RUGBY
New challenges ahead As we head into the New Year, we look forward to fresh challenges and hopefully some dry weather, having had several sessions disrupted by rain that flooded the pitches. The youth and mini sections suffer badly when the weather is wet and find that areas of the ground are unplayable resulting in some jiggling around for space. The 1st XV are continuing to have mixed fortunes struggling to find a consistency in results not through lack of trying but a series of injuries and unavailable players has caused some gaps in the main line up. There have been some promising performances from all areas with Sam Hardcastle reaching over 150 tries scored and some old faces back on the pitch in the shape of Dan Connolly and Tony Dunkerley. The younger players that have come up through from Colts, Lewis Dennett, Charlie Morris-Mean and Ben Meaden are making good headway in finding their feet in the senior game and are showing great promise. The last game of the season before the break sees them head to Redingensians who are top of the league. Going into this last game they
are 9th in the league with 6 teams within contention for those coveted mid table places. Hopefully some good results in the New Year will see them maintain their position and give them some stability. The 2nd team have shown some great results recently with wins against Dorset Dockers and Sherborne 2nd’s. Turnout has been good with some of the U18’s moving up into senior rugby and making a good start. They are currently lying 3rd in the league. We are actively recruiting young players for U16, U17 and U18 age groups and so if you know someone who would like to give rugby a go, whether for the first time or a return after a period away from the game, send them along to one of the training sessions. Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm for U12- U16 and Tuesday evenings for U17 and U18. We are also looking for a coach interested in coaching girls rugby to enable us to restart a girls team at Bournemouth so if there is a coach out there willing and able to commit to coaching on a Sunday and one evening in the week, please pop along to the club on a Sunday morning and speak to one of the Committee who will be able to point you in the right direction. We would really like to get our girls team for u13 up and running by next September, funding is available for courses and full support will be given. Bournemouth Rugby Club would like to wish all of our supporters, players, parents, coaches and volunteers a Happy New Year. We are looking forward to 2015 and the fresh challenges that a new year will bring.

FITNESS FOCUS Percentages are very simple: 40% of carbs is your 2 fist sizes put together. 30% protein is your palm size. 30% fat is your thumb nail size. Notice I said your! This is because we are all individuals and cannot follow fad diet tips as they are not tailored to you. In each of the 3 main nutrients there are good and bad foods. Good carbohydrates: broccoli, mushrooms, leeks, onions, asparagus, cabbage, cauliflower. Bad carbohydrates: bread, pasta, spaghetti, jacket potato, banana. Good protein: chicken, turkey, fish, cottage cheese. Bad protein: beef, pork, ham, hard cheese. Good fats: almonds, olive oil, olives, avocado. Bad fats: butter, lard, dressings.
Let’s kick this New Year off with nutrition. Nutrition means ‘balance of nutrients the body needs’.
So, a good meal for me would be four stalks of broccoli, a salmon fillet and a sprinkle of olive oil. We need to keep our bodies topped up with fuel so ideally we should be looking at eating every 3-5 hours, little and often is the key. Now I know you’re looking at this and saying I read all sorts of information - how do I know this to be true? I have a lot of knowledge and experience in this industry, last year I spent 7 months on cruise ships lecturing about nutrition/ detox and how the body works. KEEP IT SIMPLE Carbohydrates - if it’s not natural don’t eat it (bread and pasta are not natural, they are manmade, banana is a sugar cane and it gives a high source of energy but trust me, unless you’re an elite athlete who trains for a living, you don’t need them.) Protein - anything with two legs or less - eat it. If it has two legs or more, it still is protein but there will be more of a higher fat cut on whatever you choose. Fats - stay with natural fats very simple.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year and didn’t over indulge too much! This time of year everyone starts their New Year’s resolutions and for many, it will be to lose weight so this month, I’m giving some of my advice and joined with your action, we can work towards making it happen.

Let’s kick this New Year off with nutrition. We have three main groups that we need to focus on; carbohydrates, protein and fats. 1. Carbohydrates give the body energy to function. 2. Protein aids growth and repair to our muscles. 3. Fats give us secondary energy storage and also helps protect our joints and organs.
The body is a machine and it needs the correct absorption of each nutrient. The perfect balance is: 40% carbohydrates 30% protein 30% fat This is per meal. I know you are now asking yourself, how do I know this and what are those percentages as everyone is different. It’s a proven fact by the ‘zone eating plan’ that this formula is clinically proven to reduce weight and most importantly, help sustain a healthier you and reduce illness.
The lives we all lead in this day and age are full of toxins. These are not good, in fact, in a big enough dose, toxins can kill you. In food, we have additives and preservatives. Both these toxins are full of harmful chemicals that we flood our bodies with daily and this stops our human metabolic system working (it doesn’t matter how far you run, how many classes you go to or how many weights you lift, if you don’t function correctly from the inside you’re wasting your time). 100 years ago, nutrition and detox meant nothing due to natural foods, but now, due to the lives we lead, we all have to understand it a lot more as everywhere we go and everything we do, we fill our body with toxins. I will talk more about this and food combining in the next issue. If you want to get in contact with me regarding training or nutrition, my number is 07881966471. Alternatively, you can find me on LinkedIn or Facebook under leisure analyst. 50% OFF training with me when you quote ‘THE GAME’. 10 x 1 hour personal training sessions, full nutrition plan, detoxification information and a health consultation for £300.

