The Amen Corner-Vol14 by Nayomi Charnelle “Yesterday” by Mary Mary When I think about who I wabs 4 years ago, I can’t do anything but shake my head. Who was this chick? Yes I could clearly see my bitterness and brokenness with everything I posted. It didn’t help that I was in a very toxic relationship with a man who only cared about money, sex and being drunk. He only spoke to God and went to church when he needed something from God. He never formed a healthy relationship with God or with me for that matter. So why did I stay in a relationship that was meaningless and hurtful and that almost destroyed me? The answer is simple; MY bitterness and brokenness kept me ignorant to who I really was and even worse, who I could become. It kept me ignorant to how God saw me. I was slowly but surely losing my soul. I was afraid to speak up because if I spoke up would have lost that relationship. In the midst of all that pain, I thought having a bad relationship was better than having no relationship at all. The saving grace was that God saw past my bitterness and my brokenness! He made it so I could slowly but surely build a relationship with him and pick up those broken pieces. He gave me beauty for all those ashes at a time where I couldn’t see any beauty in nothing. I’m so grateful that he knew somewhere under all that pain, bitterness and brokenness, that I was his beautiful baby girl and now I’m blessed To be an Evangelist that wins souls for his glory. The song “Yesterday” by Mary Mary reminds me that we may have had a terrible beginning but through God’s grace and mercy, we can leave behind the things that hurt us. We may never forget those things but we one thing is for sure… those things didn’t break us. We are still here. Scripture of Reference: Isaiah 61:3 Evangelist Nayomi THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Experienced Singer, Guitarist, and Bassist Interview by The Heat Seekers

Hailing from Rochester, New York, Rick Marcel spent most of his upbringing listening to Salsa, Jazz, Blues, Pop and Soul music. At the age of 12, he began sneaking in to local clubs and venues sitting in with adult bands and refining his Vocal, Bass and Guitar skills. He started his first band (The Radiance Band) at the age of 13 along with two of his closest friends - Drummer, Tony Howard and Bassist, Scot D. Brown performing at countless venues across upstate New York. They caught the eye of one of the biggest Promoters in the world, Mr. Alan Haymon who booked them as opening acts for well-known entertainers such as Maze, Millie Jackson, SOS Band and Kashif. They also played at many local colleges throughout upstate New York. Rick moved to Houston in 1993 and became the Guitar and Bass sound of Southern Modern Hip Hop working for such labels as Rap A Lot Records – UGK, Pimp C, Bun B, Slim Thug, Ghetto Boys, Bushwick Bill, Will D, and Scarface, Short Stop Records – PH Factor and Lil O and later in 1998 he was introduced to Cash Money Records by Papa Reu where he sparked a Musical/Producer relationship with Mannie Fresh producing such Artists as Lil Wayne, BG, Big Tymers, Juvenile, Mack 10, Tina Marie, and Turk just to name a few. You can also hear Rick on records with artists such as Chris Walker, Marcus Anderson, Regina Belle, Lady E, Stellar Award Winner -James Fortune, Natalie, The Las Vegas Mass Choir, Bridgette Taylor, Gary Mayes, Ed Montgomery, Sheila Moore Piper, Kyle Turner, and DW3. He is a regular on many Cruises such as The Dave Koz & Friends Cruise, Smooth Jazz Cruise and Soul Train Cruise.

Rick, thank you for taking time out of your day to talk to us. The Heat Seekers: You have been in the industry for decades, tell us what made you decide to be serious about the music industry? Rick Marcel: Growing Up in Rochester there was so many Bands & venues to play and a great black owned Radio Station named WDkX Radio which has no limits of what they would play Musically. I played in clubs at 13. Music choose Me from day 1. What made Me serious was being influenced By great Bands like, The Isley Brothers, Kool & The Gang, Cameo, Gap Band, and Prince. I would end up working later on with all these Artists.

Rick currently splits his time between Houston, Texas and Los Angeles, California where he is frequently seen sitting in with Bands such as DW3, Michael Lington, L.A Collective and Scott Gertner’s All Stars.

THS: You have had great success over the years with many artists. Tell us more about your experiences? RM: My first real experience, was working as a session musician at Paisley Park Studio with Prince at 18 years old, which changed My life. He was a task master, allowing Me to play Guitar and Bass and overdub Background Vocals on tracks. Never toured with Him. My first real Tour was with Ron Isley, filling in for Ernie Isley. After that Charlie Wilson, Deniece Williams, Stephanie Mills and now, Kool & The Gang. Each Situation totally different things about the many approaches and styles of music And discipline takes on the road. I’m thankful to each and everyone of these artists for sharing their space and teaching Me.

Rick also has his own music that he arranges, writes and produces as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. His “Made For You” CD and “Love Letter” CD is a cross between Jazz Fusion and R&B.

