Getting to Know the Purpose Pusher Michelle Chavis Interview with La Sheera Lee

Michelle Chavis is an entrepreneur. She is an author. Her books and journals motivate her readers. She is also known for her ability to customize and design articles of clothing and accessories. However, if you ask Michelle what her purpose is, she will tell you it is to help see and birth their purpose. She is known as the purpose pusher. Let’s get to know the purpose pusher. LL: You are called the “Purpose Pusher.” What is the significance of the name? MC: I help push people, some unknowingly, toward their purpose and help them discover their passions. Some have called me a Life Coach. LL: How are you able to integrate your purpose and your passion? MC: Believe your passion is connected to your purpose, therefore me being passionate about the well being of others and seeing the greatness while also help them see that same greatness within themselves, brings me joy. LL: What has been your push to help others? MC: GOD has given me the gift of service. There is greatness in everyone. Sometimes, all people need to do is overcome their limits and keep moving towards their dreams is a little encouragement. I have naturally been able to recognize the potential in people therefore, helping to push them toward their goals. As long as we have a pulse , we have a purpose. LL:What does the term level up mean to you? MC: To go to a higher level and leave behind mediocre habits. LL How do you define success? MC: Success for me means having a balanced life. That begins with putting God first. LL: What are two key tips you want to leave with all new and upcoming entrepreneurs? MC: Entrepreneurship can be hard, demanding, with plenty of ups and downs. The most important thing is to remember your WHY . One of my foundational scriptures is , Trust in the LORD with all your heart & lean not unto your own understanding , in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6 Arise And Conquer #ThePurposePusher WWW.THEPURPOSEPUSHER..COM

Multi-Talented Artists Interview by The Heat Seekers Tru Stone music began its journey in 2002 in the Detroit area rap music scene. More than an idea Tru Stone became known for its realistic and driven lyrics, with songs like What You Haters Talk About, Bustin Out, and Shake It and Twerk. Tru Stone delivered hard hitting music that had young people bopping their heads and rapping along. In 2003, the need to produce quality music pushed young company to turn its basement into a real studio. Giving it the ability to control not only its content and production but also how their music would be distributed. Tru Stone was a true independent company leading the way for many of todays artists. Tru Stone took their image to the stage. Performing at Michigan State University’s NPHC Step Show, Summer Jams. Making appearances in 8 Mile the Movie, Bustin Out: Detroit’s Gone Wild Movie and the City Airport Car Show and various other venues. They have also been guests of the major radio personalities drive time shows: FM 98 WJLB’s the Bushman and 105.9 WDTJ’s Spud. All in all, the Tru Stone artists were making a name for themselves. Tru Stone like any true gem mine produced, in 2006, the newest stone in its musical crown, Emerald Nation Entertainment. The musical genius behind both Tru Stone and Emerald Nation ENT is and was Lamar Robinson. Lamar began his musical journey as a rapper. However, Lamar quickly realized that his talents leaned more toward recognizing opportunities and producing talent. He quickly established himself as the man to go to for talented and upcoming rappers. Emerald Nation ENT can produce and provide services to all artists and entertainers. Lamar is focused on the talent. His most recent efforts included the first online showcase called Emerald Nation First Online Showcase featuring Blast it or Pass It, one of his discoveries is upcoming artist Bobby Zeppelin currently trending with his hit song ‘On God’. Lamar has collaborated with well-known artists across varying music and entertainment platforms such as Boosie, Mario Winans, TK Kirkland, and Goody Mob. Lamar took a hiatus from the music industry to focus on family. However, he never left the game and has several well established artists in the underground music scene, such as Bagman, Carolina Kane, Polowe Hash, Mike Philly, and a slew of other artists, he cannot wait to introduce us to.

8

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Emerald Nation ENT has recently joined forces with Sony’s the Orchard to publish digital music. With this joint venture Lamar is looking to take his artists mainstream. So, look for a return of Blast it or Pass it as they seek to find more new and exciting artists. The musical future for Emerald Nation ENT is now about to shine like the Northern Star, guiding many new artists to their brightest future yet.

