To Do “Something’s Afoot” on Stage at Island ETC The final weeks for “Something’s Afoot” from Island ETC are upon us.

The Island ETC production of “Something’s Afoot” continues through April 13th. Every performance of this hysterical musical with book, music, and lyrics by James McDonald, David Vos, and Robert Gerlach and additional music by Ed Linderman is bound to please audience members of all ages.

(Disclaimer – “Something’s Afoot” contains no language, nudity, or intense sexual situations.)

“Something’s Afoot” is a fun-filled musical spoof of British murder mystery novels, particularly “And Then There Were None” by Agatha Christie. It’s a classic tale, set on an English country estate in the mid-1930’s. Ten seemingly unrelated strangers gather in an isolated mansion that soon becomes unreachable. Before long they are killed one by one in mysterious and hilarious ways, and it is up to those left to find the culprit!

Traditional mystery murder characters comprise these musically talented sleuths. There are the household servants: Flint (Philip Graschel), the handyman who can’t keep his hands to himself; the greedy housemaid Lettie (Abby Gough); and Clive (Michael Wonio) the butler and therefore the usual suspect. The guests include the host’s nephew, the gold-digging Nigel (Matt Poole); the mysterious femme fatale, Lady Grace Manly-Prowe (Kerri Foley); the military man Colonel Gillweather (Bobby Hewitt); and the feminist and sage Doctor Grayburn (Terri Burchfield). And of course, there is a budding romance between the sweet and innocent Hope (Hayley Dougherty) and the uninvited stranger Geoffrey (Ali Masswi). Offering her ‘considerable’ powers of deduction is Miss Tweed (Stephanie Rascoe Myers), an artist and Agatha Christie aficionado.

“This show is total fun,” says director Kim Mytelka, “it’s silly and clever, musically delightful, with character types you know and love!” Along with an extremely talented cast, “Something’s Afoot” is brought to life by Kim’s dream team: Jennifer Daugherty (Choreographer), Trish Fowzer (Music Director), Allison O’Rourke (Stage Manager), Thomas D. Boone (Set Design), Nancy Dougherty (Costume Design), Lisa Miller (Light Design), and Kevin Daugherty (Construction).

Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening at 8pm. A Sunday matinee will be performed on April 13th at 2:30pm. Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for students and senior citizens (55+). Tickets are available at islandetc.org.

At Galveston Children’s Museum:

Unlock the Power of Play The Galveston Children’s Museum is an Island resource that attracts families and serves the community with fun for children in all areas of education, and offers self-directed activities promoting science, literacy, math, and the arts. It showcases dynamic exhibits targeting a primary focus group of children ages 2-10 and conducts special programming for children of all ages.

Exhibits are “Our Town,” “Kid’s Clinic,” “Building Zone,” “A Stroke of Genius,” “Tinker Workshop,” “Explore & Discover,” “Now Starring You,” and “A Room to Grow.”

Fairytale Ball: “Once Upon a Time...Under the Sea” 2019

“Once upon a time…Under the Sea” is a mysterious and enchanting place, and it is also the theme of the Galveston Children’s Museum 2019 Fairytale Ball!

On Saturday, April 13th, the 2019 Fairytale Ball will bring the Sea King, his Little Mermaid, and her Prince to life for an evening of festivities that includes special activities for both adult and child.

From 5-9:30pm, the grounds of the beautiful Moody Mansion will come alive with the sights and sounds of the sea. The mermaid sisters will keep a watchful eye on the children while parents retreat to the castle to enjoy a grown-up party with delicious food and drink.

Back again is the exclusive ‘Tween Ball full of surprises for ages 10 and up. Space is limited for the ‘Tween Ball, so sponsor today to ensure a spot.

Rounding out the evening will be the traditional family dance where parents and kids reunite to dance away the remainder of the evening.

At Bryan Museum This Month April 6th (7:30-9:30pm): “Big Texas Fix” Premiere - Join Ashley and Michael Cordray in the Museum’s Grand Library for an exclusive live premiere of the first episode of their new TV show, “Big Texas Fix.” Chat with the Cordrays and enjoy refreshments and hors d’oeuvres. Tickets are $15 for members, $25 for non-members.

