THE SCRUM DOWN In our regular monthly feature on Bournemouth Rugby Club, we’ll bring you up to date news and gossip from the players and back room staff about the ups and downs of the season.
Profile
Alan Manning CAPTAIN OF BOURNEMOUTH RFC
Coach’s Scope TIM COLLIER / FORWARDS COACH History: Professional premiership player for 15 years. Played for Harlequins, London Welsh, and Worcester Warriors. Was the biggest premiership player in 2008 weighing 136kg, height 6’7”and with 6.5% body fat. Retired from professional playing and was invited to coach at Bournemouth Rugby Club passing on 15 years premiership knowledge. “I’ve coached at Bournemouth for 3 years. The first year was tough. We missed out on promotion by 1 point which was related to a tragic accident of one of our players, Sam Yarwood. The players were obviously upset and affected by the loss which remained throughout the season resulting in us missing the promotion. Last year saw a turning point in the team. The players bonded through
the loss of Sam and became a close knit family making a strong team. We knew we could do better and pulled together playing well which paid off with us winning the league. Here we are in my third year of coaching in the National League 2 South and the highest club within a 50 mile radius. Our ambitions at the club are to stay in the National 2 and learn as much as we can. We’re hoping for some financial backing and sponsors to help progress and fulfil the aspirations of the players. Looking ahead for this month, we are keeping our heads down and focusing on what’s on the pitch when other teams may get carried away with the Christmas season.”
“Believing we can do it is our motivation…” THE LANDLORDS REVIEW Position: Tight head prop Age: 26 Height: 6 foot Weight: 110kg Time at Bournemouth RFC: 7 years Previous Clubs: Sutton & Epsom and Dorset & Wilts Number of tries scored last year: 5 Previous achievements: Promotion to National League 2 South and winning County Championship Shield with Dorset & Wilts at Twickenham Favourite club: Harlequins Best moment: Promotion to National 2 06
The Game’s Beer Boy, Paul Whittaker is taking on Marston’s Old Empire this month to try, test and review… At a relatively strong 5.7% abv, Old Empire is classed as an Indian Pale Ale, consisting of a strong hoppy smell, a subtle taste of caramel but overall a really tasty beer. As any beer does, it accompanies food well. This time is was with a Lamb Jalfrezi, and I must say, they made good friends! Purchased from Sainsbury’s but available from many other outlets.

