Poole Pirates’ 2013 season is well underway at Poole Stadium since opening at Easter. The 2012 Elite League table toppers are making good progress already and have their sights on another championship win to go alongside their trophies of 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2011. However Pirates’ boss, Matt Ford says it won’t be easy in a year when the league seems set to become one of the most closely fought campaigns of recent seasons. He is, however, as enthusiastic as ever about the prospects of his Poole team and is confident that there will be the usual helping of high speed thrills at Wimborne Road’s Poole Stadium throughout the summer, leading up the play-off finals in September. “What I can definitely say is that for speedway’s X-Factor – there will be no more entertaining side than our own Poole Pirates, It’s a team that will never know when it is beaten,” explains Ford. “Somehow we have managed to keep the incredible “Turbo Twins” of Chris Holder and Darcy Ward at Poole for a fourth successive season. They are not just two of the most outstanding talents in World Speedway, but both are real contenders for the World crown, which Chris himself bagged last Autumn.” I believe that is a huge coup for British Speedway and, more importantly, for the town to have them here every week. It also makes Poole the most attractive visiting team in the league when we race away from home, with gates being substantially increased when our Pirates are billed against the local favourites.” But Ford is also quick to acknowledge the part played by the other team members. “We have a new, young and exciting look this year. It’s not just about Chris and Darcy, but all seven of our “tough as teak” team,” he continues. In “Magic” Maciej Janowski we have another emerging star who has already lifted the World Under 21 Crown and is set for truly great things. Plus our two reserves, Australian hotshot Rohan Tungate and British Bulldog Kyle Howarth, have already set the shale alight with some gutsy, match-winning performances.” With polish duo Dawid Stachyra and Robert Miskowiak showing well in the opening fixtures, despite a nasty leg injury to the latter which kept him on the sidelines for a few meetings, there is a real buzz about the place. “The season lasts through September and October,” says Ford. “We will be there at the end and always with our sights on a play-off place, just as we have managed in all but one of the last six seasons, it’s going to be another summer of speed and excitement for sure and, at the end of it all, we hope to have the trophy to show for it.”
HE CAN BE “MAGIC!” MACIEJ JANOWSKI World U21 Champion 2011 Polish U21 Champion 2008 Age: 21 Nationality: Polish Joined Poole: 2013 Polish Speedster Maciej (Pronounced “Matchek”) Janowski is the latest in a long dynasty of young and exciting talent to be captured by the Poole Pirates speedway team. Nicknamed “Magic” by the fans, he is a former World Junior Champion with a career path that is clearly on the upward spiral and, what’s more, he is relishing the chance to race regularly at his preferred venue. Speaking at the club’s recent press launch, the young Pole was quick to explain that he had wanted to ride for Poole in the UK this year and no other team would do! “I hope that everyone will come and watch us because I think we have a great team and we are going to do well this year.”

Coach’s Scope DAVID DUNN / DIRECTOR OF RUGBY DARK CLOUDS GATHERING OVER CHAPELGATE Here we are in mid April and the pitch remains a real cause for concern at Chapelgate after months of uninterrupted rainfall. Having returned to winning ways with an excellent victory over Clifton, the Lions were stopped in their tracks by waterlogged pitches throughout the West Country. I woke early on match day to prepare for the visit of Dings Crusaders only to receive a telephone call to ask me to inspect the pitch. When I arrived it was almost fully submerged and there was no way any Rugby could be played. The following week we prepared well to visit Taunton until we received a telephone call on match day informing us that their pitch was waterlogged too. This has meant we will be playing Rugby until mid May which I cannot recall ever happening before. More importantly, we lost any impetus we had gained and had to start all over again when preparing for the long trip to Cornwall to play Cornish All Blacks. We arrived in good spirits and took the large home crowd by surprise with an early try. Launceston tried to get back into the game but a really determined Lions outfit battled to hold onto the lead. Throughout the game there had been some overzealous play from the Cornishmen in their bid to intimidate the new boys in the League. Sadly the only
person who was intimidated was the referee who proceeded to give a string of penalties against the Lions and promptly despatched two players to the sin bin. Thirteen men battled bravely to hold on to a 22 – 16 lead but two late tries meant the Lions came away empty handed. The only positive outcome was that two disciplinary hearings found two Bournemouth players not guilty of the offences for which they had been sent from the field and both escaped bans. The following week we were without a game so I took advantage of watching Dings and Lydney, both of whom were to be our opponents in the near future. They played on a bone dry surface and it was very revealing to see how both teams tried to play the game. This informed our training ahead of the crucial game against Lydney in the Forest of Dean. When we arrived we could not believe our bad luck to see wind and rain and mud on a mid April day that was better suited to February. Despite a valiant effort and matching the home side for tries, their four penalty kicks made the difference. Although they won, they went ahead with their” relegation party” so let’s hope we don’t need one of those. With four games remaining, it is looking very tight at the bottom of the league. Victories in two of these games will see us safe so come on you Lions! David is sponsored by Bonsai Lounge

THE LANDLORD’S REVIEW Our well seasoned beer taster, Paul, has a quality Marston’s ale to try, test and review…I’m quite partial to a pale ale every now and again and this one is a good one! Marston’s Strong Pale Ale 6.2% is stronger than an angry Fatima Whitbread with a subtle yet slightly fruity taste. It’s a clear amber colour, slightly hoppy in smell and I think it would go well with pretty much all foods, that is good for me as I’ll drink it with anything! Definitely one of the better beers I’ve had to test.

My name is Floyd Gordon, I was born in a little town in Jamaica called Stepney, fifteen minute’s walk from Nine Mile where the Legend Bob Marley was born. In Jamaica as a child you are taught to cook at a tender age for family and friends. As I grew up I worked in our family restaurant creating flavourful healthy dishes, now I am living in Bournemouth, England. I took with me over thirty years of experience in cooking Caribbean food to the Rhumbar Caribbean Bar and Grill. Today we are going to give you one of our famous recipes at the Rhumbar, ‘Jerk chicken’, healthy, spicy and flavourful. This is one of the healthiest and most loved meals in the Caribbean.
Jerk Chicken Brought to you by Rhumbar Caribbean Bar and Grill Ingredients
Method
1 Fresh chicken 1 Onion 2 stalk spring onions 2 Spring thyme 3 Scotch bonnet peppers 2 Garlic cloves 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil ½ cup allspice (pimento seeds) 1 tbsp. chicken seasoning 1 tbsp. all spice seasoning 1 cup soy sauce 1 tbsp. browning 1 Lemon
• Cut the chicken into four quarters, remove unwanted bits and wash with the lemon, place in a container and refrigerate until needed.
Nutritional Facts
• Heat the oven to 175c gas mark 3, place the chicken in a baking tray skin side up, cover with foil and bake for 30-35 minutes.
Chicken is packed with essential nutrients, great source of protein. Garlic contains vitamin C, vitamin B6, selenium and manganese. Scotch Bonnet Peppers good source of fibre to aid digestion and helps to lower blood cholesterol.