Summer Camps Open Registration

Camps scheduled are: June 10th-14th, July 15th-19th: Science Explorers Summer Camp - Get your Einstein on with an extraordinary variety of science topics.

FYI, this involves experiencing science ... sinking, erupting, wiggling, attracting, repelling, magnifying, floating, crawling, fading, blocking, shining and changing … all these things and a great many more will be happening this week.

June 24th-28th and August 5th-9th: Maker Mania Sumer Camp - Tinkering to create will be the theme. From circuits to automata, campers will design and create a variety of way fun stuff. Tasks will be varied, as will the materials used, so the only thing extra that’s needed is your camper’s imagination to bring it to life. This camp is recommended for ages 7 and up.

June 24th-28th and August 5th-9th (ages 4-8) - The Art and Science of Storybooks - Using some classic storybooks, campers will explore the science and art within. Be it the science of color, animals, or paper, they will investigate. Regarding the art, children will learn about the illustrators and explore their work on their own terms.

July 22nd-26th: Sewing Summer Camp Girls and Boys alike will enjoy this camp for all levels of experience with sewing. Campers will have flexibility in their projects as they choose from skirts or pillows, bags or stuffies - there will have plenty of options to choose from. Campers will experience machine sewing as well as hand sewing to create their very own items. This camp is recommended for kids 8 and up.

Camps are $250 for a full week or $50 per day. two egg hunts in the beautiful spring garden.

Tulip the Market Bunny will be available for photos. Face painting by local artist Mel Black will be available too, and live music by Nicole Quinn. The 9:30am hunt is for ages 1-4. The 10am hunt is for ages five and up.

The 24th Annual Grand Kids Festival, celebrating children, families and folk art, is scheduled for Saturday, April 6th, 10am-5pm. Presented by The Grand 1894 Opera House, this one-of-a-kind, free family event will take place in Galveston’s historic downtown Cultural Arts District on Postoffice Street between 20th and 23rd streets.

As an event designed to engage families in the arts, the Festival includes a multitude of activities for the young and the young at heart. What you can expect at the festival: three outdoor stages, an indoor stage (inside the historic Grand 1894 Opera House, 2020 Postoffice Street), a storytelling tent, a petting zoo, inflatables, a variety of food and beverage booths, and over 40 activity booths – all filling the Festival area!

New to the Festival this year is Grammy-winning blues artist, Mr. Blue Shoes - Michael Dyson.

His highly engaging, multi-sensory live music experience combines blues music, oral history, and life lessons, designed to inspire all ages about music and learning. This year you can find a wire sculptor providing a first-hand experience, enabling Festival goers to create his or her own wire masterpiece. The Festival is also excited to showcase the Crescent Circus acrobatics team from New Orleans and Circus Chickendog from Austin, Texas, two groups you will not want to miss.

This year's Festival will feature two performances of Missoula Children’s Theatre’s production of “Snow Queen,” on stage at The Grand, as well as family-friendly performances by student choirs, dance groups, bands, musicians and professional family entertainment - including singer/ author Tom’s Fun Band, storytellers Sue Kuentz and “Singing Zoologist” Lucas Miller, puppeteer Dru Woods, and Margaret Clauder as Sailor Maggie.

Galveston’s Grand Kids Festival is recognized as the “largest free art-focused children’s event held on the Gulf Coast.” Come enjoy the fun!

23rd Annual YCF Wild Game BBQ Cook-Off May 10th-11th

May 10th-11th, come to Pier 21, at 21st and Harborside Drive in Galveston, for a “Wild Time” at the 23rd Annual Yaga’s Wild Game BBQ Cook-off! Proceeds benefit The Yaga’s Children’s Fund, a nonprofit organization that advances the psychological, intellectual, vocational, and physical development of Galveston County’s Children.

Everyone is invited to participate, whether with a cooking team or spectator.

