PIRATES AIM TO MAKE IT
The roar of speedway bikes will resonate once again in the heart of Poole this month as the POOLE READYPOWER PIRATES return for another season of speed in the SKY Sports Elite League. hen the Pirates embark on their 68th season of racing at Poole Stadium on March 25th it will be another big challenge for Britain’s top Speedway club. They will be aiming to be the first club to achieve three successive league title wins since Belle Vue, Manchester achieved it as far back as 1972. The campaign opens with a stern test for the Pirates’ new class of 2015 as opposition comes in the form of an Elite Shield head- tohead between the Pirates and their rivals for the top spot in 2014, the King’s Lynn Stars, to get the season underway. The contest, over two legs, will decide the first piece of silverware for the new year and will conclude the following night in Norfolk. “The Stars will come to Poole with plenty to prove” says club Boss Matt Ford. “Last year, they were dominant throughout the season leading into the play-offs but they suffered some cruel luck and faltered at the final hurdle with the Pirates managing to overhaul them in the final reckoning.” Whilst the Pirates have been forced into a number of changes to their line up due to the rules that require teambuilding to a maximum strength, King’s Lynn have made just one change to their successful formula making it a bold opening fixture.
As we went to press Ford was still awaiting news regarding the future of last year’s number one and captain, Darcy Ward. The Aussie Ace had been suspended from all racing after failing an alcohol test before a World Championship round in August last year. The full penalty was still unknown as disciplinary hearings had been inconclusive and the Pirates have been waiting on an all clear for him to start the new season. In addition ongoing visa problems that have beset all British clubs have been threatening to affect the arrival of their other Australian star, 2012 World Champion, Chris Holder. “It has been a complete headache over the last few months”, admits Ford. “It has distracted us a bit from the fact that we are going for our third league title in a row which would be a massive achievement and we have assembled a team, all being well, that can pull off such a remarkable feat! We have last year’s rider of the year, Kyle Newman returning as well as hopefully our two Australian ‘Turbo Twins’ getting back together. We have recalled Dave Watt after a couple of seasons on loan and he is fired up ready to sparkle again on home shale. Plus we will be introducing three new faces to Dorset who I already know are eager to carry the pirate pride and do justice to our famous skull and crossbones.” Despite a winter full of challenges, Ford is eager to get started on the latest campaign. He can’t wait for that familiar roar and for the smell of methanol in the air around Poole Stadium. It’s a recipe that has pulled in the fans for every one of those 67 years that have gone before but never has the hopes of Britain’s top speedway club been so high as to aim for their triple crown in as many years and make it three out of three in 2015.
“Every year we are pushed into making team changes, it’s the nature of our sport. Our success during the year means that our side usually finishes the season with a total average combination above what is allowed by the rules for the following year. It’s ironic that our success on the one hand can be our undoing on the other. This winter has been particularly difficult as there have been a few factors beyond our control which have delayed our decision making process beyond anything we have experienced before.”

THE LIONS’ LEADERS Bournemouth Rugby Club are making some changes in culture and structure, going back to basics, and enjoying the game and the camaraderie. We really want to embrace the ‘One Club’ ethos that we started back at the beginning of the season. All three of our First team coaches have played for Bournemouth’s First XV and have all played this season, including Craig with a cameo appearance in the game against Chard where we played with a limited team due to the rescheduled game. Dan Connolly joined the club in January 2011 after playing three seasons in the Welsh Premiership for Bridgend and Pontypool. Dan was looking to play competitive rugby and with Bournemouth playing the highest standard in Dorset, after a few trial training sessions, he was welcomed into the Bournemouth family. After spending the last season supporting his son’s U7’s and U6’s sessions, Dan has joined the coaching staff as backs coach. Dan brings a wealth of experience with a Sports Science BSc and his playing career which includes representing a number of select 7’s teams and Wales 7’s. Craig White has a wealth of experience having started his rugby career in South Africa where he played western province and border U19’s then played for the University of Cape Town from 1997 to 2001. During that period, he played for Stomers and Western province U21’s. Craig will be working with the forwards using his experience in being a prop, mainly tight head. Craig came to Bournemouth in 2001 and has been here ever since. Tim Collier has played at the highest levels of English rugby having played for England U21’s, Worcester and Harlequins
and brings a depth of playing experience to coaching the senior squad. The club is introducing a ‘Coaching Pathway’ which will ensure that future coaches for the senior level progress through the community and development levels and in many cases will have come up either through the age group coaching processes or as past senior players. We also have a referee assessor within the club and so will begin to offer referee courses in the near future. This will start with training some of our older players, U16’s and Colts to referee for the mini age groups, enabling a whole club liaison to develop. Several Colts and First team players are already helping with coaching the mini and youth age groups. Colts will become an integral part of the development squad and will form the basis of future first team squads; this week (at time of print) saw Hamish Renwick and Sam Knott making their starting debuts and Sam scored his first senior try in the game against Bracknell. Several important events are coming up for Bournemouth Rugby, The Youth tournament is on Saturday 28th March and the Mini tournament on Sunday 29th March will be a very busy couple of days with up to 5,000 people onsite over the weekend. Sunday 3rd May will see Bournemouth host a casino night at the Marriott Highcliffe Hotel; tickets will cost £20 and will include a disco and MARCH 2015 BOURNEMOUTH RFC FIXTURES buffet. Our love for hot drinks nowadays is bigger than ever, it’s time all you coffee lovers learn why it’s time to avoid coffee. My name is Ryan Potter. I have been in the health and fitness industry for over 20 years. During this time I have I have represented Team GB in Rugby 7s and Squash, I have been a national personal trainer for many years and trained hundreds of people from the general public, athletes and celebrities all with different aims from losing weight, sports specific, rehabilitation, strength and conditioning and generally changing themselves to be a new person. Coffee is a narcotic beverage and the caffeine in coffee belongs to the same alkaloid group as morphine, cocaine and strychnine. The caffeine combines with your stomach and hydrochloric acid forms caffeine hydrochloride. As this toxin absorbs into your portal circulation and hits your liver, bile is released in attempt to flush it from your system; this is why people feel an increase in bowel regularity when they drink coffee. De-caffeinated coffee is not better for you than regular coffee as they both contain a large concentration of trichloroethylene, a potent carcinogen primarily used as a degreasing agent in the metal industry and as a solvent in the dry cleaning industry. Deadly pesticides are regularly used on coffee plants in Columbia and amongst them are several that have been banned in the USA (aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane and heptachlor). Some speculate that coffee is the most significant source of toxins in our nutrition intake today.
EXHAUSTED ADRENAL GLANDS
ACID IMBALANCE
Caffeine is a nervous system stimulant; it causes adrenal glands to secrete adrenaline (adrenaline is the hormone that your body depends on during emergencies to elevate the heart rate increase respiration and blood pressure for ‘fight or flight’ response.) When coffee is over used, the adrenal glands can become exhausted. If the caffeine sensitivity has diminished and more and more coffee is required to get the buzz effect, the adrenals will show signs of exhaustion.
Over 208 acids are present in coffee which contributes to indigestion and a wide variety of health problems including arthritis, rheumatic problems, allergies, skin irritation and general inflammation throughout the body. Coffee breaks down into a by-product called uric acid. This is known to burden the kidneys contributing to kidney stones and gout. Many people experience a burning sensation when drinking coffee because it stimulates hyper secretions of the hydrochloric acid in our stomach.
BLOOD SUGAR SWINGS MINERAL DEPLETION Caffeine forces the liver to release glycogen into the blood stream and the pancreas responds to the sudden increase in blood sugar by releasing insulin, the hormone which causes excess carbohydrates to be stored as fat. Within an hour or so, the result is a sharp drop in blood sugar which creates hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar. That is when another coffee seems like a good idea but then the process is repeated all over again.
Regular coffee intake inhabits vitamins and minerals from being properly absorbed into the small intestine. Coffee causes unnecessary excretion of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and trace minerals into the urine. All these minerals are essential to good health. Are you sure you would like another coffee?!
HIGHER CHOLESTEROL • Nitrosamines are found in coffee, this is a naturally occurring carcinogen.
• Chlorgenic acid is found in coffee and has been linked to toxic side effects of the liver.

