DARCY WARD – WHEN THE POOLE STAR WAS SIDE-LINED AT THE BEGINNING OF MAY IT WAS A MAJOR BLOW TO THE PIRATES EARLY SEASON HOPES.
Matt Ford is used to seeing his Poole Pirates team going round in circles; that’s what speedway is all about. But this year, after 13 years at the helm of his four time Elite Championship side, he could be forgiven for thinking that he’s started to do the same! The club has been beset by injuries and bad luck in the first half of the 2013 season and Ford has been working full time behind the scenes in an effort to turn their fortunes around. “It seems like as soon as we fix one problem another one comes around immediately behind and we are just getting thwarted at every turn,” says a frustrated Ford. “We lost a key rider in our first weekend of racing and it has set the tone whereby we have been dealt misfortune and woe on an almost weekly basis!” The Pirates have been fighting back though, and they are still serving up their loyal fans with plenty of thrills on track, as they have gone on to feature in some close calls and even a couple of rare defeats at Wimborne Road during the opening months of the current campaign. “We lost our number one Darcy Ward soon into the season whilst we were already reeling from that first week injury to Robert Miskowiak. With Darcy set to be missing for
around two months, I had to act fast and actually re-declared the entire team to accommodate new riders. It was amongst the very toughest times in the whole of my tenure as owner of the Pirates.” To literally add insult to those injuries, the riders that Ford drafted in immediately became injured themselves in track crashes elsewhere before even turning a wheel for the Pirates! Add to that some dramatic problems on track that cost Pirates dear when vital points were lost to misfortune, such as untimely crashes and engine problems, and you could say that their fortunes were spiralling out of control. This month, however, Ford is sure that the Pirates will turn the corner. He knows that his class of 2013 can overcome and that some inevitable victories will be all the sweeter when pulled off in spite of adversity. He is looking forward to the remainder of the season with confidence. “There is no doubt in my mind that we have some of the World’s best riders currently wearing the skull and crossbones. I am confident that we are ready to show our true metal and that, with just a little luck on our side for a change, we can be a match for anyone. After all, in the midst of all this, we still travelled to King’s Lynn in May and took a convincing win from a team at the top of the league table.”
STICKING WITH STACHYRA
Pirates 2013 recruit Dawid Stachyra was very nearly one of the riders that Matt Ford was forced to release when he was re-building his team earlier this year. However, the super-keen, Polish, mid-order man was given a dramatic reprieve when plans to sign a Latvian hopeful floundered and, much to the delight of the Pirates fans who had taken to Stachyra’s 100% style, he remains at Wimborne Road.

Dawid has certainly not disappointed so far and was the first of the class of 2013 to score maximum points when he bagged a full house at home to Eastbourne in May. It was no fault of Dawid’s that he came close to departure as mathematics and rider averages play a major role in team building in Speedway and the numbers have to add up.

Floyd will recommend this as one of the great dishes of Jamaica, along with jerk chicken. No matter which meat you use, the longsimmered stew makes great use of tough cuts of meat, or those with bones in them. Definitely use goat if you can find it – look in ethnic markets, especially a halal market if your town has one – but the dish works fine with lamb, too. Substitute beef if you’d rather. Is this stew spicy? You bet, but it’s not so fiery as you might think.
Goat curry Ingredients
Method
1/4 cup vegetable oil 6-8 Tbsp curry powder 1 Tbsp allspice (see step 1) 3 pounds goat (can use lamb or beef if you can’t find goat) Salt 2 onions, chopped 1 Scotch bonnet peppers, seeded and chopped A 2-inch piece of ginger, peeled and minced 1 head of garlic, peeled and chopped 1-2 cans coconut milk 1 15-ounce can of tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes 1 Tbsp dried thyme 3-4 cups water 5 Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 inch chunks
1 Make the curry powder. If you can find Jamaican curry powder, definitely use it. If not, use regular curry powder and add the allspice to it. You will need at least 6 tablespoons of spices for this stew, and you can kick it up to 8-9 depending on how spicy you like it. 2 Cut the meat into large chunks, maybe 2-3 inches across. If you have bones, you can use them, too. Salt everything well and set aside to come to room temperature for about 30 minutes. 3 Heat the oil in a large pot over mediumhigh heat. Mix in 2 tablespoons of the curry powder and heat until fragrant. 4 Pat the meat dry and brown well in the curried oil. Do this in batches and don’t overcrowd the pot. It will take a while to do this, maybe 30 minutes or so. Set the browned meat aside in a bowl. (When all the meat is browned, if you have bones, add them and brown them, too.)
5 Add the onions and scotch bonnet to the pot and sauté, stirring from time to time, until the onions just start to brown, about 5 minutes. Sprinkle some salt over them as they cook. Add the ginger and garlic, mix well and sauté for another 1-2 minutes. 6 Put the meat (and bones, if using) back into the pot, along with any juices left in the bowl. Mix well. Pour in the coconut milk and tomatoes and 5 tablespoons of the curry powder. Stir to combine. If you are using 2 cans of coconut milk, add 3 cups of water. If you’re only using 1 can, add 4 cups of water. Add the thyme. Bring to a simmer and let it cook until the meat is falling-apart tender, which will take at least 2 hours. Longer if you have a mature goat. 7 Once the meat is close to being done – tender but not falling apart yet – Add the potatoes and mix in. The stew is done when the potatoes are. Taste for salt and add some if it needs it. 8 Serve with Jamaican rice and peas.

SPORT
FLIXX
WE’VE PICKED TWO SPORTS RELATED FILMS FOR OUR LOCAL FILM EXPERT TO VIEW AND CRITIQUE. DAN HAS WORKED AS A VISUAL EFFECTS ARTIST ON BLOCKBUSTERS INCLUDING STAR WARS AND THE DARK KNIGHT AND WE’VE SET HIM UP WITH ANOTHER COUPLE OF GREAT FILMS TO REVIEW WITH A BEER AND POPCORN.
Happy Gilmore When you are an untalented but persistent Ice Hockey player who keeps failing to get into a pro team, and your grandmother is about to lose her house if she can’t pay $270,000 to the IRS, Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) decides to swaps his hockey stick and puck for a golf club to help. In a last ditch attempt to win tournaments and collect as much prize money to help save his grandmothers doomed fate Happy Gilmore finds he has talent that could save the day.
Senna A documentary about the Brazilian F1 driver, Ayrton Senna 1960-1994, who won the Formula One championship three times before his untimely death at the top of his game at the age of 34 in 1994. This quite frankly amazing documentary is made up from extensive, and in many cases, never seen before archive footage. The well crafted documentary follows Senna’s rise to fame and excellence on the track as well as the torment, endurance and sacrifices that go on behind the scenes in both his personal and professional life. But the one thing about this that stands out from the crowd of other sport documentaries is that there are no head shot interviews. It seamlessly weaves between archive footage with voice over contributions to tie the story together. This keeps the pace up. The central force of this film is really the rivalry between Senna and Alan Prost, another legend in F1 and a bitter enemy is the eyes of Senna. They would literally force each other off the road in a battle for supremacy.
What we thought… A well crafted documentary with plenty of pace. Even if you are not bang into F1 this biopic goes much deeper than just the sport, but also exposes the darker side to human nature and the unrelenting desire to push the body to extreme levels of endurance to take the number 1 spot.

