Professional Saxophonist Interview by David R. Navarro

Sarah Mount’s sax has found its way into more bands than you can shake a reed at. She’s known across the entire music scene for her tireless work ethic and ability to play any style and at any position in the lineup - whether that’s pure ensemble work, like she does with the Mannequin the Band or the Denver Jazz Orchestra; or fronting a powerhouse group like her own Sarah Mount and the Rushmores. The Denver-bred saxophonist is a consummate artist who also paints and teaches music and art, and is one of the founders of the Colorado Musicians Union demonstrating her deep commitment to not only performing at a high level, but advocating for other artists and musicians every day. The Heat Seekers: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Sarah Mount: The short version is I’m a visual artist doubling as a professional sax player who also dabbles in singing, influencing, music education, and modeling. And who also really cares about social justice while living in Denver, Colorado. THS: What made you decide to be serious about the music industry? SM: The music industry decided to be serious about me well before I became serious about it. My career actually started in a community band about eleven years ago, and I never expected it to become worth anything. I was just looking to play for fun, but then I started getting calls for gigs, and the rest is history. THS: Which people or books have had the most influence on your career and why? SM: My most influential people are my bandmates, and fellow local musicians. Playing with others who are better than you is incredibly powerful, and will lead you in the right direction. While it’s mostly interactions that shape me, I do need to mention one book that was life changing. Strange Fruit: Billie Holiday and the Biography of a song. Learning the inner workings of this incredible singer, and what she had to face in her lifetime is extraordinary. In my opinion, one of the most raw talented, and courageous person to ever exist.

8

well. It was humiliating, and I cried a lot over this, but I learned to self-soothe. Things don’t go as planned especially in music, and I learned a lesson in bouncing back at an early age. successful thing you see there are probably even more moments of rejection. THS: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? SM: The best advice is to just be accepting of rejection. For every

THS: In your opinion, what would you say is the #1 key to success? SM: Being resilient, and humble will get you far in this field. It’s all about not taking anything personally, and making sure your ego is in check.

THS: What does a typical day in your week look like? SM: Usually I start my day heading to one of the four middle or high schools in the area to teach sax sectionals through a music outreach program, teaching private lessons, or working on a commission painting. Evenings are typically filled with rehearsals, gigs, or teaching a paint and sip class.

THS: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? SM: To be quite honest, I can’t think of much in my career, but when I was in middle school I totally bombed a solo I had in a Star Wars medley. I had worked super hard on it, and in practice had it down

THS: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? SM: The passion, and joy of being a musician. I get to do, be, think about, and learn about what I love. Any industry can have its challenges, and music certainly isn’t stranger to some issues. If I ever need a raw reminder I just pick up my sax, and play a bit.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

THS: Tell us about working with your significant other. Can you share any advice for other music couples? SM: I have found this to be an incredibly rewarding experience with my significant other Daniel Steigleder. We are both sax players, so it’s really fun to talk shop all the time together. The support, intimacy, and love definitely translates outside of the personal relationship, and enhances the professional one quite a bit. We complement each other a lot, and this expands our love so much to work together. The best advice I can give other partners working together is to understand that what ever strengths or weaknesses within the romantic relationship will likely be amplified in the professional one as well. THS: What is a non-music related thing or experience that has helped you as a musician? SM: I spent my 20’s in the middle of the Rocky Mountains in the Created Butte area snowboarding everyday in the winter, and doing whitewater sports in the summer. A decade doing extreme sports will really teach you how to be ferociously brave, and this really translates well to stage time. THS: What projects are you currently working on? (That you can talk about). SM: My ongoing projects are always exactly that, but I’m super excited about a few influencer campaigns I have coming up with a mouthpiece company, and fragrance one as well. My band Sarah Mount and the Rushmores will be back in the studio again soon as well, and I’m always excited to release new music.

