have had an infection and must wait before getting their first dose.n Spain, there are still 7.7 million people aged over 12 who are yet to be vaccinated against Covid-19. The majority are young people who are currently the focus of the campaign, and will be fully inoculated over the coming weeks. But there is also a small section of people among those who were due to be given their shots months ago who are yet to receive a single dose: 7.4% of the 50-59 age group, and 15.4% of those aged 40 to 49.

NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

A

t least 800 people were evacuated in Spain as forest fires blazed last month in two regions, with extremely dry conditions worsening the risk of more wildfires during the hottest weekend of the year so far. Two planes, a helicopter and almost 200 firefighers were dispatched to the province of Ávila in central Spain to tackle two separate fires there, Spain’s Military Emergencies Unit said in a tweet. Relative humidity fell as low as 8% in Ávila, according to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, leading to tinderbox conditions. Images released by firefighters in the region showed planes dumping water onto blazing agricultural buildings, while the Spanish Red Cross tweeted pictures of first responders bringing elderly residents to safety. The Castile and León regional government evacuated citizens from several villages. The private Europe Press agency reported that more than 500 people were taken to a sports facility to shelter from the blaze as it decimated 5,000 hectares (12,400 acres) of forest. Jesús Martín, the mayor of Solosancho, one of the villages affected, told

Europa Press: “Our mountains have been burned. It’s a horrible sensation. Everything is black." Meanwhile last month in Spain’s eastern Valencia region, an electrical storm triggered a fire that forced the evacuation of Azuébar, a village of 300 people, according to the local government in Castellón. The military emergency unit sent two helicopters and a plane to tackle the blaze. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez tweeted: “Solidarity to the evacuated residents, I can imagine their pain and worry,” and thanked the emergency services tackling the fires. Last month Spain set a new provisional heat record of 47.2 degrees Celsius (116.96 Fahrenheit) at Montoro, Cordoba, as much of Southern Europe sweltered under a relentless summer sun. If confirmed, that would exceed the country’s previous record of 46.9 degrees Celsius (116.42 F), set nearby in July 2017.

rom 14 August until November the streets of Malaga will be filled with music as the 'Feel Malaga' festival swings into action, featuring no less than 70 shows on 20 stages around the city, and almost 1,000 musicians. On Tuesday, 10 August, the Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, unveiled the long list of acts – both local and national names - that will take part, with most of the events free to attend. In all cases, the coronavirus control measures established by the health authorities will be followed. The festival will kicked off on 14 August at the Eduardo Ocón venue, with six copla and flamenco shows. The Municipal Auditorium will, from 15 August, offer a cast of national artists with Diana Navarro, Aurora Guirado, Morta, Danza Invisible, Efecto Mariposa, Señor Mirinda and Manolo Sarriá from Malaga. They are joined by Rosario, Café Quijano, Miguel Ríos and David de María. Different stages in the 11 districts of the city will have copla and flamenco shows, which will begin in September and last until November. The folklore associations of Malaga, the verdiales, will take their place in the 'Feel Malaga' festival at Hacienda Quintana, where every Friday and Saturday in September and October, there will be performances.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Residency Applications For British Citizens

T

he Immigration Office is still accepting applications for British citizens who wish to obtain residency in Spain if they can prove that they were living in Spain for over 6 months during 2020 and up to the present day.

This is in addition to the requirements of the 2-stage application system previously established by the government to enable you to apply before Brexit, (e.g., proof of Spanish health Cover and adequate means to show that you do not have to rely on the Spanish Government). The Immigration Office consider the following documents as adequate proof of residency: -Bank/Credit Card statements showing expenditure in Spain throughout 2020 and 2021, for example: supermarkets, bars, restaurants, parking. - Proof of memberships such as golf clubs, tennis clubs etc. - Utility bills (Showing

14 The Grapevine

consumption) - Mobile/internet/telephone bills - Invoices or receipts from Spanish companies - Doctors/hospital appointments in Spain - Resident Tax Declarations *NOTE All documents must be in Spanish, show the date, your name, and where possible your Spanish address. You would need to provide as many of the above documents as possible to ensure that your application is accepted. To date we have not been informed as to how long this concession will be available, so speedy action is advisable. We can assist you with this process, guiding you through each step, completing the necessary forms, arranging appointments etc. Our fee for this service is 200€ per person or 300€ per couple. (Fees include VAT).