THE SAINT MEET THE PRO - ADAM LALLANA
W
hat an amazing year it has been for Adam Lallana – Promotion to the Premier League, being made club captain, getting an England call up and the birth of his baby boy, Arthur. The Game brings you exclusive details of this exciting time in Adams life. Congratulations on the birth of your baby boy Arthur. How are you getting on with fatherhood? Very well, surprisingly. Obviously Emily has been a massive help. Since he arrived there have been sleepless nights but it’s all worth it. Not too traumatised by the birth process then? Considering it was a caesarean, I didn’t have to witness whole shebang! I was there for it all though. The two or three days moulded in to one big day. You lose a sense of time and it was a lot slower process than I imagined it would be. I thought you would go in and six to seven hours later, the baby would arrive, but it wasn’t to be. It was 24 hours plus, hence why it was a c-section in the end. But, everything went smoothly and the midwives were brilliant. So how does it feel to be a premiership footballer? It hasn’t really sunk in yet, we’ve had some really tough games and it’s been a difficult start to the season. We’ve not got as many points on the board as we would have liked but if we work hard on the training ground and improve our focus, I’m sure we can put some things right. And you’ve been made club captain, how did the gaffa give you the news? Well he didn’t actually give me the news until he named the team. The day before the Man City game we were in the meeting room and the team came up on the projector. There was a little ‘C’ next to my name and one of the lads, Foxy, was nudging me and I didn’t quite understand why. Then literally 30 seconds later I clocked it and my heart skipped a beat. It was one of those feelings where you don’t realise straight away and I was so shocked. I really didn’t see it coming but it was a very proud moment.
Like you said, it’s been a tough start to the season for you so far... what are your thoughts on the start you have made? It’s obviously different and will take a bit of time to adjust to the premiership but it’s important we learn fast. We’ve been scoring goals as a team but defensively we’re conceding. It’s not just the back four, it’s the whole team. Defending starts from the front so we need to work together to prevent the goals going in. You can’t be scoring two or three goals every game and not winning. We need to be keeping clean sheets to get these points. And you were called up to the England squad... you must have been buzzing? Again, it was another massive shock when the manager rang me to tell me. I couldn’t quite believe it. Literally within three to four hours after the call, I was up at the Grove Hotel where they all meet up and it was quite surreal seeing the likes of Gerrard and Lampard eating their dinners across the table from me. I didn’t get a chance to train with them as the game was the next day which was a bit of a shame, but hopefully I will get another chance later on in year. So who is the best player you have come up against so far? Without a shadow of a doubt, Santi Cazorla, Arsenal’s new signing. He’s 5 foot nothing but he plays like he’s 7 foot plus! He’s just got this natural ability which not many people have and you can see why he is in the Spanish squad. He’s brought so much to Arsenal already and to play against him was an honour. I learnt a lot from him just from playing against him. He scored a goal against West Ham with his left foot and seeing as he is right footed; it proves what kind of player he is. I spoke with Chamberlain when I was away with England and we were both saying that he is honestly unbelievable! What is the best way to unwind after a game? It’s got to be coming home to my family and seeing my little boy. It puts everything into perspective and makes a defeat feel that much easier to deal with. I used to come home after a defeat and drive Emily mental not being able to sleep and now you come home and there’s a smile on your face immediately. It still hurts obviously
13
Coming home to my family and seeing my little boy puts everything into perspective and makes a defeat feel that much easier to deal with.
Who is your best friend in football? I’ve got a few to be fair. At the minute I would probably say Richard Chaplain and Danny Fox. Great lads! What car do you drive? Porche Panamera and Emily has a Range Rover Evoque. What food is your guilty pleasure? At the minute it’s chocolate, big time. I’ve got a massive galaxy bar on bedside table and when I’m up feeding the baby in middle of the night, I often sneak a bit! Past or present, who is the best player ever? Messi, it has to be.
to lose but the little man makes everything feel better. We’re going to try and get to the cinema at the weekend, that’s something we quite like doing. We enjoy eating out and trying different restaurants as we’re both not very good in the kitchen! What can you see yourself wanting to do after your football career? In the summer, I was invited down to the Rose Bowl to watch the cricket with the Coventry team and I met the guys that commentate on the Saints games. I was quite intrigued by it and it could be a possibility if I was fortunate enough to go into something similar. I quite like the lifestyle that they seemed to have. They still get to watch the games and have good banter. Gary Neville is doing a bit of both with coaching for England and commentating for Sky and seems to be really enjoying it. It’s still quite far off me having to make that decision but the career isn’t very long so you have to start thinking about your options fairly early. What is the best goal you have ever scored? My goal at Wembley in the St Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final. It was a couple of years ago. Do you have any superstitions before the game? They kind of come in fits and fads really. I always put my left boot on before my right boot and my left shin pad before right. I get my left side of my body massaged before my right. You go through different stages like if you score one week, you have the same pre match routine next week. Some people in the team have mad superstitions like washing their face three times before they go out or putting their shirt on just before they walk out onto the pitch. 14
Will you be sporting a Mo for Movember this year? Yeah maybe, we did it last year. Prior to our Christmas do we all grew our beards and before we went out, everyone had a shave and left the mo’s. We all turned up with our partners and there were some extraordinary tash’s on show! We might be doing it again this year. The lads like to get together a raise a bit of money for charity. And finally what is the best moment in your life? The birth of your baby boy or the minute you stepped out onto the pitch of your very first premiership game against Man City?! The birth of my boy hands down, without a doubt. Even though Man City was great, it doesn’t compare to holding you’re first born. Big ‘Thank you’ to Adam for his time and wishing him the best of luck for the rest of the season and with little Arthur Lallana.

