his opponents in his wake. But the greatest part of “the Ward effect” is his ability to come from the back and cut his way to the front, often helping his team partner in the process. Watching Ward execute those effortless moves is an art form in itself and at breakneck speed it usually defies belief! Ward will have plenty of support from his Pirates shipmates. Re-joining the side is the Polish duo of Maciej Janowski and Przemyslaw Pawlicki who both had a part to play in 2013. Janowski, affectionately known as “Magic”, finished last season with the greatest number of appearances in the skull and crossbones. His liking for the Wimborne Road circuit made sure that he was a prolific scorer of points on each occasion endearing him to the fans in double quick time. In contrast, Pawlicki made just five appearances before cruel luck stepped in to aggravate a painful leg injury leaving him on the injured list.
CHAMPIONS RETURN
PIRATES 2014
There is an air of optimism around Poole Stadium this month as the mighty Poole Pirates embark on a new speedway voyage that will see them defend their Elite League title of 2013. adversity and cruel luck, the Pirates triumphed in a remarkable comeback that saw them lift themselves from the very bottom of the table in May and go on to dominate the play-offs in October. It was the stuff of Hollywood and heroes.
DARCY WARD: CAPTAIN AND NO.1 AGAIN
The reigning champions take to the track for the summer and the familiar roar of those 500cc, brakeless, motor bikes will be heard once again around the town centre stadium on Wednesday nights. You can’t blame the management and fans for being optimistic. Last year, even through
This year, the Pirates name five of the squad that contributed to that memorable victory along with two newcomers to Dorset shale. It is, they believe, a recipe for success. There can be no doubt that in their number one and captain, Darcy Ward, the champions are tracking the most exciting talent in world speedway. Almost the youngest rider in the side at 20 years of age, he has taken centre stage and built a reputation second to none for thrilling moves that leave

Australian, Josh Grajczonek, also returns after being one of the most influential riders in that play-off victory. Josh came late to the 2013 squad and after a reshuffle he found himself in a reserve slot. His double figure scores, from the number six position, in the league final were undoubtedly a key factor in bringing home the silverware and earned the popular Aussie many nominations for Rider of the Year. He was a welcome signing when announced before Christmas. He will be joined by the final returning championship rider Kyle Newman who proudly pulls on the blue and white again after gaining a winners medal in the grand final in October. Kyle is especially proud to pull on the Pirates’ colours as he is Poole born and bred, a lifelong fan, and realising an ambition to race for his favourite team. It’s the Hollywood effect all over again! The team’s final places are filled by the latest riders to join the Poole dynasty, both very different in age and experience. Lee Smart is a seasoned British campaigner who joins Newman as one of the mandatory National League reserve riders this year and Vaclav Milik, from the Czech Republic, who will make his UK debut with the Pirates in 2014. Although the youngest in the side, Vaclav comes with the promise of great things, he is already the Czech Republic under 21 Champion and his arrival in the UK will be watched with interest. The air of expectancy around Wimborne Road will rise again this summer. Once more the Pirates have assembled a championship challenging side as Promoter Matt Ford never fails to inspire the belief in his riders. They will be grabbed by the “Pirate Pride” and so starts the script to another classic season of speed worthy of the greatest thrill writer in “Tinseltown”. It moves fast… so don’t miss it!
April at Bournemouth Rugby Club starts with the Youth and Mini tournament on the 5th and 6th with over 5000 people expected over the weekend, it will be very busy and the ideal opportunity for our young players to show the skills that they have developed over the last few months. Our Volunteers and coaches will be out in full force making sure that everyone has a great day and lots of good rugby is played. Why not pop along and see for yourself, bring the children and maybe they will want to come along for a trial session in the last few weeks of the season. Details of any summer training for age groups will be on the relevant age group pages and new players are always welcome to come along and try out.

O2 Touch is going from strength to strength at Bournemouth Rugby Football Club (BRFC). Touch Rugby appeals to sports enthusiasts or those looking for an alternative way of keeping fit. This fast, simple and exciting game promotes the fundamental skills of running, handling, evasion and support play, while developing the basic principles of attack and defence, without the fear of contact. In England, Touch Rugby has grown rapidly and is now played by more than 15,000 men and women. Simon Annicchiarico, the BRFC Touch Operator, said: “We would like local people to tell as many friends, work colleagues and family as possible about Touch Rugby at BRFC, so that

we can build on our success. Sessions are held on Thursday nights from 7.00pm to 8:30pm at BRFC, Bournemouth Sports Club, Chapel Gate. Please email simon@bournemouth-rugby.co.uk for more details or just turn up on the night and give it a try. The First XV continue to have some mixed fortunes with a couple of wins over the last month and a couple of losses. The last 2 home games of the season are Saturday 12th April when we see Chinnor and Saturday 19th when Ampthill come for a rearranged match. The Second XV have been bolstered over the last few weeks with some of our colts stepping up to play and continuing with the internal development program within the club. These games give valuable experience to our young players and introduce them to the adult game. The Third XV have had a great season and before their final game on Saturday 29th March were sitting in second place in their league looking for promotion to the Dorset and Wilts South 3 league for next season. The whole club will be having their AGM and senior awards dinner in May and further details will be available on our website within the next few weeks. ARTICLE: JULIE BODDINGTON

