It’s time to embrace the ‘new normal’ in swimming pool water disinfection If there’s anything recent times have taught us, it’s that our lives have changed forever. We must work harder to keep our communities safe as well as protect our planet’s resources.
For years people have been disinfecting their swimming pools with liquid or granular chlorine dosing. It’s unsafe, cumbersome and wastes millions of litres of water each year. Independent tests and research by Griffith University Brisbane showed that when using liquid or granular chlorine pool water was unbalanced 50% and 80% of the time respectively.
wa t
Yet with AIS Water’s disinfection technology the water was balanced 100% of the time. That same research showed that AIS Water’s technology saves up to 1.6million litres of water, in one 50 metre swimming pool each year. That’s over $40,000 AUD per year in savings.*
AIS Water offers the most efficient and safest method of disinfecting pool water as chlorine is created within the pool water, not added. It’s time to farewell history and embrace the ‘new normal’ of Australian made, water disinfection.

I was expecting to write a welcome to the SPLASH! Pool & Spa Trade Show on this page, but unfortunately we’ll have to wait till June next year now. I know many people are disappointed that the show had to be postponed, but we can only hope the delay will make next year’s show even better. June will come soon enough, but hopefully things will be back to normal long before then. I wish all our readers the best as they try to cope in these difficult times. All I can say is thank God for the Olympics. When you’re corralled at home it’s great to have something for the family to watch that’s a mix of sport, drama and theatre. In the soccer, the euphoria following the Matilda’s edge-of-yourseat victory over Great Britain lasted a few days before they fell to Sweden in controversial circumstances. In the women’s rugby, the Black Ferns broke out in a haka after winning the gold they couldn’t manage in Rio. But the most drama was in the pool. It was Australia’s best-ever swimming performance at an Olympics: 20 medals including nine gold, coming just behind the US with 11 gold. There were individual moments of nail-biting excitement as swimmers and teams achieved what they hadn’t believed possible, from the women setting a new world record in the 4 x 100 free, to the duels between Ariarne Titmus and Katie Ledecky – with Arnie becoming the first person to ever beat Ledecky in an individual event. And she did it twice! There was also Kaylee McKeown’s thrilling backstroke wins, Izaac Stubblety-Cook’s record-breaking 200 metre breaststroke win and Emma McKeon’s amazing seven medals including four gold – even helping get the bronze in the mixed relay fifteen minutes after winning the 50-metre gold. The swim team also picked up three silver and eight bronze. The Kiwi’s also won several medals on the water, rather than in it, including five rowing/kayaking golds. It’s worth considering that the great disappointment of the delay in the 2020 Olympics worked in Australia’s favour, as the young team had an extra year to improve. And improve they did. They all deserve big congratulations. Others who deserve a loud cheer are the winners of the statebased awards. They are all showcased here and will be up for national awards, including the highly coveted National Pool of the Year. We’ll have more about that pool in the next issue.

Covid
In lockdown, a swimming pool can be a saviour One of SPASA’s images that can be used to promote the benefits of swimming pools
“It is indisputable that swimming is an easy and effective way to improve and maintain your health and wellbeing,” says COO Spiros Dassakis. He says swimming offers a unique opportunity to promote, maintain and improve wellbeing across the lifespan of all individuals regardless of culture, society, gender, age, disability or socioeconomic status. “Staying active in a well-maintained and serviced swimming pool and spa means people from all demographics can remain active in their own homes as well as contribute to improving their mental and physical wellbeing,” he says. As children and families across Australia are being mandated to reduce outside contact and shelter at home during lockdowns, the backyard pool or spa provides the ideal way for families to exercise and focus on their health and well-being.
If ever there was a time when a swimming pool or spa could be considered a lifesaver it is during the current lockdowns. The owners of the million-plus Australian swimming pools already know that a pool does much more than just provide a place to cool off on a hot day. It is where family can spend valuable leisure time together, where you can gain the benefits of healthy exercise, and where you can find the serenity to forget your worries. Swimming itself is an excellent form of recreation, exercising the whole body while improving breathing, aiding the maintenance of a healthy weight, and promoting general well-being including great benefits to the cardio-vascular system as well as to mental health. For these benefits to be available the water has to be properly maintained and the pool properly looked after, as handled by pool and spa professionals. Their work is essential in these times.
Spreading the word SPASA Australia is providing resources to help industry members spread the word about the benefits of swimming pools and spas, and the importance of pool professionals in keeping the water properly maintained.
12 SPLASH! August/September 2021
However, residential swimming pools and spas require ongoing chemical supplies to keep them safe and ongoing maintenance of sanitation equipment to ensure they operate correctly. “Changes to water’s physical, chemical, and microbiological conditions occur constantly in swimming pools and spas and need continual observation and care,” says Dassakis. “Maintenance of swimming pools and spas in accordance with Australian Standards by an experienced industry professional provides a contact-free ‘essential service’ during restrictions by preventing the transmission of infectious diseases, helping maintain community health, and ensuring public safety.”
Expert view There is no available evidence anywhere in the world to indicate that covid-19 survives in wellmanaged and maintained swimming pools and spas. Quotes from various sources confirm this, including from the Australian Government and experts in the US and UK. Australian Department of Health: “There is no evidence that the virus will survive in well managed and maintained pools chlorinated in accordance with Australian standards and guidelines.” US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): “Currently, there is no evidence that covid-19 can spread to people
through recreational water. CDC is not aware of any scientific reports of the virus that causes covid-19 spreading to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, or water playgrounds. Plus, proper operation of public pools, hot tubs, and water playgrounds (such as at an apartment complex or owned by a community) and disinfection of the water (with chlorine or bromine) should inactivate the virus.” Australian Health Protection Principal Committee: “There is no evidence that the virus will survive in well managed and maintained pools chlorinated in accordance with Australian standards and guidelines.” In the UK, a recent study by virologists at Imperial College London found swimming pool water can inactivate the covid-19 virus in only 30 seconds under the right conditions, adding that the risk of transmission of covid-19 in swimming pool water is incredibly low. Additionally, an Australian discussion paper by Griffith University Professors Stratton and Hunt found: • Pools require vigilant and rigorous maintenance for water quality and physical safety reasons. • From a microbiological perspective, water quality maintenance and disinfection reduce the risk of exposure to harmful pathogens that may cause ear infections, gastroenteritis, or skin irritation. • Inappropriate storage, handling, and mixing of chemicals can result in erroneous chemical reactions and water balance. • Lack of fence, pump and filter maintenance may result in physical injury and death. • Without investigation, the members of the household may assume the cause of illness as something that was consumed, rather than the family swimming pool. • Government must adhere to these laws and owners should not be prevented from undertaking service and maintenance of their private owned pool/spa under any circumstances. It is of benefit to the whole industry to spread the word that pools and spas are safe from covid, are vital for public health, and need to be properly maintained. While these figures give an indication of the way the market is trending, they are not comprehensive and don’t include all pools built or even all DAs lodged. By some estimates, the total national numbers including all types of pools could be almost double these figures. They do not include pool projects that are approved as part of a new home, smaller projects under the cost threshold, renovations that don’t require a DA, or some aboveground pools. Additionally, not all councils are forthcoming with data or report on time; councils in some states such as Queensland and Victoria are particularly reluctant. Learn2Swim week back on this spring
Luke Parker and Kate Lawrence enjoy their half of the new pool Construction
Swanning in duplex style

