It’s that time of the year again when we look back and reflect on the events of the past 12 months. On Pages 32 & 33 Josephine Drew reflects on 2021 in the village of Competa. After reflection we attempt to make some resolutions for the year to come. In my opinion give yourself permission and equip yourself to have the resolve to tune out the clutter and not sweat the small stuff. I read this somewhere and rather liked it, “Our life is like a jar. If we fill it with sand, there’s no room to place rocks in it. But, if we put the larger rocks (more important things of life) in the jar first, then we can add sand (less significant items) later.” I also heard a quote the other day about no matter how busy you may be, take the time to be present in the moment and share your presence with those you are with. Find the time to put the phone down, make eye contact, and slow down to live in the moment. I think these things are really important to consider especially within our current environment of uncertainty still. What is certain is that The Grapevine Magazine comes out every month with relevant interesting articles about the area along with providing you with all the useful numbers you need, whether it is to book a restaurant or find a builder. I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and here is to another 12 editions of The Grapevine Magazine in 2022.

will is one of the most common legal needs, but less than 25% of Europeans have one We are now finishing the year and it could be a good moment to think about making a Spanish will or update the existing one. As you may know, a will is not exclusively about making sure that the right people will inherit without disagreement or problems. It is a formal declaration of intention made by a person in his life-time of his wishes concerning the disposal of his property after his death. We understand the need to preserve and protect your assets and those of your family. If you have purchased or already have a property in Spain, we strongly recommend you making a Spanish will in order to facilitate the distribution of your Spanish assets. We have arranged many wills in Spain for foreigner people just like you and we believe that it is a

satisfying part of life's planning and not something which should simply be left to chance. It is a good idea to talk to your family about it so they understand your issues and know what you want. It may help those around you to understand your wishes in distressing circumstances. In Spain, the signing of wills must be made by the testator in the presence of a Public Notary who will keep in his file the original document until the day of death, and will register it in the Spanish Central Registry of wills which is situated in Madrid. If you have already made a will in Spain, please note that your financial and familiar circumstances can change and therefore your will should be reviewed and updated. VALENCIAN PUCHERO The Classic Winter Spanish Stew Explained

hen it comes to healthy Spanish comfort food, puchero is about as good as it gets. Puchero is a type of Spanish stew that varies from region to region and, of course, from house to house.

W

Community, puchero can vary from house to house, but you can buy pre-prepared trays of meats and vegetables at most supermarkets marked that they are meant for puchero, which gives you a fairly good idea of what most people use.

It is basically a type of “cocido,” which is a stew made from various meats, bones, and vegetables which may also include legumes and potatoes. Where in some regions the focus is on garbanzos and sausages, here in the Valencian community more focus is placed on the variety of meats and vegetables.

It is meant to be a simple yet complete meal that brings the entire family together.

The basic puchero usually uses beef bones (with a bit of meat still attached) mixed with some pork bones, a piece of beef for stewing, a bit of chicken or “hen” meat or both. It is said that hens, after they have finished laying eggs, have a much less tender meat which is perfect for giving flavour to stews like puchero. They also include a square of “tocino” also known as pork fatback, and usually add in a “pilota” or two (or three). The pilota is basically a big, oval meatball, the size of an ostrich egg, made with ground pork; it is cooked along with all of the other meat and vegetables. Here you can buy them premade and ready to cook in your puchero, but you can also easily make your own just as you would any other type of meatballs. ISome people add in some sausages such as blood sausage, but I don’t.

