“…the tough get going”, according to the saying and, for Poole Pirates’ supremo Matt Ford, there was never a truer phrase. Last month we catalogued a season that has been, so far, fraught with disaster, misfortune and bitter disappointment for speedway’s most successful side. It had left the mighty Pirates in a lowly position amongst their Elite League rivals yet, somehow, the resolve and dogged determination of a team that refuse to be beaten dazzled their opponents with a winning streak in June that just about set them up for a dramatic return to the top and put them back in contention for a play-off place.
“WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH...”
It was a remarkable turn of events, made even more noteworthy by the fact that, on at least one occasion, the Pirates had to cover for up to five absentees out of their chosen seven riders. Ford hailed his battling, war torn stars and their deputies as heroes. “I have to tell you that the riders Neil (Middleditch) and I have been working with recently have been outstanding. They could not have given more to the cause and they managed to throw the formbook out of the window to defy the odds and bring home some big away wins which has made all the difference”.
CHRIS HOLDER – PIRATES SKIPPER WILL BE A BIG LOSS TO THE SIDE AFTER SUFFERING MULTIPLE INJURIES IN A TRACK CRASH AT THE BEGINNING OF JULY.
FAST FOR-WARD
Pirates’ number one, Darcy Ward, wasted no time in getting back to top form as he made a dramatic comeback to racing after seven weeks on the side-lines following a broken shoulder. The 21 year old Aussie sensation claimed his first Speedway Grand Prix victory in round seven of the World Championship series at Copenhagen on Saturday June 29th. Jubilant fans were delighted to see the track star back in action as he began his campaign to regain position in the championship standings after his forced lay-off.
However, the Pirates’ woes continued in dramatic and frightening fashion at the beginning of July in the final race of a thrilling encounter at Coventry’s Brandon Stadium. Needing a maximum heat win from Turbo Twins Chris Holder and the newly recovered number one, Darcy Ward, an horrific crash saw skipper and World Champion Holder catapulted into the safety barrier after picking up grip on the outside track, seconds after making what would have been a match winning pass. Instead, the Pirates star was left with multiple injuries including a fractured hip and shoulder which will require a lengthy lay off and recovery. But remarkably, as we head into the peak of summer, Ford knows that the show must go on. He still believes it is a special time of year and one when Poole Speedway really comes to life at Wimborne Road. “This is a seaside town that always has an extra buzz in the holidays,” he reminds us. “When the sun shines in Poole it’s all about the ‘S’ factor… Sun, Sea, Sand and, of course, our Speedway!” For the Pirates, the going just got tough again – it’s time for them to get going!
04
Having effectively missed out on four of this year’s rounds due to the injury, it was only Ward’s third full GP appearance of the year and he was in sparkling form on the night, taking 19 out of a possible 21 points. His performance was characterised by some trade-mark thrilling passes over his equally world class rivals. The Grand Prix series had missed the excitement that Ward generates on track and, just has he does on a weekly basis for the Pirates, he didn’t disappoint in Denmark. The Pirates welcomed their number one back to the fold with open arms in July when they re-assembled their side which had been ravaged by early season injuries. Ironically, on the night Darcy returned, Pirates’ World Champion Chris Holder became the latest victim of the injury curse at Coventry on 5th July.

CHANGE FOR THE BETTER AT BOURNEMOUTH RUGBY CLUB LAST SEASONS RELEGATION SCARE OVER - NEW AMBITIONS FOR THE FUTURE.
PHOTOGRAPHY: ALEX WILLIAMSON PHOTOGRAPHY
It was always going to be a tough challenge last season for the Lions of Bournemouth RFC to play in National League Division 2 South (at a level equivalent to football’s old fourth division) and it certainly proved to be a major step up in a number of ways for the Chapel Gate club in 2012/13. However, not only did the 1st XV players show the commitment, character and capability to survive, but off the pitch other plans were initiated under the guidance of chairman Denis Eveleigh to strengthen the whole club for the future. Clear priorities were established. New faces in the management team were needed, growth in income was seen as essential (coupled with continued discipline on the cost side), plus a ‘One Club’ strategy to achieve greater cohesion between the thriving Youth & Mini section and the senior teams. “With a lot of hard effort over the summer, I’m pleased to say we’ve made progress on all those fronts” said Denis. “But enhancing things on the playing side too is as important as anything. After all, we’re in it for the rugby”. The rugby side certainly got a boost last month when its new director of rugby, Budge Pountney, was

announced. The ex-Scotland captain and Northampton Saints player brings a wealth of rugby experience to Bournemouth. He has already started training with the players, assisted by a high quality coaching team which includes new faces Paul Dunne and Crispin Cormack, as well as forwards specialist Tim Collier who provides continuity from last season along with Dan Connolly to help the backs. Budge has already made clear his objective of taking the club to a new level, saying that “We’re going to raise the bar on performance for all the players”. Performance is a mantra for the new Lions chief and he will be seeking some new recruits for his squad during the pre-season period so that the strongest possible start can be made to the 2013/14 campaign.“ Our aim is to avoid any threats of relegation next year and to establish ourselves in the top half of our division. From there, we can look to build again”. Change is clearly underway for Bournemouth RFC, the leading rugby club in the region, and so far it seems for the better. Things will be tested properly for the first time when the new season starts with the home game v. Taunton Titans on 7 September.

As
I sit here in this café looking for inspiration, I notice the magazine headline on the table in front of me ‘Dream beach body this summer, celebrities cutting carbs!’ For me as a fitness professional, I am often confronted by people in pursuit of their ‘dream body’ with the same ‘carb (carbohydrate) cutting’ ideal as the modern celebrity. However, I am often concerned that with the strong media promotion behind ‘carb cutting’, the theory behind this nutrition philosophy often gets swept aside. With this in mind the following short article will attempt to explore the carb cutting phenomenon in further detail and provide a summarised overview of its ideologies. Carbohydrates are organic compounds which release glucose to provide the body with energy. We then store 75% of glucose as glycogen throughout our working muscle and tissues. Therefore, theory would suggest if we cut carbohydrates from our diets then, like driving your car with no fuel, it is only a matter of time before the engine (our immune system and muscles) will break down. The chain effect of reducing carbohydrate intake starts with a reduced mental and physical capability, which subsequently weakens the immune system (autoimmune disease) and, impairs the body’s ability to fight off illness and cancerous cells. So, in light of this evidence why do we often hear of healthy individuals that live on carb free diets? To answer this, let’s take the discussion back 2.5 million years, when entire civilisations survived virtually carbohydrate free. How? Well consider that the fat storage capability in humans is almost unlimited, but in contrast only 150 grams of glycogen can be stored at any one time. Therefore understanding how these civilisations lived long, full lives is simple, surviving principally off highly saturated proteins and fats such as grass fed meats and wild fish, their bodies had no energy source (glucose) so instead the unlimited fat stores were utilised for fuel. Of course, in pre-historic times there was certainly no obesity crisis like we have today. With their bodies eating their own fat stores for energy, they, like the modern celebrity, would have seen the inches melt

