It’s that time of the year again when we look back and reflect on the events of the past 12 months. On Pages 32 & 33 Josephine Drew reflects on 2021 in the village of Competa. After reflection we attempt to make some resolutions for the year to come. In my opinion give yourself permission and equip yourself to have the resolve to tune out the clutter and not sweat the small stuff. I read this somewhere and rather liked it, “Our life is like a jar. If we fill it with sand, there’s no room to place rocks in it. But, if we put the larger rocks (more important things of life) in the jar first, then we can add sand (less significant items) later.” I also heard a quote the other day about no matter how busy you may be, take the time to be present in the moment and share your presence with those you are with. Find the time to put the phone down, make eye contact, and slow down to live in the moment. I think these things are really important to consider especially within our current environment of uncertainty still. What is certain is that The Grapevine Magazine comes out every month with relevant interesting articles about the area along with providing you with all the useful numbers you need, whether it is to book a restaurant or find a builder. I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and here is to another 12 editions of The Grapevine Magazine in 2022.

NEWS IN SPAIN

This Months Update

A

new campaign was launched on Wednesday to trace and bring to justice 12 of the United Kingdom’s most wanted fugitives believed to be hiding in Spain. The offenders are wanted for crimes including murder, largescale drugs trafficking and supplying firearms and ammunition. All the men featured on the campaign are believed to have links to mainland Spain and the Canary Islands. The UK National Crime Agency (NCA)’s Most Wanted campaign is run in conjunction with the independent charity CrimeStoppers, Spanish law enforcement and UK policing. It comes on the back of the successful Operation Captura campaign in Spain, which resulted in the arrest of 86 offenders. Spain is home to a large British community of at least 350,000 registered residents, and officials speaking at the campaign launch in Madrid sought to enlist citizen cooperation. “Spain is not a safe haven,” said Steve Rodhouse, the NCA’s director general of operations. “Many of these fugitives will be trying to blend in to the large British communities who have made their homes in Spain, and if you

are resident, you may know one of them from your town or village.”

A

34-year-old man has lost his life after suffering an accident on a ship in the Segovian town of Vallelado where, apparently, a large number of carrots fell on him, according to the Emergency Service of Castilla y León The events occurred when he was working in the agricultural warehouse when he was trapped by a shipment of carrots that fell on him. At 03.05 hours 112 was informed of an accident in a warehouse located at kilometer 101 of the CL-602, in Vallelado, where a worker had been injured when a large quantity of carrots fell on him and he was unconscious and trapped. The 1-1-2 operations room gives notice of the incident to the Civil Guard (COS) of Segovia, to the Segovia Fire Brigade and, by proximity, to the Fire Brigade of the Valladolid Provincial Council, who mobilize a crew, and to Emergencies Sanitarias-Sacyl, which sent a basic life support ambulance, a medical team from Cuéllar and a mobile ICU. Once on the scene, Sacyl staff confirmed the death of the 34-year-old man.

T

he Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, attacked against the campaign of the

Catholic Association of Propagandists that asks citizens to pray in front of the clinics where abortions are performed to dissuade women and said that praying there "is harassing women and goes against their fundamental rights". This is how she expressed herself, when asked about this campaign at the legal breakfast, organized by the Madrid Bar Association in which she participated. .The fundamental right to pray, to profess any religion is a right that must be preserved, when you harass a woman who is trying to exercise a fundamental right such as right to decide on their own body, even if you do it praying, you are harassing" , asserted the head of Equality.

T

he residents of Estepona have found a whale of more than twelve meters long stranded on the beach of La Rada , after it was found floating in the sea. The specimen is a fin whale, common in the Alboran Sea, which measures more than 12 meters long . The person in charge of the Aula del Mar and Center for the Recovery of Marine Species (CREMA), José Luis Mons, explained that they are going with a team to Estepona to analyze the located specimen, although from the images that the Estepona City Council has sent them it seems a fin whale by size. Of course, he was able to confirm that she has been dead for several days and in an advanced state of decomposition , since she appears with a swollen body. Mons points out that it is not frequent to find whales stranded on the beach "because there are few", but it does happen on some occasions. Of course, in most cases with the whales already dead.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Spanish Wills

A

will is one of the most common legal needs, but less than 25% of Europeans have one We are now finishing the year and it could be a good moment to think about making a Spanish will or update the existing one. As you may know, a will is not exclusively about making sure that the right people will inherit without disagreement or problems. It is a formal declaration of intention made by a person in his life-time of his wishes concerning the disposal of his property after his death. We understand the need to preserve and protect your assets and those of your family. If you have purchased or already have a property in Spain, we strongly recommend you making a Spanish will in order to facilitate the distribution of your Spanish assets. We have arranged many wills in Spain for foreigner people just like you and we believe that it is a