The competition is an excellent way for backyard chefs, sportsmen and women, and outdoor enthusiasts to show off their culinary skills and enjoy some good old-fashioned fun, fellowship, and food. There will be loads of food, vendors, music, a kid’s play area, silent auction, and a 5K. Run wild with the Yaga’s Children’s Fund Inc. on Saturday, May 11th along the Galveston Seawall. This family-friendly walk/run is a non-competitive event for “Wild Things” of all ages before they head down to Pier 21 for some delicious wild game and free-flowing beverages. Your entry fee includes t-shirt, souvenir event koozie, and a dinner ticket for the 23rd Annual World Wild Game and BBQ Cook-off. Not only is this a great deal, by participating you will help support the moral, psychological, intellectual, vocational and physical development of Galveston County’s Children! The run starts in front of Beerfoot Brewing, 2816 Ave. R 1/2, Galveston.

At the festival, the cost is $10 per plate to dine on the main attraction - the annual wild game cook-off - and the food is beyond delicious, with something for every palate. The friendly competition of this competitive cooking event invites backyard chefs to show off their culinary skills.

There will be a free fun Kid’s area Saturday, May 11th, 12 noon-5pm sponsored by UTMB Health Pediatrics. Saturday’s event also features live entertainment, free arts and crafts, moonwalks, and a petting zoo; plus vendors selling everything from island and fishing apparel to Hawaiian shaved ice, children’s toys, specialty cigars and more. There will also be a silent auction, face painting, Galveston Ballet dancers, Ball High Tornettes, and Ryan’s RazMaTazz Galveston Dolphin!

Free Family Fun at Saengerfest Park:

“My Fair Lady” and Dem Roots on Stage Downtown With beautiful weather and longer days, families are spending more and more time outdoors. Saengerfest Park, located in the heart of Downtown Galveston, is a great place to find free family-friendly fun.

Saengerfest Park is a small, square park located on the corner of 23rd St. and The Strand in Galveston’s Historic Strand District. Saengerfest Park is known for having a large, playable chess set, a large compass that can be used as a seat, a colorful iconic Galveston wall mural, a huge beach chair offering photo opportunities, wooden benches, an old-fashioned London-style phone booth, and a stage used for festivals, movies, and concerts.

Visitors and residents are invited to enjoy free movies the first Saturday of each month beginning just after dusk. Moviegoers are encouraged to set up a blanket or chair. Galveston Trolley’s Spring Hours

Getting around on the island is easier than ever these days, and what better way to do so than to ride one of Galveston Rubber Wheel Trolleys!

Until Memorial Day, the hours of operation for the Galveston Rubber Wheel Trolleys (“Galveston Trolleys”) are 11am-7pm Monday-Thursday, and 10am-10pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Summer hours (after Memorial Day) are 10am-10pm daily.

The fee to ride is $1 for adults, and minors who are accompanied by adults can ride for free. Riders will need to bring exact change to place in the fare box; drivers do not have the ability to make change.

The trolleys pass each stop on the trolley route every 30 minutes.

You can jump on or jump off anywhere along the routes. Stops will take you from Stewart Beach along the Seawall to Moody Gardens as well as down 25th Street to numerous stops throughout Downtown.

Volunteers will be on site to assist youth in assembling their stand.

Galveston Historical Foundation Announces 45th Annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour

two connected gable-front three-story buildings. A courtyard separates the main buildings from two detached two-story servant’s quarters on the south part of the property.

Galveston Historical Foundation opens the doors to Galveston’s incredible architectural history through public tours of privately-owned homes during its annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour.

Tours will be held on May 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th from 10am- 6pm. Tickets are available online at galvestonhistory.org for non-members at $30 until May 1st, and then for $35 until May 12th. Members of Galveston Historical Foundation can purchase specially priced $25 tickets by calling (409)7653405 or by visiting any of GHF’s retail locations.

