Letter from the Founder and CEO This year has been unprecedented and full of disbelief and tragedy. Although we all were impacted in some way—whether setback, loss, or hardship—2020 allowed each individual to self-reflect and appreciate the gift of life. God continues to provide and watch over us. As we accept our new normal and impart positive light to those around us, I am hoping that the launch of The Heat Seekers Magazine will help to bring positive vibes to everyone. As the Founder and CEO of this publication, I want 2021 to be a year of reflection and positivity. As you read each article on how each artist has made it through the trials of 2020, congratulate and appreciate their willingness to overcome. I will call 2021 our “new beginning.” As we begin the process of healing, restoring, and evaluating all around us, let’s remember to still celebrate one another. Without God, this magazine would not be possible. Without hope, I would have stopped midway in the year. Without courage, I would have dropped everything and settled for second-best. Instead, I decided to use my gift of spreading joy and love and compress it into colorful pages and images of individuals that I honor and adore. Thanks for joining me on this new journey of journalism; I wish you peace, happiness, joy, and prosperity for 2021. Remember: “Quitters never overcome, and overcomes never quit!” Blessings to all of you!

Not Just for Laughs Interview by David R. Navarro

David R. Navarro: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Eryn Bent: I am an independent singer-songwriter based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. I was born and raised in small-town Central Montana and have been in the New Mexico area for almost 10 years now. DN: How long have you been a performing artist? EB: I started performing at age 14 in local community theater productions, and then started performing at my own gigs at local coffee shops and local events at 17, so it all really started at age 13-14. DN: What made you decide to be serious about music? EB: I’ve always known that music was my ultimate passion, singing was my escape from a very young age. When I had just entered 8th grade, at about age 13, my mom one day asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up. Without hesitation, I said I wanted to be a singer. She put me in voice lessons that next week, and after I started instruction with Lisa Carman, I fell in love with training my voice and being as serious about it as possible. While I did start writing my own tunes at 15, I studied classically through high school, and then studied opera at the University of Idaho. Over time, I realized I was much more serious and passionate about my own music than about performing opera or theater, and when I finally moved to New Mexico ten years ago it was with serious intent to focus on my own music and music career. DN: Which people or books have had the most influence on your music career and why? EB: Jewel was absolutely my primary influence and inspiration when I started writing at 15, and she’s still a huge inspiration to me today. I was really inspired at a young age by female singer-songwriters: Sarah MacLachlan, Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow. I also had classical influences - The Phantom of the Opera is what really led me to fall in love with learning how to sing. My very first voice lesson, I was asked to bring CDs of music I wanted to learn, so of course, I had N’Sync’s “No Strings Attached” and I think, a Faith Hill CD with me. Lisa warmed me up a bit, had me sing, and then sent me home with a cassette of Phantom. I listened to it that night and was obsessed. In my later years, I find my tunes are influenced by some of my favorite artists - Alison Kraus, Dierks Bentley, Nickel Creek, Anderson East, Kacey Musgraves, Old Dominion. My sound has turned a bit more country with this latest album, but I take influence from almost everything I listen to. DN: What would you say is the #1 key to success in the music industry? EB: Persistence. And constantly re-evaluating what “success” means to you personally as an artist, whether it be goals you accomplish, progress as a musician, growth in playing live

Photo by Les Peterson Photography @lesppeterson shows, etc. It’s easy to equate success with fame (at least for me it is), so find out what success means for you! DN: Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it? EB: In 2017, I toured for 9 months out of that year all over the west coast and midwest. The last month of that tour was not as well planned as I had wanted it to be, and while I wouldn’t call the whole month a failure, I had the most gig cancellations that month than in any other year or time in my career. I barely made it back to New Mexico after my last gig in Bellevue, Washington, and remember being glad the tour was over but disappointed it wasn’t what I thought or wanted it to be. What I did learn from that experience is just how hard constant touring can be - especially as an independent artist - and how important contracts are when playing gigs. I could have been way more prepared mental and physically for the last leg of that tour, and if I had secured contracts, the cancellations would

Top left photo by Jessica Preston Photography & Design, Top right photo by Osterholtz Photography @osterholtz either not have happened or I could have been clearly aware of the conditions surrounding the show and cancellations. It taught me to level up a bit when it comes to securing contracts and touring out of state. There’s certainly no shame in asking for what you deserve and for asking for it in writing. My tours since that experience have been much more enjoyable! DN: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? EB: Keep your goals in mind, reassess them when needed and be diligent and professional in your musical pursuit. Your journey is YOURS - it’s very easy to compare yourself to other artists, I struggled with that for a period of time. Finally accepting that my path will not look like anyone else’s because it is MY PATH - was very freeing. DN: What does a typical day in your week look like? EB: I try to wake up as early as possible, which is usually 7am or a little later if I played a show the night previous. My mornings consist of checking and returning emails, checking and maintaining my social media platforms/website, and taking my 11-year-old Pomeranian Chihuahua Bailee to the park. And generally lots of coffee. And true crime television in the background. I try to get the “business” related computer work done in the mornings, and if I’m gigging that night I’ll get prepped for that show in the afternoon. If I get the night off, I usually take a bit of a break, workout, something away from the computer. I’ve been writing a lot more lately now that we’ve wrapped production on the latest album. I’d say each day is a balance between computer/social media work, creating and performing.