14 The Grapevine

satisfying part of life's planning and not something which should simply be left to chance. It is a good idea to talk to your family about it so they understand your issues and know what you want. It may help those around you to understand your wishes in distressing circumstances. In Spain, the signing of wills must be made by the testator in the presence of a Public Notary who will keep in his file the original document until the day of death, and will register it in the Spanish Central Registry of wills which is situated in Madrid. If you have already made a will in Spain, please note that your financial and familiar circumstances can change and therefore your will should be reviewed and updated. If you decide to contact us, we can: 1 Advise and guide you in preparing or revising your Spanish will. You can make several wills, but it is only the last

signed will that is valid. 2. Advice on Inheritance Tax and explain the whole proceeding of distribution of the inheritance after death. 3. Assist you at the Notary Office when you sign your Spanish will. Our standard fees for helping you to prepare and sign a Spanish will are 150 Euros for one Will (21 % VAT and notary fees included) and 300 Euros for two Wills (21 % VAT and notary fees included). For further information on making Spanish wills and arrange a free appointment, please do not hesitate to contact us at mail@axarquiasolicitors.com. ANDALUCIA DAY

February 28th

T

he Day of Andalucía (Día de Andalucía), also known as Andalucía Day, marks the anniversary of a referendum held on February 28, 1980. A large majority of voters supported this referendum for Andalucía to become an autonomous community in Spain. Is Day of Andalucía a Public Holiday? Day of Andalucía is a public holiday in Andalusia, where it is a day off for the general population, and schools and most businesses are closed. What Do People Do? Many people spend the day quietly with family or close friends. However, some people organize or attend private parties with traditional music, dancing, food and drink. Some municipalities hold communal meals with traditional foods, drinks and entertainment. Local politicians may present people

18 The Grapevine

with certificates or medals for service to the community. Public Life The Day of Andalucía is a public holiday in the autonomous community of Andalucía on February 28. Public life is generally quiet and many businesses and other organizations are closed. Many stores are closed but some bakers and food stores may be open. Public transport services generally run to a reduced schedule but there may be no services in rural areas. If February 28 falls on a Sunday, regional or local authorities may move the public holiday to a different date. If February 28 falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, many businesses and organizations are also closed on Monday, February 27, or Friday, February 29 or March 1. The Day of Andalucía is not a public holiday in the rest of Spain on February 28.

Background The autonomous community of Andalucía shares international land borders with Portugal and Gibraltar. Within Spain, it borders the autonomous communities of Castile-La Mancha, Extremadura and Murcia. People in Andalucía voted for the region to become an autonomous community of Spain on February 28, 1980. However, the Spanish Parliament only accepted Andalucía as an historic nationality in 2006. Symbols Andalucía's flag is widely displayed on the Day of Andalucía. It consists of three equal horizontal bars. The top and lower bars are dark green and the middle bar is white. Andalucía's coat of arms is at the center of the flag. Andalucía's coat of arms consists of an image of the mythical Greek hero Heracles between two columns. The columns represent the Pillars of Heracles. These are the rocks on either side of the Straits of Gibraltar.

CAFÉ CENTRAL A 101 Years Of History

T

he farewell day to Café Central came last month after 101 years of history linked to the life of the people of Malaga. The mythical bar pulled the shutter closed due Rafael Prado, its owner retiring . Prado explained that he has tried to give a full and faithful service, despite his announced retirement and the consequent closure of the premises. "The only thing I'm going to keep will be the collection of photographs of my father and me" he said. In 1954, Rafael's father created the typical way of ordering coffee in Malaga : nube, sombra, con leche, doble etc. Ignacio Prado, the owner's son, maintains a cafeteria under the name of Central in La Malagueta. "What I take away from this business is the idea of doing things well, of giving good service and that the customer is comfortable at all times," says the son. Nacho has stated that his father has always taught him values before

22 The Grapevine

business and that people are above everything. Centuries-old history The history of Café Central dates back to the early 20s of the last century. Although the origins are not entirely clear, the first references are from the year 1920, when the name of the business appears in the advertising of a tourist guide of the city: Café El Central by Manuel Lucena. According to the historian Fernando Alonso in his book 'Malaga historical shops', in its origins it was a modest café where guitar 'players', singers and other characters related to flamenco art would come. The establishment has been run by the Prado family since 1954, when they acquired it practically abandoned. Prado confesses that the life of the Central is the story of his family. The business was started by his father and uncle after the Civil War and after previous experiences at El Suizo and Café

Munich, businesses that were located in the same square, on one side and on the other of the Central. In fact, the Central name may be due to the fact that it was in the middle of the three. "My father never changed the name of any of the businesses," he explains. Later, around 1968, they bought the annexed premises where the Suizo and Munich were located until completing the commercial basement where it is located today. If the Central is known for something, it is for having created its own way of naming the cafes that have gone around the world and that attracts all the tourists who visit the city. Rafael remembers that his father was tired of remaking coffees because customers always asked him for a little more or less of something That is why he decided to establish the now famous descriptions for coffee that go from solo to nube.