Something Sweet About Joy Interview by King Brooks

I have always been a romance junkie. I recently had the opportunity to chat with Joy Avery. I first came to know of Joy through her book In the Market For Love and I have continued to follow her work since then. So when I got the chance to interview her, I was overjoyed. Enjoy our Interview! King Brooks: Hi Joy, How are you? Joy Avery: Hi. I’m feeling favored and highly blessed. I hope the same for you. KB: Tell us about your new novel ‘Something So Sweet?’ JA: Absolutely. A small-town mayor confronts an old flame over the fate of a historic inn. Newcomer Quade Cannon is determined to sell the inn, while Mayor Lunden Pierce is determined to stop him by any means necessary. They travel on a fun journey filled with laughter and love. KB: Where did the idea for this story come from? JA: If you follow me on social media, you know I’m obsessed with glitter. My glitter dealer, as I call her, is a beekeeper. When I would visit her shop, there were always bees flying around. I was so fascinated by the tiny creatures that I wanted to write a story with bees. Honey Hill was born. KB: How long did it take for you to write ‘Something So Sweet?’ JA: It took me about three and a half months to write the first draft of Something So Sweet. KB: ‘Something So Sweet’ is the first book in the “Honey Hill series.” What can we expect from this series? JA: Sweeter Than Honey, the second book in the Honey Hill series, will be released in June of this year. We will get to meet Rylee Harris, Lunden’s best friend, and Canten Barnes. I hope to pen several additional books in this series. KB: What do you want readers to take away from ‘Something So Sweet?’ JA: I want readers to walk away from Something So Sweet believing in second chances and the redeeming power of love. KB: Who is Joy Avery as a person and as an author? JA: Outside of writing, I’m a wife, a mother, a crafter. I operate a small business where I sell my handcrafted items. You can find my shop at www.LadyLionessHandmades.etsy.com

As an author, I like taking readers on what I refer to as love journeys. In my stories there‘s emotion, laughter, and a lot of love. As my tagline says: Real Characters. Real Journeys. Real Good Love. KB: When did the writing bug hit you? JA: The writing bug hit when I was very young. I used to write stories in crayon and animate them with stick figures. I initially wanted to pen a children’s book, but read my first romance and fell in love with the genre. I’ve been penning love stories ever since. KB: What keeps you coming back for more? (i.e. writing, telling stories) JA: All the characters swimming around in my head keeps me coming back for more. Along with the readers, who show tremendous support for my writing. That support keeps me motivated. I value my readers. As long as they keep purchasing, I’ll keep writing. KB: What advice would you give to an aspiring author? JA: The one piece of advice I’d give to an aspiring author is to BELIEVE IN YOURSELF. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Sweeter Than Honey will be released in June 2022. It’s available for pre-order now. KB: Tell us about your crafting projects? JA: I love to craft. Romance in Colour Interview by Angela Anderson

Romance in Colour is a podcast of two friends, Tatianna Richardson and Dr. Yakini Etheridge, who both share a genuine love for all things romance. Authentic, fun, and upbeat; the Romance in Colour podcast hosts talk movies, books, and the xennial Black experience with commentary that will for sure have you wanting to hear more. Tatianna, a romance author and Yakini, a psychologist, both bring a remarkable experience to the listening audience of romance lovers everywhere. Jointly, they have created a podcast mastermind using the romance genre with a smooth entanglement with conversations of race, culture, and diversity inclusion. One cannot leave out the dynamic way in which they discuss the hottest news and topics in TV, media, books, music, and more, all while staying true to themselves and the Romance in Colour brand. The Heat Seekers Magazine had the opportunity to speak with one of the podcast hosts, Tatianna Richardson. Check out what she had to say about the one-of-a-kind Romance in Colour podcast. Angela Anderson: How did you get started in podcasting? Tatianna Richardson: Initially, Yakini and I started this together as a way to reconnect. It was also a place for us to fangirl over Hallmark and Lifetime projects, especially at Christmas. The two of us are addicted to holiday movies. Fast forward to now…our podcast has evolved into a place to hear about real inclusive love, books, movies, and authors who embody those ideals. AA: Why did you start the Romance in Colour podcast? TR: We felt like there wasn’t a space at the time for Black women to discuss all the things we liked in Romance. We also wanted to introduce the audience to some of our favorite movies, TV shows, and books. AA: What inspired the name of your podcast, Romance in Colour (with a U)? TR: Actually, we just wanted it to look refined, lol. There was also another website with a similar name; we wanted to set ourselves apart. So, there you have it, Romance in Colour, with a U.

18

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

AA: Besides the spelling of the name, what is unique about the Romance in Colour platform? TR: Well, we try and approach looking at romance via the lenses of two Black women in their 40s. We have both been divorced. I have since remarried, and Yakini’s now dating. Our moms definitely influence both of our perspectives. Though we have many similarities, our life experiences are different. Therefore, we have many different perspectives on things to bring to our listeners in our own creative way. Oh, in case you didn’t know, I am Tati (short for Tatianna), and she is Yaki (short for Yakini). Yaki is also a psychologist. She will often break down the science behind romance and relationships. Which I would say is interesting and unique in itself. AA: Tatianna, share with us some of the behind-the-scenes of creating one Romance in Colour podcast episode. TR: Now, this is where things get interesting. I’m in Atlanta and Yaki is in New York; therefore, it takes the help of technology to make this happen. We record via the Anchor platform. When we have author interviews, we pre-record those via conferencing apps. We are both busy moms with lives, so we try and work around our individual schedules. Therefore, we have a set day each week; usually, Tuesdays that we record. Then we edit the podcast the following day for a Friday release. It’s a process where we’ve managed to find our flow and make it work to bring our listeners great episodes. AA: What aspect of your podcast is the most fun for you? TR: We absolutely love author interviews. Getting to know how people write and why they write is pretty cool! Also, our big holiday episode where we talk about all the holiday projects coming out that feature BIPOC and diversity inclusion is a lot of fun too.