DN: What keeps you going when things get tough in the business? EB: Rest. During the pandemic, I saw something on a mental health site that said: Take your rest as seriously as you take your hustle. It hit me, because rest is possibly the thing I do the very least of, but it’s so incredibly true. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and run-down booking and playing music constantly, so scheduling in rest and self care and being able to recognize burnout in myself is really what gets me through the toughest times. DN: What’s next for you? New music? EB: Yes! I’ve been working on my 11-track album “Red” over the last four years and just announced the release/pre-order date for the full album: October 1st for pre-order and October 29th for the official release on all platforms. This is the longest amount of time I’ve taken on a recording project, and I couldn’t be more proud of the album. I had much more patience and planning with the production and recording on this record, it’s a very deliberate effort that was sculpted over time. DN: Please list your website and/or your social media platforms. EB: Official Website: erynbentmusic.com Facebook: Facebook.com/ErynBentMusic Instagram: @erynbentmusic Twitter: @eryn_bent TikTok: @Eryn Bent DN: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you? EB: The next single from “Red” will be released October 1st!

The Power of Faith Interview by Teresa B. Howell Teresa B. Howell: Who is J. Locke? J.Locke: J.Locke is a student of the culture. I am a writer as well as an artist and a business man. I live to create and I evolve to remain. TBH: When entering the music industry, did you start with gospel rap or did it evolve? JL: Lol! No, I did not. Well than again, I did. I played drums as a kid in church which was my first music love. As far as the music industry, it was most def secular. TBH: What would you consider the genre of your music? JL: I have a name for my music. I call it HipGosp which is a hybrid between hip Hop and Gospel music. TBH: When did you become serious about making songs for God? JL: I think it has always been there. You cannot be touched by God at any point in your life and not feel his presence in some way.. TBH: What are your future plans with music? JL: My future plans is to push the culture forward. Music has been creatively at a stand still. It’s time for people to be inspired again. TBH: Have you worked with other Gospel Artists before? JL: I have written and produced for other artists. We have a lot of music coming out later this year from many of those artists. TBH: What event in your life made you decide to pursue music? JL: This sounds familiar when I say this, but in this case it is true. Music really found me. It was something that was natural. It was something I did not have to think about, but later became one of the ways in which God spoke to me and also became a form of ministry. TBH: Who has been the most influential for your music career and why? JL: I get inspired by everything. I learn from everything. I can’t credit any one artist, because there is so much talent in this world.. in my career now, I just want to help people heal with my music. I want us better. That is the current driving inspiration.

10

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

TBH: Tell us about the good and bad experiences in the industry? JL: This gospel industry is worse than the secular industry. Lol wheat and tares are both present and it’s hard to tell who is who. Really have to bed lead. TBH: Have you experienced concert life yet? If so...how many times can you recall hitting the stage? JL: I’ve been blessed to perform all over the country. Again that is a natural place for me. I belong in front of the people.. that’s the beauty of sharing on this platform. I look forward to bringing the band out and just giving people fresh energy. TBH: Name some of the cities you have toured in? JL: St Louis, Kansas City, New York, ATL, Savannah, Cincinnati, Houston to name a few. TBH: What advice can you give new artists who want to follow in the group’s footsteps? JL: Trust your instincts. Never forget why you started in the first place and never sell your soul.

SUPERSTAR KAY

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Superstar Moves

Interview by Lissha Sadler of Hardcore Grind

Intro: Superstar Kay developed a love for music at an early age when he was encouraged by his aunt to sing in church. Initially, music was just an interest, and fashion design was his passion. In 2001, he established Khyng-Jayden Productions, later signing producers Akitak (Memphis, TN) and Chase (Houston, TX). In 2012, Superstar Kay partnered with Fatima Carter to establish 937 Magazine, an online publication catered to independent artists. After a year, he decided to place 937 Magazine on hiatus and went back to focusing more on producing. To make himself more appealing as a producer, Superstar Kay began writing and donating his voice for hooks. In 2015, he opened his third studio, The Shadow Gallery, and added engineering to his resume. In late 2016, he decided it was time to emerge from behind the scenes and become a recording artist. Since 2016, Superstar Kay has released two studio albums (with the latest consisting of 60 tracks), seven playlists, and eight singles. His singles “Club Lights,” “Overtime,” and “Pilots” have received a large number of plays and positive reviews. He was named “Artist of the Week” by NapRadio.com, featured in Straight Official and NUTTS Magazines, and interviewed on several internet radio shows and podcasts. He has performed throughout his hometown of Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Indianapolis. Lissha Sadler: How would you describe your musical ear? Superstar Kay: Elite. I always try to find a different avenue for delivering songs than the average person would. I put myself into each track. LS: Where does your creativity flow? How do you avoid burning out? SK: It flows through emotion. Whatever mood I am in, there’s always music for it. I actually don’t burn out. Creating is therapeutic for me. It’s how I release. As long as I am still breathing, there is always emotion used to express everything.