GREEN CARD/CERTIFICATE HOLDERS Also, something worth considering, although now, it is not obligatory to change green residency cards/certificates for new TIE cards, it is advisable, as it can facilitate crossing borders because the new cards are biometric. For example, many people are experiencing difficulties when crossing the border between Spain and Gibraltar, some banks are now requesting the TIE card too, and certain institutions also ask for the new card. Eventually it will be necessary to exchange your green residency document for a TIE card, although as yet no date has been set for this. If you would like us to assist you with the process, our fees are 150€ per person or 250€ per couple. (Fees include VAT). Axarquia Solicitors See Advert Opposite

NATURAL WONDERS OF THE EAST OF MÁLAGA An Article By BluCee

A

fter the hustle and bustle of the tourist season, September brings one of our favourite times of year to enjoy our fabulous coastline and all the natural wonders the area has to offer. We’d like to lead you through some of our favourite places, and hopefully there’ll be some surprises. Starting in Maro, just to the east of Nerja, a natural park meaning no fishing is allowed, this is a paradise for snorkelers with its clear water and abundant marine life in a coral reef. You might see sun fish (pez luna in Spanish), dolphins and sting rays (keep your respectful distance). This summer giant jellyfish have

24 The Grapevine

been frequently spotted, Rhizostoma luteum, which can grow up to 40kg in size. Their sting may slightly irritate your skin but they’re not dangerous and should be left to go on their way. They form an important part of our marine eco system and are a main food group for the sun fish previously mentioned as well as turtles (sadly not seen in our waters for many years but recently coming back further west along the coast in Fuengirola). For those with good mobility and feeling adventurous we’d recommend a walk down to the hidden cove of Cala Barranco. Accessed via a trail through bamboo groves, it’s well worth the effort if you’re able.

east side of Torrox is an underwater wreck known as the “Barco de Arroz”. Whether it was actually carrying rice or not is slightly lost in legend, but it was bringing food to the Republicans during the Spanish civil war in January 1937. The boat’s actual name was “El Delfin” and she was first hit by German bombers from above and then finished off the following day by an Italian submarine. As the boat is sunk only about 400m off the coast and has a depth of just over 5m she can easily be accessed by kayak/paddle board and viewed by snorkelers. The wreck has been taken over by marine life such as octopus and starfish and is a wonderful experience even for young (strong) swimmers.

Also for the adventurous and further along the coast just to the

spectacular to last. You’re probably familiar with the wonderful ancient caves in Nerja and Rincon de la Victoria, but there are caves said to be even more incredible in La Araña which is situated between Málaga city and Rincon. The caves have recently been confirmed to be larger than those of Nerja and one of the caverns even leads to the beach - I was given this information as hot off the press by the president of the Club Montaña Rincon, Jose Carlos Cañas who has also kindly allowed us to use CMR’s photos. The caves have been named Cueva de la Maravilla Blanca (the caves of the white wonder) due to their sparkling brightness. It is made up of different rooms and has its own “cathedral”. Sparkling stalactites

and stalagmites abound. The caves have been known about since at least the 1980s, but how deep they go and their incredible beauty has only recently been discovered. They are sadly under threat from explosions from the cement factory above and experts and locals are rallying to save this natural wonder for us and future generations to enjoy. The summer may be coming to an end, but days of adventure are just starting! BASKETBALL IN SPAIN Probably The Second Most Popular Sport In Spain