• Place allspice and scotch bonnet in a processor, add all the other ingredients and blend into a smooth marinade. • Remove chicken from the fridge and pour the marinade over it, rub the marinade all over the chicken, cover with cling film and place in the fridge for 3-4 hours (best left over night).
• For the last 5 minutes remove the foil and allow the chicken to get colour, or for a more authentic look and flavour finish the last 10 minutes on a char grill. • Remove chicken, cut to portion, and enjoy with tomato ketchup or your favourite sauce.
Our local film expert, Dan, set himself a marathon challenge this month by taking on the full set of the legendary boxing blockbuster saga, Rocky. Dan has worked as a visual effects artist on some blockbusting movies including Star Wars and The Dark Knight.
As with most men my age, Rocky has been with us our whole lives. First in 1976, a cultural icon was born that has spanned the decades of our youth, teenage years, 20 something’s and now our late 30s (I do speak from a personal perspective here!). With rumours planned for more, it seems this juggernaut just keeps packing a punch at the box office. It seems the older Stallone gets, the more respect for his work he seems to develop. I won’t lie...the saggy lips of a speech impaired brute has always fallen foul to mockery from the playground to the bars of the sports halls, but it would seem always with a fond heart, for Rocky still lives strong today and has become a global treasure.
Rocky (1976)
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is a small-time boxer who seems to be going nowhere in life, as he works day-in day-out as a debt collector for a loan shark and fights in sleazy clubs for low-paid reward. Mocked by friends and gym trainer Mickey Goldmill that he’s nothing but a ‘bum’, Rocky tries to date Adrian Pennino, a painfully shy woman who works in a pet shop with an alcoholic brother. But when heavyweight champion of the world, Apollo Creed chooses Rocky at random as his opponent in a title fight, Rocky realises he now has the chance to prove he is not worthless.
Rocky II (1979)
Having won the last fight over a split decision, Rocky marries Adrian and rides the high life for a very short period after he fails to perform for endorsements and a series of low paid jobs. Apollo shocked and criticised by fans taunts Rocky publicly for a rematch. Rocky realises the only way he can survive is to continue boxing with trainer Mickey and takes Apollo to the fifteenth round when both boxers knock each other to the ground. The first to rise will be the heavyweight champion of the world...
die. Distraught and at an all time low, former rival Apollo steps in as trainer and takes him to the underground LA gyms and shows the fighters have the ‘Eye Of The Tiger’ which has long since gone out in Rocky.
Rocky IV (1985)
Enter 6ft 4, Ivan Drago (played by Dolph Lundgren), the Russian boxer set on not only beating Rocky but burying him 6ft under. Rocky is more concerned with spending time with his new family and Apollo steps into the ring in his place for what should be a friendly fight. The fight goes terribly wrong and after a beating, Apollo is killed and dies in Rocky’s arms in the ring. Fuelled with revenge, Rocky offers a fight with Drago on Christmas day in Moscow. Rocky takes the worst beating of his life but takes it to the final round and wins over the foreign crown with his endurance.
Rocky V (1990)
The weakest of the set sees Rocky forced to retirement having suffered brain damage from the fight with the Russian. With his financial fortune squandered by an incompetent accountant, he sells his home and possessions in an attempt to pay back his debts. Moving back to their working-class neighbourhood, Rocky resists big money offered to him by boxing promoter George Washington Duke and becomes trainer to talented newcomer, Tommy Gunn. Rocky’s son (played by Stallone’s real-life son, Sage Stallone) feels neglected by his father, who focuses his attention on Tommy but which ends in betrayal.
Rocky Balboa (2006)
This is a return to form, like a book end to the Rocky we love of 1976; this has the feel and pace of the original. Long retired, Rocky Balboa’s son has grown distant and Adrian has died. Rocky now opens a restaurant named after his late wife which is adorned with pictures of his past glories. This film has a maturity and nostalgia which somehow ties the saga together and Rocky III (1982) and embraces what was truly great Propelled into the spotlight, Rocky is about the original. Rocky reignites more interested in playing the fame game with an ego to match. Preparing some motivation for the sport and after a chance opportunity to prove to retire on the top, he is taunted by himself in the ring once more, James “Clubber” Lang (played by he almost wins, but loses by split the legendary Mr. T). Before getting decision. This is somehow just what we back in the ring, trainer Mickey has a heart attack, with his mind off the fight wanted to see, not the hero but the Rocky gets knocked out in the second mature man and the spirit still alive. round only to rush back to see Mickey A great finale to the greatest boxing saga that spans two decades.

TUNEAGE
DJ Charles Music to train to
I’ve just returned from a two week trip in the States and have had some great inspiration for May’s tracks to get your heart rate up! I’ve narrowed it down to my three hottest tracks this month. Get Lucky Daft Punk Ft. Pharrell Firstly, I’d like to start with three of my favourite artists of all time working together. The super cool disco robots, Daft Punk, and the man behind the Neptunes and N*E*R*D’s unique sound on the vocals, Pharrell. It’s the first single Daft Punk have released in eight years and has already topped the charts in only one day and smashed all of Spotify’s streaming records. ‘Get Lucky’ is a bass driven, funky, disco track that you can’t help but move along to. If you haven’t already… GET IT!
Waze & Odyssey Bump ‘n’ Grind (Original Mix)
Waze & Odyssey have emerged from the growing sound of deep house that has recently gone crazy with the commercial market. In this track, they have taken a classic sample from a 90’s RnB track from R-Kelly and have remixed it with a 90’s house riff that sounds great. This track will get you moving!
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Ft. Ray Dalton
Last but by no means least, this track has all the right elements you need for a workout. Punchy rap verses and a big, melodic chorus sung by the one and only Ray Dalton. This is a huge track in the clubs in the States right now and is going to be a big hit here. Macklemore has done it again. Until next month, Keep up the hard work!