I CHARLIE, CAN YOU TELL US WHEN YOU FIRST EVER TRIED SKIING AND HOW OLD YOU WERE? I had my first skiing lesson at Snowtrax in 2007 when I was 3 years old. My parents took me every week for lessons and when I was 5, I was invited to join the Race Club. WHAT GOT YOU INTO SKIING, ARE YOUR FAMILY KEEN SKIERS? We went to Italy for Christmas with friends and my parents decided that we would all learn to ski as it looked so much fun. My sister, Jessica, also races and my mum and dad are very keen skiers. ARE YOU A RACER OR FREESTYLE? I do like freestyle but I prefer to race. I had my first snow race in Les Houches, France in January 2014 which I really enjoyed. I came second in the dual slalom in the Anglo Scottish Cup. YOU RECENTLY SKIED IN A COMPETITION IN ITALY (ENGLISH ALPINE CHAMPIONSHIPS- BORMIO); TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU GOT ON… Unfortunately, we had to cancel the trip to Italy as a family member was ill. However, we will be going next February to compete in the English Alpine Championships. WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE SKI RESORT? I like Les Carroz in the Grand Massif. It was the first resort we ever skied and the one we go to the most.
IT’S REALLY EXHILARATING! IT MAKES YOU WANT TO DO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN CAN YOU DESCRIBE HOW IT FEELS WHEN YOU’RE RACING DOWNHILL? It’s really exhilarating! It makes you want to do it over and over again especially when you have a really good run.
FINALLY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE WANTING TO GET INTO SKIING? It’s a great sport and good fun to learn. It’s really worth having lessons and getting lots of practise.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU GET TO SKI ON SNOW? We go twice a year on holiday. We spend some days race training and the rest of the time skiing with family and friends.

DO YOU TRAIN ON THE DRY SLOPES? Yes, I train twice a week with my race club, Team Snowtrax, Christchurch. I have been a member since I was 5 years old. We travel and compete at other dry slopes within the Southern Region and take part in the Tri Region in Wellyn Garden City. We also compete in Club National races where you race against other regions within England. DO YOU TAKE PART IN ANY OTHER SPORTS? Yes, I like playing football for the Harewood school team. I also enjoy Badminton and table tennis. WHAT ARE YOU TRAINING FOR NEXT AND WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES AND GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? I am training for the summer dry slope series which begins in April. We compete in six races in the Southern region and score points based on your results and the overall winner is announced at the last race of the season. We have a very strong team of racers at Snowtrax. I am also hoping to train at Hemel Hempstead on the artificial snow which will help me prepare for next winter’s Alpine races. I want to keep training and maybe one day compete at a high level.

Lifting weights will help to build muscle, which, in turn, speeds up your metabolism. This means that you are then able to burn fat quicker.

The Game talks to Gordon Fontaine, Bournemouth based local turned international star of surfing, about the surf scene on the south coast....
NAME Gordon Fontaine SPORT Surfing SPONSORS The Green Wave, Quiver Surfboards, Wavetribe, Rapanui, C-skins, GreenFix hanks for talking to us, Gordon... what got you into surfing? That’s no worries at all. My dad was a full on windsurfer when we were kids and so we were in and around the sea all the time. When not windsurfing, my two brothers and I would be playing in the waves with bodyboards. One time when I was about 8 or 9, we went down to Tarifa (South of Spain) on a windsurfing holiday. When we got there, there was no wind so we decided to hire surfboards from the local watersports school and that’s where it all started. We all fell in love with it straight away and started getting lessons when we got back to France. From then on, we started competing locally, then regionally then nationally and we basically just fed off each other’s stoke and competitiveness the whole time…15 years later we’re still at it!

