DAVID DUNN / DIRECTOR OF RUGBY READY FOR THE SECOND HALF
Bournemouth Lions have gathered again after the festive season and we are now looking forward to the second half of the season. Having seen all the other teams once, we realise that this is tough Rugby. Physical encounters every week take their toll and it is essential to keep the squad together through the tough part of the season.
THE
We continue to set ourselves targets and we were relatively happy with our league position at the half way stage of the season. Our defeat to Lydney was a disappointment albeit against a side showing a vast improvement on their early season form. Having scored three tries to their one, and their dubious penalty try, we could have expected to finish ahead of our visitors but their new goal kicker proved his worth and we had to settle for a losing bonus point. Our trip to Barking was far more successful. In breaking the journey by paying a visit to our friend Tomas Ford in his new hotel, we ensured we arrived well rested and ready to do battle with a side that had several new recruits on show. However the no nonsense start by our forwards ensured there would be no upsets on the day and we had secured the bonus point victory before half time. Our Christmas double header against Worthing was scuppered by the wet weather and the squad has been affected badly by the viruses that were circulating around over the Christmas break.
DOWN PROFILE
We began the New Year full of optimism and looking forward to doing battle with old enemy at Chinnor. This has not been a happy hunting ground for us over the years so we were very excited to have worked our way into a favourable position as half time approached. However, a disappointing second half resulted in two further tries for us but we came away empty handed in terms of match points.

In terms of news from the squad, it is great to see Riad Lynch back in training after suffering that horrendous knee injury against Redingensians some ten months ago. Meanwhile, Ben Fetherstone is recovering from his shoulder dislocation and he is optimistic about a return to Rugby at some time in the future. Anthony Dunkerley has had his shoulder operation and he is in his rehab programme which will last for several months. Jack Hennings has left our shores on his travels and he received a good send off as he sets off to explore the southern hemisphere. It has also been great to see Tom Dunn who was playing for Bournemouth in the early part of this season making three Premiership appearances for Bath in their Christmas campaign.
THE LANDLORD’S REVIEW
We’ve given our well experienced beer taster, Paul, a quality beer from Ringwood Brewery to taste and review - Ringwood Fortyniner 4.9%. This ‘pale ale’ tastes a bit of caramel but with a dry bitterness. It has a dry but refreshing taste that leaves you wanting more hot food. It accompanied a lamb madras and made a good friend! Overall a good tasting beer that was quite strong - it left me wanting more but that might have been the spicy curry!

We’ve picked two sports related films for our local film expert to view and critique. Dan has worked as a visual effects artist on blockbusters including Star Wars and The Dark Knight and we’ve set him up with another couple of great films to review over a beer and some popcorn.
Invictus 2009 MORGAN FREEMAN, MATT DAMON, TONY KGOROGE This film is adapted from author John Carlin’s book Playing The Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made A Nation. It follows the true story of Mandela the political prisoner-turned-South African president and how he used the 1995 Rugby World Cup as a means of bringing blacks and whites together after decades of violence and mistrust.
What we thought... Director Clint Eastwood delivers this movie in typical sober tones. However, compared with his other work this is paralleled with tension and drama. Invictus may not be rousing enough for some viewers, however Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman do their jobs well portraying the real-life characters with meritable conviction. I found it a little dull but all true stories deserve our attention to the end.
Goon 2012 SEANN WILLIAM SCOTT, JAY BARUCHEL, ALISON PILL Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott) is a small town drop-out who is disgruntled with his job as a bouncer in his local bar. He aspires for the success of minor league hockey player, Ross Rhea (Liev Schreiber). After an incidental fight with an ice hockey thug, he wins and is spotted by the coach of the Halifax Highlanders. Seeing potential in his fighting skills he is drafted into this semi-pro team as a “Goon”, a violent brawler whose only job is to protect the talented players from getting hospitalised by opponents . The only problem is he can’t play hockey and is hounded by the team players for his lack of skill and ability. With encouragement by his hockey obsessed best friend, he quickly becomes a rising star with the crowds leading to a face off with his rival “Goon” Ross ‘The Boss’ Rhea. And to top off this wonderful meat head of a movie, big guys always get the girl.
What we thought... A surprisingly well crafted bit of slapstick comedy with character driven heart.