Have a think - how many people do you know who never seem to go longer than a short period of time a couple of weeks maybe without seemingly picking up a sniffle, high fever or full blown cold? This person might even be yourself, if it is are you often referred to as being just ‘unlucky’ in picking up illnesses? If the above criteria sounds familiar in either context, then the truth is it’s not just bad luck which is leading to these ailments consistently rearing their head. Interestingly though, medical research shows that acquiring colds is not directly linked to a weak immune system; instead they are purely infections which can’t be fought off when contracted through the eyes, nose and mouth. However, the strength of the immune system is vitally important in the subsequent recovery phase from any condition or illness. Here is an annotated question (below) from a recent conversation that took place with a client: “Despite feeling better after a few days it always seems to take me weeks sometimes to fully recover from a small illness, is my immune system weak and if so how do improve this, just get more sleep and eat more green vegetables?”
FOR MOST THE RECOMMENDED INTAKE OF 5 FRUIT AND VEGETABLES PER DAY IS ACTUALLY TOO LOW. DEPENDING ON YOUR RECOMMENDED CALORIE INTAKE THE AVERAGE PERSON SHOULD TAKE ON BOARD BETWEEN 5 TO 13 SERVINGS PER DAY WHICH EQUATES TO 2.5 TO 6.5 CUPS. IN EXAMPLE A PERSON WHO NEEDS 2,000 CALORIES PER DAY TO MAINTAIN HEALTH AND WEIGHT WOULD NEED 9 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES (2 CUPS OF FRUIT AND 2.5 CUPS OF VEGETABLES). 08
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Before telling you my response, I appreciate that a discussion about colds, immune systems and green vegetables is not the most stimulating read for some. Conscious of this, I want to set the background as to why I passionately believe in the importance of discussing good nutrition for good health. A poor diet will often result in autoimmune disease; a condition which breaks down the protective cells which either fight off small levels of germs and other foreign intruders or produces their own antibodies which attack the body’s tissues. 1 in 12 of us is affected by this condition at any one time. OK, so not the most headline grabbing statistic I know; but now consider this a different way over 4.2 million people in the UK suffer with a ‘major’ autoimmune disease condition. The list includes the following. • Rheumatoid arthritis • Systemic lupus erythematosus (Lupus) • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) • Multiple sclerosis (MS • Type 1 diabetes • Guillain-Barre syndrome • Celiac disease • Addison or Graves disease • And many more…
Why is the discussion about autoimmune disease important then? Well, the answer takes me back to the previous question from my client about immune system weakness. Despite not being conclusively proved, there is enough evidence as any immunologist will tell you that immune system dysfunction is heavily linked to poor diet choices, a lack of exercise, low amounts of sleep and bad lifestyle choices i.e. drugs and excessive alcohol. This is important to understand, as many health issues and linked immune system worries can affect up to 80% of people worldwide and, could be largely solved through the right nutritional choices and the adequate intake of vitamins and minerals. As you might be able to guess then from the above statistics, a deficiency in micronutrients (vitamins/minerals) is a widespread problem, with the consequent illnesses resulting from poor nutrition. This is fast becoming a global epidemic and an economic burden to most health services across the entire developing world. For example, just some of the health conditions linked purely to micronutrient deficiency include the following: • Reduced growth and development • Lowered physical and mental capacity • Immune system weakness (as mentioned) • Overall reproductive performance • Even mortality Hopefully at this point of this article, understanding the relationship between autoimmune disease and poor diet choices is becoming clearer. The great difficulty however is knowing how much or how little of each vitamin or mineral you need to actually consume to maintain optimal health. To address any such queries the remainder of this article will outline the specific role of micronutrients (Vitamins/ Minerals) and the recommended guidelines for their intake.
VITAMINS Vitamins are organic compounds containing carbon which are synthesised by plants. They can be obtained in the diet from eating the appropriate plants, or by eating animal products which derive their vitamin content from plants, little confusing I know. Vitamins are divided into two groups as shown below. Fat Soluble Vitamins The four vitamins A, D, E and K are described as being ‘fat soluble’, this is because they can only be absorbed, transported and utilised in the presence of fat. In protecting the cell membranes inside the liver and fat tissues, they enable our cells to breathe and receive the nutrients necessary to maintain health and normal function. Vitamin

Conclusion From reading this article, I very much hope that you now have a better understanding about vitamins, minerals and the important links they have with our immune systems and health. It is worth remembering though that just eating more green leaves and fish will not entirely keep the colds and flu away. Here are some final nutrition and lifestyle tips to boost your health further. • To avoid malnutrition eat regularly throughout the day (every 2-3 hours) with your food plate consisting off 50% carbohydrates, 25% protein , 19% vitamins and minerals and 6% from fats. • Aim for 5-13 pieces of varied fruit and vegetables each day (different colours preferably); aim to always buy organic produce where possible. • Aim to drink 10 glasses (2-3 litres) of clean water a day, consume more in hot conditions and after exercise typically an extra 1-2 litres. Limit stimulants and fizzy drinks to no more than 1 or 2 a day. • Try to complete a minimum of 2.5 hours of pulse raising exercise/physical activity each week; this could be broken down into 30 minutes 5 times a week. • Do not underestimate the importance of sleep, regularly getting 7-8 hours will make a significant difference to your overall health, vitality and well-being. • Cut down your stress levels; make time to maintain relationships with your friends and loved ones. It is always good to have someone to unload on, in addition set yourself goals at work and in life and most importantly where you can, try and have fun every day.

When you start getting more advanced and dedicated and have decided whether you want to advance into downhill or freeride, you may want to invest in getting a full face helmet for when you’re going that much faster. There are lots more Longboard specific helmets coming out now but they carry a pretty heavy price tag. A downhill MTB helmet will do just fine and they start around £50.
accessories
gloves
helmet
First of all, get yourself a certified helmet, even if you’re just going to be ‘poodling’ about the promenade. If you’re just starting and if you’re anything like me, you will spend a lot of time falling over. Half lids, are the best option for all round skating, various brands include: TSG, Bern, Triple 8 are just some.
Slide Gloves are important when you want to start sliding; a little bit more advanced skill is needed for this, but it is a lot of fun once conquered. You can make your own, by getting some thick gardening/building gloves, cutting up some acrylic chopping board and glueing them to the palms, but proper gloves will last longer and are specifically made. They range from about £25-£55.
I also carry a lot of other little bits - Go pro and camera, spare batteries, Jimmy’s Iced Coffee, Jamboo Headphones, Mp3 player, biscuits, duck tape, other wheels, hardware this all comes with experience and depends on what you’re doing for the day.
board
This is pretty important, there are literally thousands of boards to choose from, so what does one buy? Find something you think that looks cool otherwise you will get bored and stop riding it. If you’re planning to use a longboard to get to class, to work, or to the shopping mall, odds are you’re going to be weaving in and out of some foot traffic. In this case, you’ll want a smaller longboard
trucks
Now that you’ve selected your longboard deck, it’s time to select your trucks. The truck selection on a longboard skateboard is especially important since it’s the trucks that will allow you to turn as well as keep your wheels properly anchored to your board. There are many considerations for the trucks for your longboard. Luckily for someone who is just getting involved with longboarding, the choices
can be made very simply. The best (and easiest) way to select trucks for your cruising longboard skateboard is to choose trucks that are closest to the width of the deck as this will allow for proper selection of wheel choices and a consistent ride wherever it is you’re headed.
wheels
“Dude, I want Fluro pink wheels!” When it comes to choosing the correct wheel for a longboard, colour is not the important factor in determining how well the board will ride. (Believe it or not, colour-coordinating a longboard doesn’t always give you the best setup.) The size of the wheel (diameter) and the wheel’s hardness (durometer) are the two main factors in choosing the proper wheels

