The Indie Guide - First Edition 2020

First Edition

Editors Letter

2020 has been a strange year hasn’t it? Constantly being told to socially distance even from those we love! Complying with restrictions on how we shop, work or socialise! Will Xmas fall victim to this ‘new normal’? Not if we can can help it! Here at The Indie Guide we don’t do ‘normal’! We do unique, sustainable and inclusive, but most importantly, we’re here to support individual businesses all motivated by similarly ethical values. Most people are unaware of the existence of many individual businesses because they don’t enjoy the public exposure afforded only to larger corporations. Our goal is to play a part in redressing this imbalance by highlighting them in this and future publications. We also hope to provide an opportunity for potential stockists to reach out to our carefully selected creatives and for you, the conscious buyer, to find a more personal and unique shopping experience, safe in the knowledge that you are helping struggling artists to continue to practice and perfect their beautiful craft. If the recent UK and US elections have taught us anything it’s that each and every one of us has a voice and our opinions count. If, like us, you want to see an end to ‘fast fashion’ and hail the dawn of the ‘slow fashion’ generation, then vote with your money and help save and promote our independent businesses. Everyone featured in this, our first edition, is a hard working creative with a passion for his or her craft. With over 40 creatives featured, we have attempted to bring you an array of diverse crafts and artistic talent so that you can make this Xmas both memorable and meaningful. We hope you enjoy this guide. Let us know what you think and how best we can serve you in future publications! Happy Holidays! The Indie Team

Shop Indie This Christmas 2020 has been a difficult and testing year. Strict lockdown measures stemming from a global pandemic have seen everything we knew and had previously taken for granted replaced with a ‘new normal.’ Amongst other things, this has resulted in panic buying, leaving the most vulnerable forced to go without, as they stand between empty shelves in their local supermarket. With many countries locked down at home we took to shopping online en masse. While supermarket giants and major online department stores may have benefitted from this sudden influx, many businesses have struggled. This is especially true for small independent businesses; artists, creatives and local market stalls selling their handcrafted products.

18

When you shop small you are buying from a person; probably the very person who actually made that product. They are knowledgeable about the item you are buying, and they’ll work with you to offer and accommodate suggestions. Most importantly, they will truly care about the work, having thought through every last detail. Independent businesses are not owned or run by boards and shareholders. They do not target you with recommendations based on your browsing history, or communicate with you in the form of a live chat ‘agent’. One thing I love about independent businesses is the sense of community they bring. Whether out at your local marketplace, a small village or even online, people come together to support one another. I love the buzz of a market; it connects people who otherwise would never have met and sparks curiosity, conversations and friendships. Since starting my business I’ve become part of a wonderfully supportive network and it’s the biggest perk of the job. Small businesses are also more likely to source locally, and often from other small business owners. This means not only do you get better value for money from locally sourced, quality products and ingredients, but this helps more money stay in your area too. You might also find that customer service is their top priority. Forget the long lines in busy shops or waiting on hold to call centres. Every customer is so important to them that it’s likely you’ll receive a quality personalised service.

Small business owners don’t work a 9 to 5, they live and breathe their work. When you shop small you are buying something that has been handcrafted with care, attention to detail, and love. The makers and artists run on passion and a fire in their belly that produces works of art and unique one-of-a-kind pieces that cannot be bought anywhere else. Their work is a reflection of themselves filled with heart, happiness and soul. You are allowing someone to realise their full creative and artistic potential and do something they love. You are helping to fund innovation and ideas, and bring them to life. When you shop small you are buying a piece of their imagination, a little piece of somebody’s dream, and to me that is priceless.

I encourage you all to shop small this Christmas and support independent businesses.

My Slow Fashion Journey Supporting sustainable and independent businesses for me is now a no brainer, but it hasn’t always been the case. I was woken up from a fast fashion haze back in 2015, whilst I was up to my neck in throwaway Primark hauls and obsessing over fashion trends like my life depended on it. I was a fashion blogger, I had a rep to up-keep and fashion was my thing, I needed to keep on top of it. How glad I am this is no longer the case! I became a blogger as a fashion related hobby whilst my kids were small, following a career as a fast fashion designer for well-known highstreet brands and running my own indie fashion upcycling business; I had already experienced contradicting sides of the fashion industry! Despite running my upcycling business (and a lack of time and support to run it) I had become, in all honesty, lazy, and as a young, skint mum, turned to fast fashion for comfort! I was taken along to a Fashion Salvage event by a friend who was already well involved in the sustainable fashion scene and ran her own label, sustainable events and upcycling workshops.

