Editors Note... As we enter the month of June there does feel a sense of moving forward and some sense of normality. Andalucia does seem to be rolling out the vaccine fairly quickly now. Business is certainly not normal for most but perhaps a light at the end of the tunnel can be seen for everyone... let's hope so.

Although life hasn't been great for most people over the pandemic many families have also had to deal with other sad situations such as the young family from Canillas De Albaida. They recently found out their son was suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a neuromuscular disease, which manifests itself by a progressive loss of muscle strength. This has been devastating for the family and they have had little financial help to give their son Hignicio the most comfortable start to a difficult life. The local community has got together to raise funds for them and the disease. Take a look on pages 46 to 48 to see how you can help too. The village of Competa celebrates its cultural week from June 21st to 27th with leisure, cultural and alternative activities for everyone along with a “Ruta de la Tapa". If you haven´t visited Competa before why not visit during Cultural week. Take a look on page 53 to find out more about what is happening in the village.

U NEWS IN SPAIN This Months Update

T

here are just a few weeks left to exchange any remaining pesetas into euros, as the countdown to the end of life for the Spanish currency looms on 30 June. Those still in possession of the original Spanish currency have been urged to exchange it into euros over the next couple of months before the deadline, which was extended by six months from its original date of 31 December 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The peseta was replaced by the euro on 1 January 1999 on currency exchange boards, with euro coins and notes introduced into general circulation in January 2002. On 1 March 2002 the peseta ceased to have legal tender status, with 166.386 pesetas converting to 1 euro at that time. This is the rate that will be used to calculate the value for any pesetas brought in for exchange before the June deadline. It is estimated that there is still approximately 1.6 billion euros worth of pesetas in circulation, held in coins and notes stored in boxes, purses and attics in Spain and across the world.

S

pain’s ‘autónomo’ system is expected to change, as the government proposes an overhaul to the process under which self-employed workers pay social security contributions. The proposed changes are attracting controversy, as some self-employed workers could be required to pay more. It’s estimated that social security payments would be between 90 and 1,220 euros per month, in addition to income tax. Currently, 85% of the self-employed pay around 250 euros per month, regardless of income earned. Under the existing rules, the selfemployed can choose a contribution base for social security, that triggers a set monthly fee to pay and therefore is not determined by the actual income of the worker. The proposed new system would create 13 contribution brackets, based directly on income or estimated revenue. Workers can change bracket up to 6 times a year and an adjustment would be made if there was a discrepancy between contributions made based on the estimate and actual revenue achieved at the end of the year,

S film director Wes Anderson, 52, is to shoot his next film in Chinchón in southeast Madrid during July, August and September. Although scarcely a single detail of the allAmerican production has been leaked, the sets simulating a Western-style desert are clearly visible on the edge of the town despite the fact that the movie does not reportedly belong to this genre. Over 20 people are busy getting everything ready to shoot by mid-July, by which time Anderson will have premiered his last movie The French Dispatch at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Anderson has reportedly chosen Spain as the backdrop for his latest endeavour on account of its landscape and also the quality of its service companies and local production companies that take care of the paperwork, set construction, accommodation, transport and other related matters.

A

s the country’s coronavirus data improves thanks to the vaccination drive, the Spanish Health Ministry is considering reducing some of the Covid-19 restrictions that are currently in place. That’s according to Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Center for Health Alerts (CCAES), who held a press conference on Monday evening to present the latest report on the epidemic. The government’s chief epidemiologist announced that “it is very possible” that the obligatory use of masks outdoors will be revised “in just a few days.”

SPEED LIMITS

Speed Limit Changes

S

PEED LIMITS: On May 11th, 2021 speed limits in Spain changed, as 6 months have passed since this new law’s publication in the #BOE by Royal Decree 970/2020, of November 10th that modifies the RGC.

NEW GENERAL SPEED LIMITS on URBAN ROADS, the following: 20 km / h on roads that have a single carriageway and path/sidewalk. 30 km / h on single lane roads per direction of travel. 50 km / h on roads with two or more lanes per traffic direction. These apply within towns / villages / cities, urban areas.

12 The Grapevine

FINES for EXCEEDING the SPEED set by the road, depending on how much the imposed limit is exceeded, can be either SERIOUS or VERY SERIOUS, thus differentiating the amount of the penalty. The margin for mistakes will always be applied to the corresponding speeds of course. You will not be fined for going exactly 1km over the speed limit! Don't forget they allow space for mistakes. The aim is to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries in road accidents by 50% over the coming decade, in line with European Union and World Health Organisation recommendations. The long-term target will be to reduce these

figures to zero by 2050. Changing the speed limit from 50 km/h to 30 km/h could reduce the likelihood of deaths in road accidents five-fold. Moreover, this change is not expected to impact urban traffic journey times. Similar reforms are being made in other European Member States. In the Netherlands a majority in the House of Representatives recently approved a proposal to reduce the speed limit on streets in built-up areas from 50 km/h to 30 km/h. Other regions are following suit, with the governing coalition of the Belgian capital Brussels agreeing to apply a default 30 km/h limit throughout the city.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Payment Of Taxes For Non-Residents By Transfer From Abroad

P

ayment of taxes for nonresidents by transfer from abroad. An important resolution of the Spanish Tax Agency (AEAT) was produced on January 18, 2021 to provide tax payment facilities to non-residents. As of March 15, 2021, you can make the payment of taxes by transfer from abroad. In this way, non-resident taxpayers will be able to pay most of their taxes by transfer from abroad, without the need to have a bank account in our country. The taxpayer must bear in mind that it is always better to make the payment of taxes from a bank in Spain, since this mode of tax payment is simpler and more direct. The payment procedure from abroad is a bit complicated. To make the payment by transfer,

14 The Grapevine

the non-resident must do the following:

by bank transfer from abroad.