Ricky Laker Kitesurfing King of Watersports rider
What’s your favourite surf report to check for the Thanks for talking to us, Ricky...what got you into best weather? kitesurfing and how long have you been doing it? WindGuru.cz – My biggest internet addiction (really). Well, in 1997 a good friend bought a Flexifoil stacker kite and stack we did. On one particular day we stacked Have you managed to get out much with the recent 72ft of kite! We then progressed to more powerful (Dec-Feb storms) extreme weather? kites on land. Landboards, roller boots, skateboards, Yep sure did, epic times. 60mph is about the limit fisherman trousers when raining for a spot of ‘grarse’ on my kites though. Some days it was hitting 80mowing, face plants and near death to then girlfriends 90mph with no beach and the sea up over the prom were the general order of any windy day. It was only so unfortunately this meant a few sessions watching. a matter of time before we would hit the water. In Great to watch though, we’re normally on the other 1999 we spotted kite surf kites online; in 2000 I bought side being part of it. If felt very strange to be watching a rig and got going. It has been 14 amazing years of and not be out there to be honest, a rarity indeed. Kitesurfing and looking forward to 14 more at the very least. Have you competed in any competitions and is there anything you’re training for now? Nope. Not really my cup of tea, too much down time. Nature is the only real competitor anyway; I want to go one way; the elements try to rip me apart the other way. It’s a battle I’ll never win but I’ll always be back for more of the fight! Till death do us part! I’m always doing something so I guess I’m always training. What’s your best or favourite trick? Difficult question. It depends on the conditions and the style of riding at the time but anything done as hard as one can, deserves respect. We all love a big fail, a big win even more. I certainly love big airs with big travelling rotations. Big 14s, bigger 18s (1440 deg, 1800deg). A good old ‘double backloop double kiteloop’ always makes me smile. Hope to make that a ‘triple triple’ this year.
How difficult is kitesurfing for someone who may have never tried it? Er, well, so glad you asked...If you have previous experience with any other type of board sport then this will help a lot. For most, start with a small power kite on land and get used to controlling the kite and then get a lesson on the water. Please get lessons on the water, big kites can kill and have! Be safe and have uber amounts of respect for the wind! If you want it, get out there and do it. If you want it enough you’ll be riding in no time.
Where is a good place for people who may be thinking about giving it a go this summer? If you are local or fancy a visit to Poole then there are lots of Kite Schools in the area. Poole Harbour is a great spot to learn so go on, get out there! (quote?) WARNING: Kitesurfing is very addictive! Relationships might (will probably) break down! Your work may (will probably) be affected! You will (without a doubt) ache more than you ever have before - I’m not joking!
Do you take part in any other water sports or land based sports? What’s your favourite kitesurfing hot spot in the I sure do – got to keep the madness away whilst there’s surrounding area? no wind. Hi Jane, thanks for talking to us. Tell us about your sport and what got you into it… I really started sailing just by chance. My parents were working in Poole in Dorset and I used to watch the little sailing boats in the harbour from our living room window. I must have asked whether I could have a go because Mum and Dad paid for a 1 week sailing course for my 11th Birthday. I loved it so much that they paid for a second week and at the end of that week the sailing school gave me a third week for free as they said that I was doing so well! After we moved back to London though, I found it hard to find somewhere to continue my courses. In the end, we found Queen Mary Sailing Club in Staines which was a reservoir and not at all like sailing in Poole Harbour. It was a sort of love/hate relationship with dinghy sailing that I had here and where I discovered keelboats and more importantly, racing! Can you talk us through your racing experiences and any big wins that stand out for you? Although I had gained some experience at QMSC within the J24 fleet, my ‘proper’ racing came at University when I joined the British Youth Sailing Team and raced an Open 30. Looking back, we were unbelievably fortunate to have something so high tech to play with and we competed in a lot of the RORC events in the Solent. Although I earned a place on Tracy Edward’s team for the round the world record attempt, for me this never came to fruition and eventually life got in the way, boyfriend, student debts etc. It wasn’t until almost 11 years later that I dusted off my foul weather gear and got back out on the water. Within a year, I was part of a Commodores Cup campaign and racing with friends on their Hunter 707. We did really well and went on to eventually winning the Sportsboat class at Cowes Week. A small personal highlight for me was winning the Ladies Race at the Dayboat Nationals. I am not strong helm and I hadn’t sailed one before that week so for me, it was a triumph! Where do you train? I prefer to race in the Solent as I know it so well and because the fleet is so competitive. As I am fast approaching the big four-oh, I

