PZREMYSLAW PAWLICKI (NO.3) TANGLES WITH TEAM MATE VACLAV MILIK (NO.4) ON GOOD FRIDAY MORNING V SWINDON BUT, DESPITE A TRIP TO HOSPITAL, PAWLICKI WAS A MATCH WINNER HOURS LATER IN THE RETURN LEG. IN the A.B.C. of Speedway, “B” stands for BRAVE and the Poole Pirates have surely demonstrated just what a brave breed of riders they have on board this term.
PZREMYSLAW (SHAMEK) PAWLICKI
Injuries happen in any sport but, when these guys clash at speeds of up to 70mph with little to protect them other than a padded Kevlar race suit; it’s no surprise that these skirmishes can hurt! Every season we witness spectacular spills and, most times, it involves riders who get up, dust themselves down and just carry on regardless. It’s a stark contrast to professional players in many sports who spend lengthy periods on the bench after pulling a muscle or twisting a joint. For a professional speedway rider it is the calculated risk of bone-crunching injuries and ‘riding through the pain barrier’ that sets them apart from their sporting rivals. Already, in 2014, the Pirates have suffered losses due to unfortunate on-track incidents, yet the affected riders race on. Take Good
Friday as a prime example. Popular Pole, Przemyslaw (Shamek) Pawlicki, was inadvertently clattered into by a team mate during a dash to the first bend in heat 6 against the Swindon Robins. Prostrate on the shale for some minutes, and after a suspicion of an internal bleed, he took doctor’s orders and went to hospital for a scan. Whilst waiting for tests the brave 22 year old racer told doctors that he was determined to race again THAT NIGHT when Poole faced the return leg! Given an all clear, not only did Pirates’ latest Pole star take his place in the team seven hours later, but put in a match winning performance that the Pirates could not have done without. Pawlicki is not the only example of the way these gladiator-like heroes go about their business. Poole born number seven, Kyle Newman, suffered a terrifying torn thigh muscle whilst on duty for his lower division club, Plymouth, yet was back in the saddle for the Pirates, tearing up the shale again just 10 days later.
And now the latest to return to the fold is Pirates’ captain and Aussie ace Darcy Ward. The Poole number one had sustained crippling injuries in New Zealand in the first round of the World Championship which left him with a torn cruciate ligament, a broken thumb and concussion. Just over a month from the accident, Darcy was back on track, looking every bit the world class star he has become, whilst admitting that he would still be several weeks away from full fitness. Given that this remarkable trio are not the only Pirates to have succumbed to the perils of the speedway track, and that the rest have also brushed off dust from their padded suits, it simply underlines why the riders in this thrilla-minute sport are branded by other motorcycling exponents as ‘madmen’. The bravery these young racers show on a regular basis makes up just part of the complexion of an international speedway rider. Most of the top riders are contracted to three European teams and will be racing routinely every week in the UK, Sweden and Poland. It’s a punishing schedule where the itinerary can have them racing and flying between countries on a day to day basis. Poole fans are fortunate indeed to have such talent serving up world class entertainment weekly on Wednesday nights throughout the summer at Poole Stadium. If fortune really does favour the brave then the Pirates are surely heading in the right direction for an amazing SIXTH Elite League title in 2014. Our advice is to catch them while you can!

The Lions’ Annual Awards BRFC have been doing lots of work behind the scenes over the last few months across the club and have been presented with the RFU Accreditation certificate in recognition of the strength of the club from U6 all the way to First XV. The accreditation scheme has enabled the sections of the club to look very carefully at all aspects to ensure that the club is a welcoming and friendly environment. It provides a framework for us to show what we are doing, how we do it and where we can improve. This process has given us a plan for the next few years on how we can improve the club in all areas and we are starting to look at how we can deliver the necessary improvements. BRFC held their annual awards ceremony on the 16th May with newly elected Chairman, Phil Sinkinson presenting prizes. Denis Eveleigh as retiring Chairman was thanked for his contribution over the years to BRFC and was presented with the Alan Thorne Memorial trophy. The player of the year award, The John Plank trophy was presented to Andy Spikings in his absence. PROFILE
This month, we catch up with Andrew Howard, a sales team manager, to talk about working at Ageas and his love of football. NAME: Andrew Howard WORK: Home Insurance, Inbound Sales Department, Sales Team Manager SPORT: Football POSITION: Centre Midfield PREVIOUS CLUBS: Wigan Athletic, Rochdale, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Lymington, New Milton and Weymouth
Tell us about your role at Ageas and how long you’ve been there… I’ve been at Ageas for ten years in October and been a manager for eight and a half years. My journey started as an advisor and I worked my way up very quickly. The company supported me to develop my career by guiding me through numerous internal courses including effective coaching of others. I’m currently taking a CII qualification paid for by Ageas. I’m also a fully qualified coach and manager through Ageas’ own training and competence scheme.
build up the hours another day. This flexibility helped me a lot. Last year Ageas held an Annual Football Tournament, how did your team get on? I am currently captain of the Ageas UK team and we compete against six other nations: France, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Belgium and Luxembourg. We competed in Belgium last year and won the competition after a hard fought finale against the host nation. We have won two out of the last three tournaments and look forward to defending our title later this year.
Ageas Bournemouth Football Tournament takes place at the Littledown Centre on Sunday 1st June 11:30 – 15:30 where the teams will battle it out to be the 2014 Champions whilst raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. www.ageas.co.uk/bournemouth 0800 0969116 Recruitment Hotline
“ I FEEL THE SUPPORT ASPECT AND THE CAMARADERIE BETWEEN PEOPLE ARE TWO OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN EVER HAVE” What do you like most about working at Ageas in Bournemouth? The people are brilliant and are a key factor in keeping both myself and others happy and engaged within our roles. The support structure for both professional and personal development is exceptional. When did you start playing football and who do you currently play for? I started playing football aged eleven. I’m not playing for anyone currently as I retired from club football in 2010 but I might be making a comeback next season. Watch this space! How do you balance your time between work and football? It’s very difficult as the higher you go up the football ladder, the further travelling you have to do. There’s lots of long journeys and not getting home till the early hours are a hard mix. Ageas were very good to me and used to let me finish early if required and
How have the disciplines you learned in football helped you to become a Sales Team Manager? I have learned to be disciplined and structured in my approach as well as always looking to support my team mates whenever they require it. I feel the support aspect and the camaraderie between people are two of the most important things you can ever have and I would definitely say football brought that out in me. THE PERSONAL TOUCH
Ok, I know at times the gods don’t always deliver the perfect sunshine that you might be craving; it is England remember. But no question there will be times over the next few months when the debate about which pair of flip flops to wear and which beach to frequent will rear its head. As a personal trainer myself, teaching outdoor circuits and boot camps I regularly see first-hand the Summer upsurge in people wanting to trim up (improve muscle tone) for the beach season ahead. As is often the case though, despite the best intentions and levels of work rate, most of this demographic fail to achieve their targets. This can be for many reasons; one which is common amongst the majority but not often discussed is poor calorie control. Don’t panic though if you’re sat there wondering what ‘poor calorie control means’; the purpose of the following short article is to give you the understanding of this and a point of reference which will hopefully see you maximise your results this Summer.
1 COUNT CALORIES
Right, so before we get into the bones of how and when to eat, lets firstly look at calorie counting. Question: How many of you actually count the amount of calories you consume each day? If you don’t then start now; my first tip is to write down for 7 days everything you consume (food and drink) within a food diary. Having it on paper or in your phone/tablet makes it easier to total up your calories and more importantly stops you from sneaking in too many treats! Counting calories will of course help, but naturally you need to know how many calories your body requires each day for weight loss, gain or maintenance. Living in the technological age that we do let me try and explain how to use an online BMR calculator (below). • Click on the top google link for ‘BMR calculator’ then, when the home screen opens enter your height, weight and age in the provided boxes and hit calculate. • Then with the calculated BMR number let’s say ‘1,542’ for example you need to multiply this by your weekly physical activity level (PAL) to give you your active metabolic rate (AMR); (exercising 1-3 times a week is 1.375, exercising 3-5 times a week is 1.55, exercising 6-7 times a week is 1.725). In example 1542 x 1.375 = 2,120 (AMR). • For the last step, you need to either minus or add 500-1000 calories from your AMR to work out how many calories you need to consume each day. For example for weight loss the figure would be 2,120 – 500 = 1,620 kcals.