After discovering his skills with a golf club after attacking removal men trying to take furniture from his grandmother’s house, Gilmore’s ‘in your face’ Ice Hockey style shines on the golf course and quickly puts him in the spotlight as he builds up a mass of fans. With a new mentor named Chubbs (Carl Weathers) they have 90 days to raise the ranks and win the cash before his grandmother’s eviction. As Gilmore progresses, the top spot held by Shooter Gavin (Christopher McDonald) is under threat and Shooter will do anything to hold onto his rein and see Gilmore fail. I wonder how this will all end. Well, you will just have to watch it because I’m not going to tell you.
What we thought… A reasonably entertaining goofball of a film that has set Adam Sandler into a niche of predictability in his film career. If you are a fan of his later work such like the Waterboy, Little Nicky and Mr. Deeds, you won’t be disappointed.
Despite what the weather is doing right now, it looks like we are in full swing summer! Whether you have been training for a holiday, because your girlfriend says you are too fat or because you need to find a girlfriend… I have put together another 3 tracks this month to keep you motivated to keep up the hard work! Here we go…
All Shook Up Chris Malinchak After the huge success of his single - So Good to Me; Malinchak is back with a deep house banger. Sampling a classic ‘Rick James’ jam, this track has all the elements to get you moving in the gym. Dark, punchy and uptempo. Download, now.
TUNEAGE DJ Charles Music to train to
Voices (Feat Sasha Keable) Disclosure The two brothers from Reigate have taken the ‘scene’ by storm this year. With their debut no. 1 album dropping this month, I felt it was fitting for me to select my favourite track from the album which I have had on repeat (and boy it was hard.) I went with ‘Voices.’ An infectious vocal, sticking to the signature garage vibe. A nostalgic track that builds and drops very nicely with a few surprises. Check out the whole album ‘Settle.’
Bring me Down Zak Toms Here is an old school garage track I stumbled upon whilst my iTunes was on shuffle the other day. Totally forgot about it, but bringing it back in all my sets right now. Despite being over 10 years old, this track would chart top 10 now if it was released again. Deep bassline groover with a pumping garage beat. REEWINND! Until next time! DJ Charles x 13

SHARING THE RIGHT TO ROLL
SPORT TALK S
at here on one of those wet, windy, spring days, where it’s too miserable to go out, I think about the past and future of my sport, where did it come from? Where will it be in the next 20 years? Some just say it was a fad, but to me, I used longboarding as an excuse to escape from the pressures and emotions of what went on at home. I’ve been longboarding/skateboarding for about 12 years (that’s as far as I can remember), I can remember being out with some of the other kids in the Cul-de-sac for days on the end, trying to learn that Ollie that Kickflip. My dad was an alcoholic with a raging temper after consuming ridiculous amounts of whiskey and Stella. He went into rehab twice but both times saw him collapse and go back to the drink. For me, my longboard was a way of escaping all of this at home; it gave me a sense of freedom. Back in 2007, my dad passed away after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, so in 2012, I planned a trip to longboard 180 (ish) miles to Paris from Le Havre with a good friend of mine Andy, to celebrate my late father’s life and to raise money for his headstone. I still use longboarding as a source of expression and freedom from the real world. It helps me to get away and forget everything that is going on around me. Back to the past At some point in the 1950’s, skateboarding was born in California. No one knows the exact year, or who was the first to do it, although many claim credit. All we know for sure is that skateboarding has its roots in the culture of surfing. The popularity of skateboarding grew rapidly as many non-surfers began to skate. Skateboarding grew away from street and pool riding to downhill, slalom and freestyle (choreographed skateboarding to music). Skateboarding took a huge decline after skate parks weren’t built to the correct criteria, and a lot of people just saw it as a fad. Skateboarding was then pronounced dead. In 1972, Frank Nasworthy invented the urethane skateboard wheel. Until this point, skaters used clay, or even metal wheels. These wheels sparked new interest in skateboarding and it started to increase popularity.
Back in the late 60’s and 70’s Poole and Bournemouth were thriving surf and skate towns with a very popular and large surf community down at the pier. It had mainly been created by the likes of Wessex Surf club, who would skateboard on those flat calm days down on the South coast to get their fix. The only shop to buy parts for their boards was an old hardware store where they would get their bearings and screws called ‘the skate shop’ in Poole which has been there as long as I an remember supplying the local kids their skates, skateboards and shoes. Now where are we? Today, skateboarding is still growing, and Longboarding has been growing increasingly fast in the UK over the last 10 years. Specific longboard shops have been opening around the UK and we have two fantastic shops here in Poole and Bournemouth. An organisation started called the IGSA, the Governing body of international gravity sports association. These are the people that organise national events, memberships and insurance for all riders. Vortex Skate-Wake-Ski opened back in 2007 by Paddy, he runs an excellent shop with all the latest longboarding products that you could need, he also offers excellent boards for the complete beginner to the absolute pro. You’ll find Vortex in the old highstreet of Poole town selling pads, helmet, nuts and bolts along with other tools of the trade. Find out more www.facebook.com/VORTEX.KITE.WAKE.N.SKI
Carve Boardsports is the other longboard shop in the area based in Boscombe run by Mark ‘carve’ Evans, selling all the latest longboarding products. Find out more www.facebook.com carveboardsportsbournemouth
Thursday night Vortex Skate Sessions We have established the ‘Thursday night skate night’ where you can meet us down at Branksome Dene chine car park and get your shred on! We aim to attract new people, kids and adults alike to come and have a go, learn to stand on a board for the first time or to learn to slide, carve or just meet new people. Vortex and Carve riders will likely be there any weather, so come pick their brains for technique and some tips. Don’t worry if you don’t have a board as the shop will bring some demo boards and wheels for you to try out for your ride but we highly recommend you bring a helmet. Every week we try and have competitions that vary, slalom, biggest standy, best bail, fastest speed, we measure that with our new gadget, the speed trap. To end the evening we will get the BBQ burning and all we ask is for you to bring some meat, maybe a few buns and we’ll do the cooking. As night falls you may need a head torch but we try to lighten it up as best we can with glow sticks and torches... safety first! So don’t be shy, come on down and meet us and have a skate. We’re usually there from half 5/6pm till about 9.30pm and shred some thane with us. Keep an eye out on details on our Facebook page or find our posters up around town in pubs, cafes and Universities.
Thanks for your time and reading… Oh look, WE HAVE AN INCREDIBLE TOWN it’s stopped raining, time to skate. HERE BY THE SEA AND IT WOULD BE SILLY NOT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS THAT LINE THE COAST HERE AND NOT TO MAKE GOOD USE OF IT