AA: What can a listener expect when tuning into a Romance in Colour podcast episode? TR: Each show is structured with a flow that works for us. We start the show with a recap of the previous week’s episode, followed by the hot topics in romance segment, where we talk about romance issues in pop culture. Then we have the topic or author interviews, followed by our watching romance (TV and film reviews), reading romance (book recommendations), and sometimes a listening romance (music) segment. The listener can expect a full show that is entertaining and fulfilling with a common theme of “romance”. AA: Tatianna, let’s switch gears. It is February, the month of LOVE, so let’s talk romance. What do you enjoy about the idea of romance? TR: For me, I would say that romance is the glue that holds a relationship together. It’s what draws you to a person. AA: What does romance look like for you? TR: What does romance look like for me? Romance isn’t always the grand gestures. Sometimes it’s the little things like random flowers or a personal foot massage. It’s the anticipation of fulfilling your partner and their needs. AA: It has been a pleasure speaking with you. Please share how listeners can tune in to the Romance in Colour podcast. TR: The Romance in Colour podcast is available on several podcast platforms, including Anchor, Spotify, Stitcher, Apple, and Google. Stay connected with Romance in Colour via the podcast and on social media. Podcast: www.anchor.fm/RomanceinColour Twitter: @RomanceNColour Instagram: @Romanceincolour

Fearlessly Pursuing Success Interview by Lissha Sadler of Hardcore Grind

Favorite Quote: Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire. Taisha Demay is the author of the award-winning series Love, Truth, and Consequences. Her upcoming release, “A Question of Marriage” will be Taisha’s 11th book. A native New Yorker, Taisha’s passion for good romance fuels her pen. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she is blogging. Lissha Sadler: A black woman who can write is powerful. What does that power mean to you? What made you want to write? Taisha Demay: Excellent question. It means that I can create stories and memorable characters that will resonate with the readers. LS: Describe your pen style in five words? What do you admire most about your pen? TD: Eclectic, passionate, tactful, compelling, unique. LS: Where does your creativity flow? How do you avoid burning out? TD: My creativity flows from my heart. I step back from whatever I’m working on and do something that doesn’t involve writing. LS: If you could change anything about the literary industry, what would it be? TD: The bias that’s shown towards authors of color. It’s like the industry refuses to take us seriously, recognizing us as a force in the industry, lumping us in the same pile as our Caucasian contemporaries. LS: You inspire so many people; how does that make you feel? TD: I’m honored that I can inspire someone. LS: What can readers expect from the book “A Question of Marriage”? What do you want readers to get from your story? TD They can expect a passionate and compelling story about a man who believes he has it all and has no room for love in his life. I want them to know that no man is an island, and there needs to be a good woman behind every good man.

21

LS: What has been the most challenging part of your journey? TD: Being taken seriously as an author. LS: Budding authors face many challenges that can be overwhelming and, at times, complex for them to handle. What advice would you give to encourage them? TD: I would tell them never to give up, never stop learning and believe in themselves no matter what. LS: Moving forward in your career, what can we expect from you next? TD: I have several projects going on right now—the Game of Smoke and Mirrors, Armed and Dangerously Lethal, and Shape of My Heart 2. The Mighty Clouds of Joy TRADITIONAL GOSPEL QUARTET

24 THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

The Temptations of Gospel Music Quartet Interview by Teresa B. Howell

I can remember as early as the age of 5 hearing about this awesome group. The Mighty Clouds of Joy were the talk of the town on the quartet scene and everyone wanted them to perform in their city. Growing up in Boston, Massachusetts, The Mighty Clouds of Joy would come often to local churches and concert venues to perform. The smooth sound delivered after every song took individuals to a higher place with God. Each and every time they touched their microphones, you would hear a holler or a hallelujah in the distance. They were suave and debonair for every performance hitting the stage with matching suites and shoes. The loud belch of melody that came out of their mouths made everyone lift their hands towards the ceiling. It was a sudden reaction to giving God the ultimate praise. In 2021, I was blessed to meet the next generation of the Mighty Clouds of Joy via podcast. I interviewed them on my show Amplified Exposure Live and I was honored when they wanted to also interview for The Heat Seekers Magazine. A few of the members that were present have over 20 years with the group and continue to carry on the legacy for the legendary founder Joe Ligon. The Heat Seekers: Please give a description of when the group started and the founding members vision for the group. The Mighty Clouds of Joy: The Group started in 1961by the founding member Joe Ligon. Joe worked as a short order cook at the racetrack after school. He didn’t want to continue doing such a hard laboring job. So he decided to partner with his high school friend Johnny Martin and created “Sensational Wonders” before becoming “The Mighty Clouds of Joy.” There were several members that came and went but the most memorable ones for the music industry fans were Ermit Franklin, Elmo Franklin, Leon Polk, Richard Wallace, and Jimmy Jones.

had a great character. He was indeed a Gospel Icon. He was very humble down to earth and always approachable. He believed what came from the heart will reach the hearts of many. He loved Singing Gospel Music from his soul and Aretha Franklin named him the voice of the 20th Century. His voice was indeed impeccable! Everyone loved Joe’s personality. He had an unusual but amazing gift to sing.