away. However also consider that back then movement patterns were limited in comparison to today, there was certainly no circuit classes or boot camps around in those days. Recent studies have shown to cope with the demands of high impact exercise we must consume between 30-60 grams of carbohydrates for every 30-60 minutes of training. If we fail to do this the body will be malnourished or ‘catabolic’ releasing stress hormones which actually break down muscle tissue. Fuelling on a high protein and fat based diet might still get you through the odd exercise session, as the body will survive on its already pre-stored glycogen. But, with time, the warning signs of lethargy and illness from low glycogen levels will rear its head. Therefore, for avid exercisers, low carb diets with the incorrect protein/fat balance are very dangerous, even fatal. For those that have done their reading, you will notice that the authors of high protein/low carb diets such as the primal blueprint endorse the benefits of exercise for lasting wellness, but only recommend 15 to 40 minutes of ‘heavy lifting’ exercise twice a week to avoid autoimmune disease and illness. However, with the government currently recommending we do a minimum of 2.5 hours of exercise a week for increased health, an interesting inconsistency starts to emerge for ‘no carb’ followers. Especially when you consider that most ‘no carb’ diet followers are often those that have physical occupations, play sport or attend the gym 3-5 days a week and train for 60+ minutes. ‘No carb’ diets may work as a great tool to burn body fat in the right low intensity conditions, but if you consider that over 25 million of us in the UK exercise regularly or play sport, a strict long-term adherence to this lifestyle would only lead to widespread illness and, a subsequent 30% increase in the chance of premature death. In light of the presented evidence it can be stated that achieving a ‘dream body’ through nutrition whilst maintaining optimal health and fitness is still best attained through a monitored calorie intake and, a strict adherence to regularly eating all macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats).

WE’VE PICKED TWO SPORTS RELATED FILMS FOR OUR LOCAL FILM EXPERT TO VIEW AND CRITIQUE. DAN MCRAE HAS WORKED AS A VISUAL EFFECTS ARTIST ON BLOCKBUSTERS INCLUDING STAR WARS AND THE DARK KNIGHT AND WE’VE SET HIM UP WITH ANOTHER COUPLE OF GREAT FILMS TO REVIEW WITH A BEER AND POPCORN.
The Mighty Ducks 1992
The Wrestler 2008
In what mirrors Rourke’s own life Randy, “The Ram” Robinson is a retired pro wrestler superstar whose image is immortalised in computer games and action figures. 20 years have passed and as his fame has diminished and age has caught up, Randy begins to look at his life and realises scratching around for a living by brawling for small crowds in high school gyms and community centers around New Jersey, are a far cry from his glory days. After a heart attack, he gets a job at a Deli in an attempt to build a broken relationship with his daughter and tries to convince ageing local stripper Cassidy (Marisa Tomei) to settle down with him in his trailer. With every attempt to be a good man and do the right thing he still has a fire in him to get one more shot back in the ring. After an invite of a high-profile rematch with a lifelong nemesis, Randy is forced to weigh up his mortality against his need to get back in the ring and hear the roar and energy of a raging crowd. Nominated for two Oscars for best Actor & Best Supporting Actress, Bafta winner and Golden Globe award this heartfelt coming of age film is a real character driven plot and will bring a tear to the eyes of even the toughest bad asses out there including me!
What we thought… This is one of my favourite films of all time that can stand next to Rocky, Raging Bull and The Fighter. Somewhat of a comeback film for 80s heartthrob Mickey Rourke, who after years of drink and drugs and some cosmetic surgery that could only have gone wrong, we have a broken man who has fallen very far indeed from his hey day.

Well, to give you the plot outline, Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) is a high powered attorney who is sentenced to community service coaching hockey after a drunk driving offense. The team he has to coach are at the bottom of the league. Gordon Bombay just happened to be a Hockey player in an elite team called ‘The Hawks’ in the same league before a failed attempt at a penalty shot lost his team the championship and he quit from embarrassment. With the help of Bombay and some financial backing the ‘Ducks’ start to gel as a team and rise through the league to finally get a shot at the championship where they are to face Bombay’s old team “The Hawks” I wonder if this match will end on a penalty shoot out? This light hearted family film is great fun for the younger kids with a strong emphasis on team building, camaraderie and the fun you can have being part of a team. For the older viewer it glasses over some of the more plot driven elements in favour of keeping the film extremely watered down. However said, it is Disney and if you like your contact sport films covered in sugar and fairy dust then this film is perfect for the hidden child in all you grumpy old gits.
What we thought… No points for originality, this film literally paints a note by note classic formulated tale of underdog team lead by misfit coach who battle against all odds to finally get a chance at the big time and guess what, (spoiler alert) yep they win! But some films are so bad they are good, and with The Mighty Ducks it spawned two further sequels, an animated series and even a real life Hockey Team! How do Disney do it?

We currently have slackline clubs running in Poole, Brighton and the Nottingham area. Check out the Maverick Slacklines Facebook page for updates on clubs and sessions happening near you – www.facebook.com/maverickslacklines Maverick Slacklines have a range of products available in their online shop. Slackline sets start at around £55. BENEFITS: Slacklining is a continuous balance discipline and great for improving core strength, co-ordination, flexibility and focus. While Slacklining, you use your core muscles to uphold your centre of balance and your arms and legs as a counterbalance. As your muscles are constantly working to keep you on the line, your body is getting a continuous workout. The stronger you become in your core, the less you need to do with your arms. Although, once you can stay up for a while, just holding your arms up in the air with constant minor adjustments will get your shoulders burning! Once balancing has been mastered, slackliners can tackle freestyle moves such as jumps and flips. A way of training on a slackline that is very beneficial to general fitness involves stillness, for example holding yoga positions on the line. Suddenly seemingly simple stretches become an intense training exercise in strength and flexibility. One of the best things about Slacklining is that it is a very social sport. It only takes a couple of minutes to set up and get a session going with friends on the park, at the beach or in your garden.