THS: Tell us about your experience with Kool & The Gang? Tour wise this Band, I have to play more roles as a Singer, Guitarist, and Bassist. In 2018, Kool Bell came off the road for THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

9

10 months when His Wife became Sick and passed away. I had to cover His Bass chair, which taught Me so much so many grooves and swing elements inside the music they make, which makes it special and timeless hits. Also, learning from the Late Ronald Khalis Bell, Funky George Brown, and Robert Kool Bell as well as other amazing Members of the Band. I have to always keep all My Skills sharp at all times. THS: What has been the most memorable moment for you while working with artists? RM: There is so Many… like Singing a Duet with the great Stephanie Mills, she’s a great teacher and always showing Me things about Vocal Maintenance care. She’s a master of stage. Another, was playing all of Ernie Isley’s Guitar solos, standing next to Ron Isley. Another was Charlie Wilson, singing every phrase and line to Me from “Yearnin for Your Love” Guitar Solo. Yes, Mr. Wilson knows every part! A true Pro. THS: Who has had the most influence on your career and why? RM: I would say that would be Prince, because I’ve never seen any one person work as hard as Him. THS: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? RM: Patience, Prayer and Faith. THS: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? RM: Practice hard and study other greats as a guideline. THS: What does a typical day in your week look like when dealing with music? RM: It could vary from prep for A tour, Learning new Musical arrangements and prepare Mentally as well. THS: Did you have a “I want to give up” moment in your career? RM: When I first learned to play, because I was a late bloomer when it came to certain things about playing parts. Once I learned to let things flow, My confidence got better. THS: What does the future hold for Rick Marcel? RM: I wanna record & produce more music. THS: How can fans reach you on social media? Lessons I Learned from Dad by: King Brooks

Last month we did ‘Lessons I Learned from Mom.’ So, we thought it would be wise to do Lessons from Dad in honor of Father’s Day. When I put the call out, I never thought the response would be this great. But many respond and didn’t disappoint. So, please read and see if you can relate to any of them below.

“Every situation doesn’t need a reaction.” ~Denitra LaShay Satcher “My dad always told us to hold our heads high and to not allow anyone to make us feel worthless. He also said my sister and I were beautiful black women, and didn’t need to clog up our pores with make-up because we were naturally beautiful. I never forgot those pearls of wisdom. I miss my dad. I was definitely a daddy’s girl!!” ~Gwen Fleming “To always earn my own money. My dad told me if I did, I would never have to bed or beg a man for nothing.” ~Candy Jackson “Don’t allow pain to make me bitter.”~ Kim Rosemon Woods “Don’t do anything while the boss is away that you would not do when they are there.” ~Gena Jackson “I don’t always have to say what I think and if I don’t stop, my mouth was going to get me in trouble. He didn’t lie.” ~Candy McQueen “Keep living you will find out that the grass is not greener on the other side.” ~ Marilyn Larke “To be willing to listen, that all negative actions do not deserve responses, and be respectful to all people.” ~Antionette Gates

“I learned so many lessons from my dad. He was always a great role model and just a good human being. What I always remember though, was his approach to money. He told me to always be willing to work overtime to buy whatever I wanted, but to never do it for anything I needed… meaning live within my means, and not be stretched financially. He also taught me to always have a car payment. Meaning, even after my car is paid off, to continue putting that money away in savings. I didn’t always do that but most of the time I did.” ~Terri Moore-Barnes “Too many!! But my favorite was to never do anything I had to think about. If I have to ponder, it’s not for me and regret will follow. Took me years to understand that.” ~Sunkyssed Teana “How to be responsible.” ~Wil Fred “Get up and get your own in this life don’t wait on anybody to hand you anything.” ~Tamara Randolph “Make sure you have everything you need and work.” ~Sharon Miller-Ransom “You can’t change foolish people.” ~Joyce Pettiford Manning “Don’t start nothing but finish whatever is started with you.” ~Stephanie D Merritt “Tell the truth and honor and respect people’s time by being on time.” ~ Nakisha Allen “God can’t bless you if you don’t show up! Your name is what you are born with and you will die with, so make it count. You can never say “I love you” too much.” ~ Marcie Green “Family first, love God, and be financially responsible.” ~ Curtrina Smith “Men will treat you any way you allow them whether you are his wife or his bed partner, it does not matter. Make him earn your respect.” ~Carolyn M. Jackson

Niko Michelle: Uncensored Interview by King Brooks of Black Page Turners

I have known Niko Michelle for 5 years now and I have enjoyed getting to know her and experiencing her sense of humor. She first reached out to me to read her book Pose, and I am glad she did. It has been a joy to watch her start off indie and later sign with a major publisher. Then branch off into films. So, sit back and enjoy this interview. Let us know what you thought on social media. King Brooks: Hi Niko, how are you? Niko Michelle: I cannot and will not complain. Life is good. KB: Tell us about your new novel ‘Jilted?’ NM: Imagine standing at the altar, exchanging vows, and in wobbles a pregnant lady who not only objects but drops a bombshell announcement. She is pregnant with the groom’s baby. If that isn’t bad enough, the same woman goes into labor in the middle of the aisle. Worse, the bride is forced to deliver the baby because she is an OBGYN. Now, what happens after that? You’ll just have to read. Oh, and that’s just the first chapter. KB: Where did the idea for this story come from? NM: I know a young lady who was in a relationship, or so she thought. She found out the guy was engaged and had a baby on the way. It took her by total surprise. I used her experience, brainstormed, added a couple of what-ifs, and spun it into Jilted. KB: How long did it take for you to write ‘Jilted?’ NM: I don’t remember the specific time frame for the entire manuscript, but I do remember this particular story secured me a literary agent. First came the great Tiffany L. Warren, who critiqued a portion of the story and gave me some dynamite pointers. I took her feedback, reworked the story, and started querying. I received two offers. TWO! In a sea of rejection letters, I didn’t see that coming. I prayed hard. What was a girl to do? I signed with Shawanda Williams, which has been the best thing ever. I told the story of Jilted, which was titled something else, in roughly 45,000 words. My agent loved the story but told me the manuscript had to be 75,000 words to get a deal. Say what? I did the math on my fingers, then on a calculator. Basically, I had to add 30,000 words. I wanted it, so I did it in under a month.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

