It’s a Winter Wonder Island!

There is no better time to head to Galveston Island than the holiday season. The island offers great weather, incredible events, world-class attractions, award-winning Gulf seafood, and a historic downtown full of unique gifts for your shopping pleasure.

The Galveston holiday season is full of tradition – from its world-renowned Dickens on the Strand Victorian Christmas festival to Festival of Lights at Moody Gardens – but this year, the island will offer some exciting new additions to make for an even more festive winter getaway.

Galveston Island is the “Winter Wonder Island” of Texas, featuring more than 50 days of holiday festivities and more than 1,000 holiday events during the winter season. The island is home to the largest holiday lighting event on the Gulf Coast, Festival of Lights at Moody Gardens, as well as the nationally known Victorian Christmas festival Dickens on The Strand among many other attractions. New this holiday season, Galveston will be a featured host location to Miracle on the Island, an international rotating pop-up bar series serving a themed menu of festive drinks to holiday enthusiasts through December 31st. The Miracle Pop-Up Holiday Bar – a prestigious nod in the arts and culture scene – just announced its 2018 host locations, which includes 80 bars around the world and Galveston’s own Daiquiri Time Out is among the list.

In addition, Downtown Galveston will be illuminated by an extensive lighting and décor overhaul that will encompass the main corridors of the charming historic downtown district from Strand to Postoffice Streets, making it the perfect backdrop for a winter escape. Plus, one of the island’s most popular holiday attractions, ICE LAND, will return to Moody Gardens with a brand new theme: “Pole to Pole.” The theme will include a festive journey from the North to the South Pole featuring polar bears, penguins, humpback whales, snowy owls, walrus, and reindeer.

Festival of Lights at Moody Gardens

Through January 6th There’s nothing that better represents the festive nature of the holidays than vibrant Christmas lights brightening the dark of night. In true Texas style, where everything has to be bigger, Moody Gardens delivers the largest holiday lighting event on the Gulf Coast. Now in its 17th year, Festival of Lights features a one-mile-long trail with more than 100 sound-enhanced animated light displays and one million lights. In addition to taking in all the lights, show off your balance on the outdoor ice-skating rink, or get some thrills snow tubing down the Arctic Ice Slide. Fun for the whole family, you won’t find anything else like the Festival of Lights in the Lone Star State. Moody Gardens is located at 1 Hope Blvd., Galveston, moodygardens.org.

ICE LAND: Pole to Pole

Through January 6th Admire larger-than-life statues of polar bears, penguins, humpback whales, snowy owls, walrus, and of course, reindeer as you explore Ice Land at Moody Gardens, a wintery wonderland carved from two million pounds of ice. Crafted by a team of 25 master ice carvers from Harbin, China, this year’s version of Ice Land takes guests on a journey from the North to South poles.

The CAA Ruijing Ice Carving Team will create a giant ice slide that will take guests on a glacial journey and, of course, create the infamous Shivers Ice Bar serving up the coolest

cocktails.

Covering 28,000 square feet and kept at a chilly nine degrees, Ice Land is one of the coolest attractions on the Texas Gulf Coast. Moody Gardens is located at 1 Hope Blvd., Galveston, moodygardens. org.

Warm Up at Moody Gardens

While visiting Moody Gardens this holiday season, you can warm up with a creative and fun cocktail menu at The Lobby Bar. These include “Snow Flake” (Stoli Salted Karamel Vodka, Kerry Gold Irish Creme Liqueur, garnished with a mint), “Santa’s Hot Chocolate” (hot chocolate all grown up with Kerry Gold Irish Creme Liqueur), “Chili Chocolate White Christmas” (classic made with a little spice, Stoli Vodka, Kahlua Chili Chocolate Liqueur, and half-n-half), “Rudolf-Tini” (Blue Chair Rum, Hazelnut Liqueur and Stoli Vodka garnished with cinnamon sticks and a cherry), “Cranberry Margarita” (a holiday touch to a classic) and more. Miracle Pop-Up Bar

Through December 31st Miracle, the beloved Christmas-themed pop-up bar, launched in 2014 in New York City, will continue spreading holiday cheer around the globe in 2018, as the brand celebrates its five-year anniversary. This year, Miracle will launch in over 80 locations around the world with Sippin’ Santa expanding to multiple locations in partnership with notable tiki-connoisseur Jeff “Beachbum” Berry. Downtown Lanterns & Lights plus Giant Snow Globe & More Fun

Through January 2nd This holiday season, historic Downtown Galveston will be illuminated by lighting and décor encompassing the main corridors of this charming 36-block district. Downtown Lanterns & Lights will feature a magical display of lights and other holiday-themed attractions in Saengerfest Park and beyond including an interactive photo frame and a giant snow globe for visitors to enjoy on designated weekends. The photo props will be available December 9th, 16th, and 23rd.