This Month 2 0
Here’s our pick of what’s on in November. We’re keeping a close eye on what’s not to be missed on the sports and leisure calendar each month both locally and around the world.
18
Fifa Futsal World Cup Thailand 1 - 18 NOVEMBER A major event in the Futsal calendar and covered on Sky Sports, the Futsal World Cup kicks off on 1st November. A 5-a-side game with some twists, the high energy game has some similarities with an 11-a-side football match but with some interesting differences too.
Did you know…
• On average, a player will touch the ball twelve times more than in 11-a-side football • Each half played is 20 minutes • If a player has been sent off, a substitution can be made after 2 minutes • There is no off-side rule • The ball is ever so slightly smaller than a football • Futsal promises a high-paced, fastflowing game for spectators

To all you local Mo Bro’s (and Mo • Occurrences of prostate cancer in men Sistas!) out there, it’s that time of the are comparable to the rates of breast year to let your ‘mo grow’ to help raise cancer in women awareness and funds for men’s health, • Testicular cancer in the UK affects specifically prostate and testicular cancer. With the support of the women younger men between the ages of 20 and 50 in their lives, Movember is about real men growing real moustaches and • Men are 80% less likely to visit their talking about real issues. years on, this story is still inspiring thousands of people around the world…
Famously quoted, “I was as hot as a pistol”, Jason was catapulted to celebrity status enjoying opportunities from all over the United States. The Indianapolis Colts invited him to train at their camp for a week, he had countless interviews including The Oprah Winfrey Show and Larry King Live and not long following the game in March 2006, President George Bush made a stop in his busy schedule to meet Jason. Bush, having admitted he had tears in his eyes watching the footage, commented, “Our country was captivated by an amazing story on the basketball court. It’s the story of a young man who found his touch on the basketball court, which, in turn, touched the hearts of citizens, all around the country.”
On February 15th 2006, American autistic high school student, 17 year old Jason McElwain, was launched into fame after a four minute appearance in a basketball match. Today, the story has become a motivational tool in its own right spreading the message of beating barriers and confronting challenges in sport and day to day life. Jason McElwain, or ‘J Mac’, as he is known, was diagnosed with autism at an early age and initially Jason has since written a book along with his struggled to interact with peers. The older he got family, coach and teammates and a film is in the more social skills he developed and found a discussions with Columbia Pictures holding the passion for basketball after being introduced to the rights to produce it. J Macs mantra of ‘Stay game by his brother. Focused’ sums up his drive and tenacity in his

After missing the first two shots, Jason ‘caught fire’ and his disability which in his case presents itself in fearlessness, helped him focus for the third shot. In front of 900 captivated spectators, the 5’ 6” boy succeeded and scored a three-pointer to the eruption of cheers from every person watching. He didn’t stop there and continued to shoot a further five three-pointers and one two-point shot, before the game ended with a resounding victory to Greece Athena of 79-43. J Mac had scored twenty points for his team making the ecstatic, amazed and tearful spectators and team mates storm the court in celebration.

The Game presents to you the latest news, reviews and leisure highlights from the most prestigious expanse of coastline in England
A
small piece of land with a big reputation, Sandbanks is undoubtedly the hidden gem of our local coastline. Measuring just 1km2, the peninsula and surrounding area is home to the largest concentration of expensive properties outside London. Boasting the beauty of the natural harbour on one side and the expanse of award winning beaches on the other, this hot spot is fast becoming a utopia for water sports. Having an average depth of just 48 cm, varied wind conditions and rare designated areas almost exclusively for sports use, the harbour side offers a perfect setting for a wide range of water based sports for all abilities.
THE GAME’S PICK OF TOP WATER SPORTS SCHOOLS Poole Windsurfing - Great windsurfing tuition from expert instructors in the harbour using top of the range, latest equipment. www.poolewindsurfing.co.uk The Water Sports Academy - Sandbanks’ premier water sports training facility for experienced enthusiasts and beginners. Offering windsurfing, kite surfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, power boat rides, corporate days and charters, boat and yacht charters, kids club and more.
Poole Harbour is one of several locations which lay claim to being the second largest natural harbour in the world. Four rivers drain into the harbour, the largest being the river Frome. Holes Bay is a tidal inland lake which is joined to the main harbour by a small inlet. This is home to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) training school, attached to their Poole headquarters.

The harbour hosts over 100 sailing and waterbased events each year. The ever-growing popularity of the sports seen in the harbour include windsurfing, wakeboarding, kite surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding and sailing and are an ideal match for the relatively flat water conditions. In the shelter of the Purbeck hills to the south, the waters are known as a perfect location for beginners to these sports but also provide a large water playground for the more experienced riders.
H2o Sports - With lessons from the perfect conditions of the harbour, H2o teaches windsurfing, kite surfing, stand up paddle boarding and wake boarding.