THS: Tell us about the founding member. He is considered a legend in the eyes of The Mighty Clouds of Joy fans. What was he like as far as character and beliefs concerning music? TMCOJ: Joe Ligon is considered one of the greatest lead singers from the quartet world. He was very humorous and

THS: Give a full description of the other members and how they became members of TMCOJ. TMCOJ: Ron Staples answers: Johnny Valentine, Tim Woodson & I were handpicked by Joe Ligon. I followed him around to all of his shows. I told him I could sing his style and he never forgot about me. Everyone else was pretty

THS: Who is the lead singer of the group currently? Give a synopsis of who he is and what he stands for. TMCOJ: Ron Staples is currently the lead singer of the group. Ron states: “I’m a Singer that practices what I sing about on & off stage it’s all about winning souls with me.”

much hired in once I started the next set of clouds. All the way from the band and two of my younger brothers Derrick & Dale Staples. Other members elaborate: Johnny Valentine came on as a drummer at 16 years old and eventually became a singer. Dwight Gordon, Michael Cook, Paul Beasley (went solo) and Johnny Martin were the familiar names in the 1980’s. In the 1990s era Michael McCowan came into the group and Joe Ligon handpicked Ron Staples from the Robinson Brothers. Joe trained Ron because he could emulate Joe’s sound and demeanor. Ron had a powerhouse voice just like Joe Ligon. Tim Woodson met Joe Ligon at the age of 14 years old and joined the group in 1999. We cannot forget other memorable names such as Eddie “Spanky” Alford (Guitar Player) and Johnny Martin.

THS: Who is the comedian of the group? TMCOJ: Ron Answers: Everyone has a sense of humor in the group so that’s hard to say. Others Elaborate: Tim Woodson THS: Who sings the loudest? TMCOJ: Ron answers: I’d have to say me because my voice reminds you a lot of Joe Ligon voice so I’ll say I’m the loudest. Others Elaborate: Ron has the powerhouse voice… definitely Ron. THS: Now that the industry has changed and gone to digital music, how does that effect the TMCOJ’s music? TMCOJ: Yes the industry has changed a great deal due to digital download. We have fans that go back to having us on vinyl albums, 45’s, 75”s, CD’s to digital download. But I just believe our Fan/supporters will continue to download and support our ministry too help keep it going. We have touched every generation of music thus far. THS: Are any of the original members still living? Please list their names and time span with the group. TMCOJ: All original members are deceased and resting with the Lord. Richard Wallace was the last original member and he passed away in 2020. THS: Can you name some of the places that the group has visited overseas? TMCOJ: Where have we not toured? Lets see, Tokyo, Europe, Africa, Brazil, Rio De Janeiro, Switzerland, Japan, Bahamas, England, Bermuda, Australia…Everywhere… the list goes on, THS: Tell us about the days of being Grammy Award Winners? TMCOJ: Ron Responds: All three Grammys were won before my time. But I was involved with the recording of “Live in Charleston SC” which was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 1979 Live & Direct won a Grammy for the best soul gospel performance. In 1980 we won a Grammy for “Changing Times” for best soul and gospel performance. In 1992, we won a Grammy for best traditional soul for the “Pray for me” album. The song “Mighty High” stayed top of the billboard as the #1 song and #22 on soul billboard along with #69 on top 100 which gave the group crossover success.

26

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

THS: Name the funniest blooper you have experienced being in the group? TMCOJ: We were all on stage and Bossman Joe Ligon was really into it. His belt popped making his pants fall down to his ankles. When we got in the dressing room we laughed awhile from that episode and Joe laughed right along with us. We had another incident where a group member, Richard Wallace got kicked of the plane for not listening to the flight attendants command. We had some good times and laughed a lot. THS: Tell us of a time that a fan did something out of the ordinary while performing? TMCOJ: Ron Responds: I can’t remember the city but a man felt the spirit and started pop locking & dropping. He went down to the ground and did a split then came back up and spined around. He was getting it! I wasn’t expecting to see all of that. He felt that song “Heavy Load” in his bones. THS: What is your take on gospel music today? TMCOJ: Ron Answered: I love Gospel Music, all of the contemporary, all of the worship songs, but it makes me feel bad because I feel there is a form of prejudice against traditional gospel music. Thank God for the mom-and-pop stations because mainstream stations don’t play Quartet Music anymore. Quartet started all of the traditional singing; it all came from Quartet singers. I’m praying it’ll all turn around again and bless all artist too get air play. There’s a story too every song as Joe Ligon stated in our song “Nearer too thee”. THS: What are the plans for the group in the future? TMCOJ: All responded: Too continue to record great Music and too help keep the legacy alive. We will continue to let God get the glory for all he’s doing in our ministry. THS: Please let your audience know how to contact the group for future shows. TMCOJ: You can reach us @ our booking agent Ricky Derae @305-318-2301 or email us at ronstaples03@gmail.com or follow us on Facebook @ The Next Edition Mighty Clouds of Joy.