What do you love about it the best? Wow, that’s a tough question. There are so many things I love about surfing; it kind of can’t be explained in one answer. But to sum it up, I guess it’s the sensation of freedom you feel when you’re out there. It just really takes you away from the day to day life. The ocean’s endless supply of waves, the feeling of the water gliding through your fingers, the speed you can generate from just riding this liquid form of energy, being a part of the elements whether it be the cold, the warmth, the wildlife and/or the scenery, all are contributing factors to why surfing for me is the best thing in the world. The other thing is when you come out of the water after a good session, you feel like a better person. And that impacts your outlook on life, how you treat other people, and your ability to tackle all sorts of challenges in life. Did I mention I loved surfing? Haha. Tell us a bit about your surfing history... I started surfing properly when I was 9. I took part in my first competition at the age of 10, took one wave, scored a 10/10 and won the
whole thing. From then on I was hooked. There was a really good crew back then where I grew up in Brittany, France and we all fed off each other’s enthusiasm and stoke, especially between us three brothers. Gradually, I started competing in bigger events, and as we were doing well on a national level we picked up sponsorship quite early on. At age 14, I was living the dream, competing in all the European junior events and doing well. ...and about some of your biggest competitions... In 2008, after spending some time away studying in Australia, I won my first WQS event at age 19. The WQS stands for World Qualifying Series, so it was an international event. That felt awesome. Are you taking part in the UK Pro Tour this year? Yeah, I will be. I’ve been competing on that tour for about 4 years now. I came overall second twice in a row in my first two years, so I really want to try and take the title some day.
What’s your favourite surfing hot spot in the surrounding area? Well…there are a number of good spots around, but if I told you…Haha! Let’s say, exploring is a big part of the surfing experience, and there’s a lot to explore between the Isle of Wight and Dorchester, wouldn’t want to be a kill joy! …and your favourite hangout place? There’s a few cool places in town, I particularly like Boscanova in Boscombe, the space is really rad and the food is amazing. I’d highly recommend. You’ve recently launched an online shop selling organic clothing and surfing equipment, can you tell us a bit about it? I launched The Green Wave in November 2014 as I felt the industry lacked a real outlet for sustainable options in surfing. I’ve been really into trying to live a healthier and more responsible lifestyle for the past few years and actually studied the topic as part of my final year dissertation at Bournemouth University. Turns out a lot of surfers are the same, and there’s a lot being done in terms of activism, cleaning the beaches, improving water quality etc, but there was nothing out there tackling the subject of consumerism in surfing. When you think about it, most products are made in China, using non-recyclable plastics or petroleum based materials, and will eventually end up polluting the planet and our oceans in particular. That’s where The Green Wave comes in. Most surfers are open to eco-friendly alternatives, as long as design and performance are not affected, and it’s my job to provide people with high quality surf gear that won’t cost the earth (literally).
The past two years have been trickier as I was studying for my Marketing degree so wasn’t always able to attend the events or train. Now I have successfully graduated, so I want to give it a good go in 2015. I’ve been on my bike a lot more and trying to surf as much as possible, so we’ll see how it goes. You are currently coaching as well and competing, tell us about that and what it’s like to pass on your knowledge and skills… When I grew up, we had a really good training programme in place to help us reach our potential, and I really value the importance of that now. When I moved to Bournemouth there was nothing like it here, and I could see some of the groms struggling to get any better on their own, so I decided to put my experience to good use and help them out a little. The lessons are quite sporadic, as surfing in the Bournemouth area is not something you can do every Saturday morning for example, but we try and get out as much as possible. For the past three years I’ve also been running a summer camp in France, where I take
some of those youngsters for a whole week of surfing on the sandy beaches of Brittany. We’ve had some great times and I hope to do that again in the future. What do you think of the surf locally in Bournemouth? As I said earlier, surfing in Bournemouth is quite sporadic. We only get waves when big swells hit the channel, and that happens mostly in the winter. That said, when the waves are here, it can be a great area for surfing. Last winter we pretty much had waves 3 days out of 5 from November to March. It was great. There’s also a great vibe down here on the South Coast. The local surfers know how to appreciate the little we get and it often makes for a great atmosphere in the water. Do you use a surf report to check out conditions? There are a number of reports available yes, MagicSeaweed or Windguru are probably the best for the forecast and then you have a few webcams available too which is great.
What would you recommend to someone reading this who wants to get into surfing this year? Go for it! I’d possibly recommend going down to Cornwall in the summer months, where the water’s quite warm and the waves nice and friendly. The Extreme Academy at Watergate Bay has got great enthusiastic instructors and will get you stoked. Remember that the ocean is an incredible thing, and that it’s also much stronger than you are, so don’t do anything stupid... stay safe. One last thing, keep the beaches clean by picking up the litter behind you. It’ll pay you back one day! Finally, you’ve travelled and surfed all around the world, do you have a place that is at the top of the list? That’s another tough question, each place is unique in its own way and I appreciate all of them equally, but if we were going to judge on quality of the waves only, I’d say the Mentawaii Islands in Indonesia would have to be up there… PHOTOGRAPHY: RICKY BEDDING

