As the dust finally settled on the 2013 Elite League Speedway season, the record books show that the gold medal went to the Poole Coastal Aluminium Pirates.It is the fifth time in a decade that the swashbuckling side have captured the sport’s top UK prize and their fourth consecutive League Final.

The Pirates’ management and fans never let their heads drop though. They kept the faith, safe in the knowledge that if they could just raise themselves to a top four league position by the end of the season it would be enough for a chance in the all-important Play-Offs. Boss, Matt Ford, showing no signs of throwing in the towel and, for the second time this year completely rebuilding his side, moved swiftly to sign the double World Champion, Greg Hancock, replacing the stricken Captain and, without hesitation, promoted the young Ward into the skipper’s role. It was a formula for success as the team responded and, motivated by the support of the Wimborne Road faithful along with the determination of Ford and Team Manager Neil Middleditch, set about the task of that fourth place. Following the Play-Off victory at league leaders Birmingham in October the passionate Poole supremo was quick to poor praise on his riders. “It really has been quite a season,” he says. “I think, more than any other season of my management, we have shown that rivals can knock and kick us, but it just makes us stronger and want to be more successful. I have been knocked out all year by riders like Maciej Janowski, Rohan Tungate and, from mid-season, Tomas H Jonasson, Greg Hancock and Josh Grajczonek who have all jumped in and rolled up their sleeves, now it feels like they have been Pirates for years!” “I love the way two words have introduced themselves into the club’s mantra over the last two or three years”. He continues. “Pirate Pride; just about sums up what we’re all about, what we have here is something very special indeed. The fact is I know when riders pull on the skull and crossbones; they feel they belong to a unique and winning mentality.” Ford remains, first and last, Pirate’s biggest fan, sharing every joy, every crash, every engine failure and every defeat with his ever loyal fans, it’s what makes the club a special unit and his own “Pirate Pride” has been rewarded once again.

Amanda shared an issue faced by a Client whom is an artist, a performer, a dancer and a dedicated student.

The Patient

The Problem

Christopher Andrews (16) Chris is a Bournemouth boy and started local drama classes at 5 years of age and then asked to take ballet, tap and modern lessons a year or so later, getting Distinction in the first of many dance exams at the age of 7. He had singing lessons from the age of 8 and continued to do drama, ballet, tap, modern and singing until recently, playing Charlie Bates in Oliver the Musical in the West End in 2010. Chris nearly gave up dance several times due to bullying at both primary and secondary schools and had to have his guard up every day at “normal” school. He was given a scholarship to attend Tring Park School Sunday Classical Ballet Academy for the last 2 school years and he also attended Central School of Ballet (London) Pre-Seniors every Saturday from Jan to July 2013.

Chris came to see Amanda because he was suffering with aches and pains in his back, chest, hips, calf muscles and feet! After an intensive assessment by asking relevant questions relating to the amount of hours he dances, watching his movements, identifying the weaknesses as well as the inhibited muscles, Amanda was able to assess what treatment is crucial to relieve the ongoing aches and pains as well as developing the right strengthening program to enhance his development as a dancer, especially within his age group. Chris dances for a minimum of 27 hours a week in the afternoons after school. 16.5 hours of those classes are ballet classes.

Last school year he really enjoyed being a member of the English National Ballet Youth Co, giving several performances in London this year. Chris won a funded place on the 6th Form Dance Course at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, Tring, Hertfordshire. He now studies Ballet, Contemporary and Jazz every afternoon at school, with A Level classes in Drama & Theatre Studies and Art in the mornings. Once Chris leaves his schooling, he hopes to join a Ballet Company such as ENB or a neo-classical ballet company, whilst continuing his art to supplement his income.

Ballet dancers strive for the ‘perfect turnout’ with their feet pointing directly side to side. The high degree of external hip rotation, or turn out, distinguishes ballet from other forms of dance. Rotation gives ballet positions and steps their characteristic line. Proper use of rotation, rotating from the hip, not the foot and lower leg can help protect a dancer from serious injury. Chris is naturally flexible as a result of dancing from such a young age and the amount of hours he dedicates to his practice, his flexible musculature enhances his technique and form, however, too much flexibility makes him vulnerable to injury. Problems occur when a dancer’s flexibility is out of proportion with their muscular strength. Chris’

flexibility expands his range of motion, but the lack of adequate muscle strength compromises the integrity of the supporting joints - i.e. his lower back, knees and ankle joints. Plantar flexion, or the ability to point the toes toward the floor is another stringent requirement of professional dancers, this position allows them to dance up on their toes, but this professional requirement comes at a sacrifice to their overall foot and ankle health. The muscles between the knee and the ankle joint are responsible for moving our feet, hence why Chris experiences aches and pains in his ‘calf’ muscles. Finally the extreme range of spinal motion imposed on dancers for the sake of their art often causes lumbar injuries as a result of excessive overstretching and back hyper-extension. So as a result the large Trapezius and Lattisimus Dorsi muscles in Chris’ back are working very hard to stabilise and support his shoulder and neck joints.

AMANDA’S SOLUTION Dance is physically demanding, whether you’re a professional or dance is your hobby. Classes, rehearsals, and performances are physically intensive. Dancers are well known for dancing through an injury, but regular massage treatments can help prevent the injury before it happens as well as releasing tension in the joints and tendons, improving flexibility and range of motion. Strengthening intrinsic muscles in the feet, lower limbs, hamstrings (to support the hips), gluteal muscles (all external rotators), lower back, mid thoracic, rotator cuff muscles as well as neck stabilisers is essential for Chris. However, it is essential that ballet dancers have the “perfect line” in their dance, so it is important that we don’t ‘over develop’ Chris’ muscles. Over development or strengthening can cause shortening at the tendons which could lead to lack of flexibility as well as creating more atrophy in the muscles which will cause them to bulk up. Exercise programs such as Pilates, balances flexibility with strength and prevents dance injuries associated with hyper-flexibility. Chris should combine hip flexibility exercises with hip strengthening workouts. Ballet dancers should balance their foot and ankle muscles by performing exercises that dorsiflex, or curl the toes toward the shins. Dancers with hypermobile feet and ankles have decreased spatial awareness, called proprioception, and require balance training exercises to avoid ankle sprains.