Lights will stretch throughout Downtown from 20th to 25th streets on The Strand as well as along 23rd and Postoffice streets. In addition, visitors will find unique holiday gifts at the district’s many boutiques, art galleries and antique shops set among beautiful Victorian architecture.

Cirque Joyeux Noel Dinner Show at Moody Gardens

December 21stJanuary 4th Enjoy a spectacular, exhilarating and joyous celebration of the holiday season with an enchanting mix of food, circus, and music. This original holiday spectacular is fun for the entire family and features a stellar cast of international circus and variety performers from all corners of the world. Dickens on the Strand

November 30thDecember 2nd Don your finest frock coat or hoop skirt and join the festivities at the 45th Annual Dickens on The Strand, when Downtown Galveston is transformed into the Victorian-era London of Charles Dickens. Take in the Strand Historic District’s gorgeous architecture as you listen to roaming carolers, bagpipers, and musicians. Relish non-stop entertainment on the six stages, delicious food and drink, whimsical parades, and unique shopping for Victorian-inspired clothing, crafts, and holiday decorations. Don’t miss any of the fun and family-friendly events like the Holiday Handbell Concert and the crowd-pleasing Victorian Bed Races.

Holiday with the Cranes

December 8th-9th For a unique holiday experience, spend a wonderful, winter weekend in Galveston celebrating the return of the island’s wintering Sandhill Cranes at Holiday with the Cranes. The weekend will be chock-full of indoor and outdoor nature activities combined with the ambiance of historic Galveston Island! Holiday with the Cranes is presented by the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council, a nonprofit volunteer organization that helps connect people with nature experiences and outdoor adventures, and promotes the value of natural habitats and resources in the Galveston Island area. Holiday in the Park at Saengerfest Park

December 8th Join this holiday season for Galveston Holiday in the Park where the whole family can enjoy a full day filled with festive holiday tunes from local and area school choirs, bands, and amazing church choirs. This is free to attend. Performances will be held in Saengerfest Park at 23rd and Strand St., 10:45am-6pm.

Spend some time shopping for those last minute gifts at your favorite Galveston Strand shops as well as festive vendors located on 23rd Street.

Children will also be able to visit and take pictures with Santa in the Park 1-5pm.

Santa Train at the Galveston Railroad Museum

December 15th Come enjoy an afternoon with Santa!

Santa arrives at 12 noon and will be available in the Depot to meet with children

and take pictures until 2pm.

Train rides on the Harborside Express will begin at 12 noon with Santa’s arrival. Special event admission is $12 for adults, children age 12 and under are free. Tickets to ride the train are $5 for ages 2 and up. The Galveston Railroad Museum is located at 2602 Santa Fe Place, Downtown Galveston. Santa’s Night Out Benefits The Galveston Seafarers Center Patrons

December 22nd, 7pm-2am, come out and have fun and make a difference at this year’s Santa’s Night Out. Are you looking for a way to get on Santa’s good side this year? Santa’s Night Out is your ticket to not getting a lump of coal. The annual pub crawl and supply drive, benefiting the Galveston Seafarer Center, returns for a night of pre-holiday fun and festivities through the streets and pubs of Galveston.

The public is invited to join in their finest Santa suits, reindeer outfits, or elf attire, and take to the streets for cold ales, warm toddies, and fine friendship.

Participants to this year’s event are encouraged to bring items of necessity for the men and women who make their life on ships. Supplies can be brought to the first stop at Murphy’s Irish Pub, 213 22nd St., Downtown Galveston.

The Galveston Seafarers Center is a non-profit, multi-denominational organization aimed at serving the needs of men and women who live and work at sea. T ​ he importance of the seafarer and his or her care while in Galveston is important to the center. These men and women are fathers and brothers, sisters and wives, uncles and mothers, all of whom are far from home. Seafarers Centers around the world make it a top priority to ensure these type of services are available at their facilities.

The Grand 1894 Opera House’s spectacular holiday season includes two very special matinee performances of “A Charlie Brown Christmas Live on Stage,” Sunday, December 23rd at 1pm and 4pm.

“A Charlie Brown Christmas Live on Stage,” based on the characters created by Charles Schulz, is a brand-new touring production. It features everyone’s favorite Peanuts gang: Linus, Lucy, Snoopy, Sally and more - all led by the lovable Charlie Brown - as they discover the true meaning of Christmas. When Charlie Brown becomes discouraged by the materialism of the season, Lucy convinces him to direct the neighborhood Christmas play.

In typical Charlie Brown fashion, things go awry and it becomes Linus’ responsibility to save the day and to remind every one of the real message of the holiday.

Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”

The Grand 1894 Opera House’s holiday season performances continue Friday, November 30th at 8pm and Saturday, December 1st at 3pm with the beloved and ever-popular Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” on stage.