1) Submit the self-assessment electronically by checking the option "Acknowledgment of debt and payment by transfer".

Should you need any assistance with the preparation or payment of your Spanish taxes do not hesitate to contact our Law office. We have tax specialist who will be happy to assist.

2) Next, you must inform the account number from which you will make the transfer. 3) Once this is done, the system will inform you of the account to which you must transfer the money and will assign a code (which will generally be the NIF / NIE of the non-resident). 4) Within 30 days, the nonresident must transfer the money, indicating the previous code as the concept of the transfer.

Axarquia Solicitors Tel. 952 901 225 mail@axarquiasolicitors.com For further information or advice on this matter, do not hesitate to contact us either: by phone on 952 901 225 by WhatsApp at 646 776 118 by e-mail: mail@marbellasolicitors.com See Advert Opposite

CONCLUSION: non-residents can now pay their taxes in Spain

THE BEST OLIVE OILS IN MALAGA 2021 Finca La Torre, Hacienda De Colchado And Promociones Cimat Álora

T

he contest celebrates 20 years helping to promote the liquid gold in the province. The Finca La Torre, Hacienda de Colchado and Promociones Cimat Álora XXII oil mills are the winners of the XX Prize for the best Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the province of Malaga . It is a contest that the Provincial Council organizes with the aim of "highlighting, publicizing and helping to improve, disseminate and commercialize Malaga's oils . " The tasting and the jury's decision took place last month at the Victoria Factory in Malaga, where the jury selected the best oils from the 2020-2021 harvest. The award ceremony was chaired by the first vice president and deputy for Economic and Sustainable Development, Juan Carlos Maldonado , who stressed that "these awards, in addition to

16 The Grapevine

stimulating the production of higher quality oils in the province of Malaga, contribute to their value and improve the market position of a product that is a basic pillar of our diet and that currently enjoys great international projection ". This contest, which this year 20 celebrates 20 years. Its is a "reference" for the province and the sector and "represents an economic incentive for our oil mills and essential institutional support after a particularly difficult year for our olive sector. Last year it was impossible to hold the contest due to the outbreak of the Corona Virus. The Provincial Council chose to buy 1,000 euros in oil from each of the 15 oil mills to alleviate the economic situation" that the Covid-19 had caused. Due to the quality of the samples presented, the jury decided to award second prizes , in the

medium green fruity modality, to the 'Único de Mondrón' oil from Olivarera San José Artesano SCA . A total of 16 oil mills , belonging to 15 municipalities in the province and the regions of Guadalteba, Guadalhorce, Axarquía, Antequera, Sierra de las Nieves, Serranía de Ronda and Nororma attended the twentieth edition of the contest . The award is an order of 15,000 euros plus VAT , which is divided between three categories (extra virgin olive oil, ripe fruity, intense green fruity and medium green fruity). The winning oil mills also enter the national and international promotion and marketing circuit of the Sabor a Málaga brand and the Costa del Sol tourism promotion company, and may display the reference to the award on the label.

SPRING FATIGUE Exercise Is The Answer

F

atigue, headache, sleepiness... many people consult their GP’s at this time of year. Feeling tired and weak? Forget vitamin supplements - go out and do sport. The feeling of being physically and mentally tired, sometimes known as spring fever, tends to be mild in most cases and it goes after a few days without any treatment being needed, although it is true that to combat the symptoms you do need to lead a healthy lifestyle all year round," said Dr Ana Cristina Serrano, a member of the working group on Nutrition at the Spanish Society of General Practitioners (SEMERGEN). The feeling of not wanting to do anything, and a general lack of physical and mental energy,

22 The Grapevine

tends to occur more frequently in April, May and June, which is why it is known as 'spring fever'. This is something that occurs as the body responds to seasonal climate change, more hours of daylight, different timetables, and a range of temperatures," said Cristina Fernández Marcos, the coordinator of the Information Centre of Medication and Quality of the General Council of the Official Colleges of Pharmacists. What to do about it? Exercise Get some exercise and you'll feel less exhausted Yes, you did read that correctly. The more exercise you do, the less tired you will feel. Although getting off the sofa is the last thing you feel like doing, make yourself practise sport regularly.

Eat properly Stick to a healthy, balanced diet and reduce your consumption of fats and refined carbohydrates. The vitamins in fruit and vegetables will help to reinforce your immune system and combat the lack of energy associated with asthenia. Stay hydrated Being hydrated is essential for our bodies to function properly. Drink water, natural fruit juices and herbal teas. Don't overdo coffee or alcohol. A light supper Avoid heavy meals, and try to eat the last one of the day at least two hours before going to bed. Regular bedtimes Try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day.

