2022… what a year it was. While it was looking good for a while with Covid finally releasing its stranglehold/grip on Australia and the world, it wasn’t quite ready to let go just yet and it looks like it is here to stay for a while.
On top of that there was the war in Ukraine, inflation, rising interest rates and of course ongoing shipping and supply issues. However, there were also plenty of good things that happened in 2022. In our industry insights feature on page 56 we look at the good, the bad and the ugly of 2022.
In an industry first, Giftguide introduced a new annual feature, the Hot 100, giving our readers the opportunity to show some love for the hard-working businesses in the gift and homewares industry. The votes have been counted and the results are in. Check out the winners in our special Hot 100 feature on page 24.
Sustainability is no longer just a trend but a way of life with consumers and businesses choosing for eco-friendly options and products whenever they can. In our eco focus starting on page 10 we talk to Finmark director, Inga Tyler, about sustainability and why it’s important to be transparent when it comes to eco-friendly products.
A survey commissioned by zero-waste packaging retailer Hero Packaging has revealed that 79.75 per cent or almost four in five business owners are intrinsically motivated to address sustainability concerns because it aligns with their core business goals and values. Read more on page 12.

In a business that prides itself on staying ahead of the competition, Finmark is always looking ahead, but not all trends are aesthetic.
The most significant shift in the gift industry according to Finmark director, Inga Tyler, is the desire for products with legitimate sustainability credentials.
“As an owner/operator we are close to our customers,” she says.
“In 2019, we started to take note of the questions regarding the sourcing of our products and whether they were compostable and recyclable. Retailers were feeling the push of demand from the public wanting better quality products, made ethically that would last longer.”
Finmark is a family owned and managed business that has been importing high quality wrapping paper from Sweden for over 45 years.
“We have always been proud of how advanced our Swedish partners were with sustainability. Our wrapping paper is sourced from sustainably grown trees in Scandinavia and printed with renewable energy and waterbased inks. Each counter roll imported from Sweden has a unique code to trace it back to the exact forest from which it grew.”
With eco-friendly wrap sorted, Tyler turned her attention to finding embellishments and accessories to complement the papers. As the sole distributor for a premium Italian manufacturer, Finmark has a long history of importing an extensive range of poly raffia and ribbons.
Giftguide chats to Finmark director, Inga Tyler, about sustainability and why it’s important to be transparent when it comes to eco-friendly products.
“Italians are particular about quality and design, so it took many years for our partners to be 100 per cent happy with the product in terms of colour, quality and environmentally friendly production,” she explains.
Sustainable production, FSC and PEFC-certified materials have always been a starting point for the distributors in Italy, but it was now also essential for Finmark to have a distributor who could guarantee sustainable and environmentally friendly products.
In 2022, the time had finally arrived for Italy to distribute a brilliant range of eco-friendly embellishments.
Tyler jumped at the change and within one year had more than doubled Finmark’s number of eco-friendly options in ribbons and twine.
Among the new ranges included jute, paper twine, paper bands, paper raffia, cotton ribbon, cotton rope, wooden clips and linen bags.
Together with Finmark’s range of sustainable wrapping paper, over 50 per cent of its products are now fully compostable or recyclable.
Tyler says she is not only proud of the range Finmark has to offer but is thrilled in the way the products have been received.
“People want to do the right thing in terms of the environment, but often they’re not sure how to. It’s wonderful that we now have so many options available and as the demand has grown, it has allowed us to offer a diverse and quality range at an affordable price.”
Each year, Finmark’s Italian partners are developing new items that can be repurposed, recycled or reused.
With new techniques and new forms of production constantly being introduced, Finmark will continue to import these products and offer them to Australian businesses.
“It’s a gradual process, but wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a product range that is 100 per
cent recyclable? It’s definitely something that we aim towards and plan for,” Tyler enthuses.
While some products in Finmark’s range struggled through the past couple of years due to Covid, the gift wrapping and accessories range has never been stronger.
Customers are realising the importance in offering the service and how it is fundamental to building a brand and increasing customer relationships.
For over 40 years Finmark has prided itself on quality and offering something unique to Australian businesses. That focus for Finmark is still there but now there is also the added incentive of being environmentally friendly.