prefer not to get wet either! It’s funny but I have noticed a lot of my old team mates have sold up their boats, preferring a warm duvet on a Sunday morning to getting togged up and out in the rain and cold! As I am now living in the West Country, this makes getting to the Solent every Sunday morning fairly problematic and as most of my old crew have sold their big boat, I am now back to networking on crew websites to try and find a ride for this season. Do you tend to stick to sailing yachts or do you enjoy motor or speed boats too? Absolutely not! Haha. Seriously, I think there is definitely a divide between sailing yacht crews and motor boat enthusiasts! I would fancy a small RIB or something that I can take down to the beach and swim or dive from, but I get very little pleasure from being on a motor yacht. There is nothing to do! They are smelly and fumey and they guzzle gas like there’s no tomorrow. They are noisy and uncomfortable! You get the idea. From a work perspective though I prefer working as a steward on motor boats as they aren’t on their side 75% of the time and it makes your job a lot easier! You took your Yachtmaster exams last year and are now qualified to work on superyachts. What was that process like and can you tell us about any work you’ve done since qualifying? Getting qualified for going to work overseas was a serious investment! The Yachtmaster Course wasn’t really entirely necessary but I wanted to know that I was up to the job. That part was more about my self belief/ self confidence. I chose to do my course in Falmouth as I had never been there before and I wouldn’t be able to rely on my local knowledge. It was really challenging and we had severe gales during our prep week and the exam almost didn’t happen due to it gusting 62kts on the day! The instructor was terrifying and I have never felt so nervous. By the end of the assessment, I was exhausted! After landing in Palma, I managed to find work pretty quickly but this was due to networking and was more about ‘Who you know’ than the crew agencies. Getting your first season is a challenge and you have to be prepared to do the rotten jobs. In some cases I was more qualified than the Captains of boats which I was applying to and this meant that I didn’t get the job. What is it about being on the sea that you love and describe how it feels when you’re out sailing? This is a really tough question to answer. I laughed out loud as I read the question to my mum and said it was definitely the bacon sandwiches on the way to the start line, the packed lunch mid-race and the rum and cokes in the bar afterwards!
Last summer, while working in the Med it was hard work but there were times which will stick in my mind. En route to Turkey, we passed Stromboli which sent up a big puff of volcanic smoke in to the air and cruising down the East coast of Italy at night and seeing the biggest shooting star with a tail that streaked bright orange through the sky. Anchoring in Greece and Croatia in water that was as clear as Gin and then diving down to look at giant red starfish before sitting on deck with a cold beer and watching the sun disappear below the horizon. It’s that ‘Swallows and Amazons’ feeling of adventure with your best mates, where you feel like you are the only people left in the world. Everything outside of the guardrails of the boat disappears and it’s just about working together to get a job done well. What kind of fitness do you do to keep up with the physical demands of sailing? In the past I don’t think any of us have really trained properly for sailing. For myself, It has been a mixture of running and some gym training. But at the moment I am really in to CrossFit and I have a nutrition plan to help me get strong and fit for this season. Do you take part in any other land based or water sports? Yes, I have been heavily involved in Triathlon and entered the Ironman 70.3 in North Devon twice now. I also scuba dive and I’m planning to focus on that this summer if I can’t find a new crew. What would you say to women wanting to get into sailing and where is a good place to find out more? I would say that it is like Marmite, you’re either going to love it or hate it! So don’t go mad buying lots of kit or buying a boat until you know whether you are going to like it! There are some great sailing schools where you can go and do a basic course. You could also join your local sailing club and volunteer as weekend crew. If you are a real beginner then you might find someone sweet who will show you the ropes. The Royal Yachting Association has a really informative website and the London and Southampton boat shows are also great places to find all the main clubs and contacts in one venue. If, like me, on your very first day on the water you end up a shade of blue/ purple and soaked to the skin, don’t give up - it gets better!

WITH JASON CUNNINGHAM
Rugby is most definitely at the forefront of people’s minds with the fantastic excitement of the recent 6 Nations tournament. Closer to home, we see the UK’s first multi-purpose Coastal Activity Park launch this month and we caught up with Jason Cunningham, Beach Touch Facilitator at Oakmeadians RFC O2 Touch to find out how the team are getting involved with this exciting new concept which will provide activities for all ages and levels of fitness.
PHOTOGRAPHY: SIMON MUNCER
Oakmeadians Touch down on the beach
Following the Oaks success of 2013 which included winning the Bournemouth 7s Festival Touch tournament last May, launching the Beach Touch rugby team and becoming Dorset’s first RFU & O2 Touch base, the Oaks are back with Beach Touch 2014 from May 21st and continuing over the warmer months this summer. The Touch team are looking forward to being involved with the new Coastal Activity Park by offering this fun and fast paced sport to men, women and a special one day tag event mid June for local school children from years 5 and 6 (contact Neil Bibby for more information 07725 593646). With the launch happening in association with the opening of the new Park, Jason commented, “Everyone involved had so much fun last year that we wanted to make it even better for 2014 and encourage the community to try Touch, which is rugby without the physicality and full contact. It’s great to be involved with the launch on the 13th April; the park is the first of its kind in Europe. We’re incredibly lucky to live in Bournemouth and with the coast having so many opportunities for people to try new sports and activities, we’re proud to be able to provide Beach Touch as part of the Park’s offering.”
The Oakmeadians Touch team are inviting local businesses, organisations, colleges, clubs to enter a novice team of 10 players for £100 for 6 weeks of fun, coaching, games and a few beers/refreshments afterwards, creating a great team bonding experience on the beach. This will take place from May 21st and run every Wednesday early evening 7pm at Boscombe Sea front. As well as the beach Oaks touch will also be running regular open ‘pay & play’ O2 Touch sessions on Monday evenings in Meyrick Park and regular Saturday Touch Challenges from April to September with Bournemouth’s first O2 Touch leagues starting later in April and again in July/August. The Coastal Park will develop in a series of stages, but will offer a range of new leisure opportunities for both residents and visitors to Boscombe beach. The Zone starts at Toft Steps extending eastwards beyond Boscombe Pier, and will feature a continuous choice of activities as well as a multi-use sports area and national events site.
18
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
The Park will be operated by a team in Bournemouth Borough Council’s Seafront Operations department, and overseen by the National Coastal Tourism Academy. “The new Park will provide a fantastic new attraction for Boscombe visitors and residents with something for everyone,” says David Collier, Coastal Activity Park manager. “Boscombe has become increasingly popular with active beach-goers, by adding new facilities we hope they will be able to try new sports and enjoy exercising even more on one of the most beautiful stretches of UK coastline. A 16-unit outdoor gym trail will run the length of the Park comprising 16 ‘gym buddies’ designed to give a full-body work-out, joggers will be rewarded with a marked running trail, walkers with a guided walking trail. Submerged rock pools will hug the beach groynes to provide a life-line for marine creatures, providing a unique opportunity for close observation.
“THERE’S PLENTY OF ACTION FOR FAMILIES WITH DIFFERENT CLIMBING OPTIONS, TABLE-TENNIS, SLACKLINING AND OF COURSE A HOST OF WATER SPORTS. FOR THE FIRST TIME, SWIMMERS WILL BE ABLE TO SNORKEL THE REEF AND GET UP-CLOSEAND-PERSONAL WITH THE MARINE LIFE NOW POPULATING IT.” For water sports fans, Bournemouth Surf School and Sorted Surf School will provide stand-up paddle-boarding, surfing, bodyboarding and kayaking in water sports zones east and west of Boscombe Pier. A dedicated zone will be also be marked out for kite- and wind-surfers positioned at the start of the park. In addition to the four accessible beach huts, hand cycling and basketball will be offered for visitors with disabilities in Chine Gardens. Special beach-friendly wheelchairs are also available from the seafront offices. To find out more about getting involved with the Oakmeadians Beach Touch team, contact Jason: 07771 888100 or visit: www.oakmeadians-rfc.com For more information about the Coastal Activity Park: coastalactivitypark@bournemouth.gov.uk