Alan Westman @artbyalanwestman

THS: What’s your all time favorite album and musician? SM: I find this question impossible to answer because it’s constantly changing as I evolve, but at the moment I am very much fixated on Moonchild. THS: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? SM: I can speak German! (Well, I’m learning fast at least). THS: Where can new fans follow your career? SM: I’m very active on social media, and keep it up to date. The Woman King Fact of Fiction

If you haven’t watched “The Woman King,” I highly suggest you go view it. I am not sure if it is still in theaters, but I am sure it is streaming somewhere. The movie tells the story of the Agojie, an elite, all-woman army in the West African Kingdom of Dahomey. That is all I will give you because this is not a review, and I will not give away any spoilers. Breathe; you can keep reading. I came across articles and bold commentators online that were bothered that some of the details in the movie were not historically accurate. I want to share this overlooked fact with them: the movie is fictional. Yes, it’s based on some actual events, but the film was written for entertainment. It celebrates strong black women and all the beautiful complexities surrounding the privilege and honor that they carry. The Woman King is not a documentary. You must be careful with those because most of them also have an agenda. You can’t tell me Prince Harry and Meghan Markle docuseries aren’t political or, at the very least, socially motivated to sway public opinion. I haven’t watched it yet, but I know how these things work. We all do. That’s why it’s laughable that anyone would expect the writers and producers not to take liberties in creating this masterful piece of art. Before this movie, I knew nothing about Dahomey. If anything, this sparked my interest to learn more about the kingdoms in Africa before the slave ships arrived. I am always screaming our history did not start with our arrival to the lands that Columbus supposedly discovered. Where are these people when that holiday comes around? And this is the point; the victor has controlled the narrative in history books long before this movie. As soon as you enter grade school, you get a version of history that is not quite right. For all the acclaimed history buffs and professionals who were bothered by this movie, why aren’t you bothered by the inaccuracies in the history books? There are some unbecoming attributes of the Dahomey Kingdom but show me one great nation or kingdom that doesn’t have moments they want to forget. Dark moments they don’t want the world to remember. Some American politicians don’t want schools to teach about slavery. Slavery was brutal, and its effects are still felt today. Point your outrage there. If you historians aren’t trying to correct the history books, shut your mouths and let us enjoy this movie. It’s giving me melanin-magic vibes. My black is beautiful vibes, and dare I say it- I even got Wakanda Forever vibes. The Woman King, fact or fiction, it’s a great watch.

Chloe Flower notes of the song, “With ‘Golden Hour,’ I wanted to create space for listeners to be in the moment and simply feel. When I was composing the piece, I was thinking about the emotion of a great movie soundtrack, and I wanted to tell a story to connect me with my audience. I always have in the back of my mind Schoenberg’s suggestion ‘If it is art, it is not for all, and if it is for all, it is not art.’ and every time I perform, I try to chip away at this outdated idea, break barriers, and hopefully reach a new audience and bring people together. For me, music is a connection between our souls and the universe, and it is an honor and a privilege to share my music with you.”

with Kisha Green DATING AND THE SINGLE MOM After the ink dried on that divorce decree, I often fantasized about going to different nightclubs to drop it like it was hot. Chocolate and caramel men would send over tequila shots with the hopes of wanting to get to know them better while dancing the night away with the selected handsome stranger. We would fall in love, ride off into the sunset, and live happily ever after. Well, that was a fairytale because the cellular phone was drier after the ink dried. As if that rude reality check was not enough, my lady parts were starting to feel the remnants of the drought, and no matter how many times Rosie came out to play, it was not enough. While sitting in the Starbucks drive-thru most mornings, I often wondered if this could be life. After six long and dessert-like months, loneliness was setting in. And was trying to get comfortable, and it was time to make some changes, and I decided to join a dating app with plenty of fish. A kid-free weekend with multiple bottles of wine, new selfies, and a dating app sounded like a female trying to get my groove back- that would not require me to leave the country and return married. Well, that idea was a bigger joke than me thinking that a waist trainer advertised on TikTok would make my pandemic weight gain look invisible. Immediately upon completing the registration process, instant messages were coming from Thomas, Richard, and Harold, but we could not forget ManMan, Charlie, and Hakeem, which slipped through the cracks. The profile stated that this dot com diva was dating with a purpose: to be matched with qualified men and at least meet the height requirement. As a 5’10 female, Mr. Right or Right Now needed to be at least six feet. The app must not have understood because there was an influx of homeless and jobless men under 5’8. Not trying to sound shallow, but damn, our pictures would look funny, especially since heels were a girl’s best friend. I was convinced that God had a sense of humor when the latest prospect that the app suggested a Reverend with a foot fetish who lived with his mom, no car in school to get his GED. He was very handsome, and quite the charmer as his messages always read like poetry, but he was 58, talking about shopping his Gospel Rap CD to record labels. Currently still wondering why that was considered an ideal match. Fully aware that the love story currently being written would not end there, but after about eight failed dates, it was hard to view the glass as half full anymore; please stay tuned; it will get better.(I hope)!