FIT TIPS
TRACY KISS
Tracy is a 25 year old mum of two, Millie and Gabriele. A couple of months ago, she had breast surgery to remove her PIP implants which were deemed dangerous after a worldwide surgery scandal broke a couple of years ago. She had to take four weeks of total bed rest in order to heal and wasn’t allowed to lift so much as a kettle let alone her one year old son. As a mother who is conscious of her health, we spoke to Tracy about her experience, how she regained her fitness and got back into the shape she prefers her body to be in. It’s safe to say that I’ve been more than a little lazy recently, gathered several pounds of unwanted weight and not exercised at all for the best part of two months; summer is upon us and I was panicking at the thought of slipping into a bikini. So what did I do to combat my inability to exercise? I looked into supplements as a kick start to building my exercise back up and shedding those excess pounds in time for the sunshine. As I’m vegetarian, I don’t often take vitamins and supplements as the capsules always tend to be made from gelatin which is animal fat and the thought of it turns my stomach, so browsing around online I was pleasantly surprised when I stumbled across Voltz Raspberry Ketones. Basically, these natural and fruity supplements boost your energy making it less effort to work out, make you feel great from the 100% natural ingredients AND help to burn fat at an accelerated rate. Wow! They’re also made in the UK which is a massive plus for me as it gives me the reassurance that all safety checks and food hygiene tests have been carried out, are up to scratch and of the highest quality. I found this information online about the supplements from Voltz which provided me with the knowledge I needed. The instructions on the back were clear and helpful recommending you take two tablets each day, one before breakfast and one before lunch. The bottle contains 60 tablets which lasts a whole month and is perfect for my
summer health kick. I loved that they were not powdery or disgusting tasting like some smelly herbal vitamins on the market, and being easy to swallow, meant that I could take them discreetly when I was out at lunch without gagging or getting them caught in my throat. So, my plan was to begin working out a little at a time as I still couldn’t lift or do sit ups but I have an exercise bike at home and I planned to cycle for half an hour a day with the help of my Raspberry Ketones. I weighed myself at the start of the week and would do the same at the end and report on and share my results. On paper, Voltz Raspberry Ketones looked amazing and the answer to my prayers, but, how would they fare to get my beach body ready with just half an hour of gentle cycling a day? My diet will remain the same, I eat fairly healthily anyway and I planned on only doing half an hour of gentle exercise each day as it was an amount of time and I could stick to and manage whilst healing. If I didn’t have my exercise bike, I would have gone for a halfhour walk instead or made a conscious effort to increase my movement throughout the day; perhaps a spring clean of the house or some hoovering and hanging out the washing.

WHAT IS RASPBERRY KETONE?
VOLTZ RASPBERRY KETONES ARE SUITABLE FOR VEGETARIANS

For years, we have been drawn to raspberries because of their vibrant colour and sweet, tangy taste. Nutritionists are now learning that these fabulous fruits also contain ketones and believe that they are as healthy and beneficial to the body as they are delicious! Leading US Physician, author, and talk show host, Dr. Oz, even recommends raspberry ketones for aiding in weight loss. When speaking on the topic of raspberry ketone supplements he stated that they were “The #1 miracle in a bottle to burn your fat.” In fact, raspberry ketones seem to be one of nature’s best kept secrets for helping people live healthily, boost their energy, and feel great!

Diary UPDATE: Day 1 To make my results fair, I am beginning day one without taking the Raspberry Ketones, this way I can check my starting weight and measure my level of fitness before and after by tracking my progress on the exercise bike’s monitor. Day One: I am aged 25, 5ft 8”and weight 9st 7lbs Stepping on the scales this afternoon I was a little shocked to see that I am weighing in at 9st7lbs and am 5ft8” tall. I usually tend to weigh between eight and a half to nine stones, but since my surgery, my weight has increased by having larger breast implants fitted and not being able to exercise. I am hoping to lose between 1-2lbs across this week whilst taking the Raspberry Ketones; I will be exercising at the same time every day and weighing myself at the same time of day in one week to keep the results as accurate as possible. With no supplements my first attempt at thirty minutes of gentle cycling burnt 256 calories over 11.25km of cycling and I’m panting for breath, tired and sweaty! Oh dear! Roll on tomorrow… UPDATE: Day 2 So today I started taking my supplements, one before breakfast and one before lunch and I mounted my exercise bike with a spring in my step and found my half hour cycle noticeably less effort than yesterday. I had so much more drive to keep peddling faster and for longer instead of getting tired and slacking then picking up again like I did yesterday. UPDATE: Day 3 I feel so incredibly pumped right now thanks to my Voltz Supplements. I found it so easy cycling today that I went OVER my half an hour by mistake whilst playing Candy Crush Saga on my phone and peddling – whoops! Using the supplements has made burning fat so much easier and sustainable as it gives me the boost to go longer, raises my metabolism and because it doesn’t destroy me and leave me puffing and panting, I’m actually looking forward to my daily cycle. It’s not a chore, it’s exciting and I can’t wait for my end of week weigh-in in four days time. The time is flying! UPDATE: Day 4 I’m into the swing of things today and took my supplements before my ride whilst I watched the TV in the lounge and the time flew. I totally forgot I was working out because it was so effortless, I breezed through it and didn’t feel tired or achy at all; just full of energy and alert. I could have easily cycled on for another half an hour but

I refrained as I’m testing just thirty minutes of exercise a day and want to keep my results fair by staying consistent. UPDATE: Day 5 Today’s half hour cycle was great, I put on some music videos and peddled away whilst playing Candy Crush Saga on my iphone and the minutes flew by. My legs were a little tired from yesterday so I didn’t manage to beat yesterday’s score which was disappointing but I worked up a great sweat and felt amazing afterwards. UPDATE: Day 6 I literally dripped with sweat after today’s workout and feel so good it’s beyond words. I’m full of energy, I’m standing tall, feeling body confident and loving working out; Voltz has given me that nudge to keep going and push myself further and I actually can’t wait to step on the scales after tomorrows workout! UPDATE: Day 7 I had a long day today and felt exhausted by the time I arrived home this evening. I’ve been coughing, sneezing and feeling weak since this morning as it seems that I’ve caught my son’s cold. Taking my final supplement for the week I got onto my bike and peddled my legs off with the very last ounce of strength that I had left and was surprised to have gone as far as I did, but the supplements really perked me up. Having finished my week of exercise I had one final challenge to meet, my weigh-in with the bathroom scales and the moment of truth. Dripping with sweat from my final workout and in desperate need of a shower, I stood square on to the scales, took a breath and stepped on. The needle spun across the digits rising rapidly and clanking to a halt when it hit 9st 3.5lbs, a whole three and a half pounds LESS than my weight of 9st 7lbs just seven days before.
“THANKS TO VOLTZ I LOST 3.5LBS IN ONE WEEK! IT MADE WORKING OUT EASIER, GAVE ME MORE ENERGY AND DOUBLED THE WEIGHT I’D HOPED TO LOSE. IT EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS IN EVERY WAY. A GREAT EXAMPLE OF A NATURAL UK SUPPLEMENT AT ITS FINEST!” The biggest smile spread its way across my face in disbelief. I was hoping for a one or two pound loss at most in line with an average suggested weekly weight loss but I’d only taken gentle exercise, however with the help of my Voltz Raspberry Ketones, I almost doubled my expectations; which when you look at it, it actually isn’t that unexpected at all, as the whole purpose of the supplements is to assist the metabolism and make shedding fat a lot easier. So really, it simply did exactly what it said on the tin. How very refreshing and straight forward!

