In the new signings of Kacper Gomolski and Dakota North, Ford has struck gold once again. Whilst 22 year old Gomolski is the youngest member of the side joining with an average of less than four points a match, a legacy of his previous UK career with Swindon, he is a much improved rider. He has finished third and second respectively in the World Under 21 standings for the last two years and has already scored around twice his starting average as he settles in to life with the Pirates.

NEW FOREST WATER PARK

Just 20 months ago, New Forest Water Park launched their state of the art Rixen cable wakeboard system which has proved to be a huge hit but this May they expect to create an even bigger splash when they launch the mainland UK’s first Wibit Sports Park. Similar to the assault course used on ‘Total Wipeout’, Wibit consists of interlocking sections providing endless on-water activities from the likes of slides, trampolines and even a climbing ice tower.

NEW FOREST AQUA PARK IS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE UK

The inflatable, interlocking modules will provide New Forest Water Park with a floating playground of fun, entertainment and fitness to participants aged from 6 to 66. The installation took place in April and the German designed and engineered equipment will undergo rigorous safety procedures before opening to the general public on Saturday, 2nd May 2015. The Park’s owner Mark Jury enthuses “We couldn’t be more delighted about this new addition to the Park. The response has been phenomenal as just after posting the news on Facebook, we reached 10,000 likes”. There are over 400 Aqua Parks across 60 countries but the New Forest Aqua Park is the first of its kind in the UK. Boasting 40m x 32m of inflatable madness, the Aqua Park is suited to those aged 6+ and over 110cms in height. Bounce off the trampolines, jump off the ice tower, launch friends off of the blobs and climb your way up the overhang. From stag and hen parties, to corporate events and families, there’s something for everyone to play on. Sessions will run on the hour, costing £15 per person. Larger groups have the option of booking the park exclusively for up to 60 people per hour at £600 (effectively £10 per person). Throughout July and August the Aqua Park will be open 7 days a week from 10am until 8pm. For full opening times please visit

RUGBY

POSITIVE END TO THE SEASON FOR THE LIONS The final day of the season for Bournemouth RFC 1st XV was a spectacle of rugby. Not for the scintillating 59 - 14 victory to finish the day, but for the different age groups that joined in the family day. There were games on all pitches from U6 to U15. The U7’s hosted a team from Hornets, a team the 1st XV are familiar with this season as adversaries in National 3. The coaches from the two teams were led by Stuart Gallacher for a joint session of tag rugby focussing on the core values of rugby; teamwork, respect, enjoyment and discipline with sportsmanship. Stuart has a great way of captivating the players creating a fun and nurturing environment for them to Learn. They enjoyed various games like stuck in the mud to get warmed up and get to know each other, building up to a number of tag games. At this age there’s no contact, players take tags off another player to simulate a tackle. This enables young players to get involved and develop their skills at a young age to enjoy the benefits of rugby, without playing a contact sport. Their session finished with runs through a bouncy castle assault course with order in the line just about kept by Stuart. Later the players created a guard of honour to clap the 1XV on to the pitch. The 1st XV should be proud of their final performance this season. They demonstrated a

great running rugby style created by the hard work of the forwards. Bournemouth dominated the game throughout and even playing into a strong head wind controlled possession and territory in the first half. In the second half Bournemouth started to rack up their points with great performances from Wyn Roberts, Alan Manning, Joe Rees and Jack Hennings. The players will finish the season with a few celebrations and a well deserved rest. They’ll be working on maintaining their fitness and maybe a few extra gym sessions. The coaches have started plans for pre-season and will work with the players on developing the playing style and coaching sessions that best suit the team. We want to extend our grateful thanks to all of the unsung heroes behind the scenes who do so much to keep Bournemouth Rugby Club going and provide an environment for young people to excel at rugby, moving on up to the senior levels. Coaches, team managers, treasurer, registrar, tournament coordinator, chairman, shop staff and water boys, all give freely of their time and energy and we couldn’t be where we are today without them, if you feel you can commit to even a few hours a month to volunteer within this great club we would love to have you. Just get in touch.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY We have our casino night on 3rd May at the Marriott Hotel at just £20 a head with buffet. Our players end of season Awards Dinner is on 15th May at Chapel Gate ending with our AGM on May 19th at Chapel Gate 7pm.

SPORTING STARS AWARD WINNING POWER LIFTING AND ROWING CHAMPIONS ‘OARSOME’ FOURSOME SCOOP NATIONAL ROWING GOLD THE OARSOME FOURSOME. The National Indoor Junior sprint relay champions (from left to right Nathan Prowles, Dominik Bihari, Tom Cave and seated front Omar Ibrahim).

POWER DUO POWER DUO. LeAF Studio students Lucy Rayner (left) and Charlie Chester (right) powered their way to medal winning performances at the European Powerlifting Championships. Two LeAF Studio students have powered their way onto the international powerlifting scene. Teenage sensations Lucy Rayner and Charlie Chester have come home to Bournemouth with a clutch of gold, silver and bronze medals after making their international debuts in the European Powerlifting Championships. In their first competition abroad, the girls did Great Britain proud with both of them finishing third overall. They also picked up a gold, two silvers and another bronze in bench press, squat and dead lift during the week-long championships, which were held in the Czech Republic. Lucy, 17, said: “The experience was quite scary as it was our first international and we were competing against some of the best athletes in Europe. It was great to do so well and represent our country.”

10

For Charlie, it was also her first time competing in the Under 23s – so at just 19, she was one of the youngest competitors in her categories. “It was daunting competing against some much older and bigger competitors, so I was really pleased with my results,” Charlie said. “There was one Russian girl the same age as me who was really good so I shall look forward to coming up against her for the next four years!” Lucy and Charlie are both studying for their A-levels at LeAF Studio, where they not only do their day to day academic studies, but they also receive top sport, conditioning and nutrition coaching. Charlie will be sitting her A-levels this summer and with the help of her teachers is able to juggle these with her pressing competition schedule. The next goal for the girls, who are both British Champions, will now be the World Championships, which take place in Finland this June.

“WE ARE INCREDIBLY PROUD OF THE GIRLS’ FANTASTIC ACHIEVEMENT AT THE EUROPEAN POWERLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS. TO COME HOME WITH SUCH GREAT RESULTS IN THEIR FIRST EVER INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION IS TESTAMENT TO THEIR HUGE TALENT AND THE DEDICATION TO THEIR SPORT.” GILL BLANSHARD EXECUTIVE PRINCIPAL OF THE LEAF STUDIO

An ‘oarsome’ foursome team of Bournemouth students have been crowned National Junior Indoor Rowing champions. The talented team from Harewood College - Omar Ibrahim, Tom Cave, Dominik Bihari and Nathan Prowles - beat rowers from across the UK to grab gold in the 2,000 metre sprint relay race.

thanks to some slick changeovers and powerful rowing. Onlookers from the Cambridge University Boat Race crew gathered around the Harewood boys as their lead continued to extend.