15

KB: What do you want readers to take away from ‘Jilted?’ NM: LOL! A little disclaimer. I don’t necessarily write for anything more than entertainment. Now, if readers take anything away from Jilted, I hope they will see that sometimes it takes for your world to be flipped upside down to start living your purposed life. I think we sometimes become so complacent that we settle and pretend. Or we tend to live our lives according to what other people think is best for us. Don’t be afraid to step out there and try. Guess what? It will be okay. KB: Who is Niko Michelle as a person/author? NM: Niko Michelle as a person, is goofy and adventurous. She will walk up to an alligator, introduce herself, and ask if it would like to play but will outrun any track star to get away from a bug. Makes perfect sense, right? As an author, she is surprisingly timid about her work yet determined to learn as much as possible through writing classes, networking, and reading. KB: When did the writing bug hit you? NM: The bug hit me in elementary school. I’d write to escape my unpleasant reality. Then when I got older, that nagging bug was back. Remember, I am very much afraid of bugs, so I ran from it. One day out of boredom, I started a story that I made my friend Monique read. She encouraged me to keep going. I think we traded stories at work. LOL. From there, every time I got bored, I’d write. Endgame came to me in a dream. I wrote the beginning and end, no middle, but I made my friends and family read it. One, in particular, Gina, encouraged and pushed me to publish it. She really harassed me, but I’m being nice. I researched for hours and weeks. Rejection after rejection. Persistence paid off, and here I am. KB: What advice would you give to an aspiring author? NM: It’s simple and cliché. Write. Set aside a daily goal to add words to the pages. Even if it’s 50 or 100 words, that will eventually lead to an entire book. Most importantly, invest in writing classes and find writing groups to join and accountability partners to help you reach your goals. KB: How can readers get in touch with you and find your books? NM: Okay, because I am more of a telephone book and picking up the phone to call people kind of girl, it may seem like I don’t have social media, but I do. I am going to do better. Facebook: Niko Michelle. Instagram: story_telling_niko, website: www.nikomichelle.com. My work can be purchased from Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Target, and Walmart.

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

KB: Tell us about the next book ‘Dear Diary’ and ‘Full Figured 17?’ NM: Dear Diary. That was a tough one. I toggled with the outcome and am interested to see how much hate mail I will get on that. Hopefully, it will start a much-needed conversation about mental health in the African American community. It does exist, and it can’t just be prayed away. To sum it up, the book follows a young lady who starts hearing voices from her deceased brother, encouraging her to avenge his death. She marries the man responsible for the car accident that took her brother’s life. When she’s stable on meds, things are good. When she’s inconsistent with her meds, things are rocky. Because she is often judged, it’s hard to remain consistent. Ultimately, she kills her husband, but was the murder premeditated or a result of her often-untreated mental health disorder? With Full Figured 17. YIKES. I challenged myself on that one. To all pastors and church congregations –read this book, but do not judge me or put me in church time out. It’s sexy entertainment. My story is called Red Flags, and I tackle the term; throughout this book. Redarra is overweight and was always told she’d have to settle because of her size. Well, she lands the star football player of her college. Things are great until her boyfriend is caught in an uncompromising

position with another guy. Eventually, they talk, and he tells her she should have paid attention to the red flags. Redarra then goes on a mission to leave him some anonymous red flags of her own. KB: Tell us about your crafting projects? NM: My who? LOL. That was a coping mechanism. I broke my neck, which caused some severe spinal issues that resulted in about ten procedures. Crafting and coloring kept me sane. Since writing and movie projects have picked up, I honestly haven’t given much time to crafting projects. I’m a fake crafter. I have to be in the mood. KB: What can we expect from you in the future? NM: I am currently working on a book called Pretty Brown Eyes. It follows the story of a black female serial killer. I’m excited about this because it’s different, but the twist gives even me goosebumps. Remember that super-agent I told you about? She has me producing movies. Crazy right? Never saw that for me. My future will be filled with books, films, and scriptwriting. Fingers crossed. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