MATCH DAY NUTRITION
WITH EXERFORMANCE
With the fantastic 6 Nations tournament fresh in our memories, rugby has been a hot topic of late. The game is forever growing with more people playing, and players getting bigger, faster and more agile. Speed, Power, Strength, Agility, Flexibility, Skill, Contact - you name it, rugby uses it - and your performance is greatly enhanced by incorporating good nutrition pre and during the season, AND eating strategically on match day too. This information is not meant to act as a step-by-step instruction manual. Rather take from it what is going to be most beneficial for your performance. Play around with different combinations of foods that you enjoy and feel good after eating before a match – why not try these out before your pre-season training sessions and see how you go. Make a note of what works and what doesn’t!
Struggle to eat pre match?
Pre-match eating strategies IMPORTANT: • Aim to eat your last pre-match meal around 4 hours prior to kick off time
If this is you - use liquid sources - make yourself a smoothie - Include some whey protein, easy mix oats for carbohydrate and tropical fruit – banana and/or mango is a great option as they blend well. If you want also eat a protein recovery bar. These are typically not full of sugar and will provide a range of nutrients to maintain your body’s balance pre-match.
PROTEIN Your overall protein intake can be reduced which will allow your body more room for carbohydrate and glycogen storage (this is where we get our energy from). Minimise fat intake from protein sources, choosing lean meats such as turkey or chicken, fish such as tuna, eggs and protein powder IDEAL BREAKFAST IDEA: Porridge made with water and any type of berries IDEAL LUNCH IDEA: sweet potato or rice with chicken or turkey and broccoli
• If there are only a couple of hours till kick off there may not be time for a meal, so eat foods based on the following guidelines to banish any pangs of hunger. Make sure the food is energy rich and will not elevate insulin levels (ie avoid the high GI foods that raise your blood sugar too high)
Hungry pre match? Here are some guidelines CARBOHYDRATES Choose Low GI foods for slow release energy, and low fibre to reduce any feelings of bloatedness. For example choose rye bread, jacket potatoes or rice and tropical fruit such as bananas.
You need to aim to eat more carbohydrate than protein. It’s the carbs that will give you energy through the match!
• Incorporate a mix of carbohydrate, protein and fat in your meal(s)
Avoid high GI foods since you want steady energy release leading up to the match. Examples of High GI foods are : jaffa cakes, sweets, lollies and energy drinks.
HYDRATION Being well hydrated is absolutely key whether you are hungry or not! Keep well hydrated with water, dilute fruit juice and herbal teas. Stick to electrolyte drinks containing sodium and avoid drinks with high sugar content.
• Eat when you feel ready to eat, don’t feel under pressure to wake up at a set time to eat a meal as you are preparing for a competition and you should try and relax.
FATS Only take on board essential fats and minimize saturated fat unless it’s in the form IMPORTANT: Only start drinking energy drinks of coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil. Avoid when you start your warm up, not before. animal fats such as milk and butter,
Post Match/Tournament eating strategies Make sure you focus on recovery and re-hydrate, use protein/meal replacements and ensure you consume 1.5litres liquid per kilo of body weight lost. It is important to consume High GI foods and replenish glycogen stores to optimise your recovery. Baguettes with chicken/tuna, jellybean sweets and/or tropical fruit and/or protein bars are good examples of the type of food you could have on hand for immediate post match recovery. Then depending on the intensity of competition you should consume twice your body mass in grams of carbohydrate every two hours for recovery (e.g. an 80kg individual should consume 160g Carbohydrate every two hours). We’re speaking to local children and young people involved in different activities across the area to find out their motivation and ambition about taking part in the sports and activities they love in our ‘One to watch’ feature.
Hi Ryan, how and when did you first get into Taekwondo? I first got into Taekwondo when I was 7 yrs old. My friend had a ‘bring a friend day’ at his school so I went along and loved it from the very first day. I’ve now been training for longer than not training! What is it about Taekwondo that makes it your chosen sport? I like the physical side of Sport Taekwondo - pushing myself as hard as I can; it has made me who I am today. Do you take part in any other sports? I play all sports at school, but outside, my passion is Taekwondo and takes up all my time.
Name Age Sport
Ryan Simpson 14 Taekwondo WTF
Ryan lives in Upton with his mum, dad, older sister and two dogs. He is in year 9 at Lytchett Minster School. He trains with his club three times a week and also does fitness training at home.
Congratulations on gaining your black belt, how hard was it to achieve that level? I have earned a black belt in both ITF and now WTF Taekwondo. It took me 5 years to achieve my first black belt and it was a very proud day when it was presented to me. It took a lot of hard work and is earned over time. Students start as a white belt and then grade through coloured belts until they reach a level where their Instructor invites them to take their Dan (black belt) grading. Tell us about any wins or competitions you’ve had? I have competed from the age of 8. I think the earlier you start competing, the better. You get to make lots of friends. I have over 60 medals and trophies now, I have won the English and British titles in ITF Taekwondo and last September, I managed to win the WTF British title after moving over to Sport Taekwondo (Olympic). The competition was held in Manchester. It was awesome standing on the podium receiving my gold medal! Do you aim to compete in the Olympic Games one day? Everyone should have a goal. Mine, with a lot of hard work, is to hopefully represent our nation at the 2020 Games. I know it will be hard, but you have to set your goals high and I am focused on the work I need to do. What are you training for now? I’m training hard to improve my technique and hopefully increase my chances of being selected for the GB Junior Team. Talk us through your training regime and how often you train… I train with my coaches Marcin and Kate, who were on the Polish national and Olympic teams. I train at Carter Community School in Hamworthy on a Monday evening and then Tuesday and Friday at the YMCA, Westover Road in Bournemouth. We do drills, circuit training, dynamic stretching, plyometrics, sparring, speed work and resistance training. The training is different at every lesson, but I always leave sweating! …and how do you balance it with your school work? I always try to complete my homework the day it is set and I also leave one day of the weekend to finish any other homework that is needed to be completed. I do it this way because I like to be organised and I like to get the homework out of the way so I can focus on my Taekwondo lessons without having any other distractions. What would you recommend to other young people reading this who may want to try Taekwondo? Give it a go! I would encourage anyone to try Taekwondo. Without Taekwondo being a hobby of mine, I would probably not concentrate on my schoolwork as much; because it keeps me focused. This is not a sport like football where what you do benefits your team, this sport is about setting a goal and achieving it on your own. Finally, what are your hopes and goals for the near future? To keep training hard and hopefully get a sponsor so that I can do International competitions to gain WTF ranking points. From there, I can have a better chance of being part of the GB Taekwondo Team so I can represent my country in the worlds or even the Olympics!