Sydney Swans footballer Luke Parker and interior designer Kate Lawrence set out to transform their ugly duckling property in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. The original house became two modern homes after a knockdown and rebuild – one for the couple and the other to sell.
Learn2Swim Week is back again for 2021 during the week of September 25 to October 3, where Poolwerx and Kids Alive partner with Australia’s swim schools to offer free swimming lessons for children under five. “Swimming is a way of life for most Australians, but sadly we’re still seeing backyard drownings. That is why it is crucial to introduce kids to water safety as early as possible,” says Poolwerx CEO John O’Brien. “Nearly 2.7 million Australians live in a house with a swimming pool, and with people staying at home more over the last eighteen months we know that this number is rapidly increasing. That makes Learn2Swim Week an even more vital initiative, and one which we are proud to pioneer.” Research from Poolwerx found more than 30 per cent of parents whose children participated in Learn2Swim Week in 2020 enrolled their children in ongoing swim classes afterwards. “During last year’s campaign, we received nearly 3000 lesson requests from parents,” says Kids Alive founder, Laurie Lawrence. “While this was a huge number it was down from the previous year –understandably due to the unusual circumstances we were all facing with covid-19. With Australians set to be holidaying at home for the time being, it’s important we get the support of pool schools across the country to make sure these crucial lessons are accessible for all.” To find out more or register your swim school, visit www. learn2swimweek.com/register-your-pool or go to www.splashmagazine.com.au/QuickLinks137 for a direct link.
They put great importance on installing a pool in each yard and enlisted Blue Haven to maximise yard size and minimise costs. What they did in the end was insert one shell and built a dividing wall through the middle, saving nearly $30,000. The resulting poolscapes are picturesque spaces with a relaxed, coastal vibe ideal for entertaining. The construction team had a share of obstacles including a significant volume of sand which made the process both challenging and dangerous, and an extremely tight deadline of building the two pools within four days – as the duplex project needed to be in the e-series The Build Game, a renovation series featured on realestate.com.au.

Sydney pool team services iconic TV shows
S
ydney’s Best Pool Shop (SBPS) has been busy this year, maintaining the pools for a popular Australian TV show and a new international program. The team spent four weeks maintaining an incredible 23 pools for the Australian Ninja Warrior program, which aired recently on Channel 9. Their success in managing the water quality for that show led to them picking up duties for the brand new Frogger game show which will air internationally and Rust in the Frogger pool water was caused by is the biggest ever television production of its type in the use of mild steel Australia, being produced for NBC America and hosted plate in the construction by Damon Wayans Jr. SBPS director Paul London says it was challenging as the pools didn’t have permanent filtration, but they managed to keep them all crystal clear for the duration of the show. “We are now working on building and maintaining two 1.3 million litre pools over three months for the duration of the filming of Frogger, the reality TV game show based on the 1980s arcade game with the same name.” As well as being tasked with keeping these enormous pools clean, they are also in charge of water effects such as water cannons, air curtains and waterfalls. “This has been an amazing experience for all involved, keeping us busy through the usually quiet winter months.”
Ninja Warrior
“We got an email asking if we can do these 23 pools – about 300,000 litres all up. It ended up being five weeks on site,” says London. “The pools varied from 30,000 litres to 80,000 litres and there was no permanent filtration whatsoever. Basically, we put together a bunch of filtration systems on trolleys and wheeled them around to each pool. We’d filter each pool for half an hour to an hour per day, vacuum it and dose it up with chlorine.” To create the trolley systems, they used AstralPool CTX 280 1hp pumps and Waterco Opal 180 filters. For disinfection they used Phoenix stabilised granular chlorine as the sanitiser, Lo-chlor Miraclear algaecide and Tile’n’Vinyl cleaner to keep the waterline clean. London says the water quality wasn’t too bad after a long night of shooting, but it did include some fake tan and other make-up that made the waterline quite filthy. “And all those stepping stones in the water are anchored to the floor with untreated steel plate that rusts – even within a couple of weeks,” he says. “The steel plates are stacked so they’re a bit roughed up, and even within 24 hours some of them were covered in rust.” Meghan London considering the tricky path across the Ninja Warrior stepping stones
16 SPLASH! August/September 2021
The filtration set up for Frogger
When they detected rust affecting the pool, they’d leave the filtration running longer. “Ninja warriors filmed from 10pm to 5am. After we’d had a long day on site, we didn’t get to watch it – but we saw course testers going through it though which was interesting. We’ve all been watching this season but a lot of the guys working on it were fans from before and for them it was pretty cool to work on it.”
Frogger
SBPS got the Frogger work through doing Ninja Warrior when Mitech Design, who do all the staging and technical work for big TV shows such as Holey Moley and Big Brother, asked them if they wanted to do another project. Frogger is based on the arcade game where frogs have to cross a creek and a highway by jumping on the backs of logs, crocodiles and other floating items. The original Frogger was developed by Konami and released in arcades by Sega and Gremlin in 1981. The reality game show contestants will have to leap over “snapping alligators” and hop over “hungry hippos” to conquer the course. Eureka Productions is producing 13 hour-long episodes. Frogger was shot at Olympic Park on a purpose-built sound stage in the show bag pavilion. The set consists of two 1.3 million litre pools, made from timber with both a structural lining and a cosmetic liner. “We’ve got permanent filtration on those ones, for which we installed 100mm suction lines, AstralPool BX pumps and Hychlor open cell media in Hychlor Evo filters,” he says. The pools were heated by EvoHeat heat pumps. “Because it was only for ten weeks, we didn’t want to end up with tonnes and tonnes of sand at the end of it, so we used the open cell media which can be dried out and stored for next time. It’s an unusual scenario that you’ve only got to use a filter of that size for ten weeks, so the open cell media was the solution we came up with.” Not only did they have to figure out the water maintenance, they had to design and implement the water cannons and water effects. “We made the water cannons similar to the Bellagio fountains – but safe to shoot at someone. They were so popular and made such good television we ended up putting them on every set – and they were all our design,” he says. n

Small business minister tours new anode site Di Farmer, Queensland’s minister for small business and development was taken on a tour of the planned expansion of AIS Water by CEO Elena Gosse. Also on the tour were local member Joan Pease and SPASA CEO Lindsay McGrath. The state-of-the-art factory at Tingalpa will be AIS’s third manufacturing facility and will be the only catalytic anode manufacturing facility in the southern hemisphere. Anodes are critical for the electrolysis process to purify swimming pool water, which is the basis of AIS’s technology. Gosse says she was delighted to lead the tour of the company’s existing and future facilities and inform the minister and VIP visitors about AIS’s continued success and growth over the past financial year, including how it had overcome the covid-19 challenges and recorded a 35 per cent increase in business. She says that while the swimming pool industry encountered setbacks due to the coronavirus, particularly the repeated closure of public pools across the country, the issue served to shine a spotlight on the need for greater pool safety. “We are acutely aware of the need for advanced water disinfection technology such as ours which
NSW Fair Trading executive director of investigations and enforcement Valerie Griswold says falsifying documents in the building and trades space can result in potentially debilitating costs to consumers if anything were to go wrong. “Fair Trading will use all its powers to stamp out operators like this.”