(Photo credit - Bristol Textiles Recyclers / BTR) Fashion salvaging events were popular at Bristol Textiles Recycling

30

The event took place at BTR (Bristol Textiles Recycling) which sadly due to a lack of funding, no longer exists anymore. These recycling heroes, managed to direct 20 tonnes of unwanted clothing from landfill on a daily basis. That’s right, 20 tonnes every day! That’s just in Bristol. Just imagine how much ends up in landfill each week. It’s a shocking and disturbing amount. The garments came from clothing waste bins, charity shop rejects and I can’t imagine where else… Just tonnes of garments everywhere, many pre-loved, some classic vintage pieces, designer garms and worst of all, unworn clothing with their labels still attached! What makes me feel really nauseous about those particular garments now is that most of these unworn and unloved garments were from shops like Primark and supermarket chains. Fast fashion pieces that were knocked up cheaply by under paid workers in, more often than not, shocking working conditions. Then shipped over to the UK, chucked on the shop floor with tonnes of other fast fashion nightmares and bought for just £3 a pop by us, the consumer. This means that these workers went through such hardship to produce fast fashion garments on demand, garments that never even ended up being worn – pretty much being made to go straight into the polyester landfill of doom! This is why we need to stop fast fashion and our outlook needs to change, quickly! Back to the fashion salvage event, and I’ve grabbed a whole bin liner of pre-loved garms. I couldn’t help it, I acted the same way with the pre-loved fashion as I did in a Primark Haul. It’s like getting free clothes isn’t it? Looking back, I had a problem… Why did I need all this ‘stuff ’. Don’t get me wrong, I also saw the fashion salvage event in the positive light in which it was created, to save these garments from landfill.

(Photo credit - Bristol Textiles Recyclers / BTR) Slow fashion blogger and journalist Emma Gorton-Ellicott at a BTR fashion salvage event.

The fashion salvage events invited the public to come along and search through their salvage bins for fashion gems and vintage treasures. If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty (remember it all came from clothing recycling bins) you could find some amazing pieces! I was hooked! But the shock of seeing all these wasted garms, being educated on how much is sent to landfill each week, and how unfairly the workers are treated in the fast fashion industry (an ongoing issue, even during lockdown) was just too much for me to bare. I became instantly more fashion conscious, ashamed of my obsessive consumerism and had my eyes open to a new way of living. With this fresh in my mind, my blogging style changed instantly. I ditched the high street and began to support independent, sustainable designers and businesses, which has led me to many amazing experiences; from fashion journalism to speaking at sustainable fashion events, and being inspired to start my own slow fashion business, which I am immensely proud of. Please, support slow fashion, support sustainable, support independent. Make the change.

How to Become a Slow Fashion Supporter So, what is slow fashion? As it says on the tin, it requires you to slow down on your fashion consumption. It asks you to consider what you are buying, whether you need it, and how it was made. There are several ways to support slow fashion. Firstly, stop buying into fast fashion and open your mind to buying pre-loved, vintage, and from independent designers. Obviously, you can’t go wrong with a “Chazzer” shop, loads of unique pre-loved items, with all money spent directly supporting the charity rather than lining corporate pockets; whilst creating a circular economy to reuse existing garments. Vintage boutiques are also high on the slow fashion register; independently run with unique pre-loved collections and pieces that have been lovingly curated, offering vintage and retro gems from the 1920s to the early noughties. You are literally spoilt for choice! Which is your decade? Independent fashion designers and businesses all run on small, slow fashion ranges that are carefully handmade and often bespoke, not mass produced like fast fashion. If you want a unique item, the independent designer is your friend. Many also offer bespoke services personally for you; plus, you will also have a warm feeling that you are supporting indie businesses. Good for you!