Sober Awkward Podcast - Has Drinking Culture had its day? Australia-based Sober Influencer Victoria Vanstone has been logging her sobriety journey on her website www.drunkmummysobermummy.com for over three years and her new Podcast ‘Sober Awkward’ is fast becoming a tool for those stepping into an alcohol-free lifestyle. Both platforms offer a quirky insight into parenting sober and everything sober curious. Her brutally honest way of delivering her message mean her audience get the full story behind recovery. Her hilarious way of writing is inspiring others to try a new way of ‘mumming’ and living an alcohol-free life in this booze drenched world. Victoria believes that people are becoming more aware that binge drinking is affecting anxiety and mental health globally. Her blog urges readers to seek help for mid-range drinking problems and her message is that, surprisingly, being sober is not boring at all… It’s a better and more authentic way of living. ‘I think the world is starting to recognize that binge drinking, and any sort of over-drinking is having massive impact, not just on the individual but families and communities. We’re beginning to recognize a place between the pub and an AA meeting where some are falling through the cracks and even though they’re suffering are not getting the help they need. After I had kids, I started to use alcohol to escape the mundanity of motherhood, but hangovers with a baby crying in the next room made me feel awful guilt and shame, but because I wasn’t passed out in the gutter (too often) I didn’t reach out for help. I carried on binge drinking and missed out on getting professional support because my problem didn’t seem bad enough. My drinking was clever, never alone and never before 6pm so I looked like I was just drinking like everyone else around me, so it got diluted, absorbed into the crowd and was missed for far too long.’ Victoria believes a lot of people get stuck in a place where they know their drinking is out of control, yet they don’t feel it’s severe enough to deserve intervention.

Victoria ended up getting therapy to find out why she couldn’t control her drinking and now, after being sober for three years, she has teamed up with her newly sober friend Lucy Good, the

founder of the single mum network www.beanstalmums.com.au to record a podcast all about their personal journeys to sobriety. We called the podcast ‘Sober Awkward’ because that’s how Vic and I feel a lot of the time. Learning how to be sober socially is really hard and there are some extremely awkward interactions that you have to navigate. Things like going to a bar for the first time, telling people that you’re choosing sobriety and even sober dating. Doing anything you used to do drunk, sober, can be very confronting which is why the motto of our podcast is - ‘Feel the awkward and do it anyway!’ We want our listeners to know that we find those things awkward too and it’s all part of this zig zaggy road to sobriety’ Says Lucy. These two ex- binge drinking party girls bring humor and honesty to the sober scene. They both have a passion for helping people whose drinking is having negative repercussions on their lives and hope their insightful chats about being awkward will help others seek support. ‘Our podcast is aimed at anyone questioning their drinking habits, we want to reach people and let them know we’ve been there. We’ve both experienced shame and anxiety because of alcohol and we hope our positive and sometimes thought-provoking conversations, reach people that feel ready to make some changes in their lives. We are both proof that there is life after alcohol and it’s not as awful and boring as some might think. I think Lucy and I would both agree that becoming sober in our 40’s was the best choice we ever made.’

So, things are changing. There are sober bars popping up in cities all over the world and people are starting to realize that getting so hammered they can’t walk most weekends might not be as fun as they used to think, especially when it’s making us so mentally unwell. So perhaps trying a new way of socializing might soak up all this mental anguish and being the imperfectly, perfect version of you just might be enough?