Winning Britain’s 26th gold medal of the Olympics, World and European title winning Ed McKeever claimed victory against his Spanish and Canadian opponents in the kayak K1 final. This was the second time ever that Britain scooped gold in the canoe sprint event following Tim Brabants in 2008.
Gemma Gibbons won silver in the -78kg Judo final becoming Britain’s first Olympic judo medallist in 12 years. She had beaten three of the world’s top ten to get to the final and put up an impressive fight against Amercian, Kayla Harrison who took gold. Gemma commented on her superb achievement, “There has been a lot of hard work and a lot of ups and downs, and it’s all come together at the best possible time.”Karina Bryant took bronze in the +78kg event with an added achievement of it being her fourth Olympic games representing Great Britain.
Cheered on by a 30,000 strong crowd, he kept up a ruthless pace to the end prize commenting, “I feel relief. It sounds stupid but it’s not elation, more relief, and I’m so happy to do it in front of a home crowd.” GET INVOLVED Paddling against water increases the muscle power in the arms and legs and improves the strength of your heart and lung function. he Game talks exclusively to Chris Holder - current Speedway World Champion, winner of the British Grand Prix 2012 and skipper of local elite Speedway team, the Poole Pirates, about what it takes to be the best in the world, riding a motorbike at up to 70mph with no brakes and living life in the fast lane. Hi Chris, thanks for talking to us… what got you into Speedway? It was my dad’s side of the family who were into motorbikes. Not so much speedway, just motorbikes in general and one of my dad’s friends actually rode for the Poole Pirates. Craig Boyce… he was the all time record points scorer for this club and is a bit of a legend here. My dad used to have a bit of a ride but he never did it professionally, just for a bit of fun so it pretty much started through my old man. Congratulations on winning the World Championship last year. Has this been one of the major highlights in your career? Yeah definitely, it’s what I set out to do when I first began and to actually do it, was a dream come true. It’s a bit of a blur still. It feels funny to be called ‘World Champion’ and feels weird! It’s good though, I love it. All the things that have come with it have been really good and I’m enjoying it. So, I’d like to obviously win it again, if I can. You also won the British Speedway Grand Prix at the Millennium Stadium last year, how did that feel? Cardiff is our biggest Grand Prix; it has the biggest crowd with around 40,000 people going. It’s such a big event and the whole weekend is just huge and to win it, there was no better feeling, apart from being World Champion. To win that Grand Prix was such a big buzz and it was hard to come down from… we had to race the next day in Poland. That’s one of my biggest highlights too, winning Cardiff. Last season, there was a lot of reliance on you and Darcy Ward, what do you think of the team this year and what are your views on the strength you have between you? I think our team is good. It’s definitely stronger all the way through, not just the top two guys, so that’s going to be good. Our reserves are quite handy, like Kyle last night (at time of interview). He pretty much won us the meeting. It just comes down to injuries too… we race so much and you’ve got to stay injury free and that’s a big thing. I think if we can do that we’re going to be up the top end for sure.

a week so the times where you’re not racing, you don’t really want to be in a gym or running a marathon! Do you play any other sports outside of Speedway and is there anything you can’t do because of your career? I wouldn’t say there is anything I can’t do, I try and do all the things I want to do. Obviously, I need to keep in mind that I can’t get hurt and I’m not really supposed to be injured! I try and do a lot of surfing when I’m home. I couldn’t do too much this year with my knee though. We also have a wakeboarding park not far from where I live in Australia so pretty much do these watersports and the motocross. Those are the three things I do most of the time.
You seem to have a great partnership with Darcy, is this a natural bond or has it built up over time? We’ve been racing together for a few years now, not just in England, but in Poland and even in Sweden a couple of years ago. So, we’ve done a lot of racing together and hung out a lot together too so we know each other really well. It works on the track too when you’re good friends with somebody you know…you know what each other’s going to do and all that sort of thing. It’s been awesome; we’ve had some good races down here. It’s good we can do it for another year. Speedway is notorious for bumps and breaks, what’s the worst injury you’ve had? Actually, I’ve been pretty good, touch wood! But, at the end of last year, I hurt my knee pretty badly. That was three months of doing absolutely nothing and it killed me. That was the worst one and I really don’t want to go through that again. Do you have different bikes for different tracks and are they set up depending on the track type? I’ve got in total six bikes. I keep two here and four in Poland. It’s not so much the bike, they are all exactly the same, but just the engines are a little bit different from each one. The ones in England are different to the Polish style bikes but there’s not much between them. I can pretty much jump on all of them and they’ll all be good. You have done a lot of varied travel around the world. How do you cope with that? At the beginning, it’s tough. We’ve had four months break and then to come back and to get into it is quite hard to
18
get back into the swing of things. But, once the season is going, it’s easy. You just go along with it all. A couple of years ago, I used to struggle at the back end of the year. But, last year, I changed that around a bit and did a few things a little differently and it’s been good, so hopefully I can do the same this year and I’ll be good all the way through. Speedway is an exhilarating sport to watch with a superb atmosphere down at Poole… can you describe how it feels to ride at the speeds you do in front of the roaring fans? There is no better feeling than going fast on a bike with no brakes and going sideways! It’s good and to do it here at Poole is really cool. It is hands down the best following and best club in England and its good to be here. We can hear them all when we come up, usually on the last race when there’s a lot on the line. When you’re winning and they’re cheering, it feels really good. Other than Speedway, do you own any other bikes? Yeah, I’ve got a couple of motocross bikes that Matt (Ford) loves me riding during the season! Me and Darcy actually share a Jet Ski too so we have that. To be honest before the season, we get a couple of weeks here and there but once it’s going, we can ride the Jet Ski a fair bit but not really the motocross bikes so much. What’s your fitness training regime? To be honest, I don’t really have set training that I do. I keep fit in off season by keeping active with motocross, surfing and wakeboarding. I do a lot of watersports and motor sports that keeps me pretty good so once our season kicks off, we’re racing three to four times
When you’re not racing, what do you like to spend your time doing to unwind in between seasons? Just to hang out now I have a proper family with my boy, Max and my girlfriend, Sealy. So, just hanging out with them and having a bit of a holiday. Because we spend a lot of time here, we have friends and family in Australia to catch up with. I play a bit of golf, I’m not really that good at it but do it for something to do and just really take it easy, pretty much. Living locally to Poole for over half the year, what do you think of the town and surrounding area? I think it’s great if you’re a young sort of person. It’s a perfect place to be and has got everything; really close to the water, sandy beaches, if you want a good night out there’s good places to go to. It’s perfect really, that’s why I like living here and when the sun is out, it’s a great place to be. What’s your favourite place to… Eat? Tower Park for sure, it’s got everything there. Play? Usually on the Jet Ski; we go rain, hail or shine out in the harbour or in front of the beaches. Chill? Just around town, along Poole Quay or in Bournemouth, depending what sort of mood I’m in. Finally, what’s the team spirit and goals for the 2013 Pirates? The team spirit is pretty cool. Our team this year has every rider as a bit of a fighter. Everyone is trying and racing really hard. No one cruises around and gets just the one point; they’re all going for the win so we’ve got a good, battling team you could say. We want to be in the final again so the play off’s, getting to the final and winning. We were runner up last year because of a few injuries and we finished on top through the league but the play offs didn’t quite come through, so it would be nice to get it back. Just to have a successful year. Thank you for talking to us and we wish you and the whole team and crew a successful season and to hopefully claim back the champion spot in the 2013 Elite League.