48

Online platforms like Depop, which is gaining a reputation as a hardcore seller’s paradise, offer private sellers and indie businesses opportunities to sell vintage, pre-loved and independent fashion over brand-new fast fashion items. Which is a good thing. (Follow Depop Drama on Instagram!) Well, now we know what slow fashion is, what exactly is fast fashion? A colleague asked me this question the other day, even though I’ve been banging on about it the whole four years I’ve known them – Aaargh!! But at last they are now listening! We are getting through! Fast fashion is anything that is mass produced; its fashion drops, new collections, the latest big trend, BooHoo, Primark, supermarket brands, Topshop, crazy low priced online fashion platforms... The list goes on. Even our beloved M&S, despite their attempts to be as transparent as possible, will still over produce and fill their shops with new lines dropping on a weekly basis. Do you think they sell every garment? What do you think happens to the unwanted clothing??? Hello, landfill! This is all fast fashion! How can you become more fashion conscious? Consider how much the fashion items cost in the first place, if its cheap as chips you can bet it didn’t get to the shops sustainably and ethically. Cheap garments = poorly paid workers. If that top cost you £3, how much do you think the worker got to make it? What was their cut? It’s not good is it?

It may seem harder to support independent businesses at this time, especially in lockdown situations, but nearly all independent businesses sell online. From indie shops to virtual markets and clothes swaps. Everything is available if you look for it. Did you know you can send a DM on instagram to most small indie fashion businesses to buy or enquire? And remember those links in bios for an instant indie shop hit! Indie supporters like Bristol Markets and Indie Roller also have virtual markets on Instagram that you can drop into by viewing their stories. These markets often happen on a certain day and time with links to lots of indie sellers who are often offering discounts too, all from the comfort of your sofa! What’s not to like here? Another big tip is to stop following fashion trends. Why are you following trends? Do you really need the next big thing? Will it change your life? Will it make you feel better and for how long? With everything being so instant in our digital world, trends can change quicker than you can press ‘like’ on Instagram. By the time you’ve got the ‘next big thing’ and photographed it to show your followers, Instagram has moved on… Don’t be pulled in by consumerism, you really don’t have to Buy, Buy, Buy! Slow down, be unique, have your own fashion vibe.

Buy from independent makers. Yes, their garments cost more than Primark’s, of course they do, they have been handmade with care on small, often unique fashion runs. Pay them for their worth, support them, make a change, be that change. Are you still shopping for fashion items regularly? Why? Have you nothing to wear at all? Stop scrolling, delete those persuasive ‘buy it now’ emails from your inbox, unfollow fast fashion and its influencers on social media. Just take a step back. Think about the planet and the waste and the suffering that fast fashion supports. I realise how hard it is to make the change with so many temptations around you. The government is currently bigging up supporting small businesses but are still allowing billboard posters and buses to advertise fast fashion main offenders like Boo Hoo all over the country, whilst our indies are struggling!! It makes no sense at all! Did you know Boo Hoo have refused to share information on their manufacturing processes, including where their items are made and what conditions their workers are in? Like many other fast fashion corporates, they were still demanding garments from their workers during the pandemic lockdown! By refusing to talk to sustainable and ethical organisations like Labour Behind the Label and Fashion Revolution, Boo Hoo are unwilling to, at the very least, become transparent and let their customers know what is going on behind closed doors. It should become illegal to refuse such basic requests on sustainability and transparency. Companies like this should be boycotted from advertising at all. Sadly, at the moment this is not the case, so they can carry on their merry fast fashion way, whilst garment workers and small businesses continue to suffer.

Emma Gorton-Ellicott Fashion Blogger at No-Debutante Founder of slow fashion brand Fruit Salad www.no-debutante.blogspot.com

Established in 2011, we have been handpicking innovative artists and designers from Bristol and nearby to showcase their products in our store and online. We’re a small but dedicated operation that love working with new and exciting talent, no matter their creative background, whether it be the written word, art, fashion or jewellery.

Why it’s important to shop indie! It’s vital to support independent now more than ever. When you’re buying from independents, you’re not just supporting the makers, you’re supporting a whole family or team behind the work who will be forever grateful for the helping hand and attention. It’s really special when you see something genuinely unique that has been created with such love, and we think that feeling should be harnessed and shared as much as possible. It’s so important to keep supporting those around you who are trying their best to succeed, particularly in such difficult times in retail.