BLUCEE Information on Sierra Nevada

O

ne of the big draws of moving to Málaga for us was that, having left Switzerland, we’d still have easy access to a ski resort whilst enjoying our new found beach life. Living to the east of Málaga city means we are just under two hours to the beautiful ski resort of Sierra Nevada. Situated in Granada province the ski resort is the most southerly in Europe. With the highest elevation at 3,300 metres and over 110km of pistes available to discover there is something for everyone. One of our impressions when we first skied in Sierra Nevada in 2016 was that it was very different to the many other resorts we’d visited. The Spanish have really managed to harness

24 The Grapevine

the beach holiday in the snow vibe! The village and slope restaurants feel like chiringuitos in the snow with an easy laidback vibe. The all day sunshine reminds me of the spring weather we’d experience in March in Switzerland only it’s January. There are nursery slopes for the younger or beginner skiers and plenty of ski schools and instructors to choose from, including the British Ski Centre with native English speakers for those not confident in Spanish yet. For the more confident snowboarder and skier there is the Sulayr Snowpark, which has plenty of jumps from easy to expert level. The resort itself is generally what we’d call intermediate level

although there are off-piste areas too. There are also plenty of beautiful trails for snowshoe hikes and guided hikes are available.. Take off your skis and head for family fun at Mirlo Blanco, based at Pradollano. It has slides, a roller coaster and “magic carpet rides”. On the sierranevada.es website you can find a full calendar of ski and snowboard competitions that will take place during the season. The slope and village restaurants offer a variety of food and we find them quite reasonably priced considering the location. A SPANISH TRIP OUT Out & About With Josie

J

ust before Christmas I went to Jerez de la Frontera arranged by the Town Hall. The journey was comfortable, the scenery green, and after a comfort stop, we were presented with a traditional cake, a small cup of Anis and two bingo cards with pens! As you can imagine it was hilarious because the line prizes were red pants, shown to the whole coach amid guffaws. Before we knew it, we were on the outskirts of Jerez and at our Hostal, and after a cooked buffet lunch, we checked into our rooms and were back on the bus to explore Jerez. Jerez Since 1964 my secret tipple has been Tio Pepe, so I was hoping this was a pilgrimage and indeed was pleased when the bus passed by the Harveys sign, then the Osbourne building, (with several metal bulls in the front), and onto the Gonzales Byass bodega with its large Tio Pepe figure against the skyline, at last!

30 The Grapevine

Getting off the bus we bypassed the entrance, viewed the Cathedral, and then onto five other churches! Jerez seemed to be a clean old town, much larger than I had imagined, with statues of horses, Moorish buildings, 15th C churches and lots of Plazas with water features, all decorated for Christmas. We had nearly an hour to ourselves, so we had a Tio Pepe, feeling like tourists, until after people watching noticed the well-dressed resident drank sherry as well. For years Jerez had been a trading port for wine and today still feels like a prosperous city, without a beggar in sight! Leaving for the evening meal, the driver did a detour by the docks, and we saw the’ Queen Elizabeth’ heading out of port all lit up, and then back to the Hostal for more hot food eaten in a refectory to the accompaniment of noisy merry eaters! We vowed that for the next couple of nights it would be cheese, ham, and wine in our room!

Puerto de Santa María Next morning, we had the half hour bus ride to this city on the Atlantic, which is opposite Cadiz, a once rich trading town with the Americas. It has wide sandy beaches overlooking the Atlantic, pine forests and the third largest bull ring in Spain (saw none of these) as we crossed the bridge over the large river Guadalate leading to the centre of town, past huge merchants’ houses from the 15th and 16th C now empty, but the facades give one an idea of their former grandeur and now some are being restored. It has been a settlement since before the Romans and has a long and rich history with a castle, old city walls, Moorish buildings, a 15th C fever hospital for sailors and naturally, lots of old churches. This is the home of the first man to make a map of America which is displayed in stone on a wall, but the tourist website only concentrates on the beaches, not the history! On to the Casa de los Leones a restored 17th C palace now holiday apartments, with an inside courtyard sporting Lion motifs and its own art

Jerez Early evening, we left to hear the Zambombas, apparently, a tradition on the last Saturday before Christmas. It was packed with revellers joining in the singing, at different venues but

it’s not my scene and too crowded, so we people watched from a bench before the guide took us to see more fountains and statues of horses. First thing before breakfasting our cases were put on the coach, but we had another fun filled morning in Jerez, firstly visiting a Palace from 18th C and an Alcazar on same site, then Claustro Santa Domingo. Outside Santa Domingo, along the main street came a solemn procession with what looked like Dolores accompanied by penitents in sackcloth. It took place whilst our companions were in the church and was quite unexpected. Nowhere on the website can I find out what the ceremony was, and not a baby Jesus in sight! Lunch at the Hostal, then back to Competa by 7.15pm, (without playing bingo), after an enjoyable break in a lovely area of Spain, which I can heartily recommend and wish revisit some day. ANTIVIRAL PILLS Pedro Sánchez Announces The Purchase Of Antiviral Pills From Pfizer And The Regulation Of The Prices Of Antigen Tests

percent the possibility of hospitalization of the most vulnerable patients.” To face this sixth wave of the pandemic, we continue to rely on vaccination and self-protection measures such as the mask.