put myself in the listeners’ shoes and think about what they want to hear. I strive to make music that anyone can relate to while avoiding being boxed in as an artist. LS: You are a very accomplished producer and artist. You have been the music behind many popular sounds. Tell us about the concept behind your latest release, the song? SK: With my single, Wan More Luv, I wanted to express my emotions behind love and my desire to get a person’s one hundred percent in a relationship. I gave it a reggae/island feel to add a different texture to a conversation or situation we’ve all had or desire. It adds a bounce and a different groove; I just hoped the listeners would relate to it.

LS: What was the most defining time for you? SK: Taking the stage in front of my mom, in my hometown. It was her first time seeing me perform, and it meant the world to me having my family and loved ones there to support me.

LS: There’s a heavy cost to pursuing and pulling your vision together. Who is your biggest support system throughout your journey? SK: I’m lucky enough to say that I have a lot of people in my corner rooting for me and a great team. However, I would have to say that my biggest supporter is my cousin Chaqondabeat. He’s pulled long hours with me in the studio and has been the producer behind quite a few of my tracks. He gives me honest feedback by telling me what works and what doesn’t.

LS: Tell us about the vision behind your music? SK: I always aim to deliver the best product possible. I try to

LS: How do you think COVID has affected the music industry? SK: COVID has affected the music industry tremendously. It THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

has forced people to go more digital/virtual than what was initially intended, and it’s boosted a lot of sales due to people wanting an outlet and entertainment. It has also given artists a lot of time to get more work done at home while forcing more creative efforts to marketing and reaching fans. It has its benefits, but it has also put a dent in artists being able to go out and perform. LS: You inspire so many in the music industry. How does that make you feel? SK: It makes me feel solid. I feel honored knowing that people look at me in that way. I still see myself as a kid for the most part, and for others to look at me that way does a lot for me. LS: If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be? SK: I would delete streams altogether and force people to go back to buying discs or hard copy mediums. LS: What advice do you have for aspiring producers and artists? SK: Don’t stop! Music is timeless. You’re not getting too old for it. If your competition is giving one hundred percent, then you give a thousand. Keep chasing your dreams. LS: What is next for Superstar Kay? What will your top priorities be moving forward in your career and brand? SK: My priorities are the same: to deliver the best music possible to my listeners and fans. Next, I plan to get back on stage and deliver powerful performances with some guest features. There may or may not be an album in the works. We’ll see. https://linktr.ee/TheRealSuperstarKay

The Amen Corner-Vol8 by Nayomi Charnelle

The first words of the song speaks about God’s Love. It describes how much He loves us unconditionally and it’s a love that man can never change or provide. So many of us are always seeking love and approval from man. The one thing that I’ve learned is that man will always disappoint. Sometimes it’s intentional and sometimes it’s not. When we hear about the love of God, it’s hard to fathom there is someone who loves is no matter what we do or go through. When I first heard the song, tears flowed and I felt a certain kind of peace. It was the kind of peace that reminded me that matter how many times I mess up and matter how many mistakes I make, God is there to pick me up, dust me off and help me try again. The lyrics also remind us, if God watches every sparrow, how much more does He love us? If He will make sure the little birds eat, He will make sure that His children eat. We serve a magnificent God. “Jirah” is a clear reminder of that.

Flo of Pictures Interview by Teresa B. Howell

Teresa B. Howell: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Flo Siemsen: I was born and raised on Long Island, New York for 50 years, before moving to South Carolina 6 years ago. I’ve had 2 other major careers before doing what I was meant to do, photography! I worked with horses for 10 years before going back to college and receiving my Licensed for Massage Therapy, which I did for 22 years. In 2012 I was laid off from my job and my husband wanted to cheer me up and bought me a beautiful Nikon D3100 camera because he knew I loved photography. Well, that totally changed my life and I have been taking pictures ever since! TBH: How long have you been an artist? FS: From a very young age, I was always drawn to art and photography. At the age of 46, when I was gifted a new Nikon camera, I have been a professional photographer for almost 10 years now! TBH: What made you decide to be serious about creating art? Who are your major influences? FS: After about 3 years of getting really into photography, I started getting noticed. My photo’s have been featured in Galleries, TV, Major Newspaper and Magazines, which led me to be named one of the “Top 50 Females Photographers of Long Island” in 2015. That’s when I knew I should continue doing what I truly love! There are so many influencer’s but I remember when I was a kid, I always was drawn to Annie Leibovitz work. She does what I love to do with my photography, make it look like artwork. When I started taking photography seriously, I always loved the American Photographer Art Wolfe work. I even had the honor of Art Wolfe going to my photography page and telling me that my work was impressive! TBH: What would you say is the #1 key to success with art creation? FS: The key to success is to be your authentic self! For when someone looks at my work, I want them to be able to recognize my work immediately! Put your own signature style on your work! TBH: What projects are you working on now? FS: Well, the Fall season is upon us, so I have a lot of photo shoots lined up! Everyone loves colorful backgrounds. For myself, I will be going up to the Blue Ridge Mountains to capture the beautiful foliage…I have a lot of clients that love my personal collection.