FIT TIPS
This month we’re talking to Melissa Rayner, local fitness trainer and nutritionist about how you can combine training with supplements to improve your health and fitness levels. Mel is an expert in weight loss and fitness increase campaigns and possesses the BSY Diploma in personal training, priding herself in helping over 250 men and women beat the bulge and succeed in their fitness goals. On top of this, Mel has a concept that is easily maintainable for one and all. She doesn’t claim to have a magic potion but simply successful training methods, nutritional advice and motivation to help you not only achieve but smash your goals, by ‘unlocking’ a passion and desire to train to each individuals full potential. Complimented by great diet and nutrition that is both sociable and maintainable, no wonder so many men and women are tapping into Mel’s classes in Dorset and Hampshire. Mel is a wife and mother to a 1 year old and a 5 year old. She balances family time and work time although Mel does admit that going to work is a breeze in comparison to parenting! In her free time she likes to take part in extreme races such as Survival of the fittest, Fan Dance, Grim Challenge and Tough Mudder. “I love the feeling of taking part in something that is far, far bigger than I am. The nervous anticipation, the training, the diet all comes down to one event and I fully intend to push my body and mind to the limits. My biggest challenge this year will be Bournemouth’s first full marathon. I’m doing some light training at the moment until my extreme races are over and then will concentrate on getting some longer runs under my belt”. Mel runs a number of classes for various abilities. From Aerobics to Boxercise, Boot camp to Pilates and more recently, Mel has been training elite clients that want to take their bodies above and beyond. This innovative workout will be available in Dorset and Hampshire at various venues and online. Designed for small groups of elite men and women that want to get more from sessions than current classes offer. If you can do weighted tuck jumps, Hindu press ups, dragon flags and more then this is the class for you. Mel has teamed up with Voltz to provide her clients with high quality natural health supplements to compliment her training and nutritional plans. Mel’s approach to fitness and well being matched the ethos of Voltz and their mission to help people be healthy, active and fit. Everyone agrees that it takes a balanced approach to achieve this and not one thing. Fitness training alone is not enough nor is taking lots of supplements.

TAKING THE RIGHT SUPPLEMENTS Your body’s daily functions depend on many chemical reactions that, in turn, depend on vitamins and minerals. Your fat burning capability, for instance, relies on you getting the optimal amounts of certain micronutrients. For example, to make insulin you need zinc and vitamin B6. To turn glucose into energy, rather than fat, you need B vitamins, magnesium and vitamin C and to burn fat you need all of these, plus the B vitamin biotin. You have probably heard the mantra ‘as long as you eat a balanced diet you get all the vitamins and minerals you need’. This is the greatest lie in nutrition today! Why? Because there’s only a slim chance your diet meets the full range of RDA’s- also it depends on your definition of ‘need’ as well as what you want from life. A better way to examine this is by using Optimum daily amounts rather than the RDA’s see the chart below: RDA
ODA
Vitamin C
85 mg
250 - 3,000 mg
Vitamin E
15 IU
50 - 800 IU
(recommended daily allowance)
(optimum daily allowance)
Magnesium 350 mg
400 - 600 mg
Vitamin B12 3 mcg
10 - 100 mcg
PEAK ENERGY
That’s where supplements come in. They make up the difference between how you feel now and how you could feel if you were optimally nourished, losing weight steadily and feeling fantastic until you are at your peak condition. The brain, muscles, liver, skin, immune system, heart and arteries are all simply a collection of cells that do different jobs for the body, be it digesting, thinking or moving. The fuel that is needed is glucose. So keeping an eye on blood sugar, your cells fuel reserve- is the first step in making energy.
The Clever Part
Within each of our 30 trillion or so cells exist tiny energy factories called mitochondria. These turn glucose into a another chemical pyruvic acid, a process that releases a small amount of energy, which the cell can use to carry out its work. If there isn’t enough oxygen around while this is happening it creates a by product called lactic acid, the particularly uncomfortable sensation we get when training intensively. Sometimes referred to as ‘dead legs’. That’s why muscles ache if you are sedentary and then do strenuous exercise. I could talk about this process in more detail but if you want your body to perform at its peak, Supplements provide a very important part of your health and fitness program.
Raspberry Ketones
A great supplement to aide and assist weight loss is the Voltz Raspberry Ketones. Raspberry ketones regulate the hormone adiponectin, which tends to be present at lower levels in people with obesity than those without it. Some studies show that increasing adiponectin levels may help treat insulin issues such as type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome by increasing insulin sensitivity. Insulin resistance is a key factor in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Raspberry ketones may also regulate norepinephrine, which can cause a rise in body