TUNEAGE
DJ Charles Music to train to As the year 2013 gets into full swing, it’s that time of the month when I keep you motivated in the gym with the tracks that have been rocking the dance floors and turning heads this year around the world!
Differentology - Bunji Garlin This first track is a gem I picked up whilst DJing in Barbados over December. With dancehall roots and a house beat, I love it. Uplifting melodies and a great hook, this track is one of my favorites so far in 2013. I advise you check it out and turn it up.
Wild for the Night - A$AP Rocky Taking on the production of super producer Skrillex, one of the hottest rappers of last year releases ‘Wild for the Night.’ A great punchy track that makes you grit your teeth and nod your head. An especially hot track for motivation in the gym. Check out the LIVE performance by A$AP on the ‘Letterman Show’ on youtube, it’s awesome!
Suit & Tie - Justin Timberlake Feat. Jay Z Justin Timberlake has made a much awaited comeback this year with his debut single ‘Suit & Tie.’ I’ve been a fan of Justin since he went solo and worked with ‘The Neptunes’. This track stands out and sounds very different to the ‘norm’ and features Jay Z (enough said). A funky, feel good track with some horns, looking forward to seeing what else is coming! Until next month, Keep up the hard work! 09

The Game talks exclusively to Premier League and Scotland International player, Danny Fox, about life at the Saints and his move to Bournemouth with his partner and new baby boy. With a career including playing for England under 21’s then onto the Scottish National Squad and with over 300 professional appearances, this Cheshire born left back has established himself as a regular on the south coast Premiership team sheet.
MEETFOXY Congratulations on the birth of your baby boy. How are you getting on with fatherhood? Yeah I’m enjoying it, it’s brilliant, and it’s settled me right down! My partner, Yasmin, has taken the reins and is doing so well. I don’t get a look in! It’s just unbelievable to have a little son and for him to look like me. Many sleepless nights? I conveniently sleep through it! I don’t seem to wake up in the night to hear him. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing. I’m normally a light sleeper too! I wake up when he is mid feed and just try and help out. He doesn’t really cry much though, at the moment. So how are you finding life in the premier league? I’m enjoying it massively. I played before with Burnley which wasn’t too good an experience and at the start of the season with Southampton, it didn’t look like it was going to be good as well. But, we’ve picked up of late and got a few good results under our belt and we’ll be continuing to do that as the season goes on. And how does it compare to life in Scotland top flight? It is chalk and cheese to be honest! No disrespect to the SPL, you play four or five games in a season which are big games in the league against Rangers and then obviously the Champion’s League which we play in as well. But, in the Premier League you’re getting tested every week. No matter who you play against, you’re always going to come up against top players. It is very demanding but it’s where everyone wants to be. It’s very different. And what are the realistic ambitions for the remainder of the season? In my eyes, and I don’t want to be too much of a cynic, I think just keeping our Premier League status and getting a bit of stability back in the club. Then hopefully, we can kick on next season, sign a few new players and continue progressing because it is all about progression as a club and as a team and I think if we can stay in the Premier League this year it will be a great achievement. There are a lot of good teams out there.
13
We are steadily progressing and I think we’ll continue to do that as the season goes on and hopefully give the fans a lot to cheer about at the back end of the season and stay in the premier league.
How do you assess the team’s progress this season? We’ve progressed steadily. We had a tough start, starting with the champion’s (Man City) away, first game of the season. Then Man United at home and then Arsenal, away. There was no rest for us to be honest. I don’t think we would have had it any other way; we came crashing back down to earth with a bang. With the season going so well last year, I think we needed a bit of a wakeup call and we got that. You were recalled to the Scotland squad... talk us through that process? It was a long time coming. I’d not been in the squad for 2 ½ years. I got my first cap and then I thought I would just continue from there and it never happened. But, playing for Southampton with the team and myself doing really well, I think it just came off the back of that. I took it with both hands playing in two World Cup qualifiers. It was a great experience and something I really wanted to do. It is the pinnacle of every footballer’s career to play international football and I definitely want to continue that. And you played a blinder – two assists wasn’t it? Yeh, that’s right. I enjoyed it.
14
Are you confident of another call up in the future? Definitely. There’s a bit of turmoil within the Scottish FA with the manager getting sacked and it was unfortunate because he gave me the chance to get back in the squad but things like that happen in football. Hopefully, I’ll be back in the squad, there’s a game in March so I’ll be looking out for the squad when it gets announced and fingers crossed, I’ll be in it. So back to life at Saints, a few questions about the team.... Who is the biggest joker? Kelvin Davis. Who has the most tricks in their locker? I don’t want to say this but, Adam Lallana. Adz is a top player and I think he’s proven that. It’s unfortunate he’s not playing at the minute (due to injury at the time of interview) but we’ll be a much better team when he is back, definitely. Who is the shining star at the club.... one to look out for in the future? A young lad called Luke Shaw, left back. Really good player, definitely going to be one to watch. Who are the best and worst trainers? Best trainers are Adam Lallana and Jason Puncheon and the worst is Richard Chaplow, laziest man in the world!
Who has the worst threads and needs to update their wardrobe? Jose Fonte, by a mile. Very, very foreign, very European! And who is your best mate at the club? Adam Lallana. We can see you love a tattoo... any more planned? One for my son in a few weeks time. We hear you have moved to Bournemouth? Why did you decide the move here? It was the likes of the lads I am closest to at the club. Adam, Jack Cork; they both live in Bournemouth. My partner is close to their partners so it was an easy decision. Bournemouth’s a lovely place to live with the beach so close, especially in the summer. What are your favourite places in Bournemouth to: EAT? Koh Thai. CHILL? The new coffee shop next to Richmond Classics…Barrocoa PLAY? Adam thinks he’s Mr Bournemouth so he tends to take me out a lot! We go to Priva quite a bit, that’s probably the main place we’ve been to and Alika a few times. Big thanks to Danny and wishing him all the best.