TBH: Does your artistry come from a place of passion or a place of necessity? FS: It has always been a place of passion! Since I was very young, I was always drawing and always admiring all the pictures in magazines! I saw myself taking pictures for the longest time and now I am doing it! Plus, I still draw and paint also! LOL TBH: What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? FS: You are never too old to pursue your dreams! Never let anyone get in the way of your destiny! TBH: How can others get involved or sponsor your business? FS: Photography is a very expensive field, so supporting the love of photography is always greatly appreciated! Anyone can support my work by donating to Cash App $FloSiemsen. I am gearing up to take it to another level which require better technology. I just bought a beautiful new Nikon camera, now I just need to upgrade my computer! The goal is to do fantasy photography, like Annie Liebovitz! Letting others know about my work is the best way to help put it out there. Just tell them to go to www.facebook.com/FLOofPICTURES to see all my work. Sponsorship would boost my work so much! I love creating memories that will last a lifetime! My motto is “Every picture tells a story...Let me help tell your story!” THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

17

TBH: Any upcoming events can you talk about? FS: Nothing on the agenda right now. Will let you all know when everything is set in stone! TBH: Gives us info about each painting or creation? FS: The beautiful sunrise is from my home on Long Island. I was blessed to have this view for 50 years! I saturated it to bring out those beautiful, vibrant colors! The black and white picture of the hands is actually my cousins. They are the 3rd and 4th generations in my family. The sunflower and butterfly were a pleasant surprise! I wasn’t there more than 5 minutes and this beautiful Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly flew right in front of me and landed on the sunflower and this was what I was able to capture! TBH: How long does it normally take you to finish a project? FS: Each project is different. I do family photo shoots, headshots, babies, pregnancies, entertainment, venue parties, engagement, etc. It can take me a week, or it can take me 2 weeks to edit pictures. If I have a lot of photo shoots in one

week, obviously it will take longer than normal. TBH: Do you have a studio location for photography? FS: Right now, I go to different locations. I would like to own my own studio, in the near future. That is one of my goals with my photography! TBH: How long have you been in the business? FS: It will be 10 years in 4 months! I may be 56 years old, but I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon! I have too much to create still! TBH: What is your goal for your art? FS: I would love to have my work in major magazines and galleries and to have people recognize my work, without looking for my logo! PODCAST OF THE MONTH

blaCk men vent too 22

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Podcast on the Rise Interview by Teresa B. Howell

Teresa B. Howell: Tell us about the father and son due for this remarkable podcast? Johnathon Davis: My father and I have a relationship that I would say differs from the traditional “father and son” standard society sets. My pops, in all reality, is truly like my older brother and my best friend. We talk all the time just about life and the events thereof. One of our conversations just on a random summer afternoon was the leap we used to get our podcast started. We came together as father and son and within our conversation, we realized that there are so many black men not only in our city of Nashville, but in the world that don’t get a chance to vent. Black men by societal views are judged, ridiculed, and shunned not only due to the color of their skin, but even when they are vulnerable and in need of getting something off their chest. As a duo, my father and I wanted to change that narrative by providing a safe, welcoming, and inviting platform that allows black men to vent while giving back to our community by sharing various stories and information that will help people understand the fellow black men of our city and the issues they endure that go unnoticed. TBH: Give us the demographics of your audience? JD: As of September 3rd (only a month as an active podcast), The Black Men Vent Too Podcast has received listeners from the following states/countries: Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama, Ohio, Virginia, Missouri, Washington D.C., Colorado, Illinois, California, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Florida, Maryland, Texas, New York, and North Carolina. Internationally, we have gained listener(s) from France and the United Kingdom. According to our analytics, our audience consists of 46% men, 43% female, and 10% not specified. These demographics have accumulated in only a month’s time, which encourages my pops and I because we see that there are people all across the world who truly want to hear a black man vent. Just truly a humbling experience altogether, because again, this all started with a conversation in the driveway. TBH: How long did it take you to put your idea and vision into a concrete concept? JD: We won’t admit it, but sometimes, black men can be the truest definition of procrastination. The conversation in the driveway was literally just us catching up on life events with each other; which occurred roughly about 2-3 months ago this year. We toyed back and forth with the idea of creating a podcast,