Peter Nielson, a Danish-born merchant tailor, built this two-story brick house with details inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement for use as his private residence. A year after construction, Nielson died suddenly. His widow, Augusta, maintained the residence until 1929, when she moved to Houston to live with family.

2019 Homes on Tour August Roemer Tenant House, built 1873: 1416 Sealy

August Roemer built this one-and-one-halfstory Gulf Coast cottage with triple dormers in 1873 for use as rental property. The center-hall house features a notable entry with double doors and transom, turned balusters, and square porch columns. Roemer sold the house in 1879 to Julius and Elizabeth Ruhl, who used it as tenant property and a residence for extended family.

James and Amelia Byrnes House, built c.1881: Rehabilitation in Progress House: 2113 Ball Street

In 1883, paving and roofing contractor James Byrnes purchased this lot with an existing building.

Byrnes “improved” the house in 1884, 1885, 1886 and 1895. Located adjacent to Galveston’s business district, the Byrnes House was used as an example of urban decay in 1969 during a city referendum on urban renewal. The current owners purchased the house in 2013 and began rehabilitation of the property.

Conrad and Henrike House, built 1887: 1807 Avenue L

Conrad Lenz built this center-hall, side-gable house with double dormers for use as his family residence. He and his wife, Henrike Pruessner, both emigrated from Germany to Galveston where they were married at First Lutheran Church. Lenz, a butcher, operated a shop and smokehouse next door, on the corner of 18th Street.

Allen and Lulu Cameron House, built 1891: 1126 Church Street

English born architect Henry Collier Cooke of the firm Bourgeois Nitchner & Cooke designed this two-story Victorian house for merchant Allen Cameron and his new bride, Lulu Aschoff. The house boasts an asymmetrical façade with double wraparound galleries separated by a patterned shingle skirt, a decorative balustrade, and a widow’s walk.

Lucas Terrace, built 1901-1908: 1407 Broadway

Brick mason and English immigrant Thomas Lucas erected this complex using salvaged bricks from his apartment building at 6th and Broadway destroyed by the 1900 Storm. Constructed between 1901 and 1908, Lucas Terrace features

Iacopo Niccolai Tenant House, built 1922: 2416 38th Street

Italian immigrant carpenter, Iacopo Niccolai, relocated this fiveroom bungalow, along with eleven others, in March 1938. Originally on 15th Street, Niccolai concentrated the twelve properties within the 2400 block of 38th Street, which he called “Niccolai Subdivision.” Niccolai utilized the block as rental property until his death in 1947.

Peter and Anna Serini House, built 1903, rebuilt 1923: 1810 Avenue N ½

Alexander McLellan, a Canadian immigrant and a foreman for Southwestern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Company, moved to Galveston after the 1900 Storm. In 1902, he purchased this vacant lot, and in 1903 relocated an “old” house there. In 1913, Peter and Anna Serini purchased the property. The Serinis rebuilt the house in 1923, using “part old material,” according to the property’s original 1903 insurance record.

This year’s Galveston Historic Homes Tour will partner with Outdoor Painters Society’s Plein Air Southwest for their annual member’s competition, show, and sale featuring 44-juried artists. These artists will record history across the island in the form of paintings created during the tour. A public sale of the art will be open on Saturday, May 11th from 9am-6pm,. and Sunday, May 12th from 9am3pm at the 1859 Ashton Villa, 2328 Broadway.

A Local Love of All Things Good

As most people are aware, Americans eat very different today from the way they ate just a generation ago. Consumer preference and advertising are now directed towards healthy eating. Mom and Pop stores, as well as large corporate food outlets and distributors, are finding that the products they sell have to address this new phenomenon, or they could go out of business.

Of course, more than food alone goes into a healthy lifestyle. More people are exercising and discussing online their increasing concern with everything they put into their bodies, and do to their bodies. And the brain has specific health needs, as well as the rest of the body.

A deep concern of many consumers is the chemicals used in creating, preserving, and growing food. This is starting to be addressed by large corporations, but they can only go so far.

McDonald’s, for example, has changed many items in its menu to reflect the emphasis on this new way of living, but McDonald’s is still a fast food outlet!