"The debate we had before and during this Christmas has been, above all, about the supply of these tests; there was an exponential increase in demand but not in supply. This issue has already been resolved; now we will get to control the price of the antigen tests ", he commented this in an interview with Ser.

We must have confidence in the work of the technicians, the ministries, the autonomous governments ... and in a vaccination widely supported by children," said the Chief Executive, who recalled that the objective is that by February 7, 70% of children will have had their first dose and in the week of April 18th, 70% will have completed the schedule.

In addition, it has announced that the Government is going to buy 344,000 oral antivirals against COVID this month manufactured by Pfizer that "reduce by 88

Regarding the possibility of implementing measures to oblige people who have not yet done so to be vaccinated, he replied that it is a debate "relevant to other parts of Europe" but not in Spain, where 90% of the population have had the vaccine. Pfizer has announced that its antiviral drug, marketed under the brand name Paxlovid, reduces hospitalizations and deaths by 89%, according to its own data. The course of treatment consists of 30 pills to be taken over five days. Ten of these pills contain ritonavir, an old antiviral once used against HIV.

YOUNG SPANIARDS’ ABILITY TO LEAVE HOME Coronavirus Means Fewer Than Three Out Of 20 Youths Have Moved Out Of Their Parents’ House.

S

pain has just over 6.8 million people between the ages of 16 and 29, and barely one million of them live outside the family home. This means just 14.9% live in their own independent housing, the lowest figure so far this century. According to the latest Emancipation Observatory study, covering the first half of 2021 and published by the Spanish Youth Council (CJE) on December 16, one would have to go back to 1998 for a worse statistic. The causes are fundamentally economic. The coronavirus crisis may have brought down house prices, but it has also affected the labor market and has had a particularly negative impact on workers in temporary or precarious employment. “Young people are not getting out of the

38 The Grapevine

crisis; we are not recovering,” said the president of the CJE, Elena Ruiz Cebrián. Produced every six months and based on the analysis of microdata from the National Statistics Institute (INE), the study helps understand why it is more difficult for young Spaniards to leave home than for most of their European counterparts. A significant factor is the relationship between salary and housing prices. Given the typical cost of a rental property and the average salary of those under 30, a young person would have to spend 81.9% of their income on rent in order to live alone. The problematic ratio is compounded by income instability. More than half of young people hold a job on a casual basis while those with part-time jobs accounted for

27.8%. Neither of these two situations, according to the study, is a matter of choice. t seems that younger generations no longer have the chance to decide on certain aspects of their lives. “It has become fashionable to talk about sharing an apartment in the same way that it was once said that we should go abroad to learn English,” says Ruiz. “This seems to show a lack of perspective: there are people who go abroad to learn languages and people who share housing for that experience; but most do not do it because they want to, but because it is the only thing they can afford to do.” The CJE, for example, calculates that the average salary would only be enough for each young person to rent a home with a surface area of 29.3 square meters.

FACTS ABOUT ST. VALENTINE’S DAY IN SPAIN Different Ways To Celebrate Around Spain

A

lthough not a traditional Spanish holiday, St. Valentine’s Day in Spain is celebrated, like in most countries, with all kinds of sweet heart-shaped gifts, bouquets of flowers, cards, and romantic dinners at fancy restaurants. Shop windows are decorated with hearts in all shades of red and pink; bars and cafés are getting creative with Valentine-themed offerings; and many events are organized throughout the country. What’s really interesting about St. Valentine’s Day in Spain is that certain regions have their own versions of the holiday, usually celebrated with great fanfare and peculiar traditions. Books and Roses in Catalonia In Barcelona and the whole region of Catalonia, couples rejoice their love on April 23, when the nation celebrates St.

George’s Day or La Diada de Sant Jordi. This public holiday is also known as El Dia de la Rosa (The Day of the Rose) or El Dia del Llibre (The Day of the Book), and the main event is the exchange of gifts, usually roses and books, hence the Catalan saying “A rose for love and a book forever”. As expected, during this time of year, a myriad of stalls selling roses and books are set up all over the region; public squares are brought to life by all sorts of performers; and most of the bookstores and cafés organize readings. This is also the day when Barcelona’s Palau de la Generalitat opens its doors to the public. Valencia’s Day of Saint Dionysius For people from Valencia, the most romantic day of the year is the 9th of October, when they

celebrate both the Day of the Valencian Community as well as the Day of Saint Dionysius (Sant Dionís), locally known as the patron saint of lovers. This is a public holiday marked by many festivities and colorful costume parades held in the main plaza of every town and village throughout the region. A distinctive tradition on the Day of Saint Dionysius is the custom of offering ladies a Mocadora (Mocaorà) as a sign of love and appreciation. This traditional gift consists of a nice package of marzipan figurines handcrafted by local confectioners and then wrapped up in an elegant silk scarf. The Origin of Valentine’s Day in Spain El Dia de San Valentin was first introduced in Spain in 1948 by José ‘Pepín’ Fernández, the founder of Galerías Preciados, who, as any clever businessman,