Celebrating some of the classic characters from the local leagues. Changing room banter firsthand from the gaffa’s mouth. The Clown – who keeps team spirits high? To be fair, there are a number of candidates for this title. The one stand out name has to be Ben Virabi though. It’s never a dull moment when he is about! Pictured below left....Nice bum! Best Tekkers – who has the skills to pay the bills? Give this one to Timmy ‘The Tekkers’ Constable... when he turns up that is! A lot of talent, but zero work rate. The Cheat – who loves a dive? Cheat is a harsh word to label anyone with! I would suggest gamesmanship could be a better way of describing this persons occasional ‘triple-somersault with tuck’ dive into the penalty area. None other than the prolific Robbie Woolner!
Portcastrian FC Est: 1965 Over the last eight seasons, Portcastrian FC have climbed The Bournemouth Saturday league tables from a midtable division 6 team to title contenders in the Premier league and Pickford Cup winners 2010. We interviewed manager of the year 2010 and ex Southampton professional footballer Fernando Valdivielso aka ‘Ferd da Word’ to tell us a little bit more about his squad.
The Lightweight – who’s first to let the side down? On or off the pitch?! If we are talking about on the pitch and in terms of crying off with injury at the first chance, I can look no further than the brains behind this new magazine… Steve Crawford. Off the pitch it would have to be David Young... he loves a sleep on a team night out and we once caught him trying to smoke a chip. Pictured below left. Mr Vain – who absolutely rates themselves? I know a lot of the lads would say me, but since I’m the one being interviewed, I will pass the accolade elsewhere. To be fair, there are again a few who might be worthy of this one… I’m going to pick on a lad who is so insistent on making sure his hair is pristine before and during the match and refuses to head the ball - Harrison ‘CR9’ Clements! Biggest liability on and off the pitch Could be Youngy again... he is susceptible to the odd moment of less than perfect decision making and received two red cards in three games last season. Off the pitch, our whole team are an accident waiting to happen. However the Chairman’s grandson, Alex Mackenzie is often stealing the limelight! Worst Dress Sense – Who needs to update their threads? Surprisingly, the boys who reside in our countries capital both have issues in this department. Lewis Dear - It could be 95 degrees and he would still be seen donning a stripy jumper! M&S number 1 customer... Tom Hughes - crap suede shoes and an array of distinctly vulgar tops. This boy should stop spending three hours in the bath every Saturday morning and get shopping! Biggest Bottle Job – who always ducks out of a tackle? This is any easy one – Russell Woolner can often be seen running away from a tackle. Get stuck in son! The team social spot – where is your designated club house on a Saturday night? Well much like our nomad football team, we don’t really have a ‘home’ for Saturday nights. I suppose the obvious spots we can be found would include Priva, Alika and Aruba swiftly followed by KFC, Snappies and Ali Baba’s – my team are prime athletes, only the best cuisine will do at 5am.
32
Who’s the longest in the shower? Mark Goldsworthy and Martin Lawrence seem to spend a lot of time in there after the rest of the team have vacated! And River Smith nicknamed ‘The Nile’.... one word..... LONG!