B

asketball in Spain is very popular sport with a league (ACB) that is considered one of the best outside of the United States. In fact, many American players (most either towards the end of their career or players that weren't quite able to make the cut in the NBA) find themselves playing in such cities like Vitoria, Malaga or León. With all of this popularity and some of the brightest NBA stars coming from Spain, let's take a moment to take a look at some of the lesser known aspects that has come to be a part of the history of Spanish basketball. The Priest Made Me Do It John Naismith invented basketball in 1881 but this game didn't reach Spanish shores until 1921. In that year, a 35 year old priest had just returned to Barcelona from Cuba. In Cuba, this priest, Eusenio Millán, witnessed people playing the

30 The Grapevine

relatively new sport and thought it would be an ideal sport to play in Spain where the winters can be very cold—something he knew all too well coming from the province of Soria. As a man of the cloth and also an educator he introduced this game into the school he taught at, the Escuelas Pías de San Antón, in Barcelona. In 1922 he founded the basketball team Layetano and the growth of teams across Spain was exponential. 10 years later, the first Catalonia vs. Madrid contests were held and even then were played with the same energy and regional pride that is seen to this day. ÑBA in America Considering that basketball has been a popular sport for almost hundred years in Spain, Spanish athletes haven’t really had any presence in the NBA until (relatively speaking) recently. The first international player to play in the NBA was Hank Biasatti who played first for the Toronto

Huskies and later the Boston Celtics. Even though Biasotti was born in Italy he was a Canadian national and, while technically he is the NBA's first international player, it seems a bit of reach to consider him as such since the some consider Canada the 51st state Spain's first player to participate in the NBA was Fernando Martín in 1986. Fernando is considered one of the greatest basketball players Spain has ever produced. Unfortunately his life was cut short in an auto accident in 1989 when he was only 29. His NBA career with the Portland Trail Blazers lasted only 24 games due to injury and he returned to play in the ACB until his death. In 2007, Fernando Martín was posthumously inducted into the FIBA Basketbal Hall of Fame Gil Grissom? Many people don't know that actor Gill Grissom William Petersen was a college football player before he was a Secret

To advertise call 637 028 873

Service agent or the head of the Las Vegas CSI crime lab. Petersen was born in Evanston, Illinoise and later moved to Boise, Idaho. Going to Idaho State on a football scholarship, Petersen quickly found his passion for theater and acting. Interestingly enough, Petersen and group of fellow actors (along with his wife) went to Spanish Basque country to continue learning and working with one of their acting teachers. While in the Mondragon area in mountains between Bilbao and San Sebastian, he quickly learned the Basque language and become very much a part of the local scene. He was so involved with his neighbours that he responded to a call for players by local third division basketball team, Goierri Saskibaloia. Unfortunately for Petersen, but good for all of us fans, he wasn't able to sign on with the team officially since the rules at the time prohibited the signing of foreign players. We're not sure how his career would have gone

To advertise call 637 028 873

anyway since the director of the team has said "he wasn't bad, but he wasn't anything great either. He would shoot a lot and couldn't get one in for the life of him". A Kid's Game The youngest player to ever play in the NBA has been Andrew Bynum who began playing when he was 18 years and 6 days old. As if that wasn't young enough, Ricky Rubio of the Minnesota Timberwolves began playing professionally when he was only 14 years old, making his professional debut on October 15, 2005. And don't think he played with a 3rd division Spanish league team. Ricky was playing with the ACB first division powerhouse DKV Joventut Badalona. In his first year Joventut won the EuroChallenge Cup, a pan European championship, and everyone saw what a 15 year old from the small coastal town of El Masnou could do. Not only did Ricky catch the eye of Europeans, but American

NBA scouts were quickly behind him encouraging him to sign with one of their teams. Considering himself too young to participate in the NBA, Ricky waited until 2011 to make the move across the Atlantic. Considered by most to be the best European guard ever to play in the NBA, he is known for his consistent and fundamentally sound game. Even though soccer is the king of all sports in Spain, basketball is the second most organized sport played in Spain. This popularity has grown in the last few years as Spain has become a global power winning the World Cup once, gold in the last European Championship and silver in the most recent Olympics. Knowing a little bit more about basketball in Spain will hopefully give you a little more insight and appreciation as to how this country, the size of California, has been able to capture the imagination of millions with their style and energy.