They were among 2,700 young athletes competing in the championships at the Lea Valley Athletics Centre in London – making it the world’s biggest indoor rowing event. In their quest for glory all athletes were also supported by the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race squads who took time out from their busy schedule to support the youngsters.

The Year 9 boys then powered their way to a championship record of 6 minutes and 19.6 seconds – more than 30 seconds ahead of the second placed team.

The Harewood indoor rowing coach, Paul Sawyer, said: “The boys have been training for this event since late January and decided to focus on the team event rather than individual races. Their dedication has been immense and no stone was left unturned in their quest for the national title.” The boys, who are all current National Schools League champions, took command of the race right from the start. Omar Ibrahim opened up a healthy lead in the first 100 metres which stretched further

Also taking part in the same race was a team of Year 8 boys from Harewood - Bradley Weller, Reiss White, Sam Hassell and Reuben Tyler-Wilkinson – who finished an impressive seventh in a field of mainly older competitors.

“WE ARE VERY PROUD OF ALL THE BOYS WHO PARTICIPATED IN LONDON. I AM ESPECIALLY PLEASED FOR THE RELAY TEAM WHO HAVE WORKED SO HARD TO BRING A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP BACK TO HAREWOOD COLLEGE”. DEBBIE GODFREY-PHAURE EXECUTIVE HEADTEACHER HAREWOOD COLLEGE

MEET THE PRO

SASHA CORBIN

THIS MONTH WE’RE SPEAKING TO CAPTAIN OF THE HERTFORDSHIRE MAVERICKS AND ENGLAND NETBALL PLAYER, SASHA CORBIN. REPRESENTING ENGLAND ON THE COURT AND LEADING HER RECENTLY RANKED NO. 2 SUPERLEAGUE TEAM, WE CHAT TO SASHA ABOUT HER TRAINING, HER THOUGHTS AHEAD OF THE NETBALL WORLD CUP, HER WORK OFF THE COURT AND TO GET HER VIEWS ON THIS MONTH’S 8TH BOURNEMOUTH 7S FESTIVAL. Hi Sasha, thanks for talking to us, can you tell us how you first got into netball? I started playing at secondary school. My first PE lesson was netball so that was my introduction to the sport. I used to watch my mum play when I was young but never really got involved as I was a gymnast so it was literally when I got to secondary school.

12

You play for and captain the Hertfordshire Mavericks and have over 46 international caps for England so you must have quite a busy schedule? Yes! It varies depending on our schedule and whether we are in camp or not but it’s around 21 or 25 hours every week. I’m currently England Netball Ambassador so I do a lot promoting of the sport and travel around the country to spread the word. I have to try and do all my training around that so generally, I’m training really early in the mornings and then we all come together as a team in the evening to train. It must be a huge honour to represent your country doing the sport you love; can you describe how it feels when you’re playing for England? Literally like you’ve just said, it’s a massive honour. Every single time I get called up or given the opportunity to play, I get

tingles and when you’re out playing, it’s the crowds that give me that extra buzz. I absolutely love it and that’s probably one of the reasons that I keep playing because I want to represent at the highest level and be the best I can be. It is an amazing feeling and makes me very happy. The Netball World Cup is in August this year in Sydney, how do you feel we’ll get on? After having a disappointing Commonwealth Games, I think it’s all going to be about the process and planning and not necessarily thinking about the end goal because if we do everything that we’re supposed to do in the lead up, I think we’ll get the results we desire. I think that’s the approach we’ll take. Who are the teams to look out for? I actually think there are a few teams to look out for. Australia and New Zealand are your natural ones; they always seem to make the finals and are number 1 and 2 in the world. Jamaica, having recently beaten us in January, would have had a massive confidence boost so I wouldn’t write them off at all. Then South Africa and Malawi are amazing African nations who seem to be getting stronger and stronger each year so I would put all of them up there. …and in 2019, the World Cup is being hosted by England, what difference will a home advantage make? The way that netball is right now and the amount of coverage and exposure we’re getting, to have it in this country would have a massive boost. I feel like if the whole nation is behind us and everyone comes to Liverpool to support, it should be a very successful World Cup. Having it in your back garden is the biggest advantage you can get.

Are you aiming to play? I would love to! If everything goes right, I’ll definitely be aiming for it and I’m not looking to retire any time soon! You come from a netball family with both yourself and your sister playing for England, is there a history of sibling competitiveness?! I don’t think we have any competiveness against each other because we don’t play the same positions. We almost want each other to do really well so that we are both thriving in the attacking end. You need the other player to be as aspiring as you. …and we understand you both have a little trademark celebration if the team win of back flips on the court?! (laughs) Yes, when we have had some of more special moments on the court, like beating Australia, we’ve had the adrenaline going and the crowd was cheering us on so we went for it! It had a bit of social media excitement and following which was great. When we were in Primary School, before the netball started, we’d both go to the gymnastics club after school pretty much every day for years so we learnt a few moves there! Can you tell us about your current training regime? Depending on what kind of week we’re on, we do two or three weight sessions or two or three conditioning sessions in that week and we have to try and fit it in individually. As a team, we get together twice a week to train on technical and tactical stuff then there are other things we need to fit in like prehab and rehab training. The prehab works is doing stuff to stop you from getting injured. Then we have video analysis sessions to look back on and feed back to the team and wall work sessions which are other technical ways to practise away from the team with a ball against the wall.

“TO HAVE A HUGE GROUP OF PEOPLE ON THAT SCALE OUT TO ENJOY THEMSELVES BUT WITH SOME SPORTING COMPETIVENESS, WORKS SO WELL. WITH IT GETTING BIGGER EACH YEAR, IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THE STRENGTH OF THE FESTIVAL AND I CAN ONLY SEE THAT CONTINUING EVERY YEAR.” SASHA, ON THE FORTHCOMING BOURNEMOUTH 7S FESTIVAL

MEET THE PRO

SASHA CORBIN

Do you take part in any other sports? No! It’s all netball apart from when we get time off which we’ve not had for a while. I’ll do something for fun, maybe some rounders with friends or roller skating but nothing that’s really competitive to try and stay away injury! But, it’s good to do something active and fun when we do get a bit of free time. The 8th Bournemouth 7’s Festival takes place this month; can we look forward to seeing you there this year? I probably won’t be playing but I’ll definitely be there to support and to enjoy the festival. It’s an amazing weekend and the buzz that everyone gets from it is great. To have a huge group of people on that scale out to enjoy themselves but with some sporting competiveness, works so well. With it getting bigger each year, it just goes to show the strength of the festival and I can only see that continuing every year. I’m hoping for good weather! How has the Bournemouth 7s Festival contributed to the increased profile of netball in the UK? People constantly talk about it following the event and load up their pictures on social media. It has a really positive impact on the sport.

down to do Q&A’s and there’ll be a three course dinner and entertainment. The entire England Netball team will be there. It’s on the 18th June and you can follow us on Twitter @NetballUnites. Finally, if people wanted to give netball a go or return to it, what would you say to them? I would say I have made my best friends through netball. Just the fact that you can play and train with like-minded women is fantastic. You’ll train and play but you won’t realise you are training hard just because you are having so much fun. If people don’t know where to go, if you click on the ‘Back to Netball’ section on the England Netball website www. englandnetball.co.uk, you can type in your postcode to find out where you can get involved. Also, I do solo sessions on You Tube – if you type in Sasha Corbin you’ll find uploads every week which show skills that you can do yourself. It’s a fun way of practising and all you need is a ball and a wall. They come out every Tuesday so take a look. Thank you for your time Sasha and we wish you all the best with your future.

