Mexico’s Consulate in Houston has generously arranged for a history professor from Mexico City, Dr. Verónica Zárate Toscano, Ph.D., to join for the preview reception. Dr. Toscano will discuss the period surrounding Emperor Napoleon III of France’s invasion of Mexico. Maximilian’s brief and naïve rule ended after the French withdrew military and financial support in 1867. Although Napoleon III urged him to abandon Mexico and return to Europe, Maximilian refused to desert his loyal followers. “Backyard Wilderness” will surprise and entertain viewers with the unexpected wonders of nature that are right under your noses - in your own backyards. Spanning a seasonal year around a suburban home, the film displays a stunning array of unique wildlife images and behavior - all captured by cameras mounted inside dens and nests, and moving along the forest floor and pond bottom, to reveal its inhabitants in rare and breathtaking intimacy. You will follow Katie, a young girl, and her modern family living next to the woods who are blind to the real-life spectacle around them, absorbed by an array of electronic devices in their busy lives. Katie gradually discovers the intricate secrets that nature has hidden so close to her front door and you will experience the joy that she finds in her interactions with this new world. The film reminds us that Wi-Fi is not the only connection that matters and that sometimes in ordinary places, you can uncover extraordinary things that can transform you forever. Books
2019 Galveston Reads:
“No Apparent Distress: A Doctor’s Coming-of-Age on the Front Lines of American Medicine” by Rachel Pearson
The 2019 Galveston Reads Book choice is “No Apparent Distress: A Doctor’s Coming-of-Age on the Front Lines of American Medicine” by Rachel Pearson, MD. As described by the publisher, this book is a “brutally frank memoir about doctors and patients in a health care system that puts the poor at risk.” Their summary for the book is as follows: “In medical charts, the term “N.A.D.” (No Apparent Distress) is used for patients who appear stable. The phrase also aptly describes America’s medical system when it comes to treating the underprivileged. Medical students learn on the bodies of the poor—and the poor suffer from their mistakes.” Rachel Pearson confronted these harsh realities when she started medical school in Galveston, Texas. Pearson, herself from a working-class background, remains haunted by the suicide of a close friend, experiences firsthand the heartbreak of her own errors in a patient’s care, and witnesses the ruinous effects of a hurricane on a Texas town’s medical system. In a free clinic where the motto is “All Are Welcome Here,” she learns how to practice medicine with love and tenacity amidst the raging injustices of a system that favors the rich and the white. “No Apparent Distress” is at once an indictment of American health care and a deeply moving tale of one doctor’s coming-of-age.

Book Signings in February Saturday, February 16th (2-4pm): “Tuesday Night Love Letters” by Gini Brown and Leslie Watts
Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for local authors Gini Brown and Leslie Watts, with their new collection of stories from Galveston’s past. Galveston Bookshop is located at 317 23rd St. in Downtown Galveston. For more info call (409)750-8200 or go to galvestonbookshop. com. On Tuesday nights from June to August, Galveston’s Summer Beach Band presents free concerts featuring rousing marches and show tunes. Each program includes a short vignette of local “facts, fables, or fabulous fibs,” as interpreted by local authors Gini Brown and Leslie Watts. These entertaining stories are not a history of Galveston in the strict sense, but a more entertaining non-historical history: the little stories of people and events, the tall tales, the gossip, the “didja hears” stories as shared by local folk over back-alley fences, between doughnut shop stools, around cafeteria tables, at church socials, and family reunions. “Tuesday Night Love Letters” is a selection of favorite stories that Gini and Leslie have collected over the years, a few dozen short tales of Galveston history as many think it should be told: warm, witty, and memorable, if not always true. Gini Brown is also the author of “Galveston: Lore, Legends, & Downright Lies,” to which the current book may be considered a sequel. Gini and Leslie are both longtime residents of Galveston, and both are very active in the community.

March 9th (4pm): “Dis Bonne Nuit” Book Signing at From the HeArt Gallery
Come out for this book signing at From the HeArt Gallery, 2111 Postoffice St., Downtown Galveston. “Dis Bonne Nuit” is written by Angela Daniel. The storyline is timely - just a week and a half until Mardi Gras, and a virus breaks out in New Orleans that spreads at lightning speed. The end of the world didn’t come with a bang. It came as a whisper on the breeze. It could have been any day on Bourbon Street. But it wasn’t. It was the day the end began. A sudden mysterious virus sweeps over Orleans Parish and within a matter of hours it seems that everyone has gone crazy. As the city burns, madness and dissension spread quickly. Desperately trying to identify the root of the illness, mistrust and suspicion surround the scientific community over the murder of a colleague. As the event spirals outward, a group of strangers is thrown together determined to survive. Armed with only the talisman and charms of an eccentric woman, they look for their own answers. Will faith, science, and black magic be enough to stop the deadly epidemic in time to save humanity? Say your prayers and say goodnight. Come get your copy and have it signed by the author before the end begins. You can also stick around afterward the book signing and be a part of ArtWalk until 9pm.
