Culture Club Superintendents of unturned inspiration, these leaders of Australian hairdressing reveal the culture cultivating autumn 2011 trend predictions.
E
STETICA prompted each visionary with the following questions: 1. W hat country or culture have you drawn the most inspiration from when formulating hair design trends and why? 2. W hat trends emerged from the influence of this country/trend? 3. W hat country/culture is influencing your trend predictions for autumn/winter 2011 and how – what abstract and commercial elements of the culture are inspiring you? The colours and cut of a kimono? Amalgamation of trends synonymous with Australia? The stars and stripes of the American flag or the bohemian nature embedded in Bali?
Fudge Lores Giglio, Fudge Creative Director
1. Over the last few years I have been working out of Milan and Paris for fashion week where the influence is overwhelming. The environment to create and to be inspired surrounds me every time I’m in Europe. When I am formatting hair techniques or looks I usually combine bits and pieces I see backstage at the shows with the more urban looks I see on the street.
I rework these combinations when I get back to Australia and adapt it to the current fashion we have here. Although Europe is a season ahead, I don’t like to jump into the pending season too quickly, it’s best to create a seamless transition. It tells a fashion story in a coherent way. 2. Shaggy hair with a salty texture has a huge presence in editorial hair at the moment. Most of the big European fashion houses are shooting in places further to the east of Europe like Croatia and Turkey. I love the polished glamour of Western Europe fused with the more earthy organic feel of Eastern Europe. It’s bringing the best of Europe together without necessarily labelling the look to a region or country, it’s quite diverse. 3. A utumn/Winter 2011 will be more abstract than previous seasons. The fusion of techniques will have few boundaries. The contrasts will be blended with all forms of creative input – make–up will be soft and subtle so to allow stronger colours throughout fashion and hair to add dimension to a frame. With hair remaining loose and unstructured, I see inspiration coming from more untreated

areas of the world. Places like Bhutan and Tibet the perfect example, using bright colors in clothing, and more unstructured hair. Lots of the International fashion magazines are using places like Bhutan and Damascus to shoot these looks. There is nowhere else in the world where these cultural influences are so strong and pure.
Wella Frank Apostolopoulos, Wella Brand Ambassador and BIBA Creative Director
1. The UK is the most inspiring country for me. I find the culture diverse and respect the underground vein resonating through fashion, hair and music. I love visiting London and exploring the extremes on the streets – to me it’s one of the edgiest cities in the world. I aspire to follow the boundary pushing ethics of English fashion designers fearless of outlandish catwalk parades. 2. 1960s inspired shapes emerged from the UK last season – Miu Miu’s campaign summing it all up with some amazing 1960s style.

3. This year I feel my biggest inspiration is coming from my home – Australia. I’m influenced by the streets of Melbourne and how there are so many takes and variations to the bob and pixie shaped cuts. At the moment I’m loving the feeling of chopped up, almost ‘wiggy’ looking hair. Nothing too sharp, it’s raw and irrefutably cool.
La Biosthetique Lee Cohen, Director, Reds Salon & Spa
1. The LA BIOSTHETIQUE autumn and winter 2011 Trend collection draws inspiration from the ever changing city of Berlin. The International Artistic Team visited the capital in search of women, their fashion and their attitude to city life – a city that was once so cosmopolitan before falling into a deep sleep with the erection of the wall of Berlin in 1961. Now in the process of evolution and rediscovery, the coming down of the Berlin wall has created a motivation and a direction in the city for so many designers, artists. 2. The looks reflect the major periods in Berlin’s history. Rounded shape and short fringe recall the 1960s – a cropped look that’s both stylish and cool. This graphic and almost androgynous design becomes more interesting and
extravagant with its playful styling variations. The Berlin club and art scene comes to mind. The blonde has a new dimension with transparent reflexes and smoky graduations down to the brightest blonde. 3. Curls are a hot topic in autumn/ winter 2011, whether combed out or styled. The look portrays an image of the young, creative avant garde scene in Berlin throughout the 1990s. Subtle graduation encourages bounce and enhanced volume. Blonde hair is soft and harmonious, almost playful and child-like – reminiscent of Berlin after the fall of the Wall, the time of discovery, and the desire for something new.