FOOTBALL
We’re speaking to local children and young people involved in different sports across the area to find out their motivation and ambition about taking part in the sports they love in our ‘One to watch’ feature. NAME: RYAN GLOVER AGE: 14 SPORT: FOOTBALL SCHOOL: AFC BOURNEMOUTH yan is a student at Harewood College and has always been a sports enthusiast. He comes from a sporting family with his dad having played semi-pro football and his step mother who represented Great Britain at cross country. Ryan has represented his college in the South West Championship Table Tennis finals and is the 200m County champion. Ryan Currently plays football For AFC Bournemouth playing a year above his age group. In his spare time he enjoys training at the gym and playing football with friends. Hi Ryan, tell us how you first got into football… I got into football because my dad used to play to quite a high level. The first team I joined was Green Fields, where we had an amazing set of players. Some of the other players have gone on to sign for premiership teams.
“I would love to stay at Bournemouth and play for the 1st team. The coaches have taught me so much and I really like the philosophy of the club”.
When did you start playing for AFC Bournemouth and what position do you play? I started at Bournemouth when I was 7, playing for the development centre, but it wasn’t until I was 11 that I joined the academy. I play as a forward, but am quite versatile and sometimes play centre or left midfield. Are you hoping to stay with AFC Bournemouth and work your way up through the ranks? I would love to stay at Bournemouth and play for the 1st team. The coaches have taught me so much and I really like the philosophy of the club. Joe Roach has taught me a lot about the game and the youth programme is really well structured What has been your highlight of your football career so far? My highlight would definitely be signing my contract on the pitch in front of a full crowd at half time during a 1st team match. Everyone was cheering and I gave a wave to the crowd. How often do you train at the club? I train twice a week including a ‘full day release’ which involves training, classroom work and technical sessions. On a Wednesday I have a strength and conditioning gym session with matches being played on a Sunday.
10
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
You captain the team at your school too. How does it feel to be leading the team? I love leading, so captaining the school team is something I really enjoy. Harewood College have a really talented school team and we have won the Town Cup every year. We are now playing in the English Schools’ competition, which involves over 600 teams. If we win our next match, we will be in the last 32 schools in the country. How do you balance your training with school work and studying? My school, Harewood College, allow me to go on day release each week, which gives me extra time to train and compete. I have a good relationship with the PE teachers, Head of House and Learning Coordinator who all help me keep up to date with my classwork. On day release, we are also given an hour in which we must do school work.
Are you a fan of AFCB and who is your current favourite player? Yes, I am. I’ve supported Bournemouth my whole life. Matt Ritchie is an excellent player and my favourite thing about him is his movement and ability to beat a player. What are your aims and goals for your football future? To become a professional footballer and work my way up the ranks. Sum up your sport in three words… Fast, challenging, enjoyable. Finally, what would you recommend to young people reading this who want to get into football? Join a local team, work hard, don’t get distracted by the things other people are doing now as you can do them when you’ve reached the top. Thank you for talking to us, Ryan and we wish you continued success for your future.

SURFING
This month, we speak to Zoe Carter who heads up the Dorset division of ‘not for profit’ surfing company, The Wave Project. Based in Bournemouth, Zoe works with young people to introduce them to surfing and help build confidence whilst learning a great sport which utilises our stunning coastline. Name Sport