but we just didn’t know how we wanted to get it off the ground. So after about months of procrastination and just sleeping on ideas, we finally put our best foot forward, threw some prayer in there and a bit of manifesting, and here we are today. TBH: Why did you decide to focus on males only for your podcast? JD: The idea behind our podcast being strictly geared towards black males really came about when we realized that black men in general never have had a platform to get things off their chest without being judged. In my opinion, women naturally are welcomed to express their emotions. But let’s be honest, if a man cries just because life has beaten him down, what does society immediately assume? “He’s weak, real men don’t cry, dry them tears up and be a man.” We decided to focus on males only because, unlike many other areas, our foundation is strong on giving black men just an opportunity to freely express themselves and vent about their issues without having to worry about being judged. TBH: Who creates the topics being discussed? JD: My pops and I both come together and put thoughts, prayer, and ideas on the table to seek out which topic is best not only for our podcast, but for the City of Nashville. TBH: Will you continue this concept for multiple seasons? JD: Definitely. Our concept is that with every month, we will present a new season/topic. For the month of August, our topic was depression. During this month, we were able to bring on four guests (two from the millennial age group, two from the older age group) who gave us a “new school” and “old school” THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

23

TBH: Where is the location of the recording? JD: We do all of our recording at my parents house. As we grow, we will seek out audio assistance as well as a new location so that content can be crisp and provide us with ways to be better and better serve the community of Nashville. TBH: What do women have to say about your show? JD: In all reality, the feedback we have gotten from women has been very positive and informal. One of our episodes on depression was so powerful that a woman told me, “This has been long overdue and I am happy you and your dad are bold enough to stand firm on what really matters … getting to the heart of our black men”.

stance on depression and its effects in their lives. Each episode starts with the title “BMI”: an acronym that stands for body mass index. The definition of body mass index basically is representation of your internal bodily make up. For example, the title of our first episode was “BMI: Depression In A Black Man”. This tells our audience that in that episode, we will discuss the body mass index of depression in a black man. This concept of new school/old school guests and monthly topic changes gives our audience a variety of stories on the topics we choose, while keeping them on their toes to wait for the next season/topic to be released. TBH: What platforms do you use to get the word out to the public? JD: To date, we are available on the following platforms: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Anchor, Google Podcasts, Breaker, Pocketcasts, and RadioPublic. TBH: Who influences this show and why? JD: Our podcast show would not be what it is without black men being able to be vulnerable, transparent, and honest in their storytelling on our platform. Every episode we published in the month of August has given our audience a chance to hear about depression from four different viewpoints. Then there is the BMVT audience, which has grown in just a month’s time, but has also influenced us to keep going, keep positive manifestations present, while continuing to raise awareness to the struggles of black men.

24 THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Women that I have talked to even mentioned how August’s depression season allowed them to gain knowledge on the symptoms/signs of depression and what to look for if they see it in their husband, kids, or fellow male friends. On The Black Men Vent Too Podcast, we present various facts from credible resources that correlate to the stories of our guests. So with the information we presented about depression, women were appreciative and gave us praise on how it has helped them be able to better understand the black men in their lives. TBH: What advice can you give men when it comes to healing from past hurt or pain? JD: I find it interesting how this is the last question only because our next season in September will focus on “Grievance” in black men. Naturally, not only just black men, but people in general never truly take the time to grieve. So that pain and hurt from failed relationships, loss of a loved one, or a job loss can fester throughout life with no true acceptance or understanding of what has happened. My best advice to all men is that pain is replaced with time. You truly have to be patient, but also be honest with yourself. Because just when you think you’ve gotten over pain from ten years ago, there could be one miniscuel thing that sets you right back in that depressive state you experience in that exact moment. Fellas, allow time to heal whatever wound it is that you may have. Look at it like this, a band aid is used to stop the bleeding of a wound. With time, that wound becomes a scab, the scab falls off, and the natural skin is restored. Take the time to allow the wounds of your life to be treated carefully and with purpose. Don’t allow yourself to “think” you’re okay, when in all reality you’re bleeding out pain on everybody you come in contact with. Stop the bleeding, allow the wounds of your past time to heal, and step back out in the world knowing that the scar reminds you of the pain, but provides you with the confidence to know that you can make it through anything, if you try.

AUTHOR OF THE MONTH

patrick burton 28 THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Author on the Rise Interview by Teresa B. Howell