Gosse also informed the minister about her push for a Safe School initiative, replacing conventional chlorine dosing systems in schools with in-line chlorination. “Our water disinfection systems can now be found in 55 countries worldwide including 120 Queensland school pools and 16 out of 22 Brisbane City Council municipal pools, so Queensland is really leading the way in this area,” she says. “On a personal note, I was thrilled to learn that the minister swims almost every day at the Colmslie Aquatic Centre and Health Club, which is protected by our technology.” McGrath took the opportunity to update the minister on SPASA’s initiative to encourage formal training for pool operators, particularly its new commercial pool technician program which delivers the required aquatic industry qualifications to compliantly manage public and commercial swimming pools and spas in Australia. Improving professionalism in the New Zealand industry Jonty Mills at April’s Narellan Pools NZ Dealer Forum in Hamilton
J
onty Mills has hit the ground running following his appointment as SPASA New Zealand general manager. Since February he has met countless industry participants, attended conferences and industry events, visited councils, tried to meet every existing member and journeyed to the far reaches of the country. His energetic activity has seen a significant change in the landscape, as the aims of improving the professionalism of the industry and increasing membership numbers are being met. In fact, the number of SPASA New Zealand members has almost doubled from the beginning of the year. “I’ve been out and about nonstop for the past five months,” he says. “I’m away a lot and have visited most parts of the country – with a few destinations left to do. Even though most pool building goes on up around the top half of the North Island, there is strong demand right across New Zealand. Also, New Zealand has a very high rate of spa ownership right across the country, and the demand is ever increasing. “I’ve been meeting people, making connections and joining the dots, and in doing so, I’ve learned there is a lot of crossfunction between manufacturers, suppliers, builders, retailers and distributors. “I’ve also learned it’s a much bigger industry that I first thought when I came on board – and that it’s a very robust market.”
The covid effect
Part of the reason for the strong market is the covid effect. As in Australia, covid has seen a surge of interest for Kiwi homeowners to spend money on their outdoors to better enjoy their enforced staycations. “Everyone’s really busy here. The spin off from covid and people not being able to travel is that people are spending their money locally on long term investments in lifestyle and health. The discretionary spend is being spent in our industry for sure.” On the other side however, the global pandemic has brought with it some supply chain issues. “Most spas come from Australia, Canada, the US or China,” he says. “And the materials as well come from offshore to a large extent, so there is a challenge on the supply chain.”
Strategic focus
Mills is strategically focusing on growing, protecting and promoting the industry on behalf of members, community and the wider pool and spa industry.
e four pillars to support members and the Th industry are: •E ducation and research – improving skills and knowledge through training and greater recognition via research. •R epresentation – advocacy, lobbying, policy and standards at both local and central government level impacting the industry. • Member services – partnerships, products and services designed to save money, create efficiencies and grow sales. • Promotion – marketing communications. He says that demand for training is high, with 70 students registering for workshops covering testing and controlling pool water quality, diagnostic maintenance of pool systems, project management for pool and spa builders and spa service, and maintenance and repair. Mills, a Kiwi with a strong background in local business, is keen to point out that SPASA New Zealand is a New Zealand entity, for New Zealanders by New Zealand, but with the added benefit of being able to draw on SPASA’s wider resources. Mills was CEO of member-based organisation Water Safety New Zealand for nearly five years before joining SPASA, and prior to that had a lengthy career in the private sector. He has a wealth of leadership and advocacy experience across diverse stakeholder and membership groups. “I know the local environment and speak the local language – while SPASA has amazing expertise, resources and knowledge I can draw on,” he says. He believes the local industry wants to become more professional via qualifications and potential licensing of industry participants, as enhanced professionalism will deliver many benefits for consumers, members and the industry as a whole. “From what I can gather, there hasn’t been a track record of recognised qualifications and professionalism in the wider industry to date,” he says. “You don’t need a license or qualifications to be a pool builder at the moment, so there is a disparity between professional industries and the pool building industry currently.” He aims to see recognised skills and qualifications introduced, helping make the New Zealand industry more valued by the government, employers and the community, while also creating career pathways. “There is a lot of difficulty in finding and retaining good people,” he says. “As we professionalise the industry we will attract more young people. They will be able to gain qualifications and see a viable career path so they will stay in the industry.” In addition, he’s working with local authorities around compliance and interpretations of the building code. This includes particular emphasis on the consent process, involving restricting access to residential pools (boundary and temporary fencing) and safety from falling. Following July’s industry summit and awards gala, Mills and his SPASA colleagues are planning to host a New Zealand symposium. Held towards the end of the year, it will bring together industry, local and central authorities, and other stakeholders to explore interpretations and consensus around pool and spa safety, with particular emphasis around planning, regulations and decision making. n Contact: www.spasa.co.nz August/September 2021 SPLASH! 21

Top tips to prepare your retail business for sale By John O’Brien
J
ohn O’Brien is the founder and CEO of swimming pool and spa franchise network Poolwerx. He has helped many industry businesses change hands, and here he offers his top tips to help you get the best price.
1. Be sale ready before you put your business on the market
You wouldn’t sell your house without giving it a spruce up. First impressions are everything – refresh your store externally first then internally including signage and uniforms and your vans too. To maximise and showcase the value of your business, it’s important you truly understand where that value lies. Do you know your customer base and have a full and complete client database? Do you have a clear understanding of your assets – vehicles, stock, equipment, fit-out, technology. Can you provide a complete business history and solid financial records for the past three years? These are all extremely important to buyers and having this information to hand will make it easier to sell your business. Don’t forget to invest in your staffs’ training and retention. Buyers want peace of mind knowing staff are fully accredited and experienced when they come into a new business.
2. Be realistic about the value of your business
You have built a business with your blood, sweat and tears. It might even have been in the family for generations. Owners have a really strong emotional connection to their business – I know I do as a founder. But be realistic about what your business is worth. It’s easy for owners to sometimes have an inflated view of their business’ value – but buyers will only pay for what the business is worth. If you are trying to sell at too high a price, buyers will run away before negotiations even start. Typically, a business is valued on the average of the last three year’s profit multiplied by 1.5-2.5, plus stock at valuation. This price includes all assets but not your creditors and debtors – you still collect these after the sale. Remember to also budget for any additional fees – accountants, lawyers, brokers, stamp duty, training time, capital gains tax – to avoid any unexpected surprises.
3. Put your Intellectual Property (IP) into a reference manual
Your business system is what you are going to sell – how it will operate after you’ve sold. That’s why it is so important to develop a business manual. This may take months to develop and needs to include every touchpoint for the business – operations of retail and service, supply chains, HR systems, marketing, finance, etc, so potential buyers feel comfortable taking the reins straight away. Our industry is complex so uncomplicate it into a guide book – especially for those who haven’t had industry experience.
4. It is still business as usual
Now is not the time to slow down and take your foot off the pedal. You need to keep growing, selling, improving sales and your bottom line to make your business more valuable for a potential 22 SPLASH! August/September 2021
buyer. You get more for a business that has a growth curve going up than down. The sale process can sometimes take anywhere from six to twelve months, so be patient and manage your stress levels during that time. And keep it confidential and discreet, tell no one and don’t spook clients, staff or suppliers – unless one of them could be a buyer!
5. Communicate with key people
Through the sale process, keep those that must know in the loop – your lawyer, accountant, bank, landlord, fellow directors, your wife or partner. This will ensure everyone is on the same page and there are no surprises when it’s time to sign the paperwork.
6. Do you need to involve a broker?
While engaging a broker might seem like a hassle-free way to sell your business, there are downsides. Brokers are generalists, whereas an industry specialist will support you with significant expertise. Industry specialists will also have access to more motivated buyers compared to a broker. It’s best to use people who know our industry or have sold a pool business before. Selling your business directly will also save on commissions, which generally reach three to six percent – not exactly loose change on a million-dollar transaction.
7. Market far and wide
Finding the right buyer for your business is not easy, so don’t put all your eggs in one basket. To generate as many enquiries as you can, advertise on a range of platforms – Allbiz Australia, Business for Sale, Seek for Business, Linkedin, Facebook – multiple listings will help you reach a wider audience. Remember, the longer your business is on the market, the more the price will decline, so generating a healthy level of enquiries early is key to selling at the best price. Don’t forget buyers could be right under your nose. Often the best sales come from staff or customers, so don’t be afraid to discuss with them directly but be selective.
8. Timing the sale right
Some people think they need to sell at a particular time in the business cycle, whether the end of the financial year, or the end of the summer. That’s not the case. If you’ve lost your mojo, if it’s all becoming a little too difficult, if you’re finding it hard to smile at every customer that comes through the door, or hard to get out of bed – I dare say the time has come. One thing to look out for is the timing of your lease. You want to ensure it has more than two or three years to go, this will appeal to potential owners who know they don’t won’t have to worry about lease negotiation in the years to come, again, making your business more appealing. We all need an exit plan. In fact, you need to manage your business to the point where it is always sale ready, even if you don’t plan to sell, as it brings a state of excellence to your brand. And don’t forget, the right buyer never knocks at a convenient time. n Contact: www.poolwerx.com.au

