FORD’S FINAL ASPIRATION As we go to press this month, Poole Pirates were embarking on their “post season” campaign in the Elite League play-offs and boss Matt Ford admitted, “After the sort of adversity we have had to overcome this season, the fact we are in the play-offs feels like we have won a trophy! It’s akin to a victory to get so far but we have to acknowledge that over the season, our play-off opponents, Swindon, have been better than us; however the play-offs are all about the time and the moment.

PIRATES ASSAULT ON THE BLUE RIBAND FRIDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2013 The Blue Riband is famously awarded to ocean liners competing to cross the Atlantic in the fastest possible time, but here in Dorset, speedway followers have associated that name with one of the sport’s most prestigious individual contests of them all, “The Poole Blue Riband”. The invitation event has always attracted the attention of followers nationwide as a host of International shale stars, often only ever seen together on an occasion such as a World Championship, descend on Poole’s Wimborne Road stadium for one night only. This year, that night is Friday 11th October when Poole Speedway supremo, Matt Ford reignites the classic contest after a twelve year wait. The Riband was last won in 2001 by the then legendary multi World Champion and Poole Captain, Tony Rickardsson who headed a stunning Pirates’ top three on the rostrum being flanked on the night by Gary Havelock and Grzegorz Walasek who filled the minor places. This year, the Pirates will launch another full scale assault on the prize with current captain, Australian, Darcy Ward amongst the favourites to stand on the top step on his UK home track, but with fellow Pirate and former World Champion, Greg Hancock from the USA also in the line-up, it will be no walk in the park for any of this years’ hopefuls.

Danish sensations, Niels Kristian Iversen and Kenneth Bjerre return to the track where Iversen topped the qualifiers for the 2014 World Championship Grand Prix series last month and where Bjerre netted a faultless maximum in his league visit just weeks ago. Former Poole favourites, Davey Watt and Bjarne Pedersen will also provide some robust opposition on a track that is just like home to them but, with current Pirates Maciej Janowski, and Thomas H Jonasson also in the field there will be lots for the local fans to cheer for. The ocean going accolade has been around since the 1800s, however, Pirates’ track based version was only instituted in 1970 as a replacement for the long running Johnnie Thompson Memorial Trophy that began in 1955. The very first Blue Riband winner was Barry Briggs who led a host of successors to the throne such as Ole Olsen, Bruce Penhall and a flood of Poole heroes including four time winner Malcom “Super Simmo” Simmons who still holds the record for the most wins. This year will mark the 30th staging of the event and is likely to bring the curtain down on Pirates season which has been dogged by injury and misfortune. The Pirates still aim to go out in style though with the evening being marked by live music and a firework finale to round off an occasion fit for champions.

We found this to our cost in 2010 and again last season when we finished top of the Elite League table, but were beaten in the final.” he reflects. “This year we go into the play-offs in a different guise . . . as the underdogs and without a doubt, it’s going to be an intense couple of speedway meetings. Ford was hoping to see Wimborne Road bursting at the seams for the semi-final showdown on 30th September. “Poole Speedway on play-off nights is something very special in terms of atmosphere and I am sure this year will not disappoint. We have witnessed all sorts of roller-coaster emotions here in recent years at this stage of the season so, if we can push through to the grand final, the next chapter is likely to be right up there with them all.” The two winners from the semis will meet in the title determining grand final to be staged, over two legs, on Monday, October 7th and 14th.

Having served as official massage therapist for AFC Bournemouth, Amanda has experience in dealing with patients as varied as top sportspeople to the general public and with an outstanding knowledge of human anatomy, we’re delighted with her offer of specialist advice in these pages.

The Problem

Amanda shared an issue faced by a client who’s a competitive swimmer, surfer and wake boarder.

The Patient

Amanda’s Solution In my clinic I see both swimmers and non-swimmers who have occasional or chronic neck pain. I have not found that master swimmers have more neck pain than others, however, faulty stroke technique may aggravate existing neck pain. It’s a chicken and egg situation, if there is a weakness in the muscle groups involved, this will cause faulty stroke technique and vice versa.

The reason why the calcification develops is unknown but the most common assumption is that it forms secondary to a piece of the tendon that dies off because of bad blood supply in the area right where the rotator cuff inserts on to the humerus. Other theories suggest that it might be secondary to small tears that happen in the cuff or even secondary to impingement, which is the case with Rachael.

This then led to a weakness in the shoulder muscles which then caused her shoulder blade to start winging. (This means that the shoulder blade looks like it’s coming away from the ribs and looks like a wing on the back) With Rachael Amanda used Deep Tissue Massage to release off the muscles that were initially restricting her shoulder from rotating correctly, namely the muscles in her neck. We then worked on a combination of both deep tissue techniques as well as strengthening exercises to get the scapular back in place and improve on her swimming technique. The calcification will continue to come and go however she knows now how to manage it with her exercises and if she keeps on top of her strength training this should help ease the calcification.

If you think this article applies to you then please do not hesitate to contact Amanda on 07789810752 for a FREE 20 minute assessment

Rachael Potter (32), is a swimming coach and the owner of Bubbles Swim School and is a competitive swimmer in Dorset and represents GB masters. She was 1st for the 1500m main event for her age group in the master and 2nd in GB master for 400m and 800m. Her open water event pier to pier (1.4 miles) she completed in 27 minutes and came 7th overall. Rachael is due to compete again at the end of this year. Furthermore Rachael also cares for disabled children as a youth care worker. Bubbles Swim School 07810411490

Rachael came to see Amanda with a shoulder and neck problem. Amanda identified areas of weakness in Rachael’s shoulder and neck muscles by observing her swimming technique. Furthermore she was able to see that as a result of consistent rotation in the gleno-humeral (GH) joint of the arm (which is the arm socket) Rachael has developed calcification of the ligament at the AC joint of the arm. (Acromioclavicular Ligament) … which is one of the ligaments that attaches the clavicle onto the GH joint. Furthermore, her pain in her neck is as a result of the neck muscles overworking causing a lot of tension on the cervical vertebrae in the neck. Rachael uses her powerful Trapezius muscle (which attaches from the bottom of the skull into the ribs) as well as the powerful Latissimus dorsi muscle in her back when she lifts up her patients as a youth worker. These muscles are naturally strong as a result of her swimming; however the deep compartment muscles aren’t, hence her injuries.

Essential Information

• Strengthening up the deep compartment muscles is essential to take the pressure off the larger muscles. • When the deep seated breathing muscles are not being used properly then the neck muscles will do all the work. Ensure that you use your diaphragm in order to breathe effectively; this will give your body more oxygen and allow you to perform better in your everyday life and sports. And remember... Correcting your technique is not actually that difficult, but you do need to know what to look out for and, just as importantly, work diligently to improve in these areas. It’s advisable to work with a professional that can help you to identify what you personally need to work on and what muscle groups need strengthening. Our bodies require strength, agility and balance in order to perform at their best. If you’re struggling with poor technique in your own sport and you’re frustrated with your lack of progress, then give Amanda a call so she can help you to identify where the weak areas are and how to strengthen them up. Whatever your lifestyle and whatever your game... DO NOT LIVE IN PAIN!

INITIAL RETURN ON LIONS INVESTMENT EARLY DAYS, BUT IMPROVEMENTS START FOR BOURNEMOUTH RUGBY

This year’s summer preparation at Chapel Gate was different and more challenging than ever before for the senior players of Bournemouth Rugby Club. The performance ethos, communicated from his first week by new Director of Rugby Budge Pountney, quickly made its impression on the squad as they pounded through rigorous training sessions that tested them both physically and mentally. Apart from the work on the training ground, some tough pre-season friendlies stretched them still further. Games against Glamorgan Wanderers, Bedford Blues (a fully professional team from the Championship) and Sheffield Tigers presented a range of challenges. The Lions’ defensive strategy was tested to the full, the pace of play started to increase and good experience was gained across the squad. There were opportunities AWAY 3PM for new players to assert HOME 2.30PM themselves too. The significant AWAY 3PM investment in HOME 2.30PM coaching and training efforts produced its first pay-off in Bournemouth’s opening game of the new league campaign on 7 September. Taunton Titans travelled over from Somerset and, having finished a few

places higher than the Lions in National League Division 2 South last season, fancied their chances at Chapel Gate. It was to be a quiet coach ride home for them later. After a fairly even start, Taunton established a lead, but Bournemouth pegged them back to a mere 1 point advantage at half time, when the score was 13-14. The second half was nearly all Lions, who ran out deserved winners 42-21, completing 5 tries along the way. It was the superior Bournemouth fitness in the last twenty minutes that ensured a convincing victory in front of a very enthusiastic home crowd and their new mascot, Sam the Lion. The match contained a number of notable milestones: • Andy Graesser scored a try on his league debut • Scrum-half Sam Hardcastle extended his scoring record to 706 points, which included 135 tries • Alan Manning, the 1st XV captain, extended his league-career record of consecutive starts to 93 • Dan Pollard took his tally to 178 conversions • In the front row, Frazer Wilford played his 100th game for the club As Budge Pountney pointed out in the newly designed match programme “We want to make this a season of change for Bournemouth rugby” and it certainly seems positive so far. A further test for Bournemouth was again at home on 14 September, against London Irish Wild Geese, who were promoted last season. Despite some team changes through injuries, the Lions were comfortable winners 45-25. Their man-of -the-match Sam Hardcastle bagged four tries, and Dan Pollard had success with the conversions. The team now sits on top of National League Division 2 South, a position they will try to maintain in the next game at Exmouth.

