Sylvia Milo’s award-winning drama is the true, untold story of Nannerl Mozart, the sister of Amadeus. A prodigy, keyboard virtuoso, and composer who performed throughout Europe with her brother to equal acclaim, Nannerl’s work and her story faded away, lost to history. Described by “The New York Times” as “strikingly beautiful,” this one-woman drama is based on stories and comments pulled directly from the Mozart family’s humorous and heartbreaking letters. “The Other Mozart” is a multi-sensual experience that transports the audience into a world of outsized beauty and delight – but also of overwhelming restrictions and prejudice where, finally, this other Mozart tells her story. Tickets are $30-$75. Sponsored in part by The Trube Foundation And William J. And Merri S. Edwards Charitable Gift Fund.

Through April 11th: Maxfield Parrish: The Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Murals - This exhibition at The Bryan Museum in Galveston combines wealth, beauty, and high-stakes art theft. In 1912, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, heiress, scion, and founder of Manhattan’s Whitney Museum, commissioned American artist Maxfield Parrish to create a set of murals for her Long Island mansion’s art studio. Nearly ninety years later, two of the nine murals were stolen in a daring and sophisticated robbery. Thieves entered a West Hollywood art gallery through the roof, disabled motion sensors, and alarms, and cut two of the paintings from their frames. The two murals are still missing and the heist is on the FBI’s list of Top Ten International Art Crimes. The Bryan Museum’s exhibition is your only opportunity to see all nine murals together, at least in spirit - prints of the two missing murals will be on display. These murals are arguably the finest works Parrish ever created. Originally installed in the reception room of Whitney’s art studio, the large-scale paintings were created from 1914 to 1918. Parrish’s paintings convey a sense of magic through their imagined and idealized neo-classical imagery. Parrish’s popularity was staggering, with one in four American homes displaying his art during the first half of the 20th century. ship’s sails on the pier at Texas Seaport Museum, Pier 22 and Harborside Dr. The movie will begin at sunset. The public is encouraged to bring their own chairs, beverages (BYOB), snacks and blankets. Popcorn will be available for purchase dockside. Admission is free. April 6th: 2019 Daysails & Plankowners’ Sailabration - 2019 sees the Official Tall Ship of Texas return to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico for her annual daysail series. As one of the oldest, and longest continuously sailed vessels in the world, the annual daysails keep her where she works best, with her sails down, sailing in the Gulf waters. This annual fundraising event will feature hors-d’oeuvres, open bar, premium dining, incredible auction items and more. 100% of the proceeds benefit ELISSA and the many educational and training programs of the Texas Seaport Museum. The Plankowners’ Sailabration offers the public the opportunity to purchase a plank. Each plank donation will be honored with the purchaser’s name recorded and displayed on ELISSA’s Plankowners’ II Honor Board for posterity. 2019 Galveston Reads:

“No Apparent Distress: A Doctor’s Coming-ofAge on the Front Lines of American Medicine” by Rachel Pearson The 2019 Galveston Reads Book choice is “No Apparent Distress: A Doctor’s Coming-of-Age on the Front Lines of American Medicine” by Rachel Pearson, MD. As described by the publisher, this title is a “brutally frank memoir about doctors and patients in a health care system that puts the poor at risk.” Their summary is as follows: In medical charts, the term “N.A.D.” (No Apparent Distress) is used for patients who appear stable. The phrase also aptly describes America’s medical system when it comes to treating the underprivileged. Medical students learn on the bodies of the poor—and the poor suffer from their mistakes. Rachel Pearson confronted these harsh realities when she started medical school in Galveston, Texas. Pearson, herself from a working-class background, remains haunted by the suicide of a close friend, experiences firsthand the heartbreak of her own errors in a patient’s care, and witnesses the ruinous effects of a hurricane on a Texas town’s medical system. In a free clinic where the motto is “All Are Welcome Here,” she learns how to practice medicine with love and tenacity amidst the raging injustices of a system that favors the rich and the white. “No Apparent Distress” is at once an indictment of American health care and a deeply moving tale of one doctor’s coming-of-age.

Art Exhibitions This Month at Galveston Arts Center:

Kaneem Smith Continues “Captive Sojourn & the Indefinite” with Renata Lucia & Lina Dib Through January 13th