Meet the Pro Jamie Morrison
POLO PASSION England polo captain, Jamie Morrison, talks exclusively to us about how he started playing the prestigious game, the fitness demanded, and his thoughts on the forthcoming British Beach Polo Championships at Sandbanks on 12th/13th July.
Hi Jamie, thanks for talking to us, can you tell us a bit about your history and how you started playing Polo? I basically started playing polo because I grew up with it. My father was an East-end Essex boy and had never seen a horse until he was 30. He found the sport and I first sat on a horse when I was about 6 months old. I started riding when I was about 5 or 6 years old and he let me start playing when I was strong enough at the age of 12 and I never looked back. Your father, the late Bryan Morrison, was responsible for bringing arena Polo to Britain, can you tell us how that came about given his background with his successful career in the music business? Funnily enough, he was in Chicago on business for music stuff. He checked into his hotel and went to his room about 7-8 storeys up, opened the curtains and saw a big neon sign in the street below saying ‘Polo’ with an arrow. He thought it was kind of strange in the middle of winter in Chicago and wondered what it was. He walked downstairs, looked at the sign, walked a block saw another sign, walked another couple of blocks, got to a building with ‘Polo Today’ written on the front and
20
thought, what the hell is this?! He knocked on the door and a guy opened it. Dad said he was from England and played Polo, had seen these signs and wondered what was going on. The guy explained that they brought the horses in at the beginning of the winter, trained them in the arena, stayed and played all season and it was hugely popular with over 2000 people watching the games of arena Polo. It was the first arena game that Dad saw and he thought: why can’t we do that in England? So, as soon as he came back, he built an arena. It was the first of its kind in the country and it started the winter association. How has this changed the opportunities to play all year round in this country? Before, in the winter, you would pack up in September and then you didn’t do anything until the following May. If you weren’t lucky enough to go off travelling to sunnier climes and be able to play that way, you would have to sit at home twiddling your thumbs and have 6 or 7 months of not being able to do anything at all. So, it means that the people in England could stay here and make a living. Businessmen who were unable to go off to Argentina for a month or two could stay here and could still work and play. It was a great thing.
“TO PLAY AT THESE AMAZING VENUES LIKE SANDBANKS AND TO REPRESENT YOUR COUNTRY... THERE’S NOTHING BETTER.”
What does it feel like to represent England and be captain of the team? It’s a huge honour. I was the captain of the Arena Polo Team at the O2 and to be the Captain of the Beach Polo Team as well is really an honour.
for charity and raise money when they’re playing their Polo and they take it seriously but have a great time. They’re good players. When they’re out there they’re like normal competitors and don’t want any special treatment or anything like that.
Can you tell us about your favourite pony? I have a pony called ‘Q’, like the James Bond character. I got him a couple of years ago; he’s just got that thoroughbred quality and is extremely powerful and very consistent. He gives you his best every time he goes out. He’s probably my best horse.
Polo isn’t just a field sport and can be played on different terrains from beach to snow, what is your favourite type? I think the good old classic on the grass would be my favourite. But, I really am a huge fan of the beach Polo, arena and snow. I’ve done all three in the last few months. I’ve been in Miami playing beach polo. I played on a frozen lake a few months back and was practising a lot for the arena Polo games. I’ve done all four in a short space of time and love all of them in different ways. The grass is still the old favourite, there is nothing like it, but I do love these events like Sandbanks. It brings new people into the sport and they see it in a different light.
Growing up with a strong musical background, did this have an influence on your taste of music and what do you like to listen to right now? I literally listen to everything and I’m involved a bit in the music business still which is something that I’ve done for a few years now following on from Dad. It depends. If its summer on a sunny day, I like a bit of reggae. I keep in touch with the charts. I like rock and roll, house music, dance music. I keep an open mind with my music work but it does depend on what sort of mood I’m in. I like everything from classical to house, to hip hop to reggae, all of it. I’m just a big music fan and lover of all music really. Your family founded the Royal Berkshire Polo Club, where their Royal Highnesses Princes Charles, William and Harry have all played. Do you have the opportunity to play with the Royals often? I’ve played against them once or twice. They obviously love the sport as much as any of us do. Once you’ve played the sport, it’s a feeling you can’t really describe; you get hooked. They do a lot of good stuff
The British Beach Polo Championship is coming up this month at Sandbanks, do you enjoy this event and what do you think of the surrounding area? I think it’s a beautiful, fantastic, amazing and gorgeous part of the country, I love going down there, and I’ve done it for a few years now. Johnny Wheeler and the guys that organise it down there do a fantastic job. It’s a real different crowd to what you usually get at the Audi international or Gold Cup and those kinds of events. You go down there and everyone wants to have a good time and hopefully the sun will be shining and as I said before, it makes new fans. People see it in a different light maybe not how they pictured it; it can only be a good thing. It’s a great event.
21
POLO PASSION How do you think your team will fair this year? I think we’ve got a good chance. We had won it the three previous years and then last year with the handicapping system, we were a bit out played in the sand. When the weather is bad and you’ve got handicap goals against you, it can be very tough but I think we’ve got a good chance. The guys I’m playing with have got plenty of experience now on sand so we will go out there and give it our all. What level of fitness does Polo require? At the top end, it requires a lot of fitness. Riding fitness is very different to a lot of other fitness. You could take a personal trainer who is very aerobically fit and put him on a horse for an hour and he probably wouldn’t be able to walk for two days after. It’s a different kind of muscle group. You need a lot of muscle fitness in terms of the riding but it also helps to be aerobically fit and have strong core strength, you need a lot of that. Have you had any nasty injuries? Yes, I’ve had quite a few. I broke both my knee caps in one go. I’ve had countless stitches. I broke my eye socket. I smashed my hand up and all sorts, the list goes on! But, it doesn’t take away the love of the sport. It’s the most fantastic, adrenalin fuelled and amazing sport. It’s the bumps and breaks that make it fun!
22
What is the best way to unwind after a game? If it’s a tough game, you want to have a good soak in the bath and sort your body out. At Sandbanks you go straight into a crazy party so it’s probably not the best way to unwind but usually, you just go back and make sure the horses are alright and then just relax. Tell us about what you see yourself doing after your playing? I think I’ll play until I’m on my death bed if I can! I obviously enjoy music and I do some music publishing; we have a label too so I enjoy doing that. Then there’s the Berkshire Polo Club, we want to develop that into a fantastic world class venue so it can be a great business going forward. Finally, can you tell our readers the top three things they need to know about Polo? 1) It is the oldest team sport in the world. 2) A full size polo field is 9 football fields. 3) Each player who comes to a game has a minimum of four horses per game per player and when you get to the top level in Argentina, they each bring 10 to 14 horses per player to the game.