Snoopy is an affectionate young lad who loves his cuddles and playing with others. His mother was a Podenco but his father was something black and white like a Bodeguero and he has inherited his colouring. Snoopy will be three months old this Februrary and will be chipped, vaccinated and ready for adoption.

olly and Star are 12 week-old pups who were found in the riverbed of the Rio Chillar on Christmas Day by a Swedish woman who was staying in Nerja for the holidays. This Good Samaritan contacted the Costa Animal Society (CAS) straight away However it was impossible to find a foster place for them over Christmas, which can be challenging even in the best of times, and the pups were taken to the local kennels. The pups were actually very clean and in good condition, so they were probably dumped only hours before they were found. In fact, they were well looked after up to that point making it all the more difficult to understand how someone could leave them in the riverbed to fend for themselves at such a tender age. Holly and Star are sweet and playful girls who will be large dogs when they grow up but we think gentle ones. Both pups love food and treats so they will be easily trained and each will make a wonderful addition to any family.

46 The Grapevine

They have been examined by our vet, received worming treatment and vaccinations, and will be chipped with a passport in early February when they will be ready for adoption. Holly is a bit more adventurous than her sister but Star loves her cuddles and both are very affectionate. The pups keep coming and it's not even spring yet. Snoopy was also rescued from the Rio Chillar last month when he was living rough with his mother and another pup amongst a thick thatch of cane in front of a cortijo. His mother and sibling were very wary of people and kept their distance in the canes and even had their pathways in and out of the cortijo fence making it impossible to catch them. Snoopy though has a much more trusting and inquisitive nature. CAS was able to scoop him up from the river road, thereby, saving him from a campo life of exposure to diseases, parasites and growing up with little human contact. Again no foster place was available in mid January and Snoopy was placed into a local kennels.

Buzz is a young Bordie Collie dog who was found on the San Juan de Capistrano urbanisation in Nerja at the end of 2021 after wandering the streets near the tower for several days. Unfortunately, no owner was found despite extensive advertising on social media and in local magazines, thus Buzz is ready for a new forever home. He is an 18 month-old male who has the coat, colouring and size of a smooth Collie with the temperament and good nature to match. Buzz is a sweet boy who loves to please people and he gets along well with other dogs. He would make a wonderful companion for a single person or a family of two or more and he will be easily trained. If you would like to meet Buzz or any of the other animals under the care of CAS, and are looking to adopt or are willing to foster a pet please contact CAS by email at costaanimalsociety@gmail.com or through our Facebook page \casnerja.

Catalunya Catalonia, or Catalunya, is located in northeastern Spain, with Barcelona as its capital. It’s also home to some of the most well-positioned campsites in Spain. You can book in at campsites within just feet of white sandy beaches, with some offering parking and even caravan repairs. Galicia In the northwest region of Spain lies Galicia, an autonomous community along the Atlantic coastline. It’s one of the top seafood regions in Spain and borders both the Cantabrian Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. To take advantage of the most spectacular scenery, most campsites in Galicia are positioned along the coast. You’ll always be within a short distance of large sea coves while benefiting from dramatic backdrops and proximity to standout eateries to sample some of the area’s finest cuisine. Many of the best campsites in Galicia are positioned in wooded and shaded areas with views of the Bay of Biscay. They tend to have bars, restaurants, nearby beaches, and spacious motorhome sites to rent for extended periods. Asturias If your travel party is interested in religious culture and medieval architecture, a trip to Asturias in northwest Spain may be in order. This region is well known for its historical significance while also being a breath-taking area to camp due to its rugged coasts and dramatic mountains.

In Candás, Asturias, you may benefit from direct access to the beach and opportunities to leave your motorhome at the campsite and explore the town on foot. This may be worth your while since, in Asturias, you may only park your motorhome in an area specifically reserved for it and for no longer than 48 hours. Andalusia Ronda Gorge - Andalusia Even though much of Spain has strict rules surrounding wild camping, Andalusia takes a loose approach. You may camp on private land with landowner permission for up to three days, but not within approximately 650 feet of a beach’s high tide mark, near military installations, or in protected areas. In most situations, booking into a campsite is going to be a worthwhile option. For example, on your way through Monachil, you can set up on the edges of the Sierra Nevada National Park. Within a 30-minute drive, you’ll then be able to go horse riding, biking, hiking, or even partake in winter sports.

opportunities are also plentiful, with an abundance of campgrounds mainly positioned along the coast, within short travel distances of popular tourist activities. Wild camping is not permitted in Valencia, but most people won’t mind when they realize just how many standout campgrounds accept motorhomes and tent campers. You can be within walking distance of sandy beaches or pitch a tent under a shady tree in a small village. There are even campgrounds high in the hills, boasting stunning views at elevation while still being a short distance from shops and beaches. Even though camping rules in Valencia tend to be quite strict compared to other parts of Spain, you’ll never be without options. Those needing a break from their motorhome or tent can also take advantage of some of the more unique camping opportunities. There’s something for everyone, from cabins and yurts to barrel houses and rustic cottages.