R E P U S What is African Mango
The Internet has been buzzing about the African mango supplement for weight loss. Irvingia gabonensis (IG) is the Latin name of the tree grown in Central and West Africa that produces a fruit similar to a mango and nicknamed African mango, wild mango, dika nut, or bush mango. IG contains 50% fat, 26.4% total carbohydrates, 7.5% protein, and 14% fibre. In areas where IG grows, its flesh is widely eaten. But it’s the seed or nut (fresh or dried) that contain the supposedly powerful ingredients. Sold almost exclusively online, the seed extract comes in powder, liquid, and capsule supplements. Taking the supplement 30-60 minutes before meals will reduce appetite, lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides, reduce fat cell growth, boost the breakdown of fats, and improve blood sugar control. It is highly effective at sequestering fat and cholesterol and ridding them from the body. African Mango is taking the diet world by storm. IG is a powerful anti-oxidant that can help to promote a healthy weight. It is the seeds from the African Mango which have been reported to have powerful fat burning benefits. These may help you lose weight by increasing your metabolism and reducing hard to shift stomach fat. African Mango is very high in fibre which also helps aid digestion. African Mango Capsules are the latest breakthrough product in the weight loss supplement industry. This product has been tipped to be more popular and more effective than the world famous Acai Berry! We have already had some good feedback and customer reviews on our African Mango products. Especially our high strength African Mango 6000mg. It may cost more but its definitely worth the extra for the highest strength & best quality Mango in the UK.
What Does the Research Show?
Several studies have shown that supplements containing IG extract can aid in weight loss, lower blood cholesterol levels, and improve diabetes control. Researchers suggest it is the high fibre content of the seed that competes with cholesterol and helps remove it. In one study, people who took an IG extract, given twice daily, lost weight and had an improvement in metabolic conditions linked to insulin resistance. Consult your health care provider before taking African mango supplements or any other supplements. Your health care provider needs a complete record of everything you’re taking, in order to watch out for any reactions.

R E K A M D DARCY WAR
20
MEET THE PRO The Game talks exclusively to Darcy Ward, Poole Pirates newly appointment captain. At 21 years old, Darcy is the youngest ever skipper for the team and with a string of impressive titles including U21’s World Champion, we ask him about the current season, his love for his sport, his recent injury and his hopes for the future. As we’ve seen this season, Speedway comes with a lot of bumps and breaks, what’s the worst injury you’ve had? I’ve not long been back from breaking my shoulder blade and I was out for 2 months so I think that’s got to be the worst… it really hurt. I’ve had a couple of others that weren’t too serious, but the shoulder blade was definitely a killer to my season plus it was my first year in the Grand Prix too so not great for me.
Hi Darcy, thanks for talking to us… what got you into Speedway to start with? My dad was a bit of a local where he used to ride. I came along and did a bit of Motocross but was getting injured too much so he put me on his spare bike and it went from there. His passion turned into my passion. Congratulations on taking over the captaincy of the Poole Pirates following Chris’s recent accident. You are the youngest captain ever in the clubs 65 year history. How does it feel to be leading the team? It’s good. We would obviously rather Chris be here; he can’t be replaced, but I guess I have to step up and it’s a privilege to have a role in such a good club. My job is the same, I still go out and do my best and try and get the boys motivated which can sometimes be tough.
Your job means that you travel the world. Do you like travelling to all the different locations you race in and where is your favourite track? We are in airports like you wouldn’t believe. My bum is always on a seat whether it is in a plane or a car. It sucks sometimes but it’s part of the job and you have to make do. I love travelling to Poland. The sport is at it’s the biggest there and it’s always good to perform to such a big crowd and they really go off there! My favourite track is Torun.
You won the World Under 21’s Championships twice, how did it feel to be best in the world? Unexpected. It was my first year in Speedway throughout Europe so to go in and do so well and walk away with a title like that with so many names that have all been through it, was really cool. Obviously, it’s made a good background for my career starting off like that so it probably led me on to where I am now. Last season, there was a lot of reliance on you and Chris, how do you think the team has performed so far this season? Up and down. Injuries have not gone our way this season but you have to keep on with what you’ve got. Poole always makes a good team and we do currently have a great team but sometimes it just doesn’t happen and no one can put a mark on why. We need to pick the season up. You have a well publicised great partnership with Chris, with him now out, who do you see as your partner up front? Hard to say. I think Chris and I are a bit special! We know each other really well and we have a lot of trust in each other. I know how he rides and he knows how I ride so it’s a bit of a downer with him out but, I am sure there will be a good partnership that will turn out well and help the team.
Do you travel home back to Australia in between seasons? Yeah, I’m still with my parents back in Australia when I’m there so it’s pretty cool. I don’t get to talk to them much or see them when I’m over here, I’m pretty flat out so it’s always nice to go home. I’m sure at the end of the 4 months, they’re pretty sick of me so they like to get rid of me again but when the season’s finished they love to see me come back.
“POOLE IS GOOD. I WASN’T HERE THE FIRST YEAR SO WHEN I ARRIVED, I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT BUT NOW I’M HERE, I DON’T THINK I WOULD EVER LEAVE. IT’S THE CLOSEST THING TO AUSSIE IN ENGLAND.”
Poole Speedway is well known as an adrenaline fuelled evening of top racing action, can you sum up how it feels to you when you’re on a winning streak in front of the supporters? It’s cool; we’ve got a really good fan base here, probably one of the best. It’s always nice to put on a show and we always go out there and try our best anyway so it’s not like we come here and do any different. We sometimes pull moves that you wouldn’t do away because you feel more comfortable at your home track; it’s the place to be.
21
Do you take part in any other sports? Yes, I think Motocross is the next best thing. I do a lot of that and I’ve been injured from that too which Matt (Ford) wasn’t very happy about! Beside that, I don’t really get time to do much else. I’m travelling and riding pretty much every day so if we get a day off, I don’t mind sitting on the couch and doing nothing!
NEW PIRATES CAPTAIN, DARCY WARD, GETTING READY TO LEAD THE TEAM OUT TO THE TRACK
Do you have a training regime that you stick to when racing? I was for a bit when I was injured but since coming back, I haven’t had time. If I have a day off, I definitely don’t want to go to the gym so I’ve been a bit slack but I’m sure when I get a couple of days off, I’ll get back into it. I feel like I’m pretty fit anyway. The riding we do keeps us fit and we don’t really need to do too much extra. What do you think of Poole and the local area? It’s good. I wasn’t here the first year so when I arrived, I didn’t know what to expect but now I’m here, I don’t think I would ever leave. It’s the closest thing to Aussie in England. We’ve had some great weather too and I’m not planning to move.
22
What’s your favourite place to… Eat? Nando’s at Tower Park. Play? Chris and I have a jet ski down at Wessex Marine so we love going there. Chill? Probably where I live at ‘Middlo’s’ (Neil Middleditch, Manager). I’ve got everything there; I’ve got my bikes and a track and everything I need so I never get bored for something to do. Finally, what’s the focus now for you and the team for the remainder of the season? I think as long as we win our home meetings, which isn’t always easy, but we need to do that. I guess that is the goal for now. I think we are still yet to settle down as a team, so once we settle and pick up an away point here and there combined with a bit of motivation, I’m sure we’ll get on a roll. So, the focus is just winning a home and when we’re away, anything we can get. Thank you for talking to us and we wish you, the team and crew the best of luck for the rest of the season and our best wishes to Chris for a speedy recovery.

