PIRATES

SPEEDWAY

MACIEJ JANOWSKI, UP FOR THE JOB AS CAPTAIN OF THE PIRATES.

PIRATES-THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

POOLE PIRATES are top of Speedway’s Elite League. After a frantic season, with a whirlwind climax, our heroic septet finished 2014 at the pinnacle of British racing. But it’s no time for celebration yet! As we described last month, the reigning champions still have to embark on the punishing, postseason, play-offs if they are to bring home the silverware. The first hurdle will be the semi-finals, featuring the top four clubs, to decide who will progress to the Grand Final at the end of this month. Only then will the winner of that two legged, ultimate encounter confirm the final destination of the 2014 title. As leaders of the league table, Pirates earned the right to choose their semifinal opponents and had no hesitation in choosing second placed King’s Lynn Stars. The Norfolk outfit have dominated the league this term and only faltered at the very last hurdle, finishing on equal points with Poole but with a lesser race point advantage.

members means that both sides will rely heavily on guest riders to fill the vacancies. The first leg of semi-final number one between Poole and King’s Lynn kicked off in Norfolk on 29th September, as we went to press. The return date is set for Monday 6th October at Poole Stadium, Wimborne Road. Meanwhile, Coventry and Swindon, who finished third and fourth respectively, will go head to head in semi-final number two which takes place over the same dates. In each case, it will be the aggregate winners who will meet in the Grand Final, set to go ahead on Monday 13th October and back at Poole on Wednesday 15th October.

strength and quality will now be seriously tested. Losing Darcy and now Josh has been a body blow to the club and our Poole Pirates are right up against it. With Darcy, also went the captaincy so I have been forced into making a change there too. Clearly, I would rather have not been in that situation but I have no doubt in calling on Maciej Janowski (Magic) to lead us into the play-offs. Given the depleted nature of our team, we are in desperate need of a safe pair of hands to deliver crucial points and spearhead our title tilt. I am confident that Magic is up to the job and indeed he has proved it with a string of impressive results recently.

“I HAVE NO DOUBT IN CALLING ON MACIEJ JANOWSKI (MAGIC) TO LEAD US INTO THE PLAY-OFFS”. MATT FORD

As it happens, both teams are licking their wounds after a miserable run in to their respective campaigns. It has dealt injury blows to key riders and, whilst the Pirates begin their title defence without their suspended number one Darcy Ward, the Stars have lost their kingpin, Niels Kristian-Iversen after a horror crash in the World Championship last month. Added to that, Stars important heat leader, Kenneth Bjerre has been sidelined and Pirate’s Josh Grajczonek has recently broken his collarbone. On the positive side, Pirates will be looking to welcome back Vaclav Milik and Przemyslaw (Shamek) Pawlicki following a short injury spell and stand in skipper Maciej Janowski has been in imperious form of late. However, the scramble to arrange cover for the injured

04

Sadly we are not alone in our problems, we won’t be the only championship hopefuls faced with uncertainty and it only serves to prove what a fragile and dangerous sport we operate in, when any one moment can bring about serious injury to any of our participants”. As Janowski pulls on that captain’s armband, he follows in the footsteps of some great names who have led and inspired the Pirates to past victories; Speedway legends such as Tony Rickardsson, Bjarne Pedersen and Chris Holder have each made impressive role models for the young pole and right now is his chance to shine in the blue and white alongside them.

If Pirates progress to their remarkable fifth consecutive final, they will choose the 20th to host the second leg at home and be hoping that history can repeat itself from their two previous final victories in the last three years. Pirate’s owner, Matt Ford, makes no bones about the degree of difficulty ahead, “I truly felt that we had nailed our team building this year with a balanced side throughout but our

Ford is keen to underline the potential of his young skipper ahead of this most crucial of months, “He may be young and he may lack the experience of some of his predecessors here at Wimborne Road, but don’t let that fool you. Magic is a serious speedway rider and a model professional to lead our club. I know we are in good hands in the remaining weeks. Undoubtedly, we need some good luck and a little magic in the play-offs. Thankfully, we already have one box ticked”.

THE PERSONAL TOUCH

RAINBOW FOODS BY SEAN BURGESS (MSC)

How many of the following old adages about fruit and vegetables did you get told growing up? An apple a day keeps the doctor away, eat your carrots for eyesight like an owl, get your green vegetables in to get big and strong (spinach for big arms of course!) could go on trust me, what then makes all of the above proverbs similar but at the same time very dissimilar? Before you guess the obvious answer it’s not that they aren’t true, in fact there are resonances of truth behind each one even the Popeye arm reference at the end. It is in fact that they all refer to different colour fruits and vegetables. I have a question; how many of you honestly do your weekly shop and consider how many different colours of fruit and vegetables you have in your trolley before hitting the tills? At a guess, I would say not many of you if any and why would you, let’s be honest, it’s not something most have ever really been brought up to consider, is it? Even most fruit and vegetable media campaigns such as the governments ‘5 a day promotions’ don’t really publicise this in any great depth when you look. So why, I hear you ask, is it so important to consider the colours on your food plate? Well, I urge you to keep reading on as the aim of this short article is to answer this very query with the justification of how each colour will improve your health mentioned throughout. Before diving straight into the pool of discussion on different colour fruit and vegetables, I want to make it clear as the author of this article that I know only 1-2 in 10 of you reading this will actually be eating the minimum UK recommendation 5 pieces of fruit and vegetables per day. How do I know this? Well, according to the Food Statistics Pocketbook 2013, the average UK household now manages only 4 portions of fruit and vegetables per person per day, while the poorest 10% have just 2.9 pieces. Back in 2005 though, things looked different - the average person was eating 4.4 of their 5 a day, and even the poorest 10% were having 3.5. The overview of this growing fall in consumption is outlined in the table, top right, taken from ‘the guardian’ online.

Fruit and Vegetable Portions

THIS MONTH, OUR RESIDENT EXPERT, SEAN BURGESS, TALKS ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF INCLUDING COLOURFUL FOOD IN YOUR DAILY DIET.

• Fruit and vegetables are a good source of vitamins and minerals, inclusive of folate, vitamin C and potassium. • Both are an excellent source of dietary fibre, which helps maintain a healthy gut and prevent constipation and other digestion problems. A diet high in fibre can also reduce your risk of bowel cancer. • They help you to maintain a healthy weight and keep your heart healthy.

So we now know that in the UK we don’t eat the minimum requirement of fruit and vegetables per day, but how many of you knew that according to collated longitudinal research in this area we should actually be consuming anywhere between 7 and 11 pieces per day. ‘Why so many?’ - I hear you ask. Well, in a snapshot answer, this is what research has proven so far. • People who eat 7 or more portions of fruit or vegetables a day had a 33% reduced risk of death from any cause, a 25% reduced risk of death from cancer and a 31% reduced risk of death from a cardiovascular disease. • Vegetables may lower the mortality risk more than fruit and eating frozen or canned fruit is associated with an increased risk of death.

With the theoretical justification behind why we should generally eat lots of fruit and vegetables explained, the remainder of this article will now review the before mentioned query identified above relating to the importance of adding colour to your vegetable and fruit diet.

Fruit and Vegetable Colour Guide (Table 1). COLOUR

FOOD SOURCE

WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT

INTERESTING FACT

RED

Strawberries, cranberries, red apples, red onions, tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon, pomegranates.

Red foods are among the richest sources of antioxidants called flavonols, which may protect against heart disease.

Red fruits and vegetables are additionally coloured by a natural plant pigment called lycopene. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that can help reduce the risk of cancer.