SUSTAINING THE FLAME Each month we are looking at two sports from the 2012 Olympic Games, reflecting on how well we did as a team and where you can get involved with the sport locally.
The arrival of the Olympic torch to the London 2012 Games was the beginning of an honourable and significant legacy in our country’s sporting history. From the very start in 2003 when the bid began, the vision wasn’t only to design and host the world’s biggest sporting event but to also present the first sustainable Olympic and Paralympic Games ever seen. The flame was finally extinguished at the Paralympic Closing Ceremony on 9th September but the strategies in place and commitment to continue its message has only just started…
TAEKWONDO
19 year-old, Jade Jones won gold in Taekwondo for GB on 9th August at the London 2012 Games. She was the first ever British Taekwondo athlete to win Olympic gold and is set for more success in the Rio Games in four years time. Lutalo Muhammad followed becoming the first British man to win an Olympic taekwondo medal scooping bronze in the -80kg final.
GET INVOLVED Taekwondo is a full body, high calorie burning sport requiring strength, balance and co-ordination. It is enjoyed by over 60 million people worldwide and it became one of the official Olympic sports in the Millennium 2000 Games in Sydney. For those who may not want to take part in actual combat, the moves involved in the sport improve strength and condition and can be used in exercise to build fitness and stability. Find out more locally at: www.dtkd.co.uk 34
ROWING
Winning Britain’s first gold medal of the 2012 Games, Heather Stanning and Helen Glover claimed gold for the coxless pairs on 1st August setting the success for many more to follow. It ended Britain’s five day wait for gold and the duo made history becoming the first British female rowers to win an Olympic title. From there, Team GB’s rowers went on to win nine medals across 13 events. They exceeded the target set and were the most successful Olympic rowing team for a second successive Games. The achievement was the result of a long-term plan aided by lottery funding and inspired by Sir Steve Redgrave’s five Olympic gold medal wins. Scouts were sent out to schools across the country in the search for potential olympians.
GET INVOLVED Rowing requires strength and stamina. It works a large number of muscles in your body and increases endurance in the arms, back and legs. It also improves co-ordination and is a great team building sport developing communication skills between individuals. There are over 500 rowing clubs and around 300 events across the country. Getting out on the local waterways whilst increasing fitness gives the sport its popularity. Check out Christchurch Rowing Club to find out more: www.christchurchrowingclub.co.uk
MISSION 1 Here at The Game Magazine, we believe that sport is for everyone. To prove this we have recruited Bournemouth’s nightclub owner and serial entrepreneur... Introducing the ‘Have a Go Hero’ JOSH SIMONS. He is the brains behind PRIVA but he aims to prove that there is a lot more in his locker. Josh will be taking on our challenges every month to have a go at something he has never tried before.

SURFING
This month we have sent Josh to SURF STEPS Bournemouth Surf School to take part in a lesson delivered by some of the area’s premier instructors. Have you ever tried surfing before? Nope, never. I’ve tried water skiing a couple of times a while ago, but nothing recently. I’ve always thought of it as a niche culture and I haven’t got the long, flowing blonde locks to fit the scene. Do you know what to do?! Not really but I’ve watched Point Break 3 times in the last week. I’m thinking this will just be the first steps and basics today. It looks good fun though. How are you feeling about this challenge? I’m not too worried about it to be honest but that might all change when I’m actually in the sea... I hope these wetsuits are insulated. The waves don’t look too big today so that’s a plus and I’ve brought my armbands just in case. 1 hour later... So, how do you think it went? Really good. It was great fun. The wetsuit was very flattering and made me look ripped. The instructors were brilliant and I won’t forget the basics that I’ve learnt today. The water was shallow and thankfully not too cold... so no shrinkage issues to report.
How many times do you think you wiped out?! I had a few wobbly moments! I reckon a course of lessons would sort that out, to help practise and develop a good technique. How hard was it from 1 – 5 (one being easy) This was just the basics today so I would say from today, 1. However, surfing in general is no doubt a lot harder when you are doing it in harsher conditions. It wasn’t too much of a challenge, although I shouldn’t say that without knowing what you’ve got in store for me next month! Would you do it again? Absolutely, 100%. Might actually go out with some mates this week to get stoked. I’ve even purchased some surf wax... perfect for my barnet.
Well done, Josh for completing your first mission. Look out for next month’s ‘Have a go hero’ challenge where we up the stakes and push Josh to his limits.

Super Fletch Update There is a really good feeling around the club at the moment after we got our first home win of the season against Leyton Orient. It is also great to have Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall back at the club. Training has been very upbeat, as would be expected upon arrival of new management, and every player has been keen to impress as it is a fresh start for many. Although our indifferent start to the season is not ideal, I do believe that a run of positive results combined with the quality we have within the squad, will give us the capability to mount a serious push towards the right end of the table.

“Expectations are very high at this club, but for me that should bring out the best in every player.” We have a relatively large squad and competition for places is high due to the quality within the dressing room, but everybody is fighting for their place. If we are going to achieve anything this season we must do it as a team, as has been displayed by every single club in football history. With togetherness, desire and the will to succeed, anything is possible.