Since 1843 when it was first published, Charles Dickens’ timeless tale of hope and redemption has enchanted audiences around the world. Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future all come together in a delightful and heart-warming theatrical performance that showcases stunning sets, lush costumes, and plenty of music and dance.

“All Is Calm, The Christmas Truce Of 1914”

The Grand 1894 Opera House presents a heartrending retelling of Christmas, 1914 when the Allied forces and German soldiers laid down their arms to celebrate – together – Christmas in “All is Calm The Christmas Truce of 1914.”

The performance is set for Sunday, December 9th at 4pm.

This performance showcases the powerful historic event and astounding moment during World War I when – together – the Allied forces and German soldiers laid down their weapons to celebrate Christmas Day, 1914. Together, they shared food and drink, sang carols, and played soccer.

“All Is Calm” weaves together the first-hand accounts relayed by WWI soldiers with patriot music, trench songs, and Christmas carols, and “puts a human face on WWI.” (San Francisco Globe) In addition, “this beautiful jewel has been made brighter, more precious in the best sense of the word. What is unchanged is its quiet power to illustrate peace on Earth.”(Minneapolis Star Tribune) This performance is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and Texas Commission on the Arts.

“The Nutcracker” and Afternoon Tea

An annual holiday favorite that delights audiences of all ages - City Ballet of Houston’s presentation of “The Nutcracker” returns on Saturday, December 15th with performances at 2pm and 6:30pm and a Sunday matinee, December 16th at 2pm.

“The Nutcracker” tells the story of a girl who dreams of a Nutcracker Prince, a Sugar Plum Fairy and a fierce battle against a Mouse King.

Following the two afternoon performances, audiences are encouraged to also experience the “behind the scenes magic” of “The Nutcracker.”

Look forward to hearing a brief presentation about the ballet and having the opportunity to meet the City Ballet of Houston’s dancers. This special presentation is included with your ticket to either the Saturday or Sunday matinee performance.

In addition to attending one of three outstanding performances of “The Nutcracker,” families can also look forward to the delightful opportunity to attend “The Nutcracker Afternoon Tea.” This popular and festive annual tradition will be held on Saturday, December 15th at 12:30pm. The 45th Annual Festival Returns November 30th-December 2nd to The Strand District

For 45 years, Galveston Historical Foundation’s Dickens on The Strand festival has highlighted Downtown Galveston’s Victorian-era architecture while providing a one-of-a-kind holiday destination filled with the sights and sounds of Charles Dickens’ work. This year’s event continues that tradition with new entertainers and events, returning favorites, and family-friendly programming.

This year’s festival begins Friday, November 30th with free admission to Fezziwig’s Beer Hall from 5-9pm, and continues with ticketed admission Saturday, December 1st 10am-9pm, and Sunday, December 2nd 12 noon-6pm.

Tickets purchased at the gate are $15 for adults and $9 for youth. Discounted tickets for GHF members are available for $10 in advance or $12 at the gate.

Attendees in Victorian costumes receive $8 entry.

The annual holiday street festival, based on 19th-century Victorian London, features parades, non-stop entertainment on multiple stages, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers, and a host of other entertainers. Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink,

Oliver ‘Ollie’ Dickens – Great-great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens British actor Ollie Dickens, who recently graduated from LAMDA, one of the finest drama training academies in the world, and having previously graduated from the University of York with honors in writing, directing, and performance, makes his return to Galveston for this year’s festival. Ollie’s love for his heritage began 20 years ago when he first arrived on the island and had a minor role as Tiny Tim during his father’s dramatic readings of “A Christmas Carol.”

He is the latest in a long tradition of Dickens descendants to participate in the festival and is looking forward to committing the same level of energy, intensity, and flair to his readings as his great-great-great grandfather would have done… if at all possible!

Dickens After Dark Holders of this limited ticket will gain access to a private event hidden within the Dickens on The Strand grounds. Held on Saturday, December 1st, 8-10pm, guests will receive the location a week before the event and enjoy unique performances, drink, and revelry for this new addition to the 45th annual Victorian event, hosted

by British actor, and great-great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens, Oliver ‘Ollie’ Dickens.

A Dickens Soiree at 1892 Bishop’s Palace Featuring specialty acts, award-winning performers, and carefully curated food and drink options, last year’s soiree was one of the weekend’s highlights, and it’s back again for 2018!

Held at the breathtaking 1892 Bishop’s Palace on Friday, November 30th at 6:30pm, attendees will enjoy live music by Houston’s Two Star Symphony, a special acrobatics presentation by Cirque La Vie, and appearances by special guests including a reading by ‘Ollie’ Dickens, greatgreat-great-grandson of Charles Dickens. Tickets are $75.

Breakfast with Dickens The great-great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens, Jane Monk, isn’t just coming to this year’s event to take in the sights and share her

heritage, she’s also there to cook a traditional English breakfast!