Overcoming pool equipment installation nightmares By Cal Stanley
S
ome of the biggest problems I came across in my time as a consultant was with pool equipment and control installations. In reality, there should be no “nightmares”, but too often they arise.
The pool equipment location
Simply put, the best location is as close to the pool as is physically and aesthetically possible. However, the pool builder will not always be able to put it in that best location. During my time in the industry, I dealt exclusively with the prospective pool owner many times, and it was often not difficult to talk them into a better location when the advantage in doing so was well explained.
“The smaller the pipe sizes and/or the longer the pipe run and the further the equipment is from the pool, the worse the pool water quality will be.”
The smaller the pipe sizes and/or the longer the pipe run and the further the equipment is from the pool, the worse the pool water quality will be.
Planning the plant room
You don’t build or install the pool without a plan indicating its precise location. The same goes for the equipment installation. 1. First, draw all the equipment, controllers, and power points on paper, even if it is only a rough sketch. This will assist in getting everything in the best order and location. Do this before any pipes are installed so that the pump suction line is ready for the pump without further pipework requiring more pipe fittings. 2. The overall aim is to keep the pipework simple, as short as possible, and with the least number of elbows. 3. Have your electrician position power points as close as possible to where the equipment will be located. 4. P ower and other equipment cables cannot be shortened by the installer. However, they can be shortened by your electrician. This will help tidy up the area.
Equipment pipework However, I mostly worked through architects and home builders. Some would see the reasoning behind a change of location and others would not budge at all. Many of these discussions would lead to a variation in my price. One of the problems of pool equipment being in a location remote from the pool is that it should, in most instances, trigger a change in the quoted or the contract price. Why is this you may ask? Because the distance that the equipment area is from the pool affects the efficiency of the entire filtration system and the quality of the pool water. Both the flow rate and water quality are always affected by the pipe sizes used, the length of the pipe run, the number of 90-degree and 45-degree elbows and the pump and filtration system used. 24 SPLASH! For most domestic pools, it is acceptable to plumb in the pipe size that matches the equipment connections. However, if a pump has one sized connection and the equipment item has another, always plumb the system in the larger pipe size. I hope you will never have anything like the pictures on this page! n For these columns, Cal Stanley draws on his experience and success in pool construction, having run awardwinning Neptune Pools in Western Australia for three decades, as well as sitting on many standards committees and industry boards, and working as a pool consultant, trainer and delivering hydraulics courses for the swimming pool industry. well-lit pool provides not only a safer environment for swimmers but also can boost the mood of the surrounding poolscape. Lighting can extend the usability of a swimming pool while highlighting the beauty of the asset from inside the home. Fortunately, as Aqua-Quip general manager Gary Clark explains, pool lighting has come a long way in the past decade. “The Australian underwater pool light market has progressed from large-niche 240-volt pool lights imported from USA in the1970s,” he recalls. “Local companies, namely Stroud and Filtrite, then pioneered their own lower voltage versions.”
Identify your focus Aqualux Lighting is a family-owned Australian business that has been operating for more than 25 years in the electronics industry and for the past 10 years in landscape lighting. They suggest that one of the essential aspects of any outdoor lighting plan is to first identify potential focal points across the property. Landscape lighting designs are reliant upon proper balance and careful execution for optimal results and offer the biggest payoff in terms of style when existing
Then, from late 70s through to the 90s, most locally manufactured lights were surface mounted styles — all halogen models. “From the mid-90s, local manufacturers reverted to the recessed mounting system, whereby a niche was cast into the concrete wall, allowing fitment of a modern looking light that was flush with the pool interior,” he says. “For new pool construction, these niche lights are the most commonly installed today, in both concrete and fibreglass pools.” While lighting designers and manufacturers continue to offer multi-coloured LED fittings, Clark has observed an increasing interest in white options.
centrepieces are highlighted. Water features are a natural focal point of any property, so lighting schemes should be built around the idea of highlighting and showing them off to perfection.
positioned behind them for added drama. Creating strong silhouettes with careful backlighting is another great technique but may not work well if the placement precludes water emphasis.
Lighting fixture selection and placement is crucial to the successful implementation of water feature focal-point lighting.
Indirect lighting allows for reflection and water movement emphasis more fully than direct spotlighting in many cases. Still, fountains and other prominent aspects of outdoor water features may benefit greatly from the use of carefully positioned spotlights. Plant life surrounding water features can provide an interesting balance of shadow and silhouette, especially if they’re interspersed with low-level lighting fixtures to provide additional illumination.
Different materials will require different types of maintenance, especially when they’re regularly exposed to moisture from water features. Maximising the “wow factor” of water features is contingent upon the correct placement of fixtures throughout the property. For instance, a waterfall or cascading feature becomes especially striking at night when spotlights are

“I suspect the change is due to the increase in architecturally designed pools, with certain light colours being specified,” he says. “For instance, specifiers will choose white lights to highlight the expensive imported tiles that are used. A client takes forever to choose the correct interior colour, only for it to be illuminated by a light that is changing colour; specifiers prefer a cool white or warm white light instead.” The lighting supply chain has also been transformed with the advance of smart lighting and Internet of Things (IoT) applications — not to mention the change in consumer demand. Software developers, electronics engineers and lighting manufacturers are increasingly collaborating and considering all facets of the end-user product. Clark says these new technologies tend to relate to controlling the functions of LED underwater lights. “Lighting manufacturers have created firmware to allow operation from a number of third-party controllers,” he explains. “We’re also seeing greater use of plug-and-play detachable cables, which simplify the installation process while ensuring lights can be easily retro-fitted to existing cables.”
Illuminating outdoor entertaining zones
Spa Electrics started off in 1976 as a small family business, and has since established itself as an industry leader in premium underwater lighting and associated equipment. The company’s product range has evolved over the years thanks to an ongoing commitment to product development. “Innovation to us means listening to our customers and understanding what is important, and then translating that information into dynamic products that meet the demands of the industry,” says Spa Electrics CEO Kevin Rust. Spa Electrics’ lighting products are made in Australia from injection moulded plastic, together with proprietary LED technology and associated hardware. “These components are then transformed into the finished product through our in-house assembly 30 SPLASH! process, and are then packaged with utmost care and attention by a highly trained production team located at our manufacturing facility in Dandenong South, Victoria,” he says. In recent years, Spa Electrics introduced its signature Multiplus LED light – billed as the only RGB+W (full colour plus white) LED on the market – to offer pool owners a range of bold hues including pure white and a number of dynamic colour shows. Their next offering to the market was the iRIS remote control, which was specifically developed to work in conjunction with the Multiplus LED. “The sleek and stylish remote offers superior features including direct colour select, the ability to dim the lights with three brightness levels, long range signal and pool and spa channel selection,” says Rust. Spa Electrics has since expanded its lighting range to include a new Matrix range of LED strip lights. “Featuring all the elements that the industry loves about our pool lights, we have now developed a range of landscape and water blade strip lights,” he says. “Like all Spa Electrics products, the Matrix has been specifically designed for the Australian market and features an innovative design made with the highest quality components.” Since the pandemic they have seen a spike in retrofit product sales, as a result of homeowners investing money into their properties in lieu of overseas holidays. “Our retro fit range features three products which replace the vast majority of pool lights within the market; our GKRX surface mounted light and WNRX and EMRX niche lights,” he says. “Our retrofit range has been designed to provide customers with a high-quality product that is simple to install and provides a much-needed upgrade from old pool and/or spa lights, which is very attractive to customers who are looking for an easy solution with maximum result,” he says. “The majority of our customers are looking for a solution that not only transforms their swimming pool but also the entire backyard.”