It’s hard to formulate a puchero recipe because it does vary so much. Even in the Valencian

As for the vegetables, puchero usually uses a mix of green vegetables and root veggies like

A basic puchero consists of broth obtained from a variety of meats and vegetables which is usually served first either alone or with rice or fine pasta noodles as a soup. The broth is followed by a large platter with all of the meat and vegetables which is placed in the center of the table and from which everybody can serve themselves.

parsnips, turnips, rutabagas, and carrots. They add in some celery and leeks for flavouring the broth, and some “cardos” or “pencas” which are the tough leaf stalks of the artichoke thistle plant; those are my favourite greens for eating along with the beef. Usually potatoes and boniato are added in, along with some garbanzos, If you can’t find boniato, you can use any type of sweet potato instead! Puchero because is a hearty, well balanced and nourishing meal. Despite the fact that the idea of “low fat” has taken force here in Spain, most people aren’t afraid of the fat from the tocino (pork fatback) and they mash it into the potatoes or boniato the way many Americans mash in some butter. Puchero is a great meal for holiday get togethers, which makes it perfect for Christmas dinner. It can be eaten on Christmas day accompanied by the leftovers from Christmas Eve. Another interesting thing to note is that most people make more broth than they will need and save it for making “arroz al horno” afterwards. Those who throw garbanzos into the mix also can save some of those for their rice the next day.

RINCON DE LA VICTORIA BluCee Reports On This Beautiful Coastal Town Near Malaga

W

fiestas and organised public events to a great selection of sport teams, arts and more.

This month we’d like to take you to Rincón de la Victoria which is a town as well as a municipality including the villages of La Cala del Moral, Torre de Benagalbon and Benagalbon. Favoured by people from Málaga and Madrid as a holiday and weekend destination, it keeps a very Spanish population which is becoming increasingly popular with international professionals. The area has excellent public and private schooling options.

Rincon de la Victoria is a sports lover’s paradise. There are great hiking and biking options along the coast and up into the hills. The region has produced some top athletes with the open swimmer Christian Jongeneel living and training here. Rubén Ruzafa Cueto is a professional triathlete, cyclo-cross and mountain bike cyclist from Rincón de la Victoria. Both have local sports centres named after them. The sports centre in Torre de Benagalbon is named after Rubén and the recently opened BeOne swimming pool and gym in Rincón de la Victoria named after Christian. Some inspiration for budding athletes! There are a number of triathlon clubs for children in the area, a number of rowing clubs, the young explorers club (Jovenes Exploradores), a great skate park and much more. With approximately 320 days of sunshine, you’ll always have plenty of time for the outdoor life!

hen people think of Málaga, the historic city and the resorts to the west are probably what springs to mind. But there is a lot to discover to the east of the city, with kilometres of coastline, national parks and traditional Andalusian white villages.

A visit to the Cuevas del Tesoro should be on your list of things to do (unique to Europe as one of only three marine caves in the world). We are also hoping that the excitedly awaited museum of Roman discoveries in the municipality, including a small Roman baths, will be opening soon. Perched on a hill above the sea is Benagalbon, with its pretty winding streets and great selection of restaurants shouldn’t be missed either. It’s a short drive from the main town or you can walk up the riverbed from Torre de Benagalbon and reward yourself with lunch at the end. Michelle and Henny both live in the area and we are always happy to help show people around or offer advice. We are also actively looking for more property to sell in response to many enquiries about Rincon - contact us at info@blucee.com See advert opposite

CUDECA FOUNDATION HOSPICE Josephine Drew Talks About the Important Work of Cudeca

H

as anyone wondered why that name CUDECA? It means, Cuidados de Cancer! (Cancer care) Easy when you know. A lot of folks new to the area will have probably seen the ‘Sunflower Logo’ and badges and the green Cudeca sign on the local shops, one in Nerja and two in Torre del Mar, one of which is furniture only, and maybe wondered what it was all about! There are now twenty-five shops, the one in Malaga is quite