TIPS
FOR THE ULTIMATE BEACH BODY
RECYCLE YOUR CALORIES
2
Tip 2 ties in again with the above mention of calorie counting but applies more to those who are specifically hitting a plateau in their weight loss efforts. Have you ever heard of calorie recycling? This is where you change the amount of calories you consume almost daily to speed up the body’s fat burning processes. For example instead of just reducing your diet by 5001,000 calories a day as mentioned above you would follow a template similar to what is shown below:
The second formula I want to share with you is for people who have less weight to lose and want to increase muscle tone and definition. It works by loading the body up with energy (Complex Carbohydrates) the day before strenuous exercise whilst additionally providing you with the necessary nutrients (protein) to help recovery and repair after exercise.
Weekly Calorie Overview (Example 1) • MONDAY = Your AMR Number (Minus 700 kcals from exercise and nutrition) • TUESDAY = Your AMR Number (Minus 500 kcals from exercise and nutrition) • WEDNESDAY = Your AMR Number (Minus 300 kcals from exercise and nutrition) • THURSDAY = Your AMR Number (Minus 700 kcals from exercise and nutrition) • FRIDAY = Your AMR Number (Minus 500 kcals from exercise and nutrition) • SATURDAY = Your AMR Number (Minus 300 kcals from exercise and nutrition) • SUNDAY = Your AMR Number (Minus 0 kcals)
Weekly Calorie Overview (Example 2) • MONDAY (Exercise Session) = Your AMR Number - 400 kcals carbs - 800 kcals protein - 200 kcal fat • TUESDAY = Your AMR Number - 1,000 kcals carbs - 600 kcals protein - 200 kcals fat • WEDNESDAY (Exercise Session) = Your AMR Number - 400 kcals carbs - 800 kcals protein - 200 kcal fat • THURSDAY = Your AMR Number - 1,000 kcals carbs - 600 kcals protein - 200 kcals fat • FRIDAY (Exercise Session) = Your AMR Number - 400 kcals carbs 800 kcals protein - 200 kcal fat • SATURDAY = Your AMR Number - 1,000 kcals carbs - 600 kcals protein - 200 kcals fat • SUNDAY = Your AMR Number - 1,000 kcals carbs - 600 kcals protein - 200 kcals fat
Total calories burnt = 3,000 each week (this equates to a weekly weight loss of nearly 2lbs per week) The above calorie planning example is just one option when dieting for weight loss and detoxing; the premise behind this method is the metabolism never lowers but your body continues to burn excess fat when at rest. This way of eating is excellent for people who want safe and effective weight loss without hitting a plateau whilst trying.
Note that with example 2, carbohydrates can be consumed both before and after exercise and you can partake in less strenuous training on some of your rest days i.e. Tuesday, Thursday and the weekends. There are other calorie recycling methods, some more proven than others but the examples above I believe are two of the easiest to follow and have stimulated positive results.
As we start pulling in towards the conclusion of this short article, I would like to finish by sharing some further short tips that need to be considered in the pursuit of the ultimate beach body.
3
Source all of your carbohydrates from whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables.
4
Try and eat organic for every meal or snack where possible.
5
Eat ‘complete’ proteins organic meat, fish, poultry and eggs.
6
Lower your saturated fat intake (below 30g Male, 20g Female a day) and instead source fats from palm oils, animal fats and nuts/seeds.
7
Eat every 2-3 hours throughout the day and always eat a larger breakfast straight after waking up.
8
Watch your processed sugar intake Males should consume no more 30g a day, Females 20g.
9
Drink 3-4 litres of water a day.
10
Sleep 7-8 hours a night. You should note here that tips 3 to 10 should always be adhered to no matter if you’re training for weight loss, gain or maintenance, whereas tips 1 and 2 apply purely to those looking to shed body fat. Remember, once you have reached your ideal weight, I highly recommend you convert to eating the actual required calories to match your current AMR (Active Metabolic Rate) to prevent you putting any weight back on. In addition, I also recommend rechecking your BMR and AMR every 4 weeks using the tools mentioned above as these will both change when following a calorie controlled plan. Lastly, please remember diets and calorie planners as shown above are put in place to help you achieve over the short term and, are not a long-term lifestyle choice. If any reader needs further guidance on achieving their dream beach body this summer, please do not hesitate to contact me for free through my website seanburgesspt.com.
‘Gocycle’ electric bike from Kairos eMotion Summer has now arrived and with the warmer weather making us all come out of hibernation, outdoor living and enjoying our incredible part of our island is high on the agenda. In this month’s ‘special kitbag’ we are featuring a very cool bicycle which turns heads, not only for its funky design, but because of the speed you see it whizzing by! When we were asked to ‘test drive’ the award winning ‘Gocycle’ bikes from the top guys at Kairos eMotion, we jumped at the chance, donned our helmets and took to the stunning promenade at Bournemouth Beachfront to try them out for the first time. We were kindly given a full weekend to experience the bikes and report back on their function, with the ‘FUN’ part of function certainly dominating the weekend. That first evening, with the views of the beautiful sunset across the Purbecks for a backdrop, we got pedalling and loved the ‘pedal torque sensing’ which identifies when you are in motion and sets the motor to kick in. The clever bikes link to a downloadable app where you can change the levels of assistance from the electric motor. We had two bikes set up quite differently, one requiring some, however, not much, effort and one requiring slightly more effort before the motor assisted. You don’t just sit there and let the bike do the work. It does require you to keep pedalling whilst it quietly assists you along the way.
You really got that feeling of the bike kicking in and pulling you along. It was fun, exhilarating and still a good form of exercise.
10
1
The gears are simple and easy with push button controls. You have three levels of gears with the added boost button when you need that little extra help. The electronic gear shift and auto shifting when slowing down was incredibly smooth without that potential clunky feeling you get on some standard pedal bikes.
2
The easy to read display on the handlebars shows the charge left on the battery, the gear you are in and a guide of the speed you are travelling. With the hydraulic brakes system providing smooth and reactive stops, the ride was easy with a padded, comfortable seat.
3
The clever iPhone app can adjust all the settings for the bike, such as setting your type of ride mode, regulating your speed, monitoring your battery charge, trip odometer and a ‘calories burned’ calculator.
4
The bikes fitted easily into The Game van but can be folded down and packed up to even fit into a boot of a Porsche Boxster. The ‘Gocycle’ is lighter than traditional electric bikes due to lightweight lithium-ion battery that is hidden away inside the frame of the bike. This battery has up to a 40 mile range. Maintenance free and a fully enclosed chain means no horrible oil marks on your trousers!
On the second day, a local hill with a steep incline, which would normally require masses of effort, sweat and exertion, was a complete breeze! We got from bottom to top with a small amount of effort thanks to the handy boost button and couldn’t believe it when we reached the top, still on the bikes. A weekend of turning heads, smiles on faces and people asking questions about the bike was one to remember. We travelled many miles across town, coast and country without any issue at all, in great comfort and above all, quickly and with immense fun!

The S The Game talks to Paul Webber, Poole based kitesurfer and firefighter at Westbourne Fire Station about the surf scene on the south coast. Name
Paul Webber Sport
Kitesurfing Sponsors
Thanks for talking to us, Paul... When did you first start kitesurfing and what got you into it? I started kiting in 2007 after my wife had given me a voucher for a lesson. What is it about kitesurfing that you love? Going head to head with Mother Nature. The windier and bigger the waves the better. It allows you to draw on elements from sports such as wake boarding, surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding, to name a few. What’s there not to like? Is it difficult to balance your time on the water with your work as a firefighter? Bit of a standing joke this one. I get a lot of ribbing from my friends over this one as it affords me an enviable amount of time off. Har har! My job can be very demanding and stressful, especially when dealing with traumatic emergencies. I’m extremely proud to be in the fire service and the free time sure is a bonus. Describe what it’s like when you have a perfect day out on the water… When the wind is strong and the waves are big, I’ll grab my smallest kite and strapless surfboard. That feeling of being beating down a big wave and getting some nice carves from it is incredible, then turning off it and heading back out to hunt down the next wave and start it all over again.