Many in the new generation – this goes for the older generation as well - are demanding fresh and locally-grown food when they eat at home, when they go out to eat, and when they shop.

Luckily for us here in Galveston, we have Galveston’s Own Farmers Market providing us with quality locally grown and prepared food.

The Market is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization formed in 2012. It has now found a home in the parking area, appropriately surrounded by greenery, behind The Bryan Museum, located at 1315 21st Street. Every Thursday 3-6pm, and Sunday 9am-1pm, vendors display their wares.

A local guitarist creates a pleasant atmosphere for those wandering through the market.

Galveston’s Own Farmers Market’s mission is to provide local fresh food and products to the community. The hope is to increase public awareness of the excellent local products available, and at the same time strengthening the local economy by providing vendors with a convenient and inexpensive venue for displaying and selling their goods.

Casey McAuliffe, the Executive Director of Galveston’s Own Farmers Market, occupies the only paid position at the present time. The other directors are volunteers. Although the Market is in the process of hiring a Market Manager, often a volunteer Director, such as Dustin Henry, will act as marketing manager until a new manager can be hired and trained. Dustin holds a regular job in the City Planning Office, but he nevertheless took on the job of being greeter at the entrance, and has had to contact the vendors for the day’s market, provide them with the location of their tent, help with tent set-up if necessary, and inform the public through email and newsletter who the vendors for the day would be. These will be the duties of the new Marketing Manager.

In addition to the guitarist and the vendors, there are also Community Partners for each of the market events, e.g. the Humane Society or the Ministry of the 7th Day Adventists, who have their own tent, and provide a location where people can sample different products being sold by that day’s vendors.

Two of the many vendors at the market demonstrate the diversity of the locally grown product offered.

The people behind Moon Dog Farms cultivate 11 acres on their farm in Santa Fe. Moon Dog is owned by Casey McAuliffe and Alex McPhail.

They began their farm in January 2013 after graduating from Southwestern University. To learn about hands-on farming, they farmed their way from New York to North Carolina before returning to Texas. Helping with the farm work and representing them at the Farmers Market were Ashley and Danny Richardson. They got into the lifestyle because it is different and healthy and offers them an opportunity to work on their own. 9th Annual Rotary Crawfish Boil Set For Sunday, April 14th At Moody Gardens over constantly, requiring a lot of full time attention. Local farming proceeds from a love of natural farming as opposed to productive farming, so to supplement their lifestyle, Casey works as the Director of the Galveston’s Own Farmers Market and Alex is an independent filmmaker in Austin.

Alex and Casey, through Moon Dog Farms, want to sell the produce, vegetables, fruit, and flowers they grow to provide quality fresh food for those who do not have extra expendable income.

Galveston’s Own Farmers Market also provides them with an opportunity to participate in a market that is a community hub. About 90% of their customers are locals, while the other 10% are made up of cruise passengers and visitors to the Bryan Museum.

My Spicy Hot Wife Pepper and Jams is easy to spot amongst the vendor’s tents. Owner Timothy Glover wears a bright red hot pepper hat, while his wife and partner Natalie prepares samples for potential customers to try. Their business started because Tim loves hot food. He also loves quality hot food, so for many years, he has been growing his own peppers in the backyard of their League City home. However, at the end of each growing season, he had so many peppers left over that they were just being thrown away. It was Natalie who decided that this was a waste. She began experimenting with producing a pepper jelly using only fresh ingredients that were full of flavor. After many unsuccessful attempts, she finally nailed it!

At their vendor tent, they had on display, ten different samples of jelly on crackers with cream cheese. They were set out with the hottest at one end and the mildest at the other. The hottest is made with the Carolina Reaper Pepper. which is hotter than Habanero and hotter than Jalapeno!

On display for customers to taste were: Carolina Reaper, Pineapple Habanero, Blackberry Habanero, Strawberry Jalapeno, Slamming Jalapeno, Peach Pepper, Sweetness from Hell, Spicy Apple Pie, Anytime Margarita, and Strawberry jam.