THS: Would you like to say anything special to your fans? TMCOJ: We would like to say please continue to pray for us as we go forth spreading the good news, and we thank you for all your love and support down thru the years. God Bless you all. Who’s That Girl? Reader, Writer, Baking Loving Boss…Suzette D. Harrison Interview by Angela Anderson

Suzette D. Harrison is a west coast California native who has a long-time passion and enjoyment for books and reading. She grew up in a household where reading was a requirement, certainly not a request. She credits her mother and grandmother as being her first librarians. It is no surprise that her love for reading created the bridge to her becoming a writer. Her literary career dates back to her high school years, in which her poetry was published. However, she did not stop there. She later unleased her fiction writing journey bringing us her creative talent and skills with fulfilling page-turning novels. Although she writes in multiple genres, African American Historical Fiction holds a special place in her heart. The proof is indeed in the pudding. Her love for African American Historical Fiction is evident in her award-winning novel, “Taffy” and dual timeline release, The Girl at the Back of The Bus. Suzette D. Harrison is the poster child of great writing. From romance to historical fiction, she has a way of taking you on a journey with every word creating an unforgettable experience with each book. She has published over 8 novels, including her latest, The Dust Bowl Orphans, which releases February 2022. She is a multi-talented individual, who along with her writing, finds time to utilize her culinary degree in Pastry and Baking. She continues to cook up award-winning novels between batches of cupcakes and enjoy her family, who play a vital role in her life. Find out more about Suzette D. Harrison as she shares her journey with The Heat Seekers Magazine and spills a little tea about her new release, The Dust Bowl Orphans. Angela Anderson: When did you know that you wanted to become a writer? Suzette D. Harrison: I’ve written poetry since I was in kindergarten and throughout college and actually thought that becoming a published poet was my trajectory. But a life crisis in my late twenties changed that. At some point in that crisis, I re-read Dr. Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which changed everything. It brought freedom and release from what I’d been experiencing. I thought, “if this is the power of words and literature, then I want to do this and bring light

to others.” Although Dr. Angelou’s is autobiographical, reading that piece of her work switched my trajectory and focus from poetry to novels. AA: What do you enjoy about writing and creating stories? SDH: I love getting lost in my characters’ lives and being taken on journeys that aren’t mine. I love giving my characters free reign and seeing how they deal with situations. It’s rather like a voyeuristic experience that’s rewarding because I had a hand in it. AA: What genres do you write and what do you enjoy about those genres? SDH: I write historical, contemporary, romance, and children’s books. My favorite is historical because it sweeps me away to a time and place in which I didn’t live and utilizes a different skill set or part of my imagination. AA: How would you describe your writing style? SDH: A dear friend once described my style as unapologetically

AA: You have a new novel that releases this month, The Dust Bowl Orphans. What was the inspiration behind this story? SDH: The Dust Bowl Orphans is a dual timeline, multi-generational story of one family’s separation and quest to find each other. It features two heroines: Faith Wilson (1935) and Zoe Edwards (current day). The novel opens on the fiercest dust storm in U.S. history that swept through Oklahoma, and its impact on Faith. She and her baby sister are separated from family and must find their way back to them. It’s a harrowing journey filled with ups and downs. My impetus for writing comes from several places. Firstly, my family left Oklahoma and migrated further west around the same time that Faith’s family did. We’ve read novels like John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, and even seen pictures of the Dust Bowl era from which African Americans are woefully omitted--as if (for many of us) this wasn’t our experience. The Dust Bowl Orphans is my reinserting us into the narrative, as well as honoring my family’s migration. AA: If you could describe this book in three words, what would they be? SDH: Harrowing. Victorious. Fulfilling.

extravagant and lavish. That blew my mind! I like to take my time and build a character, a story without necessarily rushing towards a conclusion. I like infusing humor into my work, even in novels that may have a heavier, more serious tone. I love words and language. That definitely impacts my approach to my text and influences my style.

AA: What is next for Suzette D. Harrison? SDH: I’m currently working on my third dual timeline novel that will be released in September 2022. It surrounds the life of a young, enslaved woman who was the chattel property of a U.S. president. And hint: no, it’s not Sally Hemings. So, get ready.