BRANDilly… A Small Fish in a Big Pond Interview by Angela Anderson

“We are the best because our clients deserve the best.” ~ BRANDilly Creative Group BRANDilly is made up of a team of marketing and creative professionals with a simple focus-the success of their clients. They have a successful track record of helping brands not only compete and win against their competitors but to engage new customers and grow the bottom lines. BRANDilly is a significant player in the industry that offers a fresh, innovative edge from branding and creating logos to websites and digital and printed materials. They pride themselves in building relationships and partnering with their clients to understand their individual needs, evaluating their brand’s value, and creating a well-thought-out designed experience. Small fish in a BIG pond, you say. At BRANDilly, they consistently provide high-performance marketing and creative services that offer the same comprehensive approach larger agencies provide while abandoning the huge budget mentality. They take pride in their client relationships, service, talent, and ability to “keep up with the Joneses.” In fact, the Joneses are trying to keep up with them. Kemah E. P. Washington, Founder and President of BRANDilly, shares with The Heat Seekers Magazine the value, uniqueness, and top-level service they bring. Angela Anderson: What inspired the birth of your business? Kemah E. P. Washington: I started Six Degreez Entertainment as a sophomore in college (Millersville University). When we first got started, we were doing street team promotion for events on campus and in the Central PA area. Six Degrees of Separation came out a few years earlier, and we thought it was a great way to brand ourselves. Get your event in our hands, and we’d get the word out to the masses. Around 2001 we expanded from promoting events to planning parties and concerts. Naturally, once we started down the road of planning a show, we needed to create graphics and marketing collateral to promote the shows. That’s how I started designing and printing. AA: What is the mission of BRANDilly? KW: We help brands compete and win against their competitors --

20

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

engaging new customers and growing bottom lines. Sometimes that means creating logos, websites, digital and printed collateral -- you know, stuff creative agencies do.. AA: What’s the story behind the name, BRANDilly? KW: My wife’s name is Brandi. When we were first dating, I used to call her Brandily (bran-da-lee). In 2009, we combined our businesses and were trying to come up with a new name. On vacation and sitting at the beach, it hit me that my nickname for her had the word “brand” in it. That’s how BRANDilly (brandil-lee) Marketing and Creative was birthed. In 2019, we rebranded to the BRANDilly Creative Group. AA: What aspect of the business do you enjoy? KW: I love creating things. In my spare time, I garden and do a lot of woodworking. There’s something about planting a seed and watching it grow or sketching out a plan for a new shed and building it from the ground up. Professionally, the work I do with BRANDilly is no different. Logos, print collateral, brand identities, websites… the process of taking a concept floating around in a client’s head and crafting that into something relatable, eye-catching, and the ability to move folks to the point of action is what I love the most about what I do. AA: What can customers expect from the BRANDilly Brand? KW: At BRANDilly, we provide high-performance marketing and creative services–offering the same comprehensive approach mega agencies provide while abandoning the huge budget mentality. We pride ourselves on our client relationships, dependable service, rich talent, and our ability to keep up with the Joneses. Whether your needs are professional, sexy, or offthe-wall, we can provide an insightful edge to your branding campaign. AA: June is the month we celebrate Father’s Day. What does being a father mean to you? KW: Being a father means showing up for my daughters. Sometimes it’s as simple as making space to color with my 6-year-old. Other times it’s running dad jokes with my 12-year-old. At the end of the day, it all comes back to being present for them. AA: What do you enjoy about fatherhood? KW: I love the little things like how my baby girl greets me in the morning with a kiss and then proceeds to tell me that she’s hungry. I love how my oldest tries so hard to be cool, but every now and then, she’ll come and hold my hand or sit in my lap. It feels good to be loved and needed. AA: What is one piece of advice you would share with new small business owners who are just getting started? KW: Seek out a mentor. Talk to someone who’s done what you

are trying to do… and then some. Read! The library is full of free life and business hacks that can literally save you hundreds of hours… and dollars. AA: What’s next for BRANDilly? KW: We’re expanding rapidly as one of the startups we’re involved with was recently acquired by a publicly traded crypto-investment firm. Within the next 3-6 months, we’ll be doubling the size of our creative department and working on a variety of professional and collegiate sports marketing projects. AA: How can people connect with you? KW: They can email me at kemah@bcgnc.com or reach out via Instagram and Facebook @brandillycg. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Conversations LIVE with Cyrus Webb 28 THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Conversations LIVE with Cyrus Webb Interview by Angela Anderson