Join Jane, and the Island’s favorite award-winning chef Mary Bass, at the beautiful 1892 Bishop’s Palace on Saturday, December 1st (8am) or Sunday, December 2nd (10am).

Fezziwig’s Friday Night Mr. Fezziwig was everything Ebenezer wasn’t, and you can pay tribute to his jovial personality at the Fezziwig’s Beer Hall. Join Friday evening, November 30th, 5-9pm, for specialty acts, hearty brews, and new friends all hosted by Dickens descendant Jane Monk.

There will also be a specialty cocktail chosen from Cedric Dickens’ book “Drinking With Dickens.”

Admission is free for this lively start to the 45th anniversary.

Festival Highlights

Along with browsing the many booths and vendors, the festival weekend also hosts a multitude of spirited fun with events such as the crowd favorite Whimsical Whisker Revue (a facial hair contest for the bearded and the dandy), the Dickens Victorian Bed Races, Victorian Costume Contest, and daily parades through Galveston’s National Historic Landmark Strand District.

Special events also include: Salute To Sunset onboard the 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA The Texas Seaport Museum transforms to a London wharf for this toast to the end of the day and beginning of the evening. The 1877 Tall Ship ELISSA welcomes you aboard Saturday, December 1st at 4:30pm for heavy appetizers, cocktails, cannon fire, and special guests leading up to Saturday night’s Pickwick’s Lanternlight Parade.

Holiday Handbell Concerts The 1859 St. Joseph’s Church, the state’s first wooden built church, well known for its exceptional acoustics, hosts three holiday handbell concerts on Friday, November 30th at 5:30pm, 7pm,

and 8:30pm.

Saint Arnold’s Strand Walking Tours Learn about the history of The Strand and enjoy some of Saint Arnold Brewing Company’s signature ales during this new tour. Held during Dickens on The Strand on November 30th (7pm), December 1st (11am and 4:30pm) and December 2nd (3pm), you’ll visit three festival pubs as you walk through the National Historic Landmark district with your guide and enjoy some of Saint Arnold Brewing Company’s signature ales during this tour.

Tickets are $35 per person and include three complimentary beers. Advanced registration encouraged.

Victorian Bed Races Sunday, December 2nd at 4:30pm, fortune and glory await one lucky team at the 2018 Dickens on The Strand! The annual Victorian bed race is always a crowd favorite and pits 5-person teams against each other for a footrace down Galveston’s historic streets.

Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them” by Christopher Durang will be on stage through December 8th with a Sunday matinee on December 2nd at 2pm.

Christopher Durang turns political humor upside down with this raucous and provocative satire about America’s growing homeland “insecurity.” “Why Torture Is Wrong, and the People Who Love Them” tells the story of a young woman suddenly in crisis: Is her new husband, whom she married when drunk, a terrorist? Or just crazy? Or both? Is her father’s hobby of butterfly collecting really a cover for his involvement in a shadow government? Why does her mother enjoy going to the theatre so much? Does she seek mental escape, or is she insane? Honing in on our private terrors both at home and abroad, Durang oddly relieves our fears in this black comedy for an era of yellow, orange, and red alerts.

Save the date for this fun Nature Walk-About! Start the new year with some beautiful nature and family-friendly fun outdoor activities. The total distance for this walk will be about 3.5 miles and the surfaces will be mostly trails plus some pavement. Learn about the coastal prairie: How big is it? Is it growing or vanishing? Learn about its freshwater ponds and the critters that use them you might be surprised!

What role does fire play in the health of our coastal prairie? You can also throw seed balls to help restore the coastal prairie. Get your Coastal Prairie Passport stamped at each stop. Experience the coastal prairie’s awesome stillness and beauty.

Plus, there will be lots of fun activities for all ages.

A light breakfast will be served at 8:15am.

Taste the subtle nature at Galveston Island State Park. Ranger Lisa will lead a short presentation and prairie hike about edible plants. Relive the journey of natives and early settlers, foraging and celebrating the season. This includes modern applications for ultimate naturalists knowledge.

December 8th (1-2pm): Geocaching 101 - At this high-tech treasure hunting workshop you will learn high-tech treasure hunting basics and find clues to your next wild adventure. Learn how to find the hidden treasure within the park and around the globe with this short, activity-based program about geocaching.

December 29th, January 5th, 12th, 26th (3-4pm): Bay Tower Hike - Overlook Galveston Bay and explore the waters below at this hike!

You will be casting nets, getting your hands muddy, and tasting edible plants of Galveston Bay on your way to an observation tower.

January 1st (1:30-3pm): First Day Paddle - Come out for a free adult paddling lesson and guided tour on the first day of 2019! The Friends of Galveston Island State Park provides a great experience for ages 13 years and older on the water with a guide. Reserve your spot for quick instructions, free gear rental, and a guided trip with Ranger Lisa into a protected cove of Galveston Bay. January 1st (5-6:30pm): Star Party - This is an astronomy basics course with an identification hike and stories. Do you know your stars? Come out where you can see the star party where they will show you some cool ways to learn the stars.