Book Signing of “The Sisters” with Winter Texan Janet Kay at The Witchery
Winter Texan Janet Kay will be signing copies of her new paranormal/historical fantasy novel, “The Sisters” from 12 noon-4pm on Saturday, February 2nd at The Witchery, located at 2116 Postoffice St., Downtown Galveston. Set in Galveston, this intriguing novel flashes back and forth in time between the Great Storm of 1900 and the present day. It explores the possibility of penetrating the veil that separates the world of the living from the land of the dead. It does so through the eyes of two feuding sisters who are in love with the same man. It is only after Jimmy’s death that they begin to discover secrets buried within a past life they once shared. Can they find a way to heal, to forgive, and break free from the karma that has haunted them for an eternity? Reviews of “The Sisters” have been excellent: “Janet Kay is a gifted storyteller who enthralls her readers with her brilliant imagination and alluring plots. You won’t be able to put this book down!” Stacie Theis, Book Reviewer, Beach Bound Books. For more information about Janet Kay and her novels, go to novelsbyjanetkay.com.

Contest Entries on Exhibit at Galveston Art League Gallery
Exhibitions This Month at Galveston Arts Center: On Exhibit Through March 3rd:
Camp Bosworth, “Thank You, Please Drive Thru”
Camp Bosworth creates elaborately carved and painted wood objects influenced by his West Texas and the U.S. Mexico border surroundings. Hand-carved, and often gilded or painted, the scale of his work often results in humorous and whimsical sculptures. His most recent works are inspired by the menu items of Dairy Queens ubiquitous to small towns throughout Texas. For his exhibition, “Thank you, Please Drive Thru,” Bosworth brings steak finger baskets and soft-served ice cream sculptures to Galveston. In the 1878 & Brown Foundation Galleries, Miss Pussycat presents “The Puppet Worlds of Miss Pussycat.” “The Puppet Worlds of Miss Pussycat” features an installation of puppets and their worlds by New Orleans based artist, musician, and puppeteer, Panacea Theriac (also known as Miss Pussycat). The exhibition includes puppets and puppet theaters, along with videos, photographs, and ceramic sculptures of her puppets. “The Puppet Worlds of Miss Pussycat” highlights characters and worlds from her last five puppet shows: “The Western Village Shopping Village,” “Clothes Made by Small Furry Animals, Frenchy and Jett,” “The Happy Castle of Goblinburg,” and “The Cookie Carnival Baking Contest.” In her work, Miss Pussycat creates paracosmic fantasies that often relate to her own experience as an artist and musician. She’s in a band and her puppets have a band that releases records, while others are artists and museum workers in a fictitious museum. Each character assumes a life of their own in an everevolving series of stories. On the second floor, Quintron’s “Drum Buddy (Miss Pussycat Model)” will be on exhibit. Playing on the unique acoustics of the concrete and steel lined second-floor vault of GAC’s 1878 First National Bank Building, New Orleans-based artist and musician Quintron presents one of his most notable inventions, the Drum Buddy. The Drum Buddy is a light-activated analog synthesizer which creates murky, low-fidelity, rhythmic patterns triggered by the rotation of recycled #10 pizza sauce cans. Using the unique characteristics of optical sensors, the instrument produces drum-like tones, chirps, and buzzes in four distinct voices: kick, snare, bass, and “space.” Quintron is credited with fostering an analog synth revival in the late 1990’s-early 2000’s with the invention of and continual experimentation with the Drum Buddy. The piece on display at GAC is a one-of-a-kind version of the instrument created for Miss Pussycat in 2009. Visitors are invited to enter the vault to

Music Gabe Wooten’s Songwriters Series with East Texas Legend Heather Little:
Living A Real Life One Day at a Time By Johnny Griffith
Life is simultaneously many things at once; messy, beautiful, challenging, spontaneous, surprising. The sum of these, and more, shape who we are as people. Yet if you listen to mainstream radio you might think life was one big party with trucks and tractors, boys and girls, dollar bills and getting paid; that is unless you’ve heard a song Heather Little wrote. Originally from Princeton, Texas the Lindale mother/singer/songwriter has been writing songs since she was a little girl when her mother would sing classic rock songs to her and she’d sneak listens to her dad’s album collection that included some of the legends of country music: Dolly Parton, Hank Jr., as well as others. Eventually some of those songs found their way into the hands of people like local East Texans Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves where they would end up on the radio, and immediately you knew that these were not your run of the mill party songs that took up so much real estate on the corporate radio landscape. Heather writes songs that reflect what she considers to be real life, which covers the entire gamut of human emotion: joy, frustration, fulfillment, disappointment, and everything in between. With deceptively complex songs and hauntingly beautiful vocals, Heather sings about life from a place of genuine experience and authenticity that pulls you in tight and is reluctant to let you go until the story is told. We were able to catch up to Heather on a recent trip to Nashville, in between gigs, to ask her a few questions: Johnny: What originally got you into music?