1. I am inspired by the French – when creating collections I am drawn to the culture’s endless sophistication and always soft and feminine style. 2. I appreciate how the French strive to embody personalised style and grace before trends. I salute French culture through tailored hair design structured with complimenting, soft feminine features. 3. The cosmopolitan lifestyle twisted with the elegant grace of the French will definitely be a feature in autumn/winter 2011.
Danielle Blakeley, Yoshiko Hair, St Kilda
1. I draw great Inspiration from Germany – in particular the Film Noir genre of the 1920s; an era of darkness with roots in German expressionism. 2. An era defined by symbolism, classic horror films and detailed sets inspired strong shapes with bold attributes to empower beauty in a period of restriction and financial hardship in Germany. 3. Once again the epicenter of ‘cool,’ Berlin will influence autumn/winter 2011 hair design promoting strong shapes and sexy overtones of femininity – a design direction currently emerging throughout European fashion.

1. England, especially London and Manchester. The looks coming out of the UK are stylish and I love the rock and roll and Punk style attitude adopted from the incredible catalogue of Londonborn music from decades past. 2. The geometric shapes from Mark Hayes and Vidal Sassoon always have and always will set global benchmarks in hair fashion. While hairstyles – like music – are continually being rediscovered and reborn. 3. Australia will move toward strong reds and dusty browns in autumn/winter 2011– a reflection of our laid back attitude to life, incorporated with hard work. Just like the history of Australia – we are experts at taking elements of distant cultures, mixing them with our surroundings and creating something fresh.
JOICO Summa Knox, Joico International Team member
1. Working with the Joico International Team on the company’s latest trend collection, my recent trip to the USA proved a huge inspiration. 2. Typically traditional, the USA has been ambassador for classic shapes and colours across overall bold designs. 3. With a sister in Mumbai, I have been receiving an influx of India’s latest high-fashion publications, and love the beautiful, bright colours they showcase heavily. Originating from Sari’s, the bold palette is being worn by models and celebrities in fashion forward shapes. Lace and leather is also featuring heavily throughout these native Indian magazines – trends we will see in the coming months.

T
he often outrageous, always fabulous Fudge has once again crossed the line to start global trends. The first company in the world to gender-bend the high-fashion features of Croatian-Australian modelsensation Andrej Pejic, Fudge has sparked a frenzy currently sweeping the world’s catwalks, designhouses and high-fashion campaigns. First dressed in a copper Fudge wig for the Oz Rock Reds campaign, Andrej (the 19 year old refugee from Melbourne) picked up the pace upon closing the Jean-Paul Gaultier women’s wear show dressed as a bride – complete with a mowhawk, black veil and long gloves. More recently, Pejic closed Gaultier’s menswear show as a woman and
has been snapped up and starred in the likes of Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2011 campaign. Dubbed James Blonde, the Pejic phenomenon is giving designers prone to pushing boundaries the perfect canvas to do so – ‘femiman’ is the new black, and Director of Chadwick Models Melbourne, Matthew Anderson sensed the intrigue a mile away. “Andrej was definitely a calculated risk; we really weren’t sure how it would work out. In the global financial crisis, a lot of commercial decisions were made
above creative ones and that meant the strong man, Chesty Bond-types were more likely to work,” Anderson told The Sydney Morning Herald. Nonetheless, Anderson packed up Pejic and sent him en -route to London, then Paris and Tokyo and the response continues to stupefy. The pull of this platinum poster-boy for ambiguous sexuality has touched readers across spreads stretching 16 pages in the likes of Italian VOGUE, Turkish VOGUE and VOGUE Paris – a rare occurrence not just for a male model, but talent in general. “My success in women’s editorial has definitely had a positive impact on my career overall. There are levels of high fashion that male models never really reach; to be in VOGUE can only mean good things,” Pejic told Oyster magazine. Now you know who that ‘blonde girl’ is.