Zoe Carter Surfing
Hi Zoe, thank you for talking to The Game Magazine. How did you first get into surfing and when? Hi, I first got into surfing when I was 29, so quite old. It was always something I wanted to do, however, I haven’t always lived by the sea so there was not always the opportunity and having children can take up time. It’s a sport/way of life that once you start you get hooked! What other sports do you enjoy? I have done a lot of running in the past and completed the London Marathon in 2010 and have run on/off throughout my life since a child. I come from a ‘cycling’ family where my dad was a national champion and competed against Victoria Pendleton as a child. I love Yoga too and would love to try some snow sports in the future. You run the Dorset division of The Wave Project, can you tell our readers a little bit about the company, who can benefit and what you do? The Wave Project is a ‘not for profit’ (soon to be a charity!) organisation which uses surfing as a therapeutic activity to engage children and young people with a mental health needs or who are at risk of whether is low self -esteem and low self-confidence, ADHD, Autistic, depression, early psychosis and mood disorders. It also includes children in care or has social services involvement, young carers and children who have been bereaved. We offer a ‘free’ 6 week surf course which has been funded by NHS, National Lottery and private donors and made possible with our awesome volunteers…. which is amazing! We use surfing as an engagement tool, all young people have a 1:1 surf mentor, build selfesteem, self-confidence, social inclusion while having lots of fun and of course ‘surfing’. After they have completed the courses they can join our surf club which continues the good work. …and what does your role involve? I originally set up the Wave Project in Dorset in 2013, with a pilot which was funded by the NHS. Since then, I have been running The Wave Project alongside my full time job in CAMHS. Seeking funding, networking with other referral agencies, working closely with surf school, co-ordinating and recruiting volunteers. Arranging and co-ordinating the sessions which includes jumping in the water! I am now funded by the NHS and seconded from my CAMHS job one day a week to run the NHS side of the project. It’s very exciting having NHS involvement as it’s a first for the NHS to use surfing as a form of treatment for children and young people…and it works! Within our National Lottery funding we were able to employ someone to run the project, so looking forward to ‘Nico’ joining the team in January.
How does surfing help the emotional health in young people? There is something special about being in the sea; there is lots of evidence around surfing and emotional/mental health and other projects running all round the world. Surfing breaks down boundaries, it’s so much fun and pretty ‘cool’ to tell friends and family. There is also evidence regarding children with a diagnosis of Autism and how being in water can help with senses. One of the best surfers in the world has Asperger’s ‘Clay Marzo’. Most surfers will say it’s not just a sport but often a way of life!
The Wave Project was born in Cornwall and now has centres around Great Britain, what are the plans for expansion and growth in the future? Well, this will be the first year that The Wave Project in Dorset will be fully funded in regards to courses so it will be exciting to see where this takes us…we have lots of exciting ideas! We are setting up a project in South Devon this year which is covered in our National Lottery funding. The Wave Project has got new projects setting up in Brighton and at the Wave garden in Bristol in 2015. We will be developing on other projects that had pilots last year including, Isle of Wight, Wales, Scotland and London. It would be awesome to have Wave Project projects all around the UK. We are also building links with other places around Europe and have been involved in a project in Europe looking at using outside activities to improve the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged young people. It must be incredibly rewarding to see young people mastering the sport and having fun... It’s brilliant, words cannot explain. When you have a young person who can’t even put on a wetsuit, talk to you or go in the water… going on to catching a wave and smiling and laughing. It fills my heart
with joy and I am proud of every single young person. The difficulties that they overcome in such a short time are amazing! Some of the young people are better than me now, I hope that it is something they can be proud of, have memories that last a life time, good friends and when things get bad, they can grab a surf-board instead of destructive behaviour.
“WE USE SURFING AS AN ENGAGEMENT TOOL, ALL YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE A 1:1 SURF MENTOR, BUILD SELF-ESTEEM, SELF CONFIDENCE, SOCIAL INCLUSION WHILE HAVING LOTS OF FUN AND OR COURSE, SURFING”.
Where are some of your favourite spots you’ve surfed? I have a campervan, so this year I went with my two sons around France and Spain and surfed some awesome places. One of my favourite sports was Lacanau Ocean in south west France and Zarautz in North Spain. However, my heart does belong in Cornwall and I love Crantock! Describe how you feel when you’re having a good session in perfect conditions? It’s such a good buzz and even better than having a good surf myself. Everyone is so happy including volunteers and the young people. Seeing the children getting wave after wave, in the sun in our beautiful coastline is brilliant…..sessions like that makes all the hard work worthwhile! What would you recommend to people reading this who might want to give surfing a go? A really good way is to contact a surf school and book a lesson and they will go through the basics with you, after that is to hire for a bit with some mates. There is lots of surfing weekends or surf clubs to get involved with. …and finally, how can people get in touch with The Wave Project? We are always looking for people to volunteer at all of our projects throughout the UK and to help us fundraise for our surf club and to maximise the amount of children and young people we can reach with the project. Check out our website for more info www.waveproject.co.uk or email myself at zoe@waveproject.co.uk or nico@waveproject.co.uk
SPORTS MEDIA
WE’RE SPEAKING TO LOCAL WOMEN INVOLVED IN DIFFERENT SPORTS AND SPORTS RELATED BUSINESSES ACROSS THE AREA TO FIND OUT ABOUT THEIR MOTIVATION, PASSION AND DRIVE FOR THEIR WORK AND THEIR GAME.
MAIN: KELLY FRONTS A LOT OF THE CLUB’S VIDEOS, IN PARTICULAR THE MATCHDAY VIDEO ON THE BIG SCREEN. LEFT: INTERVIEWING RYAN FRASER FOR A PROGRAMME FEATURE. Name: Kelly Somers Broadcast & Multimedia Executive, AFC Bournemouth This month we speak to Kelly Somers, Broadcast & Multimedia Executive at AFC Bournemouth. We talk about her netball playing, her love for two football teams and we ask what it’s like working at our Championship club, AFC Bournemouth. Hi Kelly, thank you for talking to us. Tell us about your role at AFC Bournemouth… I have been at AFC Bournemouth for two years but I grew up in Watford and moved here because of the job. I joined two weeks before Eddie Howe’s return to the club in October 2012 - and the only disappointing thing for me is only now do I realise how huge his return was for the club and what it meant to everyone connected with it. We’re a three man team, myself, Alex and Max. We split all the work between us and if Max, our Head of Media is off, Alex and I take on his responsibilities. The main part of my job is creating content for the club’s various channels but we also deal with press calls and looking after external press requests, and act on behalf of the players to protect them and the image and brand of the club. Everything you see come out of AFC Bournemouth, pretty much, comes from us three! We’re one of the smaller teams in the Championship but it’s a great club and we all pull together. I also present for the club’s video channels and big screen which is the thing I enjoy doing most! 14
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Who is the biggest star you’ve interviewed? In the build up to Liverpool I interviewed Adam Lallana and Jamie Redknapp and in the build up to Real Madrid, I interviewed Harry Redknapp. We sometimes interview opposition players and I interviewed the England under 20s manager, Aidy Boothroyd. You also work on football podcast, ‘The Offside Rule’…tell us about what your involvement is with this? I got taken on at the beginning of this year. I work really closely with big broadcasters like Hayley McQueen, Kait Borsay and Lynsey Hooper. They are the kind of people that I have looked up to from a young age and they are flying the flag for women in journalism. I saw the role advertised on Twitter and went for it. I manage the Facebook page and I’m in charge of the YouTube channel, managing all of the content. We did a live ‘pubcast’ in London recently which was great and streamed a live YouTube podcast from Wembley in August 2014. You play netball and apart from football, are you involved with any other sports or hobbies? I go through phases of joining the gym but it’s so hard with working the long hours that I do! I like team games. I’m a very competitive person and at school, I took part in everything and played netball at county level. I now play with AFC Bournemouth photographer, Amy Maidment at David English. I do it socially and it makes me feel
so much better after I’ve played. I can be sat behind a desk for long periods of the day so it’s good to get some exercise. The other thing is that my job is also my hobby; I watch a lot of football, both for my job and as my main hobby so it’s nice to have a release with my netball. We know that you’re a close fan of Watford as well as AFC Bournemouth, when did your following of Watford start? Watford is where my love of football began and I love being a supporter of the club. My whole family is from Watford, my nan’s brother used to play for them so I grew up following them. I won the Young Sports Journalist of the Year award run by a local paper, and went in the press box there for a day so it was where the start of my career began too. Every week, I want Eddie and the boys to do so well and I never thought I would have developed such a strong affinity for another club as I have for AFC Bournemouth. I am an employee of AFC Bournemouth and therefore a huge supporter, but I am also a lifelong Watford fanatic. The good thing is as I am talking to you now, both clubs are doing quite well so right now it’s doubly good for me! It’s been a cracking start to the season, what are your thoughts and predictions for the remainder of this campaign? I love Eddie’s approach; we don’t get too high when we win and we don’t get too low when we lose.
I genuinely think we could get promoted, if not this season then in the near future. I’ve never seen a group of individuals so together and hungry for something. The players are all really nice lads and they’re a great group. You can never predict anything in this league but what we have done in the last two years is truly remarkable. If we don’t get promoted, it’s not the end of the world and I think Bournemouth supporters realise that. Finally, what are your career hopes for the future and what advice would you give to others who want to look at this kind of career? Do it. It may not be the most lucrative industry to go into, but I can’t tell you the enjoyment I get from my work. I get such a buzz from what I do. I moved 110 miles away from home to do this, so I don’t see my friends very often - and a lot of them definitely don’t understand my job and why I love it so much! It’s a tough industry to get into but the rewards are quite incredible. Personally, I want to get more in front of the camera which I am starting to do here, but right now, I’m just really enjoying being part of this clubs amazing journey. I’ve been very fortunate that the club has done so well in the time I’ve been here. It’s a fantastic job and I love it. Thank you Kelly and we wish you all the best with your future. Fat isn’t always the bad guy.
WEST HANTS
By Mark Daley
Unfortunately the mainstream establishment spent years ‘educating us’ that fat was the reason we were getting more and more obese, getting more heart disease and becoming type 2 diabetics. And yet the less fat we ate the more pro-inflammatory diseases we got. Why? Because we replaced fat with processed carbohydrates like cereals, pasta, bread and fruit juices, not to mention the cakes and other carb rich sweet stuff. The three macronutrients are Fats, Carbohydrates, and Proteins. There are essential fats, and essential proteins (amino acids); there are no essential carbohydrates. That means we can’t live without fats and protein. We can however live without carbs, and probably healthily if we are not involved in endurance style exercise regularly. Fat is the macronutrient that is the most easily processed by the body. Meaning it requires the least energy to break down – a process called thermic effect of food. However things aren’t that simple and not all fats are created equally. Scientific studies show that the body processes the assorted types of fat differently. The body does not store essential fatty acids (EFA’s) such as Omega 3’s found in fish and flaxseeds as fat in the body. The body uses these fats to make hormones and other chemical reactions that ultimately raise your body’s energy expenditure leading you to actually burn more calories
than you would otherwise. Omega 3 fats also increase insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Studies show that it’s not just EFA’s that don’t get stored as body fat, there are two other fats that have incredible health benefits. The first being Monosaturated fat like the type found in nuts, avocados and olive oil which doesn’t appear to increase fat levels either. Technically if you eat energy you will gain weight but this is unlikely because fat is very filling and when added to a low carb diet it is difficult to over eat to the point you gain body fat, and most of us have heard of the massive heart health benefits the Mediterranean diet with its high Olive oil content brings. The second is Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) found in Coconut oil which has been shown to promote health, aid brain function and improve body composition. MCT’s don’t enter the cholesterol cycle in the body even though it is 92% saturated fat, it won’t elevate cholesterol levels. Make sure that the coconut oil is ‘Virgin’ and not partially hydrogenated. It’s great to cook with at high temperatures and can even be added to coffee or smoothies as flavouring. If you are an athlete or take your exercise seriously and do not want to lose weight you should add carbohydrates after your exercise to replenish your muscle carbohydrate stores and speed recovery.

