with Kids I’m not sure my parents would agree that I’ve always loved camping, I can still hear my own complaints in my head, but I have fond memories of traveling and camping in our green VW camper van and in tents as a kid. Both a love of travel and the outdoors stemmed from this, and I want my kids to have the same chance. Last year, I upgraded my SUV to one with a tow package and finally bought a pop-up camper to make camping trips with two young kids a little more enjoyable. Creature comforts like AC, a minifridge, and running water helps immensely with relaxing and enjoying the time. A good night’s sleep when it’s 90+ degrees and not having to constantly keep up with ice gives me the energy and time to be present. The pop-up was an easy decision for me since it is relatively affordable and a breeze to tow. After the seller gave me a 20-minute overview of how it works and connected it to my car, I was off to book as many trips as I could for the summer! Maybe too many in my excitement, but we made many memories. Indeed, it can seem overwhelming, but you can make it happen and ask for help if you need it. I spend a decent amount of time watching videos and in social groups like Girl Camper and some pop-up camper groups to get tips on remodeling and maintaining the camper. Speaking of which, it’s time to get her ready for the summer! Happy Camping! l

Summer is here, and with it comes fun in the sun. It’s important that you and your family take precautions when enjoying the outdoors this summer. Sun protection Stay safe by wearing protective clothing like swim shirts and long sleeves, and don’t forget hats and sunglasses. Take advantage of the shade when possible and be especially careful to limit exposure to the sun during high-intensity hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Always use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and read labels to ensure it offers protection from UVA and UVB rays. Reapply sunscreen every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating. Babies less than six months old should avoid sun exposure and dress in long sleeves and pants with brimmed hats that cover the neck. It’s OK to apply minimal amounts of sunscreen to small areas like the face or back of their hands. In case of newborn sunburn, provide relief with cool compresses.

Heat stress Avoid heat stress during peak heat and humidity times by limiting intense exercise and activity to 15 minutes. If you are beginning a strenuous exercise program or traveling to a warmer climate, limit exercise and slowly work up your pace over a period of 10 to 14 days to get acclimated to the heat.

Maintain water intake to ensure hydration before and during prolonged physical activity. Even if your child is not feeling thirsty, follow the below guidelines every 20 minutes for water intake to avoid dehydration: • A 90-pound child needs 5 ounces of water. •A 130-pound adolescent requires 9 ounces of water. Wear lightweight clothing and only one layer of absorbent materials, promptly changing sweaty shirts in favor of dry clothing. Periods of activity in the heat should be shortened and include more frequent water breaks than other times of the year. l

Think Water Safety, Think

S.P.L.A.S.H. Summer is here, and it’s time for water fun! To enjoy the water safely, think SPLASH as a way to teach, learn, and reinforce life-saving habits:

S P L A S H

Swim Lessons Put Away Toys, Put Up Ladder Life Jackets

Adult Always Watching Shut All Gates How to Rescue

Let’s take a deeper look into the most important of these six tips. Swim Lessons: This is by far the most critical. Learning to swim is progressive with up to ten levels of learning, going from basic activities to stroke proficiency. Basic skills involve replacing fear with fun and include blowing bubbles, putting your head underwater, and floating on your back without hesitation. Once accomplished, you can work on swim strokes, each with specific steps to learn. Learning the life-saving skill of swimming comes with practice, repetition, and certified instructors providing individualized attention to progressive steps at each level. Adult Always Watching. Accidents happen in an instant, distractions are everywhere, and kids are fast. Having an established, attentive adult water watcher can help ensure children stay safe. Life Jackets. While approved floatation devices are crucial for non-skilled swimmers, they are imperative for anyone on watercraft. The shock of unexpectedly being thrown into open water may make a person unable to use swim skills. Just like seat belts, life jackets are an easy lifesaving measure. Download the SafeSplash App or visit www.safesplash.com now for individualized, small class attention and progress toward a lifetime of adventure and joy in and around water.

What is

Child Support? Both parents have an obligation to provide financial support for their child(ren). Child support is a form of support payment that the parents can agree upon or ordered by the Court or a child support referee. There are several ways you can receive child support, for example, if: • You are the parent of a minor child or have court-ordered custody of a minor child; • The minor child lives in your household; • The child is financially dependent on you; and/or • The Court has ordered child support to be paid to you. The amount each parent is to contribute is set according to support guidelines established under South Dakota law. The amount of child support a parent is obligated to pay is based on a formula. However, some deviations and abatements may apply to your particular situation. South Dakota’s child support laws do not include extraordinary medical costs, extracurricular expenses, or college costs. These costs may be additions to the basic South Dakota child support order. Child support can be complicated. An attorney can assist you in determining how much child support you are entitled to or the proper amount you should be paying. l

Save Y our Skin: May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month Living in South Dakota, I think everyone counts down the days until we can spend time outdoors, soaking in that Vitamin D. Being outside also means exposing yourself to the sun’s harmful UV rays. May is Skin Cancer Awareness month, and I have a special connection to this month because I am a melanoma survivor. At the age of 23, I was diagnosed with my first melanoma, and we found out my mom and sister both had melanoma at the same time. Since 2013, I have been diagnosed with melanoma two more times.