The History
Makers ghd once again joined Australia’s style starlets, Sass & Bide at London Fashion Week to materialise the collection – Boogie and the Historymaker.
T
he fourth season Sass & Bide has partnered with ghd to style hair for their exclusive off-site show as part of London Fashion Week’s itinerary, creative synergy continues to grow with each instalment. A reflection of the graphic-tribal meets free-spiritedsophistication feel that pulsated from a palette including flash purple and deep coral. And an amalgamation of textures swaying from sequins to velvet and leather ‘fish scales,’ two separate hair designs unfurled to represent the collection’s clash of culture. “I call it the ‘quaff pleat,’ said Sass & Bide Hair Director and ghd Guest Artist Renya Xydis. “We used a lot of ghd products including the Fat Hair Lotion, Maximise Mousse and Ultimate Hairspray, then teased it up and rolled it into a messy French pleat which looked amazing,” said Renya.

Also on hand for the ultimate ‘spin’ on glamour was the new ghd Gold Series styler to create the hair design. The styler range, available in Classic, Max or Mini features a chic new design that is cooler to touch and lighter to handle.
Get the look:
1- Prep the hair with ghd Maximise Mousse and ghd fat Hair Lotion, and dry in 2- Starting at the back of the head, section the hair up to the crown 3- Thoroughly tease each section for a slightly messy result then smooth out with a ghd styler. For this style Renya used the ghd Gold Classic Styler 4- Brush each side of the hair back using a flat styling brush, then wrap inwards and secure with pins 5- T ake the front section of hair and brush both sides upwards then push the top slightly forward to create a quaff, while directing the hair to one side. 6- Secure the ends by wrapping the hair under on each side and pinning at the top of the head near the crown 7- Finish off with ghd Ultimate Hairspray for extra hold.
Issue
Group Now operating collaboratively alongside the world’s most reputable make-up brand, the future is bright for professional hair company, Issue Group.
L
aunched by young professionals, Oscar Villalba and Roberto Hlace in 1976 with the development and manufacture of a nail polish remover and hair-removal wax, things have come a long way for Issue Group whose interest lies in ample beauty for less. Partners Kobi Gozlan and Daniella Gozlan together boast a rich history of transformation by the art of hair and make-up design, and arrived in Australia in 2004 with European style and a penchant for affordability. Not a likely combination, but the pair were determined to make it work and, after a period of trial and error with some of the world’s ‘leading’ industry brands, they found a professional colour to make it happen. The duo’s first Australian salon opened on Melbourne’s upmarket Church Street, Brighton, and quickly made a name for itself thanks to Kobi’s heritage directing hair across international Miss World
competitions and educating at TONI&GUY London, and Daniella’s impressive ability with IL-Makiage Professional Mineral Make-up – a brand that, at the time, was highly sought after yet rare in Australia. This came as no surprise to Daniella. IL-Makiage (fondly known as a NY institution) was established in 1972 and has been widely used among professionals in film television and fashion across the United States. Leader of a fierce cult following, the likes of make-up artists Bobby Brown, Francois Nars and the late Kevin Aucoin were all trained by the owner of IL-Makiage USA; Ilana Harkavi. IL-Makiage is the front foot of make-up trends and innovations including colour options, modern touches likes shimmers, high end pigments and ingredients, and the most refined textures available. The heritage brand has touched the faces of supermodels behind the scenes of the world’s most illustrious fashion parades, and has a friend and follower in some of the most high profile people in the world - Oprah, Cher and Bette Midler among them.
16 ❘ E S T E T I C A A U S T R A L I A N E W Z E A L A N D
Eager to indulge clientele and boost their business’ profile, Daniella began importing the exclusive designer make-up into Australia. Daniella and Kobi decided to invest much deserved time into IL-Makiage, and sold their Brighton salon to concentrate on the make-up line before opening a smaller salon, Kobzim Hair and Makeup in Elsternwick, Melbourne. Expensive colour costs were not ideal, and the partners wanted to sign up with a professional hair colour capable of delivering a client experience synonymous with IL-Makiage’s company ethos of natural and mineral – industry giants were providing no solution, so Daniella and Kobi’s attention turned to the Issue Group. The Issue Group presents a complete range of quality colour, care and styling products that deliver exceptional results at an affordable price. The Issue Professional Colour range is ammonia-free and consists of an exclusive formula containing Protesil to protect hair and ensure greater softness, complete grey coverage and colouring duration. A series of market leading, ammoniafree traditional bleaching powders are on offer with a dust-free version in the mix and herbal peroxide for a cleaner, safer salon environment.