30 The Grapevine

upmarket and I like the lovely little one in the Maria Zambrano station concourse! There is also an online shopping site for vintage items, at: joanbycudeca.org. Why ‘Joan’, I hear you ask? Joan Hunt OBE was the founder and visionary of Cudeca in 1991, and sadly passed away on June 24th, 2021, aged 92, a truly remarkable lady. After her husband died of cancer in 1991, she realised that there was a need for a Hospice and

good palliative care in the area and indeed in Spain, and Cudeca was the first and still the only independent Hospice in the Country. There are now eleven in-patient bedrooms, each with an individual en-suite, well equipped bathroom, a tastefully decorated bedroom with hand knitted throws, embroidered cushions, and a reclining chair; also, a spare bed in which a loved one can stay. There are large patio doors in each room facing the garden, so that the beds can be slid outside in order for the patient to enjoy the benefits of the

scented garden and the sea views. Within the building is a chapel, day centre, administration offices and a small play area for children and outside a small peaceful area, with lovingly written remembrance tiles. An area in which to either reflect or just to take a much-needed minute, and the whole atmosphere, from first walking into the reception, is gentle, friendly, and comforting. There are now seven home care teams, a training rotation for professionals in in-patient and out-patient care, teaching for a diploma and master’s degree in palliative care, in partnership with Malaga University, and in the past two years 74 undergraduates from all over the world have spent time in the in-patient and outpatient units. It’s not just a Hospice but a training ground for the best care. Joan Hunt was given an OBE in 2002 for her amazing work. La Caixa made Cudeca part of their integral attention program in 2008. Yusuf and Farida Hamied Foundation joined Cudeca in 2010. (They also give generously each year). Unijaca-Cudeca agreement was in 2012. A gold medal from Andalucia in 2013. Antonio Banderas is an honorary trustee, how cool is that? As you can imagine all this didn’t happen by magic, although reading the information on the website, www.cudeca.org, they make it sound like it was plain sailing, it wasn’t. It’s always a struggle to keep a dream alive and it’s now been a long thirty years, trying to raise funds and to

think of new ways to encourage people to give support! Only a small percentage of the income comes from the Regional Ministry of Health, the rest is with regular donations, one off donations, legacies, tins, commemorative tiles, shops, and events large and small all over the Malaga province all year round. Since the Lockdown, some shops have not been running with a full staff and so far, the organization needs another 25% more volunteers. I along with many, were classed as vulnerable and could not go back to work initially, then over the past few months of inactivity some of us oldies found we were not as fit as we once were and had to stop working, so there is a great need to fill the gap by more volunteers, it’s only 4 hours a week, and good fun

This year’s Christmas market in Competa raised 1042.17 plus tins, beating 2020 of just over 720e. Normally Cindy and volunteers try to organise a coffee and cake morning, a walk for life or some other fund raiser, but sadly not this year. On December 11th there was an event in Restaurant Siddhartha on the Rock, (known by me as La Roca or Sid and Arthurs!) which raise 1115e I’m proud to say our village is very generous with support and donations from the businesses, including some in Archez and Canillas, to the general publics’ gifts for tombola, numbers board and raffle, which are normally left in at a box in La Esquina de Miguel, and of course the Grapevine magazine, who ‘held the front page’ so we could get our rather late notice in!

from the UK Government. Cudeca, over the years has helped 17,000 with one Hospice and very little official funding in the Malaga province. You can now appreciate the size of the Organization and how In the past expectations may have been unconsciously raised, both by individuals working for the charity, or by Cudeca itself and some folks are bound to fall through the ‘caring net’ and I know a few who have and others who have not. Year on year more outreach teams are being recruited and its no-good harping on about things that happened a few years ago when every year the service to the community is improving and we should get more facilities East of Malaga. Here in Competa there is a monthly Cancer support group meeting, every third Thursday at the room next to the Post Office, co-ordinated by Cindy Jones, 665156467 and grief counselling sessions are available via the Cudeca helpline, 952564910 or at local level. After Joan died, an appeal was launched for a Palliative Paediaric care centre, www.oneinamillion.es. She was one in a million and this is her legacy. This year’s calendars in her name are the shape of a sunflower, available from Cudeca shops. CUDECA-a special kind of care. Josephine Drew. www.cudeca.org

To put the funding into perspective, Marie Curie, started in 1948, and last year dealt with just over 35,000 patients and families with nine Hospices, getting a third of their funding

REFLECTIONS ON 2021 EVENTS IN COMPETA Despite COVID The Village Of Competa Still Managed To Have Fun