GREEN

Kale, spinach, watercress, cabbage, broccoli, asparagus, green peppers, peas, kiwi fruits, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, green beans, spring greens.

A strong immune system, healthy eyes and skin, plus protection against cancer and heart disease.

Green vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, kale, sprouts and watercress contain glucosinolates, thought to protect against cancer by encouraging the selfdestruction of pre-cancerous cells.

ORANGE AND YELLOW

Carrots, mangos, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, papaya, oranges, pumpkin and peppers.

Cancer and heart disease prevention, healthy skin and immunity.

A well-known carotenoid called Betacarotene is found in sweet potatoes, pumpkins and carrots. It is converted to vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy mucous membranes and healthy eyes.

PURPLE AND BLUE BLACK

Blueberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, raisins, prunes, black grapes, raspberries, plums, black and purple grapes, aubergines, and cherries.

Anti-ageing benefits, healthy brain, defence against cancer and heart disease.

Anthocyanins which are antioxidants found in most purple and blue foods are particularly good for supporting a healthy heart and regulating blood pressure.

WHITE

Onions, garlic, shallots, chives, leeks, bananas, cucumber, celery, fennel, mushrooms.

Provides a good source of potassium and anti-oxidants to fight against virus’ and bacteria.

Research shows that quercetin may lower the risk of heart disease and block the release of histamine, helping to ease the symptoms of allergies like hay fever.

So, in review of table 1, I think it is clear to see that eating a balanced plate of colours will improve your overall health, reduce the risk of cardiovascular and other diseases and even lower mortality rates by staving off cancer. With this information sinking in, I would hope this alone might be enough to inspire you to broaden your weekly choices of fruit and vegetables, however as I know well myself, purely reading information at times is often not enough to inspire a subsequent action.

Therefore, it is important to set goals as you plan ways on how to increase your fruit and vegetable intake, here are 5 useful tips which you could use: • Set yourself a goal to try at least 1 new fruit or vegetable each week. Previous foods which you haven’t sampled for a while (6 months or more) would also count as new. • Add fruits such as bananas, pears, oranges or apples to your hot or cold cereals alongside natural yoghurt, don’t be scared to eat more in the mornings remember the rhyme ‘breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince’. • When utilising vegetable’s or fruits in most of your staple meals try and always have at least 2 different colours on your plate. • Replace the processed sauces in your cupboard that accompany your pasta and rice dishes with real chopped tomatoes. • When snacking consider replacing your mid-morning cereal bars with some real dried fruit such as apples, dried apricots or carrot sticks. In addition, if you’re using sandwiches as your snack choice, try adding tomato, cucumber or lettuce as a filling. I hope the above information and tips serves you well over the coming autumn months and beyond, remember for further more personalised guidance on your exercise training and nutrition please do not hesitate to book a free 30 minute consultation by contacting me through my website: www. seanburgesspt.com or by calling: 07831 298610.

TENNIS

WE’RE SPEAKING TO LOCAL CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE TAKING PART IN DIFFERENT SPORTS ACROSS THE AREA TO ASK ABOUT WHY THEY LIKE TO COMPETE, WHAT THEIR GOALS ARE FOR THE FUTURE AND HOW OTHERS CAN GIVE IT A GO IN OUR ‘ONE TO WATCH’ FEATURE. NAME SPORT AGE SCHOOL

CALLUM MATTHEW TENNIS 8 HIGHCLIFFE ST MARKS

ot on the heels of this year’s Wimbledon Championships, local upcoming tennis player Callum Matthew was notching up another title with some exceptional tennis en route to winning his debut county level tournament. We spoke to Callum about his recent success, his training and why he loves tennis so much. How did you first get into tennis? My dad has always loved tennis and played at a competitive level from an early age. We used to play in the garden when I was little but I really got into tennis after seeing a come and try tennis poster from the Christchurch Tennis Facility. I tried it and loved it!! What do you like the most about tennis? I definitely love tournaments the most, although I do get quite nervous before my matches! I really like seeing different clubs and playing against people I’ve not played before. When I know I’m playing someone with a really good rating I feel even more determined to win!

10

You’ve been playing extremely well recently, what are your personal highlights? Although I started playing tennis 2 years ago, I have only started competing in tournaments outside my club in the last 4 or 5 months. I have played 26 competitive matches so far and have won 22 of them, which I am quite proud of. I was really happy to win the very first tournament I entered but my personal highlight has to be winning the 76th Milford Open, which was my first County level tournament and more recently the West Hants Thailand Open Tour 2014. Do you play any other sports? I play in the school cricket team and love athletics. I also moved onto stage 7 in my swimming recently but tennis is by far my favourite! Who is your favourite tennis player(s)? Idol? Hero? I like lots of players for different reasons, but my favourite is probably Andy Murray because he is British – it was great to see him win Wimbledon last year. I really like watching Nadal and Federer for tips too! What sort of training are you doing at the moment? I currently have 2 1 to 1 sessions per week with my coach who has really helped me over the last few months, as well as 2 group sessions per week with my team and a more relaxed fun session on a Saturday morning. I also try and practise with my dad as often as I can. What are your hopes and goals for the future? I love playing tennis and aim to continue to work hard with my training and play as many tournaments as possible! The ultimate goal will always be Wimbledon!

What would you say to other young people who might want to try playing tennis? Tennis is a great game and I would encourage anyone with an interest in tennis to go down to Christchurch Tennis Facility and give it a try. Everyone’s really friendly and welcoming and you might even find it as addictive as I do!

“I’M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE DORSET COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS WHICH ARE COMING UP NEXT AND HOPE TO PLAY AS WELL AS I CAN. LONG TERM THE ULTIMATE GOAL WILL ALWAYS BE WIMBLEDON!”

WILDLIFE

Underwater World PART 1 THIS MONTH’S SPECIAL ‘THE SWELL’ FEATURE, IS THE FIRST IN A SERIES TALKING TO LOCAL MARINE LIFE EXPERT, CONSERVATIONIST AND PROFESSIONAL MARINE WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER, STEVE TREWHELLA. STEVE WILL BE TALKING TO US ABOUT A NUMBER OF PROJECTS AND CAMPAIGNS HE IS WORKING ON LOCALLY IN HIS FASCINATING LINE OF WORK. ALL HIS IMAGES ARE AVAILABLE AS PRINTS AND HE IS AVAILABLE FOR TALKS AND PRESENTATIONS ON LOCAL MARINE AND COASTAL WILDLIFE. Name Steve Trewhella 12