Hi guys, thanks for talking to us…are you looking forward to the new season and defending the Elite League title? Magic (M): Of course, we have a young, really good team who has a lot of great experience. We can win with the best team and we’ll be trying hard all the way through. Shamek (S): Yes, I am very happy to be back here with the Pirates. It is a young team but we have some great riders racing this year. How different do you think this season will be to the last? M: We have prepared everything again like we did for the last season but you never know what will happen…every race is different, every meeting is different. We try to prepare the best we can to have a good set up for the home track. We’re excited that you’re both riding for the Pirates, what were your reasons behind your decisions to ride for Poole? M: It’s an awesome track here and the people are great. We all feel good here. There are some good places to go out when we’re not racing. S: Magic was here first and we spoke about the team together. Magic said how good the team was and how good the set up is here. Matt called me about joining the team but I had broken my leg. We talked about me coming back for this season. Bournemouth is very close by and it’s good for going out and chilling. Maciej, you personally had a cracking season for the Pirates last year, what are your goals for this year? M: We obviously won last year and definitely don’t want to lose this year. We only look at winning and don’t think about getting second position and losing at meetings. We want to do everything the best we can and show the fans how hard we try. Shamek, you had a brief spell here year with some really impressive rides, especially at Wimborne Road where you returned double figures in every home match, can the Pirates fans expect more of the same from you this year? S: I think so, I wasn’t 100% last year with my leg problems so this season I feel much better and I will be getting more good points. I feel good and ready to go! I want to get more great points for Poole. I’m very happy to be back at Poole. After one of the meetings last season, Matt told me to get home to get the injuries to my leg sorted. I had three operations over the winter and I’m now back on track. My leg is so much better with no pain and I think everything this season will be so much better.
As the 2013 Elite League Champions get set and re-organised, we speak exclusively to Maciej ‘Magic’ Janowski and Przemyslaw ‘Shamek’ Pawlicki about the build up to another season of exciting action at Wimborne Road. They share their thoughts and goals about the impending 2014 title defence with the mighty Poole Pirates.
This forthcoming season has seen some interesting rule changes, who do you think are your main contenders this year? M: We must be focussed 100% for every race. We can look at another team and think they are not so good but we need to be ready for everything. It doesn’t matter if we’re the champions - when it comes to each race, we need to do our best and make a good start.

Wimborne Road has always been a tough place for opponents to race at, why do you think this is? M: I think mainly because we race here a lot and every rider in our team feels very confident here. The track is great, there’s a good set up with the team and we’re all hoping for another successful season. Where is your favourite race track? S: I don’t have a favourite track…I just want to race everywhere that is good. I prefer a short track but in Poland, the tracks are very long. M: I have a couple of tracks that I like to race at but they are all different, some longer, some shorter but we prepare for all lengths so it’s no big deal.
“I LIKE THE FANS IN POOLE, THEY SUPPORT US VERY MUCH. WHEN WE RIDE AWAY, THEY COME AND GIVE US THE BOOST WE NEED. THEY KEEP US GOING”
You have a lot of varied travel around the world and Europe, how do you cope with that? M: The hardest part is at the beginning, after the holidays. We practise a lot but we don’t wake up like we did yesterday at 4am! So, when you start doing this again and getting back into the routine, it becomes easier and your body get used to it. We sleep a lot, wherever we can; in the car, on the plane, everywhere. In between racing, we rest as much as we can. S: Everyone you race has the same problem and we all travel a lot. If we have 30 minutes free, we have a sleep. Do you play any other sports outside of Speedway and is there anything you’re not allowed to do? M: We do a lot of things - wakeboarding, go karts, snowboarding. We’re never in one place so we do sports in the areas we travel to. S: Magic and I live very close to each other in Poland so we go to lots of different places together like Motocross and Kiteboarding. When you’re not racing, what do you like to do? S: When we have a few days free we like to go and chill out at home. In the summertime, we sometimes get a couple of days off or a bit longer so will do some watersports or go to the Motocross. We just think about what we want to do with our spare time and do it. Sum up the Pirates fans… M: I like the fans in Poole, they support us very much. When we ride away, they come and give us the boost we need and they never say anything bad after meetings. They keep us going. What’s your favourite place locally to… Eat? M: It depends on what time we finish. Sometimes we only had time to stop at Subway and grab something to eat but I love Chinese and Thai food or Frankie & Bennies. Play? M: I was racing here last year but I didn’t have a chance to go to some clubs, but ask me tomorrow as we’re off out tonight! Chill? S: I like shopping or eating out in the local restaurants. Finally, what are the ultimate goals for the 2014 Pirates race team? M: After last year we only want one thing…to win the league and keep the trophy! S: Yes, it has to be the same as last year - to win and have no big crashes. We will fight to keep the title. Thank you for talking to us and we wish you and the whole team and crew a successful season to retain the title. 28

