Editors Note... It’s Summer time! The kids have finished school and when work allows I cant wait to get to the beach and relax by the pool. I think I say it every July, I love Summer! There are definitely less tourists in the area than normal. So, please support businesses by spending money locally so the bars and restaurants we love and enjoy spending time in will still be around when things finally return to normal. Last month there was huge support for the little boy from Canillas de Albaida who suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a neuromuscular disease. The community came together for a Solidarity walk and many of you signed up for the 5k & 10k challenges. If you would like to make a donation the bank account number is ES70 3058 0719 8427 3215 2108. This month we would like to raise awareness for the “Saca la lengua a la ELA” charity which was created by Miguel Ángel Roldán, an ex-athlete from Cordoba who suffers from the illness. 25 triathletes have signed up for the Ironman Triathlon in Lanzarote on July 3rd to raise money and support the charity. Local expats Steve Twiselton (cyclemalaga.com) from Competa. Jansen Riley also from Competa and Chris Davies from Rincon de la Victoria are all competing and we would like to wish them all the best for the triathlon. Find out more on pages 28 & 29.

multiple injuries, including severe head trauma and damage to his internal organs, as well as several fractures to the limbs. Sources say that the man was partying with friends when he decided to jump into the swimming pool from the third-floor terrace - a practice known as 'balconing'. Sources said that the young man miscalculated the trajectory and fell on an umbrella in the pool area, and the emergency services were called. Paramedics spent more than 40 minutes stabilising the victim at the scene before he taken to the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella. He was then transferred to the Regional Hospital in Malaga because of his head injury and immediately admitted to an intensive care unit.

he price of energy in the daily market - the factor that weighs the most when determining whether the electricity bill goes up or down - has increased by 24.5% since the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez , arrived at the power in June 2018. According to data from the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE), the average cost of energy in the daily wholesale market - which distributors go to buy electricity was 58.46 euros per megawatt hour the month in which Sánchez assumed the position, while in the last 30 days it has risen to 72.78 euros per megawatt hour , a rise of 24.5%.

he Spanish job market is steadily recovering from the economic fallout of the coronavirus crisis, according to data presented by the Labor and Social Security ministries. These figures showed that the number of people registered as unemployed in Spain fell to 3,781,250 in May – a drop of 129,378 since April. This

is the largest monthly fall ever recorded in the statistical series, which dates back to 1996. The last time a similar drop was seen was in 2017. The historic fall in jobless numbers coincided with the end of the state of alarm on May 9, which saw coronavirus restrictions, such as nighttime curfews and a ban on interregional travel, lifted. This in turn boosted activity in sectors such as tourism and the hospitality industry. Spain is a long way from where it was in February, when unemployment numbers broke the four-million mark. This figure began to decline in April, and the fall was consolidated in May, as the Covid-19 vaccination campaign gathered speed and restrictions were eased.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS Buying Off Plan
T
he economy is finally recovering after suffering a decline due to COVID-19 and numerous construction cranes can be seen again along the Coast. There are many new developments being constructed and the people interested in these newly built properties have questions about how to safely buy a house off-plan. The process of buying a property off-plan is secure if the necessary checks are carried out beforehand to avoid the associated risks of paying money for a property before it has been built. This can be a daunting experience as you can only rely on the developer's floor plans, price lists, quality of materials, and other related property documents to make your decision.

PIPIRRANA Spanish Summer Salad Recipe
T
his Spanish salad known as Pipirrana in a Spanish cookbook. While not very known outside of Spain, it is a great example of the use of seasonal, local ingredients that everyone has at home during the summer months.
other ingredients such as olives and lettuce. It is based on 4 ingredients: tomatoes, peppers, onions and cucumber. It serves as a base to add seafood such as octopus or tuna or an accompaniment to fish. In some cases egg is added.
Generally, when we think of Spanish cuisine we think of tapas, gazpacho, paella and the meats, but there is a wealth of Mediterranean diet, vegetablerich dishes in certain regions of Spain. Yes, some regions particularly the Northern regions, have a diet rich in meat dishes, but the Southern areas are characterized by a Mediterranean style of eating.
This salad is recommended to be eaten with a spoon and to have some good, crusty bread (or I had rusks) to soak up the juices. You can also use it as a topping for bruschetta, or serve it as a type of “salsa” on top of chicken or along with pita chips. I also think it would work great as a topping for pasta. And it is ideal as a side salad if you are serving fish.
This particular salad has multiple variations depending on the region it is made, in some areas the tomatoes are peeled and soaked in olive oil and the salad is mashed becoming almost like a soup, in others they may add