January 4th, February 1st (5:30-6:30pm): Star Gazing - The stars at night, are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas! Do you know your stars? Come out and learn some cool ways to learn them all.

A Hogwarts Christmas Feast

“An Offshore Holiday” at Family Days on Ocean Star Oil Rig Museum

December 8th (12 noon-2pm): “Cotton’s Seafood: A Cajun Autobiographical Cookbook” Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with Jim LaBove and his new Cajun cookbook.

Spanning five years of research, interviews, writing, and planning, “Cotton’s Seafood” is a cookbook like no other.

Jim LaBove recounts the story of his childhood in the mid 20th century, documenting an oft-overlooked segment of Cajun culture: Bayou Cajuns, the descendants of Acadian immigrants who settled in the marshy coasts of Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana.

The recipes cover a wide variety of authentic Cajun dishes from his mother Cora, using the ingredients and methods that were available to the people of the area at the time. As you learn to cook gumbo, court-bouillon, peach cobbler, and much more, like a true Cajun, you will also learn about the rough but rewarding lifestyle that inspired the people who developed these dishes.

The book is named for the locally-renowned fishing and shrimping company that Mr. LaBove’s father founded in the early 20th century, and is gorgeously illustrated with the author’s field sketches, contemporary photographs, and maps of bayou Cajun territory.

by Col. Kelley Crooks USAF (Ret.), and Mark Lardas Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with Col. Kelley Crooks USAF (Ret.), and Mark Lardas and their new book about the historic ships at Seawolf Park on Pelican Island.

The American Undersea Warfare Center at Seawolf Park in Galveston, Texas is home to two World War II warships, the USS Cavalla, an attack submarine; and the destroyer-escort USS Stewart.

The summer of 1944 was the turning point of World War II. Operation Overlord, the landing at Normandy, had begun, and naval battles raged on in the Pacific. In the midst of the war, the attack submarine USS Cavalla, out on its initial patrol near the Philippines, became the only submarine to gain revenge on a Japanese carrier that attacked Pearl Harbor. The USS Stewart protected

Allied convoys from German U-boat wolf packs patrolling the North Atlantic.

For nearly 75 years, stories abound about these warships that served to preserve our liberty in World War II, and now serve as the centerpieces of a busy history center at Seawolf Park.

The book features lots of photographs, documentation, and historical detail.

December 15th (2-4pm): “Murder and Madness: A Mavis Davis Mystery, No. 3” Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with Susan P. Baker and her newest mystery novel set in Galveston.

When private investigator Mavis Davis takes on the case of a murdered cruise ship captain killed brutally with an ax, she wades right into the middle of an open investigation, navigating Galveston Island from one end to the other, searching for the answers to five-year-old questions. Faced with a terminally ill client, Mavis must find the perpetrator fast or her client will go to her grave heartbroken that her brother’s killing remains a mystery.

Susan P. Baker, a retired Texas judge, is the award-winning author of two nonfiction books and eight novels including “Ledbetter Street” (2015) and “Unaware” (2017), all related to the law. As a judge, she dealt with a wide range of cases from murder to divorce, involving both adults and children. Prior to this, she practiced law for nine years and, while in law school, worked as a probation officer. Her experience in the justice system is apparent in her writings.

Currently, she has three novels in progress. Susan lives in Galveston.

December 22nd (1-3pm): “Galveston’s Red Light District: A History of The Line” Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing with Kimber Fountain who returns with her history of Galveston’s legendary red light district.

Known today as a colorful resort destination featuring family entertainment and a thriving arts district, Galveston was once notorious for its flourishing vice economy and infamous redlight district. Called simply “The Line,” the unassuming five blocks of Postoffice Street came alive every night with wild parties and generous offerings of hourly love.

A stubborn mainstay of the island cityscape for nearly seventy years, it finally shut down in the late 1950s. But ridding Galveston of prostitution would prove much more difficult than putting a padlock on the front door. Kimber Fountain pursues the sequestered story of women who wanted to make their own rules and the city that wanted to let them.

Kimber Fountain is the editor-in-chief and feature writer for “Galveston Monthly” magazine and serves as chairperson of the Arts and Historic Preservation Advisory Board to the Galveston City Council.

She is also the author of “Galveston Seawall Chronicles,” a history of Galveston’s Seawall, its construction, and subsequent impact on the city’s tourist trade and economy. She can also be found on stage at the Island ETC Company. Ms. Fountain resides in Galveston.