“We love what we do and feel fortunate to come to work every day and be surrounded by beautiful gifts. Our customers are our number one priority and we will continually strive to source further eco-friendly and sustainable options for their gift wrappings.”

Asurvey commissioned by zero-waste packaging retailer Hero Packaging has revealed that 79.75 per cent or almost four in five business owners are intrinsically motivated to address sustainability concerns because it aligns with their core business goals and values.
Though 45 per cent said their eco-consciousness was an important part of meeting consumer expectations and 55 per cent agreed sustainability initiatives helped build trust with consumers, the vast majority of the respondents used environmentally protective measures because of their own attitudes and beliefs.
Hero Packaging co-founder, Anaita Sarkar, believes the days of
customers demanding businesses to be more environmentally responsible are fast coming to an end.
“These days businesses are not only self-motivated to do their part in saving the planet, they’re also innovating many of the sustainable solutions that will carry us forward.”
Close to 94 per cent of the businesses which are based in countries like Australia, the US, Canada, New Zealand and Europe agreed that sustainability practices are ‘very important’ and ‘somewhat important’ to their customers. Roughly half of those surveyed considered sustainability to be part of their overall culture and business strategy.
In the past 12 months these
businesses have significantly improved the way they packaged their orders (65 per cent), reduced waste from operations (52 per cent) and sourced materials locally or through fair trade (48 per cent).
Over the next 12 months more than half (53 per cent) of the respondents said they intended to engage in other green practices—48 per cent resolved to reduce operational waste, 40 per cent planned to source more local and fair trade materials in their supply chain and 42 per cent sought to upgrade their packaging to be more eco-friendly.
Businesses’ concern for the environment also extended beyond their own operations to influence who they choose as their suppliers. Thirty-three per
cent of businesses said it was ‘very important’ while 29 per cent said it was ‘somewhat important’ that they work with sustainable partners throughout their supply chain.
“Customers have transformed the market by voting with their dollars and many businesses are responding to this by embracing more environmentally friendly practices,” says Hero Packaging co-founder Vikram Davé.
“Eighty-five per cent of the businesses we surveyed believe that by being more sustainable they’ll end up attracting more customers in the long run. This is the positive shift in attitude we’ve been hoping for and it makes it an incredibly exciting time to be in the business of sustainability.”

Thousands of flood-damaged eco-friendly rubber children’s toys are being recycled and repurposed to build roads and other infrastructure.

Mizzie the Kangaroo has become fully circular by repurposing more than 2,000 of its iconic orange natural rubber teething toys and launching a new initiative whereby customers can post or return their used products to the business for recycling.
Indeed, thousands of the children’s toys damaged in this year’s floods have avoided landfill and instead been recycled and repurposed to build roads and other infrastructure, in what is believed to be a world-first for the $156 billion toy industry.
The award-winning products, pulled from the company’s flooded warehouse, found a new home with Pearl Global, a pioneering Australian company
committed to solving the global waste tyre problem.
Mizzie the Kangaroo founder, Sandra Ebbott, describes the partnership between the two Queensland companies as ‘perfect’.
“Our teething and educational toys are designed to give our children the best start in life,” she says.
“We’re on a mission now to extend this notion by ensuring our environmental impact is minimal, giving them a better future.
“We use natural and environmentally-friendly materials, but the fact we can now recycle our trademark products is huge for us and our customers.”
More than 12,000 units of Mizzie the Kangaroo’s educational
books, puzzles, music boxes and teething toys worth $330,000 were destroyed in February last year when water tore through its Brisbane warehouse.
Thousands of its bright orange natural rubber teething toys were covered in mud, rendering them unsuitable for sale.
Having built the company with a firm focus on sustainability, Ebbott couldn’t stand the thought of them going to waste, so on top of dealing with the clean-up, she has spent the past six months trying to find a second use for them.
Enter Pearl Global, who used its thermal desorption process to transform the toys into high-value fuel, carbon, steel and gas, while using almost zero emissions.
“To know the Mizzies that
were damaged in the floods and those no longer needed by our customers won’t go to waste and will play a critical role in our local infrastructure is pretty special,” Ebbott adds.