FAMILY HIKES IN THE AXARQUÍA AND BEYOND BluCee Can Help You Find Your Next Home

W

hen we moved to Málaga we were excited about enjoying the food and discovering the culture, the beaches, the people and the weather. We knew we’d be able to ski during the day and dine on the beach in the evening. But hiking hadn’t really been on our minds. As a keen trail runner I discovered a lot of the countryside local to us in the Rincón de la Victoria area. But I did this mostly alone. Family joining me? You’ve got to be kidding! And then lockdown happened, and the children experienced weeks inside not being allowed to leave our (small but much appreciated) garden. As the

24 The Grapevine

restrictions were lifted we all suddenly got the urge to stretch our legs. Not that there weren’t tears from some members of the family on those first couple of exploratory hikes. We set out to Canillas de Albaida and the fabrica de luz. A lot of complaining was heard at the back, and then as we reached the top the children felt a great appreciation for what they’d accomplished as they looked down on the world below them. It was the start of a new family pastime. We roped in friends and headed to Alcaucin. As any parent knows children who would previously grumble over walking 500m suddenly find boundless energy when friends are involved. A 15km midday hike one

surprisingly hot weekend last October had our dog wondering what on earth had got into us but the children raced on ahead. The beauty of the Ruta Botanica, although we may have taken some slight detours after “discussions” on which way to turn, means that it’s a firm favourite to return to again and again. In groups and by ourselves we walked and hiked around the Axarquía and beyond, staying mostly in Málaga province with the odd detour into Granada when restrictions allowed. Intently studying Wikiloc (a great app if you don’t know it) to find the best route. Our children are part of the Jóvenes Exploradores run by the Club Montaña Rincón which has

To advertise call 637 028 873

also added to our hikes as they point out things they’ve learnt at camp. Recently a new favourite, and definitely more challenging, hike around Ardales where the only way of knowing we were on a tried and tested route was to make sure we followed the mini cairns (stone stacks) placed by those who’d braved it before us led me to wonder what our next challenge could be. So my sights are set on a trek up Maroma, I think I’ll go without children at first to get my bearings, but whereas a year ago I’d never have imagined them being able to complete it, now I know they can. As someone who looks for the positives in everything, this is

To advertise call 637 028 873

definitely something we can take as something good that came from the last year of Covid restrictions. Now with the weather warming up it’s even more important to prepare before you head out. Plan a route, set off as early as you can in the morning, take double the amount of water you think you need, pack a hat and sun protection, bring high energy snacks like dried fruit and make sure your phone is charged. You don’t want to become a local news story! Vía de la Plata

CULTURAL ROUTES Route Ideas To Explore The Culture & History Of Spain

T

hese tours are the perfect way to visit Spain if you’re interested in its culture and history. They trace long routes through large areas to reveal the legacy of the many civilisations which have made their home here. You can pick and choose from the routes to suit the time you have available and the historic sites you want to see. These itineraries are pathways into the traditions of the areas, bringing to life the words of the poet Machado: “Wanderer, there is no path, the path is made by walking”. The Vía de la Plata (Silver Route) This was the main road of the Roman Empire in Spain. It connected the north and south of Roman Hispania, and today leads to fascinating destinations like Seville, Cáceres, Salamanca, León, Gijón and Mérida. This last city holds one of the world’s bestconserved Roman archaeological complexes, now a UNESCO World

Heritage site, one of many along the route, including the monuments of Seville, Cáceres, León and Salamanca. The Route of Charles V You can retrace the last journey of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V on this route through the regions of Cantabria, Castilla y León, and Extremadura. The itinerary begins in Laredo (Cantabria), where the Emperor arrived in 1556 at the start of his journey to the Monastery of Yuste (in Cuacos de Yuste, Extremadura). Here he would spend his last days, retired from public life. Pathways of Passion Tradition, art and popular culture mark this route through inland Andalusia. Follow the path to discover 10 villages in the provinces of Jaén, Cordoba and Seville.

you can see the art of the earliest Europeans. We’re talking about Altamira and the Palaeolithic cave paintings of the Cantabrian coast, which together form a UNESCO World Heritage site, but there are many more caves, shelters and megalithic constructions in almost all of Spain where you can see art created by our distant ancestors. The Way of El Cid This literary and historical route follows the footsteps of the legendary Cid Campeador, the hero of the famous 12th-century Castilian poem, “Cantar de Mío Cid”. The route passes through the regions of Castilla y León, CastillaLa Mancha, Aragon and Valencia, where you can visit UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Burgos Cathedral, the Mudéjar architecture of Aragon, and the Palm Grove of Elche, as well as many natural spaces.

MALAGA 2021 Josephine Drew Gets Out And About In Malaga, At Last!