The Game talks to Guy Cribb - local and global pro windsurfer, winner of 13 British titles and expert tutor to thousands around the world, about the windsurfing scene on the south coast. Name Guy Cribb Sponsors INtuition, Holiday Extras, Neil Pryde, JP-Australia, Animal and Adidas Originals Eyewear Thanks for talking to us, Guy. What got you into windsurfing and how long have you been doing it? I got into windsurfing in the early ‘80s when it was still held at sailing clubs - at the time every sailor aspired to be a windsurfer, but soon after that, windsurfing got radical, equipment evolved and we went from a light wind sailing sport to an extreme high wind sport, leaving sailing clubs behind for beaches with surf. So I’ve been windsurfing for about 30 years and got into it by being a member of a yacht club in Poole Harbour as a kid.
POOLE HARBOUR IS ARGUABLY THE BEST PLACE TO LEARN TO WINDSURF IN THE UK AND BOURNEMOUTH AND POOLE’S BEACHES ARE BEAUTIFULLY SCENIC AND SAFE TO DEVELOP YOUR SKILLS
28
What is it about windsurfing that makes it your favourite sport? The challenge - it is never easy, there are so many factors - the wind, the sea, the surf, tuning the equipment, it’s just a constant battle and I revel in the feeling of aggression and adrenalin rushing in me when I face serious challenges! The weather - I love it when there’s a massive storm and we’re the only people out at sea. The public think windsurfing is a light wind summer sport because that’s when they see it on the beaches, but that’s not really windsurfing- that’s people learning to windsurf. Real windsurfing takes place when there are wild storms thrashing the beaches, but there’s never anyone around then to see what a mad day we’re having! Check it out on youtube! The perfection - when you get something right, it’s incredible. So many things have to come together in that moment to make it work - the precision timing in action sports is insane, and the consequences of getting it wrong are both hilarious and harsh. The speed - I’m usually windsurfing at 30-40 knots- that’s faster than any speedboat/jet ski can go in rough water, let alone any other kind of sailing boat. It always feels good to be the fastest boat on the water. You’ve travelled a lot of the world teaching and competing, where’s the best place you’ve been and why? People often ask me this and I usually say Gnarloo in Western Australia, because it’s one of the best spots in the world for big wave riding, but I have not been there yet so for me it’s my favourite place as I am still dreaming of it, it’s still a big challenge. The world has so many great waves, but for me I prefer a stormy sky with clouds rushing past, so Cornwall or the west coast of Ireland would probably be my favourite spots, even though I spend more time sailing in Hawaii, Australia and Brazil.
Tell us about competitions and any wins that stand out for you? The first big win is always special and that was becoming British Youth Champion in 1988. After that there were loads but some special ones would have been, despite equipment failure, going onto win. Although Gear failure is also the worst way to lose too - and that’s more common! Long after I stopped competing to develop my INtuition coaching courses around the world, I came back to the professional circuit in the UK and won the three major events I entered in three different disciplines - that felt good! So, my favourite win would have been my first and last big events. The competitions I took part in were the professional British circuits and the professional world tour, World and European Championships. Someone asked me the other day if that was really hard work - I had to laugh as all I remember was a nonstop party and awesome travel! What kind of fitness levels does windsurfing require? Windsurfing fit, that’s all that counts - I coach windsurfing to Olympic athletes from other sports, pro sportsmen, and triathlon champions - all sorts, but no matter how fit they are, windsurfing still destroys them! It’s a non-stop all round body work out - I see people wasting their lives in gyms building individual big muscles to look good, but they’re weak and can’t windsurf! In the Olympics, the windsurfers and cyclists were the fittest athletes, and the windsurfing event used the same energy as running a halfmarathon every day for 12 days. However if you’re getting into windsurfing, of course you don’t need to be fit, but you’ll soon get toned! It’s easy to learn but a bitch to master! What do you think of the conditions in Bournemouth and along the coast? We have some great conditions locally - one of the best wave sailing places in the UK, and certainly the best in the south of England is Kimmeridge Bay - we can get 6 metre high surf pumping here in a winter storm. It’s also great having so many other boats around partly to go and show off our great sport to them, and partly so if something goes wrong you’re likely to be rescued!
Have you ever had any bad accidents? Yes, many years ago at Kimmeridge in a big wave I got my leg crushed in between my gear - my calf muscle split down both sides causing mild compartment syndrome. For a while, they thought they might need to remove some muscle, but other than that, I’ve just broken my toes a lot and my nose quite often, so it’s actually a very safe sport! What surf reports do you look at to check out best conditions? Windguru.com and magicseaweed.com Where is a good place for people to learn and what age can you start? Poole Harbour is the best place to learn locally or a warm water destination overseas. Kids can start from about 7 or 8, younger than that and their concentration isn’t really focussed enough to persevere and they’re not really physical enough. I’ve got my kids into swimming and surfing so that they have the water confidence they’ll need to handle windsurfing in the future. What’s your favourite hot spot in the surrounding area? Kimmeridge Bay when there’s big surf and strong north westerly winds, you’ll find us on ‘The Bench’ (local reef break). Finally, give us three benefits of windsurfing… Escapism like no other - the concentration required takes you mind off everything else in life. Challenge - so many people plod through life avoiding challenges, how utterly boring! Windsurfing is a challenge every time- it’s highly frustrating so immensely rewarding. Windsurfers are ultra determined and can walk into any meeting room supremely confident as they know what it’s like to face real sporting challenges. Energy - being in the eye of a storm, beaten by surf and wiped out by strong winds is more invigorating than any other form of energy or entertainment I know. Windsurfing is an addiction, not a hobby. Thanks for talking to us Guy, we wish you continued success in your sport and career.

Paul Noble, an experienced Poole based physiotherapist with bags of knowledge about how to diagnose and treat sports injuries galore, was pleased to turn 40 this year. The mere mention of his upcoming 40th a few years ago was enough to send him into a spin of denial; he’d laugh it off and change the subject… that was of course until his life changed dramatically. Aged 38, extremely fit and weeks away from the Edinburgh marathon, he was struck down whilst at work with a blood clot deep in the left hand side of his brain. He recalls what those first minutes were like...
D E R I P S N I E B
I was alone in my room waiting for the next patient, taking the precious two minutes gap to write up the previous guy’s notes and having a quick look at the next case to plan my treatment a bit more effectively. It was then that my world started to change. I noticed a severe shift in my vision, vertical diplopia it’s called and a feeling of being incredibly spaced out. I looked at my reflection in the mirror and I was stunned to see my own image so distorted, one eye felt like it was half way down my cheek and the other eye up in the middle of my forehead. I started sweating profusely and I was pleased to be sitting down. The whole episode lasted 40 seconds and I knew then that something serious had happened, I vowed to get it checked out rather than ignoring it which is my usual strategy. I lay on the treatment couch, the bright light shining down, and the room spinning gently. Surely this will wear off in a minute I thought. I was feeling pretty spaced out and I knew I had to splash some water on my face to wake me up. I had two more patients till the weekend and anyway it was too late to cancel them now, right? I never made it to the sink in the bathroom; God only knows what I must have looked like meandering down the corridor, bouncing off the walls, clutching at their smooth surfaces for support. Drunk, I guess, well either that or off my face on drugs. Luckily, I didn’t see anyone I knew on the way, although to be accurate, nobody I recognized. I couldn’t see straight at all, I was sweating so much, my face looked like I’d dunked it in water and my polo shirt was saturated, completely soaked through. I got as far as the corner and I turned around, retracing my steps, aiming for the safety of my room.