Is Inadequate Protein Intake Effecting Your Health and Wellness? As one of your bodies’ essential macro nutrients together with carbohydrates and essential fats, protein is highly recognised in importance but often very misunderstood. Unknown to many, proteins which are made up of 20 small units or ‘building blocks’ called amino acids are stored in every cell of your body including the organs and glands. 11 of these amino acids are produced within the body and therefore labelled as ‘non-essential’. If the other 9 ‘essential’ amino acids which have to be sourced daily from foods such as cold water fish, high and medium purine meats (chicken, beef, liver) and dairy (eggs, yoghurt, milk) are consumed in the correct quantities, the proteins will help repair and build the bodies’ tissues, skeletal muscle and red blood cells. For these reasons alone, sufficient protein intake will therefore stimulate improvements in athletic performance, growth in adolescents, prevent autoimmune disease and additionally help build, skin, hair, nails and cartilage. To determine whether your daily protein consumption is adequate, take your body weight in pounds (Ibs) and multiply it by 0.4. In example, if you weigh 150 lbs and multiply by 0.4, you will need 60 grams of protein each day for optimum health. However this figure will vary greatly for different individuals dependent on their lifestyle and training goals, as outlined below. To many of the gym buffs out there, the below table might not be ground-breaking reading. It is more often the case that the inaccuracies and FAQ’s surrounding protein are not geared around a reduced intake, but instead on over-consumption. With this in mind, let’s clear up one frequently asked question (FAQ). Can consuming too much protein lead to serious health conditions? The answer to this unfortunately is yes. Some of the linked health conditions

include high cholesterol, high blood pressure (HBP) and gout. How? Well these conditions occur as there are often high levels of saturated fats in most animal proteins and full fat dairy products. This in-turn raises bad ‘LDL’ cholesterol levels, blocks vessel walls and therefore links protein to the before-mentioned cardiovascular diseases such as HBP. An over-consumption of protein is defined as more than 35% of your total daily calories. As shown in table 1, consumption at this high a level is found typically in bodybuilder’s weight training 3 to 5 times a week specifically looking to add muscle mass or ‘bulk’. For decades bodybuilding folk law has dictated that it is safe and ‘advantageous’ to consume up-to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight when in a ‘bulking’ phase. To put this theory to test researchers at Kent University (2002) tested daily protein intake amongst two separate control groups, one group consumed 1.4 grams per kg of body weight with the other consuming 2.4 grams. In their results the researchers interestingly found no significant difference in body composition and protein synthesis levels (amount of cells which build protein). A further study by Hoffman et al., (2006) mirrored these results, finding across a 12 week resistance program no significant strength, body composition or hormonal changes amongst 23 strength and power athletes following a daily protein intake of >2.0 grams per kg body weight, in comparison to two other groups consuming a lower intake (1.0-1.4 grams and 1.6-1.8 grams). Despite no significant comparative difference between sample groups, these researchers did note composition and strength increases in each individual group from the beginning of their studies. In support of this a unique but now dated trial with weightlifters by Dragan et al., (1985)

Based on the current literature adhering to the guidelines in table 1 and, the 35% rule for bodybuilders would still be the safe recommendation for all non-athletes to maintain health and wellness when increasing their protein intake. FLIXX

WE’VE PICKED A SPORTS RELATED FILM FOR OUR LOCAL FILM EXPERT TO VIEW AND CRITIQUE. DAN MCRAE HAS WORKED AS A VISUAL EFFECTS ARTIST ON BLOCKBUSTERS INCLUDING STAR WARS AND THE DARK KNIGHT AND WE’VE SET HIM UP WITH ANOTHER GREAT FILM TO REVIEW WITH A BEER AND POPCORN.

RUSH (2013) Who doesn’t love a good car chase? Whether it’s Steve Mcqueen in Bullet or Vin Diesel in The Fast And The Furious. The moment a film kick starts into first gear, spitting dust and smoke into the air as a souped up car wheel spins away from an impending rival, our hearts start pounding with the pumping sound track. We lean forward a little in our seats and tense our bodies as we are pulled along for the ride. We are even happy to forgive; to a degree, a lame story line if the action is just right. But with ‘Rush’ directed by the mighty Ron Howard we have been fueled with both an equally intense story line and all those heart pumping action sequences. A rare quality in a film about cars. Based on the true events set in the 1970s high-class golden age of Formula One, this film focuses on our two hotshots, James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and his rival, Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl, recently known for his role as Frederik Zoller in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds). The British Hunt, a maverick playboy, whose personality gained as much attention as his on-track successes, is rivaled by the Austrian Lauda, who was the cynical ‘bad guy’ - a straight, fun-hating rich guy with eyes that never left the prize. The story chronicles their variably different personal styles, during and away from the races, their love affairs and the astonishing F1 season in which both drivers were willing to voluntarily risk their lives to become world champions, in a sport with no room for inaccuracy.

What I Thought... Rush takes a refreshingly positive approach to this sports genre. As the cars spin and shimmer on a rain covered F1 track, we never lose sight of what’s human behind the wheel. Morgan and Howard brillantly capture the exhilaration that comes from facing death, we Rush from scene to scene with a well oiled momentum, it feels slick and highly tuned, all whilst successfully bringing out the real-life personalities of Hunt and Lauda. I feel we have lost the energy and danger in F1 today and that this film whole heartedly resurrects an energy and threat of life. Who isn’t going to love this film?

Local girl, Louise Greenwood features in Ron Howard’s ‘Rush’ I am with a few modelling agencies and one of them called to see if I was available as I live near Poole. I was lucky that I was asked to do the significant race in Italy where Niki Lauda has his amazing come back race. The filming was at an airport in Hook, Hampshire which they made into a race track. Everyone had hair and make up to make them look like they were from the 1970s. Ron Howard was on his megaphone and I saw him walking in and out of scenes giving direction. He was very close to everyone, weaving in and out of us grid girls and the extras, leading the order of the scenes. It was great to see him in action! The grid girls were asked to feature in numerous scenes and stunt men were in the cars to start the cars and do a quick start. I was given the board - number 2 - which was for the racing driver who became Niki Lauda’s replacement after his accident. The girls were all given earplugs because the cars were so loud. In between filming, the 1970s ice cream van was giving out ice creams and lunch was provided for huge amounts of people. There was quite a ‘rush’ all round.

WARM UP

The warm up, everybody seems to hate it. It usually consists of either a few minutes on some random Cardio machine in the gym or, if you’re a man, putting your 1 rep max load on the bench press and trying to grind out as many reps as possible. It’s the part of the session that no one wants to do, but it is so important if you want to make progress and keep the injuries at bay. I’m hopefully going to show you a way to warm up that isn’t too boring, can be done quickly and will help develop some flexibility in the areas where most people are as tight as a camel’s ass in a sandstorm. The aim of a warm up is to prepare your body for the upcoming session and it should help you improve your tissue quality i.e. reduce tightness and knots in your muscles and prepare your joints and CV system for what is to come. Foam rolling is a great way to start this process. Most gyms seem to have foam rollers, they’re usually blue or orange cylinders about 45 cm long. You should think of these as a free sports massage, they are designed to help work out the tension in the muscles and if you find them agony to use then you really need to use them more often. There are 3 main areas to hit:

2

1

The Glutes: Position as shown in the picture (to roll your right glute). You want to roll over the full muscle area with long rolls at first, then when you find a particularly tender bit you should focus on that. Either hold your weight directly on that spot or do small rolls on it. Do about 30-60 seconds per side.

The Quads: The same principal applies as to the left. Get a good general roll over the full area then seek out the tight areas and focus on those.

Sumo Squat: Stand with your feet twice your shoulder width apart. Point them slightly outwards and squat. You should focus on sitting back, keeping the weight in your heels and keeping a straight back. Descend until you get a good stretch in your groin and stand up again. Lunge Complex: Start stood up with your hands over your head. Take a long step forwards with your right foot and slowly lower the left knee to the ground. You should feel a stretch down the front of the left thigh, hold that for a few seconds. Now put both hands on the floor inside the right foot and push your hips towards the ground, more stretching for the groin. Then rotate your left arm out and round to turn your chest to the left wall as far as you can go. This should loosen up the upper back and chest. Bring the arm back down stand up and repeat on the left leg.