I

escaped on a bus trip to Malaga (it felt quite devilish), in Mid-April with a friend who confessed to being a ‘Bus Virgin’. I thought this would be a good opportunity to revise the trip through another person’s perspective and help some newer residents of the village with the vagaries of the Loymerbus and its charms. They are coaches, not your average buses, comfortable, with seat belts and air conditioning, but here is a small tip, try to sit near the front because the back can swing a bit on the Competa to Sayalonga part and besides which, the teenagers prefer the back! The bus times over the past year have been revised and continue to be revised. This information is from April 20th! 2021. From Competa, Monday to Saturday the times are 9.45am and 3.55pm and from Malaga are 11.30am and 6.30pm. At present

34 The Grapevine

there are no Sunday services, early morning, or mid-afternoons, but hopefully they will return. Normally a list is pinned at the bus shelter (old ones are there now), from the driver or the Loymerbus web site. The cost is under 5e one way, or half price for card carrying pensioners. The morning bus starts from Canillas at 9.30am and takes five minutes to reach Competa where it waits until 9.45am, sometimes without a driver. One likes to go for a bottle of water, the other to the café for a cigarette, (this, after they have taken the initial passengers’ fares)! He will leave promptly, arriving in Malaga at about 11.15am depending on the traffic! Hand sanitizers are at the doorway and the driver sanitizes his hands after every money transaction with a bottle by the side of him. When it reaches El Ingenio there is a twenty-seater bus waiting for passenger transfers. I didn’t recognise the new driver and forgot to tell him we had decided to stop at Malaga Port, thinking I

would ring the bell, unfortunately, there are no bells on the smaller buses, and as we reached Malaga a passenger went forward and told him she needed the Port. The stop is not exactly at Malaga port entrance but further down the road. I am pointing this out because for return journey the stop is not opposite the arrivals stop, but towards the Malaga port shops at the end of the Bus Station by the red Malaga bus pole, (just past the Alsa ticket office) then wait and watch for the arrival at 6.35pm to 40pm. (For first time passengers this can be odd, but years ago both stops were opposite each other)! Usually there are many buses from different companies queuing to get out the Station so when you see it, flag it down! If by any chance the bus is missed, the best solution is to go to the Alsa ticket office and go to either Algarrobo Costa (Mercadona stop), or Torre del Mar (Bus Station) and get a taxi from there which will be cheaper. (Or phone a friend)! We headed for the Information

Office, walking back on ourselves, with a quick coffee and cake in Bob’s Café on the corner, along by the children’s playground and then took the next small street on the left towards Calle Larios. The Office is on the right, up the long steps and for some reason it was closed that Tuesday, but normally open. I then had to ‘Google’ to see if some of the thirty or, so Museums were open and found the Glass, Wine, Cars and Costumes, and Russian were temporarily closed, but all worth a visit, (this is from a non-Museum person). This side of town has the Cathedral, Alcazaba, Roman Theatre, Malaga, Glass, Wine and Picasso Museums and the large, Plaza de la Merced, famed as containing Picasso’s childhood home, and has been an area of Malaga since the Romans. Gibarlfaro Castle is quite a walk but the’ hop on hop off’ buses are good way to get a feeling for this compact old town. This side also has Calle Larios. On the Port side is the Pompidou Centre, (rubic cube) and the Aquarium. After the Information office we decided to head for Revello de Torro, a museum and art gallery housed in a centuries old house in Malaga and the Malaga Musum. Firstly, for my friend to get her bearings we started at Calle Larios, heading for the Cathedral (going by Mc Donalds) along Plaza de la Marina and turning first left, keeping the Cathedral on the right, then first turn right onto Calle Cister, (carry on walking and you find the Picasso Museum) past the gardens and an 1800’s restaurant and next right is Calle Afligidos with an 1890’s bar on the corner; and there is the Revello de Torro Musum , which has portraits, drawings and old Feria Posters and OAPs are free, its 2 minutes from Picasso. Before carrying on to the bottom of Calle Cister and the Malaga Museum, we popped into my favourite shop, for things ‘you didn’t know you wanted’, Ale Hop, with the black and white cow

outside, and got retro sunglasses, 5e and a jazzy spec case, 2e! The Malaga museum, largest in Andalucia, (free to EU and 1.50e for others) is housed in a large white Italianate Palace, dating from 1791, and at the main front door are several palm trees. There were only about six visitors viewing the many Roman artifacts, and there are other exhibits from different eras, but we were cultured out, deciding to give the Roman Theatre and El Pimpi a miss, both of which are in this area, as is also the Alcazaba, then the Roman theatre and carrying on along is the Plaza de la Merced. El Pimpi, needs a mention, this is on the left past the theatre ruins, with tables outside but it’s the old building that’s interesting. Walk through passing the signed barrels, and restaurant tables to the interior courtyard covered in greenery, past the bar then out via the huge turn of the century Feria posters, an indoor pretty courtyard and into another old street. (My cousins from Australia were blown away with the old posters). Our next stop was the Municipal Market, closed in the afternoons, but a lovely building. We headed in the direction of Calle Larios, (built in 1891) wide and pedestrianised, with seating and expensive shops. This is a good start for a day out because it leads to Plaza Constitucion the hub of fun for the Feria, and other fiestas! If you turn down the first road left from the Plaza, past Costa Coffee on the left and Punto Roma on the right, there are lots of interesting small shops, even a shop for tea pots. The other road at the top on the left gets to the Carmen Thyssen Museum and more small shops. Some with dresses in colourful satins, looking like evening dresses, but normally worn to weddings, and a couple selling traditional dresses, which are