We know that your team are sponsored by local brand Viper 10 Sportswear, what sort of impact are they having on netball? I think to have them on board with the Mavericks, who are one of the top franchises in the league, is amazing. They have fresh designs and a lot of people want to know where we get our kit from. Viper 10 produce fantastic, quirky designs and you can pretty much ask for whatever you want on the kit which attracts a lot of attention. How do the Viper 10 team support you off the court and what makes them different from other brands? Viper 10 help promote us both on and off the court. They have a really great backing and a massive social media presence so a lot of people see all the posts they do to support us. With the festival, they invite us down, get us involved and welcome us with open arms. They’ve always back us from the beginning which is great. We understand you’re involved in a project called Netball Unites, can you tell us more about that? Netball Unites is a charity event for ‘Cancer Research’ and mental health charity, ‘Mind’. It’s being solely run by the England Netball players and we’re literally doing the entire organisation ourselves! We’re hoping it’s a real success. We want to celebrate female sports in general and we’re inviting other sports champions

TALENTED LEAF STUDIO STUDENT ALI FIELDING IS ON-TRACK TO OLYMPIC STARDOM

t just 15, Bournemouth’s Ali Fielding is already in hot pursuit of Olympic cycling glory. The LeAF Studio student has been invited to join the Olympic Development Programme (ODP) – two-years ahead of time. Ali, who has only just turned 15, has caught the eye of the UK’s top cycling coaches after an array of impressive finishes in national indoor and outdoor competitions. Competing against mainly 16 year-olds, Ali has already notched up impressive third places in the UK School Games and National Track Championships as well as winning the Circuit Road Race. And now the youngster could soon be joining an ODP camp, aimed at the best sporting prospects in the country. The sprint-cyclist said: “The ODP coach has told me he’s been really impressed with my recent results and has asked me to join one of their training camps.

“ODP is usually for 17 to 18 year-olds so there’s a bit more to arrange so I can join one of the camps but I’m hopeful this will happen later in the year - I should also be on the full programme by the end of the year.” The Great Britain Cycling Team’s Olympic Development Programme is a key stepping stone for junior age riders to develop as fulltime cyclists. It offers a series of training camps and competitions geared towards getting young cyclists to the very top of their sport. And it’s a dream Ali has been pursuing since the age of 12 when his older brother encouraged him to take up cycle racing. Within four months of taking up the saddle, the then 12 year-old Ali finished fourth in his first national track championships. Now, like his hero Sir Chris Hoy, Ali has his sights on winning gold in the velodrome. “Cycling is my life and I am really excited about the prospect of joining some of the best young riders in the country,” Ali said. “It’s a full-time pursuit and I couldn’t do it

without the wonderful support from my family and the expert coaching and guidance I receive at school.” Ali is one of Dorset’s young elite athletes who attend Bournemouth’s specialist LeAF Studio school. As well as his day-to-day academic studies, Ali receives top sporting, conditioning and nutritional coaching.

“WHAT ALI IS ACHIEVING AT HIS AGE IS SIMPLY PHENOMENAL. HE IS OUTPERFORMING CYCLISTS MUCH OLDER AND MORE EXPERIENCED AND WE’RE NOT AT ALL SURPRISED HE IS NOW UNDER THE RADAR OF THE NATIONAL CYCLING TEAM COACHES. WE ARE VERY PROUD OF HIM.” EXECUTIVE PRINCIPAL, GILL BLANSHARD

VILLAGE

Celebrating 10 Years of great hospitality at Village, Bournemouth his year marks 10 years since Village Bournemouth first opened its doors to welcome leisure members, hotel guests and locals into our hotel, leisure club, spa and food and beverage outlets. During this time we have seen many of the areas refurbished including most recently our Starbucks coffee shop and we have also had a few name changes to both the hotel and outlets as we strive to keep our offering up to date, with most recently our ‘Victory pub’ changing to ‘The Public House’, now offering a new menu concept and weekly promotions and events. Throughout this time we have strived to deliver great hospitality and service to all of our guests. Over the years we have welcomed a few famous faces for the night, catered for some very special requirements for our guests and dealt with some interesting challenges, including power cuts and water problems, but during this time we have always proudly provided great hospitality and we are looking forward to much more of the same over the next 10 years. AERIAL YOGA

WELCOME TO THE YOGA ZONE, A WELLBEING FEATURE IN ASSOCIATION WITH BIKRAM YOGA, BOURNEMOUTH. THIS MONTH, FIND OUT ABOUT A NEW FORM OF YOGA OFFERED AT THE BIKRAM STUDIOS…AERIAL YOGA. EXPLORE THE JOY OF EXERCISING WHILST AIRBORNE. TAKE YOUR PRACTISE OFF THE MAT AND INTO THE AIR... SEE YOURSELF FLY! ABOUT Aerial yoga is a fitness regime that combines yoga, pilates and dance, while allowing the practitioner to stretch, strengthen his/her body and relax completely in invigorating upside down positions by being suspended with the help of anti-gravity hammocks. The practitioner is suspended in the air in an inverted position with the support of an aerial hammock, which is a silky fabric that supports the body while the practitioner can hang in an inverted position and also perform various postures to relax between stunts. Though the anti-gravity swing looks like any other swing, it is actually quite strong and safe and can sustain up to 20 stone in weight. Generally, at the beginning of each class, the instructors adjust the hammock according to height of the practitioner to allow him to balance his/her weight comfortably.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Respiration is really important, it produces energy that is essential for the normal functioning of the body. Energy is defined as the ability to do work. Cellular respiration provides energy for living organisms. So, cellular respiration is important because it provides the energy for living organisms to perform all of the other necessary functions to maintain life. Most single-celled organisms, such as bacteria, do not require much energy and are able to survive on glycolysis and fermentation. Our ability to think, walk, and talk require enormous amounts of energy which can only be provided by aerobic respiration. Respiration provides cells with oxygen and expels toxic carbon dioxide. Note that cells need energy for movement, multiplication, the synthesis of essential molecules and maintaining body temperature. Anaerobic respiration produces small amounts of energy in the absence of oxygen. The body cannot store oxygen. The respiratory system also warms, humidifies and filters air during gaseous exchange.