4

3

The IT Bands: These are especially tight in runners, but most people need to loosen them as well. A tight IT Band can lead to all sorts of very common knee injuries so it’s really worth sticking with it and getting them sorted. Roll from the hip down the side of the thigh almost to the knee. Try to keep your thighs relaxed so the roller can do its work.

You should feel looser straight away and after a few weeks you’ll feel that rolling is a whole lot less painful and actually becomes enjoyable. Once the rolling is done its time to move onto the dynamic section of the warm up. I think it’s a good idea to get your general body temperature up, so feel free to do about 5 minutes on your favourite cardio machine. It could be a rower, treadmill or elliptical. It doesn’t really matter as long as you get a bit sweaty.

After this you can complete the following 5 exercises for 10 reps of each 16

36WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK

4

2

Lateral Lunge: Start stood up, and then take a big step to the left. Once the left foot touches the ground bend the left leg and sit back. The right leg should stay straight; you’ll feel a big stretch down the right inner thigh. Return to the middle and repeat. Once 10 reps are done complete a set on the right leg.

3

4 SESSIONS PER WEEK COACHING EVERY SESSION STRONGER FASTER FITTER MORE POWERFUL MONEY BACK GUARANTEE £60/MONTH MEMBERSHIP NO EXCUSES

£10 off Inchworm: From standing, bend over until your hands are on the floor, walk them out until you are holding a stretched press up position. At this point your body should be straight and your core tight to stop your hips dropping to the floor. Stay solid there for a few seconds. Then walk your feet towards your hands and raise your hips to the ceiling. Make sure you only do little ankle steps and keep your legs straight. Walk until you get a stretch in the hamstrings and calves, push the heels to the floor for a few seconds then walk the hands out and repeat.

Mixed Hand Press Up: This one is pretty simple. Just put your hands in varying positions and complete 10 press ups. You should try to get 4 different positions with rest in between. This will warm up the chest and shoulders. This whole warm up should take less than 15 minutes and will set you up for a great session, improve your movement and flexibility and should help reduce injuries in the gym. Remember to always warm up the specific exercise before you start it. For example if your work set is 80kg on the bench press you should do something like 10 reps with just the bar, 6 with 50kg, 3 with 70kg and then start your 80kg sets.

Rallye Sunseeker International (October 18/19), organised by the Southern Car Club, will be the last of six rounds of the 2013 MSA British Rallye Championship, of which it has been the opening round since 2011; it will also host the final round of the Mintex MSA British Historic Rallye Championship. The 2013 Rallye will feature a new Rallye HQ and Service Area for competitors and crews contesting in this year’s event. Rallye Headquarters will be the superb RNLI College that overlooks Poole Harbour and is the home of training for the charity’s lifesavers. This year’s event will also feature a new Service Park. Hosting the Service area for the event will be the Creekmoor Park and Ride Car Park, situated just two miles from Poole town centre. The four rallies making up this year’s event are Rallye Sunseeker

International, Rallye Sunseeker Historique, Rallye Sunseeker Challenge and Rallye Sunseeker National. It is estimated that the event brings over £1 million into the local economy each year, with obvious benefits for local businesses and the community at large. Chair of Poole Tourism Bruce GrantBraham’s thoughts on the forthcoming event: “Poole looks forward to hosting for the first time both the start and finish of this prestigious event. Our historic quayside, which overlooks the manufacturing base of the rally’s title sponsor - Sunseeker - is packed with restaurants and bars that will be an added attraction to the thousands of spectators expected to attend.” With the stunning and historic quay providing the unique backdrop for the Sky Sports TV coverage, both spectators at the venue and more than 10 million viewing the Rallye on TV are in for another thrilling event this year. SPORT TALK NETBALL

BY SUZI DIXON

THE SPARTANS THE TITANS

‘Back To Netball’ is a national campaign which aims to encourage ladies to get back on the court whatever their age. Since 2010 more than 30,000 women have started playing netball again. In Bournemouth, netball’s home is the Sir David English Sports Centre, near Castlepoint, where taster sessions run every Monday and tournaments take place every Wednesday. DLC Netball runs two teams - the Titans, sponsored by Greenslade Pleasure Boats Limited, and the Spartans, sponsored by Revolution Bournemouth. The new season started last month so if you want to rediscover your school days, search ‘DLC Netball’ on Facebook for details of a third team in the pipeline aptly called ‘The Trojans’.

SUZI DIXON SPEAKS TO SPARTANS CAPTAIN SALLY PEARCE AND TITANS CAPTAIN LAURA WINES. Sally Pearce: Like most people, I started playing netball at school and played at county level with Lytchett Minster, but by the time I got to university, I decided to focus on dance instead. As an adult it is very difficult to find dance classes that aren’t ballroom so I wanted to get back into netball. I found DLC Netball through word of mouth and am proud to be Spartans captain in our first season. In terms of fitness, you have to run around for 60 mins like a headless chicken, there are lots of sprints involved, so netball is excellent for the fat burning! Many firms have a corporate netball team - team-building is such an important part of netball, 12 strangers working together. There is also a massive social aspect too that comes with a team, meeting new people and making new friends. In terms of my plans for the season ahead… I just want to get stronger as the season goes on. It’s fascinating, throwing together 12 complete strangers and watching them grow and bond as a team. I just want everyone to feel they have done the best they can at the end of every game.

Laura Wines: I enjoy playing sport more than going to the gym. I enjoy tennis, volleyball, badminton, horse-riding and swimming. Anything where I can mix fitness and seeing my friends works for me but I am known to be very competitive… I first started playing netball at Lytchett Matravers Primary School. I was part of a very successful secondary school team and we won the county schools competition several times. Once I returned to Poole after university, my sisters and I decided to start our own team. I came up with the name Titans because I wanted a strong team name and we have always had a love for Greek mythology. We have progressed well as a team in the Bournemouth Netball League since we entered in winter 2012 from division 11 to division 9. The goal for this season is to work hard, play some good quality netball and hopefully start the summer in division 8! Due to the nature of the game, you are often changing between jogging and sprinting and interval training has proven to be useful in weight loss. If you want to keep fit and have fun, netball is where it’s at! PHOTOGRAPHY: SAMB PHOTOGRAPHY WWW.SAMBPHOTO.CO.UK

“NETBALL IS GREAT FOR THE MIND AS WELL AS THE BODY.

MENTALLY IT KEEPS YOU THINKING ONE STEP AHEAD, YOU NEED GOOD COMMUNICATION BETWEEN YOUR TEAM MEMBERS AND IT IS A GREAT WAY TO MEET NEW PEOPLE.”

ith the summer holidays now at an end, everyone is starting to wrap up warm ready to tackle the winter months, but here at Poseidon Kite School we’re dusting off our wetsuits and getting ready for the season we’ve been looking forward to all year. As the temperature drops and the storms become more frequent, Poole Harbour presents a festival of coloured sails and kites.

RIDERS ON THE WIND

When the leaves begin to turn a deeper shade of ochre, we start to get excited as that’s when low pressure weather systems start rolling in. With this change in pressure comes energy, that means more waves and a lot more wind, perfect for windsurfers, kite boarders and surfers dotted around the coast. This makes it the ideal time of year to experiment with watersports and book yourself in to learn some new skills, as the conditions are more consistent.

Kiteboarding and windsurfing are particularly popular in Poole Harbour as the Autumn months bring an average of three out of four weeks of wind as opposed to the lighter summer period that only offers one out of four. As a kite school we’re particularly busy, from cramming in early morning sessions with friends before work to taking out courses of beginners, we spend our days in the harbour more often than not with a kite or two.

‘WITH THE CHANGE OF SEASON, COMES A TIME TO HARNESS THE ELEMENTS…’ The sun has been and gone but don’t be put off by the colder weather, now’s the time to try something new and exciting. So throw on your cosiest jumper, possibly a rain mac as well and head down to the harbour to get involved.

FIT TIPS WITH VOLTZ

BEAT THE BLUES

As the clouds start to thicken and the daylight hours diminish, this time of the year sees a rise in many people feeling ‘the winter blues’ or suffering with recognised condition, SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Although, for many of us, winter is a happy time of the year with the festivities of Christmas, around 2 million people in the UK are thought to be affected by SAD and the figures are on the rise.

With workdays getting longer and more and more of us working shift patterns, our days and nights are lit with electric lighting reducing the regulation of our natural body clocks to interpret when it is daytime or nightime. In addition, being in the northern hemisphere, the winter daylight is short and married with the weather systems we experience in the UK during winter, has a direct consequence seeing more people suffering from SAD and depression. Taking part in sport is proven to boost your endorphins, the natural feel good hormones in your body. Any physical activities from a 20 minute walk around the block to competing in high paced team sports can lift your spirits as well as improving your general health and is highly recommended to help towards the battle against the blues. 22

5HTP SUPPORT FORMULA

Hundreds of years ago, three quarters of the population worked outdoors, whilst now, less than 10% of us work in natural light. In the winter months, this means an even lesser opportunity to be exposed to natural light with many people travelling to and coming home from work in the dark.