Pearl Global co-founder, Gary Foster, says the company was happy to provide a solution that ensured none of the damaged toys went to waste.
“It is a pleasure to support Mizzie the Kangaroo as a business that shares our values of circular economy and commitment to diverting waste from landfill through repurposing,” he says.
The global toy industry is valued at $156 billion, with the Australian share worth $586 million.

“Parents are buying fewer toys for their children and looking out for ones that are sustainably made and packaged, as a way to reduce the amount of waste their family produces,” she said.
“It’s up to all of us to find new and creative ways of doing things.”
Mizzie the Kangaroo recently closed a $268,000 crowdfunding campaign to help it develop a suite of new products and increase its presence overseas.
Its new recycling program, also recently launched, means each Mizzie purchased can be returned to the company at the end of its lifespan, so it can be repurposed and diverted from landfill.
“From now on, every Mizzie 100 per cent natural rubber teether no longer needed in a customer’s
home can be returned and will be re-purposed to building new roads across Australia, at next to zero emissions.
“This is a momentous occasion for our industry, our customers and our consumers, one that I personally hope will inspire others
to think of doing things differently.”
Ebbott says she was actively working with her Australian retail partners—which includes Myer, Kidstuff and Terry White Chemart— to create other collection points to make it easier than ever for customers to recycle.
Brisbane Economic Development Agency CEO, Anthony Ryan, says he is proud to see local partnerships creating positive change.
“This is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when enterprising people come together to overcome challenges,” he says.
“Thanks to the passion and ingenuity of Sandra and her team, what could have been a disappointing loss has been given a new, sustainable purpose.
“Brisbane Economic Development Agency is proud to support businesses by making connections that help them grow, adapt and succeed.”

Minimalism clashing patterns, vintage finds and laid-back styling— the carefree spirit of the 60s and 70s is breezing back into interiors.
As a nation, we’ve always had a soft spot for the boho look. It’s easy to see why—with its focus on colour and nostalgia and no-rules approach to styling, it’s a natural fit for our relaxed lifestyle and provides the perfect framework to create homes with heart.
According to trend forecasters, the ‘modern boho’ look is set to make waves in 2022 and 2023. With a little more polish and a greater emphasis on quality and craftsmanship than classic boho, it’s just the thing to bring cosy luxury to our homes.
“We call this look ‘Local Boho’
and it’s a soulful celebration of creativity, nostalgia and unpretentious home style— the very antithesis of harsh minimalism,” says Heather Nette King, interior stylist and Carpet Court style ambassador.
“With roots in the slow movement and natural living
philosophies, it’s about decorating your home to reflect your personal journey rather than following any prescriptive rules or decorating dos and don’ts.
“There’s colour, movement and a celebration of handmade and vintage style. The focus is on authentic living with farmhouse
vibes in the kitchen and quality family time in the lounge. The bedroom is a dreamscape of relaxed colour, pattern and artful layering, and the home office feels like a creative studio,” she says.
“Classic boho is often a riot of colour and pattern, whereas this new iteration is more considered. Warm, earthy hues on the floors and walls form a cosy, neutral backdrop. This palette welcomes furniture in natural materials, such as timber and rattan, and fabrics and art in shades of green, blue and coral. Styling is simple—pieces are given room to breathe to showcase their shape and texture.
“The beauty of this look is that it suits just about any architectural style, from coastal and period homes to contemporary apartments. All you need to do is unleash your creative self and let the decorating vibes flow,” she adds.
Although Boho styling seems pretty free and easy at first glance, there are a few (very relaxed) rules that will help you achieve a contemporary spin on this much loved interior style, whether it be for your home or your retail space.
The palette:
Blending colours and patterns can be a risky endeavour, but by sticking to a colour palette of say, up to five hues, the Local Boho look will be far more cohesive. Tap into the current trend for nature’s
warm, earthy tones such as pinky clays, soft sages and eucalypt greens, faded rust and pale mustard. These are gentle to the eye and will help pull together all of the other textures, patterns and styles in your space.
The patterns:
Creating a gorgeous blend of patterns is key to executing the Local Boho style. Whereas in some decorating styles it is important to keep the scale and type of patterns fairly consistent, the Boho style is more forgiving and you can pair maxi-scale prints with micro-prints, stripes with abstract patterns, and florals with checks or even more florals. To keep the look contemporary, do this against plain walls and pared back window furnishings like soft linen sheers.