The reality for the next few days was as an inpatient at Poole General Hospital’s Acute Stroke Unit. Poked, prodded, investigated and examined a theory emerged as to why Paul had been so unfortunate. They discovered a reasonably sized hole in his heart which they assumed must have been the route the mini blood borne clots took on their way to his cerebral arteries. Medically stabilized and still with an impressive resting heart rate of 42 he was discharged to continue the long road to recovery and rehabilitation as an outpatient. As well as seeing a private neurological physiotherapist at home for a few sessions and gaining invaluable advice from colleagues, Paul devised his own programme of rehabilitation. Using his skills as a physiotherapist he embarked upon a daily regime of stability exercises and muscle stimulation. He learnt to control the parts of his body that weren’t working properly. Everyday tasks like eating, drinking, shaving and texting were infuriatingly time consuming if not impossible using his right hand. Sometimes it was genuinely easier to attempt things left handed – every time he shaved he felt like he was taking his life in his hands! Getting out of the bath proved ridiculously difficult, there were plenty of comedy moments until he realised he’d have to turn over and get up on all fours instead of throwing himself out sideways! He stubbornly only allowed himself to eat and drink with his right hand, a rule he had set himself from day one. Little by little, these tasks became easier, just like a magician moving a coin around his hand takes hours of practice; Paul continued to focus on good form and repetition with each skill he had to relearn. His exercises slowly bore fruit and by day 10 he was finally able to do one solitary press up and hold a half side plank on the right for 1 sec. Buoyed by the progress and feeling the tide finally beginning to turn, his thoughts returned to running.
On day 14, Paul made his first concerted effort to run. That is to say he mustered all his strength and available balance to run very disjointedly on the spot. First 30 seconds then a minute at a time then two – it scared the life out of those around him but to Paul, it felt truly amazing. Every thought, every day seemed to revolve around running, how soon could he get outside? What would he look like? How would it feel? What were the consequences on the muscles and joints going to be? His friend Greg lent him a road bike and a turbo trainer so he could incorporate some CV work into his strength training. Short sessions with low resistance soon progressed to 60 minute rides which gave Paul the feeling he’d missed so much. Still not anywhere near being able to ride outside he was content cycling at home or at the gym, racking up the miles. His first swim nearly finished him off, in typical style he dived in and tried to finish a length of the 30m Littledown pool – he made it but only just and he didn’t score highly on aesthetic merit.
Victoria School Sparkle Appeal
He ventured out for his first ‘run’ on day 16, a 0.63 mile stagger round the block which took a calf tearing 10 minutes. Poor control meant he had to take weight through the front of the right foot which strained the calf muscles to breaking point. With the leg seemingly having a mind of its own, it would swing through and kick the inside of the left calf – which after a few hundred times would start to get pretty irritating.
A days rest and back outside, the running progressed to 1.23 miles but the feelings of pain worsened, pushing through and concentrating very hard on each and every foot placement the distances gradually increased. Days went by, fatigue through over-exertion either meant sleeping all day or insomnia with nerve pain at night. A routine of gym, swim, cycle and run established itself and day by day strength eventually returned to the finer motor movements which improved his finger and toe dexterity. Paul was determined to return to full fitness in the shortest time possible. On Day 51 post stroke, he was happy to complete a rain soaked Poole Park 10km run in 44 minutes. A long way from his personal best and with the goals set ever higher (literally), he keeps running and training in preparation for his ascent of Mt Aconcagua 22,837ft on the border of Chile and Argentina. If you’d like to help him as he raises money for The Acute Stroke Unit at Poole General Hospital please email him at physiowww@gmail.com Paul has shown incredible strength through his stroke ordeal to continue with what he knows…his sport and his work. You can find him, working hard for his patients, at BWT Physiotherapy and also for himself, Physio Pal (07817478786 www.facebook. com/physio.pal) Kathy, his partner, continues to support and encourage him with her professional knowledge and expertise on combining fitness for both the mind and body: www.mindnbodyfitness.co.uk

Having served as official massage therapist for AFC Bournemouth, Amanda has experience dealing with patients as varied as top sports people to the general public, and with an outstanding knowledge of human anatomy, we’re delighted to have her offer her specialist advice in these pages. Amanda shared a common problem in tennis players in the wake of Wimbledon fever...
Why do these issues actually cause us pain? Whether you’re a sportsperson who constantly plays on your toes (especially if you put a lot of weight on your big toe!), or a stylish lady who wears impressive high-heels, the result will be the same! The muscles between the knee and the ankle joint are responsible for moving your toes, working hard every time you walk, run or wear unsuitable foot wear. This can lead to shortened muscles in between the knee and the ankle which in turn shortens the tendons leading into the toes and causes structural problems with your feet and even bunions. Our ability to grip and manipulate things with our hands and fingers by gripping or pressing downward can cause repetitive stress injury or overuse injury in the hands and forearms. Consistent rotation of the hip joint, whether in sports such as tennis, golf, cricket, football to name a few or in jobs that involve heavy lifting etc, the stabilising muscles have to work very hard to keep the body in the right posture, and these muscles work even harder when the posture is poor. Lack of strength in large stabilising muscles for example the glutes (the backside) cause lower back pain.
Amanda’s Solution • Stretch Daily: Stretching the hip flexors, the gluteal muscles and the calves is essential in this particular case study. Dan was
given specific stretches to do every day. Amanda did a lot of deep tissue release work in the PSOAS muscle which was restricting Dan’s hip rotation, as well as Quadriceps and Glutes. • Check your feet: Get your therapist to check your feet for any structural problems that could potentially be causing the calves and peroneals to consistently tighten up. These issues can be easily resolved by getting a heel raise or even some deep tissue massage to the calves which will help release the feet… • Ensure that your grip is not too tight when playing racquet sports etc, as naturally this will have an effect on the elbow and then the shoulder.
And because prevention is better than cure... • Get a remedial programme from your massage therapist, enabling you to strengthen key areas. • Stretch your hand flexors to extend the muscle and loosen it; strengthening the extensors (opposite muscles) too. • Use a foam roller, especially after intensive physical activity. • Use a golf ball under your naked foot to roll pressure across key foot muscles. You’ll be amazed by the results! • MOVE MORE! So in other words if you’re sat at a desk all day and then going for it on the tennis court for a few hours a week, ensure that you move during the day at work and that you’re stretching every day.

The Patient
The Problem
Dan Smith (age 23), has been working at Bournemouth Gardens Tennis centre for over two years. He is active both on and off the court, and is constantly kept on his toes. As coach and duty manager, Dan helps young and older tennis enthusiasts to improve their game. However his time on the court has taken its toll on Dan’s body. Dan came to see Amanda about lower back pain, tight calves and sore feet.
Dan’s initial consultation with Amanda highlighted his struggle with tight calves, a classic result of tennis players who play on their toes. His lower back pain had been caused by constant rotation of the hips due to the twisting and turning done on the court. And finally, Dan also exhibited tight forearms and elbow pain, which comes from gripping the racquet too tightly.