Zambomba

AFTER THE SUMMER MONTHS Josephine Drew Out and About

I

wondered what to write about now that September is here. Then I was introduced to a couple who have purchased a home in the village and were under the impression that there was a lull in ‘fun’ until Christmas. Not so! Competa and other villages are just as lively in the Winter months, but in different ways.

tending the smallholdings or fincas). After the sun and fun holiday makers go, we get the intrepid walking groups and art groups, the walkers because its cooler to yomp, and the art groups because of the light. The walkers don’t come into the village much in the evening, they are usually worn out! So what happens?

In the Summertime there is a different atmosphere, holiday makers and folks with holiday homes join in with the Feria and ‘Noche del Vino’, spending money on the Plaza and in the shops, which is good for the economy, and visitors may think that nothing happens when they go home! But a different vibe comes, admittedly It is quieter but never dull, it reverts to a working village again. On the Plaza families eat meals at weekends, celebrating birthdays etc, or just because they can all get together again. (The Summer weekends are mainly spent in the Campo

On September 4th, this year, is ‘Noche del Lumbres’, bonfire night, held in Plaza Carmen a fiesta to celebrate the ending of the grape harvest. A bonfire is built by the side of Bar Chico, and the village choir, which is mainly older folks, sit in a semi-circle and perform old traditional songs, accompanied by the Zambomba (I will explain later), little finger cymbals and castanets. There are only so many notes to get from these instruments and frankly, to my untrained ears each song sounds the same, but then so do English folk songs sung by serious people in woolly jumpers! The mayor and the councillors

distribute Anis, soft drinks, crisps, and nuts, to anyone who is sitting in the chairs in front of the stage, (not in the bars) and the Anis is from knobbly bottles, because they also become musical instruments when rubbed up and down with a bunch of keys! There is a stage where the Fandango is performed, maybe a singer or even a choir, and music for dancing, and everyone dances! Bar David and Bar Chico set up outside bars and tables which fill up later in the evening and the music goes on until quite late. I have never had the stamina to see it through until the end, but having said that, I love it. What is a Zambomba I hear you cry? Firstly, it’s not confined to Andalucia, South America have them too, the instrument was brought over by the African slaves in the 15th Century and adopted by the Iberians. There is a statue to the instrument in a street above Calle San Antonio, if you go up the black road, (Calle

Laberinto), turn first left by the flats and walk up, it is roughly behind Rincon Flores. The dictionary describes it as a percussion instrument of cultural interests. The ones I have seen are made from a large clay pot in the shape of a Moroccan oil pitcher, but some are fashioned out of small wooden barrels or any suitable hollow cylinder. There is a hole in the bottom and a tight cover of thin leather over the top and a small hole in the middle for a reed, or thin piece of wood which protrudes, and this is what makes the vibration when dampened and moved vigorously up and down while holding it close to the body. The noise is akin to honking, or ‘boom boom’ depending on the materials used. It must be seen to appreciate it! Normally there are only one or two in action on the Plaza, and whilst one hand is going up and down the other hand keeps spraying water to keep it damp! It always looks like hard work and the ladies who play these are very serious about it. A bit of local interest for you, nothing to do with the Zambomba. Just before ‘Noche del Vino’ and onwards ex Competenians from Barcelona come to see their families, because many years ago, with not much work for the younger men in the villages, Barcelona beckoned with its rebuilding schemes, and many left behind the family and the smallholdings. Once a year they come back to help with the grapes or anything else, pre Covid. Each year I waited for ‘Mrs Barcelona’, (my neighbour) to come with her husband who, when he was working as a clerk, he would only stay a couple of weeks, but when he retired, they spent at least 2 to 3 months in their small village house, sometimes bringing her son and then twin grandchildren, flying in