Have a listen to their podcast on iTunes or Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts. Sometimes just knowing that there are others out there feeling like you is enough to step out of a bad habit and into a new way of life.

‘Just being you, without booze, is awkward, but those first interactions do get easier.’ Says Victoria, ‘I look forward to sober socializing now. I know I’m going to have fun, have real authentic conversations, no hangover and remember the whole entire night! It’s brilliant, I might even do some sober dancing occasionally, I’ve still got a few swan dives in me yet!’

Vic and Lucy’s podcast address’s a place that has been missed, a type of ‘socially acceptable alcoholism.’ A common sort of drinking habit that is cheered on from the sidelines and feels so ingrained in us and in society, that imagining another way is unfathomable. But, as they have discovered, sobriety, with all its awkwardness, is so much better than drunk.

They are in the second series of Sober Awkward and it is not in the top 200 Society and Culture Podcasts on iTunes. So, if you have ever woken up with anxiety or alcohol is affecting your life in a negative way…. this might be the time to get sober and feel the awkward and do it anyway!

Happy New Year from your boy, Tarius Knight! Let’s roll into 2023 with intention and purpose and see where we’ll be by this time next year – I have a manifestation and growth challenge for you – embrace and live #indieimpact #2023yearofmaifestation! Let’s go! If you’re familiar with my YouTube show, Rhythm and Views Show, you’re already part of the RnVFam and know we feature independent artists and highlight the importance of buying local and supporting small business (and, of course, buying music from independent artists, too)! How can you be part of the Indie Impact in a positive way? If you can switch just one of your daily, weekly, monthly purchases to local from a chain, by this time next year, you’ll have made a huge difference in your local economy and could even feel better about yourself personally (it’s like paying it forward… to yourself!). A few suggestions? Local coffee shop over a chain, local restaurants over franchises and chains, mom-n-pop shop and gift shops, and follow local businesses on Facebook and other social media outlets and see what’s going on around town – and explore and share independent music – you never know what you’ll discover! So, nuts and bolts, why buy local, shop small? If you’ve ever had to hustle, you already know! But if you haven’t, here’s the scoop: according to SustainableConnections.org, “Small-scale, locally owned businesses create communities that are more prosperous, connected, and generally better-off across a wide range of metrics.” What’s that mean? In terms of dollars alone, according to the Institute for Local Self-Reliance: let’s say store A (large corporation/chain) and store B (mom-n-pop shop) each collect $1 million in annual sales – the difference in the money recycled back into the community by each is huge: business A (large) $170,000 and business B (small) $450,000! And, for restaurants, the difference is even bigger! Local diners recycle back $650,000 versus chains at only $300,000. Our communities spend $1 million dollars, and the payback difference back into our community is mind-blowing. More than 2 ½ times more jobs are created when we buy local – if a mere 10% of purchases switch from large to independent, that alone would produce an additional 31,000 local jobs (and over $900 million in local wages)! Tell me where your dollars go doesn’t matter – you can see it really does! And those facts don’t even touch on independent businesses’ significance in balancing inequality, decreasing poverty, improving social and civic well-being, reducing public subsidies for large corporations, generating more tax revenue for cities, and even more money in your pocket directly (studies show that chains are not the bargain they present themselves to be, and local retailers easily match or even beat chain prices – the little guys actually need us and are happy to see us when we shop them, big box chains

literally don’t care). When we choose independent, locally owned businesses, over national chains, so much more of each dollar spent stays in our local economy – when we make purchases from our friends’ and family’s businesses – we have less impact on the environment, our money spent here stays here, and that, my friends, ultimately reinforces the foundation of our entire community. Now apply that knowledge to Independent Artists. Independent Artists contribute to our local prosperity because we: • spend our incomes locally (purchasing supplies, equipment, promotional materials, advertising, publishing, recording, performance wear, etc.), • benefit our mental and physical health (according to NNIH.gov, “research studies of music-based interventions do not show any negative effects” – except for possible hearing damage from being played too loud or pain from playing heavy instruments for years – music can be “helpful for anxiety, depressive symptoms, and pain associated with a variety of health conditions, as well as for some other symptoms associated with dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and other conditions” – the benefits of music are far reaching), • catalyze innovation (inspiring other to explore their creativity and see they can work as an artist),