TECHNICALLY WIRED AND UN-WIRED! here is a time and place to use your devices and it is a proven fact many billions of people have now become obsessively addicted to their various devices – feeling almost nervous and somewhat lost without them! I know you will agree our technology has moved on leaps and bounds over the years, it has been highly beneficial to our economy over recent decades and the overall success of our various businesses. Before technology was the norm in recruitment, the only gadget we had was a traditional phone – not even a hands free! Old style recruiters were not blessed with computers and mobile phones– how did we manage, you ask? We did, and businesses were successful then too, the human element of speaking to each other existed more so than today for sure! It is fair to say though that we hugely appreciate the technology we now have at our fingertips! BENEFITS OF BEING TECHNICALLY WIRED Interviewing Candidates Face to Face and On-Line Technology has been a huge contributor to the enhanced success of so many businesses, especially the recruitment industry. On-line recruitment for candidates and clients is now key in the 21st Century however; the personal element of ‘people’ must not be forgotten. There is a place for email and phone communication. Set Up Tech Free Zones Work and Home It is just as important to have tech free zones at work as well as home. Remember bosses have their eyes and ears everywhere within their businesses, read your Code of Conduct at work and ensure you are adhering
to policies regarding when you can use your mobile phone, utilise your computer to access social media sites etc. These sites can be highly addictive and time consuming and businesses have proven statistics of lost productivity levels whereby staff have spent hours as such ‘surfing the net’ rather than doing their ‘day job’! Remember not following company policies can result in a disciplinary or at worst being sacked.
LOOKING AFTER YOUR WELL BEING How many times have you seen someone walking down the street and almost bump into someone or something? More than once, I expect and I would imagine 9 out of 10 times they were holding some kind of device and not concentrating on where they were walking! The same applies when driving, the number of serious accidents caused when using a mobile phone whilst driving is on the increase and unnecessary lives are lost. I am sure we have all read the possible harmful effects of technology; many years ago using ‘filter’ screens on computers alleviated and improve individual’s ability to look at computer screens, specialised keyboards to lessen likelihood of RSI. Realistically, be careful when using technology and keep up with the latest media coverage as to how to use it sensibly and put time limits for instance, on ‘screen time’ with your children and even yourselves and seek out new methods of using gadgets whereby you can reduce your health risks Remembering the memories before our devices took us over! ON/OFF SWITCH! Unlike humans, ‘devices’ have an on/ off switch and we must discipline ourselves to turn our devices off and spend quality time with both our family and friends. This also applies to turning mobile phones off whilst at work or placing them on silent. Talk to your work colleagues, having conversations via email can be a huge distraction and irritate your Managers too.

ROME TO HOME We welcome back Tony Bernard, Managing Director of The Steve Bernard Foundation to find out about a huge challenge the Foundation have set themselves…1400 miles from ‘Rome to Home’ in 2 weeks. We also get an update on some of the great projects that the Foundation has been involved with over the last 6 months.

SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER MMXV
The Steve Bernard Foundation was set up in memory of the affectionately named ‘Stevie B’ following his tragic passing in a car accident in November 2005. Since the foundation was formed in February 2006, it has gone on to raise over £200,000 for sporting projects based across Bournemouth, the south coast and third world countries. To date, the foundation has supported more than 200 projects covering more than 20 sports and 4 continents. Hi Tony, Thanks for talking to us and welcome back to The Game. How is the training going for this huge feat? It started well but I got man-flu earlier this year so was out of action for a while! I’m back on it now and stepping it up but, there is a lot to do. We have 7 months to go before we spend 13 days cycling 1400 miles encountering various mountain ranges. We’ve been told it’s the equivalent of doing a marathon and a half a day with the energy required and time in the saddle! We’ll be in the saddle anything between 8 - 11 hours each day with some climbs 8 – 10 miles continuously uphill.
“WE’VE BEEN TOLD IT’S THE EQUIVALENT OF DOING A MARATHON AND A HALF A DAY” This is your biggest ever fundraiser, can you tell us a bit more about the challenge and who is taking part? There are 21 of us doing the bike ride. Everyone has paid their own way so all money raised is going straight into the Foundation and projects we support. We aren’t doing 18

it in shifts; we’re all riding the whole lot. The all male team ranges from age 22 to myself being the oldest at 58. We have a female rider as a reserve who will step in if there are any injuries. We also have one physio coming out with us and two drivers. Training is in the early stages at the moment. We go out on Sundays and ride up to 50 miles. Personally, I’m going out every other day in the week and doing 12-15 miles to start building it up but it’s tough in this weather! The training will peak around July and then ease off slightly before we leave for the challenge. What are you looking to raise from this challenge? We will be supporting all our projects within the Foundation. We don’t give hard targets to people for amounts to raise. We’ve said for the team to try to aim for around £1000 but it it’s not the end of the world if that isn’t met. Each individual rider is fundraising and getting sponsored by friends and family and we’re also doing extra events to help towards the end amount. Why such a big challenge? We’ve done lots of great events and fundraisers over the years; beach walks, three peaks…but, for people to pay attention when you’re asking for money, you need to do something extreme. It also makes the media take notice and helps to raise awareness. The idea came from one of the guys who came on one of our bike rides as a mechanic. He is semi pro bike rider and suggested that we should take on a big challenge like ‘Rome to Home’. Craig Mathie, our Events Director and I spoke about it and we agreed to go for it. The logistics and planning has been huge. We’ve secured mechanical backup from Primera who we have a great relationship with and the Hendy Group is giving us a van to take out. We’re all volunteers and every penny that is donated or raised goes to the Foundation to directly benefit the projects we’re working with. This November also marks the 10th anniversary of Steve’s passing so we wanted to do something that really pushes us to the hilt.