Kick Off Your Career… How to be successful in an interview
Julie Cook-Hughes, Managing Director & Founder of SOS recruitment
As we explained in the last issue, you never get a second chance to make the right first impression. However what happens after you submit your CV? A good recruitment agency will keep you posted on the status of it at all times. If you’re invited to interview the recruitment agency will guide you through every step to make sure you know as much about the people that are interviewing you and how they like to operate. Working with a great recruitment agency is therefore crucial to your career steps. Mastering a few simple techniques could secure you that all-important, sought-after job so it’s essential you take this advice on board. Put simply, competition is higher than ever in the current economic climate so make sure you do everything you can to stand out. Research The permanent consultants at SOS recruitment recommend researching the employer details as much as possible. This might seem obvious but they don’t just mean history, background or general information as you will be doing nothing different than regurgitating the website. Remember, the people interviewing you know all this already so stand out and quote other news such as charities they support, affiliates they are involved with and recent events - and provide your opinion on each if plausible. If you can link research to posts you’ve seen on Twitter or show that you’ve read their blog the company will be more than impressed to say the least. Handshake There’s a real truth about a good handshake combined with effective eye contact. A handshake to remember is firm and equal to the other person; placing your hand on top or below is a sign of dominance or subservience. Extend your arm and go in for the handshake-welcome, whilst looking up, making eye contact and engaging with your audience. Stating your name and the all-important ‘Nice to meet you’ at the same time will work wonders. The interviewer will like and respect your confidence and take these as positive traits that you are friendly, open, welcoming and approachable. Body Language & Dress Code How you express yourself goes far beyond the words you use. Research shows that 55% of a first impression is based on visual impact. Consequently it is key that your dress code is spot on; scruffy dress creates a bad impression and poor body language can hint at traits such as deceitfulness, nervousness, boredom or aggression. If you are being interviewed by more than one person, maintain eye contact with the full interview panel. As your interviewer explains the opportunity to you, show a positive reaction by nodding and smiling. Regarding dress code this is a business opportunity so dress to impress – it’s as simple as that. You need to dress in business wear; men should wear ties and be cleanly shaven. You’d be surprised how many people forget about their shoes so ensure you have clean, shiny or even new shoes if possible.
20
Don’t Cave Under the Pressure Now that you’re in the interview room this is your time to shine so don’t ruin it by panicking or caving under the pressure. Our tips are to take deep breaths whilst you are waiting, talk slowly and communicate clearly. Under interview pressure it’s easy to get carried away by talking too fast or too much; slow down and keep it relevant. Keep your answers concise but be ready to expand on information and don’t just give yes or no answers. This could be your one and only chance to impress the interviewer so show them you are rational, composed and think your answers through. This is your opportunity to highlight the best examples of yourself so don’t rush through these positive points – use your time wisely and get the employer to concentrate on your every word.
Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses This point is very important and shows the potential employer that you know yourself and can be confident on both strengths and weaknesses in the workplace. Some people think you shouldn’t reveal weaknesses but in fact the opposite is true. The trick lies in recognising something that could be a strength but in disguise. For example, that you work too much or you’re a perfectionist. Therefore practice beforehand and know exactly what you are going to say. The potential employer does not want to hear weaknesses such as you have a low attention span, that you’re late to work or have trouble accepting authority! These are big no-no’s. Take this as the time to position a weakness positively and go one step further to outline how being employed by the company that is seeing you would help you develop as a person, gain extra qualifications, extra training and support, learn a new language or allow you to build on a skill you need. Positioning yourself at the company in question and what you think you can learn from them will go down very nicely. It also shows you are willing to learn and advance with the company, which they will respect. Assuming you are an intelligent person you should be aware of your own strengths and weaknesses, and by stating them will highlight to the employer what you are really made of. Give Specific Examples You’d be shocked at how many candidates, when asked, can’t relay one specific example about something they have done. Immediately, this will place you a few steps back. Interviewers want to hear how you dealt with a tricky situation, met sales targets, or dealt with tight deadlines. So many candidates state there are too many examples to give one, or that they can’t think of one; this is not beneficial as employers want to see you give exact, live examples on how you made the difference in the workplace. SOS recommends working examples such as times you’ve been a team leader and what you did when there was a problem, an example of how you took your initiative, managed to prioritise your workload or met stringent targets. If you work in sales how to close a deal is imperative along with live examples of figures and timeframes. If you’re a Manager specific examples of disciplining, leading by example, reporting to Directors or handling difficult situations will make you shine. See this as the opportunity to give evidence to the things you’ve stated on your CV. Examples of your performance really will make you a cut above the rest as you are demonstrating to the employer how you can make a difference to them. Last but by no means least… Thank the interviewer for their time and for seeing you. This is of the utmost importance. You’d do very well to back this up with outlining your ambitions to join the company so remind them why you’re interested in the role and what makes you a suitable candidate; even ask a couple of questions to demonstrate your level of interest and how keen you are. Employers appreciate you being keen so don’t be afraid to ask how long it might take to hear any news. The final factor is to leave on a high note saying that you would really like the position if you were offered it. This will reinforce your ambitions and desire to the employer and make that all-important lasting impression! If you’re looking to talk to somebody or to develop your career talk to SOS today. The SOS team are experienced, professional and approachable.... they’d love to hear from you! 01202 292888 jobs@sosrecruitment.co.uk www.sosrecruitment.co.uk 181-183 Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth

SPORT T ALK BOURNEMOUTH FOOTBALL REFEREES’ SOCIETY History The Referees’ Association was officially formed in the 1880’s in the north and midlands of England. As the formation of local leagues spread across the country, more and more RAs were formed. The Bournemouth Football Referees’ Society (BFRS) was formed in 1923 and in 2013, we will be celebrating our 90th Anniversary. The Society is aimed at Referees in Bournemouth and the surrounding areas. We are members of the Referees Association and are affiliated to the Hampshire Football Association. We have members who have or do officiate on the local Bournemouth FA Saturday and Sunday Leagues, the Bournemouth Youth Leagues, the Sydenhams Wessex League, the Southern and Western Leagues right the way up to the Premiership, as well as officiating on the FA Cup Final! Members are encouraged to come along and learn from other members’ advice and guidance. We are all here to help each other. If you are not a member, you are welcome to come along and talk to our Secretary about joining. Many of the top referees, including Howard Webb and Mike Riley, have put part of their success down to being active members of the Referees’ Association (RA) and have received help and guidance along the way. Keith Stroud, Level 1 Football League Referee (who was Assistant Referee in the 2003 FA Cup Final) had an interesting start to his refereeing career. “One of my first appointments was at the hallowed turf of Slades Farm, all was going well for the first 25 minutes, when a heavy challenge resulted in a mass melee. No amount of me blowing the whistle was having any effect as all 22 players were trading blows. So I picked up the ball and returned to the changing rooms. They were still at it
as went back to my car and set off home! With that as a start, the Bournemouth RA has helped me to become the referee I am today. Upon joining Bournemouth RA in 1987, I was welcomed with open arms by members young and old. They helped me through my first few months of refereeing with one to one mentoring, support and sometimes just an ear to bend. The RA is a place where referees meet, discuss and mull over match incidents, with all in attendance benefitting. Without the RA I would not have gained the knowledge and experience that has helped me to make my way up the promotion ladder. I would encourage all referees to join the RA so they are able to gain this invaluable knowledge and support which will assist them in achieving their own promotion ambitions.” Derek Nippard, Life Vice President of the BFRS and Referee in the 1978 FA Cup Final, in which Ipswich Town defeated Arsenal 1 – 0, was the first and last Cup Final Referee who took to the field of play after the final whistle to do a ‘Lap of Honour’ as it was his (and one of his assistants) last appointment after 11 years on the football league. Throughout his days on the Football League, he only dismissed three players and two of those were in one match! This was the infamous fight between Norman Hunter and Francis Lee, both England internationals, which followed their dismissal, all caught on camera by ‘Match Of The Day’.
How to become a Referee The Football Association still work on the old county boundaries and therefore the Bournemouth Area Football and Referees come under the jurisdiction of Hampshire FA, so an application to them would need to be made to register on a Basic Referees Training Course. On successfully completing the training course and a written examination on the
Laws of the Game, you will be a registered Level 9 referee. The next part of the initial training is to officiate 6 games and when this is successfully completed the referee will be promoted to Level 7 for Adults or Level 8 for youth referees. The Bournemouth Referees’ Society extend the invitation to these referees to help in the development of young and newly qualified referees, with the experience of members who have been there and seen most incidents that occur in the game. By using this experience the society hope that these referees will be able to go on to be the new Howard Webb. There are many reasons why people take up the whistle, some to keep fit, some to give something back to local football after they finish playing and others with an ambition to reach a high level of officiating but whatever the reason we hope that enjoyment is the ultimate outcome.
90th Anniversary Celebrations We are looking for all local Bournemouth Referees to be involved in the celebrations of the society throughout the 2013-14 season. We have commissioned a special 90th Anniversary Tie which will be presented to all members throughout the season. We are also in the process of arranging Special Guest Speakers to come and share their experiences and tales of their promotion trails to the higher levels of the referee pyramid. All referees will be able to learn from their mistakes and experiences and take away something to use in their games. These will be “Not to be missed” evenings and further details will be finalised in the near future. Anyone interested in joining the society should contact Brian Channing (Treasurer) on 07776 462967 or by email: brianchanning@sky.com www.clubwebsite.co.uk/bournemouthreferees

Hi Karl…what got you into bodyboarding? At the age of 13, I was supposed to be going on a skiing trip with my school. Something just drew me to try bodyboarding, I cancelled my skiing trip, lost my deposit and with the Can you tell us about any wins/comps you remaining money, I went out and bought a have been part of? board and wetsuit and never looked back! I came 4th in the South Coast Championships when they used to put Tell us a bit about your bodyboarding it on years ago. I came 8th on the British history? tour a few years ago. I have had coverage I have been bodyboarding for 20 years now, in magazines and a video but these days I living on the south coast you have to put the much prefer surfing a spot between mates effort in to get waves. Many decisions in my and getting that competitive edge amongst life have been based around the sport, where us. I live, what University I chose and my career. As the swell here can be inconsistent, it has You can be seen to Drop Knee, (as meant I have travelled to get the waves I pictured) can you tell us a bit about that? want. I’ve surfed in California, Ireland, France, There are two ways you ride a bodyboard; Canary Islands, Brazil, Indonesia, Portugal Prone and Drop Knee. Drop Do you find that working for ‘Animal’ has influenced your passion for the lifestyle? Definitely, I feel very privileged to be working in the industry I love! Even when it’s flat, it keeps me fully absorbed in the scene. It is a lifestyle and it’s something we are very passionate about.
well
Knee is one knee down, one leg up. This is closer to surfing as you would on a surfboard. That’s what I love about bodyboarding, the versatility of it. I can surf a barrelling wave on a shallow reef or a fat beach break and still have lots of fun, whilst always being able to push my technical ability.
Where do you like to bodyboard locally? I surf Bournemouth Pier when we get good SW swells and strong winds. When the conditions are good, I surf a local reef with a top bunch of other bodyboarders. What’s a good surf report to use for the area? Magicseaweed.com seems to be the easiest way to tell if there are waves. You just can’t beat the old fashion way of looking at low pressure systems and gaining local knowledge though. What’s your favourite hot spot in the surrounding area? A local reef.
Finally, what’s the best place you’ve ever bodyboarded? That’s really tough; all of the places I have listed can be world class on the day. I think it has to be Indonesia though. It’s cheap, warm, you can surf in board shorts all year round and it has consistent world class waves that are great for bodyboarding.
Thanks very much for talking to us, Karl and we wish you continued success with your work and sport.