SO FAR SO GOOD FOR BOURNEMOUTH LIONS BETTER START TO THE SEASON – BUT A LONG WAY TO GO Despite a bit of a thrashing at the hands of Canterbury on October 19, most people associated with Bournemouth Rugby Club would be happy with their 1st XV’s current fourth place standing (out of 16) in National Division 2 South. The league campaign is approximately one quarter completed and the Lions are in a much better position now than at this time last season. Back then, with just two wins and 5 losses, they languished at 11th in the division, with half the number of points accumulated so far. This year they have even been in top spot for a week or so, but perhaps that was too flattering for a team in transition. As previously reported in The Game, the Bournemouth club’s Director of Rugby, Budge Pountney, is new, as is head coach Paul Dunne. Some new players have joined the squad and a new, faster, more adventurous style of play has been

adopted. With so many new ingredients in the mix (plus a few unfortunate injuries to key personnel) consistent matchwinning performances are difficult to achieve. However, the overall impression is of a team on the up. That has been confirmed by the increased attendances for home matches at Chapel Gate, with more people young and old going along to watch games which have delivered unexpected levels of skill and excitement. For example, a magnificent come-back against Dings Crusaders from Bristol delivered a victory with the last kick of the game. In the next home match, a convincing win over the Cornish powerhouse of Redruth produced more ecstatic cheers. Getting the team and tactics formula right has proved more difficult for away matches. The Canterbury defeat was preceded a couple of weeks earlier by another at Exmouth, although a creditable draw was achieved in the Cambridgeshire countryside at Shelford. Undoubtedly the long coach journeys have a negative effect on the Lions players, but to be playing at their current National League level there is no getting away from some tiring road trips. Thankfully the final match in October is again at home, against Hartpury College from Gloucester, who will represent a very stiff challenge. Budge Pountney has made it clear that he does not want his team to reproduce the poor performance shown against Canterbury. Much hard work is being put in both on and off the pitch to make sure Bournemouth Lions improve still further and maintain their position in the top half of the league. Article: Paul Martin

The Best Sources of Protein Defined The next time you are toiling up the supermarket aisles debating on which foods to buy for your protein intake, remember protein can only be absorbed from foods termed either ‘complete’ or ‘incomplete’. Complete proteins are foods which generally come from soy, animal and fish products and house an adequate amount of all 20 essential amino acids. Incomplete or ‘partial’ proteins therefore are foods which lack one or more essential amino acids. Being told at this point that ‘fish and meat products’ are the most complete sources of protein is naturally not ground breaking news. However before you skip the page, it is important that you understand the differences and even potential health risks between the individual foods in each of these two sources. When I say ‘health risk’, surprisingly, I am not referring to the links between red meat overconsumption and pancreatic cancer, poor reproduction and osteoporosis which has been publicised more recently in the media. I am in fact referring to the condition ‘Gout’, which is stimulated through eating high purine (organic compound) meats and fishes such as pate, chicken livers, and sardine’s (see table 1 below). Gout occurs as an over consumption of high purine foods leads to increased levels of uric acid in the bloodstream which causes crystals to form and accumulate around the joints typically the feet. It is therefore recommended then that no more than 170 grams of complete proteins is consumed each day and food intake is based on more medium purine meat and fish sources, alongside dairy products such as milk, cottage cheese and Greek yoghurt.

Protein Supplements What is interesting is in my experience, high protein diets often result more from supplement use and not the natural food sources mentioned above. Protein supplementation is now big business; according to the latest Euro-monitor, figures in the UK alone show sales in protein shakes have increased from £73m in 2007 to £170m in 2012 and are expected to reach £358m by 2017. Despite the heavy marketing I am often confronted by many confused individuals with a plethora of posed questions around the use of protein supplements. Some of the popular FAQ’s often centre on utilising protein shakes to … ‘Lose weight? Gain muscle? Help recovery? Improve Health?’. My initial answer to any questioning around supplement use is always the same; define the word ‘supplement’. Food supplements were originally designed to solve a deficiency in our diets, if your dietary intake and macronutrient breakdown is already adequate, you only need to maintain this with your current choice of food sources. If due to time restraints this is not the case for your protein intake, then try to absorb extra protein first through whole food snacks or by preparing meals in advance to eat on the go.

SEAN BURGESS // Positive energy breeds success Naturally, protein shakes are designed to be heavily protein based, which often means they fail to provide significant amounts of carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. Even if a commercial protein shake or supplement is fortified (has added nutrients); it will fail to offer the same level of nutrition as whole foods such as eggs, nuts and lean meats. Aside from developing nutrient deficiencies, individuals who use shakes to replace meals for weight loss often find they gain weight again when supplementation stops and they return back to previous eating habits. In addition there is strong universal evidence which shows most protein shakes contain elements of heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. For example the magazine ‘Consumer Reports’ in July 2010 analysed 15 different protein drinks and shakes and found that each one was contaminated with heavy metals. Remember metals when consumed in excess can be toxic, which causes the immune system to weaken and even lead to cancer. However don’t be put off too much, some protein shakes do have healthy ingredients, are free of contamination and do serve as a nutritious meal replacement. For those of us out there which are short on time due to work and family demands, shakes are beneficial. My advice if looking to purchase a protein shake is remember you are what you eat, so don’t be afraid to spend a little bit of extra money to give your body the best nutrients. In addition always read the nutrition labels on every supplement carefully to avoid high quantities of sugar, cholesterol and saturated fat and importantly try to buy complete organic protein sources such as whey, soy and casein.

N O R A E Y 1 The Game headed over to Prevail Skatehouse in Poole to check out the famous indoor skate park and fantastic facilities. As they approach their 1st birthday, we chatted to them about where they have come over the last year and the great following they have from people of all ages and abilities.

Prevail Skatehouse in Poole are coming up to their one year birthday. Although the project had been in the making for a few years previous, they opened the doors just before Christmas last year on the 23rd December 2012. The success to date has proven that there was a great need for an indoor park on the south coast. The further north you head in the UK, you get plenty of choice…it does rain down here too! Having somewhere inside, sheltered from the changeable weather we get in the UK, was needed locally for people to use and enjoy.

The team at Prevail are proud to say, they have almost everything you need under one roof here with the skatepark being open 7 days a week from 10am – 10pm. They have a wonderful café serving tasty eats and refreshing drinks which is run by one of the young skateboarders’ mum. The brand new BMX shop, ‘Entity Bike Shop’ recently opened alongside the ‘Skate Shop’ who themselves have over 40 years involvement in the local scene! There are so many types of people who use the park during the week, from the weekend junior sessions to coaching sessions and experienced pros. The newest addition is birthday parties at Prevail which are proving to be very popular with a great time had for all participants.

We’re speaking to local children taking part in different sports across the area to ask about why they like to compete, what their goals are for the future and how others can give it a go in our ‘One to watch’ feature.