The textures:
Texture is incredibly important when creating the Local Boho environment. Go for fabric that gives interest to both the eye and the fingertips, from luxe velvets through to natural linens, embroidered cushions, chunky rugs and thick loop pile carpets.
Flooring and windows:
The Local Boho look is wonderfully chilled-out, so ideally, the flooring and window treatments should be in neutral tones that convey a relaxed, organic feel, but are durable enough to cope in a
busy family home with pets or a high-traffic retail space. Pale timber floors, chunky rugs and highly textured carpets are the perfect stating point. For window treatments, keep it casual with linen blinds or sheers or simple roller blinds.

THE GOOD
Previous gia Australia winner, TheSuperCool, celebrated its 10year anniversary last year. Started as a pop-up a decade ago by Kate Vandermeer and Noonie, the husband and wife duo has since launched 30 pop-ups, done quite a few collaborations, launched four different versions of its online store and expanded three times into its current flagship emporium.
So what plans do Vandermeer and her husband have for the next 10 years? In the short term, the duo would like to continue to support and hunt down incredible brands that fit their ethos and grow their team to step back a bit more from the micro-management.
“Long term we’d like to pass the baton of TheSuperCool on to the right people and pursue other creative endeavours,” says Vandermeer.
Plenty of awards were handed out in 2022 to innovative Australian brands and creative retailers. Natural skincare brand Aromababy’s Barrier Balm was voted best nappy cream in Australia as part of the Tell Me Baby awards program, while Melbourne retailer Make Designed Objects and Brisbane based kitchenware brand Dreamfarm scooped awards at the gia Awards in Chicago.
“It’s incredibly special to be chosen as gia winners again, but we’re especially proud to be the only brand to be taking home awards in two categories,” said chief operating officer, Cate McDermott, after the win in the kitchenware and kitchen hand tools + cutlery categories.

“The role of the store has changed since Covid and we think our new location reflects the type of experience customers are looking for,” says Koskela cofounder, Sasha Titchkosky.
The year 2022 also had plenty of acquisitions and mergers worth mentioning including family-owned company Goliath which acquired Melbourne-based business, Colorific.
“The acquisition gives Goliath a great portfolio of products to take to the world while providing Colorific scale to be able to continue to develop great products for Australia and the global markets. For Colorific customers it is also great news as they will be able to still deal with an innovative and creative family business and have access to more products they may not already range,” said Colorific managing director, Mark Levi, at the time.
Rayell has joined forces with DWBH, a move that excited retailers across the country. Much like Rayell, DWBH has been a family business that has built a name for itself over the years, which made it a great fit for the merger.
“Our parent company was actively looking for wholesale businesses to acquire that represented a strong name within the industry,” said Rayell’s Laura Bartlett.
“I think retailers will enjoy being able to still shop with two brands but reap the benefits of having the ability to use the one checkout, thus saving money on freight.”
Ecommerce flower and gifting brand LVLY was snapped up by Limitless Technology in a multimillion dollar deal earlier in 2022.
Hannah Spilva, LVLY co-founder and CEO, said the acquisition will accelerate their vision to firmly establish LVLY as APAC’s most loved and most used flower and gift delivery company.
“We’ve been through a period of rapid growth in the Australian market but have always had our sights set on becoming a global business,” she explained.
Experience gifting brand BananaLab rebranded to We Wander in 2022, a move that was necessary to reflect the growth and evolvement of the brand since launching in 2017.
“BananaLab launched as a cool, fun, quirky new experience gift concept reflective in the name and its nature,” explains co-founder and director, Tom Dufraisse.
“Since then, BananaLab evolved into a premium experience gift solution that supports its local experience partners, provides unique customer engagement opportunities and pro-actively engages in philanthropic activities through our non-for-profit initiatives.”
Aussie chocolate business 17Rocks rebranded to Kkao and moved to a new custombuilt factory to enhance the chocolate experience.
“We changed our name from 17Rocks to Kkao to better reflect how we make our chocolate and our commitment to harnessing the power of cacao, offering pure, decadent chocolate treats—rich, luxurious and hand-crafted,” owner Annette Muller says.