Teresa B. Howell: How did you get started writing? Patrick Burton: My writing journey began at the end of my first marriage. I was simply writing down the process of a divorce in regards of all of the emotions that I was encountering and how I planned on healing. The end result was my first book, titled “Mrs. Limbsy?” TBH: Were there any challenges when you wrote your first book? PB: My main challenge was that I didn’t know anything about writing a book. I just knew that I wanted to tell my story and that I enjoyed the creativity part of writing. The business of books presented an entirely different challenge. It’s one thing to say that I am a published author but then there is the now what part… How do I sell them? How do I find my audience? Gaining the epiphany that everyone isn’t interested in my genre or some folks don’t like to read at all. It was very intimidating and it required attitude and grind to find that “I will not give up on my gift,” mindset. TBH: Where does your creativity come from? PB: My creativity comes from my life experiences. Life is such a story in its self and I feel like I have been gifted to tell some of those stories with my twist. TBH: What are your writing techniques like? PB: My techniques go from narrative and descriptive writing. I like to take the reader on a journey by painting a picture with anger, sadness, and happiness. They get to walk in the characters shoes or think of someone who they know, just like one of my characters. TBH: Tell me a little bit more about your publishing company? PB: My publishing company is still a work in progress. My goal is to have all of my work under its umbrella at some point. At current it offers ghost writing and editorial services in addition to some knowledge of self-publishing in order to help a new author make an informed decision in regards to publishing traditional or independent. My main focus is to let anyone who dares to embark upon their gift of writing to show them how to develop their raw talent and give them a red tape free home in my publishing company. One relationship at a time…

TBH: How many books have you written so far and when can we expect your next book to be published. PB: So far, I have three books published and two unpublished. My goal is to have my fourth book,” The Black Bird with the Golden Beak,” available by the middle of November or early December of 2021. My fifth book, titled “Generational Curses,” is still in its developmental stages. TBH: As an indie writer do you face any challenges with publishing? PB: I don’t see any challenges with being an indie writer. I think it’s all positive from the view of learning opportunity and having a project that really reflects my individual creativity. There are certainly some benefits to having a large team or traditional publishing company behind you but I enjoy my freedom to be me and there is a financial security coupled with indie that is also beneficial. The availability of doing deals with large publishing companies are always optional if they become interested. I would never disregard a good partnership. TBH: What’s your take on authors supporting other authors? PB: I am always eager to support other authors. I think that it’s extremely important that we form alliances that forge business opportunities and lifelong friendships within the world that we THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

are all a part of. Anything other than that would be super counterproductive. I think that when one of use goes through a door it becomes open for the rest of us. This is not to disregard the mannerisms in which it takes to walk through the door. Know how to act in the room… TBH: Who is your favorite author and why. PB: My favorite author is Terry McMillon because she takes each character by the hand and will make the reader get absorbed into their emotions or what makes them tick. More times than not, it’s not the main character that she mesmerizes you with, which is very convincing writing. E Lynn Harris was such a great story teller. TBH: Have you won any awards during your journey of being an author? PB: No, not at this time. TBH: What advice would you give to aspiring authors wanting to write a book? PB: I would employ them to adhere to their inner self and write. Simply write. That’s the only way to really see if the actual writing is for you. This is a way to discover if you have a great story but need a ghost writer. This is how you find out if you like writing but don’t like selling books at book fairs. The first thing is to write… TBH: What do you enjoy doing on your spare time when you aren’t writing? PB: In my spare time I enjoy working out in the gym and spending time with my family. Get Lit With King Interview by King Brooks

Recently we had the opportunity to sit down with Thomas Grant Bruso and discuss his new novella ‘The Two of Us.’ So enjoy the interview and share with a friend. King Brooks: Hi Thomas, How are you? Thomas Grant Bruso: Hello. I am fine. KB: Congrats on your new novella ‘The Two of Us.’ Tell the readers about it? TGB: The story is about loss and death and faith. For the main protagonist, Cody Whitley, he struggles to find a light at the end of the tunnel. He goes through life’s motions, asking the inevitable questions, what happens when you are left alone, parentless, and with no hope of a future? All that changes when he discovers that there is life after death in the form of a complete stranger. KB: Where did the inspiration for this novella come from? TGB: The idea came to me when I was thinking about my grandmother who is no longer with us. The story isn’t about her, but the idea stemmed from that period of mourning. KB: How long did it take for you to write it? TGB: Two months and many rewrites later. KB: What kind of person is the lead character Cody Whitley? TGB: Cody is a caring, reflective, nonjudgmental man who, like many of us, is struggling to figure out the meaning of his life.

KB: What kind of dreams did you have for yourself growing up? TGB: I knew early on that I either wanted to work with animals or be a writer.

KB: When you wrote the last word, what did you do afterwards? TGB: I put it aside and started work on another story.

KB: What is your writing process? TGB: Quarantine has given me the time to devote to my writing. Since March, I’ve written four stories, three of them have found homes with small presses for which I am enormously grateful. I write between one and two thousand words daily, early in the morning and then again in the afternoon.

KB: Please give the readers a brief bio on you as a person/ author? TGB: I am book and animal lover. I am an introvert which works well for my writing. I like scary movies, too. KB: What was life like growing up? TGB: I was a child who had his nose in a book all the time. I didn’t go anywhere without a book in my hand, or book bag. I was bookish, a book nerd. I still am. Always.