5HTP Support Formula from Voltz is a combination of Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Gingko Biloba, Fish Oil, 5-HTP, Chromium and Magnesium which helps to maintain a healthy mood, nervous system and sleep patterns. What Does 5HTP Plus Support Formula Do? • Helps to support a healthy mood and nervous system. • 5-Hydroxytryptophan or 5HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid from which the neurotransmitter serotonin is made. • Magnesium contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal psychological functions. • Chromium contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and to the maintenance of normal blood glucose and therefore energy levels. The 100% active ingredients are also free from artificial colouring, flavouring, sweeteners, fillers, binders and preservatives. The supplements combine high quality, easy to absorb nutrients with science, research and knowledge to support you in the area you need it.

Factors that can be affected by a reduced exposure to daylight include energy levels, appetite, sleep quality, emotions and weight. Someone who is lacking daylight can feel excessive tiredness and have low energy levels, have disrupted sleep and mood swings. There is a wide range of symptoms that someone who may have SAD might experience but many can be down to other conditions so it is important to consult your doctor for a correct diagnosis. Some symptoms of SAD include: • Lethargy and feeling like you can’t face the day ahead • Anxiety and depression • Disturbed sleep patterns • Find it hard to stay awake during the day • Lack of libido • Cravings for sugary foods which could lead to weight issues In addition to taking regular exercise, many people use supplements to help with their symptoms. 5HTP is used commonly to alleviate the symptoms of depression and research has shown the supplement increases the production of serotonin, a naturally occurring chemical in your brain. Serotonin helps manage our moods, stress and anxiety. Increasing the level of serotonin can help improve the symptoms mentioned above.

TAKING PART IN SPORT IS PROVEN TO BOOST YOUR ENDORPHINS, THE NATURAL FEEL GOOD HORMONES IN YOUR BODY.

VOLTZ WORKOUT OF THE MONTH

Tricep Dip

WITH MEL RAYNER

Mel Rayner is a local Personal Trainer and Boot Camp instructor. Mel trains individuals looking to tone up, lose weight, increase sporting performance and gain overall well being. Group sessions are indoors, clifftop and beachside. Mel’s passions include running and she is currently training for the inaugural Bournemouth Marathon happening this month.

The Plank

The plank is a fantastic exercise to execute at any time. ‘Fairly inexpensive’ - you ought to wear clothes if in public! Designed to strengthen your core this exercise is easy to master and you can swiftly improve. Start on your elbows and knees. Lift your knees up whilst keeping your body in a straight line. Imagine a line that goes from your shoulders to your ankles - don’t allow your bottom to lift up or dip down. Concentrate on keeping your stomach muscles tight. You will feel fatigue in your shoulders, quads, glutes and abs this now becomes a Compound exercise, (more than one muscle group working). However, it concentrates on your abs and is a humdinger!! Aim for 1 x 30 second plank with a 60 second break. Repeat 3 times. As you grow stronger, increase the plank time and decrease your recovery time.

The Tricep dip, once again is a versatile exercise that can be carried out in most situations. If you have a chair, kerb or bench you can do a tricep dip. You can do a Tricep Dip at 3 levels. Level 1. (Easiest) Securely place your hands, facing forwards on a box. (Make sure your hands are not greasy or sweaty) Placing your feet on the floor in front of you, bend your knees up a foot away from the box. Feet firmly on the ground. Lower your body and keep yourself upright by taking the weight on your arms. Allow your body to skim down in front of the box to as low as you can and using your arms simply push your body up. Level 2. As above but take your feet out a little straighter so in-between bent knees and straight legs. This will allow your triceps to take more weight and gain better returns.

Level 3. Take your legs out straight and dip your body down as low as you can. Fancy going larger? Grab a weight and safely place it on your lap. Fancy going larger still?? Place a weight on your lap and lift your right leg up for 10 reps and then change to your left leg and carry out 10 reps. Feeling like a superhero....raise your feet on a platform whilst doing the above and take your dips as low as you can. Abolish those bingo wings and carry out 3 sets of 15. Give yourself a 60 second break between each set. As you get stronger increase the reps and decrease the break.

The Game talks exclusively to Martyn Ashton, British and World Biketrial Champion, leading Animal team rider and mountain biking legend, about how he started out in his sport, what it’s like to break a world record and his passion to perform thrilling stunts to thousands of fans as part of the Animal WD-40 Action Sports Tour. Photography: Robin Kitchin Hi Martyn, thanks for talking to us… what got you into Trials riding? I started riding motorcycle Trials when I was eleven years old, following my two older brothers into the sport. I started practising Trials on bicycles at around the same time. When did you start competing and can you tell us about your first major win? I won the British Biketrial Championship in 93 , 94, 98 and 2001. I won the World Mountain Bike Trials Championship in 1995.

You’re currently the front man for the Animal WD40 Action Sports Tour… can you explain what you and the team do as part of the tour? I moved the emphasis of my riding from competitions to show performances around 1999. I started the Animal Tour with Animal in 2002 and it’s just grown from there. We now have athletes from several different action sports performing on the tour. It’s a really exciting show that’s fun to watch. We tour around the UK throughout the summer. We have also ventured further afield, into mainland Europe and Asia with the Tour. 26

Your sport requires incredible skill, control and balance…how do you prepare to focus on the stunts? It’s all about practice really. I’ve been professional for 20 years and spent 1000s of hours practising throughout my career. However I don’t ever feel like it’s training or practice. I focus on enjoying my riding and then the practicing and training just happens by default. You spend a lot of time with the rest of the team who are all amazing riders, what’s the banter like between you when you’re out on the road? It’s fair to say we have a lot of fun on the road, as you would imagine. The banter is non-stop really. We have lots of ‘in’ jokes that are running all the time. That usually bleeds into the shows themselves, so it isn’t unusual to see us laughing at each other during a performance. We focus on having a lot of fun, then the show is fun to watch. The tour show is superb to watch with some breathtaking action, can you describe how it feels performing in front of a roaring crowd? It’s such a great feeling when everything is working well and we are all riding at our top level. Before each show we always feel quite a lot of nerves, that’s because we want every show to be as good as it can be. You’re the current High Jump World Record Holder, how did you feel when you broke the record and how high you did you jump? I did the record on the ‘Record Breakers’ show on BBC. It was a cool show that I watched when I was young, so that felt great. Records are great, but the very nature of records is that they get broken, so I don’t pin too much glory on them. They are fun to do and bench mark of my riding at a certain time.

MEET THE PRO

MARTYN ASHTON

You suffered a serious back injury in 2003, do you have any issues with it now and how long was it following the accident before you were back on your bike? I broke my back attempting to learn backflips in 2003. It was a fluke accident as I was using a foam pit which is relatively safe, just unlucky I guess. The rehabilitation took around six months, it could have been a lot worse. As soon as I was back riding I concentrated on learning the backflip properly - I have them pretty dialled now, although it will always be a dangerous trick.

When you’re not on tour, what do you like to spend your time doing? I love the banter and fun we have. Sure there are times when each one of us is tired and grumpy (including me), but generally we spend a lot of time laughing. It’s great to be in a team with your best friends.

You rack up a lot of mileage with the many shows around the country…how do you cope with the travel and do you have a favourite spot on the tour? I enjoy the travelling part of the job. I use the time well, I’m a bit of a thinker so I can while away a long journey no problem. Favourite spot... I’ve had a lot of great stops on the tour, hard to single out one. It’s always great to visit Poole as it’s the home of Animal. I also enjoy the dates at Silverstone for MotoGP (I love motorcycles) and another favourite is Thorpe Park. What sort of tricks are involved between you and team… which one do you like the most and which one do you like watching the most? I love Blake Samson’s riding. He is really stylish and has some big tricks that I admire. This year we have added BMX and scooter riding from James Jones and Ryan McNamara - both those guys are bringing some amazing moves to the show that are incredible to watch live. When you perform, it all seems very well laid out with the van, rails and ramps, do you have any involvement with the planning of it? I have been quite involved with the progression of the show rig itself. Myself and Robin Kitchin (Tour Manager) are always discussing ways to add new riding to the show, that rider/manager collaboration is important, so all the riders are encouraged to offer ideas on how we develop in the future. Do you have a training regime to keep fit for the physical demands of the sport? During the Tour itself I’m in good shape from riding on the show, during the winter I just try to have fun on bikes generally, that keeps me motivated for the next season. Diet is an area of focus for me. This year I started eating a vegan diet (No animal products: meat, fish, dairy or eggs). That has had some amazing benefits and I’m enjoying it a lot. 28

What other sports do you like to get involved with? I love any sport, but my heart is with motorcycles. I love MotoGP. A few of the guys on the Tour are into Moto too so we spend a lot of time talking about that. You visit our area frequently during the tour and the quality ‘Road Bike Party’ film includes some familiar scenery around the vicinity. What do you think of Bournemouth and Poole and surrounding areas? I love the Bournemouth and Poole area. It is somewhere I’d love to live someday. The scenes from that area in RBP are some of my favourite too, hopefully we can do some more of that in the future, you never know. When you’re visiting the local area, what’s your favourite place to… Eat? Robin’s back garden for a BBQ Play? Most of the play takes place on the show equipment... Chill? I love to wind-down after shows. Usually a drink and chat in the hotel bar. Finally, sum up your sport in three words? Exciting... Exhausting... Entertaining... Thank you for talking to us, Martyn and we can’t wait to see you and the team back soon.