“We moved from Seventeen Mile Rocks to our new factory where our customers will be greeted by the theatre of chocolate and bouquet of smells and flavours. The new factory will connect our customers to where cacao is grown, how chocolate is made and just how wonderful pure chocolate can be.”
Beauty’s Got Soul rebranded to Hampers with Soul after
branching out into gift hampers during Covid, which have become so popular that it was time to re-visit the business’ strategy, says founder, Leonie Henzell.
“Being a one-stop hamper shop that has a purpose and gives back to charity will help to reduce confusion and increase the offering. As we grow, we hope our retailers will benefit from the awareness and their customers will support them for their product choices.”
The Covid pandemic caused a lot of havoc and heartache for many people and businesses, however, it also inspired some fantastic business ideas such as gift flick, an innovative ecommerce plugin that enables consumers to virtually send any product or gift voucher in an e-tailer’s store.
“Our goal is to make online gifting simple, enjoyable and meaningful for everyone: gifter, recipient and retailer,” explains gift flick cofounder and CMO, Helen Marsh.
One of Australia’s best loved cooks, Adam Liaw, collaborated with tableware specialist Noritake in 2022 to produce a collection called Everyday.

THE BAD
At the start of 2022, Covid was still having a stronghold on Australia and the rest of the world and for the third year in a row trade fairs were either cancelled or postponed to a later date.
Reed Gift Fairs, Life Instyle and Melbourne Gift & Lifestyle were all moved, while Sydney Gift Fair stuck to its guns and went ahead with the February show.
“Continually cancelling businessto-business events would lead to a huge shift and downturn in the way people market their businesses, make sales and communicate with clients and suppliers,” AGHA CEO, Wayne Castle, said at the time.
However, for Reed Gift Fairs, the move to April made sense with many exhibitors and retailers expressing their health, safety and travel concerns at the time.
“With cases expected to surge over the coming weeks and throughout February, we have made the decision to go for the much safer option and postpone to April,” explained Cory McCarrick, event director for Reed Gift Fairs, in January after the announcement.
Overseas, Ambiente was cancelled while Maison&Objet was postponed to March. The Inspired Home Show in Chicago still went ahead but was reduced from four to three days.
To eliminate the last day of the show was an added safety precaution, according to the IHA board of directors, who made the decision early January 2022.
THE UGLY
Retailers would normally be thriving at this time of year with the post-Christmas sales and people out enjoying their summer holidays, but Omicron has been like a wrecking ball through the retail economy and small businesses in particular are suffering as a result, ARA CEO, Paul Zahra, said at the beginning of 2022.
“Consumer confidence is at an all-time low, we’re seeing equally low levels of foot traffic through our major shopping destinations. The hopes of struggling businesses who were banking on a prosperous holiday sales period have been dashed.”
Spending challenges started to creep up mid-year as cost-ofliving pressures began to impact family budgets.
“We’re in an uncertain economic environment, with cost-of-living pressures starting to bite and interest rates rising for the first time in over a decade,” he said.
While Australian retail sales have come out of the pandemic better than expected, inflationary challenges could prove more problematic, according to a Deloitte Access Economics’ quarterly Retail Forecasts subscriber report released mid-2022.
“Inflation is now a cold, hard reality to the extent that the majority of turnover growth over the next few years is expected to be driven by prices rather than volumes,” said Deloitte Access Economics partner, David Rumbens.
Indeed, the second half of 2022 inflation only edged higher with the RBA as a result continuing to increase interest rates. Rising inflation means prices rather than volumes are becoming the key driver of retail sales growth.
“While the poor sentiment hasn’t been fully reflected in spending
yet, it will only be a matter of time before spending growth moderates further. Internationally, spending has already dipped, with nominal retail spending in the US decreasing by 1.3 per cent and UK sales volumes decreasing by three per cent over the September quarter.”
It has also become much harder to find and recruit new team members, according to an ARA survey.
“This has been an issue through the pandemic, which has intensified this year and what’s worrying is that things are not getting any better. The labour and skills crisis are in addition to the intense cost pressures businesses are facing, with rents increasing along with fuel and energy costs and supply chain constraints. It is a dire situation for many small businesses, who are struggling to keep their heads above water,” Zahra said at the time.