Ingredients 2 large tomatoes 1 large cucumber 1 medium onion 1 large green pepper 2 cloves garlic minced A pinch of cumin ½ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoon red wine vinegar Instructions Chop the onion in small cubes and soak in water. Chop the tomatoes, cucumber and pepper and place in a bowl. Drain the onions and add them to the rest of the vegetables. Place the garlic in a mortar with a pinch of cumin and a pinch of salt and a few drops of olive oil until you have a paste. In another small bowl mix the rest of the olive oil, vinegar and salt, add the garlic paste and mix well. Add the dressing to the salad and mix well. Cover and refrigerate. Serve chilled with bread or rusks. The most important aspect for this salad is to have the freshest and most flavourful vegetables.

BLUCEE LOVE MALAGA PART 1
T
his month we take you to the capital of our province - Málaga’s story is a tale as old as time, or at least nearly 3,000 years. It is one of the oldest cities in the world (and there is proof the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times). Málaga has been an important settlement through many ages, starting with the Pheonicans, who gave the city the name Malaca, right through to the modern day. Málaga’s prime position as a trading post would have first drawn settlers, nowadays the port is a bustling hub not only for trade, ferries and cruise ships but also restaurants, shops, markets, festivals and museums. The area will also soon host Google’s cyber security centre, part of the
24 The Grapevine
tech company’s €530 million investment in Spain. A stone’s throw from the port is the city’s Cathedral, an impressive focal point of the historic centre, it was actually never finished as the original design included two towers (unfinished cathedrals are a bit of a trend in Andalucía). Building work started in 1528 near the site of where the city’s main mosque once stood, and was opened in 1782 and is know locally as “La Manquita” (the one armed lady) due to its missing tower. A visit to the old town is a trip through the ages. The Roman amphitheatre was only discovered in 1951 during renovation works to the Culture House building that had been
built over it in the 40s. The culture house was subsequently torn down in 1995 to fully reveal the amazing discovery below. These days there is a modern visitors centre that teaches about the excavation, and the theatre is returned to its original purpose in the summer with open-air performances taking place. Towering over the amphitheatre at the base of the Gibralfaro hill is the 11th century Moorish Alcazaba (citadel). The Moors “borrowed” stones and columns from the Roman theatre below to build it, as well as transporting materials from other sites. The military fortification is a beautiful place to pass a few hours and it’s well worth taking a tour to learn about its history. You will see the level of advanced civilisation that

the Moors brought with them, including “cooling systems” of running water. The Alcazaba was connected by a walled corridor to the Castle of Gibralforo above. The castle remains, used as a military base until 1925, give stunning views across the city and the sea. There is a cafe in the Alcazaba and the Parador hotel at the top of the hill, but we’d definitely recommend bringing water and comfortable shoes as it’s a lot of walking! Wandering the streets of Málaga is a delight, it’s such a comfortable city to move around and you’ll find yourself discovering something new every time. SACA LA LENGUA A LA ELA “Stick Out Your Tongue To Motor Neurone Disease”
I
RONMAN AGAINST ELA is a solidarity challenge in which a group of 25 triathletes originally signed up for the Ironman Triathlon in Lanzarote 2020 with the goal of increasing awareness of Motor Neurone Disease and the “Saca la lengua a ELA” charity. “Due to the Corona virus the 2020 Ironman race in Lanzarote was postponed until July 3rd 2021" The “Saca la lengua a la ELA” charity was created by Miguel Ángel Roldán, an ex-athlete from Cordoba who suffers from the illness. Miguel at 40 years of age has always been a sports lover and above all, has a passion for triathlon. He started Triathlon training in 2002 when he studied in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It was there where he began his journey into the world of triathlon and duathlon. Competing all over Andalucía and in large events in