“WE CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT FATS AND PROTEIN, WE CAN HOWEVER LIVE WITHOUT CARBS, AND PROBABLY HEALTHILY IF WE ARE NOT INVOLVED IN ENDURANCE STYLE EXERCISE REGULARLY”. Final notes on healthy fats: • Use Olive oil raw on food like salads. • Include seeds, nuts and avocados to your diet. • Use butter from organic grass fed cows; avoid margarines and other highly processed hydrogenated spreads. • Eat oily fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel regularly, and/or supplement with a good quality omega 3 fish oil or Krill oil. • Avoid vegetable oils like Sunflower, Corn, Canola and Soy. They are highly processed and are treated with chemicals. These oils are also easily destroyed by oxidation which is damaging to our bodies. Organic Virgin Coconut oil/butter is a far better option to cook with.

Glen Knight BJJ
This month, we’re talking to local BJJ 3 striped white belt, Glen Knight, about how he used his sport to get fit, get active and get motivated to improve his health and lifestyle. Hi Glen, thanks for talking to us. When did you decide you wanted to get involved with sport and what made you choose BJJ ? I started training 3 years ago. I met up with some old school friends that I hadn’t seen for a while and they had already started training in MMA and they all commented on how much weight I had gained (17 stone), so I decided to give it a go. I found it very hard to begin with as I was overweight and unfit, I did MMA for 18 months and then decided to give BJJ a go as it’s more technical.
Have you had many injuries? Yes! In the beginning I used to get lots of muscle strains and bruises to my face but as you progress, you become conditioned and more flexible and your body learns to cope with it.
Where do you train? Ippon Gym, Bournemouth
What would you say to others reading this who may be thinking about giving BJJ a go? BJJ is very difficult in the beginning; the belts and stripes don’t come easily. Unlike other martial arts, you really have to earn them as there are only 5 belts in BJJ to gain. But, it’s a great workout and probably the most diverse martial art out there which is constantly evolving with new moves and techniques.
Can you tell us what your training sessions involve? In the mornings, I do a 10 minute stretch and warm up, 30 minute technique and then 20 minutes rolling. In the evenings, I do a 10 minute stretch and warm up, 1 hour on technique and 50 minutes rolling. Are you training towards anything in particular at / the moment? I am focusing and working hard towards competing in 2015 and receiving my blue belt. Tell us about how your sport has changed your health and lifestyle and what are some of the fitness benefits of doing BJJ I feel a lot fitter and healthier in myself. I have lost nearly 3 stone and my lifestyle is a lot better. Plus, I have the benefits of learning a martial art.

What are your sports and fitness plans for the future? I’m just now looking to progress my skills in my sport and keep earning my belts and stripes and to keep learning.
Finally, sum up your sport in three words… Technique, roll, repeat. Thanks for talking to us Glen and we wish you all the best with gaining your next belt. For more infomation on using bjj to get fit visit:

FOOTBALL
SEASON UPDATE AND NEWS We are competing on 4 fronts at the moment. Unfortunately our last two fixtures have been called off due to the weather which has led to a backlog. Currently we are in the quarter finals of three cups and sitting joint top of the league on goal difference. We play our home games at Highcliffe Rec on Sunday Mornings – Kick off is 10.30am
‘My Team’ is our monthly feature where we like to shout about local teams from across the area. Any sport, any age, anywhere… get involved and #SupportLocal. TEAM NAME: Priory Quays FC EST: 2003 MANAGER: Christopher Grimes CO-MANAGER: Derek Broome
ABOUT Priory Quays journey began in 2003 after we had spent 1 year playing under the name of New Inn United. The idea for the club was formulated over a few pints of beer in the New Inn (now a block of flats) in Christchurch by Chris Grimes, Dave Bartlett and Dan Bartlett. After a fairly successful start in Division 10 of the Bournemouth Hayward Sunday League, we changed our name and were promoted into Division 8 and thus Priory Quays was born! We started life as a relatively well-oiled machine plying our trade at Christchurch Rec and with a team boasting Sunday League legends such as Dangerous Dave, Jacko and Rotter. We drifted along nicely until the stewardship of Scot Macfarlane started – Scot was a Priory legend who had played for us for several years in a range of positions. Under his leadership Priory gained 5 promotions and won 2 League titles (Division 7 – Captained by Chris Grimes and Division 3-Captained by Oli Peckham) as well as reaching the Semi Final of the coveted Hampshire Cup. Scot led Priory all the way to the Hayward Sunday Bournemouth Premiership in 2011 which is an amazing achievement considering the club had been formed less than 10 years earlier. After one season in the Premiership, Scot left for