WE’VE PICKED A SPORTS RELATED FILM FOR OUR LOCAL FILM EXPERT TO VIEW AND CRITIQUE. DAN MCRAE HAS WORKED AS A VISUAL EFFECTS ARTIST ON BLOCKBUSTERS INCLUDING STAR WARS AND THE DARK KNIGHT AND WE’VE SET HIM UP WITH ANOTHER GREAT FILM TO REVIEW WITH A BEER AND POPCORN. WIN WIN 2011
A flailing attorney and part time wrestling coach seizes on a loophole in the legal system. In a bid to keep his practice from folding, Mike Flaherty played by one of the best understated actors of our generation - Paul Giamatti, undertakes the role of legal guardian of Leo Poplar (Burt Young aka Paulie from the Rocky Films) who is an elderly client with dementia. After putting Leo in a home and effectively financing Flaherty’s Law firm with very little effort to keep him from going bust. Everyone is a winner, right? That is until the missing family of Leo start turning up. On a routine check of Leo’s house, Flaherty discovers Leo’s grandson sat on the steps after running away from home and drug addict/ alcoholic mother (Leo’s daughter). With no alternative but to live with his now senile granddad who he finds out is now living in a home, Flaherty now has to patch up this hole in his brilliant plan! He sees no other option than to bring the boy home and house him until his mother gets out of rehab. With his family and work life in jeopardy, Flaherty can only continue and he returns to coaching his young and not very experienced team of wrestlers. It turns out that the temporarily adopted grandson, Kyle Timmons played by
Alex Shaffer, is the only wrestling champion in his home town! Now with a new lease of life and passion to get Kyle on the team and into competitions, life seems to be settling into a comfortable groove and the boy begins to shine, makes new friends at home and at school. Everything is going well until his mother is released from rehab and turns up demanding ownership of her father in a bid to get the carers finances but without any real thought for her father or her son. Flaherty quickly realises that he’ll have to get creative in order to find a way out of his current predicament and do the right thing for the boy and his granddad.
WHAT I THOUGHT This film is exceptionally acted, a true character film with naturalistic screen presence and dry witted comedy. A social drama with heart and passion, getting the balance just right when it comes to work, family and play. It really is a Win Win of a film.

Dockers break British score record
After a wash out few months of waterlogged pitches, local new rugby team, the Dorset Dockers smashed the British club record with an incredible 212-0 win against tough team, the Dorchester Seconds a few weeks ago. Having launched in September 2013, club founders, James Osborne, Jerry Cook and Oli Hare were both shocked and amazed at the huge win which included 16 players who continued to rack up the points throughout the game. It was the first time since before Christmas that the conditions were perfect for the game and with the team itching to get out on the pitch and play under coach, Tim Flower who has propelled the fresh team to a great standard of play. At half time and at 92 points up, Tim told the team that this was a chance in a lifetime to set a new record. The Dockers scored 32 tries during the 80 minutes shared between 16 players, listed here: Dan Mallard x 4, James Flynn, Oli Hare, Luke Burrage, Tom Lyth x2, Tom Kier x2 tries and 26 cons, Alex Priest x 3, Dave Budd x2, Joey Barton x2, Jamie Mitchell, James Oxley, Joe Day, Donald Wharton x3, Pete Davies x2 , James Osborne x 3, Michael Notarbtolo x 3

Jeremy Cook, club chairman commented, “My reaction was disbelief and amazement; it was a great day and hope it will carry on for the remainder of the season. I had no intimation this could happen. Mission No. 18 Training session with the Bournemouth Bobcats Dan did well trying out Parkour for the very first time last month. Being a physically demanding activity, he certainly felt it for a good few days afterwards! This month, we’re throwing him into another taxing sport, American Football. On a cool spring morning in March, Dan got padded up ready to take on the new season Bournemouth Bobcats team to find out what they get up to at their training sessions.
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Before
After
Hi Dan, well done with the Parkour last month. Have you been swinging and jumping around town? Putting my new Parkour skills to good use, I ran for the bus the other day and jumped over a puddle, that’s about it, I’m afraid. But, at least I caught the bus in time.
That looked pretty intense, how did you find it? My heart rate definitely went up and there were a few beads of sweat on my brow. It is an explosive sport which requires 100% energy over short periods of time, which I like as you get plenty of rest periods.
This month, you’re taking on the mighty force of the Bobcats. I’ve heard you’ve been looking forward to this one…is this a sport you’ve always wanted to try? Yep, definitely been looking forward to this one. I know it involves a lot of big strong guys so just hoping I can survive and make some friends early on…
What was the best part of the session and why? Even though I’m over 6 foot, I’m a massive softie so I didn’t care much for the bag tackling but, I did like running diagonals and catching the ball (without someone trying to tackle me of course!).
You’ve got a fair amount of padding on you there...What are the chances of escaping bruise free?! Slim to zero probably! My first thought was this helmet is pretty heavy duty, I wonder if they’re planning to put me onto the back of a motorbike and use me as a crash test dummy? Not sure about this!
Was it tougher than you thought it would be and how hard did they train you? Like most sports, you get out what you put in. They trained hard and I tried to keep up – I think I did OK. What were the boys and coaches like and did they make you feel welcome? Both the coaches and players were all really nice guys – very welcoming and friendly. Head Coach, Tim, helped me get settled with the equipment and slotted me into the pack to get stuck in – which was great.
Finally, how is the bruise count?! None…it was my first session so I got away bruise free. But, I probably won’t be so fortunate next time. Well done Dan and we’ll see you for the next challenge!
Would you recommend the Bobcats to anyone thinking about getting into American Football? Absolutely. The Junior and Adult team training takes place at Chapelgate by Bournemouth Airport every Saturday from 9am-11.30am. See you down there! Find out more > www.bobcats.org.uk 34