worn for the two-week Feria. Following Larios to the end, you can turn right or left, either takes in interesting places. If you decide to stop over in Malaga, I can recommend a free walking tour with ‘Exploramalaga.com’, starting from Plaza Constitucion. It’s online booking and leaves at 11am most mornings with Englishspeaking guides. Lunch was tapas in Taberna de Pintxos, on Calle Alarcon Lujan, which specialises in a fusion of Northern and Southern foods of Spain. A tad more expensive with excellent staff and clean toilets! Then a walk up the newly refurbished Alemeda Principal, on our way to Antigua Casa de Guardia the oldest wine bar in the City, but for some reason that was closed. (No cheeky Vermut). The revamped avenue leads to El Cortes Ingles, and what a joy it is to walk, with a large pedestrian area protecting the century old trees, ((planted in 19thC). The street was conceived at the same time as Larios, makng it the place for the rich to reside, indeed you can still see glimpses of the grandeur of the architecture if you look up and not on the map or phone! The flower market is now over the other side of the road with only about three or four stalls, but they still sell good quality plants. When the Metro was being constructed the council rerouted some buses from the main road, making it pedestrianised, planting shrubs and in doing so have cut emissions in the centre. At the end by the bridge to the left is the Modern Art Gallery, on Calle Almania with free admission, then over the bridge is a road which heads towards the train and bus stations. To catch the bus back at 6.30pm go through the entrance near the Metro El Perchel, the stand is either no 6 or 7, but there is a sign. The bus arrives in the bay about 6pm and the driver has a break. Our next trip maybe the Metro, just to see where that takes us.

HEALTHY SPANISH FOODS Mediterranean Food At Its Best

S

panish cuisine emphasizes raw ingredients from the region’s rugged landscape. Small plates with high-quality ingredients are common, as is seafood and vegetables. While Iberico ham and manchego cheese are rich, Spain has many light and healthy options. We’ve assembled a list of 10 healthy Spanish foods, including both raw ingredients and finished dishes. Olives The little olive sits at the center of the Spanish culinary world. Whether you are eating raw olives or drizzling extra virgin olive oil over some crusty bread and veggies, you’re doing your body a favor. Olives contain monounsaturated fats that decrease the risk of heart disease and boost HDL cholesterol. Olives also have antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties, meaning they can help prevent diseases and some forms of cancer.

Gazpacho If you find yourself sweating beneath a hot mid-day sun in Barcelona, duck into a shaded cafe and order a bowl of gazpacho. This iconic Spanish soup is made from blended vegetables and served chilled. Like most Spanish dishes, there are as many variations of gazpacho as there are regions of Spain. But expect this light and refreshing snack to include some tomatoes, onion, garlic, and olive oil, in addition to other local veggies and spices. Anchovies In the pre-dawn darkness of the early morning hours, fleets of fishing vessels spread out along the Spanish coast in search of the day’s catch. Spain is a country composed of an extensive and varied coastline. It is also master of an island in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. That means a lot of fish ends up on Spanish menus. One of the most popular is the Anchovy, an umamibomb full of Omega-3 fatty acids,

B vitamins, iron, and protein. While many anchovies come packed in salt, it can be rinsed off in the water. Red Wine Tempranillo, Rioja, Garnacha… Spain boasts an impressive array of world-renowned wine varieties.. They are often a bit spicy, with distinct red and dark fruit notes. While too much wine is definitely a bad thing, moderate amounts contribute to heart health. The combination of alcohol and grapes brings antioxidants which increase HDL cholesterol and lower LDL. Wine also helps you unwind, which decreases stress and the chance of the diseases that come with it. Lentils This little legume is filling, full of fibre, and carries the flavour of spices. They’re also very inexpensive, which is why they are popular in rural dishes across Spain. 1 cup of lentils contains 63% of your daily requirement of soluble fibre This helps regulate blood sugar, improves digestion, and facilitates weight loss. Lentils

also contain nutrients important to heart health like magnesium and iron. Pisto Manchego This Spanish ratatouille originates from La Mancha, the arid setting of Don Quixote. It is a stew that with the slightly sweet and roasted flavour of eggplants, acidity from tomatoes, freshness from squash and red peppers, and savoriness from onion. The veggie stew is brimming with antioxidants, fibre, and important vitamins. Eat it with some crusty bread and enjoy a delicious dinner! Almonds Almonds are a heart-healthy snack found in a number of Spanish dishes and deserts. They are rich in the manganese, riboflavin, and copper your body needs to convert food into energy. They are also low on the glycemic index, which makes them a useful aid in maintaining health blood sugar levels. But their best attribute is that they are high in mono unsaturated fats. That means that they are a heart-healthy alternative