Soul SURFER In 2003 one teenage girl’s life transformed completely after a shark attack in Kauai, Hawaii left her with only one arm. Bethany Hamilton, then 13 years old, survived the attack and she was back in the water less than a month later not letting her terrifying experience dampen her love for the sea and her sport. That fateful day catapulted her into being a global role model, displaying courage and compassion amidst adversity.
18
Since she was a little girl, Bethany surfed the shores of her native Hawaii having access to some of the best waves in the world. She attracted sponsors from an early age and started competing and winning in major amateur level competitions. One morning in October, she was out surfing with some friends. She describes the morning as ‘picture perfect’ with crystal clear waters and fantastic conditions. She was sat a little further out than her friends waiting to catch a wave. Within a split second, a 14 foot tiger shark came up and completely took her arm. She knew she had to get back to the beach in order to try and survive the attack and with the help of her friends, made it back to shore. She lost 60% of her blood and was in a critical condition. After making it through surgery without infection, she eventually recovered believing that her strong faith helped her through the horrific ordeal with a sense of peace and calmness.

Now I am a professional surfer and I am living my dreams. It’s exciting to see how life works out and how good can come out of bad situations. After one month, she was eager to get back into the sea and awaited consent from the doctors. She knew surfing well but for her now, it was learning how to master it with one arm. The first time she tried, she was up on the third wave and rode it all the way in. From that moment, she knew she would be surfing for a long time. Her love of the sport drove her to strengthen her body and re-train and adapt to balancing her body with only one arm. She commented, “For me, the idea of not being able to surf was definitely scarier than the idea of getting back in the water after I lost my arm. To not surf again would be impossible. So for me it was essential to at least try surfing again and to see how it went. And it went good. I’m still doing what I love and scoring surf all over the world, just with one arm.” She continued her pursuit to become a professional surfer winning scores of titles and honours from around the world not to mention her biography and feature film of her story. She has become a face of courage, commitment and motivation to thousands of people around the world to not give up when faced with difficulties and challenges in life.