T

his is unusual for me. Helen asked me to do a piece for Grapevine Magazine, so I guess it’s my first commission! I’m writing this in December 2021 and outside the sun is warm, with no real rain on the horizon. Who would have thought we would still be masked up for another Navidad? Me, obviously because I kept last year’s Christmas mask! January, and the village was still reeling from Adela’s untimely

32 The Grapevine

passing from Covid on December 8th, 2020, and the three days of mourning. On the evening of the 5th was the ‘Three Kings’ but instead of the regular procession, each child under ten had a visit from a king to the delight of each child. Some people collected their TIE cards from the police station and the talk at coffee time was, ‘have you got yours yet’? February 14th, and’ San Valentin’ was celebrated, but with only a few romantic souls

going out. On 28th,’ Andalucia day’, the Ayuntamiento arranged a walk for all ages, and those who attended had a good outing doing something active again. ‘Are we Level 2 or 3’, was the coffee cry? March brought decent rainfall for the first week but on 28th , ‘Palm Sunday’, it cleared and there was a small procession from ‘San Anton’. More cases were confirmed but overall, everyone stayed reasonably calm and careful.

April was ‘Semana Santa’ and like last year, the processions did not go ahead. Malaga had non either, but that didn’t stop Spanish TV showing decorated ‘Tronos’ of yesteryear and playing sombre music repeatedly. The over seventyfives got vaccinated at Algarrobo, and the coffee talk was, ‘Have you had it, did it hurt’? Then another passing from Covid, which came as a shock because the figures had been getting lower. The gentleman belonged to a large family who had never left the confines of the village, and this got some wondering how it had been transmitted. Coffee talk was, ‘when will it end’? May, saw the ‘state of alert’ ending, but Andalucia did it in three stages, causing a bit of confusion, ‘which level are we on was the cry’? 3rd was Day of the Cross, and it went ahead from Plaza Carmen I believe. Travelling out of the region was allowed, and some visitors arrived from the UK to visit their neglected homes, and by now we were so used to masking up that when one was confronted with a ‘naked’ face, one tended to cross the road! The swimming pool opened with a ‘book in advance’ policy for 2e, and the showers sealed off. Other keep fit activities went ahead, some inside large venues and Yoga was performed outside. At last, us ‘beached whales’ could get moving. June 21st was the start culture week with various activities, one of which was the soap making. I watched fascinated as everyone stirred green or yellowish gloop in washing-up bowls, the mix expanding and eventually turned into soap! There was music on the Plaza on Saturday evening,

To advertise call 637 028 873

the infection rate was reduced, and we were at last feeling that Competa had weathered the storm. The children broke up and there were many holiday activities for all ages. July the hotels were up and running with limited capacity. The Feria from 22nd was a small one, with no rides or stalls along the streets and no foam party either, but plenty of lower key activities. August 15th is normally the large ‘Noche de Vino’ but this year’s low key one had the local Fandango and music group entertaining everyone in the Plazas Almijara and Vendimia which was really like the ‘back to the roots’ of the first Noches. Holidaymakers arrived not wearing masks, many a coffee discussion about that! The beaches were used again, and then the jelly fish arrived! A ‘Miss and Mister Malaga’ competition heats took place, with Chicos parading, all masked up! There were unmasked photos of the contestants posing on Facebook all looking wonderful! September was’ Noche de las Lumbres’ which went ahead, I think without the fire, but with music in Plaza Carmen. The’ Art Walk’, which has artists from all over attending, was a big success and everyone seemed optimistic for the future. October was ‘Noche de las Casanas’ in Plaza Vendemia, the night was warm for the 31st and the tent was full with about as many outside as inside, enjoying the music. After the past few months, it was good to greet people that hadn’t been seen for ages. All the children young and old, were dressed for ‘Halloween’ including babies in pushchairs, with Mum and Dad