In the main gallery, Kaneem Smith will feature “Captive Sojourn and the Indefinite” on exhibit. Kaneem Smith’s exhibition explores the tumultuous relationship between trade, consumption, and commodities. Referencing Galveston’s location on a natural port in the Gulf of Mexico, and its historical and contemporary ties to the exchange of goods and labor, her installation contemplates the trade of natural materials, specifically cotton and coffee through textiles, such as burlap used for import/export purposes. As a mixed media artist and sculptor with a background in fibers, these concepts run a complex thread throughout her body of work. In the 1878 Gallery, Renata Lucia will feature “News vs. Nature (Gulf).” Renata Lucia’s paintings reflect on the widening social divides that unfold in the current news cycle. Her works incorporate national and local newspapers, including works created specifically for this exhibition that use pages from “The Galveston Daily News.” Acrylic paint and drawing media are applied to crumpled newspaper pages that are selected for composition and content, resulting in a textured topographical illusion. The intimacy of reading a physical newspaper is contrasted with a detached aerial view. Lucia began the “News vs. Nature” series considering the organized chaos of nature reigning supreme against the psychological toll of bad news. The series shifted and took on new importance in late 2017 as an epic battle began to rage in our perception and discussion of the news. Lucia’s works consider the questions: “Is the news fake or, more likely, a last bastion of truth? Is nature sublime, or does it represent the most disturbing aspects of human nature?” In the Brown Foundation Gallery, Lina Dib will show “Threshold,” an interactive video installation that incorporates video of waves breaking on the Galveston shore just before sunset. The shore’s infinite poetic qualities, constant ebb and flow, and collision of bodies (land and sea) feature largely in Dib’s work. “Threshold” is a kind of homage to Thierry Kuntzel’s “The Waves” and to Andy Warhol’s “Sunset.” It is a tribute and meditation on the specificities of place and our relationship to natural systems.

January 19th-March 3rd

Opening of Camp Bosworth, “Thank you, Please Drive Thru”

Camp Bosworth creates elaborately carved and painted wood objects influenced by his West Texas and the U.S. Mexico border surroundings. Hand-carved, and often gilded or painted, the scale of his work often results in humorous and whimsical sculptures. His most recent works are inspired by the menu items of Dairy Queens ubiquitous to small towns throughout Texas. For his exhibition, “Thank you, Please Drive Thru,” Bosworth brings steak finger baskets and soft-served ice cream sculptures to Galveston. There will be an opening reception on January 19th at 6pm with an Artist Talk at 6:30pm. In the 1878 & Brown Foundation Galleries, Miss Pussycat presents “The Puppet Worlds of Miss Pussycat.” “The Puppet Worlds of Miss Pussycat” features an installation of puppets and their worlds by New-Orleans based artist, musician, and puppeteer, Panacea Theriac (also known as Miss Pussycat). The exhibition includes puppets and puppet theaters, along with videos, photographs, and ceramic sculptures of her puppets. “The Puppet Worlds of Miss Pussycat” highlights characters and worlds from her last five puppet shows: “The Western Village Shopping Village,” “Clothes Made by Small Furry Animals, Frenchy and Jett,” “The Happy Castle of Goblinburg,” and “The Cookie Carnival Baking Contest.” In her work, Miss Pussycat creates paracosmic fantasies that often relate to her own experience as an artist and musician. She’s in a band and her puppets have a band that releases records, while others are artists and museum workers in a fictitious museum. Each character assumes a life of their own in an ever-evolving series of stories. On the second floor, Quintron “Drum Buddy (Miss Pussycat Model)” will be on exhibit. Playing on the unique acoustics of the concrete and steel lined second-floor vault of GAC’s 1878 First National Bank Building, New Orleans-based artist and musician Quintron, presents one of his most notable inventions, the Drum Buddy. The Drum Buddy is a light-activated, analog synthesizer which creates murky, low-fidelity, rhythmic patterns triggered by the rotation of recycled #10 pizza sauce cans. Using the unique characteristics of optical sensors, the instrument produces 16 • GalvestonIslandGuide.com

drum-like tones, chirps, and buzzes in four distinct voices: kick, snare, bass, and “space.” Quintron is credited with fostering an analog synth revival in the late 1990’s-early 2000’s with the invention and continual experimentation with the Drum Buddy. The piece on display at GAC is a one-of-a-kind version of the instrument created for Miss Pussycat in 2009. Visitors are invited to enter the vault to experience the unique soundscape produced by this innovative instrument.

Galveston Art League Displays Lee Johnson’s Brilliant Paintings

Dickinson artist Lee Johnson, the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist for January, paints every day, and she advises all artists to do the same. Her paintings, which have a luminous effect and graceful style, will be exhibited and available for purchase from January 3rd-27th at the Art League’s Downtown Galveston Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. Johnson works in watercolor, acrylic, and oil. She teaches oil painting, beginning watercolor, and advanced watercolor at the College of the Mainland’s Lifelong Learning Center in La Marque. Her favorite subjects to paint include plants, landscapes, portraits, wildlife, and abstracts. “Design is the most important thing,” says Johnson, a professional member of the nonprofit Galveston Art League. “I messed around for 10 years before I learned design, and then it was like a light switch turned on. By design, I mean the objects to include in the painting and where to put them - the darks, lights, and mid-tones to use; the big and little pieces you need. And you need a big object that stands out.” Johnson, who began painting about three decades ago, sells her paintings at both Galveston Art League galleries and through exhibits such as those held at the Dickinson Library in May and Seabrook Library in June. Her awards include a “Spring 2018 Best of Show” for “Tropicals” and “Winter 2017 Best of Show” for “Sunflower” in Art League competitions.