Posture of the Month – Downward Dog

TESTIMONIAL I drove past the Aerial Yoga studio and noticed the pictures on the window of people hanging upside down from a hammock and I thought…. “Crikey – I wonder if I could do that?” It looked fun, daring and very different to anything I have done before, so I took down the number and gave them a call. They assured me that the class was for all levels of fitness and ability so I booked myself in. FUN? Yesssssss, bundles of it! DARING? On a personal level I felt like an acrobat (which I can assure you I am definitely not). It gave me a taste of what

circus performers do, it was fantastic. DIFFERENT? If you want a class where you laugh, squeal with excitement and oddly after all that, at the very end of class you will experience the best relaxation of your life by laying out in your hammock, weightless and gently rocking side to side letting all of your thoughts go. I have been back 5 times now and truly feel FAR more flexible already. The stretches are safe as the hammock protects you. The teachers are wonderful and the studio is lovely. What a welcome addition to Bournemouth.

PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP SUMMMER IS FAST APPROACHING

Julie Cook-Hughes, Managing Director & Founder of SOS recruitment

Julie Cook-Hughes has over 20 years’ experience in recruitment, she is a spirited, energetic and forward thinking Managing Director who is hugely appreciative of her dedicated Management Team and their team members. Her extremely successful business has been built over 14 years and she has every right to feel extremely proud of the successful business she has created. Julie values her staff and continually shows her appreciation, recognising their efforts on a daily basis – a mean ‘feat’ in itself for such a busy person. Julie is an approachable person, who will always listen to new ideas and initiatives and drive her business forward to ultimately make the business even more successful. As far as SOS Recruitment are concerned we truly know there is ‘no better Recruitment Agency’ – do not take our word for it, contact us NOW!

REALISE YOUR CAREER DREAMS – YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF! t doesn’t seem possible that we are already approaching ‘SUMMER’ – thank goodness, we all sigh! We are all thinking about those summer holidays and time away from work. Statistics prove that ‘holiday blues’ are more frequently associated with going back to a job or career that really isn’t something we enjoy – YOU have to do something about this! Time for change and superb CAREER OPPORTUNITIES are just around the corner! Julie Cook-Hughes is proud to be the successful Managing Director of one of Bournemouth’s highly successful High Street agencies. SOS Recruitment prides itself on being your dedicated ‘Career Partner’ ensuring you feel you are being guided in your career path to realise your true potential! Whether you have experience working in an office, have worked within the Care Industry or have been an Engineer or perhaps worked within an industrial environment, SOS’s three dedicated divisions can HELP YOU! The SOS team are a passionate group of individuals who really do love what they do. Assisting both clients and candidates and providing an exceptional service is second nature to them! With over 125 years of experience amongst the team, you will find no better High Street Recruitment agency to assist you. In the UK, we work more hours per week than our European counterparts, we must ensure that the job environment we work within both stimulates us and suits our lifestyle. When considering your job options, always make a list of ‘pro’s’ and ‘con’s’, this will enable you to think about what type of role appeals to you and whether you are skilled within this type of work or, in fact, you know what a particular job entails. SOS Recruitment’s experienced team are extremely knowledgeable across a broad range of industry sectors, they will be able to advise you whether your skill set and job wishes matches the role you have an interest in. SEEKING THAT ‘ALL IMPORTANT’ JOB SATISFACTION We are all very different, therefore the motivating factors within a work environment vary for us all. Some people will only undertake a role in the belief that this will ultimately result in job satisfaction, the money they earn for a particular job may bear no relevance. For example, some ‘Care Roles’ do not pay particularly well, the hours are often very unsociable and the work itself is hard graft! There are many individuals that really do thrive on caring for people, their job satisfaction comes from seeing people being well cared for. Those of us who have never worked within the ‘Care Sector’ should ask ourselves, do we see ourselves as a Carer in a role that receives amazing job satisfaction helping others? Do not hesitate, take the next step. SOS RECRUITMENT’S CARE DIVISION – A REALLY WORTHWHILE CAREER PATH, BELIEVE US! Whether you are an experienced Care Worker or have never worked within this sector WE WANT TO MEET YOU! Julie Cook-Hughes, Managing Director of SOS Recruitment is very passionate about this division, her drive and enthusiasm to make a success of assisting others less unfortunate come from her childhood with her own parents running a successful Nursing Home. Julie’s caring personality is at the very core of starting up this now well established Care Division! The SOS Recruitment Care Division really does care about looking after its bank of staff who often work 7 days a week in these various organisations. The division also attracts Senior Management staff who are seeking their next career move, Senior Care Manager roles for example. EXPERIENCED ENGINEERS – URGENTLY SOUGHT! The SOS Workforce Division is extremely fortunate to deal with a number of highly successful companies who employ experienced Engineers. Retention within engineering roles is, on the whole, extremely good within these companies.

20

However, there is an element of people who are seeking a change or perhaps moving abroad/retiring resulting in new opportunities arising. If you have proven Engineering experience please approach the SOS Workforce team – they would love to hear from you! If you are a college leaver seeking a career path, why not consider an ‘Engineering Apprenticeship’ – definitely a worthwhile career path to follow! ARE YOU A NATURAL BORN ‘SALES PERSON’? The most successful, entrepreneurial sales people have come from some unlikely backgrounds! Natural sales people are on the whole excellent communicators and negotiators. Customers when receiving sales calls from companies will often comment that the person who called them was either ‘too aggressive’ or ‘read from a script’! Customers want to speak with ‘humans’ not ‘robots’ - they want to glean a person’s personality over the phone and want to hear an honest conversation as to why a product or service being sold is right for them. Good sales people build longevity in their relationships with clients, ensuring time and time again they gain repeat business and recommendations. Just one of SOS’s recruitment successes is building strong and lasting relationships with both clients and candidates resulting in ultimate success. Think about a sales role, it’s extremely satisfying and rewarding. If your motivator is money on top of your basic salary, a sales role really could be the catalyst to realise some of your long-term dreams! AFRAID OF CHANGE? Climbing out of your comfort zone and into the unknown is often frightening – placing your toe into unknown territory can make the most confident of us feel quite scared and uncertain. Let’s be honest, we are given one opportunity to make the most of our working lives and we as individuals are prone to making excuses as to why we do not move within our careers. The opportunities available are vast and exciting! SOS Recruitment is testament to this – the job opportunities this year have been phenomenal – we have experienced the busiest year by far since the tail end of the recession; businesses are feeling more confident, are growing and developing new areas of their business and requiring the services of a recruitment agency more than ever! When needing advice as to a career change or an enhancement in a current job role, SOS Recruitment’s team are the experts to honestly advise you on the best course of action to take. If you have a number of quality skills that you know you are not utilising in your current role, you owe it to yourself to investigate the opportunities available to you – both a frightening but exciting challenge to make that all important CAREER MOVE! EXCITING AND REWARDING CAREER OPPORTUNITIES WORKING FOR SOS RECRUITMENT SOS Recruitment really is SIZZLING WITH SPRING/SUMMER JOB OPPORTUNITIES within their various divisions. You will be working with talented and experienced consultants who really have experienced the fantastic rewards that recruitment brings! You will receive FULL TRAINING, A SUPERB SALARY PACKAGE AND COMMISSION PACKAGE AND A TRULY BUZZING, CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT! SOS Recruitment is a long established and highly successful High Street Recruitment Agency which has had many, many years of success since opening over 15 years ago. Julie Cook-Hughes, the Founder and Managing Director of SOS Recruitment is a highly motivated and energised individual who has superb insight which has taken SOS Recruitment into its dizzy heights of SUCCESS. She recognises her staff and their achievements and is always seeking to develop new talent. Julie is not afraid of hard work and will always ensure she remains at the very ‘heart ‘of the business. Female FOCUS TENNIS