Agent 8 & King of Watersports
Do you take part in any competitions? No. I’m way too old! Where is your favourite spot locally to do your sport? Branksome Dene. The beach is lovely and the waves can be really good. What’s your best or favourite trick? Favourite tricks tend to be the new ones I’m learning. So, at the moment, I’m trying to emulate the tricks my friends are doing on their strapless boards. My best trick on the twin tip is a backroll with a kite loop and a nose grab on the board. They all have names but I’ve no idea what this is called. An age thing… Have you ever been in any bad accidents? Broken ribs on both sides and a metacarpal in the left hand. Oh and my pride! Do you take part in any other water sports? I have a paddleboard but really on use it when I go to Devon or Cornwall where the real waves are. What do you think of our surroundings locally in Poole and Bournemouth and along the coast? It’s such a fantastic place to live. What isn’t there to like about it? Beautiful sandy beaches, miles of coastline, the huge harbour, the Purbecks and The New Forset on your doorstep.
LEFT PHOTOGRAPH: RUSSELL FARRINGTON / RIGHT PHOTOGRAPH: PETE HAZELL OF WINDSPORTUK
well Which surf/wind reports to you use to check out conditions locally? Usually WindGuru and XC Weather. Between the two, I’ll pick the best looking forecast and keep my fingers crossed that I’ve picked the right one. Tell us about your equipment and which brands you like to use? I have three kites to cover the wind range(6mtr, 9mtr & 12mtrs). The smallest being for when it’s the windiest and the 12mtr for lighter days, surfboard and a twin tip. The twin tip is my trick board. Virtually all my equipment is branded by Cabrinha. I find the quality and performance to be excellent. The kites are truly amazing. One of the best all round kites out on the market because I enjoy all the elements of kitesurfing: wake-style, free-style and wave riding, I find these kites to be best performer. What do you recommend to anyone reading who might want to give it a go? Go and have a lesson, try lots and lots of brands and ask as many people as you can as to what they like. Lastly, go watch some good kiters to get inspired and see what equipment they are using. You want to make sure you have the right equipment so take you time.
Where can we find you relaxing locally when you’re not on the water or at work? Playing golf. Another addictive sport. Have you kitesurfed abroad, if so, where is your favourite place? I’ve only kited abroad twice, once in Tenerife and the other was Australia. Favourite spot ever was Flatrock. It’s a quiet little spot just outside of Byron Bay, Australia. Best waves I’ve ever kited. Super consistent wind and heaps of sun. Finally, where in the world would you most like to kitesurf that you haven’t yet? Maui, Hawaii. I heard this place is heaven. The owner of Cabrinha lives there and one day I would like to meet him and go for a kite with him. What this guy has achieved is truly awesome. Thanks for talking to us, Paul and we wish you all the best with your future.

WE’RE SPEAKING TO LOCAL WOMEN INVOLVED IN DIFFERENT SPORTS ACROSS THE AREA TO FIND OUT THEIR MOTIVATION, PASSION AND STORY ABOUT THEIR DESIRE TO COMPETE NAMES: Jess Grimson and Vicky Palmer SPORT: Beach Volleyball Jess and Vicky play volleyball as part of the Wessex Ladies team and as a duo, are the current English Beach Volleyball team. They are in full time training and working towards competing in domestic tours and international events. We caught up with them to find out more about their sport and what their aims are for the future. England was drawn by the CEV to fill the final place of host nations. The Continental Cup is an Olympic Qualification tournament that is played out in a series of rounds. The first round has been confirmed to be held in Bournemouth (20th-21st June), this is the first time ever for the event to be held in the United Kingdom and it will be the most recent major event following on from the London 2012 Olympics hosted at Horse Guards Parade. Hi ladies, how did you both first get into volleyball? J: My PE teacher used to play for England and asked me to play; out of all the sports I played, I found volleyball the most difficult so I stuck at it! V: My mum used to play local league and got me interested. I then joined Wessex Volleyball at age 13. …and when did you start playing Beach Volleyball? J: I had played recreationally but like Vicky, I moved to Bath because I knew the GBR programme was based here. From then, I was selected to represent GBR at the World U21’s so this is when I started full time training. V: I moved to Bath University when I was 18, this was my first introduction. In my second year the GBR programme moved to Bath and this was when I took it up properly.
14
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
You were selected to represent England in Canada last year, how did that feel? J+V: We were really honoured to be selected to represent our country last year for an international exhibition. We got to play against some of the top teams in the world and it has inspired us to get out and do more international events this year. How often do you train and what is your usual training regime? J + V: We usually do 4 sand sessions and 2 gym sessions, during the summer we would have competitions over the weekends. We would like to do more but as a self-funded programme we both work full time at the LeAF Elite Athlete Academy. What is the best way to relax after a tough game or training session? J: I don’t have a specific regime but have a shower, a good meal and get some sleep ready for the next training day! V: I like to have a hot bath, get in my PJ’s and get an early night, crazy I know! Do you take part in any other sports? J: Not anymore, I used to play a lot of sports but mainly football, to quite a high level but as a new exciting endeavour, I chose Volleyball to move forward with. V: I used to play a lot of sports but struggle to find the time around our busy schedule. This last year I have played netball for my sister’s team, it helps maintain my fitness. How do you balance your working careers with your training and competing? J+V: We are very lucky with the organisation that we work for (LeAF) as they have been very accommodating to our schedule. Especially our Executive Principal who has been extremely supportive and encouraged us to stay competing, facilitating our achievements so far. What are your hopes and goals for the future? Is Rio 2016 part of that? J+V: An Olympics is always a dream for any athlete but as a fairly new team in training we are trying to focus on the processes and short term goals that could in turn get us there! Can you describe in three words what Volleyball means to you? J: Community, Passion and Enjoyment! V: Fun, Sun and Friends!
Jess and Vicky can be followed on: Twitter: @PalmerGrimson and Facebook: /PalmerGrimson and email: PalmerGrimson@gmail.com
What would you recommend to people wanting to give Volleyball a go? J+V: There are many local clubs that you can join and they will accommodate all levels! We are slightly biased but Wessex Volleyball Club is one of the top junior programmes in the country. All we can say is give it a try and we can guarantee you won’t look back! Thank you for talking to us. We wish you continued success with your sport in the future.
The 7th year of the 7s #Party of The Year
What do you get if you take one huge venue, 366 sports teams, 3,000 campers, 20,000 party people, some major sporting stars, buckets full of banter, stacks of entertainment, delicious food and the odd giant beer tent or ten? The answer happened over the late May Bank Holiday weekend and boy, what a weekend it was. ight on our doorstep, the locally grown Bournemouth 7s Festival celebrated the end of the sports season and the official start to summer in its true unique style. Following the last six years worth of festivals, the 7th year of the 7s had a lot to live up to. But, with a driven and experienced team behind the scenes planning the festival out in meticulous detail, this one was clearly the best yet. New to 2014 was Hockey 7s, extending the sports side of the festival further to welcome a new lease of life to the line up. The Dodgeball, once again, was hugely popular with fast paced action watched on by hundreds surrounding the caged enclosure. The Animal WD40 Action Sports team performed some breathtaking stunts whilst the Netball courts were teeming with top teams from around the UK. The rugby games were obviously a huge part to the weekend with it attracting all levels from top flight professional players to professional pub goers all battling it out on the pitches around the ground. But, it’s not just a sports festival; the music is a key part to the individuality of the event and combining the two just works so well. The incredible Oasis tribute band literally blew festival-goers away on the main stage with a brilliant performance, whilst DJs played thumping sets to raise the roof in the Kopperberg Big Top Dance Tent.
PHOTO: WWW.ALEXPHOTO.CO.UK
Created by Roger ‘Dodge’ Woodall, a former professional rugby player, the festival has evolved and built year on year to become the largest sports and music festival in the world. We caught up with Roger at the festival to get his thoughts on this year’s event, “We’ve been planning this event for 365 days, literally since the last one finished. We’re always pushing boundaries with more arenas, more sports, more people…we put on an amazing show here and everyone absolutely loved it!”
“WE’RE NOW PLANNING FOR NEXT YEAR AND WE’LL TAKE IT TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL!” Roger Woodall, CEO Diamond Sporting Group, Bournemouth 7s Festival, Viper 10 Sportwear
Campers arrived Friday evening and pitched their tents whilst the heavens opened. But, rain didn’t stop play both on the field and around the festival and although it was a very soggy start to Saturday, it certainly didn’t dampen the spirits of the teams and partygoers – a UK festival without a bit of mud thrown in isn’t a true festival, right?! Wellies were certainly the ‘must wear’ essential for the weekend but the theme of lederhosen vs zoo party turned heads with the fabulous and funny creations worn by the festival-goers who partied like they really meant it. The welcome sunshine on Sunday dried out the mud and thousands enjoyed soaking up the sun and the sport in the buzzing atmosphere. Many major sports legends were spotted playing and partying over the weekend and enjoying the energy of the festival. Each year, the Bournemouth 7s Festival just keeps on getting better and better and never fails to impress the revellers and teams which travel from all over the country to play and party at the famous weekend. With this year’s tents, trucks and teams packed away for another 12 months, we bid the Party of The Year farewell and say ‘bring on 2015’!