Why Ethical Fashion? I would ask, why not? In the last few years, we have read, heard and talked a lot about how bad “fast fashion” is, and how important it is to support “ethical fashion.” That’s because it has a huge impact on us even if we don’t see it. When I was at university, for my final exam I decided to create a sustainable fashion guide for the city I was living in at the time, Milan. In that period fast fashion was actually the trend and we were all buying new clothing every week. I remember spending hours in shops trying on so many things, constantly trying new styles, and in the end getting the same t-shirt in three different colours. All of this because it was cheap and “normal”. I was caught for many years in a cycle of consumerism, never thinking of the negative effects of my excessive, compulsive shopping.

64

When I started researching what goes on behind the scenes in fashion, I was shocked to discover how the glamorous world was so lacking in basic ethics and humanity. The environmental impact, and the human cost, were staring right at me, telling me that every choice I make will have an impact — positively or negatively — on our planet and on real people. Talking about the impact of fast fashion with friends, I remember their reactions were always the same: “Eeek.” Yes, because at that time the only famous brand with a focus on sustainable fashion was Stella McCartney. Definitely not that affordable for young students. So, I concluded in my guide that the easiest option to have a sustainable wardrobe was buying VINTAGE! Sounds great, except that in Milan it wasn’t that popular yet.

There is a distinction between sustainable fashion and the “green collections” that the big fast fashion brands release yearly, encouraging us to spend money with them, whilst they underpay workers in their factories, use hazardous chemicals, and create waste on top of waste. This is called ‘green washing’ because while they make one “green collection,” they produce 51 others doing the opposite! But today we have a huge selection — both in style and price — following years of improvements in the industry (although unfortunately not yet enough), and many new brands joining the Fashion Revolution; the movement ensures full transparency and follows an ethical philosophy.

I’m referring to those brands who truly believe in ethical fashion. They are constantly researching sustainable materials, paying their workers ethically, and slowing down their production and distribution; they’re always thinking “green”. Thinking not only of themselves but of other people, and our only planet. Every time we buy something, we make a choice and we decide what we as individuals stand for, because there is a true cost behind everything, and it’s time to realise it. So yes, my question to you is still the same, WHY NOT ETHICAL FASHION?

The Future of Independents I am the designer and manager of Priormade, a contemporary homewares brand that only uses sustainable materials. I have been designing and making my products for 10 years, so when the opportunity last year (April 2019) came along to open my own retail shop I thought it would be an absolute breeze. ‘I mean, what’s the difference between selling my work at a market to selling a collection of different artists work in a building?’ I chimed. Well, it turns out quite a lot. As Priormade, I have over 30 brilliant stockists nationwide but it wasn’t until I opened Prior Shop that my appreciation of the hard work, passion and determination these businesses have, really came to light. I have to be honest, before opening my own shop I couldn’t help but think my stockists were a bit greedy and wondered what they actually did to warrant taking a proportion of the sale of the things I made. I can’t tell you how guilty and stupid I feel about that now!

92

When a retail unit became available; a place where I could sell my sustainable homewares, it also had enough space to relocate my wood workshop onsite. What an opportunity! I’d met so many wonderful responsible product designers over the last 10 years that to me, opening a shop that showcased a collection of homewares and accessories that are made with such care and intent, was a no brainer. My plan; to carefully curate a space full of exceptional craftsmanship, selling sustainable products that I can confidently vouch for. I ask each artist/designer to fill out a form for transparency that they have been as responsible as they can from idea to product production. It has questions about the material, packaging, suppliers and making processes, and also to understand their business ethos. When you have a shop full of so many beautiful things, you feel so responsible. Perhaps that is also because I’m a maker and I know how deeply precious all of these pieces are that are now in my care. I am so invested in each product as if it was my own hands that made it.