Stay awhile, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore. APHRODISIAC FOODS What Foods To Use In Your Valentines Menu

A

phrodisiac foods are said to increase your flavor for lust, desire and love. And this list is all you need to get things going this Valentine’s Day: 1. Chocolate we all know chocolate is delicious. But did you know that it’s believed to be an aphrodisiac? It’s been said that certain compounds in cacao can have an aphrodisiac effect. Perhaps that’s why chocolate is such a popular Valentine’s Day gift. Or maybe it’s just a great marketing ploy! Who knows? Either way, give chocolate a chance. 2. Honey Did you know that honey was used during the Middle Ages to boost sexual desire? Yep, and people still believe today that it has the same lust-inducing effect! Be careful, though, when adding honey to your meals and desserts. It’s calorie dense and can contain toxins, so use it in moderation!

Bananas are rich in potassium and vitamin B, both of which are great for boosting energy levels. And as you know, if you’re going to be participating in extracurricular activities this VDay, you’ll need all the energy you can get! Bananas also contain an enzyme called bromelain which, according to some health experts, can trigger testosterone production.

6. Artichokes Artichokes may not sound like the most appetizing food to some people, but they’re actually delicious! Not only are they great to eat, but they’re packed with vitamins that are essential for blood flow. And, as you may have noticed from previous entries in this list, vitamin-rich foods tend to fall on the aphrodisiac scale. Artichokes are one of them!

4. Avocados Avocados are all the rage these days. They’re healthy and make a great spread on toast. They’re also considered an aphrodisiac and were allegedly used by the Aztecs to boost libido. So, what makes avocados great for sex? Vitamin E. It’s said to be great for upping your energy levels.

7. Asparagus Keep your Valentine’s Day meal sexy and healthy with a little asparagus! In addition to its high fiber content (which is great for digestion), it’s a great source of Vitamin E and is believed to do wonders for your libido. Get some tasty asparagus on a grill and you should be good to go!

5. Watermelon Back in 2008, researchers at Texas A&M University found that watermelon could cause Viagralike effects. The fruit is known to relax blood vessels and increase circulation. So, if you’ve got a craving for watermelon this Valentine’s Day, you should probably go for it!

Regardless of food’s ability to get increase your taste for lust on Valentine’s Day, there’s nothing sexier than sharing a good meal with your sweetheart. So, eat to your heart’s content and enjoy .

3. Bananas

Joan's house, paediatric room number 10. A central part of this project is the remodelling of the house where Joan lived her last years, built and paid for by herself. Located next to the Cudeca Hospitalisation Unit in Benalmádena, it will be converted into a space completely adapted to deal with such special situations, familiar and homely, with its own kitchen and a small garden overlooking the sea.

L

ast December 2021, the La Sala Group and the Elena Gaite Foundation donated €10,000 to the Cudeca Foundation to join their crowdfunding campaign "Joan Hunt, one in a million", which aims to raise €1,000,000 to create and manage the Cudeca Paediatric Palliative Care project for 4 years.

This project will include the specialised comprehensive care and compassionate accompaniment of children and adolescents, as well as their families, including not only parents, but also siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles... the whole family. A team of expert professionals: doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, physiotherapists, music therapists, art and play therapists, teachers, and volunteers, would attend both in the homes and at the Cudeca Centre, in room number 10 or at the Day Centre.

Elena Gaite Foundation. The Elena Gaite Foundation has recently been set up to help charitable causes, in particular, to support the cause of the Cudeca Foundation, with the intention of raising funds in Elena's name and maintaining her legacy of unceasing help to others as an inspiration and example to all those around her. Elena, recently deceased and unforgettable to all her colleagues, friends and family, was instrumental in making La Sala what it is today, one of the most important hospitality enclaves on the Costa del Sol. Elena's husband, John has supported the La Sala Golf team throughout 2021 by helping out at every event, and has managed to get incredible prizes for the raffles and charity auctions. All proceeds from La Sala Golf tournament days go to the Elena Gaite Foundation in support of the Cudeca Foundation, DEBRA - Piel de Mariposa and AVOI, as well as to help the family of the firefighter who lost his life in the forest fire that hit the mountains last year, among other important charitable causes. In this first year of solidarity activity by the Elena Gaite Foundation and La Sala Group, they have managed to raise €25,000. Ian Radford, La Sala Group Chairman, said: "It was great to return to the fun golf days of 2021. Seeing so many of our regular golfers enjoying the day makes all the effort worthwhile. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued

support. We continue to raise money for some great local charities; I think we could do more through the prizes on offer for the raffle and auction. This is something we will be focusing on next season, with the aim of raising as much as possible for some great causes. One of our main charities, and I have heard about their new initiative where they are creating a new wing at the Hospice just for children as Joan Hunt, their founder passed away and left her home for this project. The campaign is called "One in a million", in reference to Joan herself. I think it is something we should support, so we will be increasing our efforts in this regard. I'm sure you've all met John Frutos at the events and conducting the raffle. It has obviously been a very hard time for John and his family, but I know that these events to support charities, especially Cudeca in memory of Elena mean a lot to him. Any support that helps us to keep on climbing is very much appreciated." For his part, John Frutos, said movingly: "I want to thank Cudeca for the help they gave Elena and my family during her last days and to say that both the Elena Gaite Foundation and La Sala Group will continue to support this indispensable cause for our community, that of palliative care. I am also very grateful for Ian Radford's support and help during the most difficult times for me”. The CEO and Medical Director of the Cudeca Foundation added emotionally, Marisa Martín: "This generous contribution from La Sala Group is a great joy that will bring a great deal of growth to our project of creating Cudeca's Paediatric Palliative Care Hospice. I would like to warmly thank the solidarity of the Group, but also the kindness and dedication of John Frutos and the exemplary attitude of all the golfers and friends of La Sala. Thank you very much".

Buddha's Hand

Citrus, The Zest of Life Part 2 Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta

F

ollowing on from last month's article on the more common citrus, let's take a look at some rarer ones that you may not yet have in your garden. The article provoked many questions in the garden centre about growing citrus, so I'll also give you some basic but essential information on that too. Buddha's Hand is probably the weirdest-looking fruit in the world and we are lucky enough to be able to grow it. Certainly it will cause comment! Also known as the fingered citron, it is a variety of citron, citrus medica var. sarcodactylis and looks like a lemon with appendages. It contains no pulp, juice or seeds but it is highly fragrant and the peel and rind have multiple uses. Simply break off a finger and grate the sweet, lemony peel. Use it in deserts, drinks, stir-fries, sauces, marmalades and for candied peel. It's a late cropper, usually available during springtime. It needs a warm

68 The Grapevine

temperate climate, similar to oranges and lemons, with plenty of sunshine. In the Far East, it symbolises good luck and is commonly given as a new year gift. So now, coming into springtime, is a good time to plant one in your garden. Kumquats and Limequats are two varieties of mini-citrus fruits. Their great appeal is that they are eaten whole, skin and all! Both grow on small shrub-like trees and the fruits can be candied or pickled and used in sauces and marmalades, as well as eating them fresh from the tree for a sweet-sour snack. Both are excellent plantings for pots and are prolific producers. Kumquats resemble mini oranges with an elongated shape. Their thin peel is sweet, whilst the flesh gives a jolt of tartness in the mouth. There are three main varieties; Nagami has the typical elongated form and is more sour than Marumi which has a milder sweeter flavour but is not so popular commercially. Meiwa kumquats are a hybrid of

Nagami and Marumi and this is the most popular variety in Asia. There are various other hybrids too but they are difficult to find outside of Asia. The kumquat is great for colder areas, hardy down to around -10C. Limequats turn lemon-yellow as they ripen but their light-green flesh tastes like a lime. They are hardier than other limes, but not as cold tolerant as the kumquat. Temperatures below zero would not be liked - it is comfortable between 10C and 35C with short spells at the extremes tolerated! A pot planting on a sheltered and sunny patio is better for this one. Common cultivars are Eustis, Lakeland and Tavares. Limes, citrus latifolia, are recognised by their small green fruits. Most of the world's production of limes is in Mexico, which also has the highest consumption rate. What we commonly call a 'lime' is a Persian lime, also known as Bearss variety; it's the one we now

commonly see in our shops. They are about 6cm in diameter with a rounded tending to oval shape and they are seedless. The flesh is pale greenish-yellow and they are typically harvested when green. However, if left on the tree longer, they will mature to yellow-green and become even juicier. They love a warm, sheltered position and can also be grown in pots. Limes come in a big range of shapes, sizes and colours! There is the striking red rind of the blood lime - rarely seen - to the long tubular fruits of the finger lime which ooze clear caviar-looking spheres of juice. If you want a lime, there's a lot of them! Blood limes are smaller than traditional limes; their red eggshaped fruits are only about 4cm long x 2cm wide. However, unlike other limes and in common with the limequat, you can eat the skin along with the flesh. It was created by crossing a red finger lime with a mandarin hybrid, resulting in these small blood-red sweet limes. Mexican limes are rarely seen here but there are three main protagonists. Mary Ellen, citrus limettioides, or sweet lime is small and rounded with a much blander flavour than other limes. Castello lime is a traditional variety with good flavour and lots of juice. And the thornless Mexican lime is now becoming very popular for obvious reasons! Rangpur lime, citrus x limonia osbeck, or mandarin lime looks more like a mandarin than a lime, with orange colour both inside and out and can be used interchangeably. From Bangladesh. The finger lime, microcitrus australasica, is also known as the caviar lime for its small spherical beads, known as vesicles, which make this fruit so special. Typically the fruit is some 7cm long and green with a very pale-green flesh. There are varieties of blood finger lime too; this hybrid that was created to be especially saltresistant for growing in a specific area of Australia. Relatively new on the market, finger lime trees are prickly but compact with delicate