Tim recommends starting at the mild end with strawberry jam because you will not taste anything after trying the Carolina Reaper!

Judging from the pedestrian traffic flow into and out of the market, Galvestonians realize that Galveston Own Farmers Market is a wonderfully unique venue.

For the past 106 years, the Rotary Club of Galveston has subscribed to the motto “Service Above Self.”

And again this year, to raise monies that will directly benefit the Galveston community’s many vital humanitarian and educational projects and programs, the Club will host its 9th Annual Rotary Club of Galveston Crawfish Boil on Sunday, April 14th.

Presented by the Dr. Leon Bromberg Charitable Trust Fund, this fun, family event will take place at Moody Gardens 12 noon-4pm, under the Big White Tent behind the Discovery Pyramid. You can look forward to a delightful afternoon of good food, live Zydeco music, and the fellowship of family and friends.

The Lighthouse Charity Cooking Team will be back - under the direction of Scott Gordon and his talented crew - preparing a superb plate of Cajunspicy crawfish, potatoes, onions, and fresh corn on the cob. Also again this year, attendees can opt for specially-seasoned hot, boiled shrimp if preferred.

Other popular options to round out the menu include Lighthouse Dogs and barbeque beefstuffed potato.

Another crowd favorite at this fun family event is the Zydeco Dance Contest, and the competition will culminate with the crowning of the festival’s Zydeco Dance King or Dance Queen. In addition to being “crowned,” valuable prizes will be awarded to the winning King or Queen, as well as to winners in each category.

Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for returning author Barbara Ortwein with her book, “In the Heart of Texas But Not Yet at Home,” the second book in her series of historical novels covering the immigration of the Germans to Texas.

In search of political and personal freedom, self-determination, and their own land, thousands of Germans started to settle in the wilderness of Southwest Texas in the mid-1800’s. Among these settlers are the Hessians Karl Engelbach and his son Johann, forced to flee Germany in 1844.

Though the work is difficult, the Germans do well at first. Aided by an unlikely alliance with the Comanches, they manage to tame parts of the Texas Hill Country. Their cities of Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, Boerne and Comfort become centers of civilization and culture in the former wilderness. After the secession of Texas and the onset of the Civil War, they were in danger of losing all they had worked for. Most of the settlers were Union supporters, a position which would initiate serious difficulties for their community.

A thrilling continuation of her first novel, “Between Worlds, Never to Return,” this second installment continues the story of the Engelbachs and the integration of the Germans into Texas, and the great conflict that arose for them during the American Civil War. Red Light District Tour with Kimber Fountain, Author of “Galveston’s Red Light District: A History of The Line”

From the author of the book comes a wonderful tour and a riveting journey through the forgotten parts of Downtown Galveston that were once bustling with wild parties and generous offerings of hourly love. Join renowned author and speaker Kimber Fountain as she brings to life the tales - both tragic and triumphant - of Galveston’s historic Red Light District. Known today as a colorful resort destination featuring family-friendly entertainment and a thriving arts district, Galveston was once notorious for its flourishing vice economy of illegal liquor and gambling and an infamous red light district called simply, “The Line.” This unassuming five blocks of Postoffice Street came to life every night and remained a stubborn mainstay of the island cityscape for nearly seventy years. In the late 1950s, the era was known as the “Free State of Galveston” finally came to an end, and today, almost all that remains of its history has been sensationalized and marginalized. Galveston was more than just a city of “gangsters” and lewd women, and Kimber Fountain pursues the authentic, sequestered story of women who wanted to make their own rules and the city that wanted to let them.

12th Annual Galveston Women’s Conference featuring Former First Lady Laura Bush The Galveston Women’s Conference is a daylong educational event to celebrate women, inspire women, and motivate women to strive for the best in both their personal and professional lives.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Laura Bush. Mrs. Bush served as First Lady from 2001 to 2009 during the presidency of her husband, President George W. Bush.

She is an advocate for literacy, education and women’s rights.