WE’RE SPEAKING TO LOCAL WOMEN AND GIRLS INVOLVED IN DIFFERENT SPORTS ACROSS THE AREA TO FIND OUT THEIR MOTIVATION, PASSION AND STORY ABOUT THEIR DESIRE TO COMPETE.

NAME: WEST HANTS TENNIS ACADEMY GIRLS TEAM SCHOOL: TALBOT HEATH SPORT: TENNIS HI GIRLS, THANKS FOR TALKING TO US AND CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR FANTASTIC ACHIEVEMENT AT THE WORLD SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN QATAR EARLIER THIS YEAR…CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE EVENT AND HOW YOU GOT ON? We won the National Championships back in July 2014 against Queenswood School, which meant that we had qualified for the World School Finals in Qatar from March 7th-15th. We were drawn against Thailand, France and Italy within our box. Our first opponents were Thailand and we won 6-0, which was repeated against Italy the following day. We also had a successful day against France and won 5-1, ensuring our place in the quarter-finals. We were drawn against China, and after drawing 3-3 in matches, it was down to games. We managed to successfully win by 1 single game! This meant that we had progressed to the semi-finals against Turkey. Unfortunately, we lost by a few games, however every match was fought hard for in good spirit. Germany were also tricky opponents who clinched 3rd place on the final day of our trip.

West Hants Tennis Academy Girls Team: Ellie, Lauryn, Anna, Millie and Jodie.

…AND HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE FOURTH BEST SCHOOL TEAM IN THE WORLD? It is an incredible feeling which none of us ever thought we would experience. After narrowly losing a year ago in the Nationals it was extremely rewarding to have represented England and come home saying we are the 4th best tennis school in the world. WHAT DO YOUR FRIENDS AND TEACHERS AT YOUR SCHOOL, TALBOT HEATH, THINK OF YOUR SUCCESS? All of our friends and teachers have been very supportive and were asking how we were getting on throughout the week and spreading the news! It was also very kind of our school to welcome us in such a enthusiastic manner and having a genuine interest in our trip and our overall experience. HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAIN AND WHAT IS YOUR USUAL TRAINING REGIME? Anna: The school partnership with the West Hants club allows us to manage our tennis and school balance so that we can train for competitions as well as gain academic grades for the future. Each day varies slightly with my tennis and school commitments; however, generally, I would play around 2 hours a day, with an additional hour of fitness. On some days we have mental skills sessions with sports psychologists, alongside Pilates and Yoga sessions to help look after our bodies. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO RELAX AFTER A TOUGH GAME OR TRAINING SESSION? We are lucky enough to have a swimming pool which we can use after training if time permits. We also have access to two gyms, one of them being specialised to the Academy players. The gym staff are very helpful and advise us on specific stretches or exercises if we feel we need to be more specific with our recovery in order to avoid injury.

West Hants Director of Tennis, Mark Reid, with Lauryn and Jodie. 22

DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER SPORTS? Anna: I am very passionate about sport, and this doesn’t just mean tennis! I enjoy playing badminton and participating in cross-country, especially in my down time when I want to have some fun.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR SCHOOL WORK WITH YOUR TRAINING AND COMPETING? Talbot Heath and West Hants have a very strong relationship which allows efficient management of our time and our development both as tennis players and academic students. The teachers are cooperative in the sense that they will provide your work if you will be away competing, and extend deadlines for homework if needed. We often take our school work to our competition if time permits, and if we feel that our work is starting to build up, the tennis coaches are understanding and allow us to miss some training to catch up.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? Anna: I am attending the University of Northern Colorado in August 2015, where I will pursue my tennis and academic work to the next level. I am going to be studying sport and exercise science, which would hopefully allow me to look into a career of physiotherapy. CAN YOU DESCRIBE IN THREE WORDS WHAT PLAYING TENNIS MEANS TO YOU? Progress and achievement. FINALLY, WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE READING THIS WHO MIGHT WANT TO GIVE TENNIS A GO? Anna: I started tennis at the age of 7, and I worked my way through red, orange and green tennis. For youngsters who are interested in tennis, it is important to enjoy what you do, because a combination of hard work and dedication will help you progress, but you have to ultimately enjoy the sport in order to drive to the next stage and reach your true potential. Thank you for talking to us. We wish you continued success with your sport in the future.

WEST HANTS

Six Pack Frustrations ‘What exercise should I do to get a six pack?’ is a question I get asked from time to time. he answers that flash through my mind before being polite include; you’ve already got a six pack, it’s just covered with your years of carb abuse, or try doing 5 sets of not eating so much rubbish. The truth is there isn’t an exercise that will give someone a six pack. Some trainer’s cite crunches as the king of abdominal exercises but we all know someone who performs hundreds of crunches or sit ups with no sign of defined abdominals. If you can see abdominals on someone it simply means they have low body fat levels around their waist, and performing sit ups and crunches will not do a thing to reduce the fat in that area, in fact it may even develop the size of the area further by building the underlying muscles slightly. Addressing the following two things will point you in the right direction. First of all consider the big compound lifts. We see lots of young chaps ‘bodybuilding;’ working their showy muscles with curls, fly’s and various dumbbell rises, adding some crunches in the mix and expecting to see abdominal development but unless they are lean it doesn’t happen. However, most of the CrossFit and Olympic lifting groups all have well developed abs (unless they are beginners, or eat lots of carb rich foods). Both CrossFit and Olympic lifting involve lots of squats, cleans, deadlifts, overhead presses and of course Olympic lifts which work the core muscles better

than anything. People are finally starting to realise that standing on an upturned bosu while balancing a ball on your head does nothing for core, it’s mostly working ankle stability. If you really want to develop the core and burn as many calories as possible at the same time, lift heavy and use multi joint exercises. Secondly get your diet on track. Reducing calories will of course help you lose weight, however if you want to look better stripped, that’s not going to help much as losing weight means muscle along with fat and ending up as just a smaller version of your previous self with still no abs in sight. So, maintain protein intake (lean unprocessed meats, poultry, eggs, fish etc) also some healthy fats from oily fish, olive oil and a few nuts (unsalted) and reduce or knock out your carbs like cereals, bread, pasta, most dairy including low fat. Vegetables are great but moderate potatoes. Also moderate your fruit, berries are fine but things like bananas and grapes are high in fructose and glucose, and never drink fruit juice; all the fibre taken out of fruit makes a sugary drink that is a sure way to keep you from seeing a flat defined stomach. If you like juices, make your own vegetable smoothie. If you google CrossFit Athlete you’ll see a lean sexy man or women with great abs that tends to eat Paleo and train fast and heavy, not someone who does high volume endurance work and eats copious amounts of carbs. Allow yourself to be guided by the preachers in great shape. Mark Daley