32

THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

KB: What advice would you give to writers wanting to publish a book? TGB: Two things: make sure that the manuscript is polished and is edited before you send it to a publisher. Second: have confidence in yourself that you can write a book. Don’t let others–friends, family, agents, editors, publishers, other writers– tell you that you can’t do it. Stay strong.

KB: If ‘The Two of Us’ is made into a film, who would you like to play Cody Whitley and the others? Why? TGB: Tom Hardy as Cody. He is my favorite actor. Liam Hemsworth as Liam. Tommy Lee Jones as Cody’s father, Henry. That would be the perfect cast. KB: Have you started working on your next book? What is it about? TGB: I don’t like talking about the plot of an unfinished manuscript because I never know if it will materialize. But I am always writing. I have two work-in-progress novels now. Both of them are mystery, horror and romance. KB: When this life is said and done. What do you want your legacy to be? TGB: That I showed up. Life is about showing up, doing the work, and being a responsible, selfless human being. As for my writing, I’d hope that I entertained, enlightened, and engaged my readers. That I took them out of the own lives for a few hours and made them think, laugh, cry, smile. Iconic Guitarist & Songwriter Interview by Teresa B. Howell & David R. Navarro

The R&B all female funk band KLYMAXX is KLYMAXXTIC! Still going strong their music is a staple on the radio and in dance clubs around the world. Belting out hits like, “The Men All Pause” and “Meeting in the Ladies Room” the group’s name is synonymous with classic women’s anthems. Their beautiful ballad, “I Miss You”, was Billboard Magazine’s #3 song of 1986 and still to this day is played when love is in the air. Continuing into the 90’s with the #4 R&B hit, “Good Love” followed their sultry Neo-Soul groove entitled, “Private Party” showed evident that they could flow with the changing music trends. Much of the group’s success can be credited to Cheryl Cooley, Co-founder and original member. She has personally nurtured the group’s unique sound by overseeing the infusion of 80’s funk with a modern swag. Her enthusiasm and vision have transformed KLYMAXX into a leaner meaner entity producing live music that delivers dynamic vocals and uncompromised grooves. You have shared the stage with many talented artists/celebrities. Can you tell us 1 to 2 of your favorite stories? When we were on tour with Kool and the Gang back in the 80’s we had an aquatic warfare (water gun fight) during the entire tour. Klymaxx would wear toy camouflage ponchos and hats holding our high-powered water guns and standing on the side of the stage while Kool and the Gang were performing, threatening them to a water battle when we returned back to our hotel. I won’t say who won most of the battles… but I will say, “Girl Power!”. Out of all the Klymaxx songs, which is your favorite and why?? “Divas Need Love Too” because of the groove and the lyric content. Which people or books have had the most influence on your career and why? Oh my… the only books I can think of right now are all the music theory books I had to learn from in school. I love music theory and writing. But as far and any biography books, I can’t think of any. I will say my favorite book of all is, “The Power Of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale. What would you say is the #1 key to success in the music industry? Determination. Does your music come from a place of passion or a place of necessity? PASSION. Definitely, passion. What advice can you give other individuals who want to follow in your footsteps? Don’t let other people’s fears be your fears. Save and put money aside to have the freedom to follow your passion without stressing about paying bills. Don’t let anyone’s judgment of your talent be a death sentence for the greatness you can achieve. What’s an average day like for you? Morning coffee. Check my email and that usually determines my next steps of the day. Make time to practice my guitar and create when the energy of creativity expresses through me. Read, meditate and prayer. Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music? Back in the 90’s I became an electrician and I use that construction training and understanding for my home projects. I like to study metaphysics and spirituality. And THE HEAT SEEKERS MAGAZINE

Aftermath Iris Bolling

Aftermath is the highly anticipated debut novel of Iris Bolling to the mystery, suspense, and thriller playing field. She pulls out all the stops in bringing you the first book in the Nate Reigns series, Aftermath. First, let me put a disclaimer out there. This is not for the faint at heart nor is this a romantic suspense novel. Although, there may be small elements of romance, a romance novel it is not. It is a suspense, murder mystery, crime thriller through and through. Consider yourself warned and informed. Iris Bolling waste no time, nor words when it comes to Aftermath. She hits you with a headliner and wow factor in the introduction and chapter 1. It is written with Nate Reigns finding himself in the middle of a conspiracy theory with deeply embedded roots being live and in full effect threatening the safety of the government and citizens of Richmond, VA along with other major key states and cities. Nate’s next big case is fueled by the death and murder of his best friend and mentor, Commonwealth Attorney, Alex Burnett. If you know anything about detective Nate Reigns, you know that he is the best of the best and will leave no stone unturned. This case hits close to home for Nate. Afterall, it’s his mentor and best friend who has been murdered. Although the officials are trying to say that it is a murder suicide, Nate knows this is far from the truth. Plus, the preliminary evidence at the crime scene leaves Nate with a gut wrenching feeling that there is more than meets the eye. “When the Law Breaks the Law…The Consequences Can Be Deadly!” Nate is in charge of the investigation. Of course, being who he is, he is going to do what needs to be done but following the law to get answers. He is truly one to stand for what is right and for finding justice. This can be trying at times and a thin line of following the rules, especially when his life and those he loves is on the line. Blindsided by all that is at stake, he is not ready for the uncovered conspiracy that has political impact that is further up the hierarchy chain of command. If carried out it could deeply impact the country and the way of life for the world and those living in it. The more he digs, the more he finds out that this is bigger than him and reinforcement is definitely needed. Now finding who can be trusted is what adds fuel to the fire because knowing who to trust or who is a friend or foe can be deadly if chosen incorrectly. Crime thriller, suspense, and mystery fans, put on your detective hat and be sure to have your paper and pen ready. You will definitely be on your toes as you try to put together who done it, what for, and who the real target is. Trust me, no one is safe. Aftermath will have you on an emotional roller coaster as some characters have a way of pulling at your heart strings on the journey of vindication and justice. Pull up a seat, buckle in and enjoy the ride. Iris Bolling brings you the realness and authentic rawness of real world meets imagination crafted in an unprecedented manor. She dares to cross barriers and tap into untapped territories. Aftermath is an addictive and edge of your seat read. I am definitely looking forward to book two in this series and you will be too. Aftermath can be found on the website of Iris Bolling, www.irisbolling.com and on Amazon.