Cyrus Webb, the host of Conversations LIVE, is a radio and on-air personality, editor-in-chief of Conversations Magazine and Mississippi Success Magazine, author, social media influencer, and Top 200 Amazon.com Reviewer. Cyrus has consistently been growing his brand for almost two decades as the host of Conversations LIVE radio show, interviewing over 11,000 guests. Since 2003, he has built the Conversations LIVE brand into an internationally recognized force that shares the stories of others and makes a difference in how people see themselves and spotlight what is possible. Through the Conversations LIVE podcast, Cyrus Webb has a gift for introducing the listeners to movers and shakers around the world who are living their dreams, overcoming challenges, and showing others what is possible for them. The podcast consistently provides an interactive space for individuals in entertainment and the arts to come together to discuss whatever unites them in life. The Heat Seekers Magazine had an opportunity to catch up with Cyrus Webb and discuss the Conversations LIVE podcast. Angela Anderson: How did you get started in podcasting? Cyrus Webb: Podcasting for me became a way of archiving my radio show Conversations LIVE. I discovered podcasting in 2008. By this time, I had been doing radio for five years, and though I loved it, there was no way to save my show other than my mom recording it on cassette tapes. Podcasting became a way that I could do my shows live and still share them with the world afterward. AA: What inspired you to start the Conversations LIVE podcast? CW: Conversations LIVE was my way of spotlighting others. When I started the show in 2003, I knew I wanted to give a platform and voice to those who might have felt ignored or left out. I knew what that was like, so I wanted to create a place where everyone felt seen and heard. AA: What makes the Conversations LIVE podcast unique? CW: I think what separates Conversations LIVE from other podcasts is that we are not afraid to mix things up. Some will tell you to focus on one thing. That formula has worked for some, but for me, Conversations LIVE has to reflect my own interests and passions. That means we talk about music, books, com munity, entertainment, and more. The truth is you never know

who is coming by the show next, and THAT makes it stand out. AA: Share with us some of the behind-the-scenes of what is involved with making one podcast episode. CW: Great question. For me, it is the planning. About 2 hours of planning goes into one show from the background, research, and then the promotion. All of that makes for an enjoyable experience when we’re live. AA: What is an aspect of your podcast that brings you tremendous joy? CW: The response from the guest without a doubt. My goal is to THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

29

make each and every guest feel special. If I accomplish that, then everything else is gravy. AA: What can a listener expect to receive when they tune into the Conversations LIVE podcast? CW: Interestingly enough, even those who have followed me for the past 19 years probably will not know a great deal about me. What I mean is that the show is not me-centric. I’m the host, but the guest is the star. The show is not about me. It’s about the guest and what they bring to the table. AA: What is one piece of advice you would share with someone who wants to start a podcast? CW: Another great question! Definitely be yourself. Everyone else is taken. Don’t try to be the next X, Y, or Z. Bring you to the show, and you’re guaranteed to win. AA: In honor of Father’s Day, what is a piece of fatherly advice shared with you from your father or an influential male figure that has stuck with you over the years? CW: For me, that advice would be to know who you are. We, as men, are varied. There is no one model for what makes a man, and we have to be careful as men not to judge others by ourselves. I stand in my own space, and that is a gift I have been given. AA: What’s next for the Conversations LIVE podcast? CW: Conversations LIVE is celebrating 19 years in July, and we are going to be planning some special events around that. The big thing for me is to expect even bigger guests, more thought-provoking conversations, and more outlets. AA: Share with us where and when people can listen to the Conversations LIVE podcast. CW: The main place for Conversations LIVE the podcast is www. blogtalkradio.com/conversationslive, but we are also heard on Amazon Music and iHeartRadio. AA: How can people stay connected with you? CW: Thanks again for the opportunity. The main places to stay connected with me are Facebook at www.facebook.com/ cyruswebb, Twitter at www.twitter.com/cyruswebb, and Instagram at www.instagram.com/cyruswebbpresents.

The Headliner To Be or Not To Be by DAViD SPENCER

Comedians Mo’Nique and D.L. Hughley were going after each other in a heated online feud. Mo’Nique, during her performance in May at the Comedy Explosion, stated that she was supposed to be the headline performer for the event, and Hughley had refused to perform if Mo’Nique remained the headliner. I almost got suckered into trying to take a side. Then I remembered I am not there yet. I can not afford to invest so much time and energy into figuring out who should headline the event. That sounds like a rich people’s problem to me. At this point in my career, I’d go first, last, and would consider it an honor that people want to pay to grace the stage at their event.

We hold more debt than our counterparts partly due to predatory lending practices, where blacks receive more loans than they do grants. David Spencer is a communications professional, gifted singer, public speaker, and author. His voice can be heard loud and clear, regardless of the medium he chooses. He is responsible for influencing the people around him through his works.

All issues matter! We must fight the good fight, but some of this can be overwhelming. If we continue to make every issue, our issue will be mad about something all the time. The truth is there will always be an issue. I hope Mo’Niue and D.L.Hughley will take this disagreement offline and handle it professionally and privately. Understand, I am not downplaying their issue, but I have to protect my mental space. I cannot be a champion for every case. White shooters can be taken alive by the police while black men die in the streets because they perceive

Extending the Universal Language of Music from Concert Halls to Classrooms to Books Interview by Angela Anderson