WITH RACHEL LAMBON CHRISTCHURCH TENNIS FACILITY This month, we’re talking to local tennis professional, Rachel Lambon who is Director and Head Coach at Christchurch Tennis Facility. Rachel comes from a tennis loving family with her Mum, Dad, sister and husband who are all players of the game. Rachel has been coaching for over 13 years and is a keen sports fan coaching football and swimming as well as playing netball and enjoying cycling. Hi Rachel...Tell us about how you first got involved... I first started playing tennis with my Dad when I was 12 on the Rose Bruford grass tennis courts in Kent. I was a late starter but had played various other sports previously so I took to it quickly and the challenges of the game excited me and made me want to play more. I took my Coaching qualification in November 2001 (aged 18) and qualified as a DCA coach. From there, the game, plus the players and parents I worked with, made me more driven to give back to tennis the fantastic experiences I had as a child. What is it about tennis that you love? The fact that today everyone can pick up a racket despite age, ability or experience and can play the game. It appeals to all and we have so many more children and adults playing and enjoying their time on court because it’s affordable and accessible. I can’t deny that I also love the pro side of the game too! To become a tennis player, you need to have more than these qualities; passion, drive, determination, commitment,
18
WWW.THEGAMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK
stability and also be an athlete with a killer instinct. Plus, the fact that you must also aspire to be a role model for all and play fairly and by the rules (tennis has a lot of rules!). Tell us about any highlights and achievements from your work… As a club, we have been nominated twice for Dorset LTA Club of the year award plus, I have won ‘Coach of the Year’ for Dorset LTA and ‘Coach of the Month’ nationally which was a huge achievement. We have a great team of coaches at Christchurch and we pride ourselves on the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We literally welcome anyone to pick up a racket and have a go. You’re now Head Coach and Director of Christchurch Tennis Facility... how did that come about? From 2001 – 2008 I worked as a self-employed tennis coach in the Dorset area, including, David Lloyd Ringwood, Mudeford Wood TC, Branksome, Dorchester TC, local Schools and Hotels. I was also doing a few hours on the Christchurch Tennis Facility site. When the previous coach moved on and the lease came up, I grabbed it with both hands and went into to business with another coach (and friend) in the area Emma Cooper. We worked solidly for 2 years, increasing the site from its 20 weekly playing members to over 150. It was a hard 2 years, but extremely rewarding and I wouldn’t change anything. Emma moved on after 2 years to focus on her Pilates Instructor Lessons which
she is fabulous at and I still attend her sessions each week. Since then the club has continued to grow and we stand with over 200 members (which is almost full!) What does your role involve? My role is very diverse and covers many different areas – but I think that’s normal for a business director! I work with my coaching team to ensure we have the best quality coaching in the area and best customer service. One of my main annoyances is ‘clicky’ tennis clubs and I have worked hard to make sure ours does not feel like this. I also coach around 10-15 hours per week, mainly working with performance juniors – one of my players aged 9 ranked 1 (Milly Davis,) travelled to Cardiff for a Grade 3 Tournament and won last week – a fantastic achievement! Along with that, I do day-to-day administration and run tournaments and leagues at CTF. Along with our new service to schools (Atorro Sports) which helps schools with the overall PE delivery and other aspects such as lunchtimes and Sports Days, I can say I’m pretty busy! Tell us about what the club has to offer… The junior section of the club (2 ½ -18) is well established and we have a lot of regular coaching groups as well as pay and play sessions. One of the latest offerings is ‘Teeny Tots Tennis’ for the under 5s. It is a great introduction to sports as we focus on throwing, catching and holding a racket; it’s also a fantastic social environment for the kids (and parents). We are really proud of what we are doing to develop these sessions and it’s great to see kids starting so young. I have also taken a lot of pride in building the adult side of the club, we have a fantastic membership which includes some free weekly sessions and free court hire, and the best bit is we are doing this for just £65 annually. One of my biggest motivations is to make tennis more affordable and accessible and this is really working. Is tennis good for general fitness and how hard is it get going? It is unbelievable for fitness! The best bit is that you don’t even realise you’re having a work out as you’re too focused on the game. It’s really easy to get started in tennis; we have plenty of beginner groups all the way to advanced sessions, or even
individual coaching. The beginner sessions are great if you have never played before, because it’s the same for everyone in the group. We focus on having fun and the enjoyment of learning the game. A big initiative at the moment is ‘Cardio Tennis’. This is aimed at both regular players and complete beginners. It’s a fantastic workout to music whilst integrating a tennis focus. It’s the latest craze hitting the fitness scene and we are really pushing it hard as we can see the benefits of it. With Wimbledon starting at the end of June, do you see more people inspired to get involved around this time of the year? Wimbledon is fantastic and we always see an increased number of players taking to the courts. Last year, Andy Murray winning was fantastic, and we have seen plenty of new players sign up as result of being so inspired, despite never having played before. I’m looking forward to watching the pro’s again this year – good luck to Andy. What would you recommend to people reading this who may want to give tennis a go and what kit they need? Give it a go! We offer the first coaching session completely free so there is no reason not to. You don’t need any specialist kit either, just a pair of trainers. We can provide the racket for your first few sessions and then help you choose a racket to suit you (these can be bought for around £50). Some of our programmes included a free racket for you to keep, thanks to grants and lottery funding - we are really trying to remove any barriers there to get people started. Also, if you have played before and you’re ready for matches, you can compete in doubles tennis, or even in the Dorset Leagues as part of our team of players. We have a great and welcoming team section and we encourage everyone to compete. With the increased number of players competing, we now have teams in various divisions in the league and we can fit you in to the most appropriate standard. Finally, sum up in three words what tennis means to you… Addictive, inspiring and inclusive.