J
en Ridley is one of the UK’s first ever paraplegic BKSA recognised powerkite instructors. After a serious sporting accident left her paralysed, Jen has become an inspiration to many by overcoming challenges and pursuing her passion for kiting on land and sea. She is now a Strength & Conditioning coach, Specialist of Physical Activity for Children and an instructor for the UK’s first kite-sports charity, Kite Right, for people with physical, mental health or learning challenges.
Thanks for talking to us, Jen. What made you want to get back to sport following the accident and how long was it before you could do this? Sport was part of my rehabilitation as a child in hospital, I went on to play the standard sports such as basketball and tennis but never fully got ‘that feeling’ we all get from the outdoors and the water. What was it about kitesurfing that made you want to get into it? Kitesurfing was something I watched and it instantly made me fall in love with how the kites moved, how the people looked hypnotised, how they moved with such grace and of course the pretty awesome tricks that were being pulled. Which do you prefer and why, land kiting or sea? It depends on what I want to get out of the session, if I want an adrenaline fuelled speed hitting session then it’s my buggy. If it’s a chill out session then it’s lash a little kite up and static fly like a big kid with a new toy. If it’s climbing over a hurdle and really achieving something then it’s the water. What has been the biggest obstacle you have overcome so far physically or mentally? The biggest obstacle I have overcome is possibly other people’s perception of me. Yes I am disabled, I cannot walk, stand or run... but there’s a very good chance I could beat someone on a 400m sea swim or have the sheer strength to lift my own
26
bodyweight in the gym. It’s a nice feeling once you know that that person gets it, they get that being on wheels doesn’t mean I am different it just means I do things in a different way. Sometimes you meet people that will never change their opinions and still think that a person with a disability should be in home! That’s crazy! Others have a completely different view; they care about people, and don’t have the preconception that a person is different with a disability. Tell us about the equipment you use to kitesurf and have you been involved with the development of it? For the land I have a Libre V-Max II Buggy which has been adapted so the foot pegs are attached to the frame so I can rest my legs. I have a steering system on the top so I can steer with one hand while flying. I use an ION Nova Harness which is awesome for the core stability and spinal support it gives me. My Kites are Flysurfer Virons 2m, 4m and 6m. I also use a Ozone C4 in 8m and 12m. My kites, bars handles etc have not
been adapted at all. The only thing that has been changed slightly is the safety system which is attached differently in the water. Do you have a sporting role model? My sporting role models...hmm well when I started this reply I couldn’t narrow it down to one so here we go... I would have to say at the moment Sophie Chevalier of KiteSista because she is living her dream and not letting anyone get in her way, her and her boyfriend’s given me amazing support and helped me believe in me. Karri Schibevaag is also up there in role models as she’s given me some kind words of advice that could only come from another female kite surfer who is also out of the normal box. Christophe Martin is a paralysed kiter who has made huge steps in making this sport open so we can all kite together, he is French. I don’t speak French, so you can imagine the Skype conversations with sign language! Also Al Mennie, who is a big wave surfer here in Northern Ireland who surfs waves that you cannot appreciate unless you see it with your own eyes, I have

You are an instructor and ambassador for local charity, Kite Right. Tell us why you chose to work with them? I choose to work with KiteRight because they have similar views to me; they have a will to make kiting open for all. Gary the CEO is a great guy and understands firsthand what it’s like to need to kite to keep everything OK and he understands how important this is for people’s rehabilitation from physical and mental injuries. I think the charity will go from strength to strength all the time growing as one big epic community. How does it feel when you see someone you have trained enjoy the same freedom you have when they are kiting? It’s like the feeling you get when you complete something that has taken blood, sweat and a few tears – there’s that little, choked up feeling... It makes me relive what I went through to get to where I am today, it makes me appreciate what I have, and it makes me stoked knowing we have someone else to kite with. Thank you to Jen for speaking to us and we wish you continued success with your sports.

WD WA NAME Georgia Poole SPORT Netball My name is Georgia Poole I am 17 years old and I am currently a student, studying for my A-levels at Parkstone Grammar School. Alongside my school work, I play Netball for Poole Netball Club. I train every Thursday at Talbot Heath School in Bournemouth and regularly play local and regional games on weekdays and weekends.
What got you into netball? Poole Netball Club which is my local team trained at my middle school. When watching them train and play after school I instantly wanted to get involved, I have now been playing for Poole Netball Club for almost 10 years! What position do you play? I mostly play Centre but sometimes play at Wing Attack too. What is it like to Captain a team and what is the hardest part? I do love being a captain, especially with the help and support everyone gives at Poole Netball Club. I’m so proud to say I have captained my team ‘Poole Jewels’ to so many victories over the years, however, it is sometimes a struggle to balance being a figure of authority within the team and having a friendship with all my team mates, I would say that is the hardest part. Do you take part in any other sport? When I was playing junior netball, I juggled swimming, football and a bit of gymnastics but netball was always my favourite, so now I just concentrate on that one. I go to the gym now a lot if that counts!
OVER THE YEARS POOLE HAVE WON ALMOST EVERY TOURNAMENT IT HAS ENTERED, AND IT IS A HIGHLY RECOGNISED CLUB ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.
How do you balance studying with your training? I am generally quite organised. I plan everything out so when I have training and matches, I can fit my school work in between. It’s hard but manageable.

Tell us about any competitions or wins you’ve had at Poole Netball Club From its origin as an after school club to presently, a Silver Cap Nationally placed Netball club, Poole has entered Tournaments all over the country. We have travelled to Manchester, Birmingham and Nottingham. My team has entered the Nationals Club Competition four times and has been placed in the top six all four times, 2008 runner–ups and 2010, 3rd place. We do weekend tournaments every year at Pontins Holiday Park in Brean Sands, where a two day competition is held. It is entered by some of the best teams in the country. It’s incredibly fun and a great social event with the whole club being involved. Over all the years of going to the tournament, my team ‘Poole Jewels’ have won it twice and been runners up twice so it’s been a successful competition for us. The second weekend tournament that Poole Netball Club get involved with is Nottingham City Tournament which we have won twice. We have also regularly been to day tournaments held in Essex and the Hertfordshire area. As you can tell we do a lot of travelling! What has been the highlight of your netball playing so far? My highlight has to be coming runners up at National Club Championships in 2008, we missed out on first by a close margin to Oldham Netball Club who have been unbeaten in the competition for many years. But, it was still an amazing experience as we were playing against teams that were a year older; the National Clubs competition is for U14 teams and our whole team was still U13! What are your hopes for the future? I hope that our regional side at Poole Netball can be promoted to premier league within the near future and personally my goal is to go on playing for Poole Netball Club, play for my university, superleague and even represent my country playing for England Netball. Thank you for talking to us, Georgia and best of luck with your future.