all dressed too! November 1st saw the ‘All Sains Day’ trip to the Cemetery with flowers or just to go and reflect. 2nd was a badminton competition for all ages and 3rd a workshop for young children in the Town Hall. December 7th there was a trip for pensioners to Malaga, the first for a long time. Arriving at the Diputacion de Malaga we were offered a small shot of Anis on the coach, went to see the Belen, then presented with a pair of gloves, and a small cake each. The Nativity was amazing. Then onto ‘the Flavour of Malaga’ food trucks, with free food vouchers, after which was a two hour threecourse meal, then the visit to the lights and back in Competa by 9.30pm! The 12th was the start of old folk’s week with chocolate and churros, and activities during the first part of the week. On the latter part of the week was a trip to Jerez for four days for 135e! On 26th the ‘San Silvestre’ run (turkey run). The village has managed to keep up spirits with two new bars opening and two reopening, and overall, I think we have been lucky, with most people adhered to the rules. The Ayuntamiento kept the streets disinfected and throughout the year arranged other activities to numerous to mention. Thank you. Happy 2022 to all. Josephine Drew

closure and death. The symptoms of exposure to caterpillar hair are excessive drooling or frothing at the mouth, difficulty in breathing and/or white spots in the mouth or tongue. If you think your pet is suffering from these symptoms, our vet recommends you flush your animal's mouth with as much water as possible and immediately take your pet for emergency treatment. A final warning: if you are thinking of taking a pre-emptive strike against these nests you should bear in mind that they too are full of caterpillar hair, which can easily fall out when disturbed. Exposure in humans has been known to cause a severe skin irritation that can last up to three weeks, temporary blindness and/or respiratory problems. Make sure you take appropriate precautions or hire a professional.

CAS NEWS Pine Processionary Caterpillars.

W

ith the mild winter we are enjoying, the Costa Animal Society (CAS) would like to warn you that we can expect an early visit from the annual Pine Processionary Caterpillars in 2022. Pine Processionary Caterpillars usually start their annual march from their pine nest into underground burrows in late winter to early spring. They get their name because they undertake this journey in single file lines and follow one another much like a religious procession. The danger for your pets, and for humans, is that this is when we are most likely to come into contact with these rascals. At this stage of their lifecycle they possess an unusual defence mechanism. That is, they are covered in fine white poisonous hairs, which can cause reactions

ranging from an extremely itchy rash to very deadly anaphylactic shock when they are touched or ingested. During the winter Pine Processionary Caterpillars make nests, which resemble large cotton balls or white cotton candy, in our local pine trees. If you live near pine trees, especially ones with white nests, extreme care must be taken with your pets as the weather begins to warm in the spring. You should not let your dog roam free and you should try to keep your cat indoors. Unfortunately, the inherently curious nature of your pet may lead them to investigate these unusual creatures. If your pet has the misfortune to sniff, lick our bite these caterpillars your animal would likely suffer a severe allergic reaction or anaphylactic shock, possibly causing airway

Spanish home sales for the year to date were significantly higher than before the pandemic, suggesting that we are seeing a pandemic boom in real estate investment. For example it was the best october for home sales since 2007. It looks like there is a mini-housing boom in full swing post-pandemic, no doubt also encouraged by low interest rates and rising inflation. Is now the perfect time to buy in Spain? If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that life is for living and now.

CITRUS, THE ZEST OF LIFE Campo Cuttings by Lorraine Cavanagh of Viveros Florena, Cómpeta

S

tepping into 2022, we're right in the middle of all the festivities, which won´t really end until King's Day has passed. It's a long splurge of food and drink – generally too much of both! It seems like a great idea at the time but the body is on overload, jammed with too much! We've all had that YUK feeling in January, but there is

68 The Grapevine

a great way to revitalise your jaded body and that is with the super cleansing zingy taste of citrus! Around this time, the trees are producing yellow and golden globs of goodness to boost your tired immune system bringing that wonderful splash of sunshine to our gardens.

months, we'll take a close-up look at what citrus we can grow in pots or our gardens and how best to get them producing well. Many of you will have a lemon/ orange; they're such basic plantings in Spain but don´t let them lose their magic simply because they're common. Spain produces some 7.1 million tonnes of citrus annually, so join the crowd!