London and Priory were taken over by Derek Broome and the start of another journey began. Before the start of the 2013-2014 Priory’s local rivals folded and we managed to acquire all of their star players including current players Kev Brennan, Dan Brennan, Rob Hepple, Garry Hepple and Chris Forbes. Mid-way through the season, Derek was joined by another Priory playing legend, Chris Grimes as co-manager. At the end of that season Priory made the semi-final of two cups and had managed to reach the final of the highly coveted Hampshire Cup. The final was a derby between two Christchurch clubs which was played at Hurn Bridge in front of a raucous crowd. Priory opened the scoring in the first half through Kev Brennan only for the game to finish in a 1-1 draw. After 30 tense minutes of extra time, Priory won 3-2 on penalties and became the first club from Christchurch to win the Hampshire Cup. Prior to this season we have again been able to attract top talent to join the side and have added Max Crow, Lee Clark, Manny Ohamaje, Chris Burdon, Dave Midgley and Stuart Ellis to an already strong side. We have got this season off to a flyer winning 11 of our 12 games, this includes defeating the current back-to-back league champions and winners of 5 trophies last season away 4-1 – a side who were previously undefeated in the league for 17 months. The club are currently in the chase for 4 trophies and have a real chance of winning all 4, times are good at Priory we have a great squad and a great team spirit – the future is bright! Special mentions to Billy Mackey and Dan Bartlett – Club legends, both at veteran stage but still involved and to our official club mascot Jimmy Grimes, always on the side-line enjoying his beers! I’d also like to say a massive thanks to club chairman and founder Dave Bartlett and also to our co manager Derek Broome . Without you guys this club would grind to a halt!
The Clown – Ryan ‘Ryno’ O Reilly – Total Joker, unbelievably funny and one of the best left foots you will ever see on a Sunday League pitch! Best Tekkers – who has the skills to pay the bills? Max Crow – unbelievable dribbler with great skills and an eye for the spectacular! The lightweight – who’s first to let the side down? Elliot Broome – Always injured and moaning! And the star of an infamous incident involving a bar, urine and a bucket. Mr Vain – who absolutely rates themselves? Our captain Kev “Brennando” Brennan – Currently sporting a Zlatan Ibrahimovic style haircut featuring hair bands! Dave Midgley – partial to lots of pink clothing and drives a white Audi with a personalised plate! Who’s the glory hunter? Stuart Ellis – Seeks constant praise for everything he does –even tying his shoelaces!
Biggest liability on and off the pitch? Off the pitch Max Crow– always into some sort of shenanigans - On the pitch Ryan is always one tackle away from a red card! Worst Dress Sense – who needs to update their threads? Oli Peckham - I think he gets his fashion tips from Joey Essex! The team social spot – where is your designated club house after a game? We all head to Blushh in Christchurch, they started sponsoring us at the beginning of the season. Most of the lads drink in there anyway as it’s the best venue in Christchurch and they do great food and cocktails! Who is the hard man of the team? Dan Brennan – Suffered a horrendous broken leg and was back playing within 6 months – Still flying into tackles without a care in the world! Who’s the longest in the shower? Most of our lads don’t know what a shower is so unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to tell you!

STRENGTH
TACTICS FOR REACHING YOUR GOALS WITH EXERFORMANCE Through experience of working with young athletes, rugby teams, busy executives, and stressed-out parents, we’ve found that you need a set of strategies to train consistently, but also efficiently and effectively. Use the tactics below to prepare both mentally and physically for every training session—and reach your health and performance goals in 2015:
Find a compelling reason to train Why are you training? Make this specific and real; eg. Do you want to be selected for the First Team, run a half marathon for charity, lose weight to have more energy, complete a Tough Mudder challenge? They’re all great goals, and so when you’re facing a hard set of reps or the weather’s lousy and your motivation is low, you can draw on that reason to get you through it. Paint this picture, and it will compel you to train.
Set precise and vivid goals Achieving small goals leads to long-term success. Maybe your first small goal is to simply get yourself to the gym or workout outside. Do it, then work from there. Sets and reps, the weight you lift, or the time you spend doing interval training can all become goals. Turn these markers into specific goals and cross them off your list one by one. Step by step success will motivate and keep you focused on manageable tasks, so you can reach your larger-scale goals that much sooner.
6 7 8
Train with a friend
You won’t let each other down! Even if you can’t train together the whole time or every day, you’re developing a level of accountability from another dedicated person. Challenge each other to stay consistent and motivated.
Share your goals!
Getting a partner involved significantly improves your chance of success. Better still, take up a sport or activity together. A study by Indiana University researchers found that married people who are active with their spouse stand a 94 % chance of sticking with their exercise programme. In contrast, 43% of married people who go it alone end up failing.
Make the time in your diary Simple - Your workout time is personal time. You know you need it and can’t miss it, so schedule it.
Are you sitting down for this? Good, then you already know you need to MOVE MORE every day. An hour in the gym and 10 at a desk is NOT an active lifestyle. You need to start enhancing your workouts by choosing the stairs, walking more, and just being generally more active. Move more all day and you’ll find you have more energy for your training, which will give you more energy to move more, and so on.
Rest, recover, repeat
One of the main reasons people skip their workout is because it hurts. If you’re super sore from doing something you probably won’t go back, right? That’s why it’s important to include recovery in your training plan. If you like recording your habits, like sets and reps or meals, try writing down your recovery routines. Think of it as an investment in your next workout and you’ll feel fresh for your next session.
ACHIEVING SMALL GOALS LEADS TO LONG-TERM SUCCESS
9 10
Publicise your goals
Mix it up
Keep expectations reasonable
Here’s a good reason for using Twitter and Facebook tell your friends what you want to achieve, and let them know how you’re doing along the way. Write about the workout you did today (did push-ups, squats and 10 pull-ups!) or the meals you make for dinner. This sets up a level of expectation from people who want the best for you.
Your body needs variety, and so does your mind it’s about keeping your mind and nervous system stimulated.
Manage expectations—your own, that is! We know it’s challenging to squeeze a workout into a schedule that’s full so – don’t be hard on yourself! We all miss a workout every now and then, and it’s not always a bad thing— your body needs time to recover from stressful days.

This month, we speak to up and coming youth boxer, Ollie ‘Bomber’ Bulawin about how he started out in his sport, his training at John Hart’s gym, Boscombe Youth ABC and what his ambitions are for his future. Hi Ollie, tell us how you first got into boxing and how long you’ve been doing it… I started boxing when I was 11. My step-dad introduced me to it and I’ve had 15 bouts so far with 10 wins. I train at Boscombe Youth ABC with my trainer, John Hart. Do you take part in any other sports? I used play football but I took up my boxing seriously to continue and eventually turn pro so I am now completely focused on achieving this. I also used to do athletics and was a top sprinter for Dorset but I’m now solely concentrating on my boxing. Tell us about your wins so far and which one stands out... I’ve had 15 bouts with 10 wins. My hardest was my second bout in Brighton as I didn’t have that much experience. He came out to put me out in the first round, I got two counts and carried on but lost on a split decision. I learnt a lot from this to carry forward to future bouts. How often do you train and where? I’m a Boscombe Youth Boxer based at Hart’s Gym – I train 7 days a week in and out of the gym. We train hard and smart, it’s a lifestyle for me. We plan our work, then work our plan depending on what unpaid work is coming my way. That will change when I’m pro. I’m not fresh from Fantasy Island, I know I have a lot of learning to do and there are some very talented game boys out there in the mix. I want to box them all when I’m ready, it’s all about improving and staying on top of your game. How do you balance your training with school work and studying? I come here straight after school from 3pm – 5.30pm and then do my school work as soon as I get home. It makes it easier to come straight here after school. My friends are behind me and some want to get into the sport too. If I box locally, they’ll come and support me which is great and my family are always there. What do you like to do in your spare time? Spare time is family time. My mum and sister are top priority and when they are sorted, my spare time is my business. What has been the best highlight so far? The best experience I’ve had so far was when I went over to Ireland for the first time with my trainer, John. We went to the Holy Trinity Boxing Club for 4 days and I met some good boys, that was a great experience.