Since our interview with Martyn, he was involved in a life changing accident but he still wanted the interview included in this month’s issue. If you would like to find out more about the accident and keep track of Martyn’s progress, you can follow him on Twitter @MartynAshton and Facebook /martynashton.

TRIPLE OLYMPIAN JO PAVEY RECENTLY SAID IN RUNNERS WORLD MAGAZINE THAT “MASSAGE IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF MY TRAINING PROGRAMME, IT’S IMPORTANT FOR BOTH PERFORMANCE AND RECOVERY.” THE UK’S FINEST EVER LONG-DISTANCE RUNNER MO FARAH AGREES WITH HER “I GET MASSAGED ALL THE TIME, IT’S SO IMPORTANT WHEN YOU’VE PUT YOU BODY THROUGH HARD WORK.” But does it actually work? Yes! A study recently published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, which used a scenario of three massages a week for 10 weeks on one leg of study subjects and no treatment on the other leg; found that massaged legs gained increased flexibility and strength. Research in the Journal of Athletic Training noted a 30 per cent reduction in post-exercise muscle soreness whilst the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine found improved recovery and the British Journal of Sports Medicine enjoyed decreased fatigue. These results can be replicated with you too.

How can it help my running? Sports massage can improve the flexibility of tight muscles and correct muscular imbalances. Some techniques improve circulation, enabling muscles to use oxygen and nutrients more effectively, which can boost performance. Techniques to promote venous return [the rate of blood flow back to the heart] and lymphatic drainage can help you recover by relieving congestion in the muscles and removing waste products. Massage can also identify areas of tightness you weren’t aware of, nipping potential problems in the bud and preventing injury. Which really can’t be too bad for a 30 or 60 minute lie down.

Is massage more useful at particular times? Book in if you up your training, eg If you’re training for something like a marathon and the mileage increases weekly. Muscular tightness can cause

30

discomfort and injury if untreated. The best type of massage can also be a matter of timing. The depth should vary according to the training you are currently doing. A light massage can be helpful straight after a hard session, then stronger the next time.” We find that a lot of regular clients benefit from a maintenance massage every month, almost like the equivalent of an MOT for your body” Alex says. Maintenance massage shouldn’t conflict with performance or recovery. It can be deep and it addresses chronic injuries as well as increasing flexibility.

Do I need it as a recreational runner? At the end of the day recreational runners use the same muscles as elite athletes and undergo the same stresses and strains. Many recreational runners push themselves to perform to their potential, so pre- and post-event treatments help them prevent injury, achieve their goals and recover well.

So I’m going to feel less sore afterwards? Everyone’s body reacts in a different way, but you can often feel that your body has been through a good workout! Massage certainly has the power to relieve your muscles by promoting healing through breaking down scar tissue and adhesions. Massage therapy can alleviate symptoms of the dreaded DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). You may find massage best a couple of days after a hard workout or race to allow any soreness and stiffness to subside. If you’re in training for London 2014 then you need to start looking to add Sports Massage to your training programme. If you’re participating in the first Bournemouth Marathon Festival then make sure you’ve got your pre and post massage covered! FREE 20 minute Assessment CALL NOW 01202 509010

Lois Chitticks and Holly Merrifield started playing volleyball at the age of 8 with Wessex Volleyball Club. Now at 15 years old, they are still at Wessex and have had an amazing 7 years. Representing them at U15, 16 and 18 levels they have had a really good year. They played for the South-West Junior Ladies at the interregionals and after facing some top teams from around England managed to win. Lois and Holly recently competed at the UK School Games representing England South and both came home with gold medals, not losing one game in the whole tournament! Hi Lois and Holly, can you tell us how you first got into Volleyball? Lois: I first got into volleyball in year 4 when a Wessex coach did a taster session at my middle school, I then went to a few sessions at the club and absolutely loved it- I have played for Wessex ever since. Holly: I first started volleyball in year 4 along with Lois, although I went to the taster session I was unable to attend the volleyball due to other sporting commitments however, I did eventually join after about a month and have played for Wessex ever since. Congratulations on being selected to represent England South. What was the selection process like? Lois & Holly: we have trained really hard all year with our coaches Stuart Fullerton and Olympian Dan Hunter and each one of our camps have been really focused on what we want to achieve at UKSG. We have worked so hard at all of the camps on both our volleyball side and on bonding as a squad so that we can go out at UKSG and play some great volleyball and hopefully come back with a gold medal. Do you take part in any other sports? Lois: I used to play a lot of football and when I was younger I was convinced this would be a career for me. I played for Poole Town FC and whilst with them I won back to back cup and league titles and also competed at national competitions. I also used to do karate and managed to get to brown and white belt which is the belt before black. Unfortunately, I had to give these two up as it was too much commitment and I finally decided to focus on my volleyball. Holly: I started dance when I was 3 and always thought I was going to be a ballerina. I stopped dance when I was 7 as I found Baton Twirling. I was a Baton Twirler for 9 years and travelled England competing until National Championships where I achieved 5 National titles and was selected for the England team 32

in 2010. I travelled to Czech Republic for European Championships and placed 3rd. The following year I went to Switzerland to compete in the World Championships and placed 5th. It was the highlight of my sporting career so far but I sadly had to leave after my final year where I achieved 2 more national titles. It was a great end to my twirling career and I hope to achieve much more like this in my volleyball. Can you tell us about your training routine? Lois & Holly: Each training has a specific focus such as defence, attack or game play. We also normally do about half hour fitness at the beginning of each session to get us warm and to improve our stamina. We try to fit in some gym sessions around our busy training schedule to maintain our fitness and ensure that we are at peak ability in our sessions. You’ve been training as part of the England Junior training camps this summer, can you tell us about that? Lois & Holly: The coaches at England are amazing and it has been an honour for us both to be invited to the camps over the last year. We take part in three, two hour sessions each day with some continuing on to three when the coach feels it is necessary. It’s a great experience to be able to train with talented girls from all over the country and the trainings are at a high level and we always come back having learnt something new. Although the training is tough we have trust in our coaches as they have our best interests at heart. Do you aspire to a female player or female sports star in particular? Lois & Holly: Zara Dampney would definitely have to be one of our aspirations in the volleyball world as she is from our area and grew up playing for the same club as us. She has done many of the things that we have already done and has done a lot of amazing things that we would love to have the opportunity to do in the future such as compete in the Olympic Games. How do you balance studying with training? Lois: I go to Parkstone Grammar School and I am lucky to be at such an amazing school that understands how hard it can be sometimes to balance my school work will my training schedule. They are really supportive about everything and will always give me the extra help if I need it and I know I can talk to them easily if I need extra time or something. It is also nice to be at a school that cares about your sporting achievements as the teachers always ask me about my recent tournaments and are

genuinely interested in my volleyball. Holly: I go to Poole High School and they are very aware and supportive of what I do outside of school. They are very aware of the difficulties I face balancing the two things and are very supportive at the same time. They will often give me extensions and catch up sessions which really help. As well as this, during England Camps, they always set up compulsory study hours where we have to do school work. On top of this they will often sit down and have one-to-one conversations with each athlete talking to them about how they are handling exams and how we could do more to improve the amount of time spent on school work. This always helps and puts a lot of things into perspective. What are your hopes and goals for the future? Is Rio 2016 part of that?! Lois & Holly: Unfortunately indoor volleyball is not included in the 2016 Olympics because of funding which is gutting for both of us. Although we would love to see volleyball at the future Olympics and if we continue to train as hard as we have been 2020 and 2024 could definitely be in our reach. Can you describe in three words what Volleyball means to you? Lois: Determination, fast paced, banter. Holly: Commitment, intense, exhilarating. Finally, what would you recommend for people wanting to give Volleyball a go? Lois & Holly: We would recommend that you join a club or a team as the feeling of being part of a family you get from volleyball is incredible, the amount of social benefits it has is amazing. It benefits you not just as an athlete but also as a person because you are able to improve on your fitness so much but also get to make so many relationships with people you wouldn’t normally know. It is one of the best sports in the world and honestly one of the best opportunities we have ever been given. We couldn’t be here without the amazing coaches that have gotten us to where we are today, they have been so supportive and although we may not have got on with them all the time we understand that they only do what is best for us as individuals and we wouldn’t be the players we are today without the help and support of them. Thank you to Dave Gunter, Dan Hunter, Geoff Allen, Lynn Allen, Rex Palmer, Stuart Fullerton, Jenny Rogers, Matt Stephens, Paul Locke and our England coaches. Thank you for talking to us, Lois and Holly. We wish you success in your future.