Harrison is 12 years old and in year 8. He attends Muscliffe Karate Academy and is a black belt. His younger brother, Rhys who is 8 years old is following in his footsteps and currently a green belt. Harrison loves the outdoors and enjoys skateboarding, surfing, camping as well as playing and listening to music.

Hi Harrison, can you tell us how you first got into Karate? When I was younger, I watched lots of martial arts with my dad on TV/DVD. My dad has always been interested in it and he encouraged me to give it a go, so I joined Muscliffe at the age of 6. Congratulations on recently gaining your black belt, how hard was it to work up to that level? Very hard! I have worked for this for the last 6 years. There have been times this year that I was doing anywhere from 8-10hrs a week which included normal training hours, extra black belt training and competition training with a few extra nights thrown in. The black belt exam was carried out over 2 days - 7 hours in total. The first day was compulsory training for 5 hours, you had to pass this to come back the following day and test. It took place, June this year. Can you tell us about your competitions and wins you’ve had this year? This year, I entered the EGKA southern completion (EGKA is the governing body for the style of karate that I do: Goju Ryu). I’ve competed in these comps for the last 5 years, winning some and losing some. This year I came 1st in Kumite (sparring) and 2nd in Kata which then automatically put me through to the EGKA National Championships in 9-11yr category where I got 2nd Kumite and a 3rd in Kata so it has been a good year for me. Do you take part in any other sports? No, I just focus on my karate, but as I have said, I love to skateboard and I’ve just taken up surfing. 20

What does your training involve and how do you keep your fitness levels up? Normal training sessions are 1 1/2 hrs twice a week, but when competitions and big belts are coming up, there’s lots of support and extra sessions available. I’ve just moved up to the adult class as a cadet which is hard work. My Sensei, Gary, who is 5th Dan, pushes us really hard with sparring, katas, self discipline and defence. I keep up my fitness by doing karate, a good diet, other aerobic exercise and never sitting still! Do you have a sporting role model? My role model is Higawana Sensei. He is a 10th Dan black belt and he is the head Sensei of my karate style Go ju Ryu. I love watching him on youtube. How do you balance your school work with your training? My mum sorts it all, she makes it all work and fit in. What are your hopes and goals? I want to be a WKF Champion (world karate federation) and maybe even be in the Olympics one day. I would also like to teach others. Can you describe in four words what Karate means to you? Discipline, fitness, self-defence, confidence. Finally, what would you recommend for people wanting to give it a go? It’s great for fitness and I have made lots of friends. It’s good for self discipline, defence and confidence. The cold virus is highly contagious being passed on by inhaling the virus of somebody close to you who has it or by touching surfaces and objects around us that may have respiratory secretions on them. Opening a door, then touching your mouth, eyes or nose is one of the common ways colds get passed on from person to person. Some people seem more prone to picking up colds whilst others seem to breeze through the colder months unscathed. This could be due to immune systems not being strong enough to stand up to the nasties around us. Our immune systems have to work hard all year round but in the winter months, you may want to look at ways to strengthen your defences to keep as healthy as possible. The intricacy of the immune system means it can create a barrier that protects us from bacteria and viruses entering our bodies. If something gets past the barrier, it recognises it and produces white blood cells, chemicals and proteins to attack the germs. When functioning at its best, our immune systems continually work to keep up the defenses against many health threats from common colds to more serious diseases. But when it is weakened through bad diet, lack of sleep, chronic stress or inactivity, toxins, bacteria and germs can overwhelm our bodies resulting in illness.

So, it’s been just over a year as a new dad, many happy returns for your son’s 1st birthday. How are you finding it? It is life changing but I wouldn’t change it for the world. You can’t really explain it to people until they have a son or daughter for themselves. It’s truly the best thing in the world and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Have you had many sleepless nights?! There were quite a few in the first four months, but he’s in a nice routine now and apart from the odd night, he sleeps 12 or 13 hours.

It’s been a great start to the season for Southampton, what do you put the recent success down to? A lot of hard work. We’ve had three or four big signings this summer and with the new manager’s ideas that he has got across to us, the hard work is starting pay off now on a Saturday and we’re getting positive results. Hopefully we can continue our form. Staying up last season was a great achievement, what’s the clubs ambition for this time round? We’re in 4th position at the moment (at the time of interview) and we want to stay there and take each game as it comes. Obviously, we want to stay in the division, that’s a must now, but we want to improve on last year’s position and look to the top half and Europe. How has Mauricio Pochettino made a difference to the club? He’s made a massive difference since he’s come in. It was almost immediate the effect he had on the lads on and off the pitch and in training. The environment…everything…everyone is a lot happier. The language has never been a problem, his English is getting better day by day and it’s a really enjoyable atmosphere to go in to work every day. The club has spent some big money on players this season. What difference have those players made? A big difference. It’s upped the quality in training and its competition for places and that’s credit to Nicola Cortese, the Chairman, who has funded the money for the manager to spend. It has been a joint effort from everyone through the club which is why we’ve stepped on a level or two this season and found ourselves doing really well in the league. Has the banter in the changing room altered what with all the changes? No, not really. We’ve got a good group of players and a wide range of nationalities and its all part of the fun people getting to learn the different cultures and banter…it’s all good. What’s been the stand out moment for you so far this season? Probably the win at Anfield. It’s a special ground with a lot of history and tradition. To lead the lads out there and pick up a famous 1-0 win was something I’ll never forget and it was the main reason that led us to have three back to back wins.

Definitely and he proved to everyone it was the right call up. He scored the goal against Scotland and another one in the qualifier and played a tough game against Ukraine and I think he’s a familiar face in the squad now. Whenever the squad gets announced, he’s there or thereabouts so hopefully he has a good season and gets called up for the World Cup. …and how about your England future? Are you confident on breaking back into the squad? It’s a future ambition of mine. I’m concentrating on my club football at the moment and want to play well for them and keep winning games and scoring goals. If it happens again this season, then obviously I’d be delighted. Who is the best player you have come up against so far this season? Probably Daniel Sturridge at Liverpool; he’s had a great start to the season and although we beat them, he looked lively and dangerous every time he had the ball. Apart from St. Mary’s, what is your favourite ground to play at? I think Old Trafford. Last season we did well there, we lost 2-1 but we deserved a result. It’s just got tradition; it’s an old ground with 70,000. We kept them quiet for the majority of the night. What is the best thing about being a professional footballer? I just think it’s the day to day life that we love. Being fortunate to wake up every morning and go to training and do what we love; you don’t appreciate that all the time. It’s a career that is over quite quickly so you’ve just got to appreciate it every day because you don’t realise how quick time flies and before you know it, I’ll be retired and looking for another path and career. MARATHON 5/6.10.13 Deputy Mayor completes Bournemouth marathon against the odds We spoke to Deputy Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Phil Stanley-Watts following the event, about his commitment to complete the race for charity, despite his heart condition following recent surgery. Hi Phil, congratulations on taking part in Bournemouth’s first ever marathon. Can you tell us how you got on and your time? It was harder than I thought and an eventful race for me! I’m a former runner and have done marathons and distance races before and it was the slowest time I’ve ever recorded of 5 hours 30 minutes and 43 seconds. I didn’t do sufficient training and was running with professional marathon runners. The winner came in at 2 hours 16 minutes. It was important for me to actually finish it for the charities I was running for.