Australia is operating at close to full employment and retailers are concerned about having enough labour in such a tight labour market. Retail job vacancies have more than doubled since May 2019 with no sign of slowing down. These positions aren’t being filled with the labour market expected to remain tight.
Supply issues also remained a constant worry for many businesses throughout 2022, affecting profits and sales across the board. G

The Covid-19 pandemic has transformed digital commerce. Lockdowns and social distancing saw a rise in home delivery and contactless services, with customers becoming accustomed to getting whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted and delivered to their doorstep in record speed. The growing demand for hyper-convenience and the need to shop from any device has put increased pressure on businesses, continually raising the bar to meet and exceed consumer demand.
Following multiple high profile data breaches in 2022, customers are becoming increasingly concerned about data privacy. Pair with this the fact that tech giants like Apple and Google have announced plans to do away with third-party cookies, first-party data is going to become increasingly important for businesses in the new year.
Businesses can no longer rely on customer data collected via third parties, but instead look at ways to collect their own first-party data through web traffic, marketing emails, purchase history and social media communications.
By utilising tools such as Adobe Commerce Cloud or Adobe Experience Cloud, combined with included cloud hosting from Azure or AWS, businesses can create a digital ecosystem that offers a 360 overview of the customer. This data enables businesses to deliver more personalised customer experiences and make data-driven business decisions.
As new technologies emerge and continue to disrupt the retail landscape, we’re starting to see the rise of digital transactions outside of traditional websites.
Moving away from the concept of online vs bricks and mortar, the ability for transactions to take place within just about any digital platform will make way for the newer concept of ‘commerce everywhere’.
Whether it’s allowing customers to complete a purchase via messaging service such as SMS, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, or whether it’s implementing AI-powered voice commerce so consumers can simply ask Google or Alexa to order them a new pair of shoes, businesses are no longer limited to making sales in store or via websites. Instead, taking a commerce everywhere approach means that retailers and other digital commerce businesses can make every digital touchpoint transactional in 2023 and beyond.
James Horne, CEO, Balance Internet, shares his predictions for how technology will continue to change the ecommerce landscape in 2023 and beyond and the key trends retailers should be across.
3 A switch to total experience
The traditional customer-centric approach is fast becoming obsolete. With consumer demand for hyper-convenience skyrocketing, the only way businesses can deliver the fastest, most streamlined service is by improving the experience for everyone involved. This means unifying the traditionally separate disciplines of customer experience (CX), user experience (UX), employee experience (EX) and multi-experience (MX), to create a more holistic total experience (TX).
As we move into 2023, we can expect the insatiable demand for hyper-convenience to continue, but without also taking into consideration the experiences of staff and third-party partners who are under increasing pressure to meet these demands, businesses will fail to deliver. Businesses will be looking to technologies that improve the total experience; keeping customers happy while also making staff and partners’ lives easier.
4 Fast mobile ecommerce more important than ever
The popularity of mobile ecommerce has been steadily climbing, with a PayPal report showing 82 per cent of Australians are now shopping on mobile.
Google has also switched to mobile-first indexing, with speedy mobile sites improving SEO rankings. We’ve been talking about the importance of enhancing the mobile ecommerce experience for a while now, but we expect that in 2023 this will become even more important.
Progressive web apps (PWA)—a ‘headless’ approach that separates the front end of an ecommerce site from the back, drastically improving mobile page load speeds—will be more widely adopted as slashing page load speeds becomes increasingly more important.
5 The rise of cloud native
Continuing with the theme of increasing speeds, cloud native— solutions that are built specifically for the cloud, in the cloud—is another key trend we expect to see more businesses adopt in 2023.
Although digital transformation continues to be a priority for many organisations, the truth is that legacy systems that aren’t designed for the cloud, simply don’t perform with as much speed and agility as cloudnative platforms. Not only do cloud-native platforms provide customers a faster, more seamless experience, they provide digital commerce businesses the unprecedented ability to be creative and test new ideas.
Choosing a cloud-native approach improves development capabilities, accelerates speed to market and makes it easier for businesses to continue to upgrade their commerce offerings to stay ahead of the competition.