FOCUS NAME Lottie Harbottle SPORT Wakeboarding Lottie Harbottle is an up and coming wakeboarder. She has just turned 14, rides for the GB Team and has already been placed 3rd in the World. Lottie has been riding for four years and competing for two. She is sponsored by Jobe Watersports and Monster Energy. She loves all sports but wakeboarding has become her favourite one to focus on for the future.
What got you into wakeboarding? We have a boat out in Italy and go there on holiday every year. My dad thought it would be funny if we got something that we would all fail at so he bought a wakeboard! When we got back to the UK my friend had a birthday party at WakeMK, it just escalated from there really. Tell us about any competitions or wins you’ve had? My best result so far would definitely have to be the 2012 world championships that took place in the Philippines where I came 3rd. I am now ranked 2nd in the world and 1st in the UK. I have a love hate relationship with competitions because I get really nervous but I really like seeing everyone ride and the atmosphere. How do you balance studying with your training? I go to a boarding school at the moment so I don’t get to ride as much as I want. I get all my homework done at school so that when I ride I don’t have to worry about any excess work. If I had it my way I would swap school for wakeboarding any day! …and tell us about your training regime… I train with my coach at WakeMK every week and try and keep it as concentrated as possible. This generally means a lot of swimming and crashing! At school I do as much sport as I can, this involves games lessons every day and I go for a run every other day. What’s your favourite trick? My favourite trick is probably a front roll. I like it because you can go huge on them, they look cool and you feel weightless in the air.
26
What has been the highlight of your sport so far? I think that my trip to the Philippines is my biggest highlight so far. It was an incredible experience to go to another country and especially one that perhaps isn’t as fortunate as the likes of the UK. Do you take part in any other sports? I do lots of sports at school like tennis, athletics, netball, hockey, basketball, squash and swimming. I absolutely love sports so try to do as much as I can at school and at home! The Newforest Water Park now has its cable park open do you think you’ll be paying a visit? I will definitely be paying a visit at some point. My family live near there so will definitely go there next time I go for a visit. It’s great when new cables open and I think, as a wakeboarder, it’s my duty to help support as many cables as I can in order to help the sport grow. What would you say to young people wanting to give wakeboarding a go? Do it! It’s so fun and it’s such a laugh! Everyone falls and everyone succeeds and generally speaking everyone progresses at the same rate so you advance together. Find your local cable or boat and do it!! What are your hopes and aims for the future? I want to be European and National champion this year and eventually become one of the best female riders in the world. I want to get more people into the sport and coach people. I hope that the sport continues to progress and eventually gets in the Olympics. Thank you for talking to us, Lottie and we wish you great success with your future.
The Game talks to Jo Gaskill, local kitesurfer and fitness expert about the surf scene on the south coast. Name Sport Sponsors
Jo Gaskill Kitesurfing H2O team rider and previously North Kites
Fit2you.com
J
o grew up in Yorkshire and Cheshire, studied environmental microbiology at Aberdeen University with a year in Michigan. After an expedition to Patagonia, she began working for Raleigh International planning projects in Namibia and Ghana. Jo spent eight years working in the charity sector in London before retraining as a personal trainer and sports massage therapist. She relocated to Poole six years ago and set up Fit2you delivering home and workplace personal training to groups as well as individuals. Since moving back, she has had some fulfilling contracts - exercise rehabilitation instructor with the Poole Royal Marines and developing fitness programmes for the RNLI lifeguards. Jo now offers mobile Pilates, PT and massage and also treats at Lilliput Health Chiropractic Clinic. Thanks for talking to us, Jo... what got you into kitesurfing and when did you start? Living in London, I spent every weekend trying to get away, surfing, mountain biking, anything outdoors. One weekend in 2006, we came to Poole for a two day kitesurfing course with Easyriders and were hooked! Back in London, I bit the bullet and quit my job. I secured a sixmonth contract at the RNLI that enabled me to relocate to Poole and I started working with Easyriders, teaching kids how to fly land kites, while learning how to kitesurf myself and eventually trained as a BKSA instructor.
28
What is it about kitesurfing that makes it your chosen sport? I’ve always loved the water and as our closest good surfing waves are at Kimmeridge, it seemed the natural thing to take up a wind sport. There is a massive sense of freedom that comes with kiting, you kite with friends, but there’s so much space (beachside) to throw yourself around. It’s also pretty diverse - wave-riding, jumping, tricks. People are coming up with new stuff all the time. Have you taken part in any competitions and is there anything you are training for now? In the past, I’ve competed in various endurance events, marathons, surf lifesaving nationals etc. and while I’m naturally competitive, I haven’t gotten into any with kiting... never say never though (as long as there’s a veterans class!) You are also a kite instructor, how does it feel when you see someone you’ve taught succeed? Yes, I find teaching anything a huge privilege; people put their faith in your skills and ability to share your knowledge. The first couple of days learning to kite can be a bit frustrating - a lot of getting dragged and face-planting - a lot of getting a face full of water - so seeing (and hearing!) someone’s euphoria when they get up on the board for the first time gives me a huge sense of satisfaction.
How difficult is kitesurfing for someone who may have never tried it? After the first few days trying to master kite and board, as well as negotiate other traffic on the water, kiting has a really quick learning curve, so you can make good improvements fairly swiftly. What I’d recommend to anyone who wants to learn is to practise with a land kite first, as most people get stuck when they get to the stage of putting the board on and they either can’t fly the kite onehanded or can’t take their eyes of the kite without it ditching. Some experience wake-boarding to understand edging the board will also help. What’s your best or favourite trick? I’m a bit of a chicken to be honest; I’m more adventurous overseas when mistakes are a warm swim to shore! So, really, I need to broaden my repertoire - I used to trampoline so should find this stuff easy! Unhooked raleys are a fun, easy trick but I’m most enjoying my wave board right now, it’s just a thrill turning onto and catching the waves.
What’s your favourite surf report to check for the best weather? Windguru, Big Salty and xcweather are all good sites. You generally need to compare a couple of reports to figure out the likely scenario for any given day. What would you recommend for someone thinking about giving it a go? Get some lessons. There are local schools that teach introductory 1, 2 and 3 day courses. These are enough to give you a taster, but you should expect to have a little more tuition after that. The Watersports Academy and Easyriders are excellent schools that teach virtually all year-round. They also offer supervised hire, if you need practise rather than instruction, you can go kite solo knowing there are instructors on the water to give a helping hand if you need it.
PICTURES TAKEN ON JO’S RECENT TRIP TO MOROCCO.
Have you ever been in an accident? Nothing serious, no, not beyond the impact from a bad landing which is always going to happen when you’re trying new things. As long as you know the place you’re kiting, recognise any hazards, and have judged the conditions and the forecast carefully, you’ll be absolutely fine. Just know your limitations and if in doubt, ask for advice.
What’s your favourite kitesurfing hot spot in the surrounding area? Branksome is my local regular spot - it’s beautiful whether it’s flat or wavey, and it can be great over on Studland on a north-easterly and always fun when there’s swell out on hook sands. Are there any places you would love to kitesurf around the world? South Pacific Islands, Maui, and anywhere in Central America and South East Asia, oh and South Africa, Mozambique and all up Africa’s east coast…
WWW.PETERHAZELLPHOTOGRAPHY.COM
Do you take part in any other watersports and land based sports? I surf, wakeboard, sea-kayak, SUP and swim, and also mountain bike, run and climb.
Finally, what’s the best place you’ve ever kitesurfed? Probably Kenya for warm water and great conditions for learning new tricks, and Morocco for howling wind and big waves.
What do you think of our coast and conditions for the sport? It’s a stunning coastline and so different depending on the sea state and where the wind’s coming from. We’re pretty lucky with our prevailing wind condition and because the coast curves more than you might think we can pick exactly the right spot according to how much westerly is in it. On top of that because of the harbour and Studland we can kite on virtually every wind direction, so never have to travel far.
Thanks very much for talking to us Jo; we wish you all the best with your sport and business.
IT’S A STUNNING COASTLINE AND SO DIFFERENT DEPENDING ON THE SEA STATE AND WHERE THE WIND’S COMING FROM. BRANKSOME IS MY LOCAL REGULAR SPOT - IT’S BEAUTIFUL WHETHER IT’S FLAT OR HAS SWELL. 29