City of Dreams Interview by Teresa B. Howell

Teresa B. Howell: Tell us a little bit about yourself? Tyrone Bellamy: My name is Tyrone(Ty) Bellamy. Born and raised in Statesville, NC. Single father of 3. Grew up playing sports (football, wrestling, baseball). But, knew at the tender age of 5yrs old, that music was my life’s passion and it’s something I wanted to do the rest of my life. Attended NC A&T State University and Livingstone College for Music Education. TBH: How long have you been in music industry? TB: I’ve been playing 38 out of the 43yrs of my life. Started playing at 5yrs old, took over my home church music dept. at the age of 10. But I’ve officially been “Professional” for about 20yrs. TBH: Are you a part of any group or band? TB: Just to name a few artists and bands that I’ve played for include the likes of Joseph “Jojo” Gardner and Inner City Radicals for Christ/Jojo III Band, Gospel Recording Artist Nikki Ross, Doneta Dawson, Stephanie Allen-Stevenson... TBH: Is it now considered a career? TB: Yes, music takes most of my time outside of my family. TBH: What made you decide to pursue music? TB: I fell in love with music as a child listening to my father playing for people around the city. He was a well respect piano player and also just sitting under my siblings as they played different instruments. TBH: Who has the most influence on your music and why? TB: My musical tastes and influence is one that is unique. To the likes of Mozart to Beethoven, to Donny Hathaway to Stevie Wonder to Richard Smallwood to Thomas Whitfield to Art Tatum To Beegie Adair. So, it ranges from Classical to Gospel to Jazz. TBH: Were there any mistakes you’ve learned along the way? TB: Oh Gosh, some of the mistakes I’ve learned from is to always be yourself no matter what. I’ve learned to NOT try and sound like anyone else. Be uniquely you. Also, I’ve learned that TIMELINESS and BEING PREPARED is so important. Never NOT be on time for a gig or whatever you have going on and NEVER show up unprepared!

TBH: What advice can you give new artists who want to follow in your footsteps? TB: I would say ALWAYS KEEP GOD FIRST! No matter what genre you’re playing, aim to be a vessel for God and always represent Him in any situation. Find your own niche. Skill is always inevitable but make sure what you do is from the heart. BE INTEGRAL NOT ONLY WITH YOUR MUSIC, BUT IN BUSINESS AND LIFE IN GENERAL! Also its a MUST to learn the business side of music. TBH: In your opinion, what are the benefits of being an indie artist? TB: Some benefits of being an Indie Artist/Musician is you’re not being consumed or overwhelmed by the Commercialization of Mainstream Music. Indie’s also get to do more of the music they love and feel. You have more control over the sound, feel, and vibe of your artistry. TBH: What does a typical day in the studio look like for you? TB: A typical studio day for me ALWAYS starts with prayer and communion with God and asking Him to lead me with any sounds, ideas, or any concepts that I may have. Once I do that, I lock in with production and engineering and we piece together concepts then go to work from there.

Antheion Dion is a great friend who is the photographer and videographer of “Always live in Atlanta” and works with the popular radio station “106 Live Radio” Its always a pleasure to hang out in Atlanta with my good friend Antheion. Each time we get a chance to meet, he selects a restaurant and chooses my meal. (I kinda like that!) A few months ago we visited the Cascade Spice house located at 2247 Cascade Rd, Atlanta, GA 30311. It was my first experience here and the atmosphere was a cozy one with celebrity history photos on the walls and lights displayed on the patio sitting area. It was definitely a relating environment to be in. Antheion had me try the fried red snapper and it was amazing! It was crispy on the outside but so tender on the inside.