Brendan Slocumb was born in Yuba City, California, and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a degree in music education, with a concentration in Violin and Viola. While at UNCG, Brendan was the concertmaster for the University Symphony orchestra and served as the principal violist. Brendan has dedicated twenty-plus years to both public and private school music education from kindergarten through twelfth grade, teaching general music, orchestra, and guitar ensembles. Through music, Brendan developed a work ethic that he consciously makes an effort to instill in his students so that they can experience the joys of what music can do for us all with its built-in universal language. This musical extraordinaire even has a rock band, which he enjoys performing with, and even has written original songs for, Geppetto’s Wüd. Fast forward to the summer of 2020, during the pandemic, Brendan found himself with the time to focus on writing. Although he had written before, none of his work had ever been published. Add to that the traumatization, heartache, and pain felt across the United States caused by the murder of George Floyd. The aftermath of the racial reckoning brought about a realization that people in the world were becoming more receptive to looking at the realness of racism and discrimination that exist. This, in part, inspired Brendan to write a novel based on his reality and path as a Black classical musician growing up in the South. The inspiration for his debut novel began to take shape. As the characters created melodies and notes in his head traveling down to his fingertips, Brendan birthed his debut novel, The Violin Conspiracy, in roughly two months. His debut novel was the February 2022 GMA Book Club Pick. A musician, music teacher, fitness buff, comic book collector, and now author are just a few things to describe the eclecticness of Brendan Slocumb. Brendan has found his flow and has no signs of slowing down when it comes to bringing riveting stories to the masses to enjoy.

Angela Anderson: When did you know that you wanted to become an author? Brendan Slocumb: I’ve always read comic books and have always put words on paper. Over the past years, I’ve dabbled at writing novels. But it wasn’t until the pandemic, when I had too much time on my hands, that I decided to get serious about writing. AA: What do you enjoy about writing and creating stories? BS: It’s extraordinarily amazing to watch ideas and words and scenes in my head come to life on the page. It’s incredibly rewarding. AA: How would you describe your writing style? BS: Solid book club fiction that’s hopefully entertaining and fun to read. THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

37

people would actually listen to me, acknowledge my experiences, and not deny that my perspective was as valid as theirs. AA: The Violin Conspiracy is also a GMA Book Club Pick. What was your reaction to this amazing encounter? BS: I was stunned, humbled, and absolutely thrilled. It was the most exciting experience of my life: seeing my face in Times Square, being interviewed in – and playing on the stage of – Carnegie Hall: there’s never been anything like it. I’m still in disbelief that all of this is actually happening. AA: If you could describe The Violin Conspiracy in three words, what would they be? BS: Fast-paced, heartfelt.

AA: Do you have any quirky writing habits or must-haves when you are in your writing flow? BS: I have to have the TV on – I function better when I’m not working in total silence. Definitely no classical music, though – that distracts me because I’m constantly analyzing it. AA: What was one surprising thing you learned about yourself during the writing process? BS: I learned that I had to be vulnerable when I write. In order to make the scenes and people ring true on the page, I had to put myself on the page with them – quirks and weaknesses, too. That was pretty scary to do, and I’m still struggling to get used to doing it regularly. AA: You released your debut novel during the month of February 2022, The Violin Conspiracy. What was the inspiration behind this story? BS: I’ve been walking around with stories to tell for most of my life. I know, being in the classical music world, that there are a lot of people just like me, with similar stories, and we’ve never had the opportunity to tell them before. Nobody really cared how hard it was to play the violin or felt sorry for me if I couldn’t take private lessons. Which is fine: I don’t need people to feel sorry for me. But they didn’t seem to want to hear what I faced, as a Black man. My perspective was vastly different from what they were used to, and by “different,” it seemed that it also meant that my perspective was wrong. When I told people about things that happened in my life, people would say, “No you’re exaggerating, no that doesn’t happen, absolutely not.” Finally, the tragic events of 2020 made it seem like this was a moment when I could tell my stories and that

38 THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

AA: You have written your first novel and currently working on your second. What is one piece of advice you would give to aspiring authors? BS: Put in the work every day. 1000 words a day, minimum. No excuses, no procrastinating. Even if the 1000 words are terrible, they’re something – and having them written down, glowing on your screen, will mean the next day you’ll have a place to start and edit them and make them better. AA: June is the month we celebrate Father’s Day. Who is an influential man in your life and how has he helped shape and mold you into the man you are today? BS: My younger brother, who passed away last year, and to whom I dedicated The Violin Conspiracy, showed me what it was to be a good big brother. He wanted to follow in my footsteps, so I always tried to set a good example for him. AA: When you think of fathers and father figures, what comes to mind? BS: My students have told me that I was their father figure. Even kids with two parents in their home, my students always felt like they could come to me and that I’d keep their confidences. And that’s what a good father figure means to me: someone authoritative, but approachable. AA: When you are not writing, what can we find you doing? BS: Collecting comics and exercising. AA: What is next for Brendan Slocumb? BS: I’ve finished writing my next book and currently doing the final edits on it now – and I can’t wait to start my third novel! AA: How can we stay connected with you? BS: I am active on social media. You can stay connected with me on Instagram at BrendanSlocumb, Twitter at Brendan_Slocumb, and Facebook, Brendan.Slocumb.