Describe the atmosphere? The support was fantastic out there. There were a lot of people cheering me on. I had my charity T- shirt on so people could see who I was running for. Even the marshals were encouraging and helping me along the way.

The first Bournemouth Marathon Festival took place over the 5th-6th October with events for all ages and abilities from a junior race on 1.5km up to the full marathon on Sunday 6th October. Taking in the stunning but challenging route of the spectacular coastline and heritage sites of our surrounding area, thousands of runners took to the streets, paths, piers and prom to take part in the race.

You mentioned about other marathons you have raced in, can you tell us about your running history? I used to do a lot of long distance and marathon races but I usually run shorter charity races these days. In 1984, I completed a 30 mile race in just over 3 hours. I’ve done around 25 long distance races; so marathons and above and first started doing them in my early 20’s. Really, marathon runners these days aren’t at the top of their profession until their early 30’s. Talk us through the build up to the event in terms of your training schedule and when it all started? The Bournemouth Marathon was the first distance race that I took part in for many years. Over the course of a week, I did quite a few different types of runs and intervals culminating with a long run on Sundays. I think these days, competitive running is more focused on the science and eating the right foods along with training programmes to increase endurance. I ate a lot of carbohydrates so baked potatoes, pasta and fish. It all started around 6 months before the race. Sometimes I had two training sessions a day but generally it was one just before lunch. I feel I didn’t do enough of the longer runs. It is important to acclimatise your body to the longer races, so more than 15 or 20 miles. You need to commit yourself to a lot of training.

What did you think of the route? I have run in races all over the world and this one was one of the most intriguing and scenic routes I’ve ever run. The route went out to the ends of each pier and after about 19 miles; you are faced with a hill climb up the cliff towards the Highcliff Hotel. Before that, there was another hill climb at around 10 miles towards Boscombe Gardens. There were quite a few sharp turns. The one near the Russell Coates Museum was where I almost fell over! I’ve run every kind of race over the years and this was definitely the most interesting taking in all the coastal areas of the conurbation.

How well do you think the event went it being the inaugural marathon in Bournemouth? It was very well organised. As a competitor, you had awareness that there were people out there cheering you on it was a good atmosphere. The event had the most first aid and medical people I’ve ever seen at a marathon. They had ambulances out on the sea front, paramedics on bikes and first aiders along the course. I did see people collapse and they would only be on the ground for a few seconds and paramedics were there immediately. It was a safe course. There has been some criticism from businesses about the road closures having a bad effect on their businesses. Also, they only gave the results for the first ten so perhaps that is something that can be worked on for the next one.

Which charities were you running for and how much have you raised? I was running for the Mayors charities: the Coda Fiddle Charity, a children’s orchestra based in Boscombe, Wessex Cancer Trust, Bournemouth Churches Housing Association, the Steve Bernard Foundation, Kitty’s Wish Foundation and Diverse Abilities Plus. The figure is still to be confirmed as money is still coming in.

Finally, will we see you back again next year? I’ve said I’m not going to run another marathon. I didn’t do the training adequately and found it difficult. Then again, I have recently had an operation for my heart condition. I’m on 8 tablets and had to stop on the route which slowed me down. The last four miles my back ached and my feet had blisters. LAKEFEAR19.10.13 THEY CAME - THEY BATTLED - THEY CONQUERED Saturday 19th October saw over 200 competitors take on inaugural extreme race event, Lake Fear. Descending on the perfect location of New Forest Water Park, people came from the surrounding area and from further afield to run the 5km route that included 20 gruelling obstacles to tire and test. Commencing with a tyre run around a vast field, onto netting, huge pits in the ground, two lake crossings, walls, hurdles and many more thrilling challenges, the exhausted runners finished with smiles on their faces having conquered the circuit which ended with a giant water slide to hurl them towards the finishing gate. Local sports clothing brand, Pure Warrior entered a team of runners of all abilities to raise money for Daniel Dodd, a 2 year old boy suffering from terminal childhood cancer. Charlotte Darling of Pure Warrior commented, “We have pulled together and have had such amazing support, the Lake Fear team were amazing! We’re so humbled to have smashed our goal to raise money for ‘Daniels Dream.’ Thank you to everyone who took part and donated, we couldn’t have done it without you.” Marc Smith, Co-Founder of the brand added, “Team PURE WARRIOR, all 35 of us were proud to take on Lake Fear. It was the final stage of fundraising for little Daniel and we raised £5,525, we did it!” Mel Rayner, event director commented, “Our first Lake Fear event was a huge success. We were delighted with so many people taking part in the race and the great feedback we’ve been getting. We’re already planning the next one for April 2014 and can safely say, it will be longer, harder, grittier and tougher! Becky-Beth is a full time single mum of her two beautiful girls. She works part time, as a driving specialist and instructor and lives near Verwood. Hi Becky-Beth, how did you first get into motor racing? I had a love for cars from an early age and started driving soon as I could. Some friends of mine, who were in to doing track days, dared me to take my 1 ltr 106 around Castle Coombe circuit. So I did, and really enjoyed it. I went on to doing more and bought a track car. I then started co-driving in rallying; this was my main first step into the sport itself. I did that for a few years then progressed into the driver’s seat and that is how my racing started.

Tell us about the cars you have raced in, which is your favourite and why? I have raced mainly saloon cars, in my career so far; so hot hatches, Fiesta, Beetle, 106. My favourite car was my orange Fiesta it was an amazing little race car, but now I would say my Saxo which I have been racing this year. Despite her condition (needs a rebuild of the engine), she has got me through this season, not as powerful as my Fiesta, but she’s a good little racer. Can you tell us about competitions and wins you’ve had so far in your career? So far this season, I have been racing in the Track Attack Race Club French Series, which has been great fun. I’ve done eight races so far this season with 6 x 1st in class, 1 x 2nd in class 1 x dnf. Unfortunately, I didn’t get out for the last race of the season, my engine needs some TLC but I’m hoping to get out for the winter series at Donnington which is three races. Where is your favourite race track? Ooo that’s tricky! I would say Castle Combe and Brands Hatch.