Is boxing a good sport to improve fitness and strength? Yes, definitely. We have some fantastic circuit training sessions at our gym, top bag/pad workouts plus weights and cardio sessions with nutrition and diet programs…check us out. What are your aims and goals for your sporting future? I’m now training for the Junior ABA event which takes place in March so I would like to win that and get into the Junior England squad so I can represent the country at National championships. Sum up your sport in three words… Important, complex and unique. Finally, what would you recommend to young people reading this who want try boxing? Come to our gym - four shows every season, full size ring, ABA registered, top training/coaching facilities and more. when I come out of the studio after a lesson? No way! I feel shattered and I sleep like a log at night. Will I continue with Bikram yoga? Defin itely. Apart from the obvious benefits that I am seeing in my physical mobility som ething that going to the gym did not achieve, I also love the camaraderie that is present at BYB. From the moment you open the door , the front of house, whether it be Suzy or Amber that greets you, you are treated with such a lovely warm smile and greeting. That is the same at 6.00am in the morning or 6.00pm in the evening and everyone in the class is equally engaging… so why would I not want to continue? Contrast this with the gym. After you walk past the reception you are on your own and no-one really speaks unless you engage with them. Of course, there are also the teachers at BYB. Each and every one of them is differ ent but they are all lovely all equally very com petent and engaging. We are all encourag ed to try our best but not forced or cajoled into doing something that the body is not capa ble of doing unlike being in a fitness class and going for the ‘burn’ those of us who strug gle are
gently reminded of the correct post ure to aim for without being made to feel stupid or incapable. Is Bikram the be all and end all of fitness? Not in my opinion. I do still feel the need to partake in other forms of exerc ise including core muscle strength and fitness but, Bikram yoga really plays a large part of both mental and physical health and main tenance, I see that to be the case for the fores eeable future. I even lost 8lbs in weight main ly from around my waist. Thank you Amber and Suzy for prov iding such a lovely venue that offers so muc h it is a pleasure to join in. I wish you continued success for I often recommend your Bikram studio to many folk that I come into contact with. My only question is, “How long is even tually?” The teachers all say - “Keep going....un til eventually your whole spine will lay flat on the floor”. NOW THAT…. would be LOVELY.

recruitment
We have experienced, over the last several years, a challenging business climate across both the UK along with our European counterparts. Some industries have suffered more than others with some, unfortunately, reducing staff levels to survive through the tougher years of this recent business recession. However, on a much brighter note, unemployment numbers are now at an all-time low in the South West with employers being far more optimistic with their businesses plans. LOOKING FOR NEW JOB HAS NEVER BEEN SO APPEALING IN THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE! If you are a JOB SEEKER, SOS recruitment’s experienced teams will ensure they seek YOU the very best OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE! This is your chance to improve your overall package, not just from a renumeration perspective but to ensure job satisfaction overall. Being happy and positive within your job role will ultimately make going to work a pleasure, almost half of our lives are spent at work! MAKING AN IMPRESSION WITH YOUR CV Take a comprehensive read through your CV, if you were someone reading it, does it read well? Would you consider seeing ‘YOU’ based on your CV? Plan how you want your CV to look, both content and layout will catch the eye of a potential employer, remember not to waffle, be concise and precise with employment dates in reverse order with your most recent employment first. A ‘Personal Profile’ at the beginning of a CV can be extremely powerful, again, though be truthful – always remember the content of your CV will be used, often or not, during an interview. ALWAYS spell and grammar check your CV and keep the length ideally to 2 pages at most 3 pages. Your one and only opportunity to be considered for a role may be entirely based on the first initial read of your CV. PLAN AND RESEARCH YOUR OPTIONS SOS Recruitment are experts at assisting you with planning your career; with their comprehensive experience and consultative service, ensuring your feel listened to, valued and supported throughout your job, search is key to the ultimate success in finding the very best ‘job fit’ for you as an individual taking into consideration such elements as job satisfaction, lifestyle factors and long-term career aspirations. Remember to be open-minded, flexible and patient – it may take a few job applications/interviews before you feel that you’ve found your dream job! PRESENTING THE BEST OF ‘YOU’ It is an old ‘cliché’ but extremely true, ‘first impressions do count’! How you present yourself both physically and verbally can and will make a ‘huge impact’ on a potential employer’s impression of you. The way in which you dress, shake someones hand and speak are just a few of the key traits to be aware of when attending an interview for example or perhaps even making a phone call to a potential employer – do not mumble on the phone and do not use slang! Remember to wear business attire, clean shoes and nails, minimal jewellery and make-up – it’s a job interview not a fashion show. Interviewers will normally ask whether you have any questions and may ask for referees details, therefore have these to hand when asked. DO NOT talk over an interviewer, give clear, truthful answers and again do not waffle with your answers. When the interview draws to a close thank them and leave a lasting impression. If you really do want the role – DO NOT feel afraid to tell them this in a polite and professional manner. FANCY A CAREER AS A RECRUITMENT CONSULTANT? Recruitment is not glamourous or for the ‘faint hearted’ – it’s an extremely busy industry juggling several tasks and achieving the desired results is just part of a normal day! Recruitment is for the most part, without doubt, a hugely satisfying and challenging career and yes, it is a career! The Management team are all testament to this having all started out as extremely successful recruitment consultants working their way up the ‘career ladder’ to their present positions. Their common personality traits are quite simple, they