Each rider has their own bike but with the sponsors coming on board, it helps pay towards the cycling shirts and other kit that we need for the challenge. On a wet Sunday morning in February, we met with a new local team who are changing the face of disabled sports in Dorset and making history with the birth of the county’s first ever wheelchair rugby team, The Dorset Destroyers. Every Sunday, the new squad meet for two hours of training at The Junction, Broadstone to work on building their skill, speed and stamina in this fast-paced, high energy sport. We chatted with creators of the new team, Nick and Sue Coombs and asked them about the excitement and stress of setting up a new sports initiative and their big aims for their new club this year… Hi Nick and Sue. Firstly, huge congratulations on the recent launch of the team, when did it officially start? 1st Feb 2015 was our very first training session and official launch. This was the result of months and months of work which started early in 2014. The planning and procedures of doing something like this are somewhat colossal! Talk us through the process and did you ever have moments when you thought you wanted to turn back? It started off with Nick playing wheelchair basketball and not finding it competitive enough. He’d seen wheelchair rugby on the TV and played for a bit in hospital back in the 1990s, but after watching it again during the Paralympics, he thought this would be a great sport to get involved with. The only problem was that the nearest club was an 80 mile round trip. Two years after the Paralympics, in early 2014, Nick just asked Sue and Paul (Sutherland) about setting up our own club and the rest, as they say, is history. We never wanted to turn back, but there were moments at 3am when Nick was doing applications for funding, which were quite stressful to say the least and it was a very intensive learning curve!

Nick, can you tell us a bit about your history? Medically, since I was 9, I’ve had 43 operations, both kneecaps removed and not replaced, bones shaved, cartilages removed, hands/shoulders/hips all operated on. I used to play lots of sports when I was growing up in Barnet, Hertfordshire with my friends. I was a great fan of riding my racing bike and cycled for a club in Barnet for about 3 years. I played with the Saracens RFC for a few weeks (they were looking at getting an under 16’s team together). But I ended up breaking my leg, which is a common theme that has affected my life since I was 9. Numerous operations have been done to my legs my knee cap was removed and not replaced. 10 years later, the other knee cap was removed. My family; Sue, my wife and my children, Jenny and Tom literally helped pick me up and got me back on my feet and have been incredibly strong whilst I’ve been in and out of hospital (43 times). My sporting life finished in 1994…or so I thought. It took me until 2013 to face the fact that I was disabled (I tried fighting every inch of the way to not have to use a wheelchair, as it’s not the most convenient of things to try and get around town) but I went to Slade’s Farm in July 2013 and met Terry Dennis and I tried out Wessex Accessible Cycling’s bikes, which just set my world on fire. Then two weeks later at the Legacy games in Poole Park, I tried playing Wheelchair Basketball and started to play every Friday night. My love affair with sport came back. Not long after this time, I started thinking and talking about setting up a wheelchair rugby team, something that would be completely new for wheelchair users to get involved with in Dorset. Who is who within the new team? Nick is Chairman and Mechanic. Sue is Club Secretary/ Fundraising/Referee. Paul is Club Captain. John Colgan, Philip Porter, Michelle Watson and Feriha Hassan are committee members. Luke White is our Head Coach and is an ex Team-GB player, who has played in some prestigious events. We also have Nathan Potter who is training to be a referee and a superb group of supporters, without whom the club would really struggle. Now the team has officially started, how do you see the club evolving? We have recently had to start a waiting list due to our great success, so we are concentrating on applying for funding and fundraising for more rugby wheelchairs, which cost £2,600 each plus spares – about £3,000 in total. In the future, we’d like to start a youth team for under 16s, so that it would become a feeder club. Even though we are a recreational club, we are aiming to build a league team as well. Wheelchair Rugby has inspired the players and some want to train as coaches. Being part of The Dorset Destroyers has given team members confidence to go out there and do more in the community. The chairs must be a huge cost alone, not to mention all the administration, coaching costs and other commitments, how have you managed with fundraising? Luckily Sue has an expansive history in fundraising, raising around £25,000 for various charities, including talent shows (one at the Lighthouse), a naked calendar, abseiling, cake sales, Christmas fairs etc. For The Dorset Destroyers, we have held quiz nights, cake sales, a Santa Sleigh collection in conjunction with Poole Lions and we have many more ideas in the pipeline, including a James Bond themed Casino Night for later in the year.

Yes, and we are totally blown away by the kindness and loyalty people have shown to us. Nick has always said that he wanted this to be like a rugby club, where everyone is included and we have social events which friends and family members can get involved with. We currently have 18 players and only 9 wheelchairs, but they have been very patient about this and are willing to come along and train in their day chairs anyway. We wanted this club to be a huge part of peoples’ lives and be very heavily involved in the community and that has happened. If you want to get on the waiting list, you must be over 16 and have a physical impairment. What are the Destroyers’ aims for this year? Our main aim is to get more funding for wheelchairs and later in the year, take the club out and about to schools to show people what it’s all about. You’re clearly a team for all and we’ve seen lots of social activities on Facebook… why do you think this is important? The social aspect is almost as important as the playing to be honest. It builds friendships, confidence, inspires people, allows interaction with others and gives us a chance to just get together, have a drink, something to eat and have a good laugh with each other. How can people get involved and find out more about what you’re doing? As we have a waiting list, rather than discourage people, we invite them to come along and meet with the team, watch the game, have a few drinks after and get involved in the social side and if they fancy, the fundraising side too. A WORD FROM THE Before he starting his training session with the team, we caught up with captain, Paul Sutherland to find out how he feels the team is going and his thoughts about taking on other clubs in their first match. Hi Paul, can you tell us about your disability? I was born with Spina Bifida which means I’m paralysed from the waist down and am a permanent wheelchair user. How does it feel captaining the first wheelchair rugby team in Dorset? It’s a great honour. I’ve always been interested in various sports and when I was asked to do this, I didn’t hesitate. I had previously done wheelchair basketball and I hold various British records in wheelchair racing at Stoke Mandeville. What do you think you bring to the team as captain? I’m a natural motivator and am here to lead the team, constantly looking for opportunities for each player. In terms of playing, I am good with long throwing and my upper body has good strength. How is the training going and when do you expect to have your first match? It’s going really well; at the moment, we’re working a lot on tactics, upper body strength and ball control. We have an ex Team GB player coaching us who is a huge asset to the team. Some of the team haven’t even picked a ball up so we’re all at different levels. Do you think this new team will make a positive impact for disabled sports in Dorset? Without a shadow of a doubt. There are limited sports available for wheelchair users in Dorset so that is why we wanted to pursue this and we know from the feedback we’ve had so far and how it’s been received that this is going to be a huge success. The sport must require a lot of upper body strength and stamina, tell us about what your training involves… I go to the gym and practise my throwing. DEVELOP A WINNING MINDSET 5 TIPS TO SHOW YOU HOW Think of your mind like the gears of a bike. The gears operate your bike the same way that your mind drives your body. Your mind determines your focus, confidence, and ability to reach and exceed your goals. While you need the physical tools necessary to conquer the miles ahead, your mind will make or break you. Use these tips below to power your performance and develop a winning mindset. 1. Develop a plan Planning and sticking to your plan (both training and competition day) will give you the physical foundation needed to achieve your goals. Realistic goals and a tailored training plan will help build your confidence, which gives you the ‘I can do it’ mindset needed to win. Confidence comes from the belief that you can achieve your task, and training gives that to you. 2. Stay Positive Focusing on the negative won’t help you or your training partners. Stay positive. When we train people, we don’t talk about the negative. Surround yourself with positive people to keep from bringing you or others down. If you’re feeling negative, keep it to yourself. 3. Be adaptable You can’t control everything about a race or competition. Control what you can, but train to overcome obstacles, not succumb to them. As part of a healthy training plan, practice being adaptable. The goal is to keep your mind easy and not to panic. 4. Break it down Forget about winning and focus on breaking down the race. Each small goal will lead you to the bigger goal. “Keeping your focus on what you do every few minutes is often more effective than looking ahead to speed or outcome. If you’re endurance training, use this strategy to push through challenging sections where it’s easy to find your mind wandering. 5. Build your own ad campaign You’re constantly communicating with yourself and your mind is what you rely on. Why not think of it as an internal advertising campaign? Work on different slogans or sayings to push yourself through the tough spots while you’re training and focus on what motivates you—your family, your friends, the thrill of victory. Picture yourself celebrating. Perfect this strategy during training and it’ll be there to tap into when you most need it most during a race.