Hi Steve, thank you for talking to us, when did your love for the water world begin? We lived inland until I was 14 when I moved to Dorset. But with my family being Cornish, we spent 2 weeks of the year on the coast. All I wanted to do was play in rock pools. This still hasn’t changed! It’s a bit of a standing joke. I’m 50 now but when I was young, my nickname was ‘Trewelly’, playing on my surname Trewhella and my welly boots! I lived out in Lytchett Matravers where everybody knew everybody. To say I didn’t fit in was a fair assumption. When I was a teenager most of my friends would be out on their mopeds down to Poole or Sandbanks to go and find some girls and do normal things that teenagers do. I’d be traipsing round the village in a pair of wellies with my net and a bucket and they’d ask where I was going. I’d say that I had found some really good dragon fly larvae in the pond or some crested newts and they’d look at me strangely and go off. From when I was a small child, I had always loved nature and wildlife and been into beetles and bugs and we’d always had animals as pets. Most kids grow out of things like that but I got progressively worse. Suddenly I had time and money as well to dedicate to doing it even more! It was quite funny really; I don’t get called ‘Trewelly’ anymore but get called lots of other things! I then had kids and got married and had a few years of being dormant. I always love snorkelling and rock pooling so as soon as I could afford to, I trained to dive and saved and saved to buy my first camera because I wanted to photograph what I could see underwater. I was so amazed and assumed others would be too so that’s how I got into it. Can you tell us about how your work ends up on national TV? I’m a contributor for various media and usually, I will send content to them and sow the seed. Sometimes, if there is something they specifically want to cover, they will approach me. Normally, I have a list of media contacts and if something happens, I’ll get it to the contacts and see what happens. 5 minutes of film equates to a huge amount of time. We’ll film for 5 or 6 hours a day finding things, looking for things, and then they’ll edit it all down to a few minutes coverage. The BBC Natural History unit call and want to talk about things I find. I’ve often been on national television with all my kit and my magnifying goggles - it makes me laugh imagining how nerdy I look! It’s a nice feeling when they ask me to work with them. Tell us about a project you’ve recently been working on locally… The seahorses at Studland have had a lot of interest. We found a seahorse colony at an exceptional site and we had never before been able to film these animals. Then suddenly, we had the opportunity and found a place where you can almost guarantee to see a seahorse. It was big news. The One Show, Countryfile, even a specific documentary series called Britain’s Secret Seas wanted to show the footage. My wife found the first pregnant seahorse back in 2005. It was the first one ever seen in this country and it proved that they were a native species. We continued diving at Studland and in 2008 we found over 40 seahorses; at least half were pregnant males. They’re the only animal in the world where the male can give birth and are unique in so many ways. Unfortunately, protecting them is very controversial. To protect them, you have to protect the eelgrass that they live in. This is a flowering plant that grows under water and is very easily damaged by anchorages and chain moorings. Studland is a very popular anchorage, there are sometimes 300 plus boats a day and each one creates a large hole, damaging the eelgrass. We don’t know how long it takes to recover or even if it recovers, there’s been no work to look at this. We want to make it a marine reserve next year. The government have set out to create these reserves across the country but it’s a contrived process with lots of barriers to get past. Numbers of seahorses spotted have plummeted over the last few years. A lot of diving time has gone into it with only one being seen this year which is very worrying. In 2008, we were seeing 8 or 9 seahorses every dive. We don’t know why they’ve declined. It emphasises the need to protect the site. What we do in this world is wait until something is on the brink of extinction or it is completely extinct locally, and then we spend millions on trying to introduce it again. Prevention is the answer.

www.ukcoastalwildlife.co.uk SteveTrewhella1 SteveTrewhellaUKCOASTALWILDLIFE

Favourite place to dive and explore? I am drawn to Kimmeridge, Studland and Purbecks area. There is so much going on and it is home to many varied habitats that are of interest to me. Also with living here, If I see rubbish around those beaches, I see it as sense of possession. Almost like it’s in my own garden; I take it personally and it feels like it’s my responsibility. Do you take part in any activities on top of the water? No, a boat to me is like a car on the sea that takes me from A to B. It takes me to where I need to be out at sea. I body board badly but that’s about as far as it goes! I don’t consider diving as a sport, although I enjoy the experience, it’s a means of getting where I need to be because I can’t breathe underwater. Do you travel much around the world with what you do? I’ve been abroad but it doesn’t float my boat at all. I like this country and I love living here. I could live until I was 300 years old and I still wouldn’t exhaust all the places you can visit in our country. I never get bored. I don’t need to jump on a jumbo jet to see incredible things. Of course, there are places and animals that I want to go and see. I’ve been to the Azores and there are some places you do have to travel for but I find something new every time I go out on our beaches. I like to observe an animal and then study it and see how it works and lives. I especially love all the tiny things. They are ignored. Without them, there’s nothing else. You need all the little stuff and we have so much to see right here on our doorstep. Tell us about your book you’re writing… Julie, my wife and I are writing a book on beachcombing. We’re passionate about it. There is nothing in existence out there for people to use as a resource. It will be a comprehensive guide to what you find on our beaches and will cover two bases. It will cover the academic side using accurately described scientific names. This will be a useful for students. But we also want it to really appeal to the general public for people to start beachcombing and identify things they find on the beach. People do to all the time already; walking the dog, metal detecting, exploring rock pools, collecting things from the beach and this will help you find out what these things are and where they come from. It will cover all the natural and manmade things that wash up on the beaches in the UK. Everything found has been on a journey and we get things from all over the world arriving on our shores. Some things come from 5000 miles across the Atlantic and they’ve all got stories to tell. It’s really interesting and a huge subject. Often, people don’t consider beaches to be a habitat. You see a huge pile of smelly seaweed and think the council should take it away but if you take time and sit there and look at what’s going on you see the birds coming down and that pile of seaweed ends up stabilising the coastline and serves a purpose. That’s what the book is about; showing all the incredible and different things that appear on our coastline. Look out in next month’s issue when Steve talks about the effect plastics are having to our seas and the wildlife that inhabits it.

HOCKEY

WE’RE SPEAKING TO LOCAL WOMEN INVOLVED IN DIFFERENT SPORTS ACROSS THE AREA TO FIND OUT THEIR MOTIVATION, PASSION AND STORY ABOUT THEIR DESIRE TO COMPETE his month we’re speaking to Elaine Murphy, locally based England Hockey player and PE teacher at St Peter’s School, Bournemouth. We chat to her following her recent victory at the Master’s World Cup and find out how it all began, how it feels to be a World Champion and how she wants to inspire other women and children to get involved with the sport she loves. Hi Elaine, thank you for talking to us. When did you start playing hockey and what got you into it? I started playing hockey at the age of 15 at my local secondary school when my PE teacher encouraged me to join the school hockey team. At the time I was playing football for Reading Ladies and she thought the competitive nature of hockey would suit me. Since then as I’ve moved around the country, I’ve always sought out a hockey club to join, both for the opportunities to meet people and play the sport I love. Congratulations on your recent World Champion title. Tell us about how it felt when you scored that winning goal? It felt like I had been rewarded for all those years of training and hard work and it felt even more special because I am that much older, I suppose I knew that people back at home at my school, the gym, and my club were following my progress and would share in the excitement that I felt. I was just so excited! The whole team had played with such spirit and belief and I felt proud to have contributed so significantly to the final result. What is next on your list that you’re training for? I am currently involved in pre-season training for my club, followed by preparation for next year’s

NAME ELAINE MURPHY SPORT HOCKEY international commitments. Trials for the 2015 Home Nations and European Championships start again in late October, with both tournaments being held in London during the summer. What level of fitness does your sport require and where do you keep fit currently? Hockey requires a combination of endurance, strength, and speed. I train 4 times a week at the Village gym, under the guidance of my personal trainer, James Bovett. Each week I’ll do a Spin class, Metafit and Synergy, and an hour’s personal training. In addition, I have weekly sports specific training with Bournemouth Hockey Club.

You’re a PE teacher at St Peter’s School; do you have many pupils interested in playing hockey? Participation in hockey generally is on the increase and since my success we now have groups of students playing hockey in curriculum time. I’m hopeful that more students, particularly girls, will be inspired by my success and will take up the sport outside of school. What are the fitness and personal benefits you can gain from hockey? At the age of 53, I am fitter now than I’ve ever been and playing hockey gives me the incentive to keep training. I love the competitive nature of the sport and still get excited when I wake on match days. Hockey is a very social sport and I’m grateful for the many friends I’ve made along the way. Do you compete in any other sports? Not competitively but recreationally I love most water sports and will try my hand at anything. I recently tried coasteering and am looking to play more badminton, tennis and golf in the future. Can people of all ages get involved and where would be a good place to find out more? Hockey is a very inclusive sport and caters for all ages from 4 up to 70 or more. All clubs have information on their websites and for a list of these you can go to www.englandhockey.com Bournemouth Hockey Club has a thriving youth section, and has mens and ladies sections that cater for all ages and abilities. You can find them on: www.bournemouthhockeyclub.co.uk or call 01202 581933 for more details. Thank you Elaine and we wish you all the best with your future.