The Game talks to Sophie Jardin, local kitesurfer, wakeboarder and skater, about the surf scene on the south coast. Name Sport Sponsors

Sophie Jardin Kitesurfing and Wakeboarding King of Watersports rider

Sophie was born in France, from a little island on the west coast called the Island of Ré and grew up in Switzerland having moved there where she was 4. She was just 3 years old when she wore skis for the first time and has loved the mountains ever since. She moved to Bournemouth a few years ago to study Graphic Design and start her own local, girl oriented skate brand called Kalypso Concept, shaping and illustrating mini red cedar cruisers. Thanks for talking to us, Sophie...what got you into watersports and when did you start? Spending all my holidays on an island since I was a child has enabled me to be surrounded by watersports. My mother was a very good windsurfer when she was younger and she used to take my sisters and me with her. A couple of years later, one of my sisters started kitesurfing and I could not wait to have a go at it. In terms of wakeboarding, I had been doing it behind a boat on the Island of Ré for a few years, but my boyfriend made me discover cable which I fell in love with instantly! You’re an active wakeboarder and kitesurfer, do you have a favourite and why? Both sports are amazing in their own way. Kitesurfing enables you to seek spots from all around the world and be in harmony with the elements. Cable wakeboarding is a constant sport. You never have to worry about the wind conditions and the weather which enables you to ride more often and progress quicker. Kitesurfing and wakeboarding’s similarities make them compatible. If there is wind, I go kitesurfing and if there is no wind, I go wakeboarding! Have you competed in any competitions and is there anything you are training for now? Not yet. I will I hope to enter the Uniwake student nationals for wakeboarding next year. It’s the biggest UK wakeboarding event and the Uniwake events are always a lot of fun!

SKATING IS FOR ME THE EQUIVALENT OF OTHER PEOPLE’S DAILY JOGS. IT IS A GOOD WAY FOR ME TO BE OUTSIDE AND TAKE A BREAK FROM WORK. I LIKE TO CRUISE ALONG THE SEA FRONT FROM BOURNEMOUTH TO SANDBANKS AND TEST NEW SHAPED BOARDS.

34

How difficult is it kitesurf or wakeboard for someone who may have never tried it? Wakeboarding is probably the easiest board sport to learn as it isn’t weather dependant and the cable is constant. Kitesurfing requires the handling of the board and the kite which can be difficult at the beginning. You also have to be aware of where you are heading and think about the right of way. I would recommend to learn how to wakeboard first and then have kitesurfing lessons as you will be comfortable with the board and will only need to learn how to handle the kite. Have you been to the new wakeboarding park at the New Forest Water Park and do you think this is a good way for people to give the sport a go? I have indeed! I absolutely love this new cable as it is extremely smooth and the obstacles are brand new with brilliant designs which make it easier for rotations. This cable park is the perfect way for beginners to have a go at watersports with security and supervision. What’s your best or favourite trick? I would say nose press and 360 on the flat box! Tell us about your skating and where you like to go locally? I like to skate along the sea front from Bournemouth to Sandbanks. I also enjoy bowls and I am looking forward to learning more tricks with my friend, Stefani Nurding, Animal pro skater. Skating is also a way for me to link my passion for Graphics and Illustration with riding and my skate brand.

Have you had any accidents whilst taking part in your sports? I have! I damaged my right arm nerve and ligament whilst snowboarding 3 years ago and dislocated my right knee 2 years ago skating. Knees are the rider’s worst enemy! I don’t think I have ever been to a cable without seeing at least one person with a knee brace. What do you think of our coast and conditions for watersports? The conditions are usually great for kitesurfing in the area as it is usually windy. The winds are however often gusty at Poole Harbour so you need a forgiving kite! Overall great conditions if you have a good wetsuit and you don’t mind the cold water in winter. What’s your favourite surf report to check for the best weather? Windguru is the most reliable report for the south west coast but the best way to find out if the wind is good is to go check the spot! What would you recommend for someone thinking about giving it a go and where is a good place to get some tuition? The best place to learn how to kitesurf is Poole Harbour as it is shallow. Easy Riders and Poseidon schools are around to teach beginners’ classes to freestyle clinics. For wakeboarding, the New Forest Cable Park has a System 2 to teach beginners. …and to get advice on equipment? If you are going to wakeboard or kitesurf in England you need a warm wetsuit and a reliable kite. King of Watersports is the biggest online sports equipment retailer in the UK and The Game readers can get 10% off your order if you use the voucher code King1 at the checkout! What are your favourite hot spots to kitesurf and wakeboard in the surrounding area? My favourite kitesurfing spot in the area will be Poole Harbour as I am a terrible swimmer and I like to cruise! In terms of wakeboarding, the New Forest Cable Park is the closest and my favourite as well but when I go to London I usually stop by Liquid leisure cable. Are there any places you haven’t been in the world that are on your list to visit? I would love to go to Australia, South America, Bali and Egypt. Finally describe in three words what your sports mean to you… Adrenaline, Freedom and Fun!

D E R I P S N I E B Y R O T S S ’ E N I T JUS

“If I can’t see, I can’t work” explains Justine Roberts, finance manager at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital. “Being a single mum with two children at home not being able to work is just not an option.” Over the last seven years Justine’s eye sight has deteriorated due to cataracts - the leading cause of blindness in the world. A cataract is the clouding of the lens inside the eye that can make vision blurred or misty. To cope with her fading vision, Justine has had to rely on wearing glasses. “I absolutely hate glasses!” declares Justine. “Not only is the weight of them uncomfortable on the bridge of my nose but they leave you blind around the edges of the rims, not very practical at all.” Even with the help of glasses she needed a bigger computer screen at work and found it almost impossible to use a laptop. The challenges weren’t just at work, her poor vision was also causing problems in her personal life. As the owner of dressage and eventing horses, Justine has started to compete at a professional level. Being a very physical sport, Justine has found it impossible to ride in glasses. While working with her horses, her glasses would steam up, fall off or break, leaving her with several black eyes. “I came to the conclusion that it is just not safe for me to wear them around the horses.” Justine has tried contact lenses but found after a day spent looking at a computer screen she was left with painful dry eyes and the lenses didn’t fare any better after a day with the horses. After enduring this for nearly eight years, Justine decided to take the plunge and turned to Mr Mahesh Ramchandani, who has been a consultant ophthalmologist at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital for 7 years. Justine explains: ¬“Everyone said how wonderful laser eye surgery was but I was one of life’s sceptics. By nature I am very risk averse but there’s something quite different about having the treatment in a hospital with highly trained surgeons that you trust as opposed to a high street optician.” After examining Justine’s eyes, Mr Ramchandani broke the news that her left eye correction was too severe for laser surgery. “I was absolutely devastated,” admits Justine. “After deciding to go for it I was disappointed to discover that I wasn’t a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery.” However all was not lost, Justine was a prime candidate for lens replacement treatment, where the cataract is removed and a new acrylic lens is implanted in its place. Through one-to-one consultations, Mr Ramchandani identified Justine’s personal needs and tailored the options available to her specifically to achieve the best outcome. With a long commute to work, the requirements of her job combined with her passion for horse riding, Mr Ramchandani was very aware that Justine’s main driver was the desire for spectacle independence which isn’t always achievable with standard lenses. Mr Ramchandani

JUSTINE RIDING HER HORSE RALEIGHNA

explains: “It was evident from our consultations that judging distances is very important to Justine for horse riding and for her 40 mile journey to work as well as close vision for computer work.” As Justine needed good distance and near vision and wanted to be as independent from glasses as possible, Mr Ramchandani recommended a particular type of lens. In particular for Justine’s needs, the Lentis Comfort lens gives clarity at the working distances she requires for her professional and personal life with the advantage of giving good intermediate vision, reducing the likely need for glasses. On the morning of the operation Justine admits she felt a little anxious but Mr Ramchandani put her at ease by explaining exactly what the treatment involved. During his career Mr Ramchandani has performed tens of thousands of surgical operations and he chose to operate on Justine’s eyes separately to avoid any risk of infection. “I had absolute faith in Mr Ramchandani’s abilities,” Justine says. “One of the benefits of having the procedure in a state of the art hospital like Nuffield Health was that I could have the treatment under general anaesthetic using the most advanced technology in comfortable and safe surroundings.” Following the 20 minute procedure, Justine was already able to see without relying on glasses through her treated eye, but it was after the second operation that Justine could feel the most benefits from her surgery. “Living in Bridport, Dorset, everyone knows everyone and it was so embarrassing having to rely on my daughter to tell me who it was who just said hi! Being able to wake up in the morning without reaching for my glasses is a great luxury. I just feel happier in myself and so much more confident, like someone who has had a crooked nose fixed! Now my big computer screen is

not a necessity and I have the freedom to use a laptop. I’ve already referred a friend to Mr Ramchandani. I had enough confidence in him to know that he wouldn’t take a risk with my eye sight. There is the misconception that you can have anything you want as long as you pay for it but he would only entertain what he considered to be the safest and most appropriate options for me. It is reassuring to know that you are getting the best advice.” Justine and her horse are currently training to compete at Aldon British Eventing Horse Trails in late October, where they are planning to enter their very first BE100 class. For more information on eye surgery or to book an appointment with Mr Ramchandani to find out if you are suitable for laser eye surgery at the Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital, contact the customer services team on 01202 702830.