with Kisha Green My name is Kisha Green, and when I am not online stirring the pot of controversy regarding the popular topics of sex, dating, and relationships, you will find me here—sharing my commentary with you that will wonder if it is fiction or not? You will have to check back each month and be the judge. Besides that, I am a Certified Life Coach, award-winning blogger, author, and a 46-year-old divorced mother of four. And being as though I have lived a very colorful life, I figured why not share with my social media family. This month’s theme is Fathers, and although I would love to take this time to tell you how my dad taught me how to tie my shoe, catch my first fish and wipe my eyes after my first heartbreak, I cannot because I did not know my father. I am a product of an extramarital affair. Woosah! Yeah, I said it publicly for you all to digest. Now do not get me wrong, I am not going to turn this into some male bashing column, but for the sake of this topic, I cannot miss what I have never had but also am a firm believer that it is a father that breaks a girl’s heart long before a man does. So when it comes to dating, if a female does possess those “daddy issues,” she will spend her dating life trying to find the right guy that will make her feel secure and never let her go. It sort of sounds like a romance novel, right? It is true that we played with dolls and Barbies as young girls and played house where we took care of the home, cooking and tending to the kids, and the father was out working. This was our fairytale until reality set in. The nightmare reveals that men do leave and or never stick around. So ultimately, women have to not think like a man but think like a wise woman, and instead of waiting to be selected by these guys, let us choose them and set a realistic checklist of what qualities they need to possess to date us; remember this, WE ARE THE PRIZE!

By Her Own Design By Piper Huguley

By Her Own Design is the untold story of Ann Lowe, Fashion Designer to the social register. This remarkable story spotlights a hidden figure and gem to the social elite, who designed and created one of America’s most famous wedding dresses, one worn by Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953 on her wedding day to John F. Kennedy. A story of a woman who was never truly given her just due. Ann Lowe was the best-kept secret who designed beautiful original dresses from the 1920s through the 1960s. Each one was created as a one-of-akind masterpiece. Her designs and creativity were a true work of art, her personal canvas and gift to each owner. Ann Lowe had an extraordinary gift passed down from a generation of seamstresses learning the art of sewing from her mother and her grandmother, a former slave. In 1953, in New York, Ann Lowe’s dress shop had a pipe burst ruining the expensive wedding dress that would be viewed by the world. The story starts at the backdrop of this catastrophe. Ann Lowe and her seamstresses must make it happen and re-create the dresses within a limited amount of time. The show must go on. Ann Lowe is no stranger to struggling or being in a fight to protect herself and her talent and work. She had to make it happen and get the dresses complete. There was so much at stake and riding on this commission job. Written in three parts, The Question, The Answer, and The Dream Comes True; Piper Huguley gives a voice to the best-kept secret of the high society. She gives you the realness and rawness of the unveiling of Ann Lowe, giving a well-deserved presence to her voice. She brings a shine to this woman’s extraordinary determination to focus on her career and overcome her obstacles and roadblocks to triumph in a sincere and genuine way for all to know and appreciate. By Her Own Design is worth every bit of the hype. It was a highly anticipated read for me, and Piper Huguley did not disappoint. This book gave me all the feels. I was emotionally attached from the beginning to the end. She totally had me at the prologue. The brilliance of her writing style captures your attention and holds it captive until the very last page. I can honestly say Piper Huguley left it all on the pages. Her writing was so prolific that even the nonverbal, unspoken emotions of Ann Lowe had a voice that was heard loud and clear. She did an excellent job bringing the story of Ann Lowe to life in an unforgettable way. This is truly biographical historical fiction at its finest. I highly recommend this book. It is a wow factor of a read that is totally book hangover worthy. It gets 5 café stars from me. By Her Own Design can be found where books are sold and on the website of Piper Huguley at www.piperhuguley.com. It can also be found at indie bookstores, including Riches In Reading, www.richesinreading.com

Charles D. Clark is an American-born multi-award winning professional SAG-Aftra actor known for his “Bad Boy” role in the FOX hit show Empire as one of Shine’s main Goon Enforcers. Charles has also played various Detective roles on hit true crime series that aired on TV One, ID Channel along with being in several upcoming big screen and indie films . His latest appearance was in Will and Jada Pinkett Smith new movie “ Charm City Kings “ which is on HBO Max and Elysium Productions “ Volkov Origin. Charles has an extensive resume that is destined to continue to expand into being the next star in Hollywood . Outside of acting Charles is also a multi-award winning transformation speaker empowering lives worldwide through his powerful and life-changing testimony. Stay tuned…Charles D. Clark is the newest face in Hollywood known for always giving God the glory! The Heat Seekers: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Charles D. Clark: I was born in VA but moved to North Carolina at a young age. I come from a God loving family and worked on farms, livestock so definitely I’m a true country boy. My dad died when I was 5 which was devastating. Although my mom tried all she could to raise me I ended up eventually hanging in the streets becoming a gang banger and a goon enforcer that ultimately landed me in prison for almost 8 years. But because how great God is He gave me a second chance at life and today I’m proud of the man I became. THS: How long have you been acting? CDC: I’ve been acting for 13 years. I landed my first role the same year I was released from prison in 2009. I was acting on and off until I got on EMPIRE and that’s when I quit my job as a behavioral specialist and suicide counselor to pursue acting full time. THS: What made you decide to be serious about the film industry? CDC: I never had no idea to becoming a professional SAG-AFTRA actor. I didn’t become one to be famous or a celebrity. It was an experience I had with my late grandmother Lucille Clark. She came to visit me in prison during my last year there. She had several brain tumors and dementia so her memory of course was affected to the point she thought I was my dad which he was her oldest child. So for 2 and half hours I had to ACT like my dad for the sake of her condition which was emotional and