YOUR PRE-WORKOUT AND POST WORKOUT BEVERAGES BY MARK DALEY

Sometimes it’s hard to find the energy for a good, intense workout, especially if you’ve had a meal or snack containing carbohydrates. We know the carbs are a good fast source of energy, so why don’t they give us the get up and go we need? Actually, for some of us, if not most of us, carbs are better off being ingested after training when you’re ready to relax and repair. Eating carbs leads to a release of serotonin, a hormone that promotes a state of relaxation, not exactly what we need pre-workout! They also lead to a release of insulin, a hormone that reduces blood sugar, which can lead to a crash in energy so that you end up feeling your energy crash rather than soar. Something that’s virtually guaranteed to stimulate your central nervous system and prepare you for exercise is caffeine, and the simple way of taking that is strong black coffee. Before exercise, strong coffee has been shown to increase focus and concentration as well as help in mobilising fat for energy expenditure. A double espresso could go a long way towards a great, productive workout. Add to this a teaspoon of organic coconut oil and you have a great pre-workout beverage. The coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s) these fats are utilised as energy virtually as fast as carbs but without the added insulin and serotonin spike, so you’ll be focused and have energy which is ideal if you’re training to reduce body

fat and increase muscle tone. Any longer than 45 minutes to an hour and you may then want to consider adding some type of carbohydrate drink to maintain fuel stores, but if the workout is intense enough, 45 minutes is usually more than enough to be productive unless you are a training endurance athlete looking for stamina rather than strength, tone and condition. Once you’ve worked out, the goal is to reign back on the stress hormones like cortisol, which are great to have spiking during training but not afterwards, you will realise the last thing you would want is more coffee. Better options for beverages would be either plain black tea, which has been shown to lower stress hormones or perhaps chamomile tea. Chamomile soothes nerves and makes you calm. People who are hyperactive by nature will find it quite beneficial as it stabilizes their moods. If you have insomnia, a cup of chamomile tea is just right to bring on sound sleep. Another option would be green tea. This has the added benefit of relaxing the body without making you feel sedated. Green tea’s theanine content is what elevates the mood, relieves tension and anxiety but at the same time increases focus, so you’ll feel relaxed but alert.

BE INSPIRED / RUNNING

WE’RE SPEAKING TO EXCEPTIONAL LOCALS WHO ARE DOING EXCEPTIONAL THINGS TO HELP OTHERS, OVERCOME CHALLENGES AND MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE IN OUR BE INSPIRED FEATURE. THIS MONTH, CHRIS WHITE TALKS ABOUT HIS PASSION FOR RUNNING IN OCRS (OBSTACLE COURSE RACING), HIS GREAT CHARITY WORK WITH LOCAL SPORTSWEAR BRAND, PURE WARRIOR AND HIS ‘UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL’ NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MUD! NAME SPORT

CHRIS WHITE RUNNING/OBSTACLE COURSE RACING

Hi Chris, thanks for talking to us. Can you tell us a bit about you and how/when you first started running? Firstly, I would like to say thank you for wanting to find out more about me and my sport. Well, I’m 34 and I have lived in Poole my entire life. I have three great children and hope to get at least one of them involved in OCRs! Between running around in mud, I hold down two jobs - one as a falconer for Lester Bird and Pest Solutions and one for Hoburne Park doing security! What made you decide to try extreme obstacle course races? I only started running last August when I was asked by the Pure Warrior team (Marc Smith) to partake in Lake Fear in October 2013 so I started training and at first, 5k seemed so hard but in time they became much easier and slowly we got better! You’re linked to Pure Warrior, a local clothing brand who do lots of fundraising for various causes. Can you tell us about some of the work you’ve done with them to raise money? I decided to join the warrior team as they were trying to raise money for a little boy called Daniel who was suffering from a life threatening illness. They wanted to raise enough to send him and his family off to Disney and I felt I wanted to help so I took up OCR running and haven’t looked back! In May just gone, the Pure Warrior team once again sprung into action to raise money for a young local boy called Chester who was in need of a new specialist bed to help him with his disability. The Pure Warrior team always want to help local people

18

and if anyone needs any fundraising, they should contact Pure Warrior and I’m sure if they can, they will help. You seem to take part in a race of some form most weekends! How many have you done now and which has been your favourite? I have competed in 18 races this year with still around another 10 to go before the year is out! I had originally set a target of one race per month this year to break myself into the sport slowly but I caught the running bug and soon got carried away! My favourite race this year was Lake Fear 2 in May and I was lucky enough to be asked to join ‘Team Fear’ by Mel Rayner, the race director. I helped set up the course and build some of the obstacles. Mel even asked me and my running partner, ‘Tinks’ to test the course the afternoon before the big day, which I was honoured to do and shocked she wanted me considering I was new to the sport. We tested the course and then raced it the following morning and wow! What a race, it had everything you wanted in an OCR - water, mud, cargo nets, deep holes to lose yourself in and the highlight for me was the underground pit! Very much looking forward to Lake Fear 3. What has been your most difficult race to date and why? Out of all the races this year, I would have to say the Lulworth Lungbuster, without a doubt was the most gruelling race I’ve done to date. It started at Durdle Door and basically we ran the coastal path, in and out of farm land for 15 miles. I really pushed my body to its limit and to add to the crazy steep hills, we had gales blowing in from the sea and rain coming in sideways. But again, through willpower to succeed, I got my head down and completed the 15 miles of hell in just over 3 hours; not bad for a beginner! Obstacle Course Racing (OCRs) is getting a huge following, what it is about this style of running event that you think people are attracted to? I believe that OCRs have taken off so much because people can have fun getting fit and be a big kid at the same time! I remember my first brutal OCR and thinking, if my mum could see me now wading through this waste deep mud, she would have kittens and probably ground me! But luckily, I’m 34 and I can get away with it now! Through doing OCRs, I have lost nearly 3 stone in weight and I feel great about myself. It’s definitely changed my life for the better. Who would have thought running could do that! Do you take part in any other sports? When I’m not training for races, I do like the odd game of tennis but I’m no Federer. I’m also a keen mountain biker; the muddier the better. Where can people find out more about OCR events locally and get involved? I always search Runners World for events. They normally have everything that’s going on in the running diary on their event page. Thanks for talking to us Chris and we wish you all the best with your future.

KITE SURFING

PHOTOGRAPHY: JAKE MOORE WWW.JAKEMOOREPHOTGRAPHY.CO.UK

POSEIDON aving enjoyed possibly one of the best summers in years, Poole’s water ways have been a lively mix of action this summer with paddle, engine and wind powered sports all having their turn to splash around the warm beaches this August. With the little ones settled back at school, a crisper start to the day chilling things down and the evenings drawing shorter, there’s a brisk change in the season and summer is becoming just a distant memory. For those brave souls who love nothing more than to harness the power of Mother Nature, this is the season they’ve been waiting for and local kitesurfers in particular have got that sparkle back in their eye. Never complaining about the summer sunshine, kiters are now excitedly pulling their gear back out of the garage and getting warmed up to make the most of the UK windy season. Chasing a variety of conditions whilst attached to a large inflated kite, the building autumn wind allows kiters to kick up a gear, reaching speeds of 50mph or more, jump heights of up to 50 feet and perform multiple flip and spin combinations.