Thank you very much for talking to us, Scotty. Please can you tell us about your disability? I have cerebral palsy. The symptoms of cerebral palsy vary greatly from person to person and depend on the type they have. Some people have problems walking and talking, while others are profoundly disabled and require lifelong specialist care. In my case I am unable to speak or walk and have involuntary movements in all of my limbs. My mind has not been affected. I am writing this article on my ipad using my nose. My ipad and phone are my main forms of communication.
31 year old, Scotty Bunter has cerebral palsy. He got involved with Bournemouth based charity, KiteRight, last year and gives us an exclusive insight into what kiting does for him and how it empowers him both mentally and physically.
Can you explain to our readers what power kiting is? Power kiting is one of the many disciplines of kiting. Power kiting occurs on land using ‘foil’ type kites (stands for aerofoil). They come in all sizes from small 1 m2 to large 15-16 m2 kites. They can be suitable for all ages/abilities in various wind conditions. Each make and type can be used for differing activities from static (or wheelchair) flying to using them to create traction pull for boards and buggies. Kiting and power kiting is not new. Kites were around 2800 years ago in ancient China and as long ago as 520 AD were recorded to be used to lift a man. How did you get involved with kiting? I met Gary who introduced me to KiteRight and he thought I may be able to fly the kites and control them. So, one day we tried it at Baiter Park and the rest, as they say, is history. Had you ever tried anything like this before? No, I have never had the chance to do anything like this before. I try as much as possible to lead a normal life. I go clubbing and to parties. I love Alton Towers and Thorpe Park. I really didn’t think I could be involved in what many see as an extreme sport but KiteRight proved me wrong.
30
What are you able to now with a kite during your sessions with the KiteRight instructors? When I first started kiting, it was really hard work due to my involuntary movements in my arms. I think the kite stayed in the air for no more than a few seconds. I have now learnt how to keep the kite airborne for longer which is really exciting. It’s also like a good work out in the gym which is good for me and helps with co-ordination and range of movement. What equipment do you use for power kiting? I have problems holding the bar, especially with my right hand. KiteRight has developed a bar with Velcro on and some gloves with Velcro stitched on them to help stop my hands sliding all over the bar and loosing control of the kite. KiteRight use Velcro and Duck Tape an awful lot! Where’s the best place to go kiting in the area? About the only place locally that welcomes power kiting is Baiter Park in Poole. It’s a really nice location as well being right next to the harbour. A summer’s day spent there is really relaxing. You are an ambassador and trustee for KiteRight. Why did you choose to work with them? KiteRight has helped me a lot to enjoy being more independent. They are an amazing group of people who just accept me for who I am. I like that they work so well with people with disabilities and I wanted to be more involved in the running and direction of the team. How is the charity making a difference for people with challenges? The charity gives them the ability to be more independent when some people find it hard to deal with life and all the challenges that entails. It helps them take some control back and have a feeling of self worth.
SPACE. IT’S BIG AND IT’S ALSO YELLOW! UPDATE FROM GARY HAWKINS, FOUNDER OF KITERIGHT Space. It’s big and it’s is also yellow. Space, we never have enough. But what is it? “Space is the boundless three-dimensional extent in which objects and events have relative position and direction”. Simple huh? No matter the complexities of definition, I needed more. I also needed space away from my house where the tools of the trade of the KiteRight charity were creeping into every nook and cranny. Every cupboard and shelf groaned under the weight of kites, helmets, flags and other paraphernalia. Our once minimalistic house was fast becoming a chaotic jumble. After a chance visit to a massive yellow warehouse to enquire about renting space we were amazed to be offered it for free. Yes free, nadda, zilch, zero, nothing, gratis. How could this be? The Big Yellow Storage Company across the UK has a proactive charity support service at each and every site. Across the UK the Big Yellow has donated over £56,000 worth of storage to charities across the UK in 2012 alone. Their staff also fundraises and have raised over £25,000 for good causes since April 2012. Their open, friendly and receptive approach also saw them double our storage recently to accommodate KiteBank, again for free. KiteRight would like to extend their thanks to an amazing company and local storage team in Poole. My house finally now has space! www.bigyellow.co.uk

THE RUB DOWN With Intulo Health Amanda Burger is the owner of Intulo Health (www.intulohealth.com), one of the South’s leading Sports and Remedial Massage specialists. Having served as official massage therapist for AFC Bournemouth, Amanda has experience dealing with patients as varied as top sports people to the general public, and with an outstanding knowledge of human anatomy, we’re delighted to have her offer her specialist advice in these pages.
The Patient
The Problem
James Bannister (36 years old). Vice President for a local company and travels with his job. Having competed at numerous different sports over the years, Motorcross, Quad Bike Racing and Squash, and an avid road cyclist, James came to see Amanda about lower back pain.
During James’ initial consultation, Amanda diagnosed that he had tight Hipflexors, meaning that his quadriceps were short – easy to understand given his daily position behind a desk or indeed his leisure activities on a bike. Amanda also identified that his sacrum (the joint in between the hips bones was slightly raised as a result of his gluteal muscles being very tight) and also his PSOAS muscle (one of the bodies biggest stabilising muscles) was short – something which can also cause rotation in the hip.
In this issue, Amanda has shared a common problem in cyclists, and equally one with anyone who sits in the same position for long periods daily. Why does it cause lower back pain? • In a tight and contracted state, your pelvis is effectively pulled forward which in turn shortens and weakens the hamstrings which are attached to the bottom of the pelvis. • The pressure exerted by the PSOAS whilst in a contracted state can compress the joints and the lumbar discs of the vertebrae of the spine. This pressure causes degeneration and will make them more susceptible to injury. • A shortened PSOAS on one side will pull the spine or pelvis to that side, leading to many painful problems including scoliosis. • A tight PSOAS will stop your gluteal muscles (backside) from firing and activating normally, and the gluteal muscles are another large stabilising muscle in the body so because the two muscles are opposing…if one is out of balance, the other weakens and vice versa. Amanda’s Solution • Stretch Daily: Add PSOAS and Hip Flexor stretches to your routine every day. • Release: The most effective way to release this muscle is through Deep Tissue Massage. See a qualified therapist or do it yourself using a tennis ball. Lay on the ball about 1-2 inches outside your belly button. You’ll feel your PSOAS respond as you lower yourself. It will hurt a little. Arch your back; come up onto your elbows. This will result in a more forceful stretch and release on your PSOAS. • Activate... Activate and strengthen your Gluteal muscles! And because prevention is better than cure... • Get a remedial programme from your massage therapist, enabling you to strengthen key areas. • Use a foam roller, especially after intensive physical activity. • Posture: The best sitting posture is one that always changes! Sit back in your chair, stopping you from leaning forward as much and thus shortening the muscle even further. • Don’t hook your feet under your chair. Rather set your feet flat on the floor or on a raise if necessary. • Stand up when performing exercises – a good contrast to your daily sitting position! • Stop sleeping on your stomach. • MOVE MORE! Look out in next month’s issue of The Game Magazine for more expert advice and tips from Amanda.