Spain and Europe, such as Ironman Germany in 2011. In the Vitoria Triathlon 2015 Miguel achieved a PB of 9 hours & 53 minutes, a phenomenal achievement that would have ranked him one of the best in the country at that time. 3 years ago, Miguel received devastating news. He was diagnosed and was suffering with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) a progressive neurodegenerative disease. He was unable to continue working as a Physical Education teacher at the Urbano Palma school (Santaella) and this diagnosis would change his life. To cope with this disease, Miguel, with the help of his friends Rafael Santos and Luis Rubio, created the #sacalalenguaalaela campaign. A video was produced and distributed on social networks that invited every person who takes part in physical activity to make the gesture of
sticking out their tongue and challenging another person to move, exercise body and mind, and challenge the ELA. The project has been well supported by celebrities in the sports and media world and continues to raise awareness around the world about the importance of research and development to improve the quality of life of people suffering from this type of disease. Despite no longer being able to compete in triathlon, Miguel has not thrown in the towel, he continues to study. He is completing a personal training master’s as well as training a number of triathletes for the Ironman Lanzarote 2021 Challenge. The Challenge Ironman Lanzarote is a triathlon event which consists of a 3.8KM swim, a 180KM bike ride and a 42.2KM marathon – each

Sailing in a safe and secure bubble, there couldn't be a better time to take advantage of the great offers now available. This is a quick overview of the way we start to get back to the long languid days of fun, surf and sun aboard our favourite cruise ships. MSC Cruises will bring their brand new ship, the stunning MSC Virtuosa, to Málaga on 24 September for a short series of 9 night cruises before operating a short 5 nights Taster Cruise on 31 October (details on the page opposite). MSC will also start operating one week cruises from both Barcelona and Venice in August. The big boys, Costa, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and NCL, all sporting new ships, will be sailing from Barcelona for short 7 nights voyages starting at various times in August.

A TRIP ON THE METRO Josephine Drew Out And About
T
o follow on from last month’s trip into Malaga, in mid-May, I took my friend on another mystery tour to the Metro to see where it goes. I had never been on it and so it was a good excuse to see how easy it was to get to Carlos Haya Hospital (or not). I used to get a bus from Malaga straight to the Hospital, but since then the Metro has been opened and some bus stops in the centre have been relocated. The Metro: We got the bus from Competa at 9.45am and arrived at Malaga bus station about 11.20am, firstly, taking coffee and croissants at the café/bakers outside El Perchel Metro station, (outside the back exit of the bus station), it’s the best and cheapest deal in town. Then we got side-tracked by ‘Odd’, the dress shop next door, where I never fail to pick up a bargain, I got two and my friend one! Half an hour later and carrying two bags each, we continued our
38 The Grapevine
quest, going to Maria Zambrano station to get information about various museums from the Tourist Information, but no one seemed to know where it was, until on our third enquiry we were told it was closed now! No idea if permanently or not. Sidetracked again by a new ‘Cudeca’ situated next to the café’, we browsed and bought. It’s very smart with top quality goods, and in fact we thought it was a private boutique until looking at the Logo. By this time, we had wasted over an hour putting off the dreaded task of buying tickets because neither of us are happy with machines nor symbols. (It has been known that when I am in trousers, I go to the gents)! There is an entrance to the Metro just inside the back door of the railway station as well as the one over the road near the bus station. We read the three booklets that are on hand, together with a helpful map, and we were none the wiser. We stood, touched the screen, got
confused before realising there was a symbol with a Union Flag, and even then, it was no help. I guess the guys on the security cameras had a laugh! The place was virtually empty, and vast, and if anyone in authority had been nearer, I would have played the ‘old lady’ card, but it was not to be. Apparently, there is a help phone but, in my blind panic I never noticed it. After about five minutes going over the same menu with a symbol -1 always appearing, my friend touched the -1 and lo and behold, this changed to +1 and a price came up, 1.65e in total and we were on our way, but nowhere could we fathom out how to get a return! No Ida y Vuelta symbol, nada. I have since asked a savvy friend how she got on and she said she always buys two singles, because she could not see how to get returns! Made me feel marginally better. Another small gripe is that there didn’t seem to be any ’65 card’ concession but again I may be mistaken. This requires