Next time you head down to the beach keep your eyes peeled for these storm chasing adventurers, making the most of nature’s free energy and the warm autumn water the summer roast up has gifted us. For those brave enough to face the chill and hold on tight, give Poseidon Kite School in Poole a call, running a 2 day course which covers all required basics, they’ll have you smiling all winter long, even when you’re enjoying the post session warm up cuppa. WWW.POSEIDONKITESCHOOL.COM About Poseidon Poseidon Kite School is the UK’s premiere kite school and Poole’s freshest kiteboarding scene. Based in Sandbanks, they offer the highest level of service in every aspect of kiting. Poseidon offers courses, coaching, clubs, retail, repairs and holidays.

About Kiting Kitesurfing (or kiteboarding) is a fast paced adrenalin sport where by controlling a large inflatable kite, the rider is pulled along on a board of their choice across the water. Riding with the freedom of only a small bar harnessing them to the kite, the rider has the ability to enjoy a variety of sports all within one.

hanks for talking to us Callum. Firstly, welcome to Bournemouth from us all at The Game Magazine. How are you finding it here? It’s nice; apart from this week (at time of interview) the weather has been sunny every day so I’ve been out doing stuff. My family is down now and we’ve moved into our new place so we’re really enjoying our time here. On a football front, I’m looking forward to carrying on the form that I’ve shown early on in the season. Has it been easy to settle in? The boys have made me feel welcome and the manager and all the staff… I met them before I signed. They’re a great team and that was one of my decisions in coming here. I’m looking forward to working with them. Outside of football, it’s good to be in my new house. I was in a hotel previously. All in all, it’s all going well and everyone seems really friendly. You signed for AFC Bournemouth this summer, what were the biggest influences in getting you to put the pen to paper? The manager has a great track record of producing and helping young strikers go to the next level and that is what the team is looking to do as well. It’s an ambitious club and I’m an ambitious person myself. The club met what I was looking for so we can move forward together.

I’m sure the Coventry fans would’ve been sad to see you go after such a good season for them last year. 22 goals in 41 games is a pretty good record! Do you reckon you could beat that this season?! I think the way that we play; I’m going to get chances up front. If I can be as ‘clinical’ as I was last season, then it should be a good campaign. Last year I missed 9 weeks of the season so I was looking to get more than I did get but unfortunately couldn’t because of the circumstances, so this season, I’m looking to get well into the double figures again. How are you finding the step up from League 1 to the Championship? It’s been a smooth transition really. There are teams that I have played against already this season that I played against last year. I know how good the teams are in this league and the ones that got promoted were good teams last year in League 1. If you believe in yourself, you can make that transition easily. You wear the number 13 shirt. Can I assume by that you aren’t superstitious? The number 13 has been lucky for me throughout my life! On a personal note, it’s been a good number and things have happened on that date. When it was available, I thought ‘why not’ and that I would go for it and it’s been lucky so far - hopefully it will carry on. Do you have any other pre match routines / superstitions? A few, I don’t like to reveal all of them though! Before games, I have a little chat with the lads but I’m one of the quiet ones and I try to get mentally focused. That way, I’m ready to go out and perform because I’m fully concentrated and not distracted by anything else. Have you managed to settle in with the team easily and how is the banter in the squad? It’s good; the banter here flies around a lot more than what it was at Coventry! Harry and Matty are always at each other which is funny. I’ve been chucking a little spanner in the works between them too today which has been funny! The lads are all great here and they all love a laugh and a joke. Last season was an incredible season for AFC Bournemouth, what are the team’s targets for this season? Without giving away too much, we want to be finishing in the top half of the table and we want to achieve better than what we did last season. With a few new additions that the manger has added to the team, I think we can do that.

26

PHOTOGRAPHY: AMY MAIDMENT

You’ve had an incredible start for AFC Bournemouth and have found the net several times already, how important is it for you to get off to a good start at a new club? Any striker starting a new campaign wants to get their first goal of the season as soon as possible. So, to score two on the opening day was a dream, especially on my debut for the club which is always nice. I got off the mark then and I think it has a knock on effect to carry on working hard and getting the goals hopefully that will carry on through the season.

“IT’S AN AMBITIOUS CLUB AND I’M AN AMBITIOUS PERSON MYSELF. THE CLUB MET WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR SO WE CAN MOVE FORWARD TOGETHER”

Who are the teams to beat this year? Every team seems to be a tough game at the moment. We played Huddersfield who beat us last year and Brentford, who have just been promoted, played better than us on the day. We’ve just got to turn up on the day, perform and work hard to pick up the results on the board. How have the fans made you feel since you joined? The fans that I have seen so far have all welcomed me to the club and wished me the best of luck. I’m hearing my name now from the stands when I score. It’s nice to feel settled straight away. Getting the early goal in the season helped because when you come in new and you’re not scoring, questions start getting asked and people wonder whether it was the right decision so I think I’m starting to prove to people that it was worth me coming to the club and hopefully I can carry that on. Finally, sum up AFC Bournemouth in one sentence? AFC Bournemouth is a very ambitious club and with our current manager, we’re going in the right direction.

example, are you going to seek a mentor for your own business, gain a further insight into a particular company that is also attending or you are just purely seeking to meet up with like-minded people? It is also extremely important to be able to talk about yourself confidently without coming across as overly confident, no-one likes a ‘know it all’. Always be aware that many people you meet may only be the ‘gradual steps’ to the ultimate person you are wishing to meet within their business so therefore being friendly and professional must remain at the forefront of your mind. Where possible, ensure you have literature and business cards about your proposed business or an outline of the role you are seeking. You will be asked for these or asked for your email to find out more about YOU – include your phone and twitter handle. Another powerful ‘tool’ to aid you on your way is to take a ‘buddy’ along with you – entering a room full of people can be daunting at the best of times and slightly nervewracking. Let someone else share this experience with you – you never know they may become addicted to it too! Ensure your ‘buddy’ can be relied upon to mingle too on their own whilst you ‘work the room’ making your chosen contacts. Follow up these tips and we promise you will not look back. Networking will be part of your life and you will have no regrets!

ON-LINE NETWORKING – HOW WE LOVE SOCIAL MEDIA! LINKED IN Maximise this invaluable online resource! Once you have met with your networking colleagues, connect with them on linked in and expand your network of contacts even more – for those you wish to follow more closely follow them on ‘twitter’ and send a quick thank you by email for speaking with you. Linked in is superb for promoting

networking events. A further project Julie is extremely active within is a local social Enterprise Project through ‘Shore Ideas’, she has recently become a ‘Lion’ on the ‘Dragon’s Den Project.’ This project is a catalyst to promoting social entrepreneurship and innovation by providing youth teams 13-21 with seed funding, resources and mentoring to execute exciting community projects to benefit a chosen charity or beneficiary of their choice. Julie is delighted to

both your skill set, work history, work ethic – a complete overview of you! TWITTER This superb online too allows you to follow people who have likeminded interests and can result in you having dialogue with people who can assist you in your career and again put you in touch with the right people to help you ‘climb

the ladder’ to success! BLOGGING Blogging is a fantastic way to promote your ‘name’, especially if your ‘blog’ has a professional edge (ensure you add your contact details so interested parties can get in touch with you). Furthermore use Facebook, Twitter and Linked In to promote any new posts!

become a ‘Lion’ and we know her addictive, positive and energised personality will bring results when investing ideas and time in these young people! RUNNING

THIS MONTH, OUR VERY OWN HARRY LUND, SALES EXECUTIVE FOR THE GAME WRITES HIS LAST PREEVENT DIARY ABOUT HIS THOUGHTS, TRAINING AND PROGRESS AHEAD OF THE BOURNEMOUTH MARATHON.