CIRC U Russell is the owner of The Conditioning Centre and is currently the Head Strength & Conditioning coach for sportBU at Bournemouth University. Every week Russell coaches hundreds of athletes from beginners to Great Britain representatives and members of the public to improve their sporting performance and reach their training goals. His dedication to improving his athletes and his personal drive to get better every day make him a coach who leads from the front and gets results.
s soon as the sun comes out I get loads more requests for circuits and conditioning sessions to help people lose fat and look good. Intense circuit training has become very popular in the last few years and there are loads of different styles of circuits that get people working really hard and making gains. I think we’ve all been to bodyweight training circuits in some random gym studio so I’m not going to talk about those. We’ve also all seen the YouTube videos of people being crippled trying to lift stupid weights for a billion reps in the fastest time. Hopefully I’ll be able to show you a few different ways to add a circuits element to your training whatever your time demands and goals without making those rookie errors. Most of the exercises in this article use load or some implement to make it more challenging, different and fun while still being simple enough to maintain form and prevent injuries. Here are three of the many ways that I implement circuits into the programmes of my members at The Conditioning Centre.
36 36
END OF SESSION FINISHER
FULL CIRCUITS SESSION
After completing some quality power and strength work it can be great to end the session with a conditioning element. It is usually a max of 10 minutes long and will consist of 3-5 exercises done for rounds in the fastest time. A good example would be: 20 Kettlebell swings 20 rope slams 40m sandbag carry 80m sled push. You could do 3 rounds with no break or time each round and try to beat the previous one each time. I promise you never will!
In this case the circuit is the session, so you’ll need more exercises. 10-12 seems to work really well. The idea is to try to get round the exercises with good form and load as fast as you can: 10 Pull ups 20 KB Swings 10 DB step ups each leg 80 Skips 30m Bear crawl 20 Tyre hits 30m Sled drag 10 DB renegade rows 40 Rope slams 15 Leg raises 10 DB Incline bench press 30 Mountain climbers You could also do this for a set time on each station e.g. 1 minute on each with 30 seconds to move and set up.
UITS 4 SESSIONS PER WEEK COACHING EVERY SESSION STRONGER FASTER FITTER MORE POWERFUL MONEY BACK GUARANTEE £60/MONTH MEMBERSHIP NO EXCUSES
STRENGTH & ENDURANCE These circuits will target a particular muscle group in each round. A good example would be to have 3 mini-circuits each consisting of 3 exercises for the same muscle group. The idea is to load the first movement pretty heavy then the following movements are lighter and easier but add reps. There is no rest between exercises in a round, just enough to move to the next one and set up. Complete 3 rounds of each muscle group mini-circuit, rest and move on. Back squat x 5, KB swing x 10, Lunge x 15 each leg Pull up x 5, Bent over row x 10, Inverted row x 15 DB Incline bench press x 5, DB incline fly x 10, Press up x 15
The idea with all these examples, is to work with the highest load you can complete the reps with in good form. So they’re more interesting than completing a thousand jumping jacks and will help you burn fat and build muscle, which are what almost every person in the world wants to do with their training.