Other speakers include Jessica Herrin, Author, CEO and Founder of Stella & Dot. Herrin is a serial entrepreneur who previously co-founded WeddingChannel.com, the world’s leading wedding site.

April 6th: Wicked Wine Run - Race through the beautiful and scenic Haak Vineyard & Winery, Santa Fe, Texas.

Whether you are a serious or casual birdwatcher, nature photographer, an experienced or new outdoor enthusiast, or someone who wants some exercise, fresh air and sunshine and something different to do - you’ll want to join the fun events during FeatherFest. There’s no need to be shy – the majority of our guests are not birding or nature photography experts!

There are a ton of field trips and tours listed at the website, including costs, RSVPs, and more info. All field trips and tours are listed with recommended skill levels, as well as what you can expect to see and times.

Raptor Shows are a great way to experience the wildlife on the island up close and personal. These will be held at the Galveston Community Center, 4700 Broadway, on Friday, April 12th, at 3:30pm, and on Saturday-Sunday, April 13th-14th, at 12 noon. Audience members of all ages will be enthralled as raptors demonstrate their hunting styles in exciting free-flight presentations. Redtailed and Harris’s hawks, a Eurasian Eagle, Barn and Great Horned owls, Saker, Barbary and Lanner falcons, a Black Vulture, and a Raven are among the raptors you’ll see.

You can help support GINTC’s youth education efforts by joining the festivities at Raptors Uncorked Rewired, a wildly popular, one-of-akind evening of raptor encounters plus dinner and wine. This ticketed event is Saturday, April 13th, 6-8pm. This will be held at the Historic T. Jefferson League Building, Topgallant Room, located at 2301 The Strand. Cost is $65 per person. Reservations are available at the website. Several raptors will be on hand before dinner for free selfies.

Beautify the Bucket Winners Announced & Exhibited Artist Boat’s purpose is protecting our Gulf Coast through land conservation and with fun, educational, inspiring adventures that spark creativity, awareness, and action.

Since its inception, over 100,000 participants have helped bring 40,000 students to estuaries by kayak, foot, or vessel; created over 50+ public artworks; conserved over 600+ acres on west Galveston Island forming the Coastal Heritage Preserve and creating a place for the future Gulf Coast Environmental Education Center; restored over 50 acres of dunes and prairies to assure recovery of these ecosystems following Hurricane Ike; formed the Bucket Brigade comprised of a Marine Debris Task Force; conducted interpretive tours; and beautified buckets for trash, recycle centers, and more on Galveston beaches.

Beautify the Bucket Spring 2019

With approximately 150 beautified trash barrels already on Galveston beaches, the latest competition adds to Artist Boat's public art efforts to encourage people to throw their trash in the can, not the sand. The Beautify the Bucket Competition is designed to allow citizens to take an active role in beautifying Galveston’s beaches in a way that also encourages better stewardship behaviors in others.

Anyone can participate: individuals or groups, children and adults alike.

All barrels in the Spring 2019 competition will be displayed and judged on Saturday, April 13th from 8am-12 noon at Menard Park in Galveston.

Winners will be announced at 12 noon, and you can come out to view all barrels and vote on your favorite! Registration is open now. Find Beautify the Bucket Registration forms, pick up dates and deadlines at artistboat.org/beautify-the-bucket.

The Grand Reveal for The Edward and Helen Oppenheimer Bird Observatory

Join the fun for a Reveal Party for the new bird observatory. The Grand Reveal Party will include a performance composed by Todd Frazier entitled Music for the Birds, locally sourced hors d’oeuvres, a signature “Roseate Spoonbill” champagne cocktail, keynote speaker Kelly de Schaun and a special guest. Start Collecting Trash for Art Now

In conjunction with World Oceans Day, Artist Boat and the Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees are hosting a Marine Debris Art Contest open to ocean lovers of all ages. Entry forms are now available online at www.artistboat.org

World Oceans Day was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a way to celebrate our world’s shared oceans and personal connection to the sea, to raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives, and the important ways people can protect it. In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 8th as World Oceans Day and it is now commemorated annually worldwide.