6 Frictionless payments
Even with the fastest digital commerce sites, businesses will continue to lose customers if there are issues with payments.
Consumers have become used to the easy and seamless transactions offered by the likes of Amazon and Uber, and they expect the same frictionless payment experience across all ecommerce sites.
Providing customers with a frictionless payment experience is not just about storing their data so they don’t have to enter their details each time—although this is important—but it’s about offering the widest array of payment methods; accepting Apple Pay, offering buy-now-pay-later and potentially even adding crypto to the mix.
Customers want to be able to make a purchase without feeling like they’ve made a purchase, so businesses will need to be making their payment processes frictionless in 2023. G
Rebel WITH A CAUSE
KD: Pepa and I met in 2005 while studying textiles at East Sydney where our bond was formed by our shared rebellion of traditional textile methods. We had both held prior design roles but were bored and uninspired. We love the excitement of unbinding hand-dyed pieces, it’s addictive, exciting and unlocks all kinds of
creative ideas. The idea of making functional art is what spurred us into starting the business as we found a missing niche.
Q: Tell us more about the designing process and how do you decide on colours and materials?
KD: Colour is always a starting point. Colour and pattern are back in a big way. People are looking for comfort in what seems a very
unsafe world and this is reflected in interior spaces.
We are highly influenced by the Australian lifestyle and landscape and find that muted moody colours work beautifully with the dyed lines and imperfect patterns. Once a colour palette has been established, we can move on to materials.
We use a range of trading shibori techniques but being like a lot of Australians we are avid travellers,
so are also greatly inspired by other resist dyeing traditions from countries we have visited. We tend to be drawn to techniques that produce soft and fluid results.
Q: How has the industry changed since first launching and what would you have done differently?
KD: Social media wasn’t even a thing when we started out and that has been a huge

change. It has been wonderful in allowing smaller businesses to be able to get traction at getting their work out there.
If I could’ve done one thing differently it would be how to manage stress and not take things personally. This is extremely hard when owning your own business but by taking on all stress really dilates the enjoyment you get from what should be a creative high and it’s really unnecessary. Fact is, you can’t control everything, sometimes you just need to go with the flow.
That said, we work with wonderful creative colleagues we have around us and the clients and workshop participants we meet. People are everything.

I find often people come with the false belief they are not creative and are pleasantly surprised when they leave with a bag of wonderful pieces and a new creative outlook.

Alongside this we take a look at some of the key shifts in consumer behaviour that are prompting these new directions, from a greater need for calm to a stronger desire for individuality.
Creating calming environments within our homes has never felt quite so necessary, particularly as consumers continue to work from home for some or all of their working weeks. Creating places to withdraw in, and encouraging moments of calm are key. This mood is supported by reduced palettes and harmonious pairings, simple forms and a focus on creating dedicated relaxation spaces such as home spa settings or listening rooms.
Broad contrasts are found between stripped back, simplified, linear designs and richly textured and crafted pieces, both of which are key this season. Layered core tones, predominantly focussed on shades of white, natural stone and raw wood are key.
New and updated takes on craft play a big role this season. Modern craftspeople are reinventing traditional techniques and utilising brighter colour palettes, simplified shapes and new materials. Skills from
weaving and wood-making to stained glass window making are renewed, blending nostalgia with modern tastes. Traditional and artisanal items and techniques are celebrated. Tactile pieces and surfaces are layered up to create spaces that feel more individualistic. Hand-crafted processes emphasise the tactility of natural materials such as hand-woven linens and jute, raw wood and dappled hand-blown glass.
Pieces that appear one-of-a-kind take their cue from cult collectors pieces, adding fun and whimsy to everyday pieces of furniture and home accessories. Asymmetric legs, boldly patterned textiles and chunky or ‘pumped up’ forms create statement focal points that are both practical and artistic.
The imperfect becomes sought after. Surfaces appear speckled, mottled and uneven, while loose brush strokes decorate ceramics. Asymmetric and
amorphous forms appear to have been over-inflated or to have collapsed in on themselves. Maker’s marks are evident on crafted surfaces, celebrating artistic processes and the individuality of pieces.