to animal fats if you need to reduce your cholesterol levels. Citrus Fruits Sour citrus flavours compliment many Spanish dishes. The region of Valencia is filled with orange and lemon orchards that emit a fragrant smell of orange blossom throughout the year. Whether you are eating an orange whole or cooking it as part of a dish, you can take solace in the fact that you are eating well. Citrus limonoids are proven to fight numerous cancers. Oranges are also renowned for their high levels of vitamin C, which keeps your immune system working. Citrus fruits are also high in fibre and low in sugar, bringing intense flavour without the risk of diabetes. Octopus The eight legged cephalopod is an exotic dish unfamiliar to most Americans. But a properly tenderized octopus tentacle at a Tapas bar will eliminate any hesitancy about the dish’s

deliciousness. Octopus is high in healthy omega-3 polyunsaturated fats, which are essential to maintaining heart health. It is also low in fat and calories, while providing an impressive 30 grams of protein. It also contains a large amount of B vitamins. The one drawback is that is high in cholesterol, so adopt your diet accordingly if you plan to eat some octopus. Chickpea Salad If you want a hearty vegetarian meal try one of Spain’s many bean salads or stews. The Iberian peninsula is home to a patchwork of different types of beans, including many types of chickpea, or garbanzo, beans. Whether you prefer the fleshy Castellano chickpea from southern Spain or the buttery Fuentesuco chickpea from Castile-Leon, you are opting for a food rich in fibre and minerals. Chickpeas are a great source of protein for vegetarians.

THE MOST UNSPOILT BEACHES OF MALAGA Explore The hidden Beaches In The Area

L

ast year when we reached the centre of the pandemic , one of the most striking images left by the passage of Covid was the recovery by the fauna in spaces that until then belonged to humans for progressive colonization. The Malaga coast has suffered from tourist pressure year after year as economic plans involve attracting more and more visitors each season. However, there are still some beaches that buck this trend listed below. Calaceite Beach In Torrox Nestled in an exceptional natural environment, the services of this sandy area are not those of an urban beach like those that we can find in other places in Torrox and the rest of the Costa del Sol . Small and sheltered , it is one of the most recommended places on the Malaga coast for snorkelling and diving, an open secret which manages to make this cove a

place with a low presence of tourists. Still escaping construction, Calaceite beach with its dark and rough sand, runs parallel to the national highway, but is sheltered under the protection of mountain ranges. Rubios Beach in Rincón de la Victoria With no promenade or large infrastructures, Los Rubios beach explores new ways to attract visitors without destroying its natural space. In addition, it is a green space that is added to that of La Serrezuela park . Chullera de Manilva beach This beach lacks a promenade and has special scenic interest due to the rocky formation that surrounds it and from which emerge stones, gravel and golden sands. It is for that reason that the main tourist interest of this beach is its

ecological wealth and the beautiful landscape that it offers its visitors, as well as the cleanliness of its waters. The beach at Chullera in Manilva borders the province of Cádiz . In fact, it delfines the separation between Malaga and Cádiz, also known as Punta de Cala Sardina , due to its proximity to this Cadiz beach. The difficult access on foot to reach this cove means that very few can enjoy it, which has allowed for its conservation . Almayate beach in Vélez-Málaga Located 8 kilometers from the city of Vélez-Málaga , not having a promenade and having few services , has allowed this beach to remain almost desolate and very isolated. An example of what the rest of the Malaga coast was many years ago, long before the excessive rush for urbanization, Almayate

stretch of coastline that also has areas dedicated to nudism.

The Maro beaches, made up of a mixture of coarse, dark sand and stones, do not have a promenade , since they are located at the foot of the Maro - Cerro Gordo Cliffs , which gives it a wild appearance.

Cabopino beach in Marbella The Cabopino or Artola Dunes are considered a National Monument and became a protected area due to their natural interest in 2001.

This beach is not one of the most frequented beaches on the Malaga coast , although around it, being in an urban environment, other services are provided.

This fossil and mobile dune cord has a length of approximately 20 kilometers and provides shelter for one of the most beautiful beaches on our Costa del Sol, which is much shorter, just over a km.

Located in the EL Morche area , it generally has a moderate swell and a lot of vegetation. The temptation of growth in this area is high due to its proximity to Torrox , but we hope it is respected and not overcrowded until it is unrecognizable.

This coastline is made up of many confined areas such as the beach of Las Alberquillas , the cove of the Paper Mill , La Caleta , the cove of the Cañuelo , the cove El Pino , the cove of the Maidens -located between the rock of the Fraile and Punta Caleta - or Cantarriján beach . Some of these coves are hidden between the Maro Cliffs , which

This Cabopino beach , with golden sands, stands out for its scenic value and finds its best colours in the vegetation that surrounds it. Fortunately, services and facilities are not very abundant on this

La Carraca beach in Torrox Again in Torrox, this beach also has a well-preserved dune cord and it is a beach that does not have a promenade or any beach bar, so it is not very attractive for the average tourist.

strength. Higinio will be two years old on May 27 and since the disease was detected his parents have had to face significant expenses to make the life of their son more pleasant. For example continuous physiotherapist sessions, speech therapists, all kinds of adapted materials, a wheelchair etc. For Fátima and Higinio, the young family from Canillas de Albaida, nothing was easy but they did what they could, all with the aim

of raising funds for help in research and finding a cure. The father began to sell bracelets, calendars, wooden mounts for the mobile with all proceeds going to the Spinal Muscular Atrophy Foundation (FundAME). ENSALADA RUSA Everything You Need To Know To Make This Popular Spanish Tapas Dish