You are also a driving specialist for Mercedes-Benz, what does that involve? Yes, I work as a driving specialist, so I am the instructor who takes guests through their driving experiences on the handling circuits, teaching driving, racing techniques and exercises mainly in AMG’s and limited edition Mercedes. On the track we also do hot laps which is great giving guests a thrill ride in an AMG. We also do 4x4 driving experiences, taking the off roaders to the limits. It’s a great place to work.

What other sports do you enjoy to watch or take part in? I watch the BTCC, and some of the GT’s. I also watch the Clio Cup and I would like to compete in this one soon but would have to raise a big sponsorship budget for that! I love swimming; you’ll find me up the swimming pool at least 3-4 times a week. I also enjoy tennis and badminton but don’t really get chance to play, with work, kids and racing. You’re a mum of two young children, how do you find balancing your home, work and racing? It’s busy that’s for sure! Racing takes up only one weekend a month at the moment through the season. Being organised and planning is the way I make it all flow together. I like to be busy, but also making sure I take time out, so I don’t overdo things. I work part time and have an amazing childminder which enables me to carry on working and a supportive mum and step dad. So everyone is happy. I am very lucky to be fully sponsored this year, as being a single working mum; it just wouldn’t be possible without it. I work hard for my sponsors and it has all paid off, after years of running two or three jobs, trying to self fund. What are you training for next and what are your hopes and goals for the future? Well, I have been asked to have a test in Team E.S. Touring Car, so this is very exciting for BTCC. So, will see how the test goes… watch this space. In an ideal world, I would like to be competing in the Clio Cup then the Touring Car, but again, it’s all down to budget. I am going to be competing in the French Trophy Series again next year and hope to get some more racing in to test for the Clio Cup, which would be great. Finally, what would you say to females wanting to try motor racing and what is the best way to get involved? There are many ways, they are always crying out for Marshals. Join your local car club to get involved. To start racing, get some track time under your belt, then do your race licence, find a good team and car and off you go! There are affordable race series out there. Track Attack Race Club run various championships with a range of levels and abilities providing affordable racing, as it is an expensive sport. We’re talking to the founders of PirateCast this month, Poole Speedway’s very own unofficial podcast! From two young boys who discovered Speedway, to the launch of their own website and regular podcast featuring interviews, news and updates on the fast-paced Speedway season, Lee and Ben tell us about how it all came about and some of the highlights. Tell us a bit about your history and how you first got into Speedway? Lee: My first experience of speedway was back in 1987. At the time, my Dad worked for the Bournemouth Echo who was the main team sponsor for the Pirates in the late 80’s and early 90’s. As part of that sponsorship, we got to go to regular meetings during the season and it got me hooked! Ben: Lee invited me along to watch a match in 1988 I think! I was 10. The sport has everything, bikes, noise, thrills ‘n’ spills everything a young lad would be impressed by! One thing I have always appreciated about the sport is the access fans get to the riders; it really is second to none! How did you come up with the podcast idea and tell us about the early days? Lee: I’ve been involved in online sport radio for a number of years and it was always something that I thought would work well with speedway. The seed was planted at the end of the 2010 season when we suffered the heartbreaking loss to Coventry in the playoff finals. We noticed a number of fans leaving before the end of the meeting, almost turning their backs on the team because they didn’t win as expected. At that point, we felt that there was a major lack of positivity towards the team and wanted to put something forward that would be a vehicle for 100% fan support and positivity both during and after the season. Ben: Lee had the idea and asked if I would be interested. The time was right and we took a leap of faith. As Lee said, we were really let down by the fan reaction to the Coventry defeat and the aftermath. Getting it going was easy; Lee had the equipment from his previous venture so we gave it a go! It just felt natural. We both love the sport and have enough knowledge and experience to hold a conversation or debate. At the end of the day, it’s a show where we discuss speedway (predominantly the Pirates) we try and make it light-hearted; like a conversation you’d have at the stadium or down your local whilst trying to get fans interacting as well. How often do you broadcast? Lee: That’s the $1,000,000 question! To begin with, we planned on doing bi-weekly shows over the winter and then move to a weekly podcast during the season. A combination of work schedules, a very stop-start season for Poole, and just general timing between the two of us has meant we’ve been a lot less regular in 2013. We’re working on a few changes over the winter that will enable us to stick to a more fixed schedule. Ben: I have to saying wasn’t sure about recording whilst down at the stadium but we’ve had really great feedback about it! We were only saying the other day though, that we cannot wait to record in the studio again and have a bit more debate. The goal I feel will be bi-weekly during the season next year and at least 1-2 a month during the winter (with these shows being longer)

It’s been an eventful season at Wimborne Road, finishing with the incredible win at Birmingham on the 15th October. Summarise your thoughts on the season and the championship title... Lee: There were points early in the season where we thought it would be over way before October. With injuries to the vast majority of our riders over the year, including the devastating injury to Chris Holder, you couldn’t have written a better start to a comeback story than Poole Speedway this year. The energy amongst the fans has been electric during the play-offs and you could see the motivation it gave the riders. All the obstacles the team overcame makes this the sweetest league victory to date. Ben: Seeing the team introduced at Press & Practise and seeing the team spirit and belief, really made me feel we would have an outstanding season. However, at the start of the season our 1-7 had a lot of difficulty firing at the same time. Losing Darcy Ward so early on then losing Chris Holder just when Darcy had recovered has to be a low. I also remember playing the funeral march on an episode we recorded watching our away match at Birmingham! What a difference 4 months made! The Pirates were up for it from the start and were ruthless in taking the title! Who has been your favourite interviewee? Lee: Mine has to be the chat we had with Chris Holder towards the start of the season. Chris is probably the busiest guy in the team when it comes to dealing with the media so it was great for him to give up his time for an interview with us. It doesn’t get any better than the (then current) World Speedway Champion!