A new generation of fabrics is emerging and becoming increasingly commercialised. Materiality is a growing subject, with new and innovative solutions introduced each season. The focus now is not only on how materials look and feel, but also on how they’re being produced and how they will be
reused or disassembled at the end of their usable lives. New recycled composites, waste materials and biomaterials are key.
Through colour, texture and form, houses are becoming bolder representations of the people that live in them. Whether rich, tonal and moody or bold, bright and joyful, colour is being used more expressively to make our homes our own, and also to actively alter our moods. Colour is applied liberally or introduced as furniture accents or layered textiles.

Kitchen and lifestyle retailer, Minimax, has been chosen as the 2022/23 gia Australia winner and will be representing Australian retail at the awards in Chicago next year.
Minimax was established by the Harrison family in 1967, originally as a small local hardware store and over the years the business evolved and changed ownership to another Melbourne-based family, the Blythes.
Under the new ownership stores were acquired or rebranded around Australia from the previously well-known Your Habitat and General Trader stores to create one destination across the country for premium homewares retailing, called Minimax.
“We are thrilled that Minimax has been chosen to represent Australia at the gia Awards in March 2023,” enthuses CEO, Andrea McCormick.
The retailer has gone on quite a journey since its launch and currently has 17 stores Australiawide. Store design and aesthetics have always been a major part of the instore experience.
“Minimax is a kitchen and lifestyle retailer with multiple stores across Australia. Unique to Minimax is our comprehensive range of kitchen and lifestyle products. Like no other store in Australia, we cover a wide assortment of product that embodies our tag line—
‘Entertaining Ideas for your Life’.
“Inspiration is sought from a broad range of retailers from around the world. Consideration is given to the lifestyle of customers, creating a warm, inviting and inspiring shopping experience.”
Minimax Loves is one of the merchandising techniques it uses instore and online and highlights features of a unique product that can often go unnoticed
by customers. No reference is made to price on the ticketing, as customers are drawn to the unique features of the product. This has resulted in a 200 per cent increase in sales of specific lines identified through this campaign.
“Our philosophy has been to create display points within the store that inspire the customer and encourage curiosity. All our store merchandising
displays are coordinated by our visual merchandise team and communicated through our online learning platform—The Pantry.”
Indeed, last year Minimax launched an online learning platform that is used across the entire business for all operational management for store and support office staff. The platform is called The Pantry as ‘every home has a well-stocked pantry’.
Staff at one of the 17 Minimax storesThe Pantry is used from the beginning of the employee life cycle, with all on-boarding of staff completed through the platform. All staff must read policies and induction material before starting at Minimax.
The Pantry is also used for communication of weekly, monthly and annual events, with an accessible calendar so stores can see copies of all forthcoming media. It holds all policy documentation and auto notifies when a policy has been updated, requiring all relevant staff to read and acknowledge the updated version.
“The Pantry is also used as a staff engagement tool, where we conduct surveys on events, workflows and input on range decisions. The store team values the opportunity to participate in decision making.
“It is linked to our store rostering system, so all staff have personal access to forthcoming rosters across the network. We have also developed a mobile app that allows team members to receive notifications on their
phones and keep up to date on communication from the convenience of their mobile phone,” adds McCormick.
“Launching The Pantry this year has had an incredible impact on our ability to communicate better and improve process flow within the organisation. Every store receives daily updates through The Pantry that provides clear instructions on all operational requirements of Minimax and encourages staff engagement.”
Like any other retailer, Covid impacted Minimax with lockdowns and store closures impacting the way it conducted business.
“The acceleration of online purchasing through multiple lockdowns in Australia resulted in rapid growth of our online
ecommerce business. This resulted in a strategic review of our digital capabilities.
“Enhancements of the online site include additional features to improve the functionality, navigation of the site and stock availability for all items for customers. Over the last 12 months we have been redesigning our site to better match the aesthetics of our stores. We started with the product page as we viewed this as the most important.
“We are always striving to match our exceptional instore experience; with such a wide variety of products and categories this can be challenging, but we feel we are well on our way to achieving this.
“Our in-store customer experience is at the forefront of service standards. Our long-serving, informative staff provide a high level of expertise and service daily.”