So, since Exerformance are all about working with you to IMPROVE your performance - here are our 5 golden rules for recovery: GET MORE SLEEP! Getting enough sleep is the easiest way to boost endurance performance. It’s crucial to maximize deep, restorative sleep time, which happens in the first few hours of sleep each night.
With the London Marathon starting the season of what seems to be an ever increasing number of exciting ‘endurance events’ – and by that we mean events taking over 90 minutes – including anything from the popular mud runs to half marathons and cycle sportives, we thought we’d devote some wise words to recovery.
Though butterflies and adrenaline can contribute to an uneasy night of pre-race sleep - especially if you’ve set the alarm for 3:30am - it’s important to make adequate sleep a regular part of your lifestyle. You’ve set yourself a goal, make sleep a part of achieving it! A 91 year old triathlete from Florida, attributes his race longevity in part to going to bed at 9:30 and waking at 7. Yes that may be unrealistic for most working adults, but there’s no doubt most of us should make time for more sleep. EAT WELL RECOVER WELL! Good nutrition is key for all areas of performance – and also a key part of recovery. Rather than heading for the beer immediately after a running event or triathlon – we’d say take advantage of that 30-minute post-race recovery period when your body is craving nutrients to replenish itself. Give your body what it needs when it’s most open and able to absorb it. Consume a shake, energy bar, piece of fruit, and/or sports drink immediately following a workout or race. Do this before anything else! The food or supplement you choose should provide about 0.8 gram of carbs per kilogram of body weight and 0.4 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight.
Many endurance athletes are a stubborn bunch – could this be you we’re talking to? Preferring to constantly push themselves with tough workouts day after day. That’s what endurance is about after all isn’t it? Yes, and No… It’s impossible to go all-out all the time. You won’t train as effectively and you’ll likely break down with injuries and niggles. So, if you can focus on having high-quality rest and recovery, you’ll get far more from every minute of each workout. HERE ARE THE FACTS: Recovery • increases your energy levels • boosts your immune system • helps you get the most out of each training session • improves your hormone profile • decreases inflammation • improves tissue quality • reduces the number of overuse injuries you may experience
REHYDRATE It’s impossible not to want water following a race or workout, and ideally you should drink 500ml for every ½ kilo lost during exercise. But you can jump start your recovery and optimise performance by staying hydrated throughout the day as a matter of course – not just on the days you are training. Keep a water bottle with you, aim to drink at least 2 litres per day, and keep an eye on your urine colour. It should be pale straw coloured. If not, drink more water! GET A MASSAGE Wouldn’t it be great to get a professional massage after every race or training session! Since that’s not usually practical or affordable, do some self-massage with a foam or trigger point roller – or a tennis/hockey ball. Cold plunges whilst not particularly pleasant also are a very effective way to jumpstart recovery – fill a cold bath before your training session or race so it’s there waiting for you on your return! STRETCH IT OUT PNF – or facilitated stretching is ideal post workout. Try this: Lie on your back. Feet on the floor knees up. Raise one leg towards vertical and wrap a long strap/belt or skipping rope around the sole of the foot. Slowly straighten the leg upwards, and hold. Use the rope to gently assist the stretch to about 10 to 20 percent more than your body would normally move. Now try this. Sit on the floor – legs outstretched – wrap the strap around the sole of one foot at a time and use the strap to pull yourself forward towards your foot.

Chill out venue of the month Chill out in Bikram Yoga’s very own Pulp Kitchen and enjoy a freshly made, nutrient packed and refreshing drink from their Juice Bar. Chill out track of the month Perfectly chilled remix to relax your mind – Jamie xx ‘Far Nearer’ Fact of the month – Body Temperature Your ability to burn fat goes hand and hand with metabolic enzymes. However, metabolic enzymes do not work as well when your body temperature is low. It is said that in order to activate metabolic enzymes to their maximum potential, your body temperature should be above 96.8 degrees. In other words, when your body temperature is below normal, metabolic enzymes have little effect on your fat metabolism. When you exercise, you naturally raise your body temperature. This is one of the main reasons that you sweat when you work out. This is a good thing. On the one hand, raising your body temperature helps you to get rid of toxins that build up in your body. By raising your body temperature and using a lot of energy during exercise, you actually give yourself more energy. Because your body temperature has risen, you have all the energy you need to get things accomplished. It is the reason you usually feeling so good about yourself following exercise.

ASAHI BRITISH BEACH POLO CHAMPIONSHIP 2014 SANDBANKS BEACH FRIDAY 11TH AND SATURDAY 12TH JULY As a highlight of the South coast’s summer season, the Asahi British Beach Polo Championship will return to Sandbanks, Poole for its seventh year on the 11/12thJuly 2014. Supported by some of the best arena polo players the hotly anticipated beach festival promises more excitement and glamour both on and off the pitch. England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales will be competing with England keen to retain the title after a gripping final against Wales last year.
Arena polo is a spectacular spectator sport and played on a stunning Blue Flag beach (preferably sundrenched!) brings the very best out of the players and guests. The thorough bred ponies and high goal players love playing on the beach in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd. Jack Kidd who is a regular for England at the Championships says ‘I have been lucky enough to play polo all round the world – Sandbanks is still one of my favourite weekends of the year. The polo is insanely competitive, the guests are always on great form and the beach parties, well – they are simply the best!’ Whether visitors are dining in the waterfront Sandpolo Hospitality marquee, enjoying the exclusive VIP experience, soaking up the atmosphere with General Admission tickets, or just choosing to sit outside the fence on the purpose built beach viewing area, it is a chance for polo and Sandbanks to show off its attributes to about 5000 seasoned and new supporters each year. To complement the polo, The Asahi British Beach Polo Championship offers a host of other activities such as ‘have a go’ polo, the Oakley Ladies Beach Volleyball, the charity Audi V Polo Pony race and the vibrant retail village. The polo is an excuse to dress up (or strip off for a quick swim), stay up late and indulge. So, why does the Championships keep returning to Poole? Johnny Wheeler says ‘a cooperative council and a large, stunning, easily accessible beach are the vital ingredients for us as event organisers. Some good weather, the best polo players and an enthusiastic crowd is pretty important too’. Find out more > www.sandpolo.com

This month, we speak to Brandon Phillips who holds a black belt in kickboxing and who is making a real hit with his skills in the ring. Trained by pro kickboxer and father of the star, Ross Phillips, we find out how he became one of the youngest black belts in the country, what his hopes are for the future and what he loves about the sport. Hi Brandon, thanks for speaking to us. How and when did you first get into kickboxing? I was just two years old and only just walking. I used to copy my dad and he started holding pads for me to punch and kick. My dad has this on video and on his facebook. What is it about kickboxing that you love the most? I like the sparring bit the most. That is when I am in the ring with someone my own size and getting to use all the things I practise. Congratulations to you and your sister for gaining your black belts at such a young age, how hard was it to achieve that level? It wasn’t too hard as we both trained very hard most days to pass each grade. We both found the first couple the hardest because we were so nervous about being examined. We took all our grades at the Bull Dog Gym, not at our dad’s gym. Our dad said we were ready to start grading months before we started but we were too nervous to actually do it. We ended up passing 16 different grades before we got to our black belts.
Tell us about any recent wins/competitions? Well, my sister and I were both due to fight in a show in Bournemouth a couple of months ago. We were meant to be fighting another brother and sister, but they pulled out last minute so we ended up fighting each other. They called it a draw but I think I won! We also both took part in what is called ‘interclub’ not long ago and both loved it, there is no winner in these matches. Do you take part in any other sports? I play football for the school but I mainly just train kickboxing every night in the gym. I seem to get hurt playing football and then can’t do kickboxing so I don’t play it more than just for the school team. What is it like training with Dad? Dad has always been our coach from day one and was our only coach through our gradings. He is great to me and helps me a lot. Now I am fighting he said, “I need to mix my training up as much as possible and train with others to gain more experience”. My dad runs a fight team so I now train with other people in the gym. I have my dad and another three people he trusts helping me out. I would just like to thank them for all their help; James Cornick, Dan Winstanley and Garret Grant. What are you training for now? I’m training for two K1 fights the 1st in Bournemouth on August 16th and the 2nd in Southampton 15th November, both fight nights are run by the Phoenix Fight Night promotions and are always great shows, so I am excited to be part of them. I am only 8 so we don’t hit to the head, its punches, knees and kicks to the body and legs only. The August fight is really my first big fight on a big show in front of over 1000 people. Talk us through your training regime... I would train every day but my dad won’t let me. So, I train five times a week. I train with my dad twice, and then I train twice in the week with the fighters in the gym. They all help me a lot. I also train myself, I shadow box, do many sit ups and lots of other exercises and I love to skip with my jump rope and work with the bag. I hit Thai pads a lot and practise my kicks and knees with my dad wearing a body shield. He has to be on his knees for me to do this so he moans a lot because he is old! I have also been going to HOP gym every Thursday in Charminster as I can spar with the boys there and it tests me a lot more than sparring people I know. I find it hard but it will make the fights seem a little easier. I would also like to thank Andy Lawrence, Gaz and Leo for their help. …and what do your friends at school think about your talent? I don’t really talk about it too much at school because I have done it all my life. But everyone knows I kickbox and my dad trains quite a few people from my school too so they see me in the gym. Some are coming to watch me on the night. What would you recommend to other young people reading this who may want to try kickboxing? Call my dad at NRG Boxing or just find a local club and try it, it’s great fun. Can you describe in three words what kickboxing means to you? Fun, fun, fun! Finally, what are your hopes for your future with your sport? I just want to keep training to get better and to make sure I stay better than my sister! I also hope to win all my fights. Thank you for talking to us Brandon. We wish you lots of success in your future and will be keeping an eye on your progress.