Music February 1st at 8pm:

Aaron Lewis at The 1894 Grand Theater

18 • GalvestonIslandGuide.com

If you want to get to know Aaron Lewis, just listen to “The Road.” On his first fulllength album, the Grammy Award-nominated, multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and guitarist tells one story after another. Echoing traditional country, some of those tales are hilarious and heartwarming, while others are pensive and personal. Nevertheless, they’re all equally powerful, vibrant, and unforgettable. For Lewis, “The Road” continues to wind and surprise like it always has. In 2011, the Staind frontman formally arrived in the country world with the release of his debut EP, “Town Line.” Highlighted by the success of gold-selling single “Country Boy” featuring the legendary George Jones and Charlie Daniels, the seven-song EP reached #1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart and #7 on the Billboard Top 200 upon release. Lewis also received two Academy of Country Music nominations for “Vocal Event of the Year” for “Country Boy” (for his work as artist and as co-producer) as well as two CMT nominations - one for “USA Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year” and another for “Collaborative Video of the Year.” Simultaneously, the music video for the single stirred similar fan fervor, surpassing 12 million views on YouTube and 3 million on CMT.com. After a whirlwind year, Lewis began working on what would become “The Road” in the fall of 2011. While balancing both a solo run and a tour supporting Staind’s self-titled seventh studio album, he carved out intermittent pockets of time to record in Nashville with legendary Grammy-winning producer James Stroud. “I didn’t stop to think about it very much,” Lewis smiles. “James lets me run with it. We respect each other and he allows me to really be who I am. I recorded this whole record by bouncing in and out of Nashville on days off. I’d come into town, work for the day, bail out, and play some more shows. Four days later, I’d do the same thing. That’s how the album was made, and it’s why I called it ‘The Road’.” It’s a natural progression from “Town Line.” The album’s ten songs unfold with a classic grit and invigorating energy all directly from Lewis’s heart and soul. The first single, “Endless Summer,” recalls an idyllic day in the sun with his daughters. A bluesy guitar twang bends into a shimmering refrain about “another day in paradise” that’s both infectious and inimitable. Lewis laughs, “It proves I can write a happy tune. It’s a story about me and the family going to our beach cottage on the weekends. It’s all true. We drive down there, cook striper on the grill, and dig our own clams.” Then there’s “Forever,” a true product of “The Road” itself. It captures the longing and loneliness of life on the tour bus, while reflecting the immortality of true love. It’s touching and thought-provoking all at once. “Doubt can set in on the road,” he reveals. “Conversations from home aren’t always warm and fuzzy. However, things change when you get back. The song goes from questioning to being reassured that everything is all good.” On the other end of the spectrum, his sense of humor shines through on the propulsive highway anthem “State Lines” and swaggering old school good-time of “Party in Hell.” Lewis goes on, “Adding humor opens the avenues of exploration a little bit more, and it appeals to more of the senses. Plus, it’s just fun to imagine what a party in hell might be like with Rick James.” Lewis personally penned all of the songs on “The Road” but one. For “Grandaddy’s Gun,” he teamed up with Rhett Akins, Dallas Davidson, and Bobby Pinson, marking the first songwriting collaboration of his career. Annually, Lewis hosts a benefit show for his charity, “It Takes a Community,” which benefits his daughter’s elementary school through community donations. Akins performed “Grandaddy’s Gun” at the 2011 show. As soon as Lewis heard the tune, it stayed stuck in his head. “I was completely blown away by the song,” he elaborates. “When the opportunity came up, I decided to record it for ‘The Road.’ They’re three

of Nashville’s best and I have so much respect for them. It all fit with my life too. I have grandaddy’s gun, and he did buy it out of a Sears and Roebuck catalog.” Once again, he collaborated with some heavy hitters in the studio. His musical partner-in-crime Ben Kitterman expanded the overall sound with acoustic guitar, dobro, piano, and other instruments. Meanwhile, iconic pedal steel player Paul Franklin makes a return as well as guitarist Brett Mason and Eddie Bayers on drums. Joining the fold in Nashville were Craig Frost [Bob Seger] on keyboards and Keith Horne [Waylon Jennings] on bass. In many ways, “The Road” brings things full circle for Lewis. In Staind, he has made an indelible mark on hard rock. The group has sold 13 million albums worldwide, yielding four consecutive top 3 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 as well as numerous radio hits. Their single “It’s Been Awhile” also remains the most-played rock song of the decade. Still, this new chapter proves cyclical for Lewis, actually bringing him back to the first style of music he’d heard: country music. Now, he’s carrying on a tradition of storytelling and songwriting himself. “I’m really hoping the songs speak for themselves,” he concludes. “I hope people hear the record and realize that this is all me. There’s nothing more to say. I’m just writing songs like I have been for my whole career.” That’s all he really has to do. For Aaron Lewis, “The Road” looks brighter than ever. Ticket cost is $29-$65. The Grand 1894 Opera House is located at 2020 Postoffice St. in Galveston’s historic Downtown Cultural Arts District. Tickets are available by contacting The Grand’s box office at (409)765-1894, (800)821-1894, or thegrand.com.