AA: Are there any writing must-haves or quirky writing habits when you are in your flow? SDH: I love writing in the dark. No lights. Give me soft ambient or chakra music and a glass of ice water, and I’m good to go. AA: What is one thing most readers don’t know about you? SDH: I love readers and interacting with book clubs, but I’m a quiet introvert by nature. I would also add that most do not know that I have a degree in Pastry and Baking. AA: If you had to give one piece of advice to new authors, what would it be? SDH: I’d borrow from Nike and say just do it. Get out of your own way. Stop doubting yourself or the viability of your work and trust the process. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

AA: February is a month of African American History, romance, and love. A). Share with us your love of African American History and culture. B). Describe the perfect Valentine’s date? SDH: A). I remember enrolling in my first African American History course when I was a senior in high school. I was so excited only to be crushed when learning that the course would only be for the first semester because there wasn’t “enough content.” And let me add that (no offense, Mr. Smuthers--you know I love you.) the course was taught by our gym teacher. Lord, that school wasn’t ready. Anyhow, I’ve been in love with African American History since a teen and immersed myself in as many books by Black authors as I could. That love stayed with me so much that my B.A. degree is in Black Studies. SDH: B). I’m not a huge Valentine’s Day fan, so I can’t describe a perfect date. I’m more interested in how I love and am loved 365 days of the year, not just one. AA: How can people stay connected with you? SDH: My website is a great place to find out about my new releases, backlist, and other Suzette D. Harrison endeavors. They can start there and visit me on various social media platforms. Streaming Music is Here to Stay, Get Over It by DAViD SPENCER

your music. Do not penalize them for their preference on how they consume your content. Be grateful they still want to consume your works.

Best Buy notified music suppliers in that

they will stop selling CDs in their stores. Target put CD suppliers on notice that they will only pay for the CDs that have been sold, abandoning paying for them upfront. Apple Music executive and Beats creator Jim Lovine, hinted that paid downloads will be phased out on the iTunes platform. This is an attempt to shift users toward Apple Music’s online streaming service. Streaming has completely changed the way music is monetized. Consumers do not have to purchase individual tracks or albums. Membership gives them access to everything you release. Get over it. The Game has changed. Artist (especially the unsigned independent ones) need to change their approach and pay attention to the landscape if they want to be successful in this new world. As it stands one stream does not compare to one download in terms of revenue. That is not the consumers fault. Do not penalize consumers for something the industry has not worked out internally. Streaming is not the problem, you just want to be paid more per stream. Consumers just want to digest

Great music is still a requirement- that hasn’t changed. Now more than ever you cannot sacrifice quality. Your music is listened to beside everyone else, including the majors. Every detail must be intentional from the concept to the album cover. You must stand out. You must present your best work and leave a lasting impression. Your music is your business card. Great music leads to more paid appearances, increased sales after shows, and more shares. More shares mean more people will be exposed to your music. We sometimes forget real people are streaming. You never know who that person is or who they are connected to. Your next great opportunity may come from a person who streamed your music. Music can reach people in places you cannot. In the pursuit of quality, budget responsibly. Emptying your entire budget into the production of a record is not the smartest way. Great music is rarely stumbled upon. You will have to drive people to your music. Save some of your budget for marketing. In this digital age, there are many inexpensive ways to put your music in front of consumers. They may not purchase but if they like it, they will continue to listen. They will embrace your sound and follow you. They will become a fan. Fans are invaluable. Fans are people. They work for you. They share you with the people they are connected to. Connecting with people is good thing. Be your biggest fan. No one should talk about your music more than you do. Social Media is your greatest resource. Build your brand. Make them love you more than they love your music. The artist is the commodity.

They want to connect with you. Engage your fans. Give them exclusive content. Go live and perform for them. Create content around the music. Show rehearsals. Take them backstage and to the sound check. Invite them into the studio session. The process will help them appreciate the music more. More importantly, it gives them more reason to connect with you on your musical journey. Do not forget how it feels to be a fan. I remember taking a screen shot of an artists response to my comment. I posted it on my timeline for people to see. Use your social media platforms to influence the people you are connected to. Keep doing what works. When Best Buy first announced they would no longer carry physical CDs, I saw a lot of indie artist say they would abandon printing product. I say, if you can still move 1000 units at $10 per unit why would you stop doing that? That’s real revenue you can use to drive other aspects of your career. If your music was never in Best Buy, their decision doesn’t affect you. It hurts the bigger players who depended on that distribution channel. One of my biggest supporters is an elderly man that has a flip phone. He doesn’t download music. He has purchased every one of my physical CDs. I digitally released a Christmas Single and burned him a copy from my computer just so he could have it. I didn’t have to but I appreciate his support. If you are performing you need product after every show. If you don’t have product you are leaving money on the table. Diversify your products- sell posters, books, pencils, cups, bracelets, T-shirts, erasers, pens, magnets, calendars, etc. Keep physical CDs in the mix especially if you can move them. Embrace that the music industry has changed and is changing rapidly. I remember seeing commercials on TV about new

CD releases. Now major Artist tweet “I released my new album today, go get it!” I still have dreams of becoming a chart topping musical force (check out my musicshameless plug). What can we do differently to adjust to this new industry? Let’s start by getting over that our music is being streamed. Stand by Me Pat Simmons