Ben: For me there are two; our interview with Neil Middleditch was great! It was the first time I had interviewed anyone professionally. Middlo was great; he answered all of our questions honestly and had a lot of time for us. It ended up being a half hour interview! The other one was our recent interview with Greg Hancock. We received so much positive feedback from our listeners. I feel that interview showed how far we have come. Greg is a LEGEND of the sport but a true gentleman. Who is your favourite rider? Lee: It would have to be Darcy Ward. He’s got such a bright future ahead of him, and win or lose you know it’ll be an exciting race with Darcy involved! Ben: Chris Holder, the guy is a fantastic role model for youngsters. He is one of the utmost relaxed riders I’ve ever met. He’s one of the youngest World Champions the sport has seen and still has a massive future. I genuinely believe he would have been there or thereabouts this season had it not been for his crash. Do you try and attend all home races and how far have you travelled for an away meeting? Lee: I get to as many home meetings as work allows. If I’m working I am constantly checking the updates on Twitter. As far as away fixtures I’ve been to a lot of the southern tracks: Swindon, Eastbourne, Exeter and Rye House. Also Kings Lynn, Peterborough and Cardiff this year for the British GP! Ben: I think I’ve missed one home meeting this season but unfortunately not managed to get to an away one this year. What is great is that we have had members of the #PirateCastArmy who live further afield and attend the away matches who provide us updates to share on social media. When is the next podcast out and what can listeners expect? Lee: Our most recent show was recorded during the first leg of the play-off final and you can really hear the roar of the crowd and take in the whole Wimborne Road atmosphere. Thanks for talking to us Sam. Can you tell us a bit about your history and how you got into watersports? My Dad got me into windsurfing and first taught me in Poole Harbour, once he had got me hooked it was then a good excuse to make any family holiday we could, a windsurfing one. I then became an instructor at 18 with my first job at FCWatersports by the Harbour. After that, everything I did was watersports related, working overseas during and after Uni, making sure I could be on the water as much as possible.

SUP has been pretty recent; I got sent two boards when I was managing a centre in Greece. I immediately saw the appeal and used to use one to commute to work every day. That was only in 2008, since then the sport has diversified into so many different areas which has been great. That has lead me to get more into waves and racing. You started off rowing and got to a good standard, what made you choose to progress your other watersports? I was already Windsurfing when I started Rowing but spent most of my time as a COX (sitting at the back of the boat steering and shouting at people). It pretty much took over everything I did for a few years and ended up becoming a bit all or nothing. When I had an opportunity to become a Windsurfing instructor, I changed tack (pardon the pun) but ended up coaching Rowing at Exeter University for a few years. When SUP came along it ticked all the boxes that Rowing had plus gave me a lot more flexibility. That’s probably why I took it up so quickly. …and do you row anymore? Not anymore, I did coach for a few years but SUP now fulfils that gap. What on the water with your stand up board, do you prefer, flat water paddling or wave riding? A good wave session is the best but you’ll almost always have a good flat water session if you’re in the right frame of mind. The other way to look at it is the both help each other so again as long as I’m on the water I’m pretty happy. What are your thoughts about rigid boards and inflatables? My Red Paddle Co inflatable boards have been a total game changer for me this year. Due to space, they have allowed me to have an extra board and so with racing enter different categories depending on the event type and conditions. I’ve been able to travel around Europe with a 14ft board coaching and to events with no excess baggage issues. They really have allowed me to paddle anywhere without compromising the experience.

Hard boards are great and I still have a couple especially my small wave board, but more and more I find myself defaulting to my inflatables simply for ease of use, fitting in with everything else I’m doing and even the performance they give me. Even if you own a hard board I really think everyone should own an inflatable as well, it’s a piece of kit that to put it most simply gets you on the water. Can you tell us about any competitions/wins you’ve had with your sports? I’ve recently come back from the 11 City SUP Tour in Holland. A 5 day stage race around a 220km (136 Miles) loop through the canals and Lakes of the Friesland area of Holland. It’s the toughest race I’ve ever done, racing between 5 ½ to 6 hours a day. I had a couple of issues during the competition including some pretty major blisters and I snapped my paddle on the last day but still managed 14th overall in a pretty international field. I was also the first and only person to race in on an inflatable in a field of around 100 people mostly on carbon boards. I also won the SUP 14ft class Duathlon at the National Watersports Festival Last month. What do you think of the conditions locally in Bournemouth and along the coast? They could not be better! For SUP no matter what the tide state or wind direction there is always somewhere to paddle with some spots that might even offer the odd wave. For windsurfing again every wind direction is covered and if you are learning Poole Harbour must rate as one of if not the best spot in the world. SUP seems to have really taken off locally over recent years and our coastline is seeing more and more people giving it a go. What is the attraction, do you think? It’s accessible, and unlike quite a few sports or Watersports especially you can enjoy it with very little experience. Also it allows access to almost any piece of water and at the other end of the sport there seems to be a continually expanding number of directions you can progress into. For a lot of people I think it also ticks fitness boxes, Core stability etc. But if you’re from the local area and don’t yet take advantage of the coast line around you SUP has to be the best and quickest way to get involved. Which surf report to you use to check out conditions locally? I tend to look at as many as possible especially ‘Magic Seaweed’ and ‘inthelements’. But the live updates you get from local schools, shops and centres are the best. I was working from home the other day and saw on the Surfsteps facebook page that it had suddenly got good which meant I snuck out for an hour. I wouldn’t have got that detail of info from a normal Surf report. Where is a good place for people who may be thinking about giving SUP or windsurfing a go? You couldn’t be better looked after in Poole and Bournemouth. If you want to Windsurf or do both then The Watersports Academy is one of the best centres in the country with an unbeatable location. For SUP, there are lot of different options from Surf Steps Surf School in Boscombe, Easyriders and the SUP School. What’s your favourite SUP hot spot in the surrounding area? I always like getting out for a paddle at Branksome Chine as it’s my closest spot but my best wave days have been at Kimmeridge. …and your favourite windsurfing spot? Pretty similar story really, you’ve got to love your local so Branksome Dene Chine but again, I’ve had my most memorable sessions at Kimmeridge. Describe your sport in three words… Best Fun Afloat Finally, where is the best place you’ve ever been to take part in your sports? I’ve been lucky enough to work in Greece, Egypt and Turkey as well as travel to other parts of Europe and the Canaries. But my best days in both sports are in the UK, and again just down the road at Kimmeridge. Thank you Sam and we wish you all the best in the future with your sports.

Hi Michael, thanks for talking to us and congratulations on the new team. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how the creation of this new team came about? I have been coaching both Wheelchair and Running Basketball for over 40 years in Canada, US, Australia and the UK. Our club wanted to keep the legacy of the London Paralympics alive so decided to pursue funding to set up a Wheelchair Basketball Club. We were aided in our quest by Active Dorset (Sport England- Sportivate Funding) as well as Dorset County Council and Ferndown Leisure Centre. We are looking to hopefully expand and set up a couple of more clubs within Dorset. Who can get involved? We deliver coaching for both Wheelchair and Running Basketball. The game of Wheelchair Basketball is an inclusive sport which means that you can participate whether you are disabled or nondisabled. Our message is that Basketball is for everyone and we encourage both disabled and non-disabled oarticipants to attend. At the Club, we will be looking to enhance the players individual and team skills in the hope of playing competitive matches. If competition is not what you are after, then come along to improve your skills, socialise and have a good time.