SUSPENSION TRAINING It’s the summer and we live in one of the best places in the country for training outdoors, we should make the most of our surroundings while the weather is good and get outside. If you’re going to train outside there is one piece of kit that’s definitely worth investing in... a suspension trainer. They allow you to use your bodyweight to load a whole variety of movements with one bit of kit (and a tree) in the same place. There are loads of brands of suspension trainers that essentially all do the same job, they range in price from £40-£200, so budget could be your major limiting factor. I’m going to use the Jungle Gym XT, it’s in the middle of the price range and my favourite in terms of functionality. When you’re actually training make sure you attach the suspension trainer to something truly solid, a thick tree branch should be fine. It’s a good idea to give it a quick test before you start swinging on it to make sure it’ll actually hold your weight. Once that’s done you’re good to go. There are loads of exercises that can train the whole body and the only major limiting factor is your imagination.

I’ll get you started with an example of a great full body session:
1 Single leg squat: Adjust the handles to chest height, hold them in both hands and lift one leg out in front of you. Sit back and down on the standing foot while taking some of your weight on the handles. Descend until your hips are below your knees and stand back up, make sure to keep your weight on your heel and your back flat. Your arms should give you just enough help to do the squat well, but don’t rely on them. Do 3 sets of 8 on each leg.
2 Body Saw: This is a tough hamstring and glute exercise; these are not used enough in most people so they need hitting directly to get them as strong as they need to be. Adjust the handles to about belly button height. Hang with straight arms and your head directly beneath the straps and body outstretched. Dig your heels into the ground and lift your hips so they’re in a straight line with your knees and shoulders. Now bend your legs and pull your body out away from the straps while keeping your hips as high as you can. You’ll know if you’re doing it right because the back of your legs will be screaming! Once your legs are bent to 90° take 3 seconds to return to straight legs, this makes sure you’re controlling the movement and will help build more strength. To make it harder just start with heels further from where the straps are hanging. Do 3 sets of 6 to 8 reps. 3 Press Up: Adjust the handles to 6 inches off the floor. Perform a press up while keeping the straps running down your arms (this makes it a little easier as it’s more stable). To make it even easier switch round and put your feet in the handles.

1,000,000KG LIFT
4 Pull Up: Set the handles so you can just reach them with your feet on the floor. Hold them with your palms facing forwards and straight arms. As you pull up you should aim to rotate your palms so that they face your shoulders at the top. That’s a great way to activate more muscles while doing the rep. Lower yourself under control and repeat. To make it easier you can lower the handles and keep your feet on the ground to give you just enough help to complete the rep. Try 3 sets of 6 to 8 reps.
We would like to invite you to come down and help us lift 1,000,000kg in the Back Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift to raise money for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. THE CONDITIONING CENTRE: SAT 17TH AUG 10AM – 3PM
5 Ring Fly: Adjust the handles to 6” off the ground and start in a press up position. Instead of bending your arms you keep them almost straight and spread the hands until you’re head is a couple of inches off the ground and your arms are straight out to the sides. Then squeeze your chest and bring the handles back to the middle, lifting your body as you go. Do 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps.
All-you-can-eat Hog Roast available from midday onwards to feed hungry lifters and spectators.
6 Face Curl: Adjust the handles to chest

height and start with your body leaning at 45° with your arms out straight in front of you and your palms facing up. Bend the arms at the elbow and bring your fists to your face, lower back to straight arms under control. Do 3 sets of 8 to 12 reps. PHOTOGRAPHY:TOM BURN PHOTOGRAPHY
7 Mountain Climber: This is a great core exercise. Adjust the handles to 12” off the ground and put your feet in them and set up in a press up position. Lift your hips as you bring your knees to your chest. Return to straight but make sure not to let your hips drop lower than your starting position. This will keep the work in your core and not stress your back. That’s a great full body session that covers all the major bases; you should be done in 45 minutes and ready to get on with the rest of the day.

LONDON WHITES
EST
2010
Most of the lads are avid Spurs fans, hence the name, London Whites. Well, they call themselves fans, but you can count on one hand the amount of matches attended! We’ve just had our most successful season to date, where we won Division 4 and came runners up in the Summer Cup Competition; therefore we felt we had something to shout about…we’ve gone big time!
The Clown – who keeps team spirits high?
Biggest Bottle Job – who always ducks out of a tackle?
Got to be Marley…he fancies himself on the football pitch, where many others don’t! To Be fair, the lads scored some great goals in his time, good tekkers and a wand of a left foot! Has more ‘off’ days then ‘on’ days though. He’s always tweeting about this goal, or reminding us about that goal, he lives and breathes it.
After breaking a leg at an early age, Marley can be seen to pick and choose his tackles, depending on the size of his opponent.
MANAGER: ADAM WILLIAMS
To be fair, this one goes right down to the wire! Marley has glimpses of skill (we put it down to luck). But Griff, being the ex pro (Pompey) that he is, has a decent step over, but then his hamstring goes!
Best Tekkers – who has the skills to pay the bills?
The Cheat – who loves a dive? Got to be Swine! AKA, Dowie (Ian Dowie). For a hard lad, he doesn’t half go down easily! Saying that, I’ve seen the wind change direction and Marley ending up on the deck screaming blue murder to the ref! Mr Vain – who absolutely rates themselves? An easy one! Got to be Grunny. The guy thinks he’s Peter Pan! We love him really. He’s known to a few of the lads as the ‘Mark Wright of Christchurch’. I’m sure he models himself on the Essex playboy himself. (Hence new hairstyle!)
Biggest liability on and off the pitch? Got to be Al Butcher, the baby of the team… prone to missing a sitter on the pitch and off it, he loves a beer and a night out. Great guy though! Worst Dress Sense – who needs to update their threads? To be fair, image is quite important to the lads, so most the time they are looking dapper! I can’t fault their clobber, although I’ll never forget the time (back in the day), Marley brought a crinkled shirt home, thinking it was fashionable and without him knowing, his mum ironed it... gutted! Social spot – where is your designated club house on a Saturday Night? We aren’t as young as we used to be, so these days we tend to stay local. Gone are the days (bar Grunny) where we can be found in the Camel Bar at 6am. Our favoured watering hole(s) are in Christchurch. We enjoy the Boathouse, Captains Club and Soho. Those who are brave or stupid enough can be found dancing the night away in Dukes! Who’s the longest in the shower? (Cough, cough)... “Me”.