• as well as enhance our community vitality and enrichment (how many community events have you attended that featured musical performances, which, you now see involve considerable spending that is recycled back within the local community). Your Indie Impact has even greater reach when you purchase our merch, stream our music, share with your friends and family why you love X-artist/music, subscribe to independent artist YouTube channels (and shows like mine) and follow and comment on social media posts; everything you do IS the Indie Impact! YOU actually matter to us! Cheers to your #indieimpact and to embracing the #2023yearofmanifestation and seeing what a difference you can make with simple changes! Come back for more next issue – we’ll catch you on the B side!

Exclusive Interview with

CASE THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Singer-Songwriter + Music Producer + Actor Interview by The Heat Seekers

“I want to make sure that my music always has soul, always has substance, and…” Case pauses, before finishing his thought. “…that in 20 years, people still want to listen to it.” - Case Rhythm-and-blues and soul artist Case has earned platinum sales for his songs that discuss the various conditions of romantic and parental love. He has written and recorded songs that explore his love for his own children, infidelity, relationships that ended bitterly, and relationships that never began due to the cowardice, poor communication, or insecurity between men and women. His recorded output represents a progression from a more street-based, urban hip-hop style typically associated with the Def Jam label, to a smoother, more soul- and R&B-styled music. Case has admitted that he aspires to recreate the sound of such traditional R&B and soul performers as Stevie Wonder and the Gap Band. The soul-based sounds of Case’s later recordings inspired Def Jam to create the Def Soul subsidiary. Born Case Woodard, Case was raised in several areas of New York City and New York state, including Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Mount Vernon. He was living in the Bronx when he was 17 years old, in a family that he has described as being very strict. His father was a one-time aspiring singer, and Case was the eldest of three siblings that included his two younger sisters. By the time he was five years old, he was entertaining his family and friends with concerts he performed in the family living room. His aspirations to become a professional singer were discouraged by his family, particularly his mother, and the tension between the two caused him to leave home as a teenager.

The Heat Seekers: You are truly the heart of R & B, tell us how did you start your journey. CASE: I started out doing talent shows, referencing songs for AL B Sure as well as writing for other Artist. The Heat Seekers: During the time of being discovered, did you know this would be a career? Why or why not? CASE: Yes, this was always what I wanted to do. There was nothing else, besides playing baseball that I was interested in.

32

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

The Heat Seekers: Give us details on they day you heard yourself on the radio. What were you doing at that moment? CASE: I was driving around in the city and just so happened to cut the radio on and it was playing.and written by the late Gerald LeVert and his cousin Mark Gordon. We were all at Rodney’s mother’s house when we first heard the record on the radio. It was mind blowing. A feeling I would never forget. The Heat Seekers: Are you love songs inspired by personal experiences? CASE: Not really, they are mixture of my experiences, people I know or stories I’ve heard or witnessed. The Heat Seekers: I can only imagine that you were probably a child that sang all throughout the house or possibly in a church setting. Tell us about your musical background? CASE: My father sang, he was in the group Cameo before they blew. I didn’t have any formal training. I could just

sing before I can talk. But I sing even when Im not even thinking about it. There’s always a song in my head. The Heat Seekers: I love the song Happily Ever After and will definitely want it sung at my wedding one day. Who wrote it and how was it inspired. CASE: It was written by Chris Henderson and Myself. The Heat Seekers: Now that the industry has changed and gone to digital music. What impact does that have on a Solo Artist? CASE: Im a touring Artist so it hasn’t affected as much as others. Record sales wise, independent Artist fighting for radio real estate is harder but I can touch the people easier. That’s a gift and a curse. The Heat Seekers: Tell us about some of the places you’ve traveled during your career and what was your favorite place? CASE: Germany has the best Chinese Food but Australia is my favorite place. The Heat Seekers: There is never a dull moment on stage. Tell us about a memorable time that made you laugh concerning a fan? CASE: There was a time 2 girls started fighting while I was singing, each claiming I was singing to them. I didn’t know either of them.