PROFILE Name: Harry Lund Age: 23 Job: Sales Executive at The Game Magazine and Level Two Coach at Christchurch Tennis Facility

MARATHON RUNNERS’ BLOG Survival of the fittest; the age old saying that can enthuse and inspire some, but instil a sense of fear in others. I sit somewhere in the middle at present, unsure of how much I trust the training I’ve done over the past few weeks and how much I believe that my body can withstand what I intend to put it through on the day of the Bournemouth Marathon. Those of you who are feeling the same, rest assured that you’re not alone and that I am reliably informed that this is a common state of mind that first time marathon runners can have in the lead up to the big day. So then, how do you get these worries and concerns out of your head? For me, it comes back to that word ‘trust’. Having the confidence

in yourself that you can achieve your goals can be a powerful tool, but that confidence can’t be found unless you trust yourself. Easier said than done, yet the alternative of pulling out doesn’t bare thinking about after putting in the numerous hours of training and hard work that have got you where you are. The reality of it all is that the hard part is actually behind you. The tapering process should be in action now as we approach the final two to three week countdown to race day, a welcome bit of respite and the realisation that the vast majority of your miles have been run and that after two weeks of steady running to maintain your level, there are just 26.2 miles left between you and your goal. I’ve found that taking any positives you can at this stage is quite vital to my continued commitment to the marathon. Finding good points in every run is a great way to keep your mind on track and helps prevent the majority of negative thoughts you may have about your prospects. There will always be good days and bad days, but it’s how you get through the bad days that defines how you will ultimately perform during the race itself. Trusting your ability to keep going in the face of adversity and bad times will enable you to take on almost anything that the race can throw at you. Now then, what about the training itself? Mine has been a bit of a mixture and not exactly what would be considered ideal preparation for someone ahead of their first marathon, but I try not to worry about it, I’m sticking to thinking “I’ve done the best I could with what I’ve had”. Time has been the most prominent factor that has dictated my training; finding two or more spare hours every few days to go out running has been a struggle and it has undoubtedly affected my progress. But whilst that might put some people in a negative frame of mind, I’ve found myself able to look at the bright side of what I’ve been

achieving recently. I’m up to running around 15/16miles in an OK time and aerobically, I feel fantastic. I don’t feel out of breath or anything like that during or after my runs, which is a brilliant feeling. The only drawback is my energy levels, my legs in particular. So, to help me I’ve been using some consumable sports gels on my long runs to help give me a bit of a boost and whilst I can’t rely on them, they offer a little bit of extra help that I welcome with open arms. My running trainers (Asics Gel-Phoenix 6s) and socks (Groundhog) are giving me some fantastic support and they’ve proved to be of huge benefit to me, so my thanks goes to Simon and the staff at Up & Running in Winton for their help in choosing them and assessing what would help me most.

trial of resolve; one that I’m happy to say I passed. I would wholeheartedly recommend an obstacle course race to anyone who is curious, whilst being great fun; they throw you into unique situations that you would be almost never be likely to find yourself in throughout your normal life.

I can’t go through this month’s update without mentioning the Spartan Super Race that I completed at the end of August; a 13km course of mud pit crawling, water hazard wading, monkey bar navigating, trail running, weight carrying, rope climbing, barbwire dodging endurance that provides a considerable mental challenge to its participants. Whilst the experience may perhaps not have been to most beneficial preparation in terms of cardiovascular improvement, it gave me the opportunity to test my mettle against a mentally draining

One last thing, if you happen to see me waddling my way around the course on the 5th October, shout at me and make sure I get keep going, or offer me a lift to a few miles down the way if you feel particularly sorry for me! Thanks

This is my final update before the Bournemouth Marathon race day comes around, so I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all the very best to everyone participating in the various races over the festival weekend and to let you all know that I will be doing a post-race update describing my race day experience and offering up any useful advice, discovered first hand, to those who are keen to take on the long-distance event in the future.

ADRENALINE

MISSION NO. 24 PART.1 ROCK REEF, BOURNEMOUTH PIER The Game’s ‘Have a go hero’ was set a challenge brimming with adrenaline this month… with the new attractions at the end of the pier causing a buzz in Bournemouth, we sent Jo along to Rock Reef to try out the fantastic facilities and report back on her experiences! Look out for part 2 where we review Bournemouth’s biggest and most thrilling experience, The PierZip.

Hi Jo, how did you feel following your cardio tennis session at Christchurch Tennis Facility last month? The next day, I could really feel it in my arms and I really felt like it was a great workout whilst having so much fun. Definitely up for more of that! We’ve stepped up the thrill factor this month and booked you a session at top new activity centre, Rock Reef. You will be trying out their Clip ‘n’ Climb walls, the Vertical Drop Slide, the Leap of Faith and the High Line obstacle course…how are you with heights?! Um, not too bad but it depends on how high! I’ve heard great things about this place and can’t wait to get inside and find out more!

AFTER That looked a lot of fun…how was it? ‘Wow’ is about all I can manage right now! What an incredible experience! I feel like I’ve had a year’s worth of adrenaline, all in a couple of hours. Tell us about all the activities… Clip ‘n’ Climb This was brilliant with so many different types of climbing walls for all ages and abilities. We had a full safety briefing, harnessed up and were shown how to use the equipment first of and then the walls were your playground to try and challenge yourself to climb as high as you could. It was great to know that you were on a line which meant you could never fall and hurt yourself. There were lots of children and families enjoying this activity. Vertical Drop Slide This was by far the most thrilling part for me! Imagine a slide built into the wall that vertically goes up to the ceiling. You wear a protective suit and helmet and hold onto a bar which winches you right up to the top. Holding my body weight was the toughest part! When you get to the top, you let go and free fall for a very short time until you slide down to the bottom. I still can’t believe I did it, it was amazing! Leap of Faith This came a very close second on the thrill scale following the slide. For this one, you’re again safety harnessed up and you wear a helmet. You then climb up a ladder to a platform which is up near the ceiling of

the building. Hanging in front of you is what looked like a punch bag and you have to jump off the platform and grab the bag before letting go and slowly dropping to the ground on the wire. I grabbed the bag but slipped so didn’t hang on for very long! Absolutely brilliant! High Line This is an aerial obstacle course hanging above all the activities and climbing walls below. The challenge is to make your way around the course of swinging obstacles. I found this one really hard but great fun. I shed a few pounds in sweat! It was hard work balancing and walking across the beams and nets. Again, fantastic fun! What was the best and hardest parts of the experience and why? The best part was the Vertical Slide. It was terrifying but exciting and I’m so pleased I managed to hang on to the very top before dropping down. It took my breath away and I think people back on the beach could hear me scream when I let go! The hardest, for me, was jumping out to grab the swinging bag on the Leap of Faith. I felt very wobbly when I was nearing the top of the climb up the ladder but again, I felt proud of myself when I got back down to earth. What were the staff and instructors like? The team at Rock Reef were brilliant. They were really welcoming and professional and you felt very safe the whole way around. Rich, our instructor was encouraging and made me feel like I could do these challenges and I’m so glad I did. Would you recommend Rock Reef as a day out? 110%. It is a brilliant place for fun, exercise and excitement all year round. Being an inside facility, I would definitely automatically think of going there on a rainy day and it has activities suitable for the whole family. The Pier Cave is part of the facility and is one that we’re doing on our next visit where you climb through lots of tunnels in their innovative structure. Rock Reef is what Bournemouth needed for children, young people and adults to try something new and challenge themselves. Get down there and try it. I can’t wait to try the PierZip next month.