pool lighting should ensure all the spaces read as one flowing integrated design. He says that outdoor lighting is needed so people can safely find their way around, but it is also important to create atmosphere in the outdoor leisure entertaining space. “Whether your idea of lighting a garden is a Les Vegas casino style or just a light to see the barbecue, outdoor leisure spaces are often the focus for our lifestyle,” says Storch. “In a country like Australia, it is likely a good percentage of our entertaining will be done during the evening and night, so lighting is a very important component of a project and should be considered in the early stages of design.” Outdoor lighting is now sometimes powered by solar, having the advantage of being energy efficient and not needing unsightly cables to link the lights. “Solar powered lighting, while a great idea, is still in the teething process and we tend to specify more conventional and reliable lighting types,” he says. “Solar lights are not as bright as electric lights, so they are generally not good for mood spotlighting or functional lighting. Electric lights are brighter with more control, warm or cool lights with broad or narrow beams can be utilised so they are more flexible for design purposes,” he says. “Functional lighting, that is bright LED lighting so that everything is seen, is often achieved with spot and flood lights. Ensure that they are placed in locations and high enough so that you do not look directly into them when entertaining. “Mood lighting is achieved by LED lighting placed within gardens and swimming pools. It is subtle lighting and used to draw either attention to the pool as a feature or to garden features such as a sculpture, a water feature or an accent plant or to create low light areas and washes of light to create a mood, often to simulate moonlight or star light.” In terms of pool lights, he says that gone are the days of halogen lights and their counterparts, the 300mm 240Volt protruding lights that in time break because they have been used as footholds for children getting out of pools.

“LED pool lights that are able to change colour, move and vibrate to the beat, can be used out of water and greatly extend the longevity and sustainability of the light. Both in and out of pools, LED lights have become much more popular and have replaced traditional lighting.”
Getting in the mood
“One of the applications I love using LED lights for is behind arching water, the light seems to bend with the water and as it flows and hits the pool water the light spreads with the effervescence.” Beacon Hill Lighting, Hunza and Gardens at Night are the LED products he specifies for gardens and external spaces, while he specifies Aquastar Evo2 LED lighting for pools. “Remember that our external spaces can be used day and night, and swimming pools are big water features and should be treated so – especially at night with lighting from both within the pool itself and in the gardens used as mood lighting to make the external areas dance and come alive to increase the usability of the external areas of our homes.”
Lens innovation eliminates hot spots
Waterco has designed and manufactured lights featuring a new approach to lens technology, with the aim of helping landscape architects, lighting experts, specifiers and photographers reduce hot spots, boost saturation and increase light transmission. “While it’s common knowledge that LEDs are long lasting, energy efficient light sources, they can be particularly challenging for lighting experts, specifiers and designers due to the unsightly hot spots they create,” explains George Flory, Waterco’s domestic water care product manager. “Hot spots are areas where direct light is concentrated, and they can detract from the overall visual appeal of the light.” Overcoming the traditional issue with LED lenses restricting the light output to unflattering hot spots, the BriteLux MK5 diffuser lens radiates light throughout the entire circumference of the lens. In fact, the lights features a diffused finish that emits 200 per cent more luminosity when compared to Waterco’s earlier LED lights equipped with a standard clear lens. 32 SPLASH! Smart phone control
Fluidra equipment category manager Darren Sharvell believes Australia is at the forefront of underwater lighting innovations. “For example, in the United States, they still use a fixed cable at installation, whereas the Australian market generally uses a quick disconnect cable system,” he says. “We also utilise easy-to-operate lighting control systems.” The integration of multicolour LEDs and light control systems has enabled homeowners to easily create costeffective light features. “This would of course need to be planned prior to the construction of the pool,” he adds. Sharvell says Fluidra’s new Halo Lite controller uses Bluetooth connectivity, putting control of pool lights literally in the palm of your hand. “Halo Lite is branded AstralPool, however it is compatible with both our AstralPool and Zodiac branded pool lights, as well as our competitors’ lights,” he says. “It’s controlled via the app and is also retrofittable. There is no need for a light transformer, as the Halo Lite is an all-in-one design.” Sharvell says there are more innovations likely in the world of pool lighting in the near future. In particular, he believes the future products will provide more controllability options with IoT products and even greater lighting solutions compatible with Google Home and Alexa application programming interfaces. n

Storch says one of the applications he loves using LED lights for is behind arching water. “The light seems to bend with the water

and as it flows and hits the pool water the light spreads with the effervescence.” Selective mood lighting. Illuminates some parts of the garden and leaves other parts unlit. Ambient lighting spilling from the street or from the house itself should also be considered with selective mood lighting. And more important than the light itself in this instance is the blackness in between the lighting. Strip or fairy lighting. Can be used functionally, say underneath the shelving of an outdoor bar so that the drinks are visible or to highlight – think fairy lights running through a beautiful tree to show its shape. Seven outdoor lighting tips • Lighting can be used to highlight a lovely part of your garden, but it can also be used to distract the eye from what you don’t want people to see, such as the garden shed, bin store or clothesline. • Colour lighting, if used sparingly, can work well by reinforcing a mood or to help highlight a feature. But unless you love Les Vegas, use sparingly. • Remember to incorporate the house itself in the outdoor lighting design. Lighting up the front façade or columns can create stunning effects and overflow lighting from a house can be caught and utilised externally. • Less is more, always! • The cheapest lighting option is to use candles or garden torches. A scattering of these will provide light and also give the garden a fantastic ambience. Also, they are easy to relocate as needed. • Remember that swimming pools are big water features and should be treated so, especially at night with lighting from within and outside the pool to make the external areas dance and come alive! • Have fun with your project. Remember you are the one that will use it. If you want fluorescent coloured lights everywhere to light up everything in the garden, go for it don’t worry what others think! Pink is an unusual colour for water, but it exists in Australia’s natural salt lakes. Image: Taylor Knights and James Carey
LEDs light pink pond installation Pond[er] — winner of the NGV’s 2021 Architecture Commission in the Grollo Equiset Garden at NGV International — is set to bring the pastel hues of Australia’s inland salt lakes to Melbourne’s bustling civic spaces. To achieve its intended pink tint, architectural firm Taylor Knights is collaborating with a cork and access flooring supplier to create custom colours that mirror the hues found in the country’s iconic salt lakes. “The main lighting of the installation is a recessed LED around its edge, defining the square and reinforcing the design reference of Sir Roy Ground’s open-air original courtyards,” says company director Peter Knights. The 21.5 x 11.5-metre, 200mm deep public art project is also designed to highlight the scarcity, importance and political implications of water as a natural resource. “The striking beauty of Australia’s inland salt lakes inspired the creation of a space to stop, reflect and think about our current ecological adversities,” says director James Taylor. “As architects, designers and artists, we have a fundamental responsibility to encourage our communities to begin to live, work and play in very different ways.”