Do you have the equipment for people who don’t use a wheelchair to use? We have 26 Wheelchair Basketball sports chairs for the players use within the club. There are various sizes of chairs ranging from junior to XL so something to suit everyone. The game must require quite a bit of upper body strength, tell us about your training? During our training sessions, we work on building upper body strength and other aspects of the game. We are currently building up our player base and looking in the future to play friendlies against other clubs in outlying counties. Workforce The Game is talking to local men and women who have a passion for sport, as well as their career, to find out how they juggle their lives to get the most out of both. Here we talk to Steven Carter, a Customer Care Consultant from Health-on-Line to find out his experiences. Steven Carter, joined Health-on-Line just over two months ago, but already has made an impression within the Customer Service department where he sits. Not only has his enthusiasm and commitment evident for this job, but Health-on-Line has also clearly made an impression on Steven, saying it is unlike any other job he has ever worked in. However, as The Game found out it is not just work that motivates Steven – but hockey. Yes, hockey. To some, hockey may just be a sport that you play at school, or spend time trying to get out of, but for Steven, and plenty others in the local area it requires the same, if not more, dedication and fitness requirements needed than other sports. Steven started playing hockey when he was aged 12 at school, and quickly became part of a lunchtime hockey club where he got talent-spotted by Poole Town club, the Dolphins. Steven has grown from strength to strength in the sport, and now plays for Blandford – a club in the Hampshire Division, League 1. They are currently striving to achieve promotion, in order to secure sponsorship, and therefore additional funding for the club.

If you think the pitch is small, and therefore fitness is not a necessity, think again. Steven does a fitness regime on average 10 times per week – and has a diet adapted around his sport. During the pre and summer season Steven trains on average 3 – 4 times a week in the evenings to prepare for the league from 7 – 10pm (which often involves going straight from work). However, he also does circuit training every morning before work, and on nights where hockey training isn’t on you will find him either running or cycling. When asked if this is a necessity or just something he enjoys Steven replies, “It is a bit of both – I do love sport, but training is definitely needed for Hockey. A game lasts 70 minutes, and the key to success is being fast at sprinting to ensure you win the ball – therefore you need to be at the peak of your game, half a metre can make all the difference”.

Steven’s passion for the game led him to apply for Health-on-Line after his previous employer stated he was not allowed any Saturdays off work to play in the league. Working in Customer Service at Health-on-Line, Steven recognises communication and teamwork are an essential part of his role when dealing with policy amendments, queries and administration – particularly during busy times. However, he attributes his teamwork characteristics to be as a result of playing hockey where the reward and benefits are evident from playing as part of a team. In contrast to his previous role, Stevens department focus on excelling in Customer Service rather than phone length targets – meaning Steven also is more refreshed and energised at Hockey. However, he admits on certain days after work, hockey can be a great stress buster!

Gary Willingham of SUPInflatables.co.uk and FC Watersports met us at Sandbanks beach along with SUP pro, Sam Ross, on a sunny but chilly October afternoon armed with wetsuits and the latest top-of-the-range boards to teach Dan how to SUP!

Hi Dan, welcome to your first ‘Have a Go’ challenge and thank you for becoming our new hero! How are you feeling about this new role and trying out the different activities we have planned for you? I’m grateful to The Game to give me this opportunity to get off my backside. When you get called a ‘couch potato’ by your wife it hurts real bad! I’m not really into exercise as I once twisted my ankle running for a bus, but I do admire sporty people and think there are some great local sports men and women each with a story to tell, so whatever activity you throw at me I will be concentrating on not injuring myself as well as make a few friends along the way. We’ve set you a challenge to try Stand Up Paddleboarding for your first one…have you ever done anything like this before? Nope, I’m not a natural sea lover. Like most people, I think it stems from watching ‘Jaws’ at an early age, even though I know this is an irrational fear in the waters off of the English Channel! I will still be trying my best to stay out of the water. What preparation have you done for this one? Unsurprisingly, nothing. I’m hoping whatever natural instincts of balance and coordination I have will fire up to ensure I stay dry…unless it rains of course! AFTER… Well done Dan! Good effort and you looked the part. What did you think?! That’s nice of you to say, the wetsuit was very slimming! Seriously though, I loved it and towards the end, I felt like I’d been

doing it for years even though I fell off just as we finished…a wave crept up behind me and took me to wipeout city! Was it hard to keep your balance on the board? To begin with it must have been like watching Bambi on ice, there were a couple of times I thought ‘I’m going to fall in’ but Sam, the instructor, taught me some great techniques to help me with my balance. You seemed to get up and get going pretty quickly, was it relatively easy to pick up and what was the hardest part? I was very apprehensive to begin with, but once I familiarised myself with the board and how to paddle, it was like riding a bike, I just went for it. Amazingly, it is fairly easy to pick up the basics in a short amount of time but I put that down to some great tuition rather than my natural ability. The hardest part was definitely turning, that was hard work on the arms and lower back, but I put that down to my inefficient technique for which Sam gave me some great pointers. What was the tuition like and did you feel confident out on the water? Sam was great, he walked me through each skill and technique and gave me lots of encouragement and after about 10 minutes my confidence on the board started to come through. As a first timer, stamina is a factor, you use a lot of core muscles in SUP so you do get tired quite quickly…I think I’ll start borrowing my wife’s swiss ball and smash out some sit ups. What would you recommend to people thinking about giving SUP a go? It’s a bit of a cliché but just give it a go, it’s a fun activity on our local waters where even as a novice, you can stay relatively dry. It’s a great workout for core strength and I imagine with a few mates would be a great laugh. Thanks again to Sam and Gary at SUPInflatables. Well done, Dan for completing your first challenge. Look forward to seeing you tackle the next!

Tom Keir. Possibly the worse drinker there is of all time, pretty much anyone is able to drink this man under the table. It has been know that even a can of shandybass has turned him over the edge and got him calling god on the big white porcelain telephone.

The Brains – who is the most intelligent? Tim “The Power” Flower He is constantly writing in his book of what to do next on the rugby field, he certainly is the Einstein of the group which to be fair isn’t that difficult. Known for his large forehead which houses unbelievably long words which confuses all at the rugby club and his wife because most of it makes no sense at all.