The Heat Seekers: In what part of the world do you recognize your greatest fanbase? CASE: New York, Detroit, Japan, Washington, DC and Philly are my biggest Markets. Even at my height of my career Detroit was my biggest market. The Heat Seekers: Can you name 3 influential people that had an effect on your career? CASE: Russell Simmons, Misa Hilton and Jojo Brim. The Heat Seekers: In the mist of Covid 19 when most singers had major down time, did you record or write at all? CASE: I didn’t slow down during Covid. I did start on my upcoming album. Dont have a name yet but I worked all through Covid. The Heat Seekers: What is your take on music today? CASE: I think there is great music out, but you have to look for it. It’s like people are dropping new music everyday, there’s NO WAY you can make GOOD music everyday. Where’s the Love, Where’s the Soul? On the otherhand, there are those that are putting out Amazing music; you just have to dig through the bullshit to find it but it’s out there. The Heat Seekers: What are the plans for the future? CASE: I’m going to continue touring, I’m getting into Acting. I have a couple movies out now and plan on doing more. I have

the Case 25 Documentary and performance I shot during Covid that I plan on releasing next year with my new album. The Heat Seekers: Is there anyone in the industry that you would love to work with in the future? CASE: I’ve pretty much worked with everyone I’ve ever wanted to work with but if I had to pick, El Debarge, Ty Dolla $ign, Jazmine Sullivan. The Heat Seekers: Younger generations are not taking the time to learn the business side of the music industry. What is your take on that? CASE: They don’t feel they need to. I dont really have a take on it. Those that don’t learn from history are doom to repeat it. The Heat Seekers: If you could do it all over again, would you change anything? CASE: Everything that happened in the past had bought me here. One thing though, I wouldve stayed with Def Jam. They weren’t hoping to let me go and I should’ve stuck it out. The Heat Seekers: Please let your audience know how to contact the group for future shows. Strike A Pose: Lights Camera And Action Interview by Lissha Sadler // Hardcore Grind

“If anyone says you’ve changed, tell ’em, Thank you, you think I work this hard to stay the same?”~ Rico King Rico King has walked the runway for designers like Ean Williams for Corjor International Couture and designers from Ukraine and Nigeria for D.C. Fashion Week. Rico has walked the runway for designers like Ean Williams for Corjor International Couture and designers from Ukraine and Nigeria for D.C. Fashion Week. His other runway shows include designers like Steven Wall for Nevetes Couture and designer Adrianna Marie for her Frequency line, as well as a spread in the August 2013 issue of NYC Fashion Ave. Rico has also modeled for designer Darius Gibbs “Dark Clothing line.” As an actor Rico has been featured on network T.V. shows like Deadly Affairs hosted by Susan Lucci for the Discovery I.D channel, The Carrie Diaries, Law and Order SVU (NBC network), “Unfaithful” on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network “Deceived” on TVONE network, “Brain games” on Nat Geo Channel and the list goes on. Rico has done promo spots for The Jimmy Kimmel show, a Charter Cable company commercial, & VH1 Big Morning Buzz Live. As well as various commercials and ads. Lissha Sadler: What made you go into modeling? Tell me how your journey started. Rico King: Great question. After I finished a record deal with an independent label I was signed to as a music artist, I pursued modeling. My best friend, Major Dodge, whom I’ve known since kindergarten, was transitioning from modeling to acting when I ran into him in Miami. I was in Miami to perform at a winter music conference with my team, and I was having brunch at a place on south beach. I don’t recall who spotted whom first, but I remember how I felt when we saw each other. It had been over 10 yrs. See, after high school, we went in different directions. He got a scholarship to wrestle, and I got a record deal. Social media wasn’t as popular at the time. People had Aim instant messenger, and Facebook was only for college students. Yea, I remember having a Nokia non-flip cell phone. Sheesh! Anyway, we kept in contact. He told me he was moving to New York to take acting classes, and I told him to look me up once he made his move. He did, and we became roommates. He didn’t waste much time getting in where he fit in. I watched him closely and learned a lot from him. He took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. I admire the man’s resilience and devotion still to this day. I was the best man at his wedding, both of them (laughs). I was working regular jobs while figuring out my next move when Major invited me to one of his auditions. It was an international print campaign ad for Bushmills.