E

nsaladilla Rusa has its roots in Russia— in Moscow to be exact. It was here that Belgian chef Lucien Olivier invented this classy version of a potato salad, while working in the exclusive Hermitage Restaurant. Unfortunately, the secretive Olivier took the original recipe to his grave, but food historians think that it was topped with expensive ingredients such as venison and perhaps even caviar. Ingredients 1 kilogram of potatoes 1/2 Kilogram of carrots 1/2 Kilogram of green beans 1 tablespoon of capers 1/4 kilogram of peas 1/4 kilogram of beets (optional!

they taste great but dye the salad pink. Serve apart on the side 2 eggs 2/3 cup 160 ml Olive oil Splash of sherry vinegar or substitute red wine vinegar Salt and pepper Optional: Can of high quality tuna fish or 1 cup cooked shrimp Instructions To prepare the potatoes, wash them and cover them with cold water and a pinch of salt. Bring them to a boil and cook until just tender-- don't overcook or they'll fall apart. Let them cool completely, remove their skin and cut into cubes. To prepare the beets, cover them in cold water with a squeeze of lemon juice or a splash of vinegar

to prevent them from bleeding. Boil until tender (about an hour) then rinse under cold water. The skin should peel off easily. Reserve some of the beet for decorating the salad if you wish (the housewife manual suggests cutting thin round disks for decoration) and cube the rest. Remember only to add these to the salad if you don't mind the bleeding which will make a pink salad. To prepare the carrots, peel them first and then add them to cold water. Bring to a boil and take off the heat the moment they become tender (you want to cook them just a bit, not completely). Run them under cold water until manageable and cut into cubes. Boil the green bean until cooked and dice.

Boil the peas until cooked. Prepare the shrimp if using. Add raw shrimp to a pot of boiling water, leave in for 1-2 minutes until the water just starts to boil again, then take them out and put them right into a bowl with ice and cold water (a ice bath). Peel when cool. Boil one of the eggs until hardboiled. Reserve the other. To prepare the mayonnaise: Separate the yolk and the white very carefully. In a small bowl, add a pinch of salt and a few drops of vinegar and then beat in the egg yolk. When combined, start to slowly add in the olive oil, beating very quickly to allow emulsification. When it has the consistency of mayonnaise, reserve a little (about 1/4) for decorating the salad. Beat the egg white to stiff peaks. Slowly add the beaten egg white into the remaining mayonnaise (this is your clarified mayonnaise).

Putting it all together In a large serving platter mix together half of all of the cooked ingredients with some of the clarified mayonnaise (meaning the batch with the egg whites included). Mix the rest of each vegetable with the egg-yolk only mayonnaise and decorate the top of the salad with different coloured mountains of different vegetables. Decorate with capers and the leftover beets. Slice the hard boiled egg on top and use it to decorate too. You can also top with shrimp for decoration.

If the level of decoration has you a little perplexed, don’t worry, just carefully mix everything together– it’ll be delicious Enjoy your homemade Spanish style Russian potato salad with crunchy breadsticks and crackers. And you can enjoy this dish all year long, as in Spain ensaladilla Rusa is typically served cold in the warmer months, while in Russia it actually makes up part of their Christmas dinner. Most importantly, enjoy!

CAS NEWS This Months Update

J

uno, the old gent, is still looking for a forever home. He was rescued from the campo earlier in the year and was suffering from a chronically abscessed tooth that had created an ulcerated wound through his right cheek. The Costa Animal Society (CAS) took the dog to their vet who prescribed antibiotics after removing the bad tooth and Juno was placed in kennels to recover his health with regular meals and a soft bed. However, the infected area turned out to be antibiotic resistant and after a few different treatments over the next several months it still persisted as an open wound. After the fourth examination the vet decided to take cultures and send them to the lab to pinpoint which medicine would be the most effective. The final course of specialised antibiotics did the trick and Juno’s face is now healing well. So much so he was vaccinated, chipped and castrated in November. Juno has an independent personality and is quite used to being on his own but he does like the company of people and other non-aggressive dogs, and he is pretty much indifferent to cats. CAS thinks he is about 12 years old, but he is a resilient little dog with a strong constitution and would love nothing better than to live out his days in a nice warm home. If you would like to meet Juno or any of the other animals under CAS’s care, or are looking to adopt or are willing to foster a pet please contact Kurt and Laura at 95 252 1426 or Fiona through the CAS website www.casnerja.webs.com , or Facebook page \casnerja. To find out more about helping CAS contact May via the CAS shop on 653 557 237.