HAVE A GO
MISSION NO. 10
We’ve recruited local nightclub owner, JOSH SIMONS to work through our list of challenges trying out some of the area’s best activities and to be our ‘Have a go hero’. Having successfully lost some unwanted weight on the last challenge with My Food, we were so impressed with Josh’s willpower and dedication, we decided to reward him this month with a sport he knows and loves well… golf! With the perfect conditions in the heat wave, we sent Josh down to Playgolf Bournemouth at Iford on a beautiful summer’s afternoon to show us his skills. Hi Josh, how are you doing after your amazing success on the My Food plan? Great. I have continued to watch my diet closely and am now just under my target weight of 12stone. Lightest I’ve been for 10 years. Highly recommended. Being a sport close to your heart, I imagine this is one of the preferred challenges you’ve had so far?! Yes indeed. I left school at 16 and played full time golf for 5 years with the goal of turning
professional. I played for Great Britain at under 18 level, but never ended up pursuing the professional game. I still love playing golf, although not competitively these days. How do you think you will fare on the fairway today? Well I only play once a month or so. I’m not expecting to burn it up. Plus I’ve forgotten my golf shoes so will be pirouetting in my Gucci loafers. Not ideal. AFTER… You looked like you were enjoying yourself, still got a round or 2 in your locker then? I think so. I was a few under par for the 9 holes we played. It’s a nice little track at Iford. I don’t think Tiger and Rory are quaking in their boots mind. Did you manage to keep out of the bunkers and away from the rough?! I did on the whole. I got on a bit of a roll with 2 birdies in a row and a 6 footer for a birdie on the next. I was about to go in to Tiger charge mode but bottled it.
How would you describe the set up here at Iford? It’s a fun course to play with friends. Suitable for novices, weekend golfers and the more advanced player. If you’re of a decent level you can go low around Iford. Nothing more fun on a course than playing better than your handicap! Would you recommend the course to people wanting to give it a go? 100%. At worst it’s a nice walk with friends. There’s a lovely bar and restaurant here too so great for a sociable afternoon. Not the most adrenaline filled challenge we have set you but out of 10? I’d give it a 10 purely because I put myself under pressure and expect to play as good as I did 10 years ago every time I go out. I continue to be a frustrated tour pro. That will never change. Well done, Josh for another good challenge. We’ve got something a bit different planned for September so look out for next month’s issue to find out how Josh gets on!

Fifty-two year old Andy Foot was in pretty poor shape. As a bus driver he spent most of the day sitting down and this combined with a poor diet meant that Andy’s weight had crept up to 25 stone. He had tried the gym, but without guidance and support had quickly become disillusioned. Knowing he had to take action to improve his health, Andy had just started cycling to work last October when he suffered a heart attack. The cause of the attack was a clogged artery caused by high cholesterol and after the insertion of a stent; Andy was off work for four and half months to recuperate. During this time he attended a cardiac rehab programme at the hospital, which included a light workout once a week. Determined not to fall back into bad habits, Andy joined the Village Urban Resort in Bournemouth in February, and encouraged by staff he bought a MYZONE® Physical Activity Belt. It proved to be a huge turning point. “The heart attack was a real wake-up call for me and I knew I had to change my ways. But it wasn’t until I started using MYZONE® that I really got into exercise. Seeing how many calories I burn during a workout really works for me. The MYZONE® website does all the maths for you to make it easy. At first I was managing 400-500 calories per session, which I was very pleased with, but now that I’m fitter, I aim to burn 1,000 calories in a 45-60 minute session. According to MYZONE®, I’ve burned just under 20,000 calories so far,” says Andy.
As part of his recovery, it’s important that Andy exercises within the correct heart rate parameters – enough to challenge his heart, but not to overexert it. With the support of his GP and the staff at the gym, Andy now works out on average four times a week. “Using MYZONE® I can keep my heart working in the required zone safe in the knowledge that I am exercising correctly. Without it I wouldn’t have the confidence to push myself to the acceptable limits. The statistics allow me to show my GP exactly what I am doing. It’s a great way of monitoring my progress and my GP is really pleased with the results,” he says. Exercising for just two months, Andy has already lost six inches from his waist and has bags more energy. “I’m a completely different person now. MYZONE® has given me the kick I needed. Being able to see how hard I am working is really inspiring. I’m never going to be an athlete, but with MYZONE® I am improving all the time. I feel great,” says Andy. “Six members of my family now belong to the gym and I am trying to get the others in on the MYZONE® act to encourage a little family rivalry.” MYZONE is now available at Velocity; ask one of the team for more details or call 01202 416111 to arrange an appointment to discuss your fitness goals.

And inevitably, it was Ronaldo who opened the scoring. He stood over the ball 30 yards out; back straight, arms by his side and a puff of the cheeks. It was a sight so familiar to millions around the world and the end result was just as predictable. He sent the ball swerving and dipping over the wall and then into the back of the net. It was as well received as any goal scored by visiting player at the Goldsands Stadium, as all four sides of the ground applauded the former Manchester United winger’s spectacular strike. There was some promising play from Howe’s side and Brett Pitman guided a lob wide of the post early on. Mohamed Coulilaly proved to be full of energy on his debut, but it was another winger who was running the game. Ronaldo got hold of a loose pass in the final third and rounded Darryl Flahavan before tapping the ball into the net in the 40th minute before Sami Khedira added a third minutes later.
There were will be constant reminders this season of how far AFC Bournemouth has come over the last four years. Fixtures at Elland Road and Loftus Road are penciled into the Cherries’ Championship schedule, while the FA Cup holders visit the south coast in just a few weeks’ time. But few matches will provide such a sharp contrast to the on field struggles and off field financial problems that left many supporters fearing for the future of their club as the visit of Real Madrid. The tale of how Eddie Mitchell and Eddie Howe transformed a club on its knees to one of the most progressive in the Football League is well worn. It was difficult, however, not to cast thoughts back to games at Accrington, Hereford and Blyth Spartans as the Cherries walked out alongside the nine time European Cup winners at the Goldsands Stadium. It truly was the perfect evening to celebrate the progress made under Howe and the atmosphere was as good as any promotion party or great escape finale.

Real Madrid may have been less than week into their pre-season schedule, but it was soon obvious that they weren’t far from their fluent best and that Cristiano Ronaldo would be the focal point of every attack. There were only a couple of minutes on the clock when he sent an audacious back heel just wide. It was the kind of effort few players would think of and even fewer would attempt.
Carlo Ancelotti made ten changes half way through his first game in charge, with Kaka and Gonzalo Higuain amongst the substitutions, and it was the latter who made it four. Angel di Maria then extended the lead to five in the 68th minute, before young Brazilian midfielder Casemiro lifted the ball over Flahavan to further Real’s lead. Both Ancellotti and Howe addressed the media in their post-match press conference with the Madrid manager praising the Cherries’ endeavour and wishing them well for the coming season. Howe, in his usual graceful manner, paid tribute to maestros of Madrid but his overall message was clear. His side had lost, and were understandably disappointed, but the game was about more than this. “I’m sure there would have been people around the stadium, especially those fans who had really endured the really tough days here, and this was a special day for them”, he told the waiting press. More special days are ahead, as the Cherries kick off life in the second tier of English football for only the second time in 114 years this month. The history books are open, and the club is constantly re-writing the pages – Madrid is only the start.