have extremely hardworking and dedicated personalities, they love people, they have high expectations of themselves and those they manage; achieving second best does not come into their vocabulary! All of these individuals have developed their careers over the years by going ‘the extra mile’ – they love what they do and continue to do so. SOS Recruitment is seeking individuals who are driven, focused and love being challenged! Full training and ongoing coaching and development will be provided along with an attractive salary/ commission and benefits package. In fact, if you can multi-task, love business development and can build strong relationships this may be the perfect job for YOU! Becoming a successful Recruitment Consultant brings hugely satisfying rewards from both a monetary and job satisfaction perspective. It is a proven fact that the most driven and tenacious individuals in this business would describe it as ‘running their own business’ but with all the tools and resources provided. No two days are ever the same! SOS’s most successful consultants work tirelessly to achieve their personal goals and ensure ultimate success! FIND YOUR DREAM CAREER WITH SOS RECRUITMENT In 1999 Julie Cook Hughes took the brave move to open her own recruitment business at the tender age of 25! With limited investment but plenty of passion and enthusiasm, she opened her first office in central Bournemouth. Julie’s previous background as a Recruitment Consultant managing an extremely busy Temporary Division for a Corporate brand gave her a firm ‘fountain of recruitment knowledge’ and she learnt how to maximise business opportunities through high service levels, reliability and honesty with both her clients and candidates. A TRULY WINNING COMBINATION! Today, SOS recruitment employs over 25 staff across three dedicated divisions, Commercial, Workforce and Care with almost 500 temporary staff out working and 100’s of candidates placed in permanent roles in commercial, industrial, Engineering and Care roles. Retaining and looking after staff, ensuring they feel worthy and valued in the workplace creates a happy working environment which results in productive and successful teams who strive to smash their targets and further their career development within the business. Furthermore, Julie continues to be the ‘driving force’ behind the business ensuring the ongoing success, injecting capital investment when required, providing up-to-date IT functionality and a professional working environment. To her absolute credit, with an extremely busy schedule both work and personal, she ensures that she still actively has her ‘finger on the pulse’ with a close involvement in the daily running of the business with her teams. Her inspirational and forward thinking manner is contagious; she also ensures that she regularly listens to her staffs’ ideas and initiatives. Julie has some extremely exciting plans for the future of the business, ‘Top Secret’ at the moment, but all will be revealed during the latter part of 2015. There has never been a better time to join the SOS recruitment ship – it’s no cruise liner – more like a speedboat – exciting, challenging and a most satisfying place to work! A consistently successful business is based on a strong foundation of key personnel who work to common and consistent ‘GOALS’ to ensure the desired results are achieved. ASCESIS: MEET YOUR BUSINESS GOALS ountless businesses have spent unnecessary time, effort and money building a completely separate site for mobile-browsing. This can lead to all sorts of problems with cost, functionality, and the continuity of branding and features. Responsive design means that you won’t need to worry whether a visitor views your site through their PC, their tablet or their smartphone, because from the very beginning, these considerations are worked into the design. All the websites we build at Ascesis are responsive as standard.

At Ascesis, we use what is known as the Agile Sprint Method. This means that we split the project up into different sprints. At the end of each sprint, the client has something they can expect to receive and give feedback on. If they are happy with the result, we move on to the next sprint, until a satisfactory product has been produced. A project isn’t made-up of a set amount of sprints. We simply sprint based on the size and scope of the project, and continue this sprint-tofeedback loop, until we have achieved a Minimal Viable Product that the client is happy with.
We offer completely free consultations to all of our clients whether or not you decide to pursue our services. Harry and Jo had a go at Footgolf last month and enjoyed the fun and competitive activity at Playgolf Bournemouth. This month, as it was a little chilly, we sent Jo to try out slacklining with the guys from Maverick Slacklines at their indoor base, The Project Climbing Centre in Poole Dolphin Centre.
Find out more > www.facebook.com/maverickslacklines Hi Jo, you and Harry had a good time trying the Footgolf course last month…any plans to get out on the green again soon? It was great fun and we really enjoyed it. We’re thinking about having a team day at the course again, early spring…just need to wait for the weather to warm up a little bit! We’ve booked you in for a session with the guys from Maverick Slacklines to give the popular outdoors and indoors activity, slacklining a go. How is your balance?! I used to have great balance back in my ballet days but I’m not sure how it will be when walking across the line! I’m hoping it isn’t too high so I don’t have too far to fall! AFTER That looked a lot of fun and we all managed to have a go too… how did you find it? That was one of the most addictive things I’ve done in a long time – I loved it! I literally came off at the beginning after one step but after 34
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
some time and some expert advice, I managed to walk out to the centre of the line. Brilliant fun! Describe the set up and what you have to do… The slackline is tensioned between two anchor points and luckily, not too high. The line I was on was 10m long. You have to step onto the line which is 2 inches wide and use your balance and quite a bit of focus to walk to the other side. Lloyd, who is a slacklining pro, showed me what to do and how to use your arms and legs to counterbalance when you feel like you’re going to fall. I used his arm to help me balance and walk to the other side and then tried it without him there. It looked like a lot of concentration was needed… Yes, just a bit! I was focused on the other side and tried not to look down. I felt a bit like a monkey because you have to wave your arms around to keep re-balancing yourself and to stop you from falling. The falling wasn’t that bad though. They had a great set up with padded mats to land on and it wasn’t that far to fall. Lucky for me
as I lost count of how many times I came off! How it is good for you physically? You are continually balancing and adjusting your central balance point so this is incredibly good for core strength, something I need to build having had two children. It’s great for co-ordination, concentration and flexibility and I could actually feel my muscles working hard to keep me on the line and it was like you have a continuous workout. Some people even do Yoga on the lines! What were your instructors like? Lloyd and Sam were both so friendly and supportive, especially when I kept falling off! They helped steady me when I was walking across the line and gave me some great advice and tips to get me that little bit further. I was so shocked when they said it’s only £1 to go
and use the Maverick facilities on a Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9pm and it’s in a great location next to the climbing walls so it was really interesting to watch that too. It felt sociable and friendly straight away and I can definitely see myself going back there. Can anyone try slacklining? Yes, there were children there and people of all ages and abilities can enjoy trying it out. James and Emily, my son and daughter had a little go and loved it. It’s something that makes you smile as soon as you try it and it was great to watch them have that competitive edge to try and beat each other with how far they walked along the line. Thank you to Sam, Lloyd and Maverick for a great session. Look out next month for another ‘Have a go hero’ challenge.
Raising the Roof
T he first ever B M W 2 S eries C onvertible A laid-back look and compact proportions: the first ever BMW 2 Series Convertible launches at Ridgeway Bournemouth on 28th February 2015. Assertive design language with short overhangs, powerful contours and a muscular rear reflect a powerful confidence. And the Luxury model, Sport model and M Sport model as well as a comprehensive range of Genuine
DESIGN
Inspired by summer: With the softtop open, the front of the BMW 2 Series Convertible looks even more confident, with athletic-looking shoulders and a more muscularlooking rear. Even with the roof closed, its dynamic contours and sporty proportions make it a real head-turner. And with the optional contrast-colour soft-top its most striking feature can come to the fore: throwing caution to the wind and awakening the senses. And guaranteeing maximum driving pleasure. Shaping the future: With its dynamically contoured, forwardslanting bonnet and headlights tapered directly towards the kidney grille, the BMW 2 Series Convertible has a strong ‘facial expression’. The focus of its attention? The road, of course. From the side, the flat shoulder line running parallel to the ground gives the vehicle an elongated presence. Together with the long wheelbase, wide track and short overhangs, its agile, extroverted personality comes to life. The roll-over bars are invisible, appearing only in emergencies and within a fraction of a second.
Interior
The interior of the BMW 2 Series Convertible delights with a beautifully composed feeling of space. All the operating elements are orientated towards the driver, and exclusive features such as chrome trim exude a premium look and feel. The surfaces and edges blend seamlessly into one another, enhancing the light, flowing sensation inside. When viewed with the soft-top open, the wraparound door and side trims as well as the cover of the stowed away soft-top create the impression of a boat deck. Especially eye-catching is the multilayered design of the material and its striking colour combinations. The result is the feeling of a modern convertible, which when combined with the optional sport seats ensure unadulterated driving thrills. This experience is rounded off by the rear loudspeakers, discreetly integrated into the side panelling. Top-class sound. Maximum driving pleasure. And all the freedom of the wind.
BMW Accessories add some extra dimensions to its character. The BMW M235i is even more scintillating. With its M Performance TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder petrol engine, it unleashes the racier side of the BMW 2 Series Convertible and takes driving pleasure to a whole new level.
Lights
On a dark road, the double round headlights really stand out – not only because of brilliant-White LED technology, but also because of top-quality details like the slightly inward-turning Chrome brace. The new shape is tapered directly towards the kidney grille, giving the BMW 2 Series Convertible a strong ‘facial expression’. And the Xenon option provides three-dimensional elements in the headlight tubes to intensify this effect.
Soft Top
Whether in Black or Brown, both with silver effect or Anthracite, the contrast-colour, electric softtop of the BMW 2 Series Convertible ensures a trendy, urban appearance. It also greatly reduces noise from outside. And demonstrates exactly what spontaneity means: Even at vehicle speeds of up to 50 km/h, it opens and closes fully automatically. Meaning there’s no limit as far as your driving pleasure is concerned, whatever the weather.
Viewed from the rear, the lights of the BMW 2 Series Convertible immediately catch the eye with their unique design echoing the car’s style. Clearly divided light bars ensure a glowing presence in the dark, and the typical L-shape is unmistakeably BMW, even when viewed from a distance.
From the rear and even when viewed from a distance, the BMW 2 Series Convertible seems even wider and more muscular thanks to the familiar BMW L-shaped lights. When studied up close, the chrome-plated twin tailpipes and low centre of gravity immediately catch the eye. And when the soft-top is open, you can enjoy an unimpaired view from the rear right through to the windscreen. In short: open-air driving pleasure, any way you look at it.