Upcoming Events Fingers crossed, The Costa Animal Society (CAS) will begin to return to our pre- Covid activity shortly. (night or afternoon?), will be held at our wonderful benefactors Fitzgeralds located under Supersol on Calle Antonio Ferrandis Chaquete 2 in Nerja. Tickets are available from Fritzgeralds, 951 550 585, or contact Jane Howard on 0034 643515428. We hope to see you there! On Monday, June 21, a Bingo night is planned. Given the continual uncertainties which can change day-to-day like underpants, please check our Facebook page, or stop in or call our shop for confirmation so that, as the addled Americans say, “We’re good to go, Dude”. they were double that a couple of years back – and this is a real investment for the future as these trees will still be alive in 300 years time – everything else permitting!

New growers tend to be trail blazers and many are also growing them organically. According to a recent study, an area of 40,000 hectares of pistachios would be necessary to meet current European demand and demand is constantly growing. In Spain alone, we only produce 5% of internal consumption – the rest is all imported. So there's lots of scope for expansion.

Flowering takes place at the end of April into May, thus producing a later crop than almonds and the flowers are, therefore, rarely frosted. Like almonds, they are undemanding trees and, thus, cheap to produce. Insect plagues are, as yet, unreported. Commercially they can be mechanically cropped with a huge vibrating umbrella type machine which, on average, can strip 500 trees a day. The principal male variety is Peters and it will pollinate for a good two week period. At each side of this there is 02-16 which flowers a week earlier and 02-18 flowering a week later. The male flowers are more rounded in form and each flower will throw out pollen for 3 or 4 days. But flowers open in succession, those at the top of the tree being last to open. Thus it is important, in male trees, to prune for height, whereas the females you want lower. The best female variety is Kerman; Larnaca is another, earlier. The female flowers are carried in long 'fingers'; some 15 or 20 fruits will develop on each. The flowers are open for 3 or 4 day and receptive to fertilisation for only one day, but they open over a period of 2 weeks. So timing is all! MUSIC FESTIVAL TOURISM A study carried out by researchers from the University of Malaga (UMA) has revealed new perspectives on satisfaction and loyalty in music festival tourism, "based on the analysis of tangible and intangible attributes." Specifically, it has confirmed that the Torre del Mar geographical location and the celebration of the festival on the beach, in the western area of the promenade, is "a key piece" in the success of the Weekend Beach Festival, which was not held last year due to the pandemic its seventh edition and that in 2021 has not yet been officially suspended. Its environment is the main reason why visitors repeat, "Together with the festival program and the socialization and character of its people." This study has been presented this Wednesday by the Deputy Mayor of Torre del Mar and Councilor for Tourism, Jesús Pérez Atencia, together with the responsible research team. Tthe study provides "very interesting" data for the Tourism area, by demonstrating how the festival environment is decisive for visitors to return.: «For us it is important to be certain that the tourist, through festivals, also identifies a tourist destination and ends up returning to

CRUISE SHIPS IN MALAGA The Port of Malaga is beginning to see the first green shoots of recovery in the tourism sector. Towards the end of this summer the cruise ships will return; and not only that, but they will have a base port on the Costa del Sol - where cruises start and finish - according to the President of the Port Authority, Carlos Rubio. The first itineraries will be only national, for the most part along the Andalusian coast from Huelva to Almeria although it is also planned to extend them to other nearby areas which could include Ceuta, Melilla, Murcia and also Valencia. Esther Molina, manager of Suncruise Andalucía, highlighted that the region has 900 kilometres of coastline and a wide variety of ports certified to comply with all the health protocols required by the pandemic. A key element in making all of this possible is that cruise passengers will travel in ‘bubble’ groups, and will have been vaccinated or have produced negative PCR tests – as will the crews. This type of cruise has already been operating in the Canary Islands since 6 November, while waiting for the ban on international cruises to be lifted.

El INGENIO The El Ingenio Shopping Center, managed by MVGM and owned by Salsa Patrimonio, expands its commercial offer with the incorporation of the multinational MediaMarkt, a specialist in the sale of consumer electronics products and which has more than 100 stores in the national territory. This new establishment, located in the old Worten premises , will provide customers with a wide assortment of the best brands in products for the home, computing, urban mobility or gaming, as well as a wide variety of services and solutions.

With the opening of MediaMarkt, El Ingenio closes the first four months of the year with a multitude of reforms and extensions in such prominent establishments as Zara, Pull & Bear, Oysho, Springfield, Women Secret and Calzedonia. But these are not the only novelties of the Center in 2021, since very soon other El Ingenio establishments, such as Casa, will also reform their facilities. In addition, there will be new additions to restoration, such as La Taberna del Pintxo.

MALAGA AIRPORT GARDENS Malaga Airport is taking advantage of the reduction in traffic due to the travel restrictions and making improvements to its facilities. And one very striking change is the installation of vertical gardens in different parts of the building. The project consists of four large green screens which will create one of the biggest 'indoor parks' of this type in Andalucía, covering 400 square metres in total. One of the vertical gardens is in the main hall of Terminal 3 and is 200 square metres in size, explained Ignacio Benthem, the head of ACER Espacios Naturales, a company specialising in gardening which won the contract when it was put to tender by the airport operator Aena early last year.

NO SMOKING The Ministry of Health is finalising a draft proposal to prohibit smoking on the terraces of bars and restaurants, whatever the circumstance and regardless of whether or not there is a safety distance maintained.