HOPEFULLY, THIS GROUP WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR A LONG TIME AND TO BE LEADING THAT IS A SPECIAL FEELING. Thanks for talking to us Tommy. What a season for AFC Bournemouth! How has it been for you this year? It’s been good. Obviously, we started well but then hit a bit of a barren patch which was hard but we never lost our faith in our ability and how our season could pan out. In the end, we came up a bit short for the play offs but there’s plenty to look forward to for the future. There was probably an expectation, as there is with any newly promoted team, that the main priority was to stay up. You have massively exceeded those expectations haven’t you? Yes, I think so. Early on, our form and how we were playing proved that we deserved to be in this league and then, I think the doubters came back when we didn’t win as many games as we would have liked to just before Christmas. However, we picked up nicely and a lot of people were tipping us to go up again but it’s just a little bit unfortunate we ran out of steam and missed the play offs. Nevertheless, the future is definitely bright. How have you found the step up from League 1 to Championship? Things are a little bit quicker and you get punished for your mistakes a little bit more but we’ve got a great dressing room, a great togetherness and a philosophy, not many teams can say they’ve got all of them. When you put all of that into the mix, it’s a powerful blend and as you have seen recently, we got a little bit of momentum together and we were a hard team to stop. When you joined in 2012, you quickly settled into the heart of the defence and then gained the captaincy, how did that feel? It was a massive honour. Leadership is always a big part of my game whether I am captain or not but it was obviously a great honour, especially at this time with the club doing so well. Hopefully, this group will be remembered for a long time and to be leading that is a special feeling. Do you feel it made a difference to your game? No, I try to be the same whether I am captain or not. Obviously, being a centre half, a lot of the skills are about talking and leadership so whether I am captain or not, it doesn’t make a difference to me. I just try to lead by example both on and off the pitch. You’ve said that your move to Bournemouth was one of the best decisions of your career. Do you see a long future here? Yeah, I hope so. I only have a year left on my contract we will see what the manager’s thoughts are on that. It’s a progressive club and going in the right direction. There’s not many clubs that can say that so I hope so. Eddie Howe made an instant impact on his return to the club, how much of a difference does he make to the team? He made all the difference last year. You could see, we were struggling for confidence and struggling to win and he quickly helped change that. He is the spearhead of everything we are doing as a club and with the group at the age we are, it’s all going in the right direction and bodes well for a positive future.

What is the banter like within the squad? It’s good; we’ve got a real tight knit group we spend a lot of time together on and off the pitch. We’re all similar ages so it’s a good mix and everyone is happy. We were a bit down that we didn’t quite make the play offs but as our first year in the Championship goes, we’ve got plenty to look forward to next year. Who are the main jokers? Harry Arter. Simon Francis. There’s a few! Ryan Fraser is a character. It’s a good mix. What has been your personal highlight from this season? Probably, Reading away. It was a good catalyst for the good stuff we went on to do this season and a great victory. Liverpool was a good experience and we took a lot of confidence from that because we went toe to toe with one of the best teams in England this year and didn’t come up too short, so another positive sign. Who are the best team you have come up against this year? It has to be Liverpool, but in terms of the Championship, Leicester was probably the best. They had a bit of everything - a lot of pace and power and definitely gave us plenty to think about. What are your ambitions for the next season? We want to surpass what we did this year. We’ve laid good foundations and made a great benchmark to go better next year and take that momentum on. With the World Cup about to start, how do you think England will get on? It’s been relatively quiet in the build up so I hope that plays into our hands a bit - maybe slipping under the radar. We’ve got some great, young talent coming through especially down this way with Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw. It’s exciting, not just from the country’s point of view but from the south’s point of view with Southampton being so close. It will be interesting to see how they get on. Do you think we can win it, if not, who will? You never know, a lot will depend on luck. The climate will be a big challenge. But, again it’s momentum and if we have a good build up and can win our first game, then why not? If it’s not us, I think Brazil on home turf will go close. Spain will be looking to do something unique and you can never write Germany off. QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS Who is the best player you have played against this season? Suarez Who is the best player in the world? Ronaldo followed by Messi Who is your best mate in football? Craig Noone in Cardiff If you weren’t a footballer what would you have been? Plumber Do you have any pre-match superstitions? Too many to start! Describe AFC Bournemouth fans in one sentence…They have been amazing and when we got on a roll, a lot of it was down to the atmosphere they created and how they made us feel. In Bournemouth, what are your favourite places to: Eat: Limewood Hotel in the New Forest. Chill: Starbucks in Westbourne. Play: Back home in Brighton.

The Jobs Coach HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN AN INTERVIEW regurgitating the website. Remember, the people interviewing you know all this already so stand out and quote other news such as charities they support, affiliates they are involved with and recent events - and provide your opinion on each if possible. If you can link research to posts you’ve seen on Twitter or show that you’ve read their blog the company will be more than impressed to say the least. Julie Cook-Hughes, Managing Director & Founder of SOS recruitment
You never get a second chance to make the right first impression. However what happens after you submit your CV? A good recruitment agency will keep you posted on the status of it at all times. If you’re invited to interview, the recruitment agency will guide you through every step to make sure you know as much about the people that are interviewing you as possible and how they like to operate. Working with a great recruitment agency is therefore crucial to your career steps. Mastering a few simple techniques could secure you that all-important, sought-after job so it’s essential you take this advice on board. Put simply, competition is higher than ever in the current economic climate so make sure you do everything you can to stand out. Research The permanent consultants at SOS recruitment recommend researching the employer details as much as possible. This might seem obvious but they don’t just mean history, background or general information as you will be doing nothing different than
Handshake There’s a real truth about a good handshake combined with effective eye contact. A handshake to remember is firm and equal to the other person; placing your hand on top or below is a sign of dominance or subservience. Extend your arm and go in for the handshake-welcome, whilst looking up, making eye contact and engaging with your audience. Stating your name and the all-important ‘Nice to meet you’ at the same time will work wonders. The interviewer will like and respect your confidence and take these as positive traits that you are friendly, open, welcoming and approachable. Body Language & Dress Code How you express yourself goes far beyond the words you use. Research shows that 55% of a first impression is based on visual impact. Consequently it is key that your dress code is spot on; scruffy dress creates a bad impression and poor body language can hint at traits such as deceitfulness, nervousness, boredom or aggression. If you are being interviewed by more than one person, maintain eye contact with the full interview panel. As your interviewer explains the opportunity
With The Game’s resident jobs coach, Julie Cook-Hughes
to you, show a positive reaction by nodding and smiling. Regarding dress code this is a business opportunity so dress to impress – it’s as simple as that. You need to dress in business wear; men should wear ties and be cleanly shaven. You’d be surprised how many people forget about their shoes so ensure you have clean, shiny or even new shoes if possible. Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses This point is very important and shows the potential employer that you know yourself and can be confident on both strengths and weaknesses in the workplace. Some people think you shouldn’t reveal weaknesses but in fact the opposite is true. The trick lies in recognising something that could be a strength but in disguise. For example, that you work too much or you’re a perfectionist. Therefore practice beforehand and know exactly what you are going to say. The potential employer does not want to hear weaknesses such as you have a low attention span, that you’re late to work or have trouble accepting authority! These are big no-no’s. Take this as the time to position a weakness positively and go one step further to outline how being employed by the company that is seeing you would help you develop as a person, gain extra qualifications, extra training and support, learn a new language or allow you to build on a skill you need. Positioning yourself at the company in question and what you think you can learn from them will go down very nicely. It also shows you are willing to learn and advance with
Don’t Cave Under the Pressure Now that you’re in the interview room this is your time to shine so don’t ruin it by panicking or caving under the pressure. Our tips are to take deep breaths whilst you are waiting, talk slowly and communicate clearly. Under interview pressure it’s easy to get carried away by talking too fast or too much; slow down and keep it relevant. Keep your answers concise but be ready to expand
on information and don’t just give yes or no answers. This could be your one and only chance to impress the interviewer so show them you are rational, composed and think your answers through. This is your opportunity to highlight the best examples of yourself so don’t rush through these positive points – use your time wisely and get the employer to concentrate on your every word.
the company, which they will respect. Assuming you are an intelligent person you should be aware of your own strengths and weaknesses, and by stating them will highlight to the employer what you are really made of. Give Specific Examples You’d be shocked at how many candidates, when asked, can’t relay one specific example about something they have done. Immediately, this will place you a few steps back. Interviewers want to hear how you dealt with a tricky situation, met sales targets, or dealt with tight deadlines. So many candidates state there are too many examples to give one, or that they can’t think of one; this is not beneficial as employers want to see you give exact, live examples on how you made the difference in the workplace. SOS recommends working examples such as times you’ve been a team leader and what you did when there was a problem, an example of how you took your initiative, managed to prioritise your workload or met stringent targets. If you work in sales how to close a deal is imperative along with live examples of figures and timeframes. If you’re a Manager specific examples of disciplining, leading by example, reporting to Directors or handling difficult situations will make you shine. See this as the opportunity to give evidence to the things you’ve stated on your CV. Examples of your performance really will make you a cut above the rest as you are demonstrating to the employer how you can make a difference to them. Last but by no means least… Thank the interviewer for their time and for seeing you. This is of the utmost importance. You’d do very well to back this up with outlining your ambitions to join the company so remind them why you’re interested in the role and what makes you a suitable candidate; even ask a couple of questions to demonstrate your level of interest and how keen you are. Employers appreciate you being keen so don’t be afraid to ask how long it might take to hear any news. The final factor is to leave on a high note saying that you would really like the position if you were offered it. This will reinforce your ambitions and desire to the employer and make that all-important lasting impression! If you’re looking to talk to somebody or to develop your career talk to SOS today. The SOS team are experienced, professional and approachable.... they’d love to hear from you!