Galveston Art League Spotlights UTMB Staffers’ Creativity

Exhibitions This Month at Galveston Arts Center: Kaneem Smith Opens “Captive Sojourn & the Indefinite” with Renata Lucia & Lina Dib Through January 13th In the main gallery, Kaneem Smith will feature “Captive Sojourn and the Indefinite” on exhibit. Kaneem Smith’s exhibition explores the tumultuous relationship between trade, consumption, and commodities. Referencing Galveston’s location on a natural port in the Gulf of Mexico, and its historical and contemporary ties to the exchange of goods and labor, her installation contemplates the trade of natural materials, specifically cotton and coffee through textiles, such as burlap used for import/export purposes. As a mixed media artist and sculptor with a background in fibers, these concepts run a complex thread throughout her body of work.

In the 1878 Gallery, Renata Lucia will feature “News vs. Nature (Gulf).” Renata Lucia’s paintings reflect on the widening social divides that unfold in the current news cycle. Her works incorporate national and local newspapers, including works created specifically for this exhibition that use pages from “The Galveston Daily News.” Acrylic paint and drawing media are applied to crumpled newspaper pages that are selected for composition and content, resulting in a textured topographical illusion. The intimacy of reading a physical newspaper is contrasted with a detached aerial view.

Lucia began the “News vs. Nature” series considering the organized chaos of nature reigning supreme against the psychological toll of bad news. The series shifted and took on new importance in late 2017 as an epic battle began to rage in our perception and discussion of the news. Lucia’s works consider the questions “Is the news fake or, more likely, a last bastion of truth? Is nature sublime, or does it represent the most disturbing aspects of human nature?”

In the Brown Foundation Gallery, Lina Dib will show “Threshold,” an interactive video installation that incorporates video of waves breaking on the Galveston shore just before sunset. The shore’s infinite poetic qualities, constant ebb and flow, and collision of bodies (land and sea) feature largely in Dib’s work. “Threshold” is a kind of homage to Thierry Kuntzel’s “The Waves” and to Andy Warhol’s “Sunset.” It is a tribute and meditation on the specificities of place and our relationship to natural systems.

Art Club for Kids (Tuesdays, 4:15-5:45pm) - Perfect for homeschoolers or after school, this mixed age art club centers on the student-directed exploration of drawing, painting, sculpture, and more. If you love the holidays, this is a fun gift idea that spreads the love across multiple formats. Self-taught artisan Bekah Guedry of My Creative Buzz will lead this workshop just in time for the holidays, dishing out the tricks and tools of the trade. Work from live demos, worksheets with sample letters and words, and try a variety of brush pens, felt-tip markers, and papers. Once you get comfortable with those, you’ll have time to make a holiday-themed quote on card stock, which you can decorate, copy, and/or cut to shape to place on gift tags, greeting cards, dinner party place cards, treat bag decorations, or anything else you dream up! Hand-Cut Silhouettes at Galveston Art Center During Dickens on the Strand

Patti Rishforth of Heart Paper Scissors will be making hand-cut silhouettes in the lobby of Galveston Arts Center from 10am-5pm on Saturday, December 1st during Dickens on the Strand, capturing you or your loved ones’ portrait in profile with just a few snips of her shears.

This economical yet elegant art form was popularized in the 1800’s when photography was not yet common and paintings were costly.

Today, framed silhouettes retain a classic, even modern appeal and are often passed down from one generation to the next!

The Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston, will host a unique exhibit from November 29th-December 30th with artwork created

by University of Texas Medical Branch personnel. These five staff members are displaying and offering works for sale from 12 noon-6pm Thursdays-Sundays: • Mary Feldhusen, editor of the UTMB Health System Friday Focus newsletter, who primarily works in acrylic on canvas.

• Christian Mikobi, a business coordinator for the division of geriatric medicine. She works in acrylics on canvas.

• Rae Kretzmer, MS, RDN, is a nutritionist at the UTMB Sealy Center on Aging. Rae creates acrylic works on canvas and does photography.

• Christopher Fry, PhD, an assistant professor and researcher for the Department of Nutrition and Metabolism. He has taken fluorescent pictures of muscle cells for more than seven years.

• Jean Gutierrez, PhD, RD, LD, an associate professor in the Department of Nutrition and Metabolism and program director for the MS and dietetic internship program. Jean primarily works in oil and jewelry-making.

In addition to their individual artworks being shown, Christopher and Jean also will collaborate on a 36-by-27-inch team piece entitled “Fluorescent Labeling of Skeletal Muscle Stem Cells.”

The mission of the Galveston Art League, a 104-year-old nonprofit organization, is to promote visual arts. The Art League promotes local artists and offers many educational opportunities to the community at large. It operates galleries on Postoffice in Galveston and at 611 6th St. N. in Texas City.