Health-on-Line’s The Game took some time out this month to talk to one of Health-on-Line’s upcoming sales agents – but there’s more to Sam Gedye than meets the eye. Aged just 16 years old, Sam left home and joined the Army – an age where the vast majority of us are still playing computer games and asking our parents for lifts. After talking to Sam and listening to his experiences you may expect a man that is very defensive and unwilling to talk about his memories. However, Sam is incredibly grounded with fantastic communication and empathy skills – characteristics that have obviously helped him communicate with customers at Health-on-Line. Sam spent a total of 5 years with the Army, visiting countries all over the world, such as Kenya, the Falklands, Canada, America and Afghanistan. In the six-months prior to his deployment, training was very intensive, both physically and mentally. To cope with the heat, and army kit that was needed to be carried round on the daily patrol in Afghan, Sam underwent intensive training in weights and cardio in order to have excellent fitness levels – training that could last for two hours at a time, or up to a week straight. Based on the frontline in Afghanistan, Sam was deployed in 2009 to Helmand Province, just outside of the renowned Camp Bastion, with the aim to provide security for the Afghan population. At the age of just 18, with sometimes up to a month with no contact from home, no doubt this was a pretty daunting task. However, Sam seems calm about the whole experience, “A day to day regime for us varied dramatically and was governed by events around us. Sometimes we would patrol for the whole day, others we would be fighting – there really would be no 2 days the same”. For a fitness fanatic like Sam, even this was a gruelling task on his body. With only rations to survive on and an intense physical demand, Sam lost a stone and a half during his time in Afghanistan. However, in their time off, Sam and his army comrades still managed to make make-shift gyms out of equipment such as ammunition tins to help keep their strength up. Boxing was also a keen sport involved by many of his comrades, with gloves and pads being 38

shipped out to Afghanistan. Sam’s time in Afghanistan was cut short when he was injured in a grenade attack just outside the basecamp which resulted in shrapnel embedding in his leg to the bone. The injury was severe enough to cause Sam to fly home, and undergo rehab for four months where he learnt to rebuild his strength in his leg enabling him to walk and run again as quickly as possible. For someone heavily involved in sport, this was obviously a testing time, Sam recalls, “I was relieved for the injury not to be any worse than it was, and while part of me was relieved to be coming home too, the sense of guilt that I wasn’t out fighting with my friends also played a big part in my mind”. Sam was lucky to make a full recovery, and has been able to continue playing sport. After his injury, Sam stayed with the army for a further two and a half years, but made the decision last year to leave while he was still young enough, in search of the next challenge. Something which he has found in Health-on-Line. To some, this may seem like a strange career move, however many of the skills Sam learnt in the Army have been transferable to his new role as a sales consultant, “The work ethic that I held in the army of what you put in, affecting what you get out, still applies to Health-onLine. Working in our offices is a fantastic environment to work in, but at times it can be both demanding and challenging – you need to be dedicated to succeed”. When asked what where the main benefits of working for Health-on-Line Sam clearly stipulated the opportunity that Health-on-Line offers, somewhat of a rare occurrence in the current

THE ARMY N I D L E H I T ETHIC THA TING WHAT YOU K R O W E H “T , AFFEC N I T U P U ON-LINE. O OF WHAT Y APPLIES TO HEALTH- C ASTI TILL GET OUT, S R OFFICES IS A FANT ED U NE IN OU WORKING TO WORK IN, BUT YO ENT ENVIRONM D TO SUCCEED”. ICATE TO BE DED economic climate. Sales consultants at Health-on-Line work hard, but also are considerably rewarded too, with the constant opportunity to take advantage of some incredible incentives. With no previous experience in sales, or in private medical insurance, Sam initially had a lot to learn but seems to have found his feet in Health-on-Line, with some of his calls even being used in training for new starters. Despite the long hours involved in the job, Sam also still finds time to fit his passion for sport alongside his role – going to the gym every morning before work, doing football training once a week, playing for a local football team on Saturday, and then heading to work after his match is finished! Sam clearly has ambition, determination and dedication – characteristics which mean he is bound to succeed in life. Are you looking for a job? Do you have Sam’s qualities? Health-on-Line is currently recruiting! Visit www. iwantyourjob.co.uk for more information.

VELOCITY TAKE ON

H E A LT H & F I T N E S S

At Velocity Health & Fitness at The Village Urban Resort, you’ll find state-of-the-art kit, full-length heated swimming pools and spacious studios. With the facilities and services constantly improving and evolving to meet our customers’ needs, we are pleased to highlight the latest news and information from Velocity in The Game magazine. Velocity is proud to announce their sponsorship of a new local extreme race event taking place on 19th October. The hotly anticipated, ‘Lake Fear’ is a running race with a difference. Set in and around New Forest Water Park, Brave Runner, the event organisers, a team of local athletes and fitness professionals will be utilising the great location of the water park grounds and lake for the 5km course which includes twenty testing obstacles along the way. Velocity have backed the event by providing sponsorship for the obstacles which include mud pits, walls, netting, hurdles, tyre runs plus many more toe curling challenges. Velocity have also donated prizes for the winners including day passes, gym bags and towels and annual membership at the health club for the fastest runner over the finishing line.

The race will take place throughout the day with waves of runners starting off every half hour. Each entrant will receive a ‘swag bag’ of goodies and the chance to win one of the great top prizes for the quickest times. With the fantastic facilities at the water park, enjoy a drink and lunch with friends after your race and watch your fellow competitors race to the finish line…a perfect reward for making it to the end. Lake Fear is a muddy, sweaty, gritty race and the first of many to come from the Brave Runner team who are already making plans for Spring 2014.

This event is one not to be missed on Saturday 19th October. Buy your ticket and book your wave at: www.braverunner.co.uk

Matt Pressman, Manager of Velocity comments, “We’re really pleased to support this first race of its kind in our area. Many of the staff and customers at Velocity are in training and looking forward to taking on the lake!” The Brave Runner team, made up of three local athletes and fitness professionals, have all enjoyed taking part in similar gruelling races across the country. The original concept to bring this style of event to the South of Dorset was devised by Melissa Rayner, mum of two and personal trainer, who is competing in the first ever Bournemouth marathon. She and her team have designed an event that provides more than your average running competition. Extreme races have been hugely popular with thousands taking part all over the country and having competed in many herself, Mel wanted to bring this concept for runners and those that like to race socially and competitively on courses with an ‘edge’, to have the opportunity to take on a challenge on local soil. Mel comments, “I’m passionate about achieving whether that’s in sport, life or work. The feeling of ‘losing’ yourself in a race to the elements is quite addictive in our busy day to day lives. The sense of achievement when you compete and complete a race on your own or with friends is empowering and this is our mission with Lake Fear. We’ve carefully designed the obstacles so all abilities can make it around the course, get to the end and succeed.

MISSION NO. 12 FOREST SEGWAY, MOORS VALLEY Hi Josh, big respect after the last challenge. Any plans to get out wakeboarding again? It was great fun. I have already booked another day on the lake..

We’ve recruited local nightclub owner, JOSH SIMONS to work through our list of challenges trying out some of the area’s best activities and to be our ‘Have a go hero’. Josh impressed us with his wakeboard skills last month. He took to it like a duck to water! We’re hoping to see him out on the board again to fine tune his jumps and tricks. This month, we’ve set Josh a challenge out in the forest to try Forest Segway. The Game’s editor, Jo, joined him on a warm autumn afternoon at Moors Valley Country Park, courtesy of Go Ape. Will Josh prove to be as good on two wheels as he is on four?!