So, over the next couple of

To advertise call 637 028 873

The lemons that gardeners commonly grow are lunar type which means that they flower and fruit throughout the year instead of giving one large crop – it's affectionately known as the gin and tonic lemon and the variety is Eureka. Over the last few years, the Meyer lemon has entered the market in Europe. We planted a tree at Viveros Florena and it's prolific with a sweeter taste and more golden skin than a normal lemon, indicating its cross with mandarin. This is, however, a once-a-year cropper; in citrus, it is only the lunar lemon that spreads its cropping right through the year. There is also a sport of Eureka that has pink flesh and striped peel, the pink lemon. It is common enough in the USA but I've yet to see it here. One to look out for if you're a citrus collector. Oranges are one of the most important crops in Spain, some 3.7 million tonnes being produced annually. Therefore, it's no surprise that there are so many varieties, often very localised to suit conditions. Ask any Spanish person for their favourite variety of orange and they will invariably answer Washingtonia - listen to your campesino neighbours and they will all sing the praises of the "guachintonas" Its origins are unknown but it has risen from its murky background to become king of the oranges. A navel type, its fruits have a richness of flavour rarely matched; it's a great choice if you like a sweet eating orange, without sharpness. Crops from December to May. Navelina also has a great presence in Spain, and has become one of the most important varieties since its introduction from California during the 1930's. It gives large, good quality, almost seedless fruits of a cheerful orange-red colour. The trees are very productive, cropping from October through to

January. Newhall is a mutation of the Washingon variety. The tree is vigorous and productive with large round fruits of a good orange-red colour. It is seedless with a rough skin but fine flavour; a dependable orange. Cropping October to January. Navelate is one to search out. It's not so commonly grown because it can be a little temperamental. But the flavour of its fruit is exquisite, soft and juicy. This is a late cropper, from January to May and fruits will keep well. Lane Late is another late cropper, fruits can be left on the tree, increasing their sweetness through the springtime. It's a good choice for small gardens as it is one of the smaller-growing trees but produces a good crop of medium-sized fruits of good flavour. And Valencia tells you where it originates but it grows very well for us too, making a vigorous mid-sized tree with top quality fruits. They have a very high juice content, so excellent for juicing but a quality eating orange too. Seedless and with high fibre and anti-oxidant content, it's becoming a very valued variety and a useful late cropper. Blood orange is another rarity, look for it as Sanguinelli; harvesting is February, March and April. Shops are full of mandarins at this time of the year. We use mandarin as a loose term to cover three types – clementine, satsuma and hybrids, also known as tangerines. Clementines are by far the most popular, sweet, seedless, juicy and easy-peel. Satsumas have a very loose puffy skin and, generally, a milder flavour – they are used a lot in conserves. Hybrids are useful because they are late harvesting, around March. The favourite clementine, by far, is Clemenules,

believed to be a natural sport from the area of Nules in the Valencian province. Harvesting is from November to January, so just right for Christmastime. Although we don´t juice mandarins as often as oranges, this one is exceptionally juicy, sweet and seedless. If you want an earlier cropper look for Marisol or Oronule. Hybrids for later cropping are Nova and Ortanique which has a very firm skin, best peeled with a knife. Grapefruits are most popular when pink! They're sweeter, less acidic, than the original yellow. They're easily recognised by their names - Ruby, Ruby Red, Star Ruby, Red Marsh. Of these, Star Ruby is the most cultivated; it is medium size, almost seedless with a fine smooth skin flushed pink. The pulp is a good deep red with abundant sweet juice. Its only down-side is that it does not store well. Rio Red is a newer variety and set to usurp the others in terms of both quality and extended harvesting season. If you want a good yellow grapefruit, look for Duncan or Marsh. Next month look out for some of the more unusual types of citrus – lots of limes, kumquats, Buddha's Hands – and how to look after them all. If you need still more information, I have copies of my book, Citrus, the Zest of Life, available at Viveros Florena. Packed with all sorts of information about citrus, during January, the price of it is reduced to just €10 Viveros Florena re-opens on 11th January, 10am until 4pm, closed Sundays and Mondays. Meanwhile the team would like to wish you all a very happy new year. Ever the optimist – it can only get better!