Fletch’s Predictions
Well, once again we find ourselves saying ‘What a great month’ for AFC Bournemouth. The wins just keep coming…how good does it feel to be a part of AFC Bournemouth right now? Like everyone who works here at the club, I feel very honoured and proud. Looking back from when I came here in ‘92 to where we are now, it’s astronomical to be in the position we’re in. But, we’re very level headed here, from the management right at the top, to all the players and staff and we are keeping our feet on the ground. No one is getting carried away. It’s a cliché in football but we’re just taking each game as it comes. We’re at the right end of the table which is where we want to be. We seem to be scoring from all over the pitch at the moment. How important is it that other positions pop up with goals rather than relying on the strikers all the time? It’s massively important. Your strikers can keep scoring but if you’re getting opportunities from the defenders and midfield, it takes the weight and burden off the strikers themselves. It’s superb to think that we’re not just scoring goals but creating chances for everyone in the team. Our passing involves every player, we’re not direct and we pass our way through teams creating and looking for opportunities to score. This isn’t just something that happens overnight. We do a lot of training with midfielders and defenders having shooting practise and it’s nice to see it all come together on the pitch following all those hours spent in training. 38
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
We are now in the January transfer window and a few of the team will no doubt be on the wish list of some Premiership clubs, do you think we’ll be able to keep hold of the squad? I can’t really comment either way, but I hope we do. The position we’re in and the quality of players we have, will draw attention from other teams. Only the Chairman and the Chief Executive will know our position and you’re going to have players that are sought after like any club would have when you’re at the right end of the league. Things are a little different at the club nowadays compared to how they used to be and hopefully we can keep hold of all our players. From my position in the Recruitment Department, we need to make sure we are ready for any scenario - not just if we were to lose players but to add to the squad as well if it arises. …and do you see any additions coming into the squad? We have to just make sure in the Recruitment Department that if the Gaffer comes to us, we will be ready and have players to put his way. Other things have to be considered of course within that but we have to make sure that when we’re called upon, we can provide him with players that are capable of coming into our squad and making us a better all round team. It’s not easy because we’re playing really well and when you’re playing well, it’s the hardest thing to recruit - trying to find players that are as good as or better than you already have isn’t that easy. It makes our job a lot harder in the Recruitment Department!
We kick off the new year with another busy month of games… what are your thoughts ahead of the fixtures this month? Rotherham v AFCB (FA Cup) Tough fixture. When you’re in the FA Cup, you always hope for a home draw. Unfortunately we didn’t get that and we’ve got to travel up north to Rotherham then again in the league not long after that. It will be a tough game. The manager, Steve Evans will have his players ready for a fight. I believe it’s a game we can win, it’ll be tough and we’ll have to be at our best to beat them but I think we’re more than capable of getting a result and getting into round 4. AFCB v Norwich City Big fixture for us with a big team. Norwich was in the Premiership last season and they’re a big team in our division. They’re one of the favourites to go up this season and rightly so - they’ve got a fantastic squad of players. It will be a tough game and again, we’ll need to be at our best to give ourselves an opportunity but the way we’re playing at home and the chances we create, I think it will go in our favour, but it will be tight. Rotherham v AFCB Back up to Rotherham for the league fixture which will be totally different to the Cup game. Anyone who can go to Rotherham and come away with a victory this season will have done really well. We know what we’re going to get from the Rotherham side and when you’re up near the top of the league, everyone raises their game to play against you but I think we can come away with a win. Leeds v AFCB Another tough game again back up north in Yorkshire. It’s a tough place to go, Elland Road and following the game earlier in the season, I’m sure our boys will be up for it and once again, I think it will be a tight affair. It’s a great place to play but we will have a hostile crowd and we’ll have to deal with that. You can sink or swim at these places and I think our team have thrived on going to the big stadiums this season. No-one wants to be beaten twice by the same team in the season and I’m sure that won’t happen. AFCB v Watford They’ve had a great start to the season and have picked up form of late. We played them live on TV and we should have come away with a victory but ended up drawing so I think we can go one better this time. It will be a very tough fixture but I think we can beat them and victory will be ours.

FLETCH
We pick a question for Fletch to answer each month direct from the fans…
Via @FatBlerk on Twitter – What is the best striking partnership you’ve had and what is your favourite cheese?! From a success point of view, I think everyone knows, the season we had Jermain Defoe at the club was a great high point for us. He went on to break the record of scoring 10 league goals in a row and we struck up a very good partnership, however, my favourite partnership of all time was with James Hayter. I spent a few years with James and he was very selfless. He did a lot of the hard work for me. I never once had to turn around and ask him to do something; he had already thought about it before I had! As i’m a big lad, it was nice to have someone to help share the hard work. We had a great partnership and we’re good friends off the pitch which makes a difference. My favourite cheese is French Brie with some nice red grapes!