December 8th (2-4:30pm): Advent Art: Wabi-Sabi + Pottery - Wabi-Sabi is a Japanese philosophy that honors the imperfect, the humble, the hand-made. Wabi-Sabi seeks to embrace the beauty found in the changing of seasons, things, nature plus our own lives. It is a philosophy that challenges us to lean into vulnerability, not be afraid to face the fractured places in our lives plus do the work necessary to participate in our own healing. In this workshop, Lanecia Rouse Tinsley of LAR Art Studio will guide you in a time of creative introspection plus art making. Each participant will create plus re-create art on clay, as you lean into an art process rooted in the philosophy of wabi-sabi. By the end of the experience, you will have a finished piece of art to take home. This is a brave space for all skill levels. Space is limited to 40 participants. This will be held at Galveston Central Church, 3308 Ave. O 1/2.

December 14th (6-9pm): Surfing as an Art Show - Join for the 7th annual Surfing As An Art show at Southern Spears Surf Shop, 6026 Seawall Blvd., Galveston. This is a fun family event showcasing talented local surf artists and photographers and is a perfect opportunity to pick up unique gifts for the holidays. The Heard Gallery: A History of Art in Downtown Galveston

Vincent Van Gogh/Ray Heard. How could those two names be linked in any way? What could they possibly have in common? Huge differences, yes? Then let’s examine them.

Van Gogh’s paintings sell for tens of millions of dollars and hang in national galleries. Ray Heard’s do not.

Van Gogh is world famous. Ray Heard is not.

But, there is also one other difference, Van Gogh sold only one painting in his life. Ray Heard has sold many hundreds.

And surprisingly, there are many similarities.

Van Gogh’s paintings are created using multiple layers – so are Ray Heard’s.

Van Gogh’s strokes are boldly laid down in heavy paint – so are Ray Heard’s.

Van Gogh’s paintings exude light and brightness – so do Ray Heard’s.

Van Gogh had a singular passion for painting – so does Ray Heard.

Van Gogh labored near poverty most of his life – which unfortunately is also true for Ray Heard.

Ray Heard opened his first gallery in Galveston on Postoffice in August 2010. At that time, the street was lined with empty buildings. This encouraged his landlord to pay for all electricity and allowed Ray to pay only half rent for the first six months. The only request he made to compensate for his generosity was 30% of any profit, if and when the gallery became profitable.

But Ray looked at it differently, having been an entrepreneur all his life, he saw the potential of tremendous free advertising created by the ArtWalk.

And he was right! He was able to pay full rent and electricity in his second month, and keep his profit. Fortunately his overhead was very low, and the only thing he had to do to the space when he moved in was paint the floor.

Increasingly over the years, as buildings were filled on Postoffice, and rents were raised each year to reflect the growing popularity of the area, overhead costs soared as sales for all galleries diminished in spite of the popularity of ArtWalk. In order to save money, Ray moved out of his apartment and lived in the rear of his gallery for the last two years his gallery was there.

Then, just as it seemed that he would no longer have a gallery, two weeks before his lease was to be terminated, the building Heard Gallery now occupies at 411 25th (Rosenberg) Street, became available at a much lower rent.

When Ray was young, his father, who was a furniture salesman, moved his wife and six children to Norman, Oklahoma. Straight out of high school, Ray started his first business and by the time he was 23 years old, he and his brother had a successful business cleaning windows for fifteen hotels in Oklahoma City. Then the S&L loan debacle hit, and he, like many others, lost everything.

He sold whatever was left, and moved out to California to live with a friend in Los Angeles He had three difficult years doing odd jobs until he moved to Laguna Beach and began window and chimney cleaning with his brother who came out to join him.

It was during this time that the interest he had always had in art, drawing and doodling since he was five, opened his perspective, because of all the galleries situated in Laguna Beach. He began going to the galleries and concluded after viewing an 8” x 10” piece of art hanging in a gallery, “I can paint that badly right now with no lessons at all!”

Encouraged by a gallery owner, he studied art at the Mission Viejo Campus for one semester, and then studied for one year at Van Nuys, after opening a chimney business in Santa Barbara. Trying to run a business while studying art was very difficult, but his reward was the sale of his first painting at age 32 in a Laguna Beach gallery.

The other great difficulty he had was that he had no place to work. He would have to clean up everything he was working on, breaking his continuity and concentration, when he left the space he was using. As a student, he was again living hand to mouth and when his father died in Oklahoma, he went back and stayed. It was much cheaper to live in Oklahoma that in California. By being able to live in his Grandfather’s house where his father had lived, he now had a place to work. He read everything he could and compared styles until gradually over 10 years he developed his own. He worked hard to be accepted into showing his art

at local and state art shows. At the same time he taught himself how to do custom framing and to become proficient in utilizing Photoshop.

While in Oklahoma, he had visited Galveston a number of times and had observed ArtWalk, very much liking the concept. Finally, with success at selling his paintings at various shows, he wanted to open a gallery and decided that Galveston, with the ArtWalk, was the place. After coming to a quick deal for a space on Postoffice, he opened Heard Gallery.