Training the body in isolated parts means it isn’t as good at coordinating Adding lean muscle mass is force through the whole frame, so for something that many athletes and athletes when it comes to making a gym rats want and need to do. It tackle, sprinting or throwing there are helps create strength and power, lots of weak links that lead to reduced provides armour against impact and performance or injuries. As no one also looks great. There are many ways wants to look like a rag doll on the to add muscle mass, some will work, field I thought I would share how we others will make no difference and build our athletes at The Conditioning provide no reward for all your hard Centre. work. The most common method seems to be the body-part split where I like to split the body into upper and you work a different isolated part of lower and train each twice per week, the body to exhaustion each day. this would probably look like Monday: Monday might be chest and triceps, Upper, Tuesday: Lower, Thursday: Tuesday back and biceps etc. I have Upper, Saturday: Lower. This gives seen this method work, but it tends you plenty of rest days, which is when to come with a couple of problems, your body actually repairs and gets the first being that it takes a lot of bigger. Each session should take no time - usually there is a session every more than 75 minutes including your day, and the second being that the warm up, which should involve more individual doesn’t seem to be “put than just swinging your arms around together” very well.

and touching your toes a couple of times. Each session should start with the major compound exercises and work down to the smaller isolated moves. If you walk into the gym and the first thing you do is curl a 15kg dumbbell there is very little challenge to your body and hormone release = no muscle gain. If instead you do some loaded chin ups your whole upper body is challenged and your hormones run like crazy, this makes all the exercises after it, including curling the 15kg DB’s much more effective.
Advanced Methods Another way to build size for the more advanced lifter is by using tempo reps. You need a good background of lifting before you start these as they tend to make you very sore and are pretty painful to
Russell Jolley, owner of The Conditioning Centre, is a fully accredited S&C coach by the UK Strength & Conditioning Association (UKSCA), Head Strength & Conditioning coach for sportBU at Bournemouth University and coaches hundreds of athletes every week.
AN EXAMPLE ATHLETIC MASS GAIN LOWER BODY SESSION: Block 1: One or two major explosive exercises: Make sure to rest and produce max power; e.g. Box Jump or Hang Clean for 4 sets of 5 Block 2: Primary compound strength exercise: major size and strength builder; such as Back Squat for 4 sets of 8 Block 3: Unilateral accessory exercises: correct imbalances; e.g. Step Up and Lateral Squat for 3 sets of 8 each leg Block 4: Bilateral accessory exercise; Romanian Deadlift for 3 sets of 8 Block 5: Pump Exercise; Sled Pull for 3 x 20m

Most of the exercises are paired up in a block: do a set of, for example, chin ups, then a set of bench press and alternate for the 4 sets. This means you need less rest and can get the session finished quicker. Try not to fail sets on a regular basis, it’s OK to do it sometimes and on the smaller exercises, but regularly grinding reps and failing sets makes it much harder to recover and if you’re competing on a regular basis will reduce your sporting performance.

complete. Tempo reps follow specific timings for each portion, I like a 5-0-1 tempo; this means take 5 seconds on the eccentric, 0 seconds rest and 1 second on the concentric portion of the lift. Have no rest between reps and try to finish the set without stopping. Have 45 seconds rest between sets of 8-10 reps. You’ll need to reduce the weight significantly from your normal reps, probably at least half the weight. This method relies on the blood and waste products remaining in your muscles during the set through prolonged and constant muscle tension, it causes a greater hormonal release and more mass gain. Use if for a 4 week block in the off-season and then return to normal reps, which will feel incredible compared to the burn of tempo reps.