A one more chapter kind of read with all the feelings of faith, family, love, and second chances. Stand by Me is the third and final installment to the Family is Forever series. Kym Knicely, the oldest sibling of the Knicely sisters, is focused on her career and earning her doctorial degree in education. She appears to have it all, but a part of her longs for marriage and a happily ever after. Although Kym would like to settle down and have a family of her own someday, there is not anyone high on the list of prospects to make it happen. That is until she meets Charles “Chaz” Banks through a happenstance meeting at the airport and flight back from her hometown of St. Louis. Intelligent, confident, and a gentleman beyond measure…Chaz seems to check off all the boxes, including being a selfless individual who could create a long-lasting forever. But, unlike Kym, Chaz has been married and divorced and already has a grandchild. From the first time Chaz saw Kym, he was engulfed with her presence and knew that he wanted to pursue her. However, he didn’t know that he would have to add temporary caregiving responsibilities for his four-year-old granddaughter in the mix. Clearly, these two are at different stages in their lives. They both have things that take precedent over their blooming relationship and are a high priority. Important decisions must be made when faced with life-changing moments, placing them at major crossroads and moments that create pause. Is their pursuit of love and what could be, worth fighting for? Despite the complexity of a new relationship, moving forward and pursuing their desire for joint happiness is what they both want. They both learn that their wants and desires don’t always come packaged the way they think they should. It is in these moments that they both find themselves relying on their faith, family, and trust of one another. But is it enough for a happy ever after? A common theme of family, love, and togetherness with a blend of unity combined with the angst emotions of caregiving responsibilities brings for a moving page-turner. Pat Simmons is an oracle of words in the written form as she paints the picture of the star-studded characters and chemistry that radiates off the pages. The characters’ raw emotions make deposits with a sure return of emotional investments. The realness of the characters and the shared love for family, romance, and battle with relatable issues illuminate the pages in a way that pulls at your heartstrings while rooting for Chaz and Kym. You will even get a laugh or two in as you enjoy this beautiful story of a second chance at love. Stand by Me and the other two books in this series, Lean on Me and Here for You, can all be found where books are sold and on the website of Pat Simmons at www.patsimmons.net.

Fred Padilla: Fred Padilla: Fred Padilla: Fred Padilla: Fred Padilla: Fred Padilla:

Actor on the Rise Interview by David R. Navarro

Fred Padilla is an American Actor known for his roles in the TV Series Killer Women, The Messengers, Longmire, Deputy, and Better Call Saul. He has also appeared in feature films such as Shot Caller, Sicario, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Blood Father, and War on Everyone. David R. Navarro: When did you first get involved in acting? Fred Padilla: I got involved in the film industry in 2013. I was approached by an assistant director that asked me if I had ever been on a TV show or movie, if not would I like to be in a movie he was doing. The film was “Force of Execution”. David R. Navarro: What or Who inspired you to pursue a career as an actor? Fred PadillaYou know, honestly, the people that are closest to me– My Team. Such as my Mom, Dad, Daughter, Manager, Publicist and my Agent. They are the ones that believe in me. I have also learned a lot from principal casting agencies as well as others actors on set. It never failed, when I felt like quitting, I would get emails or calls to audition. All these things keep me motivated to stay in the game. David R. Navarro: What films/tv shows have you been involved in? Which of them have been your favorite? Fred Padilla: Man, I have been on quite a bit of films and TV shows! “The Messengers”, “Killer Women”, “Longmire”, “Deputy”, “Briarpatch”, “Sicario”, “Blood Father”…. to name a few. My favorite role so far has been the first TV show I was involved in. It was the end of 2013, I landed a role as a Undercover DEA on “Killer Women”. That’s when I was discovered and I realized that I really enjoyed being an actor. I got along with the principal cast from the beginning and it all just felt right. David R. Navarro: I’m sure you have met many actors along the way. Can you share some stories with us? Fred Padilla: Yes I can, this story I can will never forget. I was working security for security company at Tingley Coliseum for a UFC fight in Albuquerque, NM. I was ringside, our crew had just been briefed by promoters/sponsors, letting us know who was allowed to be ringside. Because we were front and center…. So, I was taking care of the exits for the fighters and I was at my post, when I saw these three guys coming towards me. One of them I knew was one of the promoters, then I saw two other

bearded guys, one was a skinny guy that was behind the promoter. As they came to me, I was again briefed that if no-one had credentials or IDs no-one could get to ringside. So, the gentleman with the beard showed up, I pushed his chest and held him back. I looked at him and I’m telling him, “you can’t come in here, you have no ID, no credentials” The promoter had went in before him and passed me cuz I knew who he was, then he looks back and shook his head at me, like what are you doing? Then, as I was holding this bearded guy, I pushed him on his chest and I was looking right at him and I realized that it was Mel Gibson. He gave me his distinguished look, kind of like his “Brave Heart” look. Then, his manager looked at me, which was right behind him and asked me, “Do you know who this guy is?” I looked at my guests list and I said, “yes I do” and I apologized and said, “I didn’t realize at the time until I pushed you forward then I saw who you were”. Then, Mel Gibson told me, “don’t worry about it, your just doing your job”. So, I let him go through. I knew that he was directing and making a film here in Albuquerque called “Blood Father”. Two days after this, I ended up getting casted as an inmate on the movie he was directing. So, I go and get fitted with wardrobe and during this, I come across Mel Gibson, he keeps looking at me and telling me, “you look familiar”. So, then we met up for lunch, we were on set, he asked me to sit with him and his manager. After a while, we