I went with him and a friend of his named Ron. A few days later, he called me with good news telling me we had booked it and we were going to Belfast, Ireland! That’s how my modeling journey began. LS: What has excited you the most about your powerful journey? RK: What’s excited me the most is how God has put a hedge of protection around me through it all. He’s opened doors for me that I wouldn’t have seen; he’s directed my steps to walk through them and put people in my life who’ve made tremendous contributions to my personal and business success. There’s been so many highs and lows, and I don’t know where I’d be without his favor. LS: What was your most memorable client? RK: No question. I went to Ireland for my first gig. Nothing has come close to that yet. I’m reminded of Carl Sagan, who said,” Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.” The best is yet to come, and the Bushmills campaign still has the top spot. LS: What would you advise aspiring models? RK: Start now. Identify why you want to do it. Please write it down and make it plain. Keep the dream in front of you, in plain sight - Identify 3 to 5 things you want to achieve within the next 3 to 5 yrs and write them down. Please put them in THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

37

your mirror, your refrigerator, and where you frequent the most. Make a vision board, and make a list of it so that it reminds you daily that’s where I want to be in the next 3 to 5 yrs. You’re going to need to know that because when times get rough and believe me, they will, you’re going to have to remember why you even started in the first place. Who are you doing this for? What kind of impact are you trying to make? Is it for fame? Question your motives. I challenge you to do that b/c you can waste a lot of time climbing a ladder to get to a place you don’t want to be. Commit now and figure it out later. If you treat this like a hobby, it will pay you like a hobby. Treating this like a profession will pay you like a profession. Find someone in life who is where you want to be; earn their trust and respect, value their time and see if they’ll help you. People like to help those they know, like, and trust. LS: Who has inspired you the most along your journey, and what was the best advice you’ve received? RK: His name is Marlon Mora, he told me to never take constructive criticism from someone who has never constructed

anything in the area of life that you wanna grow in. People will have opinions. They may want the best for you but they may not know exactly how to even help you succeed in the area you’re seeking. They’re like belly buttons, we all have them and they’re free. LS: When you think about the contributions of African American men to the literary industry, what is the impact you want your writing to have? RK: Mine will be up there with the greats. I’m a dreamer and my story will inspire other dreamers to not give up on their dream. My view is, if the dream is big enough the facts don’t count. True desire in the heart for anything good is God’s proof to you sent beforehand to indicate that it’s already yours. When it’s not in God’s time you can’t force it. When it is God’s time, you can’t stop it. The impact my writing will make will be greater than anything I currently imagine. When I go, what I take goes with me and the thought I put in these pages will live on in the hearts and minds of others to carry on my legacy. LS: How do you think COVID has changed the modeling and fashion industries? RK: It’s forced us to move from what we knew and practiced for years to pivot in the direction of leveraging online resources in a better way. For example, I used to hop on the train and head to NYC for auditions 3 to 4 times a week on the regular. Now, I go to my kitchen, set up my tripod and camera, do the audition from home, send it in and get on with the rest of my day. Do I miss the old process? Of course I do for many reasons. Do I save time and money from going back and forth to the city since the covid shift happened, absolutlely. I can make money back, on the other hand my time is my most valuable asset. LS: How have you grown since the start of the pandemic? RK: So glad you asked, I’ve grown in the most important areas, my relationships, both business and personal, my finances, my connection with God and my self-awareness have been renewed since then too. It taught me the value of working harder on myself than I do a job. LS: If you could change anything about the fashion/modeling industry, what would it be? RK: More inclusion of us meaning people of color and the perception of having to be a stereotypical runway model size to make it a career choice. LS: What advice do you have for aspiring actors? RK: Marry the process and divorce the results. Develop thick skin and a soft heart by making no your vitamin. You’ll get far more No’s than you do Yes’s as an actor. In the meantime, get