Age: 24 I have been working within the fitness industry for nearly 5 years now and have built up a very successful and broad client base. I am a driven individual who likes to motivate and push all my clients in the right direction to achieve optimum results in short periods of time. With every session done with me I can promise variation of exercises and training methods to keep you on the right track for reaching your goals!
Age: 25 Jamie, has been one of the most successful PT’s in the local area for the past 5 years. After playing football professionally for AFC Bournemouth he went on to become a PT and play semi professional football along side it. Since then he’s done over 5000 sessions, changing people’s lives for the best along the way. He’s trained every type of person from morbidly obese clients to anorexic and from clients with arthritis to clients that are overcoming cancer. He’s done all this using the most modern types of equipment in the industry today such as kettle bells, ropes, TRX bands, steel bells and VIRP’s just to name a few. This makes Jamie’s training a lot more enjoyable than your basic gym session and he’ll make sure you reach the goals that you set together.
Age: 25 Since starting my personal training business in 2009, I have been one of the busiest trainers in the South-West regularly delivering close to 60 sessions a week. In this time I have worked with a diverse client base inclusive of many International athletes. To qualify as a Fitness specialist I have a CPD and academic record that includes an MSc in Sports Science Strength and Conditioning and a BSc (Hons) in Sports Management. Building on my previous and current Strength and Conditioning work in elite Athletics, Football and Rugby Union, I currently lecture on sport at Solent University and teach industry recognised fitness qualifications.
Age: 24 As a young keen fitness enthusiast, Mike followed his dream to become a personal trainer and start to help other people transform their lives. As a personal trainer, each one has a speciality way they like to train and train others. For me it’s all about raising the heart rate for maximum calorie burn, if I don’t leave the gym in pools of sweat and needing to use the lift to get down stairs then I know in myself that I haven’t worked to my very best. A high number of my current clients initial goals were to first and foremost reduce their body fat percentage and then gain a desired amount of muscle mass to look toned and have almost an athletic look. I can promise that if you sign up for personal training with me that you will lose a stone in 6 weeks with 2 sessions a week and keeping to your nutritional plan I will set you!

BULLET PROOF
YOUR CORE When you talk about training your core, most people automatically think of 6 pack abs and then say they need to do a billion crunches 18 times per day to get visible and strong abs. This is not the way to get a core that looks great and provides a strong support for your back. A six pack is also heavily dependent on your body fat percentage, which realistically needs to be in the 10-15% range to start seeing abs. Your core should be thought of as the link between your hips and shoulders; it should be strong enough to transmit the high forces created during sport, training and life, without weak links that can cause injury and reduced performance. It should be trained as a unit and in many directions, not just the bits you can see down the front; especially as many people have chronic back pain caused by doing hundreds of crunches and sit ups every time they train.

Russell is the owner of The Conditioning Centre and is currently the Head Strength & Conditioning coach for sportBU at Bournemouth University. Every week Russell coaches hundreds of athletes from beginners to Great Britain representatives and members of the public to improve their sporting performance and reach their training goals. His dedication to improving his athletes and his personal drive to get better every day make him a coach who leads from the front and gets results. Here are the 3 ways that I train my members and athletes to ensure that their core is bullet proof and looks great; Heavy Carries 1 DUMBBELL CARRY: Hold one DB to your side, keep a small space between your arm and your hips and walk while making sure you keep your shoulders straight and body upright with no lean. If you do this right your obliques on the opposite side to the DB will be on fire and your shoulders, arm and deep muscles around your hips will get some good work too. Try using a DB between 15-50kg for lengths of 20-40m each side. Anti Extension/Rotation People always want to do crunches and Russian twists, but the problem with those is that they can irritate your discs in your back and cause pain. If you’re hurt you can’t train and you don’t get anywhere. So I prefer to train to keep the trunk straight while under large forces. Some examples are:
32
2 ROLL OUTS: Kneel on a pad holding a
roller, roll forwards while keeping your back straight and abs and glutes tight. Roll until you can no longer hold your core still or until you’re out straight then pull back. Don’t go so far that your back bends and you feel your lower back, as your core is no longer taking the force so it’s pointless. Try 6-10 perfect reps for 3 sets.
3 PALLOF PRESS: Stand side on to a cable
column with a cable or band held at your chest. Squat a little and hold your position upright. Push the band until your arms are straight and hold for 3 seconds. Make sure to not let the band twist you round. You should feel this all round your core and also legs and shoulders. 8-10 reps each side for 3 sets. Functional Movements These are more varied movements to test your core while performing a large movement.
4 SANDBAG GET UP: Lying on your back
place a sandbag on your left shoulder, hold it there with your left hand and put your right hand out to 45° from your body and have your left leg bent with your foot on the floor. Sit up and out to your right elbow then straighten the right arm so you’re sat upright with the right arm on the floor. Now lift your hips using your left leg and right arm and bring your right leg through to a half kneeling position. Stand up. Reverse that process and you have done one rep. Try 3-5 per side with a 5-10kg bag to start with. There you have a great way to get a strong, stable and functional core that prevents back pain and looks great. You don’t have to completely stop the crunches, but try replacing a few sets with these exercises and see how much better you feel.

USE A PRE-SHOT ROUTINE TO SHARPEN YOUR GAME “I’ve had the opportunity to play with many amateur golfers over the years in Pro Ams and Corporate days. One thing that has always struck me is that a huge percentage of amateurs have inconsistent, or no preshot routine. A pre-shot routine is extremely important and is a simple way to add some consistency to your game in

a pressured situation. After engraving a routine over a period of time it will eventually become automatic, allowing you to concentrate on each shot with the piece of mind your consistent approach will stand up to under pressure. It is no coincidence all the best players in the world have developed a pre-shot routine they can rely upon. Find a routine that works for you, and suits your speed of play. Make sure it includes a practice swing and allows you to properly visualise the shot you’re about to play.”

HAVE A GO HERO MISSION NO. 7
We’ve recruited local nightclub owner, JOSH SIMONS to work through our list of challenges trying out some of the area’s best activities and to be our ‘Have a go hero’. Josh did well last month at Ippon Gym but we noticed some of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu moves looked like hard work, so we are turning up the heat and challenging him to increase his flexibility at Bikram Yoga, Boscombe. How did you feel after your session with Jeff Lawson?
I felt like Chuck Norris’ slightly overweight love child. It was intense. Jeff was a great coach and his system is a dynamic way of getting in shape. Have you ever tried any yoga before?
I have actually attended Yoga classes before. I lasted a few days, couldn’t hack it. The chance of me touching my toes is minimal, let alone wrapping my legs around my head. Have you done any preparation?
I have been meditating for a few days to try and get my mind in gear. I’m determined to last the full hour. AFTER… How did you find it?
The heat, the stretches, watching middle aged women do things that I couldn’t do. Hard to take. I got through it though.
It felt quite warm just watching you in the studio. Can you describe what it was like and what would you compare the heat to?
It was like working out in a sauna. It was very tough, however, I loved it. Some of those positions looked hard, did the warmth help limber you up?
It did. Seeing some of the other more experienced people in the class was inspiring. There was a woman there in her 50’s doing the splits and all sorts. I pushed myself through the whole class purely down to her making me feel inadequate. Did you feel relaxed?
Not until it had finished. I can certainly see the benefits though. It gets the endorphins going. You feel refreshed and relaxed in the mind once the class has finished. Would you recommend Bikram Yoga to increase fitness and strength?
100%. If you can go to Bikram 3-4 times a week you will see huge benefits mentally and physically. I’m signing up to the 30 day challenge. I’ll be living in a monastery with the monks this time next year. Well done, Josh for completing this month’s challenge. Look out for next month’s issue where we will be checking out Josh’s skills on the green at Iford Golf Club.