Hydration

Q Why is hydration so important? A Keeping on top of your hydration as the demand for fluids increases is essential in maximising your performance and looking after your health. As we exercise, our increased muscle activity causes our body temperature to rise. Our bodies don’t tolerate large changes in our core temperature very well at all, and sweating is our mechanism to keep ourselves cool. Q What happens when we sweat? A As we sweat, the fluid takes heat away from the skin as it evaporates. This cools the blood flow close to the skin, which helps to keep the core cool as the cooled blood returns to the vital organs and circulates around the body. Over time this fluid loss limits our ability to control our body temperature and our exercise performance so we need to replace it! As you become dehydrated, sweat loss causes a decrease in your blood plasma volume. Blood flow to the skin is then reduced to maintain the supply to the brain, organs and working muscles. This causes a rise in your core temperature, leading to fatigue.

Q Do I just drink water? A Your body is always striving to keep everything in balance, including the balance of electrolytes and sugars in the fluid around your cells. Drinking large volumes of water stimulates your kidneys to try and get rid of excess water to keep the balance of electrolytes the same in your blood stream, which is the opposite of what you are aiming to do! Q So what do I take? A By taking on fluid with electrolytes, particularly sodium, the fluid you are taking on is better retained. Q How much should I drink? A The amount you need to drink varies widely according to the temperature, humidity and your own sweat rate. This maybe anything from 500-1000ml of fluid per hour. Q How do I know I’m drinking enough? A Ideally you should drink so that your urine is pale straw-coloured.

COMPETITION

Team WOW take on the USA FEMALE CYCLING TEAM, TEAM WOW (4 WOMEN ON WHEELS) ARE TAKING ON A HUGE CHALLENGE COMPETING IN THE 860 MILE RACE ACROSS THE WEST (THE 1ST STAGE OF THE ICONIC RACE ACROSS AMERICA) BEGINNING ON 16 JUNE 2015. JANE BATES IS SETTING OFF TO JOIN AMERICAN TEAMMATES JEANA MILLER, STACY CASON, AND LEAH LEMKE ON 10 JUNE, AND WE CAUGHT UP WITH JANE AHEAD OF THEIR ADVENTURE… Hi Jane, thanks for talking to us. How did it come about for Team WOW to compete in this event? I’ve known about the Race Across America for years – even before I started cycling, and thought what a great experience it would be. Fortunately my friend Jeana shared the same vision – and from there the team was born. Tell us about your training in the build up to this challenge… My training started at the beginning of December, with 3 months on the indoor trainer – a variety of sessions 4x per week aimed at building endurance strength and power plus strength sessions in the gym. The winter training was tough – the indoor trainer is pretty soul destroying – there’s only so much catch up TV to watch or playlists worth listening to! How long do you expect it to take and what is the route for the West section? It is a single stage race, once the clock starts ticking we have to complete 860 miles within 66 hours to achieve a ‘finisher’ status. We will be working in relay format – through the day and night, with 2 back up vehicles and 5 support crew. The route begins in Oceanside California, weaves its way through the California, Arizona and Utah deserts and into Colorado, finishing in Durango. How are you all feeling with just a few weeks to go? Winter training enabled me to build up endurance strength in a very time efficient way – and now out on the roads in the UK I can see it has really paid off so I’m feeling confident. I’ve also just come back from a week’s hard training with two of my teammates in California. We had unseasonably high temperatures - great experience for cycling in extremes of heat.

WIN A FAMILY TICKET TO WATCH THE MIGHTY POOLE PIRATES AT POOLE SPEEDWAY.

James Davies, Director of Exerformance will also be flying out to the USA to provide on board hyrdration and nutrition support to the team during the race.

How to Enter

James, this is a massive feat that Jane and the rest of the team are undertaking, how important is it for them to be following a correct nutrition plan to get them through it? Good nutrition is key to providing them with sufficient energy! So ensuring an adequate intake of good quality carbohydrates is key before and during any training session. They’ll be taking on liquid carbohydrate and food whilst training. After a session they need to start recovery with a mixture of carbohydrates and protein to aid muscle repair.

Closing date for entries is Tuesday 31st May 2015, the winner will be picked randomly from all entries and notified by Wednesday 1st June 2015.

…and good hydration will obviously play a huge part of this? Yes. Hydration isn’t simply drinking water – it’s ensuring that the body has the correct electrolyte balance, and in extreme temperatures with short recovery time between rides it is essential that they remain properly hydrated throughout.

GOOD LUCK!

We wish Jane and the rest of Team WOW all the best and look forward to hearing about how it went.

CASTLE CAMERAS

THE SS M BY RO

WITH THE EVENINGS DRAWING LONGER, THE TEMPERATURES RISING, AND THE FIRST BARBECUES BEGINNING TO IGNITE, WE START TO SENSE THAT THE BRITISH SUMMER IS FINALLY ON ITS WAY.

Despite the goal posts being taken down and the boots stowed away until September, the summer months leave us in no short supply of sporting options to get our teeth into. In fact, with the more hospitable outdoor conditions, and the luxury of living near the seaside, our opportunities are broader than ever before. Widely regarded to have the largest range of watersports and activities in Europe, Bournemouth and Poole’s coastline, stretching for 7 glorious miles, is certain to offer something for everyone regardless of age or ability, and plenty of room to leave your beach towels! With the warmer weather and fantastic facilities available to the public, there are no excuses left to not give some new and exciting sports a try. Being able to socialise with like-minded people, have fun for little to no expenditure, whilst improving your fitness simultaneously - there really is nothing to be lost in embracing what’s on offer. The Coastal Activity Park surrounding Boscombe Pier is home to activities such as surfing, bodyboarding, kayaking and fishing, whilst also offering more leisurely options such as walking/running routes, spa sessions and orienteering for those who prefer a more relaxing experience. If the prospect of surfing is a little too daunting, stand-up paddleboarding, which has grown rapidly in recent years, comes at a much more leisurely pace. The sport uses a board thicker and 1628 WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK

wider than a traditional surfboard to encourage better balance, whilst you paddle using a single oar. Many water sport providers guarantee to get you up on the board paddling around within the very first lesson. The rise of recreational fitness over the last decade has accelerated the development and production of new and exciting sports, for those who are willing to try something different and challenging. Bouldering involves climbing rock formations, with the features (located next to Boscombe pier) representing the same shapes as local formations such as Durdle Door and Old Harry Rocks. Or maybe you’re one that enjoys fueling the adrenaline craving that so many desire. If being dragged along by a speedboat with nothing but a board between your feet sounds like your idea of fun, then wakeboarding is the perfect opportunity to try something new, and challenging, with the sports popularity seeing people come back for more after their first experience. Other fast-paced adrenaline sports such as kite-boarding, which uses a kite to pull you across the ocean on a board are becoming increasingly popular as they offer an experience rarely found in other sports. For those petrol-heads who wish to combine their love of vehicles with the beautiful coast, Jet skiing and powerboating courses and rentals certainly aren’t for the faint hearted. With the infinite space and tantalising views across Dorset’s coast, there can be no better place in the country to give it a go.