MISSION NO. 20 Coasteering with Cumulus Outdoors Dan’s final mission with Poseidon last month was brilliant and he says he’ll definitely be trying kitesurfing again when he reaches the other side of the world! This month, our desk bound editor, Jo Whittaker grabbed her new role of ‘Have a go hero’ with both hands and was literally thrown in at the deep end with her first challenge of Coasteering. Usually found writing, interviewing and editing at her desk at The Game HQ, Jo will be attempting various challenges and reporting back on her experiences of some of the top activities available in our area.
Hi Jo, welcome to ‘Have a go hero’! How are you feeling about this new role? Thank you, (I think!). It’s very different for me to be the one being interviewed and to be away from my desk so I’m looking forward to reversing the roles a bit and getting out and about to try out some great local activities. Your first challenge is Coasteering at Dancing Ledge with leading outdoor activities company, Cumulus. What are your initial thoughts about this mission? Um, I’m quite nervous actually! I love the Purbecks and often visit the beautiful coastline but I’ve never been caving or ever jumped off ledges so this will be a big challenge for me. I’m not great with small spaces either so hoping I don’t get a claustrophobia attack! Do you like the water? Yes, when I’m ON it! I’m not the fittest of people at the moment and not particularly strong at swimming but having read our article last month about Coasteering and Cumulus, I am pleased that they have the highest safety standards and offer two expert instructors on their sessions as I think I may need a lot of guiding! Let’s do this!

AFTER… Well done Jo, you did it! That looked really good, how was it? It was amazing! What an experience. You really feel empowered when you jump into the water and it’s so good to see parts of the coast that you would never normally see. As soon as I got over the initial nerves and became used to swimming with all the gear on, I really started to enjoy it. What was the best and hardest parts of the session and why? BEST: The best part had to be exploring inside the caves. There was one called ‘the hidden cave’ where you had to get through a very small gap in the rocks which then opened up to a cave which was very dark. Then we swam around the back and out through another called the ‘triple cave’. The rock was pink on the walls and roof. It was appropriately named ‘the mermaid’s bedroom’. HARDEST: The guides told me about a small cave called ‘the washing machine’. From its name, I kind of thought it would be a challenge but actually going into it, made my heart thump! It was basically a cave which fills up with water and swirls around then empties out, hence the name. The tide pulled me inside the cave where you stand on a ledge then the idea is to catch a wave back out of the small entrance. I got a bit stuck and got a face full of sea and managed to swallow a fair amount! Was it hard swimming with all the kit on that you were wearing? It was to start with because I was doing it the wrong way. You’ve got a swim suit, rash vest, 5mm wetsuit, wetsuit socks, shorts (optional), trainers, a buoyancy aid, two pairs of gloves and a helmet on! Oh, and my ‘Have a go’ vest! It felt strange being in the water with all of that on and although the sea was very calm, there was still quite a strong current and it took a while to get used to swimming using your arms and letting your legs float out behind you. You feel very safe though with all the gear on.
How did you find your instructors? Russell, the founder of Cumulus and instructor, Jack were both excellent and were incredibly knowledgeable and calming when I had a couple of moments! I did my session with Jack’s Dad, Steve who had coasteered before so being a complete novice and having three guys who knew their stuff was comforting! Cumulus send out two guides on every session. One always keeps in front of you and one behind you so I felt confident the whole time that I was safe. They continually offered encouragement and guidance and the safety briefing at the start was really thorough. Did you enjoy exploring parts of the stunning coastline that people don’t usually get to see? It really does feel like a privilege to see the fossils up on the cave ceilings and to be able to safely jump off cliffs and ledges, was a big thrill. The day couldn’t have been better. It was really hot and sunny and after the walk in a wetsuit down to Dancing Ledge, jumping in the sea was amazing! Would you recommend Coasteering to people who might be interested and are you likely to try it again? I would 100% recommend Coasteering to anyone and the team at Cumulus were fantastic! You can do it from the age of 8 so I’ll definitely be back with my daughter who will be old enough this summer, she’s already got it on her birthday list! It’s a really good form of team building too so perfect for corporate days out or hen/stag daytime activities. Can’t wait to get back and try it again. Thanks so much to Russell, Jack and Steve for a brilliant experience. Well done Jo for completing your first challenge. Look out for her next one in the July issue. Hi Sarah! Thank you for talking to us. Wow, what a challenge!! How are you feeling about it all so far? To be totally honest, I’m exhausted!! I have a race almost every weekend, sometimes two! However, it feels amazing completing the races and knowing that I’m doing some good and raising money for a charity that’s very close to my heart. It’s keeping me very busy too! It’s an incredible feat which must be very emotional following the loss of your mother and grandmother. What made you decide to set this challenge and how did you go about planning it all out? I knew I wanted to do something a bit different and I’m very into my obstacle and muddy runs (part and parcel of being a soldier) so, I thought I’d combine it all! I set a realistic running target and decided how much I wanted to try and raise. I then started drafting emails and calling event companies to try and promote the run. What has been the hardest race so far? Spartan Beast, 100%! It was 17 miles of obstacles like monkey bars, water crossings, fire pits and log carries. To make it a bit harder, it was pouring down with rain and was about 4 degrees in the air. I was so cold and soaked through! Although, the Ironman was emotionally and physically demanding! …and your favourite? Probably, a Tough Mudder. They are great fun and a bit less serious than the others. I did it with a group of my friends and we had a good laugh running the 12 miles.
How are you managing to work it around your Army commitments? Work are very good. I do all my races at the weekends and in my spare time but they are very understanding when I come into work on a Monday and can hardly walk! (Following the Lake Fear race) Well done for completing Lake Fear! What did you think of the course? I thought it was brilliant! When it started and we were jumping through windows of old buildings, I was already smiling and it wasn’t even 1 mile in! The rain had ensured everything was good and muddy and that the stream was fast moving! Did you get good support from other runners? Yes lots, I managed to have a good chat with a few people before the run started, some of whom had never raced before and were curious about what to expect and some just to ask where I got my trainers from! Everyone helped each other on the run and I thought this was really nice, especially as some races can get very competitive! Would you recommend Lake Fear? Absolutely! It’s up there with my favourite races so far! It’s easy enough for people looking to start out obstacle racing, but some parts were tricky with tired legs! There was great atmosphere pre and post race (despite the weather) and it was well organised! A big thumbs up from me! How can people make a donation? I’m really trying to raise £5000 and you can help by going to www.justgiving. com/sarahnewey or you can simply text NEWE60 £10 to 70070 (It can be any amount between £5 and £10 and is just added to your phone bill). Every penny helps :)
SARAH NEWEY
We wish you the best of luck with your challenge.