This year designer/ makers are relying solely on their stockists (and online sales) to replace the markets that have been cancelled. Many industries have had to pivot at such a sharp angle that we still don’t know if we’ve done enough. The amazing positives of this year are how much indies have upped their online game, and how it’s shone the brightest of spotlights on to ‘shopping small’. Independent shops had never competed with the big faceless corporations, but this year has given us the confidence to shout louder. We may be a tiny shop in an ‘up-and-coming’ area, but yes, we can ship worldwide, yes, we will give you a better service, and you know what, yes, you will receive a far better product. There are no local boundaries now to independent shopping. There has been a growing movement to shop with soul, to purchase mindfully, to buy less and buy better. The pandemic this year has supercharged this movement and God am I excited for the future of independents!

As the first lock down hit in March 2020, I knew it was the perfect time for the Indie Business Awards, an idea that had been kicking about for a while, to become a reality. Physical craft fairs were cancelled and huge chunks of income disappeared. I knew it was the right time to get it set up to show support and recognise all the indie, small, and micro businesses out there. I got a little team of indie business owners together and we went for it! Now 9 months on we have almost 3000 followers on Instagram, a website, and have given out 6 awards! We have so much planned for 2021! I’m currently running the awards myself as my little team slowly gets back to reality from lock down but I never feel alone; I’ve got a whole gang of helpers and friends right in my phone!

Our awards run monthly, and are nominated and voted for by indie business supporters. They tag their favourite businesses on the nomination grid post and, with a different category each month, we see a huge selection of indie businesses and try to shout about them all. We get guest judges involved who range from indie business owners themselves to influencers who strongly support independent business. They help with selecting the finalists using our criteria to ensure its fair and unbiased, then we have a week of shouting about the finalists, meeting the makers, and really showcasing their businesses while rallying supporters to vote for them. We use social media, linking with other groups, meet the owner interviews, grid take-overs, competitions, and our seasonal gift guides to showcase the talent in the indie business world. We want to help display the value in indie business products and show that for every mass-produced product you buy, there is a lovingly made indie alternative. We want to gather a whole army of people proud to be indie business supporters.

Shopping independent matters because it’s not corporate and faceless, nor is it coming from a place of “make as much money as you can and screw everything else.” It’s passion, morals and love, and an indie business owner obsessing over little details to make their product perfect. It’s the dedication and love shown by these one person bands doing everything themselves and loving it, because it’s providing for their families and giving them an outlet for the amazing skill and talent they have. It’s the community they have built on social media and in real life. These people show up for each other all the time. You don’t get that anywhere else. It’s infectious and it’s beautiful. How could you not want to be part of that? #SHOPINDIEBUYLOVE #SHOUTINDIEBIZ

Who We Are Samantha Hamlin is the founder of WITH LOLA and Chief Editor for The Indie Guide. After graduating in Fine Art at university, Sam found herself searching for opportunities within the arts. Looking endlessly for inspiration and constantly facing hurdles, she went through all the motions of wanting to start a business and felt completely out of her depth. After many failed business attempts and loose ends, WITH LOLA was born. A platform which raises the profile of creatives starting on their business journey, whether it be a side hustle or a fulltime project. WITH LOLA features weekly interviews, blog posts and projects which support the creative sector. Throughout her career, Sam has worked with many International Festivals, Art Events and Fortune 500 companies around the world. She has a true passion for innovation, supporting creativity and cheerleading the next generation of business owners!

Evie Daines is the Collaborative Editor of The Indie Guide and the founder of the independent brand Daines Atelier. Upon starting her business, she noticed the lack of support and understanding from the community around her. This gave her the drive to show and teach others the importance of investing in the talented creatives around them. Rather than the big dogs. She is focused on the communication between brand and stockist, educating those who have a voice to represent the importance of indie retailers in climates such as todays. A lover of sustainable practice and transparency in a brand is something which Evie believes makes shopping Independent magical. Yousef Al Nasser is a fashion, portraiture, and lifestyle photographer from Kuwait with a 10-year background in commercial photography. Always ready to apply a variety of creative approaches to capture images that will best meet clients’ wishes. With an MFA in Fine Art Photography and a passion for street photography, Yousef’s attention to detail and love for creating “candidly composed” images is a running theme in his work. His commercial work has been published in multiple issues of Kuwait’s number one English magazine, and in the United Kingdom he has been published in The Economist, The Telegraph, The Guardian and Vice. Now, entering the world of magazines and graphic design, Yousef is the Creative Director of The Indie Guide!