4. C over your skin with clothing, broad-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

There can be a hereditary factor to skin cancer; however, anyone can develop skin cancer regardless of age, gender, race, or family history. Skin cancer is America’s most common cancer, and fortunately, it is one of the most preventable! Here are some helpful tips for helping you reduce your family’s risk of skin cancer.

6. K eep newborns out of the sun. If six months or older, be sure to apply sunscreen to children. The Skin Cancer Foundation found that even one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence doubles the chances of developing melanoma later in life.

1. Find shade when the sun is at its strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. 2. Avoid sunburns. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, five sunburns more than double your risk of developing melanoma.

5. U se a minimum of SPF 30 sunscreen, apply it 30 minutes before going outdoors, and reapply every two hours after swimming or excessive sweating.

7. E xamine your skin monthly. Look for new, changing, or unusual spots (not just moles). 8. S ee a dermatologist yearly to have your skin checked. If someone in your immediate family is diagnosed with skin cancer, make an appointment right away. l

3. Avoid tanning and tanning beds; consider a UV-free tanning option. May/June 2022 | thehoodmagazine.com |

Keep Reading All Summer Long...

KEEPING YOUR FAMILY COMFORTABLE

and Earn Prizes!

It’s an Ocean of Possibilities at the Siouxland Libraries this summer! Families in the Siouxland area can participate in the 2022 free summer reading program and activities at your local library. Parents can help students avoid “the summer slide” by encouraging children to read throughout the summer. The summer reading program can be a family affair because there is a program for all ages. Age groups include Birth-5, K-5th, Teens, and Adults. The program starts on June 3, with a kick-off party at the Downtown library from 6:30-8:00 and ends on August 12. The Birth-5 program’s criteria are to read 100 books the entire summer for a prize and a raffle entry for a grand prize drawing. For the K-5th program, students are to read 100 minutes a week (20 minutes a day; 5 days a week) for the ten weeks of summer. Earn prizes along the way and a finisher’s award for reading all summer. Students will also earn raffles for our grand prize drawings, including Magnetic Tiles, Sand Art Kits, and Legos. In addition to the reading programs, the libraries have traveling programs and storytimes at various locations throughout the summer, special performers including jugglers and a kids’ musician, and visits from the Zoomobile. And it’s all FREE! A few upcoming events include: • Absolute Science – Brandon Library, June 1 at 10:30 am • Ocean in Motion – Brandon Library, June 22 at 10:30 am • Jugglers Jay & Leslie – Downtown Library, June 24 at 11 am • Children’s Musician Will Parker – Downtown Library, July 19 at 2 pm

Tips for Navigating

Teen Jobs When my kids turned 13, we opened a checking account for them with a monthly allowance to spend on things that were not a part of our family budget. Going to movies with friends, a nicer item for sports, or eating out are all things that come out of their account. While their monthly allowance is reasonable, they would like a little extra spending money like most teenagers. So, once they were old enough, they started working jobs. Here are a few things our family has implemented around teenage employment:

1. Find a job that fits with their routine. My son plays basketball, so we found a flexible job that allowed him to take those few months off so he wouldn’t be overloaded. My daughter babysits, which allows her the flexibility to take jobs as she can. 2. D ecide how to spend the paycheck. Almost every paycheck for both of my children is split 50/50 into checking and savings. Sometimes, when my son’s tips are high, he gets to keep extra for spending. 3. S chool first. Extracurriculars second. Jobs third. In our home, school is their primary job. We felt that providing them with an allowance would permit them to be free to make good choices on what to spend their money on and not feel the pressure to work all the time.

4. D on’t quit. As most adults do, ensure they give at least 2-week notice if they plan to leave the job. It teaches them a responsibility they will need as they enter adulthood. 5. C ommunicate with your employer. Ensure your child is open and honest about what a work schedule would look like with their employer. Teach them to talk to managers and discuss expectations. Being a good employee is good to learn early. 6. F inal thoughts Having a job is an excellent opportunity for kids to learn life skills and take direction from someone outside their family. It gives them a sense of freedom when they have their own money to spend and makes them (sometimes) make better decisions on how to spend their money. l There’s more advice online!