from Barcalona. She looked like ‘Mrs Bouquet’ with her pearls, pussycat bow blouses and neat hair, and in her house, there were always visitors to welcome her back, and if you peeked into her door, they would be round a table catching up on gossip with a huge plastic bottle of homemade Competa wine on the centre of her lace covered table. Going back a few years everyone seemed to brew homemade wine in their cellars and on the day of ‘Noche’ folks would sit in the doorway of their houses selling plastic coke or water bottles of brew for a few cents, then they were banned unless they had a licence, (EU directive, or just the town trying to be more hygienic)? When my Spanish was better, (age has deteriorated my memory for small silly words), I asked her if she spoke Catalan, ‘no’, she said, it’s people from here that live near me! She observed all the old traditions, and when her Father was ill, just before Feria, she came to nurse him, (he lived in the tiny house next door), and when he died, she donned black clothing, did not attend any fiestas that year, or have anyone into her house except for the wake and that year she stayed on for most of the Winter. On another occasion in August, I found youngish people outside my house pointing, and I asked if they wanted to come in, which they did. They were from Barcelona and had a relative from America with them and were showing her where the family had lived in the 1960s. They showed me where an old staircase had been, and how this and that had changed, it was lovely for them and for me. This ramble brings me to October and another festival.

the church, (not a large parade more like just standing around in their best uniforms) they have a fiesta at the barracks and a chosen few are invited, the music reverberates all over the village, but the one everyone looks forward to is on the 31st, ‘Noche de las Castanas’, roast chestnut night, at the Plazaletto a small plaza between the grape treading plaza and the main plaza! Of course, its Halloween which is celebrated, but not in the nasty fashion, ‘yummy mummies’ and small children go round dressed alike and make a real effort with costumes and makeup, each little one with a plastic lantern to collect sweets, (I go out with a pocket full of bon bons). The older ones dress up too, but are not intimidating, and it all culminates at the Plazaletto. There is music, dancing, plenty of seats for us oldies and Extranjeros, who are always welcomed. The Competenians seem to have a build in elegance when dancing, and no matter how limpy legged, Carmen, or Dolores are, when the music starts the years roll away and I, for one, feel like a carthorse next to them, until I have enough free Anis. Roast chestnuts are distributed by council workers from a makeshift bar and a very basic chestnut roasting device, (looks dangerous). Another very traditional evening which marks the start of the chestnut season, and you can visit the hot chestnut vendors in Torre, by the church and one by the bus station, and in Malaga, one by El Cortes Ingles and others in the centre, until Christmas! The next day is a bank holiday. More about that in the October edition.

On 2nd October this year, we have ‘Dia de la Policia’, day of the police, after a parade outside

SPANISH HEALTH CARE SYSTEM Public And Private Healthcare Explained

A

ccording to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, total health spending accounted for 9.4% of GDP in Spain in 2011, slightly above the OECD average of 9.3%. The Spanish health care system is ranked as the 7th best healthcare in the world, as indicated in the year 2000 in a report by the World Health Organization. Spain has a high quality healthcare system, guaranteeing universal coverage for all residents. Healthcare in Spain consists of both private and public healthcare, with some hospitals (hospitales) and healthcare centres (centros de salud) offering both private (privado) and state healthcare services (asistencia sanitaria pública). Around 90% of Spaniards use the public healthcare system, which is called the National Health System. However, it is very decentralized with service delivery organized at regional level. The system is overseen by the Spanish Ministry of Health,