EATING CLEAN AND EATING OUT

Pack snacks for when you’re travelling It’s likely you’ll have them at home, so take them with you. Airports are particularly challenging – even if you have access to business lounges – so carry trail mix, peanut-butter, apples, oranges, protein balls, and rye crackers. You’ll not arrive starving and wanting to eat whatever you can lay your hands on. Do your homework! Research the restaurant - instead of waiting until you sit down at the place where you made reservations and hoping there will be something appealing on the menu, go online and scan what’s on the menu ahead of time.

or those of you that travel regularly and/or entertain for business and like to eat as healthily as possible – this article is for you. If you find it difficult to choose the cleanest, healthiest option when dining out then you’re not alone! Many restaurants are pretty respectful of food allergies and special diets, but actually many have yet to fully grasp the back-to-basics trend of food prepared with the minimum of added extras. Here are our tips, strategies and guidelines for negotiating a menu if you find yourself eating out on more days than you’d otherwise have planned to. BELIEVE IT – YOU CAN EAT OUT AND EAT CLEAN! Don’t assume that just because you’re leaving home you’ll have to relax your nutrition plan. Olympic and pro athletes are on the road all the time. The answer is planning and always being mindful of what you’re eating. Jet lag and tiredness can play havoc with your appetite so having these guidelines in place can really help. Keep it simple Grilled chicken, steamed fish, salad… these are the standbys for eating clean. The simpler the food, the more unprocessed it is. Be aware that restaurants always use too much salt to enhance the flavour of their dishes, so ask for no salt and then add it at the table. Ask for dressing on the side. Don’t worry about what others might say! With colleagues or clients you’ve never met before? You may feel like it would just be easier to not look picky and order a standard dish without “cleaning it up”. Just remember what’s important to YOU. Other people aren’t going to think any less of you just because you changed your order at dinner. They probably won’t even notice. If you’re worried about what the staff will think of you firstly remember you’re paying their wages and then tell the waiter you’re in training for a fitness competition. You’ll likely gain some respect and they’ll be more amenable to helping you to! Order water and avoid alcohol If avoiding alcohol doesn’t seem right from a social point of view, allow the waiter to fill your glass with a little wine, but then just don’t drink it. To avoid excess sugar and if you need some flavour in your water, squeeze a lime or lemon into it – (try and

steer clear of fizzy drinks whether diet or full of sugar), beers and cordials. Skip the appetisers! If you’re out on business – just view it as a normal week day meal – if you wouldn’t normally eat an appetiser at home, then follow this rule when out. Create your own main course At the restaurant, ask the waiter questions about how certain dishes are prepared, to substitute certain unhealthy sides for steamed vegetables, a side salad with olive oil and vinegar or a plain sweet potato. If the ingredients are already in the kitchen then no matter where they appear on the menu, the chef should be willing to combine them to suit the client! Skip dessert! If you crave something sweet – opt for a fruit or peppermint tea instead. Enjoy your meal! The satisfaction you get from eating tasty but unhealthy foods is short lived, and the regret just isn’t worth it! The satisfaction that you will get from committing and sticking to a fitness or performance goal is much more long lasting. You will have more energy, mental and physical strength that will go a long way in your professional and personal life. And if you’re only faced with Fast Food? Pizza: It’s cleaner to eat at a local pizzeria than a chain – save the Domino’s with cheese crust for a serious cheat meal. Chinese: Steamed rice, chicken/prawns and veggies with some light soy sauce are better choices. Avoid anything with a sticky sauce that has been deep-fried. Japanese: Order the sashimi (raw fish) or nigiri (slices of fish on rice), or clear broths with rice noodles and beef/chicken Mexican: Opt for chicken, fish or bean tacos. The shell should always be soft, not fried. Guacamole is always a good bet – plenty of good fats in here! Burger chains: Opt for a salad, without dressing if you have no other choice. Avoid the bread, which is packed full of additives.

YOGA ZONE

YOGA ZONE WELCOME TO THE YOGA ZONE, A WELLBEING FEATURE IN ASSOCIATION WITH BIKRAM YOGA, BOURNEMOUTH. FIND OUT ABOUT THIS POPULAR FORM OF HOLISTIC EXERCISE, LEARN ABOUT THE BENEFITS AND FOLLOW THE POSTURE OF THE MONTH. What is Bikram Yoga? Bikram Yoga is a 26 Hatha Yoga posture Sequence done in 40 degree heat with 2 breathing exercises, all taking 90 minutes. Bikram Yoga systematically works every part of the body, giving your internal organs, veins, ligaments and muscles everything they need to maintain optimum health and maximum function. The heat allows you to stretch safely and when you sweat, impurities are flushed out of the body through the skin. Muscles are contracted and stretched allowing for better circulation and joint mobility. Blood and calcium are brought to the bones and the immune system is strengthened through extension, compression and increased circulation.

Posture of the Month: Wind Removing Pose / Pavanamuktasana Benefits: Massages ascending, descending and transverse colon. Regulates and normalises hydrochloric acid levels in stomach. Improves and may cure conditions of constipation, flatulence and hyperacidity. Relieves lower back pain. Improves flexibility of the hip joints. Firms and tones muscles of the abdominal wall, thighs and hips. Increases peristalsis in the gut

“I walked into Bikram Yoga Bournemouth to take up the £30 trial in September 2012 and have never looked back. Suffering chronically with Crohn’s disease and also turning a new corner in my personal life I was ready (but nervous) for a new challenge. I literally cannot express my love for Bikram Yoga. My daily battle with pain and dis-comfort is almost completely gone. I am in my fifties and body has not looked or felt this good for years. The “family” atmosphere amongst the customers and staff is truly wonderful and you could not wish for more support and encouragement. I have made true lifelong friends whilst combating my health and more personal hurdles.

Chill out venue of the month

Fact of the month: Importance of digestion

Urban Beach is the place to be for a chilled out weekend brunch, a coffee and catch up with a friend or a delicious evening meal out. Definitely one to try if you liked a friendly and relaxed atmoshphere.

It is said that the root of many diseases and ailments are due to poor digestion. During Bikram yoga, certain postures stimulate digestion. Your stomach will empty its contents, fresh nutrients and oxygen is sent to the digestive system and the intestines begin a wave-like series of contractions known as peristalsis. When your intestines function efficiently, nutrients are absorbed more effectively, elimination is smooth and waste products are expelled from the body. Lack of motion can slow these processes leading to disorders such as intestinal

Chill out track of the month Great chilled out track and what a voice - Sam Smith, ‘I’m Not The Only One’.

Bikram has become my passion. It is addictive, simply because you see almost instant improvements and the studio is brimming with a fun, happy vibe that means you always leave smiling, sweaty and with a bounce in your step.” Jane Spencer (Bournemouth)

inflammation and constipation. It can cause pain, bloating, intolerance to foods and often weight management issues. Yoga improves peristalsis action of the colon with poses such as twists, forward bends and inversions. The heat increases the heart rate and therefore increases the metabolism rate. Combining yoga with heat is the ultimately the answer for a healthy digestive system.

BOXING

PHOTOGRAPHY: CHRISTIAN LAWSON WWW.LAWSON-APD.CO.UK

NAME: Chris Billam-Smith SPORT: Boxing his month, we catch up with local amateur boxer and coach at Steve Bendall’s Gym, Chris Billam-Smith to find out how he started out in the sport he loves and his high ambitions for the future.