Last month, I talked about the ten general physical skills that, when optimised, create total fitness. These are Cardiovascular/Respiratory endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance and Accuracy. This month, I expand on the importance of strength and how and why getting stronger will not only make you fitter, but also healthier, leaner, and more resilient to injury. Strength or resistance training can come in many forms and becoming stronger will benefit any athlete (we’re ALL athletes remember) in many ways. • Stay in the game, whatever your game A strong body is a robust body. A robust body is much less likely to break on you. Resistance training will help to develop a strong core, strong legs, arms, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. On top of the strength advantage, these benefits will also help you to train longer, harder, move more effectively and recover more quickly. The more of this you do, the more you will reap the training effect. If you’ve ever been injured you’ll be more than aware of the frustration of being sidelined from activity, whether it be sporting or daily tasks. • The metabolic effect Running, cycling, swimming, all great calorie burners right? Well yes but, the burning stops pretty soon after you’ve mopped the sweat from your brow. These are fantastic exercises for cardiovascular/respiratory endurance but if you
follow an exercise programme that neglects any strength training you will be missing a huge calorie burning hack. We know that muscles burn calories, so it only makes sense that the more muscles we work, at an intensity that keeps the heart rate up, will burn more calories. The best movements to achieve this come in the form of compound (multi-joint), functional (a useful transfer to everyday activity) movements. At Westover CrossFit, you will learn how to safely and effectively move not just your body, but external objects including barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls and more, with the form, intensity and variation that will maximise total body strength and fat burning. With no local ice-rinks currently available, where do you do your training? When the Westover rink closed, I joined the Aldwych Speed Skating Club, since getting back into speed skating last summer, I’ve rejoined the club and we are based in Guildford, Surrey. With work and parenting commitments, I can only get to Guildford once a week to get some ice time. I train a lot off ice to keep my fitness up. Can you tell us about some of the wins you’ve had in Nottingham? I really only entered the British Championships in Nottingham for fun and so my son could see what mummy used to do! I raced in the master’s
Bournemouth is always busy, you can see how much children enjoy it and it doesn’t have to be a seasonal activity. …and do you think it would encourage people to get involved in your sport? Absolutely, having a local rink would make getting into any discipline of skating possible. if you don’t live locally to a rink and don’t have the means to travel, it’s just not achievable.

Do you take part in any other sports? Yes, I’m a keen runner, I have run the London Marathon 3 times and I took up cycling last year after getting a ballot place for Ride London.
“IT WASN’T LONG BEFORE I PESTERED MY PARENTS INTO BUYING ME MY FIRST PAIR OF SPEED SKATES, I LOVED THE SPEED AND EXCITEMENT OF SHORT TRACK”. This month, we’re speaking to Zoe Clark, locally based short track ice speed skater. Zoe has a son, Gabriel who is 6 years old. She works as a nurse, looking after people with cancer and blood disorders. She is also a qualified baby swimming instructor and work for Water Babies. Hi Zoe, thank you for talking to us. When did you start ice skating? I started skating at the Westover Ice Rink when I was about 8 years old, but only briefly; I started again when I was 14 and became really hooked. I raced until 1997, but then gave up when I started my nursing training. I put my skates back on for the first time last year, after the Westover reunion at the temporary ice rink at the BIC. That was it, hooked again! …and how did you develop an interest for speed skating? I was actually told off by one of the ice stewards for skating too fast during a general session; he was a speed skater and suggested I went along to the club at the Westover rink. I didn’t know much about short track at that point, but I went along and had a go in my hockey skates and it wasn’t long before I pestered my parents into buying me my first pair of speed skates, I loved the speed and excitement of short track.
category, which is for over 35’s, I’m 41. Men and women in this category race together, so I didn’t really expect to win any races, but I did win my 1000m final, beating two men and placed second in my other two finals....a very close second! I am stronger over the longer distances so I was really pleased to win my 1000 final, with 4 laps to go, I moved from third to first place and held on. it was a lot of fun. What level of fitness does your sport require and where do you keep fit currently? Short track is a very physically demanding sport, as well as being technical. You need strong legs and glutes, for which I do a lot of plyometric exercises, plus your back can take a pounding. You need to be cardio vascularly fit as well, as skaters race all distances from the 500m sprint to the 3000m.
Are you training for anything currently? I’m continuing to skate; I will race at a couple of domestic competitions this season. I’m also running the London Marathon again in April, so I’m training hard for that. I’m also hoping to take part in Ride London again in august. If anyone reading this is interested in finding out more about skating, where is a good place to look? Check out your most local rink for courses, speed skating clubs are welcoming to newcomers and run beginners courses to learn the basics. Gosport is the closest rink to offer ‘learn to speed skate’ courses. Thank you Zoe and we wish you all the best with your future.
How important do you think it is to have an ice rink available all year round in towns across the country? Skating is a great way to keep fit and its fun. Visiting Nottingham, I was amazed to see how busy the public sessions were, the facilities there are fantastic. As a parent, I’m all for making facilities like ice rinks easily available for children and families to enjoy. The temporary rink in