another visit, on my own wearing my ‘sensible head’. The Journey: We took L1 red line, to Carranque, where everything was clean, the train nearly empty, and it had a good screen showing stations and announcements. It was only three stops in the end, (could have walked it in the time we fiddled with the machines), then up the escalator to the entrance with a road in front and one to the side. We were so busy chatting that we turned left and headed in the wrong direction for about fifteen minutes, thinking we were either lost, or someone had moved the Hospital! We asked a lady for directions and were pointed back to the Metro and saw that the Hospital was visible straight ahead with a huge green HOSPITAL sign on the roof. (Why not google a map, I hear you say, not my forte, I reply). Its about seven minutes away, but by this time it was about one thirty and we were losing the will to live, so had a wine and returned to the Metro to make fools of ourselves again. This time we thought that our original tickets may work as returns so we swiped them on the validation machine, poked them into the ticket machine, and bit the bullet and bought two more tickets for La Luz La Paz, L2 Blue line, in the hope of visiting La Termica, then Parque de la Oeste. The Metro is not large, but this line business makes it sound huge, its ten stops on L1 and six on L2, due to be enlarged, but not sure in my lifetime! La Termica: This is about 15 mins walk from the La Luz La Paz, (lost again, so didn’t go). The building is over 100 years old, originally built on the site of a Convent catering for the poor of Huelin, then in 1904 refurbished to a two-storey building, with gardens outside and in the three

internal courtyards, lofty ceilings, high windows and dormitories upstairs, it’s been a Convent again, a Sanitorium, a Hospital for the war wounded from the Moroccan war (before the Civil War) and after the Civil War an Orphanage, all overseen by a charity board. After the war, the male orphans were taught a trade, mainly in graphic arts so they could be employed by newspapers and leaflet distributors, of which there were apparently many, and the girls went into service. In 1987 it became a Civic Centre administers by the Diputacion de Malaga (Malaga Provincial Council) and in the early 2000s when on pensioners’ trips, we got a substantial buffet lunch including soft drinks and wine, in the huge refectory and afterwards sat in the central courtyard watching small children being escorted in for their mid-day meal. I was told these were the needy of the city. A couple of times our pensioners stayed in the dormitories on a week’s holiday, funded by the Diputation. It was refurbished in 2013 and is now a Cultural Centre and featured on the Netflix TV series, Warrior Nun! Pensioners Outings: These were, and hopefully will be still available to pensioners of all nationalities, when things get back to ‘normal’. It was back in the early 2000s that I found out that some of our locals had never been to Malaga or anywhere else much, and indeed some not even to Torre. Going back to the 1980s, before Tourism, there was not much money around (land, yes), the road was not good, neither was the bus, and very few owned cars (donkeys, yes)! Today’s pensioners have worked hard and now have a small pension to enjoy life for a bit, and they definitley enjoyed themselves; the bus was always full of fun and laughter,
occasional singing and once a Fandango at the comfort stop! I have seen places I would never have normally visited and if we were going to arrive back early, the driver would pull in a garage forecourt until it was time to arrive back at 8pm ensuring that we had a full day out. Back to Our Plan: This was to walk the 15mins from the station to La Termica and then onto the Parque de la Oeste, five minutes away which has statues made from household bits and pieces, lakes, picnic areas and plenty of waterbirds, it’s a lovely place and well worth a visit. Another day. Information: On this side of town there is, the Museo Automovilistico (cars and fashion, haute couture, and hats) Either take the metro to Princessa, from El Perchel, then an eight-minute walk, or from La Termica along a straight road. A walk from Malaga bus station is not far through Huelin either. The costumes on display are of the same vintage as each car, and there is a separate room for Haute Couture from Coco Chanel to present day, and all the clothes have a photo with either the designer, a model, or a celebrity wearing them. The Russian art gallery is next door and the whole complex is in an old tobacco factory. Conclusion: A successful, if baffling day, even though we missed seeing the park, however we did see how the Metro worked, and that was our primary reason for the trip, even if a little 'confused.com' by it all. More wine, food and shopping, then home on the 6.30pm bus, after a good day out. Loymerbus: I asked for timetable and was given the old one, so no change so far, if it does alter I will pop it on Facebook or Grapevine will.