white scented flowers. Kaffir lime trees are beginning to be more politically correctly known as Makrut lime or citrus hystrix meaning hedgehog in reference to the thorny branches of the tree. Originally from Indonesia, both the bumpy-skinned fruits (for their zest) and the leaves are used. Another one for a warm spot and it will take more humidity than other limes. All citrus need a sheltered position; if you're very exposed, then the lemon will be the toughest. Smaller growers such as kumquat, limequat, lime and mandarin can all be easily grown in pots; oranges and lemons too but in very large containers; avoid grapefruit which are the biggest growers and like to stretch their roots and limbs. Improve the soil before planting with compost or an organic manure and avoid clay or constantly wet areas. A sunny position is essential. All are selffertile, so you'll only need one of each variety - ideal for home gardeners. Citrus are big feeders, especially during springtime when in active growth and during fruit development. They carry their fruits for many months, so need energy to do that. Use organic products - you're going to be eating these fruits. Concentrated organic manures usually need to be applied two or three times a year; if you're using well-rotted manure, it's best to apply more frequently - say 3kg annually for each tree. To help with green growth, you can apply additional nitrogen; phosphorus will help produce flowers and fruit. Citrus will grow in an alkaline soil though their ideal is somewhere between PH 6 and 7.5, in common with most plants. Infrequent deep watering is the way to irrigate - once or twice weekly during summer with much less during winter. Citrus - and especially limes - do not like to stand in water, it can easily cause root or collar rot. About 8 litres per

adult tree per watering is recommended. An application of myccorhizal rooting compound will cut this requirement drastically. If you're growing in pots, make sure that the saucer is not left full for more than a few hours. Just like other fruit trees, give an annual pruning - generally after cropping. Cut out crossing or tangling wood, opening up the centre to allow the sun's rays to reach every branch. Dead or diseased wood can be removed at any time, remembering to disinfect your secateurs between cuts. Remember to wrap your trees in fleece if a cold spell threatens and it's also very useful in windy positions - it's surprising what a difference that thin layer of protection offers. Open up when flowers start forming to allow pollinators to do their job. Healthy, strong trees are the best way to avoid disease and insect attack. The most common problems are citrus leaf miner (curling leaves), scale insect (blobs of white marshmallow) and sooty mould (black powdery coating on the leaves and branches). All of these can be treated with neem oil and a weekly spraying with a preventative dosage of neem oil will help avoid problems. They're such wonderful trees, it's easy to become addicted. If you need still more information, I have copies of my book, Citrus, the Zest of Life, available at Viveros Florena. Packed with all sorts of information about citrus, the price of it is currently reduced to just €10 Viveros Florena, Cómpeta Opening hours, 10,00 until 16.00, closed Sundays and Mondays. NERJA CAVES Virtual Reality is going to make the Nerja Caves more accessible, bringing it closer to a public that currently cannot visit it due to the 458 steps of its circular route. In addition, it will allow the display of its non-visitable galleries and its cave art. Virtual Reality makes it possible to bring this Asset of Cultural Interest closer to everyone, fully showing the treasures it keeps inside. Thus, all its galleries and that priceless cave art will be technologically accessible. Every corner of the cavity can be seen and known thanks to glasses that incorporate this technological innovation and that allow you to live the experience of being in a certain place through the surrounding image.

CANILLAS DE ACEITUNO Canillas de Aceituno has just presented within the framework of Fitur the project www.gastronomiadecanillas.es, a portal with mainly gastronomic content that also includes tourist information about the town. With

this initiative, the City Council aims to position the municipality as an inland destination where you can enjoy unique gastronomic products and nature. The implementation of this project is accompanied by a series of tourist promotion actions on the Internet and at the different fairs in which the municipality participates. In this way, the City Council intends to position the local gastronomy, especially the goat, which is the main gastronomic product of the town, and the Day of the Black Pudding, an event that is celebrated on the last Sunday of April. As explained by the mayor , Vicente Campos, “Developing this digital project will be part of our tourism strategy for 2022..

The president framed the growth of five - star hotels in the city in this idea and cited names such as Soho Boutique , Castillo de Santa Catalina , Cortijo de la Reina , La Montana or the Torre del Puerto itself , of which he was convinced that will eventually come out. For Moreno, these are investments that "attract a demanding tourism, not only with the establishment, but with cleanliness, the quality of public transport, with security services, with health." "It is tourism that will leave more money in the city and will drive more growth," he said.