TheO
Creating 5,000 new jobs, encouraging sports participation and boosting local economy are real and accomplished objectives that the London 2012 Games have brought to Britain since the bid was decided in 2005. The remarkable event continues its mission to endorse and grow a sports generation in Britain. Trying a new sport or returning to a sport from the past can be hugely beneficial both mentally and physically. Being active has been proven to reduce stress and depression whilst strengthening your body. We are picking out two disciplines from the 2012 Games, looking back at our achievements and letting you know where you can get involved.
SAILING
TRIATHLON
Sir Ben Ainslie concluded his Olympic chapter of his sailing career in historic style after winning gold in Weymouth in the medal race on 5th August last summer. His fifth and final Games saw the most decorated Olympic sailor in history clinch his fourth gold in an exciting race against Dane, Jonas HoghChristensen.
The famous Brownlee brothers scooped medal places in the gruelling Triathlon on 7th August at the 2012 Games. It was Britain’s 19th gold for Alistair with his brother, Jonny winning the bronze place behind Spain’s Javier Gomez who landed silver. Spending the first half of the year injured, Alistair fought the final 10km run through Hyde Park accompanied by the cheering crowds spurring him on. His brother having incurred a 15 second penalty dug deep for the final 2.5km to hang onto third position. He was given immediate medical attention having collapsed at the finishing line.
The 35-year-old said: “This is an incredible honour. When I set out Olympic sailing 20 years ago, I never would have dreamt this would happen” Whilst he has retired from Olympic sailing, he is continuing his passion for the sport and is set to return to America to fulfil his other childhood dream of competing in the America’s Cup.
GET INVOLVED Being on the water is known to be a great way to reduce stress levels. Sailing any craft requires knowledge, experience and skill and for those starting out, a great way to learn the techniques would be to enrol on a RYA (Royal Yacht Association) course. There are over 1500 sailing clubs across the country offering these courses for all ages and abilities. The physical demands of sailing builds muscles in the arms, shoulders and chest but is also a good ‘workout’ for the brain. Learning to safely and skilfully react to the changing sea conditions improves tactical thinking. www.thewatersportsacademy.com
Alistair was quoted, “The race was unbelievable and the crowds were amazing… It feels a bit underwhelming because Jonny has collapsed, but, no, it is fantastic. I am massively proud of Jonny.”
GET INVOLVED Triathlon is incredibly demanding on the body and involves all the muscle groups in diverse ways. Having three disciplines, the range of exercises reduce the risk of repetitive stress injuries which can happen when focussing on one type of sport. As well as the toning and strength gained from the event, triathlon improves cardio fitness, lowers blood pressure and builds stamina. There are hundreds of triathlon clubs across the UK with some offering taster sessions for people wanting to try it out. Coaches can provide advice on the kit needed for the sport along with training programmes to build your performance. www.resultstriathlon.co.uk

M A N AG E R : A N DY T I B B L E S ( 1 S T T E A M )
The Clown – who keeps team spirits high? Darren Facer without any question not a week goes by without him showing everyone his pants. Best Tekkers – Who has the skills to pay the bills?
Ferndown Sports FC were founded in 2003 with one team playing in the Dorset league. We now have three teams playing in Bournemouth Saturday Divisions 1, 3 and 6.
Oly Bolton – The trademark Bolton moves have defenders every time (See left photo) The Cheat – who loves a dive? We are quite lucky we don’t have anyone that dives! If it was a case of taking a tumble for a penalty then it would be centre forward, Shaun Steer. The lightweight – Who’s first to let the side down? Who misses the most games? It has to be Oli Rendle. His busy social calendar means that he will miss 4-5 games a season guaranteed. Mr Vain – who absolutely rates themselves? Goalkeeper - Lee Houseago. The shades, the tight tops, designer watch, sports car! Enough said... Biggest liability on and off the pitch? The player most likely to cause havoc is Darren Facer on and off the pitch! Extravagant celebrations or walking around outside in nothing but his towel! Worst Dress Sense – Who needs to update their threads? Lacelles Richardson is known for some so called trendy outfits! Biggest Bottle Job – Who always ducks out of a tackle? Currently playing with the reserves, striker Kevin Crabb, who is 6ft and has the tendency to duck out of a header (sorry Kev!). Great striker of the ball though with both feet.

Despite losing to Wigan Athletic in our FA Cup Third Round replay and ending our incredible 18 match unbeaten run, the spirit in the camp is still high. Obviously the lads were gutted that we couldn’t beat the previous unbeaten record, but to equal it is a feat that should not go unrecognised. In my 24-year career, I have never even neared such an achievement, and when I look around at the squad now I can see why we have achieved it.

The camaraderie in the dressing room is one of the best I have ever seen, and despite having lots of long, tough away trips due to the northern nature of the League, I can honestly say I enjoy them all. We all have a laugh – the management and backroom staff included – but we know when to be serious and work hard as we are all pulling in the same direction.

The game at Wigan in particular, will be one that will stick out in my memory as I honestly feel we matched the Premier League side all over the park. A replay was the least we deserved, and the fact that we are disappointed that we lost to a Premier League side shows how far we have come.

The support we have had over the past few months has also been exceptional. To see a full house here against both Yeovil and Wigan, as well as seeing the queues of fans at the ticket office recently is incredible and makes us want to strive to work even harder. I only hope now that as we enter the crunch period of the season, the fans continue to support the boys with every kick of the ball as we look to end the season on a high.