52 The Grapevine

which develops policy and oversees the national health budget State healthcare is free of charge to anyone living and working in Spain. However, on some of the Spanish islands you may have to travel to find a state healthcare provider. As the Spanish healthcare system is decentralized, you will need to check the conditions in your own area for using healthcare services. As an expat, you can get free state healthcare if you are: ža resident in Spain and work in

employment or self-employment and pay social security contributions; žliving in Spain and receiving certain state benefits; ža resident in Spain and recently divorced or separated from a partner registered with social security; ža child resident in Spain; ža pregnant woman who is a resident in Spain; žunder 26 and studying in Spain; ža state pensioner;

žstaying temporarily in Spain and have an EHIC card. ž

Health insurance in Spain is covered by Spanish social security payments, which are made by all employees and selfemployed workers. Spouses and children of workers also receive coverage. Certain other groups such as pensioners and those receiving benefits can also register for healthcare if they are residents. They can do this even if they haven’t paid into the health insurance scheme. There is also a discount state contribution scheme for low earners and those out of work called the convenio especial. Those not covered by state insurance or the EHIC card will need to take out private medical insurance. See our guide to health insurance in Spain for more information. How to register for Spain’s public healthcare First of all, you must register with Spanish social security (Dirección General de la Tesorería General

de la Seguridad Social or TGSS), which has offices throughout Spain, to get a social security number. To register for social security, you will need to provide: ža valid passport or ID card. žyour residency certificate. žproof that you have registered

your address at your local town hall. ž

Once you have registered with the TGSS you will be given a Spanish social security number and a certificate stating that you are entitled to medical help. You can then register for medical treatment and apply for a health card (tarjeta sanitaria individual or TSI). You will receive this in the post, or need to pick it up personally. Private healthcare in Spain Private healthcare provision in Spain runs alongside the public

system, with some providers offering both public and private provision. Anyone not eligible for state healthcare will need to take out private health insurance or pay the full amount for any medical costs. Many people also choose to cover themselves for private treatment to give them access to wider and quicker treatment. Around 19% of the Spanish population have some form of private healthcare coverage. Private insurance is also popular among expats. Private health insurance in Spain usually costs between €50-200 a month, depending on the coverage plan Dental Care The Spanish healthcare system does not cover dental care in Spain, unless you are aged under

15 or require emergency treatment. You will need to pay for dental treatment unless you have private health insurance. Dentists in Spain will typically require payment upfront. In an emergency you can go straight to a hospital A&E or ER (Urgencias). If you want to get any other type of hospital treatment, you will need a referral from a doctor. There are public and private hospitals in Spain. Only the public hospitals provide free treatment. Some hospitals offer both private (privado) and state healthcare services (asistencia sanitaria pública), so make sure the staff knows which service you want. When you go to a Spanish hospital you will need to show your social security card or proof of private insurance.

Swiffer

Swiffer is a lovely little Lhasa Apso chap who spent all of his time with his owner and now cannot understand the sudden change in his circumstances. He is an older male who weighs about nine kilos and is in good health and has been castrated. Swiffer is happy to be a solo companion but he does get along well with other dogs and is fine with cats. Hopefully, there is a kind person out there who will give Swiffer the chance to spend his remaining years in a loving home.

CAS NEWS

The Costa Animal Society needs you! The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is seeking animal-loving, energetic, social media savvy persons to come on board. If you're a compassionate person who respects the lives of unfortunate animals who live a treacherous life in the wild, hop aboard. There is an occasional heartache, but the rewards in homing animals and receiving videos of these rescue dogs and cats romping about in their forever homes is something to behold. We are a small, voluntary charity organisation, that has been successfully rehoming and assisting abandoned animals in the Nerja, Frigiliana and Maro for over 30 years. We are presently looking for enthusiastic people to join our committee, continuing the work started by the sitting committee, some of whom have recently stepped down after many, many (some, decades) of years of service. Most importantly, the official posts of President and Secretary need to be filled. For more information, please contact acting President Mae Delaney on 653 557 237. (It should be noted that these are voluntary, unpaid