38

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

better at your craft by learning it. Become a student of it. Stay ready so you don’t have to spend so much time to get ready. It’s better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have one and not be prepared. Develop an appetite for reading and do it daily. It doesn’t have to be a lot, just do it consistently b/c it trains the mind to find things in different ways. Think about it, when we read we engage more of our senses, don’t we? We see it and hear and touch the words on the page. LS: You are a very accomplished model, but you are also an actor. What made you step into the film industry? RK: Honestly, I really haven’t stepped into the film industry yet. You can count on one hand how many films I’ve been in. I’ve been striving in the commercial world. T.V. and film is coming. LS: What are some of the challenges you have faced during this journey? RK: Getting out of my own way. Meaning staying brandnew and taking action when opportunity shows up. I’m thankful I can pick and choose what projects I wanna be involved in but sometimes my attitude to audition sucks. I’m getting better though. LS: If you could change anything about the film industry, what would it be? RK: Hmm…I don’t really have an answer for that at this time. I haven’t really thought about what I would change. LS: What is a phrase or mantra you live by? Why? RK: Are you kidding me?! There’s so many of them..uh…geez.. One that comes to mind is,” Work for a cause not for applause.” Let’s see “Live to express not to impress” There’s a quote by former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden I’ll leave you with, it goes like this, “Talent is God-given, be humble; fame is man given, be thankful, conceit is self-given, be careful.” Latch on to something bigger than youself. That’s really it. That’s what I did. LS: Moving forward in your career, what can we expect from you next? RK: Moving forward, expect to see me in more speaking roles on television, performing in front of larger audiences on stage, and leading by example in my growing business outside of the entertainment industry. The goal is to introduce as many people I can to the people and ideas that will actually help them execute on their dreams. To do that I have to be on a constant journey of discovering what’s most important to those I desire to be relevant to, then build my brand, my offerings, and my authentic way of being from that.

SPOTLIGHT ARTIST Lovely Cent

Who Is Lovely Cent? by Kisha Green One look at one of her pictures and immediately drawn into this beautiful woman, but what else besides a pretty face and a curvy body? The world does not know if this is a determined single mother of four. Being a survivor is instilled in her Haitian roots as her parents wanted better for her and her siblings as they relocated to the United States for a better life as her mother became a nurse and her father a chef. Cent says firsthand that failure was never going to be an option. At an early age, she knew she wanted to be a model. Even though she was quiet and shy, she wanted the world to look at and respect her, as she had a fierce presence and a true sense of style. This mother realized that if she wanted to turn her dreams into a reality, she had to learn to balance her personal and professional life. Regardless of life’s curve balls, you must remain resilient and stand ten toes down. This method is only sometimes foolproof for Cent as she is sometimes impatient and wants things to happen immediately. Still, her humility kept her grounded that her reputation would dictate her opportunities and success. Superficial prejudices are something she learned early on in the modeling industry is not always lovely or receptive to a model her size and height of 5’1. The industry slammed many doors in her face as many inquiries went unanswered. This experience was one of the many reasons; Cent wants to one day open a modeling agency that showcases women of various sizes, heights, and colors. Her debut novel is a personal memoir about her most profound and passionate thoughts and feelings as a way of expressing herself since she is in tune with herself. Next for this superstar is to publish more books and acting lessons so she can take her talents to the big screen and stage. This busy mother also loves to indulge in Garlic Lemon

I love wine! So anytime I’m able to visit a winery I go. For my birthday this year, my sister and mother took me to City Scape Winery in Pelzer, South Carolina. It’s a small town about forty five minutes from where I live. Out in the country is a beautiful scenery. It’s a field of greenery where the grapes are growing. The atmosphere was very nice and the wine was delicious. My choice of the best wine that we tasted was the coffee delight. It’s served in a skinny bottle that’s not only mixed with wine but a portion of. alcohol with coffee flavor. It is very good. The cheese board had a wide selection of different meats and breads with jellies. I highly recommend visiting this place of City Scape Winery if you are a wine fanatic such as I.