Heather: I’ve been into music as far back as I can remember. It started with my mother always having music on, and then my older brother Jayson taught me to sing harmonies. We always sang together growing up. As for songwriting, I’ve just always made up songs for as long as I can remember. I started performing at about 13 with Jayson at weddings and such. Then on my own here and there. Johnny: How did that translate into a career in songwriting? Heather: My professional songwriting began when my mom convinced me to enter a songwriting contest. (I did not win.) That’s where I met Miranda and Rick Lambert as they were judges of the contest. She was 17 at the time. We’ve written together on and off ever since. Miranda and her family are directly responsible for my start as a professional songwriter. Johnny: When and where was your first public performance? Heather: My first public performance was the Wylie Opry when I was about 13. Johnny: What has been one of your most memorable performances so far? Heather: My most memorable performance was with Craig Wallace and Matt Bradshaw at the fundraiser for Andy Kay Joiner of Blacktop Gypsy. Johnny: Who have been some of your biggest musical influences? Heather: I have too many musical influences to name. I will say two of the earliest ones, and I continue to love them to this day, are Rickie Lee Jones and Prince. Prince was a very big deal to me, and I still can’t believe he’s really gone. Johnny: Your music has a uniquely beautiful melancholy and stripped-bare quality that weaves its way through the lyrics and chords. How would you describe it, and where does that come from? Heather: I have no idea how to truly describe my music. It just is whatever it is, and is subject to interpretation by all ears. Johnny: How many originals do you think you have at this point, and what are some of your favorite cover songs to do during a show? Heather:I don’t know how many originals I have now; hundreds. My favorite cover depends on where I’m playing and for whom. I love "Me and Bobby McGee," "Turn the Page," and "Guilty." Johnny: Which of your songs would say is the
best glimpse of who you are? Heather: I will never tell. Johnny: How strong is the singer/songwriter community in this area? Heather: There is a strong sense of community among singer-songwriters out in East Texas. There are those who feel out of the loop sometimes, and I’ve been one of them before and probably will be again. It’s a cycle creative people go through. We go out and do what we do, get a little spent or burned out, then we hide and recharge. I think we all run that cycle to some degree. Johnny: What are some of your goals for this year? Heather: Hopefully I can finish a couple of EP’s, write a ton of new music, and continue playing more shows. Johnny: What experience do you hope a firsttime listener takes away from one of your shows? Heather: I hope they find some kind of comfort, perhaps in knowing they’re not alone, hearing out loud that each one of us is just as human as the other. Johnny: What was the last thing you listened to before this interview? Heather: The last thing I listened to was Miranda Lambert’s “The Weight of These Wings.” For more info on Heather Little, you can find her on Facebook, go to reverbnation.com/heatherlittlemusic, or heatherlittlemusic.com. Hamilton Loomis Returns
Hamilton Loomis will be at Sharky’s Tavern, located at 504 25th St., Downtown Galveston, February 22nd, 9pm-1am. Loomis will perform his “Live from Texas” tour to kick off your Mardi Gras. Born and raised in Galveston, Texas, Loomis is the son of musician parents who listened to blues, rock and soul. Music ran in his veins and, with instruments readily available around the house, he picked up drums, piano, guitar, and harmonica, honing his multi-instrumental talent in addition to performing regularly as part of his family’s doo-wop group. Loomis and crew shine on stage proving his music is best experienced in person, where one can see and hear its intended splendor. Described by “Blues Blast Magazine” as “a non-stop turbo of power, one minute moving from side to side of the stage, and then taking on his horn player in a head-cutting contest on the apron of the stage the next minute.” Loomis’ energetic, get-in-with– the-crowd antics are infectious. Other Events
February 3rd (7-10pm): Jersey Boys at The Grand - They were just four guys from Jersey, until they sang their very first notes. They had a sound nobody had ever heard. But while their harmonies were perfect on stage, off stage it was a very different story − a story that has made them an international sensation all over again. Go behind the music and inside the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons in the Tony Award®-winning true-life musical phenomenon, Jersey Boys. Hits include “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like A Man,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You.” Jersey Boys contains authentic, “profane Jersey language,” and is recommended for mature audiences. The Grand 1894 Opera House is located at 2020 Postoffice St. in Galveston’s historic Downtown Cultural Arts District. Tickets are available by contacting The Grand’s box office at (409)765-1894, (800)821-1894, or go to thegrand.com. It moves my body. I learned long ago that whenever music is coming from you, from deep inside your soul and from the right place, people will feel that on a deeper level and might not even know what’s going on inside of themselves. I enjoy engaging the crowd and feel a show should be an interactive experience.” Get your advance tickets by calling (409)443-5584 or go by the bar to pick up your tickets. This will be a fantastic evening of music and fun! Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.