positions.) If interested, there will be a long-standing cadre of volunteers to provide all the necessary details and assist you along the way. We look forward to hearing from you soon. Mr. Swiffer Swiffer's tale is a sad one that hopefully will have a happy ending. His owner was a retired Dutch national who had lived in Spain for many years but unfortunately became very sick towards the end of July. Swiffer was boarded in private kennels while his owner was admitted to hospital and as the days turned into weeks the Dutch man finally succumbed to his illness in mid August. Regrettably, there were no arrangements made for Swiffer in the event of his owner's death so a volunteer from the Costa Animal Society (CAS) contacted the family in the Netherlands. Even though the brother had no financial obligation to do so, he paid for the kennel fees and for the dog's vaccinations to be updated. However, he could not take him back to Holland because his cats would never accept a canine in their home, making Swiffer an

If you would like to meet one of the animals under the care of the Costa Animal Society (CAS), and are looking to adopt or are willing to foster a pet please contact Kurt and Laura at 95 252 1426 or view the CAS website or Facebook page. Happy Tales Ramon was highlighted in July after being found in the campo near San Juan de Capistrano back in June. He did not have a chip and the Costa Animal Society (CAS) shared his story on social media as a found dog for two weeks but no owner came forward. Shortly thereafter Ramon was advertised for adoption and chosen by a wonderful, welcoming family in the Netherlands. He travelled to his forever home at the end of July where he has settled nicely into his new life; though, we assume, he is struggling to learn the Dutch language, a challenge for any dog, or human for that matter. For more information you can contact CAS on 653 557 237, visit the shop, or see us online at www.casnerja.webs.com or on our Facebook page \casnerja. BACK TO NATIVES Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta

T

he Axarquía is suffering from severe water shortage. At 10 August, the Viñuela reservoir registered its lowest levels ever – only 26% of capacity. El Mundo newspaper recently headlined with “the Málaga avocado is bringing the Axarquía to the brink of desertification” When I first came here, avocados were virtually unheard of. Then, the construction of the Viñuela reservoir was started in 1986, and, in 1989, the Guaro Plan was implemented. This green dream was to transform the Axarquía, with its privileged climate, into a sub-tropical oasis with plantings of fruit trees that would benefit the whole of Spain and the national economy. It was reckoned that the area could support 8,900 hectares of irrigated trees. According to MAPA, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, there are now somewhere between 7,000 and 12,000 hectares planted with avocados in the area and this takes no account of mango

plantations (also on the increase) or other sub-tropicals. According to Ecologists in Action the area planted with avocados is 12,989 hectares. Either way, the recommendations have been largely exceeded. Official drought was declared in June this year, which guarantees a supply of only 50% of normal usage during this year and 25% during next, unless rainfall is exceedingly high this winter to compensate. To add to the problem, some growers take from illegal wells and their consumption does not show in the figures. Not only crops will be lost but, possibly, trees too. Simply put, we have outstripped supply – there just is no water! Rainfall cannot match demand, rivers are dry, ground is contaminated with over-use of chemical fertilisers and herbicides leading to erosion and climate change is only aggravating the problem.

We've seen it coming for several years but, whilst avocados continue to fetch good money, many growers continue to plant and gamble – hoping and expecting that the authorities will step in and bring water from other sources. Just a few are backing away from the monoculture of thirsty avocados and are planting other mixed crops. Avoiding the use of chemicals and allowing a carpet of wild plants under trees helps wildlife havens to develop and encourages organic matter in the soil, thus improving water retention. A green carpet under trees encourages insect life. It's a new form of trail blazing, away from the green dream of a tropical paradise to a more sensible and sustainable usage of the land. These hillsides have traditionally been planted with olives, almonds and vines – all dry crops – for a reason! But we can´t blame avocado growers for it all - tourism and foreign settlement have also hugely