The Brawn – who is the player that makes the biggest hits? Jeandre “don’t mess with me” Tait. At the age of 16, he took up ballet. According to Tait, ballet “is an art, but it’s also one of the most difficult sports”. He started lifting weights to improve his stick like physique. Today on the pitch his mix of twinkle toed ballet and huge physique makes him unstoppable on the Dockers wing.

Worst Dress Sense – who needs to update their threads? Jason Summers. Jason has taken his dress sense from Alfie Moon off Eastenders which ironically is where the big fellow is from. Of course at 6ft 6 and 20 stone we aren’t going to necessarily going tell him he looks a numpty but happy to smile and nod when another outrageous shirt appears for an after match party. He really is a “diamond geezer”.

Biggest Bottle Job – who always ducks out of a tackle? Oli Hare. Even since having a mosquito bite him causing him to fall and break a nail at the Bournemouth 7’s, Oli “bucky” O’Hare now would rather run away from possible danger and not run the risk of hurting himself again.

Mr Vain – who absolutely rates themselves?

Pete “Twinkle Toes” Davies. If spare confidence could be bottled and sold, Peter would be a millionaire. But alas, this fella and his mate Ronald are stuck with more honest ways of earning...show him the outside and he will take it along with your dignity, grace and potentially your daughter.

Patricks Bar and Restaurant in Ashley Cross, is a great place to unwind after a hard game of rugby. With TV’s to watch sports and lovely bar staff it is a place we highly recommend.

Initiation – what is the best team initiation you’ve seen? Seeing as though every member of the squad will be making their debuts, at some stage everyone will be initiated together. Watch this space… it’s sure to include loads of beer, burpees, a deck of cards, nakedness and some Ghost Peppers (the world’s hottest chilli)!

PUMPING IRON (1977) When it comes to pumping something vigorously over and over again in the aim of swelling a body part, iron doesn’t quite take the no.1 spot for myself but then again I am not the mighty Arnold Schwarzenegger. In this classic documentary ‘Pumping Iron’, we follow Schwarzenegger in his last competing role for the 1975 Mr. Olympia contest after winning six years previously in a row with the intention of retiring those man bulges from competition to persue his acting career. It was shortly after this documentary was released, that Arnold’s fame outside of the body building circles really took off commercially. Seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger as a 20 something; young man in his prime, dedicated so whole heartedly to his sport that he could even block out his fathers death two months before a competition, so he could remain focussed on winning, shows a real insight into the mind of the real man behind the screen we know today. With charm and ease and an equally wicked sense of humour, Arnold plays mind games with his competitors and explains how getting pumped up for competition always reminds him of sex. That after a good hard session in the gym or a competition win, feels to him like he has had an orgasm. Maybe I need to get back down the gym, I hear you all concur. With various other body builders who are training for the event most interesting is Lou Ferrigno who later went onto play the Incredible Hulk in the 1970s TV series. We see him being trained by his father (A Robert De Niro lookalike) who pushes his son to the limit, not only to win but to beat their top idol Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ferrigno even shouts “Arnold! Arnold!”at the 11th and 12th push of a heavy load which really speaks both to his own desire to win and how strong a presence Schwarzenegger really was in bodybuilding at the time. Its clear to see Arnold as the Alpha male surrounded by excessively buff men bowing their heads or averting their eyes in the locker rooms at his playful banter but these mind games are all part of Schwarzeneggers charm and invariably what beat his opponents before they even get on the podium.

What I Thought... I’m no body builder, though we men have all playfully and secretly kissed our ‘guns’ in front of our women to impress and entertain behind closed bedroom doors. (Actually maybe not) However I don’t think you even need to be that interested in body building as a sport to find this documentary fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable. I lift this up for all to see and flex my meek muscle power in your general direction to encourage you to press that button on netflix and watch this rather good film. However, you might want to send the missus upstairs in case she sees your bedroom posturing really isn’t ‘all that’.

Howe: One year on The scene was set, the league leaders were in town and expectations were high. AFC Bournemouth may have been some 19 points behind and 20 places below their opponents Tranmere Rovers, but the home crowd could sense something special was about to happen. After all, Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall were back in the dug out after 18 months away with Burnley. They had only known success during their first spell in charge and it only seemed right that they started the second with a win. But this was more than just three points. It was the start of a new era and a defining moment in a season that ended with a promotion achieved against all the odds.

“It was the darkest time of my life,” says Howe. “I just wasn’t prepared for what happened. It was very sudden and I had no life experience in that way, I was very naive. You don’t always have yourself to think about, I’ve got three brothers and a sister and I felt the family was in a bad way. I had my wife and newly-born child to think about”. “But I was in a high-profile job. My mum died on the Saturday morning and I missed the game against Crystal Palace, but on Monday and Tuesday you are expected back at work. I found that very difficult when I was so far away from people who were very distressed. I went back to work, you just can’t take time off. Burnley needs you, the players need you and you are there to do your job.

It was also one dictated by personal circumstances as much as professional preferences following the sudden passing of Howe’s mother Annie in March 2012. She had been a huge influence on his career, taking him to and from training sessions and matches from the very start of his association with club as a player in the academy. In the end, the pressure of attempting to turn Burnley into a team capable of challenging for promotion back to the Premier League, coupled with concerns for his family at

The changes and improvements Howe has made to the side this season are noticeable and matched by the club’s business in the transfer market. Long gone are the days of giving chances to unproven players from the lower leagues, scouting and recruitment is now an operation which crosses continents. It’s a typically understated summary of the last year at the Goldsands Stadium from Howe and it doesn’t quite do justice to the scale of the achievement from the squad that won promotion to the Championship. But what’s not up for debate is that their decision to return to the south coast was undoubtedly brave and ultimately correct.

“Then came Crystal Palace, Charlton and Burnley all at the same time and that dragged on a bit. I felt if I turned down another one I would be labelled with a lack of ambition or being too comfortable. It was really because of other people that I took the job to prove that I could do it, picking the one that I believed was the most difficult and furthest away.” Fast forward two-and-a-half years and both Howe and the Cherries are back in the Championship and more than holding their own after an encouraging start to the season. It’s clear that this is a club that isn’t prepared to stand still and neither is its manager. The cautious optimism he speaks with in interviews is underlined by an unwavering determination and uncompromising high standards.

It’s an afternoon Howe can reflect on with positive memories approaching the anniversary of his and Tindall’s return, even if he didn’t feel the same way 12 months ago. “Coming back could have gone either way,” he says. “There’s always that fear it could go wrong although I didn’t really feel it until the first game, when I thought if we lose today they’ll be thinking what has he come back for? Thankfully we won and the rest has just fallen into place.”