WHEELCHA
NA BIRLEY
IR BASKETB ALL PLAYER
PHOTOGRAPHY: DAN ROBERTS
This month, we speak to Joanna Birley about her life-changing accident and her love for wheelchair basketball she discovered whilst going through rehabilitation. Read her inspiring story about how she overcame her disability to continue with the sport she loves and her bid to improve facilities for wheelchair users at sports centres across the country.
A beautiful midsummer’s day in 1986 ended in disaster for Joanna Birley from Verwood in Dorset , when the horse she was riding, reared up and over backwards, crushing her underneath and breaking her spine. Joanna spent ten months in the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre on the outskirts of Salisbury, where she first fell in love with wheelchair basketball. Never having played basketball before her injury, or archery, she was chosen to compete at both in the inter-spinal unit games and went on to compete at the Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Games in 1987. During the games, Joanna was invited to train with the GB Women’s basketball team and she went on to play abroad internationally four times until she gave up to dedicate more time to being a Mum – a challenge in itself. Now, with her children older, Joanna felt she could take up basketball again and has joined the South Coast Tigers Club wheelchair division – Ferndown Wheelchair Basketball Team.
We are holding a fun fundraiser tournament this summer and are inviting local businesses to enter a team against us, sports chairs provided. Please get in touch: hobbyhorse@dsl.pipex.com

Quite the opposite of her sport taking her away from time with her children, both Megan, 22, and Robbie, 11, play as well and train with her every Friday evening as wheelchair basketball is for both able bodied and disabled players. “Everyone needs to see the Guinness advert where there are six people playing wheelchair basketball – it has a super twist at the end” Joanna says, smiling. For anyone who has a physical disability but with upper body strength, wheelchair basketball is a fantastic sport to get into – it is fast, exciting and brilliant exercise.”
Joanna says the sport is great but she has struggled to find venues to hold matches as it’s not just a hard rolling sports surface that is needed, but also facilities to accommodate numerous wheelchair-bound athletes – necessary with entering a team to the GBWBA Development League this year, which will result in a day long tournament involving teams from the Southern Division. She thought she had found the perfect venue in a newly opened local Community Sports Hall but was greatly disappointed to find that her recommendations to the design team, to ensure wheelchair users were catered for, had been ignored. Her suggestions included the floor being undersprung wood rather than the cushion floor planned, and for the two disabled toilet doorways to open into each changing room and not straight into the foyer, to give disabled users dignity and privacy. Her main plea was that if cushion flooring was installed, wheelchair users would be able to access the building but not use it for sports like the rest of the community. With the Paralympic Legacy encouraging disabled people to get into sport, Joanna, her family, friends and fellow athletes, are shocked that a brand new facility has been built like this!
Joanna feels passionately that wheelchair users should be able to access sport equally – a level playing field for all. She says, “Would they install cushion floor in a velodrome? Of course not! Yet wheelchair basketball needs the same hard-top flooring – it is a speed sport! If the installation of cushion floor on sporting floors is not curtailed, it will seriously damage the growth of wheelchair basketball – so much for the Paralympic Legacy!” She has contacted four MPs and would like to see two changes in building regulation law.
Firstly, to outlaw the installation of cushion floor in new or refurbishments of sporting venues (with only one basketball court) due to the handicapping result for wheelchair user and secondly to make it building regulations that no disabled shower rooms/toilets can open directly onto a public thoroughfare, giving disabled users dignity and privacy, as ablebodied people have in their changing facilities. “If my direct appeal to the design team on a new build sports hall to ensure it is useable by wheelchair users can be ignored, then the law must be changed, as it has now been done for building access – the building regulations should not stop at just getting us in the door, it should extend to functionality of facilities for disabled people once inside a centre.” Joanna continues to train with her fellow athletes in the Ferndown Wheelchair Basketball Team and they welcome all disabled and able bodied people to give this exciting sport a go. Joanna is hoping to gain 100,000 signatures on a petition she has lodged with the Government, as it will then be considered for debate in the House of Commons. FLETCH: THIS ONE’S FOR YOU GRANDAD It was a night he will never forget, for a man he will never forget. As Cherries legend Steve Fletcher picked up the Sir Tom Finney Award at the 2013/14 Football League awards, he paid tribute to his late Grandfather, who had played alongside the man himself. “My Grandad played for England with Sir Tom Finney,” he told afcb.co.uk. “He played for Derby County and won the FA cup with them, but he also got capped three times for England. “Sir Tom Finney and Stanley Matthews were in the same team. “It’s nice that I’m getting the Sir Tom Finney award for my Grandad who really got me interested in football. He used to stand in the back garden and when all my friends were out playing on the swings or out doing things I just wanted to play football. He’d throw the ball to me - controlling it, chesting it, heading it - just to learn all the basics. Without my Grandad’s influence when I was a teenager growing up, I might not be sat here now so it is ironic that it is the Sir Tom Finney award.” Fletcher spent a total of almost 20 years on the south coast, over two spells, before retiring from the professional game last summer upon the expiration of his contract. He enjoyed an illustrious career at the club, and has firmly etched
But the 41-year-old says that being presented with this award, which was previously named ‘credit to the game’, will be up there with the best of them. “It’s got to be one of the nicest things to achieve and receive,” he said. “To be honoured by the Football League itself for what I’ve contributed over the 20 years I’ve been a player, I can’t really put into words how I felt when I was told the other week that I was going to receive this award. I’m an emotional guy anyway, but hopefully I might be able to hold it together on the night! I am very honoured, it has to be right up there with anything I’ve achieved in football.” ‘Fletch’, as he is affectionately known to the club’s supporters, was offered a role in the scouting department by manager Eddie Howe last summer, and is now the club’s head of UK recruitment, as well as doing an ambassadorial role. And his decision to remain at the club, he says, was a no-brainer. “Why would I want to leave a club that I love? Listen there might become a time that I have to leave, whether it’s the clubs position to do that or myself. But when I was offered the position as scout and now head of recruitment and to be an ambassador for the club, yes I probably could have played another year or two and been an impact player at a league one or two club, but I didn’t want to do that”. “I don’t want to leave this town or this club just to go and pursue my career. I have nothing to prove at the age of 41 to keep playing. I’d enjoyed my time, yes I was gutted because we’d got promoted to the Championship and I couldn’t play in the Championship, but apart from that, that’s the only negative. “I’ve had a fabulous career, albeit at the lower leagues. Hopefully I will be here for a few more years yet!”