David R. Navarro: Which ingredient do you think makes you special and unique as a performing artist in a genre overflowing with new faces and ideas? Fred Padilla: I think what makes me special in this industry is that I can easily change my appearance. I can look different for so many different roles. People tell me that I have a very unique look, which can make life a lot easier for casting directors. David R. Navarro: What has been your biggest challenge as an actor? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how? Fred Padilla: My biggest challenge is being close up on camera. I’m a big guy, so the more I’m seen on camera, the more it makes comfortable. So, I believe have overcome it.

Marc Blucas and Fred Padilla on set of the TV Series, Killer Women.

were talking and getting to know each other, he realized I was the security guard holding him back at the UFC fight. He’s a cool guy, we got along pretty good. David R. Navarro: What has been your favorite role, so far? Fred Padilla: My favorite roles are pretty much any type of agency. I believe I fit pretty well as a cop, military, FBI, DEA, Ice, Border Patrol. Pretty much, law enforcement. I really enjoy those roles. David R. Navarro: How has your acting evolved since you first became involved in the film industry? Fred Padilla: It has involved quite a bit of acting classes, I have gained more experience on set as well as networking and getting to know the people behind-the-scenes, the crew, assistant directors camera people, directors, everyone that’s behind the camera. I have just become a lot more comfortable on set. David R. Navarro: If you were forced to choose only one, which emotion, more than any other drives you to stay in this tough business? Is it joy, anger, desire, passion or pride and why? Fred Padilla: I strongly believe, it’s pretty much all the emotions, because when I get an email, my emotions start to race. When I’m onset, I am passionate, my pride just takes over, when I talk about it, it overcomes everything and the joy that it gives me is a pretty awesome feeling and then, I also experience the frustration of trying to wait patiently to see if I get picked or not. It an be rough, many actors say you have to have thick skin. So, pretty much all of the above keeps me going.

David R. Navarro: A common phrase in the industry is, “you must suffer for your art”. Do you agree with this statement? If so, how have you suffered for your art? Fred Padilla: In the beginning, when I first started acting it felt like I was suffering, audition after audition… but anymore, it doesn’t feel that way because I’m more patient now and I have an attitude like a wall. If it works out great, if it doesn’t, then there’s something else coming. Maybe even bigger. You got to try and stay positive. David R. Navarro: How do you feel the Internet has impacted the film business? Fred Padilla: The internet has helped a lot, especially with social media. Using it as a tool, everyone can see what you’ve done and how you look. It has provided great exposure for me to show my talents and skills. David R. Navarro: If you could give 3 tips of advise to an upcoming actor, what would it be? Fred Padilla: For an upcoming actor, I would have to say… 1. Get as much experience on camera as you can. 2. Take acting classes with reputable instructors. 3. Always be prepared for anything that can happen. David R. Navarro: How can fans-to-be gain access to you and follow your career? While traveling recently, I stopped by the town of Fayetteville Georgia to visit my stalker friend Tommy Boylen who has a favorite hangout spot. The reason he is called my stalker is because a few years ago he found me on Facebook and friended me. Because of his profile picture people didn’t believe he was Who he looked like and even thought he was a stalker or my ex! But if you know me, you know I’m up for a challenge. So I took a trip one day to meet this mystery senior citizen at this spot called Broadway Diner. He was exactly who he said he was and has become one of my favorite people. He hangs out there every day greeting people and now I know why he loves it. The food is so good and the people are friendly. And it’s become one of my favorite food places too when I get the chance to visit. The owners, Pam and Steve Theodorakis opened this place many years ago and it is literally the BEST food! The atmosphere is superb with great servers and with my recent choice I had the Shrimp Sophia that consists of sautéed shrimp, sun dried tomato, fresh broccoli and fresh basil tossed in feta cheese cream sauce over penne pasta. Steve made sure to tell me the secret is in the sauce and to remember it’s a secret. It was so good to chat with Pam and Steve again but even more so to spend some good quality time with my #1 supporter Thomas W. Boylen over lunch. Tommy, who is 93 years young, found me on facebook a few years ago when I came to interview Steve. He follows me on social media and calls me regularly and has proven to be a true friend. So, if you are ever traveling through Fayetteville, stop by this diner and look for Tommy boy. He’s usually dressed up in his cowboy hat and bandanna. Broadway dinner is located at 535 Glynn Street Suite 1009 in Fayetteville Georgia. The hours of operation are from 8am to 9pm. I promise you won’t leave disappointed.