These unique hues range from a bright Mediterranean summer look with Costa Mesa to a lush tropical villa feel with Crystal Cove. Highest quality, dot mounted and stain resistant – they will help you create an oasis for your clients. 3D Stone, says that being one of the largest direct importers and distributors of natural stone, pool tiles, mosaics and walling in Queensland and Northern NSW means they have what you want, when you want it – all at special trade rates.

Sunbather describes its Suntube-2 as the indestructible rigid solar pool heating system designed and made in Australia to withstand the harsh Australian environment. The Sunbather R&D team redesigned every component to eliminate weaknesses using encased tube connections and cam-locked junctions. Sunbather says subsequent pressure test results exceed all industry standards. The environmentally sustainable Suntube-2 panels are Climate Care Certified and backed by 45 years of experience, multiple SPASA awards, and an industry-leading 15-year warranty. The unique manifold design simplifies installation and provides the freedom to create the perfect layout for a pool or spa. Discreet, low-profile and closely-spaced air nozzles are available in white, grey and black to suit any interior finish – delivering a stunningly even bubble effect that will bring the water to life. AIS Water EcoLine
CONTACT: Marc or David: 0481 875 870
AIS Water’s EcoLine is a “best in class” inline chlorine generator designed for low-salinity disinfection for swimming pools. AIS Water says they have redefined the future by enabling inline chlorine generation via electrolysis from a TDS level as low as 1200ppm. With chlorine generation via electrolysis there is no need to transport, store or handle dangerous chemicals, and pool water does not need to be constantly dumped to stabilise water chemistry. The result is clean, clear pool water and millions of litres of pool water saved. CONTACT: www.aiswater.com.au
Supreme Heating Heatseeker Dualsun
Ascon Notmad rechargeable magnetic pool light The Notmad rechargeable, magnetic pool light provides light wherever you need it: in the pool, in the garden, camping and boating. 100 per waterproof and mobile. CONTACT: www.ascon.com.au
Supreme Heating has over 30 years of experience in the pool and spa heating industry, and the team is dedicated to sustainability and renewability, focusing on extending the clients’ swimming season and abating costs. Their Heatseeker Dualsun using cutting-edge technology is a testament to that. Their award-winning hybrid panel uses the abundance of energy radiating from the sun. The Dualsun cell simultaneously provides solar electricity and thermally heated water in one footprint. It can maintain the energy produced and allows for peak performance by up to 20 per cent. Compared to a standard PV, this solar cell can utilise up to four times as much of the sun’s power. CONTACT: Anthony Denahy: (03) 9460 4200; www.supremeheating.com.au

AT Fluid Management Jet-Wash regenerative media filter
AT Fluid Management, a Queensland-based Australian company, says their fully automated Jet-Wash regenerative media filter offers superior water quality as it filters to one micron; has greater energy efficiency with reduced maintenance process times due to the patented high pressure jet cleaning functions; offers greater water savings with approximately 90 per cent less water used during the cleaning process than a sand filter; and it has a smaller footprint. There is no need for a large backwash tank, just a relatively small sediment tank. They say Jet-Wash is a better option than a sand filter and also has advantages over direct competitors with significant long-term cost-, energy- and watersavings.
Unicum Transmission De Puissance Unimot 120
Unimot 120 is a state-of-the-art tubular motor for pool cover reels. Unicum says it is fully designed for pool applications and provides the best reliability on the market. The external control board can be easily installed in the post or in the technical room and it has a patented permanent magnetic brake (frictionless) to solve all issues related to traditional electromagnetic brakes. It has two auxiliary contacts related to the limit switch position, available to communicate with other pool devices (electrolyser, heat pump, etc.), and the mechanical setting of limit switches is easy and straightforward. A complete set of accessories ease installation and usage. CONTACT: Renald Gallis: 0404 894 960; renald@gallis.com.au

Aussie UnderCover Hidden underground pool cover systems
Having commenced installations in 2008, Nowra-based Aussie Undercover claim boasting rights as the first Australian-developed and made underground pool cover enclosure. They continue to manufacture in Nowra, while distributing throughout Australia and internationally and are in the process of setting up a national dealer network. The lid frame supplied in each kit can be covered with tiles up to 20mm thick or timber products up to 35mm thick. Kits are available in eight adjustable sizes and are individually customised to suit the product being used to conceal the lid frame. The system suits fibreglass, precast and concrete pools up to seven metres wide and are upgradable to semi remote-control and will soon have a solar panel upgrade. Boss Solar Rhino solar pool heating system
The Rhino solar pool heating system is built for Australia’s tough conditions. Boss says their Rhino panels are the most durable and affordable way to heat your pool. The highly efficient solar collectors can increase the water temperature by more than 10 degrees, allowing pool owners to enjoy up to six months of pool parties, relaxed swims and happy kids. BioGuard Dryden Aqua Integrated System
Dryden Aqua Integrated System (DAISY) was developed by marine biologists and is used in commercial aquariums worldwide and can now be part of sustainable swimming pool water treatment. The self-sterilising filter media can filter down to one micron, ensuring clearer and safer water without pathogenic bacteria, has stabilisation without the need for CYA, reduces oxidation demand by up to 80 per cent and prevents the formation of toxic disinfection by-products. CONTACT: Julian Quinn: 0418 178 424
Dab Eswim
The pump is the beating heart of the swimming pool since it moves the water for the purpose of filtration and treatment. A conventional pump, however, can be extremely expensive as it consumes more power than all the other devices combined. For this reason, Dab designed the highly energy-efficient Eswim electronic pump with low-consumption variable speed motor and hydraulics far superior to those of single-speed pumps. Dab says Eswim is the ideal solution for keeping down energy costs: it requires up to 90 per cent less power than a conventional pump at constant speed. CONTACT: www.dabpumps.com.au
Daisy Pool Covers Below Ground Box SM
The latest design in Daisy’s Below Ground Roller range, the Below Ground Box SM is perfect for small or narrow pools less than nine metres long. Gunyama wins architecture awards The Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre received two awards at this year’s Australian Institute of Architects Awards (NSW Chapter) on Friday 01 July: The Lord Mayor’s Prize ( Joint Winner) and an award for Public Architecture. The result of an ongoing partnership between Andrew Burges Architects and Grimshaw with TCL in collaboration with the City of Sydney. Gunyama’s design evokes the experience of swimming in Sydney’s ocean rock pools, providing amenity to one of Sydney’s most densely