This month, we speak to Sarah Newey, a soldier serving with Royal Signals. Sarah lost her mother and grandmother to cancer, both within the last 6 months. She decided to set out on a challenge…a BIG challenge with the help of cancer awareness charities and the British Army. Over the next 12 months, Sarah is attempting to run/swim/ cycle 1000 miles to raise £5000 for
Cancer Research UK. So far, Sarah has completed an Ironman, an Outlaw, four Spartan races (finishing in the top 4 and 6 females), a Wolf Run, X Runners, Rock Solid Races, Tough Mudders, countless obstacle races and a few 10k’s. She also ran the Camp Bastion half marathon in March whilst she was deployed to Afghanistan with the Army. She is also set to compete in The Great North Run, The London Triathlon,
The Birmingham Triathlon and the Outlaw Triathlon. With her total amount raised so far at £1600, the team at local extreme race company, Lake Fear Events, invited Sarah to take on the second of their gruelling races, Lake Fear 2: Nemesis which took place on 24th May. We caught up with Sarah pre and post event to find out more about her incredible task and ask her thoughts on Lake Fear Nemesis.
We were contacted by two local youth teams about the incredible season they had so we wanted to include this special article about their clubs and shout about their achievements. Well done to both teams and we’ll be watching out for you next season! #SupportLocal

The first leg of the treble was achieved with a 1-0 win over Bridport Youth FC in the Dorset Cup final and was followed up with a 4-3 extra time victory over Greenfields Youth FC in the Bournemouth League Cup final. The U14’s clinched their fifth league title in a row and completed a unique treble with a 4-1 win over Bournemouth Youth Poppies. LATEST NEWS
The Coleman Insurance Brokers sponsored Bournemouth Basketball club is continuing to dominate the competition in the Solent Area Basketball Association. The first team,‘The Bears’, have already sealed the premier championship after going 11 games undefeated and the second team, ‘The Razors’, are currently sitting at the top of Division 2 with just one loss. ‘The Bears’ have also been making noise nationally with a recent national cup win against Manchester in front of a sell-out crowd. ‘The Bears’ recently travelled to Portsmouth to play the Royal Navy national select side. The game was always going to be tough, with the Navy recently returning from a successful tour of the USA, they are a well drilled, physical side. The first half was a back and forth affair with both teams going on runs. Brinley ‘big foot’ John kept ‘The Bears’ close slicing through the Navy defence for 16 first half points. In the second half, Bears guard George Ghibril set the tone with back-to-back 3 point shots. Then captain, Liam Wyatt finished them off, hitting jump shots from all over the floor, finishing with 29 points. Wyatt had this to say after the 86-69 win, “They were a big, athletic side and they jumped out to a 10 point first quarter lead but we stayed focused, slowly chipped away and hit some big shots in the second half to silence the home crowd and pull out the win”. The clubs coach, Eric Bosence has been pleased with both teams approach the past 2 seasons. “With the support of Coleman Insurance Brokers, ‘The Bears’ and ‘Razors’ have been able to step up their games, we now practise twice a week and have the equipment required to succeed. Last year was our most successful season in over 20 years winning the Solent Area Premier league and cup, this year both teams are on course to do even better”. For anyone who would like to train with Bournemouth basketball club there are open practices at David English Leisure Centre on Mondays from 8-10. EXTRAVAGANCE
BMW: 4 SERIES GRAN COUPÉ
This month, a new member of the BMW 4 series family is unveiled - the 4 Series Gran Coupé, a new yardstick for elegance and extravagance. With a combination of stunning looks and typical BMW performance and innovative functionality, this new model exceeds expectations from every aspect. Built in the mould of the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé, its arrival sees BMW add a further scintillating premium midsize model to its 4 Series range. The new four-door coupé succeeds in melding the visual charm of the two-door coupé with the functional benefits offered by two extra doors, a wide-opening tailgate and the abundant space found within. At the same time, the principal dimensions and dynamic performance abilities are unchanged compared to the two-door coupé. The elongated roofline neatly brings out both the elegance and the extravagance of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. It is being launched with a choice of two highly refined and fuel-efficient engines. The BMW 435i Gran Coupé (fuel consumption urban/ extra-urban/combined: 11.4/6.2/8.1 l/100 km [24.8/45.6/34.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 189 g/km) is propelled by the range-topping six-cylinder in-line engine with an output of 225 kW/306 hp, while a lightweight four-cylinder unit delivering a mighty 180 kW/245 hp is the driving force behind the BMW 428i Gran Coupé (fuel consumption urban/ extra-urban/combined: 8.9/5.3/6.6 l/100 km [31.7/53.3/42.8 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 154 g/km). This second engine version is also being made available with the xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system from launch. Two four-cylinder diesel engines complete the range. The vehicle’s dynamic driving characteristics are emphasised by the optional Adaptive M suspension and the efficient, highperformance TwinPower Turbo engines. As on the outside, the interior of the first-ever BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé offers a perfect combination of elegance and functionality. This is demonstrated by the exclusive materials and colours used. As well as the elevated driver position, each operating element is ergonomically positioned to the driver’s best advantage and all surfaces and details exude a feeling of luxury and vitality. The doors with frameless windows enhance the impression of roominess inside the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé and the 2+1 rear seating offers plenty of head room and leg room. On top of all this, the wraparound design of the rear seats give rise to a comfortable and harmonious feeling of space.

CHERRIES “My aim now is to try and bring through the next generation of players for this club.”
STEPHEN PURCHES RETIRES FROM THE GAME FOLLOWING INJURY After more than 300 appearances over two spells at AFC Bournemouth, Stephen Purches has now retired from playing at the club but will remain in his coaching role. Purches recently visited a specialist who advised him to call time on his career on medical grounds. Purches suffered the injury in February 2012 and was on the sidelines for 18 months before returning to training during pre-season. Although the now retired development coach wasn’t included in a squad for a competitive match afterwards, he featured a number of times ahead of the 2013/14 campaign. He made his comeback in his testimonial match against former club West Ham United in July before making a substitute appearance a week later as Real Madrid visited the Goldsands Stadium. The former Leyton Orient captain will continue his role as development coach, but made the decision with his playing contract set to expire at the end of June.
“It’s never an easy decision to make, but it’s the right thing to do,” Purches told afcb.co.uk. “I’ve given it everything I’ve got to get to this point, but unfortunately I’m not quite back to where I want to be. The staff here have done everything they can though and I can run and kick a ball again, which is something that I wasn’t sure I would be able to do at one point. I’m so thankful to the club for the support they have given me, especially to Steve Hard for the work he has done. But I’m going into something that I have really enjoyed this season and want to take that on next season with 100 per cent focus”. He took up his first coaching position last summer and oversaw a successful season, with Harry Cornick, Baily Cargill and Brandon Goodship all signing long-term contracts. “It’s time to move on to the next chapter and a coaching career can be longer than a playing career, so I have a lot to learn and to look forward to. I want to be part of this club continuing to progress. That won’t be as a player, but it’s about the next generation and where they can take the club.” Wording courtesy of www.afcb.co.uk Pictures: AFC Bournemouth