The Propert y Feature The overall trend is that Spanish house prices are on the rise, despite disruption caused by the pandemic. In the last quarter of 2020, average house prices rose by 1.5% year-on-year. This increase has continued into 2021, with prices rising 4.4% YOY in May. As of May 2021, house prices are the highest they have ever been, prices are up by 3.1% in Malaga on the Costa del Sol. One reason for the Spanish property market remaining buoyant is the demand for properties with more space. Much like in the UK, many Spaniards are fed up with their small city apartments and are turning to larger properties with more outdoor space. Another reason why the coast has fared so well during the pandemic is that with the rise in remote working and the ability to theoretically “work from anywhere”, people are planning to spend more time at their second homes. And with the Costas being well served by low-cost airlines, many foreigners are preparing to buy and work remotely in the sunshine.

fleshy, water-storers. The word succulent stems from the Latin word sucus meaning juice or sap. There are about sixty different families of succulents and most people don´t realise that cacti are also succulents; the tendency is to think of them as something different with prickles! The largest succulent in the world is the mighty baobab tree. It pre-dates mankind and the splitting of the continents some 200 million years ago. A majestic survivor, it can reach 30m high with a vast
trunk circumference of up to 50m and this is where it stores water against drought and hard times, making each individual capable of living for 5000 years. Cacti are a sub-category within the succulent family. For a succulent to be considered a cactus, it must have areoles. These are small, round, cushionlike mounds of flesh where spines, hair, leaves or flowers grow from. This is the distinction; areoles are only present on cacti,

WATER PARK IN MIJAS The ' Aquamijas' water park inaugurates another summer on the Costa del Sol with its opening , which took place in June, under strict security measures against Covid-19. The park welcomes the new tourist season, where users can once again enjoy traditional attractions such as the ' Kamikaze', a “free fall” slide that is “the one that releases the most adrenaline”; in addition to "the labyrinths, the wave pool, the lazy lake, Adventure River, Rio Bravo, the Diver-dragon or the Jacuzzi". To this are added non-aquatic alternatives such as "virtual reality machines and go-karts. VACCINATION OF NATIONAL TOURISTS Andalucía is willing to vaccinate national tourists who holiday in the region this summer, the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has said. Madrid, the Valencia region, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Cantabria and Galicia have also said they are in favour of vaccinating people from other regions and even international tourists as a method of encouraging holidaymakers although they have asked the State for some kind of compensation. The Junta’s head, Juanma Moreno, said this week that the Andalusian regional
government is studying the possibility of vaccinating national tourists who spend their holidays in the area and that it is"willing" to do so although he recognised that it requires "a lot of effort" and a great deal of "special logistics". Regarding the Andalusians who are going to spend their summer outside the region, he reassured them that they will not forfeit their dose of a vaccine, if called, and will be able to postpone their appointment.
GUITAR FESTIVAL Vélez-Málaga hosts one more edition of the 'Ciudad de VélezMálaga International Guitar Festival' , which will once again have an audience after last year it was held behind closed doors and broadcast online due to the pandemic. The event will run from July 2 to 4, with free concerts that will be held from 9:30 p.m. in the Cloister of the San Francisco Convent as the stage. ASSISTED BATHING IN TORROX The City Council has acquired material so that people with reduced mobility can enjoy the beaches of the municipality between June 15 and September 15, through the specialist volunteer of Civil Protection. The Torrox City Council had already announced at
the end of last summer that it has, reinforced the assisted bathing program with the acquisition of new material.
MARO BEACHES The Maro beaches have become one of the most visited coastlines in the province. Bathers seek tranquility and trust that they are not overcrowded. However, the massive influx of people has made the Town Hall have to take action again on the matter, as happened last summer Thus, with a view to the start of this new summer season, which will once again be marked by the pandemic, the problem of parking and road traffic for residents and tourists of Maro has been analyzed. A special service made up of Local Police, Civil Protection and lifeguards will ensure security and control of capacity to avoid crowds when accessing the beachs. In addition, as reported by the Nerja Consistory in a statement, a temporary reorganization of road traffic will be studied, as well as the launch of a shuttle bus from the Plaza de la Iglesia de las Maravillas to the beach, the same as what occurs at ithe El Cañuelo beach over the summer.