t’s not often that you come across somewhere with a delicious menu, plenty of locally sourced ingredients and a stunning location boasting panoramic views over Studland Bay and across to Poole Harbour and the miles of Bournemouth beach shoreline; but The Pig on the Beach ticks all the boxes and you’ll be hard-pushed to find somewhere better to take your mum for a Mothers’ Day treat. The venue is the Dorset-based feature of The Pig collection; The Pig (Brockenhurst), The Pig in the Wall (Southampton) and The Pig near Bath. The cliff-top setting in the grounds which were formerly home to The Manor Hotel offers a pleasing view of some of the best coastline in southern England. Visitors can enjoy the enthralling visuals from the gardens; within which fresh growing ingredients can be seen in small allotments, a satisfying sight ahead of beginning your meal. The interior of The Pig on the Beach is presented in a stylish and natural, yet polished fashion; the existing stonework doorways and supports mixed with a chic conservatory area where visitors can dine within sight of the scenic views. One of the most welcome qualities of the hotel is the atmosphere; whilst the service and dining experience are suitably formal, there is a confident, relaxed vibe which is complimented by the genuine and excellent ambience. During your entire visit to The Pig on the Beach, you are guaranteed to feel welllooked after and catered for, without fail. After marvelling at the surrounding area and the building itself, the menu provides the diner with a selection of starters, platters, mains, specials and desserts, along with an extensive wine list of choice accompanying white, red, rose, sparkling and champagne. For those who seek a choice of select dishes from the local area, the 25 mile menu will prove a delight. A wide range of locally sourced ingredients, such as; Dorset Oysters, Phil Samways Pork, and Sopley
Farm fruits and vegetables among many others, are used to create palette-pleasing dishes. During The Game’s visit, we enjoyed the Hampshire cured meats board and the smoked salmon; both proving very popular with our taste buds. An accompaniment of fresh breads create a simple, yet delicious combination when dipped in olive oil with the Pig on the Beach’s specialty smoked salt, prepared on site in their very own smokehouse. After a conversation with our very helpful and knowledgeable waiter, we made our decisions for our main course upon recommendation, the signature dish, Pork Bath Chap was a must; a sizeable section of cheek, chin and neck meat encased in a perfectly crisp shell of seasoned crackling. Some diners may be sensitive to the presentation of on the bone, teeth still in place, but should not let that distract them from the utterly exquisite flavour and satisfaction of the dish. Our other choice was locally caught Huss presented with salt beef cubes, another perfect marriage of texture and flavour ensuing a completely clean plate. After thoroughly enjoying the tastes of the meal so far, we found ourselves seeking a sweet note to finish. From a recommendation from a different, yet equally helpful and informative member of the waiting staff, we chose the ‘Piggy Fours’; a sharing dish featuring an in-house kitchen style jaffa cake, seaweed topped fudge and mandarin doused turkish delight; an enticing mix of flavours that suitably bring any meal to a close. The Pig on the Beach offers a selection of stylish rooms for overnight and extended stays. Perfect for a long weekend; exploring the Purbecks and enjoying the stunning stretch of sandy beach at Studland by day, before settling down for an exquisite evening meal overlooking one of the best natural sights in Britain.

DRG was founded by ex-London Rollergirl Cannon Fire who recruited women from all walks of life from all over Dorset, with help from skaters Gill T. Pleasure and Grace Disorder. In 2014 DRG were ranked in the top 50 in Europe, runners up in the South West UK and placed a respectable third in their division of the Heartlands Tournament. This year they are competing in the British Championships and are helping to train up the Dorset Knobs mens’ team (DKRD).

AERIAL YOGA
HAVE A GO HERO This month, we’re sending Harry to the Bikram studios to ‘have a go’ at a brand new form of yoga called Aerial Yoga. Using soft hammocks, you can experience the benefits of yoga, but suspended off the ground! We spoke to Harry before and after his session to get his thoughts about this innovative form of exercise. Hi Harry, you and Jo had a great time at last month’s challenge… how were you feeling after? We really enjoyed it. It was a really rewarding session as you could feel the hard work paying off and that the more you put in, the more you got out of it. We hope you’re feeling balanced today as we’ve booked you in for an exciting session at Aerial Yoga, a fantastic type of yoga which is new to the area and can only be found locally at Aerial Yoga. Wow, it sounds brilliant. I’ve heard great things from people who’ve tried it already, so I can’t wait to give it a try… fingers crossed I can show some sort of grace and not end up flat on my face!

We have to admit, we underestimated you on this one Harry. How did you find it? I think I surprised myself to be honest. It was invigorating; trying something a little out of my comfort zone, but in a controlled environment, I loved it.