Hi Chris, thanks for talking about your sport with us. When did you first get into boxing and how old were you? I started boxing properly at 16. I went a few times with my older brother, Ben before that but when I went to college, I met a lad in my class and it started from there. What is it about boxing that made you choose it as your main sports focus? When I went to watch my mate Dean Perkins, everyone was just chanting “Deano, Deano” so being the youngest of three brothers and always wanting to be centre of attention as a kid, I thought “I want a bit of that!” Eight months later, I was in the ring.

champion! But I have a hell of a lot of hard work, blood, sweat and tears to endure first! You train all abilities and ages at Steve Bendall’s Gym in Bournemouth, how do you motivate others with their own personal goals? I try to make people understand how important happiness is and that achieving goals makes people happy. I train the pro’s alongside Steve, I trained Steve himself for his WBU World Title win and then I train others that just want to be able to do press ups or pull ups. So, all walks of life come in the gym and I just try to inspire everyone!

“I TRY TO MAKE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND HOW IMPORTANT HAPPINESS IS AND THAT ACHIEVING GOALS MAKES PEOPLE HAPPY.” Tell us about your training regime and what it involves… I run 3-4 times a week. They are a mixture of steady 3-4 miles, hill sprints, flat sprints and timed rounds. I do strength work 2-3 times a week and boxing work 4-5 times a week. So it gets tiring and sometimes 3 sessions a day but it’ll all be worth it. What is your ultimate goal in your boxing career? As an amateur, my goals are ABA Elite Champion this season then get on the GB squad to win gold at Rio Olympics 2016 for Great Britain. Then onto the pro’s and world

38

Have you ever sparred with any big names? Steve Bendall... Steve and I have had some wars in the gym. People would pay to watch the ones we used to have. Also, I went sparring at David Hayes gym to spar an old opponent and they chucked me in with George Groves for 2 rounds, 10 weeks before he boxed Carl Froch the first time. Great experience and a lovely man. Have you had any bad injuries? Last October, I boxed for Western Counties and subluxed (partially dislocated) my shoulder. I won the fight but it has been a painful, long

road to recovery. I also broke my hand on an opponent’s bald head a few years back which put me out the championships. I won the fight and was buzzing but after icing my hand for 5 minutes, it turned into a balloon. We heard about your incredible feat of completing 60 rounds for charity! How did you manage to spar with so many people without a break?! It was for charity, that’s how! Mental strength is one of my best attributes. I have an NLP (mental skills coach) called Stuart How. He has helped me massively since working with him. Plus, the guys and girls went easy on me! If any readers want to find out more about how to get into boxing, what would you recommend? Come down the gym. Add me on facebook and ask away. There are plenty of good clubs and gyms in the area. Up at our gym, it’s very friendly and caters for all ages and abilities. We have professional boxers training alongside newcomers but also beginner classes with just technique. Personally, I would recommend my Monday class at 6pm. It is ALWAYS hard work! Thanks for talking to us and we wish you lots of success with your future.

FLETCH’S PREDICTIONS Looking at the fixtures, October could be a tough month. 4 out of 5 of the teams we face have Premier League experience. What are your thoughts ahead of this month’s fixtures? Bolton v AFCB – Bolton haven’t kicked on like I thought they would. They’re a big club and it’s not going to be an easy encounter but I think we can go there full of confidence after our performance at Watford. If we can produce anything like we did in that game, I think we can definitely come away with three points. AFCB v Charlton – Charlton have been a bit of a surprise package this season. They’ve recruited well in the summer and they’ve impressed me. They’re everyone’s favourite to be up near

the top and whether they stay there or not, they’ve had a great start and will be a tough cookie to break down. But, we’re due a home win and I believe we can come out against Charlton and show them how good we can be at home. AFCB v Reading – We had a great result against them last season. They’re a team that are going to be in and around it every year. They’ve been quite active in the transfer market over the summer and they dig out results. It’s not going to be easy but once again, we’re at home so if we can

replicate the performance we had against them at Dean Court last season, I’ll be very happy. Birmingham v AFCB – We had a great result at Birmingham last season, we absolutely dominated and I’ll be hoping we can go there and do the same. AFCB v Brighton – Tough fixture. Brighton are in the mould of Reading. They’ve been very busy in the transfers over the summer; it will be a tough game and a bit of a local derby for us. We’re at home so hopefully we can go one step further this year and get the three points.

What is your fitness regime now with you not playing full time? From Doug Adlem via email

It differs from week to week depending on where I’m travelling. I try to get a couple of games of 5-a-side in. It is hard at my age to keep the weight off and even harder when I’m not training like I used to with the first team. Your body metabolism changes but I am careful with what I eat. I go to the gym once or twice a week when I can nip off for 20 minutes without the manager finding out! I can’t put on too much weight because most of my clothes are really tight and fitted and I can’t afford a whole new wardrobe now I’m not playing! That’s my incentive PLAY ER P to keep the weight off! R

It’s been a month of playing against some good teams with a mixture of results. Which games stand out for you performance wise? The Watford game on 20th September was on TV for the whole world to view and the boys were exceptional. When you’re on TV, it does bring the best out in players. Apart from scoring a second goal, there was not much more that we could have done. We were sucker-punched with the equaliser goal especially late on in the game and it was something we didn’t deserve. We dominated the game from start to finish. It could have been different if we had scored a penalty and if the defender who fouled Callum Wilson was sent off but you’ve just got to deal with whatever is put in front of you. It’s one that got away but it’s definitely a game that everyone should be proud of and it just shows the rest of the division what we’re about and how we’ve come on as a team. Support for home games is consistently strong but also the away following just seems to get better and better. How important is it to the boys to have that support when they’re playing away from home? We took over 700 supporters to Watford which is fantastic. It’s massively important to the players. It doesn’t matter which ground you’re playing, if the stadium is half empty it’s just not the same and the atmosphere isn’t there. If you go to a stadium which is near on capacity, it can really drive you on. It doesn’t always get the results but it helps. The fans know how important the games are and every year, in the 22 years I’ve been at the football club, they’ve been really

superb. The players, managers and staff really appreciate the support and they’re part of the set up just as much as anyone really. Your predictions from last month have been pretty good so far and you’re right, it’s always tricky against teams like Leeds and Watford. Do you think we’re now there with a squad that can compete against these teams? I’ve watched all our games back this season and I’ve seen many games across the Championship and I think we’re as good as anyone. One or two decisions haven’t gone our way of late, and you also need a bit of help from ‘lady luck’ now and then. If we can be a bit more ‘clinical’ when we’re on top of the game and dominating, it would be fantastic but it’s a very tough league and if you don’t take your chances, you’ll get punished. We switched off at the last minute against Rotherham at home and against Leeds we were dominating for the first hour and were 1 nil up but in a blink of an eye, we were 2-1 down, then 3-1, but really, we were the better team. We’ve got to turn those situations more in our favour. It’s still a learning curve and it’s only our second season in the Championship. We’re getting more experienced with every game. Another new player has joined the squad, Artur Boruc who had a fantastic season last year with the Saints, how much of a difference do players like this have on the team? Artur Boruc has been there, seen it and done it! He’s played for his country over 50 times, he’s played for the top league in Italy, England and Scotland with Celtic, and at Southampton…He brings a vast amount of experience to the team. He’s a big presence, he’s a big keeper and he’s one more player to make the squad bigger, better and stronger. It’s now time for the keepers underneath him to prove themselves and show they’re worthy of a first team place. He’s definitely a good addition to the squad.