After my grandmother left with my Aunt and Uncle who brought her up there the correctional officer told me that whatever I decide to do when I get out of prison I should be an actor because what I did for the sake of my grandmother was an Oscar performance. This moment didn’t hit me until I was released and I visit my grandmother’s house for the first time being very free and her not being there because she died a couple of months after she visited me. THS: Which people or books have had the most influence on your career and why? CDC: There are so many people I could name and it would take pages lol. I will name some of the ones that really inspired and influenced me in my career in a dynamic way. They are Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard, ICE T, Sidney Poiter, Cicely Tyson, Michael B. Jordan, Marhersla Ali, Xzibit, Chris Evans, Will Smith, Tom Hanks, Jonathan Majors, Robert Downey Jr., Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Gemma McIlhenny, Solomon Clarke, George and Candice Dibble. Again, this is not even a third but some of my top picks. I will say Taraji and Terrence were my biggest in regards when I first got deep into acting especially with Hustle & Flow along with there testimonies before becoming 2 icons. In addition working with them and learning from them on EMPIRE will forever be THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

43

dear to my heart. Also my adopted Uncle, Uncle ICE T influence affected me in a different way because we came from the streets deeply. So following him and absorbing his journey helped me alot as well. Uncle ICE T is another icon and hip hop legend as well as Xzibit who I definitely was blessed by. Playing one of his main goons on EMPIRE for 2 seasons definitely elevated my acting career and the wisdom he poured into me was amazing. His testimony as well blessed me because he came from the streets as well like Uncle ICE and look at him now. THS: In your opinion, what would you say is the #1 key to success? CDC: I will say it’s 3 words that is together number 1. Faith, consistency and working hard. THS: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? CDC: I really had no biggest failures. I thought i failed when I

went to prison but it was a testimony that had to be told. I thought every time I was told no or when I didn’t get a role was a failure but it wasn’t. It was stepping stones to my big YES. The biggest failure for me would be if I give up and that’s something I will not do because I love my circle to much and most importantly I love God the most and He gets the glory. THS: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? CDC: That goes back to what the keys of success. Faith, consistency and working hard. In addition always put God first and give Him the glory. You can’t reach your supreme level of purpose without doing so. Also don’t put power into haters and negativity. Put it in your supporters/fans and positive energy. Let people hate while you elevate. THS: What does a typical day in your week look like? CDC: It’s never typical lol in no way. That’s why in this business you can’t get ready, you have to stay ready. I will say amongst my crazy schedule I stay working out, spending time with my daughter and those I love, study my craft and always give God His time. THS: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? CDC: God and my circle. THS: You are known for your work in the TV Series, “Empire”. How has your role helped you as an actor? CDC: EMPIRE will always be a prime time and a historical hit show for ever so being a part of that legacy will always bless my career. In addition I learned so much from so many icons at once who was a part of this phenomenal series. Taraji P. Hen son, Terrence Howard, Forest Whitaker, Xzibit, Phylicia Rashad, Taye Diggs and so many others. THS: Your “Volkov Origins” family just won a Telly Award. Tell us what this award means to you. CDC: It means the world to me because the journey we have been on especially the OG’s since day 1 as our boss man and my great brother George calls us, is definitely our biggest accomplishment thus far. I love my entire Volkov and Elysium Productions family and when we win, we win together. It’s still seems like a dream, however God made it come true as we give Him the glory! T THS: What is a non-acting related thing or experience that has helped you become a better actor? CDC: My testimony as a whole because life experiences can elevate your skillset as an actor indirectly as well as directly.

44 THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

THS: What projects are you currently working on? (That you can talk about). CDC: There are 3 I can’t talk about but when I can you will be one of the first to know. HS: If you could work with any actor or actress, who would it be and why? CDC: List is too long lol. I would definitely want to work with Taraji and Terrence again because of my connection with them in regards of inspiring me since I entered the world of acting. But the previous list of people I named as my influencer are my top picks to work with. THS: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? CDC: Yes....I’m an imperfect man that still sins, but God is working on me and I’m becoming a better man everyday. Now, I know whomever is reading this response is like this is bold and unexpected, but no one on this planet is perfect nor sin free. Acting is my career not my lifestyle. The real Charles D. Clark is human. The real Charles D. Clark deals with pain, anxiety, sometimes depression and all other attacks from the enemy. But, one thing for sure I’m real, I will fight to the death for those I love and I strive to be a better man everyday while giving God the glory, because I love Him with everything in my heart and soul. For that I will continue to elevate, change lives globally and fulfill my purpose, until God calls me home.

It was one of those places where all your food is stuffed in a bag. You also had to be like a baby and wear a bib. I thought to myself, this should be interesting. You had several choices to choose from. My choice was the Red crab special #2, with crab legs, potatoes sausage and shrimp. It was so good and flavorful. I savored every bite. I also tried the Mini appetizer crab cakes & boom boom shrimp. Everything had a specific flavor that out beats any seafood boil I’ve ever had!