Excellence guaranteed, the Issue Professional Colour Fantastic Blond powder is enriched with linseed oleum and Omega 3 for deep repair and ample protection. The 86 shade colour chart facilitates hairstylists’ most creative whims and clients’ needs and desires. Daniella and Kobi became more satisfied with every Issue Group colour and were saving 70 per cent in colour costs. Motivated to offer other salons the opportunity to achieve fantastic results with minimum cost, Daniella and Kobi bought the company and now operate Issue Group and IL-Makiage in conjunction for the ultimate one-stop shop for hair and beauty salons. o questions about it, Hair Expo annually serves an unsurpassable tsunami of talent that leaves the industry hungry for more. Australia’s Hair Expo gala nights typically present a world-class clash of cultures and creativity – an overwhelming outlet of inspiration that arrests the senses and challenges all preconceived notions on hair. Preparing to open like no other is Aveda’s Global Creative Director, Antoinette Beenders. Miu Miu, Dolce & Gabanna and the late godfather of sinister style, Alexander McQueen have called on the vision of Beenders to aid the live conceptualisation of their collections and, with a hell reputation to live up to proceeding a Hair Expo Australia 2004 performance that saw models suspended from the ceiling in pods, thoughts of Beenders’ potential performance brings butterflies to the stomach. And that’s just on Saturday. Sunday’s Generation Next Gala will see TIGI International Creative Director, Anthony Mascolo spin heads with profound passion and creativity to match a technical ability Sassoon would salute. One of the founders of TIGI, Anthony is an entrepreneur with the vision of legends – very few personalities possess his scope of influence on both his brand and artistic direction. His reputation lies in the ability to positively unify hair and fashion across any canvas thrown his way – studios, seminars or catwalks, Mascolo will effortlessly fuse runway with avant-garde for hair design not for the faint hearted. He’s been and blasted pre-conceptions Down Under before, so the anticipation is great for what is bound to be a quintessential multi-sensory Mascolo sensation. erhaps something to do with Farouk Systems Group owner/founder, Farouk Shami’s early ventures into teaching and very much to do with a deep passion for healthy hair in all regards, this USA industry empire has been at the helm of industry innovation for 25 years with the introduction of ammoniafree colour in 1986. Farouk Systems is home to CHI Ionic Permanent Shine Hair Colour, Chi Infra Environmental Cream Color, BIOSILK, Bio Glitz and sunglitz – a series of colours that have allowed hairdressers to work in safe, clean environments for 25 years. “Pioneering the first ammonia free lightening system with Sunglitz was just the first of many advanced American technological achievements,” says Farouk Shami. “We also incorporated silk into hair care with Biosilk, developed CHI heat styling tools using moist ceramic heat and low EMF and included nano silver in CHI Nail Laquers to kill bacteria. Now we are launching new CHI Enviro American Smoothing Treatment. The 100 per cent formaldehyde free treatment will allow hairdressers to offer popular smoothing treatments and increase their earning potential,” he continues.