Instead of dreading the quick dash from the water to get the warm fans blowing in the car, whilst your body temperature sinks close to freezing, Bournemouth now offer warm showers, modern changing rooms and even the opportunity to rent beach pods at various locations along the seafront, making water activities much more enjoyable and leisurely throughout the summer. If your football withdrawal symptoms start to kick in too soon, don’t worry. Activity centres running from Boscombe to Poole can provide beach football pitch rentals to keep you happy, make the world’s most popular sport even more fun! The surging popularity for adrenalinefilled sports, and the way that this is captured has been revolutionised through technology. With a huge importance on social media in sharing our unique and exciting experiences, along with new product ranges such as the GoPro, we are able to record our firsthand sporting experiences, and easily share this online with our friends, and encourage them to take part. We all know the feeling - the regret at not taking a snapshot of a certain moment, one which would make us smile at each look through the photo album - but this needn’t be the case. With such a dependence on collecting these moments, it’s vital to ensure we use the best possible equipment to really grasp the experience in a true perspective through images or video footage.

WITH KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF, A FANTASTIC RANGE OF PRODUCTS INCLUDING THE GOPRO SERIES, AND COMPETITIVE PRICES, BOURNEMOUTH-BASED CASTLE CAMERAS ARE CERTAINLY THE ONLY CONTACT YOU NEED TO FULFIL ALL OF YOUR NEEDS FOR CAPTURING THE PERFECT MOMENT BOTH IN AND OUT OF THE SPORTING ARENA.

Thanks for talking to us, Andy...can you tell us what got you into SUP and how long have you been doing it? I got into SUP about 5 years ago, mainly as an alternative water sport for the school we run when there weren’t any waves. I started racing SUP in 2011 with friends for the fitness and fun. Tell us a bit about your watersports history and where your love for the sea comes from... I grew up in Christchurch N.Z. When I started high school at 12, my friend’s big brother was a surfer (a rarity back then) and a group of us followed in his footsteps. I had a friend in the group who lived down the beach and we used to cycle there (20 mile round trip) most days in the weekends and holidays. From there we were hooked on surfing and since then, I have been to some amazing places experiencing them from land and sea. You are owner of Surf Steps, a popular surf and paddleboarding school on Bournemouth beach front. Can you tell us about the school and what you have to offer people? I started surf coaching for Just Add Water (used to be a chain of surf shops in the south of England) and when the company got taken over and the focus of the retailer changed, I took over the surf school as part of my redundancy package. I started running it as my own company in April 2005. It’s just turned ten years old and we offer services to learn, progress to high level and hire for surf and SUP. Additional services available are coaching and lifeguarding qualifications, with athlete support. Do you take part in any other watersports apart from surfing and paddleboarding? Surf lifesaving, Boating, OC (outrigger canoe) diving and spear fishing. What do you prefer, flat water paddling or wave riding? Both! When it’s flat or small/junky waves on a SUP and I love surfing when the surf is good! You have been selected to represent Team GB in the forthcoming World Paddleboard Championships in Mexico later this month… what was involved with the selection process and how are you feeling with a few weeks to go? I was selected on the UKSUP clubs 2014 race series rankings. I was 3rd in the 12’6” race division and luckily, Pete Kosinski, the guy that came 2nd is Irish so couldn’t be selected. Lucky boy! I’m still pinching myself, never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be representing my country in any sport!! How can people follow this challenge and get behind you with donations? The World Champs will be live streamed via the ISA website https://www.isasurf.org/ and if you want to support my campaign, have a look at http://www. crowdfunder.co.uk/help-andy-to-get-to-the-supworld-champs As SUP is a new sport, it doesn’t get any funding like established sports to send National team members to events. Has your training stepped up in preparation? Yes, I started training in November, with a long base building cycle (lots of cross training, yoga, swimming, running) with long slow speed sessions where I changed my paddling technique and paddle type. It was annoying not doing very well in races during the winter as I wasn’t race tuned. But, it paid dividends as I’ve come into the race season faster, fitter and not carrying injuries for a change! Can you tell us about any previous competitions/wins you’ve had? One of the most memorable races was the H2O Poole Harbour challenge last year, I battled it out all the way, neck and neck with my good paddling

buddy, Tim Harley. 500 meters from the finish, he fell in, I shot off thinking I’d cracked it, 10 seconds later; a kite surfer dropped his kite right in front of me! I managed to flick all the lines over my head without getting tangled (I don’t know how) and fortunately still managed to win. What do you think of the conditions locally in Bournemouth and along the coast? We’re blessed with some awesome SUP conditions and environments - Two harbours for flat water, we can always race/train in Christchurch Harbour, no matter how stormy it is. There are lots of adventure paddling spots like the Purbecks and challenging open water paddling in Poole Bay. We could do with more sun and warm water, but that would make us take it for granted. SUP seems to have really taken off locally over recent years and our coastline is seeing more and more people giving it a go. Why do you think it’s attracting more people? It has an easier learning curve and you can use them in a greater variety of conditions than surfboards and wind sports. I believe it’s perceived by many as a cool watersport as well. Which surf report to you use to check out conditions locally? Combination of MSW and Wind Guru – you can’t beat using the eyeball though! Where is a good place for people who may be thinking about giving paddleboarding a go? Slightly biased here: Surf Steps - the quality of tuition is good as we’ve a coach training centre and have been providing SUP longer than most. Poole Harbour and the schools round there are a good place to start too. Once you’re past the basics and want to develop, check out the local club BaySUPUK Club champs last 2 years. Give us three benefits of paddleboarding… Develop/improve aerobic fitness and core strength; meet new people or catch up with old friends in a stress reducing, interesting environment. Need anymore?! What’s your favourite SUP hot spot in the surrounding area? Downwinding (paddling being assisted by the wind and waves so you go fast!) across Poole Bay in high winds, island hopping in the Harbours and paddling round the Purbecks/Jurassic Coast finding new places or rediscovering old ones from the water. …and your favourite hangout place? Locally, at home with the family, Monty’s and any of the bars south side of Christchurch Road, Boscombe. Finally, what’s the best place you’ve ever been to paddleboard? Noosa heads, Queensland Australia - In an hour and a half round trip, you can paddle in the sound with stingrays, in and out through the surf riding waves, along the headland looking at the national park and come away into open water and downwind back to where you started from. All done in tropical waters looking at turtles and dolphins - epic! We wish you the best of luck at the Championships and look forward to seeing you out on the water this summer.