How does Aerial Yoga work? You’re working with a low-hanging, soft fabric hammock which is suspended from a strong girder and fixings on the ceiling, so you’re totally secure at all times. For most exercises, you’re supported by the hammock by either sitting in or on the fabric whilst holding a series of poses and body shapes for each exercise. The hammocks hold up to 20 stone and the girder can support up the two tonnes, so it’s really safe. It’s great for beginners who may not have any Yoga experience, like me.

Very often, yoga is associated with zen, meditation, restoration and a deep spiritual practice.
Aerial Yoga is an innovative type of Yoga using a low hanging, soft suspended fabric hammock to aid traditional yoga postures by supporting your body weight.
But there is also another exciting physical aspect of yoga that focuses on achieving physical fitness and works on creating an energetic, shapely, strong and flexible body. When this element of physical fitness is fused with the de-stressing attribute of yoga, it can indeed be a perfect combination, something that can offer the practitioner complete benefits of a yogic discipline. Aerial yoga is a fairly recent and contemporary variation of the yogic discipline that was developed by ex-gymnast and dancer. Aerial yoga is a fitness regime that combines yoga, pilates and dance, while allowing the practitioner to stretch, strengthen his/her body and relax completely in invigorating upside down positions by being suspended with the help of anti-gravity hammocks. The practitioner is suspended in the air in an inverted position with the support of an aerial hammock, which is a silky fabric that supports the body while the practitioner can hang in an inverted position and also performs various postures to relax between stunts. Though the anti-gravity swing looks like any other swing, it is actually quite strong and safe and can sustain up to 20 stone in weight. Generally, at the beginning of each class, the instructors adjust the hammock according to height of the practitioner to allow him to balance his/her weight comfortably. Aerial Yoga may not be suitable if you are affected by any of the following: • Glaucoma or other pressure related issues • Traumatic brain injury • Heart Disease or Heart Conditions of any kind • High or low blood pressure • Pregnancy • Neck or spinal injuries • Epilepsy If in doubt please refer to your Health Care Professional. The weight of the body is supported, encouraging students to achieve more aligned postures through relaxation and breathing. Enhancing a relaxed and peaceful state of mind and body, while working to refine and advance traditional asanas, both in the air and on the ground. The hammock supports the student allowing beginners to practise safely and to attempt deeper movement within the postures. In addition to this a greater level of strength is also achieved as students learn to lift their own body weight in the hammock. The weightlessness removes compression from the spine and provides greater comfort and freedom of movement. Poses that may have been restrictive in other yoga classes will start to be more accessible. Uniquely developed for beginners through to all levels of yoga experience. No previous aerial, acrobatic, or yoga experience is required.
Prepare for your Class • Bring your Yoga Mat to place under the hammock. • Remove all jewellery, hairclips, watches, etc as they may get caught in the hammock. • Wear clothing that covers the armpit area, backs of the knees and the midriff. • Please refrain from wearing clothing with zips or buttons. • Refrain from eating for 2 hours prior to attending an aerial class to avoid discomfort on a full stomach, however ensure you have eaten sensibly prior to this. If you are overly hungry when attending a class you may get “light-headed” when upside-down.

He used to tell me to be professional and disciplined. That covered a multitude of areas in my life – practising every day, living your life the right way, being dedicated and having that hunger of wanting to be a footballer. He was always telling me to do the right thing and when you’re young, that’s hard but he used to instil it in me every time I saw him. He was an ex pro footballer who had played at the top level. He’d been there, seen it and done it and that advice he gave me, to be dedicated, professional and disciplined, was the best I was given. I took it with me and now pass it onto others. Via James Dawes on email What do you like best about your role of ‘Head of Recruitment’ for AFC Bournemouth? The best part is the satisfaction that you play a big role in bringing in the new players. Take Callum Wilson; we watched a lot of his games last season and then put a presentation together for the manager. When he did eventually sign, we felt proud that we had a part to play in that. For the hundreds of players you do look at, the amount you will sign is very minimal. That is the nature of the job. So when you do sign one and he proves to be a good recruit like Callum has been, you feel very proud. My reward is watching players become a success at the club. My least favourite was Brentford. It has a very tiny changing room and the crowd were very volatile. I have one or two good memories there but it’s one of those stadiums I never used to look forward to going to! It’s very difficult because almost every year, you get a team who comes up from the middle of the pack and surprises everyone but this year could be different. The teams I think who will be up there are the top six as it has been for the last few months. Bournemouth, Derby, Middlesbrough, Ipswich, Norwich and Watford. It’s very tight this year. It was the first game of the season and we won 3-2 with me scoring the winning goal. Fletch’s Predictions March sees a very busy month of fixtures… what are your predictions for the games this month? AFCB v Wolves They’ve done well of late. From their perspective, they’ll be looking to clinch one of the playoff spots. We had a good result there earlier this season and we know we need to put a run of results together. It will be a big game for us but one I think we can definitely win. Fulham v AFCB They’ve got some good players and were in the Premiership last season. This game will be live on TV and they’ll be trying to prove themselves but I think we can take the game there, show the country exactly how good we are and come away with the points. AFCB v Blackpool There are no easy games in this division. Just because we’re up near the top and they’re near the bottom, it’s not a forgone conclusion by any means. We’re in the most unpredictable league in Europe and it will be tough but because we’re at home, I know what we’re capable of. Cardiff v AFCB They’re a team who have been a little bit inconsistent. They’re a big club and were in the Premiership last year. They have some big physical players and we’ll have to be at our best and fight the battle. If we do that and manage their power and strength both mentally and physically, I don’t see any reason why we can’t come away with the victory that we need. AFCB v Middlesbrough A massive game. Middlesbrough is one of the biggest clubs in the division. We went to Middlesbrough and got a draw this season and they’ll be wanting to come down and turn us over. It’s another game we have to win. They have some good players but I think we’ve got better and we’ll have too much for Middlesbrough on the day. It will be a very tough fixture nonetheless.