The success of modern-day BMW Roadsters is rooted in the rigorous execution of a concept, a process which has left its mark on both the design and the driving properties of each car and is clearly recognisable in the new BMW Z4. The sweeping bonnet, long wheelbase, low beltline and low-slung rear end play a more vivid and uncompromising part in shaping its appearance than is evident with any of its segment rivals. The low seating position just ahead of the rear axle gives the driver and passenger a particularly intense experience of the longitudinal and lateral forces working on the rear wheels. This sense of being “part of the car” also allows the driver to grade the amount of power he’s feeding through the rear axle with sensitivity and precision. That’s the recipe for roadster feeling, BMW-style.

Name: Will Kay Work: Sales Manager at Health-on-Line Sport: Bournemouth Bobcats/Muay Thai Boxing
had to find a gym that opened at 6am to accommodate this. Work for me comes first, and therefore this has to take priority over training.
Health-on-Line was established in 2000 as an innovative company within the Private Medical Insurance sector – specialising in allowing the consumer to tailor a product to suit their requirements and budget – a feature originally common in other insurance markets, but not PMI. Since then, Health-on-Line has grown from strength to strength, now encompassing around 200 staff in their Bournemouth offices. Health-on-Line have also recently been acquired by AXA PPP, providing exciting new opportunities and ventures to explore.
It requires exactly the same mentality to be successful in sales as it does to be successful in sport, it boils down to how much you really want it? I hear guys sometimes say they can’t find time to train, but I work a 45-50+ hour week, holding down a relationship and two dogs which often need attention! I find solutions and make sacrifices, rather than finding excuses and giving up…
Where do you work and what is your role in the business? I’ve worked at Health-on-Line for close to 6 years now. Originally, I started as a sales consultant selling Private Medical Insurance on the phones and then progressed to running a team of 25 agents. I now manage the PMI sales floor at Health-on-Line, which consists of around 100 consultants. I am responsible for coaching, motivation, recruitment and sometimes, when I find time, getting on the phones to prove that I still have what it takes! Tell us about what sports you take part in? I play American Football for the Bournemouth Bobcats, #62, Defensive Nose Tackle. I’m basically one of the big guys that breaks through the line of big guys on the other team (offence) and tries to stop the running backs from making any yards, or hopefully sacking their QB (quarter back) or driving him down field so they make negative yards. How do you find juggling your working career with your training? Going up against the big guys means that I need to train hard in the gym during the little free time I have, in order to win the battle! Ideally, I need to be in the office for 7.30-8am so recently I’ve
BUSINESS SPORT The Game is talking to local business men and women who have passion for sport as well as their career to find out how they get the balance between the two.

Where do you workout to keep fit? I train in the gym every morning during the week, whilst on Saturdays, I train for 4 hours with the team and if I can I like to squeeze in 12 rounds on the punch bag on a Sunday too. I recently took up Muay Thai Boxing for fitness, and now I hit the punch bag every morning to warm up before I hit the weights. Weights for me are sport specific so mostly big compound explosive movements, jump squats, clean and press, bench and dead lifts. I also like to get my bike out when I can and cycle over to Old Harrys Rocks that’s a good burn out! Do your work colleagues support your sports activities? I’ve recruited some players from Bobcats to work at Health-on-Line and I’ve also recruited some of my colleagues at Health-on-Line to come and play American Football! We generally get a good turnout of spectators at home games, especially if it’s a nice summers day! Do you find physical activity a good stress buster after a hard week’s work? Since working in my current sales role, I’ve learnt that you really need to be motivated to achieve anything in life. My job is very demanding and mentally challenging, therefore it’s easier when I can unleash all my aggression on the football field and in the gym endorphins are my best friend! I’ve learnt a lot through playing American Football about discipline that I’ve used to my advantage at work and vice versa. How can people get involved? We’re always looking to recruit new players, and general team management assistants, we even let Rookies come along and train with us for free for the 1st few sessions. For more info find us on the Bournemouth Bobcats Facebook page or www.bobcats.org.uk

Congratulations on your promotion, AFC Bournemouth from us all at
e h t p U
S E I R R E CH End of season thoughts from SUPER FLETCH It has been a long time coming but for only the second time in the club’s history, AFC Bournemouth is a Championship club. Saturday 20th April 2013 is a day that will remain with me until the day that I die. For us to break the club record of seven straight wins by recording our eighth successive victory, coupled with other results going our way; it was as if someone up there wanted us to go up and knew this was our time. As we sat in the changing room after the game awaiting the delayed Doncaster result, the mix of emotions everyone felt was hard to sum up, and when we saw that score come through, it was sheer euphoria. The supporters and everyone connected with AFC Bournemouth deserve a lot of credit for this achievement, as we have all pulled together to make the dream a reality. We have all been through a lot – the ups and downs, trials and tribulations of administration, near promotions and relegations – there is never a dull moment at Dean Court but this is one that should be collectively treasured forever. I would be lying if I was to say that personally the gloss hadn’t been slightly taken off the achievement, as I haven’t playing as many minutes on the pitch as I would have liked. But to have been part of such a talented squad and within such a fantastic dressing room has been an honour. In my 24 years of professional football, this the best squad I have been part of, and I am proud to have played my part be it on or off the pitch. I don’t think many men can say they spent their 41st year playing in a team pushing for promotion to the second tier of English football!

SCENES FROM SATURDAY 20TH APRIL WHEN THE CHERRIES GAINED PROMOTION TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP
As I write this, we still have to play Tranmere Rovers so it is not quite job done. The gaffer and Jason have instilled a mentality and work ethic in us that means only the best is good enough, so while we are ecstatic to be promoted, we are now focusing all our efforts on being crowned npower League One champions at Prenton Park.