The World Oceans Day Festival will take place Saturday, June 8th, at Stewart Beach on Galveston Island. The 2019 festival theme is “The Scourge of Plastic Pollution. Together We Can Make a Difference.” The Marine Debris Art Contest kicks off the countdown to the festival.

The artwork will be displayed and judged at the World Oceans Day Festival at Stewart Beach Pavilion. Prizes will be awarded to first place entries in 3 categories: Ages 5 – 11, ages 12 – 18, and over 18 years of age. Admission fee is $10 for 18 years of age and under and $25 for over 18 years. Art pieces are to be submitted between May 28th and June 7th.

Eco- Art Summer Camps Announced

Artist Boat is a regional leader in eco-art to inspire people to conserve our Gulf Coast. Art meets science in Artist Boat’s Eco-Art Camp sessions. Campers will experience true science and art enrichment with the creation of Eco-Art. Each camper will create high-quality art projects which illustrate all that they have learned throughout the camp.

Susan Venier’s Paintings on Display at Galveston Art League Through April 28th

The pastel painting “Aspen Glory” by Friendswood artist Susan Venier will be exhibited from through April 28th at the Galveston Art League, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston.

Award-winning pastel artist Susan Venier is featured artist for April at the Galveston Art League Gallery. Gallery hours are 12 noon to 6pm Thursdays-Sundays and 12 noon until 9pm for ArtWalk on Saturday, April 27th.

Venier has been honing her artistic abilities since she was a small child who loved coloring books. During her adolescent years, she learned from her grandmother, a varied and talented artist and art instructor. She has since studied under several notable pastel instructors, and Betsy Miler is currently her mentor.

Venier pursued her artistic talents professionally after earning a degree in interior design. Her passion for art and color continues today with the expression of her creativity through pastel painting. Nature is her main subject, and Venier likes to share “all the beauty that surrounds us” in her paintings.

She is a member of the National Society of Artists, Blue River Artist Society of Colorado, and Galveston Art League. The nonprofit Art League is 105 years old and has been operating its gallery, staffed exclusively by volunteers, since 2008. La Izquierda Music Festival To be held at Jimmy’s On The Pier, 9001 Seawall Blvd., the 2019 La Izquierda is an annual surf and music festival dedicated to enriching and uniting communities of Galveston, the Gulf Coast and beyond through a good old fashioned surf competition and fundraiser for the Surfrider Foundation’s Galveston Chapter.

The main event is the Surf Contest, which is a classic longboard showdown at a classic Galveston surf spot, the old 91st Street Pier. There is a $35 entry fee to compete, $10 for Groms (12 & under), and includes t-shirt, commemorative La Izquierda beer glass, and 12 beer tickets. There is an additional $30 fee to enter Open Division. The Surf Competition starts at 10am.

Local and touring bands and artists come from near and far to celebrate surf culture and the preservation of our natural waters and beach habitat with groovy tunes. Featured this year will be Los Skarnales, Robert Kuhn, Dem, Let Me Remember, India Tigers in Texas, Indaskies, Arthur Yoria, Let Me Remember, New Mexico Playboys, and more.

Music will be going on all day.

Local breweries offer their craft brews to the cause and will compete for the most beers sold.

The Craft Beer Tasting will be 12 noon-4pm. There will also be a fun Night Surf event starting at 9pm.

La Izquierda is open to the public and free to attend.

Frank Foster at Tin Cups Cajun Throwdown Join Saturday as they bring down the house with Billboard Country Chart topper Frank Foster.

Foster is a rural Louisiana native and former oilfield man who has taken his songs from the campfire to the coliseum seemingly overnight, all the while gaining a following of fans whose loyalty is unmatched. Frank Foster embodies musical independence at its highest level. He not only has taken the road less traveled, but the road almost never traveled. Acting as his own record label, management, booking agency, and publishing company, he has managed to find success that some major label artists may never find.