populated precincts, built on disused industrial land. It is Australia’s first recreation centre to achieve a Five Green Star rating, and accessibility and inclusion are the centre’s main design priorities. The jury noted that “Gunyama reinvigorates the public pool typology, drawing from the civic and landscape tradition of Sydney’s coastal pools, to celebrate the pleasures of swimming for all. Not simply an aquatic centre but a place where the community congregates and connects.” Gunyama will now go into the national architecture awards. Swim schools
Sydney swim school argues for reclassification during lockdown Karen Bentley, director of Nepean Swim & Fitness in Sydney has spoken about the negative impact on learning to swim programs of the enforced lockdown of public pools. In particular, she is urging the state government to reclassify swim schools as an essential service to keep children safer. Her comments come on the back of a series of studies that have found properly disinfected swimming pool water deactivates coronavirus, and zero reported incidents of covid transmission having been recorded in indoor pools. “Swim schools have been closed in lockdown, despite other early learning settings remaining open, and despite the proven safety of the indoor learn to swim centre environment,” says Bentley. “A recent UK study showed that chlorine deactivates the coronavirus in 30 seconds and a US study of over 300,000 patrons of indoor swimming pools reported zero incidents of covid-19 infections in the aquatic environment.” Earlier, Griffith University research found similar results. Bentley says that while there are a number of important drowning prevention initiatives, learning to swim is by far the primary driver to control our national drowning statistics. “Swim safety is achieved by skill repetition, and crucial swimming skills learnt are lost without practice. Twelve children aged 0-4 years drowned in

Australia in 2019/20, a 37 per cent decrease on the previous year – we are very concerned that repeated lockdowns will have a tragic influence on these figures,” she says. “We believe that swim schools should be recognised as an essential educational facility and should be treated the same way as pre-school and other educational institutions.”
Payroll limit exemption
She also believes swim schools should be exempt from the payroll limit rendering them ineligible for government assistance during lockdown in the same way that tourism, accommodation and hospitality are exempt. She adds that despite a 100 per cent decrease in income during lockdown, many NSW swim schools are ineligible for the recently announced government assistance, threatening their ability to reopen after lockdown. “At least cafes and restaurants can serve takeaway, whereas we are unable to trade at all. It just doesn’t seem right. And we are not alone – many local businesses face the same difficulties; the exemptions seem pretty arbitrary.” Emily McNeill, general manager of the Australian Swim Schools Association says that swim schools provide essential life-saving skills to their local communities. “These prolonged lockdowns halt this process and prevent vital education and impact the health and overall well-being of our children,” says McNeill. “Faced with zero revenue and standing down staff, swim schools are concerned about the future of their businesses and long-term industry effects.” Lindsay McGrath, CEO of SPASA Australia says that swimming provides an immense benefit to our health and wellbeing. “Whether it be at public pool or at home, enjoying and exercising in a pool or spa is an integral part of our active Australian culture. It is crucial that we continue to promote the benefits of keeping our facilities open and pools clean and healthy during the pandemic,” he says.

Construction
Spring opening for new Christchurch pool Christchurch’s new $22 million pool complex, Te Pou Toetoe, will open in October, with construction set to finish ahead of time and within budget. “We’re very pleased that work has progressed faster than expected,” says Christchurch City Council head of recreation, sports and events Nigel Cox. “Despite the considerable challenges of recent times, the project team have delivered the facility ahead of the original target opening, and within budget. In preparation for the opening we’re currently recruiting and training the team who’ll be working there. “A great community facility is more than just a building – it’s the team, how they provide for the needs of the community and make it an enjoyable place to visit.” Both the design and construction have progressed extremely well, says Steve Hastie, national design manager and project director of construction company Apollo Projects. “Delivering community facilities is something we truly enjoy, and it’s awesome when all involved are focused on delivering an amazing facility that not only optimises value for money, but delivers what will be such a fun and inclusive facility for the community,” he says. “Working with Christchurch City Council in a partnership approach has contributed significantly to making this project a success.” It’s been a year since the first sod was turned on Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool. The facility will have a multi-use 25-metre lane pool, a deep-water splash pool, a family spa pool, a learn-to-swim pool, and a pool and water deck for toddlers. There will also be a kitchen and two community rooms, while outside there will be picnic tables, tennis, basketball and multi-use courts, cycle stands, parking and plenty of open areas for all ages to enjoy. Planning
WACA pool canned City of Perth has rejected the plan to build a swimming pool as part of the WACA cricket ground redevelopment. The council voted unanimously to rescind a deal reached under the previous stateappointed commissioners that would have committed $25 million to a redevelopment including a public swimming pool. Perth Mayor Basil Zempilas defended the decision while Premier Mark McGowan has said the city’s decision makes no sense, a view shared by the WACA chief executive Christina Matthews. Zempilas says everybody who was a party to the deal knew the aquatic swimming facility at the WACA was always subject to the business case being presented, and that he was surprised by the premier’s statement. An ACIL Allen report presented to the council estimated the WACA aquatic facility would cost ratepayers $152 million over 40 years and the annual subsidy over the long-term financial plan would require a three per cent increase in the rates yield each year. The report also found the operating costs would reduce the capacity to operate and maintain existing facilities, and said there was no “unmet need” established for the pool. The city chief executive Michelle Reynolds recommended they
82 SPLASH! August/September 2021
not proceed, and the council agreed, seeking to find an alternate location for an “iconic, bold and contemporary” aquatic facility.
Pearce funding controversy Member of parliament for the WA electorate of Pearce, Christian Porter, has labelled the move short-sighted. Porter himself has become embroiled in a different controversy regarding swimming pools, as Freedom of Information (FOI) documents revealed by the ABC rekindled pressure over the “sports rorts” affair. His marginal electorate was the beneficiary of two promised pools prior to the 2019 election, with funding coming from the Female Facilities and Water Safety Stream (FFWSS) designed to build female change rooms, a program which had no guidelines, no tender process and required no application form. Documents released under FOI revealed considerable doubts from the Department of Health about one of the pools in Pearce – the Northern Suburbs Aquatic Facility project which received $5 million from the FFWSS fund – including that it is a significant risk as it will not commence until 2026-27 – four years after the project funding is finished – in a future suburb which is still in the planning stage. In all, 14 pools were identified across the country as part of the funding controversy.

Senior Council Chris Ronalds AO will head an independent panel of female experts to investigate issues relating to women and girls’ experience and the advancement of swimming for all athletes across the sport. This follows Madeline Groves’ accusations of coaching staff’s inappropriate behaviour towards Chris Ronalds AO SC female swimmers and a culture of body shaming. Groves’ accusations spurred a number of other female swimmers to come forward with similar stories. Groves subsequently withdrew from the Olympic trials. Following the accusations Swimming Australia’s chief executive Alex Baumann said he did not know if swimming had institutional problems with women but that he would investigate to determine the veracity of the claims. This appointment is part of that process. Ronalds is a prominent Sydney barrister who is highly regarded in discrimination and harassment law, employment law and administrative law. She played a pivotal role in the development of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. The panel has been formed to assist Swimming Australia to promote a culture of continuous improvement and accountability. Ronalds says she is pleased to have been appointed in the role. “This is important work and a continuation of the professional commitment I have to equality and accessibility. The community can be assured this will be an independent process and I look forward to presenting some outcomes that will ensure swimming will be a safe and successful environment in Australia in the future.” Ronalds will select other panel members to assist with the scope of work. Among the issues to be investigated are: the structures and systems across Australian swimming; the behaviour, conduct and practises of people in authority; ways to support the advancement of women in high performance coaching roles; how to effectively address issues concerning performance physique in sport; and the complaints process across the organisational structure of Swimming Australia. “While the focus is on females in the swimming community, our panel will work for the betterment of all in the swimming community,” she says. “With the work of this panel comes real opportunity for all sports to learn and grow.” Swimming Australia board member Tracy Stockwell was charged with appointing the Chair. “The inquiry will be forward-looking and solution-focussed with an understanding of issues facing the swimming community today within a performance environment,” Stockwell says. “Ms Ronalds is the perfect person for this job. We are very lucky to have someone with her experience and expertise. We know Ms Ronalds is solution-focussed but also aware and well versed in the process that it takes to get this work right.”