SUTTONERS CRICKET CLUB EST. 1967 Formed in 1967 by Derek Hopkins and friends to give cricket to a bunch of their school and work mates. In 1968 they began a long but steady climb up through the divisions until in 1989 they reached the then First Division. Derek was followed by Andy Fitzjohn as skipper and over the next ten to fifteen years the first team won the B+DCA Championship five times, the DeZoete Charity Cup on six occasions and under the leadership of Kenny Morgan, reached the Premier Division of the Dorset Cricket League. They now field three sides in the Hampshire League, two of them having gained promotion in 2012 under the captaincy of Jonny Arnold and Wayne Murry, and are looking good, so far, to repeat the feat in 2013. Their first team are fortunate to play at Dean Park [one time home of Hampshire CCC] whilst their spiritual home ground is at Kinson Manor. MANAGER: Derek Hopkins, aka DelBoy, aka D-Hop. Not just a manager, Chairman, Prefect, Supreme Master, general busybody. The man has his own fan club, the DHBA (Derek Hopkins Barmy Army). An asset not only to Suttoners, but to cricket in the South as a whole; past, present and future. 36 38
The Clown – who keeps team spirits high?
The lightweight – who’s first to let the
Paul Dutton would be an easy choice as fans favourite. He is the proud owner of the sharpest tongue and most vicious banter around. However, from a captain’s perspective, this goes to Timmy Gritt. He’s the only person in the club who can lift more than his own bodyweight, enjoys musical theatre, covered in the worst tattoos we’ve seen, and to top it all off, is longer than the skippers lower leg. Timma will prove this on demand.
side down?
a. The Best at… Scoring runs? Paul Dutton again. Absolutely fearsome when on form. Paces things to perfection, whether it is a short burst of runs or an even shorter burst. Loves to win quickly and get back to the pub (ever since we introduced him to Jagerbombs). At 50, the elder statesman who refuses to grow up. At present Matt Hollier and the Arnold brothers, (Jonny and Nick), are young pretenders to the throne. b. Taking wickets?... Got to be the Chairman. The man has taken over 10,000 wickets in the local leagues. That said, he is about 112 years old and bowls his full quota every week without fail, or sometimes even being asked to. Creepy Rawlings, Paul Rendell, Jimmer Straight and Lee Hopkins have a fair few to his name over the years but remains a few thousand shy of DH. c. Dropping catches?! We could list almost everyone that plays but Benji Clifford is the main man. Only drops catches when someone turns up with a camera and he thinks they’re from the Echo so he goes for the Hollywood spectaculars. Matt Hollier drops his fair share but holdsome absolute stunners.
Chris Davies – CD has decided it would be appropriate to get a girlfriend in London. He was wrong. Other than that, Benji Clifford goes to about 10 weddings and ‘Warren’ Farnes who plays about 3 games a season. Oh, and how could we possibly not mention Kenny Morgan in this answer, will confirm he is playing or not approximately 30 minutes before the start of the game at best. Mr Vain – who absolutely rates themselves? I have got to stop writing Ben Clifford’s name. The biggest moaner? Easily former first team skipper Chris Rawlings. Too hot, too cold, too wet, too windy, uphill, downhill, my legs hurt, showers are cold, hot. Creepy loves a moan. He’s expecting twins too so that’s not going to improve! Lisa Ward wins the supporters award, never happy! Worst Dress Sense – who needs to update their threads? So many to choose from. Suttoners have a real issue with hats. From Jonny Arnold’s bucket hat to Derek Hopkins’ fedora, to Matt Ward – ‘the t**t in the goofy hat’. We also can’t leave out Toby Saunders and his love for anything with Mickey Mouse printed on... grow up! The team social spot – where is your designated clubhouse on a Saturday night? If it’s not at the home of cricket, Kinson Manor, it’ll probably be the Brunswick. An excellent place to start a night – although I’m pretty sure it was only chosen because that’s where the Paul Dutton fan club resides…
HAVE A GO
MISSION NO. 9
MY FOOD 2 WEEK PLAN JULY We’ve recruited local nightclub owner, JOSH SIMONS to work through our list of challenges trying out some of the area’s best activities and to be our ‘Have a go hero’. Josh showed some impressive skills on the pitch with the Oakmeadians Touch Rugby team in June. This month, we’re testing Josh on his willpower and how strong he can be to stick to the award winning diet plan from My Food. Two weeks of breakfast, lunch and dinner delivered direct to his door in which a loss of half a stone is achievable. Perfect timing to get his physique in tip top condition for the beach season (and one or two water related challenges we may have up our sleeve for the summer months!). Tell us how you felt after the Touch Rugby challenge? I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I’ve never liked playing rugby, I’m a golf and football man, but Touch offered the opportunity to play without getting smashed to pieces by animalistic, hench nutcases. I’d do it again. We’ve set you the challenge to stick to the My Food two week diet plan, how are you feeling about this one and have you tried diets in the past? I have attempted diets at various times, however they all seem to be gimmicky. This is the first time I’ve tried a diet like this, with 3 healthy meals a day prepared for you. I’m looking forward to it. Do you think you’ll be able to stick to this one? The food is delivered to you so very little prep needed… There’s no prep needed so no excuses, however, the last time I walked past the fridge in my kitchen at any time of the day or night without opening it was a long time ago. I hope I’ll have the willpower to stay away from my son’s ice cream.
AFTER… How did you find the plan and what was the food like? It was superb. Every single meal was tasty. It offered me a routine with my eating that I’ve never had before and now realise I lacked. Did you find the meals filling enough and which was your favourite? The meals were definitely filling enough. My favourite meal was actually one of the lunches. A Bangkok Salmon and Noodle Salad served chilled. The menu is varied and interesting. Be honest with us, did you manage to stick to the plan for the full 2 weeks? I had one night where I missed the dinner as I was out with friends. I ordered as close to a My Food meal as I could in the restaurant I was in. Chicken breast and some veg. I didn’t want to let myself down. You get on a roll with this plan because you see results almost straight away. How do you feel now and can you share any weight loss you’ve achieved?! I feel like a different person after 2 weeks. I have in fact ordered another 2 week’s worth already as I can’t see myself wanting to go back to the norm for a while. It really is the best thing I have done in regards to my diet. I have worked in clubs, bars and events for 10 years. I have realised what a battering my body has taken in regards to my diet. Late night pizzas, skipping meals without realising it. Pathetic really! I have lost 10lbs in just over 2 weeks on the My Food plan. I haven’t been to a gym either. Remarkable! Would you recommend the My Food plan to help with weight loss and healthy eating? A resounding yes. A few people have said it’s quite expensive. I have worked out I was spending the same on food and drink anyway with all the eating out in restaurants, takeaways, cafes during the day etc. I was constantly spending money on food and drink and my health was not benefiting. This is a great investment, there’s no denying that. Well done, Josh for completing your challenge. Read next month’s issue to find out how Josh gets on with the next one!

THE MINI CONVERTIBLE AT A GLANCE
The excellent balance between driving enjoyment and fuel consumption is achieved through systematically optimised engine design and extensive use of minimalism technology. The standard equipment of the MINI Cooper D Convertible includes Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start-Stop function and the Shift Point Display. Further features which increase fuel efficiency include electromechanical power steering, on-demand operation of ancillary units, and improved weight and aerodynamics. Minimalism features are standard on all current MINI models. As a result, 14 models from this British brand already have CO2 emissions of less than 120 grams per kilometre. Extensive use of Minimalism technology is fully in line with the BMW Group’s corporate strategy, which has long been geared to the principles of sustainability. This strategy has helped the BMW Group regularly achieve excellent results in independent third-party assessments. The MINI Cooper D Convertible’s excellent scores in these areas helped it achieve an overall rating as the most eco-friendly model in its class. A fuel-saving funster: the latest-generation diesel with common rail injection keeps consumption up to 70.6 mpg and emits just 105 g CO2 per kilometre.

S E I R R E H C t’s not every day your local football club gets promoted to the second tier of English football, and as AFC Bournemouth prepare for life in the Championship, the club is ensuring as many people as possible are embarking on the journey with them. Announcing excellent value season ticket prices earlier last month, record numbers renewed and the current total season ticket holders for 2013/14 stands at over 5500. Clearly the Goldsands Stadium is the place to be this year. Not only that but the club is continuing to engage with young supporters and families, looking to build on the Family Excellence award they received at last season’s Football League awards and spread the excitement even further. The popular young supporters club, the Junior Cherries, reached a landmark membership number of 1500 last season, and with national cinema chain Empire Cinemas now backing them, this year numbers are set to soar once more. Ticket prices have remained exceptionally low, starting at £5, whilst under-eights can attend all home league matches for free – and they still of course receive a shirt on their eighth birthday.
“With our success last season both on and off the pitch, there has never been a better time to be a Junior Cherry. With our membership price of just £6, members get a host of benefits including the fantastic value tickets and the chance to be a mascot at a home game.” 46
Junior Cherries co-ordinator Serena Stone said, “And of course there are all the usual added benefits which the children seem to love, including the Christmas party – though I’m not sure how we will top David James dressing up as a Christmas tree!” Last season’s introduction of the Junior Fanzone, sponsored by Broomhill Garden Buildings was also popular, with the family stand opening at 1.30pm on home matchdays, with player visits and a host of activities a regular occurrence - and this is set to continue this year. Not only pinning the benefits to Junior Cherries, families as a whole are also set to profit from the Cherries’ plans, with excellent value family tickets throughout the season, ensuring that with the new addition of the fourth stand, the atmosphere at the Goldsands Stadium will be electric. So now, with Eddie Howe’s squad returning from their summer breaks and preparations for the Championship season ahead in full swing, all that’s left to do is get on board, and enjoy the ride.