The range of CHI colour and supporting products has been distributed by Cliff Georgiades of ECO Hair Products since 2000. Cliff discovered the phenomenon at the World Hair Championships in 1996 before trying and testing the colour and products in his own Melbourne based salons for four years – a period of which he fell in love with the formulation and results and came on board as the sole Australian distributor, and the success has been outstanding. The celebration has begun with fantastic promotions on all ammonia free CHI colour and lighteners, and will continue throughout 2011 with big events including participation on an episode of The Celebrity Apprentice airing in the US on May 1st, the International Conference in August, Miss Universe in Sao Paul Brazil in September and other surprises. “One pioneering innovation we are implementing is our hologram program that places traceable security holograms on genuine CHI Ceramic Hairstyling Irons and CHI Hairdryers to verify authenticity and to combat counterfeiting,” says Farouk. Always leading by example in the quest for positive change – congratulations Farouk.

L’Oeil Bleu© Vente aux enchères Pierre Bergé & Associés – Arno Bani
JACKSON UNSEEN. Ten years ago, photographer Arno Bani (then 23) met the singer who passed on in 2009. Today the photos from that meeting are finally presented to the world. At an auction on 13th December, in a limited edition box set for true fans (Pierre Bergé & Associés, French and English, h1000) and at a travelling exhibition with dates in Milan, New York, Berlin and Paris. Arno Barni created four different scenes (personally requested by Jackson after having seen Bani’s work on the cover of Style). But at that time they were judged to be of little commercial value, unsuitable for the album “Invincible”, and so tucked away in the archives. But now they’re back in all their glory.... 28 ❘ E S T E T I C A A U S T R A L I A N E W Z E A L A N D

he Villas of Byron are built from a vision to indulge visitors with an authentic Balinese experience within the similarly relaxed and convenient vibe of Byron Bay. It had never been done before, and it will be a challenge to do again, as the visionaries responsible for this Cleopatra-fit hideaway have truly stretched the concept beyond your wildest beliefs. Almost farfetched and truly fantastical, no photograph will truly articulate the finesse and paranormal attention to detail that exists between the nine-foot surrounding walls of utter privacy. The experience begins with Asian influenced sunken gardens, stretches upwards into hand-crafted Balinese doors and pavilion roofs before descending to private plunge pools (equipped with a wall-bound waterfall), heated spa, outdoor rain showers, and finally a Zen garden for meditative moments. Awarded a Commercial Merit Award in the 2005 Northern Rivers Urban design Awards and a Commendation for Multi Resident Design in the 2006 RAIA NSW Country Division Awards, the Villas of Byron spring to life with C-bus lighting, pre-loaded iPod and huge plasma TV’s, and cross comfort and sustainability with heated marble floors and an eco friendly compost toilet - the largest eco friendly multi dwelling complex in Australia. Constantly invoking the trade of stress for spirituality, take a moment to breathe beneath the medieval-style net dressing each King size bed or beach on the balcony-bound day bed in provided Batik robes or silk kaftans. The pinnacle of privacy, clothes are definitely optional at the Villas of Byron, and there’s something about the space that encourages you to sit, reflect, and get-to-know yourself again.

You Beauty
Instant Rockstar recently collaborated with Horizon PR and PR Darling in the roll out of an illustrious event in support of flood relief efforts. Held on February 20th, Beauty Gives Back took place at Melbournians favourite foodie spot, FOG. Generously provided by owner Sam Frantzeskos, Beauty Gives Back proved the perfect place to get people giving. Equally entertaining and charitable, the event saw the likes of Natalie Gauci, Shirley Davis, Millie Minogue and Ms Paris enliven guests before Craig Delmo took to the decks to amplify the vibe that carried on long into the night. With big-guy sponsorship from Carlton United Brewery, Frontier Touring, GNC Livewell and 20th Century Fox, Beauty Gives Back was a true testament to the power and influence waiting to make a difference at the will of Australian hairdressing.