How’s your balance?! Our challenge this month involves two wheels – Segway. Have you had a go at this before? It depends how many Whisky’s I’ve had. I’ve never tried Segway riding before, however it looks like great fun. AFTER… You seemed to get the hang of the Segway well. What did you think? That was bizarre yet awesome fun! The weather was amazing, the grounds are beautiful at Moors Valley too. Was it difficult to keep your balance especially through the uneven paths in the woods? Once you get the hang of how to balance your weight on the Segway to move forward and how to slow down on the corners, it was quite easy. I felt like a futuristic Lewis Hamilton, I really got in to character. How did you find the instructor and was it easy to control the Segway once shown what to do? Dan was brilliant. The instructions were clear and concise, he made it easy for a beginner to get the hang of it. We got a good view of the Go Ape treetop adventure course, food for thought for another challenge! Fancy giving that one a go?! I’m dreading it already. I’m scared of heights so the thought of Ape’ing around the tree tops fills me with fear. Finally, would you recommend a Segway experience for people and families to try out? 100%. You have to do it. I might buy myself one for Christmas and take it to Tescos for my weekly shop. It might scare the old ladies on aisle 5, but I’ll take the risk. Well done, Josh for another good challenge. We’re busy planning your November task…watch this space!

OF A NEW BMW GENERATION

…and BMW 4 Series Coupé.

Introducing the new BMW X5

The new BMW 4 Series Coupe heralds the dawn of a new coupe era at BMW. Launched as the fourth generation of BMW’s sporty mid-size Coupe, the new BMW 4 Series Coupe embodies the very essence of aesthetic appeal and dynamics in the premium segment. Its stylistic features carry the promise of a powerful presence on the road, stand-out dynamic ability and driving pleasure in abundance. Indeed, the new BMW 4 Series Coupe represents a paragon of balanced proportions and the final chapter in a story of development. The “4” in its title headlines this new era for the Coupe and emphasises not only its stand-alone design, but also an even greater technical differentiation from its BMW 3 Series cousins.

Now in its third generation, the BMW X5 still manages to surpass its own high standards. As a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) it offers all of the performance and luxury you would expect from BMW. This is achieved through a range of intelligent technologies that elevate efficiency, driving dynamics, comfort and versatility to a whole new level – both on and off the road. The third generation will also introduce the BMW M50d M Performance Automobile. Boasting the world’s most powerful six-inline diesel engine, suspension technology with hallmark M precision-tuning and aerodynamically honed exterior features, the BMW X5 M50d combines superior dynamics on the road with unimpeachable traction off the beaten track. The other character facets of the new BMW X5, moreover, can be explicitly highlighted: model-specific options offered by BMW Individual provide exclusive elegant touches, while new products in the Original BMW Accessories range – likewise specifically designed for the Sports Activity Vehicle – serve to underline its versatility and practicality. A compelling combination of sportiness, exclusivity and everyday utility distinguishes the new BMW X5 M50d. Its six-cylinder in-line diesel engine boasts detailed refinements and comes with three-stage turbocharging and common rail direct injection. From a 3.0-litre displacement it develops output of 280 kW /381 hp and a peak torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft). BMW BluePerformance technology as standard means the M Performance Automobile is also EU6-compliant. The diesel unit’s power is transferred to the road by an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive.

BMW 4 Series Coupé

Powerful aesthetics and sporting dynamism characterise the new BMW 4 Series Coupé. Add to that a unique driving sensation thanks to the low centre of gravity, near 50:50 weight distribution, high body stiffness and efficient engines with TwinPower Turbo technology. The new Sport, Modern and Luxury models together with the SE and M Sport mean numerous options when personalising the new BMW 4 Series Coupé, whilst standard equipment is significantly increased and includes Xenon headlights, Dakota leather upholstery, Front seat heating, Servotronic and front and rear Park Distance Control. One highlight is the unique new Adaptive LED headlights which features LED indicators, front foglights and tilt/ swivel functionality. The innovative Air Breathers not only set an exciting design accent but also improve aerodynamics and efficiency. Ensuring even more driving pleasure are the eightspeed Sport automatic transmission, which now features Launch Control and the latest BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems such as the full-colour BMW Head-up Display. The AFC Bournemouth CHERRIES 2 CHARLTON 1 03/08

The Game is pleased to include The AFC Bournemouth Gallery, new this month for fans to check out fantastic action shots of the players, recap on moments from games to remember and spot themselves in the crowds!

The players celebrate as Lewis Grabban gives the side an early lead.

Final score

CHERRIES 1 WIGAN 0 17/08

CHERRIES 1 WATFORD 6 10/8

Simon Francis leads the Cherries out against Charlton as they start their first campaign in the second tier of English football for almost 20 years.

After the disappointment of losing out to Wigan last year in the FA Cup, the Cherries got their revenge, defeating the Latics 1-0 on a wet afternoon at the Goldsands Stadium

CHERRIES 1 BLACKPOOL 2 14/09

CHERRIES 1 DONCASTER 0 31/8

CHERRIES 1 HUDDERSFIELD 5 24/8

The Cherries’ first away game was in Hertfordshire to last year’s losing play-off finalists, Watford. Despite a bright opening 45 minutes, the Cherries lose out 6-1 but Ryan Fraser is one highlight for the visitors and his performance will have no doubt impressed on-watching Scotland coach Gordon Strachan.

Tokelo Rantie lights up the Goldsands Stadium as he makes his debut as a substitute in the 1-0 victory over Barnsley.

The side celebrate Lewis Grabban’s first half equaliser, but it isn’t enough to prevent the side losing their first match at home of the 2013/14 campaign.

CHERRIES 3 MIDDLESBROUGH 3 21/9

Brett Pitman scores the solitary goal of the game, to open his account for the season.

CHERRIES 1 BARNSLEY 0 17/9

The management team keep a close eye on the game but the Cherries suffer a second consecutive defeat on the road.

A week later, the striker is handed his full debut as the Cherries thrash out a 3-3 draw at Middlesbrough.

“It’s a dream come true for me to play in England. I’m looking forward to playing in the Championship and contributing to the success of Bournemouth. They are an ambitious club who want to be promoted to the Premier League. We have a good team that is up for the challenge.” TOKELO RANTIE

RANTIE: RAGS TO RICHES Tokelo Rantie may have earned himself a ‘dream move’ to England with AFC Bournemouth earlier this month, but it hasn’t all been plain sailing for the highly rated striker. Born into a family suffering from poverty in the heart of South Africa, the 23-year-old turned to football upon the recommendation of businessman Sipho Leboko, as he looked to raise money to fund his studies. He soon joined up with the Stars of Africa Academy and the rest, as they say, is history. “I did well at Stars of Africa and coach Farouk Khan signed me on the spot. Soccer has opened the doors of success for me and I’m very thankful to all the people who supported me,” Rantie said. “That was the end of my dream of doing business management and the beginning of my soccer career. If it were not for poverty, I would be in business now.”

Rantie then went on to play for Ferroviario de Beira and CD Maxaquene in neighbouring Mozambique before his career took another turn and him to Europe. The academy’s links with Sweden meant that the athletic forward was on his way to Swedish third division PHOTO: SEEKER NEWS side IFK Hassleholm on loan, where his performances were picked up in his native South Africa as he signed October 2013 AFC Bournemouth Fixtures for Premier TUE 1ST LEEDS 19:45 AWAY League side Orlando Pirates. SAT 5TH MILLWALL 15:00 HOME Although the Johannesburg SAT 19TH NOTTINGHAM FOREST 15:00 AWAY based club couldn’t agree a SAT 26TH LEICESTER 15:00 AWAY permanent deal for Rantie with the Stars of Africa Academy, he was selected for the international squad and scored in a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Gabon. Two months later Rantie returned to Sweden on loan, signing for Malmo. His natural pace and 50

power made him a key player and he scored a spectacular goal against Halmstada ahead of agreeing a four-year deal at the club where Zlatan Ibrahimovic started his career. With future around his speculation rife at the start of the 2013/14 campaign, Rantie helped Malmo through the qualifying stages of the Europa League. But whilst his club’s hopes of progressing in the competition faded against Swansea last month, little did Rantie know that his aspirations to one day play in England were in fact being realised. “I saw him play against Swansea and Malmo were beaten comfortably on the day, but he was the one person who caused them problems every time he got the ball,” Cherries assistant manager Jason Tindall explains. And just under two weeks later the deal was done, as Rantie signed for the Cherries for an undisclosed fee on a four-year deal. “I think he will add a lot to the squad,” manager Eddie Howe said in the wake of the signing. “He’s got pace to burn and he’s technically very good, so we are very excited to work with him.”And Rantie was equally complimentary towards his new management duo and the club.“I think the faith and belief they have shown in me is incredible. You know when there are people that see the good in you and how they can make you a better player,” he said. “That is overwhelming. To be honest with you, it was not about money but it was the faith they showed in me. They have spoken to me about my game and even more inspiring is that they have spotted my weaknesses and where I need to improve to become a better player.” And whilst the forward’s start to life on the south coast has been somewhat disrupted due to the necessary documentation being completed and a spell away on international duty for Bafana Bafana, Rantie now can’t wait to see his dream become a reality.