The importance of pool and spa maintenance training for hotel operators By Spiros Dassakis
T
he operation of swimming pools and spas is a highly involved and sometimes complex process. An operator must ensure the health and safety of their staff and guests are underpinned by proper processes across all areas of the pool and spa facility. While some of the duties associated with maintaining pools and spas might be outsourced to external service providers, it is essential that one or more team members has an adequate understanding of how a pool and spa operates and the maintenance functions that are required. By performing maintenance regularly, minor changes in conditions and wear on equipment can be managed to reduce the incidence of unsafe conditions and downtime due to equipment repairs.
Operating the pool and spa environment
As a public facility, the operator must ensure that the pool and spa is under the control and management of a person who is knowledgeable and competent to operate the plant and maintain the pool water quality. Pool and spa facilities will have different requirements that may be dictated by the legislation, design and nature of operation of the facility, bather loads and operating hours. Currently in Australia there is legislation in place to regulate and guide the operations of public pool and spa facilities in each jurisdiction. Aligned to these are Australian standards, occupational health and safety requirements, and many other important guidance documents. 84 SPLASH! August/September 2021
Pool and spa needs vary with the actual size of the facility. Whatever its size, maintaining a pool and spa requires key staff to be trained to understand and interpret pool operations and water conditions. Peripheral staff should also be exposed to training in plant operation and water treatment measures required to maintain water quality. They should receive proper training to gain an appropriate understanding of basic water chemistry and the testing, water treatment, plant operation and the general procedures required to maintain good water quality. A dedicated team member should be appointed to look after pool and spa facilities at each establishment. This person should have the responsibility to oversee the overall operation of pool plant and equipment and ensure that appropriate operational and maintenance activities are carried out. The pool operator should ensure that those left in charge have a working knowledge of the regulations and can ensure that the treatment plant continues to provide pool water that meets these requirements. They should also be able to identify problems and know how to obtain corrective advice. Guests are not the only ones who enjoy swimming pools. Pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and other parasites can flourish in pools and spas unless the appropriate steps are taken to control their numbers. Pools are used by many people of varying age and health status. Bathers introduce a range of pollutants to pool water, including micro-organisms, saliva, fat, urine,
commercial feature
skin, hair, sunscreen lotion and other foreign matter. Operators have a duty of care to provide facilities that are safe, hygienic and comfortable for bathers. So, it makes good business and risk sense to have a sound knowledge of pool and spa maintenance and operating procedures.
Poor training and techniques can increase costs
With increasing demands to reduce expenditure, there is always going to be ongoing pressure to find more costeffective ways to operate swimming pools and spas. Water, energy and pool water treatment costs are very real concerns for operators but there is a real risk that where the consequences of alterations and variations to limit these costs are not properly understood, disaster can follow. Lack of training and knowledge about energy efficiency and water sustainability can increase the cost of operations dramatically. Operators and staff should be trained to obtain and benefit from the maximum life from their facility equipment as well as operate them in a cost-effective way. Poor maintenance and operation can often be attributed to a lack of expertise or knowledge or lack of resources. Either way, it can represent a significant failure to a facility and may require the operator to spend
unnecessary expenditure on the facility. This may include new filters, plumbing, pumps, tiling, grouting, calorifiers, steelwork in the pool hall, heating and ventilation plant, lighting and electrical work.

Water loss in Dubai hotel calls for total filter replacement ABOVE: Clean filtered swimming pool water is a crucial resource for the luxury Zabeel Saray Hotel
T
here’s nothing worse than losing water – it is the most precious resource, as we in Australia know only too well. In the desert, it is the stuff of life and death. Dubai, the largest city in The United Arab Emirates (UAE), is on the edge of the Arabian Desert, so they know every drop counts. Dubai’s break-neck growth presents challenges to large-scale development — especially those boasting luxury swimming pools and aquatic facilities. One of the
greatest hurdles to sustaining 1.8 million people in an extremely arid location is water, which in the coastal city is abundant but not potable.
Water losses in luxury hotel lagoon pool
One of the five-star hotels on Dubai’s world-famous manmade archipelago, Palm Jumeirah, is the Zabeel Saray Hotel, designed to replicate sumptuous Ottoman luxury. Unfortunately, its 4000m3 lagoon was leaking precious water.

commercial feature The original plant room installed in 2011 consisted of four 2000mm horizontal filters installed in two plant rooms, all of which had started leaking within just a few years of installation. Despite several attempts to repair them, engineering staff were unable to rectify the problem. They needed a reliable filtration system that could be installed without disrupting the daily operations of the luxury hotel. “Replacing the faulty filters with the same sized units was not an option, as this would have required breaking up several public areas of the hotel to gain access to the plant room, install the filters, then rebuild,” says Waterco Europe’s sales director Jo Ainsworth. “With restricted access to the plant rooms, they were looking for a solution that would not disturb the daily operations of the hotel in any way. It was also crucial that work was carried out in a well-structured and timely manner,” she says.
Multiple smaller filters
Well-known local provider Compass, which is the largest stockholder of Waterco equipment in UAE, proposed a different solution. Break up the old filters onsite, remove them, and replace them with multiple smaller diameter filters. Working in conjunction with Compass, Waterco Europe offered a solution to supply 36 customised SMD900h deep bed filters designed to fit within
ww

the location without the need for any structural disruption to the hotel. “Crucially, these filters needed to match the required flow rate, velocity and bed depth of the existing filters,” says Ainsworth. “Being only 900mm in diameter, the SMD900h filters are easy to manoeuvre on to the site and install in the plantroom with minimal disruption to the hotel’s dayto-day operations.” She says Compass and Waterco were the only companies to offer a viable solution of fixing multiple small filters without disturbing the daily hotel activity. “All of the other companies were proposing to replace the originals with like-for-like filters, which would have been a major disruption to guests and hotel staff. This would have been a very costly option that would have taken much longer due to the required demolition and re-building works,” she says. Waterco Europe successfully replaced the filters within a short time frame, with no need for costly reconstruction works and no disruption or closures of the hotel’s coveted public areas. “The lagoon water is now crystal clear, and the leaking issues are resolved. An added benefit is that maintenance has become significantly easier with multiple smaller filters. If in future one needs servicing, we simply isolate that particular filter and keep the others running without affecting water quality or having to close the pool.” n Contact: www.waterco.com.au

New profile helps modernise aquatic centre envelopes
A new Flat Pan profile is available in the popular KingZip standing seam roof and wall solution from Kingspan Insulated Panels, as an alternative to the existing Micro Rib profile. Both profiles have the capability to be curved in unique variations such as convex, concave, wave or tapered. The new Flat Pan profile is perfect for projects that require a sleek and streamlined façade. Created onsite using a mobile manufacturing fleet, the KingZip building envelope system enables project requirements to be achieved in terms of aesthetics, specification, thermal, acoustic and fire performance, and construction. Available in cover widths 200mm to 600mm, in aluminium or Colorbond steel. The image here is of Caulfield Grammar Aquatic Centre. Contact: www.kingspan.com/au