MY TEAM

OAKS OLD BOYS RUGBY TEAM “HELLO AND WELCOME TO OAKS OLD BOYS RUGBY. WE ARE A GROUP OF VETERAN RUGBY PLAYERS MADE UP FROM EX AND EXISTING PLAYERS FROM OAKMEADIANS RFC MEYRICK PARK BOURNEMOUTH.” Our club is only in its first year of existence and already we have a huge following with over 252 members, most of which are players. The whole ethos of setting up this group was to rekindle old friendships forged together on the rugby field over many years and to get together to play a handful of games over the season. Wherever we can, we have great fun playing and look at opportunities to raise some money for charity whenever possible. So far, we have had four games since October, the first of which was held over at our good rugby friends and comrades, the mighty Dorset Dockers RFC. We held a double header day of rugby in the #LegendsUnite Match. Since then, we have not looked back and played at East Dorset RFC, Blandford RFC and recently, at our old home, Oakmeadians RFC where we played our old rivals, Wimborne RFC veterans in #TheHomeComing Match. We walked away as 29-12 winners on the day. We have played 4, won 3 and lost 1 to Blandford. Our Player/Head Coach is ex-Bournemouth RFC player and coach, Richard Carrel who is also Vice Chairman of the Oaks Old Boys. Richard has an extensive playing and coaching history and is an absolute asset to the team. We currently have a great group of sponsors who have helped us get up and running and they all continue to back us as we grow as a group day by day.

offers an additional 40mm of rear headroom and 495 litres of load capacity, which can be expanded to an impressive 1,354 litres with the split fold rear seats lowered.

Exhilaration isn’t compromised by economy however, the CLA 200 CDI’s punchy four-cylinder engine outputting 136hp whilst returning 72.4mpg (combined) and 106g/ km of CO2. AFC BOURNEMOUTH

UP THE CHERRIES MacDonald had to wait until the first week of February for his first league appearance of the season and his involvement has increased from there on in.

NATIONAL SERVICE GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT AS SHAUN MACDONALD IS DISCOVERING WITH FORTUNES FOR CLUB AND COUNTRY

Shaun MacDonald is starting to get used to life at the top of the table. With the Cherries around the summit in the Sky Bet Championship and Wales moving into pole position in their Euro 2016 qualifying group, both campaigns are shaping up for thrilling and potentially historic conclusions. As the latest international break started, MacDonald’s club colleagues left for a warm weather training camp in Dubai, while he joined Chris Coleman’s squad ahead of a crucial fixture against Israel. Their opponents held a 100 per cent record going into the latest round of qualifiers which they were set to defend in front of a hostile crowd in Haifa. With Wales also undefeated, it appeared that something had to give and it proved to be Israel’s unbeaten start. Wales won the match 3-0, marking the half way point of the campaign by moving to the top of Group B. It was a significant step towards the finals in France next summer and also in MacDonald’s international career as he entered the field to help his country see out the final few minutes of an important victory. “I don’t think it could have gone any better for the team or myself,” he said. “I just wanted to go away and enjoy the experience. I hadn’t had the chance for a few years and it was important to take it all in. I wasn’t expecting to be involved but I came on and played a part. Joe Ledley got injured and they put David Vaughan on. Once that happened, I wasn’t optimistic I would get a chance. The gaffer and the fitness coach told me to get warmed up with ten minutes to go though and I was on the touchline praying that I would get on. “You look at the result as well and I don’t think anyone expected us to come away with a result like that.

38

“It shows how far we have come. It’s been a long time since we have reached the finals of a tournament, but we are top of the group at the moment. It just goes to show that we are capable of beating good teams.” MacDonald’s appearance in Haifa earned him a second cap, coming almost five years on from his national team debut. Since Coleman’s appointment in 2012, the midfielder’s name has appeared in a number of provisional squads, only for injury to put an end to his involvement before it even got going. In the meantime, Wales have transformed from constant under achievers to potential history makers. “I hadn’t been away with Wales for a while but I knew there were good lads in the squad,” the former Swansea City midfielder adds. “I’ve been called-up a few times in the last couple of years and had the odd niggle at the wrong time. “Little injuries have meant I haven’t been able to go and that was frustrating for me. This time I was able to and I think they have gone from strength to strength. “There’s a different feel about the group – everyone was confident and relaxed. There was a lot of pressure but it didn’t really show. When you look at our squad, we have players who are at Premier League clubs and someone like Gareth Bale. There are a few lads who have come through in the last few years and that’s positive for us. It’s an absolute honour for me to be involved in what’s going on at the moment.” With five qualifiers remaining and just over 12 months to go, it is a genuine possibility Wales and MacDonald could make the Euro 2016 finals and end the 57 year wait for qualification at a major international tournament. “I’m not booking any holidays for next summer and if I do, then maybe they will have to be cancelled!” he jokes. “It’s a massive honour for me and my family back home to be involved and I just take each day as it comes. “That’s the type of lad I am and I believe what is meant to be will be. I would love to see us qualify and to be part of it. I didn’t expect to be involved in this squad and I just want to keep building up minutes here and see where it takes me.”

Previously used exclusively in the Capital One Cup and FA Cup, there was talk of the former Yeovil Town loanee making a temporary switch during the January transfer window before starts against Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Blackpool. “I don’t think you can regret anything that happens in football,” he explains. “I made the decision to come here to get games and it was the right one. I haven’t left because I don’t want to. We play the right way, we are going in the right direction, we have a good manager and a good group of lads who stick together. That’s not something I wanted to turn my back on. I love the club, I love the area. When you’re not involved it can get to the point where you think about moving on. I’ll be honest, there was a stage in the season where I thought about going out on loan because I wasn’t getting any minutes other than in the cup games. You have to look at it that way because otherwise your career can be gone before you know it. It can be tough but being a footballer is a dream job. I realise that I’m a lucky guy. “I believe that if I come in and train well every day, then my rewards will come whichever way that happens. I’ve never taken it for granted and that’s always been my attitude towards the game.” For the final stretch, MacDonald’s focus is on club matters while international duty with Wales remains a little further back on the horizon, with more qualifiers scheduled for June. “We all talk about how things are going at our clubs,” he says. “Most of the lads are aware of what is going here and the season we have had so far. That’s a big compliment for us. People outside the Championship are taking notice of us and seeing what a good team we are. “A lot of the lads in the Wales squad play in the Championship and have played against us this season. They are fully aware of our style of play and almost all of them have said we are one of the best teams they have come up against. A few of them have tipped us for promotion and hopefully that will come true. “The gaffer will make sure we keep our feet on the floor, but hopefully I can go back in the summer and talk about us achieving something special.”