ON- LINE CHURCH We are an exclusively online church based in Spain catering the needs of believers who either are not able to or not comfortable attending a physical chruch service. We have services both in English and Spanish during the week that include Suday Preaching, Daily 5 min Devotionals, Prayer meetings and Bible Study. We are available for personal counselling a time of prayer or just to answer any of your questions regarding faith. All our services are free. In these uncertain times, where there is an increase in anxiety, suicides and broken families, we are reaching out with a message of hope through the Gospel. The name of the ministry is Karma to Christ, as my wife and I both came out of Hinduism when we heard the message of salvation through Jesus. Pastor Mahesh Shivnani + (34) 623351281 www.karma2christ.com MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION NERJA BRANCH Last year saw us yet again in the middle of a global pandemic. As a proud branch of the Royal British Legion we coped extremely well. This is entirely due to our members and supporters who

never fail to amaze us with their generosity . In 2021 we raised approximately 9000 euro for the Poppy Appeal. An excellent result for a small branch. Thank you all for your donations and support. Moving forward we are delighted to welcome Dennis Bolsover as our new President and Sylvia le Duc as Secretary. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all and your families a happy, healthy and prosperous 2022. Eddie Bowe Chairman Royal British Legion Nerja Branch

TORROX STREET LIGHTNING The mayor of Torrox, Óscar Medina, has reported on the work to replace the public lighting, being replaced by LED lights, which is being carried out in the municipality. Specifically, the light points on the access roads to Torrox both from Torrox Costa and from the Colina del Sol roundabout will be replaced. With this replacement, about 11,700 kg will no longer be emitted into the atmosphere. of CO2 per year and will mean a saving of more than 14,000 euros per year to the municipal coffers.

AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION Buzz is a young Border Collie type dog who was found on the San Juan de Capistrano urbanisation in Nerja last month after wandering the streets near the tower for a few days. His photos and story have been shared on social media as a found dog but no owner has come forward. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) is now advertising Buzz for rehoming. He is an 18 month-old male who has the coat, colouring and size of a smooth Collie with the temperament and good nature to match. Buzz is a sweet boy who loves to please people and he gets along well with other dogs. He would make a wonderful companion for a single person or a family of two or more and he will be easily trained. If you would like to meet one of the animals under the care of the Costa Animal Society (CAS), and are looking to adopt or are willing to foster a pet please contact Kurt and Laura at 95 252 1426 or view the CAS website and Facebook page. PETROL STATION ROBBERY Two men aged 29 and 30 have been arrested in Nerja by agents of the National Police as allegedly responsible for the robbery of a gas station in Vélez-Málaga; an action that was carried out in just under a minute, obtaining a loot of about 400 euros.

INVESTMENT IN NERJA Tourism invests more than 100,000 euros in the redevelopment of the Balcón de Europa in Nerja , as reported by the territorial delegate for Tourism of the Junta in Malaga, Nuria Rodríguez, who has visited the town of Axáquica. Rodríguez has met with the mayor, José Alberto Armijo Navas , and the Councilor for Tourism, Gema García. These aids granted by the Ministry of Tourism this year to the town are part of the line that is intended for Andalusian tourist municipalities. COUNCIL APPROVES WORKS PROJECTS IN TEN MUNICIPALITIES OF THE AXARQUÍA FOR 1.7 MILLION EUROS In its last meeting, the Governing Board of the Malaga Provincial Council approved works projects to be carried out in ten municipalities in the Axarquía for a total amount of 1,741,909.39 euros. These are actions to be financed by the provincial institution through the Provincial Assistance and Cooperation Plan and the Municipal Economy Boost Plan. In La Viñuela, two projects have been given the green light for a total of 418,974.89 euros. On the one hand, the adaptation of the platform and access to the Post Office and the A7205 road in Casado stream is