70 Times AHC Accredited The Australian Hairdressing Council (AHC) recently rolled out and inducted 70 salons into the new Landmark Salon Select Pilot Program. The charter involves five pillars of assessment with the core areas ranging from management and operations leadership through to marketing acumen, customer service excellence, career and training opportunities, design distinction, artistic integrity and environmental sustainability. Assessed by the likes of Suki’s Sandy Chong, the superlative 70 ranged from high-profile CBD-cultured locations including Togninis, Noddy’s on King and Wild Life Hair to the sharpest suburban and regional salons including eSALON and Plush. The idea is to further extend the positive and powerful image of the professional trade and, when paired with established inroads within key governmental departments, there’s no doubt the voice of Australian hairdressing is getting louder and prouder thanks to the AHC. Kérastase for White Ribbon
Kérastase Paris was on hand to lay luxury on the catwalk while supporting the White Ribbon campaign at the recent launch party of The Lingerie Boutique. Held at Rivers Edge Events South Wharf in Melbourne, all proceeds from tickets sold were donated to the White Ribbon campaign – an international day for the elimination of violence against women - and with Roberto Cavalli Lingerie stealing the show, proceeds were rich. Creative Director at Headline Hair, Sam Papas led a team of Kérastase stylists who successfully met the brief for sexy European glamour – the perfect finish to a parade of lingerie designs leaving collars smoking hot. “Lingerie is all about seduction and allure so the girls needed hair that was flowing and sexy with plenty of length and movement. We went for soft curls that bounced and shone when the runway lights hit,” explained Sam.
Pop Up Style
Just like some of fashion’s favourite boutique stores, Moroccanoil recently parked pop-up style along North Bondi’s shoreline armed with styling stations, ambassadors, tools and gift bags for beach babes to try their hair at. Positioned on the park at Ramsgate Avenue, the momentary Moroccanoil salon settled ocean frizz and dehydration with mini styling sessions directed by professional hairstylists from a selection of Bondi salons including Emily Brown from Summa Knox, Jessica Roberts from the Chop Shop and Ros Sakrewski from Kelp Hairdressing. Celebrity session stylist to Moroccanoil ambassadors Jen Hawkins, Natalie Imbruglia and Miranda Otto; Diane Gorgievski was on hand to assist North Bondi Italian lovers on their transition from the beach towel to the bar stool. “It was a really exciting and successful branding exercise, as not everyone who came to the salon had used or heard of Moroccanoil before and we were able to reach and educate a high volume of people in a short time,” commented Moroccanoil Brand Manager, Kayla Luck.
Style Master? Launched in 2010, Revlon Professional’s Style Masters project is designed to empower hair stylists, advocate the artistic value of hairdressers and discover and support new talents. A stellar series of products has the project well underway, and now, an international creativity contest is calling submissions from progressive hair designers for the chance to fly to Amsterdam as one of seven worldwide stylists in May 2011. The Style Masters competition asks for three photographs showcasing three different looks from one haircut on one model – each created with Style Masters products. The three shots must be uploaded to www.stylemasters.com by February 28th 2011 where over 14 countries have already registered interest.
ghd launches new stylers From the people who know heat come a new pair for premium styling – the ghd Gold Max Styler (with wider plates) and Gold Mini Styler (with thinner plates). The two genius additions to ghd’s Gold Series complete the luxurious range with something suitable for shorter hair or layers seeking loose beachy waves, controlled quiffs and fringes, and those boasting length and heavy layers. And ghd ambassador and owner of Wild Life salons, Jayne Wild is loving every moment on the salon floor and in the studio with her new favourite tools, “I thought ghd couldn’t get any better at something they have already made perfect to work with, but they have managed to reset the standard in heat styling tools with the very chic Classic, Mini and Max Gold Series Stylers. You only have to put them in your hand to feel the difference,” said Jayne. “They’re not only lighter to handle, making it easier to create more volume and movement, but they are also cooler to touch. ghd continues to deliver long lasting results, reinforcing that the ghd stylers are salons’ styling tool of choice.” Contact 1300 880 209 or visit www.ghdhair.com/au