The first years were very good. He advertised in local magazines and generated many sales. Ninety-five percent of his clientele were locals who regularly took to the streets during ArtWalk, imbibing in wine, perusing the galleries and making purchases of original art and prints they liked.

But unfortunately, good times can end. Sales plummeted at the same time as rents increased for many of the galleries on Postoffice. This had a serious financial impact on the Heard Gallery and Ray. Now at his new gallery on 25th Street, Ray has his studio in the Heard Gallery. He purposely did this so that he can devote much more time to painting and a lot less time to running a business. Having dramatically cut his overhead, he can afford to buy all the needed supplies to paint as he wants. His finances have not improved, but he is looking expectantly to the future. He believes that under these circumstances, he will paint the best he has ever painted. And that will be very, very good!

Like Van Gogh and many other historical and contemporary artists, hovering near the poverty line for much of one’s life, is far less important than feeding a passion – a passion for painting! And that describes Ray Heard.

Heard Gallery hours will reflect this new direction, opening to the public only on Saturday 11am-5pm and Sunday 2-5pm.

Regular clients can call him at the Gallery during the week. He will be in his studio – working hard!

“Galveston Photography 1860-1890” on Exhibit, Photographs Taken By Sache & Potter Studio In 1861 Rosenberg Library continues the exhibit: “Galveston Photography, 1860-1890.”

The exhibit includes the earliest known photographs of Downtown Galveston which were taken by Sache & Potter Studio in 1861 just before the Civil War. Other images include the aftermath of a devastating hurricane that struck the island in October 1867 as well as damage from a Downtown fire in 1877. One of the most striking images in the exhibit is a photograph of three men in a canoe resting above a frozen Galveston Bay after a winter storm in 1886.

Other interesting images are stereographs created by Galveston photographer P.H. Rose in the mid-1880s. Stereographs are double images from slightly different perspectives which appear as a single, three-dimensional image when viewed with a stereoscope. Special viewing lenses will be available in the exhibit gallery so that these photos can be seen as originally intended by the photographer.

“Galveston Photography 1860-1890” is on display through December 31st.

Two Tons of Steel December 28th Before there was Americana, before there was Texas Country, Two Tons of Steel front man Kevin Geil and his original band, “Dead Crickets,” rocked a sound that blended the best of musical worlds and pushed the envelope of “Texas” sound with a signature brand of country meets punk.

The San Antonio-based group packed small bars and local hangouts and quickly became the Alamo City’s most-loved band, earning them a spot on the cover of Billboard Magazine in 1996.

It was the beginning of a twenty-year journey

Releasing “Two Tons Of Steel” in 1994 and “Crazy For My Baby” in 1995 on Blue Fire Records, a sponsorship deal with Lone Star Beer quickly followed.

Dead Crickets, renamed Two Tons of Steel in 1996, began traveling outside of Texas, including stops at the Grand Ole’ Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, the National Theater in Havana, Cuba, and European tours, to greet fans who had embraced their Texas-born sound.

In 1996, they released “Oh No!” on their independent label “Big Bellied Records.” They followed up the passion project with a live recording at the legendary Gruene Hall in Gruene, Texas, taped during a Two Ton Tuesday Show 1998.

2018 marked the bands 23rd year of “Two Ton Tuesday Live from Gruene Hall.” The summerlong event has drawn over 230,000 fans since it began its annual run in 1995. The popular concert series was captured in “Two Ton Tuesday Live,” a DVD-CD combo released on Palo Duro Records in 2006.

Also that year, the band’s first national release, “Vegas,” produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Lloyd Maines on the Palo Duro label, took them to No. 7 on the Americana Music Charts and was one of the top 20 releases of 2006.

Two Tons released “Not That Lucky” in 2009.

The album peaked at No. 4 on the Americana Music Charts and has made Two Tons of Steel a band to watch in 2013.

Along the way, the band has collected a number of awards. To date, Two Tons has cleaned up at home, winning “Band of the Year” on 12 separate occasions and “Album of the Year” for its self-titled debut.

Two Tons has also been named “Best Country Band” by the San Antonio Current ten times.

Geil also has nabbed ‘Best Male Vocal’ honors four times.

Two Tons of Steel’s reach extends beyond their live gigs. In 2003, the band was filmed during a “Two Ton Tuesday” gig for the IMAX film, “Texas: The Big Picture,” which can be seen daily at the IMAX Theatre in the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin and has been seen as far away as Japan. The band also has been featured as supporting characters in award-winning author Karen Kendall’s romance novel, “First Date.”

About the Conductor Trond Saeverud is a conductor, violinist, Music Director and Conductor of Galveston Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted professional and community orchestras in Denmark, Norway, and the US — most recently in Maine, where he is the founder and artistic director of the Passamaquoddy Bay Symphony Orchestra. In 2008-2010, Trond conducted the Bangor Symphony Orchestra in several subscriptions and Pops concerts, including a very successful stage production of West Side Story.
